  1. two guys in their mid-20s tried to get tickets for a sold-out Metallica concert in the US.

  2. That was probably their first mistake.

  3. Having failed in getting the tickets to their concert to go and see their heroes,

  4. they decided instead to hang out in the venue car park drinking alcohol.

  5. And so eventually, fueled by alcohol, they decided that they would take a risk.

  6. And the plan was to jump the two-metre fence and to sneak into the back of the concert.

  7. However, the fence on the car park side was two metres.

  8. What they didn't realise was on the other side was a seven-metre drop below the two-metre fence.

  9. And so something that they couldn't see, obviously, in the darkness.

  10. And so the first guy jumps over the fence, falls about halfway down the distance,

  11. and lands in this large tree which broke his fall and his left arm.

  12. He also somehow managed to get his shorts stuck in a tree branch,

  13. and so he was dangling there in his shorts with his broken arm.

  14. And it was at that point that he remembered he had a pocket knife.

  15. Rips out his pocket knife and decides to cut his shorts free.

  16. In the moment of cutting his shorts free, he dropped the knife,

  17. and he fell through the rest of the tree and landed on some pretty hard concrete,

  18. some branches of some concrete down the bottom, which broke his fall.

  19. But he also landed on his knife that he dropped, which stabbed him in his left thigh.

  20. His mate decides to attempt a rescue.

  21. Throws a rope over the fence, ties his mate up, or gets his mate to tie himself up.

  22. Tries to pull him up, but he's too heavy.

  23. It's at this moment he has a stroke of genius,

  24. and decides to tie the other end of the rope to his pickup truck.

  25. And because of the level of alcohol in his system, he put it into the wrong gear.

  26. He put it into reverse, drove through the fence, over the tree,

  27. and landed on his mates, which killed him instantly.

  28. He himself was thrown out of the vehicle

  29. and died from internal injuries not much longer after that.

  30. Now, risk is any action that exposes you to loss or injury.

  31. That's what risk is.

  32. If you take a risk, you can lose money, you can lose face,

  33. you can lose your health, or you can lose your life.

  34. And what's worse, if you take a risk,

  35. you may in fact be endangering other people and not just yourself.

  36. That's risk.

  37. And so would a wise and loving person ever take a risk?

  38. Is it loving to endanger others?

  39. It depends.

  40. You can throw your life away in a hundred sinful or stupid ways,

  41. like trying to secure tickets for a Metallica concert,

  42. and you can die as a result of it.

  43. But losing your life is not the same as wasting your life.

  44. What if successful risk brought enormous benefit to many people,

  45. and its failure would cause harm to only you?

  46. It may not be loving to choose comfort or security

  47. when something great may be achieved for the cause of Christ

  48. or for the sake of other people.

  49. And that's where we find ourselves in Esther today.

  50. As we saw last week in chapter 3,

  51. Edict goes out to the whole Persian Empire

  52. about the extermination of the Jews on a set date.

  53. And on that day, if you're a Jewish person in the Persian Empire,

  54. your next-door neighbour, your school friends,

  55. your work colleagues are given permission by law to,

  56. as it says in chapter 3, verse 13,

  57. to destroy, to kill,

  58. and annihilate you

  59. and plunder all of your goods.

  60. And so at the beginning of chapter 4,

  61. as Deb just read out,

  62. Mordecai is in sackcloth and mourning

  63. at the open square of the city

  64. in front of the king's gate

  65. because of this edict.

  66. It says,

  67. When Mordecai learned of all that had been done,

  68. he tore his clothes,

  69. he put on sackcloth and ashes

  70. and went out into the city

  71. wailing loudly and bitterly.

  72. Now, if I was Mordecai,

  73. I've got to say,

  74. I'd be feeling a little bit responsible at this moment.

  75. This all transpired

  76. because I refused to give acknowledgement to Haman.

  77. Who could have predicted it would have gone this bad?

  78. Feeling a little bit responsible.

  79. But here's Mordecai.

  80. He's at the palace gate,

  81. chapter 1, verse 2.

  82. He calls it the citadel of Susa.

  83. It was a strongly fortified,

  84. elevated position in Susa

  85. and it was all designed

  86. to exalt the importance of the king

  87. and to guard his person.

  88. So this is Mordecai.

  89. He's at the gate of the palace complex,

  90. the high city.

  91. It's the palace.

  92. It's the citadel

  93. and it's the place of power and influence

  94. for the whole Persian empire.

  95. And this is where Esther is.

  96. She's on the other side of this gate

  97. and Mordecai is trying to get her attention

  98. to do something about this situation,

  99. to save the people of God.

  100. Now the first thing we learn here

  101. is that God doesn't just work

  102. using missionaries and ministers

  103. and church workers for his work in the world.

