  1. So what is happening is that Christians are finding it harder and harder to talk about God,

  2. talk about sex, talk about politics.

  3. We can talk about what you do, mention Jesus, and it's a different subject altogether.

  4. Let's just change that and talk about something else.

  5. Don't want to talk about religion.

  6. I've read, for instance, that Christian teachers are choosing not to wear crosses

  7. because they know that their credibility would be thrown out if they were known to be Christians.

  8. One student group, Christian student group, has decided not to speak about sex to its students on a university campus

  9. for fear of losing its university affiliation.

  10. Last year, new graduate employees at a major bank in Sydney were told on their first day that we don't do religion here.

  11. Talk of faith wasn't welcome and would be considered a breach of corporate policy.

  12. And just recently, you probably saw in the news or in newspapers this week,

  13. the University of Sydney's Union stated that the Sydney University's Evangelical Union

  14. must remove requirements for members to sign a faith-based declaration

  15. and threaten them with deregistration of the clubs and societies program

  16. if they do not comply by the end of this month.

  17. In practice, that means that non-believers could not only just be members of the Evangelical Union,

  18. but in fact could hold leadership positions in the executive committee.

  19. On many fronts, there is pressure to be quiet, to withdraw, to retreat from public spaces.

  20. Christians, not just Christians, in fact anyone who does not agree with the liberal left,

  21. basically, but Christians are being silenced.

  22. And yet God requires us, as his disciples, to be in this world

  23. and to speak as messengers of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  24. Jesus' own teaching in Luke chapter 24

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  25. shows that the nations need to hear and repent in order to be saved.

  26. They need to hear the gospel, the good news of Christ,

  27. and they need to repent in order to be saved.

  28. And against the command to himself be quiet about the risen Lord Jesus,

  29. Peter said the same thing in Acts chapter 4, verse 12.

    Acts 4:12

  30. Salvation is found in no one else,

  31. for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which they must be saved.

  32. And this itself was the great commission of the Lord Jesus

  33. to his disciples and to us in Matthew 28.

  34. All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.

  35. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations,

  36. baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  37. and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.

  38. I said in the first sermon in this series,

  39. this is now the end of it, we're coming to the close of front lines.

  40. In the first sermon in this series, seven weeks ago,

  41. I said that understood in the correct way,

  42. vocation, that is understood Christianly,

  43. vocation is centered in a sovereign God

  44. who calls us to embrace the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ

  45. and to follow him in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  46. That is a theology of vocation.

  47. And so the first and the primary calling of all people

  48. is to embrace the Lord Jesus as his disciples.

  49. That is, we are called to someone, not something or somewhere.

  50. The means by which God calls people to embrace their primary vocation

  51. is his disciples speaking as messengers of the very gospel

  52. that God calls people to embrace.

  53. But under that primary calling,

  54. we all have a secondary calling,

  55. a secondary position in life

  56. in which we live out our primary calling

  57. with faithfulness and fruitfulness

  58. to the God who has called us.

  59. And so how do we work out our primary calling

  60. to embrace Jesus,

  61. to call other people to embrace Jesus

  62. in a society that wants us to be quiet

  63. about that primary calling,

  64. especially in our places of our secondary calling.

  65. And I think the temptation for us

  66. is in fact to be quiet,

  67. to keep our heads down

  68. and in the end to propagate the secular sacred divide

  69. which this whole series is against.

  70. that is, to live two separate lives,

  71. my private life and my public life.

  72. Now let me say that

  73. there is a lot at stake

  74. for the people of our country at the moment.

  75. There's a lot at stake.

  76. There's a lot at stake for the people who want us to be quiet.

  77. A number of Christians

  78. are starting to speak up

  79. about religious freedom in our country

  80. and I think that's okay.

  81. But,

  82. I get a little concerned

  83. if the motivation for speaking up

  84. is for Christians

  85. to be allowed to be Christians.

  86. That is,

  87. I'm concerned

  88. if we are speaking up

  89. just to protect

  90. who we are

  91. and what we are allowed to do.

  92. Because that's not why

  93. we've been called to speak up.

  94. What's really at stake

  95. is the hope

  96. and the lives

  97. and the souls

  98. of millions of people

  99. who don't have hope.

  100. That's what's at stake.

  101. As Dr. Ralph Winter,

  102. he was a former

  103. American missiologist,

  104. scholar and pastor.

