  1. Asylum seeker Kadim Dai fled to Indonesia to escape the Taliban in fear of his life.

  2. Kadim, who is part of the persecuted Hazara ethnic minority in Afghanistan,

  3. fled to Pakistan with his family when he was a child.

  4. He left Pakistan in 2013 when a bomb went off near his school

  5. that killed 124 people, including a dear friend of his.

  6. Kadim, who has been found to be a genuine refugee by the United Nations Refugee Agency,

  7. is living in Indonesia until he is resettled into another country.

  8. He featured in the recent multimedia series Frontiers of Hope,

  9. and he agreed to participate in a question and answer session

  10. about the life of a refugee on the Age newspaper's Facebook page last Monday night.

  11. What happened next highlights the state of the asylum seeker debate and racism in this country.

  12. Here is what some of our fellow citizens wrote on the Age newspaper's Facebook page.

  13. Another privileged elitist trying to illegally enter Australia.

  14. Only Australians have right to say who can live here.

  15. No other should have influence.

  16. And out of those, only those who pay taxes should have a vote.

  17. Why is this Australia's problem?

  18. We are not a super country that can save six billion lives.

  19. What's wrong with Indonesia?

  20. They are mainly Muslim and should be welcoming their fellow Muslims.

  21. He should not be a burden to our society.

  22. Why should I have to work hard to pay for my mortgage and food and my foxtel?

  23. And this toad comes in through the back door and my taxes feed him.

  24. That makes me hate asylum seekers even more.

  25. He should be shot dead.

  26. And yes, I would gladly donate money for the bullet.

  27. Now, I hope your blood boiled.

  28. I left out the expletive laden ones for the sake of propriety here this morning.

  29. And ones that were even worse than that, which is hard to imagine.

  30. I found it hard to believe that someone would put that stuff out there on the public forum.

  31. A disgraceful treatment of another human being, and yet it's out there in our society.

  32. And it's hard to believe that that's the sort of attitude that has historically found a home in the Christian church.

  33. Even within our lifetime.

  34. And one of the clearest examples is the history of the black-white relationship in churches in the United States.

  35. In parts of the United States, where Christian values were the strongest and church attendance in the highest,

  36. millions of whites belonged to the white supremacy group, the Ku Klux Klan.

  37. And even as far back as the 1950s, that's not that long ago,

  38. church groups would be involved in public lynchings of Negroes.

  39. There's photos on the internet.

  40. Church families just walked out of church, all dressed up for church,

  41. and they're with people hanging from trees.

  42. That's not that long ago.

  43. The Ku Klux Klan has been involved in the segregation and slavery and torture and murder of many black people.

  44. And yet, the Ku Klux Klan was, and in fact still is, a powerful advocate of Christianity.

  45. The Christian cross features heavily in its activities,

  46. and it has consistently campaigned for the compulsory teaching of Christianity in public schools.

  47. It still does.

  48. There are some very dark chapters in the history of the church,

  49. and yet, I have hope.

  50. I believe that the local church that treasures Jesus together

  51. can be a pace setter for the wider community on this issue.

  52. And so this series is not about St. Paul's being perfect on the issue.

  53. It's about movement in the right direction.

  54. That's what it's about.

  55. The theology of the Apostle Paul, I believe, helps us move in the right direction

  56. of ending racial pride and ethnocentricity.

  57. Hopefully, in the last three weeks, you've already been challenged

  58. about some attitudes of your own heart.

  59. If not, I would encourage you to keep tuning in.

  60. So let's go to Galatians 2.

  61. It was just read out to us by Debbie.

  62. Galatians 2, verses 11 to 16 particularly I want to focus on.

    Galatians 2:11–16

  63. The key phrase that I want to focus on is verse 14.

  64. When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel.

  65. That's the verse.

  66. That verse implies that there is conduct,

  67. that is, there's behavior, actions, things that we do

  68. that is out of step with the truth of the gospel,

  69. which is what we focused on last week.

  70. Or to put it another way,

  71. the gospel governs not just what we believe,

  72. but what we do.

