  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Whoa, nice and loud.

  3. It's great to see you in the new year.

  4. And one of the things that I asked on Facebook,

  5. I'm sure some of you are my Facebook friends.

  6. I'm happy to add you if you're not.

  7. But one of the questions I asked on Friday is,

  8. what do people fear?

  9. And some people commented on my wall.

  10. And I got a few responses.

  11. Basically, there are a few types of things that people fear.

  12. Some fears basically have no basis for these fears.

  13. Some people fear that we might lose the ashes.

  14. It's not going to happen.

  15. And some people, but there are some more serious fears.

  16. The word fear can mean frightened.

  17. So some of the things that people fear are natural disasters like cyclones

  18. or something that's man-made or caused by people like terrorism and wars.

  19. But fear can also mean worry and anxieties.

  20. And that type of fear is actually even worse for us

  21. because if you're frightened of something,

  22. if you have a spider, you just get shocked.

  23. But if there's an anxiety, it gnaws at you.

  24. This thing keeps you thinking at night.

  25. And there's even a new acronym that has come out.

  26. F-O-M-O.

  27. I'm not sure how to pronounce it because I'm getting old now.

  28. Is it FOMO?

  29. I'm not sure.

  30. It is.

  31. Good.

  32. So what does that stand for?

  33. Fear of missing out.

  34. That's right.

  35. This is something that people...

  36. If you don't know what that means, you can look it up on Wikipedia.

  37. I did as well.

  38. So it came up in 2004.

  39. It originally meant that people,

  40. when they see what's happening on Facebook or other social media sites,

  41. they fear that they're missing out on something.

  42. But I think this is something that's true of all of us.

  43. This is the society that we live in.

  44. In fact, this is the fear that consumes us.

  45. This is the fear that we have at the start of the creation.

  46. The serpent said,

  47. don't you want to taste this fruit of good and evil?

  48. Basically asking us,

  49. you might miss out on that.

  50. And this is true of all stages of life.

  51. In our youth,

  52. we might just think that we might...

  53. If we don't do the things that our friends do,

  54. we are missing out.

  55. If you are single,

  56. you might see that you might miss out on a relationship.

  57. So you might date a non-Christian or drift into pornography.

  58. And if you are working,

  59. you might see that you don't get to tick off your bucket list.

  60. I want to go to these places.

  61. I want to travel.

  62. I want to have all these experiences.

  63. I want to go to that restaurant.

  64. At work,

  65. we might plow in many countless hours

  66. because we fear that we don't get a promotion.

  67. When colleagues participate in office politics,

  68. we might fear that we don't get a promotion

  69. because we are not hanging in the right circles

  70. or saying different things to get ahead.

  71. Once you are married,

  72. you might fear that your kids might miss out.

  73. Therefore,

  74. you try to give them the best start in life possible.

  75. Enroll them in different classes

  76. or just swimming classes

  77. or different types of tutoring.

  78. Or you might want them to hang around different friends

  79. or buy them the best things

  80. so that they do not miss out.

  81. And I've seen people that grow older.

  82. One of the things that people of my parents' generation,

  83. they keep saying to us is that,

  84. I want to do this for you and buy this for you

  85. because I don't want you to miss out.

  86. They fear that we will miss out.

  87. If you think about it,

  88. all these fears are just

  89. different manifestations of selfish fears

  90. that drive us to hoard our money

  91. and our time

  92. to spend it on ourselves and our loved ones.

  93. So you can see that today,

  94. the things that we fear

  95. might be very different

  96. from what is seen in Psalm 46.

  97. So the original title under the psalm,

  98. so when you read the psalm,

  99. there are little letters just below Psalm 46.

  100. Those titles tell us

  101. who is this psalm used for

  102. and what is the situation.

  103. Unfortunately, in this psalm,

  104. they don't tell us,

  105. the writer did not tell us

  106. when these events happened.

  107. But we can read,

  108. if you read through the psalm,

  109. you will have noticed that

  110. it is about God rescuing them.

  111. And there are many instances

  112. in the Bible where

  113. Israel or Judah

  114. is surrounded by enemies.

  115. And one of the passages

  116. that fits in this sort of

  117. description and context

  118. is Psalm 2 Kings

    2 Kings 18 chapter mention

  119. chapters 18 to 19.

  120. So what I'm going to do today

  121. is do something a little bit different.

  122. I'm going to read

  123. this psalm alongside

  124. with 2 Kings 18 to 19.

  125. So that's like a little

  126. backstory and illustration

  127. to this psalm.

  128. So we can actually feel

  129. what it means

  130. to be under siege

  131. and be attacked.

  132. So,

  133. the only things that,

  134. if you look at the psalm,

  135. like any good sermon,

  136. it's in three sections,

  137. so it makes it easy for me.

  138. There are three sections

  139. in this psalm.

  140. Verses 1 to 3,

  141. God is present

  142. to calm his people.

  143. Second section is

  144. verses 4 to 7,

  145. God is present

  146. to comfort his city.

  147. The third section is

  148. verses 8 to 11,

  149. God is present

  150. to control the nations.

  151. So,

  152. let's look at

  153. the first section,

  154. which is,

  155. God is present

  156. to calm his people.

  157. So,

  158. I want to set the scene

  159. for this psalm,

  160. so you can probably

  161. read through the psalm.

  162. The psalm is crying

  163. to God

  164. as their strength

  165. and refuge.

  166. And one of the things,

  167. if you read 2 Kings

    2 Kings 18 chapter mention

  168. chapters 18 to 19,

  169. you can see that

  170. that's a situation

  171. that God's people

  172. needed rescuing from.

  173. They were under siege.

  174. And I haven't been

  175. under siege,

  176. which is great.

  177. But I like watching movies

  178. with sieges in it,

  179. especially like

  180. the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

  181. Those siege scenes

  182. are awesome.

  183. And siege scenes

  184. are always great

  185. because you know that

  186. there's a lot of pressure

  187. built up

  188. and there are always

  189. heroic armies

  190. marching out.

  191. And you know that

  192. the people under siege,

  193. they tend to escape,

  194. which is always

  195. a good ending,

  196. a happy ending.

  197. But in reality,

  198. sieges are actually

  199. very scary.

