  1. Father, thank you for your love for us in the Lord Jesus.

  2. Thank you for this passage.

  3. Lord, you need to break through so we can understand how deeply, deeply, deeply we need you.

  4. And what you've done to bring us home to you.

  5. So help us to come home to you today and we ask it for your sake.

  6. Amen.

  7. Many years ago, I worked at a place.

  8. It was one of the best jobs in the world as far as I was concerned.

  9. It was Mount Capitan National Park.

  10. I worked for the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

  11. And Mount Capitan's claim to fame is that it is the highest peak in Australia outside of the Snowy Mountains.

  12. It's not a massive claim to fame if you live in Europe, but it's a claim to fame.

  13. It's 1,510 metres above sea level.

  14. It's hardly even called a mountain, really.

  15. It's really a hill.

  16. But it's not so impressive.

  17. But what makes it impressive is it stands beside the total contrast of the northwest slopes and plains of New South Wales.

  18. Just 55 kilometres west of Mount Capitan is the town of Narrabri, where I grew up.

  19. And it stands at a staggering 200 metres above sea level.

  20. And it's on the edge of the vast plains of western New South Wales.

  21. And the contrast between Capitan and Narrabri is quite staggering and very significant.

  22. You see, the view from Narrabri is pretty pathetic, really.

  23. You can't really see anything at all.

  24. But on a good day, at the top of Mount Capitan, you can see 11% of New South Wales.

  25. That's even more than what you can see from the top of Mount Kosciuszko.

  26. Mount Capitan is at least 10 degrees cooler than Narrabri.

  27. And it got almost twice the amount of rain that Narrabri received.

  28. A wonderful oasis.

  29. And there is a similar staggering contrast when you look at the passages that Sam just read to us that's on our sheet this morning.

  30. The contrast is from death to life, from hell to heaven, from slavery to freedom, from pessimism to hope.

  31. It's a staggering contrast.

  32. The contrast from who we are without Jesus and who we are in Jesus.

  33. For those of us who have joined us for today, the theme over the past few weeks we've been working through here at St. Paul's is the journey home.

  34. And it might seem a bit strange, after several weeks into that theme, that my goal today is to take us back to the beginning.

  35. And where the journey begins.

  36. But Good Friday is where the journey begins.

  37. For all of us.

  38. And there are three things that I want you to see in these verses this morning from the Bible.

  39. Firstly, the journey that we need rescuing from.

  40. Secondly, the journey that we're rescued for.

  41. And thirdly, how you begin that journey home.

  42. So, first of all, the journey we need rescuing from.

  43. It's in verses 1 to 3.

  44. And it's really important as we get into this that if you've got an illness, you need a correct diagnosis.

  45. On the side here, I've got an insulin pump.

  46. I'm a diabetic.

  47. It's no good me going to a doctor and a doctor saying to me, what you need is some Panadol.

  48. You need to understand the illness you've got in order to get the correct medicine to deal with the disease you've got or the issue that you've got.

  49. And the first three verses are a comprehensive panoramic picture of the human condition outside of God.

  50. And it says quite bluntly, dead, dead in transgressions and sins.

  51. Now, the Apostle Paul, who wrote these words, is making an absolute statement.

  52. He doesn't mean that the Christians at Ephesus were merely in danger of death,

  53. but that they were in a state of real and present death before Jesus intervened.

  54. Death is not a figure of speech here.

  55. He's not using hyperbole.

  56. These people are absolutely dead.

  57. Now, although he speaks of Gentiles in verse 1,

  58. he includes his fellow Jews in verse 3.

  59. The state of spiritual death is universal, is what he's saying.

  60. He's not describing some decadent, depraved segment of society,

  61. but all of humanity from top to bottom,

  62. dead in transgressions and sins.

  63. All people are spiritually dead apart from Jesus.

  64. And when Paul says dead, he means it to have universal and an absolute application.

  65. No exceptions here.

  66. No exceptions.

  67. So what does it mean to be dead in transgressions and sins?

  68. After all, you know, look at us here today.

  69. You know, people whose bodies are active and minds are sharp

  70. and whose personalities are brimming.

  71. What does it mean?

  72. It means to be enslaved.

  73. Notice the word followed in verse 2,

  74. and it's there again in verse 3.

