  1. cavalry commander in the American Civil Wars and the Indian Wars. Today he is remembered for the

  2. disastrous military engagement known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the 25th of June 1876,

  3. where he died along with 260 soldiers, all of them, the whole company was wiped out,

  4. included Custer, his two brothers, a nephew, so a bunch of his family members were killed there as

  5. well. This is a man who had quite humble origins. He was born into a poor and obscure family somewhere

  6. in the Midwest. Throughout his life, Custer was known as someone to test the boundaries

  7. and the rules consistently. In his four years as a West Point cadet, he amassed a record.

  8. This day, it's a record to this day. It's a record of 726 demerit points.

  9. The worst conduct recorded in the history of the academy. And during his rocky tenure at the academy,

  10. Custer came close to expulsion on every single year he was there due to the excessive amounts of his

  11. demerits. There were 34 cadets in his year at West Point and at graduation, he ranked number 34.

  12. This is a man who had origins, both humble origins, both in life and in his career.

  13. During the American Civil War, he was regarded by soldiers as a great leader, always willing to do

  14. the toughest jobs. His reputation spread at the age of 23. He became the youngest major general in

  15. American military history. And it was during his rise to fame as a leader that he fell in love with

  16. publicity of himself, about himself. For those who knew him, those who served under him or with him,

  17. particularly in his latter years, he became known for his vanity and his desire for personal glory.

  18. Some historians even suggest that it's because of his pride and his vanity and his desire for personal

  19. glory that 260 men died with him at the little bighorn. All too often, this is the case, is it not,

  20. where success leads to pride, leads to boasting, it leads to conceit, it leads to downfall.

  21. Boasting, encouraging others, and in fact, even our own hearts, to give us glory,

  22. is opposed to, and even saps life out of true faith. Conceit, being hungry for honour and glory,

  23. is the cousin of boasting. So there's three things I want us to see today in this text. I want to see,

  24. first of all, the strength in weakness. I want to see, secondly, triumphant weakness. And thirdly,

  25. how to finish with triumphant weakness. So firstly, strength in weakness. Judges 6, as we saw last week,

  26. Gideon is chosen by God to save Israel from the Midianites, who have been oppressing them for seven

  27. years. At the beginning of chapter 7, we now get battle time, and two armies are facing each other off.

  28. Before he goes into battle, God wants to teach Gideon and the rest of his people,

  29. who actually deserves glory for the salvation that they're about to receive.

  30. And it starts with advice that Gideon gets in verse 2, and you won't find this advice in any

  31. military manual. Now, this is the verse that interprets the rest of chapter 7 and into chapter 8.

  32. God's people will either praise God for their victory, or they will praise, they will boast in

  33. themselves. Gideon will either give the honour to his Lord, or he will seek it for himself.

  34. Human nature is such that if there is the tiniest opportunity for us to boast in our own work,

  35. we will. Notice that God says in verse 2, that any such boasting is against me.

  36. As soon as we begin to believe that we deserve the credit for rescuing or for delivering ourselves,

  37. what we do in that moment is we take glory from God for delivering us, a glory that he deserves

  38. alone. And as soon as we rob glory from God, it's called idolatry.

  39. And we set ourselves up as alternative saviors. And this has to be the greatest spiritual danger

  40. there is, that we should believe that we can save ourselves or have saved ourselves in any way.

  41. And Christianity is so clear on this. Salvation is by God's gracious action.

  42. We don't earn it with our own actions at all. And so what God does here is he reduces the number of

  43. soldiers because he knows that the men are too many. There's too many for Israel to see clearly

  44. where the praise and the glory is going to go for the victory that's about to come.

  45. And so God decreases their numbers in two ways. Firstly, Gideon says that anyone here

  46. anyone here at all who's too scared to fight, you can go home. And that shaves his army by two thirds.

  47. 22,000 go home.

  48. You know, imagine being the first person. That's me, guys. I'm out of here.

  49. Imagine being the one, you know, walking home to your family, to your community, and they're thinking,

  50. what, it's over already? Nah, it's not over yet. I was just too scared. So I've just come home.

