  1. During a conference quite a number of years ago now on comparative religions,

  2. experts from around the world debated what belief, if any belief, was unique to the Christian faith.

  3. And they began by eliminating a bunch of possibilities.

  4. The incarnation.

  5. They thought, no, actually other religions have different versions of their gods appearing in the world in human form to people.

  6. So what about resurrection?

  7. Again, other religions had accounts of people returning back from death.

  8. And the debate went on for some time until the Oxford Don C.S. Lewis walked into the room

  9. and in his classic C.S. Lewis style said, so what's all this rumpus about?

  10. And when he heard that they were debating the unique contribution of Christianity and had for some time,

  11. Lewis just responded, just jumped on it.

  12. He said, well, that's easy.

  13. It's grace.

  14. Grace.

  15. And after some discussion, the conference agreed.

  16. The notion of God's love coming to humanity free of charge, no strings attached,

  17. goes against every world religion and every instinct of humanity.

  18. There's the Buddhist eightfold path.

  19. There's the Hindu doctrine of karma, the Jewish covenant, the Muslim code of law.

  20. Each of these offers a way to earn approval or to stay in approval.

  21. Only Christianity dares to declare God's love as unconditional.

  22. You can't earn it.

  23. It's not yours by right.

  24. You don't deserve it.

  25. You don't ever deserve it.

  26. Now, grace is a word that's familiar to our ears.

  27. Grace.

  28. It can be a person's name.

  29. It can be an attitude, a gracious attitude.

  30. It can be a prayer that you say before dinner if you're not terribly hungry.

  31. It's even a name of a hotel in Sydney.

  32. Ironically, however, there are no free rooms.

  33. The word grace in the Greek New Testament is the word charis.

  34. And it's a holy Christian word.

  35. It was a word.

  36. The word charis was unknown in Greek or Roman ethics and theology before Christianity.

  37. This doctrine of grace gave rise to a new word for grace.

  38. Grace in Christianity is a personal activity of God.

  39. God operates in unconditional love towards people.

  40. Grace is generosity.

  41. It's when something is given purely out of the goodness and the kindness of the giver,

  42. despite the unworthiness of the recipient.

  43. And salvation in Christianity is a work of God, not people.

  44. It's a work of God from beginning to end,

  45. and is given freely and undeservedly through Jesus Christ,

  46. as we just sang in three songs to kick our service off.

  47. And this was the rediscovery or one of the rediscoveries of the Protestant Reformation,

  48. the 16th century, that has come down to us over these 500 years.

  49. As we started this series off,

  50. salvation is according to Scripture alone,

  51. in Christ alone, by grace alone,

  52. through faith alone, for the glory of God alone.

  53. That is our heritage.

  54. It's St. Paul's, and it's where we take our stand as a church today.

  55. And in the past two weeks,

  56. we've been reminded of two key foundations so far

  57. to biblical Christianity that were rediscovered in the Reformation 500 years ago.

  58. Scripture alone, that is,

  59. it's not the Bible plus the traditions

  60. and the authority of the church and reason and experience.

  61. And it's Christ alone,

  62. not Jesus plus human priests and the sacrifice of the mass.

  63. And next week, we're going to explore faith alone.

  64. It's not faith in Jesus plus good works for the basis of my salvation.

  65. And to these, the reformers added grace alone.

  66. And in a sense, grace alone summarizes and explains

  67. the two that we've already done,

  68. the one we're going to do next week.

  69. The Bible, the Word of God,

  70. comes to us from outside of us.

  71. It stands as a gracious gift of God to humanity.

  72. It's God communicating to us

  73. because without it, we would not see or know God.

  74. And Jesus Christ alone is the way to God.

  75. And Jesus again comes from outside of us,

  76. purely and only because of the kindness and love of God.

  77. We don't earn him.

  78. We don't contribute to his work

  79. or help him finish off what he lacked.

  80. Jesus does everything through the generosity of God.

  81. Even the ability, this is what we're going to see next week,

  82. even the ability to see and to trust in God,

  83. as we just read in Ephesians 2,

  84. is a gift of God itself.

  85. Our response is nothing more than an open hand,

  86. held out in trust,

  87. that says thank you

  88. to the wonderful promises of God.

  89. The grace of God is love freely shown

  90. towards guilty sinners,

  91. contrary to their merit,

  92. and in fact in defiance of their demerit.

  93. You see, the context of the Reformers

  94. rediscovering grace alone in the Bible

  95. was a church that believed in grace.

  96. That's the context.

  97. It was a church that actually believed in grace.

  98. You see, Roman Catholic teaching states

  99. that God's grace is God's free favour

  100. and generosity towards sinners.

  101. grace is God's free.

  102. But,

  103. and in this case,

  104. the word but says everything.

  105. It is also,

  106. grace is also a kind of power or assistance

  107. in which God gives us

  108. to help people to respond to him

  109. and help people live through life.

  110. And that's,

  111. the word but,

  112. is where it goes wrong.

  113. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church,

  114. it reads,

  115. we can merit for ourselves

  116. and for others

  117. the graces needed

  118. for sanctification,

  119. for the increase of grace

  120. and for charity

  121. and for the attainment

  122. of eternal life.

  123. What that means

  124. is that salvation

  125. in all its different forms

  126. becomes a cooperation

  127. between us and God.

  128. This view of grace

  129. is built on a particular view of humanity.

  130. A view that says

  131. that people are sinful.

  132. Yeah, yeah,

  133. we're all broken,

  134. we're all sinful,

  135. but we are still capable

  136. as human beings

  137. of reaching out to God

  138. and communicating with God

  139. and with his assistance

  140. turning our life around.

  141. But,

  142. so,

  143. for us to understand,

  144. therefore,

  145. what grace is,

  146. we need to go back to the Bible

  147. and embrace

  148. and see

  149. the need

  150. of grace alone.

  151. For us to be able to do that,

  152. we need an accurate diagnosis

  153. of the actual human condition.

  154. And if we hold to

  155. what I preached on two weeks ago

  156. about Scripture alone

  157. being authority

  158. and not my experience of the world

  159. or not my feelings about myself

  160. or anything else,

  161. that if that is our authority,

  162. then we need to hear what it says.

