  1. It's great to be in church with us tonight.

  2. It's been a long day.

  3. It's been a great day.

  4. So many new things here at St. Paul's.

  5. We are sitting sideways.

  6. It was kind of interesting seeing people come into church this morning and for the first

  7. time trying to work out, where do I sit now?

  8. You know, like it's all so different.

  9. We're faced the wrong way and there's a little bit of confusion, but it's a lot of different

  10. stuff, a lot of things backwards.

  11. You know, Sam's got his shirt tucked in tonight and he's wearing a tie and he's had a shower.

  12. Um, and, uh, you know, Andrew Green, it's summertime.

  13. It's 27 degrees.

  14. He's got shoes on and, uh, Nick's got his best thongs on.

  15. I mean, it's, uh, there's so many things and I'm saving money ready for vision Sunday with

  16. shampoo and hair care products.

  17. Uh, so it's, it's, it's a, it's, it's a lot of things different.

  18. We're coming to church today, uh, and it, it marks a vision month for us.

  19. Uh, this is the kickoff as Sam has indicated and it's one of the annual highlights, uh,

  20. for me with church calendar.

  21. Uh, it's, you know, up there.

  22. I don't want to diminish Easter and Christmas at all, but it's up there in terms of my views,

  23. in terms of for us and the importance of it for us as a church.

  24. Um, I'm especially excited for this, uh, four weeks.

  25. Uh, every time I get the vision month, I think this is going to be the best vision month ever.

  26. Like this is so important for us.

  27. And, and this one is particularly important because there is something that has, uh, been

  28. bothering me for about 18 months now, which has kind of been resolved for me in the

  29. last couple of months.

  30. Um, it started for me at the end of our time to build project and the opening of the international

  31. Chinese school at the beginning of 2015.

  32. Uh, they were, uh, two major projects that are a significant focus for us over a four year

  33. period.

  34. Uh, and both of these major projects and many small ones and a before and after required

  35. vision.

  36. Uh, and, but as I saw it, they weren't the vision.

  37. That is the, the vision for St. Paul's was not to do stuff with our buildings and to start

  38. a school.

  39. That wasn't the vision.

  40. That's, it was something else.

  41. There was a, they weren't the major goal for us.

  42. They served a much larger vision, but what was it?

  43. That was, that was the important and the missing piece for me.

  44. Uh, and it's an important missing piece because a common vision for a church has a special

  45. unifying effect.

  46. It draws people together to a common focus and commitment to see God's purposes achieved

  47. through them, uh, as a church.

  48. And so a church without vision, uh, tends to lack cohesion as it clings to present or past

  49. traditions and resist the possibilities that change can bring.

  50. And without looking forward to the possibilities of what, uh, God can do, there is no challenge

  51. to our faith individually or corporately and, and no excitement associated with seeing specific

  52. targets met become reality as God works amongst his people.

  53. Now, while we have had a vision that united us, uh, in time to build in the National Chinese

  54. School, there were very significant things.

  55. In fact, 95% of the church voted to proceed with both of those things.

  56. We poured a bunch of resources into a short period of time and made it happen.

  57. They weren't the vision, the big vision.

  58. They wasn't the big thing that we're seeking to do together.

  59. Um, and yet the vision was there.

  60. Uh, we've, we've actually been working on it, uh, but the vision in fact needed to find us.

  61. Um, I wrote a vision statement for us in 2000, uh, sorry, I wrote a vision statement for us

  62. for vision 2020 when I launched it back in, uh, the end of 2009.

  63. Uh, that vision statement was a mistake.

  64. It's one thing that I regret.

  65. You know, we, we went through all this rigmarole, uh, back in the end of 2009.

  66. We got this thing printed up in a booklet.

  67. And, uh, basically as soon as the ink was dry in the booklet, it was like, eh, that's,

  68. you know, uh, I, I, you know, I've, I've worked with everything else in there.

  69. I continue to push everything else in there.

  70. But the one regret was the vision statement that I'd wrote in that booklet.

  71. And it's still in print, still floating around, you know, old things die hard.

  72. Uh, what has been receiving quite a lot of attention since the end of 2009, uh, is our purpose and our values as a church.

  73. Our purpose and values are about who we are.

  74. And since 2009, we've been great on this gradual journey, if you like, of rediscovering who we are as a church.

  75. Our vision, if you like, has been to rediscover our purpose.

  76. That's kind of what we've been working on.

  77. And the process of rediscovering the reason why we exist has resulted in the vision finding us.

  78. As we've captured our purpose, the vision has found us.

  79. And this vision, uh, that I'll be talking to you about tonight is an intersection of my life and my ministry passion.

  80. Uh, it, it's, it's also an industry.

  81. It's also an intersection of the needs of our community and also the gifts and the passion.

  82. Uh, for us as a church.

  83. And you bring all those things together and where they meet, you have a common vision of God's purposes being worked out amongst it.

