  1. Do you ever feel disappointed by the amount of joy that is in your life,

  2. specifically in your Christian life?

  3. Or maybe you're not a Christian.

  4. Maybe you're still thinking about whether or not that's something for you.

  5. And I wonder if you look at Christians and think they don't seem that joyful.

  6. They kind of just seem like everyone else, somber, serious,

  7. everyone else minus the fun stuff.

  8. If you're a Christian, do you hear Jesus' words in the Bible,

  9. places like John 10 where he says,

  10. I've come that you might have life and have it to the full?

  11. Do you hear that and think, yep, that's me.

  12. My life is full.

  13. Or do you hear it and think it sounds really nice,

  14. but it's not really how my life feels?

  15. Why the disconnect?

  16. Why being told life can be full and joyful and satisfying and amazing

  17. and then a different experience in our day-to-day or week-to-week?

  18. I mean, have we misunderstood God?

  19. I mean, are we reading him wrong?

  20. Do we have a wrong idea of what he means by joy?

  21. When he said life to the full, did he actually mean it'll be horrible,

  22. but hey, it won't last forever?

  23. Instead of kind of joy the way we normally think about it,

  24. was he talking about some kind of steely resolve,

  25. you know, some kind of grit your teeth and persevere version of joy?

  26. Maybe some kind of abstract version of joy

  27. that's a bit more intangible and harder to pin down,

  28. so it's harder to say if you do or don't have it.

  29. But we know what joy is.

  30. You know what joy is.

  31. Even if you want to distinguish it out from being something more substantial

  32. than, you know, just plain, simple happiness,

  33. you know what joy is.

  34. It's that feeling you get when what you desire becomes yours,

  35. when the thing that you want becomes yours.

  36. It's that feeling you have when you get down on one knee

  37. and ask her to marry you and she says yes.

  38. It's that feeling you have when you desperately need a job

  39. and a letter of offer arrives.

  40. It's that feeling you have when you share the gospel

  41. with somebody who's been resisting it and even opposed to it

  42. and they say yes.

  43. It's when your desires get fulfilled.

  44. That's joy.

  45. You know what it feels like.

  46. It's that deep, overflowing bubbliness.

  47. The dictionary describes it as a feeling of deep pleasure or happiness.

  48. It's all those good feelings just kind of turned up a bit

  49. with that higher degree of intensity and substance.

  50. I mean, joy is great.

  51. We know what joy is.

  52. Joy is desirable.

  53. But is it a word that you would use to describe your life as a Christian?

  54. Is it the main word you would use to describe your life as a Christian?

  55. Now, we can still get out of this one because you might say,

  56. hey, I know that some people are like those overtly joyful people,

  57. but that's just not me.

  58. And I can testify on this one because I'm what I like to refer to as emotional.

  59. I struggle to express emotions whether they're up or down.

  60. I only have one tone of voice, whether I'm happy or sad or anywhere in between.

  61. And you might be sitting there going, yeah, that's me too.

  62. I don't really express myself.

  63. So I'm joyful, but I'm just, I'm doing my back flips on the inside.

  64. You know, I'm cheering and clapping and everything, but it's internal.

  65. You just can't see it.

  66. I just express it differently.

  67. I don't like to be annoyingly happy like some people are.

  68. You know, you don't want to be that person who's standing at the bus stop in the rain

  69. when the bus comes, hits the puddle, sprays everyone.

  70. People are swearing, cursing, sending abusive emails to Sydney buses.

  71. But there's just that one person smiling and, you know, just, you know,

  72. it's nice to be refreshed with water.

  73. And you're just thinking you're a fraud or an idiot and I want to punch you in the face.

  74. And you don't want to be that annoying people.

  75. And just before we go on, if you are one of those people who has that punch reflex at that moment,

  76. sit on your hand because for the rest of tonight, Paul's probably going to annoy you.

  77. Paul's going to be one of those annoyingly joyful people in a ridiculous situation.

  78. This letter, Philippians, in the New Testament is a letter between Paul and the Philippians

  79. and it's written in response to a visit.

  80. So Paul's in prison and the Philippians send a guy named Epaphroditus to visit him

  81. to see how he's doing because they've heard he's in prison.

  82. They've heard he's doing it tough and they want to know what's going on for him.

  83. And so from this verse, verse 12 through to the end of chapter 3,

  84. is kind of the bit where Paul starts giving them details.

