  1. When Sam asked me to choose a week to preach,

  2. I just chose any week that was free.

  3. I didn't realize it was going to be on Hagar and Sarah.

  4. It's a pretty difficult passage.

  5. And I also remembered about three months ago,

  6. at heartbeat, Steve said that we should really dig into the Bible.

  7. And he read through the passage in Hagar and Sarah

  8. and found out something that he never found out before.

  9. So I've got double pressure now.

  10. Hard passage and Steve saying that he understood this clearly.

  11. So I feel a bit intimidated right now.

  12. I think it's more important that it's not just because that is a hard passage

  13. or what Steve has understood, because it's God's Word.

  14. So let us pray to help us understand it and help us to live in light of it.

  15. Let's pray.

  16. Dear God, we thank you for your Word.

  17. Pray that we will submit before your Word.

  18. Pray that you can help me to speak clearly

  19. and be faithful to your Word.

  20. And that we will live in light of what you say

  21. and believe in what it says.

  22. In Jesus' name we pray.

  23. Amen.

  24. Okay.

  25. So one of the great things about telling the Gospel

  26. to people that have never heard the Gospel before

  27. is that they have a very refreshingly different perspective.

  28. So I'll recall a time I was doing student ministry in China.

  29. I've just learned Mandarin for about three months or so.

  30. I was sharing the Gospel with a uni student in China.

  31. And then I read through a Gospel tract with him

  32. and I basically shared with him how you can become a Christian

  33. and probably quoted John 3.16

  34. and told him that if you believe this honestly

  35. and pray it in your heart with me

  36. then you can become a Christian.

  37. He says,

  38. I can't pray this and become a Christian.

  39. I can't believe in Jesus.

  40. I can't pray this.

  41. And I asked him why.

  42. And he said,

  43. because I have a lecture at 3 p.m.

  44. I said,

  45. how does a lecture at 3 p.m.

  46. affect your decision of becoming a Christian?

  47. He says,

  48. doesn't it say in your tract that 3.16, right,

  49. that you have to pray to believe in Jesus at 3.16?

  50. So you can actually see that maybe a few things.

  51. One thing is that I didn't tell the Gospel clearly.

  52. The other thing is that non-Christians

  53. or young Christians are very eager

  54. to pick up anything about the Christian faith.

  55. And we have to be clear in our communication.

  56. Sometimes it is Gospel

  57. and sometimes it's just my bad habits being transferred to him.

  58. So hopefully we need to communicate the Gospel clearly.

  59. But this is some of the pressures that the Galatians are facing.

  60. Remember the Galatians,

  61. they just believed in the Gospel,

  62. but they've been facing pressure

  63. from a group of false teachers

  64. from the Jewish background.

  65. They've been telling these Galatians

  66. that you have to be circumcised

  67. and you have to observe various fluid laws

  68. in order to receive God's promises.

  69. So it's under this background

  70. that Paul is preaching,

  71. writing this message.

  72. And just like a good sermon,

  73. this passage is in three parts.

  74. So I'll just break down each part for us

  75. and walk through it.

  76. So the first part of this passage

  77. is the history of Hagar and Sarah.

  78. We can see that in verses 22 to 23,

  79. where Paul recounts the history of Hagar and Sarah.

  80. And we know that he's recounting history

  81. by the way he introduces these verses.

  82. At the start of verse 22, he says,

  83. it has been written.

  84. So if you know your New Testament well,

  85. this is how Jesus

  86. and other New Testament writers

  87. quote the Old Testament.

  88. So they want us to look at the Bible carefully,

  89. so let's look through Genesis chapter 16

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  90. and chapter 21.

  91. Before we read that on the screen,

  92. I'll just tell you a little bit of backstory

  93. of what led up to these passages.

  94. So in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  95. we recall that God made a promise to Abram

  96. saying that he will bless Abram

  97. and have a great nation through him.

  98. And Abram is challenged by that message

  99. because he doesn't have any kids.

  100. And in chapter 15,

  101. he basically had some doubts

  102. because God reaffirmed the promises to Abraham,

  103. but Abram said,

  104. I only have adopted heir, Eliezer.

  105. So I can't build a nation through that, right?

  106. But God reassured him

  107. and in chapter 15, verse 6,

  108. it's a very famous verse.

