  1. Groundhog Day is an obscure tradition in North America.

  2. It's in little parts of North America.

  3. It's not right across North America.

  4. It was popularized by the 1993 movie which starred Bill Murray.

  5. It's celebrated on the 2nd of February when the groundhog,

  6. which is really just this furry creature thing,

  7. comes out of its hole from hibernation.

  8. And if the animal sees a shadow, that is if the weather is sunny,

  9. it goes back into its hole because there's six more weeks of winter weather to come.

  10. If not, apparently spring's coming early.

  11. No scientific fact to it, but a good reason for a party, I suspect.

  12. Now, Groundhog Day also describes a situation

  13. in which a series of unwelcome or tedious events

  14. to reappear again and again and again in exactly the same way.

  15. And that's what you feel when you put up the book of Judges

  16. and as you read through it, it's like, oh, here we go again.

  17. We're back into the same cycle again.

  18. And that's what we're going to see as we launch into Judges.

  19. We have this depressing and this familiar cycle in chapter 10, verse 6.

  20. Again, the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord

  21. and they served the Baals and the Ashtoreths

  22. and the gods of Aram and the gods of Sidon,

  23. the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites

  24. and the gods of the Philistines.

  25. So again, we have this picture of idolatry and slavery with Israel.

  26. The Baals and the Ashtoreths, they were the gods of the native Canaanites.

  27. This is the land in which they're in.

  28. And so this is their native gods, their idols.

  29. But notice there are other idols, other gods that are mentioned here as well.

  30. Notice that it says the gods of Aram, they weren't, these are not part of Canaan.

  31. This is Aram, they're up to the northwest.

  32. Sidon, they're up to the north.

  33. Moab and Ammon are to the east.

  34. And then the Philistines are to the south.

  35. And all of these nations belonged outside of Canaan,

  36. but they came into Canaan to oppress the Israelites.

  37. Now, if you've been listening all the way through this series,

  38. then you will remember that in chapter 3, way back then,

  39. we saw that Othniel, remember him?

  40. He helped Israel out of its bind with the king of Aram.

  41. Ehud, we all remember him because he's the guy stuck the sword in the fat guy.

  42. He was against the Ammonites and the Moabites.

  43. And Shamgar, we just went straight over him.

  44. He only got one verse, really, so we just missed him.

  45. He helped Israel against the Philistines.

  46. And in chapter 5, it was Deborah against the Canaanites.

  47. So what we get here is that every time Israel worshipped the idols of a nation,

  48. that nation ended up oppressing Israel.

  49. And this time, it's the God of the Ammonites and the Philistines.

  50. Verse 7 tells us that this is the consequence of them worshipping their gods.

  51. He, that's God, became angry with them.

  52. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites.

  53. This is the key idea here.

  54. Idolatry leads to enslavement.

  55. And enslavement leads to idolatry.

  56. Now, that doesn't seem logical.

  57. Let's unpack that.

  58. That does not seem logical.

  59. You would think that once a nation like Israel was oppressed by these other nations,

  60. Israel would hate the gods of the nations who they were worshipping that led them into slavery.

  61. They'd wake up one day and go, oh, we hate those gods.

  62. They've not been good to us.

  63. But that's not the case.

  64. The Ammonites had oppressed Israel in chapter 3, verse 13.

  65. And here is Israel serving their gods, which in turn leads to enslavement to the Ammonites once again.

  66. Despite their pain and their misery, Israel continued to worship the same idols that brought them the pain and the misery.

  67. It makes no sense.

  68. It is so easy to sit back here and look at the futility of Israel's behaviour.

  69. What's wrong with you guys?

  70. I wonder whether we can see ours in the same way.

  71. Let me remind you of our definition of idolatry.

  72. You'll find it right there in the little, you know, fine print at the bottom of your service outline.

  73. Idolatry is taking a good aspect of creation, a gift from God, marriage, days at the beach, business, family, money,

  74. and turning it into the ultimate source of security, comfort, identity and power.

  75. It's taking a good thing and making it an ultimate thing.

  76. I've given you a chart there on idolatry and a whole different bits of idolatry.

  77. Ripped it straight out of Tim Keller and his book, Gospel Driven Life.

  78. It's really helpful.

  79. The point here is that our hearts still assure us that when an idol leads to slavery and misery,

  80. that we seem to think that we need more of that idol.

  81. For instance, imagine someone who seeks value and purpose in relationship.

  82. That's where their real sense of worth is, is when they feel loved by someone else.

  83. And they live that out by sacrificing everything in order to get into a marriage.

  84. And that marriage fails.

  85. What happens then?

  86. What normally happens, what we see in our world,

  87. is that they think that what I need now is another relationship.

