  1. When I was about 15 in high school, so I'd been a Christian for about a year,

  2. I had the chance to be trained in sharing the good news of Jesus.

  3. I was trained to do a spiel, can't even have a better word,

  4. and a hundred point outline of the gospel.

  5. There was a hundred different stories, memory verses, illustrations,

  6. points to go through.

  7. And the point was I could articulate start to finish somebody who needed to meet Jesus

  8. to would you like to become a Christian.

  9. Now, as a side point, I'm not sure you need an a hundred point presentation.

  10. I think we can maybe do it with a few less, but it was the one that I learned anyway as a 15 year old,

  11. and it was a good one.

  12. But this presentation would always begin with two what we call diagnostic questions.

  13. Questions that were supposed to help you figure out where the person was

  14. in terms of what they knew about God, what they were trusting in, that sort of thing.

  15. The first question was,

  16. if you were to die tonight, are you certain you would go to heaven?

  17. And the second, it's quite morbid in hindsight,

  18. suppose you did die tonight,

  19. and you appeared before God, and he asked you,

  20. why should I let you into my heaven?

  21. What would you say?

  22. I remember as a teenager finding those questions really heavy,

  23. and so to try and lighten the mood,

  24. you would improv a little bit in the second question,

  25. and I'd be like, you know, suppose you did die tonight,

  26. you know, you got hit by a bus, or something like that,

  27. which didn't really lighten it, but that was my attempt to go,

  28. I'm actually asking you a really, really serious question here

  29. about life and death, something that really matters.

  30. And on one level, these questions are really quite simple,

  31. but at the same time, they're quite profound.

  32. And I wonder for you, if I was to ask you those questions,

  33. not in front of everyone, not with everyone eavesdropping,

  34. but just we were to have a chat, and I was to ask you those questions,

  35. what would your answer be?

  36. If I was to ask you, if you were to die tonight,

  37. how certain are you that you would go to heaven?

  38. And if you did rock up at the gates to heaven,

  39. and God's there, and he says, why should I let you in?

  40. What would your response be?

  41. See, these questions reveal a whole lot

  42. about what it is that we're trusting in.

  43. The things that we would hand over to God

  44. as the basis for letting us into heaven,

  45. but also, just how confident we are

  46. that those things are actually going to deliver.

  47. Just how much we actually believe these things

  48. that we would present to God would be a convincing resume.

  49. These questions show us not just if we're confident,

  50. but what we're trusting in,

  51. and whether or not, deep down,

  52. we actually know that those things can come through for us.

  53. Now, the most interesting thing for me in this whole process was,

  54. when I couldn't find somebody to share the gospel with,

  55. to help me practice my 100 points that I had to memorize,

  56. I would make my friends sit down with me

  57. so that I could go through my big presentation.

  58. And it was always interesting to me

  59. to hear what my friends who went to church with me

  60. would say when asked those two questions.

  61. It wasn't always the same.

  62. On one end, you had the people who were certain

  63. that they were going to heaven,

  64. but were trusting in flimsy things.

  65. They were certain they were going to get into heaven,

  66. but they were trusting in how much better they were

  67. than most people in the world.

  68. Or they were trusting in the fact that they'd been baptized once.

  69. Or they were trusting in the fact that

  70. their parents worked at the church.

  71. Down the other end, you had those who were uncertain,

  72. really wanted to go to heaven,

  73. but couldn't say certain,

  74. but were trusting in the unbreakable promises of God

  75. to get them there.

  76. And then you had everything in between on the spectrum.

  77. Now, the point being that not everyone

  78. who wants certainty when it comes to heaven,

  79. not everyone who wants that kind of guarantee,

  80. wants to be able to answer with an emphatic yes

  81. to that first question,

  82. actually gets it.

  83. And in reality, some of the people who say

  84. that they're certain probably shouldn't be.

  85. Even though God's word promises peace

  86. that passes understanding,

  87. even though God's word speaks of an immovable hope,

  88. in the passage just read out for us,

  89. in Hebrews 10, it talks about confidence

  90. to enter the most holy place.

  91. Sometimes it's easier to talk about confidence,

  92. to talk about certainty,

  93. than it is to know it,

  94. to feel it,

  95. to believe it.

  96. Martin Luther, who was one of the key figures

  97. in the Reformation 500 years ago,

  98. was a man who was acutely aware of God's holiness

  99. in stark contrast to his own sin.

  100. It's said that having become a monk,

  101. he would often hog his confession opportunities

  102. and would stay in the confessional booth

  103. for up to six hours at a time

  104. to just recount as many of his sins

  105. as he could possibly remember.

