  1. One television personality who was having a pretty rough year found out on the same day

  2. that she was losing her TV show and that her husband was leaving her.

  3. She responded, I know the Lord won't send me more trouble than I have the strength to bear,

  4. but I do wish he didn't have such a good opinion of me.

  5. Many of us might know that feeling.

  6. I've heard people say on a number of occasions over the years

  7. that the things that have really happened to me lately have really shaken my faith.

  8. That is, at times when there's bereavement, serious illness, times of tragedy,

  9. or even just a whole string of negative things happening,

  10. it's hard to believe in a God who is love and a God who is in charge or rules the world,

  11. as we sang tonight, God who is sovereign.

  12. And it is an important thought.

  13. It's a really serious question.

  14. Many sceptics would say that belief in an all-loving and an all-powerful God

  15. is just simply wishful thinking.

  16. You can't have both of those things together in the world in which we live.

  17. Some even go as far as saying that they refuse to believe in such a God

  18. unless that particular God was to turn up and to fix certain things in their life.

  19. And the assumption is that God has to think like I do about the world

  20. and solve my problems or the world's problems in the way that I think that they should be solved.

  21. Now, I get why we might say that,

  22. and I get the feeling behind that and the sentiment behind that,

  23. but in the end it would be a pretty benign God

  24. if that God was limited to my understanding of the world

  25. and how I think things should be fixed in the world.

  26. Over the next number of weeks,

  27. we're going to go back two and a half thousand years

  28. into the book of Esther,

  29. which we're just looking at now.

  30. It was read out a couple of chapters just then.

  31. Here, two and a half thousand years ago,

  32. is one of the most perilous times for the people of God.

  33. They are on the brink of extermination.

  34. And on the surface, when you read those first couple of chapters,

  35. it appears that this is one of those Cinderella stories.

  36. You know, orphan girl rises to be the queen of Persia,

  37. most powerful nation in the world at its time.

  38. But it's actually not the thrust of the story.

  39. It's actually about how God saves his people from the brink of disaster.

  40. And yet, there is no mention of God in the book of Esther at all.

  41. Not once.

  42. Kind of strange, really,

  43. when it's about God rescuing his people from the brink of disaster.

  44. So why is that?

  45. Why is God not mentioned in this book?

  46. Now, I'm pretty sure it's not an oversight.

  47. It's not like the writer got to the end, full stop,

  48. and went, oh, my hat, I forgot to mention God.

  49. I don't think that's the case.

  50. I think the writer here is making a point.

  51. And I think, let me just try and explain this.

  52. You see, whenever the God of Israel saw his people in trouble in the past,

  53. he comes to their aid through extraordinary ways.

  54. The events are extraordinary.

  55. But in Esther, there's no mighty miracle.

  56. There's no vision.

  57. There's not even a dream.

  58. God appears to be absent here in this book.

  59. Totally silent.

  60. There are, however, this whole string of apparent coincidences.

  61. They all happened at the right time.

  62. And if they hadn't have happened, the Jews would have been wiped out.

  63. But they all happened in the right sequence at the right time.

  64. And they were saved.

  65. If Xerxes, just from chapter one and two,

  66. if Xerxes had not gotten drunk and he had not made that boast,

  67. if that hadn't happened, Vashti would still be queen.

  68. And Esther wouldn't have been queen.

  69. And she couldn't have used her influence to save the Jews.

  70. What if, for instance, Esther hadn't been pretty?

  71. What if the king favoured one of the other girls?

  72. The whole narrative all the way through is,

  73. what if, what if, what if, what if?

  74. And all of them are just these ordinary little things, everyday life.

  75. And by themselves, they don't seem to be significant at all.

  76. And here's the point that I think is underlying here through Esther.

  77. When you see one of the ten plagues in Exodus,

  78. where God uses his mighty power to rescue his people from Egypt,

  79. and you see his hand at work, you go,

  80. oh, that's God.

  81. Yeah.

  82. Extraordinary.

  83. When you see the king drunk,

  84. you don't go, oh, wow, God at work.

  85. You just don't make that connection.

  86. Esther is telling us, I think,

  87. when you put it all together,

  88. don't make the same mistake.

  89. Don't make the mistake of the materialist

  90. who judges situations based on what they see

  91. and what they feel

  92. and what they can experience firsthand.

  93. We may not see God at work,

  94. but that doesn't mean he's not.

  95. God's silence is not his absence.

  96. His hiddenness is not his abandonment.

  97. God is not obsessed with appearances the way that we are.

  98. He's working out his promises even when it appears that he's not even around.

  99. That's one of the underlying themes right through Esther.

  100. There are things going on for us,

  101. even for us right now,

  102. things going on for us in our lives

  103. that we're looking right at,

  104. things that God is doing,

  105. and they seem so ordinary

  106. and we have got no idea,

  107. which is why that graphic that Yui put together

  108. is just so brilliant.

