  1. But here in today's passage, as Sam has already pointed out,

  2. Paul talks about a freedom that is really very, very different.

  3. This freedom sets us apart from the rest of the world.

  4. It's what is behind discipleship.

  5. It's what will allow Christ's people to reflect the love of Christ

  6. to each other and also to the world.

  7. And if we understand it clearly, it will assist us in growing as disciples of Jesus

  8. and it will transform how we live each day.

  9. And dare I say, it will also make a difference

  10. as to where the Lord takes this church here at Chatswood.

  11. Now, we've been exploring over the last weeks how Paul is challenging the Galatians

  12. to not fall for the wrong teaching by the Judaizers,

  13. not to go back to the way that they were.

  14. They were to remember what they were saved from

  15. and to keep their eyes on Jesus who saves by grace alone,

  16. not by any extra rules or traditions we've seen

  17. where they needed to perform with perfection

  18. because we've also seen time and time again

  19. that to do that you have to be perfect

  20. and it is impossible for any of us to do that.

  21. And we saw in chapter 4 that the Galatians were slaves

  22. but they are now free in Christ,

  23. meaning that everyone who is trusting Jesus is free.

  24. We are no longer slaves.

  25. Colossians 2 tells us that Jesus is no ordinary person.

  26. Many of you will know that already.

  27. He is the Son of God who came to save.

  28. He came from the heavenlies and he broke into this world as a man

  29. because we needed a saviour,

  30. a God who saves us from our sin,

  31. the sin that was taken on himself on the cross

  32. so that we could receive the righteousness

  33. that we did not deserve

  34. and he took the punishment that we did deserve.

  35. This was all to make us free.

  36. Romans 8 tells us that what the law couldn't do,

  37. Jesus did in being a sin offering for us.

  38. And in Corinthians we read,

  39. we implore you as on God's behalf,

  40. be reconciled to God.

  41. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us

  42. so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  43. Or in verse 17 it says,

  44. therefore if anyone is in Christ,

  45. he's a new creation,

  46. the old has gone and the new has gone.

  47. Tim Keller says,

  48. freedom is both the means and the end

  49. of the operation of liberation.

  50. And in Luke 4,

  51. Jesus says,

  52. the spirit of the Lord is upon me

  53. because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  54. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives

  55. and recovering sight to the blind,

  56. to set at liberty those who are oppressed

  57. to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour.

  58. And in Galatians now,

  59. in verse 1 it says,

  60. it is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

  61. Stand firm then,

  62. and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

  63. Now this verse is really a summary of the entire letter to the Galatians.

  64. For freedom,

  65. Christ has freed you.

  66. And then Paul says,

  67. because you have been set free in Christ,

  68. stand firm.

  69. Well, stand firm is a military term.

  70. It means to guard your post,

  71. keep alert,

  72. be strong,

  73. resist attack,

  74. and stay together,

  75. hold the line.

  76. And we do this by Christ-centred Bible saturation,

  77. a core value here at St. Paul's,

  78. and for very, very good reasons it's a core value.

  79. It is standing on,

  80. advancing with,

  81. fighting for,

  82. and resting in God's word,

  83. the word that saves and rescues.

  84. The word sets us free.

  85. Now I know about this truth that we're talking about now.

  86. I know that Jesus has set me free,

  87. and I'm sure many of you also know this with all of your heart as well.

  88. I love the Lord.

  89. I have a good idea,

  90. be it not a complete idea,

  91. that my sin was taken on the cross.

  92. What I have done wrong,

  93. Jesus suffered for it.

  94. My heart's desire is to serve the Lord until my dying breath.

  95. My heart's desire is to be very flexible

  96. and to hold very loosely to any ministry

  97. that I have the pleasure of being part of.

  98. My heart's desire is to see others grow

  99. into being better at any of the ministries,

  100. ministry roles that I am currently involved in.

  101. My heart's desire is to always shine for Jesus

  102. in my thoughts,

  103. in my actions,

  104. in my deeds.

  105. Hmm.

  106. But I don't.

  107. I fail on all of those accounts at various times,

  108. and I'm absolutely certain that you would also.

  109. Now, let me explain something.

  110. Many of you know the word sanctification.

  111. It's a great word.

  112. It rolls off your tongue very nicely.

  113. I like saying it.

  114. But sanctification is that process of being made new in Christ.

  115. And when we acknowledge that we need a saviour

  116. and we repent of our sins

  117. and become part of the family of God,

  118. a great miracle occurs.

