  1. Good evening, everyone. It's great to be in church with you tonight. If you haven't met

  2. before, my name's Steve, a senior pastor here. And one of the highlights for me in our church

  3. year is Vision Sunday. And the whole Vision series, in fact, this is my ninth one I've

  4. led us through as a church. And for me, it just gets better and better. So we're almost

  5. at the end of this one, but this is a crucial one for us tonight on our Vision Sunday. And

  6. I want to begin our time together reflecting on the life of one of the greatest philosophical

  7. thinkers, one of the sharpest political minds, most gifted artists, and I suspect most quoted

  8. individuals of the past 100 years. Arnold Schwarzenegger was born the son of a low-ranking Austrian

  9. police officer and was destined for a life of just total obscurity until his hands wrapped

  10. around a barbell for the very first time at the age of 14. By 18, he was living in London

  11. and traveling the world competing in bodybuilding championships. And at one point, his coach,

  12. a guy named Wag Bennett, asked him, Arnie, what is it that you want to do with your life?

  13. And Wag said that the response of this 18-year-old was remarkable. He said,

  14. I want to be the richest and the greatest bodybuilder of all time. I want to live in the United States.

  15. I want to be an actor, a movie director, own an apartment block, and dabble in politics.

  16. As an 18-year-old, he saw the future, what he wanted, he just went for it. And Wag, as well

  17. as those who trained with Arnie and competed with Arnie, said that they had never met anyone

  18. who was so focused on what they want to achieve in the future. His training partner said that if

  19. you ever beat him at anything, he would look at you and say, you will never, ever do that again.

  20. And he said, doesn't matter how hard you're trying to man, what sort of training you put in,

  21. you could never beat Arnie at it again. He was so, so focused.

  22. And Jesus, in that passage that was just read out to us, tells a story, a similar story about a man

  23. who saw the future, saw what he needed to do. He just went for it. Just went for it.

  24. Have a look at it. You've got your service sheets there in front of you. Luke 16, verses 1 to 15.

    Luke 16:1–15

  25. Look at verse 1. Jesus told his disciples there was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting

  26. his possessions. And so he called him in and asked him, what is this that I hear about you?

  27. Give an account of your management because you cannot be manager any longer. And the manager said

  28. to himself, well, what am I going to do now? My master has taken away my job. I'm not strong

  29. enough to dig and I'm ashamed to beg. I know what I'll do so that when I lose my job here,

  30. people will welcome me into their houses. Now in Jesus' time, this manager person here was like a

  31. chief operating officer and a chief financial officer rolled into the one. That is, they ran

  32. the entire estate of the wealthy owner. And what they also did was that they would get the owner's

  33. money and invest the owner's money as well. So they had a very, very high responsibility.

  34. And this manager, as it says, has been a bit dishonest and he hasn't been doing such a great

  35. job. And so he gets a termination notice. You're fired is his notice. And he knows now that he's in

  36. trouble. You see, when word gets around, he's not likely to get another manager's job. He's not likely

  37. to be in this kind of position again. And he's been sitting in an office for too long. His hands are

  38. beautiful. And he's thinking, I can't dig trenches for a living. I haven't got a strong enough back

  39. for that sort of stuff. And I'm not going to lie on myself. I can't go from this role down to begging.

  40. And what's more, there's no social services. There's no Centrelink to fall back on. And so for this man,

  41. this is a life and death decision. How's he going to live? How am I going to feed myself? Where's my food

  42. coming from? I'm going to get my housing. And so what he does is he makes a decision now that will

  43. pay benefits for the future. And that is the point of this whole parable. That's what it's all about.

  44. And what he does next though, is the bit of the parable that can be a little distracting.

  45. Verse five.

  46. Notice what the outcome is from his decision.

  47. It creates friendships that didn't exist before.

  48. In acting for the future, he won the favor and obligation of his master's debtors.

  49. And the really strange thing here is the master's response in verse eight says,

  50. the master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly.