  109. Did you notice the invisible hands under the woman?

  110. Ooh, it all makes sense.

  111. And even in the ugliness of these first two chapters,

  112. and frankly, they are ugly,

  113. there's a whole lot wrong here.

  114. God is at work.

  115. He's even using flawed and failed

  116. and questionable people like Esther and Xerxes

  117. to bring about his plans and his purposes.

  118. So let's just launch straight in on chapters one and two.

  119. The book of Esther,

  120. if you've got your Bibles open,

  121. begins introducing us to the great empire of King Xerxes I.

  122. It says,

  123. notice how it reads, it says,

  124. verse one,

  125. this is what happened during the time of Xerxes.

  126. And you say,

  127. Xerxes?

  128. Which Xerxes?

  129. And he says,

  130. well,

  131. the Xerxes have ruled over 127 provinces

  132. stretching from India to Kush.

  133. He reigned from 486 BC

  134. to 465 BC.

  135. And his empire included the north-western part of India,

  136. Pakistan,

  137. Afghanistan,

  138. Uzbekistan,

  139. Iran,

  140. Iraq,

  141. Armenia,

  142. Azerbaijan,

  143. Syria,

  144. Lebanon,

  145. Israel,

  146. Jordan,

  147. Turkey,

  148. northern Greece,

  149. Egypt,

  150. Libya,

  151. Eritrea,

  152. Ethiopia,

  153. and Sudan.

  154. a pretty big area he covered.

  155. There was no person more powerful,

  156. more greater on the face of the earth at the time,

  157. and he knew it.

  158. He was not a modest man.

  159. Sort of like the first president of Tunisia,

  160. Habib Burugibi,

  161. he once explained to his National Assembly

  162. that leadership abilities such as his were,

  163. and I quote,

  164. a miracle of nature

  165. that rarely occurs in our history.

  166. Do you like that modesty?

  167. Isn't that nice?

  168. He was also asked once,

  169. so what's the Tunisian system of government?

  170. System of government?

  171. I am the system of government.

  172. Isn't that a modest sort of man?

  173. So Xerxes is that kind of guy,

  174. and he holds a party for all of his main men

  175. throughout his whole empire

  176. so he can show off how great he is.

  177. It's a party,

  178. verse 4,

  179. in chapter 1,

  180. that says,

  181. it went on for a full 180 days.

  182. He displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom

  183. and the splendour and glory of his majesty.

  184. He got all of his wealth,

  185. all of his possessions,

  186. his livestock and all that sort of stuff,

  187. and he's in the big banqueting hall

  188. with all his head honchos,

  189. and it's just,

  190. he's marching it through the banquet hall.

  191. And it took six months

  192. from the beginning to the end

  193. for all of his possessions and wealth

  194. to be shown off to all his mates.

  195. And at the time,

  196. they're sitting there drinking wine.

  197. It's no wonder he got drunk.

  198. Six months of it.

  199. We are meant to gaze wide-eyed here

  200. at the gold and the silver and the jewels

  201. and the sheer accumulation of wealth and power

  202. in exactly the same way

  203. that Alexander the Great did

  204. when a hundred years,

  205. just about a hundred years later,

  206. he went into the citadel of Susa

  207. and he discovered

  208. over one and a half tonnes of gold alone,

  209. let alone the piles of silver

  210. and the jewels and everything else.

  211. And Alexander the Great looked at it

  212. and went,

  213. my goodness.

  214. Even Alexander the Great

  215. was impressed by this guy.

  216. So,

  217. we read the first few verses

  218. and we go,

  219. who's the main man?

  220. Who's in control here?

  221. Who's in charge?

  222. Xerxes

  223. except he's got a woman.

  224. Queen Vashti.

  225. Now,

  226. she has been given

  227. a separate banquet

  228. over here for the ladies.

  229. And as there are no ladies

  230. to civilise

  231. the men,

  232. Xerxes' party

  233. gets out of control.

  234. Verse 10,

  235. Xerxes is in high spirits

  236. from wine.

  237. I think that's meant

  238. to be an understatement there.

  239. The guys had one too many

  240. for sure.

  241. And he decides

  242. it's time

  243. not just to show off

  244. all of his wealth

  245. and all of his splendour

  246. and all of his majesty

  247. and all of his power,

  248. he wants to show

  249. his mates

  250. that he's also married

  251. to the best looking woman

  252. in the world.

  253. So,

  254. verse 11,

  255. he says,

  256. bring Vashti out

  257. wearing a royal crown

  258. in order to display

  259. her beauty

  260. to the people

  261. and the nobles

  262. for she was lovely

  263. to look at.

  264. He's not wanting

  265. to show Vashti off.

  266. He's not wanting

  267. them to meet her,

  268. to be friends with her,

  269. to see whether

  270. she's got a personality

  271. or anything like that.