  84. And so I, I regard it as a God moment.

  85. Uh, it was in July this year.

  86. Uh, I was away on retreat with a purpose pastors and one of our wardens.

  87. And, uh, and our goal was to do as we do these retreats each year is to work out what's, what's the thing that we really need to nail as a church?

  88. What do we need to improve on?

  89. And where, where do you think God's heading, uh, for us in the future?

  90. So we try and work on how to take that next step for us as a church into the next year.

  91. There was no plan for us at that moment to formulate a vision statement.

  92. Uh, but the more we talked and reflected on that very first night, it just became clearer and clearer that the vision found us.

  93. Uh, I went to bed on that first night with my mind just spinning and my heart was just sort of starting to burn again with this passion that I have for us as a church.

  94. And even in the very early stages of this, uh, forming vision, it was connecting so well with, with my passion for ministry, but also, uh, what I would see that we were being shaped here at St. Paul's.

  95. Uh, since then the staff and the parish council have been kicking it around, sitting on it, praying about it, sharpening it, um, and praying about it and just get to a point where we're just gone.

  96. That's it.

  97. It's so closely connected with our, with our purpose.

  98. Uh, we have had it in visual form since I introduced this new logo back in 2010.

  99. Back in 2010, I sat with some graphic designers and said to me, so what's your, what's your vision for the church?

  100. What's your passion?

  101. I went, ah, it's this, this, and this, and this.

  102. And they drew that.

  103. And it's like, it's been our logo ever since.

  104. And so, um, so the vision's been there.

  105. I'm just slow, you know?

  106. Uh, you know, as Sam said, we've got our limitations and that's one of my limitations.

  107. Well, you know, it's, it's been there and it's been obvious.

  108. Just haven't seen it.

  109. So in case here, so here it is.

  110. In case you didn't know what St. Paul's, uh, purpose is, uh, it reads, St. Paul's exists to know Jesus, treasure Jesus,

  111. and represent Jesus for God's glory and the joy of all people.

  112. That statement is about who we are.

  113. You, you, it's absolutely essential for us that that statement is about who we are.

  114. That's the reason we exist.

  115. We don't exist for any other purpose than that.

  116. Therefore, given that that's who we are and that's why we exist, this is what we seek to do.

  117. Our vision is to be united in our desperation for the world around us to encounter Jesus

  118. and our desire to represent the diversity of Chatswood.

  119. Now, that vision just there is the basis by which we will evaluate all of our ministry practice

  120. and determine what we will and what we won't do, what we need to start doing, what we need to stop doing.

  121. Now, I've been reflecting on that and I've been working with it with parish council and, and, uh, staff since July.

  122. And, uh, and, and there is so much of my, my personal ministry passion, which is connected to that statement.

  123. So I don't, I don't expect you in this moment, having just heard it, to sort of all of a sudden,

  124. oh, praise God, drop to your knees and yes, that's what I've been waiting for, that sort of thing.

  125. You know, I, you know, give it time, give it time.

  126. And, uh, my, my intention over the next four weeks is to unpack it for us.

  127. Um, and in, and in doing that, I want to make the connections between who we are and what God seeks for us to do, uh,

  128. to become a little bit clearer for us.

  129. Um, and that, and that in the hope of that, that your, your hearts will grow in passion for it in such a way that it changes your life.

  130. As it has already for me since July.

  131. We'll talk about that in a little bit.

  132. There are four key words linked in four key ideas here that are my focus over the next four weeks.

  133. The words unity, diversity, us, and the world.

  134. And today I want to simply focus on the word unity.

  135. It's there in the first part of the statement.

  136. It says, we seek to be united in our desperation for the world around us to encounter Jesus.

  137. And I think we want to be united in wanting that outcome because our purpose statement is explicit.

  138. Absolutely explicit in saying that Jesus is the main thing for us as a church.

  139. Jesus is our all-consuming passion.

  140. Now, I said a moment ago that a common vision for a church has a special unifying effect.

  141. And that's true.

  142. But it's not the foundation.

  143. It's not the deepest foundation of our unity together as a church.

  144. Our unity is founded on the person and the work of the Lord Jesus.

  145. On the person of the Lord Jesus and his work of redemption through his death and his resurrection.

  146. In Colossians chapter 1, we get a glimpse of why Jesus is the main thing for us.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  147. Why he is the ultimate and all other things are not ultimate.

  148. All other things should take their proper place as being less from Jesus.

  149. And this is part of the discovery that we've been making as a church.

  150. Rediscovering our purpose of Jesus being the main thing for us.

  151. Verses of 14 to 20, we are given, Colossians 1, 14 to 20, we are given a litany of amazing truths about the Lord Jesus.

  152. And they are probably the most concentrated descriptions of the glories and the majesty of Jesus in the entire New Testament.

  153. There are at least 15 of them that I want to run through very quickly for you.

  154. Verse 14, it says,

  155. In him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  156. Verse 15, he is the image of the invisible God.

  157. Verse 15 again, he is the firstborn of all creation.

  158. That means he is the specially honored firstborn and only son over all creation.

  159. The inheritor of the estate, so to speak.

  160. Verse 16, it says,

  161. By him all things were created in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  162. Verse 16 again, all things were created through him.

