  1. If you haven't got a Bible in front of you, I'd encourage you to do that right now.

  2. Stick your hand up. Our hosts will come around and give you one to you.

  3. You need it in front of you. Galatians chapter 2 is where we're up to.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  4. Last week we were in Galatians chapter 2. We're moving on a bit further.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  5. We saw in chapter 2 verses 4 and 5 last week that there were certain

  6. professing Jewish Christians from Jerusalem who tried to compel Titus,

  7. a Greek Christian, to be circumcised.

  8. And the Apostle Paul refused to submit to this pressure.

  9. And the reason he gives in verse 5 is that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.

  10. That is, if Paul had given in for the demand for Titus to be circumcised under those circumstances,

  11. he would have torpedoed the truth of the gospel.

  12. And if he torpedoed the truth of the gospel, the Gentile mission was over.

  13. Christ would have died in vain.

  14. And you and I, I'm assuming the majority of us here are Gentiles,

  15. would be still under the wrath of God for our sin.

  16. That's how crucial this little interaction was for Paul.

  17. Two centuries later, for us, and the impact for us two centuries later.

  18. What's this gospel that Paul saw was so necessary to fight for?

  19. The gospel is the good news that the privilege of getting right with God

  20. was purchased fully when Jesus Christ died on a cross for our sins and rose again.

  21. The gospel is the good news that the privilege of getting right with God,

  22. being justified before God,

  23. was purchased fully for us when Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sin and rose again.

  24. And there is no other gospel.

  25. There's no other gospel.

  26. And the only way to enjoy this privilege is to put our trust in Jesus,

  27. the Son of God who loves us and gave himself for us.

  28. Justification by faith in Christ and what he has done.

  29. And if you add any other requirements

  30. which encourage people to rely upon their own working or their own willing,

  31. you torpedo the gospel.

  32. It becomes nothing.

  33. If justification being right with God is not by faith,

  34. it's not by anything.

  35. And Paul took his stand on that point.

  36. Titus will not be compelled to be circumcised.

  37. The truth of the gospel will be preserved.

  38. Now we launch into verses 11 to 14.

  39. And the truth of the gospel is again at stake.

  40. And the venue shifted now from Jerusalem to Antioch,

  41. the place where the Gentile mission began.

  42. And again, Gentiles are here being compelled to live like Jews.

  43. In Jerusalem, the issue was circumcision.

  44. In Antioch, the issue is Jewish dietary laws.

  45. And in both cases, the gospel is at stake and Paul takes his stand.

  46. In Jerusalem, the truth of the gospel was at stake through the possibility of false teaching.

  47. In Antioch, the truth of the gospel is at stake because of false behavior, false living.

  48. It's Peter's behavior here that denies the truth of the gospel.

  49. And so today, I don't want to focus so much on what the gospel is

  50. as much on how the gospel functions in our lives.

  51. So there's three things I want us to see.

  52. Those of you taking notes, three things, put it down in your piece of paper.

  53. The heart of the gospel, the centrality of the gospel, and the power of the gospel.

  54. I see people running, grabbing for notes.

  55. There's no photo you can take.

  56. Get a pen in front.

  57. The heart of the gospel, the centrality of the gospel, the power of the gospel.

  58. And the heart of the gospel we see in verses 15 and 16.

  59. We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles know that a person is not justified by the works of the law,

  60. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  61. So we too have put our faith in Jesus Christ that we may be justified by faith in Christ,

  62. not by the works of the law, because the works of the law, no one will be justified.

  63. That, those couple of verses there, is the reversal of the order you find in every other religion apart from Christianity.

  64. To be justified there means to be right with God.

  65. And every other religion is it is through some effort on our behalf.

  66. There's always something that we must, some kind of divine law that must be obeyed,

  67. some sort of ceremonial observance in order for us to become pleasing in the eyes of some deity.

  68. And Paul comes along and says,

  69. we're not put right with God through our effort.

  70. We're not put right with God through any form of obedience.

  71. We are justified by faith in Lord Jesus and only by faith in the Lord Jesus.

  72. Now, this doesn't mean that Christians can live however they want.

  73. I mean, because Paul says in verse 17 that Christianity is not about promoting a life of sin.

  74. The issue here is getting the order right.

  75. Last couple of weeks, we've been reading and hearing about this circumcision group that came down from Jerusalem.

  76. They are Jews who believe that Jesus was the Messiah.

  77. They had become Christians,

  78. but they still wanted to keep circumcision and Jewish dietary laws as a way to ensure that you were truly saved.

  79. Completely saved.

  80. That was the problem.

  81. And here we have,

  82. in Galatians, and we see it clearly in these verses,

  83. a battle between two orders.

  84. And the central issue is three steps in these two orders.

  85. The false teachers were saying,

  86. step one, believe in Jesus Christ.

  87. Step two, keep the law of God.

  88. And step three,

  89. then you can be sure you're fully saved.

  90. Paul's gospel vindicated in Jerusalem,

  91. as we saw last week.

