  1. Good morning everyone, great to see you this morning and let me just say thank you for

  2. those who are currently in the process of doing translation work for me and throughout

  3. this service but also the enormous amount of work that happens in the background for

  4. translation work so that we are prepared Sunday by Sunday.

  5. I'm reticent to say it but it was astounding to sing that Mandarin song.

  6. It in fact brought tears to my eyes for something that was a great song, theologically really

  7. strong and expressing a real heart worship of God and yet it didn't originate from an

  8. Anglo person.

  9. I think that is fantastic for us as a church, for those of us who are kind of used to dominating

  10. from the Anglo culture side of things to hear from brothers and sisters from other parts

  11. of the world who are different from us.

  12. It was referred to as a day that changed the world forever.

  13. Tuesday 11th September 2001, there was a series of four coordinated suicide attacks by Al-Qaeda

  14. upon the United States.

  15. We know the outcome of it, 3,000 victims, 19 hijackers died on the attacks and it is infamously

  16. remembered today as the worst terrorist atrocity in human history.

  17. The overwhelming majority of the casualties were civilians including nationals from 70 different

  18. countries.

  19. And most of us can remember where we were in that moment when we heard that awful news

  20. when it reached us for the first time.

  21. I remember the moment vividly.

  22. I was rousing from sleep and my alarm clock had gone off and it was the news and all I caught

  23. in my half awake was the Twin Towers have collapsed.

  24. And I remember thinking, that's not right.

  25. I must have misheard that.

  26. That's not possible.

  27. And it was.

  28. Many things changed in the world on that day.

  29. One thing that particularly changed was it saw the rise in the West of the new atheism movement.

  30. A rejection of God.

  31. And many things changed on the day that Jesus arrived over 2,000 years ago.

  32. It's the very first sentence of Mark as we looked at last week.

  33. That the God who started history broke into history and everything changed.

  34. Mark begins with the beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.

  35. His style communicates, as I said last week, a sense of crisis.

  36. The status quo has now been ruptured.

  37. Mark wants us to see that this Jesus, as he did then, does now still calls for decisive action in our lives.

  38. And that decisive action is in the very first words that he speaks.

  39. Jesus speaks in Mark's gospel.

  40. Repent and believe the good news.

  41. That's what he calls from us.

  42. And the good news is another way of saying gospel, which literally means news that brings joy.

  43. And at the time of Mark, that word was used.

  44. It meant history-making, life-altering, shaping news.

  45. And that's what Christianity is.

  46. It's life-altering news.

  47. History-altering news.

  48. And the history-altering news of Christianity is that Jesus has come to bring us back to our maker, our creator, our God.

  49. He calls us to stop living lives as if we are the king of our lives.

  50. And to come to him and to have our lives orbit around him.

  51. Now, what we notice in the text today is that as soon as Jesus speaks about the kingdom of God,

  52. he calls and he calls people to repent and believe.

  53. He immediately starts choosing people to follow him.

  54. Initially, there's this core group of 12 and a bunch of other followers.

  55. And Mark records the first of these encounters from verse 16.

  56. So come with me in the text.

  57. As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake.

  58. For they were fishermen.

  59. Come, follow me, Jesus said.

  60. And I will send you out to fish for people.

  61. Now, what Jesus is doing here is somewhat unique in Jewish tradition.

  62. In Jewish tradition, pupils used to choose their rabbis, not rabbis, their pupils.

  63. And Mark is showing us that Jesus has a very different type of authority than your regular rabbi.

  64. You can't have a relationship with Jesus unless he calls you to himself.

  65. And there are two encounters here that are slightly different encounters.

  66. When he calls Simon and Andrew to follow him in verse 17,

  67. they leave their fishing nets and they follow him.

  68. That is, they leave their vocation and they follow him.

  69. Their livelihood and they follow him.

  70. When he calls James and John, they leave their father behind in the boat.

  71. That's the emphasis in that verse.

  72. They leave their father behind in the boat.

  73. These men, all of them who were called by Jesus in this moment,

  74. they did fish again and they did relate to their parents again.

