  1. Well, I'm wondering how many of you have made New Year's resolutions.

  2. Dare I ask for you to put your hand up ever so slowly

  3. if you think that's a good thing to do.

  4. Because, frankly, I never do it.

  5. I don't do it because I know that it only is going to take an hour or two

  6. and I've actually messed up my New Year's resolution.

  7. But if you are a devotee of John Piper,

  8. John Piper would say we need to be making new resolutions every day.

  9. Every day we are to be turning our eyes towards Jesus.

  10. So I need to take a little lesson from that.

  11. Now, considering it's the beginning of a new year,

  12. I thought it would be good to talk about change

  13. because this is our moment to actually step into a new year

  14. and to be fresh and to go with vigour into what it is

  15. that the Lord actually would wish for us to be doing.

  16. So I want to ask you,

  17. if you were to change something of yourself,

  18. what is it that you would be wanting to start with?

  19. Lots of us would start with things like,

  20. we want to be skinnier,

  21. we want to be taller,

  22. shorter,

  23. better looking,

  24. or would you change your eyes,

  25. your hair,

  26. your teeth,

  27. your legs,

  28. your bulges,

  29. maybe just quietly?

  30. If you were to wave a magic wand

  31. and change any part of your appearance,

  32. would it be a light touch-up

  33. or would it be like one of those massive extreme makeovers

  34. that you see on television,

  35. which I personally actually really love,

  36. where you can't even recognise the person

  37. who's had the extreme makeover

  38. from the person who started?

  39. I just think that is amazing.

  40. Well, I think we all go through periods

  41. where we desperately want to change something,

  42. something about ourselves.

  43. Teenagers live in a state of wanting,

  44. living in a state of constant fear

  45. that they don't look good enough,

  46. that they,

  47. so they tinker and experiment with fads,

  48. with fashion,

  49. with this T-shirt,

  50. that hat,

  51. or whatever the latest artist might be wearing.

  52. But when we grow older,

  53. we get smarter.

  54. Or do we?

  55. We spend hours trying to find just the right dress

  56. or the right shirt

  57. or the right pair of pants

  58. that will fit into whatever the crowd is

  59. that we're trying to impress.

  60. And some diet obsessively

  61. and work out,

  62. which is good for our health,

  63. but it can be a losing battle really,

  64. can't it?

  65. Because we might lose weight

  66. and finally look good

  67. and then slowly it all sort of starts

  68. to creep back on again

  69. and we might reach a stage in our life

  70. where we think it's just much better

  71. to cover it up

  72. and not even bother anymore.

  73. Or maybe we just stop caring

  74. about ourselves altogether.

  75. But people change slowly.

  76. If they change at all.

  77. But as hard as it is to change on the outside,

  78. it seems infinitely harder

  79. to change on the inside.

  80. Think about all the struggles

  81. that you might have in your life.

  82. What would you change about yourself

  83. on the inside if you could?

  84. Would it be an impatient spirit,

  85. a critical tongue,

  86. envy of those around you,

  87. a spirit of discontentment,

  88. lingering resentment,

  89. lust you can't conquer,

  90. financial mismanagement,

  91. a guilty conscience,

  92. an inability to work with others,

  93. overbearing stubbornness,

  94. a judgmental spirit,

  95. a profound discouragement,

  96. an inability to appreciate life,

  97. an ungrateful spirit,

  98. a disorganised life,

  99. an inability to say no,

  100. a mean streak that you can't seem

  101. to get rid of?

  102. The list is unending.

  103. We would all want to change something.

  104. But we don't know how to do it.

  105. And we don't know where to begin.

  106. And dare I say,

  107. many of us have areas in our life

  108. that need change

  109. and we are so blinded

  110. by the fact that we need to change that

  111. that we don't even see it.

  112. That's called deception.

  113. We all dream of being someone different at times.

  114. A better person.

  115. Advertisers know this

  116. and so that is why your email box,

  117. your inbox is always crammed filled

  118. with advertising to tell you

  119. that you can lose weight,

  120. you can make money,

  121. you can learn a new language.

  122. I constantly receive,

  123. and I'm not too sure

  124. if the computer actually knows this,

  125. but I constantly receive

  126. unwanted emails about this herb

  127. that you can take in a pill form

  128. from Africa

  129. where you don't have to exercise,

  130. you don't have to worry

  131. about what food you eat

  132. and you lose weight.