  51. It's an incredible response.

  52. Why would the owner commend the manager for his action here?

  53. I mean, it appears that he's ripped him off.

  54. But one of the best theories is that the manager here was doing what the tax collectors used to do

  55. in first century Palestine. And they would get the cut that the Romans required, and then they would add

  56. their percentage on top. And it's most likely that that's what this manager is doing here is part of

  57. his investment portfolio. He's investing his bosses.

  58. He's the owner of the estate's investments.

  59. And he's adding his percentage on top of it as well.

  60. He's getting his interest out of the investment.

  61. And so what he's doing here would appear that he's taking his investments off.

  62. He's removing his fees.

  63. And it makes his master's debtors happy.

  64. They're paying a much smaller bill.

  65. But he's also giving his master a great name in town at exactly the same time.

  66. So it's like he's getting nothing out of this deal now.

  67. Now, whether that's exactly how it worked is really, it doesn't matter.

  68. It's not the point of the parable.

  69. But Jesus' point here is that this man is using his opportunity, his wealth, with an eye on the future.

  70. And the master commends him because he acted shrewdly.

  71. You made a great decision there.

  72. A wise decision, a smart judgment.

  73. You're astute.

  74. But see the rebuke of the second half of verse 8.

  75. This shrewd, wise, astute action is one that Christians fail in.

  76. It says,

  77. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are people of the light.

  78. Jesus is saying that this manager's actions, he's wiser.

  79. He's wiser in the youths of his wealth than his disciples are in theirs.

  80. So what we're going to do is we're going to take a moment here to learn a couple of lessons from this parable

  81. about what it might look like to be wise.

  82. The first thing we learn here is that Jesus likens us, his disciples,

  83. to a manager of someone else's estate.

  84. Someone else's money.

  85. The word manager here can also be easily translated as steward.

  86. So this man is a steward.

  87. He's a manager of someone else's money.

  88. He's a fund manager.

  89. When you manage someone else's money,

  90. you can't do whatever you want with that money because it isn't your money.

  91. You have to do it according to the terms of the person who owns the money.

  92. And so first up, Jesus is reminding his disciples that if you understand anything,

  93. if you understand that there is a God, then you'll know that whatever you have is in fact not yours.

  94. We are stewards of God's money, of his resources.

  95. And so the first thing is we've got to stop acting as if it's ours.

  96. That's pretty hard hitting.

  97. Because particularly in the Western world,

  98. we have a strong attachment to wealth and possessions

  99. because we've worked for it.

  100. We love the idea of the so-called self-made man.

  101. It's my money.

  102. I've worked hard for this.

  103. I've sacrificed for this.

  104. And Jesus says, no, it's not.

  105. It's not your money.

  106. If you're a Christian, there is a much bigger, broader theological context

  107. that you put this truth into.

  108. As Christians, we believe that God made everything,

  109. that he sustains everything.

  110. We have life and we have skills and we have opportunities

  111. that he has gifted each one of us with.

  112. They are gifts from him to us.

  113. And without those things, we would not make any money at all.

  114. Without the life that he gives us every day,

  115. and the Bible says he puts the breath in our lungs moment by moment,

  116. with that breath that he gives us,

  117. he gives us the ability to make money.

  118. And if he chooses not to give that to us,

  119. we have no ability to make money.

  120. Without life, it's extremely difficult to do anything.

  121. If you're healthy and you're able to work, that's a gift.

  122. The fact that you were born in this time and this place

  123. with its many opportunities, that's a gift.

  124. If you were born in the 12th century on a mountaintop in Tibet,

  125. you would think very differently about the resources that you have.

  126. And so we work hard for what we have with the life,

  127. the circumstances, the talents that God has given us.

  128. We are stewards of every gift from him.

  129. Listen to the prayer of the fabulously wealthy and powerful King David

  130. from 1 Chronicles 29.

  131. Everything in heaven and earth is yours.

  132. Wealth and honor come from you.

  133. You are the ruler of all things.

  134. Who am I and who are my people that we should be able to give

  135. as generously as this?

  136. Everything comes from you,

  137. and we have given you only what comes from your hand.