  73. So there is gospel belief,

  74. and there is gospel actions.

  75. And some beliefs contradict the gospel,

  76. and some actions contradict the gospel.

  77. And Peter's action here in Galatians 2

  78. was contradicting the gospel.

  79. And so this is one of the most important questions

  80. that we can ask.

  81. Ask of our habits,

  82. of our actions,

  83. of our behaviors,

  84. of our attitudes.

  85. Do they contradict the gospel?

  86. Or positively,

  87. are my actions, behaviors, attitudes

  88. in step with what I say

  89. that I believe about Jesus?

  90. Do they say true things about the gospel?

  91. Does it reflect the gospel?

  92. Does it look like the kind of action

  93. that would flow out of the gospel?

  94. Now, Paul here leaves us in no doubt

  95. about what the heart of the gospel is.

  96. So we're going to look at it again

  97. so that we're clear on it.

  98. We don't have to go any further than verse 16,

  99. I think.

  100. So look at that with me.

  101. Galatians 2 verse 16.

    Galatians 2:16

  102. We who are Jews by birth

  103. and not Gentile sinners

  104. know that a man is not justified

  105. by observing the law

  106. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  107. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus

  108. that we may be justified by faith in Christ

  109. and not by observing the law

  110. because by observing the law

  111. no one will be justified.

  112. And so the heart of the gospel

  113. for the apostle Paul

  114. was justification by faith alone

  115. apart from works of the law.

  116. Justification is what a judge does

  117. in a courtroom.

  118. It is a declaration that a defendant

  119. is found innocent

  120. because they are actually innocent.

  121. The defendant is declared to be just

  122. that is right, justified,

  123. just if I had never sinned

  124. because they are just.

  125. It's as just as if they had never sinned.

  126. So how can God, the judge,

  127. declare us righteous and innocent?

  128. And the answer is what we looked at last week

  129. is that Jesus Christ lived and died

  130. and to provide our righteousness

  131. and to bear our punishment.

  132. Justification by faith

  133. puts all of us,

  134. every single person,

  135. on level ground

  136. in utter dependence upon him.

  137. Utter dependence upon his grace.

  138. And one thing that justification does

  139. is it smashes pride.

  140. That's the heart of the gospel.

  141. And my friends,

  142. from that gospel,

  143. how many new and sweet

  144. and tender and deep

  145. and strong and beautiful

  146. and noble and humble and kind

  147. and wise and patient

  148. and caring and serving attitudes

  149. and behaviors

  150. flow from that gospel.

  151. And one of which

  152. is the breaking down

  153. of ethnic hostilities

  154. and suspicion

  155. and creates instead

  156. unity and harmony

  157. where there was once division.

  158. justification by faith

  159. and justification by faith

  160. and justification by faith alone

  161. has overcome all,

  162. all,

  163. all,

  164. all

  165. the divisions

  166. that there are

  167. between people.

  168. Galatians 3 verses 26 to 28

    Galatians 3:26–28

  169. is very clear on that.

  170. You are all sons of God

  171. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  172. For all of you

  173. who were baptized

  174. into Christ

  175. have clothed yourselves

  176. with Christ.

  177. There is neither Jew

  178. nor Greek,

  179. slave nor free,

  180. male nor female,

  181. for you are all one

  182. in Christ Jesus.

  183. If you belong to Christ,

  184. then you are Abraham's seed

  185. and heirs

  186. according to the promise.

  187. Remember,

  188. Galatians,

  189. oh sorry,

  190. Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  191. turning point that I said,

  192. Abraham.

  193. That's where it all started,

  194. God's redemption plan.

  195. When Paul states here

  196. there is neither Jew

  197. nor Greek,

  198. slave nor free,

  199. male nor female,

  200. he strikes

  201. at the three,

  202. at least the three

  203. of the major barrier

  204. forming divisions

  205. in human society.

  206. Ethnic,

  207. economic capacity

  208. and sexuality.

  209. There was a Jewish prayer

  210. in the first century

  211. that went like this.

  212. Blessed be he

  213. that he did not make me

  214. a Gentile.