  88. But what I need is a better relationship than the last one.

  89. But I need another relationship.

  90. And so the cycle repeats.

  91. Again and again and again.

  92. We don't seem to ever think that the issue is, in fact, idol worship.

  93. Our behavior tells us that the issue is not our worship of idols,

  94. but that we are not worshiping the idol enough.

  95. And that is Israel's behavior here.

  96. Verse 7 tells us that God, in his settled anger at idolatry,

  97. sold them into the hands of their enemies.

  98. That's a very strong phrase.

  99. In fact, it's the strongest phrase so far of God's dealing with his people in the book of Judges.

  100. You see, when you sell a car to another person,

  101. it means that that new owner can do with it what they want to do with it.

  102. It's theirs.

  103. They can do with it.

  104. You know, you might have caught it gertie or whatever.

  105. You know, no longer does that apply.

  106. It might have been your child, you know, extra member.

  107. You might have treated really well and washed it and polished.

  108. Once they get it, it's theirs.

  109. They can drive it into another car if they want.

  110. They can do whatever they want.

  111. You no longer own it.

  112. Now, we know from the history of God dealing with these rebellious people

  113. that this doesn't mean that God had abandoned them or canceled his promises to them.

  114. It does mean that he stopped protecting them

  115. so that the things that they chose to serve began to dominate them.

  116. And in fact, in Romans chapter 1, verses 23 to 25,

    Romans 1:23–25

  117. is a passage that really has the same idea.

  118. It speaks of people who exchange the glory of the immortal God

  119. for images made to look like mortal human beings and birds and animals and reptiles.

  120. That is, it's a description of idolatry.

  121. Reject a God, create our own gods.

  122. And what was the result?

  123. The very next verse, Romans 1, 24,

  124. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts.

  125. He let them do it.

  126. He abandoned them to their desires.

  127. And the phrase desires of the heart means to have an overwhelming desire,

  128. drive, an uncontrollable and therefore an enslaving desire.

  129. For God to give them over means that he has allowed the things

  130. for which they have put their hope,

  131. things for which are not God,

  132. to become the ruling powers of their lives.

  133. And in fact, Romans 1 describes all of humanity.

  134. Once God gave them over because of their idolatry in Romans 1, 24,

  135. what's the next thing that happens?

  136. Romans 25, 1, 25,

  137. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie

  138. and they worshipped and served created things rather than the creator.

  139. The judgment for idolatry is more idolatry.

  140. Idolatry and slavery go hand in hand.

  141. Idolatry leads to slavery and slavery to idolatry.

  142. Let's take money for an example.

  143. God says to us,

  144. If you live for money instead of me,

  145. then money will rule your life.

  146. Money will control your life.

  147. It will control your heart.

  148. It will control your emotions.

  149. It will enslave you.

  150. And what you think is the answer to that solution

  151. is I just need to have a bit more

  152. and then it won't control me.

  153. Then I will have freedom if I have a bit more

  154. and then a bit more and a bit more.

  155. Then I'll have freedom.

  156. Idolatry leads to enslavement

  157. and enslavement to more idolatry.

  158. Or popularity.

  159. If you want to live for popularity instead of me,

  160. God says,

  161. then popular came

  162. and social media lacks

  163. will rule you and control you.

  164. And there has been some awful scenarios in recently

  165. in the media where we've seen

  166. that people have been controlled

  167. by social media likes.

  168. Even death.

  169. God says,

  170. If you want another God besides me,

  171. go ahead.

  172. Let's see how merciful it is to you,

  173. how effective it is at saving you

  174. and guiding you

  175. and enlightening you

  176. and affirming you.

  177. It will control you

  178. and it will make you sacrifice everything for it

  179. and it will make you miserable.

  180. Idolatry and slavery go hand in hand.

  181. And so in verse 8,

  182. it tells us that Israel's oppression

  183. was the worst oppression to date.

  184. And the sad thing here is

  185. that the way Israel treated their idols

  186. was the way they treated their God as well.

  187. They treated God like one of their idols.

  188. Worst oppression yet,

  189. the Philistines,

  190. the Ammonites,

  191. it says,

  192. shattered and crushed them.

  193. For 18 years,

  194. they oppressed all the Israelites

  195. on the east side of the Jordan

  196. in Gilead,

  197. the land of the Amorites.

  198. And again,

  199. Israel cries out to God.

  200. Verse 10,

  201. We have sinned against you,

  202. forsaking our God

  203. and serving the Baals.

  204. And what we see here

  205. is that God doesn't immediately forgive them

  206. or He doesn't jump in

  207. and solve their problem.

