  1. My question for you after a passage like that is, have you ever been thirsty?

  2. Like seriously, seriously, dangerously, you're feeling it, you're sick, thirsty.

  3. Why don't you stand up, give yourself 20 seconds, turn to the person you've come with or people

  4. that you know around you, stand up and just share that story, share that time where you've

  5. really, really felt it right now.

  6. So drinking is actually really important.

  7. I'm one of the pastors here, my name is Nick, I'm used to playing the guitar at the front

  8. and leading and doing a bit of stuff behind the scenes.

  9. I'm not used to being at the front, whenever I get up in front of people my voice just dries

  10. up, it's like a desert and I need to drink, so I'm actually really nervous and thirsty

  11. right now.

  12. But we really need water, don't we?

  13. It's actually something that gets painful pretty quick and we're dead in two or three

  14. days if we don't get it.

  15. We're completely in need and we can go without sleep or food or light, like when you go to

  16. Katoomba and go on kick.

  17. You can even go without human contact for weeks on end, but you can't go without water.

  18. After we breathe, we need to drink and everyone knows that thirst.

  19. Our thirst for water is mirrored in us in heaps of different ways, other desires in our life.

  20. And I'm sure you know a kind of thirst for other things, for practical needs and extravagant

  21. desires.

  22. Under the surface, these desires that are in us, under the surface of those, we're all chasing

  23. satisfaction.

  24. We long to be satisfied.

  25. If we can't get no satisfaction, then we're discontent.

  26. Now I know discontent and you know it too.

  27. Our discontentedness demands action.

  28. It says get happy and quick and it looks like a whole bunch of things.

  29. It can be, I think for me, it's tiredness and hunger and apathy.

  30. It's lots of things.

  31. We want to fill our lives with things.

  32. When I get tired and anxious, I raid the fridge and I put a TV show on and entertain myself.

  33. I escape.

  34. Those things I think I know won't satisfy me, but they're good distractions for my thirstiness.

  35. What does your discontent look like?

  36. Finish the sentence, I'd be satisfied if only I had.

  37. I'd be satisfied if only I was or looked like.

  38. What do you pursue to remove that discontentedness that you feel, that thirst in you?

  39. And may I suggest today, and this is actually really exciting, that there is an end available

  40. to our thirst.

  41. Somewhere to run to for water that can fill us up.

  42. A source to go to where we are satisfied forever, to return to ongoing, into eternity, and free

  43. for absolutely everyone.

  44. That's a pretty big talk.

  45. But the exciting thing is that we get to come to a pretty big God.

  46. So I need to hear about what this water is as much as you guys.

  47. And we're all among the thirsty today.

  48. You guys stood up and talked pretty loudly.

  49. So I assume you know what I'm talking about.

  50. So let's pray for God's help to hear him over what I say today.

  51. Let's pray.

  52. Lord God, we come to you as thirsty people with longing in us.

  53. We long to be satisfied, God, and I pray today that you would do that by your spirit,

  54. by the truth of your gospel.

  55. Amen.

  56. Guys, our yearning and our satisfaction, our thirst, is actually a really good thing.

  57. It's created in us.

  58. It's not an accident.

  59. It's given to us by God.

  60. And he didn't leave it as an unhelpful little burden that we have to carry.

  61. We thirst for God because he satisfies.

  62. If we only knew our creator completely, we would not have yearnings.

  63. We would not need endlessly.

  64. We would not thirst our way through this life.

  65. But naturally, humans thirst for everything but God.

  66. And we chase after the wrong things.

  67. We've got to somehow come back to God and get satisfied again.

  68. We're only ever going to be satisfied in God.

  69. And this matters.

  70. God did not come to tell us to ignore the desires in us for satisfaction.

  71. He wants our discontent quenched.

  72. He came to turn us around from our sin, to bring us back to the source that we were made to come to

  73. and provide us satisfaction and joy that's going to last.

