  1. You'll often hear people say in the media, it's a regular thing in response to some kind of a tragedy.

  2. Our thoughts and our prayers are with their loved ones.

  3. I've heard it even from the mouths of avowed atheists tweeted.

  4. Our prayers are with you. Our thoughts and our prayers are with you.

  5. And I'm kind of thinking in that moment, what does that mean for you?

  6. The word prayer in that moment.

  7. You see, most people on this planet pray at least some time in their lives.

  8. It is true, I think, that prayer is practically a worldwide activity.

  9. But what prayer actually means is vastly different from individual to individual.

  10. The difference in what prayer means or what it is or how you go about it is determined by what we think the God or the being is that we're praying to.

  11. What we think that relationship is with our God will determine what prayer is like for us.

  12. So, in other words, when a Buddhist spins his prayer wheel or the Hindu sits in mystic silence or the Muslim with his prayer mat faces Mecca five times a day,

  13. all are reflecting the character of the God or the gods to whom they're praying to and what that relationship with that God or that being is like.

  14. And it's exactly the same for the Christian.

  15. Our prayer is shaped and defined by the being to whom we pray.

  16. And what the Bible reveals about God shapes our prayer life in two major kind of ways.

  17. First of all, for instance, Jeremiah 32 is a great little passage, 32 verse 17, which says,

  18. That verse alone shapes the way you pray and your expectations when you pray.

  19. Or take it from that and go to, for instance, Romans 8.

  20. And you get this stunning picture in Romans 8 of the Christian life where it says that we were once slaves to sin.

  21. We were slaves to death and fear.

  22. We were hostile to God.

  23. We were unable to please God in any kind of way.

  24. And now we are free sons of the Father and co-heirs of his kingdom in Christ.

  25. That is, through being united with Jesus, who died to free us,

  26. we now live a new life in which God himself dwells with us by his Holy Spirit.

  27. It's because of the saving work of God that we are raised up from our low position of being cut off from God

  28. and being granted free access to the almighty, true and living God,

  29. which Jeremiah says nothing is too hard for him.

  30. He's the one who creates everything and sustains everything.

  31. And according to Romans 8, there's no barrier between us and this God because of Jesus.

  32. It's been torn down.

  33. It's like Jesus, through his life and death and resurrection, has reconnected the phone lines.

  34. And we can start communicating with God again.

  35. What that means is that prayer is not an addition.

  36. It's not an appendix to the Christian life.

  37. It's not sort of sitting over here, one of these things that we get to do when we get around to it.

  38. But our prayer life is, in fact, at the very heart of who we are as Christians.

  39. It's the very heart of who we are as Christians and how we relate to our heavenly Father.

  40. It is phenomenal that the most famous of prayers, the Lord's Prayer,

  41. simply starts with our Father or quite literally, my Dad.

  42. It's phenomenal.

  43. And our prayer life is, therefore, one of the greatest indicators of our spiritual health,

  44. individually and corporately.

  45. It shines light on whether we know about God through theological concepts

  46. or actually in communion with our Father, our Dad.

  47. That relationship is operating, working, communion with God.

  48. So what an incredible privilege that we have as Christians.

  49. One of the photos I love is JFK in the Oval Office

  50. with a bunch of the heads of the United States at that time,

  51. having obviously a very important meeting,

  52. and little John Jr. coming into the Oval Office,

  53. having direct access to the Commander-in-Chief,

  54. unquestioned, not stopped by anyone.

  55. Everyone else in that room needs to make an appointment,

  56. except the son.

  57. At any time, he wanders in.

  58. What a privilege we have in prayer.

  59. And so it is one of the greatest indicators of our spiritual health.

  60. Not your Bible knowledge.

  61. How well are you communing with God?

  62. And so as we kick off this new year of ministry,

  63. as we do for, and have been doing for a number of years,

  64. we begin the ministry year in a week of prayer.

  65. And it's just a week, and a week of 52 weeks is one thing,

  66. but I think what I want to do every year

  67. is at very least symbolically

  68. to start the ministry year on our knees

  69. and to independence upon God,

  70. seeking His agenda, His will for our church,

  71. His enabling for Him to do His work,

  72. and to continue the year on our knees.

  73. So we do this every year to make a statement as a church.

  74. It's a statement to God.

  75. It's a statement to this world in which we live.

  76. It's a statement to our own consciences

  77. that we exist as a church

  78. to do things that we cannot do

  79. without the supernatural grace of God.

  80. Everything good, everything worthwhile,

  81. everything eternal,

  82. and God-glorifying that we seek to do as a church,

  83. we cannot do without the supernatural grace of God.

