  1. And before he knew it, this guy was pinned to the ground.

  2. The bear had its paw on his chest and its other paw up ready to strike him.

  3. And in that moment, this atheist just screamed out,

  4. Oh, God, help me!

  5. And then the bear was momentarily startled,

  6. and the atheist sort of realized the inconsistency of calling out to God for help

  7. after living a life that acknowledging God doesn't exist

  8. and then calling him, he needs help.

  9. And then so he throws out an ultimatum instead to God and says,

  10. Well, in fact, I don't believe you exist, buddy.

  11. In fact, I don't care if you do.

  12. But if you do, then prove yourself that you're good and that you're powerful,

  13. as people say you are, and make this bear a Christian.

  14. He figured that that's a pretty smart move.

  15. He can then, the bear won't kill him because the bear has to, you know,

  16. turn the other cheek and look and not kill him.

  17. And he'd be able to go on living on like he always has for the rest of his life,

  18. not acknowledging God.

  19. So he figured that was a bit of a stroke of brilliance there in just that moment.

  20. And to his great surprise, in that very moment,

  21. the bear pulled back and knelt down beside him,

  22. took his paw off his chest and put his paws together

  23. and bowed his head and started to pray.

  24. And he prayed, Dear Father, for what I'm about to receive,

  25. may the Lord make me truly thankful.

  26. I don't think it's a true story.

  27. I'm pretty convinced prayers don't pray,

  28. but it's pretty much universal that people on our planet pray.

  29. It doesn't matter who the person is.

  30. You see them on the television.

  31. I've even seen declared atheists in a moment of tragedy get on the TV

  32. being interviewed about something, about some tragedy that's happened,

  33. and they've said our thoughts and our prayers are with the family.

  34. I mean, you hear that again, you hear it again and again and again.

  35. Even devout atheists have said our thoughts and our prayers.

  36. I'm not sure exactly what they mean by prayers at that point,

  37. but that is the thing, is that prayer is virtually universal activity.

  38. But what we mean by it, what the atheist means by it on that moment of the TV,

  39. is very different than what I would mean by it.

  40. Individual to individual, what we actually mean by prayer is very different.

  41. And what is significant is that the difference between our prayers

  42. is the difference between what we think about the being to whom we're praying to is,

  43. what sort of being that is, what sort of God they are,

  44. what we think about that God, and also what our relationship with that God

  45. or that supreme being is.

  46. You see, when the Buddhist spins his prayer wheel,

  47. or when the Hindu sits in mystic silence,

  48. or when the Muslim gets his prayer mat and faces Mecca five times a day and prays,

  49. they are all reflecting in their own different ways

  50. the character of the God or the gods to whom they're praying to,

  51. and also the relationship and how they think the relationship works with that God.

  52. So our prayer is shaped and defined by the being to whom we pray,

  53. and that's no different for the Christian.

  54. There are many Bible passages that shape the Christian prayer life.

  55. For instance, Jeremiah 32, 17,

  56. That verse shapes the way you pray.

  57. It's talking about God being the creator of all things,

  58. and nothing is too hard for Him.

  59. That's a shaping prayer.

  60. That's a verse that shapes our prayer, view of God.

  61. Or our relationship with God.

  62. For instance, the stunning picture of the Christian life

  63. that's laid out before us in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  64. where it says,

  65. We once were slaves to sin and death and fear.

  66. We were hostile to God, unable to please Him at all.

  67. We are now free sons of the Father,

  68. co-heirs of His kingdom in Christ.

  69. Through being united with Jesus,

  70. who died to free us,

  71. we now have this new life in which God Himself dwells with us,

  72. in us, by His Spirit.

  73. It's because of the saving work of Jesus

  74. that we are raised up from our low position,

  75. which is the position of being cut off from access to God,

  76. and have been granted free access

  77. to the almighty, true, living God,

  78. creator and sustainer of all that is.

  79. And so what that means for the Christian

  80. is that prayer is not an appendix.

  81. It's not an addition to the Christian life.

  82. It's the heart of who we are as His children

  83. and how we relate to Him and His Father.

  84. In fact, I would go one step further.

  85. I didn't say this this morning,

  86. but I think you can think about it today.

  87. I would suggest that prayer is one of the barometers,

  88. if not the key barometer,

  89. to indicate what your spiritual state is.