  163. Verse 16 again, all things were created for him.

  164. Verse 17, he is before all things.

  165. Verse 17 again, in him all things hold together.

  166. Verse 18, he is the head of the body of the church.

  167. 18 again, he is the beginning.

  168. 18 again, he is the firstborn from the dead.

  169. 18 again, in everything he is preeminent.

  170. 19, in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

  171. Verse 20, he reconciled all things to himself, whether on earth or in heaven.

  172. Verse 20 again, he makes peace by the blood of the cross.

  173. Let me just say, friends, if your heart ever wavers, grows cold to the magnificence and the treasure that Jesus is,

  174. can I just encourage you just to come to these verses?

  175. Come to these verses and just reflect again and again who Jesus is, what he has achieved for you.

  176. Memorize this list of glories and ask God, this is the key point as well.

  177. Ask God to give you affections, to give you passions that correspond to the magnificence and greatness of Jesus.

  178. Because it is so easy for me to run through a list of that, it's the third time I've done it today,

  179. to run through a list of that and for my heart not to be warmed, strangely warmed.

  180. It's so easy for me to sit there and go, oh yeah, Colossians 1, I know it.

  181. Did a Bible study on that.

  182. Memorize it.

  183. It says here that Jesus created all that is.

  184. They were created through him.

  185. And it also says that all things were created for him.

  186. All that came into being exists for Christ.

  187. That is, everything exists to display the greatness and the glory and the magnificence of Jesus.

  188. That means that nothing, absolutely nothing in the universe exists for its own sake.

  189. There's not a single thing in this universe that exists for its own sake.

  190. Everything, from the bottom of the oceans to the top of the mountains,

  191. from the smallest particle to the biggest star,

  192. from the most boring school subject to the most interesting science experiment,

  193. from the ugliest cockroach to the most beautiful human,

  194. from the greatest saint to the most wicked genocidal dictator.

  195. Everything, everything exists.

  196. Exists to make the greatness of Jesus more fully known.

  197. And that means you, it means me, and my life, and your life,

  198. and it means us at St. Paul's as a church.

  199. We exist to make Jesus look magnificent as he is.

  200. He's the sovereign Lord of all.

  201. He's the center and he's the foundation.

  202. Our unity is founded in who Jesus is.

  203. He is, as it says in Colossians,

  204. he has the supremacy over everything.

  205. We are also united, not just in the person of Jesus,

  206. but also the work of Jesus.

  207. So we're united in Jesus and by his work on our behalf.

  208. Have a look at, let me jump to Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  209. We get again the magnificence of Jesus and what he has achieved for us.

  210. Verse 3 of Ephesians 1 is the summary verse of the chapter.

  211. It's about what God has done for us in Jesus

  212. and what our response to Jesus should be.

  213. It says,

  214. Praise be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  215. who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing.

  216. Every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  217. Nothing is lacking.

  218. Nothing is overlooked.

  219. Nothing is held back by God.

  220. And then we get a list over the next few verses of what these things are.

  221. Verse 5, it says,

  222. We have been adopted as God's children.

  223. We call the creator of the universe Father.

  224. And all the intimacy that belongs with that.

  225. My dad's birthday today, I rang him up this morning.

  226. He's 78.

  227. Quick calculation.

  228. Fortunately, I didn't mention it, a number.

  229. And I rang him up and talked to him and said,

  230. Hey, Dad.

  231. You know, the privilege of Christians to be able to do that

  232. with the Father of the universe.

  233. At any time.

  234. Direct access to him.

  235. Through Jesus.

  236. We're adopted as his sons.

  237. Verse 17,

  238. We have been redeemed.

  239. We were separated from God because of our rejection.

  240. But a price has been paid by God to buy us back to himself.

  241. Verse 7 again,

  242. We have forgiveness of sins.

  243. The very thing that separates us from God has been forgiven.

  244. The offended one, the rejected one,

  245. paid our debt to get us back to himself.

  246. And the slate is clean.

  247. There is no record or wrong.

  248. Nothing is ever going to be brought back up again.

  249. There is nothing to pay.

  250. The debt's clean.

  251. I've heard this great story.

  252. In fact, it's a slight difference from the story I told this morning.

  253. I checked the facts since this morning.

  254. Bloke bought a Bentley and he's driving his Bentley in Europe.

  255. And it broke down on a motorway in Europe.

  256. So he rang his dealer back in London and said,

  257. Hey, dude, my Bentley's broken.

  258. And they said,

  259. We'll send a technician.

  260. And he's like,

  261. What?

  262. Send a technician over in Europe from London.

  263. I mean, it's not very far.

  264. It's here to Melbourne sort of thing.

  265. And they flew this dude over on a private jet.

  266. They got the Bentley,

  267. took it to the airport and put it on the plane.

  268. It was a jet that you could put a car on.

  269. Put it on a plane,

  270. flew it back to London with the guy in the car.