  119. We're taken from spiritual darkness

  120. of this world into the light of God.

  121. Our spirits are brought to life in Jesus,

  122. where we were once spiritually dead.

  123. That is called personal sanctification.

  124. This aspect of sanctification

  125. speaks to our being set apart

  126. from the world for God.

  127. It's an instantaneous act of grace.

  128. And we're declared right before God

  129. and we are set apart for God to use.

  130. Ephesians 1.4 says,

  131. For he, God, chose us in him

  132. before the creation of the world

  133. to be holy and blameless in his sight.

  134. 1 Corinthians 6 says,

  135. And that is what some of you were,

  136. but you were washed and you were sanctified.

  137. You were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus

  138. and by the Spirit of our God.

  139. This is positional sanctification.

  140. It's set.

  141. It doesn't change.

  142. But then there is progressive sanctification.

  143. And as the word suggests, it moves.

  144. It is living out what that positional sanctification,

  145. it's about living that out.

  146. It's the process whereby we daily

  147. become more and more like Jesus Christ

  148. through the death of our sin in our lives

  149. as we endeavour to live according to the grace in the gospel.

  150. But we're aware that we all fail.

  151. Romans 7, this is a famous passage

  152. that you would all have heard most probably,

  153. where Paul shares,

  154. I do not do what I want to do,

  155. but what I hate to do.

  156. And if I do what I do not want to do,

  157. I agree that the law is good.

  158. As it is,

  159. it is no longer I myself who do it,

  160. but it is the sin living in me.

  161. So this sounds a bit like a riddle.

  162. But if Paul is confessing that he struggles with sin,

  163. I take it that it's really okay for us also to confess

  164. that we too struggle with sin.

  165. The third sanctification,

  166. I'll come back to the other,

  167. but the third sanctification is perfect sanctification.

  168. It's the glorification of which happens

  169. when Jesus returns

  170. and he makes us perfect to be with him.

  171. And oh, how good will that day be

  172. when Jesus returns

  173. and we are made perfect to live eternally with him.

  174. So we have positional sanctification,

  175. we have progressive,

  176. and we have perfect.

  177. We live in this progressive section here.

  178. The Galatians were saved by grace

  179. and now they are needing to live out

  180. what that looks like.

  181. That's what this middle section is all about.

  182. For the Galatians to obey the law

  183. as being encouraged,

  184. they would be turning away from Christ,

  185. as Paul is suggesting in verses one to four.

  186. But does it mean

  187. that if they obeyed the law,

  188. does that mean

  189. that they would lose their salvation completely,

  190. as it might suggest in verse four,

  191. where Paul says,

  192. if you follow the wrong teaching,

  193. you have fallen away from grace.

  194. Now, interestingly,

  195. Paul knows these Galatians really well

  196. and he has great confidence

  197. that they are not going to turn

  198. their backs away completely.

  199. because we see in verse five,

  200. he says,

  201. but by faith,

  202. we eagerly await

  203. through the spirit,

  204. the righteousness

  205. for which we hope.

  206. He knows that they're going to be

  207. to turn back to Christ.

  208. He has such a confidence

  209. in the Galatians

  210. that they will follow

  211. the gospel of Jesus.

  212. Now, this is a situation

  213. that many of us know

  214. only too well.

  215. We have friends

  216. and we have loved ones

  217. who have declared

  218. a saving faith in Jesus

  219. at some stage in their life,

  220. but they have lost their way

  221. and seemingly lost their faith

  222. and they are far away

  223. from Jesus today.

  224. We want to know,

  225. are they saved?

  226. When Jesus returns,

  227. will Jesus know their name

  228. and call their name

  229. to be his own.

  230. Now, let me say,

  231. first of all,

  232. nobody knows

  233. what really is in the heart

  234. of any individual.

  235. Only God knows that.

  236. But what we do know

  237. is in Romans 8,

  238. for I am convinced

  239. that neither death

  240. nor life,

  241. neither angels

  242. or demons,

  243. neither the present

  244. nor the future,

  245. nor any powers,

  246. neither height

  247. nor depth,

  248. nor anything else

  249. in all creation

  250. will be able

  251. from the love of God

  252. that is in Christ Jesus,

  253. our Lord.

