  1. Katie and I went to Bali for our honeymoon.

  2. We had an amazing time of surfing and relaxing and resting.

  3. And after planning a wedding, you need that.

  4. You really do need that.

  5. Because planning a wedding is a very stressful thing to do.

  6. We need that holiday, and Bali was that just for us.

  7. Holidaying and resting presents an ideal many of us have for what work is and what work is about.

  8. We earn enough money so we can indulge ourselves in holidays and travel and rest.

  9. Where instead of waking up in a 9-to-5 job, we wake up late and drag our feet to the resort pool and lounge and sip cocktails all day until we go to sleep.

  10. And do all over again.

  11. Or we might do the opposite thing.

  12. And we seek a thrilling adventure holiday where we might go hike mountains or dive in underwater caves or surf the best waves ever.

  13. Rest for these people is escaping the mundane cycle of life.

  14. And whatever throws themselves into an adventure where they don't know what might come next.

  15. For many, the goal of their work is rest.

  16. The goal of their work is holiday and travel.

  17. And it's not a wrong way to think of it.

  18. For we see in the Bible, God has the same goal for work.

  19. Rest.

  20. Rest.

  21. In Genesis 1, we have six days of creating, of working.

  22. As God creates, He works.

  23. And after He has made the heavens and the earth, after He has made man in His likeness to bear His image,

  24. on the seventh day we read that God rested from His work.

  25. Our desire for rest from work is not simply due to our being limited or finite.

  26. Our desire to rest is actually patterned after God Himself who declared in His own rest that the crown, the jewel of all work, is rest.

  27. But because of man's rebellion, this work became fraught with toil and hardship.

  28. As we read in Genesis chapter 3, the crown of rest could no longer be realized because of sin.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  29. The wonderful hope, though, is that God, out of His freedom and desire to know us and make a way for us to be in His presence,

  30. sets up a system in which we are able to enjoy rest with Him.

  31. The kind of rest we were created for.

  32. Resting with God.

  33. He creates a day called the Sabbath, which you read about in Exodus chapter 20.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  34. A law that required the people of God to rest on the seventh day of the week, after working six days, just like in creation.

  35. We see that despite our sin, despite our rebellion, God intends to dwell with His people.

  36. Sabbath rest is the climax of the working week for the Hebrew people,

  37. as they gather as God's people in God's place to enjoy God's blessing and God's mercy.

  38. And as we've been noting throughout this series, the book of Leviticus,

  39. this book is a book about how God graciously provides a way for people to live in His presence.

  40. They may become holy, set apart, and distinct from the rest of the nations.

  41. At the heart of this program for holiness was keeping the Sabbath.

  42. As long as they kept the Sabbath rest, they could enjoy the presence of God,

  43. that which was like the Garden of Eden.

  44. And the back end of Leviticus is mostly about instructions on the Sabbath

  45. and the different kinds of Sabbath there are.

  46. And I believe from chapters 23 to 26,

  47. these chapters helpfully critique our modern world today

  48. and its approach to work and rest.

  49. But more than that, they also foreshadow the rest that is to come,

  50. the rest that shapes the gospel as well.

  51. That is to say, the goal of the Sabbath laws was not to be an ending of themselves,

  52. but to point towards the rest that is to come in Jesus.

  53. But first, let's look at Leviticus and see how it critiques our modern day world.

  54. Firstly, it promotes the importance of rest and the danger of overworking for humanity.

  55. Jesus said Himself in Mark's gospel that Sabbath is for man and not man for Sabbath,

  56. which is a helpful reminder when we read about Sabbath in Leviticus.

  57. It's there to serve us, to help us, to enjoy us, to rest.

  58. In chapter 23 of Leviticus, we are given an outline of different kinds of feasts and festivals

  59. that the people of God were to celebrate.

