  1. What I find really interesting about the Palm Sunday event, and the text that we're looking

  2. at this morning, of course, is not specifically about the Palm Sunday event, the triumphal

  3. entry into the holy city, but it's a parallel passage, a quite complementary passage, in

  4. fact, because we see in both instances just how fickle the vision of the people can be.

  5. If you recall, as Jesus is entering in his triumphal procession on the donkey, humble

  6. and lowly, greeted by palm branches and the shouts of Hosanna, there is a great reception,

  7. a great party, in fact, the anticipation that the Messiah, perhaps, is coming, and yet it's

  8. not very long into the week that Jesus is betrayed and arrested and tortured and executed.

  9. There appears to be, throughout the pages of the Gospels, in fact, this great dichotomy

  10. of vision, really sort of a polarizing effect that Jesus has on almost everyone that he

  11. encounters.

  12. It's impossible, in fact, to be apathetic or ambivalent about Jesus Christ.

  13. In John chapter 14, Jesus says something really radical, really provocative.

    John 14 chapter mention

  14. He says, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  15. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  16. Over and over and over again, Jesus, throughout his ministry, is putting himself at the center

  17. of human existence to say, if you want to abound, if you want to live, if you want to live eternally,

  18. you must orient yourself around me.

  19. When Jesus calls himself the way, the truth, and the life, we see that he's not simply speaking

  20. about justification, about salvation.

  21. He is speaking about that, of course.

  22. But he's talking about daily life, the grounds of real human living.

  23. The reason why I, and I suspect you, get distracted from time to time, give in to temptation to sin,

  24. is because we have, in effect, taken our eyes off of Jesus Christ.

  25. We have forgotten, at least momentarily, we've experienced a kind of gospel amnesia in the

  26. moment.

  27. We have forgotten how satisfying and how sufficient and how answering Christ is.

  28. This is true for every sin and every moment when we choose something other than God to

  29. satisfy us, that is actually what we're saying.

  30. We're engaging in a kind of disbelief.

  31. We are saying in the moment, God, you don't satisfy me.

  32. You don't fulfill me.

  33. You don't validate me.

  34. You don't justify me.

  35. This is what will give me peace and joy and happiness.

  36. I think of all the things that I look to to satisfy me when I know it really is only Christ

  37. and his glory that can bring me great and deep and abiding joy.

  38. This is what the Apostle Paul says in Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  39. Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

  40. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus,

  41. my Lord.

  42. For his sake, I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish in order that

  43. I may gain Christ.

  44. And so I think the biggest problem that Christians face is not that we haven't thought of Christ

  45. alone for salvation, but that we only consider Christ alone every now and again.

  46. Many of us live very compartmentalized lives.

  47. We tend to think of ourselves as existing in these time slots or having multiple roles.

  48. There's our work self and our home self, our family self, our school self, our recreational

  49. self, and then there's our religious self.

  50. And we're accustomed to thinking of Jesus when it's time to think of spiritual or religious

  51. things.

  52. But the Jesus of the New Testament, the Jesus who is the real Jesus, the Son of God incarnate,

  53. doesn't abide in his own assigned time slot.

  54. He is the ruler of all existence.

  55. He is the sovereign Lord of all.

  56. The real Jesus will not stand for being assigned a compartment in our life.

  57. He is the center of the universe.

  58. So again, the problem is not that we don't look to Jesus, but that we don't spend enough

  59. time looking at all of him, which is to say, pondering his glory.

  60. And that's what I want to sort of explore with you this afternoon, what I want to help us

  61. see together this afternoon, really the point of this passage in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  62. And the first thing that we should mention as we look at this exchange, this debate, this

  63. argument, is that it isn't really a personality clash.

  64. You know, sometimes when you hear, you know, some folks explain the difference between the

  65. Pharisees and Jesus or why they continue to have this clash, it's put very superficially

  66. as if the Pharisees are mean and Jesus is nice.

  67. And this is really the, you know, the reason why they're so angry with Jesus is because he's

  68. going around telling everyone to be kind to each other and he's teaching peace and this

  69. really upsets them.

  70. And that really just sort of scratches the surface of the primary disconnect between the

  71. religious rulers and Jesus.

  72. You don't execute somebody who's just teaching everyone to be nice to each other.

  73. That might irritate you, but it wouldn't drive you to want to execute them.

  74. What this is, is not primarily a personality clash.

  75. It is a theological conflict.

  76. It is about belief.

  77. In the ruler's mind, in the religious leader's mind, it's about orthodoxy and heresy, in fact.

  78. At stake is what is expressed in verse 48.

  79. Is Jesus a demon-possessed Samaritan?

  80. Now, of course, I know you don't believe that Jesus is a demon-possessed Samaritan.

  81. But if we were to put it in our terms and sort of the language of our day, how this sort of

  82. debate or misunderstanding or failure to see the glory of Christ really works out, we might put it this way.