  75. It says in verse 2,

  76. you followed the ways of the world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air.

  77. And then again in verse 3, it says,

  78. gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts.

  79. And the word followed there means to be mastered.

  80. It means to be controlled by something.

  81. The reason we are dead in trespasses and sins

  82. is that we are as helpless as a dead body.

  83. Completely controlled.

  84. Totally mastered.

  85. Unable to move.

  86. Unable to act on our own.

  87. There are three things here that we are enslaved to.

  88. Verse 2, it says,

  89. we're enslaved to the ways of this world.

  90. Verse 2 also says that we're enslaved to the ruler of the kingdom of the air.

  91. That's talking about Satan, devil.

  92. This morning I want to notice just the key idea.

  93. It's in verse 3.

  94. Now, the term flesh there in verse 3 doesn't mean human flesh and bones.

  95. Like, you know, that stuff.

  96. It literally refers to self-centered human nature.

  97. It's the self-centered human nature which drives us,

  98. which masters us, which controls us.

  99. According to the Bible,

  100. the reason we are dead in trespassions and sins,

  101. the reason we are enslaved to sin,

  102. is because the human heart is profoundly self-centered.

  103. Every one of us.

  104. The 16th century church reformer and theologian Martin Luther

  105. put the condition of the human heart quite succinctly.

  106. He described it as curved in on itself.

  107. Curved in on itself.

  108. Absorbed in self.

  109. Looking inside self-centered.

  110. That is what it means to be human apart from God.

  111. And Luther said that our nature is so deeply curved in on itself

  112. that it, to quote him,

  113. wickedly, curvedly, and viciously,

  114. seeks to use all things, even God, for its own sake.

  115. It's like all of us had this little computer

  116. in the center of our heart

  117. that never, ever, ever stops.

  118. It is constantly analyzing everything,

  119. every person, every object,

  120. every interaction, every event,

  121. every setting.

  122. It's analyzing the basic question,

  123. what's in it for me?

  124. Everything is being analyzed

  125. by how it benefits my happiness,

  126. how it benefits my glory,

  127. how it benefits my comfort,

  128. my reputation,

  129. my control of all things.

  130. How does this help me?

  131. How does it serve my interests

  132. and fit my interests?

  133. How does this make me happy?

  134. Everything gets put through that grid

  135. and the computer never stops.

  136. Now, it's obvious to most of us, I think,

  137. that self-centeredness can make us a pretty cruel person.

  138. You know, it's not hard to identify the dictators

  139. and the tyrants who were egotistical and proud

  140. and self-centered and murderous

  141. and they want to get their own way

  142. and they will do whatever it takes,

  143. even immoral things,

  144. in order to get their own way.

  145. More often than not, though, however,

  146. self-centeredness actually makes you

  147. a really moral person.

  148. It makes you a good person.

  149. If everything is about my need

  150. to feel good about myself,

  151. then there is no better way

  152. for that to happen

  153. than for me to be a good person,

  154. a moral person.

  155. You see, self-centeredness drives most people

  156. towards attempting to live a good life,

  157. trying really hard to serve the needy,

  158. to be a good child to a parent,

  159. to honor my parents in some way,

  160. to be a good parent to my children,

  161. a good friend who assists wherever they possibly can,

  162. a good person,

  163. a dutiful person who does what's expected of them.

  164. And what lies beneath all of that

  165. is a self-centeredness

  166. where we do it for ourselves,

  167. where we do it to help ourselves.

  168. We do good things to be noticed by people,

  169. to receive the applause of people.

  170. It's so we can feel like we've got a meaningful life.

  171. We feel like we're a good person

  172. when we've got the acclaim of others.

  173. Now, I'm not sure if you remember

  174. one of the greatest Hollywood classics

  175. of the last century,

  176. the first Rocky movie,

  177. starring Sylvester Stallone.

  178. Now, quite frankly,

  179. he's an underrated actor

  180. who should have by now won an Academy Award.

  181. Nominated three times,

  182. pipped at the post each time.

  183. Poor guy.

  184. It's amazing he was nominated three times, frankly.

  185. His love interest in that movie

  186. asked him why he was fighting

  187. the world champion, Apollo Creed.

