  1. jobs that no one else wanted to do. Jobs like rattle snake catcher, roadkill collector,

  2. shark attack suit tester, maggot farmer, spider venom collector, and septic tank cleaner.

  3. The show's main message was that work is good, even dirty jobs. Work with dirty jobs was good,

  4. and Mike, the host, said that he had, in fact, witnessed many people doing all kinds of odd and

  5. dirty and hard work and yet enjoying it. And that rings true with the message that I preached last

  6. week about the dignity of all work, because each one of us has been assigned our vocation by God to

  7. work out his purposes in this world. When you watch the show, though, it's obvious that while there are

  8. many positive aspects with the dirty jobs that Mike trials, there's also the negatives in some

  9. of the work. Like when he listed the requirements for roadkill collector, the negatives were that

  10. you need to be able to brave on oncoming traffic, especially if the roadkill was not quite dead yet

  11. and you needed to dispatch it or something. And also, you need to have a strong stomach.

  12. Like, the positive is that you get to work outdoors. Now, I'm not sure if the positive ultimately

  13. outweighs the negatives in those sort of work, but anyway. But it doesn't matter whether whatever

  14. your frontline is, whether it's at home, it's in a classroom, it's on a factory floor, it's in a

  15. national park, in an office cubicle. Work can be a source of great purpose and dignity,

  16. but also a source of great frustration in our lives. Dealing with difficult customers, a demanding

  17. boss, inclement weather, a family's mountain of laundry, a two-year-old, an elderly parent,

  18. lingering unemployment, underemployment, overemployment. It can all be a huge pain.

  19. And so it's pretty important for Christians, I think, to understand and to hold in tension

  20. both what the Bible says about creation, as we looked at last week, and what it says about the

  21. fall and the destructive consequences of sin. That is, it's important to hold in tension both the

  22. dignity of work and the difficulty of work, the dignity of our vocation, where God's put us, and the

  23. difficulty of our vocation. And that is why so many Christians inhabit the extremes of idealism and

  24. cynicism, or even ricochet between idealism and cynicism on a regular basis. Idealism says,

  25. through my work, my vocation, my station in life, I'm going to change the world. I'm going to make a

  26. difference, I'm going to accomplish something new, and I'm going to bring justice to this world. I'm

  27. going to do everything that previous generations did not do, and failed to do. So idealism is probably

  28. more prevalent amongst those who are younger amongst us. Cynicism says nothing really changes,

  29. don't get your hopes up, do what it takes to make a living, don't let yourself care too much,

  30. get out of it whatever you can. And so cynicism is probably prevalent amongst those who have got a

  31. few more runs on the board advancing in years amongst us. But either way, we can be jumping

  32. between the two. Christians have, through their hope in God's story of redemption for the world that he

  33. created a deep contentment that enables them to work with all their being and never be ultimately

  34. discouraged by the frustrating reality of this world. And our concern in this series is how,

  35. in this context of both purpose and difficulty, that we might pursue our vocation in line with

  36. Colossians 3. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men,

  37. since you know that you'll receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ

  38. you are serving. That is, you are in the midst of your vocation, and with all the difficulties

  39. associated with it, still being able to look forward with hope, because God has a great eternal plan

  40. that he's working out through you. So how do we live out, Colossians 3, in the ordinary,

  41. of Monday to Saturday, even on front lines that make no reference to God whatsoever?

  42. And one way is to live lives transformed by Jesus on those front lines. That is to model godly

  43. character, our concern for tonight. Character, it's true, the character shines through in all that we do.

  44. And in thinking about modelling godly character, I'm thinking about more than just being nice.

  45. I'm thinking about something that's much more than middle class, North Shore, nice values. I'm thinking

  46. something a lot more than just being Canadian and just being nice. I'm thinking something a bit more

  47. than just hovering around in the world with this divine grin on your face. Modelling godly character

  48. is so much more than just niceness, in the same way that real love is so much more than niceness.

  49. Love requires courage, determination, and sacrifice. All the things that you husbands put into

  50. Valentine's Day today. Love, courage, determination, sacrifice.

  51. Because there's a few... Oh, hang on, Valentine's Day? It's Valentine's Day, is it? Forgot that one.

  52. Don't worry, as I said this morning, I bought a $2 bag of heart-shaped chocolates,

  53. which my girls devoured before Nat got one. Galatians 5 says the godly character is the fruit of God

  54. working in our lives by His Spirit. Verse 22 in Galatians 5. Grab your Bibles, smartphones,

  55. as Sam said, whatever. Get to Galatians 5, verse 22. It's a list of traits that God is working out in

    Galatians 5:22

  56. His people. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

  57. gentleness, and self-control. Some paraphrase the list of this fruit as love, joy, peace,

  58. patience, kindness, integrity, courage, humility, and self-control. Now, either way, it's a pretty

  59. daunting list. It's an impressive list. It's not an exhaustive list of all the things that God's

  60. working out on you, but it's pretty impressive and daunting. Love. It's the Christ-like reaction

  61. to malice. Joy. The Christ-like reaction to depressing and difficult circumstances. Peace

  62. as the Christ-like reaction to troubles and threats and anxiety. Patience as the Christ-like reaction to

  63. all that raises your blood pressure. Kindness as the Christ-like reaction to all who are unkind and cruel.

