  1. Sometimes we get in the habit of trying to make bad things seem good.

  2. My son has a gift for this.

  3. When he gets in trouble, we try and have a conversation to make sure that he understands what's gone wrong.

  4. And usually the conversation begins with me asking him,

  5. Bailey, why are you in trouble?

  6. What have you done that's made Daddy have to punish you?

  7. And he has this incredible gift to take what he's actually done and twist it into a more positive light.

  8. Well, so instead of punching his brother, he was trying to stop him from doing something naughty.

  9. Instead of stealing something out of the cupboard that's not his, he was helping with the cooking.

  10. No matter how he spins it, he's still doing the wrong thing.

  11. But it is incredible how he can take something which is bad and try and make it seem good.

  12. We do it the same when we're trying to convince our kids to eat foods that don't taste nice,

  13. like broccoli or Brussels sprouts.

  14. If you like them, we forgive you.

  15. We know the kid's not going to like them, so we try and trick them.

  16. We drown it in butter or in cheese or in tomato sauce or in something that is good to their taste

  17. to somehow convince them that this other thing tastes good as well.

  18. We take bad things and we try and make them good.

  19. You could be forgiven if you've been here for the last couple of weeks of this series

  20. to feel like we're trying that same trick in this series.

  21. We've got a series called Joy for Everyone.

  22. And so far, we've been encouraged that there's joy in relationships.

  23. Now, you might say difficult but plausible.

  24. Last week, we said that there was joy in suffering.

  25. And then today, joy in sacrificial service.

  26. So like I said, you might be forgiven for feeling like we're trying to take bad things and make them sound good.

  27. But stick with us.

  28. Let's be clear.

  29. When it comes to following Jesus, serving is part of the deal.

  30. It's not an optional extra.

  31. It's not a maybe for those who are particularly keen.

  32. It goes with the territory.

  33. If you've been loved by God, forgiven by God, then the expectation is that you serve Him.

  34. Verse 1 that the kids read out for us.

  35. This is from Philippians 2.

  36. If you've got your Bible there, you can open it up.

  37. If not, as you heard, it would be really encouraging to them

  38. because they're going to be bringing their Bibles if we brought our Bibles as well.

  39. Philippians 2, verse 1.

    Philippians 2:1

  40. So the gospel demands that having received so much from God,

  41. that the right response is to show that same kind of love to other people.

  42. And Paul gets explicit about what that looks like in verse 3.

  43. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.

  44. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves,

  45. not looking to your own interests, but each of you to the interests of others.

  46. Value others above yourself.

  47. That's what it looks like to respond to God's generosity,

  48. not looking out for yourself, not looking to your own interests.

  49. Now, as basic as that might sound, as noble and obvious as that might sound,

  50. it's much harder to deliver on.

  51. It's much harder to actually live out.

  52. And as if it's not difficult enough, Paul takes it up the level in verse 5

  53. when he says we need to have the same mindset as Jesus himself.

  54. So it's not just be selfless anymore.

  55. It's be Jesus selfless, like completely selfless,

  56. always putting other people first, seeking their good.

  57. And I mean, by definition, serving people, sacrificing is costly.

  58. That's what it means.

  59. It means giving something up for someone else.

  60. I mean, it requires self-denial.

  61. It requires that you miss out on something

  62. because you're busy doing something for somebody else.

  63. And Paul wants to convince us that the gospel can make doing that a source of joy.

  64. How?

  65. It is costly.

  66. He's not denying that.

  67. But Paul wants to convince us that the message of Jesus can take sacrifice,

  68. can take giving up and missing out

  69. and make that something that is deeply satisfying and joyful.

  70. How?

  71. Well, firstly, the gospel reveals.

  72. Have a look at verse 5.

  73. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus,

  74. who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God

  75. something to be used to his own advantage.

  76. What the gospel does is not just tell us a story about what happened,

  77. but it actually reveals who God is.

  78. It reveals what Jesus is like.

  79. It shows us that he is God,

  80. that he's all-knowing, he's all-powerful, he's all-creating, he's holy.