  105. He was one time director

  106. of the United States Center for World Mission.

  107. He made a very significant point

  108. about the task

  109. that is before us as Christians.

  110. He wrote this

  111. in 1978.

  112. We may do well

  113. to recognize

  114. what seems to be

  115. the consistent thrust

  116. of the whole Bible.

  117. That unless

  118. and until

  119. in faith

  120. the future

  121. of the world

  122. becomes

  123. more important

  124. than the future

  125. of the church,

  126. the church

  127. has no future.

  128. as Jesus

  129. puts it,

  130. the most dangerous

  131. thing you can do

  132. is seek

  133. to save

  134. your own life.

  135. Or to turn it around

  136. another way,

  137. being messengers

  138. of the gospel

  139. to our society

  140. is the only

  141. future

  142. of the church

  143. and it's not

  144. about protecting

  145. the church.

  146. Every church

  147. in history

  148. that has not

  149. reached out

  150. has in fact

  151. gone down.

  152. Every church

  153. that has existed

  154. to protect itself,

  155. to protect

  156. its rights,

  157. has gone

  158. down.

  159. God will

  160. always cause

  161. his people

  162. around the globe

  163. to give up

  164. their lives

  165. for the sake

  166. of

  167. his

  168. mission.

  169. but we

  170. have no

  171. biblical

  172. guarantee

  173. that any

  174. given

  175. denomination

  176. or local

  177. church

  178. or individual

  179. will endure

  180. to the end.

  181. Denominations

  182. have come

  183. and gone.

  184. Churches

  185. have risen

  186. up and

  187. disappeared

  188. and many

  189. individuals

  190. like seed

  191. sown among

  192. thorns

  193. have confessed

  194. faith in

  195. Christ

  196. but have been

  197. choked by the

  198. cares and riches

  199. and pleasures

  200. of this life.

  201. Luke chapter

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  202. 8.

  203. And so the

  204. future of the

  205. Anglican

  206. Diocese of

  207. Sydney,

  208. future of

  209. St. Paul's

  210. Chatswood,

  211. future of

  212. you and

  213. me,

  214. hangs on

  215. whether we

  216. lose our

  217. lives as

  218. messengers of

  219. Christ and

  220. the gospel

  221. for the sake

  222. of others,

  223. not for

  224. our sakes.

  225. And so our

  226. focus today

  227. is our

  228. personal

  229. readiness to

  230. be message of

  231. the gospel

  232. on our

  233. front line.

  234. This is

  235. first base

  236. stuff I

  237. think for

  238. us.

  239. And so the

  240. text which I've

  241. chosen is

  242. 1 Peter 3

  243. and especially

  244. 14 and

  245. 15 which

  246. come along

  247. with me on

  248. this.

  249. 1 Peter 3

    1 Peter 3:14

  250. verses 14

  251. and 15.

  252. What does

  253. it mean to

  254. be ready

  255. to make

  256. a case

  257. for your

  258. hope?

  259. And how

  260. are we to

  261. get ready

  262. and to

  263. stay ready?

  264. A clue to

  265. that is in

  266. 1 Peter 3

  267. and you do

  268. need your

  269. Bibles open

  270. because I

  271. want you to

  272. look at some

  273. stuff here

  274. fairly closely.

  275. 1 Peter 3

    1 Peter 3:15

  276. verse 15

  277. is the clue.

  278. It's the

  279. relationship

  280. between the

  281. phrase be

  282. ready and

  283. what comes

  284. just before

  285. it in the

  286. text.

  287. Literally

  288. and sorry

  289. for getting

  290. real technical

  291. here there

  292. is no

  293. verb in

  294. the phrase

  295. be ready

  296. or be

  297. prepared.

  298. Literally

  299. Peter says

  300. set apart

  301. Christ as

  302. Lord in

  303. your hearts

  304. ready always

  305. to make a

  306. case for

  307. your hope.

  308. That's what

  309. he literally

  310. says.

  311. And this

  312. suggests that

  313. there is a

  314. very close

  315. connection

  316. between

  317. setting

  318. apart

  319. Christ as

  320. Lord in

  321. your heart

  322. and

  323. always being

  324. ready to

  325. make a

  326. case for

  327. your hope.

  328. There's a

  329. connection

  330. there,

  331. close

  332. connection.