  83. Who is Jesus?

  84. Is he who he says he is?

  85. Or is he something else?

  86. And Jesus himself is saying some incredibly provocative things about himself all over his preaching ministry.

  87. But right here in this theological conflict at which he is the center, he's saying some really provocative, really spectacular, really mind-boggling things.

  88. In verse 49, he says, I honor my father.

  89. In verse 54, he says, my father glorifies me.

  90. Now, if you're one of the religious leaders at this time, you're thinking, hold on just a second, time out.

  91. This has the air of blasphemy to it.

  92. Because this man who isn't yet 50 years old is saying basically, the father that you call God glorifies me.

  93. Why would God the father glorify this man?

  94. Who is this man to claim such kinship, such intimacy, such parity, equality with God the father?

  95. So we have to set aside, if we're to take Jesus at his own words, we have to set aside the option that he's simply a good teacher

  96. that went around telling everyone to be nice to each other.

  97. He is, as C.S. Lewis famously put it in his apologetic, he is either a lying scoundrel, right?

  98. A demonized Samaritan, perhaps.

  99. Or he's crazy, a lunatic.

  100. Or, or, quite possibly, verse 55, he knows the father.

  101. Like, actually knows the father and keeps his word.

  102. And what makes the difference, what makes the difference between seeing Jesus as he truly is,

  103. as the redeeming God-man, and not seeing him as he truly is,

  104. is contingent upon seeing his glory.

  105. My working thesis here, the reason why I draw that particular filter over our understanding of the text,

  106. comes primarily from 2 Corinthians chapter 3, where in verse 18, Paul says,

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  107. it's by beholding the glory of Christ that we are transformed from one degree of glory to another.

  108. So there's something, there's something supernatural, something spiritual,

  109. about seeing the glory of Jesus that makes the difference between seeing Jesus as just a man,

  110. or just a good teacher, or as a liar, or as a lunatic,

  111. and seeing Jesus for who he truly is, for who he revealed himself truly to be.

  112. And this really is a spiritual thing.

  113. Some people look at Jesus all the time, and they don't see anything impressive.

  114. They see the liar Jesus, or the lunatic Jesus, or the just a good teacher Jesus.

  115. But others, others see a glimpse of his glory.

  116. They taste and see, in the revelation of Jesus Christ,

  117. something delicious, spiritually transformative, forever changed.

  118. So if we look carefully at this text, we can see some of this glory here in this exchange.

  119. Jesus is showing it to us, even as he's withholding it from his Jewish accusers.

  120. And what do we see?

  121. How wondrous is the glory of the God-man Jesus?

  122. What is it that Christ's glory alone does?

  123. Well, first of all, Christ alone has glory that reaches into the eternal past.

  124. He has glory alone that reaches into the eternal past.

  125. As the author of Hebrews says in Hebrews chapter 1, verse 1,

    Hebrews 1:1

  126. once upon a time, God spoke in a lot of ways through the prophets,

  127. but now, finally, all of these messages, all of these prophecies,

  128. culminate in the final message, the incarnate word, Jesus Christ.

  129. And the entire collection of books that we call the Old Testament

  130. unfold the plan of redemption that sets the stage for the incarnation of the Son of God

  131. who has come to save sinners from death.

  132. Every person, every prophecy, every prescribed ritual,

  133. all of it is pointing to the fulfillment of itself in Christ Jesus.

  134. If you remember, right after his resurrection,

  135. Jesus kind of sidles up along the disciples on the road to Emmaus.

  136. And at first, they don't recognize him.

  137. They're not quite sure who he is.

  138. But he begins to teach and preach to them.

  139. And it says,

  140. He revealed everything about himself from the law and the prophets to them.

  141. Essentially, Jesus is preaching to them a Christ-centered,

  142. expository sermon from the Old Testament.

  143. Or if you prefer, because it's Jesus preaching it,

  144. a expository, self-centered sermon from the Old Testament.

  145. He's telling them about himself.

  146. This is where I was in Genesis and in Exodus and Leviticus and Deuteronomy.

  147. And their response, if you remember,

  148. the disciples who are hearing this sermon,

  149. Jesus showing himself, his glory from the pages of the Old Covenant Scriptures,

  150. their response is not simply to say,

  151. Oh, that's really interesting.

  152. You've really unlocked some things that help us mentally.

  153. No, they say,

  154. Our hearts burned within us.

  155. What does that mean?

  156. Well, it's the response of worship.

  157. They have not just heard intellectually the glory of Christ,

  158. but they have seen spiritually the glory of Christ,

  159. and they have been transformed.