  104. Esther's not head of a congregation.

  105. She's not even in a congregation.

  106. She's not even out in the streets.

  107. She's here in the palace.

  108. And this, of course,

  109. is the problem with Esther

  110. at the beginning of this chapter.

  111. There is a danger

  112. of being in the palace.

  113. Notice Esther's response

  114. to Mordecai's weeping in verse 4.

  115. When Esther's eunuchs

  116. and female attendants

  117. came and told her about Mordecai,

  118. she was in great distress.

  119. Why was she in great distress?

  120. Well, we know.

  121. She sent clothes for him

  122. to put on instead of his sackcloth.

  123. But he would not accept them.

  124. She was in great distress

  125. because he'd torn his clothes.

  126. And so she sends him clothes.

  127. Maybe he's making a spectacle of himself.

  128. Esther has become totally isolated

  129. from the rest of God's people.

  130. Every Jew from Ethiopia to India

  131. knew about this edict.

  132. Except Esther, it would appear.

  133. She didn't have a clue.

  134. Maybe she didn't have time

  135. between the matricules

  136. and the pedicules and the facials.

  137. Maybe it was the shopping.

  138. In any case,

  139. she'd done a really good job

  140. at concealing her identity

  141. and so who would bother

  142. to inform her

  143. that her people

  144. are about to be executed?

  145. How easy it is

  146. to become isolated

  147. from the needs around us

  148. and for God's concerns

  149. for his world

  150. when we live

  151. the good life in the palace.

  152. And Mordecai here begs her,

  153. he pleads with her

  154. to use her clout

  155. and her position

  156. and her faith with the king

  157. to do something,

  158. to work for justice

  159. and to save her people.

  160. Notice Esther's first response

  161. to Mordecai in verse 11.

  162. All the king's officials

  163. and the people

  164. of the world provinces

  165. know that for any man

  166. or woman

  167. who approaches the king

  168. in the inner court

  169. without being summoned

  170. by the king

  171. has but one law,

  172. that they be put to death

  173. unless the king

  174. extends the gold scepter

  175. to them

  176. and spares their lives.

  177. But 30 days have passed

  178. since I was called

  179. to go to the king.

  180. She says there's risk here.

  181. Mordecai, there's risk.

  182. Now let's not forget

  183. that this is the Esther

  184. who got to where she was

  185. because her predecessor

  186. was a little too bold.

  187. Remember what happened to Vashti?

  188. And notice too

  189. that Esther says

  190. that Xerxes

  191. hasn't asked her

  192. to come to her

  193. for 30 days.

  194. It's not like there's

  195. a bunch of stuff

  196. on Netflix

  197. that he's trying to watch.

  198. This guy does not

  199. sleep alone.

  200. And so if she has not

  201. been called for 30 days,

  202. then it could possibly

  203. be a sign

  204. that she is out of favour

  205. with Xerxes.

  206. So she says to Mordecai,

  207. you don't know

  208. what you are asking of me.

  209. I could lose everything.

  210. And Mordecai sends back

  211. a message in verse 13

  212. which is the high point

  213. of all of Esther.

  214. Esther.

  215. This chapter 4

  216. is the main chapter

  217. in Esther

  218. and this is the high point

  219. of the chapter.

  220. Do not think

  221. that because you are

  222. in the king's house,

  223. you alone

  224. of all the Jews

  225. will escape.

  226. For if you remain

  227. silent at this time,

  228. relief and deliverance

  229. for the Jews

  230. will arise

  231. from another place.

  232. But you and your father's

  233. family will perish.

  234. And who knows

  235. but that you have come

  236. to your royal position

  237. for such a time

  238. as this.

  239. In other words,

  240. if you don't risk

  241. losing the palace,

  242. you will lose everything.

  243. If you risk

  244. losing the palace,

  245. you might lose everything

  246. but if you don't risk

  247. losing the palace,

  248. you will lose everything.

  249. If all the Jews

  250. were killed,

  251. then you'll eventually

  252. be sniffed out

  253. and you'll be discovered

  254. as a Jew

  255. and you will die too.

  256. And if the Jews

  257. aren't killed,

  258. there's some other one

  259. who comes in

  260. and rescues

  261. by God's hand,

  262. then you'll just

  263. be discovered

  264. as a traitor.

  265. Now,

  266. we're not in

  267. the identical situation

  268. as Esther here.

  269. Let's be clear

  270. about that.

  271. But it might be helpful

  272. just to stand back

  273. just for a moment

  274. and generalise

  275. a little for a moment.

  276. I think there are

  277. two remarkable principles

  278. that have powerful

  279. applications for us.

