  1. Over the past couple of decades, and maybe even for a little bit longer than that,

  2. there's been a new brand of Christianity that's popping up for a variety of reasons.

  3. It's kind of a new flavour of church.

  4. And this movement is led by people who basically say that they couldn't live up to the standards

  5. that the traditional church was holding them to.

  6. And their response to that is to create churches where sin and failure is almost celebrated.

  7. In these churches, the pastors pride themselves on swearing from the pulpit.

  8. They pride themselves on gaining street cred with outsiders through drinking exploits, sexual conquests,

  9. and a bunch of other things that the more conservative churchgoers amongst us might find a little bit embarrassing.

  10. But here's the thing.

  11. These people, to their mind, are trying to follow Jesus.

  12. Their life choices are guided by the understanding that God welcomes sinners on no merit of their own,

  13. so why stress about trying to change?

  14. And let's especially not put that pressure on anyone else.

  15. Their gospel message amounts to something like,

  16. do whatever you want, God will love you anyway.

  17. Now, as you can probably imagine, this gospel has been well received.

  18. I mean, it's all the perks of God, minus any of the more difficult bits.

  19. It's all grace.

  20. It's no holiness.

  21. And let's be honest, there might be a small part of us

  22. that hears that and thinks,

  23. I wouldn't mind that version of following Jesus.

  24. The version that says, hey, Jesus died for you so that you could be forgiven,

  25. so don't worry about the rules.

  26. Well, that's what we're up to in Leviticus.

  27. Last week, we looked at the Day of Atonement in chapter 16.

  28. God had provided very strict rules and guidelines for how this day worked,

  29. very strict rules for their worship.

  30. There was priests that had to be dressed certain ways.

  31. There were specific sacrifices,

  32. all for the purpose of making atonement for the sins of the people.

  33. So God has drawn the people into his presence by grace.

  34. God has just dealt with the fact that the people are failing at following the rules.

  35. He's just overcome their inability to obey him.

  36. And so you would think that more rules would be a strange place to go.

  37. Having just dealt with the failure of the rules,

  38. to then give more rules seems a little ridiculous.

  39. And yet, chapter 17 begins like this.

  40. The Lord said to Moses, speak to Aaron and his sons,

  41. to all the Israelites and say to them,

  42. this is what the Lord has commanded.

  43. Chapter 18 begins,

  44. the Lord said to Moses, speak to the Israelites and say to them,

  45. I am the Lord your God.

  46. You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live.

  47. And you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I'm bringing you.

  48. Do not follow their practices.

  49. Chapter 19, the Lord said to Moses,

  50. speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them,

  51. be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

  52. Holiness still matters to God even after grace.

  53. Even after dealing with the problem, holiness still matters.

  54. I mean, Israel has just been visibly and ritually, symbolically cleansed.

  55. That was the point of the sacrifice of the day of atonement.

  56. Laws and rules are straight away brought back into the equation.

  57. So atonement didn't actually remove the law.

  58. It didn't even make it unimportant.

  59. So what did it do?

  60. We've got to remember the big picture, the main game of what God is doing here in Leviticus.

  61. And not just here in Leviticus, but in all of the Bible and in all of human history.

  62. God's agenda for Israel is not just to wipe them clean.

  63. He wants to dwell with them.

  64. Relationship is the goal.

  65. He wants them to be in his presence, to have ongoing relationship.

  66. And so everything in the Bible up to this point, the rescue from Egypt,

  67. the commandments being given, the clean and unclean food laws,

  68. the specifics of the priests and how they dress, the tabernacle and how it was to be made,

  69. the purifying of sacrifices, all of it was to make it possible for people to enter the presence of God.

  70. That was the whole point, that God wanted them to be able to come and worship him.

  71. Because that's really what worship means.

  72. Worship is entering into the presence of God, drawing near to God through the way that he has opened.

  73. Worship is relating to God appropriately, the way that he deserves.

  74. And God wasn't looking for visitors.

  75. That wasn't the goal, that Israel would come visit him occasionally and be appropriate or clean or acceptable.

  76. God wanted worshippers, full-time worshippers, people who lived for him and with him.

  77. And so now that they've been cleansed and already drawn into God's presence,

  78. the law functions to define what worship looks like.

