  1. Two other self-indulgent moments just quickly.

  2. I have left, for anyone who did want to sign up for prayer updates while we're away,

  3. I left a sheet out on the Connect desk last chance because we will be gone after today.

  4. So please do do that.

  5. And the other thing I wanted to say is we're jumping into a bit of 1 Peter today

  6. without the chance to kind of chase the rest of it.

  7. So I'm leaving it on you to keep reading 1 Peter over Christmas.

  8. It's a good book any time, but hopefully after today your appetite will be sufficiently wetted

  9. so that you will chase that and get all the gold that God has placed in there.

  10. Let's leave me and all the distractions to the side now

  11. and ask that God would focus us on his word and what he wants to say.

  12. Father God, you are incredibly good.

  13. We have already talked about and sung about and prayed about the joy that is Christmas,

  14. the joy and wonder it is that you would enter your creation for sinful people like us.

  15. And so, Father, we ask that this morning as you speak to us in your word

  16. that you would reveal yourself to us,

  17. that you would give us a vision for the lives that you would have us live,

  18. that you would give us the ability to grasp even tighter

  19. the substance of the hope that you have purchased for us through the blood of Jesus.

  20. Father, we pray that you would equip us by your spirit to be salt and light in the world.

  21. Amen.

  22. Some of you may not have noticed, but just in late November,

  23. Google, the internet search engine in Australia, made an interesting decision.

  24. If you were to search for, for example, the opening hours of Chatswood Chase on Christmas,

  25. the tagline at the bottom inserted by Google would have read,

  26. this date may be impacted by Family Day.

  27. Not Christmas Day, Family Day.

  28. Somebody in Google's office in Australia, it wasn't any other country that I'm aware of,

  29. made the decision that Christmas Day was not inclusive

  30. and that Family Day was a better title.

  31. They've since changed it back, you'll be interested to know.

  32. But at least for this one person and sufficiently that it made it onto the internet,

  33. the course for inclusion, the course for being more open-minded,

  34. is the removal of all things Christian.

  35. Over the past few months in our country and in our city,

  36. because of the new plebiscite,

  37. you will remember that there has been a chorus in our political landscape

  38. declaring that faith and religion must be removed from the political and the public sphere.

  39. You can have your faith, you can believe in Jesus, just shut up about it.

  40. And don't let it come into our decision-making.

  41. Don't force it on anyone else.

  42. Now, aside from the fact that that completely misunderstands what it is to have faith

  43. and to believe in a Christ who came and entered in and gives us hope for more than this life,

  44. it's interesting that the particular religion that needs to be removed,

  45. at least in our context, is Christianity.

  46. That's the one that can't have a voice

  47. because it's the one that rubs against the grain of the culture that we exist in.

  48. Over the past few years, you may also remember an enthusiastic little lobby group known as FIIRUS.

  49. It's creatively titled Fairness in Religion in Schools,

  50. which is a euphemism for Stop Teaching Kids About Jesus.

  51. Aside from the fact that scripture or religious education in schools is completely voluntary,

  52. the accusation by this group is that the teaching of Christianity is oppressive and harmful

  53. and shouldn't be taught to teenagers in schools.

  54. It would be fair to say, just these examples and there's plenty more,

  55. that if you are a Christian and you are listening to the world around you,

  56. the message that you're getting is,

  57. keep your faith to yourself.

  58. If you want to believe in Jesus, it stays in your house, it stays in your head,

  59. it's not something for public consumption.

  60. And yet, as you hear that message,

  61. and you turn up to church on a Sunday,

  62. you go to your community group,

  63. you open the Bible,

  64. you are also hearing the message,

  65. in fact, the command from God's Word,

  66. to be light in the world,

  67. to declare the hope of the Gospel.

  68. At best,

  69. we're living in a tension.

  70. At worst,

  71. you might be living in a deep confusion and discouragement.

  72. So how do we live,

  73. as Christians,

  74. with that tension?

  75. How do we walk out of here with the enthusiasm of being gathered with God's people,

  76. and the encouragement of the Gospel,

  77. and the hope we have for Heaven,

  78. into a world that not only doesn't want to hear it,

  79. but may even persecute us for what we believe?

  80. How do we live in a hostile environment?

  81. Well, 1 Peter is a letter written to Christians scattered throughout what is modern-day Turkey.

  82. And we don't know how the Gospel got to these Christians exactly.

  83. It could have been people who were converted and travelled there.

  84. It could have been missionary journeys.

  85. But what we do know is that the Christians in those regions

  86. were beginning to experience the kind of hostility and isolation

  87. that maybe you're experiencing at the moment.

  88. The hostility from work colleagues,

  89. the being looked over for promotions,

  90. the avoidance of your neighbours,

  91. the isolation that comes from living in a culture

  92. that you just don't quite fit into.

  93. See, the culture in their day was heavily Roman.

  94. And so that meant that social interaction for them

  95. was heavily tied up in pagan rituals.

