  1. Amen, everyone.

  2. Father's Day is fast approaching, in case you weren't aware of that,

  3. and haven't made that all-important purchase.

  4. So I'm going to make a recommendation for you here.

  5. It's called, it's a book called

  6. The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook.

  7. It's a great recommendation.

  8. It's a great book to gather.

  9. It's a book that lists a number of dangerous situations

  10. that you can find yourself in

  11. and how to deal with those dangerous situations.

  12. It's a great blokey book to stick on a bookshelf or something like that.

  13. It's actually a serious book.

  14. These guys are not having a lend to themselves.

  15. They're serious sort of survival trainer kind of guys.

  16. And when I say dangerous situations, I mean dangerous situations.

  17. For instance, page 46.

  18. How, this is full of wisdom, right?

  19. How to fend off a shark.

  20. We all need to know that.

  21. Page 64.

  22. How to deal with a charging bull.

  23. Page 57.

  24. How to wrestle free from an alligator.

  25. Which includes the immortal line.

  26. I love this.

  27. If its jaws are closed on something that you want to remove.

  28. For example, a limb.

  29. Tap it or punch it on the snout.

  30. Now that's really helpful information.

  31. This book, as I said, is totally serious.

  32. It gives you instructions on how to deal with a bunch of worst case scenarios you find yourself in day by day.

  33. Or in most cases, I think none of us find ourselves in those situations.

  34. Such as page 54.

  35. How to escape from a mountain lion.

  36. Apparently, it suggests take your coat off and wave it up really big.

  37. And it makes you look bigger than it is.

  38. And it runs away like a pussycat.

  39. And it goes on and on.

  40. How about this one?

  41. How to leap from a motorbike into a car.

  42. But there's a key footnote.

  43. There's a key footnote to this one.

  44. And it says, remember that in many newer cars, only the front windows roll all the way down.

  45. Key bit of information there.

  46. If you're hoping to get all the way into the car.

  47. Okay.

  48. How about this one?

  49. How to manoeuvre on the top of a train.

  50. And again, a very, very helpful tip in the footnotes.

  51. If a tunnel is approaching, lie down flat quickly.

  52. Like, who hadn't thought of that?

  53. And apparently, it's how to manoeuvre on the top of a train in order to get inside the train.

  54. I find standing at the platform when the doors open the easiest way.

  55. Personally, I'd recommend that.

  56. Or how about this one?

  57. Page 114.

  58. How to land an aeroplane.

  59. And it begins with the rather disconcerting sentence.

  60. If the plane has only got one set of controls, it recommends you push, pull, drag, or carry the pilot out of the pilot seat first.

  61. And then take the controls of the aeroplane.

  62. Really helpful bits of information here.

  63. I can imagine this is great bedtime reading.

  64. This is a sort of wisdom that you want to pass on to your children.

  65. So I'm thinking that it would be great to read to my kids.

  66. And I could just...

  67. And so, you know, how to deliver a baby in a taxi.

  68. There's another one.

  69. How to perform a tracheoctomy.

  70. I could just imagine, you know, my girls, just tell me the tracheoctomy one again.

  71. You know, just in case I might need to know that.

  72. How to do it with a biro.

  73. You can do that with a biro, apparently.

  74. Anyway.

  75. It's all the stuff that you need to survive.

  76. And I've got to suggest that the book deals with situations that most of us will never, ever face.

  77. By contrast, the book of Proverbs, which we're launching into for the next 10 weeks,

  78. deals with things that we face every single day.

  79. It's a book that is full of wisdom for living.

  80. So if you're going to make it through life without making a total mess of it, we need wisdom.

  81. That's what Proverbs is saying.

  82. And every one of us, in fact, will make a mess of life if we don't find and we don't grow in wisdom.

  83. That is, if we don't...

  84. We can have love, but not wisdom.

  85. And if we do have love, but not wisdom, we will harm people with the very best of intentions.

  86. If we have courage, but not wisdom,

  87. we will blunder boldly.

  88. Such as jumping from a motorbike into the front window of a car.

  89. You know, it takes wisdom not to do that sort of thing.

  90. If you have technology, but not wisdom,

  91. you will use the very best of ever communications ever invented

  92. in order to broadcast stupidity.

  93. If you have biblical truth, but not wisdom,

  94. we will make the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus look ugly to people.

  95. If you have revival in the church, but not wisdom,

  96. you will use the power of God to put the church in reverse gear.

  97. Wisdom is essential.

  98. And so I would recommend the complete worst case scenario survival book for a laugh.

  99. And I would also recommend it if you're planning on camping beside the East Gallagher River

  100. sometime in the near future.

  101. But Proverbs deserves our endless attention.

  102. The great Billy Graham used to read a proverb a day every month.

  103. Every month he'd read through the whole book of Proverbs.

  104. And he did that for years and years and years

  105. because he wanted to grow in wisdom.