  133. I mean, how fantastic is that?

  134. The problem is,

  135. I think the only thing that you lose

  136. is lots of dollars

  137. and maybe not the weight.

  138. So, you know,

  139. sort of unfortunately,

  140. that's not something

  141. that I want to take up.

  142. Change is hard.

  143. Go to any bookstore

  144. and you'll see an entire wall

  145. of self-help books.

  146. Helping people to change

  147. is big business nowadays.

  148. But when we get up in the morning

  149. and we look in the mirror,

  150. it is still the same person

  151. that we see from yesterday.

  152. That's why we sometimes want to move.

  153. We change jobs,

  154. we buy a new car,

  155. we start a new career,

  156. we have a new boyfriend,

  157. we have a new girlfriend,

  158. we have a new outfit,

  159. we go and change work.

  160. It's not as easy as those things.

  161. Those things aren't wrong in themselves,

  162. but sometimes we need to make outward changes.

  163. But it's not the outward stuff

  164. that trips us up.

  165. It's the stuff that's on the inside.

  166. Well, the great news is

  167. that there is an answer

  168. and most of you here in this building

  169. would actually know

  170. that the answer

  171. is going to be the Sunday school answer.

  172. It is Jesus.

  173. We all know that.

  174. Do we?

  175. Yes, of course we do.

  176. We all know that it's Jesus,

  177. is the answer.

  178. So why is it that we have so much trouble?

  179. What we learn with our heads

  180. needs to travel 30 centimetres

  181. in my old schooling, one foot,

  182. but 30 centimetres to reach our heart.

  183. And without that journey to our heart,

  184. whatever we know about Jesus,

  185. we'll actually be missing the point.

  186. So the change,

  187. the lasting change that we want

  188. is going to come

  189. by our hearts being transformed.

  190. What does it mean to follow Jesus then

  191. with our hearts?

  192. In our reading in Matthew 4,

  193. we see Jesus

  194. walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee

  195. and he calls Peter and Andrew

  196. and also James and John

  197. to follow him.

  198. Two sets of brothers

  199. who are at work

  200. doing what they do daily,

  201. earning a living.

  202. Now these guys

  203. have already met Jesus

  204. either days or weeks

  205. or a couple of months beforehand.

  206. Not sure of how long it is,

  207. but we see their first meeting with Jesus

  208. in John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  209. from verse 35.

  210. Let me read it for you.

  211. The next day,

  212. John was there again

  213. with two of his disciples.

  214. When he saw Jesus passing by,

  215. he said,

  216. look,

  217. the Lamb of God.

  218. When the two disciples

  219. heard him say this,

  220. they followed Jesus.

  221. Turning around,

  222. Jesus saw them following

  223. and asked,

  224. what do you want?

  225. They said,

  226. Rabbi,

  227. which means teacher.

  228. Where are you staying?

  229. Come,

  230. he replied,

  231. and you will see.

  232. So they went and saw

  233. where he was staying

  234. and they spent the day with him.

  235. It was about four in the afternoon.

  236. Andrew,

  237. Simon Peter's brother,

  238. was one of the two

  239. who heard what John had said

  240. and who had followed Jesus.

  241. The first thing Andrew did

  242. was to find his brother Simon

  243. and tell him,

  244. we have found the Messiah,

  245. that is the Christ.

  246. And he brought him to Jesus.

  247. Jesus looked at him

  248. and said,

  249. you are Simon,

  250. son of John,

  251. you will be called Cephas,

  252. which now means,

  253. translated,

  254. Peter.

  255. It seems that these new followers

  256. of Jesus

  257. had hung out with Jesus

  258. for a time

  259. and then had time

  260. to reflect on who Jesus was.

  261. And so when he's called to them

  262. to drop everything

  263. and to follow him,

  264. they were ready

  265. to do so immediately.

  266. That is,

  267. they left their work,

  268. they left their income

  269. and their security,

  270. they left their family,

  271. their focus

  272. was on Jesus

  273. and Jesus alone.

  274. They weren't concerned

  275. about what others

  276. might have thought.

  277. Obedience to Jesus

  278. meant what was important

  279. in life yesterday,

  280. that is work,

  281. income,

  282. now is totally secondary today.