  92. Step one, believe in the Lord Jesus.

  93. Step two, you are saved in that moment.

  94. And step three, you are now set free in order to obey God.

  95. You do,

  96. so it's a question I would pose to you now.

  97. Do you say,

  98. I will obey in order to be loved by God?

  99. Or do you say,

  100. I'm already loved by God in Jesus Christ,

  101. and therefore I'm set free to a life of obedience?

  102. One is a religious order.

  103. The other is a gospel order.

  104. These are not two different arms of the same faith.

  105. This is not two different denominations

  106. with slightly different emphasis.

  107. These are two orders.

  108. This is two different worlds.

  109. This is two different religions

  110. that result into very different kinds of obediences.

  111. One is an anxious obedience

  112. because you never know whether you've actually done enough.

  113. It's also selfish.

  114. It's a selfish obedience

  115. because the motive for doing every good thing

  116. is to get something from God.

  117. It's an obedience which is anxious,

  118. it's selfish,

  119. it's joyless,

  120. it's a burden.

  121. But what if you obey

  122. because you've already got everything as a gift?

  123. What if you've already gotten love

  124. and intimacy

  125. and a secure future

  126. and you've got acceptance?

  127. What if you've already got that?

  128. And that's what the,

  129. that's a fundamental issue,

  130. the core issue of Christianity.

  131. It's in Jesus,

  132. the God of this universe

  133. who we get to call Father.

  134. We're encouraged to call our Father.

  135. Father affirms us

  136. in a way that no earthly father

  137. can possibly affirm their children.

  138. Always.

  139. In Jesus,

  140. we receive the praise of the praiseworthy.

  141. You are my much loved child.

  142. Always.

  143. Always.

  144. And this is the God who says that,

  145. the God to whom all hearts are open,

  146. all desires known,

  147. and from whom no secrets are hidden.

  148. This is the God who says,

  149. you are my much loved child

  150. in Jesus Christ.

  151. Obedience that flows from that

  152. is totally different.

  153. The motivation would be joy,

  154. not anxiety.

  155. The motivation wouldn't come

  156. from an empty heart.

  157. It comes from a full heart,

  158. an affirmed heart,

  159. a loved heart.

  160. Obedience is not selfish

  161. because I can love and give

  162. and serve for God's sake

  163. and my neighbour's sake

  164. and not for my sake.

  165. It's radically different.

  166. See the difference in these two orders?

  167. Two different ways of living.

  168. And notice verse 20 where it says,

  169. I have been crucified with Christ.

  170. I no longer live,

  171. but Christ lives in me.

  172. The life I now live in the body,

  173. I live by faith in the Son of God

  174. who loved me and gave himself for me.

  175. See when you become a Christian,

  176. you put your faith in Jesus Christ

  177. and it says in verse 20

  178. that you are crucified with Christ.

  179. The Bible also says

  180. that we are raised with Christ.

  181. What does that mean?

  182. It means that when you put your faith

  183. in Jesus Christ,

  184. you are united with Christ.

  185. You have a new life with Christ.

  186. You see,

  187. God sees you free

  188. from all condemnation

  189. condemnation

  190. as if

  191. you were the one

  192. who died on the cross

  193. for your sins.

  194. Your sins are paid for.

  195. But not only does Jesus take my sin,

  196. he also

  197. gives me his righteousness.

  198. On the cross,

  199. God treated Jesus

  200. as if

  201. he had done

  202. everything that I've done

  203. and you've done.

  204. And when you put

  205. your faith in Jesus,

  206. God treats me

  207. as if I've done

  208. everything that Jesus

  209. has done.

  210. And now,

  211. the Christian lives

  212. knowing that God

  213. honors them like that.

  214. two very different

  215. orders

  216. that create

  217. two very

  218. different lives.

  219. That's the heart

  220. of the gospel.

  221. That's how it impacts

  222. our life.

  223. Now let's see

  224. how it functions

  225. in our lives.

  226. Verses 11 to 13,

  227. let's go back to there.

  228. This is the centrality

  229. of the gospel.

  230. When Cephas

  231. came to Antioch,

  232. I opposed him

  233. to his face

  234. because he stood

  235. condemned.

  236. For before certain

  237. men came from James,

  238. he used to eat

  239. with the Gentiles,

  240. but when they arrived,

  241. he began to draw back

  242. and separate himself

  243. from the Gentiles

  244. because he was afraid

  245. of those who belonged

  246. to the circumcision group.

  247. The other Jews

  248. joined him

  249. in his hypocrisy

  250. so that by their hypocrisy,

  251. even Barnabas

  252. was led astray.

  253. This would have to be

  254. one of the most

  255. tense moments

  256. in the New Testament.

  257. Here are two

  258. leading apostles,

  259. one head

  260. of reaching the Jews,

  261. one head

  262. of reaching the Gentiles,

  263. and face-to-face

  264. open conflict

  265. with each other.

  266. So let me remind you

  267. of some of the back story

  268. that's going on here.