  60. But it's the Sabbath day principle that informs all of them.

  61. From verse 1 of 23, it says,

  62. These festivals were called sacred assemblies.

  63. That is, they were special gatherings of God's people.

  64. They were holy gatherings, set apart from the rest of the life that they lived.

  65. That the weekly Sabbath is also called a sacred assembly,

  66. characterizes the nature of these feasts and these festivals.

  67. That the point of them was to continue to underpin the importance of Sabbath rest.

  68. The regular pattern of life was constantly interrupted by the various festivals and the weekly Sabbath.

  69. Their whole calendar centered around it in order that they would be constantly aware of the God

  70. who called them to remember the Sabbath and to keep it holy.

  71. Our world today is nothing like this.

  72. We revolve our calendar around our work, around the end of financial year, not rest.

  73. We've seen this in the recent push to cut penalty rates on weekends.

  74. We no longer think it's necessary to compensate those who forego their rest for the sake of others.

  75. The modern day economy is seven days.

  76. Seven working days.

  77. God gave Sabbath rest to his people to show that work is relative,

  78. that no matter how much they work, it's still God who provides for them.

  79. It's still God in the end who gives them what they have.

  80. Everything they have is by the grace of God, not due to their effort in their work.

  81. That's what the weekly Sabbath pointed towards.

  82. That everything they have was given to them by God.

  83. These festivals and weekly Sabbaths remind people of that, to stop and be thankful.

  84. Such is an important lesson for us to remember.

  85. That everything we have is by the gracious provision of God.

  86. That everything we have is by the grace of God.

  87. We have to be like the world, who in the end worships work.

  88. Devoting themselves to it.

  89. Centering their whole lives and their calendar around it,

  90. so they can feel secure and comfortable.

  91. We devote ourselves to the Lord God.

  92. And Sabbath rest is a constant tool for the Israelite people,

  93. giving them the opportunity to do that.

  94. To teach them, not to revolve their lives around their work.

  95. Not to trust in themselves as the ones who provide for themselves.

  96. But to trust in God, who is good and gracious.

  97. Who makes a way to provide for them.

  98. To enjoy His presence.

  99. So that's the first thing.

  100. Secondly, it promotes the importance of rest and the danger of overworking for the land.

  101. Sabbath rest is made for man, but since it's made for man,

  102. it ought to benefit the land as well.

  103. For in creation, mankind and the land enjoyed a perfect relationship in which He could work without struggle,

  104. without toil, the ground.

  105. But because of sin, our relationship with the ground became disordered and dysfunctional and corrupted.

  106. Work became a struggle.

  107. By the sweat of your brow, you will work the ground, as Genesis 3 says.

  108. And so it was important the ground also enjoyed Sabbath rest.

  109. Leviticus 25, the first two verses.

  110. The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai,

  111. Speak to the Israelites and say to them,

  112. When you enter the land I am going to give you,

  113. the land itself must observe a Sabbath to the Lord.

  114. My dad, in the last couple of years, has taken up gardening.

  115. He loves gardening now.

  116. He plants all his fruit and vegetables.

  117. He's got four garden beds in his property at home, in the backyard.

  118. And I myself have actually taken quite a bit of interest in this.

  119. I've actually really enjoyed going back to my parents' place

  120. and looking at the garden and surveying all its wonder

  121. and just sitting back and going,

  122. Oh, wow.

  123. Where are you growing, Dad?

  124. Where are you growing this kind of fruit, that kind of vegetable?

  125. One of the really important things about growing a garden,

  126. I'm sure if you're interested in it, you'll know,

  127. is that you can't just continually grow things in the garden bed.

  128. You've got to let the garden bed every now and then rest,

  129. to fallow, to sit for a time period,

  130. and then plant again in it.

  131. If you want sustainable growth from the best kind of crop,

  132. you've got to allow for this resting period.

  133. It's the same here in Leviticus 25.

  134. God wants the land to have rest, its own Sabbath,

  135. every seventh year, to rest from being worked upon.

  136. The land then would have the freedom to produce whatever it could on its own,

  137. and the Israelite people would feed from that.