  74. In the beginning, it was Adam and Eve.

  75. They had full access to God and full satisfaction in Him.

  76. That was a wonderful relationship where they had complete access to God.

  77. They thirsted for nothing.

  78. They worshipped with their whole lives.

  79. They were enamored by God's creation, His perfection and His presence.

  80. They were satisfied in Him.

  81. But ever since Adam and Eve chose to find their satisfaction elsewhere, we have followed them.

  82. Our sin cost us that access to God and we lost our satisfaction.

  83. Jesus knew this.

  84. He knew that we were without access to God and the satisfaction that that brings.

  85. Look at Jesus' prayer for us in Matthew 11.

  86. It's going to be on the screen.

  87. There it is.

  88. No one knows the Son except the Father and no one knows the Father except the Son

  89. and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

  90. Every one of us take our first breath of life into that situation.

  91. We're born without access to God.

  92. And with the discontentedness and thirst that comes from that, nobody knew Jesus when He came

  93. and only Jesus knew the Father.

  94. It's going to take God for us to know God.

  95. It's a bit confusing, but honestly, we're out of that loop.

  96. We're all undeserving.

  97. It's going to take an act of grace for us to ever know God.

  98. Unless God acts, we go on thirsting.

  99. Unless He meets our needs, we're going to stay in need.

  100. Unless God has a way for me to be satisfied beyond my abilities to do so,

  101. I'm going to stay anxious and weak.

  102. Unless God is your way to satisfaction,

  103. every underlying thirst and need in you is going to go unmet.

