  1. We put flags on our cars and drink copious amounts of alcohol

  2. and get arrested as we celebrate who we are as a nation.

  3. And part of the Australian Day celebrations,

  4. the two Aussie larrikins, Roy and HG, were part of the televised...

  5. I think they were at the Opera House or something like that.

  6. And at one point during the celebrations,

  7. Roy suggested that Australia Day should be renamed as Bludger's Day.

  8. And it should, in fact, not be a day of celebration,

  9. but it should be a whole week of just doing nothing, just being a bludger.

  10. And at which point did the crowd, when he said that,

  11. just erupted with cheers and applause.

  12. They were obviously thinking it's a great idea.

  13. And then he suggested at that point that, well, you know,

  14. the fact is no one wants to work.

  15. Certainly no one wants to go back to work tomorrow after a day like today.

  16. And the crowd cheered even more at that point.

  17. They tapped, in that moment, they tapped into something of the Australian psyche.

  18. The most popular Australian song of all time is Friday On My Mind,

  19. which was released in 1966.

  20. It's been popular since 1966 amongst Australians, released by the Easy Beats.

  21. It's a song that catches something of our Australian culture.

  22. On Friday...

  23. Sorry, on Monday, I've got Friday On My Mind.

  24. The day I start work, I'm looking forward to the day when I stop work.

  25. I think about the day when I'm stopping work.

  26. You know, we are known as the land of the long weekend and of strikes and of sickies and false compo claims.

  27. And you look at television and newspapers and billboards,

  28. they sell the stage of life that we call retirement as the ultimate freedom.

  29. That is, in our culture, we aspire to retire.

  30. That's what we aspire to.

  31. It's the ultimate freedom.

  32. You work in order to accumulate so that you don't have to work.

  33. A number of years ago, there was a survey in the United Kingdom

  34. which asks why the Australian show Home and Away was so popular in the UK.

  35. And not surprisingly, it wasn't the acting.

  36. Or the plot.

  37. Three things were mentioned as the top reasons why British people,

  38. millions of British people, tuned into Home and Away every day.

  39. Number one, the sun's always shining.

  40. Popular in England.

  41. Number two, the beach is always inviting.

  42. And number three, no one ever appears to be working.

  43. You could say that the dominant mentality in our culture

  44. is that we work in order to live.

  45. That is, work is a means to an end.

  46. We work in order to holiday.

  47. We work in order to have the money for leisure.

  48. We work in the...

  49. And the series that we're launching into now,

  50. over the next number of weeks,

  51. is about putting some purpose back into what we do

  52. when we're not gathered in this place.

  53. It's about lining what we do Monday to Saturday

  54. with what we're doing here right now on Sunday.

  55. And I think this is so essential for us

  56. because we are now working harder and harder,

  57. faster and faster for what is seemingly more and more meaningless.

  58. And if we could truly believe that what we do

  59. for most of our waking hours

  60. is actually part of God's good and eternal purposes,

  61. I think it would be a tonic more invigorating than a couple of these.

  62. Or a...

  63. No, I agree, Sam.

  64. Or a triple shot espresso.

  65. Or whatever it is that you use for your tonic.

  66. We may even result in this, I think,

  67. waking up on Monday morning

  68. and instead of thinking of Friday,

  69. might actually conclude,

  70. thank God it's Monday,

  71. ready for another week of serving him.

  72. And so my task tonight is to connect

  73. what we do with the rest of our weeks,

  74. what I'm calling through this series,

  75. and you've seen up there on the screen,

  76. your front line with God's purposes.

  77. That is, I want to give us a different view of our working life

  78. to the standard view which is in our culture.

  79. And the rest of this series will be unpacked,

  80. beyond this one,

  81. be unpacked in how we might see God honoured

  82. in the rest of our week outside of this building.

  83. Now, I should first of all explain what I mean by work.

  84. Otherwise, the retired, the unemployed,

  85. the art students, the parents,

  86. the care...

  87. I will rebuke myself later for that comment.

  88. I want you to know that.

  89. The children amongst us,

  90. we'll just switch off for the next few weeks.

  91. The biblical idea of work has its meaning in the word vocation.

  92. One of the major differences

  93. between what you might call a job or a vocation

  94. is that someone calls you into a vocation.

  95. The word vocation simply means calling.

  96. And so I'm thinking of vocation

  97. when I talk about work.

  98. And understood in the correct way,

  99. Christian vocation is centred on the sovereign God

  100. who calls us to embrace the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ

  101. and to follow him in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  102. And so our first and primary calling is to Christ.

  103. That is, we are called to someone rather than something

  104. or somewhere.