  272. It's,

  273. bring her out

  274. so that my drunken mates

  275. can drool over her

  276. and gawk at her.

  277. Now,

  278. for reasons

  279. that the text

  280. doesn't explain,

  281. she decides

  282. that that's not

  283. a great idea.

  284. I mean,

  285. it's not hard

  286. to imagine why.

  287. She refuses

  288. to come

  289. and that act

  290. in itself

  291. is an act

  292. of incredible bravery.

  293. in a hierarchical

  294. shame

  295. and honour culture

  296. for an authority

  297. like Xerxes

  298. to be rejected

  299. was a cultural crisis.

  300. and this king

  301. is furious

  302. with his queen

  303. but instead

  304. of marriage counselling

  305. he has a cabinet meeting

  306. to work out

  307. what to do

  308. with her.

  309. And of course

  310. he pulls in

  311. all the nobles,

  312. all the head honchos,

  313. they're all concerned

  314. as well

  315. because what if

  316. Vashti sends

  317. a priest in here

  318. and our wives

  319. do the same thing?

  320. Anarchy will reign,

  321. we'll get a bit

  322. of pushback

  323. from our wives.

  324. The outcome

  325. of it all

  326. is that Vashti's

  327. banished

  328. a royal decree

  329. went to the whole

  330. kingdom

  331. in all different

  332. languages

  333. from India

  334. right through

  335. to Sudan

  336. so that everyone

  337. heard it

  338. in their language

  339. all the women

  340. will respect

  341. their husbands

  342. from the least

  343. to the greatest.

  344. What an idiot.

  345. What an incredible

  346. comical

  347. overreaction.

  348. a drunken

  349. reaction

  350. and then

  351. beginning of chapter

  352. two the grog's

  353. worn off

  354. so Xerxes wakes

  355. up with a headache

  356. and did I do

  357. that?

  358. Yes you did.

  359. And he just

  360. realises

  361. that Vashti

  362. the most beautiful

  363. woman that he'd

  364. ever met

  365. is never to

  366. approach him

  367. again

  368. ever.

  369. and so he

  370. needs a new

  371. trophy wife

  372. and the whole

  373. kingdom is

  374. searched for

  375. the best

  376. looking woman.

  377. Chapter two

  378. verse eight

  379. suggests that

  380. they weren't

  381. invited to

  382. apply

  383. they were

  384. picked

  385. and they

  386. were taken.

  387. I mean

  388. you couldn't

  389. imagine

  390. too many

  391. clear

  392. thinking

  393. women

  394. wanting to

  395. marry a guy

  396. like Xerxes

  397. could you?

  398. Although

  399. Donald Trump

  400. seems to be

  401. sorry

  402. and so

  403. we have

  404. international

  405. beauty pageant

  406. Miss Persian

  407. Empire

  408. 482 BC

  409. some scholars

  410. have suggested

  411. there is many

  412. 1,000

  413. virgins

  414. were brought

  415. back to the

  416. king's

  417. harem.

  418. and then

  419. for a year

  420. they underwent

  421. beauty treatments

  422. and they were

  423. in training

  424. to get ready

  425. for one night

  426. with the

  427. king.

