  1. Human beings have a timeless and universal fascination with superheroes.

  2. They've been the stuff of every culture from time immemorial.

  3. From Gilgamesh, the ancient Sumerian king,

  4. whose epic search for immortality is perhaps the oldest written story on earth.

  5. To Achilles, the great hero of the Trojan Wars.

  6. To the warriors and nation founders of ancient and modern history.

  7. To Olympians of every age and nation.

  8. To the supermen and the Wonder Woman and all the marvel characters.

  9. Whether they're supermen and women who are real or imaginary.

  10. Contemporary warfare, sports, entertainment.

  11. They are with us everywhere.

  12. There's a particular fascination with them.

  13. As I mentioned there in terms of marvel characters at the moment.

  14. You know, popular movies.

  15. We cannot get enough of superheroes.

  16. We even have to manufacture our own through TV shows like Australian Idol.

  17. And what these superheroes tend to do for us is they release us from the boredom of our ordinary lives.

  18. They excite us.

  19. They inspire us.

  20. They even scandal us with their falls from grace.

  21. They fascinate us.

  22. They give us relief by making our own faults and failings seem so small and excusable compared to their enormous ones.

  23. And the Bible has its heroes too.

  24. We're introduced to three of them in this text in front of us.

  25. But in turn, each one of these heroes points us to a greater hero.

  26. And in fact, the only true hero of the book of Judges.

  27. And that is God himself.

  28. And so, as I said at the beginning, we're exploring Judges 4 and 5 tonight.

  29. These chapters are an awesome read.

  30. They are really interesting.

  31. But both chapters 4 and 5 describe the same events, but coming at it from different angles, if you like.

  32. Chapter 4, which is what I just read, looks at the events from the perspective of a historian.

  33. It's a narrative, a historical narrative.

  34. Chapter 5 describes the same events that we've just read, but from the perspective of the poet or the theologian.

  35. So, there's three things that I want us to see.

  36. We're going to look at very briefly tonight.

  37. First of all, we're going to look at chapter 4 and be introduced to the ruler and the rescuers.

  38. Then in chapter 5, we're going to see who the true ruler rescuer is.

  39. And then the third point is what it means to live by faith in this ruler rescuer.

  40. Okay, so chapter 4, let's have a quick squiz at that.

  41. Get your Bibles open.

  42. At the beginning of chapter 4, we see the cycle that we were introduced to last week by Takeshi.

  43. It starts all over again, very simply.

  44. Again, the Israelites need evil in the eyes of the Lord now that Ehud was dead.

  45. So, one judge is dead and again, God's people commit evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  46. And their sin leads them to be oppressed by Jabin, king of Canaan.

  47. Now, ironically, this king would not even exist had Israel obeyed God back in chapter 1,

  48. when he said, go in and take the promised land and destroy him.

  49. This guy wouldn't even be there, but now he's oppressing God's people.

  50. And Jabin's main agent of oppression is this Sisera, his commander, his general.

  51. We're told in verse 3 that Sisera has 900 chariots fitted with iron at his disposal.

  52. And these things are the smart bombs and the drones of their time.

  53. This is military technology at its height.

  54. And we are told here that Sisera cruelly oppressed the Israelites for 20 years.

  55. This is the worst oppression that they have yet to face.

  56. And at the end of chapter 5, we get a measure of this man and how he treated people.

  57. In chapter 5, verses 28 and 29, Deborah, who will be introduced into a moment,

  58. pictures Sisera's mother and his mother's ladies-in-waiting,

  59. looking out for him to return victorious from his battle with the Israelites.

  60. And we learn from the discussion that they're having with each other while they're waiting for him to come back,

  61. that what Sisera likes to do is to steal women, rape them, and enslave them as his sex slaves.

  62. And they assume that he's taking his time coming back from the battle with Israel

  63. because he's in the process of taking more sex slaves for himself.

  64. He's in the business of raping women right now.

  65. That's why he's taking his time.

  66. It was so common knowledge, even his mother knows about it.

  67. Don't worry, he'll be home for dinner once he's done with the women.

  68. He was a cruel oppressor.

  69. And so it says Israel again cried out to the Lord for help, and God raises up Deborah.

  70. Now, Deborah is different from the other judges.

  71. First of all, she's a woman.

  72. She's the only woman judge.

  73. And secondly, she's described as a prophet in verse 4.

  74. Not a judge, but as a prophet.

  75. And as such, she preaches and teaches the word of God.

  76. And she does it in verse 6 when she says to Barak,

  77. the Lord, the God of Israel, commands you.

  78. That's her speaking prophecy over Barak's life.

  79. Verses 4 and 5 says that she was leading Israel and holding court.

  80. That is, Deborah was not a military leader.

  81. She was more like a modern-day judicial official.

  82. Verse 5 says the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided.

  83. Kind of like a Judge Judy kind of thing.

  84. She was recognized as a wise counselor, as a judge.

  85. I'm not making that comparison with Judge Judy, by the way.

  86. People came to her to settle all sorts of social and legal and relational cases.

  87. Deborah led the people of Israel from wisdom and for character rather than just pure military might.

  88. She was also, interesting, the only judge who led beyond the battlefield.

  89. She didn't just lead them to release them from the oppressor, but she led Israel as a nation from beyond the battlefield.