  106. He was a man who was soaking in God's word,

  107. he was studying it,

  108. he was meditating on it,

  109. and yet he was somebody who lived his life

  110. crushed by the weight of his own sin

  111. and guilt and failure.

  112. He knew that God demanded perfection

  113. and it was that unattainable goal

  114. that cast a shadow over his life.

  115. And even having dedicated his life

  116. to being a monk,

  117. to serving God,

  118. the security he so desperately wanted

  119. continued to elude him.

  120. And he's not alone.

  121. Maybe that's how you feel.

  122. Maybe you're doing lots of things

  123. to serve God.

  124. Maybe you're trying very hard

  125. to be the person that you know

  126. he wants you to be

  127. because you desperately want to know

  128. for certain that when you die

  129. you will get to go to heaven.

  130. But it feels like the harder you try,

  131. the less certain you feel.

  132. Last week, Steve mentioned briefly

  133. about the sale of indulgences.

  134. These were effectively papal pardons

  135. for sin.

  136. That is, the Pope would give these things out

  137. as a kind of pardon

  138. for the sin that you had done.

  139. And in the time of the Reformation,

  140. these had begun to be sold for money

  141. as a fundraiser for building projects

  142. and stuff like that.

  143. Effective for building projects

  144. but probably not really helpful

  145. for everyone else.

  146. These indulgences were then

  147. subcontracted out to priests

  148. who would travel around

  149. and give people the chance

  150. to confess sin

  151. and then essentially buy forgiveness.

  152. That's how the system worked.

  153. Now, a really key reason

  154. that something as ridiculous

  155. as that happened

  156. was what we looked at last week.

  157. That really the priests

  158. were the only ones

  159. who had access to the Bible.

  160. Unless you had been through university

  161. and studied Latin,

  162. you had no idea

  163. what God said in his word

  164. and so who were you to argue?

  165. You just took their word for it.

  166. All you knew

  167. is that you were sinful,

  168. God was holy,

  169. God was just

  170. and you needed help.

  171. But there's a second

  172. really important reason

  173. that this all happened.

  174. There's a second reason

  175. that we need to grasp

  176. as we reflect on the Reformation

  177. 500 years later.

  178. See, the problem

  179. that required the Reformation,

  180. the thing that needed change,

  181. wasn't the Catholic Church itself.

  182. Now, it was the context for it.

  183. It was the place

  184. where the issue

  185. got institutionalized,

  186. but it wasn't the problem itself.

  187. The core problem

  188. was sinful people.

  189. And I'm not even talking

  190. about the active sin

  191. of the fact that

  192. they were trying, you know,

  193. to pervert the truth of God

  194. and take advantage

  195. of insecure people.

  196. Although that's true

  197. and that was there.

  198. See, the problem then

  199. wasn't that they didn't know

  200. they were sinful.

  201. Of course they did.

  202. That's what made people insecure.

  203. The problem

  204. was that they didn't understand

  205. just how fundamental

  206. their sin was.

  207. They didn't understand

  208. how inherent their sin was,

  209. how deeply inside

  210. of a person

  211. sin exists.

  212. And so the solutions

  213. they would come up with,

  214. the security

  215. they would reach out for

  216. was only of a surface level,

  217. only of a superficial.

  218. And the surface level solution

  219. that the Catholic Church

  220. came up with

  221. was a thing called

  222. penance.

  223. Penance had three steps.

  224. You confess,

  225. you show contrition,

  226. and then you do satisfaction.

  227. So,

  228. you steal some bread.

  229. You confess to the priest

  230. that you stole some bread.

  231. You be contrite.

  232. That is,

  233. you actually mean

  234. your sorry confession

  235. and you plan

  236. to not do it again.

  237. And then,

  238. you do some satisfaction,

  239. which basically means

  240. you give some money

  241. to the poor,

  242. you spend some time

  243. in prayer and fasting,

  244. you make a trip to Rome,

  245. a bit of a pilgrimage,

  246. something like that.

  247. Essentially,

  248. your ledger with God

  249. is in the negative,

  250. so do some good stuff

  251. to get you back

  252. in the positive.

  253. That was the answer.

  254. And there's some logic

  255. to this system.

  256. There's even some

  257. rightness in it.

  258. I mean,

  259. confession is a good gift

  260. from God.

  261. You don't need a priest,

  262. but confession itself

  263. is a good thing

  264. because it reflects

  265. that we're understanding

  266. sin is actually serious.

  267. You've actually got to

  268. do something with sin.

  269. It needs to be dealt with.

  270. Contrition,

  271. of course.