  109. Abraham believed in God

  110. and it was credited to him as righteousness.

  111. So let's look at what Abram did

  112. after that chapter.

  113. I'll read the first half of Genesis chapter 16.

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  114. I'll start from Genesis chapter 16, verse 1.

    Genesis 16:1

  115. Now Sarah, Abram's wife,

  116. had borne him no children,

  117. but she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar.

  118. So she said to Abram,

  119. the Lord has kept me from having children.

  120. Go sleep with my slave.

  121. Perhaps I can build a family through her.

  122. Abram agreed to what Sarah had said.

  123. So after Abram had been living in Canaan for 10 years,

  124. Sarah, his wife,

  125. took the Egyptian slave Hagar

  126. and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

  127. He slept with Hagar and she conceived.

  128. When she knew that she was pregnant,

  129. she began to despise her mistress.

  130. Then Sarah said to Abram,

  131. you are responsible for the wrong I am suffering.

  132. I put my slave in your arms

  133. and now that she knows that she is pregnant,

  134. she despises me.

  135. May the Lord judge between you and me.

  136. Your slave is in your hands,

  137. Abram said.

  138. Do with her whatever you think best.

  139. Then Sarah mistreated Hagar,

  140. so she fled from her.

  141. The angel of the Lord found Hagar

  142. near a spring in the desert

  143. and it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.

  144. And he said,

  145. Hagar, slave of Sarah,

  146. where have you come from

  147. and where are you going?

  148. I'm running from my mistress, Sarah,

  149. she answered.

  150. Then the angel of the Lord told her,

  151. go back to your mistress and submit to her.

  152. The angel added,

  153. I will increase your descendants so much

  154. that there will be too numerous to count.

  155. And we will stop the reading there.

  156. So one of the things that we should notice there

  157. is that God made a promise to Hagar

  158. that a great nation will be also built through her

  159. because she is the wife of Abram.

  160. So if you look at the history of Ishmael

  161. and you look at Islam in particular,

  162. Ishmael is recognised as the forefather of Mohammed.

  163. And Ishmael is head of several Arabian tribes.

  164. So you can actually see from one act of disobedience,

  165. not only did it cause family's drive

  166. between Sarah and Hagar and Abraham,

  167. it actually had a huge impact for the world,

  168. which we experience right now.

  169. Let's read through Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  170. I'll start from the first one again.

  171. Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah,

  172. as he has said,

  173. and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.

  174. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham

  175. in his old age.

  176. And at the very time God has promised him,

  177. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.

  178. When his son Isaac was eight days old,

  179. Abraham circumcised him,

  180. as God commanded him.

  181. Abraham was a hundred years old

  182. when his son Isaac was born to him.

  183. Sarah said,

  184. God has brought me laughter,

  185. and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.

  186. And she added,

  187. Who would have said to Abraham

  188. that Sarah would nurse children,

  189. yet I have born him a son in his old age?

  190. The child grew and was weaned.

  191. And on the day that Isaac weaned,

  192. Abraham held a great feast.

  193. But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian

  194. had born to Abraham was mocking.

  195. And she said to Abraham,

  196. Get rid of the slave woman and her son,

  197. for that woman's son will never share

  198. in the inheritance with my son Isaac.

  199. You can see Hagar and Ishmael is driven away once again.

  200. And just as an aside,

  201. before we go back to Galatians,

  202. we actually want to look at this story as a side note.

  203. We can look at the story of Abraham and Sarah.

  204. The Bible isn't ashamed to hide their flaws.

  205. Abraham is the father of many nations,

  206. is called a man of faith.

  207. But yet in these passages,

  208. we can see that Sarah is the one wearing the pants.

  209. She told Abraham what to do.

  210. She told him to sleep with Hagar

  211. and take her as his wife.

  212. And she drove her away

  213. when things didn't work out.

  214. So if you were to write the Bible

  215. of one of your founding fathers,

  216. if I was to write the account,

  217. I would just write all the stuff,

  218. good stuff about him

  219. and just leave out all the bad stuff

  220. because it's embarrassing.