  96. So you would gather and you would have your feasts

  97. around different festivals and sacrifices.

  98. Your day-to-day existence was dependent

  99. on the willingness of your neighbours,

  100. the people you lived around,

  101. being willing to trade with you,

  102. being willing to buy from you,

  103. being willing to sell to you.

  104. And these Christians were experiencing the beginnings

  105. of what would become a bloody and severe persecution.

  106. It's before it gets to its worst.

  107. In the following decades,

  108. the Emperor Nero would unleash

  109. one of the bloodiest persecutions of the Christian church

  110. that history will ever know.

  111. And so these Christians,

  112. as the hostility slowly ramped up,

  113. were understandably tempted to compromise,

  114. tempted to adjust,

  115. tempted to keep their faith to themselves,

  116. tempted to modernise what they believed

  117. and maybe include some of these other religious festivals

  118. with the Jesus that they were trying to follow.

  119. And so Peter writes a message to these Christians

  120. and it's a message that you and I need today

  121. and every day until Jesus calls us home.

  122. It's a message we need

  123. because the reality is we're in the middle of similar pressures.

  124. I'm almost reluctant to use the word persecution.

  125. I think that some of our brothers and sisters in the world

  126. who follow Jesus are experiencing persecution.

  127. We're maybe on the beginning of a path of hostility,

  128. but it's getting harder.

  129. And it's going to get harder.

  130. So how do we live in a world that is hostile?

  131. First, remember who you are.

  132. Remember who you are.

  133. Before we focus too much on the world out there

  134. and how to engage them,

  135. on the circumstances, the culture we live in,

  136. we need to take stock of who we are.

  137. We need clarity on our identity as followers of Jesus

  138. because it's just as significant a factor

  139. in how we live and how we experience our lives

  140. as anything that can externally influence you.

  141. I mean, this is simple science.

  142. Any reaction is dependent on two elements.

  143. If you have just petrol, it's fine.

  144. Petrol and fire equals explosion.

  145. Petrol and water, just a mess.

  146. Any reaction is dependent on what both elements bring to the conversation.

  147. And so even though the world around us might feel like a flame,

  148. might feel hostile, might feel angry,

  149. that's only an issue if we're a flammable element.

  150. That's only an issue if we come to that fire as paper,

  151. with a flimsy identity that's easily burned and easily consumed.

  152. If we're paper, we should be worried.

  153. We should be avoiding the world.

  154. We should be fleeing to the hills.

  155. But if we're gold,

  156. then the flame is for our benefit.

  157. The flame is a good thing.

  158. The flame is something to be pursued.

  159. It purifies us.

  160. It strengthens us.

  161. So the first question we need to ask

  162. as we begin to experience hostility in the world that we live in

  163. is what are we made of?

  164. What are we made of?

  165. So if you're a Christian, who are you?

  166. Verse 1 there in 1 Peter 1,

  167. that Jess read out for us.

  168. See, you could stop after three words there.

  169. If you are a Christian,

  170. you are God's elect.

  171. That means you are chosen.

  172. He chose you before the creation of the world.

  173. Before He'd made all that we experience and enjoy,

  174. He'd already chosen to do Christmas.

  175. He'd already decided He was going to send His Son

  176. for you specifically.

  177. And now by the power of His Spirit,

  178. He has made you His.

  179. You belong to Him.

  180. You are His possession.

  181. He chose you to be somebody who is at home with Him,

  182. who is more comfortable with Him.

  183. He chose you for something more than this world,

  184. something better.

  185. In chapter 2 of 1 Peter,

  186. He goes on to say that

  187. He made Christians to be a holy nation.

  188. That means to be set apart for something else.

  189. He made Christians to be a royal priesthood,

  190. meaning that they are representative of something else,

  191. representative of the new home,

  192. the new identity that He has purchased for them.

  193. If you are a Christian,

  194. this is not your home.

  195. This is not your home.

  196. You do not belong here.

  197. And the upside of that is

  198. God has chosen you for something better.

  199. And so we need to hope for something better.

  200. Have a look at verse 3.

  201. You could just re-read those verses over and over.

  202. The hope that Jesus has purchased for you

  203. through His death and resurrection

  204. is a living hope.

  205. It's a hope that is so substantial,

  206. it will continue to grow

  207. as you begin to see more of how good God is.

  208. It is a hope that cannot perish, spoil or fade.

  209. See, before Jesus,

  210. every single human individual's life

  211. has the same boundary.

  212. Death.

  213. That's the end point.

  214. For every single human without Jesus,

  215. because people reject God and ignore Him,

  216. we're unworthy of heaven.

  217. And so the offer of eternal life,

  218. the offer of life for more than just your

  219. 80, 90, 100 years,

  220. is actually off the table.

  221. We all have the same fences.

  222. You're born, you grow up,

  223. you work, you play,

  224. and then you die.

