  1. If you have a Bible, please turn with me to Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  2. If you don't have one, you can put your hand up and we'll have someone give you a Bible.

  3. Today I'll be preaching in English, so if you want to make sure you know what I say,

  4. we actually have an English transcript so they can read along as well,

  5. just in case my accent's too strong for you.

  6. And if you need Chinese translation, we also have that prepared for you as well.

  7. We have been looking into the Gospel according to Mark in the last few weeks,

  8. which is the good news about Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God.

  9. Messiah is referring to the person expected by the Jews to come and set them free.

  10. The Jews were told about the Messiah when they go to the temple,

  11. and they hear it from the teachers of the law.

  12. This is a very important point of today's sermon.

  13. We have only looked at two chapters of Mark,

  14. and already we can see a lot of events have happened,

  15. and people were amazed at what Jesus has said and done.

  16. As today's passage points out,

  17. Jesus was drawing a large crowd of people wherever he goes.

  18. In verse 7 to 8 it says,

  19. As Jesus' popularity grew,

  20. we can also see that sentiment of resentment and opposition

  21. is growing among a group of people.

  22. They were the teachers of law,

  23. the religious heathies.

  24. Their resentment most likely started back from Mark 1.22,

  25. because people were comparing them with Jesus.

  26. The people were amazed at his teaching,

  27. because he taught them as one who had authority,

  28. not as the teachers of the law.

  29. What Jesus said and done has a direct impact to the teachers of the law,

  30. because his arrival will fill their spiritual condition in their heart.

  31. Jesus is pointing out something that is different to what they have been teaching.

  32. Jesus wants everyone to go deeper to understand their spiritual needs,

  33. because in Matthew it says,

  34. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  35. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  36. Today, let's go deeper to find out who belongs to the kingdom of heaven,

  37. who belongs to this new community of the king.

  38. At the beginning of chapter 2,

  39. Jesus was setting up a showdown with the religious heathies.

  40. Steve was reminding us that last week.

  41. This showdown is necessary

  42. because the teachers of the law

  43. were the link between God and his people.

  44. We can even say that they present themselves

  45. as an earthly representation of God

  46. before Jesus came into the scene.

  47. From the showdown between Jesus,

  48. we can see that they are misrepresenting

  49. and giving out wrong information

  50. about who belongs to the kingdom of heaven.

  51. They were busy concerning about things

  52. that weren't that most important.

  53. When they challenged Jesus about blaspheming,

  54. showing that they're concerned about

  55. whether one is saying the right thing at the right time.

  56. When they challenged Jesus about fasting,

  57. showing that they're concerned whether tradition and ritual

  58. have been followed.

  59. When they challenged Jesus about his disciples picking grain,

  60. so that they would suppress basic human needs

  61. to ensure law has not been broken.

  62. Their interpretation of what the law said

  63. was far from accurate,

  64. because when the teachers of the law promoting,

  65. what the teachers of the law promoting

  66. is you belong to the kingdom of God

  67. based on how well you follow the law,

  68. how religious you are,

  69. as if you can get into heaven by your own efforts.

  70. What they're promoting is

  71. if you look right from the outside,

  72. you'll be right with God.

  73. All of their concerns are superficial.

  74. Mark, we call it in chapter 12, 38,

  75. it says,

  76. as he taught,

  77. Jesus said,

  78. watch out for the teachers of the law.

  79. They like to walk around in floating robes

  80. and be greeted with respect in the marketplace

  81. and have the most important seat in the synagogue

  82. and place of honor at banquet.

  83. If you read how Matthew recorded

  84. about the teachers of the law,

  85. you would think that Mark had been very kind to them.

  86. In Matthew 3,

  87. while talking about John the Baptist in verse 7,

  88. it said,

  89. They think that they belong to the kingdom of God

  90. because they are in the right bloodline.

  91. They have Abraham as their ancestor.

  92. Jesus had this to say to them in Matthew 23,

  93. starting in verse 2,

  94. The teachers of the law and Pharisee

  95. sit in Moses' seat,

  96. so you must be careful to do everything they tell you,

  97. but do not do what they do,

  98. for they do not practice what they preach.

  99. They tied up heavy,

  100. cumbersome loads

  101. and put them on others' shoulders,

  102. but they themselves are not willing

  103. to lift a finger to move them.