  104. So let's come together as thirsty people and see what God is going to offer us.

  105. John 4.

  106. If you don't have your Bible out or a screen on a phone or something in front of you, get it.

  107. Put your hand up.

  108. Someone will find you a Bible if you don't have it.

  109. I'm going to be jumping around in John 4.

  110. The situation is two people meeting near a well in Samaria.

  111. One of those was a woman getting water.

  112. The other was Jesus.

  113. The woman was a local Samaritan.

  114. Here's what we know about her.

  115. She had been in and out of marriages more than most people.

  116. She struggled with life and that wearisome daily trek to go get water.

  117. And she worried if she really knew who God was.

  118. She thirsted for much more than the water in her jar.

  119. She was discontent.

  120. She's just like us.

  121. Guys, today, right now, put yourself in her place.

  122. Because like her, we get tired of everything.

  123. We struggle with sin.

  124. And we're reaching out for God in some way.

  125. We're thirsty like her.

  126. We are her.

  127. But because God is gracious and for no merited reason,

  128. Jesus chose this woman on that day to be offered complete, lasting, eternal satisfaction.

  129. The first to be offered that.

  130. He starts the conversation.

  131. Will you give me a drink?

  132. It's astonishing that Jesus would do this.

  133. It is crazy culturally for him to step out and start that conversation.

  134. A Jew would never address a Samaritan.

  135. Wouldn't speak to them.

  136. They would never drink from a Samaritan's cup when they'd made or touched or even been seen near.

  137. A Jewish man would never address a woman in public.

  138. And in verse 27, his disciples were astonished that he'd been talking to her.

  139. But Jesus saw her.

  140. He saw and validated her need.

  141. He shows us that we're all in her place.

  142. Not just culturally, but actually without him.

  143. He came for us all.

  144. Now, when Jesus says, will he give me a drink?

  145. Do you think he's just asking for water?

  146. Honestly, I think he was actually thirsty for a drink.

  147. It's hot in that part of the world.

  148. Like, desert hot.

  149. Like, hotter than Sydney in the humidity in February.

  150. Hot.

  151. It is crazy hot there.

  152. And I bet Jesus knew a real human thirst.

  153. But he didn't thirst for God like we do.

  154. He knew God and was satisfied.

  155. He was drinking and eating like us while completely satisfied.

  156. In God.

  157. Jesus proved to this woman, 17 and 18, that's on the screen.

  158. He proved that he had access to God because he knows secrets about this woman that only God could know.

  159. Hidden things about her relationships.

  160. And we see later that that's proof for her.

  161. She says later, he told me everything about everything I'd ever done.

  162. He didn't.

  163. He gave her a short list of things that proved to her that he knew God.

  164. He is not thirsty like we are.

  165. But he is full of grace and mercy and compassion.

  166. He started the conversation that she could not start and that we can't.

  167. To show us that he offers us satisfaction.

  168. I've always been amazed at Jesus' ability with fasting and food.

  169. I can barely even make lunch for my kids with a full fridge of food.

  170. I'm useless when it comes to doing the simplest things like that.

  171. But Jesus can make food for 5,000 people.

  172. Bam!

  173. It's there.

  174. That's incredible.

  175. And he can go for weeks without eating.

  176. I can't go for more than about an hour and I feel like I'm going to die.

  177. But Jesus went weeks in the desert without food.

  178. It amazes me what physical needs Jesus could put aside while satisfied with God.

  179. He talks about it in verse 32.

  180. He says he has food that we don't understand.

  181. He is completely satisfied in God.

  182. But, and this is incredible.

  183. And if you're really tired, just catch this today because it's so incredible.

  184. He didn't hold on to that satisfaction.

  185. He actually gave it up so that we could have it.

  186. Look with me at John 19.

  187. It's going to be on the screen.

  188. Stay in John 4 on your tablet or your Bible.

  189. Look up here.

  190. Later, knowing this is Jesus on the cross.

  191. Later, knowing that everything had now been finished

  192. and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,

  193. Jesus said,

  194. I am thirsty.

  195. The God who was satisfied beyond needing anything at all,

  196. stooped down to identify with our needs and become a man

  197. and on the cross took on our thirst for God.

  198. I don't think he's saying,

  199. as he gasps for breath and bleeds out on the cross,

  200. I don't think he's saying,

  201. I'd really like a glass of cold water, guys.

  202. This sucks.

  203. He is putting his satisfaction in God aside

  204. as the Father turns his face away from him on the cross

  205. because he's wearing a sin.

  206. So we would never have to be thirsty and without God ever again.

  207. That is amazing.

  208. Jesus became thirsty for us

  209. so that he can offer us this drink

  210. that we hear about in John 4.

  211. Let's see what he's offering us exactly.

  212. John 4 verse 10.

    John 4:10

  213. Have a look with me.

  214. If you knew the gift of God

  215. and who it is that asks you for a drink,

  216. you would have asked him

  217. and he would have given you living water.

  218. Jump to verse 13.

  219. Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,

  220. but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.

  221. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them

  222. a spring of living water welling up to eternal life.

  223. Jesus was promising to quench this woman's thirst forever.

  224. What did he mean?

  225. It's clear in the story

  226. that the woman thought she knew what he meant.

  227. She asks for this mysterious water

  228. so she'd no longer have to go out every day

  229. and get water for herself.

  230. That's exactly what we would do.

  231. We would take our understanding of God

  232. and then demand it of him.

  233. Give me a drink, Jesus.

  234. She's thinking like Spielberg

  235. in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

  236. You know, the chase for the Holy Grail,

  237. the cup of Christ.

  238. Assuming that drinking from a cup that Jesus offered

  239. would keep us young and alive on earth.

  240. But Jesus is promising us so much more

  241. than something so silly as that.

  242. He's actually promising access to the living God,

  243. not just a long-term hydration solution,

  244. but a longer-than-life-long satisfaction.

  245. So how do I get this living water

  246. if it's not from a cup that Jesus offers?

  247. Not a literal cup.

  248. Look again at verse 10.

  249. Look at how it starts.

  250. It begins,

  251. if you knew.

  252. It seems that knowing God

  253. is the way to get this drink.

  254. The woman caught the cue

  255. about knowing God.

  256. When I read this passage,

  257. I didn't.

  258. I got really confused

  259. as to what this woman asked Jesus.

  260. If someone comes up to you,

  261. tells you all your hidden secrets

  262. of your life,

  263. and then kind of leaves

  264. the conversation open,

  265. you can ask them anything.

  266. What would you ask for?

  267. What answers to life

  268. would you demand from that person?

  269. And I'd probably say,

  270. how do I,

  271. you know,

  272. get more money?

  273. Or can you help me

  274. with all the stuff

  275. that I do wrong?

  276. Or can you help me?

  277. I've got a list of like

  278. a zillion practical things

  279. that I could think of.