  272. You've got to be genuine

  273. when you confess.

  274. You can't just say the words

  275. and not mean it.

  276. We want to be genuine

  277. in seeking God's forgiveness.

  278. And even the idea

  279. of satisfaction,

  280. that third bit,

  281. the idea that having

  282. done something wrong

  283. towards God,

  284. there should be

  285. some payment

  286. or some restitution,

  287. makes sense.

  288. But when the payment

  289. that you owe God

  290. for sin

  291. is something trivial

  292. like money,

  293. or something temporary

  294. like a few hours fasting,

  295. or a trip to St. Peter's

  296. in Rome,

  297. all it shows

  298. is that

  299. we haven't really

  300. understood sin

  301. at all.

  302. We haven't actually

  303. understood

  304. how big an issue

  305. it is,

  306. how close to us

  307. it is.

  308. It's just a thing

  309. that's been done

  310. and so it's a

  311. good thing

  312. that can be done

  313. to balance it out.

  314. It's just a

  315. superficial solution.

  316. And the result

  317. back then

  318. was a church

  319. full of

  320. petrified people.

  321. People who are aware

  322. that they were sinful,

  323. they knew that,

  324. but they are imprisoned

  325. by these temporary,

  326. ritualistic,

  327. resource-based

  328. solutions.

  329. Their forgiveness

  330. at any given moment,

  331. their security

  332. to say,

  333. I'm certain

  334. I'm going to be

  335. in heaven,

  336. was only ever

  337. partial.

  338. And in some cases

  339. it was limited

  340. to how much

  341. money they had

  342. to buy that

  343. forgiveness.

  344. And so the answer

  345. for the average

  346. churchgoer

  347. back then

  348. to that second

  349. diagnostic question

  350. would have been

  351. about how many

  352. indulgences they had,

  353. how many trips

  354. to Rome they'd made,

  355. how much money

  356. they'd given

  357. to the poor,

  358. how many times

  359. a week they were

  360. fasting and praying,

  361. which was such

  362. an inadequate answer.

  363. Even the church

  364. knew it was

  365. an inadequate answer,

  366. they invented

  367. a theology

  368. of purgatory.

  369. Purgatory

  370. essentially exists

  371. as the place,

  372. they believe,

  373. the place between

  374. this life and heaven

  375. where you settle

  376. the accounts

  377. that you didn't

  378. have a chance

  379. to settle

  380. in this life.

  381. So it's like,

  382. here's our solution.

  383. Do good stuff

  384. to make up

  385. for your bad stuff,

  386. but you'll never

  387. be able to do

  388. enough good stuff,

  389. so we're going

  390. to invent

  391. another space

  392. that the Bible

  393. doesn't talk about

  394. where you can

  395. keep doing good stuff.

  396. In some cases

  397. they thought people

  398. were going to be

  399. in there for

  400. thousands of years

  401. trying to catch up

  402. for all their bad stuff

  403. because their solution

  404. was inadequate.

  405. See,

  406. on one level

  407. they knew it

  408. and yet

  409. this was the cycle,

  410. this was the trap,

  411. this was the prison

  412. that people lived in,

  413. a prison of fear.

  414. And then,

  415. while soaking in God's word,

  416. the reformers

  417. saw Jesus,

  418. saw him for who

  419. he really is,

  420. saw him for what

  421. he had actually done,

  422. saw him for what

  423. he was doing

  424. and is doing

  425. even now

  426. and it changed

  427. everything.

  428. Now it's not that

  429. the Catholic church

  430. back then

  431. didn't believe

  432. in Jesus,

  433. it's just that

  434. they weren't seeing

  435. him clearly enough.

  436. They weren't seeing

  437. him the way

  438. he's revealed himself

  439. in his word.

  440. Even now today

  441. it feels like

  442. when we say

  443. we believe in Jesus

  444. we need to clarify

  445. that because

  446. it's almost not enough

  447. because lots of people

  448. say they believe in Jesus

  449. but they don't all

  450. mean the same thing.

  451. I've had people

  452. come to my house

  453. and knock on my door,

  454. Mormons,

  455. you know,

  456. white shirts,

  457. name tags

  458. and they try and convince

  459. me they believe in Jesus

  460. and I try and explain

  461. to them that the Jesus

  462. that you believe in

  463. is not the Jesus

  464. that the Bible talks

  465. about who I believe in.

  466. Sometimes just to say

  467. you believe in Jesus

  468. is not enough.

  469. If you desire

  470. true salvation,

  471. if you desire

  472. the kind that gives

  473. peace and security

  474. and purpose

  475. and direction

  476. then you need to know

  477. who Jesus

  478. really is.