  215. Blessed be he

  216. that he did not make me

  217. a slave

  218. or an ignorant peasant.

  219. And blessed be he

  220. that he did not make me

  221. a woman.

  222. That's a Jewish prayer.

  223. I assume prayed

  224. just at men's breakfasts,

  225. the bacon-free

  226. men's breakfasts

  227. that they had

  228. back in those days.

  229. And the Christian gospel

  230. smashes all of those barriers.

  231. And it forms,

  232. doesn't just break down

  233. the barriers,

  234. it forms a radically

  235. new society.

  236. It doesn't obliterate

  237. the differences.

  238. Greeks are still Greeks,

  239. slaves are still slaves,

  240. and women are still women.

  241. What obliterates here

  242. is the barriers

  243. that are formed up

  244. in those differences.

  245. And what's also obliterated

  246. is a person's status

  247. among the people of God

  248. based on those differences.

  249. There is no race,

  250. no nation,

  251. no class,

  252. no gender,

  253. no denomination

  254. that has a favoured status

  255. with God.

  256. This was radical theology

  257. in Paul's day

  258. because it flew

  259. in the face

  260. of all traditional norms.

  261. And it continues

  262. to be radical theology

  263. today

  264. because it conflicts

  265. with many of our

  266. cultural norms as well.

  267. The gospel brings

  268. unity,

  269. not uniformity.

  270. But at the end

  271. of Galatians 2 verse 12,

    Galatians 2:12

  272. we see that Peter

  273. was governed by fear

  274. and not by the gospel.

  275. And Paul rebuked him

  276. for it

  277. in Galatians 2

    Galatians 2:11–13

  278. verses 11

  279. to 13.

  280. When Peter

  281. came to Antioch,

  282. I opposed him to his face

  283. because he was clearly

  284. in the wrong.

  285. Before certain men

  286. came from James,

  287. he used to eat

  288. with the Gentiles.

  289. But when they arrived,

  290. he began to draw back

  291. and separate himself

  292. from the Gentiles

  293. because he was afraid

  294. of those

  295. who belonged

  296. to the circumcision group.

  297. The other Jews

  298. joined him

  299. in his hypocrisy

  300. so that by their hypocrisy,

  301. even Barnabas

  302. was led astray.

  303. And so Peter

  304. had been

  305. experiencing

  306. the freedom

  307. of the gospel

  308. as a Jew

  309. and he'd been

  310. crossing

  311. ethnic

  312. and religious barriers

  313. to eat with Gentiles

  314. ever since

  315. Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  316. If you want to go back,

  317. that's a turning point

  318. for him.

  319. And then

  320. it says

  321. in verse 12

  322. that certain men

  323. came from James.

  324. Now these were

  325. the Jerusalem

  326. conservatives

  327. who believed

  328. that the Gentiles

  329. because of their

  330. uncircumcision

  331. and because of their

  332. unkosher

  333. dietary habits

  334. and because of their

  335. failure to keep

  336. the holy days,

  337. they were

  338. off limits

  339. even if

  340. they were

  341. Christian,

  342. they were still

  343. off limits

  344. for Jews.

  345. And so these

  346. conservatives,

  347. theological

  348. conservatives

  349. came down

  350. from Jerusalem,

  351. the

  352. Sydney Anglicans,

  353. they

  354. came

  355. to

  356. Hillsong

  357. and started

  358. throwing stones.

  359. religious

  360. and ethnic

  361. issues

  362. were

  363. inseparable

  364. for them.

  365. Now I'm not

  366. sure exactly

  367. what Peter

  368. was afraid

  369. of,

  370. but it's

  371. clear,

  372. excuse me,

  373. it's clear

  374. that he was

  375. afraid of his

  376. own group.

  377. and what

  378. is absolutely

  379. clear is

  380. that that

  381. fear ruined

  382. practical

  383. gospel

  384. faithfulness

  385. and

  386. relationships.

  387. He was

  388. free,

  389. he was

  390. eating with

  391. brothers across

  392. ethnic lines

  393. and fear,

  394. at least for

  395. that moment,

  396. destroyed the

  397. diversity and

  398. the harmony.