  280. I want this,

  281. I want that,

  282. I want a guitar,

  283. I want my kids to be healthy,

  284. I want to be secure for life.

  285. But she gets this cue,

  286. she wants to know

  287. if she really knows God.

  288. She asks a religion question.

  289. I always found that really weird,

  290. but she gets this cue

  291. about knowing God.

  292. She was convinced

  293. about Jesus' connection.

  294. Why not see

  295. if she knows God

  296. like he does?

  297. So she asked him

  298. if Samaria's way

  299. of knowing God,

  300. their religious practices

  301. were correct.

  302. Because if they were right,

  303. then she'd already have access

  304. to this water, right?

  305. Right?

  306. Often people think

  307. that religion

  308. is about having our lives

  309. in order already

  310. to get us access to God.

  311. Surely Jesus will just

  312. tell us here

  313. who is right

  314. and who really knows him

  315. so we can all get on board

  316. with that one religion

  317. and then move on, right?

  318. No.

  319. He says it's no longer

  320. about how you get access

  321. to God,

  322. but who is

  323. your access to God.

  324. Not a list of things

  325. to do

  326. to know God.

  327. He

  328. is

  329. how we know God.

  330. He is

  331. our access to God

  332. and it's by his grace,

  333. not by what we do.

  334. He is offering

  335. to meet our greatest need

  336. in him.

  337. So let's look at

  338. Jesus' answer

  339. to our discontentedness.

  340. How will Jesus

  341. do for us

  342. what we need?

  343. And the answer

  344. is in two words,

  345. spirit

  346. and truth.

  347. Look at verse 21

  348. with me.

  349. It's going to be

  350. on the screen as well.

  351. Woman,

  352. Jesus replied,

  353. believe me,

  354. a time is coming

  355. when you will worship

  356. the Father

  357. neither on this mountain

  358. nor in Jerusalem.

  359. You Samaritans

  360. worship what you do not know.

  361. We worship what we do know

  362. for salvation

  363. comes from the Jews.

  364. Yet,

  365. a time is coming

  366. and has now come

  367. when the true worshippers

  368. will worship the Father

  369. in the spirit

  370. and in truth.

  371. for they are the kind

  372. of worshippers

  373. the Father seeks.

  374. God is spirit

  375. and his worshippers

  376. must worship

  377. in the spirit

  378. and in truth.

  379. In the spirit

  380. and in truth

  381. is Jesus'

  382. mysterious answer.

  383. It is

  384. how we can know

  385. God

  386. through him.

  387. So it's

  388. really important.

  389. These are the two

  390. things that we need

  391. to get satisfaction

  392. in God.

  393. So first,

  394. the spirit.

  395. God inflames

  396. our hearts

  397. to faith

  398. by the Holy Spirit.

  399. He confirms

  400. we're saved

  401. by the Holy Spirit's

  402. dwelling in us.

  403. He speaks

  404. through his word

  405. in the Bible

  406. by his spirit.

  407. And the spirit

  408. is a Christian's

  409. connection

  410. to God.

  411. The spirit

  412. does not let go.

  413. The Holy Spirit

  414. is like

  415. the hand

  416. that takes

  417. hold of ours

  418. and leads

  419. us to God.

  420. It is our

  421. constant comfort

  422. and assurance

  423. that we are saved.

  424. It's his grace

  425. in action

  426. drawing us

  427. to him.

  428. But it is

  429. the spirit

  430. and truth

  431. together

  432. that bring us

  433. to God.

  434. So

  435. the truth

  436. part of it

  437. sounds a little

  438. confusing.

  439. So let Jesus

  440. clarify it for you.

  441. Can we have

  442. John 14

  443. up on the screen?

  444. verse 6.

  445. I am the way

  446. the truth

  447. and the life.

  448. No one comes

  449. to the Father

  450. except

  451. through me.

  452. Jesus

  453. himself

  454. is

  455. the truth.

  456. Everything

  457. he was

  458. and said

  459. and achieved

  460. his life

  461. his death

  462. his resurrection

  463. it is all

  464. the truth.