  479. you need to know

  480. what the Bible says

  481. about Jesus

  482. because it all

  483. stands or falls

  484. on Jesus.

  485. Everything.

  486. And so we need to look

  487. to the ultimate source

  488. of authority,

  489. the place that Steve

  490. took us last week,

  491. the place that the

  492. Reformers went

  493. 500 years ago,

  494. the place where God

  495. promises to speak to us

  496. in His Word

  497. to us,

  498. the Bible.

  499. So what does it say?

  500. Well, quite a bit.

  501. Every page is about Jesus.

  502. But let's look at

  503. two specific things

  504. in this passage

  505. from Hebrews 10

  506. that the Bible

  507. definitely says

  508. about Jesus

  509. that we need to grab.

  510. First one.

  511. Jesus does

  512. what you can't.

  513. So again,

  514. Jesus does

  515. what you can't.

  516. He's perfect.

  517. perfect.

  518. This has been the issue

  519. since Adam and Eve

  520. in the Garden of Eden.

  521. Since the moment

  522. where Adam and Eve

  523. decided that they knew

  524. better than God

  525. and they were going to

  526. do things their own way,

  527. God is pure

  528. and perfect

  529. and He demands

  530. the same of His people.

  531. And so from that

  532. point in time,

  533. there has been

  534. this gap

  535. that no one of us

  536. has ever been able

  537. to bridge.

  538. And that gap

  539. is essentially

  540. perfection.

  541. perfection.

  542. That's what

  543. God requires.

  544. That's the standard

  545. He expects.

  546. That's what He's asking for.

  547. So before Jesus came,

  548. God provided His law

  549. with sacrifices

  550. and rituals

  551. and there was contrition

  552. and there was confession

  553. and all those bits

  554. were in there.

  555. But even that

  556. was never going to fix

  557. this issue.

  558. I mean,

  559. have a look at

  560. Hebrews 10 verse 1.

    Hebrews 10:1

  561. The law is only

  562. a shadow

  563. of the good things

  564. that are coming,

  565. not the realities

  566. themselves.

  567. For this reason,

  568. it can never

  569. by the same sacrifices

  570. repeated endlessly

  571. year after year

  572. make perfect

  573. those who draw

  574. near to worship.

  575. Can't do it.

  576. Otherwise,

  577. would they not have

  578. stopped being offered?

  579. For the worshippers

  580. would have been cleansed

  581. once and for all

  582. and would no longer

  583. have felt guilty

  584. for their sins.

  585. But those sacrifices

  586. are an annual

  587. reminder of sins.

  588. It is impossible

  589. for the blood

  590. of bulls

  591. and goats

  592. to take away sins.

  593. None of it

  594. made anyone perfect.

  595. This huge chunk

  596. in the Old Testament

  597. which tells Israel

  598. exactly how they

  599. should live,

  600. which tells them

  601. exactly how they

  602. should worship,

  603. which tells them

  604. exactly how they

  605. should gather,

  606. none of it

  607. made anyone

  608. perfect.

  609. And that's what

  610. needs to happen.

  611. If people are going

  612. to be certain

  613. about heaven,

  614. if people are going

  615. to know God,

  616. if people are going

  617. to have a relationship

  618. with Him,

  619. the issue is

  620. they're not perfect

  621. and so the solution

  622. is they need to be

  623. made perfect.

  624. That's the core issue.

  625. That's why we fumble

  626. with that first question.

  627. That's why that word

  628. certain makes us

  629. feel so uncomfortable

  630. because anyone

  631. with even the slightest

  632. bit of self-awareness

  633. knows that perfect

  634. is not them.

  635. And so we feel

  636. uncomfortable

  637. because God

  638. does require that.

  639. And even if the

  640. sacrifices that He

  641. describes in the law

  642. had been able to

  643. pay for past sins,

  644. which they couldn't,

  645. but even if they

  646. had been able to do

  647. that, if they were

  648. able to wipe the

  649. slate clean,

  650. it doesn't change

  651. the fact that

  652. people are sinful.

  653. That sin runs

  654. deeper.

  655. So even if we

  656. could do the

  657. sacrifices and

  658. wipe the slate

  659. clean, as soon

  660. as it's clean,

  661. we've already

  662. dirtied it again.

  663. As soon as the

  664. accounts to zero,

  665. we've already

  666. started accumulating

  667. debt again

  668. because it's us

  669. who are sinful.

  670. Sin comes from

  671. within us

  672. and so something

  673. else is needed.

