  1. There's an ancient parable that's found in both Hindu and Buddhist texts,

  2. and in fact, a variety of ancient religious texts.

  3. It's known as the parable of the blind men and the elephant.

  4. And it's possibly a parable that you've heard or engaged with

  5. because it's widely used even in modern circles

  6. to demonstrate how no one's got the full pictures.

  7. Just people have got part of a picture, but not the entire picture.

  8. And the parable is this.

  9. A group of blind men heard that there was this strange animal called an elephant

  10. had been brought to their village,

  11. and they found it, and they were feeling it to try and work out what this thing is.

  12. And I think I've just gone one too far.

  13. Can you go back for me? Thank you.

  14. And the first person grabs hold of the trunk and said,

  15. this thing's a big, thick snake.

  16. And another grabs hold of the ear and says, no, it seems a bit more like a fan.

  17. Another blind man wraps his arms around the legs and said,

  18. no, this elephant is in fact a tree trunk.

  19. A blind man who placed his hands up on the side of it said,

  20. no, elephants are in fact a wall.

  21. And another felled its tail, said, no, no, elephants are a rope.

  22. And another one grabbed the tusks and said, no, actually elephants are spears.

  23. It's been passed down for centuries.

  24. It's a famous parable.

  25. And someone more recently inverted the story in a bit more of a humorous way

  26. and said that six blind elephants were discussing what people were like.

  27. And after arguing, they decided to find a person

  28. and determine what it was like by direct experience.

  29. And so the first blind elephant felt the human being with its foot

  30. and declared human beings are flat.

  31. And all the other elephants felt the human being with their foot

  32. and said, yes, we all agree human beings are all flat.

  33. Now, this parable is used to illustrate,

  34. particularly in our modern world,

  35. to illustrate how world religions all have part of the truth,

  36. but no religion has the whole truth.

  37. And you come to a passage that was just read out to us in Matthew 14, 6,

  38. and you've got to ask yourself the question,

  39. are Christians therefore arrogant?

  40. Or more to the point, was Jesus especially arrogant?

  41. He certainly claimed to have exclusive rights to the God business.

  42. John 14, 6 just read out to us,

  43. I am the way, the truth, and the life,

  44. and no one comes to the Father except through me.

  45. That's an exclusive claim.

  46. And over the next three weeks,

  47. I'm going to be looking at that claim of Jesus

  48. and his claims to be the way,

  49. the truth, and the life.

  50. And in our times when all sense of reason about issues of faith seem to have been abandoned,

  51. I want us to have a reasonable faith.

  52. My hope, as I prayed earlier,

  53. is for the thinkers amongst us to believe and the believers amongst us to think.

  54. I hope for some of us to be led to belief

  55. and others to think deeper about what it is that we believe

  56. and find a deeper sense of joy and confidence and hope.

  57. So we're starting today with the first claim,

  58. Jesus is the way.

  59. I've got three main ideas that I'm running with.

  60. Rethinking Jesus' exclusive claim,

  61. the sweetness of Jesus' exclusive claim,

  62. and humility and this exclusive claim.

  63. So firstly,

  64. rethinking Jesus' exclusive claim.

  65. In these verses,

  66. you'll notice,

  67. as I will read out,

  68. that Jesus is providing

  69. his disciples with truth

  70. that must be believed

  71. if their faith is to be triumphant

  72. and their lives to be at peace in troubled times.

  73. And it is troubled times for the disciples.

  74. They have just heard from Jesus

  75. that he is departing.

  76. And they're like,

  77. their worlds are rocked.

  78. He tells them he's departing

  79. to his father's house

  80. to prepare a room for them.

  81. And then he tells them

  82. that they know where he's going in verse four.

  83. And it's at this point

  84. that Thomas speaks up in verse five and says,

  85. Lord, we don't know where you are going,

  86. so how can we know the way?

  87. Now, blokes in the room,

  88. this is really important.

  89. This must be the only time

  90. in recorded history

  91. where a man actually admits he's lost

  92. and asks for directions.

  93. It's Thomas a couple of centuries ago,

  94. a couple of thousand years ago.

  95. But Thomas's question

  96. is more ignorant

  97. than he actually realizes it is.

  98. His question implies

  99. that the way that Jesus takes

  100. to get to the Father,

  101. to get to God,

  102. is the same way

  103. that the disciples will go

  104. to get to the Father.

  105. And so Jesus stops at that moment

  106. and clears up Thomas's confusion.

  107. He stops talking about his way to the Father

  108. and addresses the way the disciples will take.

  109. And it's there in verse six.

  110. I am the way,

  111. the truth,

  112. and the life,

  113. and no one comes to the Father

  114. except through me.

  115. The way of Jesus to the Father

  116. is via the cross

  117. and the way of the disciples

  118. to the Father is Jesus.

  119. And because Jesus took his way to the cross,

  120. he himself becomes the way for others.

  121. But here's the sticky bit with this.

  122. Jesus insists here

  123. that he is the exclusive way.

  124. He is the way,

  125. the truth,

  126. the life.

  127. He's not opening up the door

  128. for any other opportunities,

  129. any other options,

  130. or ways,

  131. or truth,

  132. or life.

  133. And we must grapple

  134. with the magnitude

  135. of Jesus' claim

  136. if we're to deal with

  137. the person of Jesus.

