  1. One of the most profound things that I have ever learnt as a Christian was that following Jesus is and always will be a battle, at least until Jesus comes back.

  2. It's going to be challenging.

  3. And I remember during a series that we actually did here at St. Paul's a few years ago, looking at the book of Revelation.

  4. Revelation is the final book in the Bible.

  5. It's a prophetic vision that God gives to John about the end times.

  6. And there were two really significant things that I walked away from that series with.

  7. The first one was that heaven is going to be better than I've even begun to imagine.

  8. It's going to be more exciting and more satisfying than even my wildest dreams.

  9. There'll be no sickness, no pain, no hurting, no goodbyes, no tears.

  10. It will be amazing.

  11. And I can't wait to get there.

  12. But the second thing that I learnt or that sharpened for me in that series was I realised that right up until that moment when Jesus returns and comes to fix things that are broken and right wrongs, until then, life will be broken and wrong.

  13. Until heaven, our earthly existence as people who are trying to follow Jesus, trying to live for him, will be marked by opposition.

  14. The opposition that's out there, the people who try and limit our ability to love and follow Jesus, to worship him.

  15. The opposition of a world that is marked by the consequences of sin in the form of things like sickness, natural disaster, all of which can sometimes make it more difficult to stand up and say,

  16. God is good.

  17. God loves me.

  18. God is gracious.

  19. And there's a whole other sermon series right there.

  20. But the other opposition is internal opposition.

  21. The other thing that can make following Jesus a battle is our own weakness and our own failure.

  22. It's our own doubt.

  23. It's our own anger at God for not working the way that we want him to.

  24. The point being, following Jesus is a battle.

  25. Now that's not supposed to scare you off.

  26. Heaven's worth it.

  27. What Jesus did on the cross is worth it.

  28. Jesus himself is worthy.

  29. The point's not to scare us off, but to focus us, to open our eyes.

  30. Given it's a battle, how do we battle well?

  31. How do we stand in the midst of the fighting and persevere and stand firm?

  32. How do we live now that we've been forgiven, that we are adopted, that we're in the family and that we're waiting for heaven?

  33. How do we do that well?

  34. That's the struggle for the Galatians.

  35. They've heard the gospel.

  36. They've started following Jesus.

  37. They were excited.

  38. Their lives changed drastically.

  39. But then they realized it's actually harder than we thought.

  40. It's hard to stay the course.

  41. There's people trying to convince us to do other things.

  42. There's our own questions, our own doubt.

  43. It's the question that every follower of Jesus must ask.

  44. It's the question Paul wants to wrestle with right now.

  45. How do you battle well as a follower of Jesus?

  46. How do you stand firm in the freedom that Jesus has purchased for you?

  47. Well, let's look at three things in this passage.

  48. Firstly, how do you battle well?

  49. You need to know where you are.

  50. It took me all of a month, but you're about to get your first marathon illustration.

  51. After this, you might be excited that I'm leaving.

  52. When I was running my half marathon a month ago, there was a lot of things conspiring to try and make me give up.

  53. It's fairly unpleasant, to be perfectly honest with you.

  54. The lack of conditioning in my muscles, the capacity for my blood to carry oxygen to all the parts of my body that need it, dehydration.

  55. But the biggest barrier in the half marathon was in my head.

  56. Because it's literally nearly two hours of arduous physical exertion.

  57. Just the same thing, step after step after step.

  58. 21 kilometers, and every kilometer feels like it's getting longer and further away.

  59. And I find myself having this internal discussion as I'm running.

  60. There's nothing else to do.

  61. Internal discussion about, will I keep going?

  62. Should I give up?

  63. Is this worth all the effort?

  64. And every time I pass a kilometer marker, there'd be a big number on a bit of cardboard.

  65. There's a burst of optimism.

  66. I'm suddenly thinking, I'm making progress.

  67. Off I go.

  68. A little bit quicker for 100 meters.

  69. And each one of these markers is about five minutes apart at the pace that I run.

  70. And that's five whole minutes of focusing on how uncomfortable I am and doing a million different little mathematical equations about how far there is to go, looking for an answer that might be slightly encouraging.

  71. Trying to break it down into ridiculous little segments or something like that.

  72. And in amongst this internal discussion, I catch myself hoping that every time I can't see around a corner, or every time there's a hill where I can't see the other side, I start hoping that this next corner or this next hill will have another kilometer marker.

  73. Now, the reality is, I've only been running for about 10 seconds since I passed the last one, but you start to lose track of time when you're just thinking about markers for two hours straight.