  674. A better solution

  675. is required.

  676. Therefore,

  677. verse 5,

  678. Therefore,

  679. when Christ came

  680. into the world,

  681. He said,

  682. Sacrifice and

  683. offering you did

  684. not desire,

  685. but a body you

  686. prepared for me.

  687. With burnt

  688. offerings and sin

  689. offerings you were

  690. not pleased.

  691. Then I said,

  692. Here I am.

  693. It is written

  694. about me in the

  695. scroll.

  696. I have come to

  697. do your will,

  698. my God.

  699. First,

  700. He said,

  701. sacrifice and

  702. offerings,

  703. burnt offerings,

  704. and sin offerings

  705. you do not

  706. desire,

  707. nor were you

  708. pleased with

  709. them,

  710. though they

  711. were offered

  712. in accordance

  713. with the law.

  714. Then He said,

  715. Here I am.

  716. I have come

  717. to do your

  718. will.

  719. He sets aside

  720. the first to

  721. establish the

  722. second,

  723. and by that

  724. will we've

  725. been made

  726. holy through

  727. the sacrifice

  728. of the body

  729. of Jesus

  730. Christ once

  731. for all.

  732. Jesus came

  733. to do what

  734. we couldn't.

  735. Jesus came

  736. to provide

  737. the perfection

  738. that was

  739. required.

  740. He came

  741. to do

  742. the perfect

  743. obedience

  744. that we

  745. were falling

  746. short on.

  747. Verse 9,

  748. Here I am.

  749. I have come

  750. to do

  751. your will.

  752. Perfect

  753. obedience

  754. was required,

  755. and in

  756. Jesus,

  757. perfect

  758. obedience

  759. was provided.

  760. The only

  761. place anyone

  762. will ever

  763. find the

  764. perfection

  765. that God

  766. demands of

  767. them

  768. is in

  769. Jesus,

  770. in his

  771. perfect

  772. life,

  773. in his

  774. perfect

  775. death.

  776. In fact,

  777. that's the

  778. whole reason

  779. he came.

  780. Now,

  781. let me just

  782. slow down

  783. here for a

  784. second.

  785. Jesus

  786. didn't come

  787. to be

  788. perfect for

  789. you because

  790. it was

  791. difficult and

  792. he wanted

  793. to make it

  794. easier.

  795. he didn't

  796. come because

  797. you were

  798. close and

  799. you would

  800. have got

  801. there

  802. eventually,

  803. but he

  804. just wanted

  805. to help

  806. you along.

  807. Jesus

  808. does it

  809. because it's

  810. impossible

  811. for you

  812. to do it.

  813. There is

  814. no chance

  815. that anyone

  816. could ever

  817. make this

  818. standard.

  819. Isaiah

  820. tells us

  821. that even

  822. our righteous

  823. acts are

  824. like filthy

  825. rags before

  826. God.

  827. that our

  828. best attempts

  829. are almost

  830. offensive to

  831. him.

  832. And yet

  833. sometimes

  834. we treat

  835. Jesus and

  836. his perfect

  837. obedience like

  838. it's the

  839. top up for

  840. our almost

  841. perfect

  842. obedience.

  843. We don't

  844. see him as

  845. the solution

  846. to our

  847. impossible

  848. problem.

  849. We see

  850. him as the

  851. icing on

  852. our pretty

  853. reasonable

  854. cake.

  855. But the

  856. Bible says

  857. about Jesus

  858. that he's

  859. doing what

  860. we couldn't

  861. do.

  862. He's the

  863. only perfect

  864. one.

  865. That's the

  866. first thing.

  867. The second

  868. thing is

  869. that Jesus

  870. takes what

  871. you deserve.

  872. Two things

  873. are needed

  874. if we're

  875. going to

  876. grab hold

  877. of this

  878. perfection

  879. that we

  880. need to.

  881. we need

  882. this new

  883. perfect

  884. record that

  885. Jesus has

  886. established by

  887. living a

  888. perfect life

  889. but we

  890. still need to

  891. deal with the

  892. consequence of

  893. our sin.

  894. We still need

  895. to deal with

  896. the right

  897. judgment that

  898. God has for

  899. the times that

  900. we ignore him

  901. and dishonor him

  902. and don't love

  903. him the way he

  904. deserves.

  905. But Jesus

  906. takes that as

  907. well.

  908. verse 10

  909. by that

  910. will we've

  911. been made

  912. holy through

  913. the sacrifice

  914. of the body

  915. of Jesus

  916. Christ once

  917. for all.