  333. So one

  334. key to

  335. understand

  336. what it

  337. means to

  338. set apart

  339. Christ as

  340. Lord in

  341. your heart

  342. is to

  343. notice that

  344. it is the

  345. alternative to

  346. fearing men.

  347. Verse 14

  348. is the

  349. Lord.

  350. But even if

  351. you should

  352. choose to

  353. be afraid,

  354. do not be

  355. frightened,

  356. but or

  357. instead

  358. in your

  359. heart set

  360. apart Christ

  361. as Lord.

  362. In other

  363. words,

  364. don't be

  365. afraid of

  366. the sort of

  367. things that

  368. men threaten

  369. you with.

  370. Instead,

  371. greatly

  372. revere

  373. Christ in

  374. your

  375. hearts.

  376. Setting

  377. apart

  378. Christ in

  379. our

  380. heart is

  381. what you

  382. do in

  383. order to

  384. not have

  385. fear in

  386. your heart

  387. of what

  388. men might

  389. do or

  390. say about

  391. you.

  392. That's what

  393. you do.

  394. So whatever

  395. setting apart

  396. Christ means,

  397. it is the

  398. opposite of

  399. fearing men.

  400. And it

  401. is, in

  402. fact, the

  403. source of

  404. your confidence

  405. and your

  406. hope.

  407. In verses

  408. 14 and

  409. 15, Peter

  410. is giving

  411. a Christian

  412. adaption to

  413. the text of

  414. Isaiah 8

    Isaiah 8:12–13

  415. verses 12

  416. to 13.

  417. And you

  418. might want to

  419. look at that

  420. with me.

  421. Isaiah 8

    Isaiah 8:12

  422. verses 12

  423. and 13.

  424. And it

  425. gives us a

  426. whole lot of

  427. help in

  428. deciding what

  429. it means to

  430. set apart

  431. Christ as

  432. Lord in

  433. our hearts.

  434. God gives

  435. Isaiah a

  436. warning in

  437. these verses

  438. about how

  439. we should

  440. feel, or

  441. how he

  442. should feel

  443. about his

  444. unbelieving

  445. countrymen,

  446. about the

  447. Lord God.

  448. And beginning

  449. at verse

  450. 11, he

  451. says,

  452. the Lord

  453. spoke to

  454. me with

  455. his

  456. strong

  457. hand upon

  458. me,

  459. warning me

  460. not to

  461. follow the

  462. ways of

  463. his people.

  464. He said,

  465. do not

  466. call

  467. conspiracy

  468. everything that

  469. they call

  470. conspiracy.

  471. Do not

  472. fear what

  473. they fear.

  474. Do not

  475. dread it.

  476. The Lord

  477. Almighty is

  478. the one you

  479. are to

  480. regard as

  481. holy.

  482. He's the

  483. one you

  484. are to

  485. fear.

  486. He is the

  487. one you

  488. are to

  489. dread.

  490. And so

  491. Peter takes

  492. this word

  493. of God

  494. addressed to

  495. Isaiah about

  496. his adversaries

  497. and he

  498. applies it to

  499. the Christians

  500. in his own

  501. day and

  502. our day in

  503. relation to

  504. our

  505. adversaries.

  506. And he

  507. says,

  508. don't fear

  509. what they

  510. fear, but

  511. regard the

  512. Lord instead.

  513. Isaiah 8,

  514. 14 makes

  515. it clear

  516. that the

  517. way to

  518. regard God

  519. or to

  520. treat him

  521. as holy

  522. is to

  523. fear him

  524. instead of

  525. fearing what

  526. men fear

  527. or to

  528. dread him

  529. instead of

  530. dreading what

  531. they dread.

  532. But God

  533. doesn't mean

  534. that we

  535. are always

  536. to be

  537. gripped by

  538. an emotional

  539. fear when

  540. God is

  541. our Lord.

  542. That would

  543. seem to,

  544. in my mind,

  545. to be an

  546. invitation to

  547. misery, I

  548. would think.

  549. And I

  550. don't think

  551. that's what

  552. he means

  553. here.

  554. One clue

  555. that he

  556. doesn't

  557. mean that

  558. is the

  559. very next

  560. phrase in

  561. verse 14.

  562. It's a

  563. promise for

  564. those who

  565. fear him

  566. as God.

  567. It says,

  568. God will

  569. become a

  570. sanctuary.

  571. sanctuary.

  572. A

  573. sanctuary is

  574. a place

  575. where you

  576. feel safe

  577. and secure

  578. and peaceful.