  51. And imagine being there when the rest who do fight the battle come home.

  52. Like, you know, pin a yellow ribbon on them all.

  53. These guys publicly admit that they have no heart for the battle.

  54. But 10,000 who were either too scared to go home or too scared to stay.

  55. The 10,000 stayed anyway.

  56. And in verse 4, that's still too many.

  57. And so the second group were sent home after, well, for obscure reasons.

  58. The way that they drank water.

  59. Now, the text does not say why God picked the drinking test.

  60. It isn't about the quality of the fighting men.

  61. The first test potentially was, if you're too scared, go home because you're useless to us anyway.

  62. But the second test was not about the quality of the fighting men.

  63. And they separate out 9,700 who knelt down and put their mouths to the water to drink.

  64. The 300 who cut the water into their hands, these are the ones chosen for the battle.

  65. And if you're one of the 300, you have to go, oh my goodness.

  66. We start the day with 32,000 men.

  67. And now we've got 300, a reduction of over 99% of our numbers.

  68. And the reduction in numbers, as verse 2 says, is that they will not boast about the victory.

  69. Gideon and the army with him should look back and say, oh, this is clear.

  70. This victory is clearly God's, not mine.

  71. My only part in this was to trust and obey.

  72. The glory is God's.

  73. The privilege is mine.

  74. God has allowed me, allowed us to be part of what he's doing.

  75. It's our privilege, but the glory is his.

  76. And the rest of Israel, including the 31,700 who went home, should praise God.

  77. We weren't even there.

  78. God rescued us without us even doing anything.

  79. Praise God.

  80. We see this principle of salvation right through the book of Judges,

  81. and we see it in the rest of the Bible.

  82. God's power is most clearly displayed through weakness.

  83. In 2 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul has been privileged with a vision of heaven.

  84. And yet he suffers from what he calls a thorn in the flesh,

  85. a messenger of Satan that was sent to torment me.

  86. And Paul pleads with God several times to take it away, but God doesn't do it.

  87. And he doesn't do it.

  88. And Paul says, this is the reason why he didn't do it.

  89. In order to keep me from becoming conceited because of the vision of greatness and splendor that I saw.

  90. In other words, God is keeping Paul from being hungry for his own honor,

  91. hungry for his own glory, boasting about his own strength, his own experiences.

  92. And so therefore he has this thorn.

  93. And Paul learns here in 2 Corinthians what God wants Gideon to learn,

  94. what he wants his 300 to learn, what he wants Israel to learn,

  95. what he wants us to learn.

  96. It's in 2 Corinthians 12 verse 9.

    2 Corinthians 12:9

  97. God's power is most clearly displayed in our weakness, our frailty.

  98. And Paul went on to write this,

  99. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly because of my weaknesses,

  100. so that Christ's power may rest on me.

  101. That is why for Christ's sake I delight in weaknesses,

  102. in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.

  103. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  104. God does not work despite our weaknesses, but because of our weaknesses.

  105. He says that his saving power does not work when we are strong or when we think we're strong,

  106. but rather when we are weak and when we know that we are weak.

  107. So let me just push that point a little bit further and tease out some principles.

  108. This is so important because we exist in a culture which is hungry for power.

  109. It's a success-driven culture that is hungry for power.

  110. Firstly, this principle is the basis of salvation in the Christian faith.

  111. We cannot be saved if we think that we are good and we are able.

  112. God's saving power only works on us when we admit that we are not worthy.

  113. We have got no goodness in ourselves.

  114. It also explains how repentance works in the Christian life.

  115. It is only as we repent and express sorrow over sin and failures before God

  116. that his love and his grace become so much more precious to us,

  117. so much more real for us.

  118. If someone says to you, or says to me,

  119. Hey Steve, I've paid a debt for you.

  120. I don't know how overjoyed I should be in that moment

  121. until I understand which debt it is and how big it is.

  122. You see, jumping up at a cafe and paying for my coffee

  123. and coming back and say I've just paid for everything,

  124. well, that's fantastic.

  125. That does not compare to the hugs from me

  126. and the kisses you'll receive from me

  127. if you've just paid out my entire mortgage.

  128. There's a different level of gratitude at that point.

  129. Always grateful for you to buy me a coffee,

  130. but the bigger we understand our debt to be,

  131. the greater the joy in its payment will be.

  132. It is only as we see our weakness and our frailty

  133. and our failure and our sin

  134. that the strength of knowing God's grace and his love comes to us.

  135. Jesus made the same point, Luke 7 verse 47,

    Luke 7:47

  136. where someone who thinks there is little in them that needs forgiving

  137. will in fact love little.

  138. And this is the principle on display here in Judges 7.

  139. Gideon and Israel with him were going to be tempted

  140. to put their confidence in their fighting men,

  141. but God removes virtually all of them

  142. so that they will trust in God in new ways.

