  1. Good morning, everyone. It would be good if you had Bibles in front of you.

  2. We are turning our attention today to the Arnold Schwarzenegger of the Bible,

  3. and his story begins in chapter 13, so we've been looking at chapter 13 to 16,

  4. so it would be good if you have the text in front of you.

  5. He's a man who is all muscles and testosterone.

  6. The life of Samson is an exciting life in some ways,

  7. full of sex and violence and death and power,

  8. but it's a tragedy as well.

  9. It's a disturbing and disappointing life.

  10. There were two women initially that he used,

  11. and the one that he fell in love with used him.

  12. It is such a relational tragedy.

  13. He is, in fact, the last of Israel's judges,

  14. and with him we discover the most flawed judge in the book.

  15. He's a violent, impulsive, sex-driven, ungodly, and complacent man.

  16. He uses his God-given strength to selfishly get himself out of the trouble

  17. that his weakness gets him into.

  18. He is, in fact, a picture of the state of God's people of Israel rolled into one individual.

  19. He's a flawed saviour who points us to a flawless saviour.

  20. And so there's three things I want to kind of nail as we look through this text today.

  21. I want to see, first of all, Israel's flawed vision.

  22. I want to see, secondly, Samson's flawed vision.

  23. And thirdly, the flawless saviour and a vision for a changed life.

  24. So firstly, Israel's flawed vision.

  25. The story of Samson begins in chapter 13.

  26. So if you've got your Bibles, you can flick back there.

  27. And it begins before he is even born.

  28. We see in the opening verse the now very familiar statement,

  29. again, the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  30. We've seen this phrase consistently pop up in Judges.

  31. It's the beginning of each of the cycles as Israel descended into idolatry once again.

  32. And this is the last time it's used in the book.

  33. It's the final time, again, Israel did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  34. It is, however, there is another statement that's used twice.

  35. The book had two introductions.

  36. It's got two conclusions.

  37. And twice, once in each one of those conclusions, there's another phrase which is used.

  38. It's the same kind of phrase, but in a different way.

  39. It goes like this.

  40. In those days, everybody did what was right in his own eyes or as they saw fit.

  41. And that there is the perfect definition of sin.

  42. Sin does not ultimately consist in us violating our conscience or violating our personal standards

  43. or violating community standards.

  44. It consists in violating God's will.

  45. This is very different to the moral code of our culture.

  46. Our society continually affirms that whatever our hearts wants, it must be true.

  47. Only I can determine what is right and wrong for me.

  48. In other words, my own eyes, that is my own feelings, my mind's perceptions, are the only way to determine what is right and wrong for me.

  49. It's the definition of sin that you see right back in Genesis 1 and 2,

  50. where Adam and Eve determine for themselves what is right and wrong for them.

  51. And common sense contradicts this view.

  52. Even if you don't have a Bible, it contradicts the view.

  53. If evil is determined by my own eyes, how can we ever tell the Nazis it was wrong for them to exterminate 6 million Jews?

  54. They thought they actually thought they were doing the human race a favour by providing justice for imagined wrongs in history.

  55. And so if our own eyes are not entirely in and of themselves sufficient, then whose eyes are sufficient?

  56. Maybe the eyes of experts can determine what's right and wrong.

  57. Maybe the eyes of the majority can determine what's right and wrong.

  58. However, these eyes don't avoid holocausts either.

  59. The Bible says that sin is violating God's will and therefore our relationship with him.

  60. What God sees is sin, is sin.

  61. Regardless of what the experts say, regardless of what our culture thinks, it's what God determines is sin.

  62. And the key here is that sin is so deceptive.

  63. Sin is so deceptive that Israel had by this point rationalised their sin.

  64. They in fact weren't uncomfortable living side by side with the Philistines.

  65. There's a group denial.

  66. Excuse me.

  67. There's a group denial of God's will here.

  68. They're collectively doing it.

  69. They thought that there was nothing wrong with their lives.

  70. And as we've said several times in this series,

  71. idolatry is not abandoning God and pursuing something else.