  271. Now, of course, the guy who owns the car is thinking,

  272. Crap, this is going to hurt.

  273. This is going to be very expensive.

  274. And about four to six weeks later,

  275. no bill.

  276. Got his car back, no bill.

  277. And so he rang up the dealership and said,

  278. So, what's the damage?

  279. And they said,

  280. What do you mean?

  281. They said, you know, fixing my car.

  282. And they said,

  283. No, no.

  284. There's no bill.

  285. There's no problem with your car.

  286. Hang on a bit.

  287. This bloke came over at a private jet and flew my car back.

  288. No, that didn't happen.

  289. And they,

  290. What are you talking about?

  291. They said,

  292. Bentleys don't break down.

  293. Bentleys don't break down.

  294. And so,

  295. this guy was just astounded

  296. at something that should have been

  297. thousands, thousands, thousands, thousands of dollars.

  298. The slate's wiped clean.

  299. No bill to pay.

  300. And this is the picture here of Ephesians.

  301. We have forgiveness of sins.

  302. In verse 8,

  303. We have been lavished with all wisdom and understanding.

  304. God doesn't leave his people in the dark.

  305. He reveals to us,

  306. as we've just seen in our Proverbs series,

  307. how things work in this world.

  308. The way things actually are.

  309. How they work.

  310. And how do we live in accordance with it.

  311. Verse 9,

  312. God has made known to us the mystery of his plans for the world.

  313. We're not in the dark as to what the goal of eternity and time and space and everything,

  314. where it's all heading for.

  315. Verse 13,

  316. We are so intimate with God that we have received the Holy Spirit.

  317. God lives in us.

  318. Verse 14,

  319. Verse 14,

  320. We are now guaranteed an eternal inheritance.

  321. We have riches in heaven that would just blow our mind,

  322. that have reserve written all over them.

  323. They're guaranteed.

  324. And I think that Ephesians 1 is meant to overwhelm us.

  325. We put it together with cautions of the massive cosmic list of what God has achieved for us

  326. in the person of the Lord Jesus.

  327. Every single one of these blessings is staggering enough in itself.

  328. But you put them together and it is an awesome scene of how much God has achieved for us.

  329. And the big statement right through Ephesians chapter 1 is this little statement in how God has secured all this stuff for us.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  330. It is in Christ.

  331. Verse 3,

  332. Praise be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  333. which is what meant,

  334. that's our response,

  335. who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

  336. Verse 4,

  337. God chose us in him.

  338. That's in Jesus.

  339. Verse 5,

  340. We are adopted through Christ Jesus.

  341. Verse 7,

  342. In Jesus we have redemption.

  343. Verse 9,

  344. God purposed these things.

  345. In Jesus.

  346. Verse 11,

  347. In Jesus we were chosen.

  348. And please notice the motivation here from God.

  349. Verse 4,

  350. In love he predestined us.

  351. In verse 7,

  352. We have redemption in accordance with the riches of his grace.

  353. Verse 9,

  354. He made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure.

  355. Love,

  356. grace,

  357. good pleasure.

  358. Why has God done all this?

  359. It's because it's his character.

  360. It's who he is.

  361. It's not because we're lovely.

  362. It's because of who he is.

  363. And notice too that there's a direction.

  364. For those of you a little bit iffy about vision statements and stuff like that,

  365. God has a vision.

  366. Verse 9,

  367. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure,

  368. which he purposed in Christ to be put into effect when the times would have reached their fulfillment,

  369. to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

  370. That's God's vision of all things.

  371. God's grand plan is to move all of history towards a single unified goal.

  372. His vision is to bring all things in heaven and earth together under one head, even Christ.

  373. The goal of time,

  374. the goal of space,

  375. is all things under the lordship of Jesus as they were meant to be at the beginning.

  376. And I would suggest, therefore, that the single-minded submission to Jesus,

  377. single-minded submission to Jesus,

  378. is essential for the function of the church that's united under Jesus, under his lordship.

  379. It is practicing now what will be for all of eternity united under the lordship of Jesus.

  380. And so our purpose statement as a church says that is our main purpose.

  381. We want to know Jesus and treasure Jesus and represent Jesus for God's glory and the joy of all people.

  382. And if this vision for all things is to be united under Jesus,

  383. if that's the vision for all things,

  384. then that is the vision that shapes our life as a church and our practice as a church.

  385. Jesus is the primary basis of our unity.

  386. God has made us one.

  387. We belong to him.

  388. He is our lord.

  389. He is our savior.

  390. And we are mutually accountable to him.

  391. And what Ephesians goes on from there into chapter 2,

  392. calls God's people to work out the unity that they already have in Jesus,

  393. in our life together.

  394. As we're called to not just have unity,

  395. but also to practice unity,

  396. Ephesians 2, we see that all the barriers that separate people

  397. have been broken down by Jesus.

  398. Jesus is the great leveler,

  399. the great uniter of people.

  400. In Ephesians 4,

  401. we are told to live out our status of unity with our fellow believers in Jesus.

  402. In the first two verses of Ephesians 4,

  403. we are told to live as true followers of Jesus,

  404. with an attitude of humility and gentleness and patience and bearing with each other.