  79. The law's function is to show us what life looks like now that they've been drawn into God's presence.

  80. It's you've been cleansed, so now live clean.

  81. It's kind of like God's way of saying, your old life was you playing around in the mud.

  82. I've done the hard job of cleaning you off, don't jump back in the mud.

  83. I've provided some fresh, pristine grass over here, play there.

  84. God is defining what life is like now that you're clean, not do this in order to be clean.

  85. Now that Israel is the other side of the Day of Atonement,

  86. the law is not trying to answer the question, how do I get into the presence of God?

  87. That question's already answered by the Day of Atonement, by the sacrifices repeated annually.

  88. These laws are God defining what day-to-day life looks like for his people.

  89. It's God showing them what it looks like to be in his presence.

  90. Obedience to the law has now become how you worship God.

  91. It's become an extension of their gathering, an extension of their formal time together in the tabernacle.

  92. This is a part of their response to his holiness and to his grace in drawing them to himself.

  93. Now for them, that whole connection to go from formal worship to all of life worship would have been kind of obvious.

  94. See, for them, life was literally built around the tabernacle.

  95. The camp of Israel had the tabernacle at the center.

  96. At the center, that was where they met with God.

  97. That was where the sacrifices happened.

  98. That's where the priests worked.

  99. It was at the center of the camp and around that tent was where everybody lived.

  100. And so sure, you went to the tabernacle on specific days and at specific times and for specific reasons.

  101. But when you came out the front door of your tent to go and buy bread from next door,

  102. you were literally in the shadow of God's house.

  103. When you were yelling at your kids for making too much noise and waking you up early,

  104. you were literally in the shadow of God's house.

  105. God is saying, my presence is especially in the tabernacle, but it's more than that now.

  106. You've been brought into my presence, into a relationship with me.

  107. God is saying, if you want to worship me, it can't be limited to a set of rituals,

  108. a set of formal gatherings.

  109. They're important, they're even essential, but it can't be just that.

  110. Daily holiness, daily obedience, full-time worship is what God desires and what he deserves.

  111. And the law is the gift that he gives us to show us what that will look like,

  112. to show us how we're supposed to function now that we're in his presence full-time.

  113. It's obedience to his standards, holy living in response to his grace.

  114. Grace came first, but law remains because of who God is.

  115. Law remains to help us understand more of his character.

  116. Israel has been brought into the presence of God, but he remains a holy God.

  117. And so holiness is required for life lived in his presence.

  118. But how much more for us now compared to them?

  119. We live on the good side, not just of Israel's Day of Atonement Festival with the goats and the bulls and the priests and all that sort of stuff.

  120. We're on the good side of Easter.

  121. We're on the good side of God providing the once-for-all sacrifice for sin in Jesus.

  122. We're on the good side of God saying that I can deal with all of your sins irreversibly in the sacrifice of my son.

  123. We're on the good side of God saying Jesus is now the only priest forever who sits at God's right hand interceding for us.

  124. And because of him, we have confidence, the New Testament says,

  125. confidence to march into the throne room of a holy God and call him Father.

  126. How much more with the access that we have, which is far greater than they ever enjoyed in the Leviticus.

  127. How much more do we need God's law as a guide for us for how we might best live in his presence?

  128. How we might best worship this God who has done everything to draw us into relationship with him.

  129. How much more do we need and should we appreciate this gift of the law?

  130. Because it gives us the answer to the question, how do I love?

  131. How do I reflect and communicate gratitude to the God who gave his son so that I could know him?

  132. Jesus himself says when you get to the New Testament,

  133. if you love me, you will obey my commands.

  134. The evidence of love for God, the evidence of worship,

  135. is not just how holy you seem on a Sunday night,

  136. how focused you seem, how many notes you took,

  137. how many weeks in a row you've been here, how loud you sang.

  138. They're all good things.

  139. But the evidence of a holy life, the evidence of worship,

  140. is what the rest of your week looks like.

  141. How conscious you are of the presence of God in your day to day.

  142. Now, if obedience is the evidence, we need to make a quick detour,

  143. a quick side point here.

  144. So obedience matters.

  145. That's clear.

  146. But obedience to what?

  147. Obedience to what?

  148. For us who are living on this side of Jesus' death and resurrection,

  149. which laws still count?

  150. Which ones do we have to do?

  151. How do we figure it out?

  152. Or, as Steve put it in week one of this series,

  153. in case you missed it,

  154. if I can eat prawns,

  155. why is gay sex wrong?

  156. Because just a couple of chapters ago,

  157. there was all these rules about what to eat and not eat.