  200. Sieges are

  201. a horrible way

  202. to conquer a city

  203. for those that are

  204. under siege.

  205. They might die

  206. of disease

  207. and starvation.

  208. And usually,

  209. it doesn't end well,

  210. unlike most movies.

  211. And the situation

  212. described in 2 Kings

  213. is especially

  214. terrifying.

  215. So let's do some math

  216. to help us understand

  217. why it is terrifying.

  218. We have to do,

  219. fast forward to

  220. 2 Kings

    2 Kings 19:35

  221. chapter 19,

  222. verse 35.

  223. We know that

  224. the Assyrian army

  225. had at least

  226. 185,000 people

  227. because that's how many

  228. got

  229. slaughtered

  230. at the end of the story.

  231. And

  232. in the middle,

  233. when

  234. the king of Assyria

  235. taunted

  236. Hezekiah,

  237. he implied that

  238. Jerusalem didn't even

  239. have 2,000 men

  240. to be mounted warriors

  241. to meet this army.

  242. So you can think

  243. of it as the math,

  244. 185,000

  245. to 2,000.

  246. That's 92 to 1.

  247. These are not good odds.

  248. Humanly speaking,

  249. there's no way

  250. for them to survive.

  251. Let's trace the story

  252. back to the beginning

  253. in 2 Kings.

  254. So if you have the Bible,

  255. turn to 2 Kings

    2 Kings 18 chapter mention

  256. chapter 18.

  257. If not,

  258. you can just follow

  259. this story along with me.

  260. So in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 18:13

  261. chapter 18,

  262. verse 13

  263. onwards,

  264. we can see that

  265. the Assyrians

  266. is a very

  267. large and cruel army

  268. coming from the north.

  269. They've come,

  270. destroyed

  271. all the other nations,

  272. and they're now

  273. coming up to Judah.

  274. Hezekiah

  275. is the king

  276. of Judah

  277. and Jerusalem.

  278. he is scared

  279. of the Assyrians,

  280. so he tried

  281. to appease

  282. this king

  283. by giving him

  284. a tribute.

  285. He basically

  286. tried to find

  287. all the gold

  288. and all the wealth

  289. that he can find,

  290. even by scraping off

  291. all the gold

  292. from the temple

  293. and giving it

  294. to the king

  295. of Assyria,

  296. Sennacherib,

  297. as a tribute.

  298. He thought

  299. that that might

  300. appease the king,

  301. but instead

  302. of appeasing

  303. the king,

  304. the king

  305. of Assyria,

  306. Sennacherib,

  307. taunted Judah,

  308. taunted them

  309. for the fact

  310. that they tried

  311. to rely

  312. on Egypt

  313. and taunted

  314. them,

  315. taunted

  316. Judah's god.

  317. We can see

  318. this taunt

  319. in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 18:19–23

  320. chapter 18,

  321. verses 19 to 23.

  322. I'll read that now.

  323. On what do you

  324. rest this trust

  325. of yours?

  326. Do you think

  327. that mere words

  328. are strategy

  329. and power

  330. for war?

  331. In whom

  332. do you now trust

  333. that you have

  334. rebelled against me?

  335. Behold,

  336. you are trusting

  337. now in Egypt,

  338. that broken reed

  339. of a staff,

  340. which will appease

  341. the hand of any man

  342. who leans on it.

  343. Such is Pharaoh,

  344. king of Egypt,

  345. to all who trust

  346. in him.

  347. But if you say

  348. to me,

  349. we have removed,

  350. we trust

  351. in the Lord

  352. our God,

  353. is it not

  354. he whose

  355. high places

  356. and altars

  357. Hezekiah

  358. has removed,

  359. saying to Judah

  360. and to Jerusalem,

  361. you shall worship

  362. before this altar

  363. in Jerusalem.

  364. Come now,

  365. make a wager

  366. with me,

  367. my master,

  368. the king of Assyria.

  369. I will give you

  370. 2,000 horses

  371. if you are able

  372. to,

  373. on your part,

  374. set riders

  375. on them.

  376. So you can see

  377. in this taunt,

  378. he's saying

  379. that there's no way

  380. for Israel,

  381. for Jerusalem

  382. to survive.

  383. With this background,

  384. and we know

  385. the end of the story

  386. that God

  387. rescued Jerusalem,

  388. we can actually

  389. understand why

  390. the psalmist

  391. was so glad

  392. to sing

  393. that God

  394. is our refuge,

  395. our very present

  396. help in trouble

  397. in verse 1.

  398. Judah needed

  399. a place to hide,

  400. and although

  401. they were tempted

  402. to buy off

  403. their enemies

  404. and rely on Egypt,

  405. at the end

  406. they realized

  407. that,

  408. Hezekiah realized

  409. that the only

  410. place to hide

  411. is God.

  412. What's more,

  413. they needed

  414. to be delivered

  415. soon,

  416. because they

  417. were besieged.

  418. We will trace

  419. the story back

  420. a little bit later

  421. to see how close

  422. they were

  423. to destruction.

  424. That's why

  425. the psalmist

  426. prayed that

  427. it's a very

  428. present help

  429. in trouble.

  430. God helped

  431. them just

  432. at the right

  433. time when

  434. they needed

  435. help.

  436. You can

  437. actually,

  438. remembering

  439. the odds,

  440. the overwhelming

  441. odds that they

  442. have,

  443. 92 to 1

  444. man,

  445. 185,000

  446. army to

  447. 2,000,

  448. is a miraculous

  449. salvation.

  450. That's why

  451. the psalmist

  452. kept singing

  453. in verses 2

  454. and 3,

  455. that though

  456. we will not

  457. fear,

  458. though the

  459. earth gives

  460. way,

  461. though the

  462. mountains be

  463. moved in

  464. the heart

  465. of the sea,

  466. though the

  467. waters roam

  468. and fall,

  469. raw and foam,

  470. though the

  471. mountains tremble

  472. at its

  473. swelling.

  474. What is

  475. mentioned

  476. here are

  477. all the

  478. terrifying

  479. natural

  480. disasters,

  481. like

  482. earthquakes

  483. and the

  484. sea.

  485. And if

  486. you know

  487. the Bible

  488. in the

  489. Old Testament,

  490. the Jews

  491. are scared,

  492. absolutely

  493. terrified of

  494. the sea.

