  1. For the first time in about seven and a half years,

  2. I've produced for you this morning a sermon outline

  3. with some texts in there.

  4. That's either because I'm more organised

  5. than I've been in for seven and a half years

  6. or I'm more confused than I've been for seven and a half years.

  7. And as I go through this,

  8. I don't want you to be as confused as I am.

  9. So hopefully that you can follow along.

  10. Proverbs, as I've said to a number of people

  11. throughout the course of the last couple of weeks,

  12. Proverbs has been doing my head in.

  13. And it's been a lot of work to get to this point.

  14. So there's a sermon in each one of these,

  15. at least in each one of these points I want to make today.

  16. So let's pray that we might get the message

  17. of God's word to us right now.

  18. Father, I pray that you would speak to us

  19. with clarity through your word.

  20. There's a bunch of ideas.

  21. I pray, Lord, as people pursuing wisdom,

  22. that we would not just stop here,

  23. but in fact that we would pursue you

  24. and continue to pursue you regardless of what happens.

  25. In the next little half an hour or so.

  26. Lord, Father, we pray that you would speak to us

  27. with clarity, implant your word deep in our hearts

  28. and particularly your love might be bound around our necks,

  29. that it might be settled in our hearts,

  30. that we might be confident in who we are in you.

  31. Amen.

  32. Alistair McIntyre in his book, After Virtue,

  33. gives an illustration which has become quite famous.

  34. Imagine you're standing at a bus stop

  35. and a young man comes, walks up to you and says to you,

  36. hey, the Latin name for the common wild duck

  37. is Historonicus, Historonicus, Historonicus.

  38. How do you make sense of that?

  39. Why did that just happen?

  40. What does it mean?

  41. There's only one way to make sense of that statement

  42. and that is to put it into a story.

  43. You have to ask,

  44. what is the story in which that incident,

  45. that statement makes sense?

  46. Because without the story, it makes no sense.

  47. And so McIntyre says that there's a few options.

  48. For instance, it could be a sad story

  49. that the man is in fact mentally ill

  50. and that would make sense

  51. of that little interaction you've just had.

  52. Another possibility is that it's a case of mistaken identity.

  53. Maybe a few days earlier,

  54. the man was in a library doing some research

  55. on the Latin name of the common wild duck.

  56. He spoke to the librarian about that project he was doing

  57. to get some help

  58. and maybe you look like the librarian

  59. and so that would explain

  60. it was a case of mistaken identity at a bus stop.

  61. A further possibility,

  62. that is that he is in fact a spy

  63. and he's mistaken you for his contact

  64. and he's inadvertently passed on to you

  65. the contact code.

  66. You see, the statement makes no sense

  67. unless you stick it into a story

  68. and the story that you put it in

  69. completely determines how you will respond to it.

  70. Your response might be one of pity

  71. or it might be one of confusion

  72. or it might be one of anxiety

  73. of looking over your shoulder.

  74. How we live is determined

  75. by what we think the story of the world is.

  76. How we live is determined

  77. by what we think the story of the world is.

  78. And the story of the society in which we live,

  79. the secular society,

  80. is that we are here by accident

  81. and that when we die, we rot.

  82. That's the story of our society.

  83. There is no order or pattern.

  84. Everything is by chance.

  85. There's no absolute truth.

  86. There's no moral standards.

  87. This life is all there is

  88. and therefore,

  89. this is the only happiness

  90. that you will ever get.

  91. And that story determines how you live.

  92. Wisdom equals beshainment.

  93. The attitude of happiness here and now.

  94. Sexual ethics,

  95. the way you think about your money,

  96. how you raise your children,

  97. what the purpose of your work is,

  98. your relationships,

  99. everything,

  100. everything in life

  101. fits in that story.

  102. Everything.

  103. There's nothing that it does not touch.

  104. Now, the Christian person

  105. sees the story of the world quite differently.

  106. Christianity says

  107. that we are all created by God

  108. and so that absolutely everything

  109. that we have is a gift from him,

  110. including the money

  111. that we just handed on just then.

  112. Christianity says

  113. that the problems of this world

  114. are all linked

  115. to our rejection of God.

  116. But this same God

  117. who's been rejected

  118. came into his world

  119. to redeem it,

  120. not just to redeem the world,

  121. but that one day

  122. he's going to renew the world,

  123. his broken world.

  124. And Christianity said

  125. that this life

  126. is not the only life.

  127. It claims that this life

  128. is in fact

  129. a relatively small part

  130. of our entire existence

  131. and the greatest amount

  132. of joy and happiness

  133. is yet to come.

  134. And so that story

  135. shapes everything in your life.

  136. There's not an area

  137. of your existence

  138. that it does not touch.

  139. And Proverbs shows us

  140. how everything

  141. is touched and shaped

  142. and impacted

  143. by that story of existence

  144. with the God of the Bible

  145. behind it

  146. and in it

  147. and through it.

  148. And so this series

  149. is about wisdom.

  150. It's about what wisdom is

  151. and how to get it

  152. and how to grow in wisdom

  153. and it's about

  154. how to allow,

  155. align our lives

  156. with that story,

  157. with ultimate reality,

  158. and Proverbs 9 verse 10

    Proverbs 9:10

  159. says the fear

  160. of the Lord

  161. is the beginning

  162. of wisdom.