  428. Everything

  429. turned on

  430. that one

  431. night with

  432. the king

  433. and depending

  434. on how it

  435. went there

  436. were only

  437. four possible

  438. outcomes

  439. only four

  440. number one

  441. is that

  442. in the morning

  443. he goes

  444. I didn't

  445. really like

  446. her

  447. and he

  448. would

  449. send

  450. the

  451. girl away

  452. to be a

  453. permanent

  454. concubine

  455. but he

  456. would never

  457. ever

  458. ever

  459. call on

  460. her again

  461. and at

  462. an age

  463. of 18

  464. or 19

  465. they were

  466. essentially

  467. banished

  468. to permanent

  469. widowhood

  470. they were

  471. never ever

  472. to be allowed

  473. with another

  474. man

  475. no marriage

  476. no children

  477. no nothing

  478. permanent

  479. banishment

  480. no

  481. second

  482. option

  483. was

  484. he might

  485. say

  486. actually

  487. I don't

  488. mind

  489. that

  490. one

  491. she would

  492. become a

  493. concubine

  494. and occasionally

  495. at his whim

  496. and his will

  497. and depending

  498. on how much

  499. wine he's

  500. had

  501. he would

  502. call on

  503. her

  504. third

  505. option

  506. is

  507. if he

  508. you know

  509. if you're

  510. really

  511. really

  512. really

  513. lucky

  514. you might

  515. be one

  516. of the

  517. two or

  518. three

  519. that would

  520. go on

  521. the list

  522. that I

  523. might marry

  524. this one

  525. and then

  526. your children

  527. would be

  528. inheritors

  529. of royal

  530. stuff

  531. number

  532. four

  533. if you

  534. are super

  535. fortunate

  536. and you're

  537. the one

  538. that he

  539. most favours

  540. you became

  541. the queen

  542. and the

  543. other

  544. 999

  545. weren't

  546. now one

  547. of the girls

  548. who was

  549. taken was

  550. a Jewish

  551. orphan named

  552. Esther

  553. and when

  554. they took

  555. her

  556. her older

  557. cousin

  558. Mordecai

  559. instructed her

  560. not to say

  561. anything

  562. about her

  563. Jewish

  564. identity

  565. or about

  566. her beliefs

  567. she was

  568. the one

  569. Xerxes

  570. favoured

  571. above all

  572. of the rest

  573. he married

  574. her and he

  575. made her

  576. his queen

  577. the Jewish

  578. orphan girl

  579. becomes the

  580. queen of

  581. the greatest

  582. empire

  583. of the face

  584. of the earth

  585. so what's

  586. going on

  587. here

  588. what's

  589. going on

  590. this is not

  591. marriage advice

  592. so let me

  593. just take that

  594. bit out

  595. it's not

  596. marriage advice

  597. it's not

  598. how to hook

  599. up and

  600. not any

  601. of that

  602. sort of

  603. stuff

  604. not dating

  605. advice

  606. in Persian

  607. culture

  608. the most

  609. important

  610. thing

  611. about a

  612. man

  613. is his

  614. wealth

  615. and his

  616. power

  617. and the

  618. most

  619. important

  620. thing

  621. about a

  622. woman

  623. is her

  624. sexual

  625. and physical

  626. beauty

  627. a man's

  628. worth was

  629. determined by

  630. the size

  631. of his

  632. wallet

  633. and how

  634. big his

  635. muscles

  636. were

  637. and a

  638. woman's

  639. worth was

  640. determined by

  641. the size

  642. of her

  643. dress

  644. isn't it

  645. ugly

  646. when you

  647. realise

  648. that's

  649. what's

  650. going on

  651. in here

  652. in

  653. S's

  654. one and

  655. two

  656. isn't

  657. that

  658. ugly

  659. the way

  660. that people

  661. are treated

  662. look at

  663. the way

  664. these women

  665. are treated

  666. look at

  667. the pride

  668. and the

  669. arrogance

  670. of this

  671. bloke

  672. Xerxes

  673. wouldn't

  674. it just

  675. be

  676. absolutely

  677. terrible

  678. to live

  679. in a

  680. culture

  681. that judged

  682. people like

  683. that

  684. and treated

  685. people like

  686. that

  687. aren't you

  688. glad that

  689. we don't

  690. live back

  691. then

  692. two and a

  693. half thousand

  694. years ago

  695. with all

  696. the superficial

  697. differences

  698. what's

  699. changed

  700. what's

  701. really

  702. changed

  703. the world's

  704. the same

  705. it says

  706. external

  707. image

  708. appearances

  709. matter more

  710. than your

  711. character

  712. what you

  713. have

  714. matters more

  715. than what

  716. you are

  717. beauty

  718. talent

  719. money

  720. connections

  721. influence

  722. matters more

  723. than what

  724. you are

  725. and what

  726. our culture

  727. says is that

  728. you must

  729. undergo

  730. beauty