  72. It's pursuing other things alongside God, with God.

  73. And of course, this should lead us to be very careful and constantly evaluating ourselves through reflection on the Bible and personal accountability to others.

  74. We are always finding ways to rationalise sin.

  75. Sin in our culture like materialism, sin like bitterness, sin like pride, rationalising it.

  76. As Thomas Brooks, the 17th century Puritan wrote, Satan paints sin with virtues colours.

  77. And this is the approach to life and morality that Israel has.

  78. And in fact, they've had all along doing what was evil in God's eyes because it was right in their own eyes.

  79. That's Israel's flawed vision.

  80. And we see that Samson, he has a flawed vision as well.

  81. He is no different than Israel.

  82. He is introduced as the new judge in chapter 13.

  83. He is in fact, the only judge who is chosen before he is born.

  84. And from birth, Samson is set apart for service to God as a Nazarite.

  85. And the Nazarite vows can be found in Numbers chapter 6, verses 1 to 21.

    Numbers 6:1–21

  86. And there are three basic stipulations to the Nazarite vow.

  87. Hair wasn't to be cut.

  88. They weren't to drink any produce from the vines.

  89. And they were not to have any contact with dead bodies.

  90. And the intention of the vow was to seek special help from God during a crucial time.

  91. And so the vows had a limited time factor associated with them.

  92. It was a sign that you were looking to God for help in this moment,

  93. a special help with particular intensity and focus.

  94. And in Numbers 6, the vow was taken voluntarily and for a select period of time.

  95. But Samson's different.

  96. Samson is put under God's rule as a Nazarite before he's even born.

  97. As the spiritual condition of Israel plunges even further,

  98. chapter 13 prepares us right at the very beginning to receive the greatest of judges.

  99. A miracle birth to rescue God's people.

  100. This is the greatest judge yet.

  101. A wonderful deliverer.

  102. A powerful deliverer.

  103. And instead we have by far the most flawed character in the book.

  104. At the beginning of chapter 14, in fact, throughout the entire section of Samson's life,

  105. he is stirred by much more physical impulses.

  106. This is a man who doesn't think with his brain at all.

  107. Instead of him living out the promise as the one who will deliver Israel from its enemies,

  108. the first thing Samson decides to do as an adult is, in fact, to marry one of them.

  109. His parents attempt to dissuade him.

  110. But in verse 3, he says,

  111. Get her for me.

  112. She's the right one for me.

  113. Or literally, in the original language,

  114. Get her for me because she is right in my eyes.

  115. She's right in my eyes.

  116. And so Samson is not the judge we thought he might be.

  117. Rather than fight God's enemies, he moves amongst them.

  118. It's interesting that Samson found the woman at Timnah.

  119. That is deep inside Israelite territory.

  120. He was free to come and go amongst the Philistines.

  121. There's no threat there.

  122. The Philistines are living amongst the Israelites.

  123. They were settled, living normal lives inside Israel.

  124. This is a peaceful occupation.

  125. You see, there's something significant that is missing from this final judges cycle that we've been introduced to.

  126. There's a very significant element that's missing.

  127. It's in every one of them prior to this.

  128. For the first time, Israel is not crying out to God for help.

  129. They're not asking for release from their oppressor.

  130. Israel doesn't groan.

  131. They're not resisting their captors.

  132. It's like they are virtually unconscious of their enslavement.

  133. It would seem that they have adopted and adapted to the values and the idols of the Philistines.

  134. And so, therefore, they haven't even asked for Samson.

  135. God had to miraculously raise him up because they weren't looking for him.

  136. They didn't want him.

  137. We cannot exaggerate the danger that Israel was in.

  138. They are on the brink of the extinction and they don't even know it.

  139. As Michael Wilcox says in his commentary on this passage,

  140. there is no such thing as harmonious coexistence between the church and the world.