  163. And the right diagnosis

  164. was just read out to us.

  165. This is the human condition,

  166. Ephesians 2 verse 1.

    Ephesians 2:1

  167. As for you,

  168. you were dead

  169. in your transgressions

  170. and sins

  171. in which you used to live

  172. when you followed

  173. the ways of this world

  174. and of the ruler

  175. of the kingdom of the air,

  176. the spirit who is now at work

  177. in those who are disobedient.

  178. All of us also lived among them

  179. at one time,

  180. gratifying and cravings

  181. of our sinful nature

  182. and following us desires

  183. and thoughts

  184. and like the rest,

  185. we were by nature

  186. objects of wrath.

  187. Or we also see the diagnosis

  188. in Romans 3 verses 10 to 12.

    Romans 3:10–12

  189. There is no one righteous,

  190. not even one.

  191. There is no one who understands.

  192. There is no one who seeks God.

  193. All have turned away.

  194. They have altogether

  195. become worthless.

  196. There is no one

  197. who does good,

  198. not even one.

  199. That's the authority

  200. of Scripture's perspective

  201. on the human condition.

  202. No one righteous,

  203. no one who seeks God,

  204. worthless,

  205. dead,

  206. left to our own devices.

  207. We are dead

  208. in our sins.

  209. And the core nature

  210. of humanity

  211. is not that we are

  212. basically good,

  213. it's that we're actually

  214. fundamentally bad.

  215. We are spiritually bankrupt.

  216. We are spiritually dead.

  217. dead.

  218. And dead people

  219. don't respond

  220. to anything.

  221. I've,

  222. in my job,

  223. I've done a lot of funerals

  224. over the years

  225. and a number of those funerals

  226. have been open coffin funerals.

  227. And it's an awkward thing

  228. if you've ever had that experience

  229. where the funeral director

  230. tells you,

  231. which I'm assuming you haven't,

  232. the funeral director

  233. tells you,

  234. we're going to have

  235. an open coffin

  236. and your job

  237. is to stand beside the coffin

  238. and sort of be there

  239. for people as they come.

  240. And more often than not,

  241. no one really wants

  242. to get there early

  243. for that occasion.

  244. Most people come,

  245. you know,

  246. at the last minute.

  247. So I'm standing there

  248. beside Bill

  249. or whoever it is,

  250. coffin open

  251. and it's me

  252. and this person

  253. and no one else,

  254. no one else

  255. for some time,

  256. often three quarters of an hour.

  257. and in my,

  258. maybe it's me dealing

  259. with the issue at the moment

  260. and my black humour,

  261. I often talk to the person

  262. and they never,

  263. ever speak back to me.

  264. Ever.

  265. Not that I'm expecting it,

  266. but they never speak back to me.

  267. I can practice my sermon,

  268. I can sing songs,

  269. they never join in,

  270. they never participate

  271. in any way

  272. because dead people

  273. don't respond.

  274. They don't have life

  275. to respond.

  276. And that's the biblical picture.

  277. It's not that we

  278. are all as bad

  279. as we could possibly be,

  280. but that because of sin

  281. we are totally marred

  282. in every aspect

  283. of our being

  284. and we are spiritually dead.

  285. We are corpses,

  286. we're not drowning,

  287. we're drowned,

  288. we're dead.

  289. Unfortunately,

  290. as Sam mentioned last week,

  291. some people understand

  292. grace as God

  293. making up the difference

  294. between our good

  295. and the amount of good

  296. that God requires.

  297. So,

  298. I mean,

  299. it's like,

  300. depending on how you've lived your life,

  301. you've got different amounts of good.

  302. Nice middle class people

  303. don't need as much

  304. good as

  305. topping up as,

  306. for instance,

  307. a criminal

  308. sitting in Long Bay Jail.

  309. But whatever it is,

  310. God makes the requirements.

  311. So you can imagine,

  312. I want to buy a car

  313. that costs $100,000,

  314. which I

  315. don't want to,

  316. but I've only got

  317. $50,000,

  318. which I also

  319. don't have.

  320. And this view of grace

  321. means that,

  322. well,

  323. I've got $50,000,

  324. it's $100,000,

  325. well,

  326. God will just,

  327. you know,

  328. kindly top up

  329. what I need.

  330. It sounds nice,

  331. but it's a grave

  332. misunderstanding

  333. both of grace

  334. and of our lack

  335. of righteousness.

  336. We've got nothing to offer,

  337. we've got nothing to contribute.

  338. Not only do we

  339. not have

  340. any righteousness

  341. into our account,

  342. we've actually got debt

  343. in our account.

  344. And so we need

  345. God's grace

  346. not just to make up

  347. for our deficiencies,

  348. we need His grace

  349. to provide a remedy

  350. for our rebellion,

  351. for our guilt,

  352. for our pollution,

  353. our sin,

  354. our debt

  355. against God,

  356. which is incalculable.

  357. We need His grace

  358. to provide a satisfaction

  359. for His justice

  360. and to cancel

  361. a debt

  362. that we cannot pay.

  363. And so it's absolutely

  364. crucial that we

  365. understand our plights

  366. before God

  367. if we're going

  368. to understand

  369. and be amazed

  370. by grace

  371. because those

  372. who have been

  373. forgiven little

  374. in their minds

  375. don't love much.

  376. Don't appreciate

  377. grace

  378. much.

  379. This is how

  380. one person

  381. has put it.

  382. The first

  383. and possibly

  384. the most fundamental

  385. characteristic

  386. of divine grace

  387. is that it presupposes

  388. sin and guilt.

  389. Grace has meaning

  390. only.

  391. It only has meaning

  392. when people

  393. are seen

  394. as fallen,

  395. unworthy

  396. of salvation

  397. and liable

  398. to eternal

  399. wrath.

  400. Grace does not

  401. contemplate sin

  402. as merely

  403. as undeserving

  404. but as

  405. ill-deserving.

  406. It's not simply

  407. that we do not

  408. deserve grace

  409. but that we do

  410. deserve hell.