  81. He's everything God is because Jesus is God.

  82. Have a look again.

  83. Being in very nature God, verse 6,

  84. The gospel shows us that the Jesus who is fully God enters our world,

  85. becomes a man and an unimpressive man at that.

  86. He's arrested, tortured, unjustly tried and crucified

  87. by the people that he created.

  88. And all of that is in perfect obedience to his heavenly father.

  89. This is the gospel.

  90. That Jesus came from heaven, lived a perfect life, died in our place,

  91. and then, verse 9,

  92. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place,

  93. gave him the name that is above every name,

  94. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth

  95. and under the earth,

  96. and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord

  97. to the glory of God the Father.

  98. Therefore, because of his perfect obedience,

  99. because of his selfless service,

  100. because of his sacrifice,

  101. God exalts Jesus and gives him the name above every name

  102. so that one day every knee will bow to him.

  103. Every tongue will acknowledge that he is the king,

  104. that he is the rightful ruler over all creation.

  105. The gospel transforms service and sacrifice

  106. by revealing who Jesus is,

  107. who it is that we follow,

  108. who it is that demands that we sacrifice and serve in the first place.

  109. I mean, the gospel shows us that the one who demands

  110. selfless, humble, sacrificial service of others

  111. is none other than the one who sits on the throne

  112. over all creation, having served,

  113. and now is exalted with all authority

  114. and is therefore worthy of at least

  115. sacrificial service from those who claim to follow him.

  116. He sits in authority over all creation.

  117. He has the right to demand anything from us.

  118. The gospel shows us who it is who is asking.

  119. It's not a suggestion from somebody

  120. who's just trying to maybe guide us in a good way to live.

  121. It's God who created us.

  122. It's Jesus who died for us and rose again.

  123. It's Jesus who sits on the throne with all authority.

  124. Jesus who is God made the decision to serve us.

  125. He didn't have to.

  126. It was a choice.

  127. It was a decision.

  128. He could have just stayed in heaven

  129. and looked after number one

  130. because he is literally number one.

  131. He is the name above every other name.

  132. It would have been reasonable and right

  133. for him to just stay in heaven

  134. and look after himself

  135. because he is the most important.

  136. He is the most worthy.

  137. But he did not consider his position.

  138. He did not consider his equality with God

  139. something that was there just for his own advantage.

  140. He doesn't just demand service from us.

  141. He does demand it

  142. but he doesn't just demand it.

  143. He models it to us.

  144. God serves us

  145. at incredible personal cost.

  146. And yet we find it difficult

  147. to put our family

  148. before ourselves

  149. or our friends

  150. let alone our enemies.

  151. The Bible tells us

  152. that when we were still his enemies

  153. Christ died for us.

  154. That as Jesus hung on the cross

  155. he served and prayed for those

  156. that put him there.

  157. And somehow

  158. he did it with joy.

  159. Hebrews 12 tells us

  160. that it was because of the joy

  161. set before him

  162. that he endured the cross.

  163. I mean let that mess with your head

  164. just for a second.

  165. All the pain and suffering

  166. of that first Easter

  167. everything that Jesus went through

  168. the cost that he paid

  169. his suffering and his anguish

  170. was actually a path of joy.

  171. Just let that sit for a second.

  172. The gospel demands

  173. sacrifice and service

  174. from those who claim to follow Jesus

  175. but it also reveals

  176. the God who demands it from us

  177. to motivate us

  178. to show us that it's reasonable

  179. for him to demand that from us.

  180. The gospel strikes at the heart

  181. of the two main reasons

  182. we find it difficult

  183. to serve and sacrifice for others.

  184. Fear and selfishness.

  185. Fear and selfishness.

  186. Have a look at verse 12.

  187. Therefore my dear brothers

  188. as you have always obeyed

  189. not only in my presence

  190. but now much more in my absence

  191. continue to work out your salvation

  192. with fear and trembling

  193. for it is God who works in you

  194. to will and to act

  195. in order to fulfill

  196. his good purpose.

  197. It's another therefore.

  198. It's pointing us to what was just before.

  199. Because of who Jesus is

  200. because of what he's done

  201. work out your salvation

  202. with fear and trembling.