  280. First,

  281. first principle here,

  282. unless you use

  283. the cloud

  284. that you've got,

  285. the credentials

  286. you've got,

  287. the money you've got,

  288. the position you've got,

  289. the skills you've got,

  290. for the service

  291. of others,

  292. rather than feathering

  293. your own nest,

  294. then those things

  295. don't become

  296. freeing for you,

  297. they become

  298. enslaving.

  299. That's the first principle.

  300. the palace

  301. was in fact

  302. death row

  303. for Esther

  304. if she used it

  305. for her own comfort

  306. and her own security.

  307. If you're unwilling

  308. to jeopardise

  309. your place

  310. in the palace,

  311. then the palace

  312. has ownership

  313. of you.

  314. It has taken

  315. over you.

  316. The only way

  317. that you're prepared

  318. to risk life

  319. in the palace

  320. is if your identity

  321. has its foundation

  322. somewhere else.

  323. That is,

  324. something other

  325. than your net worth

  326. becomes your self-worth.

  327. Mordecai seems

  328. to be saying here

  329. that if you can't

  330. throw away the palace,

  331. or at least

  332. risk throwing away

  333. the palace,

  334. or risk your place

  335. in the palace

  336. to do good

  337. for other people,

  338. then the palace

  339. actually owns you.

  340. You don't own

  341. the palace.

  342. So how do you

  343. get an identity

  344. that hasn't got

  345. its foundation

  346. in the palace?

  347. And the answer

  348. is actually hinted at

  349. in these verses.

  350. Remember those words

  351. he said,

  352. who knows,

  353. but that you have

  354. come to your royal

  355. position for such

  356. a time as this?

  357. The word come there

  358. is in the passive

  359. form,

  360. which means it's

  361. probably a little

  362. bit better to

  363. translate it like

  364. this.

  365. Who knows,

  366. but that you have

  367. been brought

  368. to the royal

  369. position for such

  370. a time as this?

  371. He's saying

  372. that you got

  373. to the palace

  374. by grace.

  375. your beauty

  376. was not

  377. something that

  378. your beauty

  379. was something

  380. that was given

  381. to you.

  382. She didn't

  383. produce the

  384. door of opportunity

  385. that saw her

  386. rise from

  387. orphan girl

  388. to queen.

  389. God has been

  390. silent but

  391. sovereignly working

  392. to this point.

  393. Now,

  394. although it's

  395. a general

  396. statement from

  397. Mordecai,

  398. Esther begins

  399. to respond to

  400. this message

  401. here.

  402. The Esther

  403. that we know

  404. from chapters

  405. one and two,

  406. the sweet,

  407. the pretty little

  408. Esther,

  409. who was compliant,

  410. who never rocked

  411. the boat,

  412. who doesn't

  413. ruffle any

  414. feathers,

  415. goes away from

  416. this moment and

  417. starts to give

  418. orders.

  419. It's Mordecai

  420. giving the

  421. orders at the

  422. beginning of the

  423. chapter,

  424. it's now Esther

  425. who starts giving

  426. the orders.

  427. And this is

  428. the turning

  429. point for

  430. Esther.

  431. This is where

  432. she steps

  433. up.

  434. This is where

  435. she utters

  436. those remarkable

  437. words in

  438. verse 16.

  439. Go gather

  440. all together

  441. all the Jews

  442. who are in

  443. Susa and

  444. fast for me.

  445. Do not eat

  446. or drink for

  447. three days,

  448. night or day.

  449. I and my

  450. attendants will

  451. fast as you

  452. do.

  453. And when this

  454. is done,

  455. I will go to

  456. the king,

  457. even though it

  458. is against the

  459. law.

  460. And if I

  461. perish, I

  462. perish.

  463. We go from

  464. Barbie doll

  465. sex kitten

  466. Esther to

  467. the one who's

  468. living the high

  469. life in the

  470. palace to

  471. Esther risking

  472. everything.

  473. Esther the

  474. hero.

  475. hero.

  476. What an

  477. inspiration.

  478. Let me just

  479. pause again

  480. there for a

  481. moment because

  482. there is a

  483. danger here as

  484. well.

  485. There's a danger

  486. that some of us

  487. might be so

  488. inspired by

  489. Esther as

  490. can I say

  491. many feminists

  492. are inspired

  493. by Esther to

  494. get out there

  495. and do

  496. something and

  497. make change

  498. for good.

  499. If you're

  500. inspired by

  501. Esther,

  502. that is,

  503. some here

  504. might stop

  505. seeing all

  506. that God

  507. has given

  508. them for

  509. their own

  510. benefit,

  511. feathering their

  512. own nest and

  513. for their own

  514. self-gratification

  515. and start

  516. instead to

  517. use everything

  518. that God's

  519. given them

  520. for a means

  521. to serve

  522. others.