  160. They've had their affections stirred for this Jesus.

  161. This is how Jesus puts it here in verse 56.

  162. Your father Abraham, Old Covenant,

  163. your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day.

  164. He saw it and was glad.

  165. This is very similar to another moment in Jesus' ministry,

  166. in the early days of his ministry, in fact,

  167. when he's in the synagogue in Luke chapter 4, if you remember,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  168. and he's reading from the scroll of Isaiah,

  169. reading the prophecy,

  170. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.

  171. He reads this,

  172. and then he essentially says to the gathered congregation,

  173. All of that is about me.

  174. And the audience reacts very similarly to how this audience reacts in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  175. The reality is that Jesus Christ is not some divine improvisation.

  176. It's not as if God thought that we could work out salvation by our own merit,

  177. just pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps,

  178. that we could eke out some sort of spiritual achievement,

  179. and then embarrassed by our failure to measure up,

  180. and surprised by our inability,

  181. thought,

  182. Oh, I guess I should go ahead and send my son down there to sort things out.

  183. No, the covenant of grace,

  184. begun and finished by Jesus Christ,

  185. was part of his plan all along.

  186. In fact, everywhere Jesus goes,

  187. he's telling people this.

  188. He's not plan B.

  189. He is God's plan A.

  190. He says,

  191. You don't believe me because you don't believe the scriptures.

  192. Here are a few examples.

  193. In Matthew 21, verse 42,

    Matthew 21:42

  194. Jesus said to them,

  195. Have you never read in the scriptures

  196. the stone that the builders rejected

  197. has become the cornerstone?

  198. This was the Lord's doing,

  199. and it is marvelous in our eyes.

  200. Matthew 22, 29,

  201. Jesus answered them,

  202. You are wrong,

  203. because you know neither the scriptures

  204. nor the power of God.

  205. Matthew 26, verse 56,

    Matthew 26:56

  206. All of this has taken place

  207. that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.

  208. Mark 14, 49,

  209. Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching,

  210. and you didn't seize me,

  211. but let the scriptures be fulfilled.

  212. Or Luke 24, 27,

  213. Beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  214. he interpreted to them in all the scriptures

  215. the things concerning himself.

  216. Luke 24, 45,

  217. He opened their minds to understand the scriptures.

  218. John 5, 39,

  219. You search the scriptures

  220. because you think that in them you have eternal life,

  221. but it is they that bear witness about me.

  222. The truth of the glory of the God-man Jesus Christ

  223. rests on the rich, thick tapestry

  224. of the God-breathed scriptures.

  225. Even Abraham, Jesus says,

  226. could see it on the horizon.

  227. From the darkness of antiquity,

  228. Abraham sees the dawning light of Jesus Christ,

  229. and his heart thrills with hope.

  230. His heart burned within him.

  231. He saw my day, Jesus said,

  232. and he rejoiced.

  233. But the Bible doesn't just give us a glimpse

  234. into the beginning of time

  235. and the beginning of the covenant.

  236. No, in fact, the glory of Jesus,

  237. the glory of the saving Son of God,

  238. didn't begin in Genesis

  239. any more than it began in Luke chapter 2

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  240. or John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  241. It's not just into the historical past

  242. that Christ's glory reaches,

  243. but into eternity past

  244. that his glory reaches.

  245. Before time even began,

  246. the plan of the gospel

  247. was in the heart of God.

  248. How do we know this?

  249. Well, we see that the names

  250. written in the Lamb's book of life,

  251. for instance,

  252. in Revelation chapter 13, verse 8,

    Revelation 13:8

  253. were written, it says,

  254. before the foundation of the world.

  255. The truth is this,

  256. for the Christian,

  257. Christ's saving glory

  258. was fixed on you

  259. before there even was a you.

  260. Romans chapter 8, verse 29,

    Romans 8:29

  261. Paul puts it this way,

  262. for those whom he foreknew,

  263. he also predestined

  264. to be conformed

  265. to the image of his Son.

  266. I don't know if you've ever

  267. thought about that,

  268. but just the reality,

  269. the biblical reality

  270. that the God who is outside of time,

  271. who created time,

  272. who rules outside of time,

  273. could look forward

  274. into the time

  275. that he will create

  276. and see me,

  277. puny little old me,

  278. weak and deficient

  279. and flawed,

  280. riddled with sin,

  281. and say,

  282. I'm going to put my grace

  283. on that person.