  75. You can see that in the rest of Mark.

  76. But what Jesus is saying here in this first calling of these disciples is drastic.

  77. People with a heritage in traditional culture,

  78. like generally from Eastern societies,

  79. they get their identity from their family.

  80. And so when Jesus says,

  81. I want priority over your family,

  82. leave your father behind,

  83. he's saying something pretty drastic in that moment

  84. for those in those traditions.

  85. On the other hand,

  86. in an individualistic culture like the West,

  87. saying goodbye to your parents is not as big a deal.

  88. But for Jesus to say,

  89. I want priority over your career,

  90. your vocation,

  91. that's drastic.

  92. And Jesus is saying here that knowing him,

  93. loving him,

  94. resembling him,

  95. serving him,

  96. must become the supreme passion of your life.

  97. Everything else comes second.

  98. Everything else comes second.

  99. Now one of the things that changed in the Western world

  100. as a result of September 11,

  101. and apart from the rise of new atheism,

  102. was the fear of fanaticism,

  103. especially any kind of religious fanaticism.

  104. There was a fear of Islamic fanaticism

  105. prior to September 11,

  106. but it expanded to even Christian fanaticism

  107. in a growing secular culture.

  108. And there's good reason for that fear.

  109. Considerable violence is being carried out in this world

  110. by highly religious people.

  111. And even when you set aside that kind of religious fanaticism,

  112. we aren't short of examples

  113. of people who are very religious,

  114. and yet at the same time,

  115. they are condemning,

  116. they are self-righteous,

  117. and they are abusive.

  118. All the sort of things that we seek to work hard against

  119. here at St. Paul's.

  120. And so most people,

  121. particularly in the Western world,

  122. would see religion as a spectrum of belief.

  123. On one end,

  124. are people who say they are religious,

  125. but they don't really believe

  126. or live out the fundamentals

  127. of whatever it is,

  128. the religion that they say they believe.

  129. On the other end of the spectrum,

  130. are the fanatics.

  131. These are the people who are

  132. too religious.

  133. The people who kind of over-believe everything

  134. and over-live their faith.

  135. So you've got hypocrites at one end,

  136. and you've got fanatics at the other end.

  137. And many people think that the solution

  138. to the hypocrites and the fanatics

  139. is to meet in the middle.

  140. Moderation in all things.

  141. Moderation in everything.

  142. We can sit comfortably with moderation.

  143. Sort of.

  144. And clearly,

  145. Jesus hasn't heard about that option.

  146. In Luke 14,

  147. he says to a large crowd gathered,

  148. in verses 26 and 27, Luke 14,

  149. if anyone comes to me

  150. and does not hate his father and mother,

  151. wife and children,

  152. brothers and sisters,

  153. yes, even his own life,

  154. such a person cannot be my disciple.

  155. And whoever does not carry their cross

  156. and follow me

  157. cannot be my disciple.

  158. Now that

  159. doesn't sound moderate

  160. at all.

  161. Jesus says,

  162. if anyone

  163. comes to me,

  164. he doesn't say,

  165. all right,

  166. all right,

  167. look,

  168. consensus here,

  169. some of you can be moderate.

  170. Some of you can be moderate

  171. as my disciples,

  172. but I really do need

  173. a few good men

  174. and a few good women

  175. who are prepared to go all the way

  176. with this discipleship thing.

  177. I need the

  178. rah-rah of the Marines

  179. or so.

  180. I need a few of those.

  181. The rest of you can be moderate.

  182. He says,

  183. anyone,

  184. anyone,

  185. no double standards here,

  186. no double standards at all.

  187. If anyone wants to have anything

  188. to do with Jesus,

  189. you have to hate your father

  190. and your mother,

  191. your wife and your child,

  192. your brother and sister,

  193. even your own life.