  208. In chapter 6,

  209. when the people cry out to God,

  210. He sent them a really stern warning.

  211. And here,

  212. the warning's a little bit harder as well.

  213. They have consistently

  214. turned their backs on God

  215. and He has consistently saved them.

  216. And this time,

  217. we get the crushing line

  218. in verse 13.

  219. I will no longer save you.

  220. Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen.

  221. Let them save you

  222. when you're in trouble.

  223. Despite a confession of sin,

  224. God has heard this song

  225. and this dance before.

  226. Israel's sin,

  227. as we've seen,

  228. as judges progresses

  229. and we'll see the next couple of weeks,

  230. Israel's sin is not so much a cycle

  231. as it is a plunge.

  232. It's like a ball gathering momentum.

  233. It's just a plunge.

  234. And it is a sheer tragedy

  235. when people become so accustomed

  236. to the mercy of God

  237. that they end up despising it.

  238. Even,

  239. and especially,

  240. in the act of seeking His mercy.

  241. They just despise His mercy.

  242. Again,

  243. here,

  244. Israel is sorry

  245. for the consequence

  246. of their sin

  247. rather than the sin itself.

  248. They are turning

  249. from idolatry

  250. in idolatrous ways.

  251. They are treating God

  252. like this great,

  253. warm,

  254. vending machine

  255. in the sky

  256. into which you need

  257. to just drop a token or two,

  258. one or two tokens of repentance

  259. and He will spit out

  260. the thing that I really want

  261. which is relief

  262. from my troubles.

  263. That's what I really want.

  264. I want relief.

  265. How often do we treat God

  266. like that?

  267. I remember doing this so much

  268. before I was a Christian

  269. and especially whenever I knew

  270. that I was going to need help.

  271. So exam times,

  272. you know,

  273. exams are coming up

  274. and so in those moments,

  275. pray to God.

  276. Sorry,

  277. I've been rejecting you

  278. a bit lately

  279. but if you can help me here,

  280. you know,

  281. it's going to be different

  282. beyond this.

  283. So it's like treating God

  284. like this vending machine,

  285. throwing some repentance,

  286. acknowledgement,

  287. haven't been kicking

  288. the goals lately

  289. but you help me in this exam

  290. and then we'll be fine.

  291. So help me pass this exam

  292. and I'd walk out of there

  293. and I would pass the exam

  294. most of the time

  295. and I'd go,

  296. man,

  297. I studied,

  298. you know,

  299. I just ignored God

  300. and I had this sense

  301. that when I did that,

  302. for some strange reason,

  303. I thought God was on my side

  304. in that exam room

  305. but not on anyone else's side.

  306. The rest of the pagans,

  307. I bet you they didn't think

  308. about praying to God,

  309. you know,

  310. helping with the exam

  311. so I've got a leg up here.

  312. I've definitely got a leg up

  313. over the rest of these people

  314. because God's on my side.

  315. I remember the time

  316. that my attitude

  317. struck home to me

  318. was that I was always

  319. trying to manipulate God

  320. to get on my side

  321. when it was when I

  322. was actually a Christian

  323. and I was at Bible college

  324. and I remember

  325. sitting down for an exam

  326. and praying a similar thing,

  327. God help me with the exam here

  328. and then looking around,

  329. God's on everyone's side here.

  330. That's no help to me.

  331. I really should have studied.

  332. And Israel's here

  333. trying to push the right buttons,

  334. trying to make the right sacrifices

  335. in order to get God,

  336. to manipulate God,

  337. to exert power for them.

  338. And God wants to shatter

  339. those false views

  340. that have been crafted of him.

  341. He's not a Baal.

  342. He's not an Asherah pole.

  343. Israel just assumed

  344. that whenever things got bad,

  345. they'd always just put the right things

  346. in the slot machine

  347. and they'd get God back.

  348. Now Israel seems to get their point.

  349. They're requesting verse 15

  350. is different than verse 10.

  351. Have a look at it.

  352. We have sinned.

  353. Do with us

  354. whatever you think best.

  355. But please rescue us now.

  356. Now that shows

  357. at least an element

  358. of a change of heart.

  359. Before they were focused

  360. on their condition,

  361. on their comfort.

  362. Now they admit

  363. that God is under

  364. no obligation whatsoever

  365. to solve their problem for them.

  366. It's like they're saying to God,

  367. we want you

  368. even if it means

  369. we will keep suffering.

  370. Although we'd rather not.

  371. It is much more

  372. a sign of real faith.