  269. Cephas,

  270. who we know

  271. as the Apostle Peter,

  272. was Jewish

  273. and the Jews

  274. had practiced

  275. for centuries

  276. a ceremonial law.

  277. You see it everywhere

  278. in the Old Testament.

  279. There were two aspects

  280. of Old Testament worship

  281. of God.

  282. One was the ceremonial laws

  283. about things

  284. that they could not eat,

  285. things that they couldn't wear,

  286. clothing that they weren't

  287. allowed to wear,

  288. things that they couldn't touch.

  289. They had to stay

  290. ceremonially clean

  291. or they couldn't go

  292. and worship God

  293. on the Sabbath.

  294. And the Gentiles

  295. living around them

  296. didn't have those laws

  297. and didn't obey

  298. those laws

  299. and so they were

  300. regarded as unclean.

  301. And it wasn't hard

  302. for Jews

  303. to consider themselves

  304. morally superior

  305. to all those

  306. unclean Gentiles.

  307. And apart from those laws,

  308. there were also

  309. sacrificial laws.

  310. Animals were sacrificed

  311. to atone

  312. for the sin of the Jews.

  313. It was God's way

  314. of saying that

  315. no matter how hard

  316. you try with the ceremonial laws,

  317. no matter how hard

  318. you try to keep yourself clean,

  319. you're going to fail.

  320. you'll never be good enough,

  321. you're never going to be clean enough

  322. and so there's going to need

  323. to be atonement

  324. for your sin.

  325. And Jesus comes along

  326. as Lord and Saviour.

  327. Number one,

  328. no need for sacrifices anymore

  329. because Jesus

  330. fulfilled them all

  331. with the sacrifice

  332. of himself on the cross

  333. at number two ceremonial laws.

  334. They all pointed to Jesus

  335. and his sacrifice

  336. and him

  337. through his sacrifice

  338. wiping away sin

  339. and making all people

  340. clean in him.

  341. So only in Jesus

  342. can we be truly clean

  343. and acceptable

  344. in God's presence.

  345. Now the twelve apostles

  346. were Jews

  347. and so it was pretty hard

  348. for them in this.

  349. Jesus was however

  350. pretty explicit.

  351. Mark chapter 7

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  352. where he told them

  353. that in him

  354. they were clean,

  355. they didn't need

  356. the dietary laws

  357. but it was still hard.

  358. All of their lives

  359. they had regarded

  360. themselves as the clean

  361. ones and the Gentiles

  362. as the unclean ones.

  363. It was hard for them

  364. to eat with Gentiles

  365. and yet Peter himself

  366. had heard this teaching

  367. from Jesus' lips

  368. and also in Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  369. and 11

  370. Peter gave this

  371. massively vivid vision

  372. to show him

  373. to show him

  374. that there was no longer

  375. any racial divisions

  376. and all food

  377. was clean

  378. and that he should

  379. eat with Gentiles

  380. in which case

  381. he immediately

  382. does with Cornelius.

  383. He goes into the house

  384. of Cornelius

  385. who's a

  386. filthy Gentile.

  387. And in fact

  388. in verse 12

  389. here we notice

  390. that Peter

  391. did eat

  392. with the Gentiles

  393. and then

  394. something happened.

  395. Peter withdrew

  396. from the Gentile

  397. Christians

  398. not because

  399. of theological

  400. conviction.

  401. He hadn't

  402. changed his views.

  403. the issue here

  404. according to verse 13

  405. is hypocrisy.

  406. He hadn't

  407. changed his mind

  408. hadn't changed

  409. his convictions

  410. he changed

  411. his behaviour.

  412. It didn't align

  413. with his

  414. theological convictions.

  415. See Paul here

  416. is not saying

  417. Peter

  418. that's a little bit

  419. rude.

  420. he's actually

  421. saying

  422. your behaviour

  423. is hypocritical.

  424. What caused it?

  425. He feared

  426. criticism

  427. from a

  428. small

  429. but powerful

  430. pressure group

  431. that had

  432. come from

  433. Jerusalem

  434. to Antioch.

  435. And Paul

  436. sees

  437. something

  438. deeper here

  439. than simple

  440. table manners

  441. or rudeness.

  442. He calls

  443. it

  444. not acting

  445. in line

  446. with the

  447. truth

  448. of the

  449. gospel.

  450. Your behaviour

  451. is undermining

  452. the gospel.