  225. It's all over.

  226. You can't take anything with you.

  227. Finished.

  228. And so if that's it,

  229. then we should eat, drink and be merry.

  230. We should spend our lives

  231. trying to squeeze everything out of it that we can,

  232. collecting experiences,

  233. collecting stuff,

  234. doing whatever we can

  235. to get as much enjoyment as possible

  236. out of right now.

  237. But,

  238. praise be to the God and Father

  239. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  240. who's given us new birth

  241. into a living hope.

  242. See, because Jesus rose again,

  243. because He's not still in the grave,

  244. He proved that He's more powerful than death.

  245. He proved that when we trust Him

  246. with our lives,

  247. when we follow Him

  248. with everything that we've got,

  249. we get reborn.

  250. We get a new life.

  251. We get a hope that lasts

  252. well beyond the death,

  253. well beyond 80, 90, 100.

  254. It's a living hope

  255. that doesn't perish,

  256. that doesn't spoil,

  257. that doesn't fade.

  258. If you are a Christian,

  259. you have been chosen

  260. for unending life.

  261. Death is not your finish line.

  262. And so that changes

  263. how we experience right now.

  264. If you are not a Christian,

  265. the hope that Jesus offers,

  266. the reason that He bothered

  267. to come as a baby at Christmas,

  268. the reason He lived

  269. and died and rose again,

  270. is so that death

  271. would not be your finish line.

  272. So that you could stand

  273. in the face of sickness,

  274. in the face of death,

  275. in the face of rust

  276. and decay,

  277. and know that nothing

  278. can take the eternal life

  279. that Jesus offers from you.

  280. this inheritance,

  281. verse 4,

  282. is kept in heaven for you.

  283. No one can take it from you.

  284. This inheritance is kept

  285. in heaven for you

  286. who through faith

  287. are shielded

  288. by God's power

  289. until the coming

  290. of the salvation

  291. that is ready to be revealed

  292. in the last time.

  293. The inheritance

  294. that reshapes

  295. our whole existence

  296. and our perspective

  297. on our circumstances,

  298. that even reshapes us,

  299. the thing that we hope for,

  300. the thing that we look forward to,

  301. our hope is for salvation.

  302. That's what draws us forward.

  303. That's not just avoiding death.

  304. It's at least that.

  305. But the salvation

  306. that God offers

  307. is himself.

  308. The thing God

  309. is keeping for you

  310. in heaven

  311. is a place

  312. with him.

  313. God is shielding people,

  314. his people,

  315. for himself.

  316. So in verse 5 there,

  317. it's salvation

  318. that will be revealed.

  319. But if you skip down

  320. to verse 7,

  321. it talks about

  322. our refined faith

  323. being to the praise of God.

  324. When?

  325. What is revealed?

  326. Jesus Christ.

  327. Salvation is not

  328. some abstract concept

  329. where you just get

  330. set free.

  331. The salvation

  332. that God offers

  333. is a relationship

  334. with him.

  335. An unhindered relationship.

  336. A face-to-face relationship.

  337. The eternal life

  338. that God has purchased

  339. through the death

  340. of his son Jesus

  341. is not just living

  342. forever.

  343. forever.

  344. It's life

  345. plugged into

  346. the limitless source

  347. of life and goodness,

  348. God himself.

  349. It's life

  350. in an unhindered

  351. relationship

  352. with God

  353. through Jesus.

  354. See,

  355. the unfading

  356. inheritance

  357. of God's elect,

  358. the thing

  359. that we hope for,

  360. the thing

  361. that transforms

  362. the way we experience

  363. hostility

  364. in this world,

  365. is the secure

  366. salvation

  367. of a place

  368. that's prepared

  369. for us

  370. in heaven.

  371. It's the confidence

  372. we have

  373. that because

  374. Jesus died

  375. and rose again,

  376. not only does God

  377. love us,

  378. not only is death

  379. defeated,

  380. but our names

  381. are written

  382. in heaven.

  383. There is a specific

  384. place that God

  385. has prepared

  386. for you

  387. that no one

  388. else can take

  389. and not only

  390. is God

  391. preparing that

  392. place for when

  393. you get there,

  394. but he is

  395. shielding you

  396. every step

  397. of the way

  398. from now

  399. until then.

  400. it may be

  401. hostile,

  402. but as God's

  403. chosen people,

  404. we're protected,

  405. we're secure,

  406. and our

  407. inheritance can

  408. never perish,

  409. spoil,

  410. or fade.

  411. How do we live

  412. in this hostile

  413. world?

  414. Remember

  415. whose

  416. you are.

  417. You're

  418. God's

  419. chosen

  420. who chose

  421. you

  422. and who

  423. gave you

  424. new birth

  425. through the

  426. resurrection

  427. of his

  428. son.

  429. Remember

  430. who you

  431. are,

  432. God's

  433. chosen

  434. son

  435. or

  436. daughter

  437. with a

  438. glorious

  439. inheritance

  440. that awaits

  441. you.