  138. If you don't deal

  139. with the magnitude of his claim,

  140. you don't deal with Jesus.

  141. It's broadly acknowledged

  142. throughout the centuries

  143. that Jesus was a teacher.

  144. Jesus taught people

  145. to love each other.

  146. He was also very kind

  147. to the poor

  148. in the outcasts of society.

  149. He laid his hands on the sick.

  150. He fed the hungry.

  151. And throughout history,

  152. there have been many people

  153. who have done

  154. those sort of things.

  155. They have told people

  156. to love each other.

  157. They have cared for the sick.

  158. They've been kind

  159. to the poor.

  160. So you've got to ask

  161. if there's many people

  162. who have done that,

  163. why did this one,

  164. why did Jesus Christ

  165. become the most influential

  166. single figure

  167. in the history of the world?

  168. And it's not because

  169. of the nice things

  170. that he said and did.

  171. It's not because

  172. he told everyone

  173. to love each other.

  174. I mean,

  175. that message is everywhere.

  176. It's because

  177. of the controversial things

  178. that he said and did.

  179. it's because

  180. of the outrageous

  181. claims

  182. of Jesus.

  183. You see,

  184. with Jesus,

  185. there is a whole bunch

  186. of humility

  187. but no modesty.

  188. His actions

  189. are humble,

  190. they're gentle,

  191. they're kind,

  192. they're loving.

  193. He weeps

  194. with the weeping.

  195. His heart breaks

  196. at the death

  197. of his mate Lazarus.

  198. He is gentle

  199. with children.

  200. His character

  201. is unquestionably

  202. strikingly beautiful

  203. and compelling.

  204. He is,

  205. and yet,

  206. this Jesus

  207. is always combining

  208. highest majesty

  209. with the greatest humility.

  210. He joins the strongest,

  211. absolute strongest

  212. commitment to justice

  213. with astonishing

  214. mercy and grace.

  215. He reveals

  216. transcendent

  217. self-sufficiency

  218. and yet

  219. entire trust

  220. and reliance

  221. upon his heavenly father.

  222. He is tenderness

  223. without weakness.

  224. He is boldness

  225. without harshness.

  226. He is humility

  227. with absolute

  228. towering confidence.

  229. He is

  230. the perfect combination

  231. of truth

  232. and love.

  233. his actions

  234. and his character

  235. were so

  236. completely

  237. unself-centered.

  238. That is

  239. totally

  240. unself-centered.

  241. And yet,

  242. his claims

  243. about himself

  244. are so

  245. completely

  246. self-centered.

  247. you never

  248. see him

  249. pompous

  250. or offended

  251. or standing

  252. on his dignity.

  253. He's approachable

  254. to the weakest

  255. and the most

  256. broken.

  257. He's never

  258. moody.

  259. He's

  260. never moody.

  261. in fact,

  262. in his book

  263. called

  264. The World's Religions,

  265. Houston Smith

  266. says that

  267. only Jesus

  268. and Buddha,

  269. historically,

  270. only Jesus

  271. and Buddha

  272. so impressed

  273. their contemporaries

  274. that they

  275. asked

  276. not just

  277. who are you

  278. but what

  279. are you.

  280. In the history

  281. of all

  282. religious leaders,

  283. only those

  284. two

  285. were asked

  286. what are you.

  287. Smith makes

  288. the case

  289. that these

  290. two figures

  291. had characters

  292. that transcended

  293. ordinary

  294. human life

  295. to the degree

  296. that that question

  297. became necessary

  298. for people.

  299. And yet,

  300. Buddha

  301. asserted

  302. with great

  303. clarity

  304. that he

  305. was not

  306. God,

  307. that he

  308. was not

  309. even an

  310. angelic

  311. being

  312. or any

  313. form of

  314. divine

  315. being.

  316. He made

  317. it absolutely

  318. clear that

  319. I am just

  320. a normal

  321. human being,

  322. not Jesus.

  323. He was

  324. totally

  325. different.

  326. He

  327. repeatedly

  328. claimed

  329. to be

  330. the God,

  331. the creator

  332. of the

  333. universe.

  334. And so

  335. we don't

  336. come to

  337. grips

  338. with the

  339. real Jesus

  340. until we

  341. come to

  342. grips

  343. with

  344. the

  345. controversial

  346. things he

  347. says.

  348. We don't

  349. deal with

  350. Jesus

  351. until we

  352. deal with

  353. his enormous

  354. claims.

  355. And that

  356. is what the

  357. average person

  358. in this

  359. country

  360. is unprepared

  361. to do.

  362. The

  363. average

  364. person in

  365. our

  366. country

  367. thinks

  368. well of

  369. Jesus.

  370. They're

  371. positive

  372. towards

  373. Jesus

  374. with some

  375. reservations.

  376. Love the

  377. love stuff.

  378. Don't like

  379. the truth

  380. stuff.

  381. Don't like

  382. the claims

  383. of Jesus.

  384. When we

  385. went through

  386. Mark's

  387. gospel very

  388. recently,

  389. we noticed

  390. throughout

  391. Mark's gospel

  392. that Jesus

  393. is always

  394. always

  395. working

  396. hard

  397. to try

  398. and avoid

  399. people coming

  400. to that

  401. conclusion.