  90. She is the savior who rules.

  91. She's more than just a rescuer.

  92. She's a ruler.

  93. In fact, they look to her to reshape society.

  94. And in that sense, Deborah is the one judge of all the judges who is the greatest pointer to the monarchy period,

  95. which comes straight after this book and which this book is leading to.

  96. She is the greatest pointer to that.

  97. She's the greatest pointer also in this book to the long-awaited Christ.

  98. You see, the Christ of whom Isaiah 9 says,

  99. he will bear the government on his shoulders and he's called wonderful counselor, prince of peace,

  100. establishing and upholding his kingdom with justice and righteousness.

  101. So right here in the heart of this book of battles and slayings,

  102. we see a, it's a subtle point, but it's a significant point.

  103. God's people don't just need a mighty rescuer.

  104. They don't just need a savior.

  105. They need a ruler.

  106. They need a king.

  107. This is something that Israel will get to the point where they cry out for,

  108. but it's also a significant point for us to grapple with now.

  109. All of these judges ultimately find their fulfillment in the person of Jesus.

  110. He is the Christ who Isaiah is referring to.

  111. So what happens when the modern day person wants to treat Jesus as rescuer but not ruler?

  112. And there are people who want to do that.

  113. What happens when you treat Jesus just as your rescuer but not as your ruler,

  114. just as your savior but not your king?

  115. The result is liberalism.

  116. It's called cheap grace.

  117. It's license.

  118. That is, the gospel of salvation in Jesus is just purely about the management of my sin.

  119. It's about dealing with my sin.

  120. It's not about anything else.

  121. Just sin.

  122. The gospel is about having my sins forgiven so that I can go to heaven.

  123. It's not about relationship with God.

  124. It's just primarily my sins forgiven so that I get to go to heaven.

  125. So I don't get to suffer consequences for my sin.

  126. And so the thinking is, providing I've asked Jesus to forgive me,

  127. I've asked him into my heart and he's forgiven me.

  128. I get to go to heaven.

  129. It doesn't really matter how I live because he's in the business of forgiving me.

  130. So he's going to do that.

  131. I've got this get out of jail free or get out of hell free card.

  132. And I don't need to do anything about spiritual disciplines or radical generosity or anything like that.

  133. Because Jesus is my savior.

  134. On the other hand, if we treat Jesus as my lord, my ruler, and not my savior and my rescuer, the result is the opposite.

  135. It's legalism.

  136. It's a life obeying the rules.

  137. Obeying the rules.

  138. Not totally confident whether I've actually got out of jail for free at all because I'm not sure where I stand.

  139. I just hope I've done enough.

  140. And if I think, convince myself that I have done enough, then the result is self-righteousness and pride and arrogance and judgmentalism and a religious spirit upon everyone else who does not live up to my standard.

  141. And you can sit on this side and use all the language of Zion.

  142. You can lose all the language of righteousness.

  143. And you'll not have a life or a heart of righteousness.

  144. Jesus must be both liberator and lord.

  145. He must be rescuer and ruler.

  146. What's interesting in this text is that Deborah is not the one who, in God's strength, rescues Israel by defeating its oppressor.

  147. She's the ruler, but we have two other rescuers here.

  148. And so she sends Barak in chapter 4, verse 6.

  149. He will lead the battle against God's enemies.

  150. And Barak's name means lightning.

  151. I mean, that's awesome, isn't it?

  152. That's the guy you want to pick.

  153. The guy with the name lightning or crusher or something like that.

  154. So here we have Captain Lightning.

  155. He's the hero of the story.

  156. Although he doesn't seem to fit when you read verse 8.

  157. Barak said to Deborah, if you go with me, I will go.

  158. But if you don't go with me, I won't go.

  159. So maybe Captain Lightning's not quite appropriate.

  160. Captain Sissy Pants or something like that might be more appropriate for him.

  161. He refuses to go into battle unless Deborah comes with him.

  162. Now, he appears at this point to have a timid lack of faith.

  163. And maybe there is an element of wavering there for him.

  164. But he seems to simply refuse to trust and obey the word that came from God.

  165. And in fact, when you read verse 9, it appears to confirm that conclusion.

  166. Deborah says to him,

  167. Barak then summons the troops.

  168. He prepares to fight.

  169. But only because Deborah is with him.

  170. And it's not until verse 14,

  171. after Sisera has gathered his awesome war machine down by the river

  172. and Deborah has told Barak to go,

  173. that Barak charges down Mount Tabor with his men.

  174. The honour for the victory is still withheld from Barak, however,

  175. because of his lack of obedient, radical faith in verse 8.

  176. That's the pessimistic way to read this text.

  177. There is a number of commentators land on it that way.

  178. I think there is a more optimistic way to read it.

  179. And it's my preference.

  180. And the Hebrew language defends it.

  181. And that is to read verse 9 like this.

  182. On the expedition you are undertaking,

  183. the honour will not be yours.

  184. Now with this reading, reading it that way,

  185. Deborah is not rebuking Barak for being weak,

  186. but simply telling him,

  187. you are about to charge down a hillside

  188. into the teeth of 900 iron chariots

  189. and you're not going to get the honour for it.