  106. So I think it deserves our endless attention.

  107. And yet for most case, for most Christians,

  108. what we tend to do with the book of Proverbs is we dive in

  109. and we grab one proverb here, a proverb there, a proverb there,

  110. our particular favourite proverbs.

  111. And we pin everything on those.

  112. We actually look at the whole book

  113. and investigate what the entirety of wisdom is saying.

  114. T.S. Eliot spoke to our times, I think,

  115. when he asked these three questions.

  116. He said, where is the life that we have lost in living?

  117. Where is the wisdom that we have lost in knowledge?

  118. And where is the knowledge that we have lost in information?

  119. Just sound bites of information.

  120. That's the way we operate at the moment.

  121. We get on our phones, we look at Wikipedia

  122. and just particles of information floating across us.

  123. And I think what we need is we need Proverbs to counsel us

  124. in how to live well.

  125. And that's what's at stake here.

  126. It's not just about surviving and it's not just about dying,

  127. but in fact about how do we live and how do we live well.

  128. That's what Proverbs is about.

  129. This book works well, I believe, when we slow down

  130. and we think and we listen and we journal and we pray.

  131. I think we need to do that.

  132. It's time to get off the information high,

  133. Googling stuff all the time,

  134. and just to pick up the Bible, go deep and grow in wisdom.

  135. That's what we're seeking to do in the next 10 weeks

  136. and hopefully beyond this.

  137. So let's first of all, Proverbs chapter 8 just read out to us.

    Proverbs 8 chapter mention

  138. In verses 10 to 11, it reveals for us the importance of wisdom.

  139. It says,

  140. Choose my instruction instead of silver,

  141. knowledge rather than choice gold,

  142. for wisdom is more precious than rubies

  143. and nothing you desire can compare with her.

  144. Notice the progression.

  145. Wisdom is speaking and wisdom says,

  146. I am more important than silver.

  147. Then it progresses and says,

  148. I'm more important than gold.

  149. And then it says, I am more important than rubies.

  150. And then finally, wisdom gets down to being greater than anything

  151. than you could ever possibly desire.

  152. That's a pretty high call.

  153. Wisdom is infinitely more important

  154. than all the wealth and the fame and the power in the world.

  155. Far more important than the greatest of circumstances in this world

  156. where you've got all the wealth and the power

  157. and the influence and the beauty and everything else.

  158. Far greater than having all the greatest circumstances in the world

  159. is in fact the ability to handle and to grow

  160. and to flourish whatever life circumstances are.

  161. And why is that important?

  162. Because only a tiny, tiny minority of people

  163. in fact get their life circumstances

  164. where they actually want them to be.

  165. And absolutely no one ever keeps them there.

  166. No one.

  167. Not a single person.

  168. Wisdom is infinitely more important.

  169. There are plenty of people in this world

  170. who have got talent and wealth and intellect

  171. and charisma and credentials and beauty

  172. and their lives have unraveled

  173. and there are people who have got very little

  174. of all of those things

  175. and in fact they have lived life very, very well

  176. and the difference is wisdom.

  177. Wisdom is not the same as moral goodness.

  178. It's related to it but it's not identical to it.

  179. It's obvious that to be unethical is stupid in the long run.

  180. Wisdom is not being less than ethical

  181. but it is far more than just being ethical.

  182. For example, it is good and right to help a person

  183. from a position of poverty, to help them out of their poverty.

  184. It's noble, it's good, it's right

  185. and you can do that completely, totally ethically

  186. and still completely screw up their life at the same time.

  187. That is, you can do it with a lack of wisdom.

  188. If you do not understand all the complexities

  189. that are associated as to why people might be in poverty

  190. you can screw it up.

  191. See, it's not even good enough to be people

  192. of high principles and morals.

  193. We need to be people of wisdom

  194. or we will ruin our lives and the lives of other people.

  195. We need wisdom so much.

  196. You know, to make a bunch of decisions in this world

  197. it is, all you basically need is knowledge.

  198. That is, with the right knowledge

  199. you can pick the right car.

  200. It's a Toyota Prado.

  201. You know, it's straightforward.

  202. With the right sort of knowledge

  203. you can, you know, get the right medication.

  204. You can build a bridge.

  205. You can fill out the form correctly.

  206. But what about the decisions that we face every day

  207. across all of our lives

  208. such as, who should I marry?

  209. Who should I date?

  210. Who, you know, should I, in fact, break up?

  211. What career should I go into?

  212. What school should I enroll into?

  213. Should I buy this house?

  214. Should I move to that house?

  215. Where do I live?

  216. What church do I go to?

  217. Should I change jobs?

  218. Should I confront the person right now

  219. or should I just hold back a little bit?

  220. Should I take that risk or just play it safe?

  221. That's the multitude of decisions

  222. that we make every day.