  143. As they prepare to fight the Midianite army

  144. and look around at the 300,

  145. just a few extra than what's sitting in this room,

  146. they should feel weak.

  147. They should feel extremely weak.

  148. In the same way we should feel weak

  149. when we look at the mission field that God has given us

  150. and the many number of people that are yet to know Christ.

  151. They will only go into battle if they know

  152. that while they are weak,

  153. so is the strongest army against their God.

  154. So secondly, triumphant weakness.

  155. It's at this point,

  156. as Gideon is grappling with his weakness,

  157. that God gives Gideon assurance of victory.

  158. It's such wonderful thoughtfulness at this point

  159. that the sovereign God here says to Gideon in verse 10,

  160. if you are afraid to attack,

  161. which I'd imagined you would be in this moment,

  162. go down to the camp with your servant,

  163. servant Pera,

  164. and listen to what they are saying,

  165. and afterwards you'll be encouraged to attack the camp.

  166. So he heads down to the camp

  167. and the first sight of this camp

  168. must have been terrifying.

  169. Verse 12,

  170. the Midianites,

  171. the Amalekites,

  172. and all their mates from the eastern peoples

  173. have settled in the valley

  174. and thick as locusts,

  175. their camels could no more be counted

  176. than the sand on the seashore.

  177. He's like,

  178. well, that's good.

  179. We've got 300.

  180. And it's of no coincidence at all

  181. that he sets up,

  182. you know,

  183. in the darkness beside the tent of a Midianite

  184. who's just woken up from a nightmare.

  185. A loaf of bread

  186. has just rolled through the camp

  187. and flattened the tents.

  188. Nightmare stuff.

  189. Like,

  190. can you just imagine it?

  191. No kid of mine

  192. has ever run into my bedroom

  193. crying with tears.

  194. I've just been attacked

  195. by a loaf of bread.

  196. I mean,

  197. this guy's

  198. just so scared

  199. of a loaf of bread

  200. on a rampage

  201. and he's woken his mate up

  202. and his mate wakes up

  203. and goes,

  204. oh my goodness,

  205. that must be Gideon.

  206. Gideon.

  207. The loaf of bread

  208. must be Gideon.

  209. What?

  210. How did you make that connection?

  211. Should be his next question.

  212. the Midianites

  213. would have been

  214. no more concerned

  215. of 32,000 men

  216. than they would be

  217. of a loaf of bread.

  218. These are the 32,000 men

  219. who they've oppressed

  220. beautifully for seven years.

  221. Why would they be scared of them?

  222. unless God has put fear

  223. in their hearts.

  224. God's working on them as well.

  225. It reveals something

  226. very significant.

  227. Underneath

  228. underneath

  229. the armor

  230. of this vast army

  231. are trembling hearts

  232. fearful hearts

  233. weak hearts

  234. and Gideon

  235. has heard

  236. the assurance

  237. of God

  238. through the

  239. oddest of channels

  240. and now we see

  241. Gideon

  242. in his

  243. finest moment.

  244. This is him

  245. in his finest moment

  246. in all three chapters

  247. of Judges.

  248. He's on his knees

  249. in worship.

  250. This is

  251. his

  252. Gethsemane moment.

  253. He's now

  254. surrendered

  255. to the will of God.

  256. He goes back

  257. to his men

  258. with this message

  259. in verse 15.

  260. Get up.

  261. The Lord

  262. has given

  263. the Midianite camp

  264. into your hands.

  265. Notice two things

  266. about that statement.

  267. Notice he doesn't say

  268. my hand

  269. God promised him

  270. I'm going to give

  271. the Midianite army

  272. into your hand

  273. and now he says

  274. it's not my hand

  275. it's your hands.

  276. He wants

  277. his men

  278. these 300

  279. to have

  280. the same confidence

  281. that he has

  282. in this God.

  283. And secondly

  284. that confidence

  285. is in the fact

  286. that God

  287. has given

  288. them into his hands.

  289. It's past tense.

  290. The battle

  291. has been won

  292. even though

  293. the fight

  294. has yet to begin.

  295. the plan

  296. is executed.

  297. The chosen

  298. weapons

  299. are

  300. torches

  301. in

  302. jars

  303. of clay

  304. and horns.

  305. That's it.

  306. Jar of clay

  307. throw a torch

  308. in there

  309. put a light

  310. in the jar

  311. of clay

  312. and a horn

  313. to make a racket.