  203. Now this is really really important.

  204. These are two verses

  205. that it's easy to trip up on.

  206. This isn't a baton passing.

  207. This isn't God saying

  208. I've served

  209. I've loved

  210. now it's your turn.

  211. This isn't God saying

  212. I've done my bit

  213. and I've forgiven you

  214. and I've loved you

  215. and I've given you a clean slate

  216. and a second chance

  217. now put some effort in.

  218. Now kind of you know

  219. live up to the standard

  220. that I require of you.

  221. That's not it.

  222. In these verses

  223. at the same time

  224. you've got God

  225. working in us

  226. to will

  227. that is to want to do

  228. the right thing

  229. to want to serve

  230. and empowering us

  231. to do the action as well.

  232. He enables

  233. and empowers

  234. and we're told

  235. to work

  236. together

  237. at the same time.

  238. This isn't an excuse

  239. to be lazy.

  240. But have you ever wondered

  241. why the words

  242. fear and trembling?

  243. Paul's just given

  244. one of the most

  245. incredible descriptions

  246. of how unconditional

  247. God's love is.

  248. About the incredible price

  249. that Jesus paid

  250. for people who didn't deserve it

  251. and then he says

  252. with fear and trembling.

  253. What does fear and trembling

  254. have to do with grace?

  255. Have to do with

  256. the unconditional gift

  257. of God for you?

  258. What is there to fear

  259. if we're forgiven?

  260. The gospel message

  261. is the good news

  262. that Jesus

  263. did all that he did

  264. so that we could be

  265. in a relationship

  266. with God.

  267. a perfect God

  268. a powerful God

  269. a holy God

  270. a righteous God

  271. a God who is just.

  272. The gospel is not

  273. the message

  274. that we just got out

  275. of getting in trouble.

  276. The gospel is Jesus

  277. drawing into a relationship

  278. with the almighty creator.

  279. God is not a domesticated God

  280. once you hear the gospel.

  281. He doesn't go from

  282. being big and intimidating

  283. to being small and fluffy

  284. just because of Jesus.

  285. He is a fierce lion.

  286. C.S. Lewis describes him

  287. in the Narnia series

  288. by saying he's good

  289. but he's not safe.

  290. He is still God.

  291. He is still powerful

  292. and mighty

  293. and he's to be treated

  294. with awe

  295. and reverence

  296. fitting for the creator

  297. and sustainer

  298. of all things.

  299. The gospel

  300. motivates us

  301. out of being

  302. self-seeking

  303. out of pursuing

  304. our own gain in life

  305. as the most important thing

  306. by showing us

  307. the majesty

  308. of the one

  309. we claim to serve.

  310. By showing us

  311. the worthiness

  312. of the God

  313. who asks that we would

  314. serve on his behalf.

  315. It's hard

  316. to be selfish.

  317. It's hard

  318. to see yourself

  319. as more important

  320. or more valuable

  321. than others

  322. when you stand

  323. in the presence

  324. of the God

  325. who created you.

  326. The God

  327. who sent his son

  328. to die in your place.

  329. The God

  330. who reigns

  331. over all of creation.

  332. The God

  333. who paid

  334. the highest price

  335. just so that

  336. you could know

  337. him

  338. and know

  339. the joy

  340. of being loved.

  341. God

  342. and the gospel

  343. crushes our fear

  344. because as Paul

  345. says somewhere else

  346. if God gave

  347. Jesus

  348. if God gave

  349. that which cost

  350. the most

  351. if God gave

  352. the bit

  353. that was hardest

  354. to give

  355. that mattered

  356. most to him

  357. how will he not

  358. also

  359. along with him

  360. graciously give us

  361. all things?

  362. the fear

  363. that makes us

  364. not serve

  365. and not sacrifice

  366. is the fear

  367. that if I give

  368. this up

  369. I'll miss out.

  370. If I put you

  371. first

  372. who's going to

  373. look after me?

  374. If I spend

  375. all my time

  376. looking after

  377. other people's

  378. needs

  379. then

  380. does that mean

  381. I'll just spend

  382. all my life

  383. missing out?