  254. But scripture also tells us

  255. that we have a purpose.

  256. Our progressive sanctification,

  257. that middle bit

  258. that I told you about,

  259. will indeed confirm

  260. if the first bit,

  261. the positional sanctification,

  262. was real.

  263. Okay, so it's important.

  264. What we're living in right now

  265. is really important.

  266. That is,

  267. the way we live

  268. reflects

  269. if we are truly saved.

  270. Now, let me state

  271. very, very clearly

  272. that that does not mean

  273. that a person

  274. cannot turn back

  275. to the gospel

  276. they heard once

  277. when they were younger

  278. or whenever

  279. and that stops them

  280. from repenting

  281. of living far away

  282. from God.

  283. That can happen.

  284. The story of the prodigal son

  285. is a typical case in point.

  286. That son,

  287. he turned away

  288. from his father,

  289. you'll remember.

  290. He lived a wild life,

  291. but he realised

  292. he was foolish

  293. and he returned

  294. to the father

  295. with a heart

  296. filled with repentance

  297. and was welcomed

  298. with open arms.

  299. You see,

  300. there are many

  301. who live

  302. as if it doesn't matter

  303. what they do.

  304. They believe

  305. that once

  306. they said a prayer

  307. to Jesus,

  308. a prayer of repentance,

  309. and because Christ

  310. offers forgiveness

  311. and freedom,

  312. they think

  313. it's okay

  314. to live

  315. in any way

  316. they would like to

  317. from that moment on.

  318. I certainly have friends

  319. who live that way.

  320. I have friends

  321. who believe

  322. that they are Christians

  323. because they said a prayer

  324. and they were baptised,

  325. but they choose

  326. not to fellowship

  327. with any other Christian people.

  328. They choose

  329. not to actually

  330. read their Bible.

  331. They choose

  332. to live a promiscuous life,

  333. and yet

  334. they still

  335. are living

  336. under

  337. the wrong

  338. attitude

  339. of thinking

  340. that the grace

  341. that God

  342. actually had given them

  343. that that will cover

  344. all of their sin

  345. for all times.

  346. Now,

  347. earlier I mentioned

  348. the older brother

  349. of the prodigal son.

  350. Well,

  351. the younger brother

  352. equally

  353. fell for the trap

  354. of living

  355. how he wanted to.

  356. he had a hard heart

  357. and had

  358. an expectant heart

  359. of having everything

  360. come to him.

  361. He too

  362. was under sin,

  363. and he took advantage

  364. of the grace

  365. that was given

  366. to him

  367. by his father

  368. as well.

  369. This

  370. taking advantage,

  371. this living

  372. as if it doesn't

  373. matter

  374. what I do,

  375. this is called

  376. living by licence.

  377. It's

  378. by rejecting

  379. the call

  380. to live

  381. a holy life.

  382. Verse 13

  383. in our passage

  384. says,

  385. you, my brothers,

  386. were called

  387. to be free,

  388. but do not

  389. use your freedom

  390. to indulge

  391. the sinful nature,

  392. rather serve

  393. one another

  394. in love.

  395. Freedom

  396. in Christ

  397. is not

  398. a freedom

  399. to sin

  400. as we saw

  401. before,

  402. but it's a freedom

  403. from sin.

  404. It's not

  405. a freedom

  406. to ignore

  407. Christ

  408. and his word.

  409. John 14

  410. says,

  411. if you love

  412. me,

  413. you will

  414. keep my

  415. commandments.

  416. Anyone

  417. who loves

  418. me

  419. will obey

  420. my teaching.

  421. My father

  422. will love

  423. them,

  424. and we

  425. will come

  426. to them

  427. and make

  428. our home

  429. with them.

  430. Anyone

  431. who does

  432. not love

  433. me

  434. will not

  435. obey

  436. my teaching.

  437. These

  438. words

  439. you hear

  440. are not

  441. my own.

  442. They

  443. belong

  444. to the

  445. father

  446. who sent

  447. me.

  448. The

  449. Galatians,

  450. on the

  451. other

  452. hand,

  453. were being

  454. encouraged

  455. to live

  456. by legalism

  457. and add

  458. rules

  459. and regulations

  460. to the

  461. gospel.

  462. Licence

  463. and legalism

  464. are different

  465. sides of

  466. the same

  467. coin.