  442. In

  443. hostility,

  444. remember

  445. who you

  446. are.

  447. In

  448. adversity,

  449. remember

  450. who you

  451. are.

  452. Even

  453. in

  454. prosperity,

  455. remember

  456. you

  457. were

  458. chosen.

  459. You

  460. have

  461. a

  462. living

  463. hope.

  464. Remember

  465. who you

  466. are,

  467. and the

  468. second

  469. thing

  470. is,

  471. remember

  472. where

  473. you

  474. are.

  475. Remember

  476. where

  477. you

  478. are.

  479. So

  480. Peter

  481. is writing

  482. this

  483. letter

  484. to a

  485. diverse

  486. group

  487. of

  488. people

  489. scattered

  490. across

  491. a big

  492. geographical

  493. area.

  494. Their

  495. cities

  496. would have

  497. been

  498. distinct

  499. in these

  500. different

  501. provinces,

  502. the way

  503. they

  504. functioned

  505. and

  506. operated,

  507. but he

  508. still

  509. addresses

  510. them

  511. all

  512. with

  513. that

  514. title

  515. elect

  516. and

  517. then

  518. exile.

  519. Elect

  520. is

  521. who

  522. they

  523. are,

  524. exile

  525. is

  526. where

  527. they

  528. are.

  529. Now

  530. exile

  531. is a

  532. big

  533. Old

  534. Testament

  535. word.

  536. In

  537. the

  538. Old

  539. Testament

  540. exile

  541. talks

  542. about

  543. the

  544. time

  545. where

  546. God's

  547. people

  548. Israel

  549. after

  550. repeatedly

  551. disobeying

  552. God

  553. and

  554. worshipping

  555. idols

  556. and

  557. bowing

  558. down

  559. to

  560. false

  561. gods,

  562. finally

  563. they

  564. are

  565. taken

  566. into

  567. exile

  568. or

  569. captivity

  570. by the

  571. Babylonian

  572. army.

  573. So exile

  574. is where

  575. they're

  576. removed

  577. from

  578. their

  579. country,

  580. from

  581. their

  582. homeland

  583. and

  584. dumped

  585. into

  586. this

  587. new

  588. place,

  589. they're

  590. forced

  591. to

  592. live

  593. in

  594. this

  595. new

  596. place

  597. without

  598. their

  599. culture,

  600. without

  601. their

  602. routines.

  603. So exile

  604. is usually

  605. politically

  606. motivated.

  607. In this

  608. case,

  609. the idea

  610. was that

  611. if you

  612. take Israel

  613. away from

  614. their

  615. home and

  616. you dilute

  617. them into

  618. the Babylonian

  619. culture,

  620. what you do

  621. is you

  622. weaken

  623. them as

  624. a nation.

  625. You

  626. take away

  627. the things

  628. that make

  629. them

  630. them and

  631. you dissolve

  632. the culture

  633. and the

  634. values.

  635. That's

  636. Old Testament

  637. exile for

  638. Israel.

  639. Now,

  640. Peter's not

  641. just writing

  642. to Jewish

  643. people here.

  644. There might

  645. have been

  646. some Jews

  647. in these

  648. provinces,

  649. but he's

  650. not writing

  651. to just

  652. Jewish

  653. people.

  654. These

  655. people,

  656. and you

  657. and I

  658. come from

  659. a whole

  660. bunch of

  661. different

  662. countries

  663. and ethnic

  664. backgrounds,

  665. these people

  666. are not

  667. in geographic

  668. exile like

  669. Israel was,

  670. they're all

  671. spread out.

  672. Now,

  673. I'm not

  674. aware of

  675. anyone in

  676. this room

  677. who is in

  678. geographic

  679. exile,

  680. although you

  681. might be,

  682. but the

  683. point is

  684. for these

  685. people and

  686. for us

  687. is that

  688. they're

  689. exiled

  690. because of

  691. who they

  692. now are.

  693. Now that

  694. they're God's

  695. chosen people,

  696. now that

  697. their hope

  698. is a living

  699. hope in the

  700. death and

  701. resurrection of

  702. Jesus,

  703. their home

  704. is now with

  705. God in

  706. heaven.

  707. That's

  708. where they

  709. belong.

  710. That's

  711. their

  712. defining

  713. reality.

  714. That's

  715. their

  716. passport.

  717. They

  718. don't

  719. belong in

  720. this

  721. world.

  722. They

  723. are in

  724. exile in

  725. this

  726. world.

  727. And so

  728. if you

  729. are a

  730. Christian,

  731. your

  732. inheritance

  733. and your

  734. hope and

  735. your

  736. identity,

  737. your

  738. citizenship

  739. is in

  740. heaven with

  741. God.

  742. That's

  743. where you

  744. belong.

  745. That's

  746. what you're

  747. looking forward

  748. to.