  194. He says,

  195. otherwise you cannot be my disciple.

  196. That's what it means

  197. to follow Jesus.

  198. Now,

  199. that does seem a little bit

  200. contradictory to Jesus

  201. because

  202. a little bit later on,

  203. he says,

  204. you can't even hate your enemy.

  205. So what's he doing here?

  206. Telling you you hate your family,

  207. but don't hate your enemy.

  208. What's his problem with family?

  209. Until you realize that Jesus

  210. isn't actually calling us

  211. to hate actively,

  212. but he's actually calling us

  213. to hate comparatively.

  214. He's calling his disciples

  215. to follow him so fully,

  216. so intensely,

  217. so comprehensively,

  218. so enduringly,

  219. that every other

  220. entachment in life

  221. looks like hate

  222. in comparison.

  223. You see,

  224. when we say to Jesus,

  225. I'll obey you, Jesus,

  226. if and when my career thrives,

  227. or I'll obey you, Jesus,

  228. if and when my health

  229. is sorted out,

  230. or if and when,

  231. you know,

  232. I raise the kids,

  233. or I've paid off the house,

  234. then the thing

  235. that's on the other side

  236. of that if and when,

  237. that's your real master.

  238. That's your real God.

  239. That's your real Lord.

  240. It is your functional king.

  241. It is the goal of your life.

  242. Anything that puts Jesus

  243. to one side,

  244. and when I achieve this,

  245. Jesus,

  246. then I'll do that,

  247. then I'll follow you.

  248. That is your real master.

  249. That is your real Lord.

  250. And Jesus says,

  251. I will not be a means

  252. to an end.

  253. I will not be used.

  254. When he calls us to follow him,

  255. he alone must be the goal.

  256. Now that sounds like fanaticism.

  257. And it is,

  258. if you don't understand

  259. the difference between religion

  260. and the Christian gospel.

  261. Religion,

  262. as I said last week,

  263. is advice

  264. on how you must live life

  265. to earn your way to God.

  266. And the job

  267. of the adherent

  268. to religion

  269. is to follow the advice

  270. to the best

  271. of their ability.

  272. And if you do,

  273. you do follow it

  274. faithfully

  275. and completely,

  276. you'll believe

  277. that you will have

  278. a connection

  279. with that God.

  280. You'll feel a connection

  281. with that God

  282. because of how you lived

  283. and how you believed.

  284. And this inevitably

  285. leads to a feeling

  286. of superiority

  287. over

  288. other people

  289. who have

  290. different living standards

  291. and different belief.

  292. And once you have

  293. that position of pride,

  294. it is a slippery slope.

  295. When we feel

  296. superior to people,

  297. we tend to

  298. distance ourselves

  299. from people

  300. and when we distance

  301. ourselves from people,

  302. we start to exclude them,

  303. we start to hate them

  304. and we start to

  305. ultimately oppress them.

  306. And there are

  307. some Christians

  308. and there are

  309. some Christian groups

  310. who are just like that.

  311. But it's not

  312. because they've

  313. gone too far

  314. with Jesus.

  315. It's not because

  316. they're too committed

  317. to Jesus.

  318. It's because they haven't

  319. gone far enough

  320. with Jesus.

  321. It's because they haven't

  322. gone all the way

  323. with Jesus.

  324. They aren't

  325. as fanatically

  326. humble

  327. and sensitive

  328. or as fanatically

  329. understanding

  330. and generous

  331. as Jesus is.

  332. They are treating

  333. Christianity

  334. as if it was

  335. advice

  336. instead of news.

  337. You see,

  338. the good news,

  339. the Christian gospel

  340. is not advice.

  341. It is good news

  342. that you don't

  343. need to earn

  344. your way to God

  345. because Jesus

  346. has done it

  347. for you.

  348. It's a gift

  349. that we receive

  350. because of the sheer,

  351. may I say,

  352. astounding grace

  353. of God.