  85. Well, sort of.

  86. Have a look at verse 12.

  87. Now, I want you to know, brothers and sisters,

  88. that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.

  89. Now, before we get too far into this, we're going to slow down in this verse.

  90. Paul doesn't really give any detail about his situation.

  91. Even as we read the rest of this section, even as we get through the whole book,

  92. we know he's in chains, we know he's shackled.

  93. But what we know from other parts of the Bible is that Paul is most likely writing this

  94. while he's a prisoner under Roman guard.

  95. Literally shackled.

  96. Literally chains on his hands and feet.

  97. Constantly with a soldier guarding him with him.

  98. Never alone.

  99. Not comfortable.

  100. He's not in a minimum security day spa.

  101. However, the Roman Empire prided itself on its ability to be brutal.

  102. Paul's not in a pleasant place when he writes this letter.

  103. He doesn't know whether this imprisonment will end in him being executed or him being released.

  104. He doesn't know how long he's going to be stuck as a prisoner.

  105. And he's there because he did what God told him to in the first place.

  106. He preached Jesus.

  107. Now, if this was me, I would have been sending you status updates every 10 minutes about just how tough it all was.

  108. I would have been letting you know every detail about every sore and scar and wound and beating and terrible food and all that I could.

  109. Because I would want you to comprehend just how tough it was for me.

  110. I'd want you to appreciate what I was going through, to have empathy for it.

  111. And no one would think any less of me for that self-indulgence.

  112. You would think it's reasonable if I'm in that situation to claim it, to put my hand up and say, this is tough.

  113. But all Paul gives, and remember, this is a letter to some people who are his close friends.

  114. His dear, precious brothers and sisters, who he loves.

  115. And all he gives them, by the way of detail, he says, dear brothers and sisters,

  116. I really want you to know, what he's about to say is important, that all that has happened to me, that's it.

  117. That's the detail.

  118. All.

  119. I mean, the Philippians sent Epaphroditus traveling across the world because they wanted to know what was going on for Paul.

  120. They wanted to know how he was.

  121. They sent him with provisions.

  122. They sent him with well wishes, with money.

  123. In fact, Epaphroditus nearly died on this journey to go and see how Paul is going.

  124. And all the Philippians get back is, hey, I want you to know that all that has happened to me,

  125. it's like all that has happened from Paul's perspective is just incidental.

  126. It's not important.

  127. I'm not going to go into these details.

  128. I've got something important to say, but apparently his own personal situation and suffering

  129. don't rather mention.

  130. They're not worth bringing up except as kind of background to what he actually wants to talk about.

  131. Now, it's not to say that his situation is not real and painful and difficult.

  132. It's not to say he wasn't hurting or sad.

  133. It's not to say that it's bad to be any of those things.

  134. But for him, it's just not the most important thing.

  135. If he's just got one letter to these people that he loves, he wants to tell them something that matters most to him.

  136. And so, verse 12.

  137. As a result, it's become clear throughout the whole palace garden to everyone else that I'm in chains for Christ.

  138. See, all that stuff which Paul can't even be bothered writing about, his suffering, his isolation,

  139. his potential impending death and execution, all that has served to advance the gospel.

  140. The gospel is what he wants to talk about.

  141. Jesus is what matters to him.

  142. His deepest concern, even in his horrible circumstance, is that people keep hearing about Jesus.

  143. That the message of Jesus who died on the cross and rose again continues to be proclaimed.

  144. What he cares about is that other people get a chance to know what he knows.

  145. That God is a loving God.

  146. That God is a forgiving God.

  147. Paul's life is consumed with this gospel agenda.

  148. With a Jesus agenda.

  149. Self-preservation, comfort, doesn't matter.

  150. Not important.

  151. Reputation, doesn't matter.

  152. Have a look at verse 14.

  153. Because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord

  154. and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

  155. It's true, some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.

  156. The latter do so out of love, knowing that I'm put here for the defense of the gospel.

  157. The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely,

  158. supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I'm in change.

  159. He's excited because while his ministry is limited, he's only got one person at a time that he can talk to.

  160. And even them he's been talking to about Jesus.

  161. He's excited that while he can't be out on the street corners preaching,

  162. while he can't be in the synagogue talking to people about how amazing Jesus is,

  163. other people are doing it.

  164. Other people are taking on the job.

  165. His reputation as the gun speaker, as the amazing evangelist, as the celebrity pastor,

  166. is probably shrinking because these new people are stepping up and taking on all the roles that he used to have.