  749. That's

  750. why you

  751. feel

  752. frustrated

  753. about the

  754. world that

  755. we live

  756. in and

  757. the things

  758. that are

  759. wrong with

  760. it because

  761. you know

  762. you were

  763. made for

  764. something

  765. better.

  766. Your

  767. exile is

  768. not

  769. Australia.

  770. It's

  771. this

  772. world,

  773. still full

  774. of sin

  775. and death

  776. and opposition.

  777. Now the

  778. whole concept

  779. of exile,

  780. and this is

  781. why this is

  782. really important

  783. for us,

  784. the whole

  785. concept of

  786. exile has

  787. built into

  788. it the

  789. hope or

  790. the longing

  791. for return.

  792. While Israel

  793. was in

  794. Babylon,

  795. initially they

  796. longed to

  797. return home.

  798. They longed

  799. to go back

  800. to where

  801. they were

  802. from and

  803. where they

  804. were supposed

  805. to be.

  806. But then

  807. progressively they

  808. settled into

  809. the culture.

  810. Some people

  811. became more

  812. Babylonian than

  813. Jewish.

  814. And at that

  815. point it ceases

  816. to be exile.

  817. It's just

  818. immigration.

  819. You've moved

  820. and you're in a

  821. new place and

  822. you've made

  823. yourself at

  824. home.

  825. Exile has

  826. built into

  827. it that sense

  828. that I don't

  829. belong here.

  830. I want to

  831. be where I

  832. where I'm

  833. supposed to

  834. be.

  835. I want to

  836. be at

  837. home.

  838. And if

  839. you're a

  840. Christian,

  841. that home

  842. is heaven.

  843. This is

  844. not heaven.

  845. I'm assuming

  846. that's not a

  847. newsflash for

  848. people.

  849. Even though

  850. there's plenty

  851. of good things

  852. that God

  853. blesses us

  854. with,

  855. even though

  856. Christmas is a

  857. joyful time,

  858. this is not

  859. heaven.

  860. And so as

  861. God's chosen

  862. people,

  863. as his

  864. elect,

  865. we need to

  866. cultivate,

  867. we need to

  868. embrace a

  869. holy discontent

  870. with where we

  871. live.

  872. We need to

  873. look around

  874. the world

  875. that we are

  876. in and

  877. long for the

  878. something better

  879. that God is

  880. keeping for

  881. us.

  882. and that

  883. God is

  884. keeping us

  885. for.

  886. We need to

  887. be very

  888. nervous,

  889. maybe even

  890. catch ourselves

  891. if all our

  892. dreams and

  893. hopes and

  894. aspirations are

  895. confined to

  896. what's going to

  897. happen to us

  898. within our

  899. lifespan on

  900. earth.

  901. If that's all

  902. you're aiming

  903. for, maybe

  904. you've

  905. immigrated.

  906. Maybe you've

  907. forgotten where

  908. your home is.

  909. Maybe you've

  910. forgotten who

  911. you are.

  912. We need to

  913. cultivate and

  914. embrace a

  915. holy discontent

  916. and long for

  917. the better

  918. home that

  919. God's keeping

  920. for us.

  921. Verse 6,

  922. in all this

  923. you greatly

  924. rejoice,

  925. though now for

  926. a little while

  927. you may have

  928. had to suffer

  929. grief in all

  930. kinds of

  931. trials.

  932. One of the

  933. reasons we

  934. long for that

  935. future is

  936. because we

  937. know that

  938. where we

  939. are is

  940. temporary.

  941. We know

  942. that the

  943. suffering we

  944. experience,

  945. the loneliness,

  946. the sickness,

  947. the hurt,

  948. the pain,

  949. the death,

  950. it's temporary.

  951. It's fading.

  952. Even the

  953. blessing,

  954. even the

  955. good things

  956. we know that

  957. we have in

  958. this life are

  959. temporary.

  960. But they're

  961. still real.

  962. It still

  963. hurts when

  964. we suffer.

  965. It's still

  966. unpleasant to

  967. be lonely or

  968. sick or to

  969. lose a loved

  970. one.

  971. people.

  972. It's

  973. why Peter

  974. says you

  975. will suffer

  976. trials of

  977. many kinds.

  978. He's being

  979. pretty inclusive

  980. here.

  981. He's not

  982. saying that

  983. some of the

  984. trials in

  985. your life are

  986. supernatural

  987. spiritual

  988. opposition and

  989. other ones are

  990. just unlucky.

  991. That's not how

  992. life works.

  993. Life doesn't

  994. get compartmentalised

  995. into the

  996. spiritual stuff

  997. and then the

  998. other stuff.

  999. our whole

  1000. lives are

  1001. part of a

  1002. broad spiritual

  1003. reality and

  1004. so the trials

  1005. may come in

  1006. the form of

  1007. demonic

  1008. oppression or

  1009. a crisis of

  1010. faith.