  314. they surrounded

  315. the camp

  316. and the 300

  317. blew their horns

  318. they smashed

  319. their jars

  320. of clay

  321. the lamps

  322. illuminated

  323. and the

  324. Midians

  325. ran

  326. out

  327. crying out

  328. in fear

  329. and it says

  330. in verse 22

  331. that the Lord

  332. caused

  333. there to be

  334. such a panic

  335. in the darkness

  336. that they

  337. were killing

  338. each other.

  339. How many

  340. men

  341. did the 300

  342. kill?

  343. Not a single

  344. one.

  345. Not a single

  346. one.

  347. None of them

  348. could return

  349. home and say

  350. hey did you

  351. see me

  352. you know

  353. with my sword

  354. and how

  355. skilled I was

  356. with it.

  357. None of them

  358. could go home

  359. and cry about

  360. what they've done

  361. but only

  362. what they had

  363. watched God

  364. do in that

  365. moment

  366. with this

  367. vast army.

  368. This is God's

  369. battle

  370. and he alone

  371. claimed the

  372. victory.

  373. Gideon is

  374. mentioned

  375. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:32–34

  376. chapter 11

  377. verses 32

  378. to 34

  379. as a man

  380. of faith.

  381. That's what he's

  382. known for

  383. as a man

  384. of faith

  385. and this

  386. is the most

  387. impressive

  388. thing about

  389. Gideon.

  390. When Gideon

  391. rises from

  392. his knees

  393. after hearing

  394. the dream

  395. that the

  396. enemy

  397. of his

  398. enemy

  399. hasn't

  400. he hasn't

  401. seen

  402. God do

  403. anything at

  404. this point.

  405. He hasn't

  406. seen a

  407. Midianite

  408. die.

  409. He has

  410. however seen

  411. the awesome

  412. power of

  413. God

  414. and he

  415. isn't afraid

  416. anymore

  417. in that

  418. moment.

  419. and he

  420. is set

  421. free

  422. to attempt

  423. the

  424. impossible

  425. relying

  426. on the

  427. promise

  428. of God

  429. alone.

  430. As

  431. Hebrews

  432. 11 says

  433. of Gideon

  434. weakness

  435. was turned

  436. to strength

  437. who became

  438. powerful in

  439. battle

  440. and routed

  441. foreign

  442. armies.