  158. And in chapter 18 that we didn't read today,

  159. in chapter 20,

  160. which is the other side of today's passage,

  161. there's a whole bunch of specific rules about sexual purity,

  162. including the call not to have gay sex.

  163. So how do we figure out which ones we have to listen to?

  164. Well, firstly, and this is really important,

  165. grace, Jesus, doesn't delete the law.

  166. Jesus says in Matthew 5,

  167. he's come to fulfill the law,

  168. every bit of it.

  169. He says we're not allowed to remove even a word from it.

  170. So as a starting point,

  171. all of it matters.

  172. But even though grace hasn't deleted it,

  173. it has done something to it.

  174. It has transformed it.

  175. What do we mean?

  176. What does Jesus mean when he says he's fulfilled it?

  177. Well, let's look at three different kinds.

  178. First of all,

  179. there's the laws about clean and unclean.

  180. Laws around foods and different things.

  181. Those laws are superseded.

  182. They're replaced.

  183. They existed to create a distinction between God's people

  184. who did one thing and everybody else who did something else.

  185. They were physical markers.

  186. But Jesus makes it explicitly clear in the New Testament.

  187. In Mark 7,

  188. he says food doesn't have the power to make you unclean.

  189. In fact,

  190. he declares all food clean.

  191. So he explicitly tells us we can leave those ones behind.

  192. But the reason we can is because

  193. the physical marker has been replaced by a spiritual marker.

  194. Because uncleanness is not a dirt issue.

  195. It's a heart issue.

  196. And it's an issue that can only be overcome through Jesus' death in our place.

  197. So the cleaning work is a work of the Holy Spirit,

  198. not a work of your diet.

  199. And so we can leave those things behind.

  200. Cleanness still matters.

  201. Clean and unclean distinction still matters.

  202. But it's just not expressed in diet anymore.

  203. It's expressed through those who trust Jesus and have been made clean

  204. and those who are trying to make themselves clean.

  205. And it's not working.

  206. That's the first one,

  207. the clean,

  208. unclean laws.

  209. The second kind of laws that we've looked at as we've been through Leviticus

  210. is ritual laws.

  211. The laws that tell us about who can be priests,

  212. what the priests have to wear,

  213. what day they should go to the tabernacle,

  214. what shape the tabernacle should be,

  215. what material for the temple in the tabernacle,

  216. what material for the utensils in the tabernacle,

  217. how to clean them,

  218. who cleans them,

  219. when they clean them,

  220. that sort of stuff.

  221. All of that stuff has been superseded by Jesus.

  222. It's been replaced by Jesus.

  223. Again,

  224. in Hebrews in the New Testament,

  225. it's explicit.

  226. Jesus has become the once for all sufficient sacrifice for sin,

  227. which means there's no more sacrifices required.

  228. So laws about sacrifices are redundant because the complete sacrifice is done.

  229. The account is settled.

  230. And then on top of that,

  231. we know that he's our high priest forever.

  232. So you don't need priests anymore,

  233. which means you don't need someone standing at the front in special clothes.

  234. Jesus has replaced that.

  235. But the third group within that law in the Old Testament,

  236. which is sometimes referred to as the moral laws or the ethical code,

  237. the laws about sexual purity,

  238. about caring for the poor,

  239. about respecting your parents,

  240. that sort of thing.

  241. Those are the ones that we have more trouble with,

  242. the ones that might be more controversial.

  243. Firstly,

  244. how are those laws fulfilled?

  245. Well,

  246. what Jesus does is live in perfect obedience to them in a way that we never could.

  247. What he does is perfectly tick the box,

  248. more than tick the box,

  249. so that he has passed the standard that the law sets.

  250. And then what he does is for the person who comes to him seeking forgiveness,

  251. he takes his perfect obedience and puts it onto them,

  252. so that they have a past level of obedience.

  253. And so our inability to live up to those standards

  254. no longer is a barrier to keep us away from God,

  255. because Jesus has dealt with that by being perfectly obedient.

  256. But,

  257. this law still matters,

  258. and let me tell you why.

  259. See, for Israel here in Leviticus,

  260. having just been made clean,

  261. already now in a relationship with God as his people,

  262. the laws are there to reflect and reveal God's character to them.

  263. We don't get to the New Testament

  264. and have Jesus start flicking away these moral laws as outdated or unimportant.