  373. You see,

  374. if we say to God,

  375. I want you

  376. because I want

  377. or I need you

  378. to give me

  379. this particular thing,

  380. whatever it is,

  381. we reveal

  382. that that particular thing,

  383. whatever it is,

  384. is our

  385. ultimate

  386. God.

  387. Our ultimate hope.

  388. Our ultimate sense of security.

  389. God, you exist

  390. to give me

  391. this stuff.

  392. That means that

  393. this stuff

  394. is more important

  395. than God.

  396. That's idolatry.

  397. Things like God,

  398. your job is to make me

  399. happy.

  400. God,

  401. your job is to

  402. give me a family.

  403. God,

  404. your job is to make

  405. the current family

  406. I got better

  407. than what it is.

  408. When we say that,

  409. we're saying,

  410. God,

  411. you exist

  412. to exert

  413. your power

  414. to give me

  415. what I want.

  416. That's idolatry.

  417. God's

  418. God,

  419. God,

  420. God,

  421. God,

  422. God,

  423. and so God

  424. responds to his people

  425. with mercy in verse 16.

  426. He now

  427. acts to save

  428. Israel.

  429. The Ammonite

  430. and the Israelite camps are drawn up for battle.

  431. The men of Gilead search for the person

  432. who's going to lead them into the battle

  433. and beyond the battle in verse 18.

  434. And we're introduced to him in chapter 11, verse 1.

  435. The new judge is now coming to the fore.

  436. It says here, Jephna, the Gileadite, was a mighty warrior.

  437. His father was Gilead.

  438. His mother was a prostitute.

  439. Gilead's wife also bore him sons.

  440. And when they were grown up,

  441. they drove Jephna away.

  442. You're not going to get any inheritance in our family,

  443. they said, because you're the son of another woman.

  444. So Jephna fled from his brothers

  445. and settled in the land of Tob,

  446. where a gang of scoundrels gather around him

  447. and followed him.

  448. Now there's a, if you like, an unsurprising

  449. and at the same time surprising choice of a judge

  450. with Jephna.

  451. Jephna, like Gideon before him,

  452. is described as a mighty warrior.

  453. It seems like brawling and stuff's his thing.

  454. On the other hand,

  455. he's the illegitimate son of a prostitute.

  456. He's been driven out from his home,

  457. most likely as a young person by his half-brothers.

  458. And then he's out there living in the wilderness

  459. and he surrounds himself with a band of robbers.

  460. Jephna, as it turns out,

  461. is into organized crime

  462. and he's the crime boss.

  463. And so he's the natural choice.

  464. He's a complete outcast.

  465. He's a criminal from a broken home.

  466. And despite all of that,

  467. God chooses him to be the saviour.

  468. And the leaders of Gilead go to him,

  469. but Jephna was not so easily convinced.

  470. Verse 7,

  471. Didn't you hate me?

  472. Aren't you the same guys who hate me?

  473. You drove me out from my father's house.

  474. Why do you come to me now when you're in trouble?

  475. Does that at all sound familiar?

  476. There are so many similarities here

  477. between the way Israel has treated their God

  478. and the way that they are treating their judge,

  479. their leader.

  480. And so what Jephna wants to do here

  481. is he, before he does anything,

  482. before he picks up any sword,

  483. he resets the relationship

  484. between the leader of God's people,

  485. the judge, and the people.

  486. Verse 8,

  487. The elders of Gilead said to him,

  488. Nevertheless, we are turning to you now.

  489. Come with us to fight the Ammonites

  490. and you will be head over all of us

  491. who live in Gilead.

  492. Then Jephna clarifies the point in verse 9.

  493. Jephna answered,

  494. Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites

  495. and the Lord gives them to me.

  496. Suppose we win.

  497. Will I really be your head?

  498. And the elders of Gilead replied,

  499. The Lord is our witness.

  500. You will certainly do as,

  501. we will certainly do as you say.

  502. In other words,

  503. as we've seen already in this series,

  504. rescue and rule are inseparable.

  505. If I'm your saviour,

  506. I am also your ruler.

  507. If you look to an idol

  508. to be your saviour and your hope,

  509. it will rule you.

  510. You don't ask it to,

  511. it will,

  512. because salvation

  513. and rule go together.

  514. If you look to God

  515. as your saviour and your hope,

  516. he will rule you.

  517. And all of these judges

  518. point us ultimately

  519. to the greatest judge,

  520. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  521. The way people treat Jesus

  522. is the way that they are treating God.

  523. It is impossible

  524. to respect God

  525. or to truly repent

  526. without acknowledging

  527. Jesus' rule over your life.

  528. It's impossible.

  529. As I said earlier in this series,

  530. Jesus cannot be your rescuer

  531. if he isn't your ruler.