  579. Now, it

  580. seems on the

  581. surface to be

  582. somewhat paradoxical.

  583. If God is

  584. your dread,

  585. how can he

  586. be your

  587. refuge and

  588. your sanctuary?

  589. But it's

  590. not as

  591. paradoxical if

  592. we take the

  593. words of

  594. verse 14

  595. to not

  596. mean be

  597. constantly

  598. gripped by

  599. the emotion

  600. of fear,

  601. but rather

  602. or instead

  603. always regard

  604. the displeasure

  605. of God as

  606. more fearful

  607. than the

  608. displeasure of

  609. man.

  610. What God

  611. wants here

  612. from Isaiah

  613. is for the

  614. prospect of

  615. offending God

  616. to be much

  617. more dreadful

  618. thing to

  619. him than

  620. the prospect

  621. of being

  622. persecuted

  623. by people.

  624. And that's

  625. the way

  626. Isaiah

  627. was to

  628. revere the

  629. Lord.

  630. It's the way

  631. that Isaiah

  632. was to set

  633. apart God

  634. in his

  635. heart.

  636. The degree

  637. to which God

  638. was set

  639. apart in

  640. his heart

  641. was the

  642. same degree

  643. of his

  644. desire not

  645. to displease

  646. God.

  647. And what

  648. was it in

  649. particular in

  650. the context

  651. that would

  652. have displeased

  653. God?

  654. Verse 12,

  655. do not

  656. fear what

  657. they fear

  658. or be in

  659. dread of

  660. what they

  661. dread.

  662. God would

  663. have been

  664. displeased

  665. if Isaiah,

  666. he would

  667. have been

  668. displeased

  669. with him

  670. if he

  671. had feared

  672. the same

  673. thing that

  674. his unbelieving

  675. countrymen

  676. feared and

  677. that is

  678. the threats

  679. of people.

  680. And the

  681. reason is

  682. that God

  683. had made

  684. many promises

  685. to his

  686. people that

  687. should in

  688. fact have

  689. taken away

  690. the fear

  691. and instead

  692. filled them

  693. with confidence

  694. and hope.

  695. And so if

  696. Isaiah feared

  697. man and

  698. not God,

  699. it would

  700. show that he

  701. doesn't trust

  702. the promises

  703. of God.

  704. God had

  705. said,

  706. Isaiah 41

    Isaiah 41:10

  707. verse 10

  708. and 13,

  709. do not

  710. fear for

  711. I am with

  712. you,

  713. do not

  714. be dismayed

  715. for I am

  716. your God,

  717. I will

  718. strengthen

  719. you and

  720. help you,

  721. I will

  722. uphold you

  723. by my

  724. righteous

  725. hand for

  726. I am

  727. the Lord

  728. your God

  729. who takes

  730. hold of

  731. your right

  732. hand and

  733. says to

  734. you,

  735. do not

  736. fear because

  737. I will

  738. help you.

  739. God had

  740. promised him

  741. that already.

  742. God

  743. promised them

  744. that already

  745. and a

  746. bunch of

  747. other promises

  748. and if

  749. Isaiah feared

  750. the threats

  751. of God,

  752. he cast

  753. his vote

  754. against

  755. the

  756. trustworthiness

  757. of God

  758. and does

  759. not revere

  760. the Lord

  761. in his

  762. heart.

  763. But if

  764. we do

  765. not

  766. fear

  767. what

  768. men

  769. fear

  770. but

  771. instead

  772. fear

  773. to

  774. displease

  775. God

  776. and so

  777. trust in

  778. his

  779. promises

  780. then

  781. you

  782. reverence

  783. the Lord

  784. in your

  785. heart.

  786. You set

  787. apart

  788. Christ

  789. as Lord

  790. in your

  791. heart.

  792. And so

  793. what we see

  794. from the Old

  795. Testament

  796. background

  797. background

  798. of Peter's

  799. teaching here

  800. in chapter

  801. 3

  802. is that

  803. setting

  804. apart

  805. Christ

  806. as Lord

  807. in your

  808. heart

  809. means

  810. first of

  811. all

  812. feeling

  813. that to

  814. displease

  815. Christ

  816. is more

  817. fearful

  818. than the

  819. threats

  820. of any

  821. human

  822. being.