  167. And what's his response?

  168. Great.

  169. It's not about me.

  170. Even when people are preaching with mixed motives.

  171. Did you catch that?

  172. Some people are preaching Jesus, hoping that somehow it's going to cause trouble for Paul.

  173. And how does he respond?

  174. Verse 18.

  175. But what does it matter?

  176. The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true,

  177. Christ is preached.

  178. And because of this, I rejoice.

  179. What does it matter?

  180. He's in prison.

  181. These guys are preaching Jesus with some weird mixed motive,

  182. hoping it's going to make his life more difficult.

  183. And he's like, this is amazing.

  184. Because people are hearing about Jesus.

  185. His life is so consumed with a desire to see the gospel go forward that he just wants people to meet Jesus.

  186. He doesn't care if he's the one who gets to tell them.

  187. He doesn't care if him being in prison is the means by which that happens.

  188. Because the deepest desire of his heart, the thing that matters most to him,

  189. is that Jesus is preached.

  190. And because that is happening, even in shackles, he rejoices.

  191. He's still joyful even as he suffers.

  192. And he goes on, verse 18, second half.

  193. It says,

  194. He wants more than anything else for his life to adequately point to Jesus as his saviour,

  195. as his treasure, as his joy.

  196. And his only fear is that he would fail at that.

  197. He's not scared of prison.

  198. He's not scared of physical pain, of emotional pain, of struggle in life.

  199. His fear is that he would fail to adequately point to the one that is his source of joy.

  200. Jesus.

  201. And yet even in that fear, he eagerly expects and hopes that he'll be strengthened by the Spirit,

  202. that he'll be able to stand firm.

  203. Whether that's in his death or in his release and further ministry.

  204. He's confident God will sustain him and satisfy him, regardless of his situation.

  205. So that Jesus is exalted.

  206. And so he keeps rejoicing.

  207. In his arrest, in his struggle, in his limitation.

  208. I mean, his life is so full of joy, it seems illogical.

  209. I mean, he's the quintessential, annoying, joyful person.

  210. In your moment of deepest anguish, he would be smiling, ready for a hug or a high five.

  211. I sometimes wonder if the Philippians who knew him well would have received this letter,

  212. opened it up and been reading it and started to ask the question whether or not Paul had lost his grip on reality.

  213. Or whether they were wondering if, you know, maybe he's lost a few marbles and, you know, he doesn't know what's going on.

  214. And so he's sitting in prison singing out of blissful ignorance.

  215. He doesn't actually understand the intensity of what's going on.

  216. He doesn't understand that he's potentially about to die.

  217. He doesn't understand how serious this is.

  218. But that's not his issue.

  219. Because there's plenty of places in the New Testament where we get a glimpse into the suffering that Paul experienced

  220. and the personal anguish that he went through.

  221. He knows what's going on.

  222. Even here in verse 20, he knows that he requires a degree of courage if he's going to stand firm.

  223. He asks the Philippians to pray for him so that he can remain joyful in Jesus,

  224. so that he can continue to point to Jesus and celebrate the gospel being proclaimed,

  225. even when he doesn't get to be a part of it, even when he's stuck in chains himself.

  226. See, his joy in this passage is not a denial of his situation.

  227. It's a perspective that's so transformed by the gospel

  228. that his circumstances are no longer the main thing.

  229. They're no longer the starting point for him when he measures whether or not his life is satisfying or fulfilling

  230. or what he hoped it would be.

  231. Having met Jesus in the gospel,

  232. having discovered a God who loves him unconditionally,

  233. a God who guarantees his eternal future,

  234. that is now all that matters.

  235. Gospel joy is not a denial of the challenges that you face in your life.

  236. Gospel joy is not about pretending that things don't hurt when they do.

  237. We don't get the kind of joy that Paul has here by pretending that our relationships aren't broken,

  238. by ignoring the fact that we don't have the money we need to pay the bills,

  239. or just being blissfully ignorant about whatever struggles are in your life.

  240. Gospel joy is found in having our priorities so transformed

  241. that our joy is no longer tied to our circumstances,

  242. it's tied to Jesus.

  243. In our pain,

  244. in our sadness,

  245. in our struggle in day-to-day life,

  246. we can have something more important.

  247. The one who died for us and rose again.

  248. The unconditional love of a heavenly father.

  249. Paul summarises what it looks like to have your perspective shaped in verse 21.

  250. This is his life credo.

  251. He says,

  252. For to me,

  253. to live is Christ,

  254. and to die is gain.