  138. All this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple

  139. for your holy name comes from your hand,

  140. and all of it belongs to you.

  141. So if we're stewards, it's not ours,

  142. and God calls us to be radically generous.

  143. And if we're not radically generous with the gifts that he's given us,

  144. that includes time, emotions, and everything else,

  145. then it's not called stinginess.

  146. It's called robbery.

  147. It's not a lack of compassion for the poor and the needy,

  148. and it's actually a lack of integrity in our hearts.

  149. Malachi 3.8 is pretty clear in this.

  150. It says,

  151. That is, the people in the Old Testament were told

  152. that 10% of their income needed to be given away as the starting point.

  153. That was the starting point.

  154. And I'm not convinced that the standards of the people in the New Testament

  155. are any lower,

  156. especially when we have a greater hope,

  157. a greater revelation, a greater grace, and greater benefits.

  158. However, if we do think that 10% as a starting point is a lot of money,

  159. then maybe we're thinking about it totally the wrong way.

  160. We've got this whole thing upside down.

  161. Don't forget we're stewards of someone else's money.

  162. So imagine someone comes to you.

  163. They're a billionaire.

  164. They come to you,

  165. and they say to you,

  166. Please manage my wealth for me,

  167. and here's the terms.

  168. The terms are this.

  169. Every year,

  170. you get to keep 90% of the returns from the investment,

  171. and you've got to give me 10% of the returns from the investment.

  172. Would you want that job?

  173. Come on.

  174. Would you want that job?

  175. Who wouldn't want that job?

  176. Every fund manager would kill someone else to get that job.

  177. In all seriousness.

  178. And that is exactly how generous God is.

  179. That is what God is offering us.

  180. But if we love money more than we love God,

  181. then those terms,

  182. even those terms,

  183. will not be good enough for us.

  184. We won't be generous.

  185. We won't give.

  186. And it's not called stinginess.

  187. It's called robbery.

  188. We are stewards of money that is not ours.

  189. That's the first thing we learn from this parable.

  190. But there is something even more incredible that is being taught here.

  191. Verse 9 is the goal that Jesus has in mind with our stewardship of his resources.

  192. And the goal is our happiness,

  193. our love,

  194. our security forever.

  195. I tell you,

  196. use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourself

  197. so that when it is gone,

  198. you'll be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

  199. So what this manager does here

  200. is he puts aside some short-term financial gain

  201. for the sake of gaining something

  202. that is long-term and infinitely more valuable.

  203. And that's what a wise investment is.

  204. A wise investment is where you put your money

  205. into something that is going to increase in value over time.

  206. So what can you put your money into

  207. that will really last?

  208. Not this world.

  209. Because Jesus gives a really helpful perspective in verse 9.

  210. He says,

  211. so that when it is gone,

  212. what Jesus is saying there is,

  213. there is no investment

  214. that is in this world

  215. that will last.

  216. Not one.

  217. There's no material thing.

  218. There's no asset.

  219. There's no place

  220. where you can put your money

  221. that will really,

  222. really last.

  223. And he's calling his disciples here

  224. to make a wise investment

  225. to put their money

  226. into something

  227. that will literally last forever.

  228. Put your money,

  229. he says,

  230. into building the kingdom of God.

  231. Use your money in such a way

  232. that there is glory in heaven.

  233. Put your money

  234. into something

  235. that will last forever.

  236. Now,

  237. what I love

  238. about the way

  239. that Jesus puts it here

  240. is that he doesn't just stay

  241. at that abstract level.

  242. Because I'm the sort of person

  243. who's logically convinced

  244. for the argument

  245. for long-term investment.

  246. You know,

  247. immediate pain

  248. for long-term gain.

  249. I'm totally,

  250. totally in for that,

  251. logically.

  252. But what Jesus says next

  253. is what moves my heart

  254. and causes me

  255. to open my wallet.

  256. This is what moves my heart.

  257. And I hope it does for you too.

  258. Look at how Jesus describes

  259. eternal dwellings

  260. in verse 9.