  105. But under our calling to Christ,

  106. we all have secondary callings in life.

  107. And it's where we live out our primary calling to Christ,

  108. where we live it out with faithfulness and fruitfulness

  109. to the God who's called us.

  110. And even though it's a secondary calling,

  111. it must not be minimized or devalued.

  112. What makes the secondary calling significant

  113. is the God is the one who calls us to it

  114. in a life of service and contribution to him and to society.

  115. And so first and foremost, work, vocation,

  116. is not about economic exchange or financial remuneration

  117. or personal significance or career paths

  118. or the thing that I must do in order to have holidays

  119. and long service leave and everything else.

  120. Work is about God honoring creativity

  121. and contribution to others.

  122. Our work or vocation, our calling, our position in life,

  123. whatever it is, whether we are paid for it

  124. or whether we are not,

  125. is our specific human contribution

  126. to God's ongoing creation

  127. and to the common good of society.

  128. And that's what this series is all about

  129. and how we are to be faithful and fruitful

  130. and God honoring in your vocation,

  131. whether you are retired,

  132. whether you're a student,

  133. whether you're a child,

  134. whether you're unemployed,

  135. whether you're a banker,

  136. whether you're an electrician,

  137. whatever it is that you are,

  138. whatever position you are in life.

  139. What that means is

  140. that there's not a person in this room who doesn't work.

  141. That's what I mean.

  142. And I'll be referring to that work or that vocation

  143. as your front line throughout this series.

  144. It's the place where you spend the majority of your time

  145. outside of this building.

  146. It is where you're in contact with God's world,

  147. society and the people who need Jesus.

  148. That's your front line.

  149. So let's jump into the Bible.

  150. Genesis chapter one.

  151. Just read out to us a moment ago.

  152. Grab a Bible.

  153. It would be fantastic if you had that in front of you.

  154. It's noteworthy,

  155. as Sam has just read out for us,

  156. that the Bible begins talking about work

  157. as soon as it begins talking about anything.

  158. That is how important and basic it is.

  159. Genesis describes God's creation of the world as work.

  160. And then it shows us human beings working in paradise.

  161. It is remarkable that at the end of Genesis one,

  162. God not only works,

  163. but that he finds delight in his work.

  164. Verse 31,

  165. God saw all that he made

  166. and it was very good.

  167. God finds what he has worked for,

  168. what he has done,

  169. as beautiful.

  170. Like all and good, satisfying work,

  171. the worker sees themselves in it.

  172. Genesis two goes on to show

  173. that God works not only to create,

  174. but also to care for his creation.

  175. God creates human beings

  176. and then he works for them as their provider.

  177. He forms the man in verse seven,

  178. plants a garden for him

  179. and he waters it in verses six and eight

  180. and fashions a wife for him,

  181. a helper for him in verses 21 and 22.

  182. And the rest of the Bible tells us

  183. that God continues to work as provider.

  184. He is caring for his world,

  185. watering it and cultivating the ground in Psalm 104.

  186. He gives food to all he has made,

  187. giving help to all who suffer

  188. and caring for the needs of every living thing

  189. in Psalm 145.

  190. Not only does God work, however,

  191. but that he commissions his people,

  192. his workers to carry on his work.

  193. So in Genesis chapter one, verse 28,

  194. he tells human beings to fill the earth

  195. and subdue it to rule over it.

  196. The word subdue there indicates

  197. that though all God had made was good,

  198. there was still a great degree of it

  199. which was undeveloped.

  200. God left creation with a deep,

  201. untapped potential, if you like,

  202. for cultivation, development,

  203. for society that people were to unlock

  204. through their work of exercising rule

  205. over the created order

  206. under God as his image bearers.

  207. And then you see in Genesis chapter two,

  208. verse 15, that he puts Adam and Eve

  209. in the garden to work it and keep it.

  210. And so while God works for us as our provider,

  211. we also work for him doing his work.

  212. He works through us.

  213. So the book of Genesis leaves us

  214. with a striking truth.

  215. Work was part of paradise.

  216. God's good plan and creation

  217. always included human beings

  218. living in a constant cycle of work,

  219. rest, work, rest, work, rest.

  220. It was part of God's perfect design

  221. for human life.

  222. We were made in God's image

  223. and part of his glory and happiness

  224. is that he works.

  225. And the Lord Jesus Christ,

  226. who is the perfect image of God,

  227. says this of himself in John 5,

  228. my father is always at his work

  229. to this very day

  230. and I too am working.

  231. So the Lord Jesus did the work

  232. his father assigned him to do

  233. and he calls us as his disciples

  234. and ourselves as image bearers of God

  235. into God's work in his world.