  354. That's what it is.

  355. It's the astounding

  356. grace of God

  357. as we just sang.

  358. And when we grab

  359. hold of that gift

  360. and continue

  361. to do so,

  362. then the call

  363. of Jesus

  364. in our lives,

  365. it won't lead

  366. to fanaticism,

  367. it won't lead

  368. to moderation

  369. and it won't lead

  370. to hypocrisy.

  371. The gospel

  372. leads us

  373. to passionately

  374. make Jesus

  375. our goal

  376. and our priority.

  377. It leads us

  378. to the point

  379. of humility

  380. and service

  381. of him

  382. and humility

  383. and service

  384. towards every other person.

  385. Our lives

  386. revolve around Jesus.

  387. Jesus doesn't

  388. revolve around

  389. our life.

  390. The gospel

  391. impact

  392. on our lives

  393. means that

  394. when we meet

  395. somebody

  396. with a different

  397. set of priorities,

  398. a different faith,

  399. we won't assume

  400. that they are

  401. inferior

  402. and deserving

  403. of our

  404. persecution,

  405. oppression

  406. and condemnation.

  407. Instead of

  408. oppressing them,

  409. we serve them.

  410. That's the difference

  411. the good news

  412. makes.

  413. Christianity

  414. is about being

  415. called to follow

  416. the king.

  417. It's not about

  418. choosing to follow

  419. advice.

  420. It's not about

  421. someone with

  422. the power

  423. and authority

  424. to tell you

  425. what needs

  426. to be done.

  427. It's about

  428. someone with

  429. the power

  430. and authority

  431. doing what

  432. needs to be done

  433. and then

  434. offering it

  435. to us

  436. as good

  437. news.

  438. And Jesus

  439. has that

  440. authority.

  441. As we saw

  442. last week

  443. at Jesus'

  444. baptism,

  445. there was a

  446. display of

  447. supernatural signs

  448. which announced

  449. his divine

  450. authority.

  451. And Jesus

  452. calls on the

  453. lives of

  454. Simon,

  455. Andrew,

  456. James and

  457. John.

  458. When he calls

  459. their life,

  460. he has authority

  461. to call

  462. them.

  463. They

  464. followed him

  465. without delay.

  466. We see

  467. that Jesus

  468. has authority

  469. over all

  470. of life.

  471. Mark uses

  472. the word

  473. authority

  474. for the first

  475. time in

  476. verses 22

  477. to 23.

  478. They went

  479. to Capernaum

  480. and when

  481. the Sabbath

  482. came,

  483. Jesus went

  484. into the

  485. synagogue

  486. and began

  487. to teach.

  488. The people

  489. were amazed

  490. at his

  491. teaching

  492. because he

  493. taught them

  494. as one

  495. who had

  496. authority,

  497. not as

  498. the teachers

  499. of the law.

  500. Now the

  501. word authority

  502. means out

  503. of the

  504. original

  505. stuff.

  506. The word

  507. stuff is

  508. my, you

  509. know,

  510. version in

  511. there.

  512. Out of the

  513. original

  514. stuff.

  515. It has

  516. the same

  517. origin as

  518. the word

  519. author,

  520. the author

  521. of life,

  522. the maker

  523. of life,

  524. the one

  525. who made

  526. all stuff.

  527. And Mark

  528. means that

  529. Jesus taught

  530. about life

  531. with original

  532. authority.

  533. Jesus didn't

  534. simply clarify

  535. something that

  536. someone else

  537. had already

  538. said or

  539. knew about.

  540. He didn't

  541. simply interpret

  542. the Bible

  543. in a way

  544. that the

  545. Jewish

  546. authorities

  547. hadn't

  548. interpreted

  549. the Bible.

  550. It's like

  551. he was the

  552. original

  553. source.

  554. It's like

  555. they sensed

  556. with Jesus

  557. that he

  558. was explaining

  559. the story

  560. of their

  561. lives as

  562. if he

  563. was the

  564. one who

  565. wrote the

  566. story.