  190. You okay with that?

  191. It's a prophetic statement of fact,

  192. not a critique of his faith.

  193. And there's a reason I read it like that

  194. when we get to Hebrews 11.

  195. This reading paints Barak as in fact a hero of faith.

  196. He wants to take Deborah with him,

  197. not because he's a coward,

  198. not because he's unfaithful,

  199. but out of recognition that Deborah is the leader of God's people

  200. and she leads through wisdom by speaking the word of God.

  201. The command from Deborah to Barak came from God

  202. and he wants to make sure

  203. that he's got the word of God with him

  204. right there, right then

  205. to go when he's told to go.

  206. He wants to make sure

  207. that he's got a godly woman there

  208. who speaks the word of God.

  209. And we see that in verse 14.

  210. As soon as Deborah tells Barak to attack,

  211. he does it immediately.

  212. He displays tremendous faith.

  213. But more importantly,

  214. he displays real faith

  215. in obeying the word of God at that moment.

  216. He wanted Deborah there

  217. so he could hear from God.

  218. And what makes this story so incredible

  219. is that Barak charges down this hillside

  220. into the battle against all odds,

  221. knowing that he ain't going to get the glory for it.

  222. He's been told that in advance.

  223. You ain't going to get the glory for this.

  224. There is no Victoria Cross for you.

  225. There's no Congressional Medal of Honor.

  226. You're not going to be knighted.

  227. You're not going to be promoted to General Lightning.

  228. It's not happening.

  229. No glory for you.

  230. Would you do that?

  231. I mean, how many of us even

  232. live the Christian life

  233. without the applause of other people?

  234. It's so much easier to serve

  235. and to give and to sacrifice

  236. when other people are noticing.

  237. And it's so embarrassing

  238. when we've got to point it out to them

  239. in subtle ways.

  240. He obeys God and leads his men

  241. knowing that the victory will be given to another.

  242. And when it's all over,

  243. it's done and dusted,

  244. Barak goes back to his job

  245. and Deborah will still rule.

  246. This is humility on display.

  247. And in his humble faith,

  248. Barak, the deliverer of Israel,

  249. really does point us to the great deliverer,

  250. who, though in very nature God,

  251. and therefore the rightful ruler of all things,

  252. still did not consider equality with God

  253. something to be grasped,

  254. something to be used for his own purpose,

  255. for a display of his own glory,

  256. but made himself nothing,

  257. humbled himself and became obedient to death,

  258. even death on a cross.

  259. And so Barak descends the mountain,

  260. Sisera flees,

  261. all that needs to happen now

  262. is for Barak to catch up with him

  263. and to claim victory,

  264. and by the time he does,

  265. Sisera will be dead.

  266. There is this deliciously inexplicable break

  267. in the narrative of Barak's victory

  268. over Sisera in verse 11.

  269. The battle's about to happen,

  270. and then all of a sudden,

  271. the writer mentions that Heber, the Kenite,

  272. had left the other Kenites,

  273. the descendants of Hobab,

  274. Moses' brother,

  275. and Pishni's tent by the great tree

  276. of Zanonim near Kadesh.

  277. Who cares about his camping trip?

  278. What's that there for?

  279. You read the narrative and you go,

  280. why do we care about this guy?

  281. Heber, he's on holidays.

  282. He's pitched his tent.

  283. You wonder, what's it there for?

  284. It's like cutting for a commercial break

  285. right when they're about to announce

  286. the winner of Australian Idol

  287. or Bachelorette

  288. or whatever the shows are

  289. that you watch nowadays.

  290. I don't.

  291. That's a judgment there I'm just making.

  292. But Heber's wife is integral in this story.

  293. That's why the little pitch in the tent thing there

  294. gets in the way.

  295. She's integral.

  296. Her name is Jael.

  297. And in verse 17,

  298. we are told that the fleeing Sisera

  299. reaches this tent which has been pitched,

  300. the tent of Jael

  301. and her name means safety.

  302. What a name.

  303. How ironic.

  304. Safety.

  305. And Jael welcomes him in,

  306. gives him a drink,

  307. lets him take a nap.

  308. Then we read in verse 21,

  309. Jael, Heber's wife,

  310. picked up a tent peg

  311. and a hammer

  312. and went quietly to him

  313. while he lay fast asleep

  314. because he's exhausted

  315. and she drove the tent peg

  316. through his temple

  317. into the ground

  318. and he died.

  319. I'm pretty sure that little bit

  320. and he died

  321. is superfluous to the whole,

  322. you don't need to add that.

  323. I'm just assuming he's dead.

  324. You know,

  325. just want to make sure he died.

  326. You know, he's dead.

  327. This is humiliating death

  328. for Sisera the great general

  329. because setting up

  330. and taking down tents

  331. in their culture

  332. was considered the work of women.

  333. Now, when I go camping,

  334. I do it because I like doing it

  335. and that doesn't do it.

  336. Just want to make that clear,

  337. I do it, right?

  338. Not now.

  339. In their culture,

  340. it was considered women's work

  341. and the tent peg,

  342. which is not the little things

  343. you get from BCF.