  823. Firstly

  824. and more

  825. specifically

  826. since what

  827. displeases

  828. Christ

  829. most

  830. is

  831. unbelief

  832. in his

  833. promises

  834. promises

  835. then

  836. setting

  837. him

  838. apart

  839. in our

  840. hearts

  841. means

  842. setting

  843. your

  844. mind

  845. on his

  846. promises

  847. and

  848. setting

  849. your

  850. heart

  851. on

  852. trusting

  853. his

  854. promises.

  855. Promises

  856. like 1

    1 Peter 5:7

  857. Peter 5

  858. verse 7

  859. cast all

  860. your anxiety

  861. on him

  862. for he

  863. cares for

  864. you.

  865. Promises

  866. like 1

  867. Peter 5

  868. 10

  869. after you

  870. have

  871. suffered

  872. a little

  873. while

  874. the God

  875. of all

  876. grace

  877. who has

  878. called you

  879. to his

  880. eternal glory

  881. in Christ

  882. will himself

  883. restore

  884. establish

  885. and strengthen

  886. you.

  887. To set

  888. apart

  889. Christ as

  890. Lord in

  891. your

  892. hearts

  893. is to

  894. set your

  895. mind on

  896. his

  897. promises

  898. to take

  899. care of

  900. you

  901. and to

  902. trust those

  903. promises

  904. with all

  905. of your

  906. heart.

  907. And if

  908. you do

  909. in increasing

  910. measure

  911. the fear

  912. of men

  913. will

  914. decrease

  915. and instead

  916. be turned

  917. into hope.

  918. And you

  919. will have

  920. a reason

  921. to give

  922. for the

  923. hope that

  924. is in

  925. fact in

  926. your

  927. heart.

  928. Now if

  929. what Peter

  930. has written

  931. here seems

  932. like a

  933. tall order

  934. let's not

  935. forget

  936. that Peter

  937. discovered

  938. this secret

  939. of hope.

  940. He

  941. discovered the

  942. secret of

  943. boldness in

  944. the face of

  945. opposition

  946. after a

  947. massive

  948. failure.

  949. This is the

  950. Peter who

  951. declared that

  952. he would

  953. never forsake

  954. Jesus

  955. but waiting

  956. in a

  957. courtyard

  958. at the

  959. home of the

  960. high priest

  961. while Jesus

  962. was being

  963. questioned

  964. he failed

  965. miserably.

  966. Three times

  967. he denied

  968. he was a

  969. disciple of

  970. Jesus.

  971. He wasn't

  972. with Jesus.

  973. He did

  974. not know

  975. Jesus.

  976. And in the

  977. background in

  978. the shadows

  979. stood Jesus

  980. and Jesus

  981. turns and he

  982. looks at

  983. Peter and

  984. as he

  985. predicted the

  986. crow the

  987. cock crowed

  988. the rooster

  989. crowed the

  990. bird whatever

  991. it was crowed

  992. three times

  993. just as

  994. Jesus said

  995. it would.

  996. And

  997. contrast this

  998. in that

  999. moment in

  1000. that dark

  1001. night huddled

  1002. around that

  1003. fire and

  1004. the absolute

  1005. failure of

  1006. Peter running

  1007. out from

  1008. them bursting

  1009. into tears

  1010. failing Jesus

  1011. to because

  1012. he feared

  1013. man.

  1014. Contrast

  1015. that Peter

  1016. with the

  1017. Peter who

  1018. had seen

  1019. the risen

  1020. Jesus who

  1021. was filled

  1022. with the

  1023. Holy Spirit

  1024. he's no

  1025. longer huddled

  1026. around a

  1027. fire but he

  1028. stands as

  1029. the accused.

  1030. He who

  1031. had feared

  1032. to confront

  1033. a servant

  1034. girl now

  1035. confronts the

  1036. high court

  1037. and accuses

  1038. the high court

  1039. of crucifying

  1040. Jesus and

  1041. he refuses

  1042. to be silent

  1043. about the

  1044. resurrected

  1045. Jesus.

  1046. He says

  1047. we must

  1048. obey God

  1049. rather than

  1050. man.

  1051. in Acts

  1052. 4 and

  1053. 5.

  1054. You see

  1055. Peter shows

  1056. us that our

  1057. hope provides

  1058. both the

  1059. courage for

  1060. our frontline

  1061. witness and

  1062. in fact the

  1063. content of our

  1064. frontline

  1065. witness.

  1066. Our hope is

  1067. in the Lord

  1068. risen.

