  1. waiting for food at a restaurant, waiting to cross at the lights.

  2. I've been living here in Chatswood for almost two months,

  3. and I'm sick of waiting in traffic,

  4. waiting for a husband or wife to get ready, no elbowing,

  5. waiting for kids to do anything.

  6. Waiting makes us impatient, makes us angry.

  7. We've been conditioned through fast food

  8. and the instant gratification of the internet

  9. to get what we want and get it now.

  10. And if we don't get it, well, we should complain.

  11. What do you mean I have to wait?

  12. You know, don't you know who I am?

  13. I don't care that these three people paid before I ordered.

  14. I want my coffee right now.

  15. It's not just a personal shift, but it's also a cultural one too.

  16. We as a society have lost the ability to wait.

  17. You only have to go back a generation,

  18. and people would do things like send letters to each other

  19. and then wait to get a letter.

  20. Does anybody remember that?

  21. I remember waiting for letters.

  22. It's a little bit less exciting, you know, checking the mail these days.

  23. It's just bills and packages.

  24. You would wait in line at the bank to get cash out,

  25. and you would listen to the radio or to the wireless

  26. in the hopes of hearing your favorite song.

  27. I do remember back in the day having a cassette tape

  28. and waiting to hear my favorite song,

  29. and then I'd hit record on it.

  30. Some young people would have no idea what that looks like.

  31. But what is the impact of our impatience

  32. on our relationship with God?

  33. Do we expect that God should just jump at our prayers

  34. and deliver what we want in 30 minutes or less,

  35. or we get a refund?

  36. We don't want to endure a pain or hardship.

  37. We cry out, God, why am I suffering?

  38. Why am I enduring loss?

  39. Why have I lost this family member?

  40. Why am I waiting to get a job?

  41. Why don't I have children yet?

  42. Why aren't you providing for me?

  43. Why are there still problems and struggles in my life?

  44. I think one thing we can do is we can get caught up

  45. just remembering part of who our God is.

  46. We remember that our God is loving and merciful,

  47. and we think that He should just obey our every command.

  48. And we can forget that our God is massive

  49. and powerful and sovereign,

  50. and He works at His good pleasure.

  51. The truth is, waiting is hard.

  52. Waiting on God is one of the hardest parts of Christianity,

  53. and yet it's also one of the most important parts

  54. of Christianity.

  55. Today we're continuing our series,

  56. Reasonable Faith in Unreasonable Times,

  57. and we're looking at the book of Habakkuk.

  58. Last week we looked at chapter 1,

  59. and we saw that Habakkuk was crying out

  60. because of all the injustice that he saw in Judah.

  61. Habakkuk cried out asking God,

  62. why aren't you doing anything?

  63. And God replied, I am.

  64. I am going to bring justice.

  65. I'm going to bring the biggest superpower, Babylon,

  66. and they're going to judge Judah.

  67. And Habakkuk cried out,

  68. what?

  69. How can you bring those evil people to judge Judah?

  70. They're so much worse.

  71. And Habakkuk is trying to understand

  72. how a good and pure God

  73. could allow a sinful army

  74. to come and attack God's people.

  75. And this is where we find Habakkuk today.

  76. He has cried out to God,

  77. God has answered him,

  78. and Habakkuk wasn't satisfied with that response,

  79. so Habakkuk's gone back with another question,

  80. and now we find him waiting on God.

  81. Waiting for God.

  82. It is such a strange phrase.

  83. Just wait for God.

  84. Have you ever had someone say to you,

  85. just wait for God, just wait?

  86. Well, what does it mean for Habakkuk to wait for God?

  87. And what does it mean for us

  88. as we cry out and wait for God?

  89. We need to come to our God in prayer for this,

  90. asking that he would teach our hearts,

  91. so I'm going to pray now.

  92. Heavenly Father,

  93. as we look at your word this evening

  94. and we learn how to wait just like Habakkuk had to.

  95. Teach our hearts to have patience before you, Lord.

  96. Amen.

  97. So please have a look at me,

  98. with me at Habakkuk chapter one.