  84. And so this prayer week, as it does every year,

  85. proclaims that we exist as a church here at St. Paul's

  86. mainly to do the humanly impossible.

  87. The humanly impossible.

  88. I love what Jacob said just a moment ago

  89. and how that shapes the organisation of IJM.

  90. I communicated at our heartbeat night in November

  91. that for the next three years,

  92. we're going to make a concerted effort

  93. into breaking what is known as the 200 Barrier.

  94. It's details that I'm going to talk about a lot

  95. and have talked about a lot,

  96. breaking this 200 Barrier.

  97. We've hovered around as a church

  98. for at least a couple of decades,

  99. and so we're going to put energy and focus

  100. into taking steps, deliberate steps,

  101. to move beyond that.

  102. And the intention and the vision

  103. behind this concerted effort

  104. is to see people know and treasure

  105. the Lord Jesus Christ for the first time

  106. through the ministry of,

  107. and the people of this church.

  108. And our vision statement says

  109. that we are desperate

  110. for people to encounter the Lord Jesus.

  111. And the word desperate

  112. just implies for me sweat,

  113. labouring, sacrifice,

  114. change for God to be glorified.

  115. Our Lord has not called us

  116. to an impossible mission.

  117. He's called us to a demanding mission.

  118. And I chose Colossians 4, 2-4,

  119. for the beginning of prayer week

  120. for this very reason.

  121. Because we cannot be comfortable

  122. sitting the size of the church we are

  123. and not making desperate moves

  124. for more people to see Jesus.

  125. If God chooses not to grow,

  126. that's His business.

  127. But it's another thing

  128. where there's moral and spiritual apathy

  129. not to want to change.

  130. That's reprehensible

  131. as far as I'm concerned.

  132. And so we're making deliberate changes.

  133. Nick's alluded to them.

  134. They're going to start next week

  135. of moving forward as a church.

  136. But I want us to know

  137. that we're moving forward,

  138. seeking God to do

  139. what we cannot do

  140. as we work forward.

  141. Yes, there is sacrifice,

  142. there is sweat,

  143. and there is thoughtful strategy,

  144. there is risk on our behalf.

  145. But it is a deeply spiritual

  146. and God-dependent activity

  147. that we are doing.

  148. And so if I understand Colossians 4,

  149. which hopefully got in front of you right now,

  150. open that is,

  151. if I understand this text correctly,

  152. the human key

  153. that might unlock

  154. the blessing of God's power and grace

  155. in our mission to Chatswood

  156. is devoted,

  157. watchful,

  158. and thankful prayer.

  159. You see, this text here

  160. gives me a strong hope

  161. that God will open a door

  162. to His word in Chatswood

  163. and that faith will come to many people

  164. if we pray desperately

  165. for Him to do that.

  166. In Colossians 4, 2-4,

  167. Paul is urging the Colossians

  168. to pray

  169. just like I am urging us today

  170. to pray.

  171. In fact,

  172. to pray for something quite specific.

  173. And I see two things here

  174. in these verses

  175. that he wants them to pray for.

  176. We'll look at those first,

  177. those two things first

  178. before I will then turn our attention

  179. to how it is

  180. that we pray

  181. for those two things.

  182. The two things

  183. are for an open door

  184. and for a powerful word.

  185. An open door

  186. and a powerful word.

  187. Paul here

  188. wants God

  189. to work both

  190. in the recipients

  191. of the message

  192. and him,

  193. the preacher

  194. of the message.

  195. So in verse 3,

  196. he says,

  197. Now there are

  198. at least

  199. three other times

  200. in the New Testament

  201. that Paul uses

  202. this same image

  203. that he does here

  204. of an open door.

  205. He uses it

  206. in Acts 14, 27,

  207. in 1 Corinthians 16, 8, 9

  208. and in 2 Corinthians 2, 12.

  209. And each time

  210. this open door

  211. means,

  212. seems to be

  213. a remarkable set

  214. of circumstances

  215. that would have been

  216. very effective

  217. for the gospel.

  218. That's what he's praying for.

  219. Remarkable circumstances

  220. for the gospel,

  221. reception of the gospel.

  222. And so when Paul says

  223. in verse 3,

  224. Pray for us too

  225. that I may,

  226. that God may open a door

  227. for our message

  228. so that we may reclaim

  229. the mystery of Christ,

  230. I take him to mean

  231. that God

  232. changes

  233. things

  234. and changes

  235. people's hearts

  236. and changes

  237. circumstances

  238. and does a remarkable work

  239. when people pray.