  283. Jesus is now

  284. their focus

  285. and their priority

  286. in life.

  287. They were believers first,

  288. but now

  289. they are obedient followers.

  290. Two very,

  291. very different things.

  292. their world

  293. is about to change,

  294. but will it change quickly?

  295. No.

  296. Will it change with ease?

  297. No.

  298. Will there be lessons

  299. to learn?

  300. Yes,

  301. definitely.

  302. And will there be rejoicing?

  303. Yes,

  304. definitely.

  305. It is the same for us

  306. when we obediently

  307. follow Jesus.

  308. Is Jesus

  309. your main focus

  310. in life?

  311. Are your eyes

  312. fixed on him

  313. over and above

  314. your family,

  315. your work,

  316. your free time,

  317. your sport,

  318. your hobby?

  319. This is a challenge

  320. for me.

  321. My free time,

  322. if I have it,

  323. I love watching movies.

  324. Love it.

  325. But I can watch a movie

  326. quite easily

  327. and be sitting there

  328. knowing full well

  329. that I have not

  330. gone and read my Bible,

  331. I have not allowed

  332. Jesus to input

  333. into my life

  334. by reading

  335. his word,

  336. I haven't actually

  337. had time

  338. praying that day

  339. and committing

  340. my day to the Lord.

  341. I have my priorities

  342. very,

  343. very messed up

  344. at times

  345. and I am certain

  346. that

  347. many of you

  348. might have also.

  349. If we were to judge

  350. the adequacy

  351. of a bunch

  352. of fishermen

  353. by their appearance,

  354. what would we see?

  355. We would see

  356. sun-beaten bodies

  357. they'd be well-tanned,

  358. they'd be muscles,

  359. strong men physically,

  360. not sure

  361. how strong

  362. they would be

  363. emotionally,

  364. educated in fishing,

  365. not so educated

  366. academically,

  367. hard-working.

  368. Would we look

  369. and choose

  370. them

  371. for the A-team

  372. to be the disciples

  373. of Jesus

  374. the Messiah?

  375. I think not.

  376. and why not?

  377. Because we

  378. constantly

  379. fall into the trap

  380. of looking

  381. at a person

  382. and judging them

  383. by what is

  384. on the outside,

  385. their education,

  386. their financial

  387. security,

  388. what school

  389. or college

  390. they went to,

  391. what uni,

  392. how they look,

  393. what they wear

  394. and we do

  395. this same thing

  396. without knowing

  397. what is on the inside

  398. and without

  399. realising

  400. someone's potential.

  401. And we make

  402. the same

  403. foolish mistake

  404. and foolish

  405. judgement

  406. of ourselves

  407. and we

  408. miss

  409. the need

  410. and the potential

  411. to change

  412. the inside.

  413. We are in a trap

  414. that we

  415. cannot fix.

  416. Consider what happens

  417. when a caterpillar

  418. enters a cocoon

  419. only to emerge

  420. later

  421. as a beautiful

  422. butterfly.

  423. The caterpillar

  424. doesn't change

  425. its basic nature.

  426. Metamorphosis

  427. reveals what

  428. was always

  429. there

  430. in the genes

  431. of the caterpillar.

  432. Caterpillars

  433. can't fly

  434. but they were

  435. born

  436. to fly.

  437. when the caterpillar

  438. has been changed

  439. into a butterfly

  440. it becomes

  441. what God

  442. always

  443. intended

  444. that caterpillar

  445. to be.

  446. And we cannot

  447. see

  448. what God's

  449. intentions

  450. for us

  451. are either

  452. because

  453. it happens

  454. from the inside.

  455. These great

  456. men

  457. who Jesus

  458. called to

  459. follow him

  460. also had

  461. need of

  462. change

  463. on the inside

  464. but the

  465. change

  466. was going

  467. to be

  468. painful

  469. at times

  470. at least

  471. and dare I

  472. say

  473. downright

  474. embarrassing.

  475. We read

  476. in Matthew

  477. 26

  478. where Jesus

  479. predicts

  480. his death

  481. and also

  482. that Peter

  483. was going

  484. to deny

  485. him

  486. not once

  487. but three

  488. times.

  489. Of course

  490. Peter didn't

  491. believe this.