  163. That's the Christian story.

  164. It starts with God.

  165. That's where wisdom starts.

  166. Now last week

  167. I went with

  168. the following definition.

  169. I said that wisdom

  170. is becoming competent

  171. with regard

  172. to the realities of life.

  173. I ripped it off

  174. Gerhard von Rad.

  175. Wisdom

  176. is becoming competent

  177. in regard

  178. to the realities of life

  179. and I mentioned

  180. two key areas

  181. that were essential

  182. for the wise life.

  183. Firstly,

  184. you have to see

  185. and admit

  186. that there is a pattern

  187. in this world,

  188. that God has made the world

  189. and there is a pattern.

  190. There are principles

  191. by which life

  192. customarily works.

  193. Secondly,

  194. you've got to see

  195. that you cannot know

  196. the whole pattern.

  197. Much of the pattern

  198. is hidden from us

  199. and so

  200. that's the beginning.

  201. But the beginning

  202. as we just read out

  203. in those passages

  204. in Proverbs 1.7

  205. it says

  206. the fear of the Lord

  207. is the beginning

  208. of knowledge.

  209. That's the Christian framework.

  210. That's the Christian story.

  211. And chapter 9 verse 10

  212. says

  213. the fear of the Lord

  214. is the beginning

  215. of wisdom.

  216. Now they are

  217. very similar statements

  218. but they are

  219. different statements.

  220. Proverbs 1.7

  221. reveals

  222. that the fear

  223. of the Lord

  224. is more comprehensive

  225. than we actually think.

  226. Fear of the Lord

  227. is not just about

  228. how to do moral things.

  229. Relationship with God,

  230. faith in God

  231. completely determines

  232. what you know

  233. about the world

  234. and how you know

  235. the world.

  236. That's a pretty astounding

  237. and controversial statement.

  238. In our modern society

  239. it just does not

  240. think like that.

  241. Our society thinks

  242. it's possible

  243. for people

  244. to have different

  245. faiths,

  246. different personal

  247. individual ideas

  248. about God

  249. but they're to be

  250. kept private

  251. and separate.

  252. That's a matter

  253. of faith.

  254. That's a thing

  255. over there.

  256. The general consensus

  257. is that faith,

  258. that stuff about God,

  259. is opposed

  260. to reason

  261. and that reason

  262. and knowledge

  263. can only operate

  264. in its full capacity

  265. if it's separated

  266. from faith,

  267. if it's separated

  268. from God

  269. and knowledge of God.

  270. We're a secular society

  271. and so in the past

  272. couple of weeks

  273. media personality

  274. Andrew Denton

  275. called on those

  276. opposed to euthanasia

  277. on religious grounds

  278. to step aside

  279. from the debate.

  280. Get out of the way.

  281. He's of the view

  282. that if you take

  283. faith out of the equation

  284. we can then have

  285. a sensible,

  286. reasonable,

  287. logical,

  288. knowledgeable discussion

  289. about the issue.

  290. He said this

  291. to the National Press

  292. Club

  293. on the 10th of August,

  294. to those

  295. whose beliefs

  296. instruct you

  297. that only God

  298. can decide

  299. how a human being

  300. should die,

  301. I urge you

  302. step aside.

  303. May your beliefs

  304. sustain you

  305. and those you love

  306. but do not impose

  307. them on the rest of us.

  308. See the thinking?

  309. Faith

  310. and reason,

  311. God

  312. and knowledge,

  313. they don't belong

  314. at the same table

  315. and Proverbs

  316. opens

  317. with a statement

  318. that's exact opposite.

  319. The fear of God

  320. is the beginning

  321. of knowledge.

  322. It's the beginning

  323. of how we know anything.

  324. The fear of God.

  325. Faith is the foundation

  326. from which all

  327. of our reasoning

  328. comes.

  329. Our faith

  330. is the beginning

  331. of our knowledge.

  332. Now Denton's view

  333. is a fairly common view

  334. and it goes like this.

  335. The only things

  336. that we can be

  337. really sure of

  338. are the things

  339. that we can,

  340. that can be

  341. scientifically proven.

  342. The facts.

  343. You might have

  344. your belief

  345. about morality

  346. and about God

  347. and that's fine.

  348. That's for faith stuff.

  349. Keep it over there.

  350. The only things

  351. that we're really sure about

  352. are the things

  353. which are scientifically proven.

  354. But

  355. that statement

  356. can't be scientifically proven.

  357. Therefore,

  358. on its own terms,

  359. you can't be sure of it.

  360. If you don't believe

  361. that anything

  362. that happens

  363. in this world

  364. has a supernatural cause,

  365. that's fine.

  366. But understand this.

  367. In and of itself,

  368. that is a belief.

  369. It's not a statement of fact.

  370. It is a belief.

  371. Once you've adopted

  372. that particular worldview,

  373. that particular view of reality,

  374. by faith,

  375. all of your reasoning

  376. flows out from it.

  377. to be a convinced atheist

  378. is a position

  379. of faith.

  380. And therefore,

  381. all of your reasoning

  382. flows out from that,

  383. of how you view the world.

  384. Everything in life

  385. or every one of us,

  386. every single person,

  387. Andrew Denton,

  388. you, me, whoever,

  389. we all make

  390. faith leaps.

  391. All of us.

  392. And so the struggles

  393. in our society

  394. at the moment

  395. appear to be

  396. religion

  397. against no religion.