  495. At the

  496. beginning of

  497. creation,

  498. darkness

  499. and the

  500. sea is

  501. a total

  502. chaos.

  503. So

  504. they are

  505. scared of

  506. the sea

  507. and they're

  508. scared of

  509. all these

  510. natural

  511. disasters.

  512. So what

  513. is mentioned

  514. here is

  515. total chaos

  516. destruction.

  517. And the

  518. psalmist is

  519. saying that

  520. even in

  521. this

  522. environment,

  523. they are

  524. not going

  525. to fear.

  526. They will

  527. not be

  528. moved.

  529. So we

  530. can actually

  531. see how

  532. God has

  533. rescued them.

  534. We can

  535. actually move

  536. from the

  537. second section

  538. of verses

  539. four to

  540. seven.

  541. We can

  542. summarize how

  543. God is

  544. present to

  545. comfort his

  546. city.

  547. So let's

  548. pick up the

  549. story of the

  550. siege of

  551. Israel in

  552. 2 Kings.

  553. So you've

  554. got an

  555. army approaching

  556. the city of

  557. Jerusalem.

  558. And Jerusalem,

  559. if you know

  560. the geography

  561. around it,

  562. God has

  563. actually given

  564. them little

  565. fortresses and

  566. little small

  567. cities,

  568. satellite cities

  569. around Jerusalem.

  570. And one of

  571. these cities is

  572. called Lipna.

  573. And you can

  574. see that story

  575. in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 19 chapter mention

  576. chapter 19.

  577. The Assyrian

  578. army moved

  579. closer to

  580. the city of

  581. Jerusalem and

  582. attacked Lipna.

  583. And they

  584. did it

  585. throughout the

  586. day.

  587. And because

  588. it took a

  589. while, they

  590. needed to

  591. take a break

  592. in the

  593. afternoon.

  594. And the

  595. Assyrians

  596. sent another

  597. taunt to

  598. Hezekiah and

  599. Jerusalem.

  600. Now he's

  601. taunting God

  602. directly,

  603. taunting how

  604. has the

  605. Lord helped

  606. you?

  607. He's not

  608. going to

  609. rescue you.

  610. So in

  611. this situation,

  612. we can see

  613. that Hezekiah

  614. really needed

  615. to rely on

  616. God.

  617. So we can

  618. actually see

  619. how he

  620. prayed in

  621. chapter 19

  622. verses 15

  623. to 19.

  624. I'll read

  625. from verse 15.

  626. Listen to the

  627. words Sennacherib

  628. has sent to

  629. ridicule the

  630. living God.

  631. It is true,

  632. Lord, that

  633. the Assyrian

  634. kings have

  635. laid waste

  636. these nations

  637. and their

  638. lands.

  639. They have

  640. thrown their

  641. gods into

  642. the fire and

  643. destroyed them.

  644. For they

  645. were not gods

  646. but only wood

  647. and stone,

  648. fashioned by

  649. human hands.

  650. Now, Lord,

  651. our God,

  652. deliver us from

  653. His hand,

  654. such as all the

  655. kingdoms of the

  656. earth.

  657. May I know

  658. that you alone,

  659. Lord, is our

  660. God.

  661. Notice that

  662. in this prayer,

  663. Hezekiah isn't

  664. centred on the

  665. need for

  666. rescuing.

  667. If I was the

  668. king in this

  669. situation, I

  670. would have just

  671. prayed, God,

  672. please help us.

  673. There's a big

  674. army outside.

  675. Please destroy

  676. the Assyrians.

  677. But Hezekiah

  678. didn't pray that.

  679. He appealed to

  680. who God is,

  681. the Lord.

  682. The Lord is

  683. the name Yahweh

  684. for God in the

  685. Old Testament.

  686. He appealed to

  687. God being the

  688. one that is

  689. different.

  690. He is above

  691. all the other

  692. nations.

  693. Notice that he

  694. describes the

  695. Lord in verse

  696. 15 as

  697. enthroned between

  698. the cherubims.

  699. The cherubims are

  700. two little angels

  701. in the temple.

  702. It's representing

  703. that God is in

  704. the temple in

  705. Jerusalem.

  706. It's describing

  707. how God is

  708. present above

  709. the Ark of the

  710. Covenant.

  711. Therefore, we

  712. can see that

  713. Hezekiah is

  714. appealing,

  715. for God to

  716. save Jerusalem,

  717. not because

  718. it needed

  719. rescuing,

  720. but because of

  721. His name and

  722. His place,

  723. Jerusalem,

  724. where He dwells

  725. in the temple.

  726. This is why

  727. in verse 4 of

  728. Psalm 46,

  729. we can see that

  730. the psalmist is

  731. saying that

  732. there's a river

  733. that flows

  734. and that makes

  735. glad the city of

  736. God.

  737. This is where

  738. the Most High

  739. dwells.

  740. God dwells in

  741. Jerusalem in

  742. Jerusalem in the

  743. temple.

  744. And you can

  745. actually see the

  746. contrast between

  747. the total chaos

  748. outside being

  749. besieged and

  750. how they felt

  751. inside because

  752. God is with

  753. them.

  754. So we are

  755. reminded of

  756. earthquake and

  757. chaos and

  758. destruction outside,

  759. but the picture

  760. inside is that

  761. God is in the

  762. midst of her.

  763. She will not be

  764. moved.

  765. And God will

  766. help her when

  767. the morning

  768. dawns.

  769. And these

  770. are amazing

  771. words,

  772. considering

  773. they were

  774. besieged

  775. overnight and

  776. they are

  777. awaiting their

  778. fate the next

  779. morning.

  780. And we can

  781. actually see what

  782. happened that

  783. night when

  784. Hezekiah prayed

  785. in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 19:35

  786. chapter 19,

  787. verse 35.

  788. That night the

  789. angel of the

  790. Lord went out

  791. and put to

  792. death 185,000

  793. in the Assyrian

  794. camp.

  795. When the people

  796. got up the

  797. next morning,

  798. they were all

  799. dead bodies.

  800. So God's

  801. angel is God's

  802. means of

  803. destroying the

  804. Assyrian armies.

  805. This is why in

  806. verses 7 and

  807. 11, the

  808. psalmist can

  809. sing,

  810. The Lord of

  811. hosts is with

  812. us.