  141. For where there is no conflict, it is because the world has already taken over.

  142. Be careful of wanting to become acceptable.

  143. Israel and Philistine here are so intertwined that God has to do something special

  144. in order to pry the two nations apart because they're not looking for it.

  145. Have a look at chapter 14, verse 4.

  146. His parents did not know that this was from the Lord.

  147. That is, Samson marrying this woman from Tibna,

  148. who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines,

  149. for at that time they were ruling over Israel.

  150. God is using the weakness of Samson,

  151. that is his sexual appetite,

  152. his vindictiveness,

  153. his notoriously bad temper,

  154. to bring about a confrontation

  155. between Israel and Philistine

  156. because they've been so settled,

  157. God is going to use his weakness to drive a wedge.

  158. It is Samson's weakness and his sinfulness

  159. that causes friction between the two nations.

  160. And it's a friction that Israel doesn't want.

  161. In fact, at one point,

  162. the leaders of Israel bind Samson

  163. and hand him over to the Philistines

  164. so that we can go back

  165. to our peaceful, complacent lives.

  166. Now, by the time we get to chapter 16,

  167. the friction has grown

  168. and Samson has killed over a thousand Philistines.

  169. He's caused a bit of a stir.

  170. Israel, however,

  171. at this point,

  172. is no closer to their freedom

  173. and living in obedience to God.

  174. And it would turn out

  175. by the time you get to chapter 16,

  176. Samson hasn't changed a bit either.

  177. The next woman his weakness leads him to

  178. is a prostitute.

  179. His behavior is becoming more and more reckless.

  180. For some reason,

  181. he decides to pick up the city gate.

  182. I mean, he could have just smashed it.

  183. But he decides to pick it up

  184. and carry it forever

  185. and dump it on some hilltop.

  186. It's like,

  187. is everyone watching me?

  188. I mean, goodness me.

  189. This is Mr. Universe kind of stuff.

  190. His behavior is more reckless and pointless

  191. than in verse 14 of chapter 16.

  192. We're introduced to his next woman.

  193. And it's the first time in the book

  194. where it says he fell in love

  195. with a woman in the valley of Sorek

  196. whose name was Delilah.

  197. And Delilah,

  198. the woman he loved,

  199. will be his downfall.

  200. She is paid off to betray him.

  201. He is totally reckless with her,

  202. goading her.

  203. And eventually she wears him down,

  204. down,

  205. down,

  206. down,

  207. until he is fed up with it.

  208. He's fed up with it

  209. because he wants to settle down now

  210. and live a comfortable life.

  211. All his days of fighting with the Philistines,

  212. he wants them to be over.

  213. And yet she will be his downfall.

  214. Her name sounds like,

  215. in the original language,

  216. her name sounds like the night.

  217. Samson has finally climbed into bed with darkness.

  218. He eventually tells her

  219. the secret of his strength.

  220. His head is shaved.

  221. Verse 19 says that his strength has left him,

  222. but more importantly,

  223. verse 20,

  224. it says God has left him.

  225. The Lord has left him.

  226. And Samson now really is

  227. like every other man

  228. as verse 7, 11, 13, and 17

  229. indicate he would be.

  230. The strong man is finally seized,

  231. he's shackled,

  232. and the man

  233. who saw

  234. and grabbed

  235. whatever he wanted

  236. is now blind.

  237. His eyes are removed

  238. and he can no longer see.

  239. The man who burnt

  240. the Philistines grain

  241. in chapter 15,

  242. he's now reduced to grinding it

  243. in chapter 16.

  244. And so for the first time

  245. in the book of Judges,

  246. God's judge

  247. is defeated

  248. and humiliated.

  249. For the first time,

  250. God's judge

  251. is defeated

  252. and humiliated.