  188. It was a spectacle fight.

  189. He was not expected to win in any sort of way.

  190. And his reply,

  191. if you can get through the mumbling

  192. and get the translation right,

  193. his reply is,

  194. I want to go the distance.

  195. Then I'll know I'm not a bum.

  196. Now, deep down inside of us,

  197. if we ever allow ourselves to go

  198. to that recess of our hearts,

  199. we all feel like bums.

  200. We're trying to do something

  201. to convince ourselves

  202. and to convince the world

  203. that we're not

  204. and that we're good.

  205. And so we evaluate everything

  206. in terms of whether it makes me look good

  207. or whether it doesn't make me look good.

  208. Self-centeredness can make you a tyrant.

  209. Self-centeredness can make you

  210. a moral and a good person.

  211. But self-centeredness can almost,

  212. so make you a very religious person.

  213. We can devote ourselves to obeying God

  214. and turning up to church

  215. and reading the Bible

  216. and praying and giving

  217. and doing all the sorts of things

  218. that we've been doing right here,

  219. right now,

  220. all good things and right things to do.

  221. So how do I know

  222. when I'm doing it for me?

  223. When things aren't going well

  224. for you in life,

  225. you start to pull away

  226. from these good things.

  227. It's because you're doing these things

  228. in order to do,

  229. as Luther says,

  230. use God.

  231. We do good things

  232. and expect God to come through for us.

  233. Be generous to someone.

  234. God's going to be generous to me.

  235. It means it's all about us.

  236. It's awful to think about it,

  237. but it's possible to, in fact,

  238. even to get into Christianity

  239. to have God serve us

  240. rather than for us to serve God.

  241. It's astounding.

  242. Self-centeredness clings to everything

  243. in our lives

  244. like a rash.

  245. Verse 3 uses the word craving

  246. to describe our self-centeredness.

  247. It's a word that means inordinate desire.

  248. It means that our egos

  249. are addictive.

  250. The little computer is addictive.

  251. It means that we are living for our own glory

  252. and it will never be enough

  253. in the same way that a shot of heroin

  254. for an addict will never be enough.

  255. There's got to be more.

  256. The little computer in us

  257. is in overdrive,

  258. running evaluations,

  259. but no amount of glory,

  260. no amount of acclaim,

  261. recognition,

  262. comfort

  263. will ever be enough.

  264. It's addictive.

  265. And it's never satisfying.

  266. And it makes you miserable.

  267. C.S. Lewis,

  268. the Oxford professor

  269. and author,

  270. wrote that there is nothing more

  271. enslaving and miserable

  272. than self-centeredness.

  273. He wrote that it is hell

  274. begun in us

  275. that will eventually

  276. take us to hell

  277. because it's taking us

  278. towards the person

  279. that we are becoming.

  280. The ruler of the kingdom of the air

  281. as Ephesians 2 says.

  282. The framework that every human being

  283. begins with without Jesus

  284. is that if you,

  285. is that you

  286. give your life

  287. for me.

  288. It's me first.

  289. You serve my interests.

  290. That's even how we relate

  291. to our creator,

  292. our sustainer,

  293. our God.

  294. It's me first.

  295. And the Bible's view of sin

  296. is that every part

  297. of the human person

  298. is tainted by sin.

  299. It doesn't mean that humans

  300. are not capable

  301. of any good.

  302. It doesn't mean that

  303. there's no dignity

  304. in human beings.

  305. In fact,

  306. I would argue

  307. the Bible places

  308. more than any other world

  309. worldview,

  310. supreme value

  311. on human dignity.

  312. But it means

  313. that no part

  314. of the human being,

  315. the mind,

  316. the emotions,

  317. the heart,

  318. the will,

  319. is left untouched

  320. by sin and self-centeredness.

  321. And so the consequences

  322. at the end of verse 3

  323. is shocking

  324. to our modern context

  325. that says

  326. we want to be able

  327. to live how we want

  328. without any consequences.

  329. Not only dead,

  330. but condemned.

  331. That's the consequence.

  332. Not only dead,

  333. but condemned.

  334. Verse 3,

  335. like the rest,

  336. we were by nature

  337. deserving of wrath.

  338. That's God's anger.

  339. God's anger

  340. is not like human anger.