  64. Goodness is the Christ-like reaction to bad people, naughty people, and bad behavior. Faithfulness is the

  65. Christ-like reaction to lies and distortions and untruths. Gentleness is the Christ-like reaction to

  66. anger. Self-control as a Christ-like reaction to every situation where you want the

  67. sinful nature to take over and lead. That's pretty daunting. It's not niceness. It's not what we're

  68. talking about. Now, my focus here is not to unpack each one of those, but to go much broader.

  69. I want to say two things, two things about the fruit of the Spirit with 12 to 15 sub-points under

  70. each thing. No, it's not quite true. Two things. The first is the fruit of the Spirit is about

  71. supernatural internal transformation by God and not external moral constraint. That's the first thing.

  72. I'll unpack that in a minute. The second thing I'm going to say is that unless the fruit of the Spirit

  73. are growing together, then none of them are there in their supernatural form.

  74. That's the two things. And then I'm going to talk about how do we grow under Spirit.

  75. Okay? So let's understand the Spirit, the fruits of the Spirit. So having listed the fruit in verse 22,

  76. at the end of verse 23, it says, against such things, there is no law. There's a list of the nine

  77. traits. And then it says, against such things, there is no law. And now that is pretty significant.

  78. And so I need to explain what that little bit means just there. Imagine New South Wales Parliament

  79. passed the law against joylessness and anxiety. It is now against the law in New South Wales to be

  80. joyless and to be anxious. That would be pretty useless as a law. Because law is a form of moral

  81. constraint that is essentially negative in its nature. Law works to stop the results of a messed up heart,

  82. but it can't get into the inside and deal with the messed upness of the heart.

  83. You see, a well-enforced law might stem the tide of murder, might even stamp out murder.

  84. But it can't reach in and get to the anger which is in a heart, which is the root of murder.

  85. Murder is the consequence of a problem in a heart. Against pride and anxiety and joylessness and fear

  86. and all the other root problems in your heart and my heart, law is useless. Law cannot get into the

  87. heart where the root problem is. And so it cannot constrain my heart.

  88. The answer to that is in verse 24 and 25. The Holy Spirit. The Spirit can go where the law can't go.

  89. You see, the Holy Spirit and the law working together can constrain you externally, but only the Spirit

  90. can go internally and bring transformation in the root problem. Only the Spirit can deal with the

  91. internal problem of messed up heart. And the practical difference between the law and the Spirit is

  92. enormous. The difference between an external moral constraint of the law and the internal

  93. transformation, supernatural transformation of the Spirit is very significant. The British have a

  94. saying, no man is a hero to his valet. No man is a hero to his valet. Now I've watched Downton Abbey and so

  95. I know what a valet is. A valet is a wealthy man's personal male attendant who's responsible for his clothes,

  96. for his appearance, for his personal details like his bank accounts and running his bath and sponging

  97. his back. All sorts of stuff like that. What the saying means is that no matter how grand your public

  98. persona is, in private your valet sees warts and all. He sees what you truly are like and what you truly want

  99. to be. The valet sees the impatience, the selfishness, the irritability, the pettiness, the anxiety, the

  100. jealousy, the joylessness. And so no man is a hero to his valet because his valet sees what he's really like.

  101. And what this means is that when you use the law to constrain a person morally, externally, you do it at the

  102. expense of joy and peace. Which themselves are two fruits of the Spirit, you might notice.

  103. Law externally constrains you from doing what you want to internally do. And so it constrains you

  104. and locks you to a position of joylessness and peacelessness.

  105. Think about how you raise a child. You get them and you say to them,

  106. we don't want you to do this or this or this or this or this or this or this or this.

  107. And you had

  108. better not do it because firstly,

  109. you'll get caught.

  110. God will catch you,

  111. police will catch you or I will catch you.

  112. And secondly, you better not do it because

  113. what will people think of you?

  114. And thirdly, you better not do it because

  115. you will end up

  116. despising yourself. You'll have no respect

  117. for yourself.

  118. How are we making

  119. kids moral at that point?

  120. We're making them moral by

  121. nurturing joylessness

  122. and peacelessness and

  123. anxiety and insecurity.

  124. As the law establishes

  125. external moral

  126. behavior at the expense of

  127. inner joy and peace,

  128. it establishes fear

  129. and pride

  130. that reveals itself

  131. where the valet

  132. and only the valet

  133. and you see it.