  443. His

  444. weakness

  445. was turned

  446. to strength

  447. by faith

  448. in the

  449. sovereign

  450. saving

  451. God.

  452. Now this

  453. whole

  454. passage in

  455. Judges 7

  456. has so

  457. many arms

  458. into the

  459. New Testament

  460. but it

  461. does recall

  462. to me

  463. one

  464. to mind

  465. one passage

  466. that's in

  467. fact encouraging

  468. Christians

  469. to not

  470. lose heart

  471. when they

  472. see their

  473. weakness

  474. to

  475. Corinthians

  476. 4

  477. for what

  478. we preach

  479. is not

  480. ourselves

  481. but Jesus

  482. Christ

  483. as Lord

  484. and

  485. ourselves

  486. as your

  487. servants

  488. for Jesus

  489. sake

  490. for God

  491. who said

  492. let light

  493. shine out of

  494. darkness

  495. made his

  496. light shine

  497. in our

  498. hearts

  499. to give

  500. us the

  501. light of

  502. the knowledge

  503. of God's

  504. glory

  505. displayed in

  506. the face

  507. of Christ

  508. God's

  509. but we

  510. have this

  511. treasure

  512. in

  513. jars

  514. of clay

  515. to show

  516. that this

  517. all

  518. surpassing

  519. power

  520. is from

  521. God

  522. and not

  523. of

  524. ourselves

  525. now I

  526. don't know

  527. whether

  528. Paul had

  529. Judges 7

  530. in mind

  531. when he

  532. wrote

  533. that

  534. but

  535. it

  536. resonates

  537. with it

  538. these

  539. verses

  540. are about

  541. the fight

  542. that the

  543. Christian

  544. is involved

  545. in

  546. one that

  547. we will

  548. lose

  549. heart

  550. if we

  551. rely upon

  552. our own

  553. power

  554. and our

  555. own

  556. strength

  557. and our

  558. own

  559. enabling

  560. instead of

  561. God's

  562. enabling

  563. and God

  564. uses the

  565. same

  566. strategy

  567. here

  568. strength

  569. in

  570. weakness

  571. we

  572. are

  573. according

  574. to 2

  575. Corinthians

  576. the

  577. breakable

  578. jar

  579. clays

  580. with

  581. something

  582. precious

  583. on the

  584. inside

  585. it's

  586. the

  587. light

  588. that

  589. shines

  590. in

  591. the

  592. darkness

  593. that

  594. expels

  595. the

  596. darkness

  597. it's

  598. the

  599. light

  600. of

  601. the

  602. knowledge

  603. of

  604. God's

  605. glory

  606. displayed

  607. in

  608. the

  609. face

  610. of

  611. Christ

  612. the

  613. magnificence

  614. of

  615. God's

  616. glory

  617. is

  618. displayed

  619. in

  620. the

  621. face

  622. of

  623. Christ

  624. and

  625. that

  626. glory

  627. is

  628. displayed

  629. in

  630. all

  631. its

  632. brilliance

  633. when

  634. Jesus

  635. is

  636. on

  637. the

  638. cross

  639. in

  640. all

  641. his

  642. weakness

  643. there's

  644. nothing

  645. impressive

  646. about

  647. the

  648. Lord

  649. Jesus

  650. as

  651. Isaiah

  652. tells

  653. us

  654. he

  655. came

  656. into

  657. this

  658. world

  659. in

  660. obscurity

  661. he

  662. was

  663. rejected

  664. and

  665. maligned

  666. by

  667. virtually

  668. everyone

  669. accused

  670. of

  671. wrongdoing

  672. died

  673. the

  674. death

  675. of

  676. a

  677. hardened

  678. criminal

  679. he

  680. who

  681. as

  682. we

  683. seen

  684. often

  685. around

  686. Christmas

  687. time

  688. he

  689. who

  690. hung

  691. the

  692. starry

  693. skies

  694. surrendered

  695. his

  696. hands

  697. to

  698. cruel

  699. nails

  700. he

  701. who

  702. wore

  703. the

  704. crown

  705. as

  706. creator

  707. and ruler

  708. of all

  709. allowed

  710. a

  711. crude

  712. crown

  713. of

  714. thorns

  715. to be

  716. twisted

  717. and

  718. placed

  719. on

  720. his

  721. head

  722. mocked

  723. with

  724. the

  725. words

  726. you

  727. who

  728. saved

  729. others

  730. save

  731. yourself

  732. in

  733. other

  734. words

  735. display

  736. your

  737. strength

  738. and

  739. save

  740. yourself

  741. and

  742. the

  743. great

  744. irony

  745. is

  746. that

  747. if

  748. he

  749. had

  750. chosen

  751. strength

  752. over

  753. weakness

  754. in

  755. that

  756. moment

  757. we

  758. would

  759. be

  760. the

  761. ones

  762. who