  402. You see,

  403. he's not

  404. interested in

  405. people liking

  406. him with

  407. certain

  408. reservations.

  409. If you

  410. listen to

  411. Jesus and

  412. have any

  413. intellectual

  414. integrity,

  415. then what

  416. Jesus does

  417. to us is

  418. he consistently

  419. pushes us

  420. to the

  421. extremes.

  422. you can't

  423. sit in

  424. the middle

  425. with this

  426. guy.

  427. We either

  428. reject him

  429. outright or

  430. we embrace

  431. him outright

  432. and both

  433. of those

  434. are on

  435. his terms.

  436. You reject

  437. him on

  438. his terms,

  439. you embrace

  440. him on

  441. his terms.

  442. What he

  443. says about

  444. himself,

  445. the controversial

  446. things,

  447. is either the

  448. worst thing

  449. that anyone

  450. has ever

  451. said or

  452. it's the

  453. best thing

  454. that anyone

  455. has ever

  456. said.

  457. I am

  458. the way

  459. is his

  460. claim.

  461. And either

  462. he is

  463. right and

  464. we follow

  465. him and

  466. we adore

  467. him or

  468. he is

  469. wrong and

  470. we destroy

  471. him.

  472. But how

  473. dare we

  474. decide to

  475. sit in the

  476. middle and

  477. say we

  478. just like

  479. him.

  480. That is

  481. not coming

  482. to terms

  483. with who

  484. Jesus is.

  485. He polarized

  486. people in

  487. the first

  488. century.

  489. So we

  490. need to

  491. rethink this

  492. exclusive

  493. claim.

  494. But secondly,

  495. we need to

  496. see the

  497. sweetness of

  498. Jesus'

  499. exclusive

  500. claim.

  501. It's

  502. really crucial

  503. for us to

  504. see here

  505. that when

  506. Jesus says

  507. that there's

  508. no one

  509. comes to

  510. father except

  511. through him,

  512. he's not

  513. offering us,

  514. he's not

  515. saying that

  516. you cannot

  517. know anything

  518. about God,

  519. without him.

  520. That's not

  521. what he's

  522. saying.

  523. In fact,

  524. philosophers,

  525. theologians have

  526. argued for

  527. many, many

  528. years that

  529. every world

  530. religion,

  531. philosophical

  532. system gets

  533. some knowledge

  534. of God from

  535. this world and

  536. all of them

  537. are arguing in

  538. one way or

  539. another in that

  540. direction, but

  541. they fall short

  542. because they

  543. don't see

  544. Jesus.

  545. so we can

  546. know something

  547. of God

  548. through general

  549. God has

  550. revealed himself

  551. according to

  552. Romans 1,

  553. revealed himself

  554. in the

  555. created order.

  556. What Jesus

  557. is saying

  558. here that no

  559. one comes to

  560. the father

  561. except through

  562. him, what

  563. he's saying

  564. is there's

  565. no way to

  566. come to the

  567. father and

  568. really know

  569. the father

  570. except through

  571. him.

  572. there is a

  573. real sweetness

  574. to these

  575. words of

  576. Jesus.

  577. Jesus is

  578. promising so

  579. much more

  580. than just

  581. knowledge of

  582. God.

  583. He's promising

  584. intimacy with

  585. God.

  586. Jesus is the

  587. only way to

  588. change God

  589. from being an

  590. oppressive boss

  591. who I need to

  592. please to

  593. being a loving

  594. father who

  595. accepts and

  596. embraces me.

  597. he's the

  598. only way to

  599. turn a

  600. relationship

  601. with God

  602. from fear

  603. and uncertainty

  604. to absolute

  605. confidence and

  606. warmth and

  607. love.

  608. Now my

  609. girls know,

  610. I've got three

  611. daughters and

  612. they know

  613. that if

  614. they tell me

  615. that they're

  616. going to do

  617. a chore,

  618. like unpack

  619. the dishwasher

  620. and go and

  621. watch TV

  622. instead,

  623. that there

  624. will be

  625. consequences

  626. for that.

  627. But they

  628. also know

  629. that the

  630. consequence

  631. isn't going

  632. to be I'm

  633. going to

  634. fire them

  635. from the

  636. family.

  637. They're not

  638. going to get

  639. the sack

  640. from being

  641. in the

  642. family for

  643. that.

  644. Even at

  645. their age,

  646. what they

  647. don't fully

  648. understand is

  649. that they

  650. haven't even

  651. begun to

  652. plumb the

  653. depths of

  654. what me as

  655. their dad and

  656. that as their

  657. mum would do

  658. if they were

  659. in danger.

  660. they

  661. didn't even

  662. plumb the

  663. depths of

  664. that.

  665. Back in

  666. 2012, I

  667. was in

  668. Saisha,

  669. it's right

  670. up the tip

  671. of Australia,

  672. I've been

  673. Cape York,

  674. and one

  675. afternoon I

  676. went to

  677. this place,

  678. which is at

  679. Saisha, on

  680. that wharf

  681. fishing.