  74. And it's that hope that I'm almost there that costs you more than anything because it's false hope.

  75. I mean, it's completely unrealistic hope.

  76. It doesn't make sense at all.

  77. If I turned around, I could see the marker that I just ran past.

  78. A thousand meters is a long way, just quietly.

  79. One kilometer is an uncomfortable distance, especially when it's kilometer 15 or 16.

  80. And so it's completely ridiculous that I would think just around this corner, this would be the shortest kilometer in the history of the world.

  81. But I convince myself that it's going to be there.

  82. And so I pep up.

  83. And then as I come around the corner and it's not there, and suddenly I can see hundreds of meters down the road and there are no markers, I feel incredibly crushed.

  84. It feels like an eternity since the last marker, but there is none coming.

  85. And so I'm not as far progressed as I thought.

  86. I'm not as far progressed as I want to be, as I need to be for a little bit of affirmation and encouragement.

  87. And it's the same when it comes to following Jesus.

  88. We start following Jesus and we trick ourselves into thinking we're through the worst bit.

  89. We're through the hardest period of change.

  90. We're through the hardest bit of opposition.

  91. We're through the hardest bit of realizing that there's stuff in us that's embarrassing and shameful that we need to repent of and confess.

  92. And we trick ourselves into thinking we're nearly there.

  93. One more challenge.

  94. One more sin I've got to overcome.

  95. One more family member making fun of the fact that I follow Jesus.

  96. We think all the hard work is done and that if we just get through this one struggle, it will be easier.

  97. But when you're around the corner, there's another struggle.

  98. There's another sin that you are not on top of, that you need to confess.

  99. There's another part of your life that you probably need to repent of and acknowledge to God and start working on.

  100. And the reality is that what the Bible teaches is until we get to heaven, there will always be another struggle.

  101. There will always be parts of our lives, parts of our own desires that will be pushing us away from God.

  102. Things we have to fight.

  103. There will always be another hill, another corner, another sin, another doubt, another challenge.

  104. Following Jesus is and will be a battle.

  105. And so when Paul says in verse 16,

  106. walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  107. It sounds so simple.

  108. Just walk by the Spirit.

  109. And then you won't do all these things that you're embarrassed about or that you're ashamed of or that you've been doing your whole life.

  110. The instruction sounds easy, but then he follows it with verse 17.

  111. He says,

  112. The flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit.

  113. And the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.

  114. And here's the key bit.

  115. They are in conflict with each other.

  116. So you're not to do whatever you want.

  117. It's important if we're in a battle, and we are, to know that we're in a battle.

  118. It's important to have our eyes open to that reality.

  119. Conflict is where we live as followers of Jesus.

  120. This new life, this freedom that God has won for us,

  121. this desire and opportunity to please and to serve God,

  122. is fighting with everything that we used to be.

  123. It's fighting with a lifestyle, a learned lifestyle,

  124. that puts us at the centre,

  125. that loves ourselves and our own comfort more than it loves Jesus.

  126. Deb mentioned this last week.

  127. She took us to Romans 7,

  128. where Paul talks about the torture of deep down wanting to serve God

  129. with every minute of every day,

  130. but knowing that so much of the time you compromise.

  131. You say,

  132. I'm going to serve God with everything,

  133. but first there's a few things that I need to do to look after me.

  134. Conflict is the reality for the Christian.

  135. So we need to expect it.

  136. In fact, if there's a lack of moral conflict and inner wrestling

  137. in your life following Jesus,

  138. that's probably not evidence that you've made it.

  139. It could be a sign that you've conceded defeat.

  140. Your default setting will be to go back to your old way of life,

  141. and conflict is the reality of the one

  142. who is progressively becoming more like Jesus.

  143. The only time that that old desire,

  144. that old way of life will be fully destroyed

  145. is when we get to heaven.

  146. Conflict is the reality for those who follow Jesus.

  147. Internal conflict.

  148. But this next verse is really, really important.

  149. Verse 18.

  150. If you're led by the Spirit,

  151. you are not under the law.

  152. Let me say this really clearly.

  153. Where you are as a Christian in this battle,

  154. there is conflict,

  155. but there is no condemnation.

  156. There is conflict,

  157. but there is no condemnation.

  158. You will struggle,

  159. you will wrestle,

  160. you will fall sometimes,

  161. but there is no condemnation.

  162. This is more a paintball skirmish

  163. than an actual war.