  90. Prayer is the outworking of your relationship with God

  91. in the same way that if I've got no communication

  92. with my wife, Natalie,

  93. that would be an indication of the state of our relationship.

  94. Don't care whatever,

  95. don't care how much money I spend on holidays

  96. or whether I buy a clothes or anything like that.

  97. It's how do I communicate with her

  98. as a fair indication of what my relationship status is with her

  99. in the same way it is with God.

  100. And what we see as a Christian

  101. is that prayer is a privilege.

  102. To be able to go to the creator and sustainer of the universe

  103. and to call Him Father.

  104. And yet with all the privileges that prayer affords us,

  105. I think the hard truth is that many of us

  106. don't pray very much.

  107. We pray at meals, possibly.

  108. We whisper prayers before tough meetings.

  109. We say something brief as we crawl into bed.

  110. And I suspect that very few set aside times to pray alone

  111. and even fewer think that it's worthy to meet with others to pray.

  112. I would suggest that our lack of prayerlessness

  113. is one of the reasons,

  114. one of the chief reasons why our faith is weak,

  115. our hope is feeble,

  116. and our passion for Christ is small.

  117. And so what I want to do today

  118. is I want to turn our attention to Jesus

  119. to be enthused by prayer from Him.

  120. We see Jesus at the beginning of Luke 11.

  121. He is praying.

  122. And there are at least four things

  123. that Jesus teaches us here

  124. about prayer in these verses.

  125. And I want these things to shape the way we're thinking

  126. as we begin a new ministry year here at St. Paul's,

  127. that for these things to shape our prayer life at St. Paul's.

  128. So firstly, Jesus teaches us

  129. to make our praying God-centered.

  130. You see, when the disciples come to Jesus

  131. to ask Jesus to teach them how to pray,

  132. as they do in verse 1 of chapter 11,

  133. He says in verse 2,

  134. Now the Lord's Prayer is a prayer

  135. for us to model our prayer on

  136. rather than a prayer

  137. that we are to pray with repetition.

  138. I think it's somewhat ironic

  139. that Jesus, in the same context

  140. of giving us the Lord's Prayer,

  141. He says don't keep babbling on as the pagans do.

  142. That's what He does in Matthew.

  143. And yet ever since He's given us the Lord's Prayer,

  144. we've babbled it on consistently ever since then.

  145. It's not a prayer

  146. that we're meant to pray with repetition.

  147. It's meant to be a model for prayer.

  148. That's what the disciples are asking of Jesus here.

  149. And of particular note is that Jesus says,

  150. our first desire, our first request

  151. should be that God's name be hallowed or glorified,

  152. that His kingdom be advanced and come.

  153. And that's what I mean by God-centered prayer.

  154. The glory of God's name,

  155. the advancement of God's kingdom

  156. are the primary concerns of prayer.

  157. And if that's foreign to you,

  158. if you never plead for the name of God

  159. to be holy in the way that you live,

  160. for Him to be seen as holy in the way that you live,

  161. or the kingdom of God to come in such a way

  162. that you want to totally surrender to Him,

  163. then don't be content.

  164. Let me say, as you look forward into this year,

  165. do not be content to stay stuck at that level of praying.

  166. Make the glory of God the center of your prayers.

  167. That's why we exist as a church.

  168. We exist to know Jesus, treasure Jesus,

  169. represent Jesus for God's glory

  170. and the joy of all people.

  171. So pray again and again

  172. in as many different words as you can possibly think of

  173. and phrases you can come up with.

  174. Father, let your name be seen as holy in my life.

  175. Your will be done.

  176. Your kingdom come.

  177. Your rule be established over my life.

  178. In all things, that's what you're praying.

  179. So secondly, Jesus teaches us to pray with a sense of security

  180. in the Father's love.

  181. Jesus doesn't want us to feel precarious or insecure in our prayers.

  182. And He shows this mainly by teaching us to call God Father

  183. when we pray to Him.

  184. The prayer in verse 2 begins simply,

  185. Father.

  186. And then in verses 11 to 13,

  187. He unpacks for us some of the security

  188. which is implied by the word Father.

  189. This is a great promise to encourage us in our praying.

  190. It says,

  191. Which of you fathers,

  192. if your son asks for a fish,

  193. will give him a snake instead?