  731. treatments

  732. not just

  733. the women

  734. our culture

  735. says that

  736. unless you

  737. get these

  738. credentials

  739. this kind

  740. of beauty

  741. this kind

  742. of money

  743. this kind

  744. of resume

  745. this kind

  746. of education

  747. this kind

  748. of job

  749. unless you

  750. get these

  751. things

  752. you don't

  753. really amount

  754. to much

  755. you're not

  756. really worth

  757. much

  758. it says it

  759. differently to

  760. men and to

  761. women

  762. and to

  763. different races

  764. and to

  765. different

  766. classes

  767. but it's

  768. basically saying

  769. the same

  770. thing

  771. it's saying

  772. that you

  773. need to

  774. go through

  775. the beauty

  776. treatments of

  777. this world

  778. you need to

  779. perform

  780. you need to

  781. do all

  782. this

  783. and if

  784. you do

  785. then we

  786. just might

  787. accept you

  788. we might

  789. approve of

  790. you

  791. that's all

  792. of us

  793. we live

  794. we live

  795. in a world

  796. of appearances

  797. and performance

  798. we elevate

  799. the trivial

  800. in our

  801. culture

  802. whole magazines

  803. are devoted

  804. to the antics

  805. of soap opera

  806. stars

  807. and we pay

  808. incredible amounts

  809. of money

  810. to grown men

  811. who hit little

  812. balls around

  813. we live in a

  814. culture that

  815. considers the car

  816. we drive as an

  817. extension of who

  818. we are

  819. we're more

  820. impressed by the

  821. school that

  822. someone attends

  823. than what

  824. they're actually

  825. learning at

  826. the school

  827. we blow it

  828. just like

  829. these couple

  830. of chapters

  831. in Esther

  832. we blow it

  833. just like

  834. Esther does

  835. herself

  836. and most

  837. scholars agree

  838. that in these

  839. first couple

  840. of chapters

  841. here

  842. Esther has

  843. completely

  844. sold out

  845. to the

  846. culture

  847. she's not

  848. a hero

  849. here

  850. she gets

  851. to her

  852. pinnacle

  853. through absolute

  854. compliance

  855. she does

  856. what Mordecai

  857. says

  858. she listens

  859. to the head

  860. guy in the

  861. harem more

  862. than any

  863. other woman

  864. there

  865. she did

  866. everything

  867. that he

  868. asked

  869. Esther plays

  870. the Barbie

  871. doll

  872. here

  873. she's the

  874. sex kitten

  875. here

  876. she's a

  877. blank page

  878. on which

  879. these men

  880. write what

  881. they want

  882. and she's

  883. the total

  884. opposite

  885. of Daniel

  886. and his

  887. friends

  888. you see

  889. when they

  890. were brought

  891. into the

  892. pagan

  893. court

  894. they said

  895. up front

  896. that we're

  897. here

  898. we will

  899. serve

  900. but we

  901. will follow

  902. God's

  903. dietary

  904. requirements

  905. they let

  906. everyone

  907. know that

  908. they were

  909. Jews

  910. and were

  911. still going

  912. to follow

  913. God's

  914. law

  915. Esther

  916. kept

  917. that stuff

  918. secret

  919. and she

  920. must have

  921. broken

  922. law

  923. after law

  924. after law

  925. and then

  926. she sleeps

  927. with a man

  928. who she's

  929. not married

  930. to and then

  931. she marries

  932. an unbeliever

  933. all were

  934. gross violations

  935. of the

  936. biblical law

  937. she's

  938. completely

  939. sold out

  940. but what

  941. is great

  942. about Esther

  943. is that

  944. although

  945. there is

  946. this bad

  947. start

  948. by the end

  949. she's the

  950. brave heart

  951. God works

  952. with her

  953. God is

  954. patient with

  955. her and

  956. grows her

  957. and turns

  958. her into

  959. something great

  960. and the

  961. reason why

  962. that is so

  963. important is

  964. that no matter

  965. how bad

  966. you have

  967. screwed up

  968. at the

  969. beginning of

  970. your life

  971. no matter

  972. what terrible

  973. moves you've

  974. made and

  975. things that

  976. you've done

  977. you can never

  978. write yourself

  979. out of God's

  980. final script

  981. the good

  982. news is

  983. and this is

  984. the message

  985. of the Bible

  986. is that

  987. God does

  988. not bless

  989. those and

  990. save those

  991. who live

  992. moral and

  993. exemplary

  994. lives

  995. that's not

  996. what God

  997. does

  998. the message

  999. of the Bible

  1000. is that God

  1001. persistently and

  1002. continuously gives

  1003. his grace to

  1004. people who don't

  1005. ask for it

  1006. don't deserve

  1007. it and don't

  1008. fully appreciate

  1009. it when they