  341. It's not a bad temper.

  342. It's not spite.

  343. It's not malice.

  344. It's not animosity.

  345. It's not revenge.

  346. It's not arbitrary.

  347. It is predictable.

  348. And it's not governed

  349. by mood

  350. or by whim.

  351. It is God's personal,

  352. righteous,

  353. constant hostility

  354. towards all

  355. that is evil,

  356. unjust,

  357. and sin.

  358. It is his settled

  359. refusal

  360. to compromise

  361. with it

  362. and his resolve

  363. to condemn it.

  364. And that is

  365. the life journey,

  366. the trajectory

  367. that we are all on

  368. and that we need

  369. rescuing from.

  370. Now in a moment,

  371. I'm going to talk

  372. about how God

  373. saves us

  374. from that life.

  375. But first,

  376. I want to take us

  377. to the end

  378. of these verses

  379. where it talks briefly

  380. about the life

  381. that we are

  382. rescued for.

  383. This is the kind

  384. of life

  385. that God wants

  386. to give us

  387. and this is the life

  388. he wants to bring

  389. us into.

  390. Starting at verse 8,

  391. for it is by grace

  392. you have been saved

  393. through faith.

  394. This is not

  395. from yourselves.

  396. It is a gift

  397. from God,

  398. not by work

  399. so that no one

  400. can boast.

  401. For we are

  402. God's handiwork

  403. created in Christ

  404. Jesus to do good

  405. works which God

  406. prepared in advance

  407. for us to do.

  408. Now there are a couple

  409. of fascinating terms

  410. right in there.

  411. The first is in verse 8,

  412. it is by grace

  413. you've been saved

  414. through faith

  415. and this is not

  416. from yourselves,

  417. as a gift

  418. from God.

  419. It is saying

  420. that we are not

  421. saved,

  422. we do not

  423. give ourselves

  424. the evaluation

  425. of being a good

  426. person by doing

  427. good things

  428. and being moral.

  429. We are not saved

  430. by anything

  431. that we do.

  432. God's salvation,

  433. his gift

  434. is a gift.

  435. This new life

  436. that he wants

  437. to bring us into

  438. is a gift

  439. and once we get

  440. this gift

  441. we start to see

  442. everything in life

  443. as a gift.

  444. It's not my

  445. entitlement,

  446. it's not there

  447. to serve me.

  448. Even faith

  449. is something

  450. that God gives us.

  451. The life

  452. that God

  453. wants us to have

  454. is a life

  455. where we see

  456. everything as a gift.

  457. It's not a life

  458. where we divide

  459. the world up to

  460. into makers

  461. and takers

  462. to quote

  463. a taxi driver

  464. that we had

  465. in the United States.

  466. Everything

  467. is a gift.

  468. We don't

  469. deserve anything.

  470. It's a life

  471. that is lived

  472. through faith

  473. as we're told

  474. here

  475. and faith

  476. isn't just

  477. about intellectual

  478. belief.

  479. It means that

  480. but it means

  481. much more

  482. than that.

  483. Faith

  484. means trust.

  485. It means

  486. resting.

  487. See,

  488. a Christian person

  489. is a person

  490. who's at rest.

  491. They are

  492. characterised

  493. by what

  494. verse 9

  495. says,

  496. no longer

  497. boasting.

  498. They're not

  499. boasting

  500. anymore.

  501. Now,

  502. when we hear

  503. the word

  504. boast,

  505. we hear

  506. bragging.

  507. You know,

  508. look at the

  509. things I've

  510. done and

  511. achieved.

  512. Now,

  513. boasting

  514. meant something

  515. a bit

  516. different

  517. and probably

  518. more profound

  519. in the first

  520. century.

  521. Boasting

  522. for them

  523. was to

  524. give yourself

  525. confidence,

  526. to gee

  527. yourself up,

  528. to face

  529. something really

  530. hard.

  531. That's what

  532. boasting

  533. was in the

  534. first century.

  535. So,

  536. imagine a

  537. military leader

  538. got his

  539. troops there,

  540. rallying his

  541. troops,

  542. getting them

  543. pumped up

  544. because they're

  545. about to run

  546. in and face

  547. death.