  399. And so at

  400. very least I

  401. think I could

  402. say from this

  403. passage,

  404. don't let

  405. fear ruin

  406. your joyful

  407. freedom in

  408. living and

  409. working and

  410. worshipping and

  411. relaxing and

  412. eating with

  413. brothers and

  414. sisters who

  415. are different

  416. from you.

  417. Or to put it

  418. positively,

  419. fall in love

  420. with Jesus

  421. again.

  422. That's what it

  423. means.

  424. Fall in love

  425. with Jesus

  426. again.

  427. Rejoice all

  428. over again

  429. that you are

  430. justified by

  431. faith alone.

  432. It means we

  433. need to keep

  434. Jesus front and

  435. centre.

  436. We need to

  437. keep justification

  438. by faith

  439. front and

  440. centre.

  441. Consistently,

  442. level playing

  443. field, no

  444. room for

  445. pride.

  446. It means

  447. treasuring

  448. Jesus together.

  449. Again,

  450. keep putting

  451. to that,

  452. treasuring

  453. Jesus

  454. together.

  455. And yet

  456. fear is a

  457. very real

  458. issue.

  459. I went to

  460. the Hillsong

  461. conference this

  462. year.

  463. First time

  464. ever.

  465. I ran into

  466. a friend of

  467. mine, a

  468. colleague from

  469. all colleagues

  470. there.

  471. We were both

  472. surprised to see

  473. each other.

  474. fear.

  475. I said to

  476. him, let's

  477. take a photo

  478. and stick it

  479. on Facebook.

  480. Preferably with

  481. Brian if we

  482. can.

  483. And he said,

  484. I'm glad to be

  485. here.

  486. I'm not quite

  487. ready for the

  488. vitriol.

  489. Fear.

  490. I agreed with

  491. him.

  492. Fear.

  493. Fear.

  494. Fear.

  495. Fear.

  496. Fear.

  497. Fear.

  498. Fear.

  499. Fear.

  500. Fear.

  501. Fear.

  502. Fear.

  503. Fear.

  504. Fear.

  505. Fear.

  506. We need to

  507. keep putting

  508. Jesus front

  509. and center.

  510. We need

  511. Jesus to be

  512. our greatest

  513. treasure.

  514. We need to

  515. remember that

  516. the divide

  517. could not

  518. have been

  519. larger between

  520. sinful human

  521. beings and

  522. the infinitely

  523. holy son of

  524. God.

  525. And Jesus

  526. did not

  527. despise us.

  528. He came to

  529. us.

  530. He loved

  531. us.

  532. He died in

  533. our place to

  534. give us

  535. life.

  536. And he

  537. did that

  538. when we

  539. were more

  540. alien to

  541. him than

  542. anyone has

  543. ever been

  544. to us.

  545. Jesus

  546. needs to

  547. be front

  548. and center

  549. consistently.

  550. You see

  551. when we

  552. think or

  553. feel or

  554. act with

  555. disdain or

  556. disrespect or

  557. avoidance or

  558. exclusion or

  559. malice towards

  560. a person

  561. simply because

  562. he or she

  563. is of

  564. another race

  565. or another

  566. ethnic group

  567. we are

  568. in effect

  569. saying that

  570. Jesus

  571. acted

  572. foolishly

  573. towards

  574. us.

  575. And I

  576. don't believe

  577. we ever

  578. want to

  579. say that.

  580. Now

  581. as far as I'm

  582. aware here at

  583. St. Paul's we

  584. don't face the

  585. issues of

  586. Galatians.

  587. That is

  588. exclusion because

  589. of lack of

  590. circumcision.

  591. far as I'm

  592. aware that's

  593. not the

  594. case.

  595. But we do

  596. face numerous

  597. divisions.

  598. We have

  599. divisions of

  600. race and

  601. age and

  602. gender and

  603. social status

  604. and financial

  605. status and

  606. theological

  607. awareness and

  608. historical

  609. connection.