  813. The God of

  814. Jacob is our

  815. fortress.

  816. The phrase,

  817. the Lord of

  818. hosts, or the

  819. Lord Almighty,

  820. depending on

  821. which translation

  822. you use, is

  823. describing God

  824. as the warrior

  825. king over his

  826. angelic armies.

  827. So let's step

  828. back.

  829. We use the

  830. siege as an

  831. illustration of

  832. Psalm 46.

  833. We think about

  834. what happens in

  835. this siege, and

  836. indeed some of

  837. the sieges in

  838. the rest of the

  839. Old Testament.

  840. We can see that

  841. usually human

  842. means does not

  843. work.

  844. In this instance,

  845. nothing that

  846. Hezekiah did,

  847. whether it's

  848. paying a tribute

  849. to Assyria,

  850. forming an

  851. alliance with

  852. Egypt, that

  853. didn't work.

  854. Hezekiah didn't

  855. even send an

  856. army out to

  857. meet the

  858. Assyrians.

  859. God's army

  860. destroyed the

  861. Assyrians before

  862. they did

  863. anything the

  864. next morning.

  865. This is why

  866. God alone is

  867. a strength and

  868. refuge.

  869. The third

  870. section of

  871. the psalm is

  872. verses 8 to

  873. 11.

  874. We can see

  875. how here God

  876. is present to

  877. control the

  878. nations and

  879. what he asks

  880. of us in

  881. response.

  882. So if you

  883. think about

  884. an ancient

  885. battle, when

  886. a country

  887. wins, it

  888. doesn't affect

  889. just the

  890. relationship

  891. between these

  892. two countries.

  893. When a victory

  894. is achieved,

  895. all the other

  896. nations around

  897. them are going

  898. to hear of

  899. it.

  900. So this is

  901. what happens

  902. in verses

  903. 8 to 11

  904. of the

  905. psalm.

  906. Notice that

  907. there's a

  908. difference between

  909. the tone

  910. between verses

  911. 1 to 7

  912. and 8 to

  913. 11.

  914. So in

  915. verses 1 to

  916. 7, we

  917. can hear how

  918. the psalmist

  919. described how

  920. God saved

  921. his people.

  922. But in

  923. verses 8 to

  924. 11, there

  925. are two

  926. instructions for

  927. the people of

  928. Jerusalem, or

  929. the readers of

  930. the psalm.

  931. In verse 8,

  932. the instruction

  933. is for them

  934. to come.

  935. Come to see

  936. what the Lord

  937. has done.

  938. Come to see

  939. how the Lord

  940. has destroyed

  941. his enemies.

  942. It's important

  943. to see how

  944. God do

  945. things differently.

  946. Whereas Hezekiah

  947. is trying to

  948. use alliances

  949. to appease

  950. and to

  951. strategize,

  952. God alone

  953. is the king.

  954. He alone

  955. can crush

  956. everyone else.

  957. He can use

  958. his own means

  959. to do

  960. everything.

  961. But the

  962. thing is,

  963. his destruction

  964. is fair.

  965. Some people

  966. might ask

  967. whether it's

  968. cruel for

  969. God to

  970. be the

  971. Lord of

  972. everyone,

  973. and to

  974. shatter the

  975. spears,

  976. and to

  977. destroy other

  978. enemies.

  979. In this

  980. instance,

  981. we can see

  982. that the

  983. Assyrian king

  984. taunted

  985. the Lord

  986. and his

  987. people.

  988. But in

  989. fact,

  990. if you look

  991. at the

  992. context of

  993. the psalm,

  994. in Psalm 2,

  995. that is true

  996. for all

  997. peoples and

  998. all kings.

  999. Because all

  1000. nations have

  1001. conspired to

  1002. go against

  1003. the Lord.

  1004. And it's

  1005. fair for

  1006. God to

  1007. judge

  1008. everyone

  1009. and anyone

  1010. that

  1011. taunts and

  1012. defies God.

  1013. And it's

  1014. actually important

  1015. for the people

  1016. of Judah to

  1017. recognize that

  1018. God is fair

  1019. in judgment.

  1020. And the

  1021. psalmists tell

  1022. them,

  1023. come and look

  1024. at the work

  1025. of the Lord.

  1026. The Lord is

  1027. able to

  1028. destroy his

  1029. enemies.

  1030. You need to

  1031. see the work

  1032. of the Lord

  1033. to see how

  1034. powerful he

  1035. is.

  1036. The second

  1037. instruction

  1038. given to

  1039. the reader

  1040. is to

  1041. cease

  1042. striving.

  1043. This is

  1044. found in

  1045. verse 10.

  1046. They need

  1047. to stop

  1048. using their

  1049. own means

  1050. to plot

  1051. and strategize,

  1052. but instead

  1053. come to

  1054. know that

  1055. they need

  1056. to know

  1057. God.

  1058. So I've

  1059. quickly looked

  1060. through what

  1061. the psalm

  1062. means.

  1063. Let's look

  1064. through what

  1065. it means

  1066. for us.

  1067. So one

  1068. of the

  1069. ways to

  1070. work out

  1071. what it

  1072. means for

  1073. us is

  1074. to work

  1075. out what

  1076. it doesn't

  1077. mean.

  1078. So I

  1079. want to

  1080. quickly step

  1081. through what

  1082. it doesn't

  1083. mean for

  1084. us before

  1085. we work

  1086. out what

  1087. it does

  1088. mean for

  1089. us.

  1090. Firstly,

  1091. right now,

  1092. no nation

  1093. on earth

  1094. can claim

  1095. that they

  1096. are God's

  1097. nation and

  1098. can claim

  1099. that God

  1100. is fighting

  1101. on behalf

  1102. of them.

  1103. We can't

  1104. transfer what

  1105. is said

  1106. to Israel

  1107. or Judah

  1108. or the

  1109. people of

  1110. God in

  1111. the Old

  1112. Testament

  1113. to us

  1114. right now

  1115. because

  1116. no nation

  1117. on earth

  1118. are God's

  1119. chosen

  1120. nation,

  1121. no earthly

  1122. nation.

  1123. And that's

  1124. important because

  1125. we don't want

  1126. to use the

  1127. Bible to

  1128. unjustly

  1129. justify

  1130. religious

  1131. wars.