  284. I'm going to make that man

  285. a beloved son of mine.

  286. I can barely get over that.

  287. God even knows the sins

  288. I've yet to commit,

  289. the ones that I don't even know

  290. I'm going to commit.

  291. He sees all of that

  292. and still says,

  293. I dedicate myself to him.

  294. And if you've repented

  295. of your sin

  296. and put your faith

  297. in Jesus Christ,

  298. he says that about you as well.

  299. But it gets much deeper,

  300. in fact,

  301. the wondrous glory

  302. of the God-man

  303. reaches into the past,

  304. but also,

  305. secondly,

  306. Christ alone has glory

  307. that reaches

  308. into the eternal present,

  309. into the eternal present.

  310. In 1 Corinthians chapter 15,

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  311. in the first few verses

  312. of that chapter,

  313. Paul is essentially

  314. just giving kind of

  315. the outline

  316. of the gospel message.

  317. He gives the simple

  318. summation

  319. of the good news.

  320. He says,

  321. Jesus Christ died

  322. in accordance

  323. with the scriptures.

  324. He rose again

  325. in accordance

  326. with the scriptures.

  327. He mentions Christ's ascension

  328. and the witnesses

  329. to that event.

  330. And he says

  331. that this message

  332. is the most important thing

  333. that you could know.

  334. This message

  335. is of first importance.

  336. But then he says

  337. something really radical.

  338. And in fact,

  339. if you're reading too quickly,

  340. you would just sort of

  341. gloss right over it.

  342. This news,

  343. he said,

  344. about the gospel,

  345. this news about Jesus Christ,

  346. what he has done

  347. in history,

  348. he says,

  349. you received it,

  350. right?

  351. So,

  352. in some way,

  353. shape,

  354. or form,

  355. you assented,

  356. you believed

  357. in the gospel,

  358. you had a conversion

  359. experience of some kind,

  360. that might look different

  361. depending on your context

  362. or the circumstances.

  363. Perhaps you prayed

  364. a prayer with someone,

  365. someone led you

  366. through a gospel tract,

  367. you responded

  368. to an invitation

  369. at a church service

  370. or something like that,

  371. but you received it,

  372. right?

  373. So we kind of

  374. all understand that.

  375. But then he says,

  376. you didn't just

  377. receive it past tense,

  378. but you're also

  379. standing in it

  380. present tense.

  381. Isn't that interesting?

  382. The glory of Jesus Christ

  383. didn't just capture

  384. your soul

  385. at some point

  386. in your personal history,

  387. it is at this very moment

  388. sustaining you.

  389. Paul puts it in Galatians

  390. like this,

  391. having begun by the Spirit,

  392. do you continue

  393. in the flesh?

  394. And the answer is no.

  395. Having begun by the Spirit,

  396. you continue,

  397. you stand

  398. in the Spirit.

  399. Jesus Christ is

  400. millisecond

  401. by millisecond

  402. upholding your salvation

  403. by the word

  404. of his power.

  405. Here is the

  406. spectacular,

  407. mind-blowing thing

  408. that Jesus says

  409. to his accusers

  410. in verse 58.

  411. Jesus said to them,

  412. truly, truly,

  413. I say to you,

  414. before Abraham was,

  415. I am.

  416. Now,

  417. the first thing

  418. that we notice

  419. about this verse

  420. is this.

  421. Jesus is

  422. very clearly

  423. appropriating

  424. or assigning

  425. to himself

  426. the divine name,

  427. Yahweh,

  428. I am.

  429. And unless we think

  430. that's somewhat

  431. of an interpretive

  432. improvisation

  433. that we're just

  434. kind of making that up,

  435. notice how the crowd

  436. reacts to him

  437. making this statement.

  438. They know

  439. he's assigning

  440. the divine name

  441. to himself,

  442. which is why

  443. they pick up rocks

  444. to murder him,

  445. because they think

  446. he's committing blasphemy.

  447. He's claiming

  448. to be God.

  449. This is one

  450. of Christ's

  451. more astounding

  452. I am statements,

  453. if only because

  454. it's somewhat

  455. of a standalone.

  456. There's no

  457. addition to it,

  458. right?

  459. So in other places

  460. he says things like,

  461. I am the door,

  462. or I am the vine,

  463. or I am the way.

  464. Here he's simply saying,

  465. I am.

  466. It's very similar

  467. to the moment

  468. in Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  469. if you recall,

  470. where the disciples

  471. are on that

  472. storm-tossed boat,

  473. and Jesus comes

  474. walking on the water.