  453. See verse 14

  454. when I

  455. saw

  456. that they

  457. were not

  458. acting

  459. in line

  460. with the

  461. truth

  462. of the

  463. gospel

  464. I said

  465. to

  466. Cephas

  467. in front

  468. of them

  469. all

  470. you

  471. are

  472. a Jew

  473. and yet

  474. you

  475. live

  476. like a

  477. Gentile

  478. and not

  479. like a

  480. Jew

  481. how is

  482. it

  483. then

  484. that

  485. you

  486. force

  487. Gentiles

  488. to

  489. follow

  490. Jewish

  491. customs

  492. we

  493. who

  494. are

  495. Jews

  496. by

  497. birth

  498. and

  499. not

  500. sinful

  501. Gentiles

  502. know

  503. that

  504. a

  505. person

  506. is

  507. not

  508. justified

  509. by

  510. the

  511. works

  512. of

  513. the

  514. law

  515. but

  516. by

  517. faith

  518. in

  519. Jesus

  520. Christ.

  521. You see

  522. Peter and

  523. Barnabas

  524. here

  525. and others

  526. with them

  527. went back

  528. into

  529. attitudes

  530. of racial

  531. superiority

  532. and exclusivity

  533. that the

  534. Jews

  535. historically

  536. held

  537. over

  538. Gentiles

  539. and Paul

  540. says

  541. Peter

  542. you're

  543. not

  544. living

  545. in line

  546. with the

  547. truth

  548. of

  549. the

  550. gospel

  551. and the

  552. word

  553. that

  554. Paul

  555. uses

  556. here

  557. in the

  558. original

  559. language

  560. is

  561. orthopadio

  562. orthopadio

  563. it's where

  564. we get

  565. the English

  566. word

  567. orthopedics

  568. Peter

  569. you are

  570. not

  571. straight

  572. walking

  573. with the

  574. gospel

  575. you're

  576. diverting

  577. in your

  578. life

  579. away

  580. from

  581. the

  582. truth

  583. of

  584. the

  585. gospel

  586. you're

  587. not

  588. straight

  589. walking

  590. the

  591. truth

  592. of

  593. the

  594. gospel

  595. had

  596. not

  597. shaped

  598. this

  599. particular

  600. area

  601. of

  602. Peter's

  603. life

  604. he was

  605. too

  606. concerned

  607. about

  608. the

  609. approval

  610. of a

  611. powerful

  612. minority

  613. group

  614. he had

  615. it in

  616. his

  617. head

  618. it

  619. wasn't

  620. in

  621. his

  622. heart

  623. now

  624. it's

  625. essential

  626. for us

  627. to see

  628. here

  629. the

  630. magnitude

  631. of what

  632. Paul

  633. is

  634. saying

  635. he's

  636. saying

  637. that the

  638. gospel

  639. is

  640. truth

  641. it

  642. is a

  643. message

  644. with

  645. a set

  656. but

  657. secondly

  658. and just

  659. as

  660. crucial

  661. the

  662. gospel

  663. truth

  664. has a

  665. vast

  666. number

  667. of

  668. implications

  669. for

  670. our

  671. lives

  672. everything

  673. in

  674. life

  675. must

  676. be

  677. brought

  680. with

  681. the

  682. truth

  683. of

  684. the

  686. and

  687. Paul

  688. looks

  689. at

  690. Peter

  691. an

  693. who

  694. frankly

  695. is

  696. more

  697. advanced

  698. in the

  700. faith

  701. than

  702. anyone

  703. in

  706. and

  707. tells

  708. him

  709. Peter

  710. you've

  711. forgotten

  712. the

  713. gospel

  714. now

  715. if

  716. Peter

  717. needs

  718. to

  719. hear

  720. it

  721. we

  722. need

  723. to

  724. hear

  725. it

  726. he

  727. was not

  728. walking

  729. in line

  730. with the

  731. truth

  732. of

  733. gospel

  734. it

  735. was

  736. Paul's

  737. way

  738. of

  739. saying

  740. you

  741. are

  742. not

  743. applying

  744. the

  745. implications

  746. of

  747. the

  748. gospel

  749. in

  750. the

  751. way

  752. that

  753. you

  754. are

  755. treating

  756. people

  757. of

  758. other

  760. and

  761. also

  762. the

  763. implication

  764. of

  765. the

  766. gospel

  767. in

  768. your

  770. of

  786. of

  787. you

  788. you've

  789. got

  790. a

  792. affirmation

  793. now

  794. there

  795. are

  796. some

  797. beliefs

  798. that

  809. world

  869. we

  874. is

  875. shaped

  880. do I

  881. take

  882. that

  883. promotion

  885. massive

  890. about those

  891. sorts of

  892. issues

  893. in

  894. our

  896. of course

  897. we do

  898. it's

  899. more

  900. money

  901. of course

  902. we're

  903. going to

  904. take

  905. it

  923. our

  925. is shaped

  940. we handle

  941. conflict

  942. is shaped

  948. who think