  411. that's

  412. that's the

  413. bleak

  414. pronouncement

  415. of our

  416. natural state

  417. before God.

  418. But in the very

  419. next verses

  420. in Ephesians

  421. we have the hope

  422. of grace.

  423. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:4

  424. verse 4

  425. but

  426. the word

  427. but there

  428. is a very

  429. different word

  430. but at this

  431. point

  432. you've got to

  433. love the word

  434. but in this

  435. occasion

  436. but

  437. because of

  438. his great

  439. love for us

  440. God who is

  441. rich in mercy

  442. made us alive

  443. with Christ

  444. even when we

  445. were dead

  446. in transgressions

  447. it's by grace

  448. that you've been

  449. saved.

  450. We're dead

  451. in our

  452. transgressions

  453. and sins

  454. but God

  455. intervenes.

  456. We're in

  457. bondage to

  458. sin

  459. but God

  460. intervenes.

  461. We were

  462. objects of

  463. wrath

  464. but God

  465. intervened.

  466. God who is

  467. rich in mercy

  468. intervened.

  469. Our condition

  470. was hopeless.

  471. We are

  472. corpses

  473. floating in

  474. a sea

  475. of ocean.

  476. We cannot

  477. respond.

  478. We're not

  479. asking for

  480. rescue

  481. and God

  482. gets the

  483. fish hook

  484. and pulls

  485. us up

  486. onto the

  487. boat

  488. and gives

  489. us life.

  490. The grace

  491. of God

  492. is love

  493. is his

  494. love

  495. freely

  496. shown

  497. towards

  498. guilty

  499. sinners

  500. contrary

  501. to their

  502. merit

  503. and in

  504. fact

  505. in

  506. defiance

  507. of their

  508. demerit.

  509. And we

  510. get a

  511. glimpse

  512. of the

  513. way God

  514. treats

  515. us

  516. in that

  517. parable

  518. in Matthew

  519. 20

  520. that Sam

  521. read out

  522. to us.

  523. So go to

  524. Matthew

  525. 20

  526. in your

  527. Bibles.

  528. There's some

  529. stuff I want to

  530. see, show

  531. you around

  532. it.

  533. Matthew

  534. 20, parable

  535. of the

  536. workers in

  537. the vineyard,

  538. starting at

  539. verse 1.

  540. Let me say

  541. straight up,

  542. this is not a

  543. story about

  544. Jewish agribusiness.

  545. Before I

  546. became a

  547. Christian, I

  548. had grown up

  549. in a

  550. house that

  551. was on a

  552. farm and

  553. had a

  554. Bible.

  555. And I

  556. remember

  557. reading this

  558. parable a

  559. number of

  560. times as

  561. a teenager

  562. and stuff

  563. going, it

  564. makes no

  565. sense, this

  566. parable.

  567. I don't

  568. know a

  569. single farmer

  570. who would

  571. operate like

  572. this anywhere.

  573. And that's

  574. because I was

  575. totally missing

  576. the point,

  577. because I was

  578. dead in my

  579. transgressions and

  580. sins I

  581. couldn't see.

  582. The background

  583. to Matthew

  584. 20 is

  585. Matthew 19.

  586. There we go.

  587. 19 becomes

  588. before 20.

  589. That's a big

  590. moment there.

  591. And there's

  592. this story in

  593. Matthew 19,

  594. this encounter

  595. that happens

  596. between Jesus

  597. and this guy,

  598. the rich young

  599. ruler.

  600. And you

  601. might remember

  602. this man,

  603. this young guy

  604. comes running

  605. up to Jesus

  606. and asks a

  607. really crucial

  608. question.

  609. He says,

  610. what must I

  611. do to inherit

  612. eternal life?

  613. It's a great

  614. question, but

  615. he's totally

  616. coming at it

  617. from the wrong

  618. angle.

  619. The word

  620. I is the

  621. problem there.

  622. what must I

  623. do to

  624. inherit?

  625. It's about

  626. me.

  627. It's about

  628. my effort

  629. to get

  630. eternal life.

  631. And as you

  632. read the

  633. encounter,

  634. you get this

  635. sense of this

  636. guy's pretty

  637. pressed with

  638. himself.

  639. I've done a

  640. bunch of

  641. stuff.

  642. Jesus rattles

  643. off a few

  644. of the

  645. commandments and

  646. he's sitting

  647. there in his

  648. mental thing

  649. and his

  650. heart going

  651. ticking off the

  652. box.

  653. Yeah, done

  654. that one.

  655. Yeah, done

  656. that one.

  657. Done that one.

  658. Done that one.

  659. And you go,

  660. yeah, I've

  661. done pretty

  662. well.

  663. Jesus says

  664. to him, you

  665. need to just

  666. do one more

  667. thing.

  668. Sell up

  669. everything you

  670. have and

  671. follow me.

  672. It's a call

  673. at that point

  674. to stop

  675. trusting in

  676. yourself, but

  677. in fact, and

  678. the stuff that

  679. you have and

  680. trust in me

  681. alone.

  682. And

  683. unfortunately,

  684. he's not

  685. willing to do

  686. that and he

  687. walks away.

  688. And in the

  689. background over

  690. here as this

  691. encounter's going

  692. on between

  693. this rich guy

  694. and Jesus is

  695. Peter, James

  696. and John

  697. and the boys,

  698. the rest of

  699. the disciples

  700. are over here

  701. and they're

  702. hearing this

  703. encounter go

  704. on.

  705. They see the

  706. rich young man

  707. walk away

  708. and Peter,

  709. as he has a

  710. tendency to do,

  711. speaks first

  712. and he says,

  713. well,

  714. Jesus,

  715. then who

  716. can be

  717. saved?

  718. And Jesus

  719. says,

  720. with man,

  721. this is

  722. impossible.

  723. With God,

  724. all things are

  725. possible.

  726. So you get

  727. the point?

  728. Salvation is

  729. not by what

  730. you do.

  731. Salvation is

  732. what God

  733. does.

  734. And notice

  735. the very next

  736. question that

  737. comes out of

  738. Peter's mouth.

  739. We've left

  740. everything,

  741. Jesus,

  742. to follow you.