  104. Jesus' fall in verse 13,

  105. lay out some roles.

  106. Woe to you,

  107. teachers of the law and Pharisee,

  108. you hypocrites!

  109. You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven

  110. in people's face.

  111. You yourself do not enter,

  112. nor will you let those enter

  113. who are trying to.

  114. On the outside,

  115. you are pleased to people as righteous,

  116. but on the inside,

  117. you are full of hypocrites and wickedness.

  118. Jesus said clearly that

  119. because they do not practice what they teach,

  120. appear to be righteous only on the outside,

  121. they do not enter the kingdom of heaven.

  122. They are misrepresenting God

  123. and misrepresenting who belongs to the kingdom of God.

  124. And the worst misrepresentation

  125. is in our passage today,

  126. in Mark 3.22,

  127. when they say that

  128. Jesus is possessed by demons

  129. and is driving out demons

  130. by the prince of demons.

  131. For their knowledge,

  132. they should know who Jesus is,

  133. but they speak against him.

  134. They thought they were speaking against Jesus,

  135. but in fact,

  136. they are speaking against God.

  137. They are speaking against God

  138. because they do not believe who Jesus is,

  139. which means they do not believe

  140. in God who sent Jesus.

  141. When we are looking at this passage,

  142. when Mark mentioned about this incident,

  143. he seems to have interrupted

  144. what he was saying

  145. in verse 20 to 21.

  146. If you turn there and have a look,

  147. Mark was talking about Jesus and his family

  148. in that two verses,

  149. but he jumped on to the incident

  150. between Jesus and the teachers of the law,

  151. especially this group of people from Jerusalem,

  152. between verse 22 and 30.

  153. He then jumped back to Jesus' interaction

  154. with his family

  155. in verse 31 to 35.

  156. Mark did this on purpose

  157. to show us that there is something similar

  158. between the teachers of the law

  159. and Jesus' family.

  160. Let's read again from 22 to 21,

  161. and then we go down to 31 to 33

  162. to go deeper into this issue.

  163. Verse 20,

  164. Then Jesus entered a house

  165. and began a crowd gathered

  166. so that he and his disciples

  167. were not even able to eat.

  168. When his family heard about this,

  169. they went to take charge of him,

  170. for they said,

  171. he is out of his mind.

  172. 31,

  173. Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived.

  174. Sending outside,

  175. they sent someone in to call him.

  176. A crowd was sitting around him

  177. and they told him,

  178. your mother and brothers

  179. are outside looking for you.

  180. Who are my mothers and my brothers?

  181. He asked.

  182. Who are my mothers and my brothers?

  183. He asked.

  184. Such shocking words

  185. to have said to your family,

  186. especially to a Hebrew family

  187. that placed so much value

  188. in their family tradition.

  189. Where their sense of worth,

  190. their personal value,

  191. ties tightly

  192. with what approval they get

  193. from their family.

  194. With culture,

  195. their emphasis collective value,

  196. such as most of Asian

  197. and African culture,

  198. Greek and Italian

  199. and Middle Eastern,

  200. and sometimes even some Australian

  201. when they say,

  202. your home is a castle.

  203. You guys know where they're from.

  204. That shows how old I am.

  205. This is unthinkable

  206. that Jesus gave such a reply.

  207. I said that Mark

  208. had inserted this incident

  209. about the teachers of the law

  210. from Jerusalem

  211. to indicate

  212. there's some similarity

  213. between them and the family.

  214. Family often thinks

  215. that they have privileged access

  216. to their family member.

  217. So Jesus' mother and brothers

  218. waited outside,

  219. waiting for people

  220. to make way for them

  221. to get in.

  222. The older or senior members

  223. often think that

  224. they know better

  225. and they took on

  226. an authoritative position

  227. and they will not listen

  228. or will not

  229. not willing to listen.

  230. Scenorality,

  231. the ranking order

  232. determines who have

  233. the final say

  234. and decide

  235. who should be followed

  236. or who should lead.

  237. A lot of emphasis

  238. has been put on

  239. the outside adherence

  240. of family reputation

  241. concerning only

  242. the outside appearance.

  243. It's often very hard

  244. to convince family member

  245. of anything

  246. because they think

  247. they know better.