  682. And I

  683. was up there

  684. with a group

  685. of friends,

  686. and one

  687. of the

  688. blokes had

  689. his four-year-old

  690. son with

  691. us, and

  692. we were on

  693. the deck

  694. of that

  695. wharf doing

  696. the fishing,

  697. and we

  698. were told,

  699. it's about a

  700. four-meter

  701. drop from

  702. where we

  703. were to

  704. the water,

  705. and we

  706. had been

  707. told that

  708. afternoon that

  709. there is a

  710. four-meter

  711. saltwater

  712. crocodile that

  713. lives under

  714. the wharf.

  715. No point

  716. fishing there,

  717. catch anything

  718. decent, the

  719. croc will grab

  720. it, and

  721. there'll be

  722. nothing left

  723. for you.

  724. But this

  725. is my

  726. only time

  727. to fish

  728. at the

  729. top end

  730. in the

  731. Gulf, and

  732. hopefully catch

  733. something of

  734. reasonable

  735. size.

  736. And my

  737. particular issue

  738. with the

  739. wharf at

  740. Saisha is

  741. that there

  742. was no

  743. fence, no

  744. barricades, or

  745. anything like

  746. that.

  747. I'm trying to

  748. enjoy an

  749. afternoon of

  750. fishing, and

  751. I've got this

  752. four-year-old,

  753. who's kind of

  754. an overconfident

  755. four-year-old,

  756. doing this

  757. at the edge

  758. of the

  759. wharf,

  760. looking over

  761. it, and

  762. doing this

  763. along the

  764. edge.

  765. And I'm

  766. thinking,

  767. there's a

  768. four-meter

  769. crocodile.

  770. Your afternoon

  771. tea is what

  772. you are to

  773. this crocodile.

  774. And so I'm

  775. trying to

  776. relax.

  777. It appeared

  778. to me that

  779. this kid's

  780. dad was not

  781. concerned at

  782. all about

  783. this.

  784. He's not

  785. in line,

  786. getting best

  787. dad of the

  788. year.

  789. I'm

  790. going to

  791. do this.

  792. Dad's

  793. over there.

  794. This kid,

  795. for some

  796. reason,

  797. wanted to

  798. hang around

  799. me and

  800. do this.

  801. And I'm

  802. conflicted

  803. here.

  804. I'm wanting

  805. to enjoy

  806. my fishing,

  807. and I

  808. couldn't

  809. enjoy my

  810. fishing,

  811. because at

  812. any moment,

  813. this kid,

  814. in my view,

  815. is going to

  816. tumble into

  817. the water.

  818. And I'm

  819. now conflicted,

  820. because if he

  821. ends up

  822. there, I

  823. feel like I'm

  824. going to have

  825. to jump in

  826. and rescue

  827. him.

  828. And I

  829. don't want

  830. to rescue

  831. him,

  832. because there's

  833. a four-meter

  834. crocodile down

  835. there.

  836. And so I'm

  837. conflicted at

  838. this point.

  839. What do I

  840. do?

  841. Will I,

  842. I mean,

  843. for me,

  844. getting eaten

  845. by a

  846. crocodile's

  847. got to be

  848. the worst

  849. way to go.

  850. Potentially,

  851. the worst

  852. way to go.

  853. And certainly

  854. not a helpful

  855. way to go,

  856. that's for

  857. sure.

  858. And so I

  859. cannot

  860. relax.

  861. And to

  862. save me

  863. the possibility

  864. of surrendering

  865. my life to

  866. the jaws of

  867. a crocodile,

  868. I gave up

  869. my one and

  870. only opportunity

  871. to fish in

  872. the gulf by

  873. packing up

  874. and going

  875. back to

  876. the campsite.

  877. Because I

  878. was not

  879. going to

  880. jump in,

  881. well, I

  882. might have

  883. had to have

  884. jumped in

  885. to save

  886. a four-year-old.

  887. Now,

  888. I am

  889. a finite,

  890. flawed,

  891. totally

  892. average

  893. parent.

  894. And it

  895. scares me

  896. to know

  897. how far

  898. I would

  899. go to

  900. save one

  901. of my

  902. daughters.

  903. If that

  904. was my

  905. daughter that

  906. happened to

  907. fall in in

  908. that moment,

  909. I would

  910. not even

  911. think,

  912. not even

  913. think for a

  914. moment,

  915. I would

  916. willingly give

  917. my life

  918. to a

  919. four-meter

  920. crocodile for

  921. one of my

  922. kids.

  923. There is a

  924. real

  925. sweetness

  926. here,

  927. because

  928. Jesus is

  929. saying

  930. that there

  931. is no

  932. other way

  933. for us

  934. to have

  935. this kind

  936. of confidence

  937. about a

  938. relationship

  939. with God,

  940. a confidence

  941. that this

  942. God,

  943. this Father

  944. would love

  945. me and

  946. us so

  947. much more

  948. than any

  949. mother would

  950. love their

  951. children or

  952. father would

  953. love their

  954. children.

  955. There is

  956. only one

  957. way to

  958. have that

  959. kind of

  960. confidence.

  961. And that

  962. is in

  963. Jesus.

  964. That's the

  965. sweetness that

  966. he offers

  967. here in

  968. declaring that

  969. he is the

  970. way to the

  971. Father.

  972. He's offering

  973. us intimacy.

  974. And there

  975. is no other

  976. religion in

  977. the history of

  978. this world that

  979. declares that

  980. God loves us

  981. more than we

  982. love ourselves.