  1132. Secondly,

  1133. God's holy

  1134. city promise

  1135. right now

  1136. is not

  1137. the earthly

  1138. Jerusalem.

  1139. If you

  1140. look at

  1141. on Google

  1142. Maps

  1143. on Jerusalem,

  1144. if you look

  1145. at the city

  1146. and look

  1147. at the

  1148. rivers,

  1149. there's

  1150. actually no

  1151. river flowing

  1152. through

  1153. Jerusalem

  1154. right now.

  1155. In the

  1156. middle section

  1157. of the

  1158. psalm,

  1159. even in

  1160. Hezekiah's

  1161. time,

  1162. there's a

  1163. river flowing

  1164. through

  1165. Jerusalem,

  1166. but it's

  1167. something that

  1168. Hezekiah

  1169. dug underneath

  1170. to supply the

  1171. city with

  1172. water.

  1173. So that's

  1174. probably not

  1175. the promised

  1176. city that we

  1177. are looking

  1178. forward to.

  1179. We are

  1180. looking forward

  1181. to a heavenly

  1182. Jerusalem.

  1183. Jerusalem.

  1184. Certainly,

  1185. this psalm is

  1186. not saying

  1187. that God

  1188. is like a

  1189. magic genie

  1190. in a lamp.

  1191. If we need

  1192. help,

  1193. just pray

  1194. and rub

  1195. the lamp.

  1196. He is our

  1197. present help

  1198. in trouble.

  1199. We will

  1200. solve any

  1201. trouble that

  1202. we have.

  1203. So we

  1204. have to

  1205. work out

  1206. what this

  1207. means for

  1208. us right

  1209. now.

  1210. The

  1211. instructions

  1212. given to

  1213. the people

  1214. of God

  1215. in the

  1216. Old

  1217. Testament

  1218. is also

  1219. true for

  1220. us.

  1221. We are

  1222. to also

  1223. see,

  1224. come to

  1225. see the

  1226. work of

  1227. the Lord.

  1228. The natural

  1229. question for

  1230. us is,

  1231. we are

  1232. not Jews.

  1233. How can

  1234. we come

  1235. to see the

  1236. work of

  1237. the Lord

  1238. and be

  1239. happy about

  1240. that?

  1241. We need

  1242. to understand

  1243. now,

  1244. it's not

  1245. the Jews

  1246. that are

  1247. the people

  1248. of God.

  1249. It's those

  1250. that trust

  1251. in Jesus.

  1252. And on

  1253. the flip

  1254. side,

  1255. it's those

  1256. that defy

  1257. Jesus that

  1258. face a

  1259. similar

  1260. judgment

  1261. to the

  1262. Assyrians.

  1263. We can

  1264. see that

  1265. in the

  1266. New Testament

  1267. Thessalonians

  1268. chapter 1

  1269. verses 6

  1270. to 8,

  1271. God

  1272. considers it

  1273. just to

  1274. repay

  1275. affliction

  1276. those who

  1277. afflict you

  1278. and to

  1279. grant relief

  1280. to you

  1281. who are

  1282. afflicted

  1283. as well

  1284. as to

  1285. us.

  1286. And the

  1287. Lord Jesus

  1288. is revealed

  1289. from heaven

  1290. with his

  1291. mighty angels

  1292. in flaming

  1293. fire,

  1294. inflicting

  1295. vengeance on

  1296. those who

  1297. do not

  1298. know God

  1299. and on

  1300. those who

  1301. do not

  1302. obey the

  1303. gospel of

  1304. Lord Jesus.

  1305. We don't

  1306. often celebrate

  1307. the fact or

  1308. actively tell

  1309. people to

  1310. look at

  1311. God's

  1312. judgment.

  1313. But in

  1314. some situations

  1315. this is

  1316. exactly what

  1317. is needed

  1318. to comfort

  1319. those people.

  1320. You don't

  1321. have to cast

  1322. your mind

  1323. far back

  1324. in the news

  1325. to see how

  1326. that is

  1327. going to be

  1328. of comfort

  1329. to some

  1330. people.

  1331. Just a

  1332. couple of

  1333. weeks ago

  1334. you would

  1335. have probably

  1336. heard in

  1337. the news

  1338. that a

  1339. few Christians

  1340. in Tyrol

  1341. was killed

  1342. during the

  1343. Christmas

  1344. period

  1345. inside the

  1346. church.

  1347. Under that

  1348. sort of

  1349. religious

  1350. persecution

  1351. Christians

  1352. will be

  1353. comforted

  1354. by the

  1355. fact that

  1356. God is

  1357. going to

  1358. repay

  1359. those that

  1360. will afflict

  1361. them.

  1362. The second

  1363. instruction

  1364. is in

  1365. Psalm 46

    Psalms 46:10

  1366. verse 10.

  1367. the

  1368. psalmist

  1369. is telling

  1370. God's

  1371. people

  1372. to

  1373. seize

  1374. and

  1375. know

  1376. the

  1377. creator.

  1378. The

  1379. word to

  1380. seize

  1381. driving

  1382. doesn't

  1383. mean to

  1384. stop

  1385. trying,

  1386. drop

  1387. everything

  1388. and

  1389. just

  1390. let

  1391. God

  1392. do

  1393. everything.

  1394. The

  1395. instruction

  1396. to

  1397. seize

  1398. driving

  1399. is to

  1400. seize

  1401. driving

  1402. and to

  1403. know

  1404. God

  1405. our

  1406. creator.

  1407. and I

  1408. want you

  1409. to cast

  1410. our

  1411. mind

  1412. back

  1413. to

  1414. the

  1415. examples

  1416. I've

  1417. given

  1418. about

  1419. fears

  1420. in

  1421. particular

  1422. some

  1423. of our

  1424. worries

  1425. and

  1426. anxieties

  1427. in our

  1428. life.

  1429. A lot

  1430. of our

  1431. striving

  1432. is not

  1433. about

  1434. God

  1435. and we

  1436. actually

  1437. need to

  1438. know

  1439. in here

  1440. the

  1441. important

  1442. thing

  1443. is

  1444. not

  1445. for

  1446. God

  1447. come

  1448. to

  1449. God

  1450. to

  1451. solve

  1452. our

  1453. problems.