  475. And he says to them,

  476. don't be afraid,

  477. it is I.

  478. And the Greek

  479. phrase there

  480. that's translated

  481. it is I

  482. is the equivalent

  483. of the Hebrew

  484. I am.

  485. So it's not simply

  486. that the disciples

  487. are scared in the boat

  488. and Jesus walks up

  489. and says,

  490. don't be nervous guys,

  491. it's just me.

  492. Essentially what he's saying

  493. is,

  494. don't be afraid,

  495. I'm God,

  496. I control all of this.

  497. Jesus says,

  498. before Abraham existed

  499. in the past,

  500. I am right now.

  501. I don't know about you,

  502. but this hurts my brain.

  503. Before Abraham was in the past,

  504. I presently am.

  505. It's messing with our sense

  506. of the space-time universe.

  507. Just let it settle in

  508. for a second.

  509. Jesus Christ,

  510. not yet 50 years old here,

  511. is claiming

  512. to be outside of time.

  513. To be eternal,

  514. to be eternally now.

  515. He doesn't need

  516. a DeLorean or a TARDIS

  517. or a Narnian wardrobe

  518. to do it.

  519. This is what I find

  520. so wonderfully confounding

  521. about the incarnation.

  522. The Son of God

  523. becomes fully man,

  524. right?

  525. That's the true Christian,

  526. the orthodox view

  527. of the incarnation,

  528. that Jesus Christ

  529. is fully God

  530. and fully man

  531. simultaneously.

  532. He's not sometimes God

  533. and sometimes man.

  534. He's not a man

  535. who just is somewhat anointed,

  536. has the air of divinity

  537. about him.

  538. He's not God

  539. who gives the appearance

  540. or the illusion

  541. of being a man.

  542. He is 100% God,

  543. 100% man.

  544. And if this is true,

  545. if this is true,

  546. it makes sense

  547. of the entire testimony

  548. of the Scriptures.

  549. Paul in Colossians 2,

    Colossians 2:9

  550. verse 9,

  551. for in him

  552. the whole fullness

  553. of deity

  554. dwells bodily.

  555. Hebrews chapter 13,

    Hebrews 13:8

  556. verse 8,

  557. Jesus Christ

  558. is the same yesterday

  559. and today

  560. and forever.

  561. Or John chapter 8,

    John 8:58

  562. verse 58,

  563. before Abraham was,

  564. I am.

  565. Here's just one implication

  566. of this.

  567. I don't know if you ever

  568. have thought about this.

  569. I know we're entering

  570. the Easter season,

  571. Easter week,

  572. but look forward

  573. to the Christmas season

  574. and picture little baby Jesus,

  575. right?

  576. Cute, adorable,

  577. little baby Jesus.

  578. Put him in the manger

  579. with the swaddling clothes.

  580. If Jesus is fully God,

  581. then the baby Jesus

  582. who was wrapped

  583. in swaddling clothes,

  584. lying in a manger,

  585. was also omnipresent

  586. Lord of the universe.

  587. Because omnipresence,

  588. the ability to be everywhere,

  589. to be everywhere,

  590. to see everything,

  591. is one of God's

  592. impassable attributes.

  593. Meaning,

  594. it's one of the

  595. qualities of God

  596. or the

  597. characteristics of God

  598. that cannot change.

  599. So God cannot

  600. not be omnipresent.

  601. So for Jesus Christ

  602. to be fully God,

  603. really fully God,

  604. must mean

  605. that he was omnipresent.

  606. You might say,

  607. well,

  608. I mean,

  609. didn't Jesus

  610. disregard his deity

  611. as something

  612. to be grasped?

  613. That's what Paul says

  614. in Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2:5–8

  615. verses 5 through 8.

  616. But I think

  617. what Paul is getting at

  618. is not that Jesus

  619. didn't hold

  620. or maintain

  621. the fullness

  622. of his divinity,

  623. but that he did not

  624. exploit it

  625. or leverage it.

  626. In other words,

  627. at any point,

  628. the temptation

  629. for Jesus

  630. could have been,

  631. I don't want to experience

  632. this kind of suffering,

  633. I don't want to experience

  634. this kind of hurt,

  635. I don't want to experience

  636. this part of humanity,

  637. therefore I'm going to

  638. slip into God mode

  639. and exploit my deity

  640. so that I don't have

  641. to experience that.

  642. And what Paul is saying

  643. is he was fully God,

  644. he was never not God,

  645. but he didn't leverage

  646. his divinity

  647. against the experience

  648. of humanity.