  221. But that's not what the Bible does.

  222. The Bible isn't ashamed to hide these flaws.

  223. And this is one of the many, many factors

  224. that contribute to the historicity

  225. and the realism of the Bible.

  226. So the Bible is true.

  227. So if you have questions about the Bible,

  228. please talk to me or Sam

  229. and one of the other leaders.

  230. And one of the things that you can talk to,

  231. talk to Ko as well.

  232. Ko loves talking about the historicity of the Bible.

  233. I talked to him a few weeks ago.

  234. He talked to me.

  235. I just sat there and listened for

  236. maybe 10 minutes or so.

  237. And I talked to him just before the service

  238. and listened a bit more again.

  239. So he loves to talk about the Bible.

  240. Please ask him.

  241. And he would love to tell you

  242. why the Bible is true.

  243. And throughout the series,

  244. let's go back to Galatians.

  245. Throughout the series,

  246. we've been talking a lot about the false teachers

  247. and what they have done to the Galatians.

  248. But we have not really explored

  249. their cultural heritage or their motives.

  250. So let's borrow from our vision series

  251. and I'll get the AV team to bring up the iceberg.

  252. The iceberg is,

  253. this is one of the things

  254. that hopefully we'll be exploring

  255. in the vision series.

  256. So one can use an iceberg

  257. to represent what people do.

  258. If you see people's behaviour,

  259. it's like the tip of the iceberg.

  260. It's just a tiny, tiny bit of

  261. what makes them tick.

  262. But beneath that,

  263. there are values and worldviews and beliefs.

  264. And it's those things that drive a person.

  265. So if you look at Genesis

  266. and look at the brief snapshot

  267. of what the false teachers are like,

  268. you can sort of basically tell

  269. what they've been doing.

  270. They've been pressuring the Galatians

  271. to circumcise and observe fruit laws.

  272. But let's explore why they do that.

  273. They would have believed

  274. that they were God's chosen people

  275. because they were descended from Abraham.

  276. They are Jews that are circumcised.

  277. Now they have believed in Jesus.

  278. So in some sense,

  279. you can almost imagine them saying

  280. that we are doubly blessed.

  281. We've got the best of the old

  282. and the best of the new.

  283. We've got both mixed together.

  284. So they believe that they've got

  285. a mix of Judaism and Christianity

  286. that they want to tell other people.

  287. They believe that that is the way

  288. to be blessed.

  289. And they don't want the Galatians

  290. to miss out.

  291. They want them to be circumcised

  292. and observe these laws.

  293. And on the flip side,

  294. they would have thought possibly

  295. that those that didn't undergo circumcision

  296. or observe the fruit laws,

  297. they would have been missing out on things,

  298. missing out on God's promises and blessings.

  299. So it is to this background

  300. that Paul is writing to the Galatians.

  301. And the way that he helps them to understand

  302. is to interpret the historical facts

  303. that we have read in Genesis

  304. as an allegory in verses 24 to 27.

  305. So when I heard the word allegory,

  306. I was a little bit shocked

  307. when I first read it

  308. as a Christian about 20 years ago.

  309. Because I've been taught that

  310. the right way to read the Old Testament

  311. is biblical theology.

  312. You have to read the Bible in context

  313. and you have to read the history

  314. and how it's real and fulfilled through Jesus

  315. and how this is real for us now.

  316. But why is Paul using an allegory?

  317. Is he reading the Bible wrong?

  318. So I guess the answer is,

  319. well, it's probably me, not him.

  320. So let's work out what this means for us.

  321. So let's put this allegory together

  322. and compare Hagar and Sarah side by side.

  323. We have two women, Hagar and Sarah.

  324. Two sons, Ishmael and Isaac.

  325. And this is a story we've just read about

  326. in Genesis 16 and 21.

  327. We also have two covenants,

  328. old and new.

  329. And there are two types of people,

  330. slaves and free.

  331. So Paul, if you look at the book of Galatians,

  332. Paul has already touched on

  333. what the old and new covenants are

  334. in Galatians chapters 2 and 3.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  335. The old covenant is for those

  336. that want to be right before God

  337. by observing the law.

  338. And it says in Galatians chapter 2 verse 10

    Galatians 2:10

  339. that clearly no one is justified

  340. from observing the law.