  384. I'll spend

  385. all of my life

  386. going without?

  387. What the gospel

  388. does

  389. is it shows me

  390. who I serve

  391. and who serves

  392. me.

  393. As it reveals

  394. God

  395. who I sit

  396. under

  397. and who I have

  398. given my allegiance

  399. to

  400. and who I seek

  401. to obey

  402. it also reveals

  403. the God

  404. who is committed

  405. to me

  406. who is committed

  407. to my good

  408. who has proved

  409. that in sending

  410. his son Jesus

  411. the gospel

  412. shows me

  413. who I'm called

  414. to follow

  415. and who loves

  416. and provides

  417. for me

  418. in every way.

  419. There is no fear

  420. for those

  421. who are loved

  422. by God

  423. because he has

  424. proved he will

  425. give you the good

  426. that you need.

  427. He will never

  428. hold good things

  429. back from us

  430. and this transforms

  431. our perspective

  432. when it comes

  433. to serving

  434. and sacrificing.

  435. Do you remember

  436. what life was like

  437. for the Philippians?

  438. They lived

  439. under the persecution

  440. of the Roman Empire.

  441. The same people

  442. who had imprisoned

  443. Paul who was writing

  444. this letter

  445. for preaching Jesus.

  446. There would have been

  447. social consequences,

  448. economic consequences

  449. for being a Christian

  450. and yet

  451. having called them

  452. to gospel-shaped

  453. service and sacrifice,

  454. Paul turns the knife

  455. even more

  456. and raises the bar

  457. in verse 14.

  458. Do everything

  459. without grumbling

  460. or arguing

  461. so that you may

  462. become blameless

  463. and pure,

  464. children of God

  465. without fault

  466. in a warped

  467. and crooked generation.

  468. Then you will shine

  469. among them

  470. like stars in the sky

  471. as you hold firmly

  472. to the word of life

  473. and then I will be able

  474. to boast

  475. on the day of Christ

  476. that I did not run

  477. or labor in vain.

  478. But even if I am

  479. being poured out

  480. like a drink offering

  481. on the sacrifice

  482. and service

  483. coming from your faith,

  484. I am glad

  485. and rejoice

  486. with all of you.

  487. So you too

  488. should be glad

  489. and rejoice with me.

  490. Do it without complaining.

  491. Do it without grumbling.

  492. Give up things

  493. that matter to you.

  494. Miss out on things

  495. that matter to you

  496. without grumbling

  497. or complaining.

  498. Wouldn't you permit them

  499. just a little bit

  500. of complaining?

  501. I mean we've already

  502. kind of conceded

  503. that service

  504. and sacrifice

  505. and in their case

  506. dealing with

  507. the oppression

  508. of people

  509. is a difficult situation.

  510. haven't we agreed

  511. that sacrifice

  512. is costly?

  513. That there is loss

  514. associated with

  515. what's being asked

  516. of us here?

  517. So isn't complaining

  518. a reasonable response?

  519. Don't we normally

  520. reserve joy

  521. and gratitude

  522. for things

  523. that are enjoyable?

  524. Things where we win?

  525. Things where we get benefit?

  526. But that's just it.

  527. The gospel

  528. so transforms

  529. our perspective

  530. that selflessness

  531. and service

  532. and sacrifice

  533. what is costly

  534. what is difficult

  535. is actually a gift

  536. and a joy

  537. at the same time.

  538. Those who are loved

  539. by Jesus

  540. can pay great cost

  541. for the sake of others.

  542. Can love in a way

  543. that is personally

  544. expensive.

  545. and rejoice in it

  546. and see it as a gift

  547. from God.

  548. I mean complaining

  549. only makes sense

  550. if you don't have Jesus.

  551. Complaining makes sense

  552. because you're giving

  553. something up

  554. that you won't get back.

  555. But the message

  556. of the gospel

  557. is that in Jesus

  558. we have all we need.