  398. When in actual fact,

  399. the real struggles

  400. in our society

  401. is religion

  402. against religion.

  403. It's faith

  404. against faith.

  405. That's the real struggle

  406. in our society.

  407. Including

  408. the religion

  409. of secularism.

  410. A religion

  411. is simply

  412. a system of beliefs

  413. that explains

  414. where life comes from,

  415. what life means

  416. and how we as human beings

  417. are meant to live.

  418. And so,

  419. Andrew Denton

  420. stood in front

  421. of the National Press Club

  422. and

  423. proclaimed

  424. his religion

  425. is what he did.

  426. Everyone has

  427. a faith view

  428. of reality

  429. because it is

  430. the only way

  431. to get a view

  432. of reality

  433. once you have

  434. taken on

  435. that faith view

  436. all of your

  437. reasoning

  438. of how you

  439. understand the world

  440. flows from it.

  441. And everybody

  442. has to base

  443. their entire life

  444. and all of

  445. their reasoning

  446. on some view

  447. about God

  448. that they have

  449. taken on by faith.

  450. Whether you're

  451. the committed

  452. Christian

  453. or you're

  454. the atheist.

  455. Even to say,

  456. well,

  457. no one really

  458. knows in the end.

  459. How do you know

  460. that statement's true?

  461. It's more true

  462. to say,

  463. well,

  464. I hope

  465. no one really

  466. knows in the end.

  467. We need faith

  468. to reject God

  469. and we need faith

  470. to embrace God.

  471. And the Christian

  472. story that we're

  473. beginning in with

  474. the book of

  475. Proverbs

  476. is that the

  477. beginning of

  478. our knowledge,

  479. the way things

  480. actually are

  481. and the way

  482. things actually

  483. work

  484. and what we're

  485. meant to do

  486. about it

  487. is God,

  488. the God of

  489. the Bible.

  490. He is the

  491. God of the

  492. Bible who is

  493. ultimate reality

  494. in and of

  495. himself.

  496. God is the

  497. beginning of

  498. knowledge and

  499. wisdom.

  500. He is the

  501. foundation of

  502. knowing how

  503. things actually

  504. are, how

  505. things actually

  506. work and what

  507. we are to do

  508. about it.

  509. That is how we

  510. are to align

  511. our lives,

  512. live our lives

  513. according to

  514. reality.

  515. And what this

  516. means for you,

  517. that if you are

  518. a Christian,

  519. is that your

  520. relationship with

  521. God, therefore,

  522. is absolutely

  523. central to your

  524. life.

  525. life.

  526. It's not just

  527. something that

  528. you do on

  529. Sundays.

  530. It is

  531. absolutely

  532. central.

  533. It means that

  534. God is not

  535. an add-on to

  536. your life.

  537. God is not

  538. something else

  539. that you have

  540. in your

  541. backpack to

  542. help you live

  543. a better

  544. kind of life.

  545. Your

  546. relationship

  547. with God

  548. is the

  549. most central

  550. thing in

  551. your life.

  552. Jesus

  553. influences and

  554. flavours and

  555. shapes and

  556. determines

  557. everything you

  558. think and

  559. do in this

  560. world.

  561. Everything.

  562. That's the

  563. book of

  564. Proverbs.

  565. Notice,

  566. though, that

  567. it's not just

  568. that God is

  569. the beginning

  570. point or

  571. the foundation

  572. of knowledge

  573. and wisdom,

  574. but the fear

  575. of the Lord

  576. is the

  577. foundation.

  578. It's a

  579. theme, this

  580. idea of

  581. theme of the

  582. Lord is a

  583. theme that

  584. runs through

  585. the whole

  586. Bible, not

  587. just in

  588. Proverbs.

  589. There are

  590. over 120

  591. occasions in

  592. the Old

  593. Testament and

  594. New

  595. Testament where

  596. this statement

  597. occurs.

  598. It is, if you

  599. like, the sum

  600. of everything

  601. that we're

  602. meant to be

  603. and do.

  604. There is a

  605. place in

  606. Job where

  607. God shows

  608. how important

  609. the term

  610. is when

  611. he says,

  612. have you

  613. considered my

  614. servant Job,

  615. there is

  616. none like

  617. him in

  618. all the

  619. earth, a

  620. man who

  621. fears God

  622. and shuns

  623. evil.

  624. But the

  625. concept of

  626. fear of God

  627. raises negative

  628. connotations for

  629. it's a sense

  630. of dread,

  631. you know,

  632. be scared,

  633. be very,

  634. very, very

  635. scared of

  636. the Lord.

  637. And this

  638. is not what

  639. the sense

  640. is when

  641. it's used

  642. here or

  643. in fact in

  644. other parts

  645. of the

  646. Bible.

  647. It's a

  648. little bit

  649. of it but

  650. it's not

  651. the entire

  652. sense.

  653. Deuteronomy

  654. 10.12

  655. says,

  656. and now

  657. Israel,

  658. what does

  659. the Lord

  660. your God

  661. ask of

  662. you but

  663. to fear

  664. the Lord

  665. your God,

  666. to walk

  667. in obedience

  668. to him,

  669. to love

  670. him,

  671. to serve

  672. him,

  673. serve

  674. the Lord

  675. your God

  676. with all

  677. your heart,

  678. with all

  679. your soul,

  680. and to

  681. observe

  682. the Lord's

  683. commands

  684. and decrees

  685. that I'm

  686. giving you

  687. today for

  688. your own

  689. good.