  223. And the rules don't apply.

  224. There's no rules that says

  225. that person is the person you should marry.

  226. And a wrong decision in some or any of those things

  227. can be a real disaster.

  228. And the moral rules don't cover them.

  229. They might give you a broad framework,

  230. but they don't cover the specifics.

  231. And knowledge and facts and principles aren't enough.

  232. I'd go as far as to saying

  233. that the reason why so many of us

  234. are so stuck and anxious and stressed

  235. is because we don't have the wisdom

  236. that we need to deal with the situations

  237. we're currently facing.

  238. It's not just a matter of knowledge.

  239. It's not a matter of IQ or moral principles.

  240. It's a matter of wisdom.

  241. And we are perishing for the lack of wisdom.

  242. It's more important than silver,

  243. more important than gold and jewels,

  244. more important than anything you could possibly imagine.

  245. So what is it?

  246. Verses 8 to 16, we have wisdom speaking again.

  247. And we get a few clues as to what wisdom is here.

  248. It says,

  249. I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence.

  250. I possess knowledge and discretion.

  251. To fear the Lord is to hate evil.

  252. I hate pride and arrogance,

  253. evil behaviour and perverse speech.

  254. Counsel and sound judgment are mine.

  255. I have insight, I have power.

  256. By me, kings reign and rulers,

  257. issues, decrees that are just.

  258. By me, princes, governors, nobles,

  259. all who rule on earth.

  260. So there are at least three things here

  261. that wisdom speaks about

  262. and gives us an idea of what wisdom is.

  263. Notice firstly that wisdom has insight in verse 14.

  264. The word insight there is translated from a Hebrew word

  265. which basically means to know how things really are.

  266. It's understanding of how things really are.

  267. Secondly, it also says that wisdom dwells with prudence.

  268. That's not an old-fashioned girl's name.

  269. In verse 12, so it's not,

  270. she's hanging out with prudence,

  271. wisdom's with prudence.

  272. It's actually not probably the best English translation.

  273. A better translation is the word shrewdness.

  274. Shrewdness, not prudence.

  275. Shrewdness here,

  276. we often regard it as a negative thing,

  277. but here shrewdness is positive.

  278. It's not scheming and plotting.

  279. It's a resourceful cunningness about life.

  280. Wisdom here is knowing how things not just are,

  281. but how life works,

  282. how things happen in life.

  283. And thirdly, verse 15, it says,

  284. by me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just.

  285. So wisdom is not just about how things are

  286. and how things actually work,

  287. but it's knowing what to do about it.

  288. It's very practical.

  289. So wisdom is very, very practical.

  290. It's not just theoretical.

  291. Think of the difference

  292. between the great English detective Sherlock Holmes

  293. and his sidekick, Dr. Watson.

  294. A client would walk into Holmes' apartment

  295. in 221B Baker Street,

  296. and he could...

  297. Holmes would take one look at the person

  298. and know 19 things about them,

  299. just like that.

  300. And he'd always say to Watson,

  301. it's elementary, elementary, my dear Watson, elementary.

  302. And Dr. Watson would see the same person

  303. but not have the same insight or the same shrewdness.

  304. The not obvious, the non-obvious,

  305. was obvious to Holmes,

  306. whereas it wasn't so much to Watson.

  307. Holmes sees clues.

  308. Watson sees a blur.

  309. Holmes sees distinctions.

  310. Just had more clarity.

  311. So what is wisdom?

  312. Gerhard von Rad,

  313. a 20th century German theologian,

  314. you have to be German to have a name like that,

  315. wrote a book called Wisdom in Israel,

  316. and it's a pretty hard, difficult book,

  317. so you just read the conclusion,

  318. that gives you the answer.

  319. And in it,

  320. he gives a definition of wisdom

  321. according to Proverbs.

  322. And it's a great definition.

  323. He says,

  324. wisdom is becoming competent

  325. with regard to the realities of life.

  326. I love the word becoming.

  327. It's saying there that wisdom

  328. is something that you grow in.

  329. It's becoming competent

  330. with regard to the realities of life.

  331. It's knowing how things really happen,

  332. how things really are,

  333. and knowing what to do about them.

  334. So it's intensely practical.

  335. It's not theoretical.

  336. Kind of ironic,

  337. me doing a sermon like this.

  338. It is the art of being successful

  339. across all of life.

  340. It's knowing how life works

  341. and living it well.

  342. And wisdom finds its seat,

  343. its centre,

  344. not in the mind,

  345. but in the centre of the being,

  346. what the Bible calls

  347. the heart of the individual,

  348. the soul of the individual,

  349. which incorporates the intellect

  350. and everything else,

  351. it's the centre of,

  352. the heart of the person

  353. is the centre of the person's

  354. moral and intellectual decision-making.

  355. But there's this huge problem

  356. in gaining wisdom.

  357. The problem is highlighted

  358. in verses 22 onwards.