  523. You might

  524. start to

  525. take risks

  526. and get

  527. more interested

  528. in justice

  529. and mercy

  530. and mission

  531. and others

  532. might be

  533. interested by

  534. Esther just

  535. to start

  536. speaking up

  537. and speaking

  538. your mind

  539. and confronting

  540. the issues.

  541. Maybe you've

  542. been too

  543. quiet about

  544. your beliefs,

  545. you've been

  546. afraid to

  547. speak,

  548. you're in

  549. the background,

  550. most people

  551. don't know

  552. who you are

  553. so now,

  554. come Monday

  555. morning,

  556. I'm on the

  557. front foot and

  558. I'm just

  559. going to let

  560. people have

  561. it.

  562. There's a

  563. danger in

  564. this and

  565. the danger

  566. is it

  567. won't last.

  568. The danger

  569. is that if

  570. you get

  571. inspiration

  572. by an

  573. example,

  574. even an

  575. example like

  576. Esther,

  577. then your

  578. basic motivation

  579. is guilt.

  580. Guilt because

  581. of a past

  582. life of

  583. selfishness,

  584. oh my

  585. goodness,

  586. I've been

  587. living so

  588. poorly and

  589. I've got to

  590. all change

  591. now,

  592. I feel so

  593. selfish from

  594. where I've

  595. been.

  596. It might

  597. be guilt

  598. over

  599. elitism,

  600. it might

  601. be guilt

  602. because I

  603. live in

  604. a really

  605. nice part

  606. of a

  607. city in

  608. a great

  609. country.

  610. Motivation

  611. by guilt

  612. wears off

  613. because guilt

  614. doesn't

  615. actually change

  616. you on the

  617. inside.

  618. Changes

  619. actions on

  620. the outside

  621. but doesn't

  622. change you

  623. on the

  624. inside.

  625. When guilt

  626. is your

  627. motivation,

  628. then you

  629. are still

  630. going to

  631. get your

  632. identity

  633. from your

  634. performance.

  635. performance.

  636. When guilt

  637. is your

  638. motivation,

  639. you still

  640. get your

  641. identity

  642. from your

  643. performance.

  644. And

  645. self-righteousness

  646. is always

  647. the fruit

  648. of performance.

  649. I'm not

  650. going to be

  651. like those

  652. other so-called

  653. Christians who

  654. don't give a

  655. rip about

  656. justice and

  657. mercy.

  658. I'm going

  659. to lead

  660. the way

  661. in this.

  662. I'm going

  663. to be

  664. principled

  665. and I'm

  666. going to

  667. be outspoken.

  668. It's not

  669. actual change

  670. in the

  671. heart and

  672. it's revealed

  673. that when

  674. you're confronted

  675. by others

  676. who don't

  677. have the

  678. same values

  679. that you

  680. have,

  681. you get

  682. angry with

  683. them.

  684. You become

  685. judgmental.

  686. That's the

  687. outworking of

  688. self-righteousness.

  689. And there

  690. is another

  691. danger here

  692. and that's

  693. overreaction.

  694. This is

  695. where you

  696. give everything

  697. away,

  698. go home

  699. right now,

  700. right now,

  701. out all the

  702. checks,

  703. get everything

  704. and put on

  705. sackcloth

  706. and mourning

  707. and go

  708. and sit

  709. in the

  710. mall.

  711. You do

  712. anything,

  713. give away

  714. everything

  715. without any

  716. thought,

  717. any wise

  718. stewardship.

  719. Now,

  720. let me say,

  721. there is a

  722. time to

  723. throw a

  724. band in

  725. the air

  726. and there

  727. are also

  728. times to

  729. pull back

  730. and to

  731. regroup.

  732. You know,

  733. let's be

  734. clear here,

  735. it took

  736. Esther a

  737. little while

  738. before she

  739. actually

  740. approached

  741. Xerxes

  742. and when

  743. she did

  744. approach

  745. Xerxes,

  746. he had

  747. to ask

  748. her three

  749. times what

  750. her request

  751. was.

  752. Three times.

  753. It's almost

  754. like she's

  755. about to

  756. say it,

  757. come to

  758. dinner.

  759. You see

  760. that in

  761. chapter 5.

  762. My point

  763. is if you

  764. just look at

  765. Esther as an

  766. example,

  767. it will wear

  768. off or

  769. you'll become

  770. more and more

  771. self-righteous

  772. and more

  773. pharisaical or

  774. you'll just

  775. become stupid

  776. if you just

  777. look at her

  778. as an

  779. example.

  780. But what

  781. if you

  782. didn't just

  783. look at

  784. Esther as

  785. an example

  786. but saw

  787. her as a

  788. signpost?