  236. It's startling to think

  237. that God made work part of paradise.

  238. Work wasn't introduced

  239. as part of the brokenness

  240. and curse of sin.

  241. Work is part of the blessedness

  242. of the Garden of Eden.

  243. And so work is much

  244. a basic human need

  245. as food and beauty

  246. and rest and friendship

  247. and prayer and sexuality.

  248. It is not simply medicine.

  249. It is in fact food for the soul.

  250. According to the Bible,

  251. we don't merely need the money

  252. from work to survive,

  253. we need the work itself

  254. to survive and thrive.

  255. Rather than working to live,

  256. we live to work.

  257. That is,

  258. I have four weeks annual leave

  259. in order to be refreshed

  260. to work the rest of the year.

  261. That's the purpose of my leave.

  262. I don't work in order

  263. to accumulate annual leave.

  264. I get annual leave

  265. in order to work.

  266. That's a complete flip

  267. of the culture in which we exist.

  268. But that's a biblical view.

  269. So rather than working to live,

  270. we live to work.

  271. And I think the Apostle Paul

  272. makes that point

  273. in 2 Thessalonians 3,

    2 Thessalonians 3:10

  274. verse 10,

  275. where he says,

  276. if anyone is not willing to work,

  277. let him not eat.

  278. Now, Paul doesn't rebuke

  279. those there that cannot work

  280. for any reason,

  281. but he does say

  282. an unwillingness to work

  283. is no trivial matter.

  284. For anyone to refuse to work

  285. is a fundamental violation

  286. of God's design for humanity.

  287. But the Bible also keeps us

  288. from falling into the opposite mistake,

  289. and that is making work

  290. the only important human activity

  291. or the badge of honour.

  292. So when we say,

  293. you know,

  294. I work long hours

  295. and I work all the time

  296. and I haven't had a day off

  297. for weeks or something like that,

  298. that's sin.

  299. That's making an idol of your work.

  300. That's not part of God's good design.

  301. You see, work is not all there is to life.

  302. You will not have a meaningful life

  303. without work,

  304. but you cannot say

  305. that your work

  306. is the meaning of your life.

  307. If you make any work

  308. the purpose of your life,

  309. including church work and ministry,

  310. you create an idol

  311. that rivals God.

  312. So first of all,

  313. it's a real tonic to know

  314. that it's not just

  315. your service in the church

  316. that matters to God.

  317. That's the first thing.

  318. Your vocation,

  319. your position in life

  320. matters to God.

  321. And as I mentioned before,

  322. I get that from 1 Corinthians 7,

  323. where God assigns people

  324. their position in life.

  325. Your front line

  326. is where God has put you

  327. to fulfil his purpose

  328. for his world.

  329. It's a further tonic

  330. to know that God

  331. is in fact still at work

  332. in his world himself.

  333. So in Colossians chapter 1,

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  334. which Sam read out to us,

  335. Paul is allowing

  336. the Colossian church

  337. to in on his prayer life.

  338. And his prayers

  339. are prayers of thanksgiving

  340. as he reflects on the fact

  341. that the gospel

  342. is bearing fruit

  343. all over the world.

  344. It is transforming situations

  345. in verse 6.

  346. And so when Paul moves

  347. to pray for the Colossians,

  348. what does he think

  349. their greatest need is?

  350. And bear this in mind

  351. as we enter into a week

  352. of prayer here at St. Paul's

  353. in terms of how to shape

  354. your prayer life in this week.

  355. What are your prayer priorities?

  356. What does he think

  357. the Colossians need

  358. more than anything else?

  359. What shapes his prayer for them?

  360. It is that they be filled

  361. with the knowledge

  362. of God's will.

  363. In verse 9,

  364. so that they will live lives

  365. that are worthy of the Lord

  366. and that they will bear fruit

  367. in every good work.

  368. Growing in the knowledge of God

  369. and strengthened to keep going

  370. in their lives of faith.

  371. That's what he desires

  372. for the Colossian church.

  373. He then moves in to talk about

  374. the significance of what Christ

  375. has done

  376. and then he just puts on display

  377. from verse 14

  378. at just a litany

  379. of amazing truths

  380. about Jesus Christ

  381. that are probably the most

  382. concentrated descriptions

  383. of the glories of Jesus

  384. in all of the New Testament.

  385. Have a look at it there.

  386. There's 15 of them

  387. in a few verses.

  388. Verse 14,

  389. in him we have redemption,

  390. the forgiveness of sins.

  391. Verse 15,

  392. he is the image

  393. of the invisible God.

  394. Verse 15 again,

  395. he is the firstborn

  396. of all creation.

