  1. every tribe or every group of people has its defining markers.

  2. I thought for safety's sake, I might start with us.

  3. So North Shore people, you know, has defining markers like boat shoes,

  4. Range Rovers, polo shirts,

  5. that thing that we never admit about how we think we're better

  6. than anyone who lives anywhere else in Sydney.

  7. Then, of course, there's the Westies who love stubbies, thongs, tattoos.

  8. Shoes, country people, who, from what I can gather from Steve,

  9. is basically boots, utes and guns,

  10. and perhaps a little bit of good hospitality.

  11. Now, I know there are stereotypes, there are general, there are exceptions,

  12. but stereotypes exist for a reason.

  13. There's always something there.

  14. But what I wanted to ask is, what is it that marks this tribe?

  15. What is it that marks Christians as distinct?

  16. Or, if you like to ask it another way,

  17. how do you tell if someone is actually a Christian?

  18. Or whether or not they're just kind of doing lip service

  19. to being a Christian and following Jesus?

  20. What's the most important evidence of faith in Jesus?

  21. Is it attire?

  22. Socks and sandals?

  23. I had a friend in Bible college

  24. who purchased a Bible that was of the perfect size

  25. to fit in a satchel that he also owned,

  26. so that he would always be wearing his Bible

  27. in his Bible satchel.

  28. Is that the definitive marker of someone who is genuine

  29. when it comes to following Jesus?

  30. Is it maybe a personality trait,

  31. something that we don't want to admit,

  32. like being judgmental,

  33. being the moral police?

  34. Well, there's probably lots of things that matter

  35. when it comes to being genuine in the way we follow Jesus.

  36. But tonight I want to look at one that,

  37. as you go through Scripture,

  38. is quite conspicuous and unavoidable.

  39. And so I want to throw a whole bunch of verses

  40. at you really quickly.

  41. They're going to be on the screen

  42. so that you can read them with me.

  43. And then we'll come back and look at it in the end.

  44. So first up is Micah 6, verse 6 to 8.

    Micah 6:6–8

  45. It says,

  46. He has shown you,

  47. O mortal, what is good.

  48. And what does the Lord require of you?

  49. To act justly,

  50. and to love mercy,

  51. and to walk humbly with your God.

  52. Again, Luke 3, verse 11.

    Luke 3:11

  53. Anyone who has two shirts

  54. should share with the one who has none.

  55. Anyone who has food should do the same.

  56. Psalm 41.

  57. Blessed are those who have regard for the weak.

  58. The Lord delivers them in times of trouble.

  59. Proverbs 14.

  60. Whoever oppresses the poor

  61. shows contempt for their maker,

  62. but whoever is kind to the needy

  63. honors God.

  64. Isaiah 58.

  65. If you spend yourselves

  66. on behalf of the hungry

  67. and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,

  68. then your light will rise in the darkness

  69. and your night will become

  70. like the noonday.

  71. And then James 1.27.

  72. Religion that God our Father accepts

  73. as pure and faultless is this.

  74. That's a significant introduction sentence.

  75. You know you need to pay attention

  76. to what comes after that.

  77. Religion that God our Father accepts

  78. as pure and faultless is this.

  79. To look after orphans and widows

  80. in their distress

  81. and to keep oneself

  82. from being polluted by the world.

  83. One of the distinct markers

  84. of those who follow Jesus

  85. is a social conscience.

  86. And more than just a social conscience

  87. and an investment,

  88. a concern for those who are in need,

  89. essential to genuine faith

  90. is a heart that cares about

  91. the less fortunate,

  92. that cares about the widow,

  93. the orphan,

  94. the oppressed.

  95. And look,

  96. on one level that just seems

  97. really obvious.

  98. It just makes sense.

  99. It just kind of fits with

  100. who Jesus is

  101. and what he was like.

  102. The general vibe of Jesus

  103. was to go and hang out

  104. with the downtrodden,

  105. to be nice to those

  106. that everybody else

  107. left to the side.

  108. But you might be wondering,

  109. given that we had

  110. a fair trade expo today,

  111. is this sermon

  112. just a bit of a

  113. fair trade beat-up?

  114. Am I just trying to

  115. pump the tyres

  116. of a particular cause

  117. that we're focusing on

  118. this week

  119. to try and, you know,

  120. get you revved up

  121. in that direction?

  122. Well, maybe a better question

  123. to ask would be,

  124. why does this matter?

  125. Why is this so significant

  126. when it comes to testing

  127. the genuineness

  128. of someone's faith,

  129. someone's claim

  130. to follow Jesus?

  131. I want to give you

  132. three reasons.

  133. I think there's probably more,

  134. but I want to give you

  135. three tonight

  136. that might be a good question,

  137. a good test for you

  138. in terms of whether or not

  139. this is distinctive

  140. in your life.