  344. This is like,

  345. boom, tent peg.

  346. This is household appliances

  347. for a woman.

  348. So for Sisera,

  349. this is death by toaster

  350. is what this is.

  351. Death by,

  352. or North Shore version,

  353. Thermomix.

  354. Death by Thermomix

  355. for Sisera, right?

  356. This is a smashing salvation.

  357. Pardon the pun.

  358. I'm on a roll.

  359. So this is humiliating.

  360. This is a humiliating death

  361. for this guy.

  362. But these verses do raise

  363. a dilemma for us.

  364. You know,

  365. how does bang, bang, bang

  366. through a bloke's head

  367. square with Jesus

  368. in Luke 6

  369. when he says,

  370. love your enemies?

  371. How do you know?

  372. Did she not wear her

  373. what would Jesus do

  374. ban that day?

  375. Like,

  376. how do you square that?

  377. Driving a tent peg

  378. through a temple

  379. seems at odd

  380. with that.

  381. Command to love,

  382. bless,

  383. pray for your enemies.

  384. Now,

  385. sometimes

  386. when the Bible

  387. has stories like this,

  388. we resolve the dilemma

  389. by remembering

  390. that we need

  391. to make a distinction

  392. between what the Bible

  393. reports

  394. and what it supports.

  395. What it reports

  396. and what it supports.

  397. For instance,

  398. David had many wives.

  399. Report.

  400. It doesn't support

  401. us having many wives.

  402. And so one thing

  403. it reports

  404. and over here

  405. it supports

  406. and celebrates.

  407. The problem for us

  408. in this instance

  409. is that jail's actions

  410. are celebrated

  411. in chapter 5.

  412. And so what her actions

  413. are doing

  414. in all the gruesomeness

  415. of it,

  416. they are celebrating

  417. the salvation

  418. of God's people

  419. through a horrible

  420. and humiliating death.

  421. That's what's happening.

  422. God's triumph

  423. over evil

  424. and the fact

  425. that one day

  426. all people

  427. will stand before him

  428. and be held accountable

  429. for their actions

  430. are in fact

  431. aspects

  432. of the gospel message

  433. which we should welcome

  434. and we should rejoice over.

  435. As hard as it is,

  436. as difficult as it is

  437. for us to grapple with

  438. and the consequences

  439. of what that means,

  440. we should welcome

  441. and we should rejoice over.

  442. However,

  443. the Christian

  444. should tremble

  445. as they do so

  446. knowing that they

  447. will stand there too

  448. with Jesus

  449. alone as their advocate.

  450. And Jesus

  451. is their advocate

  452. because he's the one

  453. who allowed

  454. tent pegs

  455. to be driven

  456. into his hands

  457. and his feet

  458. for our salvation.

  459. His gruesome

  460. and humiliating

  461. death

  462. was for our freedom,

  463. for our salvation.

  464. Revelation chapter 11

    Revelation 11:15–18

  465. verses 15 to 18

  466. is quite clear

  467. that Jesus

  468. should be praised

  469. for his victory

  470. over sin

  471. and Satan

  472. and for his final

  473. and eternal judgment

  474. and crushing

  475. of all his enemies.

  476. It says,

  477. all the heavens

  478. will declare

  479. the praiseworthiness

  480. of this Jesus

  481. who defeats

  482. all of his enemies

  483. forever.

  484. and we can know

  485. for sure

  486. that God

  487. will bring justice

  488. because we have

  489. seen sin

  490. rightly judged

  491. at the cross.

  492. The cross

  493. of Christ

  494. is not only

  495. the place

  496. where we are

  497. made right

  498. with God,

  499. it is the proof

  500. that God

  501. does in fact

  502. judge

  503. and punish

  504. sin.

  505. The resurrection

  506. tells us

  507. that there will be

  508. a future judgment

  509. as well

  510. for those

  511. whose sin

  512. has not been punished

  513. by the Lord Jesus

  514. with his death.

  515. That is,

  516. for those

  517. who decide

  518. to carry

  519. their sin

  520. themselves

  521. rather than

  522. hand it to Jesus.

  523. Acts 17

  524. 31

  525. says that

  526. the resurrection

  527. is proof

  528. that Jesus

  529. will judge

  530. and he

  531. will punish

  532. sin

  533. forever.

  534. Having said

  535. that,

  536. the death

  537. and resurrection

  538. of Jesus

  539. fundamentally

  540. does change

  541. our attitude

  542. towards our

  543. enemies.

  544. It is

  545. absolutely

  546. right

  547. that we

  548. want to see

  549. justice done.

  550. Absolutely

  551. right.

  552. And frankly,

  553. if you're a Christian,

  554. you plead

  555. for that.

  556. You

  557. plead to God

  558. to bring

  559. justice

  560. to this

  561. world.

  562. You

  563. pray

  564. for him

  565. for the

  566. oppressed

  567. in this

  568. world

  569. to be

  570. released.

  571. For those

  572. who are

  573. suffering

  574. in the

  575. face

  576. of

  577. injustice

  578. around

  579. this

  580. world

  581. right

  582. now,

  583. for God

  584. to intervene

  585. and to bring

  586. justice.