  789. Esther

  790. saved her

  791. people by

  792. two things,

  793. by

  794. identification

  795. and by

  796. mediation.

  797. Identification

  798. and mediation.

  799. She

  800. identified

  801. with her

  802. people.

  803. She didn't

  804. take the

  805. safe way.

  806. Her

  807. people were

  808. condemned

  809. and she

  810. identified

  811. with them

  812. and in

  813. fact came

  814. under the

  815. same

  816. condemnation.

  817. She

  818. risked her

  819. life and

  820. she says

  821. if I

  822. perish,

  823. I perish.

  824. And because

  825. she identified

  826. with her

  827. people,

  828. she could

  829. mediate.

  830. She could

  831. go before

  832. the throne

  833. of power

  834. in a way

  835. that no

  836. one else

  837. could.

  838. She went

  839. before the

  840. throne of

  841. power and

  842. because she

  843. was favoured,

  844. that favour

  845. was attributed

  846. to her

  847. people or

  848. imputed to

  849. her people.

  850. She saved

  851. her people

  852. through

  853. identification

  854. with them

  855. and mediation

  856. for them.

  857. Now Esther

  858. was a

  859. flawed

  860. saviour,

  861. a very

  862. flawed

  863. saviour,

  864. but she

  865. points us

  866. to a

  867. far

  868. greater

  869. saviour.

  870. Jesus

  871. lived in

  872. the ultimate

  873. palace,

  874. the very

  875. presence of

  876. God in

  877. the kingdom

  878. and as

  879. the son

  880. of God

  881. he had

  882. ultimate

  883. beauty

  884. and glory

  885. and he

  886. left it.

  887. No one

  888. had to

  889. manipulate

  890. him,

  891. no one

  892. put pressure

  893. on him,

  894. no one

  895. had to

  896. convince him

  897. for it,

  898. he wasn't

  899. getting

  900. pedicules

  901. and manicules

  902. and facials,

  903. he wasn't

  904. backed into

  905. a corner,

  906. Philippians 2

  907. says that

  908. he had

  909. equality with

  910. the father

  911. but he

  912. did not

  913. hold on

  914. to it,

  915. he emptied

  916. himself,

  917. became down,

  918. he identified

  919. with his

  920. people,

  921. he took

  922. on their

  923. condemnation,

  924. he didn't

  925. do it

  926. at the

  927. risk of

  928. his life,

  929. he did

  930. it at the

  931. cost of

  932. his life,

  933. he didn't

  934. say if

  935. I perish

  936. I perish,

  937. he said

  938. when I

  939. perish,

  940. I perish,

  941. he went

  942. to the

  943. cross,

  944. there he

  945. died and

  946. made atonement

  947. for our

  948. sins and

  949. now the

  950. Bible says

  951. that he

  952. stands before

  953. the throne

  954. of the

  955. universe and

  956. his favour

  957. is our

  958. favour in

  959. front of

  960. the king of

  961. kings,

  962. the lord of

  963. all the

  964. world.

  965. You see

  966. if,

  967. you see

  968. Esther as

  969. an example

  970. and say

  971. be like

  972. Esther,

  973. it will

  974. crush you

  975. because you

  976. could never

  977. do it.

  978. But if

  979. you see

  980. Jesus as

  981. your

  982. saviour,

  983. not as

  984. an example

  985. doing

  986. something for

  987. someone else,

  988. but as a

  989. saviour

  990. rescuing

  991. you,

  992. it changes

  993. your identity.

  994. He becomes

  995. your security,

  996. he becomes

  997. your value,

  998. he becomes

  999. your worth

  1000. and suddenly

  1001. everything else

  1002. in your life

  1003. just becomes

  1004. stuff because

  1005. you've got

  1006. everything when

  1007. you've got

  1008. Jesus.

  1009. you're set

  1010. free to

  1011. risk stuff,

  1012. you're set

  1013. free to

  1014. lose stuff

  1015. because

  1016. your self-worth

  1017. is not

  1018. your net

  1019. worth and

  1020. when you

  1021. lose stuff

  1022. in Jesus,

  1023. you don't

  1024. lose

  1025. yourself.

  1026. If you

  1027. see what

  1028. Jesus has

  1029. done for

  1030. you in

  1031. losing the

  1032. ultimate

  1033. palace for

  1034. you,

  1035. then and

  1036. only then

  1037. will you

  1038. have the

  1039. freedom to

  1040. risk for

  1041. God's

  1042. glory in

  1043. the sake

  1044. of others.

  1045. When you

  1046. see Jesus

  1047. risk for

  1048. you,

  1049. there are

  1050. at least

  1051. four implications

  1052. for that.

  1053. At least

  1054. four.