  949. differently

  950. even about

  951. same-sex

  952. marriage

  953. is shaped

  954. by the

  955. gospel

  956. the truth

  957. of the

  958. gospel

  959. goes

  960. everywhere

  961. in life

  962. there's not

  963. a corner

  964. it does

  965. not

  966. touch

  967. and it

  968. does not

  969. reform

  970. does not

  971. inform

  972. and does

  973. not

  974. shape

  975. it is

  976. the

  977. framework

  978. by which

  979. the

  980. Christian

  981. sees

  982. and

  983. evaluates

  984. everything

  985. and notice

  986. what

  987. happens

  988. here

  989. Paul

  990. doesn't

  991. say

  992. to

  993. Peter

  994. Peter

  995. you've

  996. broken

  997. the

  998. racism

  999. rule

  1000. he could

  1001. have

  1002. legitimately

  1003. said

  1004. that

  1005. he could

  1006. have

  1007. jumped

  1008. out

  1009. a bunch

  1010. of

  1011. Bible

  1012. verses

  1013. and

  1014. racism

  1015. is wrong

  1016. stop it

  1017. Peter

  1018. you've

  1019. been

  1020. racist

  1021. that may

  1022. in that

  1023. moment

  1024. it may

  1025. have

  1026. restrained

  1027. Peter's

  1028. will

  1029. and his

  1030. behaviour

  1031. but it

  1032. wouldn't

  1033. have

  1034. transformed

  1035. his

  1036. heart

  1037. he

  1038. doesn't

  1039. do it

  1040. he

  1041. certainly

  1042. wants

  1043. Peter

  1044. to stop

  1045. it

  1046. but

  1047. instead

  1048. what he

  1049. does

  1050. is

  1051. in order

  1052. to get

  1053. Peter

  1054. to stop

  1055. it

  1056. he

  1057. chases

  1058. his

  1059. heart

  1060. he

  1061. chases

  1062. Peter's

  1063. heart

  1064. you

  1065. say

  1066. you

  1067. believe

  1068. the

  1069. gospel

  1070. it's

  1071. in your

  1072. mind

  1073. Peter

  1074. but

  1075. has

  1076. it

  1077. changed

  1078. your

  1079. heart

  1080. you

  1081. see

  1082. the

  1083. shared

  1084. core

  1085. value

  1086. of

  1087. all

  1088. humanity

  1089. is

  1090. that

  1091. we

  1092. want

  1093. to

  1094. be

  1095. valued

  1096. we

  1097. want

  1098. to

  1099. know

  1100. that

  1101. our

  1102. lives

  1103. matter

  1104. we

  1105. have

  1106. a

  1107. desperate

  1108. hunger

  1109. to

  1110. feel

  1111. a

  1112. sense

  1113. of

  1114. worthiness

  1115. and

  1116. for

  1117. some

  1118. of us

  1119. on

  1120. father's

  1121. day

  1122. we

  1123. might

  1124. be

  1125. feeling

  1126. that

  1127. our

  1128. fathers

  1129. didn't

  1130. give

  1131. us

  1132. that

  1133. and

  1134. the

  1135. main

  1136. reason

  1137. is

  1138. because

  1139. we

  1140. fear

  1141. that

  1142. we

  1143. don't

  1144. matter

  1145. that

  1146. we

  1147. have

  1148. a

  1149. worthlessness

  1150. and

  1151. it's

  1152. why

  1153. we

  1154. consistently

  1155. turn

  1156. to

  1157. places

  1158. and

  1159. things

  1160. that

  1161. give

  1162. us

  1163. that

  1164. sense

  1165. of

  1166. value

  1167. we

  1168. can

  1169. do

  1170. it

  1171. in

  1172. a

  1173. multitude

  1174. of

  1175. ways

  1176. for

  1177. some

  1178. of us

  1179. it's

  1180. education

  1181. romance

  1182. the

  1183. need

  1184. to

  1185. have

  1186. a

  1187. romantic

  1188. relationship

  1189. family

  1190. in

  1191. every

  1192. case

  1193. we

  1194. are

  1195. attempting

  1196. to

  1197. justify

  1198. ourselves

  1199. we're

  1200. trying

  1201. to

  1202. show

  1203. ourselves

  1204. that

  1205. I

  1206. matter

  1207. and

  1208. Peter

  1209. makes

  1210. the

  1211. mistake

  1212. here

  1213. of

  1214. doing

  1215. that

  1216. his

  1217. Jewishness

  1218. is

  1219. biggest

  1220. is his

  1221. biggest

  1222. identity

  1223. marker

  1224. in this

  1225. moment

  1226. something

  1227. other than

  1228. the gospel

  1229. of Jesus

  1230. Christ

  1231. is his

  1232. new

  1233. identity

  1234. here

  1235. it's

  1236. his

  1237. biggest

  1238. thing

  1239. it's

  1240. the

  1241. thing

  1242. that

  1243. makes

  1244. him

  1245. feel

  1246. like

  1247. he

  1248. matters

  1249. and

  1250. it's

  1251. a

  1252. daily

  1254. for

  1255. us

  1256. all

  1484. fellowship

  1485. with

  1486. them

  1487. we

  1488. don't

  1489. really

  1490. become

  1491. friends

  1492. with

  1493. them

  1494. we

  1495. don't

  1496. socialize

  1497. with

  1498. them

  1499. we

  1500. don't

  1501. share