  134. Or your spouse,

  135. or your children,

  136. or your parents,

  137. or your team at work,

  138. or the people who know you the best.

  139. In the private place

  140. is where you find out

  141. whether you are morally

  142. constrained

  143. externally

  144. or you're supernaturally

  145. changed internally

  146. by the Holy Spirit.

  147. Only the Spirit will go deep.

  148. Only the Spirit makes you

  149. in your most private place

  150. and private time

  151. a person of joy

  152. and calm

  153. and peace

  154. and mercy

  155. and love

  156. and patience

  157. and kindness

  158. and courage

  159. and humility.

  160. Or to put it another way,

  161. if you are not

  162. more of a hero

  163. to the people

  164. who know you

  165. the best,

  166. then you should

  167. probably have

  168. an alarm bell

  169. ringing right now.

  170. That is,

  171. if you've got

  172. this great persona

  173. with some people,

  174. great guy,

  175. great at his work,

  176. and yet the people

  177. who know you the best

  178. don't regard you

  179. as a hero,

  180. ding, ding, ding, ding, ding,

  181. should be going off

  182. right now.

  183. So how are you getting on

  184. on the inside?

  185. Are you a hero

  186. to those who know you

  187. the best?

  188. Or do they laugh

  189. about you

  190. over drinks?

  191. That's a scary question,

  192. I know.

  193. But it's going to get

  194. just slightly more scarier.

  195. Because the second thing

  196. to notice

  197. is that the fruit

  198. all come together.

  199. If they are not

  200. growing all together,

  201. they are not

  202. growing at all,

  203. at least in their

  204. supernatural form.

  205. And I get that

  206. from verse 22.

  207. Notice the singular

  208. statement,

  209. the fruit of the

  210. Spirit is,

  211. and then goes on

  212. and lists nine traits.

  213. It doesn't say

  214. the fruits of the

  215. Spirit are.

  216. The outcome

  217. of the work

  218. of the Holy Spirit

  219. in your life

  220. is nine traits.

  221. They're not

  222. separable traits.

  223. They are dependent

  224. on each other.

  225. Interdependent.

  226. The fruits of the Spirit

  227. are all aspects

  228. of the same thing.

  229. You can't be patient

  230. unless you're humble.

  231. You can't be kind

  232. with people

  233. unless you've got

  234. self-control.

  235. You can't have

  236. integrity

  237. with this group

  238. at work

  239. and this group

  240. at home

  241. unless you have

  242. tremendous amount

  243. of inner peace

  244. and security

  245. with Christ

  246. that just allows you

  247. to flourish

  248. wherever you are.

  249. They have to be together.

  250. If they're not

  251. together

  252. then they're not

  253. there at all.

  254. It's important

  255. to grapple with this

  256. so that you can

  257. recognize

  258. and evaluate

  259. the work

  260. of the Spirit

  261. in your life.

  262. The temptation

  263. here

  264. is to look

  265. at this list

  266. and to give

  267. our scores

  268. based on

  269. how many

  270. of these traits

  271. we think we're good

  272. at and how many

  273. we're kind of okay

  274. at and that one's

  275. not so good.

  276. And so we give

  277. ourselves a score

  278. and go six out of ten

  279. or nine

  280. and that's pretty good.

  281. That's more

  282. than a pass mark

  283. so I must be okay.

  284. And that would be wrong.

  285. They are interrelated

  286. and so they must

  287. grow together.

  288. Now let me just

  289. take a little bit

  290. of pressure off.

  291. There can be

  292. some lag here

  293. where some

  294. are growing

  295. faster than others

  296. but they

  297. must all

  298. be growing.

  299. That's not just

  300. Galatians.

  301. That's a thrust

  302. of it.

  303. See,

  304. long before Karl Marx

  305. and Friedrich Nietzsche

  306. said that people

  307. followed moral behavior

  308. out of fear

  309. and pride

  310. and desire

  311. for power

  312. over other people,

  313. the Apostle Paul

  314. said in 1 Corinthians 13

  315. that it's extremely

  316. possible

  317. for people

  318. to live

  319. a moral life

  320. without love

  321. as the foundation

  322. of that life.

  323. That is

  324. out of

  325. self-interest.

  326. That is

  327. without a heart

  328. that's being changed

  329. by the grace

  330. and love of God.

  331. Now that's

  332. really important

  333. because it's

  334. pretty typical

  335. for people

  336. who are kind

  337. and gentle

  338. and diplomatic

  339. and just

  340. so empathetic

  341. not

  342. to be

  343. assertive,

  344. to be bold

  345. or to be

  346. courageous.

  347. They might

  348. have gentleness

  349. but they lack

  350. probably

  351. the best

  352. translation

  353. in the list

  354. is faithfulness.