  1055. So let me

  1056. go through

  1057. them.

  1058. Firstly,

  1059. if I perish,

  1060. I perish

  1061. is the

  1062. language that's

  1063. calling you,

  1064. Christian

  1065. person to

  1066. identify with

  1067. the poor

  1068. and the

  1069. oppressed in

  1070. this world.

  1071. Just like

  1072. Esther did,

  1073. identifying with

  1074. her people,

  1075. those in

  1076. great desperate

  1077. need.

  1078. So if I

  1079. perish, I

  1080. perish is the

  1081. language calling

  1082. you, Christian

  1083. person, to

  1084. identify with

  1085. the poor and

  1086. the oppressed

  1087. in this world.

  1088. If this is a

  1089. call for us

  1090. as believers,

  1091. having seen

  1092. what Jesus

  1093. has done for

  1094. us to

  1095. identify with

  1096. the people

  1097. who are

  1098. outside the

  1099. palace.

  1100. Scottish

  1101. minister

  1102. Robert

  1103. Murray

  1104. Mishane

  1105. preached this

  1106. message to

  1107. Scottish

  1108. Christians

  1109. living in

  1110. Scottish

  1111. cities in

  1112. 1838.

  1113. He said,

  1114. I fear

  1115. that there

  1116. are some

  1117. Christians

  1118. among you

  1119. to whom

  1120. Christ will

  1121. not be able

  1122. to say on

  1123. the last

  1124. day,

  1125. well done,

  1126. good and

  1127. faithful servant.

  1128. He's referring

  1129. there to

  1130. Matthew 25.

  1131. Your

  1132. hearty

  1133. dwelling

  1134. rises

  1135. amongst

  1136. thousands

  1137. who have

  1138. scarcely a

  1139. fire to

  1140. warn themselves

  1141. at and

  1142. have but

  1143. little clothing

  1144. to keep

  1145. out the

  1146. biting frost

  1147. and yet you

  1148. don't darken

  1149. their door.

  1150. You heave

  1151. a sigh,

  1152. perhaps at a

  1153. distance,

  1154. but you do

  1155. not visit

  1156. them.

  1157. My

  1158. friends,

  1159. I'm

  1160. concerned

  1161. for the

  1162. poor,

  1163. but I'm

  1164. actually more

  1165. concerned for

  1166. you.

  1167. I don't

  1168. know what

  1169. Christ will

  1170. say to

  1171. you on

  1172. the great

  1173. day.

  1174. You say

  1175. you follow

  1176. Christ,

  1177. but you

  1178. don't care

  1179. for his

  1180. poor.

  1181. I fear

  1182. that there

  1183. may be

  1184. many hearing

  1185. me who

  1186. now know

  1187. well that

  1188. they may

  1189. not be

  1190. Christians at

  1191. all because

  1192. they don't

  1193. love to

  1194. give.

  1195. To give

  1196. largely,

  1197. and generously,

  1198. not begrudgingly,

  1199. requires a

  1200. brand new

  1201. heart.

  1202. An old

  1203. heart would

  1204. rather part

  1205. with its

  1206. lifeblood

  1207. than its

  1208. money.

  1209. Oh, my

  1210. dear Christians,

  1211. if you

  1212. would be

  1213. like Christ,

  1214. give much,

  1215. give often,

  1216. give freely

  1217. to the vile

  1218. and the poor

  1219. and the

  1220. thankless and

  1221. the undeserving.

  1222. Christ is

  1223. glorious and

  1224. he is

  1225. happy and

  1226. so will

  1227. you be.

  1228. It is not

  1229. your money I

  1230. want but

  1231. your happiness.

  1232. Remember his

  1233. word.

  1234. It is more

  1235. blessed to

  1236. give than

  1237. receive.

  1238. That's the

  1239. first bit of

  1240. if I perish,

  1241. I perish.

  1242. Secondly,

  1243. if I perish,

  1244. I perish is

  1245. the language of

  1246. exciting mission.

  1247. Wherever you

  1248. are right

  1249. now,

  1250. you've got

  1251. certain gifts,

  1252. certain

  1253. abilities,

  1254. certain

  1255. experiences,

  1256. certain

  1257. opportunities,

  1258. certain experiences

  1259. even of

  1260. hardship and

  1261. suffering

  1262. that make

  1263. you uniquely

  1264. ready,

  1265. uniquely

  1266. ready

  1267. to help

  1268. certain

  1269. people in

  1270. this world

  1271. that no one

  1272. else can

  1273. help.

  1274. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:10

  1275. verse 10

  1276. says that we

  1277. are God's

  1278. workmanship

  1279. created in

  1280. Christ Jesus

  1281. to do good

  1282. works that God

  1283. has prepared

  1284. in advance

  1285. for us to

  1286. do.