  164. If you've never done paintball,

  165. it hurts,

  166. it's uncomfortable,

  167. it'll leave a mark,

  168. it'll do some damage,

  169. but it won't kill you.

  170. If you succumb to temptation,

  171. it'll be painful.

  172. There'll be consequences.

  173. You might damage relationships,

  174. but it can't undo what God has already done for you.

  175. It can't uncrucify Jesus.

  176. It can't put him back in the tomb.

  177. So as a Christian,

  178. you battle with life insurance.

  179. You battle with a guardian angel.

  180. You battle with a medic team.

  181. You battle in such a way that you are safe.

  182. We battle as those who have been adopted.

  183. And so we struggle and grow slowly,

  184. but surely completely secure

  185. that we are and will always be loved

  186. by our heavenly father.

  187. In our great moments of victory

  188. over sin and temptation,

  189. and in our moments of despair and failure,

  190. still secure in the love of our heavenly father,

  191. battling well means knowing where you are.

  192. You are in conflict,

  193. but there is no condemnation,

  194. which means when you fail,

  195. you're secure.

  196. It means when you realize

  197. that you haven't grown as much as you wanted to,

  198. when you catch yourself falling back

  199. into an old habit,

  200. you have the security to confess that,

  201. to admit it,

  202. and to get up and try again.

  203. You have the freedom

  204. to hand over guilt

  205. and to take the next step,

  206. to face the next challenge,

  207. to have the perseverance

  208. to keep going around the next corner.

  209. Knowing where you are

  210. spares you the disappointment

  211. of thinking life was supposed to be easy

  212. and then being shocked

  213. when actually you need to fight.

  214. You need to battle.

  215. You need to persevere

  216. if you want to become more like Jesus.

  217. If you want to live in the freedom

  218. that God has got for you,

  219. know up front,

  220. it will be hard.

  221. It will be difficult,

  222. but you can do it secure

  223. in the love that God has for you

  224. and with your eyes focused

  225. on the destination

  226. that you're hoping for.

  227. Battling well means

  228. knowing where you are.

  229. Second thing,

  230. it means focusing

  231. on the real issue.

  232. Have a look at verse 19.

  233. The acts of the flesh

  234. are obvious.

  235. Sexual immorality,

  236. impurity and debauchery,

  237. idolatry and witchcraft,

  238. hatred,

  239. discord,

  240. jealousy,

  241. fits of rage,

  242. selfish ambition,

  243. dissensions,

  244. factions and envy,

  245. drunkenness,

  246. orgies and the like.

  247. I warn you,

  248. as I did before,

  249. that those who live like this

  250. will not inherit

  251. the kingdom of God.

  252. So Paul's digging into

  253. this conflict for us

  254. a little bit,

  255. giving us a deeper view

  256. and we experience

  257. this conflict

  258. in the two halves.

  259. So the first half

  260. is what he calls

  261. the acts of the flesh

  262. and when Paul uses

  263. that word flesh,

  264. he's kind of meaning

  265. our basic carnal desires,

  266. our default human setting,

  267. the thing that everyone

  268. in the world goes after

  269. until they meet Jesus

  270. and discover that he's better.

  271. It's our internal

  272. default instincts,

  273. it's the way we operate

  274. before we meet Jesus.

  275. But there's two really

  276. interesting things

  277. in these verses.

  278. First, have a look

  279. at what's listed

  280. in these verses.

  281. You've got some obvious ones,

  282. some ones that we all assume

  283. God's not going to be happy about,

  284. idolatry,

  285. witchcraft,

  286. sexual immorality.

  287. But there's also

  288. a couple of more subtle ones,

  289. maybe even things

  290. that we would see

  291. as kind of acceptable

  292. in small doses.

  293. Envy,

  294. jealousy,

  295. the odd bit of drunkenness.

  296. selfish ambition

  297. is even sometimes

  298. considered a virtue

  299. in our culture.

  300. Look after yourself,

  301. get what you deserve.

  302. But look where the focus

  303. is in this list.

  304. See, the emphasis

  305. isn't on those specific acts,

  306. it's just a list of examples.

  307. The focus is on the source

  308. of those acts.

  309. acts.

  310. They come from the flesh.

  311. They're evidence

  312. of a life

  313. that is driven

  314. by rejecting God.

  315. They're evidence

  316. that the center

  317. that makes the decision,

  318. the center

  319. that desires things

  320. and then pursues things,

  321. is not in line

  322. with God,

  323. is not submitted

  324. to Him

  325. as King.

  326. The real issue

  327. is not the acts.

