  1. Well, let me add my good morning. My name is Sam. If I haven't had the chance to meet you yet,

  2. hopefully I will. As Jimmy has already expressed, we have just finished four weeks of soaking in

  3. our vision as a church and trying to get clear on where it is that God is leading us. And I get the

  4. joy of a little gap, a little breath for us before we launch all into the craziness and excitement

  5. that is Christmas. And so we're going to soak in Romans 8 for two weeks. And as I've started

  6. preparing this week, I kind of wish that we were soaking in Romans 8 for about 10 weeks,

  7. because there is a lot in there that is just incredibly life-giving. But we've got two,

  8. so we're going to try and make the most of it. So let me pray and ask that God would

  9. say the things that he needs to say so that we can get the life that he wants to put into us today.

  10. Father God, we thank you for gathering us. We thank you for your word. We thank you for the

  11. gift that we can open it, confident that we are loved by you because of Jesus. Please give us the

  12. ability to focus our hearts and minds now and to hear what it is you want to say. Amen.

  13. Now, in a room this size, I can fairly confidently say that there would be some people in this room

  14. who would identify as Christians. So you love Jesus. He's important to you. He's a big part of

  15. the way you make decisions about your life. He's fairly central. It's not a question for you. You're

  16. in. That's who you are. There would also be some people in this room who aren't sure where they

  17. stand. It could be that you kind of want to be in, but you're not really sure if you're in,

  18. or maybe you're not sure whether or not to take that final step to say, okay, I want to be a

  19. Christian. I want to make that part of who I am. And then as well as those two groups,

  20. there would be in a room this size some people who aren't Christians, who are confident that

  21. they're not Christians, who might even be confident that they don't want to be Christians. They don't

  22. want to follow Jesus. But there is something that all three groups would have in common.

  23. And that is the awkwardness around the gap between the things that Christians say

  24. and the lives that Christians live. If you're a Christian, it could be that that is a source of

  25. doubt for you. It could be your own gap between this is what I know Jesus says, and this is what

  26. I did this week, or the way I treated my mother, or the way I treated my boss, or the way I responded

  27. to the person who overtook me in traffic. You know the gap. And for you, if you're a Christian,

  28. it could be that that is a gap that makes you ask questions about just how real your faith in Jesus

  29. really is. If you're not sure if you're a Christian, this doubt, this guilt could be why you're not

  30. sure. You might have this nagging question of could God actually love someone like me when I'm so far

  31. away from the obvious and explicit standard that he gives. If you don't want to be a Christian,

  32. it could be because of all those Christian hypocrites who say one thing and don't deliver. Or maybe it's

  33. just too intimidating. Jesus sounds great, but to actually sign up to try and live what looks like

  34. an impossible standard. Gandhi expressed it when he used these words. He said,

  35. I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.

  36. Said from the outside, but it's not just outsiders throwing stones. Christian musician Brennan Manning

  37. said, the greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus

  38. with their lips and walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world

  39. simply finds unbelievable. If you've been a Christian for more than a few minutes, you know this tension.

  40. You know this struggle. It's not just the expectations that others have placed on you. It's your own

  41. expectations of what your life as a Christian would be like. You know it doesn't always line up.

  42. You know you fail. You know you make mistakes. You know that driving pressure of guilt to try harder,

  43. to serve more, to give more, to go to church more, that guilt that weighs us down and is sometimes even

  44. used as a motivator. I remember when I was growing up as a teenager, that was when I first started really

  45. engaging what Jesus was about. I would hear testimonies, so stories of how people had placed

  46. their trust in Jesus. And almost without exception, they could be summarised as,

  47. before I met Jesus I was bad, I met Jesus and now I'm good. Now I don't think it was malicious,

  48. but I would hear these stories time after time after time. And I mean, even apart from the pressure

  49. to have to be good, to measure up to this picture that was being painted,

  50. I was feeling pressure to go and develop a drug habit so that I had a decent bad as contrast to

  51. my good for afterwards. Like I thought my testimony is not legit unless there's some, you know, real

  52. light and shade in there. I've got to go and invest some time in my bad so that my good looks better,

  53. or maybe so that it lowers the bar of good. It can drag the whole thing this way and then maybe the

  54. pressure won't be so crushing. It seemed like it then as a teenager, and to be honest with you,

  55. sometimes it seems like it now. The thing that's apparently supposed to change when you become

  56. a Christian is your behaviour. That's supposed to be the obvious shift. Christians have a worldwide

  57. reputation for being hypocrites. And if we're honest, it's probably a fair criticism.

  58. But what does God say to the one who's unsure? What does God say to the one who is crushed by guilt

  59. and struggling? What does God say to the one who's pointing the finger at the Christian and calling

  60. them a hypocrite? Into the pressure to be good enough, into the fear of failure, and into the hurt

  61. and anger that comes from being hurt and mistreated by those who claim to follow Jesus,

  62. God says this. Romans 8 verse 1.

    Romans 8:1

  63. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  64. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. See, what changes when someone

  65. becomes a Christian, first and foremost, is not behaviour. It's verdict. You see, the line that's

  66. drawn when somebody starts following Jesus is not good to bad. It's, they are declared innocent.