  359. And here we have wisdom speaking.

  360. And wisdom says,

  361. I was there

  362. when this world was made.

  363. That's the bottom line.

  364. So let me have a read through here.

  365. It says,

  366. The Lord brought me forth

  367. as the first of his works

  368. before his deeds of old.

  369. I was formed long ago,

  370. ages ago,

  371. at the very beginning

  372. when the world came to be.

  373. When there were no watery depths,

  374. I was given birth.

  375. When there were no springs

  376. overflowing with water,

  377. before the mountains were settled

  378. in the place,

  379. before the hills,

  380. I was given birth.

  381. Before he made the world

  382. or its fields

  383. or any of the dust of the earth,

  384. I was there

  385. when he set the heavens in place,

  386. when he marked out the horizon

  387. on the face of the deep,

  388. when he established the clouds

  389. above and fixed securely

  390. the fountains of the deep,

  391. when he gave the sea its boundary

  392. so the waters

  393. would not overstep its command,

  394. when he marked out

  395. the foundations of the earth,

  396. then I was constantly at his side.

  397. I was filled with delight

  398. day by day,

  399. rejoicing always in his presence,

  400. rejoicing in his whole world

  401. and delighting in mankind.

  402. And so what we have here

  403. in Proverbs 8

  404. is wisdom being there

  405. as God creates

  406. the created order,

  407. brings everything into being.

  408. And the creation account here

  409. is a unique creation account.

  410. You see,

  411. most ancient societies

  412. either regarded the creation

  413. of the material world

  414. as an accident

  415. of the gods,

  416. it's like they lend against something

  417. and the universe is made,

  418. that was a bit of a mistake,

  419. didn't mean that to happen.

  420. Or it's a result

  421. of the gods having a battle

  422. and they create the world

  423. for some strange reason.

  424. And here it says

  425. the creation account

  426. is based on the wisdom of God.

  427. It was deliberate.

  428. There's a sense here

  429. of this overwhelming joy

  430. where God designed the world

  431. to be a place of beauty

  432. and power and order

  433. and joy and peace.

  434. God made the world

  435. with wisdom.

  436. And that's why

  437. the wise of Israel

  438. said that wisdom worked.

  439. Because it aligned,

  440. wisdom is just simply

  441. being aligned

  442. with the wisdom of God

  443. in creation.

  444. That's why it works.

  445. If God created the world

  446. according to wisdom,

  447. then there is a pattern

  448. to all that he's made.

  449. It's connected.

  450. That is,

  451. reality's not random.

  452. And if wisdom made the world,

  453. then wisdom can be perceived.

  454. And to a great degree,

  455. can be lived in accordance with.

  456. Now, it's obvious for most people

  457. that there are physical patterns

  458. patterns

  459. in the reality

  460. of our physical world.

  461. There are patterns there,

  462. such as

  463. the pattern

  464. of aerodynamics.

  465. If an object

  466. fits with the pattern

  467. and the rules

  468. of aerodynamics,

  469. it will fly.

  470. If it doesn't fit

  471. with the pattern

  472. of aerodynamics,

  473. it won't fly.

  474. Such as

  475. falling off a ladder.

  476. You won't fly.

  477. You will crash and burn.

  478. If you disregard

  479. the patterns

  480. of aerodynamics,

  481. you will crash and burn.

  482. And the wise of Israel

  483. also concluded

  484. that there is

  485. a relational fabric

  486. to reality

  487. that if you don't follow

  488. those patterns,

  489. you will relationally

  490. crash and burn.

  491. And they also

  492. concluded

  493. that there is

  494. a spiritual fabric

  495. to the created order

  496. that God has made.

  497. And if you don't follow

  498. those spiritual patterns,

  499. you spiritually

  500. will crash and burn too.

  501. That's the wisdom

  502. of Israel.

  503. That's what we see

  504. in Proverbs.

  505. And so what

  506. foolishness is,

  507. is going against

  508. the grain,

  509. going against

  510. the weave,

  511. going against

  512. the pattern,

  513. going against

  514. the structure

  515. that God

  516. has put in place

  517. in his created order

  518. that he made

  519. with wisdom.

  520. It's going against

  521. wisdom.

  522. That's what foolishness

  523. is.

  524. But,

  525. and here's the problem

  526. in gaining wisdom,

  527. there are two things

  528. that you must know

  529. about these patterns

  530. in order to be wise.

  531. And you must hold

  532. both of these things

  533. together equally.

  534. Equal weight.

  535. Firstly,

  536. you have to see

  537. and admit

  538. that there is

  539. a pattern.

  540. God has made

  541. the world

  542. and there is

  543. a pattern to it.

  544. There are principles

  545. in life

  546. which customarily

  547. work.

  548. Secondly,

  549. you've got to see

  550. and know

  551. that you cannot

  552. see

  553. the entire

  554. pattern.