  587. You plead

  588. for God

  589. for that

  590. to happen.

  591. For those

  592. enslaved

  593. to be

  594. set

  595. free.

  596. But you

  597. plead for it

  598. knowing that

  599. it will be

  600. done.

  601. but not

  602. by us.

  603. Not

  604. by us.

  605. The coming

  606. judgment

  607. sets us

  608. free from

  609. seeking

  610. justice

  611. done in

  612. this life

  613. at our

  614. hand.

  615. There

  616. will be

  617. vindication

  618. of those

  619. who are

  620. active

  621. rightly

  622. and

  623. punishment

  624. for all

  625. wrongdoing

  626. beyond this

  627. life.

  628. We can

  629. yearn for

  630. justice

  631. and we

  632. should

  633. yearn for

  634. justice

  635. while at

  636. the same

  637. time

  638. still pray

  639. for and

  640. bless our

  641. enemies.

  642. Because of

  643. the cross

  644. we can

  645. have the

  646. attitude

  647. of Jesus

  648. who on

  649. the cross

  650. as he

  651. looked at

  652. those who

  653. were nailing

  654. him down

  655. killing

  656. him

  657. said

  658. father

  659. forgive

  660. them.

  661. The cross

  662. enables us to

  663. do that

  664. with our

  665. enemies.

  666. As you

  667. move into

  668. chapter 5

  669. we see

  670. who the

  671. true

  672. ruler and

  673. rescuer

  674. is.

  675. Sisera's

  676. death is

  677. the most

  678. devastating

  679. humiliating

  680. defeat

  681. possible.

  682. It is

  683. at the

  684. hand of

  685. a woman

  686. in their

  687. culture

  688. devastating

  689. and humiliating.

  690. And

  691. Deborah's

  692. prophecy

  693. back in

  694. verse 9

  695. of chapter

  696. 4 was

  697. true.

  698. The honour

  699. was not

  700. Barak's

  701. but it

  702. wasn't

  703. Deborah's

  704. either.

  705. Humanly

  706. speaking the

  707. honour was

  708. if you like

  709. shared amongst

  710. three people.

  711. And yet

  712. when you

  713. move into

  714. chapter 5

  715. we notice

  716. that the

  717. honour goes

  718. to no

  719. human at

  720. all.

  721. Chapter 5

  722. what it

  723. does is

  724. it looks

  725. beneath the

  726. surface of

  727. the events

  728. of chapter

  729. 4 and

  730. reveals the

  731. gods behind

  732. everything

  733. anyway.

  734. God

  735. receives the

  736. praise for

  737. the victory

  738. here as

  739. Deborah and

  740. Barak sing

  741. the praises

  742. of God

  743. who's

  744. defeated

  745. their enemy.

  746. God

  747. will

  748. sing.

  749. When we

  750. got these

  751. words up

  752. here

  753. one of the

  754. glorious things

  755. we get to do

  756. in corporal

  757. worship

  758. is sing

  759. the praises

  760. of God

  761. to lift up

  762. our voices

  763. and our

  764. hearts

  765. and declare

  766. that he

  767. is worthy.

  768. Sing.

  769. The younger

  770. generation have

  771. to hear us

  772. sing.

  773. That's what

  774. Deborah and

  775. Barak are doing

  776. here in

  777. chapter 5.

  778. It is just

  779. singing because

  780. of the victory

  781. that's been won.

  782. It says here

  783. as Israel's men

  784. were on a

  785. march,

  786. God was on

  787. the march.

  788. God showed

  789. his power

  790. through the

  791. rain in

  792. verse 4

  793. as his

  794. people advanced

  795. down the

  796. mountain,

  797. the one

  798. for whom

  799. all mountains

  800. shake and

  801. tremble,

  802. goes to

  803. war in

  804. verse 5.

  805. The point of

  806. verses 6

  807. and 8 is

  808. that he is

  809. the only true

  810. God.

  811. Israel fell

  812. under oppression

  813. because they

  814. abandoned God

  815. and they served

  816. idols and

  817. because of that

  818. all of their

  819. society fell

  820. into decay.

  821. Deborah was

  822. their hope

  823. as the

  824. restorer of

  825. the society

  826. but verses

  827. 10 to 12

  828. revealed that

  829. it was actually

  830. God's actions

  831. that gave them

  832. hope.

  833. Then in

  834. verses 19

  835. to 22

  836. Deborah and

  837. Barak

  838. return and

  839. confirm again

  840. that this was

  841. God's victory.

  842. The God

  843. who rules

  844. nature,

  845. even the

  846. stars,

  847. was fighting

  848. for them

  849. verse 21

  850. reveals how

  851. Sisera's

  852. mighty chariots

  853. were defeated

  854. in the end.

  855. The God

  856. who made

  857. the clouds

  858. pour down

  859. water in

  860. verse 4

  861. caused the

  862. river to

  863. flood

  864. sweeping

  865. away

  866. the chariots

  867. of Sisera

  868. as Barak

  869. advanced.

  870. Sisera's

  871. not an

  872. idiot.

  873. He would

  874. never have

  875. arranged

  876. his

  877. chariots

  878. for battle

  879. next to

  880. a river

  881. if he

  882. was expecting

  883. it to

  884. rain.