  983. Not a single

  984. religion declares

  985. that God loves

  986. us more than

  987. we love

  988. ourselves.

  989. There's not

  990. a single

  991. religion that

  992. declares that

  993. you cannot

  994. be fired

  995. from the

  996. family like

  997. the Christian

  998. faith.

  999. Not a

  1000. single one.

  1001. And so

  1002. that makes

  1003. this exclusive

  1004. claim of

  1005. Jesus good

  1006. news not

  1007. good advice.

  1008. Every other

  1009. religion and

  1010. philosophical

  1011. system even

  1012. the system of

  1013. no religion

  1014. declares that

  1015. if you follow

  1016. this advice or

  1017. you live in

  1018. this particular

  1019. way you

  1020. obey these

  1021. rules then

  1022. you will

  1023. achieve the

  1024. goal of

  1025. life.

  1026. Not

  1027. Christianity.

  1028. Jesus has

  1029. not come to

  1030. show us how

  1031. to strive.

  1032. He did the

  1033. striving.

  1034. He didn't

  1035. come to show

  1036. us a mountain

  1037. of righteousness

  1038. to climb.

  1039. He climbed

  1040. it.

  1041. it was all

  1042. done for

  1043. us because

  1044. we are

  1045. incapable of

  1046. climbing and

  1047. striving.

  1048. You see

  1049. the biblical

  1050. picture of

  1051. the human

  1052. nature and

  1053. the human

  1054. race says

  1055. that we need

  1056. someone to

  1057. intervene.

  1058. And

  1059. Ephesians 2

  1060. 1 to 3

  1061. we see why

  1062. we can't do

  1063. it.

  1064. It says

  1065. we are

  1066. dead.

  1067. We are

  1068. dead in

  1069. our

  1070. transgressions

  1071. and sins

  1072. in which

  1073. we used

  1074. to live.

  1075. All of

  1076. us also

  1077. lived among

  1078. them at

  1079. one time

  1080. so we're

  1081. all dead

  1082. and we're

  1083. all by

  1084. nature

  1085. objects of

  1086. wrath.

  1087. You see

  1088. God's

  1089. diagnosis of

  1090. the human

  1091. condition is

  1092. not that

  1093. we're in

  1094. danger of

  1095. death but

  1096. that we're

  1097. in a state

  1098. of real

  1099. and present

  1100. death.

  1101. And yet

  1102. you look

  1103. around a

  1104. room like

  1105. this and

  1106. there are

  1107. people whose

  1108. bodies are

  1109. active,

  1110. whose minds

  1111. are sharp,

  1112. personalities

  1113. brimming.

  1114. And yet

  1115. in the

  1116. area that

  1117. matters the

  1118. most,

  1119. our souls,

  1120. our relationship

  1121. with God,

  1122. there is no

  1123. life there.

  1124. We are all

  1125. blind to the

  1126. reality,

  1127. to the demands

  1128. and the glory

  1129. of our

  1130. created God.

  1131. We simply

  1132. do not

  1133. love him.

  1134. We simply

  1135. do not

  1136. love him.

  1137. He is

  1138. dead

  1139. to us.

  1140. Ali,

  1141. can you

  1142. push the

  1143. next slide

  1144. for me?

  1145. As

  1146. John

  1147. Stott

  1148. says,

  1149. we should

  1150. not

  1151. hesitate

  1152. to affirm

  1153. that a

  1154. life

  1155. without

  1156. God,

  1157. however

  1158. physically

  1159. fit and

  1160. mentally

  1161. alert the

  1162. person may

  1163. be,

  1164. is a

  1165. living

  1166. death and

  1167. those who

  1168. live it

  1169. are dead

  1170. even while

  1171. they are

  1172. living.

  1173. We are

  1174. helpless,

  1175. we are

  1176. hopeless,

  1177. and we

  1178. are in

  1179. great peril

  1180. unless

  1181. something is

  1182. done for

  1183. us.

  1184. I've got a

  1185. picture up

  1186. here of the

  1187. philosopher

  1188. Jeremy

  1189. Bentham.

  1190. He died

  1191. on the

  1192. 6th of

  1193. June

  1194. 1832.

  1195. And this

  1196. guy left

  1197. his entire

  1198. estate to

  1199. the University

  1200. College of

  1201. London,

  1202. University

  1203. Hospital

  1204. College

  1205. Hospital in

  1206. London,

  1207. on the

  1208. condition,

  1209. you can

  1210. have all

  1211. of my

  1212. estate on

  1213. the condition

  1214. that you

  1215. preserve my

  1216. body and

  1217. stick it in

  1218. a wooden

  1219. box.

  1220. And that

  1221. my body

  1222. in the

  1223. box gets

  1224. wheeled out

  1225. for attendance

  1226. at the

  1227. hospital board

  1228. meeting.

  1229. Every hospital

  1230. board meeting,

  1231. I meant to

  1232. be there.

  1233. And over

  1234. the years,

  1235. they have

  1236. reworked that

  1237. requirement to

  1238. the point

  1239. where once

  1240. a year,

  1241. I think it's

  1242. at the

  1243. AGM,

  1244. the cabinet's

  1245. wheeled out

  1246. to the

  1247. board table

  1248. and the

  1249. chairman says,

  1250. Jeremy

  1251. Bentham,

  1252. present but

  1253. not voting.