  555. You can't see

  556. the entire

  557. pattern.

  558. much of the pattern

  559. is in fact

  560. hidden from us.

  561. And that's the problem

  562. of gaining wisdom.

  563. For instance,

  564. in chapters

  565. 10 to 15

  566. of Proverbs,

  567. you get

  568. Proverbs

  569. about the principles

  570. of how life

  571. normally works.

  572. And they say

  573. things like,

  574. if you work hard,

  575. you'll prosper.

  576. If you're lazy,

  577. you'll be poor.

  578. If you

  579. raise a child

  580. in the right way,

  581. they will love you

  582. when they get older.

  583. And if you read

  584. those chapters

  585. with a

  586. conservative,

  587. moralistic

  588. bent,

  589. and you believe

  590. that there is

  591. order,

  592. you believe

  593. there's a pattern

  594. in the created

  595. life,

  596. you will say

  597. things like,

  598. yeah,

  599. that's right,

  600. I knew there was

  601. a rule for everything.

  602. There's a rule

  603. for everything.

  604. And then you get

  605. to chapter 16.

  606. And you get

  607. to chapter 16

  608. and suddenly

  609. there are exceptions

  610. to the principles

  611. of how life

  612. normally works.

  613. For instance,

  614. some people

  615. who live

  616. according to

  617. God's moral

  618. absolutes

  619. have a fairly

  620. lousy life.

  621. Some people

  622. who work hard

  623. but stay poor

  624. because of oppression.

  625. And some people

  626. raise their child

  627. right but they

  628. go off the rails

  629. at some point

  630. in life.

  631. And so if you

  632. read that

  633. section

  634. with a

  635. liberal bent,

  636. that is you

  637. don't believe

  638. that there's

  639. an order

  640. that you

  641. need to

  642. abide by,

  643. you go,

  644. yeah,

  645. that's right,

  646. life's messy,

  647. always said it

  648. was messy,

  649. can't predict

  650. anything.

  651. And yet wisdom

  652. is holding

  653. the both

  654. together.

  655. It's a matter,

  656. it's admitting

  657. that there is

  658. a pattern

  659. that I must

  660. submit to

  661. and that I

  662. can't make up

  663. the rules

  664. for myself.

  665. I don't

  666. define reality

  667. for myself.

  668. But if I

  669. live like that

  670. then Proverbs

  671. says I'm a fool.

  672. But wisdom

  673. is also

  674. acknowledging

  675. that I can't

  676. see the whole

  677. pattern.

  678. There are

  679. hidden things.

  680. And if I

  681. think that I

  682. can see all

  683. the pattern

  684. and if I

  685. think I

  686. know how

  687. all of life

  688. works

  689. then I'm

  690. a fool

  691. according to

  692. Proverbs.

  693. So you

  694. can be a

  695. conservative

  696. fool or

  697. you can be

  698. a liberal

  699. fool.

  700. You can be

  701. a moralistic

  702. fool, you

  703. can be a

  704. relativistic

  705. fool.

  706. We are

  707. all one

  708. or the

  709. other depending

  710. on our

  711. ideology and

  712. our personality

  713. I suspect.

  714. So in a

  715. nutshell if

  716. you're a

  717. person who

  718. thinks that

  719. if you have

  720. a good

  721. life, live

  722. a good

  723. life, it

  724. will go

  725. well for

  726. you, then

  727. you are a

  728. conservative

  729. fool.

  730. But if

  731. you're the

  732. kind of

  733. person who

  734. says I

  735. can decide

  736. my own

  737. reality, I

  738. can decide

  739. what is

  740. right and

  741. wrong for

  742. me and I

  743. don't believe

  744. there's any

  745. divine order

  746. that I have

  747. to submit

  748. to, then

  749. you're a

  750. liberal

  751. fool.

  752. And we're

  753. all fools

  754. one way or

  755. another.

  756. Let's just

  757. close the

  758. sermon there.

  759. No, we'll

  760. keep going.

  761. We're all

  762. fools one way

  763. or another.

  764. And we as

  765. a society

  766. are split on

  767. this.

  768. We are pushing

  769. each other

  770. more and more

  771. into areas

  772. of foolishness.

  773. The same

  774. sex marriage

  775. debate is a

  776. classic example

  777. of this.

  778. Church goes

  779. all moralistic

  780. and over

  781. here the

  782. liberals go

  783. whatever.

  784. It's all

  785. relative,

  786. there's no

  787. order.

  788. And we're

  789. pushing ourselves

  790. more and more

  791. into foolishness.

  792. So what's

  793. the solution?

  794. There is a

  795. solution.

  796. Did you

  797. notice that as

  798. chapter 8 was

  799. read out to

  800. us that

  801. wisdom is

  802. personified?

  803. Wisdom is

  804. I, me,

  805. my.

  806. You see that

  807. right through

  808. chapter 8.