  1287. And the

  1288. word workmanship

  1289. there carries

  1290. the idea

  1291. of

  1292. the original

  1293. root meaning

  1294. is poem.

  1295. It's where we

  1296. get our word

  1297. poem form.

  1298. And the idea

  1299. is that we

  1300. are God's

  1301. artwork.

  1302. We have been

  1303. uniquely crafted

  1304. by God with

  1305. gifts and

  1306. talents and

  1307. positions and

  1308. strengths and

  1309. weaknesses,

  1310. even weaknesses

  1311. and blessings

  1312. and sufferings

  1313. that make us

  1314. uniquely placed

  1315. by God to

  1316. do unique

  1317. works for

  1318. other people.

  1319. Every one

  1320. of us.

  1321. You've been

  1322. brought to

  1323. whatever place

  1324. you've been

  1325. brought to

  1326. for such

  1327. a time

  1328. as this.

  1329. Ask God

  1330. what it

  1331. is.

  1332. Ask God

  1333. what it

  1334. is.

  1335. Thirdly,

  1336. if I

  1337. perish,

  1338. I perish

  1339. is the

  1340. language of

  1341. unconditional

  1342. obedience.

  1343. It means

  1344. I'm going to

  1345. follow God

  1346. whatever

  1347. happens.

  1348. And it's

  1349. really essential

  1350. for us to

  1351. understand who

  1352. it is that's

  1353. calling us

  1354. to

  1355. unconditional

  1356. obedience.

  1357. Imagine

  1358. the distance

  1359. between the

  1360. earth and

  1361. the sun,

  1362. approximately

  1363. 149.6

  1364. million

  1365. kilometers,

  1366. is represented

  1367. by the

  1368. thickness of

  1369. this sheet

  1370. of paper.

  1371. that represents

  1372. 149.6

  1373. million

  1374. kilometers.

  1375. The distance

  1376. between the

  1377. earth and

  1378. the nearest

  1379. star to

  1380. earth

  1381. is,

  1382. would,

  1383. a stack

  1384. of paper

  1385. like that,

  1386. 360

  1387. reams of

  1388. paper high.

  1389. that's the

  1390. distance from

  1391. the earth

  1392. to the

  1393. nearest

  1394. star.

  1395. That's

  1396. about a

  1397. 20 meter

  1398. high stack

  1399. of paper.

  1400. The distance

  1401. across the

  1402. little galaxy

  1403. that we

  1404. exist in

  1405. would require

  1406. 3.456

  1407. million

  1408. stacks,

  1409. reams of

  1410. paper.

  1411. That's a

  1412. stack of

  1413. paper,

  1414. I think,

  1415. roughly

  1416. 192

  1417. kilometers

  1418. high.

  1419. This

  1420. universe is

  1421. but a

  1422. little

  1423. speck

  1424. amongst

  1425. all the,

  1426. this galaxy

  1427. is a little

  1428. speck amongst

  1429. all the other

  1430. galaxies in

  1431. our world,

  1432. our universe.

  1433. It's pretty

  1434. impressive when

  1435. you consider

  1436. this is the

  1437. thickness between

  1438. here and the

  1439. sun.

  1440. Frankly,

  1441. the sun

  1442. wasn't close

  1443. enough this

  1444. morning to

  1445. us.

  1446. And the

  1447. point is that

  1448. Hebrews 1,

  1449. 2 and 3

  1450. says that

  1451. this Jesus

  1452. is the

  1453. one who

  1454. spoke it

  1455. all into

  1456. existence

  1457. and he's

  1458. the one

  1459. who upholds

  1460. it by the

  1461. power of

  1462. his word.

  1463. Or another

  1464. way, my

  1465. translation,

  1466. he holds

  1467. it up by

  1468. his pinky.

  1469. This is the

  1470. Jesus who

  1471. calls you to

  1472. unconditional

  1473. obedience.

  1474. This is the

  1475. one who

  1476. calls you to

  1477. unconditional

  1478. obedience.

  1479. This is the

  1480. one who gave

  1481. his life for

  1482. you.

  1483. He's not

  1484. your personal

  1485. assistant.

  1486. He doesn't

  1487. fit with your

  1488. program and

  1489. follow you when

  1490. you can fit

  1491. him in.

  1492. You don't

  1493. RSVP with

  1494. Jesus and

  1495. wait for a

  1496. better offer.

  1497. friends,

  1498. take your

  1499. hands off

  1500. your life

  1501. because you

  1502. don't have

  1503. control of

  1504. it anyway.

  1505. You don't

  1506. have control

  1507. of it.