  255. It's a great memory verse.

  256. I'm sure you've heard it before.

  257. We love it.

  258. Amen, we think.

  259. For me,

  260. to live is Christ.

  261. No, it's not.

  262. It's just not.

  263. I wish it was.

  264. But we're just not even close.

  265. Even just as a hypothetical,

  266. I know that this would not be my response if I was in Paul's situation.

  267. I would be whinging,

  268. complaining,

  269. yelling at God.

  270. I know in my life now how controlled I am

  271. by my day-to-day circumstances.

  272. I know that my joy levels fluctuate based on

  273. what kind of food I got to eat today,

  274. how bad the traffic was on the way to work,

  275. how stressful things are,

  276. how many things I have going on.

  277. But not for Paul.

  278. For him,

  279. to live is Christ.

  280. It's all about Jesus.

  281. Everything,

  282. to die even,

  283. is a gain because he would get Jesus.

  284. His whole life

  285. is consumed

  286. with a heart's desire to see Jesus exalted.

  287. And so joy and satisfaction

  288. and the measure of fulfilment in his life

  289. are no longer connected to

  290. transient comfort or control

  291. or situation or circumstance.

  292. Now it's just about Jesus.

  293. Now his joy is attached

  294. to a desire that is guaranteed.

  295. His deepest desire

  296. is that Christ would be exalted.

  297. And God's will

  298. in his creation

  299. is that Christ would be exalted.

  300. What God is doing

  301. is revealing Jesus

  302. so that one day

  303. every knee will bow

  304. and every tongue confess

  305. that he is Lord

  306. and Paul's joy

  307. is now wrapped up

  308. in that unstoppable direction.

  309. His joy is now inevitable.

  310. Because God himself

  311. has guaranteed to do

  312. what Paul desires most.

  313. I mean,

  314. how do you even stop joy

  315. for someone like this?

  316. How do you make him,

  317. you know,

  318. less annoyingly joyful?

  319. You can imprison them,

  320. beat them,

  321. they'll just rejoice

  322. because nothing's changed.

  323. They're still loved by God.

  324. They still have Jesus with them

  325. in their circumstance.

  326. They still know

  327. that he's being proclaimed

  328. even if they're not the ones

  329. who get to do it

  330. because God's going to make it happen.

  331. You can kill them

  332. but then they see that as a win

  333. because then they get to go to heaven

  334. and they get Jesus

  335. without any distractions,

  336. without any of the bad circumstances.

  337. They get all the good stuff

  338. and nothing bad

  339. so they rejoice even more.

  340. His source of joy

  341. is immovable.

  342. It can't be taken away from him.

  343. The killer of joy

  344. is disappointment.

  345. It's when what you desire most

  346. doesn't happen.

  347. You don't get the thing

  348. that you care about.

  349. And so for the Christian,

  350. the only possible joy killer

  351. would be if there was some enemy

  352. that was powerful enough

  353. to stop Jesus being exalted.

  354. Some enemy that was powerful enough

  355. to stop people from proclaiming Jesus,

  356. stop people from knowing

  357. and treasuring him.

  358. And suffering can't do it.

  359. Hardship can't do it.

  360. In fact, the church often grows quickest

  361. and most dramatically

  362. when the church suffers.

  363. The ancient historian Tertullian wrote

  364. that the blood of the martyrs

  365. is the seed of the church.

  366. What he was referring to

  367. was that basically

  368. all of the key extreme growth movements

  369. in Christian history

  370. were preceded by extreme persecution,

  371. by the murdering of Christians,

  372. the imprisoning of Christians.

  373. Because what happens then

  374. is these annoyingly joyful people

  375. continue to be annoyingly joyful,

  376. even though everything about their lives

  377. says they shouldn't be.

  378. And everybody else looks at that

  379. and says there's something there.

  380. And that something is Jesus.

  381. When we suffer,

  382. but continue to rejoice

  383. because Jesus is all satisfying,

  384. Jesus is exalted

  385. and others come in to know

  386. and taste and experience

  387. the same joy that we have as Christians.

  388. Suffering

  389. is not the enemy.

  390. In fact,

  391. the greatest enemy

  392. to your joy as a Christian

  393. is comfort.

  394. The thing that's most likely

  395. to distract you

  396. from an all-consuming

  397. gospel passion

  398. is comfort.

  399. Self-sufficiency,

  400. selfish ambition.