  240. When Christians pray.

  241. Circumstances

  242. and attitude

  243. and receptivity

  244. of the gospel

  245. change

  246. so that instead of

  247. hitting a brick wall

  248. again and again

  249. and again,

  250. the gospel

  251. finds an open door

  252. and becomes

  253. inexplicably

  254. effective.

  255. Give you some,

  256. one example

  257. of this

  258. was a case

  259. of Duncan Campbell.

  260. He's a minister

  261. last century

  262. in the United Free Church

  263. of Scotland.

  264. And on the Monday

  265. of Easter

  266. 1952,

  267. Campbell

  268. was seated

  269. on the platform

  270. of Hamilton Road

  271. Presbyterian Church

  272. in Bangor,

  273. Northern Ireland

  274. and it's a church

  275. that Nat and I

  276. have visited twice

  277. and I've spoken at

  278. and he had just

  279. finished speaking.

  280. He's sitting on the platform,

  281. just finished speaking

  282. to the Faith Mission

  283. Convention

  284. when he

  285. sensed

  286. an inner voice

  287. say to him,

  288. Bernare.

  289. Now Bernare

  290. is a small

  291. island

  292. in the Hebrides

  293. and

  294. in that moment

  295. Duncan bowed

  296. his head

  297. and he prayed

  298. silently

  299. and again

  300. came the name

  301. Bernare.

  302. He prayed on

  303. and it came again

  304. Bernare.

  305. And so

  306. in that moment

  307. sitting on the

  308. platform

  309. Campbell turned

  310. to the chairman

  311. of the convention

  312. and whispered

  313. in his ear

  314. brother

  315. you'll need

  316. to excuse me

  317. the Holy Spirit

  318. has just told me

  319. that I've got to

  320. go to Bernare.

  321. Chairman

  322. objected

  323. mildly

  324. you're the

  325. speaker for

  326. tomorrow.

  327. What are we

  328. going to do?

  329. But nothing

  330. would stop

  331. Campbell.

  332. He'd never

  333. been to Bernare

  334. before.

  335. He had never

  336. known anyone

  337. from Bernare

  338. before.

  339. He had

  340. never received

  341. any correspondence

  342. from anyone

  343. from there.

  344. He went

  345. straight back

  346. walked off

  347. the platform

  348. went straight

  349. back to his

  350. hotel

  351. packed his

  352. two suitcases

  353. and contacted

  354. the airport.

  355. The airport

  356. said

  357. we don't have

  358. any connections

  359. with that

  360. island.

  361. It's too

  362. small.

  363. It's too

  364. far out of

  365. the way.

  366. No one

  367. flies there.

  368. So he said

  369. fly me to

  370. the nearest

  371. island.

  372. So he flew

  373. him to

  374. the nearest

  375. island and

  376. when he got

  377. to the

  378. nearest

  379. island he

  380. went down

  381. to the

  382. coast and

  383. asked how

  384. do I get

  385. to Bernare?

  386. And the

  387. answer from

  388. fishermen was

  389. there's no

  390. commercial route

  391. between here

  392. and Bernare

  393. but as it

  394. happens I'm

  395. going that

  396. way and I'll

  397. take you there

  398. on my

  399. fishing boat

  400. for a

  401. certain amount

  402. of money

  403. and the

  404. certain amount

  405. of money

  406. was exactly

  407. what he had

  408. in his pocket

  409. in that

  410. moment.