  567. And

  568. they

  569. were

  570. amazed

  571. by it.

  572. Because he

  573. is the

  574. author of

  575. life.

  576. He's the

  577. king of

  578. life.

  579. You read

  580. on and we

  581. see that

  582. Jesus'

  583. authority

  584. extends

  585. even further.

  586. Verse 23

  587. to 27.

  588. It just

  589. takes his

  590. authority to

  591. the next

  592. level.

  593. We have

  594. the voice

  595. of the

  596. Father

  597. confirming the

  598. identity of

  599. Jesus at

  600. his

  601. baptism.

  602. He is

  603. his much

  604. loved

  605. son.

  606. And now

  607. we have a

  608. different

  609. voice.

  610. And

  611. anybody who

  612. hates Jesus

  613. in verse

  614. 26

  615. likewise

  616. confirms the

  617. identity of

  618. Jesus.

  619. What do you

  620. want with us

  621. Jesus of

  622. Nazareth?

  623. Have you

  624. come to

  625. destroy us?

  626. I know who

  627. you are,

  628. the Holy

  629. One of

  630. God.

  631. evil

  632. spirits who

  633. love

  634. darkness

  635. recoil from

  636. light.

  637. And it's

  638. very possible

  639. to recognize

  640. Jesus for

  641. who he is

  642. and yet

  643. hate him

  644. even the

  645. more,

  646. which is

  647. what we

  648. see here.

  649. This man

  650. wanted nothing

  651. to do with

  652. Jesus.

  653. The demon

  654. shriek was

  655. full of

  656. malevolent

  657. aggression.

  658. His opening

  659. burst,

  660. what do you

  661. want with us

  662. Jesus of

  663. Nazareth?

  664. was a

  665. common Old

  666. Testament

  667. formula which

  668. is roughly

  669. equivalent to

  670. you have no

  671. business with

  672. us yet.

  673. Evil spirits

  674. wanted to

  675. say to

  676. Jesus,

  677. go away,

  678. the time

  679. has not

  680. yet come,

  681. go away.

  682. And the

  683. next phrase

  684. which is

  685. stated as a

  686. question,

  687. have you

  688. come to

  689. destroy us,

  690. is actually,

  691. in actual

  692. fact,

  693. a defiant

  694. assertion.

  695. You have

  696. come to

  697. destroy us.

  698. You see,

  699. this demon

  700. realized the

  701. menace of

  702. Christ and

  703. cried out

  704. with an

  705. instinctive

  706. expression of

  707. dread.

  708. He wanted

  709. Jesus to

  710. disappear for

  711. he knew that

  712. Jesus would

  713. in fact

  714. destroy him.

  715. But note

  716. what he does

  717. in verse 24,

  718. it's his final

  719. cry out.

  720. This is

  721. dramatic.

  722. I know

  723. who you

  724. are,

  725. the Holy

  726. One of

  727. God.

  728. Now on

  729. one level,

  730. that appears

  731. to be a

  732. submissive

  733. acknowledgement

  734. of who

  735. Jesus is,

  736. but it's

  737. in fact

  738. a frantic

  739. attempt to

  740. bring the

  741. Lord Jesus

  742. under his

  743. power.

  744. power.

  745. We know

  746. that because

  747. the idea

  748. was widespread

  749. at the

  750. time that

  751. the exact

  752. knowledge of

  753. the other's

  754. name brought

  755. mastery and

  756. control over

  757. them.

  758. And that is

  759. what this evil

  760. spirit is

  761. attempting to

  762. do.

  763. It's an

  764. ill-informed

  765. attempt to

  766. control Jesus

  767. just as

  768. Satan had

  769. attempted to

  770. do in the

  771. wilderness just

  772. before this.