  99. It will be on the screen

  100. as we look at these four short verses.

  101. from chapter two, verse one.

  102. I will stand at my watch

  103. and station myself on the ramparts.

  104. I will look to see what he will say to me

  105. and what answer I am to give to this complaint.

  106. Habakkuk has said his peace,

  107. he's questioned God,

  108. he has expressed his concern,

  109. and now he is going to wait.

  110. He takes his concern to God and he waits.

  111. And what does waiting look like?

  112. Well, it's active.

  113. It's not passive.

  114. He's actively looking for God's response

  115. and he's going to persist as he waits.

  116. And Habakkuk paints this picture

  117. of waiting on God persistently

  118. like a century in a watchtower.

  119. Imagine you've got a city,

  120. it's walled in,

  121. and you've got towers

  122. where you can watch over where the enemy comes.

  123. That's what the ramparts are,

  124. the towers where the centuries would stand.

  125. And the job of the century

  126. is to be on the lookout,

  127. be watching persistently.

  128. You have to stay there your whole shift.

  129. It's not a job you can say,

  130. I'm a little bit bored.

  131. Maybe I'll have a nap.

  132. Maybe I'll duck down to the castle cafe

  133. for a skim milk latte.

  134. It's not that kind of job.

  135. If he takes his eyes off the target,

  136. even for a minute,

  137. he could miss seeing the approach of an enemy

  138. and the defenses might not be ready in time.

  139. Being a century on a tower

  140. requires immense persistence.

  141. This is what Habakkuk is doing.

  142. He is waiting and watching for God's answer

  143. with persistence.

  144. Now Habakkuk wasn't really on the walls,

  145. but this verse creates the idea

  146. that he was determined and persistent,

  147. waiting for God's response.

  148. And he has full confidence

  149. that God would answer his prayer.

  150. He's just going to keep waiting

  151. until God answers him.

  152. Not only is he watching for God,

  153. he is determined not to miss God's response

  154. when it does come.

  155. And when God does speak,

  156. he's not going to be too busy with life.

  157. He's not going to be distracted doing other things.

  158. He's not like a person who asks God for something

  159. and then forgets that they've asked,

  160. so that when God does provide or answer,

  161. they miss it.

  162. He is watching.

  163. He is persistent.

  164. His eyes are on God.

  165. His eyes are on the prize.

  166. Waiting can be passive,

  167. like you're just in a shop waiting for a coffee.

  168. But here, waiting on God is active.

  169. It's persistent waiting for God.

  170. So for us, waiting on God means to keep waiting.

  171. And so we shouldn't despair

  172. when God doesn't answer as quickly as we would like.

  173. It's an encouragement not to throw the towel in

  174. when Christianity and our Christian walk

  175. isn't as it should be.

  176. I think far too often we can rebel

  177. against God's lack of response.

  178. Maybe it goes something like this.

  179. I've prayed to God

  180. and God hasn't answered me as quickly as I like.

  181. And so I feel self-pity.

  182. Woe is me.

  183. God doesn't talk to me.

  184. And so I'm going to stop going to church

  185. as much as I used to.

  186. Maybe I'll stop reading my Bible,

  187. stop praying to Him.

  188. Because what's the point of listening

  189. and talking to God

  190. if He's not going to talk to me?

  191. And maybe I stop going to Bible study,

  192. community group.

  193. Maybe we distance ourself from God.

  194. But also from the way He's going to talk to us

  195. through His Word and through people.

  196. Now imagine you're that sentry on the tower.

  197. You've been sitting on that watchtower

  198. for your whole career,

  199. 12 hours a day,

  200. every day of the week.

  201. And you've never seen anything.

  202. And so you finally think,

  203. I've had enough.

  204. That's it.

  205. I'm going to quit.

  206. I'm going to go down.

  207. And so you climb down the tower.

  208. You go and hide somewhere.

  209. It doesn't take too long.

  210. Eventually the military comes

  211. and drags you out of whatever hole

  212. you've been hiding in.

  213. And you get court-martialed,

  214. dragged before a judge,

  215. a military judge.