  763. would

  764. be

  765. crushed

  766. placed

  767. in a

  768. tomb

  769. but on

  770. the

  771. third

  772. day

  773. rose

  774. triumphant

  775. and he

  776. now

  777. has

  778. the

  779. name

  780. as

  781. Philippians

  782. 2

  783. says

  784. it

  785. is

  786. above

  787. every

  788. name

  789. every

  790. name

  791. and

  792. everyone

  793. will

  794. one

  795. day

  796. surrender

  797. to

  798. this

  799. lamb

  800. who

  801. sits

  802. on

  803. the

  804. throne

  805. of

  806. the

  807. universe

  808. as

  809. 2

  810. corinthians

  811. 13

  812. 3

  813. and 4

  814. say

  815. jesus

  816. was

  817. crucified

  818. in

  819. weakness

  820. but he

  821. lives

  822. by the

  823. power

  824. of

  825. god

  826. now

  827. strength

  828. in

  829. weakness

  830. is the

  831. gospel

  832. the

  833. son

  834. of

  835. god

  836. who

  837. laid

  838. aside

  839. all

  840. of

  841. his

  842. glory

  843. surrendered

  844. himself

  845. to

  846. death

  847. for

  848. our

  849. sakes

  850. displays

  851. the

  852. magnificent

  853. glory

  854. of god

  855. to

  856. this

  857. world

  858. the

  859. great

  860. encouragement

  861. of these

  862. verses

  863. in 2

  864. corinthians

  865. 4

  866. is that

  867. this

  868. god

  869. uses

  870. weakness

  871. he

  872. uses

  873. weary

  874. people

  875. he

  876. uses

  877. ordinary

  878. jars

  879. of clay

  880. to

  881. display

  882. to

  883. this

  884. world

  885. the

  886. light

  887. of the

  888. glory

  889. of god

  890. in the

  891. face

  892. of christ

  893. our

  894. weakness

  895. is not

  896. a

  897. hindrance

  898. weakness

  899. is the

  900. way of

  901. the

  902. gospel

  903. and

  904. 2

  905. corinthians

  906. calls

  907. christians

  908. in the

  909. midst

  910. of

  911. a

  912. world

  913. where

  914. they're

  915. seeing

  916. the

  917. gospel

  918. rejected

  919. do

  920. not

  921. lose

  922. heart

  923. do

  924. not

  925. lose

  926. heart

  927. in the

  928. vision

  929. in the

  930. mission

  931. let us

  932. press

  933. on in

  934. the

  935. task

  936. of

  937. proclaiming

  938. christ

  939. as

  940. lord

  941. out

  942. of

  943. hearts

  944. of

  945. love

  946. and

  947. lives

  948. of

  949. service

  950. while

  951. looking

  952. to

  953. god

  954. to

  955. push

  956. out

  957. darkness

  958. with

  959. the

  960. light

  961. of

  962. the

  963. glory

  964. of

  965. the

  966. gospel

  967. of

  968. the

  969. lord

  970. jesus

  971. in

  972. the

  973. hearts

  974. of

  975. so

  976. many

  977. losing

  978. heart

  979. is

  980. where

  981. we

  982. forget

  983. the

  984. gospel

  985. where

  986. we

  987. forget

  988. that

  989. we

  990. are

  991. weak

  992. and

  993. unimpressive

  994. and

  995. the

  996. real

  997. treasure

  998. is

  999. the

  1000. gospel

  1001. of

  1002. the

  1003. lord

  1004. jesus

  1005. christ

  1006. losing

  1007. heart

  1008. is

  1009. starting

  1010. to

  1011. think

  1012. more

  1013. of

  1014. ourselves

  1015. and

  1016. less

  1017. of

  1018. the

  1019. gospel

  1020. starting

  1021. to claim

  1022. victory

  1023. for

  1024. ourselves

  1025. starting

  1026. to be

  1027. impressed

  1028. with

  1029. ourselves

  1030. and

  1031. so

  1032. thirdly

  1033. finishing

  1034. in

  1035. triumphant

  1036. weakness

  1037. it's

  1038. calling

  1039. us

  1040. to

  1041. finish

  1042. our

  1043. course

  1044. in

  1045. triumphant

  1046. weakness

  1047. and

  1048. it's

  1049. tragic

  1050. to

  1051. see

  1052. how

  1053. gideon

  1054. finished

  1055. there

  1056. is

  1057. something

  1058. really

  1059. unusual

  1060. in

  1061. this

  1062. judges

  1063. cycle

  1064. with

  1065. gideon

  1066. in

  1067. the

  1068. previous

  1069. cycles

  1070. if you

  1071. remember

  1072. the

  1073. only

  1074. details

  1075. that are

  1076. given

  1077. after

  1078. the

  1079. battle

  1080. after

  1081. the

  1082. victory

  1083. is

  1084. the

  1085. length

  1086. of

  1087. peace

  1088. that

  1089. there

  1090. was

  1091. under

  1092. the

  1093. judge's

  1094. rule

  1095. and

  1096. then

  1097. the