  548. He would

  549. stand there

  550. and he'd

  551. boast,

  552. look at the

  553. size of

  554. our spears,

  555. weeny little

  556. spears,

  557. these guys,

  558. and look at

  559. how many guys

  560. we've got.

  561. They've only

  562. got a few

  563. over there.

  564. Look at

  565. our tactics.

  566. We've been

  567. winning all,

  568. our tactics

  569. are much

  570. better than

  571. their tactics.

  572. The soldiers

  573. would go,

  574. yeah,

  575. grab these

  576. spears,

  577. yeah,

  578. I'm going

  579. to die.

  580. That's what

  581. boasting

  582. is.

  583. This is the

  584. sense here.

  585. The boasting

  586. here is

  587. about

  588. where your

  589. confidence

  590. is placed.

  591. And we

  592. are told

  593. here that

  594. one of the

  595. great things

  596. about the

  597. Christian life

  598. is it

  599. brings to

  600. an end

  601. of all

  602. boasting

  603. in self

  604. and into

  605. placing my

  606. confidence

  607. in my

  608. fickle

  609. personal

  610. hope that

  611. I'm trying

  612. to build

  613. for myself.

  614. everyone

  615. is looking

  616. around for

  617. something to

  618. boast in,

  619. to have

  620. confidence in,

  621. to trust in,

  622. to rest in,

  623. in order to

  624. face life.

  625. Everyone is

  626. trying to find

  627. something to

  628. give us that

  629. sense of

  630. value,

  631. that sense

  632. of worth.

  633. Some of us

  634. look to

  635. careers,

  636. some of us

  637. look to

  638. our family,

  639. some of us

  640. look to

  641. salaries,

  642. some of us

  643. look to

  644. moral decency,

  645. some of us

  646. look to

  647. religious

  648. performance.

  649. A life

  650. looking at

  651. things to

  652. boast in is

  653. a life

  654. that's

  655. scrambling,

  656. scrambling

  657. for identity,

  658. scrambling

  659. for self

  660. worth,

  661. and it

  662. is

  663. exhausting.

  664. And as

  665. C.S.

  666. Lewis says,

  667. it makes you

  668. miserable.

  669. And the

  670. new life

  671. that God

  672. gives us

  673. is a gift,

  674. and because

  675. it's a gift,

  676. we are set

  677. free from

  678. that,

  679. liberated from

  680. trying to

  681. find our

  682. boast,

  683. trying to

  684. find our

  685. confidence,

  686. from within

  687. ourselves to

  688. pin our

  689. hopes on,

  690. and in

  691. verse 10

  692. it says

  693. this wonderful

  694. vision of

  695. the new

  696. life,

  697. he says,

  698. we are

  699. God's

  700. handiwork,

  701. created in

  702. Christ Jesus

  703. to do

  704. good works,

  705. which God

  706. prepared in

  707. advance for

  708. us to

  709. do.

  710. In the

  711. old life,

  712. we are

  713. dead in

  714. our sins,

  715. but the

  716. new life

  717. is described

  718. as God's

  719. handiwork,

  720. we are

  721. his artwork,

  722. his

  723. masterpiece.

  724. No longer

  725. dead,

  726. but instead

  727. remade,

  728. set free to

  729. do good

  730. works without

  731. the constant

  732. calculation of

  733. whether I've

  734. done enough

  735. to get the

  736. applause that

  737. I so

  738. desperately

  739. desire.

  740. God's

  741. greatest

  742. masterpiece is

  743. humanity

  744. saved from

  745. condemnation,

  746. made alive and

  747. set free from

  748. slavery.

  749. The old life

  750. means we work

  751. hard in the

  752. hope of getting

  753. the applause,

  754. the praise of

  755. the praiseworthy,

  756. the new life

  757. because we have

  758. the praise of

  759. the most

  760. praiseworthy

  761. already.

  762. We are set

  763. free to serve

  764. and love with

  765. free abandon.

  766. So we've

  767. seen the

  768. life that we

  769. need to be

  770. saved from

  771. and the

  772. life that we

  773. are saved

  774. for.

  775. So how do

  776. we begin

  777. this journey?

  778. Where does

  779. it start?

  780. And the

  781. answer to

  782. that is

  783. both profound

  784. and simple.