  1254. Weird thing,

  1255. that is,

  1256. this guy

  1257. will never

  1258. raise a hand

  1259. in response,

  1260. he never

  1261. submits a

  1262. motion,

  1263. he's there

  1264. in body

  1265. but he's

  1266. been dead

  1267. for 175

  1268. years.

  1269. I believe

  1270. his head

  1271. is now

  1272. waxed.

  1273. Been dead

  1274. for 175

  1275. years.

  1276. You see,

  1277. dead people

  1278. can't do

  1279. anything for

  1280. themselves and

  1281. that is all

  1282. of us

  1283. spiritually.

  1284. We need

  1285. someone to

  1286. act for us

  1287. and yet the

  1288. very next

  1289. verse in

  1290. Ephesians

  1291. declares the

  1292. good news of

  1293. Christianity.

  1294. Have a look

  1295. at it up on

  1296. the screen.

  1297. Because of

  1298. his great

  1299. love for

  1300. us,

  1301. God who

  1302. is rich

  1303. in mercy

  1304. made us

  1305. alive with

  1306. Christ even

  1307. when we

  1308. were dead

  1309. in our

  1310. transgressions.

  1311. It is by

  1312. grace that

  1313. you have

  1314. been saved.

  1315. In our

  1316. state of

  1317. deadness,

  1318. spiritual death,

  1319. God acted

  1320. with grace.

  1321. God knows

  1322. our true

  1323. state and

  1324. what is required

  1325. to fix it.

  1326. We are dead

  1327. in transgressions

  1328. and sin and

  1329. so the Lord

  1330. Jesus took

  1331. that deadness

  1332. upon himself

  1333. that is

  1334. God,

  1335. the created

  1336. God took

  1337. on human

  1338. form,

  1339. identified

  1340. with us,

  1341. took on

  1342. death for

  1343. us,

  1344. broke that

  1345. curse so

  1346. that we can

  1347. have access

  1348. to God.

  1349. He went

  1350. to the cross

  1351. to open the

  1352. way for us

  1353. back to God.

  1354. And so what

  1355. that means is

  1356. that Christianity

  1357. is not good

  1358. advice on how

  1359. to improve

  1360. your life.

  1361. it is

  1362. life-altering

  1363. news that

  1364. declares that

  1365. the only way

  1366. that you can

  1367. have your sins

  1368. forgiven and

  1369. be saved is

  1370. Jesus.

  1371. The only way

  1372. you can be

  1373. raised from

  1374. death to

  1375. life is

  1376. Jesus.

  1377. The only way

  1378. you can know

  1379. God as a

  1380. father and

  1381. not as an

  1382. oppressive

  1383. boss is

  1384. Jesus.

  1385. God's grace

  1386. allows the

  1387. weakest to

  1388. come.

  1389. It allows

  1390. every dead

  1391. person to

  1392. come.

  1393. Every

  1394. spiritually

  1395. dead person

  1396. to come.

  1397. It excludes

  1398. no one.

  1399. So,

  1400. that means

  1401. that Jesus'

  1402. claim here

  1403. to be the

  1404. way is

  1405. an exclusive

  1406. claim.

  1407. But it's

  1408. the most

  1409. inclusive

  1410. exclusive

  1411. claim there

  1412. is.

  1413. In our

  1414. world,

  1415. everyone's

  1416. making

  1417. exclusive

  1418. claims.

  1419. But this

  1420. is the

  1421. most

  1422. inclusive

  1423. exclusive

  1424. claim because

  1425. of the

  1426. grace of

  1427. God.

  1428. When

  1429. someone

  1430. says,

  1431. you know,

  1432. surely a

  1433. good moral

  1434. person can

  1435. find their

  1436. way to

  1437. God,

  1438. they are

  1439. being so,

  1440. so exclusive

  1441. at that

  1442. point.

  1443. The premise

  1444. behind that

  1445. exclusive

  1446. claim is

  1447. that the

  1448. good moral

  1449. people find

  1450. God,

  1451. but all

  1452. the bad

  1453. people don't.

  1454. So,

  1455. some people

  1456. are in,

  1457. some people

  1458. are out.

  1459. It elevates

  1460. that exclusive

  1461. claim,

  1462. elevates

  1463. certain people

  1464. in society

  1465. over others.

  1466. Jesus

  1467. says,

  1468. in actual

  1469. fact,

  1470. those who

  1471. acknowledge

  1472. that they

  1473. are in fact

  1474. dead and

  1475. sinful and

  1476. bad come

  1477. to him

  1478. and trust

  1479. him and

  1480. his work.

  1481. They're the

  1482. ones who

  1483. are in.

  1484. It's those

  1485. who see

  1486. their sin

  1487. against God

  1488. and their

  1489. offense against

  1490. God.

  1491. It's the

  1492. humble who

  1493. are in

  1494. and the

  1495. proud who

  1496. are out.

  1497. And so,

  1498. yes,

  1499. this claim

  1500. of Jesus

  1501. is exclusive,

  1502. but it's

  1503. sweet because

  1504. it's the

  1505. most inclusive

  1506. exclusivity

  1507. because it

  1508. is open

  1509. to everyone.

  1510. Everyone.

  1511. So,

  1512. thirdly,

  1513. my third

  1514. point is

  1515. humility

  1516. and this

  1517. exclusive

  1518. claim.