  248. The most similar thing

  249. between the teachers

  250. of the law

  251. and the family

  252. is they both

  253. do not believe

  254. who Jesus said

  255. who he really is.

  256. Verse 21 said

  257. that Jesus' family

  258. think he is

  259. out of his mind.

  260. He had gone mad.

  261. Verse 22 say

  262. that the teachers

  263. of the law

  264. think that Jesus

  265. is a bad person

  266. and uses demon

  267. to achieve

  268. his popularity.

  269. They both have

  270. the wrong response

  271. to Jesus

  272. which means

  273. they sat

  274. at the outside circle

  275. instead of

  276. the inside circle

  277. of God.

  278. after Jesus

  279. asked that

  280. unthinkable question

  281. he provided

  282. the answer

  283. in verse 34

  284. to 35.

  285. Then

  286. he looked at

  287. those seated

  288. in a circle

  289. around him

  290. and said

  291. here are my

  292. mothers

  293. and here

  294. are my

  295. mother

  296. and my brothers

  297. whoever

  298. does God's will

  299. is my

  300. brother

  301. and sister

  302. and mother.

  303. to those

  304. seated in a circle

  305. around him

  306. here are my

  307. mother

  308. and my brothers.

  309. Who are these

  310. people?

  311. We know

  312. from earlier

  313. in the passage

  314. that these

  315. are his

  316. disciples.

  317. These are

  318. people that

  319. he called

  320. and came

  321. to him.

  322. In Mark

  323. 3 13

  324. Jesus went

  325. out on a

  326. mountainside

  327. and called

  328. to him

  329. those he

  330. wanted

  331. and they

  332. came to

  333. him.

  334. We were

  335. given

  336. account of

  337. how five

  338. out of

  339. these

  340. twelve

  341. disciples

  342. that

  343. Jesus

  344. had

  345. chosen

  346. were

  347. called

  348. and how

  349. they

  350. responded

  351. at the

  352. time

  353. they

  354. were

  355. called.

  356. So

  357. let's

  358. go back

  359. and look

  360. at it

  361. again.

  362. From

  363. chapter 1

  364. verse 16

  365. chapter 1

  366. verse 16

  367. as Jesus

  368. walked beside

  369. the sea

  370. of Galilee

  371. he saw

  372. Simon

  373. and his

  374. Peter

  375. Andrew

  376. casting a

  377. net into

  378. the lake

  379. for they

  380. were fishermen.

  381. Come

  382. follow me

  383. Jesus said

  384. and I

  385. will send

  386. you out

  387. to fish

  388. for people.

  389. At once

  390. they left

  391. the net

  392. and followed

  393. him.

  394. When he

  395. had gone

  396. a little

  397. farther

  398. he saw

  399. James

  400. son of

  401. Zebedee

  402. and his

  403. brother

  404. John

  405. in a

  406. boat

  407. preparing

  408. their

  409. nets.

  410. Without

  411. delay

  412. he

  413. called

  414. them

  415. and they

  416. left

  417. their

  418. father

  419. Zebedee

  420. in a

  421. boat

  422. with

  423. the

  424. high

  425. man

  426. and

  427. followed

  428. him.

  429. After

  430. that

  431. we

  432. were

  433. reminded

  434. that

  435. Simon's

  436. mother

  437. was

  438. sick

  439. and

  440. after

  441. Jesus

  442. raised

  443. her

  444. from

  445. the

  446. sickness

  447. she

  448. started

  449. to

  450. serve

  451. them.

  452. Then

  453. we

  454. go to

  455. chapter 2

  456. chapter

  457. 2

  458. verse

  459. 13

  460. Once

  461. again

  462. Jesus

  463. went

  464. out

  465. beside

  466. the

  467. lake

  468. a

  469. large

  470. crowd

  471. come

  472. to

  473. him

  474. and

  475. he

  476. began

  477. to

  478. teach

  479. them.

  480. As

  481. he

  482. walked

  483. along

  484. he

  485. saw

  486. Levi

  487. son

  488. of

  489. Alphaeus

  490. sitting

  491. at

  492. the

  493. test

  494. called

  495. Letters

  496. booth.

  497. Follow

  498. me

  499. Jesus

  500. told

  501. him

  502. and

  503. Levi

  504. got

  505. up

  506. and

  507. followed

  508. him.