  141. Three reasons this matters.

  142. Firstly,

  143. because all people

  144. matter to God.

  145. Not just some,

  146. not just good,

  147. not just Christians,

  148. all people matter to God.

  149. If we go back

  150. to the very beginning

  151. of Scripture,

  152. the first thing

  153. that God does

  154. when He creates people

  155. is He creates them

  156. valuable.

  157. He puts an intrinsic

  158. dignity into people.

  159. When He creates humans,

  160. He puts His image

  161. on them.

  162. He by default

  163. creates them

  164. as something

  165. that is representative

  166. of Him.

  167. And so we need

  168. to look at all humans,

  169. local,

  170. foreign,

  171. friendly,

  172. enemy,

  173. whatever,

  174. as having some value,

  175. some importance,

  176. whether they're rich,

  177. poor,

  178. or otherwise.

  179. I don't know

  180. if you've noticed

  181. that currently

  182. in our country

  183. as we debate

  184. whether or not

  185. we should accept

  186. refugees,

  187. and particularly

  188. Syrian refugees

  189. at the moment,

  190. well-meaning people

  191. are making suggestions

  192. like,

  193. maybe we should

  194. just have

  195. Christian refugees

  196. come in.

  197. Maybe we should

  198. just have

  199. non-Muslim refugees

  200. come in.

  201. And maybe

  202. if you want

  203. to be generous

  204. it's a security fear,

  205. whatever it is,

  206. but as Christians

  207. from the very

  208. beginning of Scripture

  209. God doesn't

  210. distinguish

  211. values

  212. between different

  213. kinds of people.

  214. He creates

  215. all people

  216. in His image.

  217. Muslim,

  218. Christian,

  219. Syrian,

  220. Iraqi,

  221. Iranian,

  222. Australian.

  223. Have you ever

  224. noticed how

  225. when there is

  226. a disaster

  227. in the world,

  228. whether it's

  229. a natural disaster,

  230. a plane crash,

  231. whatever it is,

  232. that we get

  233. given a particular

  234. emphasis in the story.

  235. So a plane

  236. has crashed,

  237. 300 people are dead,

  238. and there was

  239. three Australians

  240. on board.

  241. Or there's

  242. an earthquake,

  243. X amount of people

  244. are displaced,

  245. etc.

  246. This many Australians

  247. were involved.

  248. Now,

  249. on one level,

  250. sure,

  251. we're in Australia,

  252. there's a chance

  253. we might know them,

  254. but have you ever

  255. asked why that

  256. detail is so

  257. important?

  258. Why are those

  259. three Australians

  260. or ten Australians

  261. or fifty Australians

  262. more significant

  263. than the other

  264. 300 or 5,000

  265. or whoever it is

  266. that's lost their

  267. life?

  268. Now,

  269. I want to be

  270. gracious because

  271. it's loss,

  272. it's pain.

  273. There's so much

  274. emotion wrapped up

  275. in this sort of

  276. a topic,

  277. but I wonder

  278. if the reason

  279. that we go

  280. there first,

  281. I wonder if the

  282. reason we

  283. emphasise the

  284. Australians

  285. is because

  286. we tend to

  287. view the world

  288. through a lens

  289. that starts

  290. with me.

  291. and so if

  292. they're Australian,

  293. it's more

  294. closely

  295. associated

  296. with me.

  297. I can more

  298. closely identify

  299. with who

  300. they are.

  301. My value

  302. almost gets

  303. connected to

  304. who they are,

  305. whereas if I've

  306. never met them

  307. or seen them,

  308. then it's still

  309. sad, but it's

  310. not the same,

  311. is it?

  312. But could it

  313. be that the

  314. Bible's painting

  315. a really

  316. different picture

  317. about the way

  318. God calls us

  319. to view the

  320. world?

  321. Could it be

  322. that every

  323. single person

  324. matters and

  325. is valuable?

  326. The second

  327. passage that

  328. Jimmy read out

  329. for us in

  330. Matthew 25

  331. is a scary

  332. passage in

  333. many ways.

  334. It's a picture

  335. of the final

  336. judgment.

  337. Jesus

  338. gathers

  339. everybody in

  340. front of his

  341. judgment throne

  342. and like a

  343. shepherd begins

  344. to sort between

  345. the sheeps,

  346. those who are

  347. genuinely following

  348. him, and the

  349. goats, those who

  350. maybe have paid

  351. lip service, those

  352. who have claimed

  353. to be Christian,

  354. but for whatever

  355. reason are not

  356. genuine.

  357. And listen to

  358. the words.