  465. The truth

  466. is

  467. the gospel

  468. of Christ.

  469. All we know

  470. from him

  471. from the gospels.

  472. His perfect

  473. life for us

  474. that we might

  475. live.

  476. His death

  477. is an innocent

  478. man that he

  479. died for

  480. sinners.

  481. His resurrection

  482. that proves

  483. that Jesus

  484. won us

  485. a way

  486. back to God.

  487. The gospel

  488. is what Jesus

  489. came to live

  490. out so we

  491. could get

  492. God back.

  493. It's what we

  494. sang about

  495. in that first

  496. song

  497. from the

  498. squalor

  499. of a stable.

  500. virgin born

  501. walked our

  502. road

  503. felt our

  504. pain

  505. defeated

  506. death

  507. crowned

  508. with glory.

  509. So the

  510. truth

  511. is

  512. the whole

  513. gospel of

  514. Christ.

  515. So then

  516. we get

  517. God

  518. by the

  519. spirit

  520. by means

  521. of the

  522. gospel

  523. itself.

  524. The gospel

  525. is like

  526. an open

  527. door

  528. door.

  529. An open

  530. door

  531. to God

  532. and the

  533. spirit

  534. is like

  535. the hand

  536. that leads

  537. us through

  538. it.

  539. They go

  540. together

  541. to open

  542. access to

  543. God and

  544. to

  545. satisfaction.

  546. In spirit

  547. and in

  548. truth

  549. we are

  550. satisfied

  551. and connecting

  552. with God

  553. through the

  554. gospel by

  555. the spirit

  556. is drinking

  557. living water.

  558. It is that

  559. action.

  560. We can only

  561. come to

  562. God through

  563. the door

  564. of the

  565. gospel.

  566. We are not

  567. getting in

  568. any other

  569. way.

  570. And when we

  571. do, we

  572. revel in it

  573. and soak it

  574. up.

  575. We respond

  576. with prayers of

  577. thanksgiving and

  578. praise.

  579. Those overflow

  580. into singing

  581. and serving

  582. and loving

  583. and giving up

  584. our lives

  585. for the

  586. gospel.

  587. The gospel

  588. becomes our

  589. joy and

  590. our motivation.

  591. It becomes

  592. the source

  593. of our

  594. worship.

  595. But it is

  596. only by the

  597. spirit that we

  598. come at all.

  599. The spirit

  600. is our

  601. reminder of

  602. the gospel's

  603. effectiveness.

  604. The spirit

  605. speaks through

  606. God's word.

  607. The spirit

  608. inspires our

  609. prayers.

  610. The spirit

  611. guides us,

  612. inspires,

  613. upholds,

  614. holds,

  615. and remains

  616. with us.

  617. Together the

  618. gospel and

  619. spirit satisfy

  620. because through

  621. them, through

  622. the door, by

  623. the hand of

  624. God, we

  625. get God.

  626. And we

  627. know we're

  628. satisfied because

  629. our satisfaction

  630. overflows in

  631. worship.

  632. have you

  633. ever had a

  634. really nice

  635. cold drink of

  636. water on a

  637. sweltering day?

  638. For me, it's

  639. a cold beer

  640. with dinner

  641. because,

  642. honestly,

  643. that's as good

  644. as it gets

  645. for me.

  646. Do you know

  647. that elation,

  648. that

  649. after you've

  650. taken that

  651. first swallow?

  652. If I did

  653. that every

  654. night at

  655. dinner, I'd

  656. kind of get

  657. frowned on,

  658. but do you

  659. know that

  660. that

  661. is

  662. worship.

  663. Thankfulness,

  664. joy, and

  665. pleasure just

  666. erupt out of

  667. us.

  668. It's worship.

  669. We're responding

  670. to the

  671. satisfaction that

  672. we've found in

  673. the drink.

  674. the

  675. worshipers

  676. Jesus is

  677. after aren't

  678. doers of

  679. worship.

  680. No, Jesus

  681. was the

  682. doer for

  683. us, and

  684. now is our

  685. reason to

  686. worship.

  687. We're

  688. responders in

  689. worship, and

  690. can you see

  691. how that

  692. undoes the

  693. woman's

  694. expectations?