  649. He didn't pull

  650. the divine parachute,

  651. in other words.

  652. So what we see

  653. in the wonder

  654. of the God-man,

  655. in the wonder

  656. of the incarnation

  657. is in essence

  658. not a reduction

  659. of the Trinity

  660. or reduction

  661. of the divinity

  662. of the Son of God,

  663. but an extension.

  664. It's as if the Son of God

  665. bent over from heaven

  666. and stooped low

  667. to become one of us,

  668. to embrace us.

  669. If we're going to deny

  670. that Jesus was simultaneously

  671. incarnate and omnipresent,

  672. in fact,

  673. we have to adopt

  674. a lesser incarnation

  675. on one side

  676. or a lesser deity

  677. on the other.

  678. Here is something

  679. extremely marvelous.

  680. In Calvin's estimation,

  681. John Calvin,

  682. he says,

  683. God's incarnation

  684. in Christ

  685. was not an exit

  686. from heaven

  687. so much as a descent,

  688. a stooping,

  689. in other words.

  690. So the incarnation

  691. was a humbling

  692. of God's Son,

  693. but not a lessening

  694. of Him.

  695. The God-man

  696. was simultaneously

  697. incarnate

  698. and omnipresent,

  699. there in time

  700. and space

  701. as the Son

  702. of a carpenter,

  703. but also upholding

  704. the universe

  705. as the Son of God

  706. before Abraham was,

  707. I am.

  708. And this is why

  709. this is good news,

  710. by the way,

  711. because it may just say

  712. this is just like

  713. a theological head trip.

  714. What difference

  715. does this make?

  716. Why should we even

  717. think about this?

  718. It's really complex.

  719. It's in the afternoon,

  720. you're tired,

  721. it's hot.

  722. Why even think about this?

  723. Well, here's why

  724. it's important,

  725. or at least why

  726. I think this is important.

  727. Because it's not just

  728. the sinful past

  729. that you've been

  730. forgiven of,

  731. and it's not just

  732. the future paradise

  733. that you look forward to,

  734. it is the very present

  735. moment

  736. that believers

  737. in Jesus

  738. are spiritually

  739. united

  740. to the Son of God.

  741. That Christ's glory

  742. reaches into

  743. the eternal now

  744. means that we

  745. who are united

  746. to Him

  747. are never in danger

  748. of being separated

  749. from Him.

  750. We get to enjoy

  751. blessed union

  752. with Christ.

  753. Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2:6

  754. verse 6,

  755. Paul writes,

  756. He has raised us

  757. up with Him

  758. and seated us

  759. with Him

  760. in the heavenly places.

  761. We are inextricable

  762. from Christ.

  763. In Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  764. Paul puts it this way,

  765. we are hidden

  766. with Christ

  767. in God.

  768. Or in John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  769. just three chapters

  770. after our focus text here,

  771. Jesus says,

  772. I am the resurrection

  773. and the life.

  774. Whoever believes in me,

  775. though he die,

  776. yet shall he live.

  777. Where does he get off

  778. saying this?

  779. If you don't see Jesus

  780. for who He truly is,

  781. hearing things like this

  782. would make you angry.

  783. This is why the rulers

  784. are constantly upset

  785. with Him

  786. and aggravated with Him.

  787. This is why they're driven

  788. by envy to murder Him.

  789. And yet for those of us

  790. who have seen

  791. the glory of Christ

  792. in a saving way,

  793. even if in a small way,

  794. but a saving way,

  795. this means that

  796. having been united

  797. to Christ,

  798. who is eternally God,

  799. you are as secure

  800. as Christ is.

  801. Now how secure

  802. do you think Christ is?

  803. The wondrous glory

  804. of the omnipotent,

  805. omniscient,

  806. omnipresent God-man

  807. reaches us,

  808. sustains us

  809. in the eternal present.

  810. But thirdly,

  811. and finally,

  812. Christ's glory,

  813. I'm sorry,

  814. Christ alone

  815. has glory

  816. that reaches

  817. into the eternal future.

  818. Christ alone

  819. has glory

  820. that reaches

  821. into the eternal future.

  822. This is where Paul goes,

  823. by the way,

  824. in 1 Corinthians 15,

  825. in those early verses,

  826. when he says,

  827. you received,

  828. past tense,

  829. the word,

  830. the gospel,

  831. you stand,

  832. present tense,

  833. in the word,

  834. the gospel,

  835. and then he also says

  836. something that's even

  837. more spectacular.

  838. He says,

  839. you are being saved

  840. by this word

  841. of the gospel.