  341. In fact, those that are trying

  342. to establish a relationship with God

  343. through the law

  344. are cursed and are slaves to the law.

  345. The new covenant is through Jesus

  346. and what he has done for you on the cross,

  347. which gives us freedom.

  348. So imagine what the Jewish false teachers

  349. would have heard when they heard this allegory.

  350. They would have agreed with all these points.

  351. Yes, Hagar and Sarah,

  352. the first four points,

  353. Ishmael, Isaac,

  354. slave and free,

  355. old and new.

  356. If we were to say that there were two cities,

  357. what would you have thought

  358. their expected answer would be?

  359. They would have expected Paul to say

  360. and there are also two cities,

  361. one in Arabia and one in Jerusalem.

  362. The ones that are from Hagar,

  363. they're outside of God's promise.

  364. Whereas the ones that are descended from Sarah,

  365. they're the ones that are truly God's people.

  366. But that's not what Paul says in this passage.

  367. The last contrast is that

  368. there's the earthly Jerusalem

  369. and the heavenly Jerusalem.

  370. Those people that were the Jewish false teachers

  371. would have been shocked by this comparison.

  372. Because after all,

  373. if you think about their worldview,

  374. if you look at the iceberg,

  375. they would have believed truly about Judaism.

  376. They believe that they are God's people

  377. and they believe they are the free ones,

  378. they're the blessed ones.

  379. But what is Paul saying?

  380. The ones that are observing these laws

  381. are in fact slaves.

  382. They are not God's people.

  383. So that's exactly opposite

  384. of what they were expecting.

  385. Paul is implying that their belief system

  386. is completely false.

  387. And so if we understood this passage properly,

  388. we can see that Paul didn't interpret the Bible wrongly

  389. or forget his biblical theology.

  390. Rather, he's using concepts

  391. that are close to the hearts of these false teachers

  392. and what is said by them probably,

  393. that he's using these concepts

  394. to communicate to the Galatians

  395. and the false teachers

  396. and to tell them that

  397. what the false teachers have been preaching is wrong.

  398. So this is not bad exegesis.

  399. It's not bad understanding of the Bible.

  400. In fact, it's actually good communication.

  401. Paul is using things that are close

  402. to the Jewish people's hearts

  403. and turning it on them

  404. to make them understand the gospel.

  405. So having a look at what it means

  406. for the meaning of the allegory,

  407. let's have a look at what it means for the Galatians.

  408. Paul returns to plain language

  409. in verses 29 to 31.

  410. He's not using the allegory anymore

  411. and he just tells the Galatians plainly what to do.

  412. Paul tells the Galatians

  413. to get rid of the false teachers

  414. and to get rid of the false teachings

  415. that they have been bringing to the Galatians.

  416. He quotes Genesis chapter 21, verse 10,

    Genesis 21:10

  417. in verse 30.

  418. Get rid of the slave woman and her son,

  419. for they will never share in the inheritance

  420. with a free woman's son.

  421. We can see that Paul is very serious here.

  422. He doesn't want the Galatians

  423. to mix Judaism and Christianity together.

  424. He doesn't want them to rely on both the law and Christ.

  425. So having had a look at,

  426. had a really brief snapshot

  427. of having a look at what it means for the Galatians,

  428. let's look at what it means for us.

  429. So the way that we can help us

  430. to understand what something is,

  431. is to look at the flip side

  432. and to understand what it is not.

  433. So this passage,

  434. I think one of the things

  435. that it is not telling us to do

  436. is to get rid of our culture completely.

  437. Paul is not saying that

  438. to become a Christian,

  439. you must stop being Chinese or Australian or etc.

  440. I don't know.

  441. Yeah, I should say etc.

  442. But yeah,

  443. Paul is not saying for us

  444. to abandon our culture.

  445. After all,

  446. Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3:28

  447. verse 28,

  448. says that there's neither male or female,

  449. Jews or Greek,

  450. slaves or free.

  451. We are all one in Christ Jesus.

  452. We are not to abandon our culture

  453. when we believe in Jesus,

  454. but we are to be joined together as one body.

  455. And it's also not telling us

  456. to abandon our history.