  194. Or if he asks for an egg,

  195. will give him a scorpion?

  196. If you then, though you are evil,

  197. there's Jesus' assessment of me as a father,

  198. if you then, though you are evil,

  199. know how to give good gifts to your children,

  200. how much more will your Father in heaven

  201. give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?

  202. The words,

  203. how much more there,

  204. mean something utterly, utterly important for us.

  205. They mean that God is much more inclined

  206. to hear me

  207. and help me

  208. when I pray that I am willing to hear

  209. and help my girls

  210. when they ask for my help.

  211. I find that

  212. so, so astonishing.

  213. So, so astonishing.

  214. You know,

  215. if my girls are asking for help,

  216. they're in need,

  217. I will do whatever I can

  218. to assist them at that point.

  219. You know,

  220. one of them got dumped in the beach,

  221. you know,

  222. we're on holidays,

  223. came up,

  224. as you do,

  225. and I,

  226. I didn't sit there going,

  227. yeah,

  228. they'll be right.

  229. They'll work it out.

  230. I've got other things to do.

  231. And,

  232. and,

  233. and,

  234. and what it's saying here is that

  235. the God is much more inclined

  236. to hear and help me

  237. than I am to take those extra steps

  238. to help my daughter

  239. who's gasping for breath.

  240. Why does Jesus mention this?

  241. I think He wants us to feel

  242. secure in the Father's love

  243. when we come to Him in prayer.

  244. He doesn't want us to feel precarious.

  245. He doesn't want us to feel unsure

  246. of our acceptance.

  247. He doesn't want us to feel fearful

  248. that we will find Him

  249. out of sorts with us

  250. or that He will find us,

  251. that we'll find Him

  252. unconcerned about us.

  253. This sense of security

  254. is utterly crucial

  255. in the life of prayer.

  256. You,

  257. I don't think you can sustain

  258. a life of prayer

  259. if you believe God

  260. is stonewalling you

  261. or that He's angry with you

  262. or even neutral to you.

  263. And that is why

  264. a life of perseverance in prayer

  265. has its absolute

  266. foundation,

  267. security and assurance

  268. in the gospel.

  269. They're not disconnected.

  270. Prayer is sustained

  271. by the confidence

  272. that God is our Father,

  273. that He is concerned

  274. and that His disposition

  275. towards us

  276. is as Jesus says it is,

  277. He is more inclined

  278. to give you what you need

  279. than the best human father

  280. is inclined to give their children

  281. what they need.

  282. Thirdly,

  283. Jesus teaches us

  284. to prevail in prayer.

  285. without doubting

  286. the Father's love

  287. and I mean

  288. hanging in there,

  289. I mean persevering,

  290. persisting,

  291. not giving up

  292. in a life of prayer,

  293. keep on asking

  294. and seeking

  295. and knocking

  296. until the answer comes

  297. or until God says,

  298. frankly,

  299. stop praying about that issue.

  300. To me,

  301. this instruction

  302. from Jesus though

  303. to prevail in prayer,

  304. it feels

  305. a little inconsistent

  306. with His teaching

  307. to feel secure

  308. in the Father's love.

  309. I mean,

  310. if God is more caring

  311. than the best earthly father,

  312. then why would He

  313. sometimes be so slow

  314. to respond to our prayers?

  315. There seems to be

  316. a little bit of inconsistency

  317. there for me.

  318. It seems strange

  319. that Jesus would put

  320. both of these things

  321. together,

  322. side by side.

  323. In verses 5 to 8,

  324. Jesus tells the story

  325. of a man who goes

  326. to his mate's house

  327. in the middle of the night

  328. because a mate of his

  329. has turned up

  330. to his place

  331. and he hasn't had enough food

  332. and he needs to feed him

  333. in the middle of the night

  334. and he's obviously diabetic,

  335. his sugars are running low

  336. or something like that,

  337. he needs to eat now

  338. and he can't wait for breakfast.

  339. And so he goes

  340. to his mate's place

  341. and he says,

  342. give me three loaves of bread.

  343. He's obviously pretty hungry.

  344. Give me three loaves of bread.

  345. But his friend,

  346. you know,

  347. from upstairs goes,

  348. oh my goodness,

  349. you know,

  350. leans out the window.