  773. And Jesus,

  774. rather than

  775. submits to

  776. the evil

  777. spirit,

  778. demands that

  779. the man be

  780. quiet,

  781. literally be

  782. muzzled,

  783. and the

  784. unclean

  785. spirit come

  786. out of

  787. him.

  788. The evil

  789. spirit was

  790. powerful enough

  791. to control

  792. this man,

  793. but not

  794. Jesus.

  795. And he

  796. did just

  797. what Jesus

  798. told him to

  799. do in

  800. that instant.

  801. Jesus spoke

  802. and this

  803. evil spirit

  804. obeyed.

  805. See,

  806. Jesus is

  807. king over

  808. the spiritual

  809. realm.

  810. He has an

  811. unmatched

  812. authority.

  813. People were

  814. starting to

  815. notice it.

  816. Wherever Jesus

  817. went,

  818. people were

  819. amazed at

  820. his teaching

  821. and his

  822. actions.

  823. Even the

  824. evil spirits

  825. obey him.

  826. Wherever he

  827. went,

  828. crowds were

  829. forming.

  830. Fuss was

  831. being made

  832. about Jesus.

  833. And so

  834. why did

  835. Jesus tell

  836. this evil

  837. spirit,

  838. be quiet?

  839. And down

  840. in verse

  841. 34,

  842. it says,

  843. he also

  844. drove out

  845. many demons,

  846. but he

  847. would not

  848. let the

  849. demons

  850. speak because

  851. they knew

  852. who he

  853. was.

  854. Why do

  855. that?

  856. Why tell

  857. them to be

  858. quiet?

  859. Is it just

  860. an effort

  861. to,

  862. you know,

  863. divine

  864. crowd control?

  865. Why doesn't

  866. he take

  867. advantage of

  868. his incredible

  869. popularity?

  870. Why not

  871. generate more

  872. appeal to

  873. who he is

  874. and his

  875. message?

  876. That's what

  877. I would

  878. have done.

  879. You know,

  880. challenge me

  881. evil spirit,

  882. get out,

  883. evil spirit

  884. goes,

  885. you know,

  886. who's your

  887. daddy?

  888. I'd be

  889. high-fiving and

  890. chest-pumping

  891. with the

  892. disciples.

  893. Till

  894. everyone

  895. thieves in

  896. town.

  897. That's what

  898. I'd do.

  899. Not

  900. Jesus.

  901. And the

  902. key is

  903. in verse

  904. 26.

  905. The

  906. impure

  907. spirit

  908. shook the

  909. man

  910. violently

  911. and came

  912. out of

  913. him with

  914. a shriek.

  915. There's

  916. one other

  917. place in

  918. Mark's

  919. gospel

  920. where that

  921. sentence is

  922. almost exactly

  923. reproduced.

  924. it's in

  925. Mark 15

    Mark 15:37

  926. verse 37

  927. and it

  928. describes the

  929. death of

  930. Jesus

  931. with a

  932. loud cry.

  933. Jesus

  934. breathed

  935. his last.

  936. Literally,

  937. his spirit

  938. was

  939. expelled.

  940. What

  941. Jesus knew

  942. was that

  943. the only

  944. way that

  945. he would

  946. ever silence

  947. the demons

  948. was to

  949. allow himself

  950. to be

  951. silenced.

  952. The way

  953. to

  954. wield

  955. his

  956. true

  957. authority

  958. was not

  959. to parade

  960. it around

  961. and brandish

  962. it

  963. but simply

  964. to give

  965. it up.

  966. To give

  967. it up.

  968. No

  969. convulsing,

  970. no

  971. struggling,

  972. no

  973. thrashing

  974. but simply

  975. to give

  976. it up.

  977. To steal

  978. the spirits

  979. he would

  980. have to

  981. give up

  982. his

  983. own.