  743. What will

  744. there be for

  745. us?

  746. You get

  747. it?

  748. Jesus,

  749. we're not

  750. like him.

  751. We didn't

  752. walk away.

  753. We've

  754. followed you,

  755. Jesus.

  756. Have we

  757. done enough

  758. then?

  759. Big,

  760. strong

  761. sniff of

  762. merit-based

  763. thinking.

  764. So Jesus

  765. tells his

  766. story.

  767. It's pretty

  768. straightforward.

  769. Farmer

  770. hires men

  771. at different

  772. times during

  773. the day.

  774. We're told

  775. that he

  776. hired them

  777. early in

  778. the morning,

  779. the third

  780. hour,

  781. the sixth

  782. hour,

  783. the ninth

  784. hour,

  785. and right

  786. to the

  787. very end

  788. of the

  789. day in

  790. the eleventh

  791. hour.

  792. And those

  793. began the

  794. work at

  795. the beginning

  796. of the

  797. day,

  798. agreed to

  799. a day's

  800. pay for

  801. their work

  802. at denarius.

  803. And the

  804. denarius was

  805. considered to

  806. be what was

  807. needed to

  808. provide well

  809. for a family.

  810. Get a

  811. denarius for a

  812. day's pay,

  813. you provided

  814. well for your

  815. family.

  816. notice that

  817. it wasn't

  818. an expectation

  819. the farmer

  820. would actually

  821. pay for

  822. them a

  823. denarii,

  824. but the

  825. farmer gives

  826. them a

  827. denarii to

  828. provide well

  829. for them.

  830. All of

  831. these who

  832. got paid on

  833. this particular

  834. day got

  835. what they

  836. needed,

  837. not what

  838. they had

  839. earned.

  840. They were

  841. paid according

  842. to grace

  843. of the

  844. farmer,

  845. not according

  846. to the

  847. work that

  848. they did.

  849. And the

  850. twist comes

  851. at the end

  852. of the day

  853. when the

  854. owner pays

  855. everyone the

  856. same,

  857. lines them

  858. up,

  859. pays them

  860. everyone the

  861. same.

  862. It's like

  863. they all

  864. received an

  865. A grade.

  866. It's like

  867. we're all

  868. in the same

  869. university

  870. course and

  871. I'm your

  872. lecturer and

  873. there are

  874. some of us

  875. here who are

  876. diligent

  877. studiers and

  878. we haven't

  879. slept for

  880. days and

  881. we've worked

  882. hard and

  883. we're

  884. expecting

  885. 99.9%

  886. if not

  887. 100% but

  888. we're just

  889. kind of

  890. expecting that.

  891. Those of us

  892. down here

  893. have been

  894. watching movies

  895. which is

  896. kind of

  897. what I

  898. do.

  899. And 51%

  900. means I

  901. work just

  902. a little

  903. bit too

  904. hard.

  905. And so

  906. I put

  907. all your

  908. scores and

  909. I've given

  910. every single

  911. one of you

  912. an A

  913. grade no

  914. matter how

  915. hard you've

  916. worked.

  917. You've all

  918. got it.

  919. And there

  920. are some

  921. of us

  922. down here

  923. who have

  924. been

  925. diligent

  926. and

  927. working

  928. really

  929. hard

  930. expecting

  931. high

  932. score

  933. and we

  934. see the

  935. Steve

  936. Jeffries in

  937. this world

  938. getting the

  939. exact same

  940. score.

  941. That's not

  942. fair.

  943. See the

  944. natural human

  945. tendency is not

  946. like to

  947. everyone to

  948. get the

  949. perfect score

  950. regardless of

  951. effort.

  952. And that's

  953. why we

  954. struggle with

  955. grace so

  956. much.

  957. Our

  958. natural

  959. moral

  960. default

  961. position is

  962. to count

  963. ourselves

  964. up here

  965. with the

  966. 12 hour

  967. workers of

  968. the day.

  969. The 99.9%

  970. score markers.

  971. Our moral

  972. position is to

  973. put ourselves

  974. in that area.

  975. When it

  976. comes to

  977. morality we

  978. can always

  979. look down

  980. to find

  981. someone else

  982. who's

  983. worse than

  984. I am.

  985. And so we

  986. regard ourselves

  987. more highly.

  988. I know

  989. someone who

  990. is currently

  991. who's been

  992. marked to

  993. never be

  994. released from

  995. prison.

  996. Many, many

  997. years ago he

  998. murdered a

  999. mother and

  1000. her baby.

  1001. And he

  1002. was in

  1003. the same

  1004. section of

  1005. a jail,

  1006. of a high

  1007. security jail

  1008. in Sydney

  1009. with the

  1010. perpetrators

  1011. of the

  1012. Milpera

  1013. Bikie

  1014. Massacre

  1015. from many

  1016. decades ago

  1017. now where

  1018. two Bikie

  1019. gangs came

  1020. together,

  1021. had a

  1022. shootout in

  1023. a car park

  1024. and they

  1025. gunned down

  1026. a seven

  1027. year old

  1028. girl in

  1029. the process

  1030. of that

  1031. shootout,

  1032. got caught

  1033. in the

  1034. crossfire.

  1035. This man

  1036. who I know

  1037. was in the

  1038. same section

  1039. of the

  1040. jail of

  1041. those guys.

  1042. The

  1043. guys who

  1044. perpetrated

  1045. the Milpera

  1046. Bikie

  1047. Massacre

  1048. grabbed him

  1049. one day,

  1050. poured boiling

  1051. water all

  1052. over him

  1053. and beat

  1054. him up,

  1055. quite savagely,

  1056. to an inch

  1057. of death.

  1058. Do you

  1059. know why?

  1060. How dare

  1061. you kill

  1062. a baby?

  1063. You can

  1064. sit in

  1065. Long Bay

  1066. Jail,

  1067. you can

  1068. even sit

  1069. in Long Bay

  1070. Jail,

  1071. convicted of

  1072. murder,

  1073. of a

  1074. seven year

  1075. old kid

  1076. and you

  1077. could still

  1078. find someone

  1079. worse than

  1080. you.