  138. Such a Sabbath rest, though,

  139. ultimately allows for man to be reminded of their place in creation

  140. and the immense value of the land.

  141. It allows the people of God to humble themselves,

  142. to not see the land as theirs to consume and to pillage and to take from it,

  143. but the land as God's given to them to work and to take care of,

  144. to be image bearers as they do so,

  145. to show God's goodness in creation.

  146. God loves everything he has made.

  147. And from the beginning,

  148. in Genesis 1,

  149. before there even was man,

  150. there were six days of creation

  151. in which God said,

  152. it was good,

  153. it was good,

  154. it was good,

  155. it was good,

  156. it was good,

  157. it was good.

  158. Creation has its own value apart from us as people.

  159. And God won't take any injustice and abuse lightly.

  160. He has no patience for it.

  161. In the following chapter,

  162. he says in verse 27,

  163. verse 33,

  164. I will scatter you among the nations.

  165. He'll kick them out

  166. and draw out my sword and pursue you.

  167. He'll drive them out from the land.

  168. Then the land will enjoy its Sabbath years

  169. all the time that it lies desolate.

  170. All that time that it lies desolate,

  171. the land will have the rest it did not have

  172. during its Sabbath you lived in it.

  173. God immensely cares for his creation.

  174. The land is precious to him

  175. and has immense dignity and value in its own right.

  176. Wouldn't it be awful if he lived in such a society

  177. that abused and pillaged the land

  178. for its own financial gain?

  179. Many of us don't think about the idea of justice for the land.

  180. And if we're honest, we probably don't care.

  181. I know I'm guilty of that.

  182. We may ignore all the science that tells us

  183. that our constant consumption is causing more harm than good,

  184. that our foresting and mining,

  185. our pumping into the air of CO2 emissions

  186. is having a detrimental effect on the wildlife

  187. and the earth itself.

  188. And the most scathing indictment upon us as believers

  189. is that the secular science

  190. are the ones who are leading the charge

  191. in providing justice for the land.

  192. People who are not believers,

  193. they're the ones leading the charge,

  194. not God's people,

  195. not the ones who bear God's image,

  196. who are called to take care of the land.

  197. Now, I don't want you to think

  198. the application of this sermon

  199. is to recycle and vote for the Greens.

  200. Although those things aren't necessarily bad,

  201. but I do want you to be aware

  202. that the consumeristic society that we live in

  203. and rub up against daily

  204. not only harms our souls,

  205. it harms our earth.

  206. It harms our lands.

  207. Many Christians have been sold a lie

  208. when we think the condition of our earth

  209. simply doesn't matter.

  210. I wish to be bold and say,

  211. yes, it does.

  212. It's a gospel issue as well.

  213. And it's not recycling or voting for the Greens

  214. that's going to solve this issue.

  215. It's the gospel that will solve it.

  216. For at the heart of the issue

  217. is a failed grasp,

  218. as we have already talked about,

  219. that it is God who provides and sustains life.

  220. People are abusing our earth

  221. and the land itself

  222. because ultimately they're scared

  223. that they won't have enough

  224. or they want more than they need.

  225. and they don't trust that God will provide for them.

  226. It's not the land itself,

  227. nor the people who work it,

  228. from which sustainability for life comes.

  229. It comes from the one

  230. who's at the center of everything,

  231. the Lord of life.

  232. As we live and exist in this world today,

  233. we ought to remember

  234. the ground and who it belongs to.

  235. It belongs to God, not ours.

  236. And He, the Lord,

  237. is at the center of everything.

  238. Everything that we enjoy

  239. producing the ground

  240. comes from Him

  241. who caused the ground to produce.

  242. The Sabbath year

  243. stops the Israelite people

  244. from getting out of control

  245. on their consumption

  246. and reminds them

  247. of their creational mandate

  248. to look after

  249. and to take care of the ground.

  250. It reminds them to trust the Lord

  251. who will provide for them

  252. even if in a whole year

  253. they don't work the ground.