  351. The door's locked,

  352. the cats are out,

  353. I put my teeth out,

  354. you know,

  355. and the children are asleep,

  356. you know,

  357. go down to 7-Eleven

  358. and grab some loaves

  359. of bread from down there.

  360. But his mate

  361. just keeps knocking

  362. and asking

  363. until his friend

  364. finally,

  365. you know,

  366. jams on his boxer shorts

  367. and wanders downstairs.

  368. But he doesn't get up

  369. because he wants to.

  370. It's not because

  371. he wants to help his friend,

  372. it's because his friend

  373. has been prevailing,

  374. persisting,

  375. persevering

  376. in knocking

  377. and knocking

  378. and knocking.

  379. It's like a car alarm

  380. that's gone off

  381. in the car park

  382. and won't shut up.

  383. It feels like

  384. an unattractive image

  385. of prayer,

  386. doesn't it?

  387. God only answers

  388. because we annoy him

  389. enough for him to answer.

  390. You see,

  391. when my kids

  392. badger me

  393. for an answer

  394. to a request of theirs,

  395. it's never attractive.

  396. Neither is my response either,

  397. but it's never attractive.

  398. More often than not,

  399. it's because frankly,

  400. I don't want to go out

  401. of my way

  402. to fulfill the request.

  403. It's going to cost me something,

  404. either dollars

  405. or energy or...

  406. Just like this man

  407. in this house,

  408. go away,

  409. it's the middle of the night.

  410. It's not an attractive

  411. image of prayer

  412. and frankly,

  413. it's not really

  414. an attractive image

  415. of God,

  416. is it?

  417. But immediately,

  418. Jesus says,

  419. there's a lesson

  420. to learn here.

  421. He says,

  422. See,

  423. three times,

  424. there are three things here,

  425. sorry,

  426. that stress

  427. the importance

  428. of not giving up

  429. in prayer.

  430. Firstly,

  431. it's the present tense

  432. of the verbs

  433. that signifies

  434. a continuous action.

  435. Keep asking,

  436. keep seeking,

  437. keep knocking.

  438. The second is that

  439. Jesus actually commands

  440. this continuous action

  441. three times.

  442. And then he repeats

  443. the three words,

  444. again in verse 10.

  445. And the third thing

  446. that stress is prevailing

  447. is the three words

  448. used here

  449. get increasingly

  450. close to the answer

  451. and if you like,

  452. show a pressing in on God.

  453. You know,

  454. asking,

  455. it's the simplest thing,

  456. it's basically

  457. where we mostly give up.

  458. Asking,

  459. it requires no movement at all,

  460. just ask God

  461. and see what happens.

  462. Seeking

  463. turns the asking

  464. into

  465. an activity

  466. of pursuit

  467. and then the knocking

  468. on again

  469. and again

  470. and again

  471. signifies

  472. an utter earnestness,

  473. perhaps even

  474. a desperation

  475. that this prayer

  476. must be answered.

  477. Jesus clearly

  478. wants us

  479. to be like

  480. the friend

  481. who just

  482. was out there

  483. and just kept knocking,

  484. just kept knocking.

  485. He wants us

  486. to prevail

  487. in prayer,

  488. to prevail

  489. in God-centered

  490. prayer.

  491. Not prayers

  492. for your Ferrari

  493. and stuff like that,

  494. in God-centered

  495. prayer.

  496. The point of these verses

  497. is to show us

  498. that prevailing prayer,

  499. persisting,

  500. persevering in prayer

  501. is utterly important

  502. for us.

  503. You see,

  504. and what Jesus does

  505. is he stamps

  506. this truth

  507. into our memories

  508. with this terrible image

  509. of this

  510. mate

  511. gone to bed

  512. who just cannot be bothered

  513. to get up and help

  514. without being bothered

  515. enough to help.

  516. But then notice

  517. what Jesus does,

  518. is he makes this sudden turn

  519. in verse 11.

  520. And he shifts

  521. from the grumpy mate

  522. to the image

  523. of the caring father

  524. again.

  525. Jesus qualifies

  526. his point

  527. in verses 11

  528. to 13

  529. by saying

  530. that God

  531. is not

  532. like your friend

  533. in the house.

  534. God is the caring,

  535. loving,

  536. approachable father.