  216. And the judge says,

  217. why did you leave your post?

  218. And you respond,

  219. well,

  220. I just didn't want to wait anymore.

  221. It was too hard to keep on waiting.

  222. Do you think the judge would be okay with that?

  223. No, I don't think so either.

  224. For us,

  225. it's the same with God.

  226. We need to continue to be persistent.

  227. Waiting for God is active.

  228. And Habakkuk,

  229. he is persistent as he looks

  230. and waits for God to answer.

  231. He is like that sentry in the watchtower.

  232. Waiting for God to respond,

  233. we must persist,

  234. even when it's hard.

  235. Now, we don't know how long it was

  236. that Habakkuk was waiting,

  237. but we do know that God answered him.

  238. He did receive God's answer.

  239. Have a look at verse two.

  240. Then the Lord replied,

  241. write down the revelation

  242. and make it plain on tablets

  243. so that a herald may run with it.

  244. For the revelation awaits an appointed time.

  245. It speaks of the end

  246. and will not prove false.

  247. Though it linger,

  248. wait for it.

  249. It will certainly come

  250. and will not delay.

  251. The Lord's answer is a special one.

  252. Habakkuk is to write it down.

  253. Habakkuk might not remember it.

  254. He might not remember everything,

  255. but everyone needs to know this message.

  256. It's an important one.

  257. So write it down on tablets.

  258. I can't help but think of the,

  259. you know,

  260. the movies with the Ten Commandments in it,

  261. these big stone tablets.

  262. It's that kind of idea.

  263. Clay tablets.

  264. Write it down

  265. so a herald could carry it

  266. and run out

  267. so that you could leave it somewhere

  268. and people could see it and read it.

  269. Now, our minds can do funny things

  270. with messages

  271. and God didn't want to leave Habakkuk

  272. any room for error.

  273. He wanted this message

  274. to be preserved with accuracy.

  275. So write it down.

  276. Write it down

  277. because there was going to be

  278. a period of waiting

  279. for God

  280. after this.

  281. Verse 3,

  282. Habakkuk had to wait

  283. for God to answer.

  284. And now that God has answered,

  285. God says,

  286. wait.

  287. I am bringing justice

  288. and I am working,

  289. but you are going to have to wait.

  290. You must have patience.

  291. It is close,

  292. but it might seem far off

  293. for humans,

  294. but it will come without delay.

  295. There's an emphasis here

  296. on the different timings

  297. and there's a difference

  298. in our perception.

  299. God perceives time

  300. very differently to us.

  301. For God,

  302. 80 years goes in the blink of an eye,

  303. but for us,

  304. it is a lifetime.

  305. Habakkuk,

  306. just like us,

  307. wanted God to act

  308. and to act immediately.

  309. But God is God

  310. and his timings are his own.

  311. And so Habakkuk

  312. had to wait with persistence

  313. and now he waits with patience.

  314. Are you patient?

  315. Would the person sitting next to you

  316. describe you as patient?

  317. You've got 15 seconds.

  318. Ask them.

  319. No, no, no, don't, don't, don't.

  320. I'm just joking.

  321. Maybe you say,

  322. oh, look, patience,

  323. that's not my virtue.

  324. I've got other virtues.

  325. I'm not one of those patient people.

  326. I don't deal well with that.

  327. And you just laugh it off,

  328. maybe like you're doing right now.

  329. Patience is the opposite of pride.

  330. From Ecclesiastes 7,

  331. it says,

  332. the patient in spirit

  333. is better than the proud in spirit.

  334. Patience comes from a place of humility,

  335. where we put someone else before ourself.

  336. I have a three-year-old daughter, Tamara,

  337. and patience can look like

  338. putting her conversation

  339. above what I need to say to her.

  340. And so she will go on and on

  341. and talk about leaves and dolls,

  342. probably as Evie would know from Kids Church.

  343. And so patience with my daughter

  344. looks like saying,

  345. what you have to say is valuable

  346. and so I'm going to listen to you.