  468. They are

  469. both enemies

  470. of the

  471. gospel of

  472. freedom.

  473. Living

  474. either by

  475. license

  476. or by

  477. legalism

  478. will not

  479. save you.

  480. There

  481. is only

  482. one

  483. sure

  484. way

  485. to

  486. live.

  487. It

  488. is the

  489. gospel

  490. of

  491. freedom.

  492. That

  493. is freedom

  494. from our

  495. sin but

  496. it is

  497. also

  498. freedom

  499. to

  500. something.

  501. What

  502. is this

  503. freedom

  504. to?

  505. Well,

  506. it's a

  507. freedom

  508. to love.

  509. Verse

  510. 6 says,

  511. for in

  512. Christ

  513. Jesus

  514. neither

  515. circumcision

  516. nor

  517. uncircumcision

  518. has any

  519. value.

  520. The

  521. only thing

  522. that counts

  523. is faith

  524. expressing

  525. itself

  526. through

  527. love.

  528. The

  529. saving

  530. gospel

  531. doesn't

  532. give us

  533. license to

  534. live how

  535. we want.

  536. It gives

  537. a freedom.

  538. It gives

  539. ability and

  540. desire to

  541. live how

  542. God wants.

  543. As

  544. Christians,

  545. we do

  546. not attempt

  547. to produce

  548. perfect

  549. righteousness

  550. in our

  551. own lives

  552. by our

  553. own

  554. efforts.

  555. hope is

  556. not in

  557. ourselves.

  558. It is

  559. in Christ

  560. and Christ

  561. alone.

  562. More

  563. than that,

  564. the

  565. Christian

  566. life is

  567. hoping for

  568. what we

  569. already

  570. have.

  571. This

  572. sounds

  573. really

  574. very

  575. strange

  576. to the

  577. world

  578. because

  579. worldly

  580. hope is

  581. not a

  582. gospel

  583. hope.

  584. Worldly

  585. hope says,

  586. oh,

  587. I hope

  588. this works

  589. out.

  590. I hope

  591. it doesn't

  592. rain

  593. tomorrow

  594. because I

  595. want to

  596. do

  597. something.

  598. Gospel

  599. hope says,

  600. I know

  601. that this

  602. will work

  603. out.

  604. It means

  605. that we

  606. have total

  607. assurance.

  608. Paul uses

  609. it in

  610. verse 5

  611. simply

  612. meaning

  613. that we're

  614. awaiting

  615. this

  616. righteousness.

  617. We don't

  618. work or

  619. strive for

  620. it.

  621. We know

  622. that it

  623. is coming

  624. so we

  625. can wait

  626. eagerly

  627. and not

  628. anxiously.

  629. What is

  630. it that

  631. we're

  632. awaiting?

  633. It is

  634. a

  635. completely

  636. right

  637. record

  638. and right

  639. relationship

  640. with God.

  641. Paul is

  642. saying that

  643. we can

  644. live

  645. today

  646. in the

  647. light

  648. of our

  649. certain

  650. hope,

  651. a

  652. guaranteed

  653. future,

  654. a

  655. glorification

  656. and be

  657. welcomed

  658. by

  659. God

  660. and his

  661. open arms

  662. one day.

  663. God

  664. has

  665. made

  666. us

  667. heirs.

  668. It

  669. doesn't

  670. mean

  671. that we're

  672. left

  673. sitting

  674. on our

  675. hands

  676. doing

  677. nothing

  678. though.

  679. By

  680. faith

  681. the

  682. Holy

  683. Spirit

  684. enables

  685. us

  686. to

  687. experience

  688. the

  689. presence

  690. of

  691. Christ

  692. in

  693. the

  694. here

  695. and

  696. now.

  697. By

  698. faith

  699. the

  700. Holy

  701. Spirit

  702. enables

  703. us

  704. to

  705. enjoy

  706. the

  707. commands

  708. of

  709. Christ

  710. and

  711. these

  712. commands

  713. are not

  714. burdensome

  715. but they

  716. are free.

  717. Freedom

  718. in Christ

  719. is

  720. demonstrated

  721. through

  722. love

  723. and

  724. selfless

  725. service

  726. to

  727. others.

  728. Gospel

  729. truth

  730. is never

  731. limited.

  732. Gospel

  733. truth is

  734. never

  735. intended

  736. to

  737. only

  738. be

  739. believed.