  397. That is,

  398. he's the specially honoured

  399. firstborn son,

  400. the inheritor

  401. of the estate

  402. of all.

  403. That is,

  404. he's the inheritor

  405. of all creation.

  406. Verse 16,

  407. by him all things

  408. were created

  409. in heaven and earth,

  410. visible and invisible

  411. where thrones

  412. or dominions

  413. or rulers

  414. or authorities.

  415. Verse 16,

  416. again,

  417. all things

  418. were created

  419. through him.

  420. Verse 16,

  421. again,

  422. all things

  423. were created

  424. for him.

  425. Verse 17,

  426. he is before

  427. all things.

  428. Verse 17,

  429. again,

  430. in him all things

  431. hold together.

  432. Verse 18,

  433. he's the head

  434. of the body,

  435. the church.

  436. Verse 18,

  437. again,

  438. he's the beginning.

  439. Verse 18,

  440. again,

  441. he is the firstborn

  442. from the dead.

  443. Verse 18,

  444. again,

  445. he is the preeminence

  446. in everything.

  447. Verse 19,

  448. in him all the fullness

  449. of God

  450. is pleased to dwell.

  451. Verse 20,

  452. he reconciles

  453. all things himself,

  454. whether on earth

  455. or in heaven.

  456. Verse 20,

  457. again,

  458. he makes peace

  459. by the blood

  460. of his cross.

  461. It's an astounding

  462. list of the glories

  463. of Christ.

  464. And frankly,

  465. you know,

  466. what I should have done

  467. is,

  468. time permitting,

  469. just read each one

  470. and just sat there

  471. and savored it

  472. for a moment.

  473. You see,

  474. in order to live lives

  475. that are worthy

  476. of your calling

  477. and to labor

  478. to be fruitful

  479. in fulfilling

  480. God's purposes

  481. in this world,

  482. you need to have

  483. confidence

  484. in the God,

  485. what he is,

  486. in God,

  487. what he's done,

  488. in what he is doing

  489. and what he will do

  490. into the future.

  491. And that's what

  492. those verses do for you.

  493. You need to have

  494. a big vision

  495. that the whole

  496. of creation

  497. matters to God.

  498. if we are to live

  499. whole lives

  500. for the glory

  501. of God,

  502. we need to see

  503. that God's mission

  504. is about

  505. all things

  506. being reconciled,

  507. all things

  508. being reconciled,

  509. all things

  510. being transformed

  511. and not just

  512. some things.

  513. Jesus created

  514. all things

  515. in the beginning,

  516. he holds all things

  517. together as a rule

  518. of the universe

  519. and God will reconcile

  520. all things

  521. through Christ

  522. at the end of time.

  523. And my friend,

  524. let me just pause

  525. for a moment.

  526. If your heart

  527. wavers,

  528. you know,

  529. you leave this building

  530. and you're out there

  531. on a Monday morning

  532. at your front line,

  533. whatever it is

  534. that you're doing,

  535. you know,

  536. raising children

  537. or being a banker

  538. or whatever it is

  539. that you're doing,

  540. if your heart

  541. ever wavers

  542. or it grows cold

  543. as a disciple

  544. of the Lord Jesus

  545. out there

  546. in that world,

  547. then come back

  548. to these verses.

  549. Memorize

  550. this list

  551. of the glories

  552. of Christ

  553. and ask God

  554. to give you

  555. affections

  556. that correspond

  557. to the measure

  558. of the greatness

  559. of Christ.

  560. Paul teaches us here

  561. that Jesus Christ

  562. created all that is.

  563. They were created

  564. through him.

  565. He was with

  566. and in God

  567. and was God

  568. and as God

  569. created all things

  570. through him

  571. and all things

  572. were created

  573. for him.

  574. All that came

  575. into existence

  576. came for Christ.

  577. That is,

  578. everything exists

  579. to display

  580. the greatness

  581. of Christ

  582. to his created order.

  583. Nothing,

  584. let me just emphasize

  585. that,

  586. nothing

  587. in the universe

  588. exists

  589. for its own sake.

  590. Everything

  591. from the bottom

  592. of the oceans

  593. to the top

  594. of the highest mountains,

  595. from the smallest

  596. particle

  597. to the largest star,

  598. from the most

  599. boring school subject

  600. to the most

  601. fascinating science experiment,

  602. from the ugliest

  603. cockroach

  604. to the most

  605. beautiful human being,

  606. from the most

  607. glorious saint

  608. to the most

  609. wicked

  610. genocidal dictator,

  611. everything that exists

  612. exists

  613. to make

  614. the greatness

  615. of Christ

  616. more fully known

  617. to his world

  618. and that includes

  619. you

  620. and the work

  621. that you will do

  622. tomorrow morning.