  355. They aren't

  356. good at

  357. confronting

  358. and courage.

  359. On the other

  360. hand,

  361. there are people

  362. who are very

  363. bold and assertive

  364. and directive

  365. but tend

  366. to be impatient.

  367. A little

  368. on the harsh

  369. side.

  370. They lack

  371. empathy.

  372. And in both

  373. cases,

  374. the character

  375. traits are

  376. more natural

  377. personality traits

  378. given by God,

  379. I acknowledge,

  380. rather than

  381. inner transformation

  382. of the spirit.

  383. You see,

  384. if your gentleness

  385. and your diplomacy

  386. were coming out

  387. of a heart

  388. that's transformed

  389. by God

  390. and radically

  391. secure

  392. in His love,

  393. you would

  394. be bold

  395. because

  396. you wouldn't

  397. be afraid

  398. of anything

  399. or anyone

  400. because you

  401. know you're

  402. secure in

  403. Jesus.

  404. And if

  405. that's not

  406. the case,

  407. then the

  408. gentleness

  409. and the

  410. diplomacy

  411. is most

  412. likely

  413. a natural

  414. temperamental

  415. sweetness,

  416. niceness.

  417. Now,

  418. that's good.

  419. Good in

  420. people and

  421. good in

  422. certain

  423. circumstances,

  424. but in a

  425. significant

  426. part,

  427. it's most

  428. likely

  429. cowardly.

  430. good for

  431. many people,

  432. but in a

  433. way,

  434. if your

  435. boldness

  436. and your

  437. directness

  438. were coming

  439. out of a

  440. heart that's

  441. transformed by

  442. God,

  443. radically

  444. secure in

  445. His love,

  446. you would

  447. be empathetic

  448. and gentle

  449. and kind.

  450. And so,

  451. if you're

  452. not,

  453. then the

  454. courage and

  455. the boldness

  456. and the

  457. assertiveness

  458. is most

  459. likely a

  460. natural

  461. temperament

  462. of assertiveness,

  463. good for

  464. many people

  465. and situations,

  466. but in a

  467. significant

  468. part,

  469. most likely

  470. arrogance.

  471. All the

  472. traits of

  473. the fruit of

  474. the Spirit

  475. have to be

  476. there in

  477. order for

  478. any of

  479. them to

  480. be there

  481. in their

  482. supernatural

  483. God-transformed

  484. form.

  485. We are

  486. only as

  487. spiritually

  488. mature as

  489. our weakest

  490. trait.

  491. So go to

  492. your weakest

  493. trait.

  494. That's the

  495. level of the

  496. work of the

  497. Holy Spirit

  498. in your

  499. life.

  500. Now,

  501. some of us

  502. here are

  503. starting to

  504. feel a little

  505. uncomfortable,

  506. I hope.

  507. As I was

  508. when I was

  509. putting this

  510. down on

  511. paper,

  512. go to

  513. your least,

  514. I mean,

  515. the best thing

  516. for me to do

  517. is to go and

  518. ask my

  519. valet,

  520. Nat,

  521. I mean,

  522. she's the

  523. person who

  524. knows me

  525. better than

  526. anyone else.

  527. She's not

  528. literally my

  529. valet,

  530. but please

  531. don't repeat

  532. that.

  533. But to go

  534. to her and

  535. say,

  536. which one

  537. do you

  538. think?

  539. And it's a

  540. scary thing

  541. for me to

  542. go to her

  543. and say,

  544. which one

  545. do you

  546. think?

  547. I mean,

  548. she might

  549. come back

  550. and say,

  551. one.

  552. I mean,

  553. you know,

  554. we're starting

  555. to feel a little

  556. uncomfortable,

  557. and I expect

  558. that's not

  559. entirely bad.

  560. Let me help

  561. you out just

  562. a little bit

  563. here.

  564. It's important

  565. to remember

  566. the growth

  567. in the fruit

  568. of the Spirit

  569. is gradual.

  570. Verse 19

  571. says that the

  572. acts of the

  573. sinful nature

  574. are,

  575. and then it

  576. goes a bunch

  577. of lists,

  578. an action

  579. happens.

  580. It's an

  581. action.

  582. It happens.

  583. I mean,

  584. some actions

  585. might take a

  586. bit longer,

  587. but it's an

  588. action.

  589. Fruit,

  590. on the other

  591. hand,

  592. is a character

  593. trait that

  594. builds.

  595. It grows.

  596. It comes

  597. slowly.

  598. See,

  599. I've got a

  600. tomato plant

  601. over there in

  602. my garden,

  603. and I can't

  604. tell the

  605. difference between

  606. yesterday and

  607. today.