  261. This is how he describes heaven.

  262. Friends.

  263. Use your money now

  264. to gain friends

  265. who will welcome you

  266. into eternal dwellings.

  267. In other words,

  268. to get eternal friends.

  269. Let me quote one commentator

  270. who wrote on this verse,

  271. and it's the main point

  272. of this whole parable.

  273. He wrote,

  274. although these things,

  275. your property,

  276. your ability,

  277. your time,

  278. belong to this life only.

  279. Jesus says,

  280. yet what will happen to you

  281. when,

  282. then,

  283. when you pass into that life

  284. will depend on what you are doing

  285. with them here and now.

  286. Make sure that your use of them

  287. brings you into a fellowship

  288. of friends

  289. which will survive beyond death.

  290. That is definitely what Jesus is saying here.

  291. We look to money

  292. to give us security,

  293. significance.

  294. As I said last week,

  295. it's the identity scorecard for us

  296. and the possessions that we have.

  297. But genuine security and significance

  298. is not material.

  299. It's actually relational.

  300. In the end,

  301. the most important thing

  302. that everyone needs

  303. is love.

  304. We feel truly wealthy

  305. when we are loving people

  306. and are surrounded

  307. by people loving us back.

  308. You can get someone

  309. who is an absolute pauper

  310. and yet they feel so rich,

  311. feel so rich

  312. when they are surrounded by people

  313. who love them

  314. and who they love.

  315. That's because wealth is relational,

  316. not material.

  317. That's when you feel really alive

  318. and yet

  319. the love that we really need

  320. is out of reach for us

  321. in this life.

  322. We get a taste of it now.

  323. We get a foretaste of it

  324. but the best

  325. is yet to come.

  326. The thinking that heaven

  327. is a place of harps

  328. and halos

  329. and crowns

  330. and gold streets

  331. doesn't kind of move me

  332. in the same kind of way

  333. as heaven being

  334. a world of friendships

  335. and relationships

  336. and perfect love.

  337. That moves me.

  338. A place of deep relationships.

  339. A place of real love.

  340. A place where we love

  341. and are loved

  342. without any barriers

  343. at all.

  344. That is a place

  345. to really hope for

  346. and invest in now

  347. because

  348. the love that we experience

  349. in this world,

  350. the friendships,

  351. the relationships we experience

  352. in this world

  353. are a foretaste

  354. of what is to come

  355. but they fall

  356. so far short

  357. of what will be in heaven.

  358. love in this world

  359. both the receiving of it

  360. and the expressing of it

  361. is often a source of pain.

  362. There are barriers

  363. to loving

  364. and being loved

  365. in this world

  366. that will not exist in heaven

  367. and that's what makes heaven

  368. such an incredible prospect.

  369. that's why

  370. if you can make

  371. investments now

  372. to increase

  373. your experience

  374. of that

  375. that's a wise investment.

  376. See one of the barriers

  377. we face now

  378. that won't be there

  379. is that we are often

  380. as individuals

  381. not loved

  382. for our own sake.

  383. It's painful

  384. when we discover

  385. that people

  386. are not loving us

  387. for our own sake

  388. but actually

  389. using us

  390. to get something else.

  391. it's very rare

  392. for any of us

  393. to love

  394. another person

  395. totally

  396. for their own sake.

  397. Most love

  398. is a love

  399. in order to receive love

  400. and in heaven

  401. we will be loved

  402. absolutely

  403. completely

  404. fully

  405. for who we are.

  406. Another barrier

  407. for loving this world

  408. which is

  409. just a foretaste

  410. of what we become

  411. is the inability

  412. for us to express

  413. our love

  414. for others

  415. without any hindrance

  416. whatsoever.

  417. Things like pride

  418. selfishness

  419. defensiveness

  420. pettiness

  421. coldness

  422. means that we cannot

  423. fully completely

  424. express our love

  425. for another person

  426. even those

  427. who are the

  428. closest to us

  429. in this world.