  623. Is that a tonic

  624. to get you out of bed

  625. a little bit better

  626. than a coffee?

  627. I'm not saying

  628. abandon the coffee,

  629. I mean I'm not going

  630. to do that

  631. tomorrow morning,

  632. but a shot

  633. in the arm,

  634. there's a lot

  635. of undoing here

  636. because over the years

  637. our primary

  638. and second

  639. callings in life

  640. have been

  641. unhelpfully separated

  642. and a hierarchy

  643. have been put

  644. in place

  645. and I was

  646. disciplined,

  647. sorry,

  648. I was discipled

  649. in this kind

  650. of teaching.

  651. That is,

  652. I was discipled

  653. in the teaching

  654. the most important

  655. thing that you can

  656. do with your life

  657. is to live

  658. for Christ

  659. and therefore

  660. if that's true

  661. the most important

  662. thing that you can

  663. do with your life

  664. is to go

  665. into full-time

  666. ministry

  667. and if you're

  668. not in full-time

  669. ministry

  670. and not every

  671. Christian is,

  672. and you are

  673. a Christian

  674. then your vocation

  675. should be to

  676. support full-time

  677. ministry.

  678. Get a job

  679. and give money

  680. to the church

  681. and when you're

  682. not working

  683. at that

  684. sign up to a

  685. roster on church

  686. time and give

  687. your time to the

  688. church.

  689. The most

  690. influential thinker

  691. in Western

  692. Christianity

  693. in the 300s,

  694. that's a long

  695. time ago,

  696. was Augustine

  697. of Hippo.

  698. He distinguished

  699. between the two

  700. main aspects

  701. of life.

  702. He called it

  703. the active

  704. life and the

  705. contemplative

  706. life.

  707. The active

  708. life was all

  709. the ways that

  710. people serve

  711. one another.

  712. So for him

  713. it was farming

  714. and crafting

  715. and trading

  716. and raising

  717. families and

  718. stuff like that.

  719. The contemplative

  720. life was the

  721. Godward life,

  722. the Godward

  723. focused life in

  724. prayer and

  725. worship and

  726. spiritual disciplines

  727. and stuff like

  728. that.

  729. Now while for

  730. him both aspects

  731. were good,

  732. he suggested

  733. that the

  734. contemplative

  735. life was

  736. the most

  737. spiritual and

  738. God-pleasing

  739. in life.

  740. Now the

  741. separation of

  742. the physical

  743. and spiritual

  744. aspects of

  745. life were

  746. further distorted

  747. in the 11th

  748. century when

  749. clergy were

  750. mandated to

  751. celibacy and

  752. therefore separated

  753. from ordinary

  754. active life of

  755. family and

  756. business.

  757. They were put

  758. away in

  759. monasteries,

  760. put brown

  761. robes on them

  762. and walked

  763. around and

  764. hummed and

  765. stuff.

  766. Now the

  767. key development

  768. in understanding

  769. work happened

  770. ironically in

  771. the 6th century

  772. by a guy

  773. named Gregory

  774. the Great.

  775. Like I've

  776. said this

  777. morning, I

  778. don't know

  779. why he was

  780. great but

  781. we'll just

  782. call him

  783. Greg.

  784. Greg was

  785. a monk who

  786. valued the

  787. contemplative

  788. life above

  789. the active

  790. life but

  791. whose world

  792. was totally

  793. rocked when

  794. the Pope

  795. called him

  796. to Rome

  797. to head up

  798. administrative

  799. duties and

  800. he's like

  801. all of a

  802. sudden he's

  803. got to

  804. work.

  805. And his

  806. whole world

  807. was rocked

  808. and his

  809. personal

  810. journey helped

  811. him to see

  812. that the

  813. active life

  814. of service

  815. to others

  816. was not

  817. an unwelcomed

  818. or a

  819. spiritually

  820. damaging

  821. distraction

  822. from the

  823. contemplative

  824. life.

  825. So he

  826. connected

  827. every aspect

  828. of life

  829. into a

  830. unified

  831. whole,

  832. the

  833. contemplative

  834. life

  835. equipping

  836. us for

  837. active life

  838. service

  839. of others

  840. and the

  841. active

  842. life

  843. grounding

  844. us in

  845. acts of

  846. love to

  847. our

  848. neighbours

  849. which kept

  850. us from

  851. floating

  852. off into

  853. spiritual

  854. pride and

  855. you know

  856. irrelevancy.