  492. of course

  493. he would

  494. have been

  495. offended

  496. that Jesus

  497. would think

  498. such a

  499. thing.

  500. I mean

  501. how often

  502. have you

  503. been offended

  504. when somebody

  505. speaks

  506. something about

  507. you that

  508. you embarrassingly

  509. find out

  510. was correct

  511. in the end?

  512. This

  513. happens

  514. to me

  515. more times

  516. than I'd

  517. like to

  518. count

  519. or that

  520. I'd like

  521. to share

  522. even maybe.

  523. my heart

  524. is clearly

  525. not pure

  526. and not

  527. perfect

  528. and dare

  529. I say

  530. nor is

  531. yours.

  532. Look at

  533. Peter's

  534. confident

  535. answer.

  536. He declares

  537. even if

  538. I die

  539. with you

  540. I will

  541. never

  542. disown

  543. you.

  544. And then

  545. it doesn't

  546. take very

  547. long for

  548. Peter's

  549. heart to

  550. be shown

  551. when he

  552. has the

  553. encounter

  554. with the

  555. servant

  556. girl

  557. who

  558. confidently

  559. states

  560. that

  561. Peter

  562. was also

  563. with

  564. Jesus.

  565. And what

  566. does

  567. Peter

  568. do?

  569. Remembering

  570. this is

  571. the Peter

  572. who loves

  573. Jesus

  574. declared

  575. he will

  576. never

  577. fall

  578. away

  579. and

  580. deny

  581. Jesus.

  582. Peter

  583. lies

  584. and he

  585. runs

  586. away.

  587. Isn't

  588. it bizarre

  589. that we

  590. all believe

  591. that if

  592. I just

  593. move

  594. into a

  595. different

  596. space

  597. be it

  598. changing

  599. work,

  600. changing

  601. church,

  602. changing

  603. friends,

  604. that the

  605. problem

  606. won't

  607. follow

  608. us.

  609. But it

  610. does.

  611. If the

  612. problem is

  613. never

  614. resolved

  615. it's

  616. always

  617. going to

  618. stick with

  619. you like

  620. glue.

  621. Another

  622. person

  623. confidently

  624. says that

  625. Peter was

  626. with Jesus

  627. and Peter

  628. denies it

  629. and then

  630. a group

  631. of men

  632. challenge

  633. Peter

  634. and he

  635. denies

  636. that he

  637. knows

  638. Jesus

  639. the third

  640. time.

  641. Imagine

  642. Peter's

  643. shock

  644. when he

  645. heard

  646. that rooster

  647. crow.

  648. How

  649. devastating.

  650. How

  651. utterly

  652. terrible

  653. to see

  654. one's

  655. own

  656. heart

  657. for what

  658. it truly

  659. is.

  660. Peter

  661. wept

  662. bitterly.

  663. Friends,

  664. that too

  665. should be

  666. our response

  667. when we

  668. truly see

  669. the reality

  670. of our

  671. hearts.

  672. How often

  673. or have

  674. you ever

  675. been so

  676. struck

  677. by the

  678. darkness

  679. of your

  680. heart

  681. that you

  682. have

  683. wept

  684. bitterly.

  685. Maybe

  686. for us

  687. to move

  688. into

  689. 2016

  690. we

  691. first

  692. all

  693. need

  694. to

  695. shed

  696. heartfelt

  697. tears

  698. of the

  699. darkness

  700. of our

  701. own

  702. hearts

  703. and receive

  704. the love

  705. and the

  706. grace

  707. and the

  708. forgiveness

  709. that only

  710. Jesus

  711. can actually

  712. bring.

  713. Jesus

  714. called Peter

  715. to follow

  716. him

  717. and it

  718. was

  719. Jesus

  720. who saw

  721. potential

  722. within

  723. Peter

  724. even

  725. though

  726. there was

  727. much to

  728. learn

  729. and much

  730. change

  731. to occur

  732. and Jesus

  733. has called

  734. us to

  735. himself.

  736. He has

  737. called us

  738. to follow

  739. him.

  740. He has

  741. called us

  742. to obey

  743. him

  744. and we

  745. too

  746. have

  747. much

  748. to

  749. learn

  750. and

  751. much

  752. change

  753. to

  754. happen

  755. within

  756. us

  757. and we

  758. wonder

  759. at the

  760. beginning

  761. of another

  762. year

  763. can I

  764. change

  765. is there

  766. potential?