  359. It says,

  360. the king will

  361. say to those

  362. on his right,

  363. this is to those

  364. who have been

  365. faithful,

  366. come you who

  367. are blessed by

  368. my father,

  369. take your

  370. inheritance,

  371. the kingdom

  372. prepared for you

  373. since the

  374. creation of

  375. the world,

  376. for I was

  377. hungry and

  378. you gave me

  379. something to

  380. eat.

  381. I was thirsty

  382. and you gave

  383. me something

  384. to drink.

  385. I was a

  386. stranger and

  387. you invited

  388. me in.

  389. I needed

  390. clothes and

  391. you clothed

  392. me.

  393. I was sick

  394. and you

  395. looked after

  396. me.

  397. I was in

  398. prison and

  399. you came

  400. to visit

  401. me.

  402. Then the

  403. righteous

  404. will answer

  405. him,

  406. Lord,

  407. when did

  408. we see you

  409. hungry and

  410. feed you,

  411. or thirsty

  412. and give you

  413. something to

  414. drink?

  415. When did

  416. we see you

  417. a stranger

  418. and invite you

  419. in, or

  420. needing clothes

  421. and clothe

  422. you?

  423. When did

  424. we see you

  425. sick or in

  426. prison and

  427. go to

  428. visit you?

  429. It's the

  430. key line.

  431. The king

  432. will reply,

  433. I tell you

  434. the truth,

  435. whatever you

  436. did for one

  437. of the least

  438. of these

  439. brothers of

  440. mine,

  441. you did

  442. for me.

  443. God

  444. associates

  445. his own

  446. worth

  447. with his

  448. image bearers.

  449. The way

  450. that we

  451. treat people

  452. is directly

  453. connected

  454. to the

  455. way that

  456. we're

  457. treating

  458. God.

  459. They're

  460. actually

  461. inseparable.

  462. He has

  463. designed

  464. our

  465. existence,

  466. he's designed

  467. our interactions

  468. and our

  469. relationships

  470. in such

  471. a way

  472. that our

  473. relationship

  474. with him

  475. is not

  476. just some

  477. abstract

  478. spiritual

  479. reality,

  480. but it is

  481. played out

  482. in our

  483. relationships

  484. with one

  485. another.

  486. all people

  487. matter to

  488. God

  489. because he

  490. has created

  491. them as

  492. valuable.

  493. The second

  494. reason that

  495. this social

  496. conscience is

  497. so significant

  498. for us as

  499. followers of

  500. Jesus is that

  501. we've got to

  502. remember that

  503. the world's

  504. not supposed

  505. to be like

  506. this.

  507. Now,

  508. sure,

  509. we live in a

  510. really,

  511. really privileged

  512. part of the

  513. world,

  514. but when we

  515. look at those

  516. news stories,

  517. there's this bit

  518. of us that

  519. goes,

  520. that's not

  521. right,

  522. is it?

  523. That's not

  524. what God

  525. intended.

  526. Again,

  527. Genesis 1,

  528. God's good

  529. design,

  530. creation itself

  531. has an

  532. inbuilt

  533. provision.

  534. There's this

  535. pattern in

  536. Genesis 1,

  537. when God's

  538. creating,

  539. he's walking

  540. around,

  541. let there be

  542. light,

  543. let there be

  544. sea,

  545. let there be

  546. land,

  547. let there be

  548. trees,

  549. let there be

  550. all these

  551. things,

  552. let there be

  553. animals,

  554. and eventually

  555. people.

  556. There's a

  557. pattern.

  558. God always

  559. creates what

  560. is required

  561. for life

  562. before he

  563. creates the

  564. life.

  565. He creates

  566. the sea

  567. before he

  568. creates the

  569. creatures to

  570. go in it.

  571. He creates

  572. the plants

  573. and trees

  574. and fruit

  575. and food

  576. before he

  577. creates the

  578. animals and

  579. the people

  580. to live there

  581. and be fed

  582. by it.

  583. Creation

  584. itself has

  585. provision designed

  586. into it.

  587. And in fact,

  588. current statistics

  589. tell us the same

  590. story.

  591. There is enough

  592. food,

  593. enough money,

  594. enough medicine

  595. for everyone

  596. on the earth

  597. right now.

  598. But oppression

  599. and greed

  600. and injustice

  601. mean that there

  602. is an inequality

  603. of distribution.

  604. It's not

  605. supposed to be

  606. like this.

  607. And so we've

  608. got to understand

  609. that what

  610. happened from

  611. that perfect

  612. design that

  613. God had

  614. to our kind

  615. of messed

  616. up reality

  617. reality now

  618. is not

  619. something that

  620. we can fix

  621. with money.

  622. It's not a

  623. matter of us

  624. turning around

  625. going,

  626. I need to be

  627. more generous.

  628. I need to be

  629. more caring.

  630. The issue

  631. that takes us

  632. from a good

  633. garden of

  634. Eden to a

  635. messed up

  636. right now

  637. is sin.