  347. Patience before God

  348. is actively saying,

  349. God, you are sovereign

  350. and things happen in your time

  351. and not in my time.

  352. The book of James chapter 1 says,

    James 1 chapter mention

  353. the testing of your faith

  354. develops patience.

  355. Romans 5 says,

  356. suffering produces patience or perseverance.

  357. And patience and perseverance

  358. develop character

  359. and character hope.

  360. When trouble,

  361. dark times and suffering hit,

  362. they are an opportunity

  363. to learn

  364. patience.

  365. They're an opportunity

  366. to learn

  367. how to wait on God.

  368. Imagine you're going out,

  369. you're going on holidays.

  370. Where would we like to go on holidays?

  371. Does anybody want to pick a place?

  372. Somewhere you can drive to preferably.

  373. Sorry?

  374. Where are we going?

  375. I'm thinking Queensland

  376. because we're going to New Zealand.

  377. I'm not sure about driving to New Zealand

  378. unless we've got some kind of

  379. fancy new car.

  380. Queensland?

  381. Queensland?

  382. Has anybody driven to Queensland before?

  383. Yes?

  384. Okay.

  385. My family likes to go to Queensland.

  386. Let's say you've got the car packed.

  387. If there's kids in your family,

  388. if you are those kids you are packed in,

  389. you are looking forward to

  390. theme parks,

  391. sand and warm weather

  392. and you're excited.

  393. The whole family is excited

  394. about leaving cold,

  395. wet Sydney.

  396. Is anybody with me

  397. desiring this right now?

  398. Yes?

  399. Okay.

  400. I've got you.

  401. Good.

  402. And you drive out

  403. and you hit traffic.

  404. Not just a little bit of traffic.

  405. This is Chatswood

  406. on a Friday afternoon

  407. in the middle of a storm

  408. with lanes blocked

  409. on both sides

  410. of the Pacific Highway

  411. type traffic.

  412. One of two things will happen.

  413. Firstly,

  414. maybe you feel yourself

  415. starting to get

  416. just a little bit cranky.

  417. It's like getting hot

  418. under the car,

  419. just agitated.

  420. You start to seethe.

  421. This is taking too long.

  422. What turns out,

  423. what was just a minor inconvenience

  424. all of a sudden

  425. builds to four hours

  426. in the car.

  427. You haven't even left

  428. the suburb yet.

  429. You're snapping at the kids

  430. or your partner in the car.

  431. Everyone needs to go

  432. to the toilet

  433. but nobody can.

  434. The people in the car

  435. next to you

  436. are there to blame

  437. and you get angry

  438. and even when you

  439. finally get moving,

  440. you're so angry

  441. that the whole holiday

  442. is ruined.

  443. That's option one.

  444. Maybe you can imagine that.

  445. Option two,

  446. a little bit different.

  447. You get in traffic.

  448. Instead of getting angry,

  449. you acknowledge

  450. that it's not

  451. as it should be.

  452. And instead of getting angry,

  453. you wait patiently.

  454. You go through

  455. every single game

  456. in the car you know.

  457. And when you finally

  458. get moving,

  459. the family's okay.

  460. Maybe just one or two

  461. little cries out.

  462. That's it.

  463. But you've learnt patience

  464. and you've grown.

  465. What do we do

  466. when suffering

  467. and bad things

  468. and troubles hit?

  469. Do we thrash around?

  470. Do we get angry?

  471. Do we blame everyone else,

  472. including God?

  473. Or do we take

  474. the God-given opportunity

  475. to wait

  476. and to learn patience?

  477. When trouble hits,

  478. when real difficulties,

  479. when strife,

  480. when suffering happens,

  481. it can either

  482. drive us

  483. to God

  484. to have a closer relationship,

  485. to pray

  486. and talk more to God,

  487. or it can drive us

  488. away from God.

  489. Let it not be the latter

  490. for us,

  491. brothers and sisters.

  492. We come to the final verse

  493. of this short passage

  494. for us today.

  495. Verse 4.

  496. See,

  497. the enemy is puffed up.

  498. His desires

  499. are not upright,

  500. but the righteous person

  501. will live

  502. by his faithfulness.