  740. Gospel

  741. truth

  742. is

  743. always

  744. intended

  745. to be

  746. obeyed

  747. and

  748. shared.

  749. Let me

  750. say it

  751. again.

  752. Gospel

  753. truth

  754. is never

  755. intended

  756. to just

  757. be

  758. believed,

  759. to just

  760. be head

  761. knowledge

  762. that you

  763. hold on

  764. to

  765. for

  766. yourself.

  767. Gospel

  768. truth

  769. is always

  770. intended

  771. to be

  772. obeyed

  773. and

  774. shared.

  775. Love

  776. for God

  777. shows

  778. itself

  779. in our

  780. love

  781. for

  782. others.

  783. The

  784. two

  785. are

  786. inseparable.

  787. Verse

  788. 14 says

  789. the entire

  790. law

  791. is summed

  792. up in

  793. a single

  794. command,

  795. love your

  796. neighbour

  797. as

  798. yourself.

  799. How do

  800. we do

  801. this?

  802. Living

  803. in freedom

  804. to

  805. love,

  806. loving

  807. others

  808. is

  809. serving

  810. others.

  811. It's

  812. about

  813. not

  814. wanting

  815. everything

  816. to be

  817. about

  818. me.

  819. Now

  820. many of

  821. you know

  822. that I

  823. have a

  824. six-year-old

  825. grandson,

  826. gorgeous

  827. Lincoln,

  828. and I

  829. had the

  830. joy of

  831. having

  832. Lincoln

  833. stay with

  834. me for

  835. a couple

  836. of days

  837. in the

  838. holidays.

  839. Now

  840. Link

  841. is a

  842. typical

  843. six-year-old.

  844. His

  845. world

  846. revolves

  847. around

  848. him.

  849. He

  850. wants

  851. everything

  852. for

  853. himself,

  854. be it

  855. food,

  856. be it

  857. time,

  858. be it

  859. goods,

  860. be it

  861. anything,

  862. he's a

  863. typical

  864. six-year-old.

  865. He's a

  866. gorgeous

  867. boy,

  868. but he's

  869. a typical

  870. six-year-old.

  871. The sad

  872. thing is

  873. many of

  874. us

  875. adults

  876. want to

  877. live like

  878. the

  879. six-year-old.

  880. I want

  881. to live

  882. like a

  883. six-year-old

  884. sometimes.

  885. I want

  886. to

  887. actually

  888. but that's

  889. not what

  890. this is

  891. about.

  892. Gospel

  893. freedom

  894. actually

  895. helps us

  896. to grow

  897. up to

  898. be the

  899. adult,

  900. not the

  901. six-year-old.

  902. Our

  903. world

  904. doesn't

  905. revolve

  906. around

  907. just

  908. us.

  909. Now

  910. being

  911. free in

  912. Christ

  913. calls for

  914. something

  915. radically

  916. different.

  917. Christ

  918. empowers

  919. a change

  920. in us

  921. to love

  922. in such

  923. a way

  924. that is

  925. counter

  926. cultural

  927. to what

  928. society

  929. thinks.

  930. Christian

  931. freedom

  932. is about

  933. discipleship.

  934. It allows

  935. the world

  936. to see

  937. Jesus

  938. in us

  939. because of

  940. the way

  941. that we

  942. love each

  943. other and

  944. the way

  945. that we

  946. love the

  947. world.

  948. That is

  949. an awesome

  950. responsibility

  951. my friends

  952. but let me

  953. say the

  954. great thing

  955. is that

  956. God doesn't

  957. leave us

  958. to do it

  959. all on

  960. our own.

  961. We have

  962. the Holy

  963. Spirit to

  964. help us.

  965. Christian

  966. love is

  967. saying that

  968. you would

  969. deny

  970. yourself

  971. and give

  972. whatever is

  973. needed to

  974. another

  975. person.

  976. There are

  977. plenty of

  978. ways that

  979. we can

  980. do this.

  981. It can

  982. range from

  983. a simple

  984. smile that

  985. you might

  986. give to

  987. somebody who

  988. serves you

  989. morning tea.

  990. It might

  991. be a smile

  992. for a

  993. shopkeeper.

  994. That's

  995. Christian

  996. love.

  997. But it

  998. might be

  999. bigger than

  1000. that.