  67. Condemnation is the thing that's removed. Christians are set free.

  68. But set free from what?

  69. Because the hypocrite charge comes because sometimes we say, and sometimes people hear,

  70. that what we've been set free from is the bad that we used to be. But it can't be that.

  71. It can't be that we've been set free from being bad because otherwise none of us can stay.

  72. That's not our experience. But even more than that, if we look back just a few verses into Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  73. which Rach read out for us when we were singing before, we've got the apostle Paul giving his testimony.

  74. And it's not a good, bad testimony. I mean, remember, this guy is possibly the greatest missionary

  75. the world has ever known, possibly the greatest church planter and pastor of all time.

  76. And listen to his frustration.

  77. That his heart's desire to obey God just doesn't line up with his day-to-day actions.

  78. And this is even for a guy that most of us would have looked up to when it comes to his godliness.

  79. Listen to his own words. He says, verse 15 of chapter 7,

  80. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.

  81. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

  82. As it is, it's no longer I myself who do it, but it's sin living in me.

  83. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.

  84. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

  85. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do, this I keep on doing.

  86. Now, if I do what I do not want to do, it's no longer I who do it, but it's sin living in me that does it.

  87. So I find this law at work.

  88. Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

  89. For in my inner being, I delight in God's law.

  90. But I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind, making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.

  91. What a wretched man I am.

  92. Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

  93. You can feel the burden that he is carrying.

  94. In his inner being, in his deepest desire, he wants to live for God.

  95. He wants to honour God with his actions, but he looks at his day.

  96. He looks at the things he's done and thought and said, and it's just not the same.

  97. Remember, this is a man who encountered Jesus dramatically.

  98. He met Jesus in a blinding light with an audible voice.

  99. There's no question for him about whether or not Jesus is real.

  100. His desire is legitimate.

  101. But day to day, his life is one of frustration and struggle, and he longs for rescue.

  102. But he finds it.

  103. Verse 25,

  104. In Jesus, there is deliverance.

  105. There is freedom.

  106. But that can't mean that he will no longer do these things that are frustrating him.

  107. Because having just thanked God for this freedom that he's found in Jesus,

  108. the very next thing he says, this is the verse before we get to chapter 8,

  109. the very next thing he says in verse 25, he says,

  110. Thanks be to God who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  111. Having been rescued,

  112. so then I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law,

  113. but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

  114. Having been rescued, there is still a battle going on for Paul daily.

  115. His desire and his actions still do not meet up in the way that he wants them to.

  116. He still lives the life in this tension of guilt and failure.

  117. Even though he wants to do what is right,

  118. his natural inclination is to go back to the way he used to live without Jesus,

  119. to live for himself.

  120. And if you're a Christian,

  121. you know this battle.

  122. It doesn't take a lot of self-reflection

  123. to recognize that we are not what we should be,

  124. not even what we want to be.

  125. You know the crushing guilt of failure,

  126. especially in light of all that God has done for us in Jesus.

  127. But you need to listen again to Romans 8.

  128. Therefore, there is now no condemnation

  129. for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  130. because through Christ Jesus,

  131. the law of the Spirit who gives life

  132. has set you free from the law of sin and death.

  133. For what the law was powerless to do,

  134. because it was weakened by the flesh,

  135. God did by sending his own Son

  136. in the likeness of sinful flesh

  137. to be a sin offering.

  138. And so he condemned sin in the flesh

  139. in order that the righteous requirement of the law

  140. might be fully met in us,

  141. who do not live according to the flesh,

  142. but according to the Spirit.

  143. You have been set free from condemnation

  144. if you are a Christian.

  145. There is no fear of retribution.

  146. There is no worrying that there will be

  147. some sort of payment you have to make.

  148. No penalty. Why?

  149. Because it says Jesus has taken your condemnation.

  150. He has taken your penalty and you are free.

  151. That's what you're free from.

  152. You are free from sitting there at the end of a day

  153. where you have had a fight with someone,

  154. where you know you have dishonored God,

  155. and feeling like somehow God is going to punish you

  156. for that one.

  157. Because it says there is no condemnation.

  158. It's gone. It's done.

  159. It's dealt with. It's exhausted.

  160. God sent Jesus in the likeness of sinful flesh.

  161. That's a really important phrase.

  162. It's telling us that Jesus was flesh.

  163. He was human.

  164. But the like bit is the sinful.

  165. He was human, but he wasn't sinful like us.

  166. Which means he was the sufficient substitute.

  167. God sent someone like us

  168. so that he could take our place.

  169. So that instead of sitting there covered in guilt,

  170. we can actually hand those things over to Jesus.