  1011. But equally

  1012. they might

  1013. come as

  1014. sickness,

  1015. financial

  1016. struggle,

  1017. relationship

  1018. breakdown.

  1019. Those are

  1020. the tools

  1021. that Satan

  1022. loves to

  1023. use.

  1024. They're the

  1025. things that

  1026. Satan loves

  1027. to use to

  1028. distract you

  1029. from the

  1030. hope that

  1031. you have.

  1032. To make

  1033. you desire

  1034. and pine for

  1035. the comfort

  1036. that the

  1037. world can

  1038. offer you

  1039. right now.

  1040. But later

  1041. on in one

  1042. Peter,

  1043. he says,

  1044. dear friends,

  1045. do not be

  1046. surprised at

  1047. the fiery

  1048. ordeal that

  1049. has come on

  1050. you to test

  1051. you as

  1052. though something

  1053. strange were

  1054. happening to

  1055. you.

  1056. when we

  1057. forget we

  1058. are in

  1059. exile,

  1060. we begin

  1061. to wonder

  1062. why there

  1063. would be any

  1064. difficulty in

  1065. our lives.

  1066. We begin to

  1067. measure how

  1068. happy God

  1069. is with us

  1070. by how

  1071. smoothly our

  1072. life is

  1073. going.

  1074. Things are

  1075. going well,

  1076. so I must

  1077. be honouring

  1078. God.

  1079. So,

  1080. all of

  1081. these things

  1082. are tools

  1083. that Satan

  1084. would use

  1085. to turn

  1086. you away

  1087. from God

  1088. and to

  1089. doubt his

  1090. goodness.

  1091. But those

  1092. struggles that

  1093. we experience

  1094. now,

  1095. while we

  1096. live in

  1097. exile,

  1098. serve an

  1099. eternal

  1100. purpose

  1101. if we are

  1102. followers of

  1103. Jesus.

  1104. Verse 7,

  1105. these have

  1106. come,

  1107. the trials

  1108. have come,

  1109. so that the

  1110. proven genuineness

  1111. of your

  1112. faith,

  1113. of greater

  1114. worth than

  1115. gold which

  1116. perishes even

  1117. though refined

  1118. by fire,

  1119. may result in

  1120. praise,

  1121. glory and

  1122. honour when

  1123. Jesus Christ

  1124. is revealed.

  1125. We're not

  1126. paper in the

  1127. face of

  1128. hostility.

  1129. We're gold that

  1130. increases in

  1131. purity and

  1132. value as we

  1133. get put under

  1134. the trial of

  1135. flame.

  1136. The reason,

  1137. the purpose,

  1138. the benefit of

  1139. the trials that

  1140. you will face,

  1141. maybe that you're

  1142. in right now.

  1143. They're the

  1144. Father's tools for

  1145. refining you,

  1146. for proving you

  1147. and to ensuring

  1148. that you finish

  1149. the race.

  1150. See, God in

  1151. his incredible

  1152. love has taken

  1153. Satan's tools that

  1154. would distract you,

  1155. that would drag you

  1156. away and he has

  1157. transformed them into

  1158. opportunities to

  1159. grow you.

  1160. Opportunities to

  1161. strengthen you,

  1162. opportunities to

  1163. increase your joy

  1164. in him and to

  1165. help you discover

  1166. that in the grief

  1167. and in the loss,

  1168. Jesus is better.

  1169. That no matter

  1170. what else happens,

  1171. no matter what can

  1172. be taken away from

  1173. you, the

  1174. inheritance that

  1175. can never perish,

  1176. spoil or fade,

  1177. Jesus is more

  1178. than sufficient.

  1179. We are so wired

  1180. as people to

  1181. avoid suffering.

  1182. We're all about

  1183. pain avoidance.

  1184. We're conditioned

  1185. to aim for the

  1186. short-term solution,

  1187. to fix it today

  1188. and deal with

  1189. tomorrow's consequences

  1190. when we get there.

  1191. We get frustrated

  1192. with God when our

  1193. lives are not running

  1194. smoothly.

  1195. Why are you allowing

  1196. this, God?

1197. Why don't you help me,

  1198. God?

  1199. What have I done

  1200. wrong, God?

  1201. As if comfort was

  1202. somehow a measure

  1203. of God's approval.

  1204. Have we forgotten

  1205. who we are?

  1206. Have we forgotten

  1207. that we are the

  1208. ones chosen and

  1209. purchased by the

  1210. death of Jesus?

  1211. Have we forgotten

1212. that we have a hope

  1213. for heaven?

  1214. Have we forgotten

  1215. that this is exile?

  1216. That there should be

  1217. a certain level of

  1218. unpleasantness?

1219. Even if at its very

  1220. base level it's just

  1221. the fact that it's

  1222. not yet heaven and

  1223. we know that's where

  1224. we're supposed to be?

  1225. Have we traded in

  1226. the living hope

  1227. and our unfading

  1228. inheritance

  1229. for temporary comfort?