  767. In the

  768. year

  769. 1464

  770. a sculptor

  771. named

  772. Agostino

  773. di

  774. Duccio

  775. Apology

  776. if I've

  777. said that

  778. incorrectly

  779. began

  780. working on

  781. a huge

  782. piece

  783. of

  784. floored

  785. marble

  786. intending

  787. to produce

  788. a magnificent

  789. sculpture

  790. of an

  791. Old

  792. Testament

  793. prophet

  794. for a

  795. cathedral

  796. in

  797. Florence

  798. Italy.

  799. He

  800. laboured

  801. for two

  802. years

  803. and then

  804. he stopped.

  805. In

  806. 1476

  807. Antonio

  808. Rossellino

  809. started to

  810. work on

  811. the same

  812. piece of

  813. marble

  814. and in

  815. time

  816. abandoned

  817. it also.

  818. In

  819. 1501

  820. a 26

  821. year old

  822. sculptor

  823. named

  824. Michelangelo

  825. was offered

  826. a considerable

  827. sum of

  828. money to

  829. produce

  830. something

  831. worthwhile

  832. from that

  833. enormous

  834. block of

  835. marble

  836. called

  837. the

  838. giant

  839. and as

  840. he began

  841. his work

  842. he saw

  843. a major

  844. floor

  845. near the

  846. bottom

  847. that had

  848. stymied

  849. other

  850. sculptors.

  851. He decided

  852. to turn that

  853. part of the

  854. stone into

  855. a broken

  856. tree,

  857. a broken

  858. tree stump

  859. that would

  860. support the

  861. right leg

  862. and the

  863. rest he

  864. worked on

  865. for four

  866. years

  867. until he

  868. had produced

  869. the

  870. incomparable

  871. David.

  872. Today the

  873. 17 foot

  874. tall statue

  875. stands on

  876. display at the

  877. Academia

  878. Gallery in

  879. Florence

  880. where people

  881. come from

  882. all around

  883. the world

  884. to view it.

  885. more than

  886. a masterpiece

  887. it is one

  888. of the

  889. greatest

  890. works of

  891. art

  892. ever

  893. produced.

  894. It has

  895. been said

  896. there is

  897. no statue

  898. more perfect.

  899. You might

  900. have a

  901. different view

  902. as I do

  903. but that's

  904. what they

  905. say.

  906. How did

  907. Michelangelo

  908. do it?

  909. Well here

  910. is the answer

  911. in his own

  912. words.

  913. He said

  914. in every

  915. block of

  916. marble I

  917. see a

  918. statue.

  919. As plain

  920. as though

  921. it stood

  922. before me

  923. shaped

  924. and perfect

  925. in attitude

  926. and action

  927. I have

  928. only to

  929. hew away

  930. the rough

  931. walls that

  932. imprison the

  933. lovely

  934. apparition

  935. to reveal

  936. it to

  937. other eyes

  938. as mine

  939. see it.

  940. Said in

  941. more colloquial

  942. terms

  943. I cut

  944. away

  945. everything

  946. that didn't

  947. look like

  948. David.

  949. All of

  950. us

  951. are works

  952. in progress.

  953. Now apply

  954. this to

  955. the spiritual

  956. life.

  957. We're not

  958. finished.

  959. We're not

  960. glorified.

  961. We're not

  962. perfected.

  963. We're not

  964. completed.

  965. We're all

  966. under

  967. construction.

  968. Whilst the

  969. chipping away

  970. of unwanted

  971. bits

  972. continues

  973. it's hard

  974. to imagine

  975. what the

  976. final result

  977. will be.

  978. God

  979. God

  980. never

  981. stops

  982. working

  983. on us

  984. because

  985. there is

  986. so much

  987. work

  988. that needs

  989. to be

  990. done.

  991. In

  992. Isaiah

    Isaiah 64:8

  993. 64

  994. verse 8

  995. it says

  996. O Lord

  997. you are

  998. our

  999. father

  1000. we are

  1001. the clay

  1002. you are

  1003. the potter

  1004. we are

  1005. all the

  1006. work of

  1007. your hand.