  265. The function of the law was for Israel to see what God cared about,

  266. see what mattered to him,

  267. to see that he is a pure God who requires purity.

  268. He is a preeminent God who requires exclusive worship.

  269. These laws shift from being oppressive standards that we have to reach

  270. to being a model of what it looks like to live the life that God has designed.

  271. A model of what it looks like to live in the presence of God,

  272. because these are the expressions of him,

  273. the extensions of his character.

  274. God's grace to his people in the day of atonement,

  275. and ultimately in Jesus,

  276. drags worship out of a formal ritualistic setting

  277. and spills it out into the day-to-day life of people.

  278. And so now,

  279. through obedience to these laws,

  280. we worship God.

  281. We don't convince him to take us into his presence.

  282. He's done that.

  283. But these laws are there to show us,

  284. if you love me,

  285. this is what it looks like to love me.

  286. If you want to worship me,

  287. this is what it looks like to worship me.

  288. Now all of life can be lived

  289. and must be lived worshipping God for those who belong to him.

  290. Now at first,

  291. this blurring of lines between

  292. formal worship in the temple

  293. and all of life worship

  294. might feel like this is a little oppressive.

  295. Like there's even more opportunities for you to stuff this up now.

  296. You can kind of understand those churches that are thinking

  297. this would be easier if we just pushed the laws to the side

  298. and focused on the forgiveness stuff.

  299. Because if we're supposed to worship God all the time,

  300. if these laws matter that much,

  301. it feels like there's more pressure.

  302. That is except for one thing.

  303. Worship doesn't just include this all of life daily obedience.

  304. It empowers it.

  305. Worship doesn't just include every minute of every day

  306. and the obedience to these laws.

  307. Worship, being in the presence of God,

  308. empowers obedience to these laws,

  309. motivates obedience to these laws.

  310. Now what made Israel holy

  311. here in Leviticus

  312. is not what they did.

  313. It's God.

  314. It's what he was doing.

  315. He is the basis for their holiness.

  316. Holiness means being set apart,

  317. being chosen.

  318. When God chose them,

  319. he made them holy.

  320. It was he who chose them

  321. and in choosing them,

  322. set them apart as his,

  323. belonging to him as holy.

  324. And it's through the ongoing meeting with him

  325. that they progressively become

  326. more sanctified or more holy in their actions.

  327. God's holiness,

  328. his purity rubs off on them

  329. as they spend time with him.

  330. So if you think of it like

  331. God is the sun.

  332. Now when you lie in the sun,

  333. its radiance will bring you color

  334. and warmth.

  335. Different colors depending on your skin type.

  336. But it will bring you color

  337. and warmth and heat

  338. and health to your body.

  339. Case in point is

  340. the two fairly tanned,

  341. relaxed, healthy looking people

  342. in the front row.

  343. Now in the same way,

  344. basking in God's presence,

  345. basking in his glory and holiness

  346. in the formal gatherings

  347. at the temple,

  348. at the tabernacle,

  349. using the forms that God

  350. had prescribed for Israel

  351. was designed to make them holy.

  352. to progressively transform them.

  353. In fact,

  354. we can push this analogy

  355. a little bit further.

  356. Having just understood

  357. that worshiping God's presence

  358. now kind of flow through all of life,

  359. what's the uniqueness of gathering then?

  360. It's almost like the difference

  361. between sunbaking

  362. and just walking to work

  363. when the sun is out.

  364. Now if the sun is out both times,

  365. you will get some heat,

  366. some light,

  367. some warmth.

  368. You will get some awareness

  369. of its benefit.

  370. But when you sunbake,

  371. you focus your attention

  372. on the sun.

  373. You position yourself.

  374. You pour your energy

  375. towards the sun.

  376. You limit your other activities

  377. so that you can absorb

  378. as much as possible

  379. from the sun.

  380. And the result is

  381. you will get more from the sun.

  382. You'll get more red or brown.

  383. You'll get more warmth,

  384. more vitamin D.

  385. Likewise,

  386. everything that God has established

  387. in terms of the rituals for Israel,

  388. the Sabbath gathering requirements,

  389. function as an opportunity for Israel

  390. to sunbake in His radiance.

  391. to focus themselves

  392. on His holiness

  393. and His majesty

  394. and His power.

  395. Now He specified

  396. how it happens,

  397. when it happens,

  398. and everything that He specified

  399. in Leviticus.