  1454. The

  1455. instruction

  1456. is to

  1457. seize

  1458. driving

  1459. and

  1460. know

  1461. our

  1462. creator.

  1463. We

  1464. need to

  1465. know

  1466. God

  1467. not

  1468. for

  1469. the

  1470. relief

  1471. that

  1472. he

  1473. gives

  1474. but

  1475. for

  1476. the

  1477. God

  1478. that

  1479. he

  1480. is.

  1481. Remember

  1482. the

  1483. illustration

  1484. I gave

  1485. at the

  1486. start

  1487. FOMO

  1488. FOMO

  1489. if we

  1490. try to

  1491. obtain

  1492. everything

  1493. in our

  1494. life

  1495. so we

  1496. don't

  1497. miss out

  1498. on

  1499. anything

  1500. in our

  1501. life

  1502. that

  1503. is

  1504. one

  1505. form

  1506. of

  1507. striving

  1508. we

  1509. are

  1510. strategizing

  1511. to

  1512. provide

  1513. for

  1514. ourselves

  1515. and not

  1516. trust

  1517. in our

  1518. God.

  1519. It's

  1520. a

  1521. lifestyle

  1522. that

  1523. denies

  1524. that

  1525. Jesus

  1526. is

  1527. Lord

  1528. and

  1529. the

  1530. most

  1531. important

  1532. thing

  1533. in our

  1534. life

  1535. and

  1536. it

  1537. doesn't

  1538. take

  1539. into

  1540. the

  1541. fact

  1542. that

  1543. our

  1544. city

  1545. is

  1546. the

  1547. city

  1548. of

  1549. Jerusalem

  1550. in

  1551. heaven.

  1552. Heaven

  1553. is what

  1554. we

  1555. need

  1556. not

  1557. the

  1558. earthly

  1559. things

  1560. that

  1561. we

  1562. have

  1563. right

  1564. now.

  1565. If

  1566. we

  1567. know

  1568. that

  1569. heaven

  1570. is

  1571. our

  1572. home

  1573. we

  1574. don't

  1575. have

  1576. to

  1577. fear

  1578. that

  1579. we

  1580. will

  1581. miss

  1582. out

  1583. on

  1584. anything

  1585. on

  1586. earth.

  1587. So

  1588. at

  1589. the

  1590. which

  1591. area

  1592. are

  1593. we

  1594. striving

  1595. to

  1596. be

  1597. secure

  1598. in

  1599. ourselves

  1600. secure

  1601. in

  1602. our

  1603. earthly

  1604. competencies

  1605. and

  1606. pleasures

  1607. rather

  1608. than

  1609. to

  1610. live

  1611. for

  1612. God.

  1613. So

  1614. we're

  1615. going to

  1616. explore

  1617. that

  1618. a

  1619. little

  1620. more

  1621. next

  1622. week.

  1623. We

  1624. need

  1625. to

  1626. work

  1627. out

  1628. how

  1629. to

  1630. strive

  1631. for

  1632. God

  1633. and

  1634. the

  1635. sermon

  1636. next

  1637. week

  1638. might

  1639. touch

  1640. on

  1641. that

  1642. a

  1643. little

  1644. bit

  1645. more.

  1646. But

  1647. just

  1648. as

  1649. we

  1650. have

  1651. at

  1652. the

  1653. start

  1654. of

  1655. the

  1656. year

  1657. we

  1658. need

  1659. to

  1660. take

  1661. stock

  1662. to

  1663. come

  1664. to

  1665. know

  1666. God

  1667. and

  1668. come

  1669. for

  1670. us

  1671. to

  1672. strive

  1673. to

  1674. save

  1675. ourselves.

  1676. I

  1677. want

  1678. you

  1679. to

  1680. join

  1681. in

  1682. the

  1683. work

  1684. of

  1685. telling

  1686. others

  1687. how

  1688. they

  1689. can

  1690. come

  1691. to

  1692. know

  1693. God

  1694. and

  1695. see

  1696. striving.

  1697. I

  1698. want

  1699. to

  1700. actually

  1701. tell

  1702. you

  1703. a

  1704. story

  1705. of

  1706. someone

  1707. that

  1708. I

  1709. met

  1710. last

  1711. year.

  1712. Her

  1713. name

  1714. is

  1715. Rose.

  1716. And

  1717. she

  1718. is

  1719. a

  1720. lady

  1721. although

  1722. she

  1723. doesn't

  1724. know

  1725. God

  1726. yet,

  1727. she

  1728. is

  1729. trying

  1730. to

  1731. work

  1732. out

  1733. how

  1734. to

  1735. know

  1736. God

  1737. and

  1738. see

  1739. striving

  1740. for

  1741. herself.

  1742. I

  1743. will

  1744. tell

  1745. you

  1746. a

  1747. little

  1748. bit

  1749. of

  1750. the

  1751. story.

  1752. Rose

  1753. is

  1754. a

  1755. typical

  1756. lady

  1757. that

  1758. goes

  1759. to

  1760. ESL

  1761. right

  1762. now.

  1763. They

  1764. are

  1765. quite

  1766. a

  1767. group

  1768. of

  1769. people

  1770. right

  1771. now

  1772. that

  1773. go

  1774. to

  1775. ESL.

  1776. They

  1777. accompany

  1778. their

  1779. children.

  1780. So

  1781. their

  1782. children

  1783. studies

  1784. in

  1785. Australia

  1786. and

  1787. because

  1788. the

  1789. parents

  1790. are

  1791. scared

  1792. they

  1793. want

  1794. to

  1795. be

  1796. with

  1797. the

  1798. children.

  1799. They

  1800. want

  1801. to

  1802. look

  1803. after

  1804. the

  1805. children.

  1806. And

  1807. Rose

  1808. is

  1809. one

  1810. such

  1811. lady.

  1812. So

  1813. she

  1814. wants

  1815. to

  1816. look

  1817. after

  1818. her

  1819. child

  1820. here.

  1821. And

  1822. at

  1823. the

  1824. same

  1825. time

  1826. she

  1827. is

  1828. separated

  1829. from

  1830. her

  1831. husband

  1832. because

  1833. not

  1834. legally

  1835. separated

  1836. but

  1837. just

  1838. because

  1839. she

  1840. has

  1841. to

  1842. be

  1843. here

  1844. to

  1845. look

  1846. after

  1847. her

  1848. child.