  690. Notice it

  691. doesn't say

  692. you either

  693. fear God

  694. or love

  695. God.

  696. They're not

  697. put up

  698. against one

  699. another.

  700. The more

  701. in fact

  702. you fear,

  703. the more

  704. you love

  705. him and

  706. the more

  707. you love

  708. him,

  709. the more

  710. you will

  711. fear him.

  712. They are

  713. actually

  714. connected and

  715. they roll

  716. together.

  717. Sinclair

  718. Ferguson

  719. in his

  720. book Grow

  721. in Grace

  722. describes

  723. the fear

  724. of God

  725. as the

  726. indefinable

  727. mixture of

  728. reverence,

  729. fear,

  730. pleasure,

  731. joy,

  732. and awe

  733. which fills

  734. our hearts

  735. when we

  736. realise who

  737. God is

  738. and what

  739. he has

  740. done for

  741. us.

  742. Fear of

  743. God does

  744. include some

  745. sense of

  746. dread.

  747. There is a

  748. very real

  749. sense that we

  750. should dread

  751. God's

  752. judgement.

  753. You see,

  754. after Adam

  755. sinned,

  756. he was

  757. afraid in

  758. Genesis 3.10.

  759. It's a

  760. right response.

  761. It's an

  762. appropriate

  763. response.

  764. It would

  765. be a

  766. presumption

  767. for him

  768. not to

  769. be afraid.

  770. When Paul

  771. describes the

  772. abject

  773. depravity of

  774. humanity

  775. which they've

  776. fallen into,

  777. he says in

  778. Romans 3.18,

  779. there is no

  780. fear of

  781. God before

  782. their eyes.

  783. That is,

  784. people are

  785. neither in

  786. awe of God

  787. nor afraid of

  788. his judgement.

  789. And so,

  790. fear,

  791. dread is an

  792. appropriate

  793. response.

  794. But it

  795. doesn't explain

  796. the entire

  797. picture of

  798. the Bible

  799. when it

  800. talks about

  801. the fear

  802. of the

  803. Lord.

  804. The Bible

  805. tells us

  806. that in

  807. his grace

  808. and his

  809. mercy,

  810. God

  811. allows

  812. himself to

  813. be our

  814. place of

  815. refuge.

  816. So,

  817. get this

  818. from Proverbs

    Proverbs 14:26

  819. 14,

  820. verse 26.

  821. Whoever

  822. fears the

  823. Lord,

  824. has a

  825. secure

  826. fortress.

  827. And for

  828. their

  829. children,

  830. it will

  831. be a

  832. refuge.

  833. The God

  834. we fear

  835. is our

  836. refuge and

  837. our

  838. fortress.

  839. Ferguson

  840. makes a

  841. distinction,

  842. I think,

  843. quite helpfully,

  844. between servile

  845. fear and

  846. filial fear.

  847. The word

  848. servile comes

  849. from the

  850. Latin word

  851. service,

  852. which means

  853. slave,

  854. and filial

  855. is from

  856. filius,

  857. which means

  858. son.

  859. And so

  860. servile fear

  861. is the

  862. sort of

  863. fear

  864. a slave

  865. would have

  866. towards a

  867. harsh and

  868. unyielding

  869. master.

  870. And Christians

  871. fall into

  872. servile fear,

  873. in fact,

  874. too often,

  875. if we don't

  876. understand the

  877. grace of God

  878. and his

  879. acceptance of

  880. us in the

  881. Lord Jesus.

  882. If we

  883. believe that

  884. we're in a

  885. performance

  886. relationship

  887. with God,

  888. then he

  889. will always

  890. appear to be

  891. a hard

  892. taskmaster

  893. who we

  894. can never

  895. please.

  896. He will

  897. be the

  898. divine ogre

  899. ready to

  900. judge us

  901. for our

  902. failure to

  903. live up to

  904. his standards.

  905. That is,

  906. if your

  907. relationship

  908. with God

  909. is a

  910. slavish

  911. fear,

  912. then any

  913. obedience

  914. is somewhat

  915. reluctant.

  916. I'm always

  917. looking for

  918. the bare

  919. minimum.

  920. When it

  921. comes to

  922. radical

  923. generosity,

  924. you know,

  925. what's the

  926. limit on

  927. radical?

  928. always

  929. looking for

  930. the bare

  931. minimum,

  932. rather than

  933. desiring to

  934. please a

  935. loving

  936. father.

  937. See,

  938. filial fear,

  939. on the

  940. other hand,

  941. is the

  942. loving fear

  943. of a

  944. child towards

  945. his father.

  946. And what

  947. is central,

  948. I think,

  949. to this idea

  950. of fear is

  951. the sense of

  952. reverential

  953. awe, just

  954. awe at

  955. God.

  956. Now, it's

  957. unfortunate that

  958. we have robbed

  959. the word

  960. awe of some

  961. of its

  962. impact these

  963. days.

  964. It's been

  965. lost through

  966. a lot of

  967. flippant use,

  968. something that

  969. I do way

  970. too often and

  971. my children

  972. do.

  973. Drove into

  974. the car park

  975. at Chats

  976. with Chase

  977. the other

  978. day and

  979. one of the

  980. kids pointed

  981. out a car

  982. and said,

  983. oh, Dad,

  984. that is an

  985. awesome car.