  411. Got to

  412. Bernare

  413. fishermen

  414. dumped him

  415. on the

  416. beach

  417. he climbed

  418. up a hill

  419. on the

  420. beach

  421. found himself

  422. alone

  423. sitting up

  424. there

  425. except he's

  426. on the

  427. edge of a

  428. ploughed field

  429. where the

  430. farmer's doing

  431. some work

  432. he called

  433. the farmer

  434. over and

  435. said can

  436. you go and

  437. tell your

  438. pastor of

  439. this island

  440. that Duncan

  441. Campbell has

  442. arrived

  443. and the

  444. farmer said

  445. we don't

  446. have a

  447. minister

  448. do you

  449. have elders

  450. Campbell

  451. asked

  452. yes

  453. well then

  454. go and get

  455. the nearest

  456. elder and

  457. tell him

  458. Duncan

  459. Campbell's

  460. arrived

  461. so the

  462. farmer

  463. somewhat

  464. puzzled

  465. as you

  466. would be

  467. headed off

  468. across the

  469. field

  470. and Campbell

  471. sat there

  472. on his

  473. suitcases

  474. and waited

  475. for him

  476. to come

  477. back

  478. the farmer

  479. comes back

  480. after some

  481. time and

  482. says

  483. he's expecting

  484. you

  485. he's been

  486. waiting for

  487. you to

  488. arrive

  489. he has a

  490. place ready

  491. for you

  492. and he's

  493. already

  494. announced

  495. the meetings

  496. are beginning

  497. at nine

  498. o'clock

  499. tonight

  500. you see

  501. while Campbell

  502. had been

  503. speaking at

  504. that convention

  505. in northern

  506. Ireland

  507. three days

  508. earlier this

  509. elder had

  510. spent his

  511. day praying

  512. in his

  513. shed

  514. for God

  515. to send

  516. revival to

  517. this island

  518. and his

  519. wife heard

  520. him from

  521. the house

  522. praying in

  523. the shed

  524. and his

  525. wife heard

  526. him say

  527. Lord I

  528. don't know

  529. where he

  530. is but

  531. you know

  532. where he

  533. is and

  534. everything is

  535. possible for

  536. you according

  537. to Jeremiah

  538. 32 so you

  539. send Uncle

  540. Campbell to

  541. this island

  542. and he

  543. knew that

  544. God was

  545. going to

  546. do it

  547. he was

  548. so sure

  549. of it

  550. that he

  551. would be

  552. there in

  553. three days

  554. that he

  555. made all

  556. the arrangements

  557. to use the

  558. local church

  559. and announced

  560. all the

  561. services

  562. and from

  563. nine o'clock

  564. that night

  565. great revival

  566. came to the

  567. island of

  568. Bernare

  569. great door

  570. had opened

  571. to the

  572. word

  573. that no

  574. man could

  575. shut

  576. because God

  577. had opened

  578. it beyond

  579. expectations

  580. do you pray

  581. like that

  582. desperate

  583. for people

  584. to know

  585. Christ

  586. desperate

  587. for revival

  588. to come

  589. to Chatswood

  590. so the

  591. first thing

  592. we should

  593. pray for

  594. this year

  595. is that

  596. God

  597. would work

  598. in all the

  599. circumstances

  600. surrounding

  601. our people

  602. and our

  603. ministry

  604. including

  605. the hearts

  606. of everyone

  607. who hears

  608. the gospel

  609. to open

  610. wide

  611. and effective

  612. the door

  613. of the gospel

  614. let this

  615. sink into

  616. your minds

  617. and your

  618. hearts today

  619. the key

  620. to opening

  621. the door

  622. of God's

  623. blessing

  624. on our

  625. vision

  626. is in

  627. seeing people

  628. come to

  629. Christ

  630. is that

  631. kind of

  632. prayer

  633. prayer

  634. but it's

  635. risky

  636. isn't

  637. it

  638. it is

  639. risky

  640. trustful

  641. hopeful

  642. prayer

  643. and that's

  644. the first

  645. thing

  646. that Paul

  647. mentions

  648. for prayer

  649. and the

  650. second

  651. thing

  652. for prayer

  653. is for

  654. clarity

  655. of the