  809. Wisdom is not

  810. an abstract

  811. quality but in

  812. fact a

  813. person.

  814. That's how

  815. wisdom is

  816. perceived in

  817. Proverbs.

  818. And as

  819. hopefully we've

  820. seen in the

  821. introductory video

  822. which we saw

  823. last week and

  824. hopefully you've

  825. seen it throughout

  826. the course of

  827. this week,

  828. wisdom in that

  829. little video as

  830. it is in

  831. Proverbs is

  832. depicted as a

  833. woman.

  834. A woman in

  835. fact who

  836. calls, lady

  837. wisdom who

  838. calls, calls,

  839. calls.

  840. And interestingly

  841. enough that the

  842. Proverbs were

  843. originally a

  844. manual, a

  845. wisdom manual for

  846. the young men

  847. of Israel

  848. which is why

  849. most of the

  850. Proverbs are

  851. addressed to

  852. my son.

  853. They were

  854. four.

  855. They were a

  856. wisdom manual for

  857. the old men of

  858. Israel training the

  859. younger men in

  860. Israel and so

  861. you want to get

  862. their attention?

  863. Make wisdom a

  864. woman.

  865. You know, who's

  866. calling you?

  867. Of course their

  868. attention is there

  869. all the way

  870. through.

  871. So wisdom

  872. here is not so

  873. much a matter of

  874. mastering a bunch

  875. of rules and

  876. principles.

  877. wisdom is in

  878. fact a love

  879. affair in

  880. Proverbs.

  881. It's a love

  882. affair.

  883. We need to

  884. long for

  885. wisdom.

  886. We need to

  887. love wisdom.

  888. We need to

  889. pursue wisdom.

  890. But what if

  891. wisdom in

  892. fact was a

  893. person?

  894. What if you

  895. got into a

  896. relationship with

  897. this person and

  898. they made you

  899. wise?

  900. They helped

  901. you to see a

  902. pattern to the

  903. world and they

  904. helped you to

  905. see your

  906. limitations that

  907. you don't know

  908. the entire

  909. pattern of the

  910. world and so

  911. they called you

  912. to trust them

  913. because they knew

  914. the entire

  915. pattern of the

  916. world.

  917. What if this

  918. person made you

  919. competent with

  920. regard to the

  921. realities of

  922. life?

  923. Helped you to

  924. know how

  925. things actually

  926. are, how

  927. things actually

  928. work and what

  929. to do about it?

  930. This at least

  931. means that those

  932. of us who have

  933. never had wise

  934. parents, never

  935. had wise

  936. counsellors, never

  937. had wise guides,

  938. never had the

  939. wise mentors,

  940. would have

  941. someone who

  942. could make us

  943. wise even if

  944. we were into

  945. our 80s and

  946. 90s.

  947. It's not too

  948. late.

  949. The wisdom

  950. train had

  951. left and you

  952. weren't on it

  953. but it's not

  954. too late.

  955. What if there

  956. was still a

  957. chance to get

  958. on the wisdom

  959. train because

  960. wisdom was a

  961. person who you

  962. could have a

  963. relationship with,

  964. someone like a

  965. wonderful counsellor?

  966. What's

  967. interesting is

  968. there's a lot

  969. of other

  970. wisdom literature

  971. in ancient

  972. Israel apart

  973. from what we

  974. have here in

  975. Proverbs and

  976. in the rest of

  977. the Bible.

  978. Another piece

  979. of wisdom

  980. literature in

  981. ancient Israel

  982. is called the

  983. wisdom of the

  984. son of Syriac

  985. and in it

  986. there's this

  987. interesting call

  988. and challenge.

  989. The son of

  990. Syriac says

  991. this,

  992. turn unto me

  993. you who are

  994. untaught,

  995. why do you

  996. say you are

  997. lacking in

  998. these things?

  999. Why are

  1000. your souls so

  1001. thirsty?

  1002. I say to

  1003. you find

  1004. wisdom,

  1005. put your

  1006. necks under

  1007. its yoke and

  1008. bear its

  1009. burden.

  1010. If you are

  1011. intent you

  1012. can find

  1013. wisdom,

  1014. see with

  1015. your eyes

  1016. that I

  1017. have laboured

  1018. for it and

  1019. I have found

  1020. for my soul

  1021. much rest.

  1022. Now that

  1023. is a typical

  1024. invitation to

  1025. pursue wisdom

  1026. in ancient

  1027. Israel but

  1028. can you imagine

  1029. the listener

  1030. who,

  1031. how they

  1032. would have

  1033. responded a

  1034. couple of

  1035. centuries later

  1036. when a

  1037. rabbi and

  1038. a teacher and

  1039. a wise man

  1040. got up and

  1041. said these

  1042. words,

  1043. come to me,

  1044. come to me,

  1045. come to me,

  1046. come to me,

  1047. all who are

  1048. weary and

  1049. burdened and

  1050. I will give

  1051. you rest.