  885. And this

  886. is the

  887. dry season

  888. when this

  889. happened.

  890. But God

  891. in verse 6

  892. through Deborah

  893. told Israel

  894. exactly where

  895. to fight

  896. and exactly

  897. when to

  898. fight.

  899. God

  900. brought the

  901. rain

  902. and God

  903. brought the

  904. rain

  905. and God

  906. the

  907. lesson for

  908. God's

  909. people here

  910. is that

  911. he wins

  912. and so

  913. blessing is

  914. found in

  915. and with

  916. him.

  917. Blessing

  918. comes when

  919. we put

  920. ourselves in

  921. his service

  922. whatever the

  923. odds,

  924. whatever the

  925. likely cost

  926. it is for

  927. us.

  928. On the

  929. other hand

  930. according to

  931. verse 23

  932. there is a

  933. curse for

  934. those who

  935. do exactly

  936. the opposite

  937. and those

  938. who stay

  939. at home.

  940. It is not

  941. that God

  942. needs our

  943. help but

  944. that he

  945. allows us

  946. to be

  947. involved in

  948. his victory.

  949. Even

  950. Jael here

  951. despite being

  952. a Kenite

  953. and an

  954. enemy of

  955. God took

  956. her place

  957. in the

  958. story and

  959. killed the

  960. enemy of

  961. God.

  962. It's an

  963. incredible

  964. narrative.

  965. And it's

  966. just so

  967. wonderful and

  968. ironic and

  969. beautiful how

  970. the narrative

  971. of these

  972. chapters are

  973. framed around

  974. the actions

  975. of two

  976. women.

  977. Deborah

  978. leads Israel

  979. against

  980. Sisera's

  981. oppression

  982. seen most

  983. horribly the

  984. way he treats

  985. women and

  986. then Jael is

  987. the means by

  988. which his

  989. reign of

  990. rape and

  991. terror come

  992. to an end.

  993. two women

  994. bring him

  995. down.

  996. However,

  997. neither of

  998. them are

  999. mentioned in

  1000. the Bible

  1001. again.

  1002. Neither of

  1003. them.

  1004. Judges 4

  1005. tends to

  1006. play down

  1007. the hero

  1008. status of

  1009. Barak.

  1010. Barak.

  1011. On the

  1012. other hand,

  1013. Samuel,

  1014. the great

  1015. prophet of

  1016. Israel,

  1017. mentions

  1018. Barak in

  1019. his farewell

  1020. address to

  1021. the nation

  1022. of Israel

  1023. in 1

    1 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  1024. Samuel

  1025. chapter 12

  1026. and he's

  1027. described there

  1028. as a

  1029. deliverer

  1030. of Israel.

  1031. And

  1032. Barak is

  1033. also mentioned

  1034. as one of

  1035. the greats

  1036. of the

  1037. faith in

  1038. Hebrews 11

  1039. 32 to

  1040. 34 where

  1041. it says,

  1042. and what

  1043. more shall

  1044. I say?

  1045. I do not

  1046. have time to

  1047. tell about

  1048. Gideon,

  1049. Barak,

  1050. Samson,

  1051. Jephna,

  1052. about David

  1053. and Samuel

  1054. and the

  1055. prophets who

  1056. through faith

  1057. conquered

  1058. kingdoms,

  1059. administered

  1060. justice and

  1061. gained what

  1062. was promised,

  1063. who shut

  1064. the mouths

  1065. of lions,

  1066. quenched

  1067. the fury

  1068. of the

  1069. flames and

  1070. escaped the

  1071. edge of

  1072. the sword,

  1073. whose

  1074. weakness

  1075. was turned

  1076. to strength

  1077. and who

  1078. became

  1079. powerful in

  1080. battle and

  1081. routed

  1082. foreign

  1083. armies.

  1084. Barak did

  1085. what he

  1086. did according

  1087. to verse

  1088. 33 of

  1089. Hebrews 11

  1090. through

  1091. faith.

  1092. When the

  1093. command from

  1094. God came

  1095. to go

  1096. via Deborah,

  1097. he didn't

  1098. hesitate.

  1099. Down the

  1100. mountain he

  1101. went with

  1102. 10,000 men

  1103. following him.

  1104. It was

  1105. inspirational

  1106. leadership.

  1107. An iron

  1108. chariot could

  1109. cut through

  1110. a foot

  1111. soldier like

  1112. a hot

  1113. knife through

  1114. butter.

  1115. And 900

  1116. chariots would

  1117. defeat 10,000

  1118. foot soldiers

  1119. in open

  1120. plain every

  1121. day of the

  1122. week.

  1123. And the

  1124. biggest challenge

  1125. for Barak

  1126. came when

  1127. he hit the

  1128. valley floor

  1129. at the

  1130. bottom of

  1131. the mountain.

  1132. When he

  1133. hit the

  1134. bottom of

  1135. the mountain,

  1136. it was at

  1137. that point he

  1138. had to

  1139. break cover

  1140. and he

  1141. had to

  1142. advance for

  1143. 20 kilometers

  1144. across open

  1145. ground

  1146. before he

  1147. hit the

  1148. river

  1149. Kishon

  1150. and to

  1151. front

  1152. Sisera's

  1153. formidable

  1154. chariots in

  1155. open country.