  328. He does the same thing

  329. when he moves on

  330. to the positive half

  331. in verse 22.

  332. He says,

  333. but the fruit

  334. of the Spirit

  335. is love,

  336. joy,

  337. peace,

  338. forbearance,

  339. kindness,

  340. goodness,

  341. faithfulness,

  342. gentleness,

  343. and self-control.

  344. Against such things

  345. there is no law.

  346. So you've got

  347. the acts

  348. of the flesh

  349. and then you've got

  350. the fruit

  351. of the Spirit.

  352. That is acts

  353. and fruit

  354. that are produced by.

  355. They're the result

  356. of something

  357. that's going on

  358. deeper inside.

  359. See,

  360. the conflict

  361. that we experience

  362. as Christians,

  363. the battle

  364. that we need

  365. to fight in,

  366. that we need

  367. to commit to,

  368. that we need

  369. to struggle in,

  370. the disagreement

  371. that we feel,

  372. the tension

  373. between our old way

  374. of life

  375. and the new life

  376. that we have

  377. in Jesus

  378. is not a battle

  379. that is waged

  380. in our hands

  381. and feet.

  382. It's not a battle

  383. that is waged

  384. in your eyes

  385. or your mouth.

  386. life,

  387. it's deeper.

  388. It's a battle

  389. for your heart.

  390. It's a battle

  391. for the very core

  392. of you.

  393. And so if we spend

  394. our energy

  395. in this battle

  396. focusing on our

  397. hands and feet,

  398. focusing on the acts,

  399. focusing on the fruit,

  400. we're missing

  401. the real issue.

  402. See,

  403. the jealousy

  404. that I feel

  405. or the jealousy

  406. that I act on,

  407. the kindness

  408. that I don't feel

  409. or the kindness

  410. that I don't act on,

  411. they're both

  412. the result

  413. of what's going

  414. on in my heart.

  415. Which means

  416. I can't fix them

  417. by just trying harder

  418. or changing

  419. my behaviour.

  420. It might kind of

  421. put on a show

  422. for a little while.

  423. I might be able

  424. to feel really jealous

  425. and pretend

  426. that I'm not.

  427. I might be able

  428. to fake kindness.

  429. But if

  430. drunkenness

  431. is my issue,

  432. I might somehow

  433. force myself

  434. to stop drinking

  435. and that's a good thing

  436. but I actually

  437. haven't dealt

  438. with the issue.

  439. There's a reason

  440. that I'm doing that.

  441. I have to dig deeper.

  442. That's why in verse 24

  443. he says,

  444. those who belong

  445. to Christ Jesus

  446. have crucified

  447. the flesh

  448. with its passions

  449. and desires.

  450. What's called for here

  451. is not a slight

  452. change in behaviour

  453. but it's a killing

  454. of sin,

  455. a destroying

  456. of desires

  457. that drag us

  458. away from this

  459. new life

  460. that Jesus

  461. has purchased

  462. for us.

  463. We need to put

  464. that sin to death

  465. and in order

  466. to do that

  467. we've got to ask

  468. the question,

  469. why

  470. do I get drunk?

  471. Why

  472. am I jealous?

  473. Why

  474. am I immoral?

  475. Why

  476. do I look at things

  477. that I know

  478. that I shouldn't?

  479. What is it

  480. that I desire

  481. that I think

  482. getting drunk

  483. or being angry

  484. or jealous

  485. or whatever it is

  486. will deliver for me?

  487. That's the

  488. heart question.

  489. Only

  490. if we begin

  491. to engage

  492. that question

  493. can we begin

  494. to deal

  495. with the actual

  496. enemy.

  497. Heart change

  498. is what is needed

  499. and heart change

  500. is something

  501. that can only happen

  502. by the grace

  503. of God

  504. and in the power

  505. of the Holy Spirit.

  506. Here's what the

  507. process looks like.

  508. As you ask

  509. that deeper

  510. question

  511. and maybe

  512. there's something

  513. in your life

  514. right now

  515. that you can

  516. insert in this

  517. process.

  518. As you dig

  519. behind the

  520. acts of the

  521. flesh

  522. or the absence

  523. of the fruit

  524. of the Spirit

  525. and you discover

  526. what it is

  527. that you want

  528. that you're

  529. hoping those

  530. things will

  531. deliver,

  532. the Spirit

  533. whose main

  534. role

  535. is to help

  536. you and me

  537. and all of us

  538. know and see

  539. Jesus in his

  540. all satisfying

  541. joy-giving

  542. majesty,

  543. the Spirit

  544. shows you

  545. how Jesus

  546. meets that

  547. desire more

  548. completely

  549. and more fully

  550. than whatever

  551. it is you're

  552. doing instead.