  1502. our

  1503. lives

  1504. with

  1505. them

  1506. our

  1507. homes

  1508. with

  1509. our

  1510. possessions

  1511. with

  1512. them

  1513. we

  1514. keep

  1515. our

  1516. relationships

  1517. formal

  1518. and

  1519. see

  1520. people

  1521. and see

  1522. people

  1523. and

  1524. none

  1525. of it

  1526. is in

  1527. line

  1528. with

  1529. the

  1530. gospel

  1531. none

  1532. of it

  1533. is

  1534. walking

  1535. straight

  1536. with

  1537. the

  1538. gospel

  1539. without

  1540. the

  1541. gospel

  1542. our

  1543. hearts

  1544. have

  1545. to

  1546. manufacture

  1547. self

  1548. esteem

  1549. by

  1550. comparing

  1551. the

  1552. group

  1553. I

  1554. belong

  1555. to

  1556. with

  1557. all

  1558. other

  1559. groups

  1560. and

  1561. naturally

  1562. whichever

  1563. group

  1564. I

  1565. belong

  1566. to

  1567. is

  1568. the

  1569. most

  1570. superior

  1571. group

  1572. I'm

  1573. using

  1574. the word

  1575. I

  1576. there

  1577. you know

  1578. for all

  1579. of us

  1580. not

  1581. me

  1582. personally

  1583. but the

  1584. gospel

  1585. tells us

  1586. we are

  1587. all

  1588. unclean

  1589. without

  1590. Christ

  1591. and in

  1592. Christ

  1593. all

  1594. clean

  1595. we not

  1596. only

  1597. don't have

  1598. the right

  1599. to feel

  1600. superior

  1601. to anyone

  1602. else

  1603. in the

  1604. gospel

  1605. we don't

  1606. have the

  1607. need

  1608. for it

  1609. either

  1610. the

  1611. gospel

  1612. is all

  1613. we need

  1614. the

  1615. gospel

  1616. is the

  1617. only

  1618. form

  1619. of

  1620. worth

  1621. and

  1622. value

  1623. that's

  1624. not

  1625. achieved

  1626. it is

  1627. received

  1628. it

  1629. doesn't

  1630. go

  1631. up

  1632. and

  1633. down

  1634. based

  1635. on

  1636. my

  1637. performance

  1638. in

  1639. the

  1640. last

  1641. week

  1642. or

  1643. the

  1644. last

  1645. month

  1646. the

  1647. gospel

  1648. is

  1649. the

  1650. end

  1651. of

  1652. every

  1653. struggle

  1654. in

  1655. this

  1656. matter

  1657. the

  1658. gospel

  1659. is

  1660. the

  1661. center

  1662. of

  1663. the

  1664. Christian

  1665. faith

  1666. it

  1667. is

  1668. the

  1669. center

  1670. of

  1671. our

  1672. lives

  1673. the

  1674. gospel

  1675. must

  1676. not

  1677. just

  1678. be

  1679. something

  1680. that

  1681. we

  1682. wrestle

  1683. with

  1684. in

  1685. our

  1686. minds

  1687. it's

  1688. something

  1689. that

  1690. must

  1691. sit

  1692. firmly

  1693. in

  1694. our

  1695. hearts

  1696. and

  1697. change

  1698. our

  1699. affections

  1700. our

  1701. heart

  1702. and

  1703. my

  1704. heart

  1705. needs

  1706. is

  1707. thinking

  1708. about

  1709. the

  1710. gospel

  1711. praying

  1712. about

  1713. the

  1714. gospel

  1715. rejoicing

  1716. in

  1717. the

  1718. gospel

  1719. singing

  1720. about

  1721. the

  1722. gospel

  1723. and

  1724. doing

  1725. that

  1726. in

  1727. every

  1728. area

  1729. of

  1730. our

  1731. lives

  1732. and

  1733. right

  1734. down

  1735. to

  1736. the

  1737. very

  1738. depths

  1739. of

  1740. our

  1741. being

  1742. the

  1743. image

  1744. I

  1745. have

  1746. here

  1747. is

  1748. a

  1749. snack

  1750. food

  1751. you know

  1752. like a

  1753. vending

  1754. machine

  1755. you know

  1756. a Coke

  1757. drink

  1758. machine

  1759. thing

  1760. and

  1761. you put

  1762. a coin

  1763. I've

  1764. had this

  1765. happen

  1766. it's

  1767. very

  1768. annoying

  1769. put a

  1770. coin

  1771. in

  1772. and

  1773. it

  1774. disappears

  1775. but

  1776. you

  1777. don't

  1778. hear

  1779. the

  1780. clunk

  1781. where

  1782. it's

  1783. actually

  1784. useful

  1785. for

  1786. you

  1787. and

  1788. I

  1789. don't

  1790. know

  1791. you

  1792. kick

  1793. the

  1794. thing

  1795. and

  1796. whack

  1797. it

  1798. you

  1799. try

  1800. to

  1801. get

  1802. the

  1803. coin

  1804. so

  1805. you

  1806. can

  1807. get

  1808. the

  1809. drink

  1810. you

  1811. just

  1812. paid

  1813. for

  1814. or

  1815. a

  1816. chocolate

  1817. bar

  1818. and

  1819. you

  1820. desperately

  1821. wanting

  1822. this

  1823. thing

  1824. that's

  1825. the

  1826. image

  1827. I

  1828. have

  1829. here

  1830. the