  1156. Sisera had

  1157. plenty of

  1158. time to

  1159. marshal.

  1160. They would

  1161. have been

  1162. destroyed

  1163. before they

  1164. even got

  1165. to the

  1166. river.

  1167. That took

  1168. nerves of

  1169. steel.

  1170. And most

  1171. of all,

  1172. it took

  1173. faith.

  1174. An unwavering

  1175. trust in the

  1176. God who had

  1177. promised them

  1178. today's the day

  1179. going to be

  1180. victory.

  1181. You go now

  1182. and you get

  1183. victory.

  1184. Barak's forces

  1185. were no match

  1186. for Sisera's

  1187. chariots,

  1188. but Sisera's

  1189. chariots were

  1190. no match for

  1191. God.

  1192. This is

  1193. Barak at

  1194. his best,

  1195. the man of

  1196. faith,

  1197. the faith that

  1198. acts,

  1199. the faith that

  1200. stakes everything

  1201. on God.

  1202. And that's why

  1203. Barak is

  1204. mentioned in

  1205. Hebrews 11.

  1206. He did not

  1207. grab victory

  1208. because of his

  1209. training,

  1210. because of his

  1211. strategy,

  1212. because of his

  1213. raw strength.

  1214. His victory

  1215. was a gift.

  1216. Now this guy

  1217. is by no means

  1218. the greatest

  1219. of biblical

  1220. heroes.

  1221. Even Hebrews

  1222. 11 gives

  1223. way much more

  1224. time and space

  1225. to Abraham

  1226. and Moses.

  1227. This man was

  1228. no superhero.

  1229. Among human

  1230. beings, there

  1231. is only one

  1232. whose faith

  1233. in God was

  1234. perfect.

  1235. And Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:2

  1236. 12,

  1237. verse 2,

  1238. calls us to

  1239. fix our eyes

  1240. on Jesus,

  1241. the pioneer

  1242. and the

  1243. perfecter of

  1244. our faith.

  1245. faith.

  1246. That is,

  1247. Jesus is the

  1248. perfect example

  1249. of faith.

  1250. He is the

  1251. one who had

  1252. complete confidence

  1253. in the word

  1254. of God.

  1255. Complete

  1256. confidence

  1257. that his

  1258. death via

  1259. the cross

  1260. would result

  1261. in victory.

  1262. This confidence

  1263. translated into

  1264. actions.

  1265. It says he

  1266. endured the

  1267. cross.

  1268. And further,

  1269. his faith was

  1270. based on what

  1271. lay ahead.

  1272. For the joy

  1273. set before

  1274. him, he

  1275. endured the

  1276. cross.

  1277. Jesus is

  1278. the perfect

  1279. example of

  1280. faith.

  1281. He is the

  1282. author of

  1283. faith.

  1284. That simply

  1285. means that

  1286. Jesus is the

  1287. one who wrote

  1288. the script on

  1289. what it means

  1290. to be a

  1291. person of

  1292. faith in

  1293. the word

  1294. of God.

  1295. Or what it

  1296. means to live

  1297. a life of

  1298. dependence and

  1299. obedience.

  1300. He is also

  1301. the perfecter

  1302. of our

  1303. faith.

  1304. Because he

  1305. knew that

  1306. you and I

  1307. and Barak

  1308. and Deborah

  1309. could not

  1310. do it.

  1311. He needed to

  1312. fulfill it for

  1313. us.

  1314. And so he

  1315. perfected it

  1316. for us.

  1317. Totally

  1318. obeyed his

  1319. father even

  1320. to death,

  1321. even death

  1322. on a cross.

  1323. And so

  1324. Hebrews tells

  1325. us you keep

  1326. your eyes fixed

  1327. on Jesus.

  1328. You keep your

  1329. eyes fixed on

  1330. him.

  1331. We are

  1332. called to

  1333. look to

  1334. him for

  1335. our hope.

  1336. Verse 3

  1337. says,

  1338. consider him

  1339. who endured

  1340. such opposition

  1341. from sinners

  1342. so that you

  1343. will not grow

  1344. weary and

  1345. lose heart.

  1346. What was the

  1347. problem of the

  1348. people of

  1349. Israel in the

  1350. time of

  1351. judges?

  1352. They

  1353. consistently

  1354. grew weary,

  1355. they consistently

  1356. lost heart,

  1357. they consistently

  1358. gave themselves

  1359. over to the

  1360. worship of

  1361. idols.

  1362. And this

  1363. passage says,

  1364. you keep

  1365. your eyes

  1366. fixed on

  1367. Jesus so

  1368. that you

  1369. don't do

  1370. that.

  1371. He is the

  1372. one who

  1373. motivates us,

  1374. who inspires

  1375. us, he's the

  1376. one who can

  1377. help us to

  1378. overcome our

  1379. weariness and

  1380. our half-heartedness

  1381. and our

  1382. worship of

  1383. idols.