  400. You thought they were just

  401. random details

  402. about which material

  403. and what shape things should be.

  404. Every detail

  405. was supposed to focus them

  406. on Him.

  407. From the shape of utensils

  408. to who was up the front,

  409. everything was to focus

  410. on God Himself

  411. so that the result would be

  412. an encounter with God

  413. that transformed them,

  414. that progressively made them

  415. more holy.

  416. God is the active party

  417. and He has been the whole time.

  418. He's the only one

  419. who can sanctify people,

  420. who can wash them,

  421. who can make them holy,

  422. even in the Day of Atonement

  423. which God gave them instructions

  424. on how to do.

  425. In the sacrifices,

  426. in the ritual,

  427. it's God who must

  428. cleanse the people.

  429. The goat's not getting it done.

  430. The rituals themselves

  431. don't guarantee God's action.

  432. They can't achieve cleansing

  433. in and of themselves.

  434. They are absolutely dependent

  435. on God's decision,

  436. on God's power.

  437. God is the key.

  438. And that's why every aspect

  439. of Israel's corporate worship

  440. was directed towards

  441. showing God's holiness,

  442. revealing His glory

  443. so that as they dwelt

  444. in that glorious presence,

  445. they would be changed

  446. progressively

  447. and they would be better equipped

  448. to be the priest nation

  449. they were supposed to be.

  450. be glowing with His wonder

  451. and majesty and power

  452. so that the world around

  453. would look

  454. and see the sun

  455. that they were basking under.

  456. The corporate worship of Israel

  457. was the key means

  458. by which God would achieve

  459. the day-to-day holiness

  460. of His people.

  461. Time in His presence

  462. equipped them

  463. to live with Him

  464. during the week.

  465. Now this side of Jesus,

  466. we've taken a big step forward

  467. when it comes to gathering

  468. as God's people.

  469. There's a lot less blood.

  470. We did have it in our mind

  471. to decorate the Leviticus backdrop

  472. with animal carcasses,

  473. but we thought better of it

  474. at the last minute.

  475. We have come a long way

  476. when it comes to gathering

  477. as God's people.

  478. We've already reminded ourselves

  479. that we have confidence

  480. to enter the most holy place,

  481. the throne room of God,

  482. because of the blood of Jesus,

  483. who died once for all

  484. that we might be forgiven

  485. and cleansed.

  486. But God still encourages us

  487. to gather.

  488. In fact, in Hebrews 10,

  489. just after telling us

  490. that we have confidence

  491. to enter the holy place,

  492. the writer goes on to say,

  493. therefore,

  494. don't stop meeting together.

  495. God is present among His people

  496. by His Spirit all the time.

  497. Always present,

  498. and yet there still seems to be

  499. something unique

  500. about when we gather.

  501. Some unique opportunity for us

  502. as the gathered people

  503. around God's Word

  504. to encounter His presence

  505. in a special way.

  506. And in fact,

  507. that's the whole point of gathering.

  508. That's why we bother doing this.

  509. So that you might encounter

  510. God among His people.

  511. So that you might see His glory,

  512. taste His glory,

  513. feel His glory,

  514. and then be transformed by it.

  515. Is that what you're expecting

  516. when you came to church tonight?

  517. Is that what you were hoping for?

  518. When you walked in the doors,

  519. that you would get to encounter

  520. God's holiness and glory?

  521. Were you expecting to come here

  522. and walk out different,

  523. transformed,

  524. because you'd encountered

  525. the living God?

  526. Or were you hoping for a service

  527. that finishes on time?

  528. Good supper?

  529. Maybe a half-decent conversation?

  530. God gathers His people

  531. so that they might encounter Him

  532. and be transformed.

  533. Now, I think that our church,

  534. our tradition,

  535. we get nervous

  536. about some of this sort of language.

  537. Some people have misused ideas

  538. like experience when it comes to God.

  539. And the point isn't that you come to church

  540. chasing an experience.

  541. The point is,

  542. you come to church chasing God.

  543. And that will be an experience

  544. when you encounter Him.

  545. But what I'm trying to say here is,

  546. the goal for us gathering

  547. is not that you know

  548. that God loves you.

  549. The goal of us gathering

  550. is that you feel loved by God.

  551. The goal is that you come here

  552. not to gather some new information,

  553. but that you taste

  554. and feel God's love.

  555. That you know His holiness

  556. and His purity.