  1069. Our devotion

  1070. to Christ

  1071. makes us

  1072. ready not

  1073. only in

  1074. rationale

  1075. but in

  1076. attitude.

  1077. Notice it

  1078. says

  1079. give a reason

  1080. for the hope

  1081. you have

  1082. in gentleness.

  1083. Respect,

  1084. gentleness or

  1085. another word is

  1086. humility of

  1087. life is an

  1088. important,

  1089. is just as

  1090. important as

  1091. boldness with

  1092. the word.

  1093. Humility is

  1094. the other

  1095. result of

  1096. setting apart

  1097. Christ as

  1098. Lord in your

  1099. heart.

  1100. surely no

  1101. pride is

  1102. more offensive

  1103. than pride in

  1104. being trophies of

  1105. God's grace.

  1106. Is there

  1107. anything more

  1108. offensive than

  1109. that sort of

  1110. pride?

  1111. pride?

  1112. You see the

  1113. lack of fear

  1114. before man

  1115. doesn't lead to

  1116. pride or

  1117. smugness or

  1118. arrogance or

  1119. abrasiveness.

  1120. This humility

  1121. is far more

  1122. than politeness

  1123. and political

  1124. correctness.

  1125. It's an

  1126. attitude that

  1127. reflects the

  1128. fear of God

  1129. in your heart.

  1130. You don't want

  1131. to disappoint

  1132. Christ.

  1133. You want to

  1134. have the same

  1135. attitude of

  1136. Christ.

  1137. Christ.

  1138. And so I

  1139. wonder,

  1140. and just

  1141. wonder,

  1142. if the

  1143. reason we

  1144. aren't more

  1145. free and

  1146. natural in

  1147. testifying to

  1148. the reality of

  1149. our hope in

  1150. Christ, on

  1151. our front

  1152. lines or in

  1153. our society,

  1154. I just

  1155. wonder if

  1156. it's because

  1157. we don't feel

  1158. very hopeful

  1159. I wonder if

  1160. it's because

  1161. of lack of

  1162. hope that

  1163. we're not

  1164. free to

  1165. testify to

  1166. Christ.

  1167. And so the

  1168. fear of man

  1169. grips us.

  1170. I think that

  1171. if that's the

  1172. case, if we're

  1173. not hopeful,

  1174. when our

  1175. hearts are not

  1176. full of hope

  1177. in the promises

  1178. of Christ,

  1179. Christ, and

  1180. when the

  1181. occasion arises

  1182. at work or

  1183. at school,

  1184. university,

  1185. at a bar,

  1186. and the

  1187. opportunity is

  1188. there to make

  1189. a case for

  1190. our hope,

  1191. we sense it

  1192. in fact as a

  1193. duty to defend

  1194. doctrine.

  1195. doctrine.

  1196. If hope's not

  1197. there, it's

  1198. just a duty to

  1199. defend doctrine

  1200. instead of a

  1201. delight to tell

  1202. someone why we

  1203. have so much

  1204. hope in our

  1205. hearts.

  1206. Being

  1207. messengers of

  1208. the good news

  1209. of salvation in

  1210. Christ Jesus

  1211. will always be a

  1212. burdensome duty

  1213. to defend a

  1214. doctrine, as

  1215. long as

  1216. Christianity

  1217. means for us

  1218. simply accepting

  1219. certain doctrines

  1220. as truth and

  1221. keeping a

  1222. certain list of

  1223. do's and

  1224. don'ts.

  1225. That is, our

  1226. mission to the

  1227. world will

  1228. simply just be a

  1229. duty that we

  1230. have to do

  1231. if we don't

  1232. have hope in

  1233. our hearts.

  1234. Any concept

  1235. of being

  1236. messengers of

  1237. the gospel will

  1238. be a painful

  1239. duty to be

  1240. avoided if we

  1241. confess the

  1242. lordship of

  1243. Jesus with

  1244. little more

  1245. that are sent

  1246. in our minds.

  1247. If Jesus is

  1248. our treasure

  1249. and our

  1250. heart's

  1251. devotion,

  1252. then it is

  1253. a delight

  1254. to tell

  1255. someone why

  1256. we have

  1257. hope.