  1849. And

  1850. she

  1851. worries

  1852. about

  1853. a lot

  1854. of

  1855. things

  1856. back

  1857. in

  1858. China.

  1859. She

  1860. has

  1861. ageing

  1862. and

  1863. sick

  1864. relatives

  1865. that

  1866. she

  1867. needs

  1868. to

  1869. take

  1870. care

  1871. of.

  1872. And

  1873. she

  1874. is

  1875. trying

  1876. to

  1877. strive

  1878. to

  1879. plan

  1880. life

  1881. both

  1882. in

  1883. Australia

  1884. and

  1885. in

  1886. China

  1887. to

  1888. work

  1889. out

  1890. how

  1891. to

  1892. make

  1893. the

  1894. best

  1895. of

  1896. everything.

  1897. So

  1898. we

  1899. rose

  1900. along

  1901. with

  1902. a few

  1903. other

  1904. people

  1905. from

  1906. ESL.

  1907. We

  1908. did

  1909. a

  1910. Bible

  1911. study

  1912. on

  1913. Friday

  1914. night

  1915. because

  1916. Friday

  1917. night

  1918. is

  1919. a

  1920. great

  1921. time

  1922. for

  1923. Bible

  1924. study

  1925. for

  1926. these

  1927. people.

  1928. Their

  1929. children

  1930. go to

  1931. youth

  1932. group

  1933. and

  1934. they

  1935. go

  1936. and

  1937. do

  1938. Bible

  1939. study.

  1940. So

  1941. we

  1942. went

  1943. through

  1944. the

  1945. gospel

  1946. and

  1947. read

  1948. through

  1949. Acts

  1950. 17.

  1951. When

  1952. we

  1953. presented

  1954. the

  1955. picture

  1956. that

  1957. God

  1958. is

  1959. different

  1960. from

  1961. any

  1962. of

  1963. the

  1964. gods

  1965. that

  1966. the

  1967. Greeks

  1968. knew,

  1969. that

  1970. God

  1971. is

  1972. in

  1973. control

  1974. of

  1975. all

  1976. the

  1977. nations

  1978. and

  1979. God

  1980. is

  1981. in

  1982. control

  1983. even

  1984. where

  1985. people

  1986. live

  1987. and

  1988. how

  1989. everyone

  1990. moves,

  1991. she

  1992. is

  1993. confident.

  1994. She

  1995. wants

  1996. to

  1997. know

  1998. that

  1999. God.

  2000. She

  2001. wants

  2002. to

  2003. cease

  2004. thriving

  2005. and

  2006. know

  2007. a

  2008. creator

  2009. that

  2010. is

  2011. in

  2012. control

  2013. of

  2014. all

  2015. the

  2016. nations

  2017. and

  2018. everything

  2019. that

  2020. we

  2021. do.

  2022. But

  2023. from

  2024. an

  2025. atheistic

  2026. background,

  2027. she

  2028. finds it

  2029. very

  2030. hard

  2031. to

  2032. accept

  2033. that

  2034. there

  2035. is

  2036. actually

  2037. a

  2038. God

  2039. like

  2040. that.

  2041. She

  2042. is

  2043. still

  2044. wrestling

  2045. with

  2046. the

  2047. truth

  2048. of

  2049. the

  2050. gospel.

  2051. You

  2052. can

  2053. see

  2054. that

  2055. there

  2056. are

  2057. many

  2058. non-Christians

  2059. like

  2060. Rose

  2061. exploring

  2062. the

  2063. gospel

  2064. and

  2065. trying

  2066. to

  2067. work

  2068. out

  2069. what

  2070. it

  2071. means

  2072. for

  2073. them.

  2074. So

  2075. we

  2076. desperately

  2077. need

  2078. people

  2079. in

  2080. ESL

  2081. to

  2082. teach

  2083. and

  2084. we

  2085. need

  2086. people

  2087. if

  2088. you

  2089. can't

  2090. teach

  2091. English

  2092. or

  2093. do

  2094. other

  2095. things.

  2096. We

  2097. need

  2098. people

  2099. just

  2100. to

  2101. talk

  2102. with

  2103. these

  2104. people

  2105. on

  2106. a

  2107. Tuesday

  2108. and

  2109. Friday

  2110. morning.

  2111. We

  2112. have

  2113. a

  2114. play

  2115. group

  2116. called

  2117. Jelly Beans

  2118. on

  2119. Tuesday

  2120. and ESL

  2121. on

  2122. Friday.

  2123. It would

  2124. be

  2125. great

  2126. if

  2127. we

  2128. just

  2129. make

  2130. friends

  2131. with

  2132. them,

  2133. talk

  2134. to

  2135. them,

  2136. so

  2137. that

  2138. they

  2139. can

  2140. come

  2141. to

  2142. hear,

  2143. come

  2144. to

  2145. see

  2146. God,

  2147. come

  2148. to

  2149. see

  2150. His

  2151. work

  2152. and

  2153. come

  2154. to

  2155. know

  2156. the

  2157. Creator.

  2158. So

  2159. I

  2160. suggest

  2161. another

  2162. opportunity

  2163. for us

  2164. to

  2165. help

  2166. the

  2167. community

  2168. around

  2169. us

  2170. to

  2171. know

  2172. the

  2173. gospel.

  2174. And

  2175. this

  2176. is

  2177. actually

  2178. by

  2179. joining

  2180. me

  2181. in

  2182. going

  2183. on

  2184. a

  2185. global

  2186. mission.

  2187. I'm

  2188. planning

  2189. to

  2190. lead

  2191. a

  2192. team

  2193. to

  2194. go

  2195. to

  2196. China

  2197. at

  2198. the

  2199. end

  2200. of

  2201. the

  2202. year.

  2203. So

  2204. this

  2205. is

  2206. a

  2207. great

  2208. time

  2209. for

  2210. us

  2211. to

  2212. learn

  2213. how

  2214. to

  2215. be

  2216. in

  2217. a

  2218. different

  2219. culture.

  2220. And

  2221. try

  2222. to

  2223. cross

  2224. cultural

  2225. bridges.