  254. Indeed, as we read in chapter 25,

  255. God is gracious

  256. in His abundance towards them

  257. that they will have crop

  258. into the eighth and ninth year.

  259. We are called to represent Him well,

  260. not just in community,

  261. but in the way we look after

  262. and treat our earth.

  263. And so finally,

  264. from Leviticus 25,

  265. we see that Sabbath

  266. promotes

  267. the importance of rest

  268. and freedom

  269. as the goal of creation.

  270. The climax of Sabbath rest

  271. comes in verse 28.

  272. Count off seven Sabbath years,

  273. seven times seven,

  274. so that the seven Sabbath years

  275. amount to a period of 49 years.

  276. Then have the trumpet sound

  277. everywhere on the tenth day

  278. of the seventh month

  279. on the Day of Atonement.

  280. Sound the trumpet

  281. throughout your land.

  282. Consecrate the 50th year

  283. and proclaim liberty

  284. throughout the land

  285. to all its inhabitants.

  286. It shall be a jubilee for you.

  287. Each of you is to return

  288. to your family property

  289. and to your own clan.

  290. The 50th year

  291. shall be a jubilee for you.

  292. Do not sow

  293. and do not reap

  294. what grows of itself

  295. or harvest

  296. the unintended vines,

  297. for it is a jubilee

  298. and it is to be holy for you.

  299. Eat only what is taken

  300. directly from the fields.

  301. In this year of jubilee,

  302. everyone is to return

  303. to their property,

  304. their own property.

  305. The year of jubilee

  306. was the climactic celebration

  307. of the Sabbath.

  308. It encompassed elements

  309. of the yearly Sabbath

  310. and the weekly Sabbath

  311. by bringing an exciting

  312. new element as well.

  313. All your debts were cancelled.

  314. You had your property

  315. returned to you.

  316. If you were a hired worker

  317. or even a slave,

  318. you were freed.

  319. That sounds pretty good.

  320. The stipulations listed

  321. for jubilee, though,

  322. weren't just for the sake

  323. of everyone's individual joy

  324. so we could take

  325. what was ours

  326. and, yes,

  327. get it back, finally.

  328. Because it meant,

  329. for some,

  330. giving back

  331. and giving it up,

  332. losing their wealth.

  333. The day of jubilee

  334. was the great equaliser.

  335. Or as Von and I

  336. were discussing,

  337. she told me,

  338. it's the great reset button.

  339. For as years went on,

  340. some got richer

  341. and some got poorer.

  342. To allow that divide

  343. to get bigger

  344. and bigger

  345. was to run against

  346. the grain of creation

  347. that God had made us equal.

  348. And so,

  349. the return of property.

  350. Also,

  351. as years went on,

  352. these poor people

  353. may have had to

  354. sell themselves for work,

  355. sell their property

  356. to pay off debt

  357. and to become hired hands.

  358. And so,

  359. they were freed

  360. every 50 years

  361. of their bondage

  362. to debt and obligation.

  363. This day

  364. and year of jubilee

  365. remind the people

  366. that they were created

  367. by God

  368. and they were owned

  369. and belonged to God.

  370. That's the constant

  371. line we see in Exodus.

  372. I will be your God

  373. and you will be my people.

  374. that everything they have

  375. is actually His

  376. and it is His

  377. to give back freely.

  378. That anyone who works for them,

  379. indebted or even enslaved,

  380. is also God's.

  381. Indeed,

  382. as verse 54 says,

  383. even if someone

  384. is not redeemed

  385. in any of these ways,

  386. they and their children

  387. are to be released

  388. in the year of jubilee.

  389. They are my servants

  390. whom I brought

  391. out of Egypt.

  392. I am the Lord your God.

  393. The year of jubilee,

  394. this climactic

  395. Sabbath

  396. that happened every year,

  397. lived up

  398. to the idea

  399. of sacred assembly.