  171. That's what's going on in the cross.

  172. This is what it means to be a Christian.

  173. This is the measure of whether or not

  174. you are legitimately in.

  175. This is the thing you've got to choose on

  176. if you're unsure

  177. whether or not you're going to follow Jesus.

  178. When you become a Christian,

  179. Jesus takes your condemnation

  180. and sets you free.

  181. What changes is not your behavior.

  182. What changes is your verdict.

  183. What changes is what God sees

  184. when he looks at you.

  185. You are no longer somebody

  186. deserving of condemnation.

  187. That possibility is gone.

  188. What changes is the way that God sees you.

  189. You are set free from guilt

  190. and fear and shame forever.

  191. What makes a Christian a Christian

  192. is the freedom from condemnation.

  193. Freedom from punishment.

  194. But the fact is

  195. it's even more than a verdict change.

  196. It's more than just going from guilty to not guilty.

  197. It's an identity shift as well.

  198. It's not like, you know,

  199. the hammer's over your head

  200. and God just takes it away.

  201. It's more than that.

  202. He does at least that.

  203. But then there is an identity shift.

  204. Condemnation is removed

  205. but then it's replaced with something.

  206. Fear is removed

  207. but it's replaced with something.

  208. Instead of punishment

  209. God gives us his spirit.

  210. God gives us his life-giving power

  211. to strengthen us,

  212. to lead us,

  213. to comfort us.

  214. And then he says in verse 14

  215. those who have the spirit,

  216. those who are led by the spirit

  217. are children of God.

  218. You're not just no longer the naughty child.

  219. You're now his child.

  220. You're now adopted into the family.

  221. Verse 15,

  222. the spirit you receive

  223. does not make you slaves

  224. so that you live in fear again.

  225. It's not exchanging one fear

  226. for another fear.

  227. Rather,

  228. the spirit you receive

  229. brought about your adoption

  230. to sonship

  231. and by him we cry,

  232. Abba, Father.

  233. The spirit himself

  234. testifies with our spirit

  235. that we are God's children.

  236. Now,

  237. I just want to pause here

  238. for a second

  239. because I think

  240. the whole adoption metaphor

  241. has a different connotation

  242. in our context.

  243. I grew up as one of five kids

  244. and my oldest sister

  245. was adopted in our family.

  246. She was fostered

  247. from when she was three weeks old

  248. so I don't know life

  249. without her as my oldest sister.

  250. She's more part of our family

  251. than I am.

  252. But if I'm honest,

  253. there was the odd occasion

  254. where, you know,

  255. as siblings,

  256. we would give her a bit of stick

  257. about being adopted.

  258. Now, I'm not condoning this.

  259. You know,

  260. I've had to repent of this

  261. at some point

  262. and I'm thankful

  263. that there is no condemnation

  264. for this.

  265. But there was points

  266. where my oldest sister,

  267. Tally,

  268. would, you know,

  269. be a bit emotional

  270. or be a bit dramatic

  271. and we would let her know

  272. that the reason

  273. she was going through

  274. this situation

  275. was because she was adopted.

  276. Just to be clear,

  277. I love my sister.

  278. She's great.

  279. But what it does say

  280. is probably something

  281. that is true

  282. even if it's not spoken of us.

  283. There is a part of us

  284. that kind of looks at adoption

  285. as this concession.

  286. It's not quite the same

  287. as being, you know,

  288. born of the flesh,

  289. being a natural-born child.

  290. That's the way

  291. that we view it

  292. in our modern context.

  293. I mean, reality is in Australia

  294. it's almost impossible

  295. so we barely view it at all

  296. but the way we view it

  297. is we would never say that out loud

  298. but there's just this bit of us

  299. that does a double take.

  300. How do I treat you then

  301. if you're adopted?

  302. How do I refer to you?

  303. Is it my sister

  304. or is it my adopted sister?

  305. Is it my half-sister?

  306. Is it my step-sister?

  307. We think through these qualifiers

  308. to make it different

  309. but in the first century,

  310. adoption was nothing like that.

  311. adoption existed

  312. as a means for people

  313. to choose

  314. the child that they wanted

  315. to carry on their family.

  316. They would choose somebody

  317. who would be the inheritor

  318. of their estate.

  319. They would choose somebody

  320. who they wanted to be the one

  321. that would bear their name

  322. going forward.

  323. It's a privilege.

  324. It almost needs to be escalated

  325. like everybody else needs

  326. a little prefix

  327. to brother and sister

  328. because adopted was chosen.

  329. God adopted us.

  330. That means God chose us.

  331. That means that it's not just

  332. are you not in trouble anymore?

  333. God has chosen you

  334. and drawn you into his family

  335. so that you might inherit from him.

  336. It's verse 17.

  337. We're now heirs of God

  338. and co-heirs with Christ.

  339. Not just condemnation gone.

  340. Condemnation is gone

  341. but now in the place of condemnation

  342. is all the promises of God.