  537. So yes,

  538. sometimes

  539. God gives us

  540. what we need

  541. only after a long,

  542. long season

  543. of prevailing

  544. and persisting

  545. in prayer.

  546. But no,

  547. it's not because

  548. he's uncaring,

  549. it's not because

  550. he's insensitive,

  551. it's not because

  552. he's unable.

  553. What makes it

  554. difficult for us

  555. is that Jesus

  556. does not tell us

  557. directly

  558. why the answers

  559. to our prayers

  560. are postponed.

  561. That's what makes

  562. this passage so difficult.

  563. He doesn't give us

  564. an answer why.

  565. But he does

  566. tell us

  567. indirectly.

  568. He says in verse 11

  569. that a good father

  570. will not give

  571. his son

  572. a serpent

  573. if he asks

  574. for a fish.

  575. In other words,

  576. a good father

  577. will only give

  578. his children

  579. what is good

  580. for them.

  581. And that's the

  582. only answer

  583. to the question

  584. in this text.

  585. When the father

  586. in heaven

  587. gives us

  588. a slow response,

  589. when he wills

  590. that we

  591. persevere

  592. for a season

  593. in prayer

  594. without an

  595. apparent answer

  596. whatsoever,

  597. when he wills

  598. that we keep

  599. knocking,

  600. knocking,

  601. knocking,

  602. knocking,

  603. it's because

  604. he's giving us

  605. a fish

  606. and not a snake.

  607. That's the only

  608. answer we get

  609. from the text.

  610. He is giving us

  611. what is good

  612. for us.

  613. There is something

  614. in the persevering,

  615. in the asking,

  616. in the seeking,

  617. in the knocking

  618. that we

  619. need.

  620. You see,

  621. the power of

  622. prayer

  623. never means

  624. that God

  625. stopped being

  626. God

  627. and that we

  628. start being

  629. God.

  630. That is,

  631. we start

  632. telling God

  633. what he

  634. needs to do.

  635. That's not

  636. what power of

  637. prayer is.

  638. We do not

  639. have the

  640. wisdom or the

  641. grace to run

  642. the universe.

  643. God is God.

  644. He will continue

  645. to decide how

  646. to run the

  647. universe the

  648. ultimate,

  649. the best way.

  650. The Christian

  651. lives by faith

  652. in God's

  653. goodness and

  654. his sovereignty.

  655. And the

  656. promise that

  657. will encourage

  658. us in

  659. prevailing

  660. prayer is

  661. simply verse

  662. 10,

  663. everyone who

  664. asks receives,

  665. he who

  666. seeks finds,

  667. and to him

  668. who knocks,

  669. the door will

  670. be opened.

  671. He's not

  672. unresponsive to

  673. our prayer.

  674. We do not

  675. pray in vain.

  676. He is our

  677. father.

  678. When he hears

  679. his children,

  680. he responds.

  681. He's not deaf,

  682. he's not indifferent,

  683. he's not powerless,

  684. he acts and he

  685. hears.

  686. The final

  687. direction that

  688. Jesus gives us

  689. here in prayer,

  690. and it's really

  691. important for us

  692. to understand about

  693. this concept of

  694. prevailing prayer,

  695. just keep knocking

  696. and knocking and

  697. knocking and

  698. knocking until we

  699. get the answer.

  700. Because the final

  701. direction, if you

  702. like, is a

  703. circling back to

  704. the first point

  705. of God-centered

  706. prayer.

  707. And if I

  708. understand Jesus

  709. here, he means

  710. for this to be

  711. the prevailing

  712. heartbeat of our

  713. prayer life here

  714. at St. Paul's,

  715. and the heartbeat

  716. for your prayer

  717. life for 2017,

  718. Jesus teaches

  719. in verse 13

  720. that our

  721. prevailing for

  722. prayer, our

  723. prevailing prayer,

  724. our consistent

  725. persistence, our

  726. knocking and

  727. knocking and

  728. knocking and

  729. seeking and

  730. seeking and

  731. seeking, should

  732. be a prayer for

  733. the seeking of

  734. the Holy Spirit.

  735. If you then,

  736. verse 13,

  737. if you then,

  738. though you are

  739. evil, there it

  740. is again, know

  741. how to give good

  742. gifts to your

  743. children.