  557. That you get a vision

  558. of who this God is

  559. who has drawn you

  560. into a relationship with Him

  561. so that you walk out the door

  562. just busting with desire

  563. to love and serve that God

  564. for the rest of the week

  565. and the rest of your life

  566. and every day

  567. until He calls you home

  568. to be with Him.

  569. God has designed this

  570. to be your taste of heaven.

  571. However imperfectly

  572. we might execute it.

  573. God gathers His people

  574. so that they might encounter Him

  575. and be transformed

  576. and that's the key

  577. to growing in holiness.

  578. Doesn't matter how many strategies

  579. you have,

  580. how self-disciplined you are,

  581. how many books you read,

  582. if you're going to grow

  583. to be more like Jesus,

  584. you need to spend time with Him.

  585. And one of the key ways

  586. that you can do that

  587. is by gathering with His people.

  588. This matters because

  589. holiness is not a behavioral issue.

  590. It's not an effort issue.

  591. It's not something

  592. you've got to try harder at

  593. if you're not doing it well.

  594. It's a heart issue.

  595. In the New Testament

  596. in Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  597. there's this story

  598. where a young man

  599. comes to Jesus

  600. and says,

  601. Rabbi,

  602. what must I do

  603. to be saved?

  604. The end point

  605. of the story

  606. is that Jesus

  607. tells the story

  608. of the Good Samaritan

  609. and basically says

  610. to this guy,

  611. you've got to

  612. love your neighbor.

  613. which is exactly

  614. what Leviticus 19

  615. said to Israel.

  616. But before Jesus

  617. gets into this story

  618. of the Good Samaritan,

  619. his first response

  620. to this guy is,

  621. keep the commandments.

  622. Now,

  623. undeterred by this response,

  624. not feeling shut down

  625. at all,

  626. the young man

  627. presses Jesus

  628. and says,

  629. all these I've kept

  630. since I was a boy.

  631. He's like,

  632. yep,

  633. done.

  634. Box ticked.

  635. Now,

  636. you might be thinking

  637. he's just an idiot

  638. and doesn't know

  639. how bad he is

  640. and he's ignorant

  641. of his sinfulness

  642. but Jesus doesn't

  643. argue with him.

  644. Jesus doesn't go,

  645. hey,

  646. you think you're holy

  647. but nah.

  648. He just kind of

  649. moves on

  650. and talks about

  651. loving your neighbor

  652. as the true

  653. fulfillment of the law.

  654. Now,

  655. there's two things

  656. that we need

  657. to grab there.

  658. Firstly,

  659. it seems like

  660. it's possible

  661. to tick the box

  662. of keeping the law

  663. without actually

  664. being holy.

  665. I mean,

  666. it's possible

  667. that this guy

  668. had done the,

  669. you know,

  670. only God,

  671. not lied,

  672. respected his parents,

  673. not given false testimony,

  674. not coveted,

  675. not committed adultery.

  676. It seems that

  677. you can actually

  678. tick the box

  679. of obedience,

  680. you can do

  681. the right actions

  682. but not actually

  683. be holy

  684. or honor God

  685. in the way

  686. that you're doing them

  687. which gives us

  688. a clue

  689. that that was never

  690. the point of the law

  691. in the first place.

  692. If you can meet

  693. the standard

  694. and Jesus says,

  695. yep,

  696. not quite there,

  697. the law wasn't

  698. designed to get you there.

  699. That's the first thing.

  700. The second thing is

  701. it shows us

  702. what's missing.

  703. For this guy,

  704. the missing element

  705. is his heart.

  706. Because the laws

  707. were there

  708. as a display,

  709. a revealing

  710. of God's character.

  711. The point of the law

  712. is not to give you

  713. boxes to tick

  714. or a bar

  715. to jump over.

  716. That's why Jesus,

  717. when he gets to

  718. Matthew 5,

  719. going through

  720. a whole bunch of laws,

  721. sets up this pattern

  722. where he starts with,

  723. you've heard it said

  724. to the people long ago,

  725. you shall not murder

  726. and anyone who murders

  727. will be subject

  728. to judgment.

  729. This is the box

  730. that this young guy

  731. was ticking.

  732. Yep,

  733. done.

  734. But Jesus continues.

  735. He says,

  736. but I tell you

  737. that anyone who is angry

  738. with a brother or sister

  739. will be subject

  740. to judgment.