  1519. Christians

  1520. are the

  1521. only people,

  1522. the only

  1523. people whose

  1524. exclusive claim

  1525. leads to

  1526. humility,

  1527. not arrogance.

  1528. If you,

  1529. for instance,

  1530. belong to

  1531. a religion

  1532. or a

  1533. philosophical

  1534. system that

  1535. says you

  1536. are in,

  1537. you're part of

  1538. the in

  1539. group and

  1540. you get

  1541. access to

  1542. God because

  1543. of your

  1544. effort or

  1545. belief or

  1546. knowledge or

  1547. culture,

  1548. then ultimately

  1549. what that

  1550. means is you

  1551. start to feel

  1552. superior to

  1553. people who

  1554. don't hold

  1555. those views.

  1556. You start

  1557. to see

  1558. those other

  1559. people as,

  1560. look at those

  1561. poor people

  1562. who don't

  1563. have the

  1564. same knowledge

  1565. or belief

  1566. that I've

  1567. got.

  1568. If you are

  1569. a secular

  1570. person who

  1571. thinks that

  1572. all religions

  1573. are the

  1574. same or

  1575. that they're

  1576. relative or

  1577. they've all

  1578. got bits of

  1579. the truth,

  1580. then ultimately

  1581. you will

  1582. feel superior

  1583. to those

  1584. poor fools

  1585. who think

  1586. that their

  1587. religion is

  1588. the only

  1589. true one.

  1590. Remember that

  1591. parable I'd

  1592. said right at

  1593. the beginning

  1594. about the

  1595. elephant and

  1596. the blind

  1597. men?

  1598. The point of

  1599. that parable

  1600. is that

  1601. every religion

  1602. has part of

  1603. the truth but

  1604. no one sees

  1605. all of the

  1606. truth.

  1607. And that

  1608. is how

  1609. vast ways

  1610. of our

  1611. society

  1612. view it.

  1613. The problem

  1614. with that

  1615. is the

  1616. only way

  1617. that you

  1618. could possibly

  1619. say that

  1620. all religions

  1621. have part of

  1622. the truth but

  1623. no religion

  1624. has the

  1625. whole truth

  1626. is if you

  1627. think you

  1628. see the

  1629. entire

  1630. picture.

  1631. You're

  1632. working on

  1633. the assumption

  1634. that you've

  1635. got the

  1636. picture.

  1637. You've got

  1638. the truth.

  1639. truth.

  1640. The only

  1641. way you can

  1642. see that

  1643. every religion

  1644. is blind in

  1645. some way is

  1646. if you think

  1647. you're not

  1648. blind.

  1649. The only

  1650. way to say

  1651. nobody has

  1652. the superior

  1653. knowledge is

  1654. to assume

  1655. that you

  1656. have the

  1657. superior

  1658. knowledge.

  1659. Whichever

  1660. way you

  1661. come out

  1662. of it,

  1663. your exclusive

  1664. claim leads

  1665. to pride,

  1666. leads to

  1667. arrogance,

  1668. arrogance,

  1669. because it

  1670. elevates you

  1671. over others.

  1672. But if

  1673. you're a

  1674. Christian,

  1675. you are

  1676. saved by

  1677. grace.

  1678. This means

  1679. that when you

  1680. talk to an

  1681. atheist or

  1682. you talk to

  1683. a Buddhist,

  1684. it is likely

  1685. that they are

  1686. better than

  1687. you.

  1688. But you're

  1689. not saved

  1690. because you're

  1691. better.

  1692. You are

  1693. saved by

  1694. grace.

  1695. Christianity

  1696. is the

  1697. only

  1698. exclusive

  1699. claim that

  1700. creates a

  1701. spirit of

  1702. humility.

  1703. Christians

  1704. therefore should

  1705. be the most

  1706. loving towards

  1707. people who

  1708. disagree with

  1709. them, who

  1710. have different

  1711. views than

  1712. they have.

  1713. Christians

  1714. should be the

  1715. most forgiving.

  1716. Christians should

  1717. be the most

  1718. patient.

  1719. Christians should

  1720. be the most

  1721. humble.

  1722. And friends,

  1723. reality is

  1724. until we

  1725. are,

  1726. why should

  1727. our society

  1728. believe this

  1729. incredible claim

  1730. of the Lord

  1731. Jesus?

  1732. Until they

  1733. see this

  1734. incredible claim

  1735. of the Lord

  1736. Jesus producing

  1737. in us

  1738. humility and

  1739. grace and

  1740. mercy and

  1741. patience.

  1742. the reason

  1743. most people

  1744. don't see

  1745. it in

  1746. Christians is

  1747. because most

  1748. Christians either

  1749. don't understand

  1750. they're saved by

  1751. grace or

  1752. forget they're

  1753. saved by

  1754. grace.

  1755. Could that

  1756. possibly be

  1757. you?

  1758. Up on the

  1759. screen, have

  1760. a look at

  1761. verses 8 and

  1762. 9 of

  1763. John 14.

  1764. Jesus

  1765. answered,

  1766. don't you

  1767. know me

  1768. Philip?

  1769. Even

  1770. after I've

  1771. been among

  1772. you such a

  1773. long time,

  1774. anyone who

  1775. has seen

  1776. me has

  1777. seen the

  1778. Father.

  1779. How can

  1780. you say

  1781. show us

  1782. the Father?