  656. message

  657. and boldness

  658. of the

  659. messenger

  660. have a look

  661. there in

  662. verses 3

  663. and 4

  664. pray for us

  665. 2

  666. that God

  667. may open

  668. a door

  669. to our

  670. message

  671. so that

  672. we may

  673. proclaim

  674. the mystery

  675. of Christ

  676. for which

  677. I'm in

  678. chains

  679. and pray

  680. that I

  681. may

  682. proclaim

  683. it

  684. clearly

  685. as I

  686. should

  687. so Paul

  688. exhorts

  689. the

  690. Colossians

  691. here

  692. to persevere

  693. in prayer

  694. and follows

  695. it immediately

  696. with a request

  697. for them

  698. to pray

  699. for himself

  700. and his

  701. co-workers

  702. and the

  703. content of

  704. his prayer

  705. is not

  706. for personal

  707. benefit

  708. for Paul

  709. it's not

  710. about his

  711. retirement plans

  712. it's not

  713. about his

  714. superannuation

  715. it's not

  716. about his

  717. family

  718. it's not

  719. about

  720. you know

  721. his

  722. work

  723. scenario

  724. it's

  725. it's for

  726. Paul

  727. and his

  728. companions

  729. to preach

  730. the word

  731. of God

  732. clearly

  733. and he

  734. mentions

  735. specifically

  736. here

  737. that he

  738. is in

  739. chains

  740. for his

  741. preaching

  742. but he

  743. doesn't

  744. ask

  745. for prayer

  746. to be

  747. released

  748. from the

  749. chains

  750. in order

  751. to go

  752. on

  753. preaching

  754. he's not

  755. asking for

  756. that

  757. he's not

  758. asking God

  759. you know

  760. guys pray

  761. for me

  762. that God

  763. will solve

  764. all these

  765. issues

  766. so that I'm

  767. now set

  768. free to

  769. proclaim

  770. his gospel

  771. doesn't

  772. pray for

  773. personal

  774. benefit

  775. he prays

  776. for the

  777. effectiveness

  778. of the

  779. message

  780. going

  781. out

  782. and we

  783. see

  784. at a

  785. number

  786. of

  787. points

  788. in the

  789. New

  790. Testament

  791. that Paul

  792. places

  793. a great

  794. importance

  795. on his

  796. converts

  797. and other

  798. Christians

  799. partnering

  800. with him

  801. through

  802. prayer

  803. as he

  804. seeks to

  805. win the

  806. Gentile

  807. world

  808. for

  809. Christ

  810. see that

  811. in Romans

  812. 15

  813. Ephesians

  814. 6

  815. 1

  816. he

  817. earnestly

  818. desired

  819. their help

  820. and support

  821. as he

  822. labored to

  823. see the

  824. gospel

  825. spread to

  826. the ends

  827. of the

  828. earth

  829. and I

  830. want to

  831. suggest

  832. there is

  833. no

  834. better

  835. way

  836. to

  837. express

  838. this

  839. partnership

  840. than

  841. intercessory

  842. prayer

  843. no better

  844. way to

  845. express

  846. this

  847. partnership

  848. we

  849. exist

  850. in a

  851. materialistic

  852. world

  853. that is

  854. so

  855. obsessed

  856. with

  857. doing

  858. partnership

  859. is me

  860. doing

  861. stuff

  862. I

  863. want to

  864. suggest

  865. to you

  866. if you

  867. cannot

  868. fill a

  869. roster

  870. here

  871. that

  872. in

  873. no

  874. way

  875. is

  876. prayer

  877. at

  878. all

  879. a

  880. secondary

  881. activity

  882. when

  883. he

  884. calls

  885. these

  886. Christians

  887. to pray

  888. for him

  889. and his

  890. colleagues

  891. he's

  892. calling

  893. them

  894. to an

  895. ongoing

  896. activity

  897. this

  898. is a

  899. prayer

  900. for the

  901. preacher

  902. for the

  903. evangelist

  904. for the

  905. community

  906. group

  907. leader

  908. for the

  909. music

  910. director

  911. for everyone

  912. every

  913. Christian

  914. who has

  915. the word

  916. of God

  917. on their

  918. lips

  919. can I

  920. say

  921. that as

  922. your senior

  923. pastor here

  924. at St.