  986. And my

  987. immediate

  988. response was,

  989. yes.

  990. I said,

  991. why is it

  992. awesome?

  993. It's

  994. orange.

  995. Now, it

  996. just so

  997. happens it

  998. was a

  999. half million

  1000. dollar

  1001. McLaren.

  1002. And orange

  1003. wasn't the

  1004. first thing

  1005. that came

  1006. into mind

  1007. when I

  1008. saw it.

  1009. I did

  1010. agree it

  1011. was an

  1012. awesome

  1013. car.

  1014. You know,

  1015. there is a

  1016. sense of

  1017. dread.

  1018. You get

  1019. behind the

  1020. wheel of a

  1021. McLaren and

  1022. put your

  1023. foot onto

  1024. the floor,

  1025. there is

  1026. going to be

  1027. an element

  1028. of fear

  1029. that's going

  1030. to come

  1031. to mind,

  1032. I think,

  1033. and you're

  1034. going to

  1035. feel that

  1036. in a way

  1037. that I

  1038. don't

  1039. feel it

  1040. in my

  1041. Ford

  1042. territory.

  1043. So there

  1044. is a

  1045. sense of

  1046. awe,

  1047. but even

  1048. then I

  1049. think a

  1050. McLaren is

  1051. pushing the

  1052. boundary of

  1053. the definition

  1054. of the

  1055. word

  1056. awe.

  1057. A

  1058. tornado

  1059. is awesome.

  1060. It's

  1061. something you

  1062. want to

  1063. look at,

  1064. but it's

  1065. something that

  1066. you're afraid

  1067. of.

  1068. A burger

  1069. is not

  1070. awesome.

  1071. It's

  1072. tasty,

  1073. it's not

  1074. awesome.

  1075. Niagara

  1076. Falls is

  1077. awesome.

  1078. A music

  1079. CD might

  1080. sound

  1081. great,

  1082. but it's

  1083. not

  1084. awesome.

  1085. You see,

  1086. a fear

  1087. of God

  1088. acknowledges

  1089. the greatness

  1090. of God,

  1091. that he

  1092. is unfathomably

  1093. great.

  1094. He is

  1095. infinitely

  1096. greater than

  1097. the tornado

  1098. of Niagara

  1099. Falls.

  1100. He is

  1101. infinitely

  1102. greater than

  1103. the most

  1104. significant

  1105. of nations.

  1106. He controls

  1107. all rulers.

  1108. He puts

  1109. the heavens

  1110. in place.

  1111. He spreads

  1112. out the

  1113. earth.

  1114. He holds

  1115. all things

  1116. together by

  1117. the power

  1118. of his

  1119. word.

  1120. He is

  1121. a God

  1122. of transcendent

  1123. holiness.

  1124. He is

  1125. glorious

  1126. perfection,

  1127. more than

  1128. moral purity,

  1129. no darkness,

  1130. no evil,

  1131. no brokenness

  1132. at all.

  1133. He is

  1134. awesome.

  1135. He is

  1136. worthy

  1137. of our

  1138. awe.

  1139. That's

  1140. why you see

  1141. throughout the

  1142. Bible,

  1143. whether anyone

  1144. is confronted

  1145. with God

  1146. at all,

  1147. they fall

  1148. down on

  1149. their face

  1150. and say,

  1151. I'm not

  1152. worthy to

  1153. be in your

  1154. presence.

  1155. fear of

  1156. the Lord

  1157. is

  1158. trusting

  1159. God.

  1160. A

  1161. relationship

  1162. where you

  1163. trust God

  1164. is what it

  1165. looks like

  1166. to fear

  1167. God.

  1168. Proverbs

    Proverbs 3:5

  1169. 3,

  1170. verses 5

  1171. and 6,

  1172. trust in

  1173. the Lord

  1174. with all

  1175. your heart,

  1176. lean not

  1177. on your

  1178. own

  1179. understanding

  1180. and in

  1181. all your

  1182. ways submit

  1183. to him

  1184. and he

  1185. will make

  1186. your path

  1187. straight.

  1188. You see,

  1189. fear of

  1190. the Lord

  1191. means

  1192. unconditional

  1193. trust,

  1194. not relying

  1195. on how

  1196. we think

  1197. the world

  1198. works,

  1199. not relying

  1200. upon our

  1201. knowledge

  1202. and our

  1203. wisdom

  1204. of what

  1205. we think

  1206. the patterns

  1207. are and

  1208. what the

  1209. patterns

  1210. should be,

  1211. but trust

  1212. in God's

  1213. revelation

  1214. of how

  1215. things actually

  1216. are and

  1217. how things

  1218. actually work

  1219. and what

  1220. we're meant

  1221. to do

  1222. as a result

  1223. of it.

  1224. In

  1225. Isaiah 40

  1226. we get a

  1227. glimpse of

  1228. God's

  1229. infinite

  1230. greatness

  1231. in holding

  1232. the vast

  1233. waters of

  1234. the earth,

  1235. all the

  1236. oceans,

  1237. it says

  1238. he holds

  1239. them in

  1240. the hollow

  1241. of his

  1242. hand and

  1243. he weighs

  1244. the

  1245. mountain

  1246. ranges

  1247. on a

  1248. scale.