  638. The problem

  639. and the reason

  640. this matters

  641. for us as

  642. Christians is

  643. because this

  644. is our

  645. core issue.

  646. Sin is the

  647. reality of us

  648. rejecting God,

  649. telling him that

  650. he doesn't

  651. matter,

  652. living as if

  653. we're more

  654. important,

  655. and sin is

  656. the reason

  657. that there is

  658. poverty in

  659. the world.

  660. Sin is the

  661. reason that

  662. there is

  663. suffering in

  664. the world.

  665. Sin is the

  666. reason that

  667. there is

  668. pain and

  669. oppression and

  670. injustice.

  671. And what that

  672. does is tell us

  673. two things.

  674. One, this isn't

  675. a money issue,

  676. it's a heart

  677. issue.

  678. And two, this

  679. isn't someone

  680. else's issue,

  681. this is my

  682. issue.

  683. Now I want to

  684. take a step

  685. sideways just for a

  686. second and just

  687. talk about sin

  688. and consequence.

  689. What I'm not

  690. saying and what

  691. the Bible doesn't

  692. teach is that I

  693. be selfish here and

  694. look after myself and

  695. as a consequence God's

  696. going to make me

  697. poor later on.

  698. It's not sin and

  699. punishment like that,

  700. it's not that

  701. direct, but it's

  702. more like the

  703. collective consequence

  704. of sin,

  705. everybody's sin,

  706. results in this

  707. disproportionate

  708. allocation of

  709. wealth and

  710. starvation.

  711. It's kind of like if

  712. you wander along

  713. next to Sydney

  714. Harbour, you

  715. might see a

  716. plastic bag floating

  717. in the water,

  718. you might see

  719. somebody's Coke

  720. can, a Snickers

  721. wrapper, some

  722. sort of floating

  723. slick that you

  724. can't quite

  725. identify, it's

  726. not real nice.

  727. And you might

  728. sit there at that

  729. moment as you

  730. walk past and

  731. think, man,

  732. whoever did that

  733. should have to

  734. pay.

  735. Those dodgy

  736. boat owners or

  737. whoever it is

  738. that's made that

  739. mess, they should

  740. have to clean

  741. that up.

  742. But what you've

  743. got to understand

  744. is you're part of

  745. the problem.

  746. Every time you

  747. flush your toilet,

  748. it's got to go

  749. somewhere.

  750. I mean, it's

  751. treated, it's

  752. looked after, but

  753. it ends up in

  754. the ocean.

  755. It's kind of

  756. like that with

  757. sin.

  758. It's not so

  759. much that your

  760. sin will have

  761. results for you,

  762. but ultimately a

  763. whole world full of

  764. people living for

  765. themselves instead of

  766. for God, a whole

  767. world full of people

  768. trying to look after

  769. themselves instead of

  770. each other, results

  771. in some people

  772. missing out, results

  773. in some people

  774. starving, some

  775. people living in

  776. what we would

  777. consider unlivable

  778. conditions.

  779. And so there's an

  780. inbuilt warning for

  781. us today.

  782. Be very careful

  783. as you reflect on

  784. issues like poverty

  785. and oppression,

  786. slave labour, all

  787. that sort of stuff,

  788. be very careful

  789. not to look down

  790. on the perpetrators.

  791. Don't sit there

  792. and tut-tut at

  793. Nike and their

  794. sweatshops.

  795. Be sad, be

  796. concerned, be

  797. frustrated, but

  798. don't judge.

  799. Because you sin

  800. too.

  801. You're part of the

  802. problem.

  803. I'm part of the

  804. problem.

  805. You and I

  806. contribute to the

  807. issues.

  808. part of the

  809. issue.

  810. Part of why this

  811. matters for us so

  812. much as Christians,

  813. part of why this is a

  814. measure of the

  815. genuineness of our

  816. faith is because it

  817. takes us back to our

  818. biggest issue, our

  819. rejection of who God

  820. is, our rejection of

  821. his plan for our life.

  822. And so tonight I want

  823. to encourage you, rather

  824. than feeling like a

  825. victim in a bad world,

  826. maybe instead you can

  827. put your hand up and

  828. confess that you're part

  829. of the issue.

  830. And then you can

  831. depend on God's

  832. goodness to forgive you

  833. and use you in spite of

  834. your weaknesses and

  835. limitations to still be

  836. contributing in a

  837. helpful way.

  838. Poverty and inequality

  839. and oppression is part of

  840. a bigger issue.

  841. It's part of a sin issue.

  842. It's the issue that Jesus

  843. came to fix.

  844. I want to go to the

  845. Isaiah passage that was

  846. read out for us and if

  847. you can get that in

  848. front of you, I encourage

  849. you to have Isaiah 42

  850. open.