  343. The promises of eternal life.

  344. The promise of forgiveness.

  345. The promise of access.

  346. The promise of eternal love

  347. and fellowship.

  348. The promise of everything good.

  349. God has exhausted condemnation.

  350. He's poured it all out on Jesus

  351. as our sin substitute

  352. and instead we have been drawn

  353. into his family.

  354. And all of that

  355. for a bunch of people

  356. who still make mistakes

  357. who will continue to make mistakes

  358. at least until they die

  359. or Jesus comes back.

  360. Sure one day Christians

  361. will be made perfect

  362. but it won't be this side of heaven.

  363. We're going to talk about that

  364. a little bit more next week.

  365. But until then

  366. what you see is what you get.

  367. Christians are

  368. and will be

  369. imperfect.

  370. So if you're a Christian

  371. you need to hear

  372. and believe these words.

  373. There is now

  374. no condemnation

  375. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  376. If you're sitting in this room

  377. and you're unsure

  378. whether or not you're in

  379. whether or not you want to be in

  380. you need to hear

  381. that if you follow Jesus

  382. the first thing he will do

  383. is remove the possibility

  384. of condemnation.

  385. He will never let you go.

  386. He will offer you peace

  387. in his unconditional

  388. and irreversible love.

  389. So does that mean

  390. that God doesn't care

  391. what we do?

  392. Does that mean

  393. behaviour is irrelevant?

  394. It's unimportant?

  395. Does that mean

  396. that Christians

  397. should be comfortable

  398. with the title hypocrite?

  399. At least I'm a forgiven hypocrite.

  400. Look back at verse 3.

  401. What the law was powerless to do

  402. because it was weakened

  403. by the flesh

  404. so the law wasn't

  405. wasn't capable

  406. of enabling us

  407. to be good enough for God.

  408. But the problem wasn't the law

  409. it was weakened by the flesh

  410. it was weakened by you and me.

  411. The issue was the way

  412. that we approach the law

  413. as this oppressive force.

  414. But what the law was powerless to do

  415. because it was weakened

  416. by the flesh

  417. God did

  418. by sending his own son

  419. in the likeness of sinful flesh

  420. to be a sin offering

  421. and so he condemned

  422. sin in the flesh.

  423. Here's the key bit.

  424. Verse 4.

  425. Why did he do that?

  426. Why did he take away condemnation?

  427. What was the point?

  428. Was it just so that we could

  429. dance around and go

  430. hey I can't get in trouble?

  431. Verse 4.

  432. In order that

  433. the righteous requirement

  434. of the law

  435. might be fully met

  436. in us

  437. who do not live

  438. according to the flesh

  439. but according to the spirit.

  440. In order that

  441. that's why Jesus died.

  442. That's why God

  443. takes away condemnation.

  444. So that we don't walk

  445. through life

  446. feeling crushed

  447. by expectation

  448. and guilt.

  449. Jesus died in your place

  450. and set you free

  451. so that

  452. you could start

  453. the process of change.

  454. So that with the verdict

  455. already decided

  456. so that with the punishment

  457. possibility gone

  458. with the security

  459. of being a child of God

  460. you could then

  461. begin the process

  462. of growing

  463. in your holiness.

  464. Now I've been struggling

  465. all week to figure out

  466. how to articulate

  467. what I feel

  468. when I say that.

  469. Because it feels

  470. like attention

  471. doesn't it?

  472. Hey there's no condemnation.

  473. Jesus has died

  474. so you can be forgiven

  475. regardless of what you've done

  476. or will do.

  477. And nothing you can do

  478. can undo

  479. what Jesus has done.

  480. But hey by the way

  481. the whole point

  482. was so that you would

  483. start doing some stuff.

  484. So that you would change.

  485. So that you would be

  486. a little bit different.

  487. I mean

  488. isn't that like

  489. an irreconcilable tension?

  490. Doesn't it sound strange

  491. to be completely free

  492. with conditions?

  493. It feels like

  494. an oxymoron.

  495. The best word

  496. that I can give for this

  497. I was going to say

  498. it's kind of

  499. an apparent tension

  500. a perceived tension

  501. but I think what it is

  502. is it's an experienced

  503. tension.

  504. Because we do experience this.

  505. We know that God

  506. has died for us.

  507. We know that forgiveness

  508. is in Him alone

  509. and yet

  510. even knowing that

  511. we experience the guilt

  512. of maybe wandering

  513. too far in one direction

  514. and holding these things apart.

  515. So I'm either forgiven

  516. or I'm guilty

  517. and I need to try harder.

  518. We really struggle

  519. to hold those things together

  520. but Paul

  521. writes them

  522. in this chapter

  523. which is

  524. designed

  525. to make you feel secure

  526. as a follower of Jesus.

  527. Every verse in this chapter

  528. is supposed to feed you

  529. and make you walk out of here

  530. feeling invincible

  531. because God's love for you

  532. cannot be taken.