  918. Day after

  919. day every

  920. priest stands

  921. and performs

  922. his religious

  923. duties again

  924. and again he

  925. offers the

  926. same sacrifices

  927. which can

  928. never take

  929. away sins

  930. but when

  931. this priest

  932. Jesus had

  933. offered for

  934. all time one

  935. sacrifice for

  936. sins he sat

  937. down at the

  938. right hand of

  939. God and since

  940. that time he

  941. waits for his

  942. enemies to be

  943. made his

  944. footstool for

  945. by one

  946. sacrifice he

  947. has made

  948. perfect forever

  949. those who are

  950. being made

  951. holy.

  952. One

  953. sacrifice

  954. sufficient for

  955. all sins

  956. past present

  957. and future

  958. the perfect

  959. son of God

  960. the innocent

  961. son of God

  962. killed in the

  963. place of guilty

  964. ones

  965. killed in our

  966. place

  967. peace.

  968. The prophet

  969. Isaiah

  970. describes it

  971. vividly in

  972. chapter 53

  973. it says

  974. surely he

  975. took up our

  976. pain and

  977. bore our

  978. suffering yet

  979. we considered

  980. him punished

  981. by God

  982. stricken by

  983. him and

  984. afflicted but

  985. he was

  986. pierced for

  987. our transgressions

  988. he was

  989. crushed for

  990. our iniquities

  991. the punishment

  992. that brought

  993. us peace

  994. was on

  995. him and

  996. by his

  997. wounds we

  998. are healed

  999. we all like

  1000. sheep have

  1001. gone astray

  1002. each of us

  1003. has turned to

  1004. our own way

  1005. and the Lord

  1006. has laid on

  1007. him the

  1008. iniquity of

  1009. us all

  1010. Jesus death

  1011. on the cross

  1012. was the once

  1013. for all

  1014. sufficient

  1015. payment for

  1016. sin

  1017. it was the

  1018. one time

  1019. payment that

  1020. keeps the

  1021. debt at

  1022. zero no

  1023. matter how

  1024. many times

  1025. you stuff

  1026. up

  1027. it removed

  1028. every possible

  1029. barrier between

  1030. us and

  1031. God and

  1032. replaced those

  1033. barriers with

  1034. the perfect

  1035. obedience of

  1036. Jesus

  1037. it's what we

  1038. sometimes call

  1039. the great

  1040. exchange

  1041. Jesus takes

  1042. what we

  1043. deserve

  1044. he takes

  1045. our wrath

  1046. he takes

  1047. our judgment

  1048. he fully

  1049. satisfies God

  1050. by dying in

  1051. our place

  1052. and then in

  1053. exchange

  1054. he gives us

  1055. his perfect

  1056. report card

  1057. he gives us

  1058. his perfect

  1059. obedience

  1060. and now he

  1061. can sit at

  1062. the right hand

  1063. of God in

  1064. heaven

  1065. guaranteeing

  1066. that his

  1067. life lived

  1068. for us

  1069. his death

  1070. died in

  1071. our place

  1072. makes it

  1073. possible

  1074. for people

  1075. like you and

  1076. me to hear

  1077. the words

  1078. that should

  1079. be reserved

  1080. just for

  1081. Jesus

  1082. words like

  1083. this is my

  1084. son whom

  1085. I love

  1086. and with

  1087. him I am

  1088. well pleased

  1089. this is my

  1090. daughter whom

  1091. I love

  1092. with her I

  1093. am well

  1094. pleased

  1095. Jesus is the

  1096. only place

  1097. where sinful

  1098. people can

  1099. find hope

  1100. he's the

  1101. only chance

  1102. that we

  1103. have to

  1104. know the

  1105. perfect God

  1106. of all

  1107. creation

  1108. as our

  1109. heavenly

  1110. father

  1111. Christ

  1112. alone

  1113. can do

  1114. what is

  1115. needed

  1116. Christ

  1117. alone

  1118. does what

  1119. you could

  1120. not

  1121. and takes

  1122. what you

  1123. deserve

  1124. and that's

  1125. why Acts

  1126. 4 says

  1127. salvation is

  1128. found in

  1129. no one

  1130. else

  1131. for there

  1132. is no

  1133. other name

  1134. under heaven

  1135. given to

  1136. mankind

  1137. by which

  1138. we must

  1139. be saved

  1140. the issue

  1141. for many

  1142. of us

  1143. when it

  1144. comes to

  1145. being able

  1146. to answer

  1147. that first