  1249. End of

  1250. Isaiah

  1251. talks about

  1252. God,

  1253. the earth

  1254. is God's

  1255. footstool

  1256. and in

  1257. Isaiah 40

  1258. when he's

  1259. talking about

  1260. the greatness

  1261. of God

  1262. Isaiah says

  1263. this,

  1264. who can

  1265. fathom the

  1266. spirit of

  1267. the Lord

  1268. or instruct

  1269. the Lord

  1270. as his

  1271. counsellor?

  1272. Whom did

  1273. the Lord

  1274. consult to

  1275. enlighten

  1276. him and

  1277. who taught

  1278. him the

  1279. right way?

  1280. Who was

  1281. it that

  1282. taught him

  1283. knowledge and

  1284. showed him

  1285. the path

  1286. of understanding?

  1287. In other

  1288. words,

  1289. so,

  1290. who was

  1291. God's

  1292. advisors?

  1293. Who

  1294. served as

  1295. his

  1296. advisors?

  1297. You?

  1298. Me?

  1299. No,

  1300. Isaiah,

  1301. you're

  1302. ridiculous.

  1303. Who was

  1304. there when

  1305. he was

  1306. plotting out

  1307. the design

  1308. of a

  1309. DNA and

  1310. said,

  1311. actually,

  1312. God,

  1313. you need

  1314. to do it

  1315. this way?

  1316. Anyone?

  1317. Everyone?

  1318. Point of

  1319. Isaiah 40

  1320. is God

  1321. wants your

  1322. trust,

  1323. not your

  1324. advice on

  1325. how the

  1326. world works.

  1327. It's absurd

  1328. to think that

  1329. we can add

  1330. anything,

  1331. and yet so

  1332. often we want

  1333. to be his

  1334. advisors.

  1335. We continue

  1336. to tell him

  1337. how certain

  1338. circumstances

  1339. should be

  1340. changed,

  1341. and we

  1342. question his

  1343. wisdom when

  1344. we don't

  1345. understand what

  1346. he's doing.

  1347. every area

  1348. of life.

  1349. There are

  1350. two questions

  1351. for us.

  1352. Firstly,

  1353. are you

  1354. willing to

  1355. do whatever

  1356. God says

  1357. in the

  1358. Bible on

  1359. issue,

  1360. whether you

  1361. agree with

  1362. it or not,

  1363. because his

  1364. wisdom is

  1365. infinitely greater

  1366. than yours?

  1367. Are you

  1368. willing to

  1369. trust that

  1370. he and

  1371. only he has

  1372. the whole

  1373. pattern of

  1374. the way the

  1375. world works?

  1376. trust?

  1377. And second

  1378. question is,

  1379. are you

  1380. willing to

  1381. accept anything

  1382. that God

  1383. sends to

  1384. any area

  1385. of your

  1386. life,

  1387. whether you

  1388. understand it

  1389. or not?

  1390. Because he

  1391. is worthy

  1392. and he

  1393. is wise

  1394. and he

  1395. knows what's

  1396. best.

  1397. He knows

  1398. how to

  1399. grow you

  1400. in wisdom.

  1401. See,

  1402. the fear

  1403. of the

  1404. Lord is

  1405. a life

  1406. of trust

  1407. even

  1408. through a

  1409. life of

  1410. discipline.

  1411. One of

  1412. the key

  1413. things we

  1414. need to

  1415. see and

  1416. to lean

  1417. on is

  1418. what God

  1419. says about

  1420. the times

  1421. when the

  1422. patterns of

  1423. life don't

  1424. make sense

  1425. for us.

  1426. Those times

  1427. when we

  1428. can't see

  1429. what God

  1430. is doing.

  1431. Now I

  1432. think that

  1433. if we're

  1434. to hold

  1435. on to

  1436. this,

  1437. that even

  1438. when the

  1439. bad times

  1440. come and

  1441. the suffering

  1442. hits,

  1443. I believe

  1444. this turbo

  1445. charges our

  1446. growth in

  1447. wisdom.

  1448. It's

  1449. right there

  1450. in verses

  1451. 11 and

  1452. 12 of

  1453. Proverbs 3,

  1454. my son,

  1455. do not

  1456. despise the

  1457. Lord's

  1458. discipline and

  1459. do not

  1460. resent his

  1461. rebuke because

  1462. the Lord

  1463. disciplines those

  1464. he loves.

  1465. As a

  1466. father,

  1467. the son,

  1468. he delights

  1469. in.

  1470. You see,

  1471. what a

  1472. father does

  1473. at times

  1474. is that

  1475. they bring

  1476. things into

  1477. a child's

  1478. life which

  1479. are painful.

  1480. We actually

  1481. bring them

  1482. into a

  1483. child's

  1484. life which

  1485. are painful

  1486. in order

  1487. for the

  1488. child to

  1489. grow and

  1490. to flourish.

  1491. And I'm

  1492. assuming that

  1493. every parent

  1494. wants their

  1495. child to

  1496. make the

  1497. right choices

  1498. in life and

  1499. so therefore

  1500. discipline is

  1501. essential.

  1502. People who

  1503. live charmed

  1504. lives live

  1505. shallow lives.

  1506. Our

  1507. strengths and

  1508. our weaknesses

  1509. become obvious

  1510. when they are

  1511. tested.

  1512. God's

  1513. discipline shapes

  1514. us in the

  1515. same way.