  253. And then in verse 22,

  254. it contains a somewhat,

  255. another one of these obvious statements

  256. that don't need repeating,

  257. but the hair on his head

  258. began to grow

  259. again

  260. after it had been shaved,

  261. which is generally

  262. what happens.

  263. You know,

  264. like,

  265. even my hair

  266. will grow back.

  267. Not as much as I want,

  268. but it will grow back.

  269. And Ian Francis,

  270. you have the same issue,

  271. and it will grow back.

  272. And what's there?

  273. I mean,

  274. they still charge you

  275. the same amount

  276. even if it's

  277. not a lot.

  278. Apparently,

  279. it's a search and fine fee.

  280. So why record the obvious?

  281. The point is

  282. the Philistines

  283. let his hair grow back.

  284. And I'm assuming

  285. that they were,

  286. they weren't completely

  287. clueless here,

  288. I'm assuming.

  289. I'm assuming

  290. they didn't just fail

  291. to notice

  292. that his hair

  293. had grown back.

  294. They simply

  295. must have assumed

  296. that once

  297. his hair was cut,

  298. he was no longer

  299. a Nazarite.

  300. And there is truth

  301. in that

  302. because number six

  303. indicates

  304. that the Nazarite vow

  305. was effective

  306. until the hair was cut

  307. and then it was all over.

  308. It was for a certain

  309. period of time.

  310. They had a,

  311. such a narrow view

  312. of God.

  313. Samson's strength

  314. did not come

  315. from the vows

  316. he made,

  317. it came from the God

  318. who he made them to.

  319. You see,

  320. the Philistines

  321. didn't know

  322. the God of Ehud,

  323. the God of the

  324. unexpected.

  325. They didn't know

  326. the God of Gideon,

  327. the God whose strength

  328. is made perfect

  329. in weakness

  330. and who never

  331. breaks his word.

  332. This is the God

  333. who said to Samson,

  334. said to Samson's parents,

  335. he will be

  336. a Nazarite

  337. until

  338. the day

  339. of his death.

  340. You see,

  341. God's abandonment

  342. of Samson here

  343. is temporary.

  344. the promise

  345. held,

  346. even though Samson

  347. despised the promise,

  348. the promise of God

  349. still held.

  350. This is

  351. abounding grace

  352. to even the worst

  353. of sinners

  354. with this God,

  355. which is what we have

  356. sung already this morning.

  357. In 2 Timothy 2.13

  358. it says,

  359. if we are

  360. faithless,

  361. he remains

  362. faithful

  363. because he cannot

  364. deny himself.

  365. You see,

  366. the Philistines

  367. only ever knew

  368. of conditional gods.

  369. Their gods

  370. could be manipulated.

  371. As I said last week,

  372. the God of the

  373. vending machine.

  374. The God of the Bible

  375. is the God of grace

  376. who is faithful

  377. to us

  378. even when we are

  379. unfaithful to him.

  380. This God

  381. is not bound

  382. or limited

  383. by the terms

  384. of the Nazarite vow.

  385. They don't understand

  386. that God's work

  387. and power

  388. are not constrained

  389. by or contingent

  390. upon his servants'

  391. obedience.

  392. And that's really

  393. what's going on

  394. behind the scenes here.

  395. The true

  396. contest here

  397. is not between

  398. Samson

  399. and the Philistines.

  400. It's between

  401. the Lord God

  402. and Dagon,

  403. their God.

  404. The false

  405. God of the

  406. Philistines.

  407. Who is stronger?

  408. Who will

  409. Israel

  410. finally serve?

  411. And it seemed

  412. at this point

  413. that Dagon

  414. had won.

  415. See what the

  416. rulers of the

  417. Philistines

  418. are saying

  419. in verse 23?

  420. This is the

  421. moment of

  422. celebration for them.

  423. Our God

  424. has delivered

  425. Samson

  426. our enemy

  427. into our

  428. hands.