  925. Paul's

  926. that I

  927. am aware

  928. constantly

  929. every day

  930. that I

  931. need your

  932. prayers

  933. the

  934. the

  935. the

  936. longer

  937. I

  938. have

  939. been

  940. in

  941. pastoral

  942. ministry

  943. which is

  944. over

  945. 20

  946. years

  947. now

  948. I

  949. am

  950. becoming

  951. more

  952. and more

  953. aware

  954. that the

  955. work

  956. that God

  957. has called

  958. me to

  959. do

  960. is

  961. very

  962. demanding

  963. and I

  964. can't do

  965. it

  966. I

  967. barely

  968. know my

  969. own

  970. heart

  971. let alone

  972. yours

  973. and God

  974. is in the

  975. business of

  976. shifting

  977. people's

  978. hearts

  979. and minds

  980. to align

  981. themselves

  982. to Jesus

  983. that's a

  984. work that

  985. he does

  986. and so

  987. Paul needed

  988. their prayers

  989. because he

  990. could imagine

  991. himself

  992. speaking the

  993. gospel in a

  994. way that was

  995. not clear

  996. that was not

  997. bold

  998. that was

  999. not

  1000. powerful

  1001. I

  1002. got to

  1003. say how

  1004. much

  1005. more

  1006. can I

  1007. imagine

  1008. that for

  1009. myself

  1010. of needing

  1011. that prayer

  1012. the greatest

  1013. preacher

  1014. and

  1015. missionary

  1016. who ever

  1017. lived

  1018. said that

  1019. the

  1020. effectiveness

  1021. of his

  1022. preaching

  1023. depended on

  1024. the prayers

  1025. of the

  1026. church

  1027. so if

  1028. you're

  1029. sitting

  1030. here

  1031. and you're

  1032. going

  1033. I'm not

  1034. being gripped

  1035. by this

  1036. preaching

  1037. it might

  1038. be your

  1039. fault

  1040. I'll

  1041. just put

  1042. that as

  1043. a

  1044. side

  1045. if it's

  1046. true for

  1047. Paul it's

  1048. true a

  1049. hundred times

  1050. over for

  1051. me

  1052. I put

  1053. that

  1054. aside

  1055. slightly

  1056. as a

  1057. humorous

  1058. thing

  1059. but it's

  1060. actually

  1061. true

  1062. I sort

  1063. of

  1064. emphasize

  1065. that

  1066. it

  1067. actually

  1068. is

  1069. true

  1070. preaching

  1071. is a

  1072. two-way

  1073. activity

  1074. I'll

  1075. preach

  1076. on this

  1077. one day

  1078. once upon a

  1079. time

  1080. one day

  1081. sometime in

  1082. the future

  1083. it's a

  1084. two-way

  1085. activity

  1086. if you've

  1087. not

  1088. prepared

  1089. your

  1090. heart

  1091. don't

  1092. expect me

  1093. to be

  1094. able to

  1095. prepare

  1096. it for

  1097. you

  1098. we're

  1099. gathered

  1100. for

  1101. worship

  1102. your

  1103. heart

  1104. needs

  1105. to be

  1106. prepared

  1107. so what

  1108. what happens

  1109. right now

  1110. even as we

  1111. have the

  1112. word of

  1113. God

  1114. open in

  1115. front of

  1116. us

  1117. in

  1118. Colossians

  1119. 4

  1120. 2

  1121. 4

  1122. depends

  1123. in great

  1124. measure

  1125. on how

  1126. you have

  1127. prayed

  1128. for me

  1129. or us

  1130. as we

  1131. gather

  1132. have you

  1133. ever thought

  1134. about that

  1135. these are

  1136. Paul's

  1137. two prayer

  1138. requests

  1139. for a

  1140. door to

  1141. be open

  1142. in the

  1143. lives of

  1144. unbelievers

  1145. and secondly

  1146. for a

  1147. clear and

  1148. powerful

  1149. gospel message

  1150. to go

  1151. through that

  1152. door

  1153. and it is

  1154. with a

  1155. real sense

  1156. of urgency

  1157. that I

  1158. call you

  1159. to devote

  1160. yourselves

  1161. to those

  1162. prayers

  1163. in 2018

  1164. so this

  1165. brings me

  1166. to how

  1167. we are

  1168. to pray

  1169. and Paul

  1170. mentions three

  1171. things in

  1172. verse 2

  1173. devote

  1174. yourselves

  1175. to prayer

  1176. being watchful

  1177. and thankful

  1178. pray with

  1179. devotion

  1180. with watchfulness

  1181. and with

  1182. thanksgiving

  1183. the call

  1184. of God's

  1185. word here

  1186. is to

  1187. devote

  1188. yourselves

  1189. to prayer

  1190. it should

  1191. not come

  1192. as a

  1193. surprise

  1194. given what

  1195. Paul has

  1196. requested

  1197. we pray

  1198. for in

  1199. verses 3

  1200. and 4

  1201. if prayer

  1202. is so

  1203. great

  1204. and central

  1205. to unlocking

  1206. God's purpose

  1207. for the

  1208. universe

  1209. and for

  1210. your life

  1211. and for

  1212. my life

  1213. it's not

  1214. surprising

  1215. that God

  1216. would command

  1217. us to

  1218. devote

  1219. ourselves

  1220. to

  1221. prayer

  1222. and to

  1223. this prayer

  1224. specifically

  1225. the word

  1226. be devoted

  1227. to

  1228. or persevere

  1229. in

  1230. or continue

  1231. in

  1232. occurs

  1233. six times

  1234. in the

  1235. New Testament

  1236. in relation

  1237. to prayer

  1238. Acts 1

  1239. 14

  1240. they all

  1241. join together