  741. The point of the law

  742. wasn't to give you

  743. a baseline.

  744. It wasn't just

  745. to limit the act

  746. of physically

  747. ending someone's life.

  748. What it was

  749. communicating

  750. was that people

  751. and life

  752. matter to God.

  753. And not just

  754. whether that life

  755. is alive or not,

  756. but the day-to-day

  757. experience of living

  758. and even anger

  759. flies in the face

  760. of a God

  761. who cares

  762. and cares for

  763. and values

  764. that individual.

  765. God's grace

  766. and specifically

  767. his grace

  768. in atoning for sin,

  769. in offering forgiveness,

  770. transforms the law.

  771. Now when we come to it,

  772. we need to read it

  773. through the lens

  774. of Jesus.

  775. We need to read it

  776. hearing Jesus' words,

  777. I have fulfilled it.

  778. Which isn't the same

  779. as deleting

  780. or cancelling.

  781. What he's done

  782. is explicitly

  783. put the law

  784. and the rules

  785. where they were

  786. supposed to be

  787. the whole time.

  788. Not as a standard

  789. to be lived up to,

  790. but as a description

  791. of the heart of God.

  792. As a revelation

  793. of what matters

  794. to him.

  795. As an invitation

  796. to love

  797. what God loves.

  798. To care about

  799. what matters to him.

  800. And as an invitation

  801. to set our hearts

  802. apart

  803. for him.

  804. That's the heart

  805. of what true

  806. and right worship

  807. of God looks like.

  808. That's real holiness.

  809. Not simple rule keeping

  810. or box ticking,

  811. but a heart

  812. that loves God.

  813. A heart that loves

  814. what matters to God.

  815. It looks like

  816. treasuring Jesus.

  817. Living every minute

  818. of every day for him.

  819. Not 65 minutes

  820. a week on a Sunday.

  821. But treasuring Jesus

  822. in the way you treat

  823. your family.

  824. Loving and treasuring

  825. him in the way

  826. you treat other

  827. commuters on your way

  828. to work or uni.

  829. Loving and treasuring

  830. him in the way

  831. you eat your breakfast.

  832. Every moment

  833. lived consciously

  834. in the presence

  835. of the God

  836. of heaven and earth

  837. who gave his son

  838. so that you could

  839. live in his presence.

  840. what he requires

  841. is your heart.

  842. The very center

  843. of you.

  844. He's not keeping

  845. a scorebook

  846. of what you have

  847. and haven't done.

  848. He wants your heart.

  849. The bit that drives

  850. your decisions.

  851. Your reactions.

  852. And laws

  853. can't change hearts.

  854. Rules

  855. won't make you love.

  856. love.

  857. But time

  858. basking in the grace

  859. of God to you.

  860. Time spent

  861. focusing

  862. on how majestic

  863. and powerful

  864. and holy

  865. our God is.

  866. Time spent

  867. with your eyes

  868. fixed

  869. on Jesus.

  870. That

  871. produces love.

  872. That produces

  873. a desire

  874. for holiness.

  875. A desire

  876. for obedience.

  877. That produces

  878. the kind

  879. of security

  880. that means

  881. we can receive

  882. the law

  883. as a gift

  884. rather than

  885. carry it

  886. as a burden.

  887. We opened

  888. tonight

  889. reflecting on

  890. the relative

  891. appeal

  892. of a new

  893. brand of

  894. Christianity.

  895. Built

  896. around the

  897. concept of

  898. conceding

  899. on holiness,

  900. giving up

  901. and even

  902. affirming

  903. the presence

  904. of sin.

  905. And it

  906. does sound

  907. appealing.

  908. But it

  909. just doesn't

  910. work.

  911. Because what

  912. it reflects

  913. is a

  914. complete

  915. misunderstanding

  916. of what

  917. God has

  918. done in

  919. Jesus and

  920. how secure

  921. that makes

  922. us.

  923. I mean,

  924. it misses

  925. the whole

  926. point.

  927. God wants

  928. you to be

  929. holy for

  930. your sake.

  931. God wants

  932. you to be

  933. able to be

  934. with him.

  935. That's the

  936. work he's

  937. doing in

  938. the life

  939. of a

  940. Christian.

  941. He's

  942. progressively

  943. making them

  944. holy in

  945. preparation

  946. for heaven.

  947. In

  948. preparation

  949. for

  950. completely

  951. uninhibited

  952. joy in

  953. his presence.