  1148. question with

  1149. a confident

  1150. yes

  1151. comes back

  1152. to that

  1153. system of

  1154. penance

  1155. confession

  1156. is a good

  1157. and right

  1158. response

  1159. when God

  1160. shows us

  1161. that we're

  1162. not the

  1163. people we

  1164. need to

  1165. be

  1166. contrition

  1167. is a

  1168. necessary

  1169. part of

  1170. that genuine

  1171. confession

  1172. but it's the

  1173. satisfaction

  1174. bit where

  1175. we go

  1176. wrong

  1177. satisfaction

  1178. needs to

  1179. happen

  1180. but the

  1181. only

  1182. satisfaction

  1183. that leads

  1184. to assurance

  1185. is trusting

  1186. in the

  1187. satisfaction

  1188. that Jesus

  1189. has done

  1190. trusting in

  1191. the payment

  1192. that Jesus

  1193. has made

  1194. for our

  1195. sin

  1196. there's a

  1197. chance that

  1198. if you're

  1199. somebody who

  1200. doesn't feel

  1201. particularly

  1202. secure when

  1203. it comes

  1204. to heaven

  1205. if you're

  1206. somebody who

  1207. struggles with

  1208. the certainty

  1209. that God

  1210. speaks of in

  1211. his word

  1212. and promises

  1213. is available

  1214. through his

  1215. son

  1216. there's a

  1217. chance that

  1218. you're doing

  1219. the confession

  1220. bit maybe

  1221. you're doing

  1222. the contrition

  1223. bit but it's

  1224. when it gets

  1225. the satisfaction

  1226. that you're

  1227. tempted to do

  1228. maybe Jesus

  1229. and yeah

  1230. I trust

  1231. Jesus but I

  1232. feel the need

  1233. to do a bit

  1234. of the work

  1235. myself

  1236. the only

  1237. place you're

  1238. going to find

  1239. certainty is

  1240. him because

  1241. the only place

  1242. you're going to

  1243. find perfection

  1244. which is what

  1245. is required

  1246. is him

  1247. and all you

  1248. do when you

  1249. try and add

  1250. to his

  1251. perfection is

  1252. dilute it

  1253. you unperfect

  1254. it

  1255. if you're

  1256. somebody in

  1257. this room

  1258. who is not

  1259. following Jesus

  1260. if you're not

  1261. a Christian

  1262. if you're not

  1263. somebody who

  1264. has gone

  1265. through that

  1266. process of

  1267. recognizing that

  1268. you need

  1269. God's help

  1270. if you're ever

  1271. going to know

  1272. him

  1273. you need

  1274. his help

  1275. if you're

  1276. ever going

  1277. to be in

  1278. heaven

  1279. if you're

  1280. not somebody

  1281. who has

  1282. asked for

  1283. the forgiveness

  1284. that Jesus

  1285. purchased by

  1286. dying on the

  1287. cross in

  1288. your place

  1289. I want to

  1290. tell you

  1291. that the

  1292. offer of

  1293. forgiveness

  1294. the offer

  1295. of certainty

  1296. of hope

  1297. of peace

  1298. is there

  1299. for you

  1300. right now

  1301. tonight

  1302. because Jesus

  1303. has done

  1304. what you

  1305. cannot do

  1306. he has taken

  1307. what you

  1308. deserve

  1309. and he is

  1310. offering

  1311. to forgive

  1312. you

  1313. to restore

  1314. you

  1315. and to

  1316. begin the

  1317. work of

  1318. preparing

  1319. you for

  1320. heaven

  1321. here's the

  1322. question we

  1323. need to

  1324. finish with

  1325. does this

  1326. still matter

  1327. surely

  1328. you know

  1329. we're a

  1330. bible

  1331. believing

  1332. church

  1333. this was

  1334. a drastic

  1335. discovery

  1336. 500 years

  1337. ago but

  1338. we know

  1339. it's

  1340. Christ

  1341. alone

  1342. I mean

  1343. Steve

  1344. even mentioned

  1345. it last

  1346. week

  1347. you might

  1348. be really

  1349. clever

  1350. and even

  1351. be able

  1352. to say

  1353. solus

  1354. Christus

  1355. which is

  1356. what the

  1357. reformers

  1358. would have

  1359. said

  1360. so surely

  1361. we don't

  1362. need to

  1363. cover this

  1364. we know

  1365. Jesus is

  1366. the only

  1367. way we

  1368. can be

  1369. saved

  1370. we talk

  1371. about this

  1372. every week

  1373. at church

  1374. was this

  1375. really worth