  532. And so,

  533. here in the text,

  534. the battle lines are drawn up,

  535. but Jephthah doesn't go up

  536. to war immediately.

  537. Turns out that this guy

  538. who's the crime boss

  539. actually happens

  540. with some negotiation skills.

  541. And so,

  542. his first option here

  543. is to go for a peaceful resolution.

  544. Who would have thought?

  545. The Ammonites

  546. neither respond nor retreat.

  547. So,

  548. diplomacy is exhausted,

  549. war is inevitable.

  550. And once the spirit of the Lord

  551. came on Jephthah

  552. in verse 29,

  553. the outcome is certain.

  554. The victory is won

  555. before swords are even drawn.

  556. And then there's something

  557. terrible happens.

  558. As Jephthah advances

  559. to meet the army,

  560. he makes this vow to God

  561. in verse 30.

  562. If you give the Ammonites

  563. into my hands,

  564. whatever comes out

  565. the door of my house

  566. to meet me

  567. when I return in triumph

  568. from the Ammonites

  569. will be the Lord's.

  570. and I will sacrifice it

  571. as a burnt offering.

  572. The Lord gives him his victory.

  573. He returns home

  574. as a victorious judge of Israel.

  575. What should now follow

  576. is the celebration

  577. of the victory

  578. and a time of peace.

  579. But instead,

  580. we have verse 34.

  581. When Jephthah returned

  582. to his home in Mizpah,

  583. who should come out

  584. to meet him

  585. but his daughter

  586. dancing to the sound

  587. of timbrels.

  588. She was an only child

  589. except for her.

  590. He had neither son

  591. nor daughter.

  592. And when he saw her,

  593. he tore his clothes

  594. and he cried,

  595. Oh no!

  596. My daughter!

  597. You have brought me down

  598. and I am devastated.

  599. I have made a vow

  600. to the Lord

  601. that I cannot break.

  602. He is distraught

  603. and yet at the same time

  604. he kind of hard blames

  605. his daughter for it.

  606. And his daughter

  607. remarkably insists

  608. that he keeps his vow to God.

  609. After two months of mourning

  610. with her friends,

  611. she comes back

  612. and Jephthah keeps his vow

  613. and he sacrifices her.

  614. It's a terrible story.

  615. In fact,

  616. it's the worst so far

  617. in this terrible

  618. section of Israel's history.

  619. It's going to get worse

  620. in the next two weeks

  621. but up to now

  622. this is the worst.

  623. And there is at least

  624. three big questions here.

  625. What did Jephthah

  626. actually promise

  627. in his vow?

  628. Why did he promise it?

  629. And why did he keep

  630. the promise?

  631. Firstly,

  632. some people have thought

  633. that he just promised

  634. to sacrifice

  635. anything that came out

  636. the door

  637. and he was anticipating

  638. an animal sacrifice.

  639. He was expecting

  640. the family dog

  641. to run out

  642. or maybe the cat

  643. or something like that.

  644. And there are,

  645. and I'm not going to go

  646. into all the details

  647. of this

  648. but there's a multitude

  649. of reasons

  650. as to why

  651. that's not the case.

  652. They range from it

  653. being unlikely

  654. that animals

  655. were first of all

  656. even allowed

  657. in the homes

  658. through to

  659. if that was

  660. what he was thinking

  661. then he would never

  662. have been distraught

  663. by his daughter

  664. coming out.

  665. He would have been

  666. waiting for the first

  667. animal to come out.

  668. The reality is

  669. Jephthah promised

  670. to make a human

  671. sacrifice to God

  672. if he was victorious.

  673. That was his promise.

  674. It was a human sacrifice.

  675. He was probably hoping

  676. for a servant

  677. rather than his daughter.

  678. Secondly,

  679. why did he make

  680. that promise?

  681. Deuteronomy 12

  682. says that human sacrifice

  683. is a detestable thing

  684. to God.

  685. Jephthah would have

  686. known that.

  687. God is so clear on it.

  688. Jephthah had

  689. clearly been

  690. deeply desensitized

  691. to the violence

  692. and the atrocities

  693. of the pagan cultures

  694. that surrounded him

  695. and that he was

  696. participating in.

  697. He's obviously

  698. become desensitized.

  699. It's such an awful

  700. example

  701. of how

  702. believers

  703. in the one true God

  704. who profess

  705. faith in him

  706. hold to some

  707. truth

  708. but allowed

  709. the world

  710. to squeeze

  711. them into

  712. their own

  713. mold.

  714. It's such an awful

  715. example of

  716. churches right

  717. throughout our world

  718. who have the word

  719. of God

  720. who knows what

  721. God's word said

  722. and yet

  723. allow the world

  724. and its priorities

  725. to squeeze the scriptures

  726. out.