  1258. and I

  1259. fear that

  1260. too many

  1261. church

  1262. people have

  1263. simply

  1264. inherited the

  1265. motions of

  1266. church life

  1267. and outward

  1268. morality and

  1269. piety,

  1270. but the

  1271. heartfelt

  1272. reality of

  1273. Christ and

  1274. a joyful hope

  1275. in his

  1276. promises,

  1277. in spite of

  1278. opposition,

  1279. are foreign.

  1280. And so we

  1281. want to

  1282. defend our

  1283. way of

  1284. life,

  1285. not see

  1286. people wonder

  1287. Christ.

  1288. Christ.

  1289. And some

  1290. people who

  1291. are in

  1292. that position,

  1293. they can

  1294. defend a

  1295. doctrine,

  1296. but they

  1297. cannot make

  1298. a case for

  1299. the hope

  1300. that is

  1301. within them

  1302. because they

  1303. don't feel

  1304. hope brimming

  1305. up within

  1306. their hearts.

  1307. promise.

  1308. And so

  1309. the way

  1310. to get

  1311. ready

  1312. to be

  1313. messengers of

  1314. the gospel on

  1315. your front

  1316. line,

  1317. the way

  1318. to get

  1319. ready to

  1320. make a

  1321. case for

  1322. the hope

  1323. that you

  1324. have

  1325. is to

  1326. get hopeful.

  1327. Pretty

  1328. straightforward,

  1329. really.

  1330. it makes

  1331. the job

  1332. so simple.

  1333. It

  1334. simplifies it

  1335. for us.

  1336. Don't

  1337. start by

  1338. writing out

  1339. beforehand a

  1340. bunch of

  1341. answers to

  1342. someone else's

  1343. questions.

  1344. That's not

  1345. where you

  1346. start.

  1347. Apply

  1348. yourself to

  1349. settling the

  1350. questions of

  1351. your own

  1352. heart,

  1353. your own

  1354. mind.

  1355. do that

  1356. first.

  1357. That's

  1358. where hope

  1359. begins.

  1360. Settle

  1361. the questions

  1362. of your

  1363. own heart,

  1364. your own

  1365. mind.

  1366. We have

  1367. to find

  1368. for ourselves

  1369. reason enough

  1370. to get over

  1371. our fear of

  1372. men and to

  1373. live in

  1374. hope.

  1375. And if

  1376. our own

  1377. hope does

  1378. not spring

  1379. up from

  1380. something that

  1381. Christ did

  1382. or that

  1383. something that

  1384. Christ said,

  1385. then it

  1386. is a

  1387. mere

  1388. sham to

  1389. try and

  1390. make a

  1391. case for

  1392. someone else

  1393. to put

  1394. their hope

  1395. in Christ.

  1396. But if

  1397. we search

  1398. out the

  1399. promises of

  1400. Christ and

  1401. meditate on

  1402. his character

  1403. and work for

  1404. the sake of

  1405. banishing our

  1406. own fear and

  1407. kindling our

  1408. own hope,

  1409. then this

  1410. very act of

  1411. setting apart

  1412. Christ as

  1413. Lord in

  1414. our hearts

  1415. will be

  1416. the

  1417. preparation

  1418. for making

  1419. a case for

  1420. our hope to

  1421. others on

  1422. our front

  1423. lines.

  1424. And if it

  1425. is so,

  1426. then our

  1427. primary activity

  1428. in preparing

  1429. to witness

  1430. is to keep

  1431. our own

  1432. hearts happy

  1433. in Christ,

  1434. hopeful in

  1435. Christ.

  1436. And so that

  1437. means day

  1438. after day,

  1439. we go to

  1440. the scriptures

  1441. not anxiously

  1442. trying to

  1443. amass a

  1444. bunch of

  1445. arguments for

  1446. work colleagues

  1447. and university

  1448. students and

  1449. whatever else,

  1450. for every

  1451. possible rebuttal

  1452. that somebody

  1453. might have in

  1454. our secular

  1455. age.

  1456. We go there

  1457. day by day

  1458. because our

  1459. own hearts

  1460. are so

  1461. desperately

  1462. needy for

  1463. hope.

  1464. Because our

  1465. own hope

  1466. wanes.

  1467. Our own

  1468. trust in

  1469. the promises

  1470. of Christ

  1471. wanes.

  1472. We have

  1473. fears that

  1474. need to be

  1475. overcome by

  1476. the promises

  1477. of God.

  1478. We have

  1479. doubts that

  1480. need to be

  1481. answers.

  1502. hope.

  1503. hope.

  1504. And in