  430. Even for me

  431. I mean

  432. I said this morning

  433. for me

  434. for Natalie

  435. I get to the end

  436. of each day

  437. and I realise

  438. how much

  439. I've failed

  440. to express

  441. the love

  442. that I've got

  443. deep down

  444. there somewhere

  445. it's like

  446. there's this ocean

  447. of love

  448. it's got it

  449. coming up

  450. through a straw

  451. you know

  452. like it's just

  453. just not coming

  454. out the way

  455. it's meant to.

  456. So much failure

  457. we can't even

  458. get close

  459. to expressing

  460. our love

  461. fully

  462. without some

  463. kind of

  464. hindrance

  465. but in heaven

  466. there'll be love

  467. without any

  468. impediment

  469. all sin

  470. pride

  471. selfishness

  472. pettiness

  473. coldness

  474. defensiveness

  475. it's going to

  476. be all gone.

  477. We also

  478. struggle in this

  479. world to have

  480. a mutual love

  481. is there anything

  482. more painful

  483. than to love

  484. someone more

  485. than they love

  486. you back?

  487. It's very rare

  488. to have a

  489. mutual love

  490. at the same

  491. time.

  492. In this place

  493. this world

  494. many of the

  495. people that we

  496. love

  497. we love

  498. more

  499. than they

  500. love us

  501. back

  502. and that

  503. is nothing

  504. but pain

  505. but heaven

  506. everyone

  507. will love

  508. everyone

  509. mutually

  510. and fully.

  511. There's also

  512. the barrier

  513. of another

  514. barrier of

  515. love in this

  516. world and

  517. that's the

  518. unhappiness

  519. of those

  520. we love.

  521. Think about

  522. this for a

  523. minute.

  524. This is for

  525. everyone here

  526. because you've

  527. all been kids

  528. and still

  529. are.

  530. Once you

  531. start having

  532. children

  533. once you

  534. start

  535. if you're

  536. a couple

  537. and you

  538. start having

  539. children

  540. for the

  541. rest of

  542. your life

  543. your happiness

  544. level never

  545. increases more

  546. than the

  547. unhappiness of

  548. one of your

  549. children

  550. or of your

  551. unhappiest

  552. child.

  553. Once you

  554. start having

  555. children

  556. your happiness

  557. level never

  558. increases more

  559. than your

  560. unhappiest

  561. child.

  562. Your unhappiest

  563. child.

  564. See what

  565. you've done

  566. to your

  567. parents?

  568. You know

  569. we can

  570. never be

  571. happier

  572. we can

  573. never be

  574. happier than

  575. the people

  576. we love

  577. because their

  578. heart becomes

  579. our heart

  580. and if you

  581. love more

  582. than five

  583. people any

  584. one time

  585. in this

  586. world you're

  587. always going

  588. to be

  589. unhappy.

  590. That's just

  591. a fact.

  592. C.S.

  593. Lewis said

  594. that if you

  595. don't want

  596. your heart

  597. to be

  598. broken then

  599. just stop

  600. loving

  601. people.

  602. Love is

  603. such a

  604. source of

  605. pain but

  606. of course

  607. if that's

  608. what you're

  609. going to

  610. do then

  611. you become

  612. a hard

  613. person and

  614. you're right

  615. on your

  616. way to

  617. hell.

  618. Love is

  619. such a

  620. source of

  621. pain but

  622. in heaven

  623. everyone

  624. will be

  625. perfectly

  626. happy filled

  627. with a

  628. never

  629. ceasing

  630. joy.

  631. But the

  632. greatest

  633. barrier to

  634. love in

  635. this world

  636. is the

  637. separation

  638. of love.

  639. We want

  640. a love

  641. where we

  642. will never

  643. be separated

  644. from the

  645. people that

  646. we love.

  647. It is

  648. painful knowing

  649. that when

  650. you marry

  651. someone it

  652. is highly

  653. likely that

  654. one of you

  655. will bury

  656. the other.

  657. Highly

  658. likely unless

  659. of course you

  660. both go down

  661. the plane

  662. crash or

  663. something like

  664. that.