  785. It says in

  786. verses 4 to 7

  787. that God has

  788. done something

  789. incredible in

  790. Jesus.

  791. It says,

  792. because of his

  793. great love for

  794. us,

  795. God who is

  796. rich in

  797. mercy made

  798. us alive

  799. with Christ

  800. even when we

  801. were dead in

  802. transgressions.

  803. It is by

  804. grace you've

  805. been saved.

  806. And God

  807. raised us up

  808. with Christ

  809. and seated us

  810. with him in

  811. the heavenly

  812. realms in

  813. Christ Jesus.

  814. Notice the

  815. last verse in

  816. verse 6.

  817. God has

  818. raised us up

  819. with Christ

  820. and seated us

  821. with him in

  822. the heavenly

  823. realms.

  824. Now the

  825. first recipients

  826. of this

  827. letter knew

  828. exactly what

  829. that meant

  830. in the

  831. Roman world.

  832. You see,

  833. in the first

  834. century Roman

  835. world,

  836. the conquering

  837. war,

  838. the general

  839. would return

  840. from a great

  841. victory and

  842. he was given

  843. as a reward

  844. the greatest

  845. place of

  846. honour in the

  847. capital city.

  848. And that is

  849. the seat

  850. beside the

  851. throne of the

  852. emperor.

  853. right hand

  854. seat.

  855. Jesus died,

  856. he was

  857. raised again

  858. and he was

  859. given the

  860. place of

  861. greatest honour,

  862. the seat on

  863. the right hand

  864. throne in the

  865. heaven.

  866. It can't

  867. mean that we

  868. are raised

  869. from dead

  870. literally

  871. because I

  872. don't think

  873. that I've

  874. died just

  875. yet.

  876. I'm jet

  877. lagged but

  878. I'm not

  879. dead.

  880. It can't

  881. mean that

  882. I'm in

  883. heaven because

  884. I'm still

  885. here.

  886. It doesn't

  887. mean that we

  888. are literally

  889. seated with

  890. him there

  891. just yet.

  892. It means

  893. that we are

  894. legally seated

  895. with him

  896. there right

  897. now in

  898. Jesus.

  899. You see,

  900. when you

  901. believe in

  902. Jesus,

  903. all your

  904. sins are

  905. so hidden,

  906. they are

  907. so covered

  908. that you

  909. are treated

  910. as if you

  911. have done

  912. everything

  913. that Jesus

  914. has ever

  915. done.

  916. Through

  917. Jesus,

  918. God delights,

  919. he honours,

  920. he accepts

  921. and he

  922. rejoices over

  923. us in the

  924. way that he

  925. has his

  926. perfect

  927. obedient son.

  928. How can

  929. that be when

  930. we have

  931. been so,

  932. so self-centered?

  933. The key

  934. there is in

  935. verse 7,

  936. he might

  937. show the

  938. incomparable

  939. riches of

  940. his grace

  941. expressed in

  942. his

  943. kindness

  944. to us

  945. in Christ

  946. Jesus.

  947. The word

  948. kindness

  949. there of

  950. Christ

  951. Jesus

  952. literally

  953. means a

  954. costly

  955. action.

  956. It's more

  957. than just

  958. saying,

  959. you know,

  960. I love

  961. you.

  962. It is

  963. putting your

  964. money where

  965. your mouth

  966. is,

  967. as we say,

  968. or for

  969. Jesus'

  970. sake,

  971. it is

  972. putting his

  973. life where

  974. his mouth

  975. is.

  976. The first

  977. three verses

  978. tell us

  979. that the

  980. essence of

  981. sin,

  982. which is the

  983. reason why

  984. we are

  985. dead,

  986. is putting

  987. ourselves

  988. where only

  989. God should

  990. be,

  991. the center

  992. of our

  993. lives,

  994. on the

  995. throne of

  996. our lives,

  997. in control

  998. of our

  999. lives.

  1000. That is

  1001. what sin

  1002. is,

  1003. is putting

  1004. ourselves

  1005. where only

  1006. God

  1007. deserves

  1008. to be.

  1009. Salvation,

  1010. according to

  1011. the Christian

  1012. faith,

  1013. is the

  1014. exact opposite.