  695. The

  696. ah

  697. isn't a

  698. set way of

  699. doing church

  700. or life.

  701. It's entirely

  702. dependent and

  703. responsive to

  704. his provision

  705. for us.

  706. That

  707. ah

  708. is the

  709. mark of

  710. our

  711. satisfaction

  712. in Jesus.

  713. There's got

  714. to be some

  715. sort of

  716. response that

  717. has to be

  718. part of

  719. our every

  720. day.

  721. It's got

  722. to be the

  723. boldest

  724. colour of

  725. our Sunday

  726. services.

  727. if we

  728. don't

  729. look

  730. satisfied,

  731. are we?

  732. Jesus'

  733. offer to

  734. come and

  735. drink is

  736. open to

  737. you.

  738. Be

  739. satisfied

  740. once and

  741. for all.

  742. Jesus'

  743. offer does

  744. satisfy once

  745. for all.

  746. I've got to be

  747. honest, life

  748. stays hard.

  749. We're sinful

  750. and we're

  751. still kind of

  752. yearning for

  753. something.

  754. As a

  755. Christian, the

  756. yearning is

  757. still there.

  758. The

  759. discontentedness

  760. often remains.

  761. Does that

  762. mean that

  763. Jesus hasn't

  764. satisfied us?

  765. No.

  766. He has.

  767. But we

  768. yearn and

  769. hurt and

  770. struggle and

  771. even doubt

  772. because we're

  773. waiting for a

  774. final satisfaction

  775. in eternity

  776. with God.

  777. And we're

  778. not there

  779. yet.

  780. But we

  781. have the

  782. glorious

  783. opportunity to

  784. go there

  785. every day

  786. and drink.

  787. The

  788. gospel

  789. is there

  790. to satisfy

  791. us

  792. ongoing

  793. every day.

  794. Look,

  795. cover to

  796. cover,

  797. this thing

  798. is all

  799. the water

  800. you will

  801. ever need

  802. ever.

  803. that's

  804. what you

  805. need to

  806. survive as

  807. a Christian.

  808. Everything in

  809. here points

  810. to Jesus,

  811. it's about

  812. Jesus and

  813. it's leading

  814. us to look

  815. forward to

  816. an eternity

  817. with him.

  818. It provides

  819. our hope in

  820. hurt and

  821. struggle and

  822. turns back the

  823. strongest doubts

  824. and fears.

  825. This good

  826. news, this

  827. gospel, this

  828. word of God

  829. is there every

  830. day for us as

  831. a reminder of

  832. Jesus'

  833. provision for

  834. us.

  835. But as

  836. Christians, we

  837. still don't

  838. always drink from

  839. satisfying the

  840. satisfying source of

  841. the gospel.

  842. We go elsewhere.

  843. I still stand

  844. over an empty

  845. fridge and wonder

  846. why I'm standing

  847. there.

  848. We still go in

  849. all the wrong

  850. directions, chasing

  851. desires.

  852. We go to money

  853. and to power and

  854. to other stuff

  855. that will not

  856. last.

  857. And as a

  858. Christian, if

  859. you aren't

  860. drinking regularly,

  861. you're needlessly

  862. thirsty and

  863. missing out on

  864. joy that Jesus

  865. is offering you.

  866. Doubt and

  867. pain and fear

  868. and uncertainty

  869. get continually

  870. pushed aside

  871. when we drink.

  872. So why don't

  873. we do that?

  874. Why don't we

  875. drink a little

  876. together?

  877. Look with me

  878. at the

  879. culmination of

  880. the gospel's

  881. promises to

  882. us, to the

  883. end of our

  884. thirst, the

  885. satisfaction of

  886. eternity with

  887. Jesus.

  888. Guys, this is

  889. the hope for

  890. every Christian.

  891. Never again

  892. will they

  893. hunger.

  894. Never again

  895. will they

  896. thirst.

  897. The sun will

  898. not beat down

  899. on them, nor

  900. any scorching

  901. heat, for the

  902. lambs at the

  903. centre of the

  904. throne will be

  905. their shepherd.