  1052. Take my yoke

  1053. upon you and

  1054. learn from me

  1055. for I am

  1056. gentle and

  1057. humble in

  1058. heart and

  1059. you will find

  1060. rest for your

  1061. souls.

  1062. for my

  1063. yoke is

  1064. easy and

  1065. my burden

  1066. is light.

  1067. Similar

  1068. statements.

  1069. In fact,

  1070. most biblical

  1071. scholars think

  1072. Jesus was

  1073. actually quoting

  1074. the son of

  1075. Syriac.

  1076. The son of

  1077. Syriac says

  1078. put your head

  1079. into the yoke

  1080. of discipline

  1081. and training

  1082. and you

  1083. work hard,

  1084. you work hard,

  1085. you work hard,

  1086. you work hard

  1087. and you pursue

  1088. wisdom and

  1089. you will get

  1090. rest for your

  1091. souls.

  1092. And Jesus

  1093. says come to

  1094. me,

  1095. come to me,

  1096. take my

  1097. yoke upon

  1098. you,

  1099. learn of

  1100. me and

  1101. I will

  1102. give you

  1103. rest for

  1104. your souls.

  1105. You see,

  1106. what Jesus

  1107. is saying

  1108. there in

  1109. that moment

  1110. and Israel

  1111. would have

  1112. realised this

  1113. in that

  1114. moment is

  1115. that Jesus

  1116. is saying

  1117. I am

  1118. wisdom.

  1119. I am

  1120. wisdom

  1121. personified.

  1122. Wisdom

  1123. is not a

  1124. body of

  1125. knowledge that

  1126. needs to be

  1127. mastered,

  1128. it's not a

  1129. body of

  1130. principles to

  1131. be memorised,

  1132. it is

  1133. knowing Jesus,

  1134. coming to

  1135. Jesus.

  1136. That's where

  1137. wisdom begins.

  1138. And that's

  1139. what John

    John 1 chapter mention

  1140. chapter 1

  1141. affirms too.

  1142. There are

  1143. so many

  1144. parallels between

  1145. Proverbs

    Proverbs 8 chapter mention

  1146. chapter 8

  1147. and John

    John 1 chapter mention

  1148. chapter 1

  1149. and this is

  1150. how John

    John 1 chapter mention

  1151. chapter 1

  1152. starts,

  1153. it says

  1154. in the

  1155. beginning

  1156. was the

  1157. word.

  1158. Now the

  1159. word there

  1160. is translated

  1161. from the

  1162. Greek word

  1163. logos which

  1164. has massive

  1165. connotations for

  1166. wisdom attached

  1167. to it.

  1168. So without

  1169. too much

  1170. paraphrasing,

  1171. you could

  1172. read it like

  1173. this,

  1174. in the

  1175. beginning was

  1176. the wisdom

  1177. and the

  1178. wisdom was

  1179. with God

  1180. and the

  1181. wisdom was

  1182. God,

  1183. he was

  1184. with God

  1185. in the

  1186. beginning

  1187. and through

  1188. him,

  1189. that is

  1190. through the

  1191. wisdom,

  1192. all things

  1193. were made.

  1194. Without

  1195. him nothing

  1196. was made

  1197. that has

  1198. been made,

  1199. in him

  1200. was life

  1201. and the

  1202. life was

  1203. the light

  1204. of all

  1205. mankind.

  1206. Then down

  1207. into verse

  1208. 14,

  1209. the wisdom

  1210. became flesh

  1211. and made

  1212. his dwelling

  1213. among us

  1214. and we have

  1215. seen his

  1216. glory,

  1217. the glory

  1218. of the

  1219. one and

  1220. only Son

  1221. who came

  1222. from the

  1223. Father full

  1224. of grace

  1225. and truth.

  1226. John is

  1227. telling us

  1228. here what

  1229. the secret

  1230. of wisdom

  1231. is.

  1232. John reveals

  1233. that Jesus

  1234. is the

  1235. wisdom of

  1236. God to

  1237. us.

  1238. He is the

  1239. wisdom of

  1240. God on

  1241. display.

  1242. So those

  1243. of us who

  1244. are potentially

  1245. even gathered

  1246. here now

  1247. waiting for

  1248. an airtight

  1249. argument about

  1250. God before

  1251. they would

  1252. believe in

  1253. God,

  1254. I think you

  1255. need to be

  1256. encouraged just

  1257. to think again

  1258. a little bit.

  1259. When Jesus

  1260. says I am the

  1261. wisdom of

  1262. God to

  1263. you, he

  1264. is saying

  1265. that he is

  1266. the ultimate

  1267. argument for

  1268. the existence

  1269. of God.

  1270. What if God

  1271. did not send

  1272. an airtight

  1273. argument but

  1274. he sent an

  1275. airtight

  1276. person?