  503. Here,

  504. God is comparing

  505. two different types

  506. of people.

  507. You've got the one

  508. who is upright

  509. before God

  510. and the one

  511. who is an enemy aggressor

  512. that is puffed up.

  513. I really like this term,

  514. puffed up.

  515. It's this picture

  516. of someone

  517. who is so full

  518. of themselves.

  519. They're just inflated.

  520. They're like a balloon

  521. filled up too far.

  522. These arrogant,

  523. puffed up people

  524. are ready to burst

  525. before God.

  526. They're swollen

  527. with pride

  528. and self-importance.

  529. On view here

  530. is the Babylonian army.

  531. They are self-righteous.

  532. They are pursuing

  533. every sinful act.

  534. They're seeking

  535. their own ends

  536. and it just leads

  537. to pride

  538. and arrogance.

  539. And it also leads

  540. to death.

  541. Verse 4 said,

  542. the righteous

  543. will live,

  544. but the enemy

  545. who is puffed up,

  546. well,

  547. the implication

  548. is that it doesn't

  549. lead to life.

  550. It leads to death.

  551. And so on view

  552. is the Babylonian

  553. army coming,

  554. but it's also

  555. anyone who is puffed up

  556. or arrogant

  557. before God.

  558. God is holding

  559. out his hand

  560. to Judah

  561. saying that

  562. you can have life

  563. even though

  564. an enemy

  565. is coming towards you.

  566. God will vindicate

  567. his people.

  568. Life comes

  569. to those

  570. who have faith.

  571. The righteous

  572. don't think

  573. of themselves

  574. arrogantly,

  575. but instead

  576. look to God.

  577. They've placed

  578. their faith

  579. in God.

  580. This is a faith

  581. that strips us

  582. of our arrogance

  583. and leads us

  584. bare and needy

  585. to God.

  586. This is a,

  587. it's a picture

  588. of a contrast

  589. between those

  590. who think

  591. they don't need

  592. God

  593. and those

  594. who realize

  595. they need

  596. everything from God.

  597. You see,

  598. faith is humility.

  599. It is the person

  600. who admits

  601. that they need

  602. God's help

  603. and what he has

  604. to offer

  605. and that they

  606. can't do it

  607. on their own.

  608. And the view

  609. of faith here

  610. is waiting

  611. in humility.

  612. Waiting

  613. on God

  614. is faith.

  615. This is what

  616. faith is,

  617. to take

  618. someone else's

  619. words,

  620. to take someone

  621. at their word.

  622. Faith is to take

  623. someone else

  624. at their word.

  625. Now,

  626. is anyone engaged

  627. here?

  628. your daughter

  629. got engaged

  630. yesterday.

  631. Tom's engaged.

  632. I actually,

  633. I think you're

  634. sitting in the

  635. same spot

  636. Rad's was

  637. this morning.

  638. So,

  639. Tom's engaged.

  640. Okay,

  641. let's use Tom

  642. as an example.

  643. Is that all right,

  644. Tom?

  645. Wonderful,

  646. thank you.

  647. It's just a very

  648. short illustration.

  649. So,

  650. okay.

  651. So,

  652. Tom has made

  653. a promise

  654. to someone else.

  655. He's made a promise

  656. that he is going

  657. to wait

  658. for marriage.

  659. When are you

  660. getting married?

  661. July.

  662. Very soon.

  663. Congratulations.

  664. He's made a promise

  665. that he's going

  666. to get married

  667. to Rad's

  668. in July.

  669. Now,

  670. while he has

  671. made that promise,

  672. he is waiting

  673. for that to come.

  674. While he's waiting,

  675. he doesn't go

  676. and marry

  677. someone else.

  678. Don't,

  679. don't go

  680. and marry

  681. someone else.

  682. You,

  683. he's made

  684. these promises

  685. and so Rad's

  686. can have

  687. faith

  688. in his

  689. promise

  690. that he

  691. won't go

  692. and marry

  693. someone else

  694. and that

  695. they'll get

  696. married

  697. in July.