  857. He connected

  858. work and

  859. particularly

  860. service of

  861. others and

  862. use of

  863. gifts and

  864. position in

  865. life with

  866. spiritual

  867. maturity.

  868. Primary

  869. and secondary

  870. calling are

  871. intimately

  872. connected.

  873. And so

  874. the impact

  875. of Greg's

  876. work was

  877. that in

  878. the Middle

  879. Ages

  880. Pope

  881. Benedict

  882. made

  883. manual

  884. labour

  885. the duty

  886. of every

  887. monk in

  888. a monastery.

  889. So they

  890. blamed Greg

  891. and they

  892. made mead

  893. whatever else

  894. they did

  895. scotch and

  896. stuff.

  897. Now

  898. let's be

  899. frank here

  900. old habits

  901. die hard.

  902. we are

  903. in danger

  904. and I've

  905. been there

  906. let me tell

  907. you of

  908. propagating

  909. this

  910. historical

  911. secular

  912. sacred

  913. divide.

  914. And part

  915. of what

  916. we're doing

  917. in this

  918. series is

  919. trying to

  920. break that

  921. down a

  922. little bit

  923. for us.

  924. It is

  925. easy to

  926. class,

  927. let's be

  928. frank about

  929. this,

  930. it is

  931. easy to

  932. class what

  933. we are

  934. doing now

  935. in corporate

  936. worship

  937. as worship

  938. but it's

  939. much more

  940. difficult for

  941. us to

  942. think about

  943. what we're

  944. going to

  945. do tomorrow

  946. as worship.

  947. And if

  948. you agree

  949. with that

  950. statement,

  951. yes it

  952. is more

  953. difficult,

  954. then it's

  955. quite possible

  956. that you

  957. have the

  958. secular

  959. sacred

  960. divide.

  961. You've

  962. been

  963. operating

  964. from that

  965. position.

  966. It's

  967. easy to

  968. see this

  969. as spiritual

  970. and what

  971. you're going

  972. to do

  973. tomorrow

  974. as

  975. unspiritual

  976. something

  977. that you

  978. must do

  979. in order

  980. to live.

  981. You see

  982. without a

  983. real sense

  984. of calling

  985. our motivation

  986. to get

  987. out of bed

  988. tomorrow

  989. morning and

  990. go to

  991. work will

  992. be little

  993. more than

  994. I owe,

  995. I owe,

  996. so off to

  997. work I

  998. go.

  999. You see

  1000. faith in the

  1001. Lord Jesus

  1002. helps us to

  1003. see the

  1004. dignity of

  1005. work.

  1006. Work has

  1007. dignity

  1008. because it

  1009. is something

  1010. that God

  1011. does and

  1012. it's something

  1013. that he

  1014. calls us

  1015. to in his

  1016. place as

  1017. his

  1018. representatives.

  1019. The plants

  1020. and the

  1021. animals were

  1022. simply called

  1023. to reproduce.

  1024. But people

  1025. are explicitly

  1026. given a job

  1027. in Genesis

  1028. 2.

  1029. They are

  1030. called to

  1031. subdue and

  1032. have dominion

  1033. or to

  1034. rule over

  1035. the created

  1036. order for

  1037. control,

  1038. order,

  1039. beauty,

  1040. creation of

  1041. beauty,

  1042. other things

  1043. like that.

  1044. So not

  1045. only does

  1046. work have

  1047. dignity but

  1048. all kinds

  1049. of work

  1050. have dignity.

  1051. unity.

  1052. This is

  1053. where the

  1054. great

  1055. reformer

  1056. Martin

  1057. Luther and

  1058. John Calvin

  1059. was the

  1060. same,

  1061. very helpful

  1062. at this

  1063. point.

  1064. For instance,

  1065. Luther noticed

  1066. there's a bunch

  1067. of places in

  1068. the Bible

  1069. where God

  1070. says that he

  1071. will feed

  1072. all of his

  1073. living creatures

  1074. and Luther

  1075. sees that as

  1076. a promise

  1077. that God

  1078. himself will

  1079. fulfill.

  1080. God does

  1081. that.

  1082. But he

  1083. says how

  1084. does he do

  1085. that?

  1086. How does

  1087. God fulfill

  1088. his promises?

  1089. He says he

  1090. feeds you

  1091. and I'm

  1092. going to

  1093. paraphrase him

  1094. and modernize

  1095. him a little

  1096. bit.