  559. The message

  560. of this series

  561. is that ultimate joy

  562. is in knowing

  563. that God loves us

  564. unconditionally

  565. and being drawn

  566. into a relationship

  567. with him

  568. as his precious

  569. children

  570. in such a way

  571. that all other things

  572. are just peripheral.

  573. And so Paul

  574. can sit in prison

  575. with shackles on

  576. and rejoice

  577. because he has

  578. an immovable hope

  579. and satisfaction

  580. in an immovable savior.

  581. when we have Jesus

  582. complaining

  583. does it make sense

  584. because even if I

  585. give up my time

  586. give up my money

  587. give up my energy

  588. give up my

  589. relational energy

  590. my emotional energy

  591. give up whatever it is

  592. that I have

  593. to love

  594. and serve those

  595. around me

  596. I will still

  597. always have

  598. more than enough

  599. in Jesus.

  600. I will still

  601. always be loved

  602. unconditionally

  603. I will still

  604. always have

  605. the certain hope

  606. of the fact

  607. that God promises

  608. I will never

  609. be without

  610. what I need.

  611. God promises

  612. to not withhold

  613. good things

  614. and he proves it

  615. in sending Jesus.

  616. And so for a Christian

  617. complaining

  618. is illogical.

  619. What are we

  620. complaining about?

  621. We're full

  622. we have everything

  623. we need

  624. we have more

  625. than we need

  626. and no one

  627. and nothing

  628. can take that away.

  629. I mean even here

  630. Paul's getting explicit

  631. like he did last week

  632. to say even if he dies

  633. he's going to rejoice.

  634. That's what he means

  635. when he says

  636. he's being poured out

  637. he says I'll rejoice

  638. and you Philippians

  639. you too should rejoice.

  640. What is it

  641. that makes that possible?

  642. Is it just

  643. hey I've got heaven

  644. in the future

  645. so I don't need

  646. anything now

  647. attitude?

  648. Well it's at least

  649. that but I think

  650. there's something

  651. more here.

  652. Look back at the

  653. beginning of the

  654. passage.

  655. Verse 1

  656. follow the logic

  657. of what Paul

  658. is saying here.

  659. The gospel demand

  660. to serve

  661. and to put others

  662. first

  663. flows out of

  664. the gospel blessings

  665. of love

  666. and comfort

  667. and encouragement

  668. and even the spirit

  669. himself.

  670. They're connected

  671. they're inseparable

  672. it's those things

  673. that God

  674. gives you

  675. flowing in

  676. and overflowing

  677. and flowing

  678. through you

  679. that produces

  680. sacrificial service

  681. and

  682. it's in that

  683. Christ-like

  684. service

  685. that the joy

  686. of his love

  687. for you

  688. in the gospel

  689. is most

  690. fully experienced.

  691. Let's try

  692. and unpack this

  693. because this is

  694. so important.

  695. It's almost

  696. like when

  697. you begin

  698. a relationship

  699. with that

  700. special someone

  701. and you get

  702. this incredible

  703. joy from this

  704. person.

  705. They just seem

  706. to understand

  707. you,

  708. they love you,

  709. they put you

  710. first,

  711. you're just happier

  712. when they're around

  713. and there is so

  714. much joy

  715. in that relationship

  716. but have you

  717. noticed how

  718. when you get

  719. the opportunity

  720. to brag about

  721. that,

  722. your joy grows?

  723. When you get

  724. the opportunity

  725. to tell other

  726. people how amazing

  727. that person is

  728. and how much

  729. you enjoy them,

  730. it's almost

  731. like your awareness

  732. of how much

  733. enjoyment is there

  734. grows as you

  735. have to articulate

  736. it and tell other

  737. people it just,

  738. it gets bigger

  739. or it's like that

  740. time you discover

  741. an amazing restaurant

  742. that's hidden away

  743. in a laneway

  744. that no one else

  745. has ever been to

  746. and the food

  747. is fantastic

  748. and the atmosphere

  749. is perfect

  750. and it's the

  751. greatest culinary

  752. experience you've

  753. ever had

  754. and you love it

  755. but it's not

  756. until you take

  757. someone with you

  758. and they share

  759. that experience,

  760. they share that

  761. joy,

  762. that your joy

  763. kind of can

  764. reach its fullness.