  1010. receive it

  1011. despite of

  1012. the fact

  1013. that we

  1014. are

  1015. into a

  1016. great degree

  1017. influenced by

  1018. our systems

  1019. our culture's

  1020. systems of

  1021. values and

  1022. morals

  1023. God hasn't

  1024. given up on

  1025. us

  1026. 1 Samuel 16

  1027. says that man

  1028. looks at the

  1029. outward appearance

  1030. but God looks

  1031. at the heart

  1032. you see real

  1033. beauty is

  1034. different than

  1035. what this world

  1036. says it is

  1037. unlike God

  1038. we judge

  1039. books by

  1040. their cover

  1041. God doesn't

  1042. do that

  1043. our world is

  1044. like this

  1045. chauvinistic

  1046. tyrant

  1047. Xerxes and

  1048. it says to us

  1049. I'll accept you

  1050. as my bride

  1051. but you have

  1052. to work

  1053. incredibly hard

  1054. and you have

  1055. to make

  1056. yourself attractive

  1057. and you have

  1058. to come up

  1059. with an

  1060. incredible

  1061. resume and

  1062. make yourself

  1063. lovable and

  1064. then I might

  1065. approve of you

  1066. then I might

  1067. approve of you

  1068. and it is

  1069. exhausting

  1070. it is

  1071. crushing

  1072. and there's

  1073. only one way

  1074. out

  1075. God says

  1076. over and

  1077. over again

  1078. to us

  1079. in the

  1080. Bible

  1081. that he

  1082. wants to

  1083. be our

  1084. spouse

  1085. he's not

  1086. just the

  1087. all powerful

  1088. king

  1089. but the

  1090. all loving

  1091. husband

  1092. what makes

  1093. it so great

  1094. is that it's

  1095. not about

  1096. what we have

  1097. to do

  1098. to make

  1099. ourselves

  1100. so lovable

  1101. and good

  1102. and worthy

  1103. God is

  1104. the exact

  1105. opposite

  1106. of Xerxes

  1107. Esther

  1108. doesn't have

  1109. a great

  1110. start here

  1111. and yet

  1112. God has

  1113. got her

  1114. by the

  1115. hand

  1116. God

  1117. never gives

  1118. up on her

  1119. as this

  1120. book unfolds

  1121. God is

  1122. patient with

  1123. her

  1124. he loves

  1125. her

  1126. and he

  1127. turns her

  1128. into something

  1129. great

  1130. and that

  1131. is the

  1132. foretaste

  1133. of the

  1134. relationship

  1135. with Jesus

  1136. that Ephesians

  1137. 5 talks

  1138. about

  1139. Ephesians

  1140. 5 uses

  1141. the image

  1142. of the

  1143. loving

  1144. husband

  1145. this is

  1146. the way

  1147. God

  1148. treats

  1149. us

  1150. it says

  1151. husbands

  1152. love your

  1153. wives

  1154. just as

  1155. Christ

  1156. loved

  1157. the

  1158. church

  1159. and gave

  1160. himself

  1161. up for

  1162. her

  1163. to make

  1164. her

  1165. holy

  1166. cleansing

  1167. her by

  1168. the washing

  1169. with water

  1170. through the

  1171. word

  1172. and to

  1173. present

  1174. her to

  1175. himself

  1176. as a

  1177. radiant

  1178. church

  1179. without

  1180. stain

  1181. or wrinkle

  1182. or any

  1183. other

  1184. blemish

  1185. but holy

  1186. and blameless

  1187. that's what

  1188. Jesus does

  1189. for us

  1190. Esther

  1191. was accepted

  1192. by Xerxes

  1193. because

  1194. she was

  1195. already

  1196. beautiful

  1197. but Jesus

  1198. loves us

  1199. in spite of

  1200. our flaws

  1201. and our sin

  1202. and our

  1203. ugliness

  1204. in order

  1205. to make

  1206. us beautiful

  1207. Esther

  1208. had to

  1209. give her

  1210. life and

  1211. her freedom

  1212. up for

  1213. the king

  1214. but Jesus

  1215. is the

  1216. only king

  1217. the only

  1218. spouse

  1219. who gives

  1220. up his

  1221. life and

  1222. his freedom

  1223. for us

  1224. he gives

  1225. up everything

  1226. for us

  1227. not because

  1228. we are

  1229. lovely

  1230. but in

  1231. order to

  1232. make us

  1233. lovely

  1234. in order

  1235. to make

  1236. us beautiful

  1237. and when

  1238. we understand

  1239. that

  1240. when that

  1241. shift

  1242. happens

  1243. I think

  1244. we have

  1245. the three

  1246. things that

  1247. we need

  1248. to be

  1249. free from

  1250. our cultures

  1251. enslavement

  1252. to

  1253. external

  1254. appearance

  1255. and

  1256. performance

  1257. firstly

  1258. when you

  1259. understand

  1260. what Jesus

  1261. has done

  1262. for you

  1263. you get

  1264. a real

  1265. definition

  1266. of beauty

  1267. our culture's

  1268. definition of

  1269. beauty means

  1270. that we

  1271. cannot go

  1272. by a

  1273. mirror

  1274. without

  1275. noticing

  1276. ourselves

  1277. selfie

  1278. culture has

  1279. dominated

  1280. Facebook

  1281. but then

  1282. we see

  1283. Jesus

  1284. and

  1285. he

  1286. had

  1287. ultimate

  1288. beauty