  1242. constantly

  1243. in prayer

  1244. Acts 2

  1245. 42

  1246. they

  1247. that's the

  1248. early church

  1249. devoted

  1250. themselves

  1251. to the

  1252. apostles

  1253. teaching

  1254. and to

  1255. the fellowship

  1256. and to

  1257. the breaking

  1258. of bread

  1259. and to

  1260. prayer

  1261. Acts 6

  1262. 4

  1263. the apostles

  1264. said that

  1265. they would

  1266. devote

  1267. themselves

  1268. to

  1269. prayer

  1270. and to

  1271. the ministry

  1272. of the

  1273. word

  1274. Romans 12

  1275. 12

  1276. be joyful

  1277. in hope

  1278. patient

  1279. in affliction

  1280. faithful

  1281. in prayer

  1282. they go

  1283. all together

  1284. those three

  1285. things

  1286. can't have

  1287. one without

  1288. the other

  1289. joyful in

  1290. hope

  1291. patient

  1292. in affliction

  1293. faithful

  1294. in prayer

  1295. Ephesians

  1296. 6

  1297. 18

  1298. pray in

  1299. the spirit

  1300. on all

  1301. occasions

  1302. it means

  1303. to pray

  1304. often

  1305. it means

  1306. to pray

  1307. regularly

  1308. prayer

  1309. prayer

  1310. is not

  1311. infrequent

  1312. and prayer

  1313. is not

  1314. hit

  1315. and miss

  1316. being devoted

  1317. to prayer

  1318. means that

  1319. you are not

  1320. haphazard

  1321. you're not

  1322. forgetful

  1323. it means

  1324. that you

  1325. take steps

  1326. to see

  1327. that it

  1328. is part

  1329. of your

  1330. regular

  1331. life

  1332. in the

  1333. same way

  1334. that eating

  1335. and sleeping

  1336. and going

  1337. to the toilet

  1338. are part

  1339. of your

  1340. regular

  1341. life

  1342. and I

  1343. think

  1344. this is

  1345. also

  1346. implied

  1347. in the

  1348. word

  1349. watchfulness

  1350. to describe

  1351. the sort

  1352. of prayer

  1353. life

  1354. that we

  1355. are called

  1356. to

  1357. watchfulness

  1358. is often

  1359. used

  1360. in reference

  1361. to the

  1362. second coming

  1363. of Christ

  1364. and the

  1365. final judgment

  1366. in the

  1367. New Testament

  1368. the vision

  1369. of the future

  1370. God's plan

  1371. his purposes

  1372. the coming

  1373. of the Lord

  1374. Jesus

  1375. and the

  1376. final

  1377. ushering

  1378. in of the

  1379. kingdom

  1380. of God

  1381. is to

  1382. govern

  1383. not just

  1384. the content

  1385. of our

  1386. prayer life

  1387. but the

  1388. devotion to

  1389. our prayer

  1390. life

  1391. God

  1392. is working

  1393. out his

  1394. purposes

  1395. and he

  1396. will bring

  1397. it all

  1398. to

  1399. completion

  1400. so don't

  1401. go to

  1402. sleep

  1403. at the

  1404. wheel

  1405. direct

  1406. your mind

  1407. to Christ

  1408. and his

  1409. coming

  1410. and the

  1411. fulfillment

  1412. of all

  1413. our hope

  1414. and joy

  1415. labor

  1416. against

  1417. the

  1418. distractions

  1419. labor

  1420. against

  1421. the

  1422. hindrances

  1423. and the

  1424. temptations

  1425. towards

  1426. prayerless

  1427. praying

  1428. prayerless

  1429. praying

  1430. is when

  1431. we go

  1432. through

  1433. the motions

  1434. we're not

  1435. actually

  1436. communing

  1437. with God

  1438. we're

  1439. ticking off

  1440. a list

  1441. but we're

  1442. not actually

  1443. communing

  1444. with God

  1445. that's

  1446. prayerless

  1447. praying

  1448. and you

  1449. may as

  1450. well not

  1451. pray

  1452. be vigilant

  1453. my friends

  1454. like a

  1455. sentry on

  1456. duty outside

  1457. the camp

  1458. at night

  1459. knowing that

  1460. if you go

  1461. to sleep

  1462. in this

  1463. job

  1464. the enemy

  1465. will overthrow

  1466. the mission

  1467. this is

  1468. the tempo

  1469. of prayer

  1470. that is

  1471. often

  1472. missing

  1473. when the

  1474. church

  1475. has settled

  1476. into the

  1477. world

  1478. and is

  1479. just

  1480. using

  1481. prayer

  1482. as a

  1483. domestic

  1484. intercom

  1485. system

  1486. instead of

  1487. a battlefield

  1488. walkie-talkie

  1489. and is

  1490. so

  1491. serious

  1492. the battle

  1493. is

  1494. heaven

  1495. and hell

  1496. hang

  1497. in the

  1498. balance

  1499. for

  1500. potentially

  1501. people

  1502. sitting

  1503. in this

  1504. room

  1505. right now

1506. but a whole bunch of people who are not sitting in this room right now

1507. and it's hanging the balance for those people this year.

1508. This year, it's hanging the balance for them.

1509. So be watchful, awake, vigilant and pray.

1510. Pray the way you would if you knew that two of your unbelieving friends

1511. would hear the gospel for the very last time next Sunday.

  1512. Pray that way.

1513. And finally, Paul calls us to pray with thanksgiving.

1514. It doesn't seem right to pray for God, to open a door of faith for others

1515. without remembering that that's the very thing he has done for you if you're a Christian.