  533. Because His power

  534. dwells in you

  535. because no failure

  536. no opposition

  537. nothing can stop you

  538. from God's good plan.

  539. And in the middle of that

  540. with a straight face

  541. He says

  542. you need to become

  543. more like Jesus.

  544. He puts a standard in there.

  545. So He doesn't see it

  546. as a tension

  547. and yet we experience it

  548. that way.

  549. And the reason is

  550. I believe

  551. because the issue

  552. isn't with the rules

  553. themselves.

  554. The issue isn't

  555. with the command

  556. to love your enemy

  557. or to love your neighbour

  558. or to honour your parents.

  559. The issue

  560. is that the laws

  561. and the rules

  562. and the standards

  563. which are good

  564. feel oppressive

  565. because we never

  566. ever meet them.

  567. Because we hold them up

  568. as a means

  569. by which we might

  570. somehow please God

  571. or make Him happy

  572. they become something

  573. that has power over us.

  574. which means

  575. we've heard forgiveness

  576. but we haven't understood

  577. what we've been freed from.

  578. That's what it says

  579. at the beginning

  580. of chapter 8

  581. we've been freed

  582. from the power

  583. of the law.

  584. The power of the law

  585. is that it can crush us

  586. with guilt

  587. and oppression.

  588. The power of the law

  589. is that

  590. it can hold us captive

  591. but can't actually

  592. deliver the thing

  593. that we want

  594. to please the God

  595. who made us.

  596. See the reason

  597. this is an experience

  598. tension

  599. is because

  600. we look at the law

  601. as if it still

  602. has power

  603. without understanding

  604. that what Jesus

  605. does on the cross

  606. as well as remove

  607. penalty

  608. as well as

  609. draw us into

  610. His family

  611. is transform

  612. the law

  613. into what it's

  614. always supposed to be

  615. a good gift

  616. from God

  617. to show us

  618. what it looks like

  619. to walk the life

  620. that He designed.

  621. It goes from being

  622. this oppressive

  623. bar that we have

  624. to meet

  625. to being a map

  626. to guide us

  627. through life.

  628. Augustine

  629. articulates it

  630. very helpfully

  631. he says

  632. law was given

  633. that grace

  634. might be sought

  635. grace was given

  636. that law

  637. might be fulfilled

  638. the law

  639. was never

  640. going to deliver

  641. but it drives us

  642. to Jesus

  643. who does

  644. and Jesus

  645. takes us

  646. back to the law

  647. to show us

  648. what it was

  649. always supposed

  650. to do anyway

  651. to lead us

  652. to show us

  653. that there is

  654. blessing

  655. in loving

  656. your enemy

  657. that God

  658. will bless you

  659. as you seek

  660. to obey Him

  661. and do things

  662. the way

  663. that He designed.

  664. Now a life

  665. that lines up

  666. with God's law

  667. is not the means

  668. by which you

  669. become a Christian

  670. it's not even

  671. the measure

  672. of whether or not

  673. your Christian faith

  674. is genuine

  675. but it is

  676. what it looks

  677. like

  678. to live

  679. as somebody

  680. who's been

  681. freed.