  1289. infinite

  1290. glory

  1291. infinite

  1292. splendour

  1293. infinite

  1294. majesty

  1295. and he

  1296. laid it

  1297. to one

  1298. side

  1299. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1300. chapter 2

  1301. sorry

  1302. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1303. chapter 2

  1304. he laid

  1305. it to one

  1306. side

  1307. gave it

  1308. all up

  1309. he became

  1310. human and

  1311. he went

  1312. to the

  1313. cross

  1314. the book

  1315. of Isaiah

  1316. says

  1317. talking about

  1318. him being

  1319. on the

  1320. cross

  1321. it says

  1322. he had

  1323. no beauty

  1324. that we

  1325. should desire

  1326. him

  1327. he became

  1328. cosmically

  1329. unsightly

  1330. his father

  1331. turns his

  1332. face away

  1333. Jesus gave

  1334. up his

  1335. splendour

  1336. his majesty

  1337. and his

  1338. beauty

  1339. for us

  1340. that is

  1341. true beauty

  1342. genuine

  1343. beauty is

  1344. not self

  1345. obsession

  1346. it is

  1347. self

  1348. sacrifice

  1349. that's the

  1350. new

  1351. definition

  1352. of beauty

  1353. you get

  1354. from Jesus

  1355. the second

  1356. thing we

  1357. get when

  1358. we understand

  1359. that Jesus

  1360. gives up

  1361. everything

  1362. for us

  1363. to make

  1364. us beautiful

  1365. in his

  1366. sight

  1367. is a new

  1368. experience

  1369. of our

  1370. beauty

  1371. to him

  1372. Nat and

  1373. I were

  1374. married about

  1375. 17 and

  1376. half years

  1377. ago

  1378. and I

  1379. still remember

  1380. the day

  1381. I remember

  1382. standing at

  1383. the front

  1384. of the

  1385. church

  1386. and looking

  1387. to the

  1388. back of

  1389. the church

  1390. about this

  1391. kind of

  1392. distance of

  1393. the doors

  1394. over there

  1395. and seeing

  1396. Nat appear

  1397. in the door

  1398. trying to

  1399. wait for the

  1400. other bridesmaids

  1401. to get out

  1402. of the way

  1403. and seeing

  1404. Nat appear

  1405. in the door

  1406. and I

  1407. thought she

  1408. was stunning

  1409. do you know

  1410. why

  1411. makeup

  1412. now just

  1413. bear with me

  1414. here for

  1415. a moment

  1416. let me

  1417. finish

  1418. not just

  1419. makeup

  1420. the dress

  1421. as well

  1422. now I

  1423. think my

  1424. wife is

  1425. beautiful

  1426. and in fact

  1427. she's more

  1428. beautiful to me

  1429. now than what

  1430. she was

  1431. then

  1432. but and

  1433. the point

  1434. I'm trying to

  1435. make is

  1436. I've married

  1437. a lot of

  1438. people in

  1439. over 20

  1440. years of

  1441. pastoral

  1442. ministry

  1443. every person

  1444. that I marry

  1445. comes down

  1446. the front

  1447. every bride

  1448. that I marry

  1449. looks better

  1450. on the day

  1451. that I marry

  1452. her than

  1453. the day

  1454. that I was

  1455. doing marriage

  1456. prep with

  1457. her

  1458. that is

  1459. that's the

  1460. point of

  1461. makeup and

  1462. dresses and

  1463. stuff isn't

  1464. it is that

  1465. not the

  1466. point

  1467. the point

  1468. is that

  1469. you know

  1470. all the

  1471. makeup and

  1472. the fancy

  1473. all the

  1474. goop and

  1475. the fancy

  1476. clothes and

  1477. that sort

  1478. of stuff

  1479. it takes

  1480. people up a

  1481. notch in

  1482. appearance

  1483. now if you

  1484. think that I

  1485. could have

  1486. spent a little

  1487. bit more time

  1488. on that you

  1489. should have

  1490. seen me at

  1491. six o'clock

  1492. this morning

  1493. a number

  1494. of all the

  1495. imperfections

  1496. and the

  1497. flaws that

  1498. I'm self

  1499. conscious about

  1500. have been

  1501. covered up

  1502. they've been

  1503. hidden

  1504. they've been

  1505. worked on

  1506. the point

  1507. is that

  1508. when Jesus

  1509. uses the

  1510. metaphor of

  1511. us being

  1512. his bride

  1513. one of the

  1514. things that

  1515. he has in

  1516. mind is

  1517. that in

  1518. spite of

  1519. all of our

  1520. spiritual

  1521. flaws

  1522. in spite of

  1523. all of our

  1524. failings

  1525. in spite of

  1526. all of our

  1527. sins

  1528. he has

  1529. clothed us

  1530. with his

  1531. righteousness

  1532. he has

  1533. surrounded us

  1534. with his

  1535. own beauty

  1536. that he has

  1537. given us

  1538. he has so

  1539. cleansed us

  1540. from our

  1541. sin

  1542. that when he

  1543. sees us

  1544. he goes

  1545. wow

  1546. that's

  1547. awesome

  1548. that is

  1549. awesome

  1550. his heart

  1551. bursts

  1552. at the

  1553. sight of

  1554. us

  1555. to the

  1556. degree

  1557. to the

  1558. degree

  1559. that you