  727. these days

  728. it's more likely

  729. as the church

  730. as Christians

  731. we're more likely

  732. to allow worldly

  733. attitudes to sex

  734. and money

  735. come in

  736. and live

  737. alongside

  738. biblical truth.

  739. in his culture

  740. it was different.

  741. But Jephna

  742. wasn't just

  743. impacted by

  744. the moral codes

  745. that surrounded him

  746. he was also

  747. impacted by

  748. their

  749. idolatrous

  750. works

  751. righteousness.

  752. Human sacrifice

  753. is how

  754. all those

  755. gods

  756. that surrounded

  757. Canaan

  758. human sacrifice

  759. is how they

  760. would buy off

  761. their pagan gods.

  762. It's how

  763. it's the tokens

  764. that they would

  765. put in

  766. to the vending

  767. machine

  768. to give God

  769. to give them

  770. what they wanted.

  771. Jephna

  772. thought

  773. Israel's

  774. God

  775. needed to be

  776. impressed

  777. he needed

  778. to be bought

  779. he needed

  780. to be controlled

  781. through a lavish

  782. gift

  783. of human

  784. sacrifice.

  785. And the

  786. tragedy

  787. is

  788. God

  789. had already

  790. decided

  791. to save

  792. his sinful

  793. people

  794. before he

  795. even made

  796. the vow

  797. to God.

  798. He'd already

  799. decided to use

  800. Jephna

  801. as

  802. his

  803. savior.

  804. So why

  805. did he go

  806. through with it?

  807. this is

  808. probably

  809. the more

  810. difficult

  811. thing

  812. to look

  813. at

  814. or to

  815. answer

  816. it's

  817. hard

  818. to know

  819. but

  820. except to

  821. say that

  822. he had

  823. no concept

  824. of the

  825. God of

  826. grace.