  1277. What this

  1278. means is

  1279. that it

  1280. doesn't matter

  1281. who you

  1282. are or

  1283. where you

  1284. are in

  1285. your faith

  1286. journey or

  1287. how much

  1288. you or

  1289. how little

  1290. you believe

  1291. or whether

  1292. you believe

  1293. nothing at

  1294. all,

  1295. sit down

  1296. with a

  1297. group of

  1298. people and

  1299. go through

  1300. the life

  1301. of Jesus.

  1302. Read about

  1303. him, work

  1304. through his

  1305. life, his

  1306. teaching, his

  1307. accomplishments and

  1308. his promises and

  1309. you will be

  1310. shocked because

  1311. it will be the

  1312. first time in

  1313. your life that

  1314. you've ever met

  1315. someone who's

  1316. perfect.

  1317. No one, no

  1318. wise person ever

  1319. makes a guy like

  1320. Jesus up.

  1321. He is the

  1322. ultimate argument

  1323. for the

  1324. existence of

  1325. God in the

  1326. form of a

  1327. person.

  1328. He is

  1329. wisdom

  1330. personified but

  1331. he is also

  1332. the wisdom

  1333. of God

  1334. for us.

  1335. Jesus is like

  1336. in many ways

  1337. like a whole

  1338. heap of

  1339. wise guys that

  1340. came before

  1341. him and after

  1342. him and they

  1343. all say he is

  1344. the wise way

  1345. to live.

  1346. Jesus did

  1347. that like a

  1348. bunch of

  1349. other guys

  1350. did but no

  1351. other wise

  1352. person in the

  1353. history of the

  1354. world apart

  1355. from Jesus ever

  1356. said but I've

  1357. come to live

  1358. that wise life

  1359. for you.

  1360. No one's ever

  1361. done that.

  1362. Otherwise people

  1363. say this is how

  1364. you should live

  1365. do it and you

  1366. will live well

  1367. and you will

  1368. flourish.

  1369. Jesus is the

  1370. only one who

  1371. says this is how

  1372. you should live

  1373. but I've lived

  1374. it the way you

  1375. should have lived

  1376. and not only

  1377. lived the life

  1378. you should have

  1379. lived I've

  1380. actually died the

  1381. death you should

  1382. have died because

  1383. of your failure

  1384. to live the

  1385. way you should

  1386. have lived

  1387. because of

  1388. your foolishness

  1389. and that's

  1390. why Jesus

  1391. says here my

  1392. yoke is the

  1393. only yoke which

  1394. is light my

  1395. burden is the

  1396. only easy

  1397. one and

  1398. what's more

  1399. Jesus is the

  1400. wisdom of God

  1401. with us in a

  1402. very confusing

  1403. world where the

  1404. patterns don't

  1405. always make

  1406. sense.

  1407. and they

  1408. don't always

  1409. make sense.

  1410. They're the

  1411. source of great

  1412. anxiety for us

  1413. in life when

  1414. the patterns

  1415. don't work the

  1416. way that we

  1417. think they're

  1418. going to work

  1419. and we think

  1420. in those moments

  1421. that God's

  1422. abandoned us

  1423. he's got no

  1424. idea what he's

  1425. doing but

  1426. Jesus is wisdom

  1427. of God with

  1428. us because the

  1429. tragedy and the

  1430. injustice of Jesus

  1431. dying on the

  1432. cross followed

  1433. by the triumph

  1434. and the

  1435. victory of

  1436. the resurrection

  1437. is the

  1438. clarity and

  1439. it's the

  1440. ultimate example

  1441. and the most

  1442. brilliant clarity

  1443. of how even

  1444. though we can't

  1445. see that there's

  1446. wisdom at play

  1447. wisdom is in

  1448. fact at work

  1449. in and through

  1450. the same event

  1451. that's the

  1452. wisdom of God

  1453. the death and

  1454. resurrection of

  1455. Jesus the

  1456. wisdom of God

  1457. on full display

  1458. knowing that

  1459. even though it

  1460. doesn't look

  1461. right God's

  1462. at work and

  1463. the patterns are

  1464. in play and

  1465. this is the

  1466. wisdom of God

  1467. and Jesus calls

  1468. us to it and

  1469. so as we begin

  1470. these ten weeks

  1471. in Proverbs

  1472. hear the call of

  1473. Jesus on your

  1474. life come to

  1475. me come to

  1476. me come to

  1477. me all who are

  1478. weary and

  1479. burdened and I

  1480. will give you

  1481. rest take my

  1482. yoke upon upon

  1483. you and you

  1484. learn from me

  1485. for I am gentle

  1486. and I am humble

  1487. in heart and

  1488. you will find

  1489. rest for your

  1490. souls for my

  1491. yoke is easy

  1492. and my burden

  1493. is light

  1494. numbers

  1495. for you and I

  1496. and I have