  984. His

  985. wasn't

  986. involuntarily

  987. driven out,

  988. it was

  989. voluntarily

  990. given up

  991. and everything

  992. in this

  993. passage that

  994. we see

  995. is but

  996. a skirmish

  997. to prepare

  998. for the

  999. last and

  1000. great battle

  1001. that Jesus

  1002. was to win,

  1003. to utterly

  1004. destroy the

  1005. power of

  1006. sin and

  1007. death by

  1008. taking the

  1009. death and

  1010. the sin

  1011. that is

  1012. ours and

  1013. upon

  1014. himself.

  1015. Jesus

  1016. himself does

  1017. everything that

  1018. he calls

  1019. us to do

  1020. and so

  1021. when he

  1022. calls

  1023. James and

  1024. John to

  1025. leave their

  1026. father in

  1027. the boat,

  1028. he's already

  1029. left his

  1030. father's side

  1031. and his

  1032. father will

  1033. turn his

  1034. back on

  1035. him later.

  1036. Charles

  1037. Wesley captured

  1038. that thought

  1039. well in

  1040. the him

  1041. and can

  1042. it be,

  1043. he left

  1044. his father's

  1045. throne above

  1046. so free,

  1047. so infinite

  1048. his grace.

  1049. Later in

  1050. this gospel

  1051. he's going

  1052. to be ripped

  1053. from his

  1054. father's

  1055. presence on

  1056. the cross.

  1057. You see,

  1058. his kingship

  1059. is a

  1060. kingship over

  1061. sickness,

  1062. sin,

  1063. death,

  1064. oppression.

  1065. His

  1066. kingship is

  1067. not a

  1068. fanatic.

  1069. He doesn't

  1070. wield his

  1071. authority as

  1072. a fanatic

  1073. who seeks

  1074. to condemn

  1075. and oppress.

  1076. He doesn't

  1077. wield his

  1078. authority in

  1079. a totalitarian

  1080. way.

  1081. Jesus Christ's

  1082. kingship is

  1083. not designed

  1084. to crush.

  1085. It is the

  1086. ultimate

  1087. authority and

  1088. it's not

  1089. designed to

  1090. crush or

  1091. oppress.

  1092. His

  1093. authority is

  1094. wielded to

  1095. serve and

  1096. to restore.

  1097. take a

  1098. look at

  1099. verses 30

  1100. and 31

  1101. with me.

  1102. Simon's

  1103. mother-in-law

  1104. was in

  1105. bed with a

  1106. fever and

  1107. they immediately

  1108. told Jesus

  1109. about her.

  1110. And so he

  1111. went to her,

  1112. took her

  1113. hand,

  1114. he helped

  1115. her up and

  1116. the fever

  1117. left her and

  1118. she began to

  1119. wait on them.

  1120. She was sick

  1121. with a fever

  1122. and Jesus

  1123. came to her

  1124. still and

  1125. touched her

  1126. still and

  1127. then it

  1128. says he

  1129. helped her

  1130. up.

  1131. He

  1132. literally

  1133. raised her

  1134. and

  1135. everywhere in

  1136. Mark's

  1137. gospel when

  1138. someone is

  1139. healed,

  1140. the exact

  1141. same word

  1142. is used

  1143. everywhere,

  1144. right through

  1145. it,

  1146. every

  1147. encounter,

  1148. raised.

  1149. And it's

  1150. the exact

  1151. same word

  1152. which is

  1153. used to

  1154. describe the

  1155. resurrection

  1156. of Jesus.

  1157. In other

  1158. words,

  1159. when Jesus

  1160. demonstrates his

  1161. authority,

  1162. healing the

  1163. sick,

  1164. freeing the

  1165. captives,

  1166. casting out

  1167. demons,

  1168. it

  1169. resurrects,

  1170. it restores,

  1171. it brings

  1172. to life.

  1173. His

  1174. authority

  1175. isn't

  1176. oppressive,

  1177. it doesn't

  1178. subjugate,

  1179. it doesn't

  1180. crush,

  1181. it literally

  1182. breathes

  1183. new life,

  1184. a new

  1185. spirit

  1186. into.