  827. He

  828. sees

  829. God

  830. in the

  831. same

  832. way

  833. as

  834. the

  835. nations

  836. around

  837. them

  838. as

  839. all

  840. the

  841. other

  842. pagan

  843. gods

  844. and

  845. idols

  846. he

  847. sees

  848. the

  849. true

  850. living

  851. God

  852. in

  853. exactly

  854. the

  855. same

  856. way

  857. a

  858. being

  859. whose

  860. favor

  861. has

  862. to

  863. be

  864. earned

  865. through

  866. flattery

  867. and

  868. lavish

  869. sacrifices

  870. and

  871. that's

  872. why

  873. in

  874. this

  875. moment

  876. he

  877. can't

  878. just

  879. break

  880. down

  881. and

  882. he's

  883. distraught

  884. he doesn't

  885. just drop

  886. on his

  887. knees

  888. and confess

  889. his

  890. error

  891. and

  892. repent

  893. and save

  894. his

  895. daughter

  896. it's

  897. because

  898. he

  899. simply

  900. doesn't

  901. trust

  902. this

  903. God

  904. that's

  905. why

  906. he

  907. goes

  908. through

  909. with

  910. it

  911. because

  912. he's

  913. trapped

  914. by

  915. his

  916. mistrust

  917. of

  918. this

  919. God

  920. it's

  921. like

  922. he

  923. believes

  924. that

  925. if

  926. he

  927. doesn't

  928. go

  929. through

  930. with

  931. it

  932. if

  933. he

  934. doesn't

  935. strike

  936. his

  937. daughter

  938. down

  939. this

  940. God

  941. will

  942. strike

  943. him

  944. down

  945. and

  946. this

  947. has

  948. been

  949. the

  950. problem

  951. for

  952. every

  953. human

  954. being

  955. ever

  956. since

  957. Adam

  958. and

  959. Eve

  960. it's

  961. our

  962. problem

  963. in

  964. the

  965. garden

  966. of

  967. Eden

  968. the

  969. very

  970. first

  971. line

  972. that

  973. comes

  974. out

  975. of

  976. the

  977. serpent's

  978. mountain

  979. Genesis

  980. 3

  981. is to

  982. cause

  983. human

  984. beings

  985. to

  986. disbelieve

  987. that God

  988. has their

  989. best

  990. interests

  991. at

  992. heart

  993. you

  994. cannot

  995. trust

  996. this

  997. God

  998. and

  999. ever

  1000. since

  1001. then

  1002. the

  1003. default

  1004. position

  1005. of

  1006. our

  1007. heart

  1008. the

  1009. wiring

  1010. is

  1011. to

  1012. feel

  1013. like

  1014. we

  1015. have

  1016. to

  1017. control

  1018. God

  1019. that

  1020. we

  1021. have

  1022. to

  1023. pay

  1024. God

  1025. that

  1026. we

  1027. have

  1028. to

  1029. deserve

  1030. God

  1031. that

  1032. we

  1033. have

  1034. to

  1035. do

  1036. something

  1037. to

  1038. put

  1039. something

  1040. in

  1041. the

  1042. vending

  1043. machine

  1044. to

  1045. spit

  1046. out

  1047. for

  1048. us

  1049. what

  1050. we

  1051. want

  1052. from

  1053. God

  1054. our

  1055. default

  1056. is

  1057. never

  1058. simply

  1059. to

  1060. trust

  1061. God

  1062. to

  1063. love

  1064. and

  1065. to

  1066. bless

  1067. us

  1068. we

  1069. instead

  1070. turn

  1071. from

  1072. him

  1073. to

  1074. other

  1075. things

  1076. turn

  1077. from

  1078. him

  1079. to

  1080. other

  1081. things

  1082. for

  1083. the

  1084. acceptance

  1085. of

  1086. the

  1087. love

  1088. that

  1089. we

  1090. crave

  1091. it

  1092. is

  1093. always

  1094. worth

  1095. asking

  1096. ourselves

  1097. the

  1098. questions

  1099. in

  1100. what

  1101. ways

  1102. would

  1103. I

  1104. live

  1105. differently

  1106. more

  1107. radically

  1108. more

  1109. restfully

  1110. if I

  1111. really

  1112. really

  1113. believe

  1114. that

  1115. God

  1116. was

  1117. completely

  1118. committed

  1119. to me

  1120. to

  1121. love

  1122. me

  1123. to

  1124. bless

  1125. me

  1126. and

  1127. to

  1128. work

  1129. what

  1130. is

  1131. best

  1132. for

  1133. me

  1134. how

  1135. would

  1136. that

  1137. impact

  1138. everything

  1139. the

  1140. way

  1141. I

  1142. live

  1143. if

  1144. I

  1145. truly

  1146. believe

  1147. death

  1148. to

  1149. my

  1150. heart

  1151. that

  1152. that

  1153. was

  1154. true

  1155. the

  1156. Bible

  1157. makes

  1158. it so

  1159. clear

  1160. that

  1161. this

  1162. God

  1163. is

  1164. for

  1165. us

  1166. and

  1167. so

  1168. this

  1169. episode

  1170. is

  1171. tragic

  1172. in

  1173. fact

  1174. the

  1175. great

  1176. victory

  1177. against

  1178. the

  1179. enemy

  1180. is

  1181. even

  1182. barely

  1183. mentioned

  1184. it's

  1185. overshadowed

  1186. by the

  1187. tragedy

  1188. of the

  1189. loss

  1190. of

  1191. Jephna's

  1192. daughter

  1193. this

  1194. victory

  1195. is like

  1196. a

  1197. it's

  1198. a

  1199. flawed

  1200. victory

  1201. it's

  1202. an

  1203. imperfect

  1204. salvation

  1205. instead

  1206. of

  1207. dancing

  1208. in the

  1209. streets

  1210. it's

  1211. like

  1212. there's

  1213. this