  1516. You see,

  1517. we don't often

  1518. really trust

  1519. God until we

  1520. are drowning.

  1521. We don't

  1522. often come

  1523. to see that

  1524. Jesus is

  1525. all that we

  1526. need until

  1527. Jesus is

  1528. all that we

  1529. have.

  1530. God's

  1531. discipline is

  1532. designed to

  1533. grow us in

  1534. wisdom.

  1535. It

  1536. turbocharges

  1537. all the

  1538. things that

  1539. move us

  1540. towards wisdom.

  1541. Bible reading,

  1542. prayer,

  1543. the community

  1544. of believers,

  1545. all that sort

  1546. of thing.

  1547. You see,

  1548. it's also

  1549. true that

  1550. suffering can

  1551. have exact

  1552. opposite effect

  1553. on someone.

  1554. It can

  1555. make you

  1556. prouder.

  1557. Suffering can

  1558. in fact make

  1559. you prouder.

  1560. You know,

  1561. you don't

  1562. understand,

  1563. Steve,

  1564. what I've

  1565. had to go

  1566. through.

  1567. You've just

  1568. never had what

  1569. I've had to

  1570. go through.

  1571. Make you

  1572. feel better

  1573. than other

  1574. people,

  1575. more noble

  1576. than other

  1577. people.

  1578. Suffering can

  1579. also make you

  1580. a coward

  1581. because you

  1582. become so

  1583. broken you

  1584. couldn't face

  1585. another thing.

  1586. You know,

  1587. I've had so

  1588. many disappointments

  1589. with people

  1590. in life,

  1591. I'm just

  1592. going to

  1593. completely

  1594. withdraw away

  1595. from people.

  1596. That's a

  1597. cowardly

  1598. response.

  1599. Suffering can

  1600. make you

  1601. quite bitter.

  1602. And so

  1603. God's

  1604. discipline

  1605. that comes

  1606. from his

  1607. all-knowing

  1608. wise hand

  1609. pushes you

  1610. in two

  1611. different

  1612. directions.

  1613. Either in

  1614. growth in

  1615. wisdom and

  1616. greater trust

  1617. in God,

  1618. or it pushes

  1619. you further

  1620. and further

  1621. towards foolishness.

  1622. One or the

  1623. other.

  1624. One or the

  1625. suffering is

  1626. inevitable.

  1627. It will

  1628. make you

  1629. wise,

  1630. it will

  1631. make you

  1632. stupid.

  1633. The fear

  1634. of the Lord

  1635. is the

  1636. key.

  1637. God's

  1638. wisdom,

  1639. the

  1640. God's

  1641. wisdom,

  1642. the

  1643. God's

  1644. wisdom,

  1645. the

  1646. God of

  1647. tremendous

  1648. wisdom,

  1649. this God

  1650. who is

  1651. awesome,

  1652. is the

  1653. God who

  1654. delights in

  1655. you when

  1656. it happens.

  1657. It's so

  1658. essential for

  1659. us to know

  1660. this,

  1661. know this,

  1662. know this.

  1663. The Lord's

  1664. disciplines

  1665. those he

  1666. loves.

  1667. As a

  1668. father,

  1669. the son,

  1670. he delights

  1671. in.

  1672. You have

  1673. to be

  1674. absolutely

  1675. sure that

  1676. he loves

  1677. you and

  1678. delights in

  1679. you when

  1680. the bad

  1681. things happen

  1682. or the

  1683. suffering is

  1684. going to

  1685. harden you

  1686. and it's

  1687. going to

  1688. make you

  1689. turn away

  1690. from God

  1691. and life

  1692. and make

  1693. you arrogant

  1694. and proud

  1695. because you

  1696. think you

  1697. know better

  1698. than God.

  1699. Discovering

  1700. the love

  1701. and the

  1702. mercy and

  1703. the delight

  1704. and the

  1705. grace of

  1706. God is

  1707. the key

  1708. to the

  1709. life of

  1710. fearing

  1711. God,

  1712. which is

  1713. the beginning

  1714. of wisdom

  1715. and the

  1716. key to

  1717. growth in

  1718. wisdom.

  1719. In

  1720. Proverbs

  1721. 3.3

  1722. it says

  1723. let love

  1724. and faithfulness

  1725. never leave

  1726. you,

  1727. bind them

  1728. around your

  1729. neck,

  1730. write them

  1731. on the

  1732. tablet of

  1733. your heart.

  1734. The words

  1735. love and

  1736. faithfulness

  1737. there are

  1738. very specific

  1739. in the

  1740. Hebrew Old

  1741. Testament.

  1742. They are

  1743. referring to

  1744. God's

  1745. covenant

  1746. love and

  1747. God's

  1748. faithfulness

  1749. and they're

  1750. about his

  1751. never giving

  1752. up,

  1753. never dying,

  1754. always and

  1755. forever love

  1756. for his

  1757. people.

  1758. The grace

  1759. of God,

  1760. his delight

  1761. in us

  1762. because of

  1763. Jesus is

  1764. the key

  1765. to suffering,

  1766. softening

  1767. us and

  1768. humbling

  1769. us and

  1770. growing us

  1771. in wisdom.

  1772. So how

  1773. can you be

  1774. sure that

  1775. God delights

  1776. in us?