  1831. coin

  1832. needs

  1833. to

  1834. go

  1835. in

  1836. not

  1837. just

  1838. here

  1839. it

  1840. needs

  1841. to

  1842. go

  1843. clunk

  1844. the

  1845. gospel

  1846. needs

  1847. to

  1848. not

  1849. just

  1850. come

  1851. in

  1852. here

  1853. the

  1854. gospel

  1855. needs

  1856. to

  1857. go

  1858. clunk

  1859. that's

  1860. when

  1861. you

  1862. get

  1863. the

  1864. goods

  1865. has

  1866. my

  1867. this

  1868. is

  1869. unfortunate

  1870. I

  1871. think

  1872. but I

  1873. think

  1874. the

  1875. coin

  1876. hasn't

  1877. dropped

  1878. for so

  1879. many

  1880. people

  1881. sitting

  1882. in

  1883. so

  1884. many

  1885. churches

  1886. the

  1887. gospel

  1888. sits

  1889. in

  1890. our

  1891. heads

  1892. as

  1893. a

  1894. set

  1895. of

  1896. propositions

  1897. that

  1898. must

  1899. be

  1900. defended

  1901. but

  1902. it

  1903. needs

  1904. to

  1905. drop

  1906. into

  1907. our

  1908. hearts

  1909. and

  1910. transform

  1911. our

  1912. lives

  1913. if

  1914. the

  1915. gospel

  1916. is at

  1917. the

  1918. center

  1919. of

  1920. your

  1921. life

  1922. that's

  1923. my

  1924. question

  1925. is

  1926. the

  1927. gospel

  1928. at

  1929. the

  1930. center

  1931. of

  1932. your

  1933. life

  1934. in

  1935. such

  1936. a

  1937. way

  1938. that

  1939. you

  1940. are

  1941. orthopedio

  1942. walking

  1943. straight

  1944. with

  1945. the

  1946. gospel

  1947. well

  1948. that's

  1949. the

  1950. heart

  1951. of the

  1952. gospel

  1953. center

  1954. of the

  1955. gospel

  1956. now

  1957. the

  1958. power

  1959. of the

  1960. gospel

  1961. verse

  1962. 20

  1963. I

  1964. have

  1965. been

  1966. crucified

  1967. with

  1968. Christ

  1969. and I

  1970. no

  1971. longer

  1972. live

  1973. but

  1974. Christ

  1975. lives

  1976. in

  1977. me

  1978. the

  1979. life

  1980. I

  1981. now

  1982. live

  1983. in

  1984. the

  1985. body

  1986. I

  1987. live

  1988. by

  1989. faith

  1990. in

  1991. the

  1992. son

  1993. of

  1994. God

  1995. who

  1996. loved

  1997. me

  1998. and

  1999. gave

  2000. himself

  2001. for

  2002. me

  2003. see

  2004. there's

  2005. a weird

  2006. paradox

  2007. in

  2008. these

  2009. verses

  2010. I

  2011. no

  2012. longer

  2013. live

  2014. but

  2015. Christ

  2016. lives

  2017. in

  2018. me

  2019. he

  2020. says

  2021. I

  2022. don't

  2023. live

  2024. because

  2025. Christ

  2026. does

  2027. and

  2028. then

  2029. he

  2030. says

  2031. the

  2032. life

  2033. I

  2034. now

  2035. live

  2036. seems

  2037. like

  2038. a

  2039. contradiction

  2040. I

  2041. no

  2042. longer

  2043. live

  2044. and

  2045. the

  2046. life

  2047. I

  2048. now

  2049. live

  2050. and

  2051. Christian

  2052. the

  2053. old

  2054. life

  2055. is

  2056. gone

  2057. it

  2058. is

  2059. hidden

  2060. in

  2061. Christ

  2062. it

  2063. has

  2064. disappeared

  2065. Jesus

  2066. becomes

  2067. our

  2068. worth

  2069. our

  2070. value

  2071. but

  2072. at

  2073. the

  2074. same

  2075. time

  2076. we

  2077. live

  2078. the

  2079. same

  2080. life

  2081. but

  2082. now

  2083. out of

  2084. gratitude

  2085. to

  2086. him

  2087. and

  2088. the

  2089. gospel

  2090. has

  2091. the

  2092. power

  2093. to

  2094. change

  2095. the

  2096. motivations

  2097. of

  2098. your

  2099. heart

  2100. it

  2101. changes

  2102. your

  2103. personal

  2104. identity

  2105. it

  2106. changes

  2107. your

  2108. social

  2109. identity

  2110. it

  2111. changes

  2112. every

  2113. identity

  2114. about

  2115. you

  2116. as a

  2117. church

  2118. our

  2119. vision

  2120. is not

  2121. to conform

  2122. people to

  2123. certain

  2124. moral

  2125. standards

  2126. even

  2127. biblical

  2128. moral

  2129. standards

  2130. our

  2131. vision

  2132. is not

  2133. to

  2134. constrain

  2135. people's

  2136. actions

  2137. in this

  2138. church

  2139. or outside

  2140. this

  2141. church

  2142. in society

  2143. our

  2144. vision

  2145. is for

  2146. hearts

  2147. to be

  2148. changed

  2149. by the

  2150. power

  2151. of the

  2152. gospel

  2153. as

  2154. Paul

  2155. went

  2156. after

  2157. Peter's

  2158. heart

  2159. our

  2160. vision

  2161. is to

  2162. go

  2163. after

  2164. hearts

  2165. if