  405. Then in the third verse,

  406. we are called to make every effort.

  407. That's hard work, in other words.

  408. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace.

  409. Verse 3 in Ephesians 4 doesn't call us to develop a unity.

  410. It calls us to maintain the unity that we already have in Jesus.

  411. And verse 4 names seven key elements that affirm the base of our unity.

  412. And they all proceed with the word one.

  413. Seven elements.

  414. These seven elements are on the front page of our website.

  415. They were put there in 2010.

  416. You know, I'm slow.

  417. One body, one spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God.

  418. That's who we are as a church.

  419. What Ephesians affirms is that unity within the church

  420. is the natural outcome of being reconciled to God through Jesus.

  421. But we need to work on it.

  422. Ephesians 4 doesn't just refer to behavior that works for unity.

  423. It describes behaviors that, in fact, fractures unity.

  424. Sensuality, impurity, greed, falsehood, anger, laziness, unwholesome talk, bitterness,

  425. raging, brawling, slander, and malice.

  426. You see, we've got to work at it

  427. because the church is made up of natural enemies.

  428. That's who we are by nature.

  429. And our diversity as a church always, always threatens our unity.

  430. And what binds us together is not a common education,

  431. not a common race, not common income levels,

  432. not common politics, not common nationality,

  433. not common life experiences, not common accents,

  434. not common jobs, not common church tradition,

  435. not common dress, not common hairstyles,

  436. not common interests, not common denomination,

  437. not common Bible understanding,

  438. not common Bible understanding,

  439. or anything else, a myriad of other things.

  440. The key to practicing unity is embracing the wonder of what we have in Jesus.

  441. The Lord Jesus, as I've already said,

  442. is the great leveler of humanity.

  443. The very basic admission requirement into the local church

  444. and to this church is to see our desperate need for Jesus.

  445. That's the basic admission requirement,

  446. our desperate need for him.

  447. We have every one of us,

  448. every single one of us,

  449. no matter how well we project from the outside,

  450. have fallen short of what God expects for us,

  451. and therefore every single one of us come to Jesus as a beggar.

  452. Our hands open saying,

  453. please give me mercy.

  454. And so whether this is your first time at St. Paul's tonight,

  455. or whether you've been here for 40 years,

  456. we're all in the same boat.

  457. All in the same boat.

  458. This is a level playing field as a church.

  459. There is no place of special privilege and acknowledgement,

  460. only places of grace and responsibility.

  461. We all began at the cross.

  462. If you're Christian, you began at the cross,

  463. and we all finish at the cross.

  464. And that is humbling, and that is unifying.

  465. We are just as much in need of his grace.

  466. Now, when you start the Christian life,

  467. as what you live, you've done it for 60 years.

  468. Christians come together because they have been saved by Jesus Christ

  469. and come under his common lordship.

  470. And I just cannot put the central,

  471. central importance of unity any better than the great John Stott

  472. in his commentary on Ephesians,

  473. when he wrote,

  474. it is simply impossible with any shred of Christian integrity

  475. to go on proclaiming that Jesus by his cross

  476. has abolished the old divisions

  477. and created a single new humanity of love,

  478. while at the same time we are contradicting our message

  479. by tolerating racial or social or other barriers

  480. within our church fellowship.

  481. We need to get the failures of the church

  482. and our conscience to feel the offense to Christ,

  483. to weep over the credibility gap

  484. between the church's talk and the church's walk,

  485. to repent of our readiness,

  486. to excuse and even condone our failures

  487. and determine to do something about it.

  488. I wonder if anything is more urgent today

  489. for the honor of Christ and for the spread of the gospel

  490. than the church should be,

  491. and should be seen to be,

  492. what by God's purpose and Christ's achievement

  493. it already is a single new humanity,

  494. a model of human community,

  495. a family of reconciled brothers and sisters

  496. who love their father and love each other,

  497. the evident dwelling place of God by his spirit.

  498. Only then will the world believe in Christ as peacemaker.

  499. Only then will God receive the glory that is due to him.

  500. Jesus is our all-consuming passion.

  501. Now, Agnes Malauka was a renowned deep-sea cave diver.

  502. It was, in her words, an all-consuming passion.

  503. She uploaded her thoughts on YouTube,

  504. and this is what she said.

  505. She said,

  506. I dream of caves.

  507. It's an all-consuming interest.

  508. It's a passion.

  509. It's an obsession.

  510. There is no greater feeling in the world

  511. than finding a passage that no one ever

  512. in the history of the world has ever seen before.

  513. It is like a pursuit that is inherently dangerous.

  514. If you are pursuing the boundaries of your sport,

  515. you will find yourself taking bigger and bigger risks.

  516. And to me, those risks are worth it

  517. because the rewards are worth it.

  518. And on the 27th of February, 2011,

  519. she met that risk head-on

  520. when she died in one of Australia's

  521. longest underwater caves in South Australia.

  522. Now, we can admire the passion that drove her,

  523. a passion for which she paid the ultimate price.