  765. It's not that

  766. the first meal

  767. wasn't amazing

  768. but it's there's

  769. something extra

  770. when you get

  771. to give that joy

  772. to someone else,

  773. when you get

  774. to share it.

  775. See,

  776. when we get

  777. to share God's

  778. love for people

  779. by serving them,

  780. when we get

  781. to sacrifice

  782. and show God's

  783. love for people

  784. by putting

  785. their needs

  786. first,

  787. by valuing them

  788. the way that

  789. Christ does,

  790. when we get

  791. to see them

  792. experience

  793. God's love

  794. for them

  795. through us

  796. getting to

  797. serve,

  798. God is actually

  799. giving us

  800. a fuller

  801. experience

  802. of His love.

  803. I mean,

  804. being forgiven

  805. by God

  806. is incredible.

  807. Being loved

  808. by God,

  809. being guaranteed

  810. heaven,

  811. let's not sell

  812. that short,

  813. that is overwhelming

  814. and we could spend

  815. our whole lives

  816. exploring that

  817. amount of joy

  818. but God,

  819. because He is

  820. so generous

  821. and so gracious

  822. and just God,

  823. gives us the

  824. opportunity

  825. to understand

  826. it more fully

  827. by passing

  828. it on,

  829. by loving

  830. people in

  831. that same way,

  832. by putting us

  833. almost in His

  834. shoes when He

  835. came to us.

  836. Because we're

  837. getting to love

  838. them,

  839. not because

  840. they're love

  841. worthy or

  842. because they

  843. deserve it,

  844. but just

  845. because,

  846. that grows

  847. our confidence

  848. that,

  849. hey,

  850. that's how

  851. God loves

  852. me.

  853. Not if I'm

  854. good or bad,

  855. just because

  856. He chose

  857. to.

  858. And so that

  859. incredible joy

  860. is getting

  861. deeper and

  862. stronger.

  863. God has

  864. made it

  865. possible for

  866. serving and

  867. sacrificing and

  868. giving up and

  869. missing out to be

  870. an opportunity to

  871. get more

  872. engagement and a

  873. fuller encounter

  874. and experience of

  875. His incredible

  876. love for us in

  877. Jesus.

  878. isn't the

  879. gospel amazing

  880. that God can

  881. take something

  882. that seems bad

  883. by definition,

  884. that seems like

  885. you lose by

  886. definition,

  887. you have to

  888. give up and

  889. make it a win,

  890. make it an

  891. opportunity to

  892. encounter Him

  893. more fully.

  894. Full gospel

  895. joy,

  896. full Jesus

  897. joy is not

  898. found in just

  899. being a recipient

  900. from God,

  901. but in when

  902. what you have

  903. received,

  904. enables you to

  905. serve others on

  906. Jesus' behalf,

  907. when you get to

  908. be the conduit

  909. for other people

  910. to experience

  911. God's unconditional

  912. love,

  913. when you get to

  914. be the connection

  915. point, the

  916. instrument,

  917. there can be

  918. joy in

  919. self-denying

  920. sacrificial

  921. service,

  922. because ultimately

  923. it's just a

  924. full expression of

  925. the gospel joy

  926. that you received

  927. when you placed

  928. your trust in

  929. Jesus,

  930. when you heard

  931. that He loved

  932. you, even

  933. though you

  934. didn't deserve

  935. it.

  936. If serving

  937. joyfully is a

  938. struggle for

  939. you personally,

  940. could it be

  941. that you see

  942. serving as a

  943. task that has

  944. nothing to do

  945. with the gospel?

  946. could it be that

  947. you've separated

  948. out, Jesus

  949. loves me and

  950. I need to

  951. serve?

  952. And so

  953. you've separated

  954. the source of

  955. joy from the

  956. task that He's

  957. put in front of

  958. you and of

  959. course it's going

  960. to be hard

  961. work.

  962. You've kind of

  963. cut yourself off

  964. from the good

  965. bit and you're

  966. just holding on

  967. to the giving

  968. up and

  969. sacrificing bit.