  1560. know

  1561. that that

  1562. is true

  1563. of you

  1564. in his

  1565. eyes

  1566. you will

  1567. be set

  1568. free

  1569. from our

  1570. culture's

  1571. enslavement

  1572. telling you

  1573. what you

  1574. must look

  1575. like

  1576. what you

  1577. must have

  1578. and what

  1579. you must

  1580. accomplish

  1581. in order to

  1582. be accepted

  1583. when you

  1584. realise that

  1585. you are

  1586. beautiful

  1587. beyond

  1588. comprehension

  1589. in his

  1590. eyes

  1591. because of

  1592. the work

  1593. that he's

  1594. done for

  1595. you

  1596. so you

  1597. get a new

  1598. definition

  1599. of beauty

  1600. you get a

  1601. new experience

  1602. of beauty

  1603. and the

  1604. third thing

  1605. you get

  1606. is a new

  1607. understanding

  1608. from Jesus

  1609. in making us

  1610. beautiful

  1611. a new

  1612. understanding

  1613. of the

  1614. hardships

  1615. and the

  1616. trials

  1617. and the

  1618. difficulties

  1619. that you

  1620. face

  1621. this is

  1622. taking me

  1623. back to

  1624. the beginning

  1625. there are

  1626. plenty of

  1627. things in

  1628. this world

  1629. that will

  1630. cause us

  1631. to question

  1632. his

  1633. existence

  1634. God's

  1635. existence

  1636. God's

  1637. power

  1638. and his

  1639. willingness

  1640. to intervene

  1641. in his

  1642. love for

  1643. me

  1644. plenty

  1645. of

  1646. things

  1647. and there

  1648. are plenty

  1649. of parts

  1650. of the

  1651. Bible

  1652. that talk

  1653. about

  1654. suffering

  1655. and hardship

  1656. refining

  1657. those

  1658. Jesus

  1659. loves

  1660. and the

  1661. imagery

  1662. of the

  1663. Bible

  1664. is

  1665. of gold

  1666. being

  1667. refined

  1668. and the

  1669. impurities

  1670. being burned

  1671. up in a

  1672. furnace

  1673. you see

  1674. once you're

  1675. assured of

  1676. God's

  1677. love

  1678. and really

  1679. assured of

  1680. God's

  1681. love

  1682. love

  1683. when you

  1684. understand

  1685. that you

  1686. are

  1687. beautiful

  1688. in his

  1689. eyes

  1690. and he

  1691. bursts

  1692. at the

  1693. sight

  1694. of

  1695. seeing

  1696. you

  1697. then when

  1698. you go

  1699. through

  1700. troubles

  1701. and

  1702. hardships

  1703. you start

  1704. to see

  1705. that it's

  1706. actually

  1707. purifying

  1708. you

  1709. making

  1710. you

  1711. more

  1712. beautiful

  1713. to him

  1714. that's

  1715. what it's

  1716. doing

  1717. it's

  1718. making

  1719. you

  1720. more

  1721. beautiful

  1722. on the

  1723. inside

  1724. God

  1725. hasn't

  1726. actually

  1727. abandoned

  1728. you

  1729. he uses

  1730. the

  1731. refining

  1732. process

  1733. to get

  1734. rid of

  1735. pride

  1736. and foolishness

  1737. and fear

  1738. and all the

  1739. other sinful

  1740. stupid things

  1741. that we

  1742. do

  1743. bit by

  1744. bit

  1745. he is

  1746. making

  1747. you

  1748. more

  1749. and more

  1750. beautiful

  1751. to him

  1752. once you

  1753. are

  1754. assured of

  1755. God's

  1756. love

  1757. then you

  1758. see the

  1759. hard times

  1760. as God's

  1761. spiritual

  1762. beauty

  1763. treatments

  1764. and when

  1765. you go

  1766. through the

  1767. hardships

  1768. with absolute

  1769. assurance

  1770. that you

  1771. are beautiful

  1772. in God's

  1773. sight

  1774. you actually

  1775. start to become

  1776. beautiful in your

  1777. heart

  1778. on the inside

  1779. just like

  1780. pressure

  1781. creates

  1782. a diamond

  1783. God has

  1784. not abandoned

  1785. you in his

  1786. troubles

  1787. he is at

  1788. work

  1789. leading you

  1790. and holding

  1791. you

  1792. and refining

  1793. you

  1794. and saving

  1795. you

  1796. making you

  1797. more beautiful

  1798. in his

  1799. eyes

  1800. for the

  1801. day when

  1802. he will

  1803. see you

  1804. face to

  1805. face

  1806. of the

  1807. great

  1808. wedding

  1809. banquet

  1810. where he

  1811. will

  1812. enfold you

  1813. in his

  1814. arms

  1815. and love

  1816. you

  1817. for all

  1818. eternity

  1819. and so

  1820. if that's

  1821. you right

  1822. now

  1823. trying to

  1824. not sure

  1825. whether or

  1826. not he

  1827. loves you

  1828. can I

  1829. just get

  1830. you to

  1831. look to

  1832. Jesus

  1833. and can

  1834. I have

  1835. Romans 8

  1836. floating around

  1837. in your

  1838. mind

  1839. we know

  1840. that in

  1841. all things

  1842. God works

  1843. for the

  1844. good of

  1845. those who

  1846. love him

  1847. who have

  1848. been called

  1849. according to

  1850. his purpose

  1851. Amen