  1081. Normal,

  1082. default,

  1083. human position

  1084. when it

  1085. comes to

  1086. the way

  1087. we think

  1088. of ourselves

  1089. and our

  1090. morality.

  1091. You see,

  1092. in a sense

  1093. here,

  1094. the workers

  1095. are right.

  1096. It's not

  1097. fair what

  1098. the boss

  1099. is doing,

  1100. but that

  1101. is the

  1102. point.

  1103. Grace

  1104. is not

  1105. about being

  1106. fair,

  1107. it's about

  1108. God giving

  1109. us what we

  1110. don't deserve

  1111. and saving

  1112. us from

  1113. what we do

  1114. deserve.

  1115. And the

  1116. Bible speaks

  1117. about the

  1118. incredible

  1119. extent of

  1120. God's grace

  1121. to us

  1122. in a

  1123. number of

  1124. ways.

  1125. Wonderful

  1126. image of

  1127. Psalm 103

    Psalms 103:2

  1128. verse 2,

  1129. transgressions

  1130. against God

  1131. have been

  1132. removed as

  1133. far as the

  1134. east is

  1135. from the

  1136. west.

  1137. What an

  1138. incredible

  1139. picture.

  1140. That's

  1141. infinite

  1142. amount.

  1143. East,

  1144. for as far

  1145. as the

  1146. east is

  1147. from the

  1148. west,

  1149. is

  1150. infinity.

  1151. Isaiah

  1152. 38,

  1153. 17,

  1154. the

  1155. prophet

  1156. Isaiah

  1157. says

  1158. of

  1159. God,

  1160. you

  1161. have

  1162. put

  1163. all

  1164. of

  1165. my

  1166. sins

  1167. behind

  1168. your

  1169. back.

  1170. They

  1171. are

  1172. out

  1173. of

  1174. sight.

  1175. For a

  1176. Christian,

  1177. God no

  1178. longer sees

  1179. our deliberate

  1180. disobedience

  1181. or our

  1182. marred

  1183. performance.

  1184. An

  1185. emphasis on

  1186. the

  1187. completeness

  1188. of God's

  1189. forgiveness

  1190. is in

  1191. Micah 7

    Micah 7:19

  1192. verse 19.

  1193. You

  1194. will tread

  1195. our sins

  1196. underfoot

  1197. and you'll

  1198. hurl our

  1199. iniquities

  1200. into the

  1201. depths of

  1202. the sea.

  1203. They

  1204. haven't

  1205. fallen

  1206. over

  1207. board.

  1208. Oh my

  1209. goodness,

  1210. where'd

  1211. they

  1212. go?

  1213. They

  1214. sort of

  1215. sunk

  1216. down

  1217. there

  1218. like a

  1219. phone

  1220. over the

  1221. side

  1222. of a

  1223. boat

  1224. or

  1225. something

  1226. like

  1227. that.

  1228. God

  1229. has

  1230. deliberately

  1231. removed

  1232. them

  1233. and

  1234. placed

  1235. them

  1236. in

  1237. the

  1238. depths

  1239. of

  1240. the

  1241. sea.

  1242. Isaiah

  1243. 43,

  1244. 23

  1245. emphasizes

  1246. the

  1247. completeness

  1248. of

  1249. God's

  1250. forgiveness

  1251. again.

  1252. I,

  1253. even

  1254. I,

  1255. am

  1256. he

  1257. who

  1258. blots

  1259. out

  1260. your

  1261. transgressions

  1262. for

  1263. my

  1264. own

  1265. sake

  1266. and

  1267. remembers

  1268. your

  1269. sins

  1270. no

  1271. more.

  1272. God

  1273. it's

  1274. not

  1275. that

  1276. he's

  1277. somehow

  1278. forgotten

  1279. them

  1280. like

  1281. we've

  1282. lost

  1283. my

  1284. keys

  1285. where

  1286. did

  1287. they

  1288. go?

  1289. He's

  1290. deliberately

  1291. chooses

  1292. not to

  1293. remember

  1294. the sins

  1295. that we've

  1296. committed

  1297. against

  1298. him.

  1299. He's

  1300. decided

  1301. never

  1302. to

  1303. bring

  1304. them

  1305. up

  1306. again.

  1307. You

  1308. see

  1309. blotting

  1310. out

  1311. our

  1312. sins

  1313. is a

  1314. legal

  1315. act.

  1316. It's

  1317. like an

  1318. official

  1319. pardon

  1320. from a

  1321. suffering

  1322. governor.

  1323. However

  1324. the

  1325. choosing

  1326. to

  1327. remember

  1328. them

  1329. no

  1330. more

  1331. is

  1332. a

  1333. relational

  1334. act.

  1335. It is

  1336. where

  1337. the

  1338. injured

  1339. party

  1340. God

  1341. in

  1342. this

  1343. case

  1344. actively

  1345. chooses

  1346. to

  1347. have

  1348. no

  1349. sense

  1350. of

  1351. being

  1352. wronged.

  1353. He

  1354. chooses

  1355. to do

  1356. that.

  1357. The

  1358. reformer

  1359. Martin

  1360. Luther

  1361. really

  1362. summarized

  1363. it

  1364. well

  1365. when

  1366. he

  1367. wrote

  1368. sin

  1369. is

  1370. not

  1371. cancelled

  1372. by

  1373. law

  1374. living

  1375. for

  1376. no

  1377. person

  1378. is

  1379. able

  1380. to

  1381. live

  1382. up

  1383. to

  1384. the

  1385. law.

  1386. The

  1387. law

  1388. reveals

  1389. guilt.

  1390. It

  1391. fills

  1392. the

  1393. conscience

  1394. with

  1395. terror

  1396. and

  1397. drives

  1398. people

  1399. to

  1400. despair

  1401. much

  1402. less

  1403. is

  1404. sin

  1405. taken

  1406. away

  1407. by

  1408. man

  1409. invented

  1410. endeavours.