  1230. Now I'm not saying

  1231. go looking for

  1232. suffering.

  1233. You don't have to.

  1234. Just follow Jesus.

  1235. It'll find you.

  1236. But the reality is

  1237. there is a daily

  1238. temptation for us.

  1239. A daily temptation

  1240. to forget the hope

  1241. that we look forward

  1242. to.

  1243. To forget that God

  1244. is shielding us

  1245. by his power

  1246. and so to compromise

  1247. just to make

  1248. ourselves a little bit

  1249. more comfortable.

  1250. To be not willing

  1251. to admit that maybe

  1252. we believe something

  1253. different to the

  1254. people we work with

  1255. while there's a

  1256. conversation about

  1257. religion.

  1258. To maybe water

  1259. down the gospel

  1260. a little bit for

  1261. those people who

  1262. just it's too far.

  1263. So we say things

  1264. like yeah you can

  1265. follow Jesus

  1266. you're welcome to be

  1267. part of our church

  1268. and call yourself a

  1269. Christian you don't

  1270. have to change

  1271. anything just come to

  1272. church.

  1273. Rather than the

  1274. message that God

  1275. had to die because

  1276. you are so

  1277. ridiculously sinful

  1278. and unworthy

1279. and he has a better

  1280. life for you

  1281. we just water it

  1282. down because that's

  1283. a bit offensive.

  1284. Rather than

  1285. declare the truth

  1286. of the gospel

  1287. that there is only

  1288. one way to heaven

  1289. and that is in

  1290. Jesus Christ

  1291. we say

  1292. whatever you

  1293. believe is fine.

  1294. There is a daily

  1295. temptation for us

1296. to want to fit in

  1297. and make this

  1298. home.

  1299. Temptation to make

  1300. our life decisions

  1301. based on what's

  1302. going to be most

  1303. comfortable right

  1304. now instead of

  1305. on the death

  1306. and resurrection

  1307. of Jesus and the

  1308. eternal home that

  1309. he's prepared for

  1310. us.

  1311. If we start

  1312. living like this

  1313. is home

  1314. there's a good

  1315. chance that we

  1316. will have traded

  1317. our internal

  1318. inheritance for

  1319. this.

  1320. If there's no

  1321. difference between

  1322. us and the world

  1323. that we live in

  1324. that should be a

  1325. reason for concern.

  1326. I was having a

  1327. conversation with a

  1328. man at a funeral

  1329. recently that we had

  1330. here at St. Paul's.

  1331. I'd never met the

  1332. guy just having a

  1333. conversation about

  1334. stories about the

  1335. man who had died.

  1336. The man I was

  1337. talking to was a

  1338. non-Christian and I

  1339. was telling him

  1340. about the hopeful

  1341. grief that our

  1342. church family was

  1343. experiencing and how

  1344. our grief was

  1345. tinged with joy

  1346. because we celebrated

  1347. that this man had

  1348. been welcomed into

  1349. his internal

  1350. inheritance.

  1351. He was now home.

  1352. The man looked at

  1353. me a little confused

  1354. and quickly explained

  1355. that he was an

  1356. atheist and he

  1357. said that in the

  1358. service instead he

  1359. would find comfort in

1360. the past and in the

1361. fact that he knew the

1362. man at all for a few

  1363. years.

  1364. This encounter

  1365. reminded me just how

  1366. differently I see the

  1367. world from those who

  1368. don't know Jesus.

  1369. It reminded me that

  1370. without Jesus the

  1371. fence you have is

  1372. death.

  1373. That's where it ends.

  1374. That's all you've got

1375. and so you must find

  1376. your joy before then.

  1377. But because we know

  1378. Jesus, because he is

  1379. alive, this life is

  1380. just the beginning.

1381. So we do not grieve as

  1382. those who are without

  1383. hope.

1384. There is a finish line

  1385. for us.

1386. There is an end to the

  1387. exile.

1388. There is an end goal.

1389. Our living hope will one

  1390. day be revealed.

1391. One day we won't have

1392. to put up with the

  1393. sickness and the pain.

1394. We'll be face to face

  1395. with Jesus.

  1396. We'll be home.

  1397. It'll be amazing.

  1398. But that doesn't mean

1399. that this life should be

  1400. really sad and somber

  1401. and that God has

1402. reserved all the joy for

  1403. later on.

  1404. Even now we rejoice.

  1405. Verse 6.

1406. In all this you greatly

  1407. rejoice.

1408. Though now for a little

1409. while you may have had to

  1410. suffer grief in all

  1411. kinds of trials.

1412. because of who we are

1413. even where we are we

  1414. greatly rejoice.

  1415. Or verse 8.

  1416. Though you have not

1417. seen him you love him

1418. even though you do not

1419. see him now you believe

1420. in him and are filled

  1421. with an inexpressible

  1422. and glorious joy.

  1423. An inexpressible and

  1424. glorious joy.