  553. But you need

  554. to know

  555. what that

  556. desire is

  557. before you

  558. can go

  559. through that

  560. process.

  561. Otherwise

  562. all you'll

  563. ever focus

  564. on is

  565. am I being

  566. envious,

  567. am I being

  568. jealous,

  569. am I being

  570. kind,

  571. am I being

  572. good and

  573. you can

  574. try to

  575. do those

  576. things but

  577. deep down

  578. you'll still

  579. be jealous

  580. and you

  581. still won't

  582. be kind

  583. and eventually

  584. you'll get

  585. weary and

  586. you'll go to

  587. your default.

  588. If you

  589. never dig

  590. down to

  591. see the

  592. why behind

  593. your sin,

  594. if you

  595. never look

  596. into where

  597. the battle

  598. is really

  599. raging,

  600. then the

  601. hatred you

  602. feel for

  603. some annoying

  604. person will

  605. be really

  606. difficult to

  607. see how

  608. Jesus has

  609. anything to

  610. do with

  611. it.

  612. You need

  613. to ask

  614. why.

  615. Because in

  616. the gospel,

  617. in Jesus,

  618. we have

  619. everything we

  620. need.

  621. Our problem

  622. is we

  623. haven't worked

  624. out what

  625. it is we're

  626. chasing and

  627. so we

  628. can't see

  629. how Jesus

  630. provides and

  631. satisfies.

  632. Conflict in

  633. the Christian

  634. life, the

  635. battle to

  636. live as

  637. people worthy

  638. of the name

  639. Jesus is

  640. not a battle

  641. that's fought

  642. in our hands

  643. and feet.

  644. It's a battle

  645. that goes on

  646. in our hearts.

  647. And because

  648. you lack

  649. the power

  650. to change

  651. your own

  652. heart,

  653. focusing here

  654. means that we

  655. can battle

  656. well by being

  657. humble and

  658. dependent on

  659. God for that

  660. transformation.

  661. It means

  662. rather than

  663. keeping our

  664. weaknesses and

  665. our failures and

  666. our sins secret

  667. and trying to

  668. fix them before

  669. we let anyone

  670. else know that

  671. they're an

  672. issue,

  673. instead of doing

  674. that which won't

  675. work, we can go

  676. to God first and

  677. regularly and say,

  678. God, I failed,

  679. I need your

  680. forgiveness, I need

  681. your help, and I

  682. need you to change

  683. my heart.

  684. I need your

  685. spirit to help

  686. me see that

  687. Jesus is better.

  688. I need your

  689. spirit to grow

  690. in me a love

  691. for Jesus that

  692. drives my

  693. actions, that

  694. produces fruit.

  695. I need your

  696. help to be

  697. loving, kind,

  698. good, patient,

  699. joyful, peaceful,

  700. faithful, gentle,

  701. self-controlled.

  702. They're called

  703. fruit of the

  704. spirit because

  705. they grow

  706. slowly but

  707. surely in the

  708. life of a

  709. Christian who

  710. is being led

  711. by the spirit

  712. that's in them.

  713. Battling well

  714. means knowing

  715. to expect

  716. conflict but

  717. not condemnation.

  718. It means

  719. focusing on

  720. your heart,

  721. which means

  722. depending on

  723. God to do

  724. the work of

  725. transformation.

  726. And the last

  727. thing, battling

  728. well as a

  729. Christian,

  730. means getting

  731. ahead of the

  732. game.

  733. Or to use

  734. Paul's language,

  735. it means

  736. keeping in

  737. step with the

  738. spirit.

  739. Verse 25.

  740. Since we

  741. live by the

  742. spirit, that

  743. is since we've

  744. been given

  745. life by the

  746. spirit, that's

  747. what Galatians

  748. has taught us,

  749. let us keep

  750. in step with

  751. the spirit.

  752. Now it took

  753. me a month to

  754. give you the

  755. first one, you're

  756. going to get

  757. two in one

  758. day, two

  759. running

  760. illustrations.

  761. The other

  762. running that I

  763. do, apart from

  764. trying to do a

  765. half marathon, is

  766. a weekly park run

  767. with a bunch of

  768. people in this

  769. room.

  770. There's a bit of

  771. healthy competition

  772. amongst us about

  773. who can be the

  774. fastest.