  906. He will lead

  907. them to springs

  908. of living water

  909. and God will

  910. wipe away

  911. every tear

  912. from their

  913. eyes.

  914. Compare

  915. our

  916. discontented

  917. cries from

  918. earlier.

  919. I'd be

  920. satisfied if

  921. only I had.

  922. I'd be

  923. satisfied.

  924. That

  925. discontentedness

  926. is, how

  927. does that

  928. compare to

  929. how you

  930. are lifted

  931. up and

  932. given joy

  933. by what is

  934. there in

  935. Revelation 7?

  936. Does your

  937. lack of

  938. satisfaction

  939. now pale in

  940. comparison to

  941. how you

  942. yearn for what

  943. God will have

  944. in store in

  945. the future

  946. for you?

  947. That Jesus

  948. himself will

  949. be leading

  950. us, feeding

  951. us, and

  952. wiping away

  953. our tears?

  954. things.

  955. And the

  956. heat of the

  957. day and

  958. struggle will

  959. soon be over

  960. and we will

  961. thirst no

  962. more.

  963. That picture is

  964. complete

  965. satisfaction.

  966. Revelation 7

  967. is what we

  968. are thirsting

  969. toward.

  970. And we're

  971. crazy if we

  972. do not come to

  973. the Spirit and

  974. the truth of

  975. the gospel to

  976. drink.

  977. guys, in

  978. the last

  979. few weeks,

  980. friends of

  981. mine and

  982. Sam's lost

  983. their baby at

  984. 30 weeks of

  985. pregnancy.

  986. It was a

  987. shock and it

  988. was awful.

  989. A guy I

  990. went to

  991. college with

  992. this week

  993. actually committed

  994. suicide and

  995. it's devastated

  996. everyone I

  997. knew at

  998. college.

  999. We've got a

  1000. church member,

  1001. 530 member,

  1002. staring death in

  1003. the face,

  1004. fighting cancer

  1005. right now,

  1006. tonight.

  1007. How do

  1008. those involved

  1009. in this stuff

  1010. get satisfied

  1011. in God while

  1012. life serves up

  1013. this mess?

  1014. How do we

  1015. stay satisfied

  1016. while we're

  1017. watching it?

  1018. By the

  1019. Spirit of

  1020. God, through

  1021. the truth of

  1022. the gospel,

  1023. Christ.

  1024. And if we

  1025. go anywhere

  1026. else, we're

  1027. drinking dust.

  1028. And it's

  1029. going to leave

  1030. us empty.

  1031. As the band

  1032. come up right

  1033. now, soon

  1034. we're going to

  1035. sing together

  1036. and respond to

  1037. what we just

  1038. drank in

  1039. Revelation 7.

  1040. But before we

  1041. sing, remember,

  1042. we will

  1043. go to the

  1044. God.

  1045. We will

  1046. be satisfied

  1047. in God.

  1048. Jesus offers

  1049. satisfaction free

  1050. to anyone.

  1051. No matter who

  1052. you are, he

  1053. offers it now,

  1054. once, and

  1055. every day, and

  1056. on into

  1057. eternity.

  1058. And if you

  1059. find discontent

  1060. in you now,

  1061. and it's

  1062. still raging,

  1063. as a

  1064. Christian,

  1065. already knowing

  1066. satisfaction, yet

  1067. struggling,

  1068. know he is

  1069. ready to deal

  1070. with your

  1071. discontent by

  1072. the Spirit and

  1073. by the means of

  1074. the gospel.

  1075. And this,

  1076. he took your

  1077. discontent,

  1078. thirst, and

  1079. yearning for

  1080. God, and he

  1081. wore it on the

  1082. cross, so you

  1083. never have to.

  1084. You can have

  1085. satisfaction now,

  1086. and you can have

  1087. it forever, by

  1088. the Spirit, by the

  1089. means of the

  1090. gospel and his

  1091. word.

  1092. So let's come to

  1093. God by his

  1094. grace, by his

  1095. spirit through the

  1096. gospel, come as

  1097. thirsty people, and

  1098. get satisfied.