  954. To reject

  955. the call

  956. to holiness,

  957. to reject

  958. the law

  959. like it

  960. doesn't

  961. matter,

  962. is to

  963. reject the

  964. invitation

  965. to live

  966. with God.

  967. To

  968. reject

  969. obedience

  970. and law

  971. as

  972. unimportant

  973. is to

  974. reject

  975. the

  976. grace

  977. that

  978. God

  979. has

  980. worked

  981. in

  982. sending

  983. Jesus

  984. to die

  985. so that

  986. you can

  987. be in

  988. his

  989. presence.

  990. The call

  991. to be

  992. holy is a

  993. call to

  994. pursue

  995. God.

  996. It's not a

  997. call to be

  998. good.

  999. It's a

  1000. call to

  1001. love God.

  1002. God.

  1003. So lack

  1004. of holiness

  1005. in your

  1006. life,

  1007. if you're

  1008. not more

  1009. like Jesus

  1010. than you

  1011. were 12

  1012. months ago

  1013. or two

  1014. years ago

  1015. or 10

  1016. years ago,

  1017. lack of

  1018. holiness is

  1019. not a

  1020. behavioural

  1021. issue that

  1022. you need to

  1023. fix with

  1024. self-discipline

  1025. or with

  1026. guilt or

  1027. with scolding

  1028. yourself.

  1029. It's a

  1030. heart issue.

  1031. And so if

  1032. you're not

  1033. growing more

  1034. like Jesus,

  1035. the question

  1036. you've got to

  1037. ask is not

  1038. have I been

  1039. trying?

  1040. The question

  1041. is am I

  1042. pursuing God

  1043. in my life?

  1044. Am I

  1045. getting myself

  1046. into his

  1047. presence?

  1048. And if the

  1049. answer is no,

  1050. then the only

  1051. place you can

  1052. go to change

  1053. that, to fix

  1054. that, the only

  1055. place you can

  1056. go to have

  1057. your heart

  1058. reshaped and

  1059. moulded and

  1060. set on fire

  1061. with love for

  1062. God,

  1063. is to

  1064. bask in

  1065. the glory

  1066. of God

  1067. revealed in

  1068. the face

  1069. of Jesus

  1070. who died

  1071. and rose

  1072. again so

  1073. that we

  1074. might know

  1075. him.

  1076. Let's pray.

  1077. Father God,

  1078. we want to

  1079. concede that

  1080. laws are

  1081. intimidating,

  1082. that often

  1083. we're known

  1084. as hypocrites

  1085. because we

  1086. speak about

  1087. how we're

  1088. supposed to

  1089. be but we

  1090. don't back

  1091. it up with

  1092. how we

  1093. live.

  1094. We want to

  1095. thank you that

  1096. our failures

  1097. are completely

  1098. covered by

  1099. Jesus.

  1100. We want to

  1101. thank you that

  1102. there is nothing

  1103. that we could

  1104. do that would

  1105. undo what has

  1106. already been

  1107. done on the

  1108. cross.

  1109. And Father,

  1110. we want to ask

  1111. that you would

  1112. help us to

  1113. see you,

  1114. to encounter

  1115. you, to

  1116. experience you

  1117. in such a

  1118. way that we

  1119. would see the

  1120. law as the

  1121. gift that it

  1122. is, that we

  1123. would desire

  1124. holiness not so

  1125. that we could be

  1126. good but so

  1127. that we could be

  1128. with you, so

  1129. that we might

  1130. enjoy your

  1131. presence even in

  1132. the mundane

  1133. details of

  1134. catching a

  1135. train or eating

  1136. a meal.

  1137. God, open our

  1138. eyes to the

  1139. invitation that

  1140. sits behind the

  1141. law, the

  1142. invitation to be

  1143. with you, to

  1144. love you as

  1145. you deserve.

  1146. Father, make us

  1147. more like your

  1148. sun.

  1149. Shine on us in

  1150. such a way that

  1151. we glow so

  1152. that the world

  1153. around us might

  1154. see the joy and

  1155. peace and hope

  1156. that is offered

  1157. in you.

  1158. Father, thank you

  1159. for gathering us

  1160. tonight that we

  1161. might sunbake in

  1162. your radiance.

  1163. Please reveal

  1164. yourself to us

  1165. tonight and don't

1166. let us walk out of

  1167. this room the

  1168. same.

  1169. Amen.