  665. In my

  666. case I've

  667. got five

  668. people sitting

  669. around my

  670. dining room

  671. table and

  672. it's highly

  673. likely that

  674. one of us

  675. will be

  676. sitting at

  677. that table

  678. will see

  679. everyone else

  680. dead.

  681. Highly likely

  682. that one of

  683. us will see

  684. the rest

  685. dead.

  686. My mother

  687. experienced

  688. that in the

  689. last two

  690. weeks where

  691. she is now

  692. the only one

  693. left of

  694. two parents

  695. and four

  696. sisters.

  697. This is the

  698. way our

  699. relationships are

  700. in this

  701. world.

  702. But not

  703. there.

  704. Not there.

  705. We are

  706. made to

  707. desire the

  708. kind of

  709. relationships,

  710. the kind

  711. of friendships,

  712. the kind

  713. of love

  714. that is in

  715. the kingdom

  716. of God.

  717. We have

  718. been designed

  719. for what

  720. Jesus says

  721. heaven is

  722. going to be

  723. like.

  724. And knowing

  725. and experiencing

  726. the pain of

  727. relation to

  728. this world,

  729. it is so

  730. hard for us

  731. to imagine

  732. what perfect

  733. relationships and

  734. perfect love

  735. actually looks

  736. like.

  737. what the

  738. experience of

  739. that is going

  740. to be like.

  741. Knowing and

  742. experiencing the

  743. pain of this

  744. world, it's

  745. hard to know

  746. what it's

  747. going to be

  748. like.

  749. Hard to

  750. believe in

  751. fact.

  752. Just imagine

  753. what it would

  754. be like to

  755. completely

  756. believe it

  757. though.

  758. That what

  759. Jesus says

  760. about heaven

  761. is actually

  762. going to be

  763. true.

  764. Imagine what

  765. it would be

  766. to be completely

  767. sure of the

  768. future because

  769. of Jesus

  770. Christ and

  771. what he's

  772. done for

  773. us.

  774. Imagine that

  775. to believe in

  776. Jesus is to

  777. be able to

  778. live with

  779. God and

  780. friends in

  781. absolute

  782. perfect love

  783. forever.

  784. No barriers,

  785. no hindrance

  786. to joy and

  787. love.

  788. Just imagine

  789. what that

  790. would do to

  791. the way that

  792. you would

  793. live your

  794. life now.

  795. would we

  796. not use

  797. our worldly

  798. wealth now

  799. knowing that

  800. what really

  801. lasts is

  802. people,

  803. relationships,

  804. friends,

  805. something

  806. significant that

  807. we all have

  808. something to

  809. look forward

  810. to.

  811. And so

  812. don't put

  813. your money

  814. before people.

  815. Don't put

  816. your money

  817. before people.

  818. Don't put

  819. things before

  820. people.

  821. Put your

  822. money into

  823. solving people's

  824. needs in this

  825. world, the

  826. poor and the

  827. needy.

  828. Use your

  829. money, as it

  830. says here, to

  831. create a

  832. fellowship of

  833. friends that

  834. will survive

  835. beyond death.

  836. Friends who

  837. you don't even

  838. know.

  839. You won't even

  840. know that they're

  841. your friends until

  842. you get to

  843. heaven.

  844. And

  845. when people

  846. find hope and

  847. faith and

  848. love in

  849. Jesus, they

  850. will be your

  851. friends and

  852. they will be

  853. your friends

  854. forever.

  855. They will

  856. welcome you

  857. to heaven.

  858. They will

  859. love you and

  860. be loved by

  861. you without

  862. any barrier.

  863. And so

  864. this radical

  865. investment is

  866. to put the

  867. money you're

  868. a steward of,

  869. which you've

  870. been given

  871. by, by

  872. God, into

  873. connecting

  874. people with

  875. their God who

  876. loves them like

  877. this without

  878. any barriers.

  879. that's the

  880. wise investment.

  881. Put your

  882. money into

  883. connecting

  884. people with

  885. their God

  886. who loves

  887. them like

  888. this.