  775. It's supposed to

  776. be a race against

  777. yourself, but

  778. nobody actually

  779. believes that.

  780. And you get a

  781. time every week as

  782. to how fast you

  783. can run the five

  784. kilometres.

  785. If you don't

  786. believe me about

  787. the competition,

  788. note how many

  789. people are talking

  790. about their times

  791. at morning tea.

  792. Anyway, it's a

  793. five kilometre time

  794. trial.

  795. And in my

  796. marathon training, a

  797. good win about

  798. investing all those

  799. hours was that my

  800. times got better and

  801. better and better and

  802. I had something to

  803. brag about and gloat

  804. about.

  805. And then I set

  806. myself a bit of a

  807. target about what

  808. time I would get to.

  809. I wanted to get

  810. faster than 22

  811. minutes.

  812. And I got kind of

  813. close and I was

  814. pretty happy with

  815. that.

  816. And then after my

  817. marathon I thought

  818. that's where I'm

  819. going to focus my

  820. energy.

  821. And I had a couple

  822. of weeks break

  823. because my body was

  824. kind of exhausted.

  825. But the first time I

  826. went back I ran like

  827. quite a bit slower

  828. than I'd been running

  829. beforehand.

  830. I was very frustrated

  831. and so I went home a

  832. little bit disappointed

  833. and agitated and I

  834. thought I'll go back

  835. next week and I'll get

  836. that goal.

  837. Because once I've got

  838. that goal I can relax.

  839. Job done.

  840. The next week still

  841. nowhere near my 22

  842. minute goal.

  843. Very disappointed and

  844. frustrated.

  845. And as I'm running

  846. around the five

  847. kilometres trying to

  848. beat this time I'm

  849. getting angry at

  850. myself.

  851. Like what are you

  852. doing?

  853. Just put some extra

  854. effort in.

  855. Run faster.

  856. But there's some

  857. physiological issues

  858. like having to throw

  859. up next to the track

  860. that were limiting me

  861. getting to my time.

  862. And that's because the

  863. reality is what I do

  864. in that moment actually

  865. counts very little in

  866. the scheme of things as

  867. to whether or not I can

  868. actually produce the

  869. result that I want.

  870. The factors that

  871. influence whether or not

  872. I can get that goal

  873. and get victory if you

  874. like in that moment is

  875. the work that's done

  876. beforehand.

  877. It's the whether or not

  878. I ate KFC the night

  879. before I did.

  880. It's whether or not I

  881. ran during the week or

  882. two weeks or actually

  883. three weeks beforehand

  884. I didn't.

  885. The preparation is where

  886. the victory is won.

  887. In the battle you might

  888. have all the willpower in

  889. the world but if you have

  890. not prepared yourself and

  891. strengthened yourself you

  892. will lose.

  893. You will be defeated.

  894. We have life in the

  895. spirit so the call is to

  896. keep in step with the

  897. spirit.

  898. To constantly be led by

  899. the spirit.

  900. To have the spirit

  901. shaping us and equipping

  902. us so that when the

  903. temptation comes we know

  904. that Jesus is better.

  905. When the failure comes we

  906. know that God is gracious

  907. and will still forgive us.

  908. So what does it look like

  909. to keep in step with the

  910. spirit?

  911. How do we do that

  912. concretely?

  913. How do we prepare for the

  914. battle?

  915. Two things.

  916. Sharing and sowing.

  917. Sharing and sowing.

  918. Firstly sharing.

  919. Spirit led life is

  920. community life.

  921. Have a look at verse 26.

  922. Let us not become

  923. conceited, provoking and

  924. envying each other.

  925. Brothers and sisters if

  926. someone is caught in a

  927. sin you who live by the

  928. spirit should restore that

  929. person gently.

  930. But watch yourselves or

  931. you also may be tempted.

  932. Carry each other's

  933. burdens and in this way

  934. you fulfill the law of

  935. Christ.

  936. If anyone thinks they are

  937. something when they are

  938. not they deceive

  939. themselves.

  940. Each one should test their

  941. own actions then they can

  942. take pride in themselves

  943. alone without comparing

  944. themselves to someone

  945. else for each one should

  946. carry their own load.

  947. Spirit life, living by the

  948. spirit, being led by the

  949. spirit, keeping in step

  950. with the spirit has to do

  951. with how we live together.

  952. The first thing that Paul

  953. goes to after saying keep

  954. in step with the spirit is

  955. how we perceive ourselves

  956. and how that impacts the

  957. way we relate to and love

  958. one another.