  400. It protested

  401. the idea

  402. that the nation

  403. of Israel

  404. ought to be built

  405. upon tribute

  406. and forced labor

  407. and state-imposed

  408. slavery,

  409. which was so prevalent

  410. in the nations

  411. surrounding them.

  412. No,

  413. it pointed to the people

  414. of God

  415. and to the nations

  416. around them.

  417. They were built

  418. upon the Lord God

  419. himself

  420. and upon

  421. his mercy

  422. and grace,

  423. upon his

  424. wonderful provision

  425. and that he would

  426. dwell with them.

  427. Our world

  428. is nothing like that.

  429. Our modern world

  430. is nothing like that.

  431. In little things,

  432. like if one is able

  433. to get into the city market

  434. alone

  435. and buy a house,

  436. you are obligated

  437. yourself to a near-life,

  438. longer payment of debt,

  439. which will never be wiped.

  440. The divide between rich

  441. and poor

  442. has never been greater

  443. than it is today

  444. and will continue to grow

  445. if generating

  446. more and more wealth

  447. is the goal

  448. of our society.

  449. Most of the clothes

  450. that we wear,

  451. we may not be aware,

  452. but are made

  453. in slave-like conditions,

  454. if not in slavery.

  455. I found out a few years ago

  456. that the cocoa industry,

  457. that is,

  458. to make chocolate,

  459. is rife with corruption

  460. and slavery.

  461. 80% of cocoa made

  462. in our world

  463. comes from one particular

  464. place in Africa

  465. and is one major supplier

  466. that most of our brands

  467. buy from,

  468. brands like Nestle,

  469. and they use child slaves

  470. to make and pick the cocoa.

  471. That's happening today.

  472. There's all kinds

  473. of slavery as well

  474. in the sex industry,

  475. in all kinds of places.

  476. The principle

  477. at the heart

  478. of these stipulations

  479. for the year of Jubilee

  480. was the law

  481. that summed up

  482. the entire law

  483. according to Jesus.

  484. Love the Lord

  485. with all your heart,

  486. mind,

  487. strength,

  488. and love your neighbor

  489. as yourself.

  490. It was a defining

  491. law for them

  492. that they wrote

  493. that into their

  494. moral code.

  495. And that's why

  496. they sought

  497. to look after the poor,

  498. to free the slayer.

  499. That's why

  500. every 50 years

  501. they had a year of Jubilee.

  502. If there was

  503. a defining law

  504. for us today

  505. it would be this,

  506. love yourself

  507. with all your heart,

  508. mind, and strength

  509. and love your neighbor

  510. if it benefits you.

  511. The whole point

  512. of these repetitive

  513. Sabbath celebrations

  514. in their various forms

  515. were not to stop

  516. this from happening.

  517. So it was to stop

  518. this from happening

  519. for Israel.

  520. That they would not

  521. end up loving themselves

  522. and only caring

  523. for themselves

  524. but they would live out

  525. a life of constant

  526. worship

  527. with God

  528. in his presence

  529. and looking out

  530. for the poor

  531. and those who were

  532. mistreated

  533. and the destitute.

  534. They would look

  535. after the land

  536. and they would live

  537. for God

  538. and obey him.

  539. Only then

  540. would they enjoy

  541. his presence

  542. and blessing.

  543. But it didn't

  544. take long

  545. for them

  546. to end up

  547. living lives

  548. that look

  549. totally radically

  550. different.

  551. To live

  552. individually

  553. and to live

  554. in a way

  555. that only

  556. benefits themselves.

  557. It didn't take long

  558. for their world

  559. to look like

  560. our world

  561. did today,

  562. does today.

  563. And therefore

  564. it did not take long

  565. for them to suffer

  566. the consequences

  567. where they were

  568. kicked out

  569. of the land

  570. into exile

  571. just as Adam

  572. and Eve

  573. were kicked

  574. out of the garden.

  575. But there is hope.

  576. Because Leviticus 25

  577. is not just

  578. a staving

  579. perhaps critique

  580. on our modern world

  581. and our ideas

  582. of rest

  583. and work

  584. but it also

  585. gives us

  586. an idea

  587. of God's

  588. intention

  589. to dwell

  590. with his people.