  851. This passage comes at a

  852. point in Israel's history

  853. where they are in exile.

  854. That means they've been

  855. dragged away from their

  856. homeland.

  857. They're living as slaves,

  858. if you like, servants of

  859. another country, longing

  860. for a better time, crying

  861. out to a God who had

  862. promised to look after

  863. them.

  864. And listen to this short

  865. few verses which is

  866. pointing towards Jesus.

  867. Listen to the

  868. description of what

  869. Jesus is going to do

  870. and how he's going to

  871. do it.

  872. Chapter 42, verse 1.

  873. Here is my servant whom

  874. I uphold, my chosen one

  875. in whom I delight.

  876. I will put my spirit on

  877. him and, this is his job,

  878. he will bring justice to

  879. the nations.

  880. He will not shout or cry

  881. out or raise his voice in

  882. the streets.

  883. A bruised reed he will not

  884. break and a smouldering

  885. wick he will not snuff out.

  886. In faithfulness he will

  887. bring forth justice.

  888. He will not falter or be

  889. discouraged till he

  890. establishes justice on the

  891. earth.

  892. In his law the islands will

  893. put their hope.

  894. Jesus comes to bring

  895. justice.

  896. Now we know, we read the

  897. New Testament, Jesus comes

  898. to deal with sin and that's

  899. the point.

  900. They're actually connected.

  901. It's the same problem.

  902. It requires the same

  903. solution.

  904. In the book of Isaiah,

  905. justice is given a much

  906. richer definition.

  907. Sometimes when we think

  908. justice, our mind goes

  909. straight away to a

  910. courtroom.

  911. We think about punishments

  912. given out.

  913. We think about people being

  914. maybe vindicated if they've

  915. been wrongly accused.

  916. We think about this

  917. judicial decree.

  918. And that's part of the

  919. picture.

  920. That's the Matthew 25

  921. picture where the King

  922. Jesus sits on the throne

  923. and says, you're a sheep,

  924. you're a goat.

  925. He does decree, innocent,

  926. guilty, on board.

  927. But there's more going on

  928. here.

  929. What Isaiah does for us

  930. is help us to see that when

  931. God talks about justice,

  932. it includes all of his good

  933. intention.

  934. It includes essentially his

  935. will.

  936. What the servant will bring

  937. is what was always supposed

  938. to be.

  939. What the servant will do is

  940. fix everything that's

  941. wrong.

  942. What Jesus does when he

  943. turns up is not just some

  944. abstract up there, fix some

  945. sin so that one day we go

  946. to heaven.

  947. He turns up to bring justice,

  948. to deal with inequality, to

  949. deal with poverty, to deal

  950. with all the symptoms of sin

  951. that exist in our lives, to

  952. deal with sickness and pain

  953. and frustration and anxiety

  954. and all these things.

  955. You can see it in Jesus'

  956. ministry.

  957. Yes, he preaches.

  958. He says, come.

  959. He says, put your trust in

  960. me.

  961. Be forgiven.

  962. But he also feeds people

  963. and heals people and deals

  964. with physical needs because

  965. all of the inequality, all of

  966. the problems that we face in

  967. life come back to the same

  968. root issue of sin, of rejecting

  969. God.

  970. There's something really cool

  971. about the way that the servant

  972. will bring justice.

  973. on one level, it doesn't

  974. sound inspiring when you

  975. think about the kind of

  976. opposition that you would

  977. face if you were on a justice

  978. crusade in our world now.

  979. But listen to them.

  980. Verse 2.

  981. He will not shout or cry out or

  982. raise his voice in the streets.

  983. A bruised reed he will not

  984. break.

  985. A smouldering wick he will not

  986. snuff out.

  987. In faithfulness, he will bring

  988. forth justice.

  989. He will not falter or be

  990. discouraged till he establishes

  991. justice on the earth.

  992. He will face opposition, but the

  993. means by which he will bring

  994. justice is not force, but sacrifice.

  995. At his cost, at his expense, we

  996. can be vindicated.

  997. God goes to extraordinary lengths

  998. to fix what's wrong with the

  999. world.

1000. He sends his son so that people

1001. like us who tell God whatever we

  1002. don't care can actually have a

  1003. relationship with him.

1004. But more than that, he sends his

1005. son so that people like us who

1006. treat each other like we don't

1007. matter, or at very least treat

1008. each other like I'm number one,

1009. can actually have the kind of

1010. relationships we were supposed to

  1011. have.

1012. The kind of relationships we were

1013. designed to have of service and

  1014. love.

1015. This matters for us as Christians

1016. because all people matter to God

1017. and it matters because it's not the

1018. way it's supposed to be.

1019. It's not the picture of God's good

  1020. design at the beginning.

1021. It's not the picture of what Jesus

1022. has achieved and we're going to

  1023. enjoy in heaven.