  959. Don't provoke each other out

  960. of some sense of

  961. superiority.

  962. Don't envy each other out

  963. of feelings of inferiority

  964. because both attitudes

  965. reflect conceit or

  966. self-absorption or focus

  967. on me.

  968. This echoes back to

  969. chapter 5 when Paul talks

  970. about being free and what

  971. it looks like to live free

  972. is to lovingly serve our

  973. neighbours.

  974. The spirit that God has

  975. given us didn't draw us

  976. into this little quiet

  977. private one-on-one

  978. relationship with God.

  979. It drew us into a

  980. community that would be

  981. the people of God.

  982. Plural.

  983. The point being that

  984. keeping in step with the

  985. spirit requires you

  986. to be engaged with the

  987. people of the spirit.

  988. Engaged with Christian

  989. community.

  990. Preparation for the battle

  991. in your heart, the battle

  992. to resist temptation,

  993. the battle to deal with

  994. your failures is best

  995. done in partnership with

  996. your brothers and

  997. sisters in Christ.

  998. Carrying each other's

  999. burdens.

  1000. Gently correcting one

  1001. another.

  1002. Not comparing ourselves

  1003. but pointing each other

1004. to the freedom of the

  1005. gospel, to the obedience

  1006. that the gospel enables.

  1007. And here's a little

  1008. challenge for us in

  1009. this.

  1010. I think it's much

  1011. easier for us to

  1012. carry someone else's

  1013. burden with them than

1014. it is for us to ask for

1015. or accept help for our

  1016. own burdens.

  1017. We're happy to offer

  1018. help but accepting

1019. help is a little more

  1020. difficult.

  1021. It's much easier to

  1022. recognise sin in someone

1023. else and to gently seek

1024. to restore them than it

  1025. is to have somebody

  1026. recognise sin in you

  1027. and gently seek to

  1028. restore you.

1029. We live in a culture

  1030. that prides itself on

  1031. independence.

1032. But we serve a God who

  1033. delights in and designed

  1034. us for interdependence.

1035. The challenge for us as a

  1036. community and as

  1037. individuals, will you ask

  1038. for help?

  1039. Will you share your

  1040. burden?

  1041. Will you hear

  1042. correction?

  1043. I remember when we

1044. were having kids in that

  1045. crazy bit when they're

1046. first born and you just

1047. don't know which way is

1048. up and you can't sleep.

  1049. And lots of people

  1050. graciously and generally

  1051. offered meals, offered to

  1052. babysit Bailey when

1053. Hudson was born, offered to

1054. do whatever we needed for

  1055. help.

  1056. And we'd have

  1057. conversations about that

  1058. and we're like, oh, that's

  1059. really nice.

  1060. And some people really

  1061. graciously forced their

  1062. help on us.

1063. And I mean that when I say

  1064. it.

1065. They forced their help on us

1066. and we had to receive it.

  1067. But I remember having

  1068. conversation.

  1069. We'd be sitting there

  1070. going, surely somebody else

1071. needs help more than us.

  1072. We're surviving.

  1073. And we were.

1074. We were tired, but we were

  1075. surviving.

1076. But what if that's not the

  1077. goal?

1078. What if God's goal for you is

1079. not that you survive in your

  1080. own strength?

1081. What if in that moment

1082. what we were doing was

  1083. actually robbing ourselves

  1084. of the blessing of

  1085. journeying together and

  1086. robbing our church family

1087. of the blessing of doing

1088. what we're instructed to do

1089. when it comes to living in

  1090. line with the Spirit?

1091. Keeping in step with the

1092. Spirit requires us to be in

  1093. Christian community.

  1094. And that doesn't mean

  1095. attending church once a

  1096. week.

  1097. Being in Christian

  1098. community means having

  1099. substantial, honest

  1100. relationships with other

  1101. Christians.

1102. Having people that you feel

1103. secure enough to ask help

  1104. from.

1105. People who you trust enough

  1106. to confess sin with.

1107. Maybe the people in your

  1108. community group.

1109. Maybe others that you have

  1110. long-standing relationships

  1111. with.

1112. But either way, ensuring that

1113. you are there to share the

1114. burden when they need it.

1115. And they are there to share

1116. your burden when you need it.

1117. We are in a battle.

1118. And the Spirit's power to

1119. win that battle is built

1120. into the kind of Christian

  1121. relationships that are

  1122. described in these verses.