  744. How much more

  745. will your Father

  746. in heaven give

  747. the Holy Spirit

  748. to those who

  749. ask him?

  750. You see, that's

  751. the fish that he

  752. delights to give

  753. us.

  754. That's the fish

  755. right there.

  756. Luke tells us

  757. in chapter 3 that

  758. Jesus, that while

  759. Jesus was praying,

  760. the Holy Spirit

  761. descended on him

  762. like a dove.

  763. The outpouring of

  764. the Spirit of

  765. Pentecost in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  766. chapter 2 came at

  767. the climax of a

  768. 10-day prayer vigil

  769. and in Acts

  770. 4.31 where the

  771. church had prayed,

  772. the place where

  773. they gathered was

  774. shaken and they

  775. were all filled

  776. with the Holy

  777. Spirit.

  778. I would suggest

  779. that prevailing

  780. prayer is the

  781. pathway to the

  782. outpouring of the

  783. Holy Spirit and

  784. this is a constant

  785. need for the

  786. church.

  787. It's a constant

  788. need for us here

  789. at St. Paul's

  790. for ongoing

  791. and continual

  792. renewal.

  793. Even under the

  794. leadership of the

  795. apostles in the

  796. New Testament,

  797. it is evident that

  798. there is still

  799. and there was

  800. still a need

  801. for continual

  802. renewal in the

  803. early church.

  804. Just as Israel's

  805. election as God's

  806. people was

  807. demonstrated at

  808. Mount Sinai,

  809. so the church is

  810. constituted by the

  811. descending and

  812. filling of the

  813. Holy Spirit in

  814. Acts 2,

  815. but just as Israel

  816. was continually

  817. called right

  818. throughout the

  819. Old Testament to

  820. Sinai-like

  821. covenant renewals

  822. with God,

  823. likewise the

  824. church,

  825. even when it

  826. doesn't seem to

  827. be in any form

  828. of major decline,

  829. receives fresh

  830. feelings of the

  831. Holy Spirit.

  832. If you look at

  833. the book of Acts,

  834. there are many

  835. pentecosts in

  836. Acts 4,

  837. 31,

  838. 755,

  839. 817,

  840. 1044,

  841. and 139.

  842. That is,

  843. there's a

  844. continual need to

  845. renew,

  846. continual need for

  847. fullness of the

  848. Holy Spirit for the

  849. church.

  850. I had a conference

  851. church,

  852. a few years ago,

  853. I heard American

  854. Pastor Tim Keller

  855. conduct a seminar

  856. on the history of

  857. revival,

  858. which is basically

  859. what I mean and

  860. what he means when

  861. we're talking about

  862. spiritual renewal.

  863. And he gave you a

  864. glimpse of what the

  865. outpouring of God's

  866. spirit looks like in

  867. the local church.

  868. And let me tell you,

  869. it was compelling for

  870. someone like me,

  871. it just set my heart on

  872. fire when I listened to

  873. him say this.

  874. He said,

  875. spiritual renewal,

  876. he's also written

  877. about it,

  878. which is what I'm

  879. quoting here.

  880. He said,

  881. spiritual renewal is a

  882. work of God in which

  883. the church is beautified

  884. and empowered because

  885. the normal operations of

  886. the Holy Spirit are

  887. intensified.

  888. When there is an

  889. outpouring of the

  890. Spirit on and within

  891. the congregation,

  892. the presence of God

  893. among his people

  894. becomes evident and

  895. palpable.

  896. When spiritual renewal

  897. happens, sleepy or

  898. stagnant Christians

  899. wake up.

  900. There is a new and a

  901. deeper conviction of

  902. sin and repentance

  903. not just for the

  904. major behavioural

  905. sins but for

  906. attitudes, deep

  907. attitudes in the

  908. heart.

  909. But with that,

  910. they experience,

  911. the same people

  912. experience the far

  913. more powerful

  914. assurance of the

  915. nearness of God

  916. and his love for

  917. them.

  918. And with the end

  919. result, the

  920. Christians become

  921. both humble and

  922. bold at exactly the

  923. same time.

  924. The more deeply one

  925. feels his or her

  926. debt of sin, the

  927. more intensely he or

  928. she feels the

  929. wonder of the

  930. payment on their

  931. behalf.