  1001. It might

  1002. be offering

  1003. to provide

  1004. a meal to

  1005. somebody who

  1006. is having

  1007. a tough

  1008. time and

  1009. just to

  1010. give them

  1011. a little

  1012. special treat.

  1013. It might

  1014. actually be

  1015. coming and

  1016. helping with

  1017. kids here

  1018. at Kids

  1019. Church.

  1020. It might

  1021. be helping

  1022. with kids

  1023. at ESL

  1024. or even

  1025. helping with

  1026. ESL.

  1027. And let me

  1028. just plug,

  1029. ESL desperately

  1030. needs a

  1031. helper on

  1032. Friday mornings

  1033. because we've

  1034. now got

  1035. two families,

  1036. so three

  1037. children,

  1038. coming to

  1039. ESL and

  1040. we cannot

  1041. actually have

  1042. the second

  1043. mum come

  1044. if we don't

  1045. have a second

  1046. person looking

  1047. after the

  1048. kids.

  1049. So that

  1050. would be

  1051. terrible if

  1052. we had to

  1053. tell that

  1054. mum that

  1055. she can't

  1056. come.

  1057. But we

  1058. can do

  1059. things that

  1060. would actually

  1061. help in

  1062. many and

  1063. different ways.

  1064. Here at

  1065. St Paul's,

  1066. you will find

  1067. in our

  1068. vision series

  1069. an abundance

  1070. of ways in

  1071. which you

  1072. can serve

  1073. here at

  1074. church.

  1075. But it's

  1076. not just

  1077. serving here

  1078. at church

  1079. and loving

  1080. here at

  1081. church,

  1082. it's about

  1083. loving out

  1084. in the

  1085. world also.

  1086. So there's

  1087. many,

  1088. many ways.

  1089. Might I

  1090. also say

  1091. that we

  1092. are also

  1093. encouraged

  1094. to love

  1095. and to

  1096. love means

  1097. that we

  1098. will resolve

  1099. any conflict

  1100. quickly so

  1101. that sin

  1102. does not

  1103. fester and

  1104. we do

  1105. not get

  1106. a bitter

  1107. heart.

  1108. Now,

  1109. we have

  1110. set as

  1111. one of

  1112. our core

  1113. values,

  1114. humble

  1115. authenticity,

  1116. where we

  1117. want to

  1118. deal with

  1119. hurt quickly

  1120. and appropriately

  1121. and with

  1122. the appropriate

  1123. people.

  1124. And so

  1125. that is

  1126. another way

  1127. that we

  1128. actually show

  1129. that we

  1130. love.

  1131. If we

  1132. cannot

  1133. resolve

  1134. conflict

  1135. here in

  1136. our church

  1137. at St Paul's,

  1138. we have

  1139. absolutely no

  1140. chance of

  1141. being able to

  1142. reflect how

  1143. to solve

  1144. conflict out

  1145. in the

  1146. world.

  1147. So we

  1148. need to

  1149. do it

  1150. well here.

  1151. That's

  1152. humble

  1153. authenticity,

  1154. one of

  1155. our core

  1156. values.

  1157. And,

  1158. you know,

  1159. sort of,

  1160. there is

  1161. no end

  1162. to how

  1163. we can

  1164. love and

  1165. serve,

  1166. my friends.

  1167. We need

  1168. to understand

  1169. that this

  1170. freedom we

  1171. have is

  1172. because we

  1173. serve a

  1174. new king.

  1175. We are

  1176. not obligated

  1177. to return

  1178. to our

  1179. old ways

  1180. of living.

  1181. to be

  1182. fooled into

  1183. living by

  1184. license or

  1185. by legalism

  1186. as the

  1187. Galatians were

  1188. being encouraged

  1189. to do is

  1190. just truly

  1191. foolishness.

  1192. We need to

  1193. understand that

  1194. we are going

  1195. to be tempted

  1196. because Jesus

  1197. hasn't returned

  1198. just yet

  1199. to take us

  1200. home.

  1201. And so in

  1202. the meantime,

  1203. when we're in

  1204. this middle

  1205. section, we are

  1206. going to be

  1207. tempted.

  1208. and when

  1209. Jesus

  1210. returns, he

  1211. will make us

  1212. totally new,

  1213. he will make

  1214. us totally

  1215. perfect,

  1216. he will

  1217. sanctify us.