  842. This is how Jesus

  843. puts it here

  844. in verse 51.

  845. Truly, truly,

  846. I say to you,

  847. if anyone keeps

  848. my word,

  849. he will never

  850. see death.

  851. This is like

  852. the moment

  853. when Jesus

  854. looks into

  855. the tear-stained face

  856. of Martha,

  857. weeping over

  858. the loss of her

  859. brother Lazarus.

  860. And Jesus himself

  861. is weeping,

  862. the text tells us.

  863. And I imagine

  864. he's just sort of

  865. gently put his hands

  866. on her shoulders

  867. and he's looking

  868. into her face

  869. with abundant,

  870. eternal compassion,

  871. and he comforts

  872. her in a way

  873. that no other man

  874. could ever comfort her.

  875. He says,

  876. I am the resurrection

  877. and the life.

  878. Whoever believes

  879. in me,

  880. though he die,

  881. yet shall he live.

  882. And everyone

  883. who lives

  884. and believes in me

  885. shall never die.

  886. and then as if

  887. to drive the point

  888. home,

  889. to make it personal,

  890. he looks her

  891. straight in the eye

  892. and says,

  893. do you believe this?

  894. This is the question

  895. before you this afternoon.

  896. This is the question

  897. before all of us.

  898. This is the question

  899. before us every morning

  900. when we get out of bed.

  901. Are we going to live

  902. our life as if

  903. Jesus Christ

  904. is the God-man,

  905. as if he really is

  906. the resurrection

  907. and the life,

  908. as if to be

  909. united to him

  910. means that

  911. even if we die,

  912. we will live?

  913. And in fact,

  914. to believe in him

  915. means that we'll

  916. never die?

  917. We must be out of our minds

  918. to think something like that.

  919. Or perhaps,

  920. perhaps we've seen

  921. something different

  922. that other people

  923. haven't seen.

  924. maybe our eyes

  925. have been opened

  926. in a way that

  927. other people's eyes

  928. haven't been opened.

  929. Maybe we've seen

  930. the glory of Jesus Christ.

  931. And we know

  932. he's not an ordinary man.

  933. And we know

  934. he's not just a good teacher.

  935. And we know

  936. he's not a liar.

  937. And we know

  938. he's not a demon-possessed

  939. Samaritan.

  940. We know he is

  941. who he says he is,

  942. the Son of God.

  943. For God so loved

  944. the world

  945. that he gave

  946. his only Son

  947. that whoever believes

  948. in him

  949. will not perish

  950. but have everlasting life.

  951. And the only alternative,

  952. of course,

  953. is everlasting death,

  954. which is no alternative

  955. at all.

  956. To take or leave Jesus,

  957. to be ambivalent

  958. about Jesus

  959. is to be against him.

  960. He says this himself.

  961. If you are not for me,

  962. you are against me.

  963. And these people,

  964. these leaders,

  965. they're against him.

  966. Verse 59,

  967. they picked up stones

  968. to throw at him.

  969. They wanted to kill him.

  970. They tried to kill him.

  971. But Jesus hid himself

  972. and went out

  973. of the temple.

  974. Now there's something

  975. fascinating here

  976. about verse 59.

  977. And I don't know

  978. if you see

  979. what I see.

  980. And it's something

  981. that I have missed

  982. for a very long time.

  983. If you're reading quickly,

  984. again,

  985. it's maybe something

  986. that you could just

  987. gloss over.

  988. He's revealed the truth

  989. about himself

  990. and they reject him.

  991. They want to kill him.

  992. But Jesus hid himself

  993. and went out of the temple.

  994. What does it mean

  995. he hid himself?

  996. What do you think

  997. he did,

  998. like literally,

  999. physically did

  1000. in that moment?

  1001. How did he,

1002. like was there a pillar there

  1003. and he like jumped

  1004. behind it to hide?

  1005. Did he pull

  1006. the kind of classic,

  1007. look over there guys.

  1008. And when they turn

  1009. their backs,

  1010. you know,

  1011. they're distracted,

1012. he kind of ran away.

  1013. What does it mean

  1014. he hid himself?

  1015. What does it mean?

  1016. Well, I mean,

  1017. this is just speculation.

  1018. This is just imagination.

  1019. It doesn't say literally

  1020. what's there.

1021. So we just have to kind of

  1022. go by implication.

1023. But it's within the realm

  1024. of possibility

1025. if he is who he says he is.

  1026. It could be

  1027. a miraculous obscuring.

  1028. In some way,

  1029. supernaturally,

  1030. spiritually,

  1031. he hid himself.