  401. The greatest enemy

  402. of your joy

  403. is not your circumstance

  404. right now,

  405. but it's a diluted

  406. or a lukewarm affection

  407. for Jesus.

  408. It's the heart that says,

  409. yeah,

  410. I love Jesus with everything,

  411. but it's also really important

  412. to me in my life

  413. to look after

  414. my kids' future.

  415. It's the heart that says,

  416. Jesus is number one

  417. and my life

  418. is all about him,

  419. but I've just got to get

  420. through these exams first.

  421. It's the heart that says,

  422. God,

  423. I want to be poured out

  424. for your service

  425. so long as it's not

  426. too painful.

  427. When our hearts

  428. wander away

  429. from loving Jesus

  430. as the centerpiece

  431. of all that we are,

  432. then all that's left for us

  433. for meaning,

  434. for purpose,

  435. for joy,

  436. is the flippant

  437. and temporary circumstances

  438. that we have to face

  439. day to day.

  440. Paul doesn't write this lightly.

  441. He's not some guy

  442. who had a sheltered life

  443. in a simple world.

  444. He knows what suffering is.

  445. He knows what it is

  446. to experience anguish

  447. and anxiety,

  448. grief,

  449. but still,

  450. he is annoyingly joyful.

  451. in all of his circumstances,

  452. his heart remains consumed

  453. with a love for Jesus,

  454. with a satisfaction in Jesus.

  455. His life stays consumed

  456. by a gospel ambition,

  457. a desire for Jesus

  458. to be the main thing.

  459. And the result of that

  460. is joy.

  461. joy.

  462. That's how he sits in prison

  463. and sings.

  464. That's how he faces death

  465. and he says,

  466. it's a tough choice for me

  467. because death is a big win.

  468. But you know what?

  469. I'm going to put up

  470. with this suffering

  471. so that you get more joy,

  472. so that you learn more

  473. of what it is

  474. to love and treasure Jesus.

  475. Jesus is enough

  476. for us to rejoice

  477. even as we weep,

  478. even as we suffer.

  479. The issue for us

  480. isn't that we've tried Jesus

  481. and there's just other things

  482. that are more appealing.

  483. The issue isn't that

  484. we've tried Jesus

  485. and he's just not as satisfying

  486. as we expected.

  487. The issue is that

  488. most of us have never

  489. really given Jesus everything.

  490. The idea of it sounds great,

  491. to live as Christ.

  492. But most of us

  493. have never really

  494. handed over ambition,

  495. handed over our very selves

  496. and said,

  497. God, do what you want.

  498. Stick me in prison,

  499. I'll sing.

  500. If you afflict me

  501. with physical illness,

  502. I'll rejoice.

  503. When I was younger,

  504. I remember learning to skate.

  505. I've told you before,

  506. I'm one of three brothers,

  507. I've got sisters as well,

  508. but three brothers

  509. and I was the least coordinated

  510. by a country mile.

  511. I had a little brother

  512. who was five years younger than me

  513. and so it shouldn't have been

  514. a competition,

  515. but five minutes after

  516. we tried anything,

  517. he was better at it than I was.

  518. And one of the things

  519. I learned as a young person

  520. was skating.

  521. And it resulted

  522. in a whole bunch of injuries

  523. that I'm still paying for now.

  524. But one of the things

  525. that you have to learn

  526. when you're learning to skate

  527. is what it is to drop in

  528. on a ramp.

  529. What that means is

  530. you stand on the top of a ramp,

  531. you put your skateboard

  532. on the edge of it,

  533. kind of dangling off the side,

  534. you put your back foot on

  535. and you put your front foot on

  536. and at this point

  537. there are two options.

  538. Go all in

  539. or hesitate

  540. and train wreck.

  541. If you hesitate

  542. even a little bit,

  543. I can guarantee

  544. all you'll get

  545. is bruises and bumps,

  546. grazes,

  547. headaches,

  548. stitches.

  549. But if you go all in

  550. and only when you go all in

  551. will you experience

  552. the crazy adrenaline

  553. and exhilaration

  554. of kind of free-falling

  555. but on purpose

  556. and rolling away,

  557. you'll probably still go home

  558. at the end of the day

  559. with bumps

  560. and bruises

  561. and grazes,

  562. maybe even stitches,

  563. but you'll be smiling

  564. because it's an amazing feeling.