  509. Levi

  510. was

  511. so

  512. eager

  513. to

  514. introduce

  515. Jesus

  516. and

  517. his

  518. disciples

  519. to

  520. his

  521. friends.

  522. He

  523. holds

  524. a

  525. dinner

  526. at

  527. his

  528. house

  529. afterward.

  530. Their

  531. response

  532. was

  533. immediate.

  534. They

  535. stripped

  536. away,

  537. put

  538. aside

  539. their

  540. career

  541. and

  542. livelihood

  543. as

  544. well as

  545. their

  546. family

  547. to

  548. respond

  549. to

  550. Jesus'

  551. call.

  552. They

  553. did

  554. not

  555. look at

  556. Jesus

  557. and

  558. think

  559. that

  560. he

  561. is

  562. a

  563. mad

  564. man.

  565. And

  566. they

  567. did

  568. not

  569. look

  570. at

  571. Jesus

  572. and

  573. think

  574. that

  575. he

  576. is

  577. a

  578. bad

  579. man.

  580. They

  581. had

  582. the

  583. right

  584. response.

  585. They

  586. looked at

  587. Jesus

  588. as

  589. someone

  590. they

  591. can

  592. entrust

  593. their

  594. life.

  595. They

  596. put

  597. aside

  598. everything

  599. to

  600. follow

  601. and

  602. to

  603. serve

  604. him.

  605. At

  606. the

  607. time

  608. of

  609. their

  610. response,

  611. they

  612. were not

  613. yet

  614. exactly

  615. sure

  616. he

  617. is

  618. the

  619. Messiah,

  620. but

  621. they

  622. came

  623. along

  624. and

  625. they

  626. see

  627. for

  628. themselves.

  629. In

  630. verse

  631. 14

  632. said,

  633. they

  634. were

  635. called

  636. so

  637. that

  638. they

  639. will

  640. call

  641. so

  642. that

  643. they

  644. will

  645. be

  646. with

  647. Jesus

  648. and

  649. that

  650. he

  651. might

  652. send

  653. them

  654. out

  655. to

  656. preach

  657. and

  658. to

  659. have

  660. authority

  661. to

  662. drive

  663. out

  664. demons.

  665. As

  666. they

  667. respond

  668. to

  669. Jesus

  670. calling,

  671. they

  672. are

  673. willing

  674. to

  675. let

  676. Jesus

  677. be

  678. the

  679. center

  680. of

  681. their

  682. life

  683. and

  684. live

  685. their

  686. life

  687. circling

  688. Jesus.

  689. Because

  690. they

  691. have

  692. the

  693. right

  694. response,

  695. they

  696. are

  697. seated

  698. in

  699. a

  700. circle

  701. around

  702. him.

  703. Who

  704. are

  705. my

  706. mother

  707. and

  708. brothers

  709. and

  710. brothers

  711. and

  712. brothers

  713. and

  714. brothers

  715. and

  716. brothers

  717. and

  718. brothers

  719. and

  720. mother.

  721. So

  722. what is

  723. the

  724. will

  725. of

  726. God?

  727. In

  728. 2 Peter

  729. 3,

  730. 9,

  731. often

  732. when we

  733. have

  734. communion,

  735. we

  736. actually

  737. talk

  738. about

  739. these

  740. verses.

  741. It

  742. says

  743. that

  744. God

  745. is

  746. patient

  747. with

  748. you,

  749. not

  750. wanting

  751. anyone

  752. to

  753. perish,

  754. but

  755. everyone

  756. to

  757. come

  758. to

  759. repentance.

  760. In

  761. Jesus'

  762. very

  763. first

  764. word

  765. in

  766. Mark,

  767. also

  768. reiterated

  769. the

  770. will

  771. of

  772. God.

  773. The

  774. time

  775. has

  776. come,

  777. the

  778. kingdom

  779. of

  780. God

  781. has

  782. come

  783. near,

  784. repent

  785. and

  786. believe

  787. in

  788. the

  789. good

  790. news.

  791. God

  792. has

  793. been

  794. patient

  795. in

  796. waiting

  797. for

  798. us

  799. to

  800. come

  801. to

  802. a

  803. right

  804. response

  805. to

  806. who

  807. Jesus

  808. really

  809. is.