  682. That's why

  683. it says

  684. in verse 12

  685. therefore

  686. brothers and

  687. sisters

  688. we have an

  689. obligation

  690. okay we're

  691. free

  692. but brothers

  693. and sisters

  694. we have an

  695. obligation

  696. but it's not

  697. to the flesh

  698. to live

  699. according to it

  700. the flesh

  701. is death

  702. the flesh

  703. delivered

  704. nothing for us

  705. the flesh

  706. is that guilt

  707. and oppression

  708. for if you

  709. live according

  710. to the flesh

  711. you will die

  712. but if by the

  713. spirit

  714. you put to death

  715. the misdeeds

  716. of the body

  717. you will live

  718. the obligation

  719. of the Christian

  720. is to live

  721. free

  722. you can't

  723. accept freedom

  724. from God

  725. and then put

  726. the shackles

  727. back on

  728. that's rejecting

  729. freedom

  730. you can't

  731. hold them

  732. together

  733. the obligation

  734. we have

  735. is to

  736. recognize

  737. that what

  738. Jesus

  739. has done

  740. is released

  741. us

  742. to begin

  743. obeying

  744. those laws

  745. not as

  746. oppression

  747. but as

  748. encouragement

  749. as opportunity

  750. it's no longer

  751. a weight

  752. to be carried

  753. it is a torch

  754. to guide

  755. the way

  756. because the

  757. reality is

  758. before Jesus

  759. there wasn't

  760. even the

  761. possibility

  762. of obedience

  763. that's what

  764. makes the

  765. rules and

  766. laws so

  767. oppressive

  768. verse 7

  769. says

  770. the mind

  771. governed by

  772. the flesh

  773. is hostile

  774. to God

  775. this is the

  776. life before

  777. we know

  778. Jesus

  779. it does not

  780. submit to

  781. God's law

  782. nor can it

  783. do so

  784. those who

  785. are in the

  786. realm of

  787. the flesh

  788. cannot

  789. please

  790. God

  791. without

  792. Jesus

  793. the word

  794. that hangs

  795. over our

  796. life

  797. that summarizes

  798. everything we

  799. do

  800. even the

  801. apparently

  802. good things

  803. is death

  804. we are

  805. incapable of

  806. ever pleasing

  807. our creator

  808. in our own

  809. strength

  810. but having

  811. removed

  812. condemnation

  813. he gives us

  814. his spirit

  815. that we might

  816. know the

  817. blessing of

  818. walking the

  819. path that he

  820. designed for

  821. us

  822. that we

  823. might understand

  824. what he

  825. meant when

  826. Jesus said

  827. I've come

  828. that you

  829. might have

  830. life and

  831. have it to

  832. the full

  833. now the

  834. struggle with

  835. sin is going

  836. to continue

  837. as long as

  838. with this

  839. side of

  840. heaven it's

  841. still going

  842. to be

  843. reality

  844. verse 10

  845. he says

  846. it again

  847. he says

  848. if Christ

  849. is in

  850. you

  851. even though

  852. your body

  853. is subject

  854. to death

  855. because of

  856. sin

  857. that is

  858. it's still

  859. around

  860. you're still

  861. dealing with

  862. the pain

  863. and consequences

  864. of your

  865. own

  866. disobedience

  867. and stupidity

  868. in that

  869. context

  870. the spirit

  871. gives life

  872. because of

  873. righteousness

  874. the war

  875. will continue

  876. to wage

  877. but it's

  878. a battle

  879. that's

  880. already

  881. won

  882. because

  883. verse 11

  884. if the

  885. spirit of

  886. him who

  887. raised

  888. Jesus

  889. from the

  890. dead

  891. is living

  892. in you

  893. he who

  894. raised

  895. Christ

  896. from the

  897. dead

  898. will also

  899. give life

  900. to your

  901. mortal

  902. bodies

  903. because

  904. of his

  905. spirit

  906. who lives

  907. in you

  908. the power

  909. of sin

  910. and failure

  911. its power

  912. to condemn

  913. us

  914. both within

  915. our conscience

  916. and before

  917. God

  918. is nothing

  919. compared

  920. to the

  921. power

  922. of the

  923. Holy

  924. Spirit

  925. that

  926. raised

  927. Jesus

  928. from

  929. the

  930. dead

  931. the

  932. same

  933. Holy

  934. Spirit

  935. that's

  936. now

  937. living

  938. in us

  939. empowering

  940. us

  941. to

  942. progressively

  943. win

  944. the battle

  945. against

  946. sin

  947. it's

  948. not

  949. that you

  950. become

  951. a

  952. Christian

  953. here

  954. and your

  955. holiness

  956. level

  957. is here

  958. and then

  959. you're

  960. going to

  961. be on

  962. a pretty

  963. straight

  964. 45 degree

  965. angle

  966. until one

  967. day you

  968. hit

  969. perfection

  970. that'd

  971. be nice

  972. because at

  973. least you

  974. could chart

  975. your progress

  976. you might

  977. have moments

  978. like this

  979. and flatline

  980. you might

  981. win

  982. your struggle

  983. against sin

  984. and then

  985. lose

  986. and then

  987. win