  608. I mean,

  609. I'm assuming

  610. it's growing

  611. because it's

  612. not dying

  613. yet,

  614. and it has

  615. grown over

  616. time,

  617. but I can't

  618. see it.

  619. I mean,

  620. I can stick a

  621. measuring stick

  622. against it,

  623. and I can see

  624. it happen,

  625. but it happens

  626. slowly,

  627. and I can't

  628. always see it

  629. working.

  630. And every so

  631. often,

  632. God puts a

  633. measuring stick

  634. against us,

  635. and we get to

  636. check our

  637. progress as to

  638. whether we're

  639. growing or not.

  640. It might be

  641. that you faced

  642. a situation,

  643. a familiar

  644. situation to

  645. you that you

  646. faced 12

  647. months ago,

  648. and you look

  649. at your

  650. response to

  651. it now compared

  652. to then,

  653. and you go,

  654. oh,

  655. that's different.

  656. I wouldn't

  657. have done

  658. that 12

  659. months ago.

  660. Measuring

  661. stick.

  662. You're actually

  663. growing at

  664. that point,

  665. and that's

  666. God's grace

  667. to us.

  668. The last

  669. sentence of

  670. verse 17

  671. is comforting,

  672. I think.

  673. Having talked

  674. about the sinful

  675. nature and the

  676. spirit,

  677. it says,

  678. they are in

  679. conflict with

  680. each other,

  681. so that you

  682. do not do

  683. what you

  684. want.

  685. And at the

  686. very least,

  687. it means that

  688. a person

  689. growing in

  690. the fruit of

  691. the spirit,

  692. growing in

  693. godly character,

  694. can routinely

  695. go through

  696. seasons where

  697. they are just

  698. giving into the

  699. sinful nature.

  700. It seems like

  701. there's not

  702. progress

  703. whatsoever.

  704. Paul is

  705. assuming here

  706. that you will

  707. feel like you're

  708. not making

  709. progress.

  710. And more

  711. significantly,

  712. I want to

  713. say that if

  714. that is your

  715. wrestle,

  716. when you are

  717. wrestling with

  718. that,

  719. feeling like

  720. you're not

  721. growing in

  722. love or

  723. patience or

  724. gentleness or

  725. boldness,

  726. it is a

  727. sign of the

  728. spirit working

  729. in you.

  730. So hang in

  731. there.

  732. So there

  733. are a few

  734. things,

  735. that's the

  736. spirit,

  737. work of the

  738. fruit of the

  739. spirit generally,

  740. and there's a

  741. few things about

  742. how we might

  743. grow the fruit

  744. of the spirit

  745. in such a way

  746. that become a

  747. hero to your

  748. valet.

  749. notice 24,

  750. it says,

  751. verse 24,

  752. those who

  753. belong to

  754. Christ Jesus

  755. have crucified

  756. the sinful

  757. nature with

  758. his passions

  759. and desires.

  760. Since we

  761. live by the

  762. spirit,

  763. let us keep

  764. in step

  765. with the

  766. spirit.

  767. The first

  768. thing is

  769. that we are

  770. to crucify

  771. the sinful

  772. nature.

  773. And what's

  774. mentioned here,

  775. what it means

  776. by that,

  777. is different

  778. from what it

  779. says in

  780. Galatians

    Galatians 2:20

  781. chapter 2

  782. verse 20

  783. and Romans

  784. 6.6,

  785. where we

  786. are united

  787. with Jesus

  788. through being

  789. crucified in

  790. his crucifixion

  791. and for

  792. our atonement

  793. for our sin.

  794. This verse

  795. is referring

  796. to the work

  797. that we do,

  798. not the work

  799. that Jesus

  800. does,

  801. who are now

  802. united with

  803. Jesus.

  804. So it's very

  805. similar to

  806. Mark chapter 8

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  807. where Jesus

  808. says,

  809. you want to

  810. come follow

  811. me,

  812. take a big

  813. cross and

  814. follow me.

  815. It's Jesus'

  816. very vivid

  817. speech for a

  818. life of self

  819. denial.

  820. And so here,

  821. the apostle

  822. Paul takes

  823. Jesus'

  824. call to

  825. take up

  826. our cross

  827. and follow

  828. him to

  829. its logical

  830. conclusion.

  831. He wants

  832. to make

  833. sure that

  834. as we

  835. take up

  836. our cross,

  837. we actually

  838. get to

  839. the point

  840. of execution.

  841. He wants

  842. to make

  843. sure that

  844. the execution

  845. of the

  846. sinful nature

  847. actually takes

  848. place.

  849. So that's

  850. the first

  851. thing,

  852. we crucify

  853. the sinful

  854. nature,

  855. the work

  856. that we

  857. do.

  858. The second

  859. thing is

  860. that we

  861. live by

  862. the spirit.

  863. So let

  864. us keep

  865. in step

  866. with the

  867. spirit.