  429. The setting

  430. for the

  431. gathering of

  432. the leaders

  433. and the people

  434. is the

  435. temple of

  436. Dagon.

  437. They celebrate

  438. and they

  439. praise Dagon

  440. as Israel's

  441. God's

  442. failed

  443. rescuer

  444. is

  445. brought out

  446. to entertain

  447. them,

  448. mock them,

  449. to be mocked

  450. and humiliated

  451. in verse 25.

  452. And yet

  453. God's rescuer

  454. is not yet

  455. finished.

  456. In verse 26,

  457. he asked

  458. to be put

  459. where I can

  460. feel the

  461. pillars

  462. that support

  463. the temple

  464. so that I

  465. may lean

  466. against them.

  467. Under the

  468. roof

  469. that is held

  470. up by

  471. these pillars

  472. is a great

  473. crowd,

  474. including the

  475. rulers of the

  476. Philistines

  477. and crucially

  478. the statue

  479. to their

  480. God

  481. Dagon.

  482. Verse 27

  483. says there's

  484. a further

  485. 3,000

  486. people on

  487. the roof.

  488. then for

  489. only the

  490. second time

  491. in his

  492. life,

  493. Samson

  494. prays.

  495. On every

  496. other occasion,

  497. Samson just

  498. assumed that I'm

  499. going to be

  500. strong here

  501. and used

  502. his strength

  503. to save

  504. himself.

  505. Now for

  506. the first

  507. time,

  508. he's blind,

  509. he's weak,

  510. he's humiliated

  511. and he simply

  512. asks in

  513. verse 28,

  514. Sovereign

  515. Lord,

  516. remember me.

  517. Please

  518. God,

  519. strengthen me

  520. just once

  521. more and

  522. let me with

  523. one blow

  524. take revenge

  525. on the

  526. Philistines

  527. for my

  528. two eyes.

  529. Now this

  530. is perhaps

  531. the first

  532. time that

  533. Samson

  534. exercises

  535. real and

  536. genuine

  537. faith as

  538. Hebrews 11

  539. commends

  540. him for.

  541. Can't see

  542. him exercising

  543. faith anywhere

  544. else.

  545. It is

  546. true

  547. that there

  548. is no

  549. mention here

  550. of Samson

  551. doing what

  552. he's doing

  553. in order to

  554. save Israel.

  555. He seems

  556. to be pulling

  557. the temple

  558. down as

  559. revenge on

  560. his own

  561. eyes.

  562. There is

  563. however a

  564. newfound

  565. humility.

  566. Samson

  567. had been

  568. humbled

  569. into the

  570. dust

  571. but more

  572. importantly

  573. he knew

  574. he was

  575. humbled

  576. into the

  577. dust.

  578. The request

  579. he makes

  580. of God

  581. here is

  582. different to

  583. his previous

  584. feats of

  585. strength.

  586. Verse 28

  587. he first of

  588. all asked

  589. Sovereign

  590. Lord remember

  591. me.

  592. It's so

  593. simple.

  594. It's humble.

  595. It's a request

  596. for attention.

  597. He knows

  598. he's forgettable

  599. and that God

  600. has every

  601. single right

  602. to ignore

  603. him.

  604. And then

  605. he asked

  606. God to

  607. strengthen

  608. him just

  609. one more

  610. time.

  611. And at

  612. last Samson

  613. acknowledges

  614. his

  615. dependence.

  616. Finally

  617. acknowledges

  618. his dependence

  619. on God's

  620. grace.

  621. And as he

  622. reached for

  623. the two

  624. pillars he

  625. did not

  626. know in

  627. that moment

  628. that God

  629. would in

  630. fact grant

  631. his strength

  632. or whether

  633. this would

  634. just be

  635. another

  636. humiliating

  637. act where

  638. they will

  639. mock him.