  1777. In

  1778. Hebrews 12

  1779. in the Old

  1780. Testament,

  1781. sorry,

  1782. in the New

  1783. Testament,

  1784. back towards

  1785. the back,

  1786. these verses

  1787. from

  1788. Proverbs

    Proverbs 3:11

  1789. 3,

  1790. verses 11

  1791. and 12

  1792. are picked

  1793. up and

  1794. they're

  1795. dumped into

  1796. Hebrews 12

  1797. and they

  1798. go like

  1799. this,

  1800. just before

  1801. it in

  1802. Hebrews 12

  1803. it says

  1804. this,

  1805. let us

  1806. fix our

  1807. eyes on

  1808. Jesus,

  1809. the pioneer

  1810. and perfecter

  1811. of faith,

  1812. for the joy

  1813. set before

  1814. him endured

  1815. the cross,

  1816. scorning its

  1817. shame and

  1818. he sat

  1819. down at the

  1820. right hand

  1821. of the

  1822. throne of

  1823. God.

  1824. right there,

  1825. right there

  1826. in Hebrews

  1827. 12 is the

  1828. confidence that

  1829. we need.

  1830. We get the

  1831. confidence there,

  1832. right there,

  1833. that we are a

  1834. child of God

  1835. when we see

  1836. what Jesus

  1837. has done for

  1838. us.

  1839. You see,

  1840. the baptism

  1841. of Jesus,

  1842. you might

  1843. remember this

  1844. back right at

  1845. the beginning,

  1846. baptism of

  1847. Jesus,

  1848. the spirit

  1849. of God

  1850. descended on

  1851. him and

  1852. a voice

  1853. came from

  1854. heaven and

  1855. said,

  1856. this is my

  1857. son with

  1858. whom I am

  1859. well pleased,

  1860. or this is

  1861. my son,

  1862. I delight in

  1863. him.

  1864. And right

  1865. throughout his

  1866. life,

  1867. whenever Jesus

  1868. turns to

  1869. God,

  1870. he says,

  1871. Father,

  1872. Father,

  1873. Father,

  1874. when the

  1875. disciples say,

  1876. Jesus,

  1877. teach us how

  1878. to pray,

  1879. he says,

  1880. Father,

  1881. begin with

  1882. our Father,

  1883. except for

  1884. one place,

  1885. it's at the

  1886. cross.

  1887. Jesus cries

  1888. out,

  1889. my God,

  1890. my God,

  1891. why have

  1892. you forsaken

  1893. me?

  1894. why have

  1895. you abandoned

  1896. me?

  1897. And the

  1898. reason he

  1899. cries out that

  1900. is because he

  1901. was being

  1902. expelled,

  1903. he's being

  1904. rejected.

  1905. He was

  1906. getting what

  1907. we deserve

  1908. from God

  1909. so that when

  1910. we put our

  1911. trust in

  1912. him,

  1913. our sins

  1914. are forgiven.

  1915. He took

  1916. the punishment

  1917. from God

  1918. that we

  1919. deserve so

  1920. that when

  1921. we believe

  1922. in him,

  1923. our sins

  1924. are dealt

  1925. with.

  1926. But not

  1927. just that.

  1928. In John

    John 1 chapter mention

  1929. chapter 1,

  1930. which we

  1931. looked at

  1932. last week,

  1933. where Jesus

  1934. is the

  1935. wisdom of

  1936. God,

  1937. it says

  1938. this about

  1939. those who

  1940. put their

  1941. trust in

  1942. the wisdom

  1943. of God.

  1944. Jesus, it

  1945. says,

  1946. to all

  1947. who did

  1948. receive

  1949. him,

  1950. to those

  1951. who

  1952. believed in

  1953. his name,

  1954. he gave

  1955. the right

  1956. to become

  1957. children of

  1958. God.

  1959. Children

  1960. born not

  1961. of natural

  1962. descent nor

  1963. of human

  1964. decision or

  1965. of a husband's

  1966. will,

  1967. but born

  1968. of God.

  1969. God,

  1970. Jesus

  1971. faced

  1972. rejection,

  1973. suffering,

  1974. rejection,

  1975. so that we

  1976. can be

  1977. included as

  1978. sons of

  1979. God,

  1980. sons to

  1981. whom he

  1982. delights

  1983. him.

  1984. Through what

  1985. Jesus done,

  1986. we adopted

  1987. as sons of

  1988. God,

  1989. brought into

  1990. God's

  1991. family,

  1992. Jesus lost

  1993. his sonship

  1994. so that we

  1995. can be

  1996. children of

  1997. God,

  1998. and therefore

  1999. we can trust

  2000. him in

  2001. suffering because

  2002. he himself

  2003. has suffered.

  2004. let me tell

  2005. you that

  2006. that story

  2007. just there

  2008. is the

  2009. story that

  2010. rewrites

  2011. everything

  2012. for our

  2013. world.

  2014. And that's

  2015. the story

  2016. that is

  2017. the story

  2018. that rewrites

  2019. your story.

  2020. Totally

  2021. changes

  2022. everything.

  2023. It

  2024. reorientates

  2025. your whole

  2026. worldview.

  2027. It

  2028. reorientates

  2029. every way

  2030. that you

  2031. view this

  2032. world.

  2033. It's the

  2034. starting point

  2035. and the

  2036. foundation of

  2037. a life of

  2038. wisdom.

  2039. Amen.