  591. He wants

  592. to rest

  593. and he wants

  594. us to rest

  595. with him.

  596. And it gives

  597. us a picture

  598. of how the gospel

  599. impacts our world

  600. and shapes

  601. our community.

  602. The gospel

  603. is not another

  604. festival

  605. or calendar

  606. law for Sabbath

  607. but it is the

  608. climax

  609. of all these

  610. things.

  611. As you've been

  612. reading it

  613. there's a big

  614. climax

  615. that's the

  616. weekly Sabbath

  617. and it's the

  618. seven yearly

  619. Sabbath

  620. and then after

  621. seven years

  622. Sabbath

  623. there's the

  624. year of Jubilee

  625. and then we get

  626. to the climax

  627. in the gospels

  628. where the

  629. Lord

  630. the Sabbath

  631. himself

  632. comes.

  633. Jesus

  634. to bring

  635. the kind

  636. of rest

  637. we've been

  638. hoping for

  639. here in

  640. Leviticus.

  641. Leviticus

  642. shows that

  643. it is in

  644. the gospel

  645. that we can

  646. rest from our

  647. work and rest

  648. in the work

  649. of Jesus

  650. to bring us

  651. into a

  652. relationship

  653. with the

  654. Father

  655. that all

  656. of us

  657. who are

  658. weary

  659. and burdened

  660. and heavy

  661. laden

  662. can enjoy

  663. the rest

  664. that Jesus

  665. offers

  666. when he

  667. says come

  668. to me

  669. and I'll

  670. give you

  671. rest for

  672. your souls.