  932. He goes on and

  933. says,

  934. nominal Christians

  935. or Christians by

  936. name only begin to

  937. realise they don't

  938. actually have a living

  939. relationship with

  940. Jesus, with Christ by

  941. grace and they get

  942. converted.

  943. And he said it

  944. electrifies people.

  945. Long-term members are

  946. getting up and talking

  947. about being converted

  948. or speaking of Christ

  949. in radiant terms and

  950. expressing repentance

  951. in brand new ways.

  952. The early stage of

  953. renewal shake up other

  954. nominals and sleepers

  955. into renewal.

  956. And corporately,

  957. there's a sense of

  958. more passion and

  959. more freedom and the

  960. presence of God in

  961. corporate worship is

  962. just palpable.

  963. As a result of this

  964. outpouring of the

  965. Spirit, new people are

  966. brought into the church

  967. and the church begins

  968. to grow.

  969. On the one hand, the

  970. renewed believers create

  971. a far more attractive

  972. community of sharing and

  973. caring and often great

  974. worship.

  975. This is the beautified

  976. community of the King.

  977. This can attract people

  978. from the outside.

  979. On the other hand,

  980. Christians who begin to

  981. experience God's beauty

  982. and His power and love

  983. put their relationship

  984. with Christ and His

  985. church as first in

  986. their lives.

  987. They become radiant and

  988. attractive witnesses,

  989. more willing and

  990. confident to talk to

  991. others about their

  992. faith, more winsome and

  993. less judgmental when they

  994. do so, and more confident

  995. in their own church and

  996. thus more willing to

  997. invite people to visit

  998. their own church.

  999. And as a result, there

  1000. are numerous conversions,

  1001. significant, even at

  1002. times astounding, church

  1003. growth occurs.

1004. And so there is an

  1005. impact on the community

  1006. surrounding the church

  1007. and even the broader

  1008. culture.

  1009. Spiritual renewal

  1010. produces people who

  1011. become involved in

  1012. works of social concern

  1013. and social justice.

1014. The reason for this is

  1015. that real holiness

  1016. changes the private and

  1017. the public lives of

  1018. Christians.

  1019. True religion is not

  1020. merely a matter, a

  1021. private matter, providing

  1022. internal peace and

  1023. fulfillment.

  1024. Rather, it transforms

  1025. our behavior and our

  1026. relationships.

  1027. man, that just,

  1028. bring it on.

  1029. You know, that's what

  1030. spiritual renewal,

  1031. pray for that for

  1032. St. Paul's.

  1033. Pray for that across

  1034. the church.

  1035. That just sets my

  1036. heart on fire.

  1037. You see, when

  1038. Callie is talking about

  1039. spiritual renewal, as

  1040. I believe the Bible

1041. does, he means a deep

  1042. renewal of the gospel

1043. in our hearts, which is

1044. the work of the Holy

  1045. Spirit through the word

  1046. of God.

  1047. It's not some random

  1048. thing that happens

  1049. without the word of

  1050. God.

  1051. It is something where

1052. the Spirit of God does

1053. a deep work in our

  1054. hearts through his word

  1055. and brings us alive.

1056. Let me just stand over

1057. here just for a moment

  1058. and put my community

1059. group hat on and say,

  1060. get in a community

  1061. group in 2007-8.

  1062. This sort of stuff

  1063. happens in community.

  1064. Get into a community

1065. group for your joy, for

  1066. your maturity, for

  1067. your growth, and for

  1068. your transformation as

  1069. a Christian.

  1070. And if your community

1071. group is not praying for

  1072. this kind of renewal,

1073. then work for this kind

  1074. of renewal in your

  1075. community group.

  1076. Okay, that's my plug.

1077. This is the sort of

1078. stuff I want to see

  1079. happen here at St.

  1080. Paul's this year.

1081. Will you pray for it?

1082. Pray for this kind of

  1083. renewal in your heart

1084. for you and for us

  1085. corporately in this

  1086. coming week.

  1087. This is prayer week.

1088. Make it a focus this

  1089. coming week.

1090. There is so much to

  1091. say about spiritual

  1092. renewal of a church,

1093. but we will, let me

1094. just focus on what is

  1095. biblically and

  1096. historically the one

  1097. non-negotiable

  1098. universal ingredient in

  1099. times of spiritual

  1100. renewal.