  524. What Christianity proclaims

  525. and what I want to emphasize for us as this church,

  526. I want to continue to emphasize,

  527. I want it to be the banner over my life

  528. and over your life in an increasing sense,

  529. week after week, month after month,

  530. year after year,

  531. is that there is something grander,

  532. there is something bigger,

  533. there is something more majestic,

  534. more fulfilling to be consumed by than caves.

  535. Or by your reputation,

  536. or your vocation,

  537. or your family,

  538. your spouse,

  539. your kids,

  540. or your possessions,

  541. or your health,

  542. or your shopping,

  543. or your travel,

  544. or your books,

  545. or your education,

  546. or sex,

  547. or toys,

  548. or tradition,

  549. or ministry,

  550. or even St. Paul's,

  551. or even the vision statement of St. Paul's.

  552. In fact, it's not something,

  553. but someone,

  554. and that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  555. What if the Lord Jesus,

  556. what if his people were passionate,

  557. they were obsessed,

  558. they were consumed by him

  559. above all other hopes,

  560. and dreams,

  561. and visions,

  562. and identities.

  563. Our treasuring of the Lord Jesus

  564. above everything else,

  565. I believe,

  566. has risen over the last number of years,

  567. but I believe it's got to go even further.

  568. Only when we are taken by the wonder,

  569. and the glory,

  570. and the awe,

  571. and the majesty of the Lord Jesus,

  572. when we treasure him above everything else,

  573. will we start to make the choices

  574. that God calls us to.

  575. And I think that's the point

  576. of those two little parables

  577. that Sam read out for us

  578. in Matthew 13.

  579. There's one main point

  580. in those parables,

  581. and it's simply this,

  582. having the sovereign

  583. and saving reign

  584. of Jesus

  585. in our lives

  586. is so valuable

  587. that if we lose everything

  588. in order to have it,

  589. it is a joyful exchange.

  590. It says,

  591. the kingdom of heaven

  592. is like a treasure

  593. hidden in a field.

  594. When a man found it,

  595. he hid it again,

  596. and then in his joy,

  597. he went and he sold all that he had

  598. and he bought that field.

  599. Now,

  600. I'm taking the kingdom of heaven there

  601. to,

  602. in its full biblical context,

  603. as the reign of God and Jesus

  604. triumphing over everything

  605. that stands between you

  606. and everlasting life

  607. and everlasting joy

  608. in God's presence.

  609. I'm treating the kingdom of heaven here

  610. as the rule of God

  611. to save us

  612. from eternal destruction

  613. and to bring us

  614. into the enjoyment

  615. of Christ forever.

  616. And it says here

  617. that when that man

  618. found that,

  619. he sold everything he had

  620. and he did it with joy.

  621. To know Jesus,

  622. to be known by Jesus

  623. is so valuable

  624. that losing everything else

  625. in this world

  626. but getting Jesus

  627. is a happy trade-off.

  628. That is phenomenal.

  629. Or to put it more

  630. personally specifically,

  631. you can lose everything

  632. with joy

  633. if you gain Christ.

  634. And so the most basic question

  635. that God poses

  636. to each of us,

  637. to each of our hearts

  638. tonight

  639. and I think to us collectively

  640. as a church

  641. as we look to the future,

  642. has something

  643. or someone

  644. besides Jesus

  645. taken title to you,

  646. to your heart,

  647. to our collective

  648. heart,

  649. that is,

  650. that is,

  651. we're looking for something

  652. else apart from Jesus.

  653. Something else is our

  654. functional trust.

  655. Something else is our

  656. preoccupation.

  657. Something else is our

  658. loyalty,

  659. our service,

  660. our fear

  661. and our delight.

  662. What is it

  663. that you're looking to?

  664. Who is your

  665. functional

  666. saviour and Lord?

  667. I'm not asking you

  668. whether you've got a fish

  669. sticker on your fridge.

  670. I'm not asking you

  671. whether you've got a cross

  672. tattered in your head

  673. somewhere or

  674. what your daily

  675. quiet time like

  676. or whether you can recite

  677. the prayer book

  678. or that you give

  679. vast amounts of money

  680. to justice and mercy

  681. stuff around the world.

  682. I'm asking whether

  683. Jesus

  684. has the functional

  685. title of your heart.

  686. Ask yourself some questions.

  687. to who or what

  688. do I look for

  689. for life-sustaining

  690. stability,

  691. for security

  692. and for acceptance?

  693. What is it?

  694. What do I really want

  695. or expect out of life?

  696. What would really,

  697. really make me happy?

  698. What would really make me

  699. an acceptable person?

  700. Where do I look

  701. for power,

  702. for success?

  703. There's some of the

  704. questions to ask

  705. as to

  706. what has the functional

  707. title of your heart.

  708. Now the answers

  709. to those sorts of

  710. questions begin to tease

  711. whether Jesus is in fact

  712. our true treasure,

  713. our greatest treasure

  714. or whether we have

  715. something else

  716. which is a functional

  717. idol,

  718. something that we're

  719. looking to

  720. that takes on

  721. a God-like status

  722. for us.