  1411. The

  1412. fact is

  1413. the

  1414. more

  1415. a

  1416. person

  1417. seeks

  1418. credit

  1419. for

  1427. he

  1428. goes

  1431. Nothing

  1432. can

  1434. away

  1435. sin

  1437. the

  1440. God.

  1441. In

  1442. actual

  1443. living

  1444. however

  1445. it

  1446. is

  1447. not

  1448. so

  1449. easy

  1450. to

  1451. persuade

  1452. oneself

  1453. that

  1454. grace

  1456. in

  1473. You see

  1474. the

  1475. outcome

  1476. of God's

  1477. gracious

  1478. actions

  1479. towards

  1490. No

  1491. accusation

  1492. can be

  1493. brought

  1494. against

  1495. us

  1496. because

  1497. there

  1498. is

  1499. no

  1501. against

  1502. us.

  1503. Two

  1547. alone

  1548. glory

  1561. about

  1562. his

  1569. the

  1572. from

  1573. Catholicism

  1574. into

  1575. Protestant

  1576. faith

  1577. and

  1578. he

  1579. said

  1580. do

  1581. you

  1582. know

  1583. why

  1584. they

  1585. don't

  1586. believe

  1587. in

  1588. purgatory

  1589. it's

  1590. because

  1591. they

  1592. believe

  1593. that

  1594. God

  1595. is

  1596. so

  1597. kind

  1598. that

  1599. he

  1600. will

  1601. take

  1602. his

  1603. people

  1604. straight

  1605. into

  1606. heaven

  1607. he

  1608. was

  1609. right

  1610. even

  1611. though

  1612. he

  1613. said

  1614. it

  1615. in

  1616. a

  1617. mocking

  1618. way

  1619. he

  1620. was

  1621. right

  1622. the

  1623. sheer

  1624. kindness

  1625. and

  1626. grace

  1627. of

  1628. God

  1629. expressed

  1630. in the

  1631. sufficient

  1632. work of

  1633. Christ

  1634. of the

  1635. cross

  1636. means

  1637. that

  1638. death

  1639. becomes

  1640. the doorway

  1641. into the

  1642. loving

  1643. presence

  1644. of

  1645. God

  1646. God

  1647. but

  1648. here's a

  1649. sober

  1650. but

  1651. notice

  1652. what

  1653. Luther

  1654. said

  1655. at the

  1656. end

  1657. of his

  1658. quote

  1659. it

  1660. is

  1661. hard

  1662. to

  1663. accept

  1664. and

  1665. live

  1666. by

  1667. grace

  1668. alone

  1669. if

  1670. grace

  1671. is so

  1672. amazing

  1673. why

  1674. is it

  1675. that we

  1676. struggle

  1677. to

  1678. embrace

  1679. it

  1680. as

  1681. freely

  1682. as

  1683. it

  1684. is

  1685. given

  1686. in

  1687. fact

  1688. one

  1689. of

  1690. the

  1691. most

  1692. significant

  1693. Christian

  1694. voices

  1695. of the

  1696. last

  1697. 100

  1698. years

  1699. suggest

  1700. that

  1701. very

  1702. few

  1703. of

  1704. us

  1705. in

  1706. the

  1707. church

  1708. grasp

  1709. it

  1710. and

  1711. live

  1712. by

  1713. grace

  1714. alone

  1715. he's

  1716. talking

  1717. about

  1718. those

  1719. in

  1720. the

  1721. church

  1722. struggling

  1723. to

  1724. grasp

  1725. and

  1726. live

  1727. by

  1728. grace

  1729. alone

  1730. in

  1731. his

  1732. classic

  1733. book

  1734. knowing

  1735. God

  1736. Jim

  1737. Packer

  1738. writes

  1739. there

  1740. do

  1741. not

  1742. seem

  1743. to

  1744. be

  1745. many

  1746. in

  1747. our

  1748. churches

  1749. who

  1750. believe

  1751. in

  1752. grace

  1753. now

  1754. when

  1755. someone

  1756. of

  1757. Packer

  1758. standing

  1759. writes

  1760. something

  1761. like

  1762. that

  1763. you've

  1764. got

  1765. to

  1766. listen

  1767. what

  1768. he's

  1769. saying

  1770. there

  1771. is

  1772. we

  1773. are

  1774. in

  1775. danger

  1776. of

  1777. abandoning

  1778. the

  1779. very

  1780. thing

  1781. that

  1782. we

  1783. say

  1784. we

  1785. stand

  1786. on

  1787. and

  1788. he

  1789. gives

  1790. three

  1791. reasons

  1792. the

  1793. first

  1794. reason

  1795. he

  1796. gives

  1797. is

  1798. that

  1799. people

  1800. have

  1801. a

  1802. high

  1803. view

  1804. of

  1805. themselves

  1806. we

  1807. tend

  1808. to

  1809. treat

  1810. small

  1811. virtues

  1812. as

  1813. compensation

  1814. for

  1815. great

  1816. vices

  1817. we

  1818. tend

  1819. to

  1820. think

  1821. that

  1822. we

  1823. are

  1824. basically

  1825. good

  1826. we

  1827. tend

  1828. to

  1829. downplay

  1830. the

  1831. suggestion

  1832. that

  1833. we

  1834. are

  1835. fallen

  1836. from

  1837. God's

  1838. image

  1839. rebels

  1840. against

  1841. God's

  1842. rule

  1843. guilty

  1844. and

  1845. uncleaning

  1846. God's

  1847. sight

  1848. and fit

  1849. only

  1850. for

  1851. God's

  1852. condemnation

  1853. high

  1854. high

  1855. high

  1856. high

  1857. view

  1858. of

  1859. self

  1860. the

  1861. second

  1862. reason

  1863. he

  1864. suggests

  1865. is

  1866. that

  1867. we

  1868. don't

  1869. believe

  1870. grace

  1871. is

  1872. that

  1873. we

  1874. have

  1875. a

  1876. tendency

  1877. to

  1878. turn

  1879. a

  1880. blind

  1881. eye

  1882. to

  1883. all

  1884. wrongdoing

  1885. that

  1886. we

  1887. can

  1888. he

  1889. said

  1890. there's

  1891. a

  1892. willingness

  1893. to

  1894. tolerate

  1895. and

  1896. indulge