  868. The Holy

  869. Spirit works

  870. through means

  871. to crucify

  872. the sinful

  873. nature as

  874. well as to

  875. help us to

  876. keep in step

  877. with the

  878. spirit.

  879. The Holy

  880. Spirit works

  881. through means,

  882. objective

  883. means of

  884. grace like

  885. the Bible,

  886. prayer,

  887. prayer,

  888. worship,

  889. Christian

  890. fellowship,

  891. as well as

  892. subjective means

  893. of grace

  894. where we

  895. open ourselves

  896. to being

  897. changed.

  898. And,

  899. you know,

  900. things like

  901. we're thinking

  902. about where

  903. we are,

  904. listening,

  905. questioning,

  906. hearing the

  907. critique and

  908. admonition of

  909. others,

  910. examining our

  911. hearts,

  912. sharing our

  913. hearts,

  914. and weighing

  915. Christian

  916. brothers and

  917. sisters'

  918. response to

  919. our lives.

  920. to put it

  921. simply,

  922. Paul is

  923. describing

  924. here,

  925. what he's

  926. describing is

  927. in crucifying

  928. the sinful

  929. nature and

  930. walking in

  931. step with the

  932. spirit is a

  933. life of

  934. repentance.

  935. That's what

  936. he's talking

  937. about.

  938. We are

  939. turning our

  940. back on one

  941. way,

  942. enabled by the

  943. Holy Spirit,

  944. we're turning

  945. our back on

  946. one way of

  947. life,

  948. and we're

  949. walking with

  950. the Holy

  951. Spirit into

  952. a new way

  953. of life.

  954. But mark

  955. this,

  956. note this,

  957. if you've

  958. kind of switched

  959. off a little

  960. bit,

  961. wake up at

  962. this point.

  963. This is

  964. essential to

  965. this life of

  966. repentance,

  967. and it's

  968. this,

  969. rejoice in

  970. order to

  971. repent.

  972. Notice the

  973. beginning of

  974. verse 24,

  975. very significant.

  976. If you've

  977. got your

  978. Bible,

  979. open it,

  980. notice the

  981. beginning of

  982. verse 24.

  983. It says,

  984. those who

  985. already belong

  986. to Jesus

  987. crucify the

  988. sinful nature.

  989. Only those

  990. who are already

  991. His can

  992. crucify the

  993. sinful nature.

  994. Only those

  995. who belong,

  996. who know that

  997. they belong to

  998. Jesus, and I

  999. would suggest to

  1000. the degree that

  1001. they know that

  1002. they belong to

  1003. Jesus, and

  1004. that they are

  1005. secure in

  1006. Jesus, they

  1007. are safe in

  1008. Jesus, will

  1009. then crucify the

  1010. sinful nature and

  1011. His passions.

  1012. Only

  1013. Christianity

  1014. says that.

  1015. Every other

  1016. religion says

  1017. that if you

  1018. crucify the

  1019. flesh, then

  1020. you belong to

  1021. God.

  1022. If you do

  1023. the right thing,

  1024. then you'll be

  1025. included.

  1026. If you do,

  1027. then you will

  1028. be.

  1029. And that's

  1030. not how the

  1031. Christian gospel

  1032. works.

  1033. Christianity

  1034. says, if you

  1035. be, then

  1036. you will do.

  1037. If you

  1038. understand that

  1039. in Jesus, you

  1040. already belong,

  1041. you're already

  1042. accepted, you

  1043. are already His

  1044. forever, you

  1045. will crucify the

  1046. sinful nature

  1047. with joy.

  1048. There's that

  1049. word joy back

  1050. in there again.

  1051. You will do it

  1052. with joy.

  1053. You see, there

  1054. is a way of

  1055. wounding the

  1056. sinful nature

  1057. with fear.

  1058. fear.

  1059. Moral

  1060. constraint

  1061. feeds on

  1062. fear.

  1063. You had

  1064. better stop

  1065. that, Steve,

  1066. otherwise God's

  1067. going to get

  1068. you and people

  1069. are going to

  1070. think you're

  1071. stupid and

  1072. you're really

  1073. going to be

  1074. kicking yourself

  1075. in the

  1076. backside.

  1077. That's

  1078. fear.

  1079. The only

  1080. way to

  1081. crucify the

  1082. sinful nature,

  1083. to truly

  1084. repent, to

  1085. walk in the

  1086. spirit is with

  1087. joy.

  1088. It is looking

  1089. to what God

  1090. has already

  1091. done for you.

  1092. You see,

  1093. the Christian's

  1094. motivation to

  1095. live a life

  1096. of love

  1097. and joy

  1098. and peace

  1099. and patience

  1100. and kindness

  1101. and goodness

  1102. and faithfulness

  1103. and gentleness

  1104. and self-control

  1105. and humility

  1106. and courage

  1107. is the radical

  1108. love that we

  1109. receive from God.