  723. Whether we're looking

  724. to Jesus for our hope,

  725. for our security,

  726. for our identity,

  727. for our meaning

  728. or whether we're looking

  729. to something else,

  730. an idol.

  731. You see,

  732. everything that displaces

  733. Jesus from front and center

  734. in our lives

  735. displaces him from

  736. the place of supremacy

  737. the Bible calls it

  738. an idol.

  739. In the Old Testament

  740. especially,

  741. in the New Testament

  742. words like inordinate

  743. desires.

  744. Romans 1,

  745. 18 to 25

  746. is very telling.

  747. I'm not going to read

  748. the whole thing.

  749. It says that the reason

  750. we create idols

  751. is because we want

  752. control in our lives.

  753. Even though we know

  754. we owe God everything.

  755. Verse 21 says,

  756. For although they knew

  757. God,

  758. they neither glorified

  759. him as God

  760. nor gave thanks to him.

  761. And then down

  762. a few verses

  763. in 25,

  764. it describes the

  765. strategy by which

  766. we take control

  767. of our lives.

  768. We get God

  769. moving over to here

  770. and this is the

  771. strategy that we

  772. take control

  773. moving God

  774. out of the way.

  775. It says,

  776. we take created

  777. things,

  778. good things

  779. that God

  780. has made,

  781. we set our

  782. hearts on them,

  783. we build our

  784. lives around them.

  785. That's what we do

  786. according to

  787. verse 25.

  788. We take good

  789. things that God

  790. has made and

  791. we make them

  792. the ultimate

  793. thing.

  794. You see,

  795. because we are

  796. made by God,

  797. we are made

  798. to worship,

  799. we are worshipping

  800. beings,

  801. and we are made

  802. to worship

  803. something.

  804. And because,

  805. that's because how

  806. we are created,

  807. and we cannot

  808. eliminate

  809. treasuring Jesus,

  810. we cannot

  811. eliminate God

  812. out of our lives

  813. without creating

  814. God's substitutes.

  815. and every

  816. single one of

  817. us does it.

  818. They are the

  819. thing we look

  820. to for hope,

  821. for identity,

  822. for contentment,

  823. for satisfaction,

  824. for salvation,

  825. for joy.

  826. And they never

  827. give it to us.

  828. You see,

  829. all treasures,

  830. all idols,

  831. all inordinate

  832. desires shape

  833. our identity,

  834. they demand our

  835. allegiance,

  836. they capture our

  837. hearts,

  838. and we will give

  839. our attention to

  840. them,

  841. we will spend

  842. money on them.

  843. To grow in

  844. unity in Jesus,

  845. we need to grow

  846. in treasuring Jesus,

  847. but to grow in

  848. treasuring Jesus,

  849. we need to

  850. dislodge the

  851. other treasures

  852. that we have

  853. both individually

  854. and corporately

  855. as a church.

  856. Now,

  857. every one of us

  858. has treasures

  859. that we look to,

  860. and hopefully on

  861. your seat tonight,

  862. I just gave you

  863. a sheet.

  864. This is out of

  865. Tim Keller's

  866. Gospel in Life

  867. study book.

  868. Just,

  869. the whole book's

  870. worth the price

  871. of that sheet,

  872. but I encourage you

  873. to buy the book

  874. anyway.

  875. And he's also

  876. got a book

  877. called

  878. Counterfeit Gods,

  879. which also has

  880. a section on

  881. how to dislodge

  882. the idols of

  883. our hearts.

  884. What I encourage

  885. you to do,

  886. what I encourage

  887. the whole church

  888. to do this

  889. throughout the

  890. course of this

  891. week,

  892. is to go away

  893. and just reflect

  894. on this moment.

  895. What is it

  896. that's got the

  897. functional trust

  898. in my life?

  899. Let me tell you

  900. that I am so

  901. grateful for the

  902. leaders in this

  903. church,

  904. the people I get

  905. to work with.

  906. At the retreat

  907. in July,

  908. they were,

  909. they,

  910. and I know

  911. they love me

  912. and they graciously

  913. love me by telling

  914. me you were

  915. failing.

  916. They graciously

  917. pointed something

  918. out which they

  919. said,

  920. that thing in you

  921. Steve gets in

  922. the way of

  923. this church,

  924. this church's

  925. vision.

  926. It's the thing

  927. that's getting in

  928. the way.

  929. It was fantastic.

  930. It was hurt,

  931. obviously.

  932. Every prick

  933. hurts.

  934. I mean that in

  935. the pointy sense.

  936. And they,

  937. they love me

  938. enough to say

  939. to me that,

  940. Steve,

  941. even though we

  942. know you love

  943. the people of

  944. St. Paul's,

  945. it's not always

  946. evident.

  947. It's not always

  948. obvious.

  949. And they need

  950. to know it.

  951. They need to feel

  952. it.

  953. They need to know

  954. it.