  457. He's not saying that

  458. the old covenant is bad

  459. because it's just old

  460. and the new covenant is good

  461. because it's new.

  462. If that was true,

  463. I think our last series

  464. is not very useful.

  465. We celebrated history.

  466. We celebrated the history

  467. of the Reformation.

  468. We celebrated the gospel truth

  469. that we've been preserving

  470. for the last 500 years.

  471. What this passage is saying though

  472. is there's one encouragement

  473. and one rebuke.

  474. So the encouragement here is that

  475. just like the Galatians,

  476. we are not Jewish,

  477. I don't think.

  478. We don't have a Jewish background.

  479. So what that means is that

  480. just like the Galatians,

  481. if you believe in the gospel,

  482. you can be just like Sarah's children.

  483. You will belong to the heavenly Jerusalem.

  484. You'll be part of God's people

  485. with his blessing.

  486. And I want to expand this point

  487. a little bit more

  488. by telling you of the stories

  489. that I've encountered

  490. when I've been running through

  491. the Investigating Christianity course,

  492. both once there

  493. and I've been running

  494. another instance on Friday nights.

  495. There have been quite a few ESL students

  496. that have been bringing their kids

  497. to Friday youth

  498. and their parents have been hanging around

  499. and they really want to hear the gospel,

  500. which is really great.

  501. That's why I've been running

  502. the course on Friday nights

  503. in the office.

  504. And both the September course

  505. and that one,

  506. most of the people

  507. are from a Chinese background,

  508. from mainland China,

  509. and they have the same question.

  510. We think,

  511. they phrase a question like this.

  512. We think that

  513. the Christian faith

  514. is a Western religion.

  515. We from China

  516. have no exposure to this.

  517. We come from an atheist background

  518. and we have our Buddhism

  519. and Taoism

  520. and Confucianism.

  521. And I think it's just

  522. you have your Christian faith

  523. for the West

  524. and we have our own faith

  525. in the East.

  526. And it's really hard for us

  527. to believe in the gospel.

  528. The encouragement

  529. from this passage

  530. is that

  531. no matter

  532. what your ethnicity

  533. or your background,

  534. the Christian faith

  535. is for you.

  536. All you have to do

  537. is to believe

  538. in what Jesus has done

  539. for you.

  540. So if you want to know more

  541. about what it means

  542. to believe in Jesus,

  543. please talk to me

  544. or put it on the

  545. communication card.

  546. I would love to talk to you

  547. more about this.

  548. And it is that simple.

  549. No matter what your background is,

  550. you can come to know Christ.

  551. With this news,

  552. there's also,

  553. on the flip side,

  554. there's a reminder

  555. and a rebuke.

  556. So one of the things

  557. that Paul reminds the Galatians

  558. to think about

  559. is to get rid of the slave woman

  560. and to get rid of

  561. the false teachings

  562. and the false teachers.

  563. And one of the things

  564. that we can do is,

  565. if you look at the iceberg,

  566. which has always been there,

  567. is that it's easy for us

  568. to have Christian behaviours.

  569. We'll go to church,

  570. we'll go to Bible study,

  571. and we'll pray

  572. and read the Bible.

  573. But sometimes we have to ask us,

  574. what is the worldview

  575. beneath all these things?

  576. We might even have

  577. some of the values,

  578. like core values

  579. in this church,

  580. they're on the wall,

  581. outside the church.

  582. If you're going to pass away,

  583. you'll hear about the core values.

  584. These are important

  585. to our church

  586. and important to us.

  587. But we have to actually ask us,

  588. right at the bottom,

  589. our worldview.

  590. What is real for us?

  591. Because the great danger

  592. is for us

  593. to mix

  594. our Christian faith

  595. with something

  596. that we believe in.

  597. And I'll actually bring

  598. an illustration from,

  599. I've got one from

  600. the Chinese congregation

  601. I used in the morning.

  602. So,

  603. this is a story

  604. about a pastor,

  605. he's a Canadian Chinese,

  606. and his mum

  607. who is involved

  608. in ancestor worship.

  609. And,

  610. actually this is,

  611. like,

  612. the matter of ancestor worship

  613. and paying respect

  614. to the elders

  615. is not that far

  616. from me.