  1097. He feeds

  1098. you through

  1099. the farmers

  1100. who grow

  1101. the wheat,

  1102. the truck

  1103. driver who

  1104. delivers it

  1105. to the

  1106. silo,

  1107. the trader

  1108. who sells

  1109. it to the

  1110. baker,

  1111. the baker

  1112. who makes

  1113. the bread,

  1114. the supermarket

  1115. who sells

  1116. it to you

  1117. and he

  1118. says the

  1119. people who

  1120. do the

  1121. simplest of

  1122. work are

  1123. the fingers

  1124. of God

  1125. to bless

  1126. you.

  1127. When I

  1128. go to the

  1129. restaurant,

  1130. the waitress

  1131. who brings

  1132. me my

  1133. food,

  1134. the chef

  1135. who's

  1136. prepared in

  1137. the back,

  1138. the delivery

  1139. diver,

  1140. the wholesalers,

  1141. the workers

  1142. in the

  1143. food processing

  1144. factory,

  1145. the family

  1146. and everyone

  1147. else in

  1148. the economic

  1149. food chain

  1150. are used

  1151. by God

  1152. to give

  1153. me this

  1154. day my

  1155. daily bread.

  1156. It's God

  1157. at work

  1158. using people

  1159. in their

  1160. vocation

  1161. to serve

  1162. me and

  1163. others.

  1164. God is

  1165. loving me

  1166. through the

  1167. work of

  1168. other people.

  1169. All work

  1170. is God's

  1171. way of

  1172. caring for

  1173. his creation.

  1174. This is

  1175. important for

  1176. us to come

  1177. to terms

  1178. with.

  1179. There is

  1180. no,

  1181. no biblical

  1182. foundation

  1183. to elevate

  1184. the work

  1185. of doctors

  1186. over the

  1187. work of

  1188. plumbers.

  1189. None

  1190. whatsoever.

  1191. In fact,

  1192. the foundation

  1193. in that

  1194. is pagan

  1195. Greek

  1196. philosophy

  1197. where the

  1198. thinkers

  1199. were regarded

  1200. in higher

  1201. order

  1202. than the

  1203. doers.

  1204. Greek

  1205. philosophy

  1206. is not

  1207. biblical.

  1208. As I

  1209. mentioned,

  1210. 1 Corinthians

  1211. 7,

  1212. God calls

  1213. people to

  1214. different

  1215. positions and

  1216. roles in

  1217. life and

  1218. whatever the

  1219. position is,

  1220. it's

  1221. dignifying because

  1222. God is

  1223. the one

  1224. who does

  1225. the calling

  1226. and assigning.

  1227. And so

  1228. be careful

  1229. of participating

  1230. in the sneering

  1231. attitude our

  1232. culture has

  1233. towards people

  1234. who do

  1235. simple jobs.

  1236. Whenever

  1237. Luther talked

  1238. about vocation,

  1239. he deliberately

  1240. used the

  1241. simple and

  1242. the mundane

  1243. in order to

  1244. elevate the

  1245. significance of

  1246. it.

  1247. He referred to

  1248. the father

  1249. washing

  1250. nappies,

  1251. the maid

  1252. sweeping the

  1253. floor,

  1254. the brewer

  1255. making good

  1256. beer.

  1257. By doing

  1258. our appointed

  1259. work in

  1260. society,

  1261. we become

  1262. the means

  1263. or the

  1264. agents of

  1265. grace through

  1266. which God

  1267. serves others.

  1268. So

  1269. traditionally,

  1270. we have

  1271. used the

  1272. language of

  1273. Christian work

  1274. to refer

  1275. exclusively to

  1276. what I'm

  1277. doing now,

  1278. what I do

  1279. in my work,

  1280. ministry and

  1281. missionary work

  1282. and parachurch

  1283. callings.

  1284. this distorted

  1285. understanding

  1286. exposes an

  1287. inadequate grasp

  1288. of the

  1289. biblical

  1290. understanding

  1291. of vocation

  1292. and if

  1293. you're a

  1294. Christian,

  1295. you are

  1296. about to

  1297. embark on

  1298. a week of

  1299. Christian work

  1300. in the same

  1301. way that I'm

  1302. about to

  1303. embark on a

  1304. week of

  1305. Christian work

  1306. when you

  1307. leave this

  1308. building.

  1309. What will

  1310. that look

  1311. like for

  1312. you?

  1313. depending on

  1314. your theological

  1315. position and

  1316. your vocation,

  1317. you might

  1318. say the

  1319. way to

  1320. serve God

  1321. at work

  1322. is to

  1323. work with

  1324. a grateful,

  1325. joyful,

  1326. gospel-changed

  1327. heart through

  1328. all the ups

  1329. and downs.

  1330. Or the

  1331. way to

  1332. serve God

  1333. at work

  1334. is to

  1335. do whatever

  1336. gives you

  1337. the greatest

  1338. joy and

  1339. passion.