  698. Faith

  699. in practice

  700. looks like

  701. waiting

  702. and someone

  703. waiting

  704. means that

  705. they have

  706. faith.

  707. God has

  708. made promises

  709. to Habakkuk

  710. that he

  711. will come

  712. and Habakkuk

  713. is to respond

  714. by waiting.

  715. Now,

  716. the second part

  717. of verse 4

  718. may have

  719. sounded familiar.

  720. The righteous

  721. will live

  722. by faith.

  723. The righteous

  724. person will

  725. live

  726. by his

  727. faithfulness.

  728. Now,

  729. this is

  730. one of

  731. the most

  732. important

  733. verses

  734. in the

  735. New Testament.

  736. It's one

  737. of Paul's

  738. most important

  739. phrases.

  740. He quotes

  741. this in

  742. Galatians

  743. and in

  744. the book

  745. of Romans.

  746. Let me

  747. read from

  748. Romans 1.

  749. It says,

  750. For

  751. in the

  752. gospel

  753. the

  754. righteousness

  755. of God

  756. is revealed.

  757. A

  758. righteousness

  759. that is

  760. by faith

  761. from first

  762. to last,

  763. just as

  764. it is

  765. written.

  766. The

  767. righteous

  768. will live

  769. by faith.

  770. We

  771. live

  772. by faith.

  773. God

  774. has made

  775. promises

  776. to us

  777. and faith

  778. is waiting

  779. on those

  780. promises.

  781. Just a

  782. couple of

  783. God's

  784. promises.

  785. God has

  786. promised

  787. that there

  788. is only

  789. life in

  790. Jesus.

  791. God has

  792. promised

  793. that he

  794. will raise

  795. us from

  796. the dead

  797. and God

  798. has promised

  799. that the

  800. only way

  801. to God

  802. is through

  803. Jesus.

  804. He's the

  805. only way

  806. to God.

  807. So having

  808. faith means

  809. waiting on

  810. these promises.

  811. We don't go

  812. running somewhere

  813. else to find

  814. our satisfaction

  815. in life.

  816. We can only

  817. get that in

  818. God.

  819. There's no

  820. need to try

  821. and extend

  822. our life as

  823. long as

  824. possible or

  825. even to fear

  826. death.

  827. Because we

  828. will have

  829. life in

  830. the

  831. resurrection

  832. and we

  833. eagerly want

  834. to wait

  835. for our

  836. life with

  837. the Lord.

  838. That's what

  839. waiting on

  840. God's

  841. promises

  842. looks like.

  843. Faith

  844. in God

  845. is

  846. characterized

  847. by waiting.

  848. And we've

  849. seen from

  850. these four

  851. verses that

  852. waiting is

  853. not passive,

  854. it's active.

  855. It's a

  856. waiting that

  857. is persistent,

  858. it's patient,

  859. and it is

  860. done with

  861. humility.

  862. As I've

  863. been writing

  864. and preparing

  865. this, I

  866. haven't been

  867. able to help

  868. but think of

  869. pregnancy.

  870. Is anyone

  871. pregnant here?

  872. No, no, no,

  873. tell me later,

  874. it's fine.

  875. What does a

  876. pregnant woman

  877. do as she

  878. waits for

  879. the baby?

  880. You know,

  881. after the

  882. first 12 or

  883. so, maybe

  884. after the

  885. first trimester

  886. of vomiting

  887. and all those

  888. kinds of

  889. fun things,

  890. there's fun

  891. things to do

  892. like pick a

  893. name.

  894. Is it going

  895. to be Harry

  896. or Megan?

  897. You have

  898. to sort

  899. out the

  900. baby's

  901. room,

  902. what colour

  903. is it

  904. going to

  905. be?

  906. There's so

  907. many decisions.

  908. Do we find

  909. out the

  910. gender of

  911. the baby?

  912. What cot

  913. do we get?

  914. Do we get

  915. a pram with

  916. three wheels

  917. or four

  918. wheels?

  919. Who are

  920. going to

  921. be the

  922. godparents?