  1015. And salvation

  1016. is God

  1017. putting himself

  1018. where we

  1019. deserve to

  1020. be,

  1021. on the

  1022. cross.

  1023. That's

  1024. what Good

  1025. Friday is

  1026. all about.

  1027. Jesus took

  1028. the just

  1029. and the

  1030. righteous

  1031. punishment

  1032. from God

  1033. that we

  1034. deserve for

  1035. putting

  1036. ourselves

  1037. in the

  1038. place where

  1039. only God

  1040. belongs,

  1041. on the

  1042. throne as

  1043. rulers of

  1044. our lives.

  1045. The punishment

  1046. he took on

  1047. the cross

  1048. was much

  1049. more than

  1050. the cruel

  1051. and the

  1052. excruciating

  1053. physical

  1054. punishment

  1055. of

  1056. crucifixion.

  1057. It was

  1058. a cruel

  1059. way to

  1060. die.

  1061. He took

  1062. the wrath

  1063. of God

  1064. that verse

  1065. 3 says

  1066. we deserve.

  1067. He was

  1068. cut off

  1069. from his

  1070. father and

  1071. he experienced

  1072. the agony

  1073. that we

  1074. would experience

  1075. if we were

  1076. cut off

  1077. from God

  1078. for all

  1079. of eternity.

  1080. And I

  1081. cannot

  1082. imagine,

  1083. even begin

  1084. to imagine

  1085. what that

  1086. was like

  1087. for him.

  1088. He sat

  1089. in our

  1090. seat so

  1091. that we

  1092. now can

  1093. sit in

  1094. his seat.

  1095. One

  1096. person put

  1097. it so,

  1098. so succinctly,

  1099. the essence

  1100. of sin

  1101. is us

  1102. substituting

  1103. ourselves for

  1104. God,

  1105. while the

  1106. essence of

  1107. salvation

  1108. is God

  1109. substituting

  1110. himself for

  1111. us.

  1112. And that's

  1113. what Good

  1114. Friday is

  1115. all about.

  1116. We have

  1117. put ourselves

  1118. where only

  1119. God deserves

  1120. to be and

  1121. so God

  1122. chooses to

  1123. put himself

  1124. where we

  1125. deserve to

  1126. be.

  1127. And so

  1128. the way

  1129. to be

  1130. blasted

  1131. out of

  1132. our

  1133. self-centeredness

  1134. is to

  1135. see that

  1136. Jesus saved

  1137. us by

  1138. doing the

  1139. exact opposite

  1140. of us.

  1141. He saved

  1142. us through

  1143. the most

  1144. radically

  1145. unselfish

  1146. thing anyone

  1147. has ever

  1148. done.

  1149. Though he

  1150. is equal

  1151. with God,

  1152. he emptied

  1153. himself of

  1154. his glory,

  1155. he came

  1156. down,

  1157. he took

  1158. our place

  1159. as a

  1160. servant,

  1161. he traded

  1162. his life

  1163. for ours,

  1164. and the

  1165. contrast of

  1166. these verses

  1167. is startling.

  1168. The very

  1169. next words

  1170. after verse

  1171. 3 that

  1172. says that

  1173. we are

  1174. deserving of

  1175. God's

  1176. wrath says,

  1177. but because

  1178. of his

  1179. great love

  1180. for us,

  1181. God who

  1182. is rich

  1183. in mercy

  1184. made us

  1185. alive with

  1186. Christ.

  1187. Even when

  1188. we were

  1189. dead in

  1190. transgressions,

  1191. it's by

  1192. grace you've

  1193. been saved.

  1194. We were

  1195. dead in

  1196. our

  1197. transgressions,

  1198. but God

  1199. intervened.

  1200. We were

  1201. bondage to

  1202. sin, but

  1203. God intervened.

  1204. We were

  1205. objects of

  1206. wrath, but

  1207. God intervened.

  1208. God who

  1209. is rich in

  1210. mercy intervened.

  1211. Our condition

  1212. was hopeless,

  1213. but God

  1214. intervened in

  1215. grace.