  988. and then

  989. win

  990. and then

  991. lose

  992. and then

  993. lose

  994. and then

  995. win

  996. and then

  997. it's not

  998. a clean

  999. line like

  1000. that

  1001. but however

  1002. the line

  1003. goes

  1004. the possibility

  1005. of condemnation

  1006. is gone

  1007. the power

  1008. of sin

  1009. when you

  1010. lose

  1011. to drag

  1012. you deeper

  1013. and further

  1014. and to

  1015. create doubt

  1016. is gone

  1017. because however

  1018. your line

  1019. goes

  1020. it will

  1021. end up

  1022. in the

  1023. same

  1024. place

  1025. as

  1026. everybody

  1027. who

  1028. trusts

  1029. Jesus

  1030. verse 29

  1031. says

  1032. those God

  1033. foreknew

  1034. he also

  1035. predestined

  1036. to be

  1037. conformed

  1038. to the

  1039. image

  1040. of his

  1041. son

  1042. God's

  1043. doing

  1044. the work

  1045. and then

  1046. verse 30

  1047. those he

  1048. predestined

  1049. he called

  1050. those he

  1051. called

  1052. he justified

  1053. that's the

  1054. condemnation

  1055. removed

  1056. and those

  1057. he justified

  1058. he glorified

  1059. that's heaven

  1060. it's

  1061. inevitable

  1062. because the

  1063. condemnation

  1064. is gone

  1065. the end

  1066. point of

  1067. your life

  1068. is heaven

  1069. if you

  1070. trust in

  1071. Jesus

  1072. there is

  1073. no tension

  1074. between

  1075. God's grace

  1076. to us

  1077. and our

  1078. obligation

  1079. in this

  1080. passage

  1081. this chapter

  1082. is assuring

  1083. us

  1084. it's building

  1085. our confidence

  1086. in what God

  1087. has done

  1088. so that when

  1089. we fail

  1090. when we

  1091. struggle

  1092. there will

  1093. be peace

  1094. that we

  1095. might

  1096. continue

  1097. and that

  1098. peace is

  1099. found

  1100. in living

  1101. by his

  1102. spirit

  1103. living by

  1104. the spirit

  1105. is not

  1106. perfect

  1107. living

  1108. but it

  1109. is active

  1110. living

  1111. look at

  1112. verse 12

  1113. this is where

  1114. I want to

  1115. finish

  1116. therefore

  1117. brothers and

  1118. sisters

  1119. we have

  1120. an obligation

  1121. but it's

  1122. not to the

  1123. flesh to

  1124. live according

  1125. to it

  1126. for if you

  1127. live according

  1128. to the flesh

  1129. you will

  1130. die

  1131. but

  1132. this is what

  1133. it looks

  1134. like

  1135. but if

  1136. by the

  1137. spirit

  1138. you put

  1139. to death

  1140. the misdeeds

  1141. of the

  1142. body

  1143. you will

  1144. live

  1145. put to

  1146. death

  1147. the misdeeds

  1148. of your

  1149. body

  1150. that's

  1151. fairly

  1152. serious

  1153. language

  1154. you don't

  1155. tend to

  1156. kill anything

  1157. through

  1158. being passive

  1159. actively

  1160. fighting with

  1161. and killing

  1162. sin in your

  1163. life

  1164. actively

  1165. resisting

  1166. the things

  1167. that try

  1168. and drag

  1169. you away

  1170. from what

  1171. Christ

  1172. has done

  1173. for you

  1174. this is

  1175. not competing

  1176. with verse 1

  1177. no condemnation

  1178. and put to

  1179. death

  1180. sit next

  1181. to each

  1182. other

  1183. how do

  1184. we know

  1185. the deep

  1186. confidence

  1187. of being

  1188. loved by

  1189. God

  1190. through

  1191. Jesus

  1192. death

  1193. and

  1194. resurrection

  1195. how can

  1196. that verse

  1197. there is

  1198. no condemnation

  1199. be imprinted

  1200. on us

  1201. so deeply

  1202. that we

  1203. might never

  1204. forget

  1205. that truth

  1206. by putting

  1207. to death

  1208. the misdeeds

  1209. of the body

  1210. by living

  1211. according to

  1212. the spirit

  1213. and if that's

  1214. the key

  1215. what does

  1216. that look

  1217. like

  1218. for you

  1219. how do

  1220. you do

  1221. it

  1222. how do

  1223. you kill

  1224. sin

  1225. verse 2

  1226. through

  1227. Christ

  1228. Jesus

  1229. the law

  1230. of the

  1231. spirit

  1232. who gives

  1233. life

  1234. has set

  1235. you free

  1236. from the

  1237. law of

  1238. sin

  1239. and death

  1240. for what

  1241. the law

  1242. was powerless

  1243. to do

  1244. because it

  1245. was weakened

  1246. by the

  1247. flesh

  1248. God

  1249. did

  1250. by sending

  1251. his own

  1252. son

  1253. in the

  1254. likeness

  1255. of sinful

  1256. flesh

  1257. to be a

  1258. sin

  1259. offering

  1260. and so

  1261. he condemned

  1262. sin

  1263. in the

  1264. flesh

  1265. Jesus

  1266. is the

  1267. one

  1268. who

  1269. kills

  1270. sin

  1271. it's not

  1272. something

  1273. you have

  1274. to do

  1275. he empties

  1276. of it

  1277. of its

  1278. power

  1279. he condemns

  1280. it

  1281. he puts

  1282. it on

  1283. the cross

  1284. and leaves

  1285. it behind

  1286. in the

  1287. grave

  1288. we must

  1289. stop

  1290. trying to