  610. We don't

  611. have signs up

  612. in the

  613. building

  614. segregating

  615. people of

  616. different races

  617. morning tea

  618. here lying

  619. for whites

  620. and we

  621. don't have

  622. that sort of

  623. thing happening.

  624. Hopefully that's

  625. long gone.

  626. We don't have

  627. a KKK

  628. option to

  629. sign up for

  630. Activate.

  631. But we do

  632. have our

  633. prejudices and

  634. implicit beliefs

  635. that linger in

  636. our hearts.

  637. And that's

  638. the key issue

  639. I think that

  640. we need to

  641. be looking

  642. at.

  643. The key

  644. issue is

  645. our hearts.

  646. On the

  647. whole,

  648. our issues

  649. I believe

  650. are more

  651. implicit.

  652. Sort of

  653. like a

  654. motor

  655. mechanic

  656. who

  657. implicitly

  658. assumes that

  659. girls can't

  660. fix cars.

  661. And so

  662. with that

  663. implicit

  664. assumption

  665. he gives

  666. less

  667. attentions

  668. and fewer

  669. opportunities

  670. to his

  671. female

  672. apprentices.

  673. Because it's

  674. an implicit

  675. belief that

  676. he has.

  677. Boys are

  678. better at

  679. fixing

  680. cars than

  681. girls.

  682. And so

  683. my hope in

  684. this series

  685. is that we

  686. would put to

  687. death those

  688. implicit beliefs,

  689. the remaining

  690. corruption in

  691. our hearts

  692. that think or

  693. feel or

  694. acts with

  695. ill will

  696. towards others

  697. because of

  698. difference,

  699. especially race

  700. and ethnicity.

  701. So what I

  702. want to try

  703. and do for

  704. the rest of

  705. our time

  706. together now

  707. is to

  708. help us

  709. to see

  710. and remove

  711. one of the

  712. subtle

  713. sinful

  714. prejudices

  715. that's in

  716. our hearts.

  717. I want us

  718. to focus on

  719. a particular

  720. part of the

  721. text that

  722. was read

  723. out from

  724. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  725. 1.

  726. It's not

  727. the main

  728. point of

  729. the text.

  730. It's an

  731. implication I

  732. think relevant

  733. for our

  734. situation.

  735. It's in

  736. verse

  737. 43,

  738. 43,

  739. Jesus

  740. calls

  741. Philip to

  742. be his

  743. disciple.

  744. In

  745. verse 45,

  746. Philip finds

  747. Nathanael and

  748. says to him,

  749. we have found

  750. the one Moses

  751. wrote about in

  752. the law and

  753. about whom the

  754. prophets also

  755. wrote,

  756. Jesus of

  757. Nazareth,

  758. the son of

  759. Joseph.

  760. In other

  761. words,

  762. Philip has

  763. believed in

  764. Jesus as the

  765. Messiah and

  766. he's eager for

  767. Nathanael to

  768. know him

  769. too.

  770. He identifies

  771. this one

  772. written about

  773. Moses and

  774. the prophets

  775. by calling

  776. him Jesus

  777. of Nazareth.

  778. So he

  779. identifies Jesus

  780. with a town,

  781. with a group

  782. of people who

  783. live in that

  784. town, just a

  785. small town,

  786. about 2,000

  787. people,

  788. something like

  789. that.

  790. And for

  791. whatever reason,

  792. Nathanael responds

  793. to Philip's

  794. announcement in

  795. verse 46 with

  796. Nazareth,

  797. Nazareth.

  798. Can anything

  799. good come out

  800. of Nazareth?

  801. And so his

  802. question amounts

  803. to a foregone

  804. conclusion.

  805. Nothing good

  806. can come out

  807. of Nazareth.

  808. What's the

  809. nature of his

  810. mistake?

  811. One way to

  812. describe it would

  813. be say that it

  814. was sinful

  815. prejudice against

  816. the people of

  817. Nazareth.

  818. He had what

  819. you call a

  820. stereotype of

  821. people from

  822. Nazareth.

  823. He made his

  824. judgment about

  825. Jesus based on

  826. that negative

  827. stereotype.