  889. Because all

  890. of this hope

  891. and all this

  892. joy is

  893. possible because

  894. we are

  895. recipients of

  896. the ultimate

  897. love and

  898. friendship.

  899. 2 Corinthians

  900. 8, the

  901. Apostle Paul is

  902. encouraging the

  903. church in

  904. Corinth to give

  905. generously to a

  906. great need in

  907. the same way

  908. that other

  909. churches are

  910. done.

  911. And he

  912. doesn't order

  913. them to do

  914. it.

  915. He says, I'm

  916. not going to

  917. order you to

  918. do this.

  919. I want you to

  920. be compelled

  921. by love.

  922. And he

  923. shows them how

  924. to do it.

  925. He says,

  926. think about

  927. this.

  928. Think about

  929. Jesus Christ.

  930. Though he

  931. was rich,

  932. yet for your

  933. sake he

  934. became poor

  935. so that you

  936. through his

  937. poverty might

  938. become filthy

  939. rich.

  940. Relationally

  941. rich.

  942. experiencing

  943. love like

  944. you have

  945. never

  946. experienced

  947. before.

  948. You see,

  949. Jesus is

  950. the one

  951. friend who

  952. emptied

  953. himself of

  954. everything to

  955. turn his

  956. enemies into

  957. his eternal

  958. friends.

  959. Jesus is,

  960. in fact,

  961. the true

  962. steward here.

  963. As recipients

  964. of the ultimate

  965. friendship, we

  966. get to live

  967. with him

  968. forever in

  969. perfect love.

  970. And so use

  971. your money in

  972. a way that's

  973. controlled by

  974. that reality.

  975. Guess what?

  976. You and I,

  977. here today,

  978. we're in

  979. exactly the

  980. same boat as

  981. the shrewd

  982. manager.

  983. I'm not

  984. sure how

  985. long he's,

  986. how much

  987. notice he

  988. was given,

  989. how many

  990. days or

  991. weeks he

  992. had before

  993. he had to

  994. fold up the

  995. books,

  996. but in

  997. this moment

  998. the books

  999. were still

  1000. open,

  1001. he still

  1002. had a

  1003. pen,

  1004. and he

  1005. was still

  1006. in control.

  1007. And he

  1008. acted.

  1009. He had a

  1010. chance to

  1011. act in view

  1012. of the

  1013. future,

  1014. and he

  1015. did it.

  1016. And I've

  1017. been calling

  1018. two previous

  1019. congregations,

  1020. I'm doing the

  1021. same here,

  1022. across St.

  1023. Paul's today,

  1024. calling us

  1025. all to make

  1026. a radical

  1027. investment.

  1028. That's our

  1029. vision.

  1030. Our vision

  1031. says we are

  1032. desperate for

  1033. the world

  1034. around us

  1035. to encounter

  1036. Jesus.

  1037. We are

  1038. desperate to

  1039. make eternal

  1040. friends.

  1041. who will

  1042. love us

  1043. and whom

  1044. we will

  1045. love for

  1046. eternity.

  1047. Now,

  1048. following on

  1049. from 1

  1050. Chronicles 29,

  1051. the process

  1052. that King

  1053. David led

  1054. Israel in

  1055. there,

  1056. for the

  1057. last,

  1058. this is our

  1059. ninth time

  1060. doing it,

  1061. in my time

  1062. here,

  1063. we have

  1064. followed a

  1065. process.

  1066. The process

  1067. is I

  1068. pledge what

  1069. my giving

  1070. is,

  1071. because I

  1072. believe if

  1073. you've read

  1074. what I wrote

  1075. and have

  1076. distributed to

  1077. the parish

  1078. in the last

  1079. week,

  1080. is that

  1081. giving is a

  1082. spiritual matter,

  1083. it's not a

  1084. financial matter,

  1085. and so there's

  1086. financial accountability

  1087. for the top

  1088. right down.

  1089. So Natalie and

  1090. I, each year,

  1091. we declare what

  1092. we're giving,

  1093. we're the only

  1094. ones who do

  1095. it, parish

  1096. council then

  1097. follow suit,

  1098. and staff

  1099. follow suit.