  1216. From hell to

  1217. heaven, from

  1218. bondage to

  1219. freedom, from

  1220. gloom to

  1221. light, from

  1222. despair to

  1223. hope, from

  1224. wrath to

  1225. glory, from

  1226. death to

  1227. life, that

  1228. is the

  1229. glory and

  1230. the magnificence

  1231. of Good

  1232. Friday.

  1233. That's why

  1234. it's called

  1235. Good Friday.

  1236. And when

  1237. we see him

  1238. doing that,

  1239. when we know

  1240. he has done

  1241. that, when

  1242. we see his

  1243. mercy, his

  1244. love, his

  1245. grace, then

  1246. it helps us to

  1247. see that our

  1248. sense of who

  1249. we are is

  1250. already filled

  1251. up.

  1252. You can

  1253. disconnect the

  1254. computer.

  1255. His

  1256. selflessness has

  1257. overcome our

  1258. selfishness.

  1259. We see

  1260. ourselves as

  1261. complete because

  1262. we are seated

  1263. with God in the

  1264. place of honour.

  1265. We have all the

  1266. acclaim, all the

  1267. honour, all the

  1268. approval, all the

  1269. acceptance that you

  1270. could possibly want.

  1271. There is only one

  1272. boast that will

  1273. stop all boasting.

  1274. One boast that

  1275. stops us scrambling

  1276. through life trying

  1277. to figure out a

  1278. way to find the

  1279. confidence that we

  1280. need in order to

  1281. face life, whatever

  1282. it's going to throw

  1283. at us.

  1284. And it's the same

  1285. Apostle Paul who

  1286. wrote in Galatians

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  1287. chapter 6,

1288. may I never boast in

  1289. anything else but

  1290. the cross of our

  1291. Lord Jesus Christ

  1292. through which the

  1293. world has been

  1294. crucified to me and

  1295. I to the world.

  1296. Now I'm assuming

  1297. that there are some

  1298. people in this room

  1299. today and you may

  1300. even have been a

  1301. regular in this

  1302. church for decades

  1303. but you need to

  1304. start that journey

  1305. today.

  1306. The journey needs to

  1307. begin for you today.

1308. You need to get off

1309. one road and on to

  1310. the other.

  1311. You need to switch

  1312. roads, stop looking

  1313. to self, start looking

  1314. to God and whatever

  1315. you've done, whatever

  1316. you've become on this

  1317. good Friday,

  1318. day Jesus has

  1319. possible for you to

  1320. come home to him.

  1321. Make this good Friday

1322. the day that you come

  1323. to Jesus and experience

1324. his love and his grace

1325. and his mercy the day

1326. you go from hell to

  1327. heaven, from bondage to

  1328. freedom, from gloom to

  1329. light, from despair to

  1330. hope, from glory to

  1331. wrath, from death to

  1332. life.

  1333. Sorry, from wrath to

  1334. glory, death to life.

  1335. If that's you, then

  1336. there's a really

  1337. crucial prayer for you

1338. on the back of our

  1339. service sheet.

  1340. It's called the

  1341. prayer for belief.

  1342. I want to encourage

  1343. everyone to pick one

  1344. up.

1345. Pick one up and look

1346. at that prayer at the

1347. end of the back of the

  1348. service sheet.

  1349. It's really simple.

1350. Lord Jesus, I admit that

  1351. I'm weaker and more

  1352. sinful than I've ever

  1353. dared to admit, but

  1354. through you I'm more

  1355. loved and accepted than

1356. I ever dared to hope.

1357. I thank you for praying

1358. my debt on the cross,

1359. taking what I deserve in

  1360. order to offer me

  1361. complete forgiveness,

  1362. knowing that you've been

  1363. raised from the dead.

1364. I turn from my sins and

1365. receive you as my Lord

  1366. and Saviour.

  1367. Amen.

  1368. We're going to, Sam's

1369. going to lead us right

  1370. now.

  1371. Come on up, Sam.

1372. He's going to lead us

  1373. into the Lord's Supper

  1374. right now, which is

  1375. again a reminder of

1376. what Christ has done for

  1377. us.

1378. And as he does that, as

1379. we go through this, can

1380. I just encourage you to

1381. ponder over the words of

  1382. that prayer and whether

1383. or not that prayer is a

1384. prayer for you to pray

1385. today and to begin the

  1386. journey to follow

  1387. Jesus.