  828. But another

  829. way to look at

  830. it is that

  831. Nathanael did

  832. what we do

  833. every day.

  834. He made a

  835. generalization

  836. based on

  837. multiple

  838. experiences,

  839. possibly

  840. biblical

  841. evidence,

  842. and then

  843. formed a

  844. probability

  845. conclusion

  846. based on

  847. that

  848. generalization.

  849. So let

  850. me try and

  851. unpack that

  852. in this

  853. context.

  854. My experience

  855. is that the

  856. people of

  857. Nazareth are

  858. pretty ordinary

  859. people.

  860. And I don't

  861. see in the

  862. Old Testament

  863. that the

  864. Messiah actually

  865. comes from

  866. Nazareth.

  867. death.

  868. Therefore,

  869. from those

  870. general

  871. observations,

  872. I think it's

  873. highly

  874. improbable,

  875. if not

  876. impossible,

  877. that Jesus

  878. is the

  879. Messiah.

  880. Now,

  881. before we go

  882. any further,

  883. I would say

  884. generalizing from

  885. our experiences

  886. and drawing

  887. probability

  888. conclusions

  889. is both

  890. inevitable

  891. and good.

  892. The human

  893. brain works

  894. that way.

  895. In fact,

  896. our life

  897. depends on

  898. it working

  899. that way.

  900. For instance,

  901. you observe

  902. that mushrooms

  903. of certain

  904. colors,

  905. particularly

  906. bright colors,

  907. generally are

  908. poisonous.

  909. poisonous.

  910. And so,

  911. when someone

  912. offers you

  913. with a

  914. mushroom,

  915. which is

  916. orange and

  917. yellow and

  918. purple and

  919. says,

  920. here you go,

  921. taste that,

  922. you turn it

  923. down.

  924. You've never

  925. tasted one

  926. before,

  927. ever.

  928. You've never

  929. tested that

  930. particular mushroom

  931. whether it's

  932. poisonous,

  933. but you see

  934. that it belongs

  935. to a general

  936. class of

  937. mushrooms that

  938. are known to

  939. be poisonous.

  940. And so,

  941. you form a

  942. probability

  943. conclusion and

  944. you refuse to

  945. eat it.

  946. Your life

  947. depends on

  948. not treating

  949. that individual

  950. mushroom in

  951. isolation from

  952. your experience.

  953. You with me?

  954. Let me just

  955. say that again.

  956. You're with me?

  957. Fantastic.

  958. Of course,

  959. sometimes our

  960. judgments are

  961. totally wrong.

  962. They seem

  963. legitimate,

  964. but are dead

  965. wrong.

  966. My experiences

  967. in Alice Springs

  968. in 2005

  969. that I mentioned

  970. a couple of

  971. weeks ago.

  972. And there was

  973. another time I

  974. was at a

  975. restaurant with

  976. a former

  977. Chinese member

  978. of our church

  979. one day.

  980. We were sitting

  981. down,

  982. we were just

  983. about to order,

  984. and the

  985. waitress came

  986. over and

  987. this member

  988. spoke to this

  989. waitress in

  990. Mandarin.

  991. And the

  992. waitress looked

  993. at him and

  994. just didn't

  995. say anything.

  996. And I

  997. looked at the

  998. waitress and

  999. I said,

  1000. you've got no

  1001. idea what he

  1002. just said,

  1003. do you?

  1004. And she

  1005. says, no,

  1006. I don't.

  1007. And I just

  1008. laughed.

  1009. It turns out

  1010. she could only

  1011. speak English and

  1012. she was in fact

  1013. Korean.

  1014. The probability

  1015. conclusion based

  1016. on observation and

  1017. experience was in

  1018. fact wrong in that

  1019. moment.

  1020. But that's

  1021. what our brains

  1022. do all the

  1023. time with our

  1024. information.

  1025. Sometimes it's

  1026. sinful.

  1027. I'm driving

  1028. along the road,

  1029. stopped the

  1030. said traffic

  1031. lights, man

  1032. standing at

  1033. the traffic

  1034. lights, based

  1035. on what he

  1036. was wearing,

  1037. the beard

  1038. that he had,

  1039. the haircut

  1040. he had, and

  1041. his general

  1042. appearance.