  1100. So Natalie and

  1101. I are seeking to

  1102. increase our

  1103. giving for next

  1104. year, and

  1105. we're committing

  1106. $1,400 a

  1107. month for our

  1108. vision, this

  1109. church's vision,

  1110. for people to

  1111. encounter Jesus.

  1112. We've also

  1113. contributed $1,000

  1114. to the $70,000

  1115. target.

  1116. So far, parish

  1117. council and

  1118. staff together

  1119. have pledged

  1120. $3,500 a

  1121. week, and

  1122. $18,200

  1123. towards the

  1124. $70,000

  1125. target.

  1126. That is a

  1127. significant lead

  1128. from your

  1129. leaders.

  1130. That is,

  1131. parish council

  1132. and staff make

  1133. up 10% of the

  1134. parish in

  1135. terms of

  1136. numbers.

  1137. And so

  1138. far, they

  1139. are giving

  1140. one-third of

  1141. our 2018

  1142. budget, and

  1143. a quarter of

  1144. the project

  1145. target.

  1146. 10%, one-third

  1147. and a quarter.

  1148. They're leading

  1149. us in this, and

  1150. so I would

  1151. invite you, in

  1152. fact, I would

  1153. implore you to

  1154. follow us and

  1155. to make an

  1156. investment in

  1157. eternal

  1158. friends.

  1159. We have

  1160. got enormous

  1161. opportunities.

  1162. I would

  1163. encourage you to

  1164. see this project

  1165. of employing

  1166. someone for

  1167. children's

  1168. ministry.

  1169. There are

  1170. children coming

  1171. into our

  1172. neighbourhood all

  1173. over the

  1174. place.

  1175. Invest in

  1176. making friends

  1177. from the next

  1178. generation to

  1179. employ a

  1180. children's

  1181. pastor.

  1182. Takeshi, who

  1183. was here this

  1184. morning from

  1185. Japan, he is

  1186. a native of

  1187. the largest

  1188. unreached

  1189. people group

  1190. in the world,

  1191. and we've

  1192. got an

  1193. opportunity to

  1194. invest in

  1195. him.

  1196. Invest in

  1197. making eternal

  1198. friends on

  1199. another part of

  1200. the world who

  1201. will never

  1202. meet till we

  1203. get to heaven.

  1204. And he goes,

  1205. you are the

  1206. guys who

  1207. funded Takeshi.

  1208. I'm here

  1209. because of

  1210. him.

  1211. Make your

  1212. eternal joy

  1213. complete and

  1214. invest in

  1215. eternal

  1216. friends.

  1217. I'm going

  1218. to invite

  1219. Nick up.

  1220. What I'm

  1221. going to do

  1222. is Nick's

  1223. going to lead

  1224. us in a

  1225. song.

  1226. And as

  1227. he does

  1228. that, we

  1229. are going

  1230. to take

  1231. an opportunity

  1232. to sit and

  1233. reflect.

  1234. Because some

  1235. of us may

  1236. have come

  1237. prepared, some

  1238. of us are

  1239. not prepared

  1240. at all.

  1241. But if you've

  1242. come prepared,

  1243. you might go,

  1244. I need to

  1245. rethink what

  1246. I've just

  1247. done because

  1248. there's not

  1249. enough gold

  1250. factor on it,

  1251. there's not

  1252. enough sacrifice

  1253. in it.

  1254. For those of you

  1255. who haven't

  1256. prepared, this is

  1257. an opportunity

  1258. for you to get

  1259. these cards out,

  1260. take the

  1261. project card out

  1262. and take the

  1263. pledge card out.

  1264. We've already

  1265. looked at

  1266. serve, take the

  1267. project card,

  1268. the pledge card

  1269. out.

  1270. This is an

  1271. opportunity for you

  1272. and what the

  1273. gold factor is

  1274. going to be for

  1275. you in your

  1276. financial commitment

  1277. to this church.

  1278. And I'll come

  1279. back up in a

  1280. moment.