  1376. 27 minutes

  1377. of our

  1378. time

  1379. well maybe

  1380. why did

  1381. why did

  1382. what the

  1383. entire

  1384. church

  1385. in the

  1386. 15th

  1387. century

  1388. who knew

  1389. what God

  1390. had done

  1391. in Jesus

  1392. on the

  1393. cross

  1394. end up

  1395. so

  1396. fatally

  1397. misled

  1398. why do

  1399. you and

  1400. I need

  1401. to hear

  1402. this

  1403. the answer

  1404. is

  1405. sin

  1406. it was

  1407. the problem

  1408. then

  1409. and it's

  1410. the problem

  1411. now

  1412. we need to

  1413. understand

  1414. that the

  1415. issue here

  1416. is not

  1417. that it's

  1418. confusing

  1419. God has

  1420. laid it

  1421. out

  1422. he said

  1423. trust in

  1424. Jesus

  1425. just pick up

  1426. this solution

  1427. it's here

  1428. I've done

  1429. all the work

  1430. it's right

  1431. there

  1432. just take

  1433. it

  1434. and yet

  1435. our default

  1436. setting

  1437. is to

  1438. not do

  1439. that

  1440. our default

  1441. setting

  1442. is to

  1443. take what

  1444. God has

  1445. idiot proofed

  1446. for us

  1447. and make

  1448. it not

  1449. work

  1450. our default

  1451. setting

  1452. is to

  1453. hear God

  1454. say I

  1455. love you

  1456. in spite

  1457. of who

  1458. you are

  1459. and then

  1460. feel this

  1461. need to

  1462. be somebody

  1463. who's

  1464. worthy

  1465. of God's

  1466. love

  1467. our default

  1468. setting

  1469. is to

  1470. move in

  1471. the opposite

  1472. direction

  1473. of the

  1474. certainty

  1475. that God

  1476. has offered

  1477. by doing

  1478. what you

  1479. can't

  1480. and taking

  1481. what you

  1482. deserve

  1483. and sending

  1484. his son

  1485. to die

  1486. in your

  1487. place

  1488. on the

  1489. cross

  1490. we need

  1491. to be

  1492. reminded

  1493. that it's

  1494. only in

  1495. Jesus

  1496. because when

  1497. I asked you

  1498. at the

  1499. beginning of

  1500. this

  1501. whether or

  1502. not you're

  1503. certain

  1504. you're going

  1505. to heaven

  1506. most if

  1507. not all

  1508. of us

  1509. were hesitant

  1510. about the

  1511. word

  1512. certain

  1513. that's

  1514. what

  1515. Jesus

  1516. offers

  1517. and so

  1518. we need

  1519. to come

  1520. back

  1521. now

  1522. we need

  1523. to recognize

  1524. that this

  1525. is a battle

  1526. going on

  1527. in our

  1528. hearts

  1529. and that

  1530. salvation

  1531. is only

  1532. found in

  1533. Jesus

  1534. not in

  1535. the extra

  1536. ministry

  1537. that you're

  1538. doing

  1539. not in

  1540. your

  1541. incredible

  1542. godly

  1543. character

  1544. even

  1545. though

  1546. that

  1547. might

  1548. be

  1549. true

  1550. Jesus

  1551. is not

  1552. the top

  1553. up

  1554. he's

  1555. the

  1556. exchange

  1557. he's

  1558. the

  1559. substitute

  1560. and in

  1561. him

  1562. and him

  1563. alone

  1564. can we

  1565. find

  1566. certainty

  1567. certainty

  1568. is the

  1569. debt

  1570. that we

  1571. owe to

  1572. the

  1573. protestant

  1574. reformation

  1575. the

  1576. possibility

  1577. of

  1578. assurance

  1579. and

  1580. security

  1581. in

  1582. Jesus

  1583. was

  1584. all

  1585. but

  1586. lost

  1587. prior

  1588. to

  1589. the

  1590. reformation

  1591. but

  1592. thank

  1593. god

  1594. 500

  1595. years

  1596. ago

  1597. some

  1598. people

  1599. opened

  1600. their

  1601. bibles

  1602. and

  1603. rediscovered

  1604. it

  1605. rediscovered

  1606. security

  1607. and peace

  1608. forgiveness

  1609. grace

  1610. hope

  1611. love

  1612. and all

  1613. of it

  1614. in

  1615. Jesus

  1616. alone

  1617. and only

  1618. in

  1619. Jesus

  1620. alone

  1621. Jesus

  1622. has done

  1623. what you

  1624. cannot

  1625. he has

  1626. taken

  1627. what you

  1628. deserve

  1629. and he

  1630. invites you

  1631. to rest

  1632. securely

  1633. in that

  1634. heart

  1635. and there

  1636. you

  1637. know