  1008. In my

  1009. mind's

  1010. eye

  1011. I picture

  1012. God as

  1013. a sculptor

  1014. working with

  1015. a rough

  1016. piece of

  1017. marble.

  1018. He's

  1019. working on

  1020. a big

  1021. chunk

  1022. named

  1023. Deb

  1024. Gould.

  1025. It's a

  1026. hard job

  1027. because the

  1028. chunk is

  1029. badly

  1030. marred,

  1031. it's

  1032. misshapen,

  1033. it's

  1034. discoloured

  1035. and cracked

  1036. in odd

  1037. places.

  1038. It's about

  1039. the worst

  1040. piece of

  1041. marble a

  1042. sculptor

  1043. could ever

  1044. find.

  1045. But God

  1046. is undeterred

  1047. and he

  1048. works patiently

  1049. at his

  1050. job

  1051. chipping away

  1052. the bad

  1053. parts,

  1054. chiseling,

  1055. in an

  1056. image

  1057. into the

  1058. hard stone,

  1059. stopping

  1060. occasionally

  1061. to polish

  1062. here and

  1063. there.

  1064. One day

  1065. he will

  1066. finish

  1067. one section

  1068. of the

  1069. statue.

  1070. The next

  1071. morning when

  1072. he returns

  1073. to the

  1074. studio,

  1075. that section

  1076. is messed

  1077. up.

  1078. I thought

  1079. I finished

  1080. that yesterday

  1081. he says,

  1082. who's been

  1083. messing with

  1084. my statue?

  1085. It turns

  1086. out that

  1087. I'm the

  1088. culprit.

  1089. I'm my

  1090. own

  1091. worst

  1092. enemy.

  1093. What I

  1094. thought would

  1095. improve

  1096. things has

  1097. only messed

  1098. them up

  1099. by my

  1100. actions,

  1101. by trying

  1102. to take

  1103. control,

  1104. by being

  1105. self-centred.

  1106. But God

  1107. is faithful.

  1108. He is

  1109. patiently

  1110. picks up

  1111. his chisel

  1112. and goes

  1113. back to

  1114. work.

  1115. He's

  1116. chipping

  1117. away

  1118. everything

  1119. that doesn't

  1120. look like

  1121. Jesus.

  1122. In my

  1123. case,

  1124. it's evident

  1125. that he's

  1126. got a

  1127. long way

  1128. to go,

  1129. but I'm

  1130. encouraged

  1131. by the

  1132. certain

  1133. knowledge

  1134. that he

  1135. will not

  1136. give up.

  1137. He will

  1138. not quit

  1139. halfway

  1140. through a

  1141. project.

  1142. What God

  1143. starts,

  1144. God

  1145. finishes.

  1146. After

  1147. Peter's

  1148. huge

  1149. debacle,

  1150. one would

  1151. think that

  1152. he would

  1153. be kicked

  1154. out of

  1155. the list

  1156. of close

  1157. friends and

  1158. disciples of

  1159. Jesus.

  1160. But if

  1161. you turn

  1162. with me to

  1163. John 21,

    John 21:15–18

  1164. verses 15

  1165. to 18,

  1166. we read

  1167. this.

  1168. When they

  1169. had finished

  1170. eating,

  1171. Jesus said

  1172. to Simon

  1173. Peter,

  1174. Simon,

  1175. son of

  1176. John,

  1177. do you

  1178. love me

  1179. more than

  1180. these?

  1181. Yes,

  1182. Lord,

  1183. he said,

  1184. you know

  1185. that I

  1186. love you.

  1187. Jesus

  1188. said,

  1189. feed my

  1190. lambs.

  1191. Again,

  1192. Jesus said,

  1193. Simon,

  1194. son of

  1195. John,

  1196. do you

  1197. love me?

  1198. He

  1199. answered,

  1200. yes,

  1201. Lord,

  1202. you know

  1203. that I

  1204. love you.

  1205. Jesus

  1206. said,

  1207. take my

  1208. sheep.

  1209. The third

  1210. time he

  1211. said to

  1212. him,

  1213. Simon,

  1214. son of

  1215. John,

  1216. do you

  1217. love me?

  1218. Peter was

  1219. hurt because

  1220. Jesus asked

  1221. him the

  1222. third time,

  1223. do you

  1224. love me?