  673. Leviticus

  674. shows that

  675. the gospel

  676. encompasses

  677. not only us

  678. as individuals

  679. or us

  680. as a community

  681. but the

  682. whole of

  683. creation

  684. a salvation

  685. that Jesus

  686. has come

  687. to bring

  688. is for

  689. the whole

  690. world

  691. it is

  692. cosmic

  693. in nature

  694. which is

  695. why creation

  696. looks forward

  697. to the

  698. children of

  699. God being

  700. revealed

  701. as Romans

  702. 8 says

  703. for that

  704. will be

  705. a time

  706. it will

  707. enjoy

  708. its own

  709. redemption

  710. and restoration

  711. as well

  712. and Leviticus

  713. shows us

  714. that the

  715. gospel is a

  716. call to

  717. freedom

  718. that we

  719. who were

  720. once slaves

  721. to sin

  722. now enjoy

  723. the wonderful

  724. freedom

  725. of the

  726. gospel

  727. having been

  728. redeemed

  729. by God

  730. through the

  731. blood

  732. of Jesus

  733. Jesus looks

  734. at his

  735. ministry

  736. as a kind

  737. of jubilee

  738. type

  739. when he

  740. reads from

  741. the scroll

  742. of Isaiah

  743. saying in

  744. Luke 4

  745. the spirit

  746. of the

  747. Lord is

  748. on me

  749. because he

  750. has anointed

  751. me to

  752. proclaim

  753. the good

  754. news

  755. to the

  756. poor

  757. he has

  758. sent me

  759. to proclaim

  760. freedom

  761. for the

  762. prisoners

  763. and recovery

  764. of sight

  765. for the

  766. blind

  767. to set

  768. the oppressed

  769. free

  770. to proclaim

  771. the year

  772. of the

  773. Lord's

  774. favour

  775. and then

  776. he sits

  777. down

  778. and he

  779. says

  780. this

  781. today

  782. this

  783. scripture

  784. has been

  785. fulfilled

  786. in your

  787. hearing

  788. the

  789. intentions

  790. of Leviticus

  791. to make

  792. a way

  793. for God's

  794. people to

  795. enjoy his

  796. presence

  797. is ultimately

  798. realised

  799. in Jesus

  800. it is he

  801. who fulfils

  802. the laws

  803. and requirements

  804. for the

  805. sabbath

  806. and allows

  807. for an

  808. ongoing

  809. eternal

  810. sabbath

  811. to happen

  812. in him

  813. for all

  814. who believe

  815. we don't

  816. need to do

  817. these laws

  818. in Leviticus

  819. to enjoy

  820. rest

  821. and the

  822. presence

  823. of God

  824. but what

  825. Leviticus

  826. does

  827. is it

  828. shows us

  829. what a

  830. gospel

  831. shaped

  832. community

  833. looks

  834. like

  835. a

  836. gospel

  837. shaped

  838. community

  839. doesn't

  840. allow

  841. work

  842. to

  843. consume

  844. them

  845. but

  846. stops

  847. in order

  848. to rest

  849. and remember

  850. the wonderful

  851. provision

  852. of the

  853. Lord

  854. almighty

  855. indeed

  856. a

  857. gospel

  858. shaped

  859. community

  860. in its

  861. desire

  862. and care

  863. to work

  864. for the

  865. creation

  866. is not

  867. to abuse

  868. it

  869. or to

  870. pillage

  871. it

  872. or to

  873. consume

  874. it

  875. but to

  876. look

  877. after

  878. it

  879. to take

  880. care

  881. of it

  882. to bear

  883. God's

  884. image

  885. as it's

  886. been

  887. worked

  888. representing

  889. its value

  890. well

  891. before all

  892. people

  893. in the

  894. wonderful

  895. glory

  896. of God

  897. and finally

  898. perhaps the

  899. most

  900. significant

  901. gospel

  902. shaping tool

  903. Leviticus

  904. offers us

  905. is that

  906. it is one

  907. of loving

  908. God

  909. and caring

  910. for the

  911. poor

  912. a

  913. community

  914. doesn't

  915. see

  916. themselves

  917. as better

  918. than the

  919. other

  920. but equal

  921. in Jesus

  922. who offers

  923. salvation

  924. to all

  925. a community

  926. doesn't

  927. abuse

  928. their power

  929. over people

  930. but who

  931. remembers

  932. that it is

  933. God

  934. who purchased

  935. and redeemed

  936. them

  937. from their

  938. sin

  939. a community

  940. that seeks

  941. to live

  942. in harmony

  943. with one

  944. another

  945. devoting

  946. themselves

  947. to the

  948. Lord

  949. in worship

  950. as they

  951. live out

  952. their lives

  953. in whatever

  954. it is

  955. that God

  956. has called

  957. them to do

  958. this

  959. is the

  960. shape

  961. of rest

  962. that

  963. Leviticus

  964. puts

  965. forward

  966. the

  967. shape