  1508. It seems to

  1509. me that God

  1510. intends for

  1511. us to live

  1512. with uncertainty

  1513. and risk in

  1514. our lives,

  1515. whether we're

  1516. Christian or

  1517. not.

  1518. James 4

    James 4:13–15

  1519. verses 13

  1520. to 15

  1521. says this,

  1522. now listen,

  1523. you who

  1524. say today

  1525. or tomorrow

  1526. we will go

  1527. to this

  1528. city or

  1529. that city,

  1530. spend a

  1531. year there,

  1532. carry on

  1533. business and

  1534. make money,

  1535. why you

  1536. don't even

  1537. know what

  1538. will happen

  1539. tomorrow.

  1540. What is

  1541. your life?

  1542. You are a

  1543. mist that

  1544. appears for a

  1545. little while

  1546. and then

  1547. vanishes.

  1548. Instead,

  1549. you ought to

  1550. say if it

  1551. is the

  1552. Lord's will,

  1553. we will

  1554. live and

  1555. do this or

  1556. that.

  1557. You don't

  1558. know,

  1559. frankly,

  1560. friends,

  1561. if your

  1562. heart is

  1563. going to

  1564. stop before

  1565. this meeting

  1566. is over.

  1567. You don't

  1568. know if

  1569. some

  1570. oncoming

  1571. driver will

  1572. swerve on

  1573. the wrong

  1574. side of the

  1575. lane and

  1576. hit you on

  1577. the way

  1578. home.

  1579. You don't

  1580. know if the

  1581. food that

  1582. you've eaten

  1583. this morning

  1584. is some

  1585. sort of

  1586. wicked

  1587. bacteria and

  1588. virus thing

  1589. in it that's

  1590. going to

  1591. kill you.

  1592. You don't

  1593. know if a

  1594. man with a

  1595. gun is

  1596. going to

  1597. shoot you

  1598. down the

  1599. mall in

  1600. Chatswood

  1601. before the

  1602. afternoon's

  1603. over.

  1604. We are

  1605. not God.

  1606. we do

  1607. not know

  1608. what tomorrow

  1609. is and

  1610. risk,

  1611. therefore,

  1612. is built

  1613. into the

  1614. very fabric

  1615. of our

  1616. lives.

  1617. You cannot

  1618. avoid risk

  1619. even if you

  1620. wanted to

  1621. avoid risk.

  1622. All of our

  1623. plans for

  1624. tomorrow's

  1625. activities can

  1626. be shattered

  1627. by a thousand

  1628. unknowns.

  1629. Whether we

  1630. stay at home

  1631. in bed or

  1632. we walk

  1633. along a

  1634. footpath,

  1635. we need

  1636. to explode

  1637. the myth

  1638. of safety

  1639. and to

  1640. somehow be

  1641. delivered from

  1642. the seduction

  1643. of security

  1644. that exists

  1645. in our

  1646. culture.

  1647. It's a

  1648. mirage.

  1649. Security

  1650. doesn't

  1651. exist.

  1652. Don't

  1653. listen to

  1654. the retirement

  1655. ads.

  1656. It

  1657. doesn't

  1658. exist.

  1659. And the

  1660. tragedy is

  1661. that in

  1662. the myth

  1663. of security

  1664. we are

  1665. paralyzed to

  1666. take any

  1667. risk for

  1668. the cause

  1669. of Christ

  1670. because we

  1671. are deluded

  1672. and we

  1673. think it

  1674. will jeopardize

  1675. the security

  1676. that doesn't

  1677. exist.

  1678. Take your

  1679. hands off

  1680. your life

  1681. and put

  1682. them

  1683. into his

  1684. pinky.

  1685. fourthly,

  1686. if I

  1687. perish,

  1688. I

  1689. perish

  1690. is the

  1691. language

  1692. of

  1693. greatness.

  1694. There

  1695. are 14

  1696. times in

  1697. the book

  1698. of Esther

  1699. where

  1700. Esther is

  1701. referred to

  1702. specifically

  1703. as Queen

  1704. Esther.

  1705. 13 of

  1706. the 14

  1707. times

  1708. occur

  1709. straight

  1710. after she

  1711. says,

  1712. if I

  1713. perish,

  1714. I

  1715. perish.

  1716. she

  1717. becomes a

  1718. person of

  1719. greatness

  1720. by letting

  1721. go of

  1722. her life

  1723. and placing

  1724. it in the

  1725. hands of

  1726. God for

  1727. his glory

  1728. and the

  1729. joy of

  1730. all others.

  1731. If I

  1732. perish,

  1733. I perish.

  1734. perish.

  1735. It's

  1736. the language

  1737. of risk.

  1738. It's

  1739. the language

  1740. of

  1741. greatness.

  1742. It's

  1743. the language

  1744. of

  1745. greatness.