  1897. evil

  1898. up

  1899. to

  1900. a

  1901. point

  1902. he

  1903. said

  1904. the

  1905. ability

  1906. to

  1907. indulge

  1908. evil

  1909. up

  1910. to

  1911. a

  1912. point

  1913. is

  1914. seen

  1915. as

  1916. a

  1917. virtue

  1918. it's

  1919. seen

  1920. as a

  1921. virtue

  1922. of

  1923. tolerance

  1924. we

  1925. make

  1926. excuse

  1927. after

  1928. excuse

  1929. for

  1930. our

  1931. sin

  1932. we

  1933. even

  1934. justify

  1935. it

  1936. I

  1937. justify

  1938. myself

  1939. and

  1940. I've

  1941. heard

  1942. it

  1943. many

  1944. times

  1945. I

  1946. was

  1947. provoked

  1948. I've

  1949. had a

  1950. bad

  1951. life

  1952. I was

  1953. dropped

  1954. on my

  1955. head

  1956. as a

  1957. baby

  1958. it's

  1959. just

  1960. or

  1961. it's

  1962. just

  1963. the

  1964. way

  1965. that

  1966. person

  1967. is

  1968. we're

  1969. just

  1970. used

  1971. to

  1972. the

  1973. way

  1974. they

  1975. are

  1976. now

  1977. they

  1978. gossip

  1979. we're

  1980. just

  1981. used

  1982. to

  1983. that

  1984. that's

  1985. just

  1986. who

  1987. they

  1988. are

  1989. they're

  1990. angry

  1991. we're

  1992. just

  1993. used

  1994. to

  1995. that

  1996. just

  1997. who

  1998. they

  1999. are

  2000. we

  2001. even

  2002. conclude

  2003. that

  2004. God

  2005. is

  2006. the

  2007. same

  2008. towards

  2009. us

  2010. grace

  2011. is

  2012. turning

  2013. to

  2014. leniency

  2015. and

  2016. leniency

  2017. is

  2018. where

  2019. God

  2020. makes

  2021. up

  2022. the

  2023. difference

  2024. for

  2025. me

  2026. divine

  2027. retribution

  2028. against

  2029. all

  2030. level

  2031. of

  2032. sin

  2033. is

  2034. not

  2035. taken

  2036. seriously

  2037. we

  2038. tend

  2039. to

  2040. have

  2041. a

  2042. hierarchy

  2043. of

  2044. the

  2045. real

  2046. serious

  2047. ones

  2048. and

  2049. the

  2050. rest

  2051. we

  2052. just

  2053. tolerate

  2054. us

  2055. just

  2056. the

  2057. way

  2058. they

  2059. are

  2060. third

  2061. reason

  2062. why

  2063. we

  2064. struggle

  2065. to

  2066. believe

  2067. in

  2068. grace

  2069. is

  2070. the

  2071. belief

  2072. that

  2073. we're

  2074. in

  2075. a

  2076. position

  2077. to

  2078. be

  2079. able

  2080. to

  2081. repair

  2082. our

  2083. relationship

  2084. with

  2085. God

  2086. while

  2087. we

  2088. might

  2089. concede

  2090. that

  2091. we

  2092. are

  2093. not

  2094. perfect

  2095. we

  2096. still

  2097. have

  2098. doubt

  2099. that

  2100. respectability

  2101. we

  2102. still

  2103. have

  2104. no

  2105. doubt

  2106. that

  2107. respectability

  2108. will

  2109. account

  2110. for

  2111. something

  2112. in

  2113. the

  2114. end

  2115. to

  2116. the

  2117. degree

  2118. that

  2119. we

  2120. view

  2121. ourselves

  2122. as

  2123. worthy

  2124. is

  2125. the

  2126. degree

  2127. to

  2128. which

  2129. we

  2130. nullify

  2131. God's

  2132. grace

  2133. so

  2134. earlier

  2135. I

  2136. mentioned

  2137. an

  2138. inadequate

  2139. even

  2140. fatal

  2141. view

  2142. of

  2143. grace

  2144. where

  2145. God

  2146. makes

  2147. up

  2148. the

  2149. deficiency

  2150. of

  2151. our

  2152. efforts

  2153. salvation

  2154. of

  2155. salvation

  2156. I

  2157. just

  2158. drift

  2159. away

  2160. from

  2161. grace

  2162. into

  2163. my

  2164. own

  2165. merit

  2166. my

  2167. own

  2168. self

  2169. reliance

  2170. and

  2171. independence

  2172. from

  2173. God

  2174. it is

  2175. so

  2176. easy

  2177. to

  2178. drift

  2179. into

  2180. God's

  2181. blessings

  2182. at

  2183. least

  2184. partially

  2185. to

  2186. think

  2187. that

  2188. God's

  2189. blessings

  2190. even

  2191. partially

  2192. are

  2193. earned

  2194. by

  2195. our

  2196. obedience

  2197. and

  2198. by

  2199. our

  2200. spiritual

  2201. disciplines

  2202. it

  2203. might

  2204. not

  2205. be

  2206. via

  2207. the

  2208. seven

  2209. sacraments

  2210. of

  2211. the

  2212. Roman

  2213. Catholic

  2214. Church

  2215. but

  2216. it

  2217. might

  2218. be

  2219. even

  2220. our

  2221. ability

  2222. to

  2223. articulate

  2224. grace

  2225. alone

  2226. or

  2227. a

  2228. theological

  2229. clarity

  2230. as

  2231. being

  2232. a

  2233. reason

  2234. why

  2235. God

  2236. would

  2237. bless

  2238. me

  2239. we

  2240. know

  2241. we're

  2242. saved

  2243. by

  2244. grace

  2245. but

  2246. we

  2247. can

  2248. drift

  2249. into

  2250. thinking

  2251. that

  2252. I

  2253. must

  2254. live

  2255. by

  2256. my

  2257. spiritual

  2258. sweat

  2259. we

  2260. all

  2261. need

  2262. grace

  2263. from

  2264. beginning

  2265. to

  2266. end

  2267. the

  2268. saint

  2269. as

  2270. well

  2271. as

  2272. the

  2273. sinner

  2274. the

  2275. most

  2276. conscientious

  2277. dutiful

  2278. long-term

  2279. hard-working

  2280. Christian

  2281. needs

  2282. God's