  1225. He said,

  1226. Lord,

  1227. you know

  1228. all things,

  1229. you know

  1230. that I

  1231. love you.

  1232. And Jesus

  1233. said,

  1234. feed my

  1235. sheep.

  1236. Isn't that

  1237. beautiful?

  1238. that is

  1239. no accident

  1240. that Jesus

  1241. asked that

  1242. question three

  1243. times.

  1244. Three times

  1245. Peter disowned

  1246. Jesus and

  1247. three times

  1248. Jesus wanted

  1249. to show

  1250. Peter that

  1251. he is still

  1252. Jesus'

  1253. man.

  1254. Jesus knew

  1255. the change

  1256. in Peter's

  1257. heart and

  1258. he was

  1259. reinstated as

  1260. it was to

  1261. the role that

  1262. Jesus had

  1263. always planned

  1264. for him.

  1265. Peter had

  1266. the role of

  1267. feeding Jesus'

  1268. sheep to

  1269. lead his

  1270. people.

  1271. It was a

  1272. ministry beyond

  1273. anything a

  1274. simple fisherman

  1275. would ever

  1276. have dreamed.

  1277. We see the

  1278. transformation of

  1279. Peter, the

  1280. change that was

  1281. orchestrated by

  1282. Jesus when we

  1283. read Peter's

  1284. address to the

  1285. crowds in Acts

  1286. 2.

  1287. The Holy

  1288. Spirit comes

  1289. and fills all

  1290. the followers

  1291. of Jesus and

  1292. miraculously they

  1293. speak in

  1294. different tongues

  1295. with eloquence,

  1296. with power,

  1297. with authority.

  1298. This is a

  1299. change that

  1300. cannot be

  1301. achieved by

  1302. human effort

  1303. or by positive

  1304. thinking or by

  1305. any self-help

  1306. book.

  1307. This is a

  1308. change that

  1309. Jesus makes

  1310. for those who

  1311. follow and

  1312. obey him.

  1313. Remember right

  1314. at the

  1315. beginning we

  1316. saw Peter

  1317. and the

  1318. others leave

  1319. everything to

  1320. follow Jesus.

  1321. Being a

  1322. disciple of

  1323. Jesus is

  1324. dependent upon

  1325. us being

  1326. 100% devoted

  1327. and in love

  1328. with Jesus

  1329. above all

  1330. other

  1331. distractions.

  1332. Jesus needs

  1333. to be our

  1334. priority for

  1335. change to

  1336. occur.

  1337. Do you want

  1338. change?

  1339. change?

  1340. Do you want

  1341. change on the

  1342. inside that

  1343. will last?

  1344. Then we need

  1345. to make

  1346. 2016 a

  1347. year of

  1348. being devoted

  1349. to the

  1350. only one

  1351. who can

  1352. change us

  1353. into the

  1354. people that

  1355. he envisions

  1356. us to be.

  1357. Let me

  1358. encourage you

  1359. this week

  1360. to spend

  1361. time with

  1362. God and

  1363. ask him

  1364. what area

  1365. of your

  1366. life this

  1367. year needs

  1368. changing on

  1369. the inside.

  1370. It will not

  1371. happen overnight

  1372. but it will

  1373. happen if you

  1374. obey Jesus

  1375. and keep your

  1376. eyes on him

  1377. day by day

  1378. moment by

  1379. moment.

  1380. How wonderful

  1381. it will be

  1382. that when we

  1383. are in heaven

  1384. we will get

  1385. to see the

  1386. masterpiece

  1387. that the

  1388. Lord is

  1389. working on

  1390. right now

  1391. for each

  1392. other.

  1393. Remember we

  1394. are all

  1395. works in

  1396. progress and

  1397. we all have

  1398. potential if

  1399. we follow and

  1400. obey the

  1401. master.

  1402. We may

  1403. even choose

  1404. the same

  1405. engraving on

  1406. our headstones

  1407. when the day

  1408. comes that we

  1409. die that Ruth

  1410. Graham, the

  1411. wife of the

  1412. great evangelist

  1413. Billy Graham,

  1414. has on her

  1415. headstone.

  1416. and it

  1417. says,

  1418. end of

  1419. construction.

  1420. Thank you

  1421. for your

  1422. patience.