  565. If you follow Jesus

  566. but not with everything,

  567. if you make him

  568. your almost treasure

  569. as long as you can keep

  570. a couple of other things

  571. in your life,

  572. if you make him

  573. your life's ambition

  574. as long as it doesn't push out

  575. this other thing

  576. that you really care about,

  577. your experience

  578. of being a Christian

  579. will be just

  580. the bumps

  581. and bruises

  582. and grazes

  583. and stitches

  584. because following Jesus

  585. is hard

  586. and that's part of the deal.

  587. but only

  588. if you hand your life

  589. over completely,

  590. if you surrender

  591. everything

  592. that you are

  593. and say it's yours,

  594. use it as you wish,

  595. will you be able

  596. to get those bumps

  597. and bruises

  598. and grazes

  599. and sicknesses

  600. and broken relationships

  601. and financial stresses

  602. and whatever else

  603. you face in life

  604. and do it

  605. with joy

  606. because even

  607. in all of that

  608. you will have Jesus.

  609. You will be loved.

  610. You will be seeing

  611. that which

  612. satisfies you

  613. more than anything else

  614. exalted

  615. in your suffering,

  616. in your struggle.

  617. now I'm not giving you

  618. specifics about

  619. what this might look like

  620. for you

  621. because we'll probably

  622. all have different things

  623. that we're trying

  624. to hold on to

  625. alongside Jesus.

  626. We'll all be using

  627. different things

  628. to dilute him

  629. and ultimately

  630. the answer for all of us

  631. is to come back

  632. to the gospel,

  633. to look to the one

  634. who died for us

  635. while we were still

  636. his enemies,

  637. look to the one

  638. who rose again

  639. and sits on the throne

  640. over all creation

  641. and find that he's worthy

  642. of everything

  643. or nothing.

  644. Find that he's sufficient

  645. in all circumstances

  646. or none.

  647. Find that he's satisfying

  648. above anything else.

  649. The issue is not

  650. that we have tried him

  651. and found him unsatisfying,

  652. the issue is that

  653. we haven't gone all in.

  654. Psalm 34 verse 7

    Psalms 34:7

  655. says,

  656. Taste and see

  657. that the Lord is good.

  658. What are you holding on to

  659. in your life

  660. that's now a barrier

  661. to your joy?

  662. What are you diluting

  663. your own satisfaction with?

  664. Because Jesus offers

  665. immovable joy.

  666. Incomparable joy.

  667. Inevitable joy.

  668. Imagine if just a few of us

  669. were consumed

  670. with the gospel

  671. like this.

  672. Imagine the difference

  673. that we would make

  674. in this community.

  675. But also,

  676. imagine

  677. just how satisfying

  678. it would be.

  679. Imagine the joy

  680. that God would have

  681. for us

  682. in our day-to-day life,

  683. in the good,

  684. in the bad,

  685. in the struggle.

  686. if we were consumed

  687. with the desire

  688. that Jesus,

  689. our treasure,

  690. our saviour,

  691. be exalted

  692. as the all-satisfying one,

  693. the only satisfying one.

  694. That's the joy

  695. that God desires for you.

  696. That's the joy

  697. that God offers

  698. to you.

  699. So what do you need

  700. to let go of

  701. so you can grab

  702. hold of Him?

  703. Let's pray.

  704. Father God,

  705. we want to

  706. admit that

  707. even though

  708. it seems so obvious,

  709. even though

  710. there's a part of us

  711. that really does

  712. want to say

  713. with conviction

  714. to live as Christ,

  715. that there are so many

  716. things in our lives

  717. that we hold on to.

  718. There are ambitions

  719. that we place

  720. before you.

  721. We treasure

  722. our own comfort.

  723. We treasure

  724. achievement.

  725. God,

  726. there are innumerable

  727. things that we

  728. treasure.

  729. Give us eyes

  730. to see that

  731. Jesus is better.

  732. Give us eyes

  733. to see that

  734. we sabotage

  735. our own joy

  736. by doing it.

  737. help us

  738. to grasp

  739. what it is

  740. that you love

  741. people like us

  742. and enable us

  743. to come to you

  744. confident

  745. that we will

  746. not be disappointed,

  747. that in you

  748. our deepest

  749. hearts'

  750. desires are met

  751. and surpassed.

  752. In you

  753. there is joy

  754. unmatched.

  755. Father,

  756. fill us

  757. with that

  758. annoying joy

  759. so that the

  760. world around us

  761. might know

  762. that there is

  763. none like you.

  764. Thank you for

  765. Jesus.

  766. Amen.