1024. And now that Jesus has come, the

1025. work he has begun, he has entrusted

  1026. to us to continue.

1027. To defend the cause of the

  1028. fatherless and the widow.

1029. plus this is evidence of his grace to

  1030. us.

1031. This is how grace plays out.

1032. It shifts our perspective on life and

1033. the things that we do.

1034. In my previous church, I had a friend

1035. who I did ministry with.

1036. I'm not going to mention his name

  1037. because it's a pseudo-incriminating

  1038. story.

  1039. He's a good guy.

  1040. I love him.

  1041. He loves Jesus.

  1042. He's fantastic.

1043. He was a great resource for me.

1044. One of the rules that you have in

1045. ministry or that I have in ministry

1046. is that you should never pay full

  1047. price.

  1048. Mainly because I don't have enough

  1049. money.

1050. And so whenever we're running

  1051. anything, I'm trying to get a

  1052. discount.

1053. I'm trying to sort of wrangle a deal.

  1054. I want a cheap bus.

  1055. I want a free bus.

1056. I want the pizzas for a discount.

1057. I want whatever I can do to not pay

1058. the full price for things.

1059. He took this to a whole other level.

1060. We used to run quite a big youth

  1061. ministry camp.

1062. We had sort of 400 plus people on

  1063. this camp.

1064. And he would get us like seven

1065. minibuses for free like that.

1066. Like he had people tripping over

  1067. themselves, competing with one

1068. another to give us good deals.

1069. He just, I don't know how he did it.

1070. One year on camp, it was like 40

  1071. degree plus.

1072. We were in this big barn for our

  1073. meetings.

  1074. It was horrific.

1075. Kids would get bleeding noses from

  1076. the heat.

  1077. It was terrible.

1078. And so one year he turns around to

1079. me after being on the phone for 15

  1080. minutes.

1081. He goes, oh, I've convinced a company

1082. to travel down, set up portable air

  1083. conditioning in the hall.

1084. And then at the end of the week,

1085. pack it up and take it away for free.

  1086. I'm like, that's great.

  1087. But how?

1088. I remember one time in particular,

1089. we were just out to dinner.

  1090. It wasn't ministry.

1091. We went to the good old all-you-can-eat

  1092. Pizza Hut.

1093. Really is a sad reality that they're

  1094. all gone.

1095. Just have a moment of pause and

1096. lament over the fact that that's not

  1097. around.

1098. Anyway, we went to Pizza Hut all-you-can-eat.

1099. It was a good value restaurant.

1100. For those of you who missed that

1101. reality, which actually might be a few

1102. of you, it was just like a smorgasbord

1103. of pizza and you could just keep going

1104. back and back and back.

1105. They had like a dessert bar as well,

1106. so all the soft serve you can eat.

  1107. It was amazing.

1108. So the only thing lacking was

1109. refillable soft drinks, but you know,

  1110. that's for another day.

1111. So we're in Pizza Hut.

  1112. We're eating pizza.

  1113. We're chatting.

  1114. We're having a good time.

1115. And it comes to the end of our meal

1116. and it's almost time to pay.

1117. And I notice he, my friend gets up

  1118. and disappears.

1119. Sort of didn't think heaps of it.

1120. Maybe he's going to the bathroom,

  1121. whatever.

1122. And the manager happened to be sitting

1123. in a booth a couple of spots away.

1124. I think she was doing the figures for

  1125. the night.

1126. They were getting ready to close up.

1127. And I noticed out of the corner of my

1128. eye that my friend sat down on her

1129. table and obviously they were chatting.

1130. And a few minutes later he comes back

1131. and he goes, okay, we can go.

1132. And I said, did you pay for dinner?

  1133. He said, no.

1134. I said, do we need to pay for dinner?

  1135. He said, no.

  1136. I went, okay.

  1137. Sounds good.

  1138. And out we go.

1139. And it wasn't until we got outside

  1140. that I went, wait a minute.

1141. Why don't we have to pay for dinner?

  1142. What just happened?

1143. And he says to me, well, I just explained

1144. to the manager that the pizza available

1145. on the All You Can Eat bar wasn't of

1146. sufficient variety that I could actually

1147. call it All You Can Eat.

1148. And also the time, amount of time that

1149. it took for our drinks to arrive after

1150. ordering at the beginning weren't

1151. sufficient to be serviced that we should

  1152. pay for.

1153. And she agreed, and so they agreed,

1154. that our dinner would be free.

1155. Now let's remember that All You Can Eat

  1156. Pizza Hut was a whopping $5.95.

  1157. Generous savings.

1158. Now, like I said, I love my friend.

  1159. He's good value.

1160. He is a blessing in many ways.

1161. But I was reflecting this week on something

1162. that he maybe has in hyperversion,

1163. but is true of all of us.