  1516. Through remarkable circumstances,

1517. someone has prayed that you would receive the gospel,

1518. and God has done it.

1519. And you didn't do it.

1520. You didn't know about it.

  1521. God did it.

1522. When we pray for the salvation of others,

1523. isn't the fervency of our prayer a mirror of how thankful that we are of our own salvation?

1524. That is, if there's not fervency in prayer

1525. for the gospel to go out to others,

1526. then maybe the issue is not my prayer schedule or the devotional book I'm using,

1527. but in actual fact, my grasp of the gospel itself.

1528. My own gratitude for it.

1529. I suspect that as we grow in thankfulness for our own rescue, for our own salvation,

1530. we will pray with a new zeal for others.

1531. Now, I wrote a core value of devotion to prayer based on this passage in Colossians 4.

1532. It's a core value for us as a church written on board just outside the door there.

1533. But I want to be honest.

1534. I need this core value to further penetrate my heart and shape my life in 2018.

1535. I've always, in my 20-something years as a Christian,

1536. always found prayer to be hard work.

1537. It's partly because of my sin,

1538. and it's probably mostly because of my sin,

1539. but it's also partly the way God has wired me,

1540. although I'm not blaming him for wiring me in a particular way.

1541. I'm not doing the Eve, Adam and Eve issue there.

1542. You gave me that woman.

  1543. It's your problem.

  1544. I'm an activist,

1545. which means that when my feet hit the ground first thing in the morning,

  1546. they generally don't stop.

1547. I get busy on stuff.

1548. And so what I've got to do is I have to take steps

1549. to ensure it is incorporated into my daily life.

1550. And I do this in a number of ways in terms of meetings with staff

1551. and other things like that.

  1552. But for me personally,

1553. there's a window of quietness in my household and in my life

1554. at the beginning of every day,

  1555. somewhere between 5.30 and 6,

1556. but definitely by 6.30 when I get up

1557. and the first thing I do is I put the kettle on and get a cup of coffee.

1558. And then I sit in a quiet spot

1559. and I immediately engage with God

1560. through his word and prayer in that moment.

1561. I need it before everything starts happening for me.

  1562. And I've got a scheduling.

1563. And because it's so crucial,

1564. it's in my diary and alarm goes off.

  1565. Bing, bing, bing, bing.

1566. To make sure that it's happening every day.

1567. Our core value says that as a church,

1568. we are committed to consistently bringing all things to God in prayer,

1569. intentionally building prayer into the center of our life together,

1570. developing a culture of natural and instructed prayerfulness

1571. when interacting with each other,

1572. encouraging and equipping for prayer on a personal and family level,

1573. and incorporating prayer into every church activity.

1574. So let us join together in seeing this core value,

1575. which is written on the wall,

1576. be written, in fact, into our hearts in such a way

1577. that it shapes our actions and our attitudes,

1578. which is what values actually are meant to do

1579. and do, in fact, do.

  1580. But in the immediate,

1581. will you join me in this prayer week

  1582. and throughout this year

1583. in being devoted to praying

1584. that a door would open to the gospel

1585. among many, many precious unbelievers

1586. and that we would proclaim the gospel

1587. with clarity and with power.

1588. So two very simple things to do this week,

  1589. this coming week.

1590. Come to Heartbeat on Wednesday night

1591. and be reminded of our vision

1592. and some of the strategies and risks

1593. that we're taking to reach people

1594. and then we're going to pray for those things.

1595. So come to Heartbeat this Wednesday night here.

1596. And this week, as Nick has already said,

  1597. in this coming week,

1598. we're sending out prayer points via email.

1599. The staff are going to be gathering

1600. for prayer at 10 o'clock each day

1601. and if you are here on site,

1602. then please come and join us.

  1603. But if you're not,

1604. which I suspect majority are not,

  1605. then set an alarm,

  1606. put in your diary,

1607. do whatever it is that you need to do,

1608. wrap string around your finger

  1609. and wherever you are,

1610. wherever God has placed you,

1611. stop and pray in that moment

  1612. at 10 o'clock each day.

1613. Another thing you could do

1614. is join the team here,

1615. nine o'clock every Sunday morning

1616. and we pray not that the music will go well

  1617. or people would come.

1618. We pray for the proclamation of the gospel.

  1619. Hearts will be open

1620. in all of our corporate gatherings each Sunday.

1621. And so, brothers and sisters,

1622. pray for a door to be opened to the gospel

  1623. as we labour,

  1624. take risks,

  1625. sacrifice

1626. to make the gospel known

  1627. with clarity and boldness

1628. in our mission field in 2018.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.