  617. When I do certain ministry

  618. in China

  619. or when I have to go

  620. to funerals

  621. for non-Christians

  622. in Hong Kong,

  623. we will be pressured

  624. to pay respect

  625. to our ancestors

  626. and to worship

  627. ancestors in the past.

  628. So,

  629. this particular pastor

  630. has a mum

  631. and his mum

  632. has lots of,

  633. like,

  634. Chinese idols

  635. and,

  636. like,

  637. a lot of ancestor

  638. worship places.

  639. I'm not sure

  640. whether you've seen them.

  641. The little red things

  642. with the glowing lights

  643. and you put,

  644. like,

  645. rose pig

  646. and oranges

  647. and other things.

  648. And,

  649. she became a Christian

  650. but she didn't want

  651. to get rid of her,

  652. all her idols

  653. and all these

  654. worship places.

  655. And,

  656. she told her son

  657. this story.

  658. Imagine,

  659. if you've known

  660. your old friend

  661. for a long time

  662. and you've met

  663. a new friend

  664. who is better.

  665. Jesus is this

  666. better friend

  667. and,

  668. it would be really

  669. disloyal of you

  670. just to abandon

  671. all your old friends

  672. just because

  673. you've got a

  674. better friend.

  675. the best way

  676. to do it

  677. is to,

  678. why don't you

  679. just spend time

  680. with your old friends

  681. and spend time

  682. with your new friends

  683. and they'll be

  684. all fine.

  685. And,

  686. that's the way

  687. she thought about

  688. Christianity.

  689. And,

  690. although we won't

  691. laugh at this,

  692. we actually need

  693. to ask ourselves,

  694. is Christ

  695. just a little bit

  696. better

  697. on what you rely on?

  698. Or,

  699. is Christ

  700. at the centre

  701. of your world view?

  702. If Christ

  703. is at the centre,

  704. it will affect

  705. everything else

  706. that you will do.

  707. The values

  708. that we have

  709. outside at the church,

  710. it won't be

  711. just

  712. something you put on,

  713. it's not something

  714. that we are asked

  715. to do,

  716. it will be flowing

  717. out of your heart.

  718. If Christ

  719. is at the centre

  720. of your world view,

  721. what is said

  722. in Galatians chapter 2

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  723. will be true.

  724. It is not

  725. I that live

  726. but Christ

  727. that lives in me.

  728. If it is true,

  729. our behaviours

  730. isn't just something

  731. that we do

  732. on Sundays.

  733. We wouldn't just

  734. come to church

  735. and at the first second

  736. we will just

  737. dash out the door.

  738. I remember

  739. there was a

  740. traditional church

  741. I went to

  742. about 20 years ago.

  743. The pastor

  744. is just standing

  745. at the door

  746. greeting people.

  747. He's expecting

  748. people to leave.

  749. People are

  750. wanting to get

  751. out of the church

  752. and spending

  753. time to do

  754. their own things.

  755. But if we are

  756. keen for the gospel,

  757. we would want

  758. to encourage

  759. our brothers and sisters.

  760. We would want

  761. to tell people

  762. within church

  763. that doesn't

  764. know the gospel yet

  765. how they can

  766. encounter Jesus.

  767. So I actually

  768. want to ask us,

  769. is there anything

  770. that you are

  771. placing along

  772. with Christ

  773. right at the

  774. bottom of the

  775. iceberg

  776. that is real

  777. for you?

  778. It's not,

  779. you're just thinking

  780. that Christ

  781. is a little bit

  782. better than

  783. what you have

  784. here.

  785. If there is,

  786. Paul would

  787. probably ask you

  788. to do the same

  789. thing.

  790. Get rid of

  791. these things.

  792. Get rid of

  793. these things

  794. so that you

  795. can hold

  796. on to Christ.

  797. Believe in

  798. Christ,

  799. hold on to

  800. Christ so

  801. that the

  802. things that

  803. we value,

  804. the things

  805. that we

  806. believe,

  807. the things

  808. that we

  809. do is

  810. actually

  811. flowing from

  812. what you

  813. hold dear

  814. in your

  815. heart.

  816. And I hope

  817. that God

  818. can help

  819. us to do

  820. that.