  923. We have

  924. to go to

  925. prenatal

  926. classes to

  927. figure out

  928. how to

  929. hold this

  930. baby.

  931. And then

  932. there's the

  933. labour

  934. itself.

  935. And from

  936. what I've

  937. seen,

  938. that can

  939. be a long

  940. active

  941. waiting.

  942. Sometimes

  943. people cry,

  944. get this

  945. thing out

  946. of me.

  947. But sometimes

  948. it can take

  949. a long

  950. time.

  951. It's a

  952. long wait.

  953. So for

  954. us,

  955. our three

  956. children have

  957. made us

  958. wait a

  959. long time.

  960. Isaac was

  961. five days

  962. late.

  963. Tamara

  964. was three

  965. days late.

  966. And Micah,

  967. well, he was

  968. having a great

  969. time, so he

  970. was seven

  971. days late.

  972. So Alyssa

  973. and I would

  974. do all kinds

  975. of things,

  976. like eat

  977. chilli, go

  978. for long

  979. walks, bounce

  980. on one of

  981. those fit

  982. balls to

  983. try and

  984. bring on

  985. labour.

  986. None of

  987. them worked.

  988. But waiting

  989. for a baby

  990. is an

  991. active

  992. exercise.

  993. It takes

  994. patience and

  995. persistence.

  996. And as a

  997. father, plenty

  998. of humility

  999. because it's

  1000. not about the

  1001. father at

  1002. all.

  1003. The father's

  1004. job is to

  1005. support someone

  1006. else.

  1007. Can you

  1008. imagine if

  1009. someone found

  1010. out that they

  1011. were pregnant

  1012. and they

  1013. just decided,

  1014. I'm going to

  1015. wait for this

  1016. baby.

  1017. And then they

  1018. just, you

  1019. know, put

  1020. their feet

  1021. up and they

  1022. didn't do

  1023. anything for,

  1024. I don't

  1025. know, 35

  1026. weeks.

  1027. People would

  1028. ask, you

  1029. know, what

  1030. clothes is this

  1031. baby going to

  1032. wear when it

  1033. comes out?

  1034. Oh, I don't

  1035. know.

  1036. What are you

  1037. going to

  1038. name it?

  1039. We'll figure

  1040. it out later.

  1041. Waiting on

  1042. God does not

  1043. mean that we

  1044. just sit back

  1045. and do nothing

  1046. until he jumps

  1047. out and speaks

  1048. to us.

  1049. Waiting on

  1050. God is an

  1051. active exercise.

  1052. Waiting on

  1053. God looks like

  1054. persistence.

  1055. It looks like

  1056. patience and

  1057. it looks like

  1058. humility in

  1059. trusting God's

  1060. promises.

  1061. We keep

  1062. waiting even

  1063. when it's

  1064. hard because

  1065. we have a

  1066. God who is

  1067. faithful.

  1068. When times

  1069. are difficult

  1070. and when we

  1071. struggle, we

  1072. take the

  1073. opportunity to

  1074. learn patience

  1075. because patience

  1076. is humility

  1077. with God.

  1078. And when we

  1079. wait on God,

  1080. we grow in

  1081. our faith in

  1082. him.

  1083. Let me pray.

  1084. Heavenly Father,

  1085. we thank you

  1086. so much for

  1087. the opportunity

  1088. and challenge

  1089. it is to be

  1090. reminded to

  1091. wait on you.

  1092. Thank you for

  1093. Habakkuk's

  1094. encouragement.

  1095. Help us to be

  1096. persistent like

  1097. him, to watch

  1098. you like a

  1099. century in a

  1100. tower.

  1101. Help us to be

  1102. patient as we

  1103. wait, as we

  1104. put your timing

  1105. before our

  1106. own timing.

  1107. And Lord, we

  1108. ask that we

  1109. would remember

  1110. your promises

  1111. and we would

  1112. keep our eyes

  1113. fixed on those

  1114. as we wait

  1115. for the return

  1116. of your Son.

  1117. This we ask

  1118. in his name.

  1119. Amen.