  1123. Where we journey together.

1124. So keeping in step with the

1125. Spirit, staying ahead of the

1126. game means sharing your life

  1127. with your brothers and

1128. sisters in Christ so that

  1129. you don't battle alone.

1130. And the second bit it means

1131. keeping in step with the

  1132. Spirit is about sowing.

1133. Have a look quickly with me

  1134. at verse 7.

  1135. Do not be deceived.

  1136. God cannot be mocked.

1137. A man reaps what he sows.

1138. Catch the seriousness of that

  1139. soundbite there.

1140. Be easy to just skip past it

1141. and focus on the reaping and

  1142. sowing.

  1143. God cannot be mocked.

  1144. It's a timeless principle.

1145. You get out what you put in.

1146. You sow apple seeds, you get

  1147. an apple tree.

1148. You sow rocks, you get

  1149. nothing.

1150. As followers of Jesus, it is

1151. mocking God to sow that which

1152. is not honoring to him into your

1153. life and then to act surprised

1154. or disappointed when you don't

1155. see the fruit of the Spirit being

  1156. produced.

  1157. Verse 8,

1158. Whoever sows to please their

1159. flesh from the flesh will reap

  1160. destruction.

1161. Whoever sows to please the

1162. Spirit from the Spirit will reap

  1163. eternal life.

1164. The things you fill your life

1165. with, the things you watch, the

1166. people you spend time with, those

1167. are the things that you are

  1168. sowing into your character.

1169. Those are the things that will

1170. produce either the acts of the

1171. flesh or the fruit of the Spirit.

1172. If you spend all your time with

1173. people who encourage you to be

  1174. dishonest or arrogant or

  1175. competitive or to compare

1176. yourself, if you watch things on

1177. TV or movies that fill your mind

1178. with violence or hatred or

1179. immorality, what do you think you

  1180. will reap?

1181. Now the point isn't that we should

1182. all go live in the desert and hide

1183. away from the big bad world out

  1184. there.

1185. Remember the battle's in here so

1186. we're taking the battle with us

  1187. even into the desert.

1188. Plus God sent us into the world

1189. to call people out of darkness

1190. into light with the hope of the

  1191. gospel.

1192. The point is you reap what you sow.

1193. And so if your heart's desire is to

1194. truly live a life that honors God, a

1195. life that shines so brightly that

1196. others are drawn into the hope and

1197. joy of the gospel, then you need to be

1198. sowing to please the Spirit.

  1199. Spirit.

1200. And the Spirit's desire is to make

  1201. much of Jesus.

1202. So if you want to please Him, fill

  1203. your life with Jesus.

1204. Fill your mind and your heart with

  1205. Jesus.

  1206. Soak in His Word.

  1207. Pray.

1208. Spend time just hanging out with Him.

1209. Avoid the things that you know will

1210. lead you away from Him.

1211. Walk out of the movie that you've paid

1212. good money to watch if you can see

1213. that that movie is sowing into you

1214. things that are going to lead you away

  1215. from Jesus.

1216. Stop doing that hobby if it's become

1217. something that is sowing selfish

1218. ambition or jealousy in you.

1219. Gather with and invest in Spirit-filled,

  1220. interdependent relationships with

1221. brothers and sisters in Christ.

1222. Serve and allow yourself to be served.

1223. Confess your sins and entrust yourself

1224. to Jesus who died and rose again so

1225. that you could be forgiven even as you

1226. battle, even in your moments of doubt

  1227. and failure.

1228. Walk with Jesus who has already won the

  1229. war.

1230. We are in a battle.

1231. So we need to know that there will be

  1232. conflict.

1233. And yet we are secure.

1234. There will not be condemnation for those

1235. who are in Christ Jesus.

1236. We are in a battle.

1237. And that battle is not fought in our

1238. hands and feet but deep within us, in our

  1239. hearts.

1240. So we need to pray.

1241. We need to depend on God and on the

1242. power of His Spirit within us to shape

1243. and mould us to win the battles,

  1244. to stand firm.

1245. We are in a battle.

1246. So we need to get ahead of the game.

1247. We need to listen to the Spirit.

1248. We need to share our lives with one

  1249. another, journey together, share

1250. burdens and we need to sow for a future

  1251. harvest.

1252. We need to take the things in that will

1253. produce the fruit that we desire most.

1254. Since we live by the Spirit, since we have

1255. been given life by the Spirit, we have

1256. been brought to life through the death and

1257. resurrection of Jesus which gifted us the

  1258. Holy Spirit.

1259. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep

  1260. in step with it.