1164. The way we approach all of our interactions

1165. like that, where there's money involved,

1166. where it's shopping, eating, whatever,

1167. the number one dictating factor for us is,

1168. maybe I'm speaking out of turn,

  1169. but I don't think I am.

1170. The number one factor is,

1171. how can I get the best deal for me?

  1172. Think about it.

1173. You go shopping for something,

1174. you go from shop to shop to find the cheapest place,

1175. and then you go online to get it even cheaper

1176. once you've found the right size.

  1177. It's how we shop.

1178. And it makes sense in so many ways,

  1179. that like, that's logical,

1180. I don't want to pay any more than I have to.

1181. But can you see that behind that mentality

  1182. is an attitude of,

1183. this is all about my outcome.

1184. This is all about my experience.

1185. There's not even a level of awareness or engagement

1186. of the person on the other side of the counter,

1187. let alone the person who drove whatever it is

1188. and delivered it to the shop,

1189. let alone the person who made it,

  1190. let alone anyone else.

1191. The driving thing for us is,

  1192. me.

  1193. Me.

1194. The reason issues like poverty

1195. and caring for those in need

1196. matter when it comes to being a Christian

  1197. is because it's a reflection

1198. of the change that God has worked in us.

  1199. See, it makes sense

  1200. to look after yourself.

  1201. It makes sense

1202. to try and provide for yourself.

  1203. It makes sense

1204. to get the best scenario for you

  1205. unless

1206. somebody else has already done it.

  1207. See,

1208. if you claim to be a follower of Jesus,

  1209. what you're saying is,

  1210. God loves me.

  1211. God provides for me.

1212. God gives me so much more

1213. than I could possibly need or deserve.

  1214. God has guaranteed

  1215. my eternal future.

  1216. God has forgiven me.

  1217. God has given me

1218. every good thing in my life.

  1219. And so actually,

  1220. it doesn't make sense

1221. to then go out into the shops

1222. and live as if you need to look after number one.

1223. You need to get the best deal for you.

  1224. Because actually,

1225. God is already looking after you

1226. and He's told you in Scripture

1227. that He cares about the person

1228. on the other side of the counter.

1229. He cares about the person

  1230. that made that shirt

  1231. or that coffee

1232. or whatever else it is.

  1233. They're valuable to Him.

  1234. The Christian life

  1235. is a redefined reality.

1236. We have a new starting point.

  1237. See,

  1238. the issue

  1239. back at the beginning

  1240. when we talked about

  1241. that news story

  1242. that tells us about

  1243. the three Australians,

  1244. and again,

  1245. I do it.

1246. I'm not casting judgment on you.

1247. I do it as well.

  1248. I go,

  1249. oh, you know,

  1250. three Australians.

  1251. That's really sad.

  1252. The issue there is

1253. that the reason that's sad

  1254. is because

  1255. that connects

  1256. to where I am.

  1257. Because the way

  1258. I view justice

  1259. and poverty

  1260. and everything else

  1261. in the world

  1262. is defined

  1263. by how it connects

  1264. to me.

  1265. But as a Christian,

  1266. that's not

1267. how we view the world.

  1268. The world is defined

  1269. and sin is defined

  1270. and the issues

  1271. in the world

  1272. are defined

  1273. by how does this

  1274. relate to God.

  1275. And God says,

  1276. every person

  1277. on that plane

  1278. matters to me.

  1279. God says,

  1280. every person

  1281. who's making a shirt

  1282. or a shoe

  1283. or a meal

1284. or whatever it else is

  1285. matters to me.

  1286. And then He says,

1287. I'm going to look after you.

  1288. So we don't have

  1289. to shop anymore

  1290. with this fear

  1291. of who's going

  1292. to look after me.

  1293. We don't have

  1294. to live our lives

  1295. anymore with this fear

  1296. of what about me?

  1297. God's got that covered.

1298. So I guess just to finish,

1299. I wanted to ask the question,

1300. where does a Fair Trade Expo fit?

1301. Whether you made it here today

1302. for the Fair Trade Expo

  1303. or not,

  1304. you know roughly

  1305. the gist of it.

  1306. Fair Trade basically

  1307. means two things.

  1308. One is you pay

  1309. a little bit more

  1310. for the same product.

  1311. Then you have to.

  1312. And two,

  1313. the person who's making

  1314. that product

  1315. gets paid

  1316. what they deserve.

1317. That's what Fair Trade is.

  1318. There's a whole bunch

  1319. of other stuff

  1320. about investing

  1321. in their businesses

  1322. and enabling them

  1323. to be sustainable

  1324. and doing training

  1325. and lending of money

  1326. and a whole bunch

  1327. of other things

  1328. which you can research

1329. and all sorts of stuff.