  955. And I know

  956. enough about my

  957. heart to know

  958. that that there

  959. is tracking

  960. down to some

  961. idol in my

  962. heart that

  963. needs to be

  964. dislodged,

  965. that I might

  966. treasure Jesus,

  967. that I might

  968. love people

  969. more.

  970. And I'm

  971. grateful for

  972. them pointing

  973. it out,

  974. something I

  975. knew was

  976. true,

  977. but I'm

  978. grateful they

  979. pointed it

  980. out for me.

  981. Every sin

  982. has its

  983. foundation of

  984. something other

  985. than Jesus

  986. being the

  987. functional center

  988. and treasure

  989. of our heart.

  990. If you

  991. flip over on

  992. your sheet,

  993. or it

  994. depends on

  995. what side

  996. you're on,

  997. but there's

  998. a list of

  999. four things

  1000. there,

  1001. power,

  1002. approval,

  1003. comfort,

  1004. control.

  1005. The main

  1006. controlling

  1007. idol in my

  1008. heart is

  1009. control.

  1010. That's a

  1011. good thing

  1012. that God

  1013. has given.

  1014. I'm the

  1015. senior pastor

  1016. of this church

  1017. and so there

  1018. is an element

  1019. where I

  1020. ought to be

  1021. in control.

  1022. But when it

  1023. becomes the

  1024. main thing,

  1025. it's an

  1026. idol,

  1027. it dislodges

  1028. Jesus.

  1029. What I need

  1030. to see to

  1031. grow in

  1032. Jesus is to

  1033. repent where

  1034. I put something

  1035. else,

  1036. success for

  1037. St. Paul's

  1038. vision and

  1039. success as a

  1040. church or

  1041. whatever it is,

  1042. I put that as

  1043. a functional

  1044. thing in terms

  1045. of my identity

  1046. being wrapped

  1047. up in that,

  1048. a sense of

  1049. security wrapped

  1050. up in that,

  1051. a sense of

  1052. purpose being

  1053. wrapped up in

  1054. that,

  1055. and saying,

  1056. no,

  1057. Jesus control.

  1058. I need to

  1059. repent of that

  1060. idol and I

  1061. need to say,

  1062. thank you,

  1063. Jesus,

  1064. because you're

  1065. in control.

  1066. It's your

  1067. church.

  1068. You take that

  1069. idol away from

  1070. me because I've

  1071. got something

  1072. greater.

  1073. I've got Jesus

  1074. who is in

  1075. control of

  1076. his church.

  1077. He's Lord

  1078. of his

  1079. church.

  1080. And he's

  1081. got something

  1082. better.

  1083. My security

  1084. needs to be

  1085. wrapped up in

  1086. him, not in

  1087. this idol.

  1088. Becky Pippitt

  1089. writes in her

  1090. book, Out of

  1091. the Salt

  1092. Shaker,

  1093. whatever controls

  1094. us is our

  1095. Lord.

  1096. The person

  1097. who seeks

  1098. power is

  1099. controlled by

  1100. power.

  1101. The person

  1102. who seeks

  1103. acceptance is

  1104. controlled by

  1105. the people

  1106. they want to

  1107. please.

  1108. We do not

  1109. control ourselves.

  1110. We're controlled

  1111. by the Lord

  1112. of our life,

  1113. whatever that

  1114. is.

  1115. And I want

  1116. to be,

  1117. and I want

  1118. to keep calling

  1119. us to be

  1120. captivated by

  1121. the wonder and

  1122. more of the

  1123. Lord Jesus

  1124. Christ.

  1125. No lesser

  1126. treasures.

  1127. See, when we

  1128. treasure Jesus

  1129. above everything

  1130. else, every

  1131. other treasure

  1132. that leads to

  1133. factions and

  1134. frictions, we

  1135. put in their

  1136. proper place,

  1137. because that's

  1138. what they do.

  1139. These idols

  1140. lead to

  1141. frictions amongst

  1142. us.

  1143. Don't miss

  1144. the word joy

  1145. in this verse.

  1146. In his

  1147. joy, he

  1148. goes and

  1149. sells all that

  1150. he has and

  1151. buys the

  1152. field.

  1153. The loss of

  1154. all treasures

  1155. is not

  1156. sad when

  1157. we gain

  1158. Jesus.

  1159. It's not

  1160. sad when

  1161. we gain

  1162. Jesus.

  1163. And so

  1164. St. Paul's

  1165. friends, we

  1166. exist to know

  1167. Jesus, treasure

  1168. Jesus, and

  1169. represent Jesus

  1170. for God's

  1171. glory and

  1172. the joy of

  1173. all people.

  1174. That's who

  1175. we are, and

  1176. therefore, as a

  1177. result of that,

  1178. the consequence

  1179. is we are

  1180. united in our

  1181. desperation for

  1182. the world around

  1183. us to encounter

  1184. this Jesus, and

  1185. we are united

  1186. in our desire to

  1187. represent the

  1188. diversity of

  1189. Chatswood.

  1190. I want to

  1191. talk about

  1192. diversity next

  1193. week.