  1214. dark

  1215. cloud

  1216. this

  1217. doesn't

  1218. feel

  1219. like

  1220. a

  1221. salvation

  1222. it's

  1223. an

  1224. imperfect

  1225. salvation

  1226. by an

  1227. imperfect

  1228. savior

  1229. and so

  1230. it won't

  1231. last

  1232. it's

  1233. not

  1234. worth

  1235. celebrating

  1236. but it

  1237. should

  1238. well

  1239. in us

  1240. a sense

  1241. of

  1242. where is

  1243. the

  1244. true

  1245. salvation

  1246. where is

  1247. the

  1248. perfect

  1249. salvation

  1250. where is

  1251. the one

  1252. that's

  1253. worth

  1254. celebrating

  1255. and if

  1256. we want

  1257. a

  1258. perfect

  1259. salvation

  1260. we have

  1261. to look

  1262. beyond

  1263. Jephna

  1264. to one

  1265. that is

  1266. greater

  1267. than he

  1268. the

  1269. imperfect

  1270. savior

  1271. Jephna

  1272. points us

  1273. to the

  1274. perfect

  1275. savior

  1276. Jesus

  1277. Jephna

  1278. didn't

  1279. rise

  1280. to be

  1281. judged

  1282. despite

  1283. his

  1284. rejection

  1285. and his

  1286. suffering

  1287. he is

  1288. fitted

  1289. for

  1290. his

  1291. role

  1292. as the

  1293. judge

  1294. of

  1295. Israel

  1296. through

  1297. his

  1298. rejection

  1299. and his

  1300. suffering

  1301. and in

  1302. this he is

  1303. a pale

  1304. shadow

  1305. of the

  1306. greatest

  1307. savior

  1308. Jesus

  1309. John

  1310. 1 11

  1311. tells us

  1312. that Jesus

  1313. came to

  1314. that which

  1315. was his

  1316. own

  1317. but his

  1318. own

  1319. did not

  1320. receive

  1321. him

  1322. this is

  1323. the Jesus

  1324. who spent

  1325. his time

  1326. in the

  1327. wilderness

  1328. and was

  1329. tempted in

  1330. every way

  1331. but was

  1332. without

  1333. sin

  1334. according to

  1335. Hebrews

  1336. 4 15

  1337. he was

  1338. rejected

  1339. and unlike

  1340. Jephna

  1341. lived a

  1342. holy

  1343. righteous

  1344. life

  1345. a life

  1346. of

  1347. perfection

  1348. and both

  1349. his

  1350. rejection

  1351. and his

  1352. perfection

  1353. prepared him

  1354. for his

  1355. ultimate

  1356. act of

  1357. weakness

  1358. a criminal

  1359. death

  1360. on a

  1361. cross

  1362. the death

  1363. of a

  1364. criminal

  1365. on a

  1366. cross

  1367. and it

  1368. also

  1369. qualified

  1370. him

  1371. for

  1372. his

  1373. greatest

  1374. victory

  1375. the

  1376. great

  1377. victory

  1378. where

  1379. he

  1380. bore

  1381. our

  1382. sin

  1383. as

  1384. the

  1385. human

  1386. sacrifice

  1387. through

  1388. his

  1389. death

  1390. so that

  1391. he could

  1392. give

  1393. his

  1394. people

  1395. his

  1396. righteousness

  1397. and lead

  1398. them

  1399. into

  1400. peace

  1401. you

  1402. see

  1403. Jesus

  1404. the

  1405. son

  1406. of

  1407. God

  1408. is

  1409. the

  1410. great

  1411. savior

  1412. who

  1413. chose

  1414. to

  1415. offer

  1416. his

  1417. life

  1418. as

  1419. a

  1420. sacrifice

  1421. for

  1422. the

  1423. sin

  1424. of

  1425. the

  1426. world

  1427. he

  1428. wasn't

  1429. trapped

  1430. into

  1431. it

  1432. wasn't

  1433. surprised

  1434. by it

  1435. his

  1436. dad

  1437. didn't

  1438. all of a

  1439. sudden

  1440. pop

  1441. it

  1442. on

  1443. him

  1444. and

  1445. go

  1446. well

  1447. okay

  1448. he

  1449. chose

  1450. it

  1451. it

  1452. was

  1453. his

  1454. plan

  1455. to

  1456. pay

  1457. for

  1458. the

  1459. sin

  1460. of

  1461. humanity

  1462. and

  1463. turn

  1464. God's

  1465. anger

  1466. away

  1467. from

  1468. us

  1469. his

  1470. sacrifice

  1471. was

  1472. once

  1473. for

  1474. all

  1475. time

  1476. for

  1477. all

  1478. people

  1479. that's

  1480. why

  1481. we

  1482. celebrate

  1483. that's

  1484. why

  1485. we

  1486. sing

  1487. what

  1488. we

  1489. sing

  1490. and

  1491. because

  1492. of

  1493. this

  1494. sacrifice

  1495. there

  1496. is

  1497. only

  1498. one

  1499. sacrifice

  1500. that

  1501. God

  1502. requires

  1503. of

  1504. you

  1505. and

  1506. me

  1507. he's

  1508. not

  1509. the

  1510. great

  1511. vending

  1512. machine

  1513. it's

  1514. the

  1515. self

  1516. sacrifice

  1517. of

  1518. offering

  1519. God

  1520. lordship

  1521. over

  1522. every

  1523. area

  1524. of

  1525. our

  1526. life

  1527. because

  1528. with

  1529. salvation

  1530. comes

  1531. rule

  1532. and

  1533. this

  1534. is

  1535. not

  1536. done

  1537. to

  1538. secure

  1539. his

  1540. favour

  1541. we

  1542. don't

  1543. offer

  1544. him

  1545. lordship

  1546. he

  1547. doesn't

  1548. take

  1549. it's

  1550. not

  1551. it's

  1552. not

  1553. to

  1554. secure

  1555. his

  1556. favour

  1557. Jesus

  1558. has

  1559. already

  1560. secured

  1561. the

  1562. favour

  1563. of

  1564. God

  1565. for

  1566. us

  1567. our

  1568. sacrifice