  1043. I immediately

  1044. concluded,

  1045. he was a

  1046. Muslim man of

  1047. Middle Eastern

  1048. descent.

  1049. The next thing

  1050. that happened in

  1051. my mind was

  1052. sinful.

  1053. I wonder if

  1054. he's linked to

  1055. terrorism in

  1056. any way.

  1057. That was the

  1058. next bit in my

  1059. mind which was

  1060. sinful.

  1061. So what does

  1062. Nathaniel do?

  1063. Was his

  1064. non-sinful,

  1065. fully warranted

  1066. probability judgment

  1067. that proved to be

  1068. wrong?

  1069. Or is Nathaniel

  1070. guilty of sinful

  1071. prejudice?

  1072. I think he's

  1073. guilty.

  1074. Because he doesn't

  1075. say, can the

  1076. Messiah come from

  1077. Nazareth?

  1078. He says,

  1079. Nazareth?

  1080. Can anything good

  1081. come from

  1082. Nazareth?

  1083. Nazareth?

  1084. If his heart were

  1085. right, gracious,

  1086. loving, patient,

  1087. hopeful towards the

  1088. people of Nazareth,

  1089. he might have been

  1090. legitimately skeptical

  1091. about whether the

  1092. Messiah came from

  1093. Nazareth.

  1094. Although he would

  1095. probably would have

  1096. not said, Nazareth,

  1097. can anything good

  1098. come from Nazareth?

  1099. You see, he's

  1100. moved from

  1101. legitimate probability

  1102. conclusion to sinful

  1103. prejudice.

  1104. His view of these

  1105. people is so

  1106. negative that he

  1107. sweeps all of

  1108. them into the

  1109. stereotype including

  1110. Jesus, which is

1111. what I did on that

  1112. night in November

  1113. in 2005 with those

  1114. Aboriginal people.

  1115. notice too that his

  1116. reaction to what

  1117. Philip says is

  1118. immediate.

  1119. He doesn't consider

  1120. the possibility that

  1121. Philip might have

  1122. been right about

  1123. what he knew what

  1124. he's talking about.

  1125. He's temporarily

  1126. blind to his

  1127. prejudice.

  1128. Now here's the

  1129. point that I want

  1130. to make.

  1131. There's a fine line

  1132. between legitimate

  1133. probability judgment

  1134. and sinful

  1135. prejudice.

  1136. but there is

  1137. a line.

  1138. There is a

  1139. line.

  1140. And God

  1141. sees it even

  1142. when we don't.

  1143. And we do

  1144. not, we need

  1145. to be careful

  1146. to not allow

  1147. our

  1148. genuine

  1149. and right

  1150. assessments of

  1151. people and

  1152. circumstances to

  1153. function in our

  1154. hearts in such a

  1155. way that it

  1156. becomes a

  1157. subtle self

  1158. justification for

  1159. sinful prejudice.

  1160. I've noticed

  1161. that since doing

  1162. this series that I

  1163. have less patience

  1164. with some people of

  1165. some races than I

  1166. do with others.

  1167. Our hearts are

  1168. deceitful and

  1169. corruption remains.

1170. We must put it to

  1171. death.

  1172. death.

  1173. And so may the

  1174. Lord give us

  1175. absolute honesty

  1176. with ourselves

  1177. and with him.

  1178. May he expose

  1179. every remnant of

  1180. sinful prejudice.

  1181. May we never use

  1182. the legitimacy of

  1183. generalization to

  1184. cloak what is

  1185. sin.

  1186. And so let me

  1187. close with three

  1188. indications of a

  1189. good heart as we

  1190. struggle with this

  1191. line between

  1192. inevitable

  1193. generalization and

  1194. sinful prejudice.

  1195. It's a heart I

  1196. believe that has

  1197. received Christ,

  1198. knows forgiveness

  1199. and is indwelt by

  1200. the Holy Spirit.