  1218. But for

  1219. now, we

  1220. live in this

  1221. world where

  1222. temptation exists

  1223. and at the

  1224. same time, we

  1225. live with the

  1226. hope of

  1227. heaven.

  1228. But we

  1229. cannot stop

  1230. that temptation,

  1231. but we

  1232. can choose

  1233. what we do

  1234. with any

  1235. temptation.

  1236. temptation

  1237. because King

  1238. Jesus has

  1239. called us to

  1240. be holy.

  1241. It's about

  1242. being alert

  1243. to the fact

  1244. that we

  1245. all have

  1246. weak spots

  1247. and if you

  1248. don't know

  1249. your weak

  1250. spots, you

  1251. need to go

  1252. home and ask

  1253. the Lord what

  1254. your weak

  1255. spots are.

  1256. Where do you

  1257. get tempted

  1258. most?

  1259. What lies do

  1260. you believe

  1261. in your head

  1262. that make you

  1263. cause you to

  1264. live in a

  1265. different way?

  1266. Because once we

  1267. know our weak

  1268. spots, then we

  1269. can resist the

  1270. temptations when

  1271. they come.

  1272. Well, these

  1273. last verses of

  1274. our passage help

  1275. us with how

  1276. we are to

  1277. live.

  1278. You need to

  1279. believe.

  1280. You need to

  1281. know what you

  1282. believe.

  1283. Okay?

  1284. We need to

  1285. read God's

  1286. word.

  1287. We need to

  1288. pursue Jesus.

  1289. Be active in

  1290. our response to

  1291. the freedom that

  1292. Christ has won

  1293. for you and he

  1294. has won it on

  1295. your behalf.

  1296. It's about this

  1297. active pursuit,

  1298. being alive to

  1299. Christ.

  1300. If you are not

  1301. actively pursuing

  1302. Christ, then you

  1303. will be sliding

  1304. back either into

  1305. legalism or

  1306. into license or

  1307. maybe both,

  1308. depending on how

1309. you wake up on a

  1310. particular day.

  1311. Friends, we don't

  1312. grow by accident.

  1313. If we never read

  1314. our Bible, we

  1315. never pray, we

  1316. never apply what

  1317. we learn, if we

  1318. limit when we're

  1319. around Christian

  1320. community, we

  1321. will focus on what

  1322. are worldly

  1323. things and we

  1324. will not focus on

  1325. Jesus.

  1326. You won't grow

  1327. because you are not

  1328. pursuing Christ.

  1329. Christ.

  1330. You can allow sin

  1331. to reign or you

  1332. can choose to

  1333. confess and to

  1334. grow.

  1335. Trying to deal

  1336. with sin on your

  1337. own will just get

  1338. you into trouble and

  1339. you will constantly

  1340. fail.

  1341. You need to

  1342. confess to the

  1343. one who has taken

1344. it on the cross for

  1345. you.

  1346. But remembering the

  1347. gospel, preaching it

  1348. to yourself day by

  1349. day, you will

  1350. know that the

  1351. Spirit of God

  1352. will empower you

  1353. to receive the

  1354. grace of God,

  1355. to not only

  1356. confess the sin

  1357. when needed,

  1358. but will give you

  1359. a heart to

  1360. serve, a heart

  1361. to love, a

  1362. heart that will

  1363. live not wanting

  1364. there to be

  1365. anything that

  1366. stands in the

  1367. way of you

  1368. encouraging,

  1369. and loving

  1370. others as

  1371. Christ desires

  1372. for you to be

  1373. doing.

  1374. Why can we be

  1375. confident in this?

  1376. Because Jesus in

  1377. his death and

  1378. resurrection gave

  1379. up his life and

  1380. by this life gave

  1381. us a freedom to

  1382. love to the

  1383. full, to be

  1384. loved and he

  1385. gave us a

  1386. heart to serve

  1387. others beyond

  1388. anything that we

  1389. would naturally

  1390. choose by

  1391. ourselves.

  1392. The world will

  1393. have different

  1394. views on what

  1395. freedom is really

  1396. about and what

  1397. it looks like.

  1398. But friends, we

  1399. have freedom to

  1400. love.

  1401. It's a freedom

  1402. that comes with

  1403. the gospel.

  1404. Let's be the

  1405. church that

  1406. reflects the

  1407. freedom that

  1408. Christ has given

  1409. us.

  1410. Amen.