  1101. Corporate, prevailing,

  1102. intensive, kingdom-centered

  1103. prayer.

1104. A pleading for God, for

  1105. the fullness of the

  1106. Spirit.

  1107. Kingdom-centered prayer

  1108. is focused on God's

  1109. presence and His

  1110. kingdom.

  1111. It's the sort of

  1112. prayer that is

1113. modeled for us in the

  1114. Lord's prayer.

1115. It is a prayer for

  1116. grace to confess our

  1117. sins, to humble

  1118. ourselves, prayer for

  1119. compassion and zeal for

  1120. the flourishing of the

  1121. church and for a

  1122. yearning to know God,

1123. to see His face, to see

  1124. His glory.

  1125. Such prayer need not,

1126. in fact, I would say,

1127. usually does not begin as

  1128. an organized church

  1129. program.

1130. All right, first way to

  1131. begin is let's organize a

  1132. church prayer program.

  1133. Let's have some prayer

  1134. meetings.

  1135. That's not normally how

  1136. it starts.

  1137. It often begins with

  1138. people like you, people

1139. like me, who spend time in

  1140. prayerful self-examination.

  1141. That's where it begins.

1142. So this is prayer week, and

1143. if you do nothing else

  1144. this week, spend this

  1145. prayer this week in

  1146. prayerful self-examination

  1147. with confidence.

1148. And on one hand, total

  1149. confidence in the gospel

1150. and what you have in

  1151. Jesus.

1152. Be hard on yourself at the

1153. same time and search out,

  1154. examine your heart for

  1155. idols that that displace

  1156. Jesus as the supreme

1157. treasure and Lord of your

  1158. life.

  1159. kingdom-centered prayer is

  1160. prevailing.

1161. By this, I simply mean that

  1162. prayer should be constant,

  1163. not sporadic.

  1164. It shouldn't be brief.

1165. Not because, as we've already

1166. seen, that God wants us to

1167. grovel or that he doesn't

  1168. care, but sporadic, brief

1169. prayer shows a lack of

  1170. dependence on God.

  1171. It's a healthy self-sufficiency,

  1172. an unhealthy self-sufficiency.

1173. We must pray without ceasing,

1174. we must pray long, we must

  1175. pray hard for spiritual

  1176. renewal.

1177. And when we do, we will find

1178. that the very process itself

1179. is bringing about the very

1180. thing that we're asking for,

1181. to have our hard hearts

1182. melted, to tear down barriers,

1183. barriers, and to have the

1184. glory of God break through

1185. that we might see his face.

1186. So as we kick off a new year

1187. of ministry, we are doing

1188. what we have done for a

  1189. number of years, beginning

1190. the ministry year in a week

  1191. of prayer.

1192. And we do this, I think,

1193. for a number of reasons.

1194. One is we make a statement

  1195. as a church.

  1196. It's a statement to God,

  1197. it's a statement to the world,

  1198. it's a statement to our own

  1199. consciences, that we exist

1200. as a church to do things

1201. that we cannot do without

1202. the supernatural grace of God.

1203. I believe that God has given

1204. us a vision for the future

1205. for us as a church.

1206. We launched it back in

  1207. November last year.

  1208. But he's given us a vision

1209. which is just so hard

  1210. and so difficult

1211. that we ought to consistently

1212. be going back to him to ask

1213. him for the ability to

1214. fulfill the vision he's given

1215. us because we cannot do it

  1216. ourselves.

  1217. Everything good,

  1218. everything worthwhile,

  1219. everything eternal,

1220. and God glorifying that we

1221. want to do as a church,

1222. we cannot do without the

  1223. supernatural grace of God.

1224. And so as we begin this year

1225. together, I would urge you to

1226. take time to pray for

  1227. yourselves, that you would

1228. enter into a brand new season

  1229. of self-examination.

1230. If you're not used to praying,

1231. maybe the first prayer is,

1232. Lord, help me to pray.

  1233. Teach me to pray.

1234. Ask that you may be with full

  1235. assurance in Christ,

  1236. nonetheless hard on yourself.

  1237. Self-examination.

1238. Lord, expose the idols of my

  1239. heart.

1240. Ask that God would show you

1241. ways in which you don't

1242. represent Christ as you should

1243. in your relationships, in your