  968. of the

  969. gospel

  970. rest

  971. that we

  972. can

  973. enjoy

  974. from

  975. what does

  976. it look

  977. like

  978. to rest

  979. in God

  980. what does

  981. it look

  982. like to

  983. have

  984. Sabbath

  985. in Jesus

  986. it is

  987. to live

  988. as God's

  989. people

  990. in God's

  991. place

  992. enjoying

  993. his blessing

  994. and going

  995. out from

  996. here

  997. and serving

  998. him

  999. and loving

  1000. him

  1001. in wherever

  1002. he has

  1003. placed you

  1004. you

  1005. remain

  1006. faithful

  1007. and always

  1008. been

  1009. thankful

  1010. for what

  1011. he has

  1012. done

  1013. for you

  1014. seeing

  1015. every bit

  1016. of work

  1017. that you

  1018. have

  1019. your house

  1020. your car

  1021. the food

  1022. you eat

  1023. has been

  1024. provided

  1025. by him

  1026. and him

  1027. alone

  1028. that is

  1029. what it

  1030. looks like

  1031. to enjoy

  1032. Sabbath

  1033. rest

  1034. in Jesus

  1035. and that is

  1036. what Leviticus

  1037. 25

  1038. wants you

  1039. to see

  1040. here

  1041. but the

  1042. question

  1043. is

  1044. are we

  1045. such

  1046. a

  1047. community

  1048. do we

  1049. love

  1050. and remember

  1051. that it

  1052. is God

  1053. who provides

  1054. and therefore

  1055. the relativity

  1056. of work

  1057. do we

  1058. care for the

  1059. poor and the

  1060. destitute

  1061. in our

  1062. suburb

  1063. in our

  1064. city

  1065. do we

  1066. care for

  1067. our earth

  1068. that it

  1069. belongs to

  1070. God

  1071. and it's

  1072. created by

  1073. him

  1074. and given

  1075. to us

  1076. to take

  1077. care of

  1078. not to

  1079. consume

  1080. do we

  1081. not even

  1082. sometimes

  1083. share in

  1084. the guilt

  1085. of how

  1086. badly

  1087. we have

  1088. treated

  1089. it

  1090. and repent

  1091. of our

  1092. sin

  1093. do we

  1094. remember

  1095. that we

  1096. are not

  1097. of our

  1098. own

  1099. that we

  1100. were

  1101. bought

  1102. at a

  1103. price

  1104. and

  1105. therefore

  1106. hate

  1107. the

  1108. injustice

  1109. of

  1110. slavery

  1111. that we

  1112. see

  1113. in our

  1114. world

  1115. do we

  1116. see each

  1117. other

  1118. here

  1119. who have

  1120. come from

  1121. all kinds

  1122. of backgrounds

  1123. of all

  1124. ages

  1125. on the

  1126. same

  1127. level

  1128. enjoying

  1129. equality

  1130. and love

  1131. before

  1132. God

  1133. do we

  1134. continue

  1135. to repent

  1136. of our

  1137. sin

  1138. and seek

  1139. to live

  1140. in light

  1141. of this

  1142. gospel

  1143. Leviticus

  1144. asks these

  1145. questions of

  1146. us because

  1147. this is how

  1148. the gospel

  1149. impacts our

  1150. life

  1151. so in view

  1152. of all

  1153. this

  1154. has the

  1155. gospel

  1156. taken shape

  1157. in your

  1158. life in

  1159. such a

  1160. way

  1161. let's pray

  1162. heavenly

  1163. father

  1164. you

  1165. great

  1166. thanks

  1167. and

  1168. praise

  1169. that

  1170. although

  1171. we

  1172. are

  1173. sinful

  1174. you

  1175. graciously

  1176. provide

  1177. a way

  1178. for us

  1179. to come

  1180. to know

  1181. you

  1182. in your

  1183. presence

  1184. we

  1185. thank you

  1186. lord

  1187. for your

  1188. son

  1189. jesus

  1190. in whom

  1191. we

  1192. can

  1193. enjoy

  1194. an

  1195. eternal

  1196. sabbath

  1197. rest

  1198. beginning

  1199. now

  1200. and we

  1201. pray

  1202. father

  1203. that we

  1204. would not

  1205. think

  1206. lightly

  1207. on what

  1208. that

  1209. looks

  1210. like

  1211. but

  1212. that we

  1213. see

  1214. in

  1215. giving

  1216. us

  1217. rest

  1218. you

  1219. have

  1220. called

  1221. us

  1222. to live

  1223. the

  1224. life

  1225. that we

  1226. were

  1227. created

  1228. to live

  1229. to live

  1230. in

  1231. accordance

  1232. of your

  1233. creation

  1234. to live

  1235. in

  1236. accordance

  1237. of your

  1238. law

  1239. to live

  1240. in

  1241. accordance

  1242. of your

  1243. way

  1244. to love

  1245. those around

  1246. us

  1247. to seek

  1248. justice

  1249. for our

  1250. land and

  1251. for people

  1252. who don't

  1253. have it

  1254. to love

  1255. each other

  1256. and to

  1257. live

  1258. to serve

  1259. you

  1260. we pray

  1261. all this

  1262. in your

  1263. son's

  1264. name

  1265. amen