  2166. people

  2167. can see

  2168. the

  2169. worth

  2170. and the

  2171. value

  2172. of the

  2173. Lord

  2174. Jesus

  2175. and the

  2176. worth

  2177. and the

  2178. value

  2179. he gives

  2180. us

  2181. in the

  2182. gospel

  2183. it

  2184. changes

  2185. everything

  2186. in

  2187. life

  2188. this

  2189. is our

  2190. passion

  2191. at

  2192. St.

  2193. Paul's

  2194. this

  2195. is our

  2196. motivation

  2197. to

  2198. God's

  2199. God's

  2200. word

  2201. it

  2202. our attitude to leadership.

2203. It changes our attitude to even ourselves

  2204. and our own hearts.

2205. And in that sense, when that happens,

2206. we become truly transcultural when that happens.

2207. A church that exists, that reflects,

2208. that embraces, that enjoys a rich cultural diversity

2209. and yet because of the power of the gospel,

2210. we rise above all of those things,

  2211. our Jewishness, our gentleness

2212. and whatever else you want to attach to that

2213. and we form a new community in Christ

2214. with a new set of gospel-shaped values

2215. that we're pursuing because we are his much-loved children.

2216. That's what it means to be transcultural.

  2217. That's our vision.

2218. It is worth us remembering as we close up

2219. that Paul is speaking still in this moment to Peter,

  2220. the great apostle Peter.

2221. We are not above receiving this rebuke from Paul ourselves.

2222. Paul finishes by reminding Peter here

2223. that the whole of the Christian life

2224. is about living in line with the gospel

2225. in all areas of your life

2226. for the whole of your lives.

2227. We must continue on as Christians

2228. as we started as Christians,

2229. as we begin by the gospel of grace,

2230. so we continue with the gospel of grace

2231. and so we finish with the gospel of grace.

2232. As Paul affirms here in verse 21,

2233. Do not set aside the grace of God

2234. for if righteousness could be attained through the law,

  2235. Christ died for nothing.

2236. There is no other gospel.

2237. You can't add to it.

2238. You add, you nullify it.

  2239. It becomes nothing.

2240. Jesus Christ either does everything for you

2241. or he does nothing for you.

2242. We cannot combine our merit and his grace

2243. and end up with a better product,

  2244. a better righteousness.

2245. If our right standing before God

2246. is in any way contributed to by our merit,

2247. then Jesus' death is meaningless in history

2248. and it's meaningless for you personally right now.

2249. And yet when we look down on other people,

  2250. we're adding to it.

  2251. We're adding to it.

2252. It's coming from a heart that says,

  2253. I'm superior.

2254. It's not coming from the gospel.

2255. It's coming from a heart that says,

  2256. I'm superior.

2257. Let me just drive this home for you.

  2258. We can't contribute anything.

2259. Imagine for a moment that your house was on fire

2260. but your whole family managed to escape

2261. and you're on the front yard

  2262. and I come over.

2263. I come running over to see what I could do

2264. and you're all on the front yard.

  2265. Your dog, your cat,

2266. you've got goldfish out and everything.

2267. You're all on the front yard.

  2268. You're all safe.

2269. And I say to you,

2270. let me show you how much I love you.

2271. And I run into the house and I die.

  2272. And you would go,

  2273. well, that was weird.

  2274. That's tragic.

  2275. That's stupid.

2276. What a pointless waste of life.

2277. Imagine your house was on fire

  2278. and you're trapped inside

  2279. and I call,

  2280. I come running over

  2281. and I call out,

2282. let me show you how much I love you.

  2283. And I run in

  2284. and I rescue you.

2285. I managed to save the whole family,

2286. the cat, the goldfish, everything,

  2287. but I perished myself.

2288. You would think that was true life.

  2289. That was true love

2290. to give his life for us.

2291. If we could get ourselves

  2292. on the front lawn,

2293. if we could save ourselves

  2294. in any measure whatsoever,

  2295. Christ died for nothing.

  2296. It was pointless.

  2297. It means nothing.

2298. If on the other hand,

2299. we realize that we cannot save ourselves,

  2300. his death means everything.

  2301. It means so much

  2302. that we will spend

2303. the rest of our lives

  2304. for the one

2305. who has given himself for us

2306. in joyful service of him,

  2307. bringing our whole lives

2308. into line with his precious gospel,

  2309. or for patio,

  2310. straight walking with him.

  2311. Amen.

  2312. Amen.

  2313. Amen.

  2314. Amen.