  1110. Instead of

  1111. saying to

  1112. yourself,

  1113. you had

  1114. better stop

  1115. that because

  1116. God's going

  1117. to get you,

  1118. you say,

  1119. you better

  1120. stop that

  1121. because you

  1122. have a God

  1123. who's already

  1124. got you.

  1125. A God

  1126. who has

  1127. gone for

  1128. infinite lengths

  1129. in order to

  1130. never reject

  1131. you and

  1132. you're

  1133. forgetting

  1134. the joy

  1135. that what

  1136. he has

  1137. given you

  1138. in order

  1139. to go after

  1140. something that

  1141. is just so

  1142. less valuable

  1143. than what you

  1144. already have.

  1145. You see,

  1146. if we're

  1147. impatient with

  1148. others,

  1149. God doesn't

  1150. so much say

  1151. to us,

  1152. stop it

  1153. or I'm

  1154. going to

  1155. get you.

  1156. he says,

  1157. Steve,

  1158. have you

  1159. forgotten

  1160. how patient

  1161. I am

  1162. with you?

  1163. One last

  1164. thing about

  1165. growing in the

  1166. fruit of the

  1167. Spirit and

  1168. godly character.

  1169. You're never

  1170. going to grow

  1171. by yourself

  1172. as an

  1173. individual

  1174. consumer.

  1175. All this,

  1176. what I've

  1177. talked about,

  1178. walking with

  1179. the Spirit,

  1180. crucifying the

  1181. sinful nature,

  1182. all gets

  1183. worked out

  1184. in community.

  1185. To be

  1186. effective for

  1187. God's glory

  1188. on your

  1189. front line,

  1190. you need

  1191. the Christian

  1192. community.

  1193. Notice

  1194. verse 15.

  1195. Sam read it

  1196. out.

  1197. One verse

  1198. sort of before

  1199. the main focus.

  1200. Verse 15,

  1201. if you keep

  1202. on biting

  1203. and devouring

  1204. each other,

  1205. watch out

  1206. or you'll

  1207. be destroyed

  1208. by each

  1209. other.

  1210. Notice

  1211. verse 26.

  1212. It's the

  1213. last verse

  1214. of this

  1215. section we're

  1216. looking at.

  1217. Let us

  1218. not become

  1219. conceited,

  1220. provoking and

  1221. envying each

  1222. other.

  1223. You see,

  1224. Paul sees

  1225. the community

  1226. believers as

  1227. the way that

  1228. you're going

  1229. to get all

  1230. this done.

  1231. All this

  1232. transformation,

  1233. the crucifying of

  1234. one and inner

  1235. transformation of

  1236. the Spirit.

  1237. It's the

  1238. Christian community,

  1239. it's the place

  1240. and the way that

  1241. you're going to

  1242. get it all

  1243. done,

  1244. and he sees

  1245. that getting

  1246. this done

  1247. as the way

  1248. to better

  1249. Christian

  1250. community.

  1251. The community

  1252. of God's

  1253. people is

  1254. essential for

  1255. growth in

  1256. godly character,

  1257. and that's

  1258. why it's

  1259. quite possible

  1260. to be part

  1261. of a local

  1262. church,

  1263. to sit in

  1264. a pew,

  1265. to not be

  1266. relationally

  1267. connected for

  1268. decades,

  1269. and not

  1270. grow in

  1271. the fruit of

  1272. the Spirit.

  1273. Get in a

  1274. community

  1275. group,

  1276. if you

  1277. want to

  1278. grow in

  1279. the fruit

  1280. of the

  1281. Spirit,

  1282. at least

  1283. as a

  1284. starting

  1285. point.

  1286. In the

  1287. frontline

  1288. course that

  1289. I've based

  1290. this sermon

  1291. series on,

  1292. there's this

  1293. little video

  1294. clip telling

  1295. the story of

  1296. a Christian

  1297. office assistant

  1298. who has a

  1299. real ogre as

  1300. a boss,

  1301. and the boss

  1302. is bad

  1303. tempered,

  1304. the boss

  1305. is irrational,

  1306. makes every

  1307. day a

  1308. complete nightmare

  1309. for this

  1310. poor girl.

  1311. The office

  1312. assistant

  1313. regularly prayed

  1314. for patience,

  1315. strength,

  1316. for character,

  1317. and also

  1318. prayed for

  1319. the boss

  1320. to change,

  1321. that he

  1322. wouldn't be

  1323. such an

  1324. ogre.

  1325. He didn't.

  1326. He never

  1327. changed.

  1328. After three

  1329. years of

  1330. praying for

  1331. support and

  1332. change,

  1333. she ended

  1334. up walking

  1335. away from

  1336. that job

  1337. feeling like

  1338. she didn't

  1339. make a

  1340. difference.