  810. He

  811. warned

  812. everyone

  813. to

  814. come

  815. to

  816. repentance,

  817. to

  818. have

  819. us

  820. seated

  821. in

  822. a

  823. circle

  824. around

  825. him,

  826. to

  827. listen

  828. to

  829. his

  830. teaching

  831. and

  832. to

  833. have

  834. life

  835. circle

  836. around

  837. him.

  838. Who

  839. belongs

  840. to

  841. the

  842. kingdom

  843. of

  844. God?

  845. Those

  846. that

  847. have

  848. the

  849. right

  850. response

  851. will

  852. be

  853. in

  854. it.

  855. The

  856. right

  857. response

  858. is

  859. to

  860. believe

  861. and

  862. follow

  863. him.

  864. The

  865. right

  866. response

  867. is

  868. to

  869. listen

  870. to

  871. his

  872. teaching.

  873. The

  874. right

  875. response

  876. is

  877. to

  878. obey

  879. the

  880. will

  881. of

  882. God.

  883. The

  884. right

  885. response

  886. is

  887. to

  888. repent

  889. and

  890. believe

  891. in

  892. the

  893. good

  894. news

  895. of

  896. the

  897. kingdom

  898. of

  899. heaven.

  900. Having

  901. the

  902. right

  903. to

  904. respond

  905. will

  906. get

  907. into

  908. the

  909. community

  910. of

  911. Jesus.

  912. It

  913. sounds

  914. so

  915. simple,

  916. isn't

  917. it?

  918. But

  919. it's

  920. that

  921. simple

  922. because

  923. God

  924. has

  925. done

  926. all

  927. the

  928. works

  929. and

  930. fulfilled

  931. all

  932. the

  933. requirements

  934. for

  935. us

  936. through

  937. Jesus.

  938. In

  939. our

  940. passage

  941. today,

  942. we're

  943. in the

  944. middle,

  945. in

  946. chapter

  947. 27,

  948. it

  949. says,

  950. no one

  951. can

  952. enter

  953. a

  954. strong

  955. man's

  956. house

  957. without

  958. first

  959. tying

  960. him

  961. up.

  962. Then

  963. he

  964. can

  965. plunder

  966. the

  967. strong

  968. man's

  969. house.

  970. Through

  971. Jesus,

  972. God

  973. has

  974. already

  975. tied

  976. up

  977. Satan,

  978. the

  979. one

  980. that

  981. we

  982. think

  983. is

  984. strong.

  985. It's

  986. impossible

  987. to

  988. try to

  989. get

  990. into

  991. the

  992. community

  993. of

  994. Jesus

  995. in

  996. your

  997. own

  998. effort

  999. by

  1000. being

  1001. religious

  1002. or

  1003. by

  1004. relying

  1005. on

  1006. your

  1007. lineage.

  1008. God

  1009. made

  1010. the

  1011. impossible

  1012. possible

  1013. in

  1014. Jesus.

  1015. Believe

  1016. in

  1017. him

  1018. is

  1019. all

  1020. we

  1021. need

  1022. to

  1023. be

  1024. part

  1025. of

  1026. heaven.

  1027. Believe

  1028. Jesus

  1029. is

  1030. God.

  1031. Follow

  1032. him,

  1033. listen

  1034. to

  1035. his

  1036. teaching

  1037. and

  1038. obey

  1039. the

  1040. will

  1041. of

  1042. God.

  1043. If

  1044. you

  1045. have

  1046. not

  1047. responded

  1048. to

  1049. Jesus

  1050. calling

  1051. before,

  1052. today

  1053. is

  1054. an

  1055. opportunity

  1056. to

  1057. put

  1058. your

  1059. trust

  1060. in

  1061. him.

  1062. If

  1063. you

  1064. have

  1065. responded

  1066. to

  1067. his

  1068. call

  1069. but

  1070. followed

  1071. some

  1072. misrepresentation

  1073. and

  1074. no

  1075. longer

  1076. seated

  1077. around

  1078. Jesus,

  1079. God

  1080. is

  1081. patient

  1082. with

  1083. you.

  1084. Repent

  1085. and

  1086. turn

  1087. back

  1088. to

  1089. Christ

  1090. today.