  1384. The main

  1385. point of

  1386. Hebrews 12,

  1387. and I would

  1388. argue that

  1389. it's possibly

  1390. the application

  1391. for the

  1392. entire book

  1393. of Hebrews

  1394. is in

  1395. verse 1

  1396. of chapter

  1397. 12, and

  1398. it's one

  1399. three-letter

  1400. word right

  1401. there, and

  1402. it's the

  1403. word run.

  1404. That's the

  1405. application, in

  1406. my view, of

  1407. all of

  1408. Hebrews.

  1409. You fix

  1410. your eyes on

  1411. Jesus and

  1412. you run the

  1413. race of

  1414. perseverance.

  1415. I think that

  1416. everything else

  1417. supports it,

  1418. explains it,

  1419. gives motivation

  1420. for it.

  1421. Run the race

  1422. of faith in

  1423. Jesus.

  1424. Run the race

  1425. of set before

  1426. you.

  1427. Endure,

  1428. persevere,

  1429. run, fight,

  1430. be alert, be

  1431. strengthened,

  1432. don't drift,

  1433. don't neglect,

  1434. don't be

  1435. sluggish, don't

  1436. stroll, don't

  1437. meander, don't

  1438. wander aimlessly,

  1439. don't take your

  1440. eternal security

  1441. for granted.

  1442. Run the race

  1443. of perseverance.

  1444. Don't wander

  1445. around half-hearted,

  1446. flying over here,

  1447. worshipping this

  1448. idol and worshipping

  1449. this idol of the

  1450. heart.

  1451. It says he makes

  1452. it really clearly.

  1453. Fix your eyes on

  1454. Jesus, run the

  1455. race and get rid

  1456. of the sin that

  1457. trips you up.

  1458. Deal with your

  1459. idols is what it

  1460. says.

  1461. Deal with the

  1462. idols of the

  1463. heart and not

  1464. just the idols of

  1465. your heart which

  1466. are clearly sin,

  1467. it says get rid

  1468. of everything that

  1469. will slow you

  1470. down.

  1471. Don't ask of your

  1472. entertainment,

  1473. don't ask of your

  1474. downtime, don't ask

  1475. of your work,

  1476. don't ask of,

  1477. is it sin?

  1478. Ask the question,

  1479. is this going to

  1480. slow me?

  1481. Is it going to

  1482. hold me back?

  1483. Is it going to

  1484. put Jesus in a

  1485. second place in

  1486. any way?

  1487. Don't ask,

  1488. is it sin?

  1489. Ask, is it going

  1490. to slow me from

  1491. running the race of

  1492. perseverance of

  1493. obedience to

  1494. Christ?

  1495. This passage is

  1496. saying risk

  1497. everything for

  1498. Christ.

  1499. if there's one

  1500. thing that I want

1501. to do in my time

  1502. at St. Paul's and

  1503. have been trying to

  1504. do with us at

  1505. St. Paul's is to

  1506. build a church

  1507. culture that risks

  1508. everything for the

  1509. glory of God.

  1510. We will stop doing

  1511. things and we will

  1512. start doing things

  1513. and we will

  1514. consistently call for

  1515. sacrifice.

  1516. Because Jesus is

  1517. the author and the

  1518. perfecter of our

  1519. faith.

  1520. So what about

  1521. you?

  1522. What's he calling

  1523. you to?

  1524. It's, you know, I

  1525. mean, let's put this

  1526. in perspective.

  1527. He's not asking you

  1528. to run down a

  1529. hill into chariots

  1530. when he's saying

  1531. take the risk and

  1532. join a community

  1533. group.

  1534. Is he?

  1535. Take the risk of

  1536. relationship with

  1537. people and join a

  1538. community group.

  1539. He's not asking you

  1540. to charge at 900

  1541. iron chariots when

  1542. he says, you know,

  1543. come to church

  1544. every week and

  1545. encourage your

  1546. brothers and sisters

  1547. and sing my

  1548. glorious name.

  1549. That's not a,

  1550. but it's a risk,

  1551. isn't it?

  1552. When he's

  1553. calling you to be

  1554. radically generous,

  1555. he's not asking you

1556. to run down a hill

  1557. into 900 chariots.

  1558. He's asking you to

  1559. bring a friend to

  1560. Christ when he's

  1561. asking you to

  1562. surrender the

  1563. idols.

  1564. He's not asking

  1565. you to run down

  1566. at 900 chariots,

  1567. but he is calling

  1568. you to risk.

  1569. Are you hearing

  1570. him?

  1571. Are you obeying

  1572. him?

  1573. Run as if you

  1574. are in a race

  1575. with a finishing

  1576. line and

  1577. everything is

  1578. hanging on that

  1579. finish line.

  1580. Everything.

  1581. Fight the fight

  1582. of faith on the

  1583. basis of Christ's

  1584. spectacular death

  1585. and resurrection

  1586. and show your

  1587. faith the way

  1588. the Barak,

  1589. Deborah,

  1590. Jael,

  1591. and the saints

  1592. of Hebrews 11

  1593. did,

  1594. not by

  1595. coasting through

  1596. life,

  1597. but by doing

  1598. what God

  1599. called them to

  1600. do and doing

  1601. it immediately,

  1602. even at great

  1603. personal cost.

  1604. Thank you.

  1605. Thank you.