  1341. The boss

  1342. was still

  1343. the same.

  1344. She didn't

  1345. make a

  1346. difference.

  1347. She walked

  1348. away thinking

  1349. that she

  1350. had failed

  1351. in modelling

  1352. character,

  1353. the Christian

  1354. faith,

  1355. in her

  1356. workplace.

  1357. Three weeks

  1358. after she

  1359. quit,

  1360. the person

  1361. who replaced

  1362. her rang

  1363. up and

  1364. said to

  1365. her,

  1366. it's

  1367. incredible

  1368. that you

  1369. lasted for

  1370. three years.

  1371. I'm thinking

  1372. of quitting

  1373. after three

  1374. weeks.

  1375. This

  1376. bloke's a

  1377. nightmare.

  1378. nightmare.

  1379. She found

  1380. out during

  1381. the course

  1382. of that

  1383. conversation

  1384. that she

  1385. was known

  1386. in the

  1387. office as

  1388. a person

  1389. of great

  1390. patience,

  1391. integrity,

  1392. and courage

  1393. in the face

  1394. of a difficult

  1395. situation.

  1396. She walked

  1397. away thinking

  1398. she'd

  1399. fail.

  1400. She wasn't

  1401. convinced she

  1402. was growing

  1403. in patience,

  1404. in godly

  1405. character.

  1406. It's great to

  1407. hear that

  1408. because you

  1409. might be in

  1410. a similar

  1411. situation where

  1412. you're at

  1413. work or

  1414. you're at

  1415. home,

  1416. you're with

  1417. a group of

  1418. friends,

  1419. you're with

  1420. your neighbours,

  1421. whatever your

  1422. front line is,

  1423. and you're

  1424. wondering in

  1425. fact whether

  1426. God is

  1427. even at

  1428. work,

  1429. at all,

  1430. at work,

  1431. through you.

  1432. You may

  1433. get to the

  1434. end of your

  1435. day and

  1436. feel that

  1437. little has

  1438. been done

  1439. for the

  1440. sake of

  1441. the kingdom

  1442. of God

  1443. and for

  1444. God's

  1445. glory.

  1446. And you

  1447. think that

  1448. because there's

  1449. this battle

  1450. raging within

  1451. your own

  1452. heart,

  1453. between the

  1454. sinful nature

  1455. and the

  1456. spirit,

  1457. and you

  1458. look at your

  1459. results and

  1460. you think that

  1461. nothing's

  1462. happening in

  1463. the workplace,

  1464. nothing's

  1465. happening with

  1466. my kids.

  1467. I just want

  1468. to say to

  1469. you that it

  1470. doesn't mean

  1471. that God is

  1472. not at

  1473. work.

  1474. God is at

  1475. work in

  1476. the redemption

  1477. of his

  1478. world.

  1479. And I want

  1480. to say the

  1481. fact is God

  1482. has been at

  1483. work in

  1484. you.

  1485. If the

  1486. fruit of the

  1487. spirit is

  1488. working in

  1489. you at

  1490. all,

  1491. that fruit

  1492. will be on

  1493. display.

  1494. And you're

  1495. probably the

  1496. last person

  1497. who can see

  1498. it.

  1499. Because you're

  1500. aware of the

  1501. battle.

  1502. All of this

  1503. growth in the

  1504. fruit of the

  1505. spirit happens

  1506. in the frustrations

  1507. and the joy

  1508. and the

  1509. challenges of

  1510. just another

  1511. ordinary day.

  1512. It is no

  1513. small thing to

  1514. model Christian

  1515. character that

  1516. is being

  1517. counter-culturally

  1518. transformed by

  1519. the spirit of

  1520. God.

  1521. And there

  1522. will be a

  1523. future day

  1524. when all

  1525. will be made

  1526. new and God

  1527. calls us to

  1528. work towards

  1529. that day.

  1530. Even if we

  1531. don't immediately

  1532. see the fruit

  1533. of his work

  1534. in our lives

  1535. or in the

  1536. world.

  1537. But I

  1538. suspect just

  1539. like that

  1540. young lady

  1541. got a

  1542. phone call

  1543. one day

  1544. and if

  1545. you never

  1546. get that

  1547. phone call

  1548. but one

  1549. day at the

  1550. end of time

  1551. I suspect

  1552. you'll be

  1553. astonished by

  1554. the way that

  1555. God has

  1556. used you

  1557. for his

  1558. glory and

  1559. the joy of

  1560. many people

  1561. just by

  1562. living out

  1563. the inner

  1564. transformation

  1565. of our

  1566. hearts in

  1567. the ordinary

  1568. circumstances of

  1569. life.

  1570. Take courage,

  1571. keep working

  1572. on the

  1573. fruit.