  1291. do this

  1292. on our

  1293. own

  1294. the

  1295. greatest

  1296. source

  1297. of guilt

  1298. for the

  1299. Christian

  1300. the greatest

  1301. source

  1302. of

  1303. discouragement

  1304. for somebody

  1305. who's trying

  1306. to follow

  1307. Jesus

  1308. is trying

  1309. to do

  1310. what God

  1311. doesn't ask

  1312. you to

  1313. do

  1314. if you

  1315. want to

  1316. kill

  1317. your

  1318. sin

  1319. if you

  1320. want to

  1321. put it

  1322. to death

  1323. if you

  1324. want to

  1325. stop

  1326. being

  1327. controlled

  1328. by it

  1329. then hand

  1330. it over

  1331. to Jesus

  1332. because he

  1333. condemns it

  1334. in the

  1335. cross

  1336. he defeats

  1337. it

  1338. he destroys

  1339. it

  1340. confess it

  1341. to him

  1342. specifically

  1343. explicitly

  1344. don't hold

  1345. on to it

  1346. don't

  1347. don't try

  1348. and improve

  1349. a little

  1350. bit

  1351. before you

  1352. lay it

  1353. bare

  1354. before him

  1355. don't be

  1356. like oh

  1357. hey God

  1358. I was being

  1359. really greedy

  1360. with my

  1361. money a few

  1362. months ago

  1363. I'm in a

  1364. slightly better

  1365. place

  1366. please forgive

  1367. me for that

  1368. greed

  1369. before

  1370. you don't

  1371. mean it

  1372. you mean

  1373. look at how

  1374. well I did

  1375. God

  1376. you're trying

  1377. to kill

  1378. it yourself

  1379. don't hold

  1380. on to it

  1381. hand it

  1382. over

  1383. confess it

  1384. to him

  1385. to the

  1386. one place

  1387. where it

  1388. can be

  1389. killed

  1390. the cross

  1391. of your

  1392. saviour

  1393. Jesus

  1394. because as

  1395. a child

  1396. of God

  1397. no matter

  1398. how many

  1399. times you

  1400. come to

  1401. Jesus

  1402. with sin

  1403. that you

  1404. need to

  1405. confess

  1406. no matter

  1407. how many

  1408. times you

  1409. fail

  1410. you will

  1411. always be

  1412. welcomed

  1413. as a

  1414. child

  1415. no matter

  1416. how many

  1417. times you

  1418. come to

  1419. him

  1420. in

  1421. inadequacy

  1422. and

  1423. weakness

  1424. there is

  1425. no

  1426. condemnation

  1427. for you

  1428. when you

  1429. confess

  1430. and hand

  1431. your sin

  1432. and failure

  1433. to Jesus

  1434. you will

  1435. always find

  1436. grace

  1437. always find

  1438. forgiveness

  1439. and as

  1440. Romans 8

  1441. promises

  1442. in him

  1443. there you

  1444. will find

  1445. life

  1446. and peace

  1447. right now

  1448. we're going to

  1449. share in the

  1450. Lord's Supper

  1451. together

  1452. the whole

  1453. point of

  1454. this meal

  1455. is Romans 8

  1456. it's for

  1457. us to

  1458. remember

  1459. that

  1460. because

  1461. of

  1462. Jesus

  1463. life

  1464. and

  1465. death

  1466. there's

  1467. no

  1468. condemnation

  1469. for those

  1470. who

  1471. trust

  1472. in

  1473. him

  1474. it's

  1475. an

  1476. opportunity

  1477. for us

  1478. to put

  1479. to death

  1480. sin

  1481. right now

  1482. as we

  1483. eat

  1484. and drink

  1485. for us

  1486. to

  1487. specifically

  1488. and explicitly

  1489. hand to

  1490. God

  1491. the things

  1492. we know

  1493. are not in

  1494. line with

  1495. those who

  1496. claim to

  1497. follow him

  1498. hand them

  1499. over

  1500. and watch

  1501. him put

  1502. them to

  1503. death

  1504. as these

  1505. elements come

  1506. around I

  1507. want you to

  1508. hold on to

  1509. them so

  1510. that we

  1511. can eat

  1512. and drink

  1513. together

  1514. but as

  1515. they're

  1516. coming

  1517. around

  1518. prepare

  1519. yourself

  1520. to hand

  1521. over

  1522. whatever it

  1523. is that

  1524. you need

  1525. to hand

  1526. over

  1527. is there a

  1528. sin that

  1529. you've been

  1530. carrying

  1531. yourself

  1532. maybe a

  1533. really deep

  1534. one that

  1535. you've been

  1536. keeping secret

  1537. is there a

  1538. weight of

  1539. guilt that is

  1540. driving you

  1541. right now that

  1542. you need to

  1543. let go of

  1544. is there a

  1545. fear of

  1546. judgment

  1547. get ready

  1548. to hand

  1549. them over

  1550. to the

  1551. one who

  1552. loves

  1553. unconditionally

  1554. and then

  1555. once everybody's

  1556. got the

  1557. elements we're

  1558. going to eat

  1559. and drink

  1560. and celebrate

  1561. together

  1562. all

  1563. how to

  1564. forget

  1565. what

  1566. you

  1567. have

  1568. to

  1569. hold on

  1570. and

  1571. have

  1572. what

  1573. you

  1574. have

  1575. to

  1576. give

  1577. time

  1578. and

  1579. give

  1580. a

  1581. speech

  1582. and

  1583. give

  1584. them

  1585. and

  1586. if

  1587. you

  1588. have

  1589. them

  1590. have

  1591. to

  1592. invite

  1593. them

  1594. to

  1595. franchise

  1596. and

  1597. offer

  1598. them

  1599. is