  2283. grace

  2284. as much

  2285. every

  2286. day

  2287. as

  2288. the

  2289. hardest

  2290. living

  2291. sinner

  2292. the

  2293. sinner

  2294. doesn't

  2295. need

  2296. more

  2297. grace

  2298. than

  2299. the

  2300. saint

  2301. nor

  2302. does

  2303. the

  2304. immature

  2305. and

  2306. undisciplined

  2307. believer

  2308. need

  2309. more

  2310. than

  2311. the

  2312. godly

  2313. zealous

  2314. missionary

  2315. we

  2316. all

  2317. need

  2318. the

  2319. same

  2320. amount

  2321. of

  2322. grace

  2323. because

  2324. the

  2325. currency

  2326. of

  2327. good

  2328. works

  2329. is

  2330. worthless

  2331. it

  2332. is

  2333. worthless

  2334. neither

  2335. our

  2336. merits

  2337. nor

  2338. our

  2339. demerits

  2340. determine

  2341. how much

  2342. grace

  2343. we need

  2344. because

  2345. grace

  2346. does not

  2347. supplement

  2348. merits

  2349. and it

  2350. does not

  2351. make up

  2352. for

  2353. demerits

  2354. grace

  2355. doesn't take

  2356. into account

  2357. merits

  2358. it doesn't

  2359. take into

  2360. account

  2361. demerits

  2362. at all

  2363. grace

  2364. considers

  2365. all

  2366. people

  2367. totally

  2368. undeserving

  2369. and able

  2370. to undo

  2371. anything

  2372. to earn

  2373. the blessing

  2374. of god

  2375. as one

  2376. author has

  2377. written

  2378. grace

  2379. ceases

  2380. to be

  2381. grace

  2382. if god

  2383. is compelled

  2384. to bestow

  2385. it in the

  2386. presence

  2387. of human

  2388. merit

  2389. grace

  2390. ceases

  2391. to be

  2392. grace

  2393. if

  2394. compelled

  2395. sorry

  2396. grace

  2397. ceases

  2398. to be

  2399. grace

  2400. if god

  2401. is compelled

  2402. to withdraw

  2403. it in the

  2404. presence

  2405. of human

  2406. demerit

  2407. grace

  2408. is treating

  2409. the person

  2410. without the

  2411. slightest

  2412. reference

  2413. to desert

  2414. whatsoever

  2415. but wholly

  2416. according to

  2417. the infinite

  2418. goodness

  2419. and sovereign

  2420. purposes

  2421. of god

  2422. that is

  2423. grace

  2424. alone

  2425. and so

  2426. if you

  2427. sometimes

  2428. feel that

  2429. you deserve

  2430. an answer

  2431. to a

  2432. prayer

  2433. or a

  2434. blessing

  2435. from god

  2436. because of

  2437. your

  2438. diligence

  2439. and your

  2440. hard work

  2441. and your

  2442. longevity

  2443. as a

  2444. christian

  2445. it's no

  2446. longer

  2447. living by

  2448. grace

  2449. alone

  2450. but if

  2451. it's just

  2452. as true

  2453. that if

  2454. we

  2455. sometimes

  2456. despair

  2457. of experiencing

  2458. god's

  2459. blessing

  2460. because of

  2461. our

  2462. demerits

  2463. you're no

  2464. longer living

  2465. by grace

  2466. alone

  2467. to the

  2468. extent we

  2469. are clinging

  2470. to any

  2471. self

  2472. righteousness

  2473. or putting

  2474. our confidence

  2475. into any

  2476. of our

  2477. own

  2478. spiritual

  2479. attainments

  2480. to that

  2481. degree

  2482. we are not

  2483. living by

  2484. grace

  2485. and so

  2486. what's the

  2487. evidence

  2488. of grace

  2489. in an

  2490. individual

  2491. and a

  2492. church

  2493. let me

  2494. try to

  2495. capture

  2496. by quoting

  2497. one of our

  2498. core values

  2499. humble

  2500. authenticity

  2501. humility

  2502. humility

  2503. is a

  2504. genuine

  2505. outworking

  2506. you do

  2507. not elevate

  2508. yourself over

  2509. people

  2510. you do not

  2511. say I'm

  2512. more worthy

  2513. of those

  2514. people

  2515. I deserve

  2516. more things

  2517. than those

  2518. people

  2519. that cultural

  2520. group or those

  2521. individuals are

  2522. less worthy

  2523. they need to

  2524. understand the

  2525. world from my

  2526. perspective

  2527. humility

  2528. grace

  2529. humility

  2530. humility

  2531. they're the

  2532. foundations of

  2533. a

  2534. transcultural

  2535. church

  2536. that bears

  2537. and loves

  2538. one another

  2539. the need

  2540. for us

  2541. to see

  2542. our

  2543. spiritual

  2544. bankruptcy

  2545. the daily

  2546. need for us

  2547. to do that

  2548. this is where

  2549. we must begin

  2550. and end

  2551. if we are to

  2552. experience the

  2553. daily joy

  2554. of living by

  2555. God's

  2556. transforming

  2557. grace

  2558. so I

  2559. urge you

  2560. today

  2561. to lay

  2562. aside

  2563. any

  2564. remnant

  2565. of self

  2566. goodness

  2567. that you

  2568. might still

  2569. have

  2570. admit your

  2571. total

  2572. spiritual

  2573. bankruptcy

  2574. and drink

  2575. deeply

  2576. from the

  2577. infinite

  2578. grace of

  2579. God

  2580. we deserve

  2581. nothing

  2582. we were

  2583. owed

  2584. nothing

  2585. and yet

  2586. we have

  2587. everything

  2588. through the

  2589. grace of

  2590. the Lord

  2591. Jesus Christ

  2592. my friends

  2593. nothing

  2594. in our

  2595. hands we

  2596. bring

  2597. only to

  2598. the cross

  2599. we cling