  1187. His is

  1188. expelled and

  1189. he breathes

  1190. new life

  1191. into,

  1192. to heal,

  1193. to restore,

  1194. to set

  1195. free.

  1196. And when

  1197. we understand

  1198. the good

  1199. news and

  1200. submit to

  1201. the authority,

  1202. that's what

  1203. it does.

  1204. His authority

  1205. sets you

  1206. free.

  1207. It raises

  1208. you.

  1209. sets you

  1210. free to

  1211. serve as

  1212. we have

  1213. been served

  1214. by God.

  1215. Fanatical

  1216. serving of

  1217. God and

  1218. of others.

  1219. Notice

  1220. what Simon's

  1221. mother-in-law

  1222. does.

  1223. The fever

  1224. left her

  1225. and she

  1226. began to

  1227. wait on

  1228. them.

  1229. Now,

  1230. the skeptical

  1231. amongst us

  1232. might say,

  1233. well,

  1234. Jesus did

  1235. that because

  1236. he was

  1237. hungry and

  1238. he needed

  1239. someone to

  1240. cook the

  1241. meal.

  1242. Okay.

  1243. She began

  1244. to serve

  1245. them.

  1246. She wasn't

  1247. healed.

  1248. Notice what

  1249. doesn't say

  1250. that.

  1251. She wasn't

  1252. healed,

  1253. she wasn't

  1254. raised and

  1255. then went

  1256. about her

  1257. own business.

  1258. She got

  1259. up and

  1260. she served.

  1261. She gave

  1262. herself to

  1263. others.

  1264. She didn't

  1265. get raised

  1266. and then

  1267. go,

  1268. ah,

  1269. all those

  1270. things that

  1271. I wanted

  1272. to do

  1273. while I

  1274. was sick

  1275. and potentially

  1276. dying.

  1277. I didn't

  1278. my bucket

  1279. list,

  1280. I better

  1281. get on

  1282. and do

  1283. it.

  1284. She gave

  1285. herself to

  1286. others.

  1287. See,

  1288. when we

  1289. grasp the

  1290. good news

  1291. and we

  1292. submit to

  1293. the authority

  1294. of Jesus

  1295. and have

  1296. our lives

  1297. orbit around

  1298. Jesus,

  1299. it sets

  1300. us free

  1301. from all

  1302. other selfish

  1303. authorities that

  1304. crush us

  1305. and enslave

  1306. us.

  1307. you see,

  1308. Jesus'

  1309. authority

  1310. gives us

  1311. a new

  1312. set of

  1313. priorities,

  1314. a new

  1315. life of

  1316. service,

  1317. a life of

  1318. hospitality,

  1319. a life of

  1320. generosity,

  1321. a life of

  1322. community

  1323. building,

  1324. a life of

  1325. meeting the

  1326. needs of

  1327. others,

  1328. a life of

  1329. fanatical

  1330. humility and

  1331. grace.

  1332. That's what

  1333. it does.

  1334. and every

  1335. act of

  1336. uttered,

  1337. done in

  1338. the name

  1339. of

  1340. Christianity

  1341. that is

  1342. opposite to

  1343. that

  1344. is not

  1345. Christianity,

  1346. has nothing

  1347. to do with

  1348. Jesus and

  1349. it's not

  1350. done in

  1351. the name

  1352. of Jesus

  1353. at all.

  1354. A life of

  1355. fanatical

  1356. humility and

  1357. grace,

  1358. everything that

  1359. God created

  1360. and intended

  1361. for us to

  1362. be and do,

  1363. not because

  1364. we've got

  1365. something to

  1366. pay back or

  1367. because the

  1368. authority is

  1369. enslaving,

  1370. we do it

  1371. simply because

  1372. like Simon's

  1373. mother-in-law,

  1374. we have been

  1375. raised and

  1376. we now

  1377. can.

  1378. We now

  1379. can.