1425. For you are receiving the

1426. end result of your faith

  1427. the salvation of your

  1428. souls.

1429. Just let that sit for a

  1430. second.

  1431. Inexpressible and

  1432. glorious joy.

1433. As we reflect on the

  1434. opposition that we face

  1435. in our lives

  1436. that our brothers and

  1437. sisters face around the

1438. world in far more severe

1439. situations than we are in

  1440. all because they're

  1441. followers of Jesus.

  1442. How do you rate

  1443. on the inexpressible and

  1444. glorious joy scale

  1445. personally?

  1446. How do we rate

1447. on that scale as a

  1448. church?

1449. And how do we do it

  1450. better?

  1451. Because the opposition

1452. and the trials are real.

1453. Pain and grief is a right

1454. response to some of the

  1455. things that we're facing

1456. but how do we ensure

  1457. that joy too

1458. is a mark of who we

  1459. are in Jesus?

1460. The keys there in verse

  1461. 8.

  1462. Though you have not

  1463. seen him

  1464. you love him

1465. and even though you do

  1466. not see him now

  1467. you believe in him

1468. and are filled with an

  1469. inexpressible and glorious

  1470. joy for you are

  1471. receiving the end result

  1472. of your faith

  1473. the salvation of your

  1474. souls.

  1475. the joy

  1476. comes from

  1477. him.

  1478. Although we don't

  1479. see Jesus yet

  1480. we believe in him

  1481. and we're filled with

  1482. joy because we're

  1483. receiving the end

  1484. goal

  1485. salvation

  1486. which is just

  1487. another way of

  1488. saying we're

  1489. receiving the end

  1490. goal

  1491. Jesus himself.

  1492. That's where the joy

  1493. is.

1494. The end is when we

  1495. get him fully

  1496. there's no more

  1497. gaps we'll be face

  1498. to face and we'll

  1499. just be overwhelmed

  1500. with a whole

  1501. another level of

  1502. inexpressible and

  1503. glorious joy.

  1504. But right now

1505. as we trust in him

  1506. as we remember

  1507. whose we are

  1508. as we remember

1509. that he sits on the

  1510. throne that death

  1511. is defeated that

  1512. heaven is our home

  1513. we begin to enjoy

  1514. his goodness

  1515. and his presence

  1516. in our lives

  1517. right now

  1518. by his Holy Spirit

  1519. through his comfort

  1520. when we suffer

  1521. through his

  1522. patience and grace

  1523. when we fail

  1524. God is present

  1525. with us in this

  1526. exile

  1527. lifting us out

  1528. of despair

  1529. filling us with

  1530. joy

  1531. in our living

  1532. hope.

  1533. The rest of

  1534. 1 Peter

  1535. which again you can

  1536. read in your own

  1537. time goes on to

  1538. say in light of

  1539. that in light of

  1540. who you are

  1541. in light of where

  1542. you are

  1543. do good

  1544. don't grow weary

  1545. in doing good

  1546. keep doing good

  1547. love your enemy

  1548. entrust yourself to

  1549. God who is the

  1550. real judge

  1551. continue to do

  1552. good

  1553. serve

  1554. declare the

  1555. goodness and

  1556. forgiveness of

  1557. God in the face

  1558. of opposition

  1559. and do it

  1560. filled with the

  1561. joy that comes

  1562. from a living

  1563. hope.

  1564. How do you

  1565. live in a world

  1566. like this

  1567. that may grow

  1568. increasingly hostile

  1569. as the years

  1570. go on?

  1571. remember who

  1572. you are

  1573. you are

  1574. God's

  1575. chosen

  1576. people

  1577. with an

  1578. inheritance that

  1579. will never perish

  1580. spoil or fade

  1581. kept in heaven

  1582. for you

  1583. you are

  1584. shielded by

  1585. God's power

  1586. until the day

  1587. you get to

  1588. enjoy that

  1589. inheritance

  1590. remember where

  1591. you are

  1592. this is not

  1593. home

  1594. always keep

  1595. lifting your

  1596. eyes

  1597. and remember

  1598. where you are

  1599. going

  1600. cultivate that

  1601. holy discontent

  1602. and that longing

  1603. for your heavenly

  1604. home

  1605. my prayer for you

  1606. St. Paul's

  1607. my brothers and

  1608. sisters in the

  1609. faith

  1610. is that as you

  1611. joyfully

  1612. and boldly

  1613. live out the

  1614. hope of the

  1615. gospel

  1616. that the

  1617. God of all

  1618. grace

  1619. who called

  1620. you to his

  1621. eternal glory

  1622. in Christ

  1623. after you

  1624. have suffered

  1625. a little while

  1626. will himself

  1627. respond to you

  1628. and make you

  1629. strong

  1630. firm

  1631. and steadfast

  1632. to him be the

  1633. power

  1634. forever

  1635. and ever

  1636. amen

  1637. that

  1638. and