1330. But a Fair Trade Expo,

  1331. where does it fit

1332. when it comes to checking

  1333. our social conscience,

1334. our love for the poor?

1335. Well, it's not the solution.

  1336. Buying Fair Trade

  1337. won't fix poverty

  1338. in the world

  1339. because we know

  1340. that poverty

1341. is a symptom of sin.

  1342. Only Jesus

  1343. can fix that.

  1344. But what something

  1345. like Fair Trade does

  1346. or just giving generally

  1347. to those in need

  1348. does

  1349. is it gives us

  1350. a chance

  1351. to remember,

  1352. to remind ourselves

  1353. that we don't have

  1354. to be worried

  1355. about me

  1356. because God is.

  1357. It's a chance

  1358. to remind ourselves

  1359. that as we go

  1360. looking for the things

  1361. that we need,

  1362. and I use that

  1363. very loosely,

  1364. God has already

  1365. provided it all.

  1366. Maybe it gives us

  1367. a chance

1368. to get a bigger picture

1369. of the kinds of people

  1370. that live

  1371. in the world

  1372. with us

  1373. that God cares about

  1374. that matter

1375. and the kind of situations

  1376. they're living in.

1377. But more than anything else,

  1378. shopping,

  1379. Fair Trade,

1380. giving to those in need,

  1381. caring for people

  1382. who need it

  1383. is a chance

  1384. for us

  1385. to come back

  1386. and just again

  1387. be reminded

  1388. of the confidence

  1389. and hope

  1390. we have in Jesus.

  1391. A Fair Trade Expo

  1392. is not designed

1393. to make you feel guilty.

  1394. This sermon

  1395. is not designed

  1396. to make you go

  1397. and spend more

  1398. on Fair Trade

  1399. this Christmas

  1400. or feel guilty

  1401. about every present

  1402. you buy

  1403. or anything like that.

1404. It's kind of not the point.

  1405. The point is

  1406. God loves you.

  1407. God has provided

  1408. for you in Jesus

1409. and so you don't have

  1410. to stress

1411. with the what about me

  1412. question anymore.

  1413. You're released

  1414. to go and love

  1415. and invest

  1416. in people

  1417. that you'll never meet

  1418. but who right now

  1419. live in conditions

  1420. that we just

  1421. wouldn't tolerate.

  1422. It's a chance

  1423. for you

  1424. to be reminded

  1425. that the things

  1426. of this world

  1427. are temporary

  1428. and all the things

  1429. that really matter

  1430. can't be taken away

  1431. anyway.

  1432. It's a chance

  1433. for you

  1434. to loosen your grip

  1435. on the things

1436. that God has given you

  1437. so that you can

  1438. tighten your grip

  1439. on Him.

  1440. Let's pray.

  1441. Let's pray.

  1442. Father God,

  1443. we want to admit

  1444. that sometimes

  1445. when we look

  1446. at things like this

  1447. it's really easy

  1448. to realize

  1449. that we suck

  1450. at this.

  1451. It's really easy

  1452. to get distracted

  1453. by feeling guilty,

  1454. to get distracted

  1455. by failure,

  1456. to maybe push

  1457. this message away

  1458. because it's not

  1459. comfortable

  1460. but God,

  1461. but God,

  1462. help guilt

  1463. not to be the

  1464. destination

  1465. for us.

  1466. If there is guilt,

1467. help us to give it

  1468. to you.

  1469. Help us to remember

  1470. that you love us

1471. in spite of who we are.

1472. That one of the gifts

  1473. that you give us

1474. is to take our guilt

  1475. on yourself,

  1476. to take our shame

  1477. away,

  1478. to release us.

  1479. God,

  1480. thank you for your

  1481. patience with us

  1482. as we stumble

  1483. and as we keep

  1484. trying to grow

  1485. into this life

  1486. that you have

  1487. designed for us.

  1488. God,

  1489. right now

  1490. there are so many

  1491. people in this world

  1492. that you cherish,

  1493. that live with

  1494. less than what

  1495. they need.

  1496. Please enable us

  1497. to be a blessing

  1498. for them.

  1499. Enable us

  1500. to be bringers

  1501. of your justice,

  1502. to proclaim

  1503. the hope

  1504. of Jesus,

  1505. to use what

  1506. you have entrusted

  1507. to us so that

  1508. you might get glory,

  1509. so that people

  1510. might recognize

  1511. that you are

  1512. a God who cares.

  1513. You are a God

  1514. who provides.

  1515. Father,

  1516. thank you for

  1517. placing us

  1518. here in this church

  1519. at this time

  1520. with these resources.

  1521. Please so shape

  1522. our hearts

  1523. that we might

  1524. be faithful

  1525. with what you

  1526. have entrusted

  1527. to us.

  1528. Amen.