  2226. And

  2227. this

  2228. is

  2229. the

  2230. things

  2231. that

  2232. we

  2233. need

  2234. exactly

  2235. to

  2236. reach

  2237. the

  2238. community

  2239. around

  2240. us.

  2241. We're

  2242. desperate

  2243. for

  2244. people

  2245. to

  2246. know

  2247. Jesus

  2248. and

  2249. encounter

  2250. Jesus.

  2251. So

  2252. we need

  2253. to

  2254. equip

  2255. ourselves

  2256. to

  2257. do

  2258. that

  2259. properly.

  2260. So

  2261. if

  2262. you're

  2263. interested

  2264. either

  2265. in

  2266. the

  2267. local

  2268. work

  2269. or

  2270. the

  2271. global

  2272. work

  2273. please

  2274. come

  2275. to

  2276. me

  2277. write

  2278. it

  2279. on

  2280. the

  2281. card

  2282. and

  2283. tell

  2284. me.

  2285. I'd

  2286. love

  2287. to

  2288. know.

  2289. I

  2290. want

  2291. to

  2292. end

  2293. the

  2294. sermon

  2295. though

  2296. on a

  2297. word

  2298. that

  2299. we

  2300. haven't

  2301. looked

  2302. at.

  2303. It's

  2304. in

  2305. verses

  2306. 3,

  2307. 7,

  2308. and

  2309. 11.

  2310. It's

  2311. called

  2312. Selah.

  2313. So

  2314. in the

  2315. Amplified

  2316. Bible

  2317. it

  2318. translates

  2319. as to

  2320. pause

  2321. and

  2322. think

  2323. on

  2324. that.

  2325. So

  2326. the

  2327. psalm

  2328. usually

  2329. is

  2330. written

  2331. in

  2332. the

  2333. Bible

  2334. so

  2335. we

  2336. have

  2337. a

  2338. paragraph

  2339. we

  2340. need

  2341. to

  2342. pause

  2343. and

  2344. think

  2345. on

  2346. what

  2347. that

  2348. means

  2349. for

  2350. us.

  2351. And

  2352. incidentally

  2353. there's

  2354. also a

  2355. name

  2356. of

  2357. Takeshi

  2358. and

  2359. Katie's

  2360. daughter.

  2361. You

  2362. can

  2363. ask

  2364. them

  2365. why

  2366. they

  2367. chose

  2368. that

  2369. name

  2370. at

  2371. the

  2372. end

  2373. of

  2374. the

  2375. service.

  2376. If

  2377. you

  2378. don't

  2379. get

  2380. to

  2381. speak

  2382. with

  2383. them

  2384. today

  2385. you

  2386. can

  2387. ask

  2388. them

  2389. throughout

  2390. the

  2391. year.

  2392. There

  2393. are

  2394. many

  2395. opportunities

  2396. to

  2397. do

  2398. that.

  2399. Actually

  2400. I

  2401. haven't

  2402. really

  2403. asked

  2404. you

  2405. properly.

  2406. I

  2407. have

  2408. asked

  2409. you

  2410. but

  2411. I

  2412. will

  2413. join

  2414. the

  2415. queue

  2416. at

  2417. the

  2418. end

  2419. of

  2420. the

  2421. service.

  2422. But

  2423. for

  2424. us

  2425. right

  2426. now we

  2427. need to

  2428. actually

  2429. pause

  2430. and

  2431. think

  2432. what

  2433. the

  2434. psalmist

  2435. is

  2436. trying

  2437. to

  2438. tell

  2439. us

  2440. to

  2441. do.

  2442. I

  2443. want

  2444. us

  2445. to

  2446. pause

  2447. and

  2448. think

  2449. on

  2450. two

  2451. questions

  2452. based

  2453. on

  2454. the

  2455. two

  2456. instructions

  2457. that

  2458. he's

  2459. given

  2460. us.

  2461. When

  2462. Jesus

  2463. comes

  2464. to

  2465. destroy

  2466. his

  2467. enemies

  2468. are

  2469. you

  2470. confident

  2471. to

  2472. stand

  2473. before

  2474. him?

  2475. Are

  2476. you

  2477. confident

  2478. by

  2479. the

  2480. fact

  2481. that

  2482. he's

  2483. going

  2484. to

  2485. destroy

  2486. his

  2487. enemies?

  2488. If

  2489. you

  2490. are

  2491. not

  2492. please

  2493. come

  2494. and

  2495. know

  2496. Jesus

  2497. so

  2498. that

  2499. you

  2500. will

  2501. be

  2502. glad

  2503. of

  2504. his

  2505. coming

  2506. judgment.

  2507. The

  2508. second

  2509. question

  2510. I

  2511. want

  2512. to

  2513. ask

  2514. you

  2515. is

  2516. are

  2517. you

  2518. taking

  2519. steps

  2520. to

  2521. stop

  2522. some

  2523. of

  2524. the

  2525. things

  2526. that

  2527. you

  2528. are

  2529. doing

  2530. so

  2531. that

  2532. you

  2533. will

  2534. know

  2535. God

  2536. that

  2537. is

  2538. going

  2539. to

  2540. be

  2541. exalted

  2542. amongst

  2543. the

  2544. nations?

  2545. Are

  2546. there

  2547. things

  2548. we

  2549. need

  2550. to

  2551. actively

  2552. stop

  2553. doing?

  2554. Are

  2555. there

  2556. things

  2557. that

  2558. we

  2559. need

  2560. to

  2561. stop

  2562. pursuing

  2563. in

  2564. our

  2565. lives?

  2566. So

  2567. that

  2568. we

  2569. can

  2570. have

  2571. the

  2572. energy

  2573. to

  2574. strive

  2575. to

  2576. know

  2577. God

  2578. and

  2579. strive

  2580. to

  2581. do

  2582. things

  2583. for

  2584. him

  2585. not

  2586. for

  2587. ourselves

  2588. not

  2589. for

  2590. our

  2591. security

  2592. but

  2593. so

  2594. that

  2595. he

  2596. is

  2597. exalted

  2598. amongst

  2599. the

  2600. nations.

  2601. I'm

  2602. going to

  2603. hand the

  2604. time back

  2605. to Nick

  2606. and help

  2607. us to

  2608. pause

  2609. to think

  2610. on

  2611. that.