  1340. Or the

  1341. way to

  1342. serve God

  1343. at work

  1344. is to

  1345. make as

  1346. much money

  1347. as you

  1348. can so

  1349. you can

  1350. be as

  1351. generous

  1352. as you

  1353. can.

  1354. Or the

  1355. way to

  1356. serve God

  1357. at work

  1358. is to

  1359. further

  1360. social

  1361. justice

  1362. in the

  1363. world.

  1364. Or the

  1365. way to

  1366. serve God

  1367. at work

  1368. is to

  1369. be

  1370. personally

  1371. honest,

  1372. to evangelize

  1373. my colleagues

  1374. and set up

  1375. Bible studies.

  1376. Or the

  1377. way to

  1378. serve God

  1379. at work

  1380. is to

  1381. do

  1382. skillful,

  1383. excellent

  1384. work.

  1385. Or the

  1386. way to

  1387. serve God

  1388. at work

  1389. is to

  1390. create

  1391. beauty.

  1392. Or the

  1393. way to

  1394. serve God

  1395. at work

  1396. is to

  1397. work from

  1398. a Christian

  1399. motivation

  1400. to glorify

  1401. God,

  1402. seeking to

  1403. engage and

  1404. influence the

  1405. culture to

  1406. that end.

  1407. It will

  1408. depend on

  1409. your theological

  1410. position,

  1411. depend on

  1412. the work

  1413. you do.

  1414. But I

  1415. would say

  1416. that Christian

  1417. work is

  1418. generally

  1419. speaking a

  1420. mixture of

  1421. all of

  1422. those things.

  1423. Not every

  1424. vocation is

  1425. going to do

  1426. all of those

  1427. things.

  1428. I do

  1429. struggle to

  1430. see how

  1431. accountants

  1432. create beauty,

  1433. frankly.

  1434. If you're a

  1435. Christian

  1436. airline pilot,

  1437. it doesn't

  1438. mean that

  1439. you use

  1440. the

  1441. plane's

  1442. intercom

  1443. to share

  1444. the gospel

  1445. with your

  1446. passengers from

  1447. point A to

  1448. point B.

  1449. At the

  1450. very least,

  1451. it means

  1452. land the

  1453. plane and

  1454. do it

  1455. well,

  1456. smoothly.

  1457. Doing your

  1458. work well

  1459. honors God.

  1460. For

  1461. mums,

  1462. you know,

  1463. Billy Graham's

  1464. wife had a

  1465. plaque above

  1466. her kitchen

  1467. sink which

  1468. read,

  1469. divine services

  1470. conducted here

  1471. three times a

  1472. day.

  1473. She understood

  1474. her vocation

  1475. and that it

  1476. honored God.

  1477. It was

  1478. worship.

  1479. Lining your

  1480. kid's school

  1481. uniform,

  1482. changing a

  1483. nappy that

  1484. overfloweth,

  1485. or, you

  1486. know,

  1487. mowing your

  1488. lawn are not

  1489. simply jobs

  1490. when done

  1491. for God.

  1492. God is

  1493. working through

  1494. you to create

  1495. order and care

  1496. for his

  1497. creation and

  1498. creatures,

  1499. to redeem,

  1500. to advance

  1501. his purposes.

  1502. Is this not

  1503. what the

  1504. Bible teaches

  1505. us in

  1506. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1507. chapter 3?

  1508. Have this

  1509. verse ringing

  1510. in your mind

  1511. tomorrow morning,

  1512. maybe go home

  1513. and print it

  1514. out and stick

  1515. it in your

  1516. pocket, put

  1517. it in your

  1518. lunchbox or

  1519. something like

  1520. that, whatever

  1521. it is that

  1522. you do.

  1523. Whatever you

  1524. do, work

  1525. at it with

  1526. all of your

  1527. heart as

  1528. working for

  1529. the Lord,

  1530. not for

  1531. men.

  1532. Since you

  1533. know that

  1534. you receive

  1535. an inheritance

  1536. from the

  1537. Lord as

  1538. a reward,

  1539. it is the

  1540. Lord Christ

  1541. that you

  1542. are serving.

  1543. Let's pray.

  1544. Gracious

  1545. Father, may

  1546. your favour

  1547. be upon us

  1548. and give us

  1549. hope and

  1550. purpose and

  1551. meaning and

  1552. joy in our

  1553. weekly work.

  1554. Pour out

  1555. your favour

  1556. on us and

  1557. establish the

  1558. work of our

  1559. hands for

  1560. honour and

  1561. glory of

  1562. your name

  1563. and the

  1564. joy of

  1565. all people.

  1566. Amen.