  1783. You see

  1784. what Jesus

  1785. is saying to

  1786. Philip there?

  1787. Have you

  1788. been around

  1789. me for so

  1790. long,

  1791. Philip, and

  1792. yet you

  1793. still don't

  1794. know me?

  1795. See, Jesus

  1796. claims to be

  1797. the way to

  1798. God.

  1799. He died that

  1800. we might

  1801. have intimacy

  1802. with God.

  1803. In fact,

  1804. intimacy with

  1805. God is what

  1806. the universe

  1807. is about.

  1808. It's what

  1809. the cross

  1810. is about.

  1811. And my

  1812. question,

  1813. potentially for

  1814. you, if

  1815. you're sitting

  1816. in church

  1817. for years,

  1818. is what

  1819. Jesus says

  1820. to Philip

  1821. here something

  1822. that he might

  1823. be saying

  1824. to you?

  1825. Is your

  1826. relationship

  1827. with God

  1828. knowledge

  1829. about him

  1830. or is it

  1831. intimate

  1832. knowledge

  1833. of him?

  1834. That is,

  1835. deep

  1836. in your

  1837. heart,

  1838. do you

  1839. sense the

  1840. warm embrace

  1841. of the

  1842. gospel?

  1843. Do you

  1844. sense the

  1845. warm embrace

  1846. of the

  1847. Lord Jesus?

  1848. In the

  1849. moments of

  1850. failure,

  1851. do you

  1852. sense the

  1853. warm embrace

  1854. of the

  1855. Lord Jesus?

  1856. where he

  1857. won't

  1858. sack you

  1859. from the

  1860. family?

  1861. Secondly,

  1862. that warm

  1863. embrace of

  1864. the gospel

  1865. is what's

  1866. at stake

  1867. for our

  1868. world when

  1869. we as

  1870. Christians

  1871. back away

  1872. from the

  1873. outrageous

  1874. claims of

  1875. Jesus.

  1876. Jesus.

  1877. When we

  1878. want to

  1879. not offend

  1880. anyone with

  1881. the outrageous

  1882. claims of

  1883. Jesus.

  1884. Jesus has

  1885. been offending

  1886. people for

  1887. 2,000 years.

  1888. Why stop

  1889. now?

  1890. We go

  1891. soft here

  1892. and intimacy

  1893. and yet

  1894. that is

  1895. what is

  1896. happening.

  1897. A few

  1898. years ago

  1899. there was a

  1900. large

  1901. ecumenical

  1902. service in

  1903. one of the

  1904. cathedrals,

  1905. Christian

  1906. cathedrals

  1907. in Hobart

  1908. to mark

  1909. an anniversary

  1910. of the

  1911. Port Arthur

  1912. massacre.

  1913. One Christian

  1914. minister,

  1915. a guy I

  1916. know,

  1917. was asked

  1918. to do

  1919. the Bible

  1920. reading.

  1921. The passage

  1922. for the

  1923. Bible reading

  1924. was printed

  1925. on the

  1926. service sheet

  1927. and it

  1928. was John

    John 14:1

  1929. 14

  1930. verses 1

  1931. through to

  1932. the first

  1933. half of

  1934. verse 6.

  1935. it stopped

  1936. at the

  1937. second half

  1938. of verse 6

  1939. which reads

  1940. no one

  1941. comes to

  1942. the Father

  1943. except through

  1944. me.

  1945. And the

  1946. organizer

  1947. said to

  1948. this minister

  1949. I know

  1950. that it

  1951. was very

  1952. important

  1953. not to

  1954. read

  1955. that bit

  1956. of the

  1957. verse

  1958. so as

  1959. not to

  1960. offend

  1961. anyone

  1962. as if the

  1963. rest of the

  1964. verse 6

  1965. didn't offend

  1966. anyone.

  1967. but not

  1968. to read

  1969. that

  1970. specifically

  1971. so that

  1972. people

  1973. would not

  1974. be offended.

  1975. My

  1976. friend

  1977. said

  1978. I

  1979. in fact

  1980. submit

  1981. to a

  1982. higher

  1983. order

  1984. of being

  1985. and I

  1986. will be

  1987. reading it

  1988. and so

  1989. he did.

  1990. I'd never

  1991. been asked

  1992. to do it

  1993. again but

  1994. he did.

  1995. It is

  1996. so so

  1997. crucial

  1998. for us

  1999. to stand

  2000. firm in

  2001. those moments

  2002. and not

  2003. be

  2004. embarrassed.

  2005. To stand

  2006. firm on

  2007. this claim

  2008. of Christ

  2009. because all

  2010. hope is

  2011. lost.

  2012. Intimacy

  2013. with God

  2014. is lost.

  2015. It's so

  2016. crucial for us

  2017. not to back

  2018. away from

  2019. this claim

  2020. because as

  2021. Acts 4

  2022. 12 says

  2023. this about

  2024. Jesus

  2025. salvation is

  2026. found in

  2027. no one

  2028. else for

  2029. there is no

  2030. other name

  2031. under heaven

  2032. given to

  2033. mankind

  2034. by which

  2035. we must

  2036. be saved.

  2037. Amen.