  970. For service

  971. and sacrifice

  972. to be joyful,

  973. it's got to be

  974. connected to the

  975. way that God

  976. has loved you

  977. and served you

  978. in Jesus.

  979. It's got to be

  980. the result of

  981. what God has

  982. done for you.

  983. It's got to be

  984. the result of

  985. the sacrifice

  986. and service

  987. that God has

  988. given you.

  989. Christian joy

  990. is always

  991. Jesus' joy.

  992. I said it

  993. before, I can't

  994. remember if I

  995. said it in the

  996. morning, but

  997. week one I

  998. said this series

  999. could have been

  1000. called Jesus

  1001. for Everyone

  1002. because Jesus

  1003. is the source

  1004. of joy.

  1005. Each week

  1006. Paul is

  1007. unpacking ways

  1008. that Jesus

  1009. has chosen

  1010. to give us

  1011. access to

  1012. more of him

  1013. in the

  1014. Christian life

  1015. and here

  1016. he is calling

  1017. you to serve

  1018. others

  1019. and at the

  1020. same time

  1021. calling you

  1022. to know him

  1023. better as you

  1024. do it.

  1025. Calling you to

  1026. know his love

  1027. more fully as

  1028. you do it.

  1029. Service is an

  1030. opportunity for

  1031. joy when in it

  1032. you grab hold

  1033. of the opportunity

  1034. to engage the

  1035. Christ who

  1036. loved and

  1037. served you.

  1038. Serving and

  1039. sacrificing is

  1040. an opportunity

  1041. for joy when

  1042. it is done in

  1043. the strength

  1044. and love that

  1045. has come to

  1046. you first

  1047. through the

  1048. cross.

  1049. This isn't

  1050. about making

  1051. bad things

  1052. good.

  1053. This is about

  1054. encountering the

  1055. greatest thing

  1056. where he has

  1057. chosen to

  1058. reveal himself

  1059. in serving

  1060. just like he

  1061. did.

  1062. Let's pray

  1063. that God

  1064. might shift

  1065. our hearts

  1066. and our

  1067. eyes to

  1068. see him

  1069. and to

  1070. chase him

  1071. and to

  1072. pursue him

  1073. and to

  1074. find him

  1075. in serving

  1076. as he

  1077. demands.

  1078. Father God

  1079. I want to

  1080. ask that

  1081. you would

  1082. give us

  1083. eyes to

  1084. recognize

  1085. what it

  1086. means to

  1087. follow you

  1088. what it

  1089. means to

  1090. embrace all

  1091. of the good

  1092. gifts that

  1093. you have

  1094. placed in

  1095. our lives

  1096. including

  1097. the

  1098. opportunities

  1099. to serve

  1100. including

  1101. the

  1102. opportunities

  1103. to go

  1104. without

  1105. to sacrifice

  1106. to miss

  1107. out so

  1108. that others

  1109. might be

  1110. blessed and

  1111. loved in

  1112. the ways

  1113. that we

  1114. have been.

  1115. God I

  1116. want to

  1117. thank you

  1118. for including

  1119. us in

  1120. what you're

  1121. doing not

  1122. because you

  1123. need us

  1124. but for

  1125. our sake

  1126. help us

  1127. to recognize

  1128. that the

  1129. agenda is

  1130. always that

  1131. we might

  1132. know you

  1133. better

  1134. that we

  1135. might taste

  1136. more of

  1137. your goodness

  1138. that we

  1139. might be

  1140. more fully

  1141. satisfied in

  1142. you as we

  1143. understand what

  1144. it is to

  1145. love unconditionally

  1146. what it is to

  1147. serve and to

  1148. sacrifice confident

  1149. that we still

  1150. have all we

  1151. need in you

  1152. God please

  1153. fill us with

  1154. your love and

  1155. grace in such

  1156. a way that it

  1157. just flows out

  1158. of us that

  1159. our service

  1160. might be

  1161. wholehearted

  1162. humble

  1163. sacrificial and

  1164. joyful and

  1165. we pray it in

  1166. Jesus name

  1167. Amen