  1032. They couldn't see him.

  1033. Earlier,

  1034. I referenced the incident

  1035. in Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  1036. where Jesus is preaching

  1037. and the crowd

1038. at first is loving it.

  1039. I mean,

  1040. they really like

  1041. when Jesus teaches

  1042. because he's really dynamic

  1043. and he's really compelling.

  1044. They say he preaches

  1045. as one with authority.

1046. He has a lot of power.

1047. But then when he says,

1048. all of the stuff I just read,

  1049. that's about me,

  1050. they turn on him

  1051. in an instant.

1052. And they do what this crowd does.

1053. They try to kill him.

  1054. And if you recall,

1055. they try to push him

  1056. off a cliff.

1057. They like kind of carry him out

1058. to push him off the edge

  1059. of a cliff

  1060. to murder him.

  1061. And in that instance,

  1062. do you remember

  1063. what Jesus does?

1064. He walks right through him.

  1065. How do you think

  1066. he did that?

  1067. I mean,

1068. like did he fight him off?

1069. It doesn't say he did that.

  1070. How is it possible

  1071. that the crowd

  1072. would be around him

  1073. violently trying

  1074. to murder him

  1075. and he just passed

  1076. right through them

  1077. as if to say,

1078. this is not how this happens.

  1079. This isn't going

  1080. to happen today.

  1081. And he just peacefully

  1082. with authority

  1083. passes right through them.

  1084. Perhaps it was

  1085. a supernatural thing.

  1086. Perhaps this is

  1087. a supernatural thing.

  1088. He's obscuring himself.

  1089. But whatever's happening here,

  1090. whether he truly

  1091. hid himself behind something,

  1092. if it's like physically

1093. he's getting away from them,

  1094. or he veiled himself

  1095. in some supernatural way,

1096. the point is really heartbreaking.

1097. Either way you slice it.

  1098. The point is this.

  1099. They can't see him.

  1100. They can't see him.

1101. Which is the worst thing

1102. that can happen to you.

  1103. The worst thing

  1104. that can ever happen

  1105. to anybody

1106. is to be closed off

1107. to the glory of Christ.

  1108. The worst thing

1109. that can ever happen to you

  1110. is to reject Jesus

  1111. and have his glory

  1112. hidden from you.

1113. The glory of the God-man

  1114. is our only hope.

  1115. hope.

1116. I pray that you have

  1117. the eyes to see.

  1118. Christians,

  1119. here's the eternal reality.

1120. if Jesus is who he says he is,

1121. and if you have put your faith

  1122. in him,

  1123. he has you covered

  1124. past,

  1125. present,

  1126. and future.

  1127. And one day,

1128. when the rapidly coming future

1129. crashes into the eternal now,

1130. when the glory of Christ,

1131. as Habakkuk chapter 2 says,

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  1132. covers the earth

1133. like the waters cover the seas,

  1134. you will stand blameless

  1135. before his presence

  1136. in great joy.

  1137. Not because of you,

  1138. but because of him.

  1139. And you will see,

1140. as if for the first time,

  1141. that you are clothed

1142. in the glory of Christ.

  1143. Let's pray.

  1144. Heavenly Father,

1145. we ask for the eyes to see.

  1146. for some,

1147. in a fresh and newer way,

  1148. to have our eyes

  1149. opened a bit wider

  1150. to how wonderful,

  1151. how lovely,

  1152. how saving

1153. your son Christ Jesus is.

  1154. Father, perhaps,

  1155. for some,

1156. for the very first time,

  1157. that the scales,

  1158. as it were,

  1159. would fall from

  1160. their eyes.

  1161. and they would behold

1162. the glory of your son

  1163. for the first time.

  1164. Heavenly Father,

1165. your church believes in you

1166. and we ask that you would

  1167. help our unbelief.

  1168. Help us to press

  1169. the gospel

  1170. into the corner

  1171. of every room

  1172. of our heart.

1173. That we would worship you

  1174. more vibrantly,

  1175. more faithfully,

  1176. with our hearts aflame

  1177. with affection

  1178. for your son.

1179. We ask for the grace

  1180. to see your son

  1181. as he is.

1182. So we ask for your

  1183. Holy Spirit, Father,

  1184. to be stirring

  1185. our hearts and souls,

  1186. revealing a vision

  1187. of your son,

  1188. crucified,

  1189. risen,

  1190. ascended,

  1191. ruling over heaven

  1192. and earth.

1193. And we pray all these

  1194. things in the name

  1195. of your son,

  1196. the precious name

  1197. of Christ Jesus.

  1198. Amen.