  1201. Number one,

  1202. this good heart

  1203. desires to know

  1204. people and to

  1205. treat people for

  1206. who they are as

  1207. individuals, not

  1208. simply as

  1209. representatives of

  1210. a group.

  1211. if this were not

  1212. so, Jesus

  1213. could not be

  1214. recognized for

  1215. who he is.

  1216. Do you

  1217. desire, I

  1218. mean really

  1219. desire to know

  1220. people and to

  1221. treat people as

  1222. individuals, not

  1223. just samples of a

  1224. group?

  1225. Number two,

  1226. the good heart

  1227. is willing to

  1228. take risks to

  1229. act against

  1230. negative

  1231. expectations and

  1232. belittling

  1233. stereotypes when

  1234. dealing with a

  1235. person.

  1236. Paul says,

  1237. love believes

  1238. all things,

  1239. hopes all

  1240. things, and I

  1241. think he meant

  1242. that love strives

  1243. to believe and

  1244. hope for the

  1245. best and not

  1246. for the worst.

  1247. Number three,

  1248. the good heart

  1249. is ready, like

  1250. Nathaniel, to

  1251. repent quickly

  1252. and fully when

  1253. we have made a

  1254. mistake and

  1255. judged someone

  1256. wrongly.

  1257. This is what I

  1258. want my heart

  1259. to be towards

  1260. you, it's what

  1261. I want your

  1262. heart to be

  1263. towards me, it's

  1264. what I want our

  1265. collective heart to

  1266. be towards the

  1267. city of Chatswood.

  1268. And I believe it

  1269. is vital for God's

  1270. glory and our

  1271. society, our

  1272. society needs to

  1273. see this kind of

  1274. racial harmony and

  1275. peace in action.

  1276. And so I would

  1277. invite you to start

  1278. right now.

  1279. when I say now,

  1280. I mean when we

  1281. finish here and

  1282. move out to

  1283. morning tea, we

  1284. finish our formal

  1285. time together.

  1286. I don't want to

  1287. trivialise the

  1288. gravity of the

  1289. issue that we're

  1290. dealing with in

  1291. these series by

  1292. making the

  1293. application trite

  1294. and simple, but

  1295. let's do it

  1296. anyway, let's

  1297. start there.

  1298. Why not move

  1299. out of here and

  1300. talk with someone

  1301. who's different

  1302. than you?

  1303. As a starting

  1304. point, not just

  1305. gather with the

  1306. people that you

  1307. normally gather

  1308. with, across

  1309. boundaries.

  1310. Maybe next week

  1311. when you come to

  1312. church, sit with

  1313. someone different

  1314. than you.

  1315. Ask God to

  1316. help you by the

  1317. power of his

  1318. spirit to build

  1319. bridges of peace

  1320. and harmony.

  1321. I think it's

  1322. absolutely essential

  1323. and it has been

  1324. for us and the

  1325. Christian church

  1326. for decades to

  1327. deal with this

  1328. issue.

  1329. John Stott

  1330. wrote this in

  1331. his Ephesians

  1332. commentary back in

  1333. 1970-something,

  1334. 76 I think,

  1335. 79.

  1336. He said,

  1337. it is simply

  1338. impossible with

  1339. any shred of

  1340. Christian integrity

  1341. to go on

  1342. proclaiming that

  1343. Jesus by his

  1344. cross has

  1345. abolished the

  1346. old divisions and

  1347. created a single

  1348. new humanity of

  1349. love while at the

  1350. same time we are

  1351. contradicting our

  1352. message by tolerating

  1353. racial or social or

  1354. other barriers

  1355. within our church

  1356. fellowship.

1357. We need to get the

  1358. failures of the

  1359. church on our

  1360. conscience to feel

  1361. the offense to

  1362. Christ, to weep

  1363. over the credibility

  1364. gap between the

  1365. church's talk and

  1366. the church's walk,

  1367. to repent of our

  1368. readiness to

  1369. excuse and even

  1370. condone our

  1371. failures and to

  1372. determine to do

  1373. something about it.

  1374. I wonder if

  1375. anything is more

  1376. urgent today for