  1098. judge

  1099. dies

  1100. and

  1101. then

  1102. we

  1103. see

  1104. it

  1105. all

  1106. happens

  1107. again

  1108. new

  1109. cycle

  1110. starts

  1111. not

  1112. this

  1113. time

  1114. what

  1115. we

  1116. see

  1117. this

  1118. time

  1119. is

  1120. that

  1121. the

  1122. people

  1123. start

  1124. to

  1125. back

  1126. slide

  1127. under

  1128. the

  1129. judge's

  1130. rule

  1131. not

  1132. after

  1133. it

  1134. this

  1135. is

  1136. while

  1137. the

  1138. judge

  1139. is

  1140. still

  1141. alive

  1142. and

  1143. we

  1144. start

  1145. to

  1146. see

  1147. some

  1148. deep

  1149. flaws

  1150. in

  1151. gideon's

  1152. rule

  1153. and

  1154. the

  1155. writer

  1156. here

  1157. dedicates

  1158. two

  1159. chapters

  1160. to

  1161. it

  1162. in

  1163. chapter

  1164. eight

  1165. we

  1166. see

  1167. gideon's

  1168. need

  1169. for

  1170. respect

  1171. and

  1172. honour

  1173. and

  1174. his

  1175. violent

  1176. bitter

  1177. rage

  1178. when

  1179. he

  1180. fails

  1181. to be

  1182. given

  1183. the

  1184. honour

  1185. that

  1186. he

  1187. thinks

  1188. he

  1189. deserves

  1190. success

  1191. against

  1192. the

  1193. midianites

  1194. was

  1195. the

  1196. worst

  1197. thing

  1198. for

  1199. gideon

  1200. there

  1201. is

  1202. a

  1203. terrible

  1204. spiritual

  1205. danger

  1206. receiving

  1207. any

  1208. blessing

  1209. success

  1210. can

  1211. easily

  1212. cause

  1213. us

  1214. to

  1215. forget

  1216. god's

  1217. good

  1218. grace

  1219. because

  1220. our

  1221. hearts

  1222. are

  1223. so

  1224. desperate

  1225. to

  1226. believe

  1227. that

  1228. we

  1229. can

  1230. save

  1231. ourselves

  1232. failure

  1233. causes

  1234. us

  1235. to

  1236. evaluate

  1237. our

  1238. hearts

  1239. and

  1240. our

  1241. priorities

  1242. success

  1243. just

  1244. affirms

  1245. what we

  1246. already

  1247. thought

  1248. was

  1249. true

  1250. of

  1251. ourselves

  1252. that

  1253. we

  1254. can

  1255. fulfill

  1256. and

  1257. we

  1258. can

  1259. control

  1260. ourselves

  1261. and

  1262. in

  1263. chapter

  1264. eight

  1265. gideon

  1266. has

  1267. forgotten

  1268. who

  1269. called

  1270. him

  1271. who

  1272. equipped

  1273. him

  1274. who

  1275. reassured

  1276. him

  1277. and won

  1278. the

  1279. battle

  1280. for

  1281. him

  1282. and

  1283. gideon's

  1284. ego

  1285. is

  1286. stroked

  1287. when

  1288. israel

  1289. asked

  1290. him

  1291. to

  1292. be

  1293. their

  1294. king

  1295. in

  1296. verse

  1297. 22

  1298. rule

  1299. over

  1300. us

  1301. you

  1302. your

  1303. son

  1304. and

  1305. your

  1306. grandson

  1307. because

  1308. you

  1309. have

  1310. saved

  1311. us

  1312. from

  1313. the

  1314. hand

  1315. of

  1316. midian

  1317. and

  1318. the

  1319. very

  1320. next

  1321. verse

  1322. is

  1323. the

  1324. last

  1325. time

  1326. gideon

  1327. remembers

  1328. the

  1329. gracious

  1330. actions

  1331. of

  1332. god

  1333. on

  1334. his

  1335. behalf

  1336. it's

  1337. the

  1338. last

  1339. time

  1340. he

  1341. mentions

  1342. god

  1343. but

  1344. gideon

  1345. told

  1346. them

  1347. i

  1348. will

  1349. not

  1350. rule

  1351. over

  1352. you

  1353. nor

  1354. will

  1355. your

  1356. son

  1357. my

  1358. son

  1359. rule

  1360. over

  1361. you

  1362. the

  1363. lord

  1364. will

  1365. rule

  1366. over

  1367. you

  1368. now

  1369. ironically

  1370. and

  1371. tragically

  1372. he

  1373. almost

  1374. immediately

  1375. contradicts

  1376. himself

  1377. when

  1378. he

  1379. starts

  1380. acting

  1381. like

  1382. a

  1383. king

  1384. he

  1385. asks

  1386. for

  1387. financial

  1388. reward

  1389. for

  1390. delivering

  1391. them

  1392. in

  1393. verse

  1394. 24

  1395. in

  1396. the

  1397. very

  1398. next

  1399. verse

  1400. and

  1401. he

  1402. becomes

  1403. a

  1404. very

  1405. rich

  1406. man

  1407. through

  1408. it

  1409. he

  1410. takes

  1411. the

  1412. riches

  1413. he

  1414. makes

  1415. an

  1416. ephod

  1417. like

  1418. the

  1419. ones

  1420. worn

  1421. by

  1422. the

  1423. high