  640. And his

  641. final prayer

  642. comes in

  643. verse 30

  644. let me

  645. die with

  646. the

  647. Philistines.

  648. And having

  649. uttered that

  650. prayer it

  651. says he

  652. pushed with

  653. all of

  654. his might

  655. and down

  656. came the

  657. temple on

  658. the rulers

  659. and all

  660. the people

  661. in it

  662. and thus

  663. he killed

  664. many more

  665. when he

  666. died than

  667. when he

  668. lived.

  669. The most

  670. important

  671. moment

  672. of

  673. Samson's

  674. life

  675. is his

  676. death

  677. and the

  678. most

  679. faithful

  680. event

  681. of his

  682. life

  683. is the

  684. manner

  685. of his

  686. death

  687. the most

  688. triumphant

  689. episode

  690. in his

  691. life

  692. is his

  693. death

  694. as he

  695. at last

  696. and at

  697. the last

  698. performs

  699. the role

  700. for which

  701. he was

  702. miraculously

  703. given

  704. life for.

  705. he starts

  706. to rescue

  707. God's

  708. people

  709. as the

  710. angel

  711. said he

  712. would

  713. in chapter

  714. 13

  715. verse 5.

  716. A

  717. rescue

  718. that

  719. finds its

  720. fulfillment

  721. and ending

  722. Jesus

  723. centuries

  724. later.

  725. You see

  726. Samson

  727. the flawed

  728. saviour

  729. shines the

  730. spotlight

  731. on Jesus

  732. the flawless

  733. saviour.

  734. the death

  735. of Samson

  736. has so

  737. many

  738. similarities

  739. with the

  740. death

  741. of Jesus

  742. but it

  743. is

  744. different

  745. in two

  746. very

  747. crucial

  748. ways.

  749. Firstly

  750. Samson

  751. is in

  752. the temple

  753. of Dagon

  754. because of

  755. his own

  756. inability

  757. to live

  758. under God's

  759. rule

  760. and for

  761. God's

  762. glory.

  763. His

  764. downfall

  765. is brought

  766. about by

  767. his own

  768. disobedience.

  769. On the

  770. other hand

  771. Jesus

  772. always

  773. lived for

  774. his

  775. father's

  776. glory

  777. and died

  778. because of

  779. his

  780. obedience.

  781. Secondly

  782. Samson's

  783. death

  784. achieved a

  785. limited

  786. salvation

  787. for Israel.

  788. When the

  789. angel came

  790. to his

  791. mum to

  792. announce his

  793. birth in

  794. chapter 13

  795. verse 5

  796. it records

  797. the angel

  798. saying these

  799. words to

  800. her.

  801. He will

  802. take the

  803. lead in

  804. delivering

  805. Israel

  806. from the

  807. hands of

  808. the

  809. Philistines.

  810. Or

  811. literally

  812. he will

  813. start the

  814. process.

  815. He will

  816. begin to

  817. deliver

  818. Israel.

  819. And it's

  820. a deliverance

  821. that

  822. finds

  823. a

  824. fulfillment

  825. to a

  826. degree

  827. with

  828. King

  829. David

  830. and

  831. David's

  832. defeat

  833. of

  834. Goliath.

  835. But

  836. ultimately

  837. God's

  838. enemies

  839. are

  840. defeated

  841. by

  842. great

  843. King

  844. David's

  845. great

  846. son

  847. Jesus.

  848. Hebrews

  849. 10.10

  850. describes it

  851. like this.

  852. We have

  853. been made

  854. holy through

  855. the sacrifice

  856. of the

  857. body of

  858. Jesus

  859. Christ

  860. once and

  861. for all.

  862. In a

  863. similar way

  864. 1 Peter

  865. 3.18

  866. says

  867. puts it

  868. like this

  869. for Christ

  870. also suffered

  871. once

  872. for sin

  873. the

  874. righteous

  875. for the

  876. unrighteous

  877. to bring

  878. you

  879. to God.

  880. And yet

  881. in so

  882. many ways

  883. Samson's

  884. end is a

  885. picture and a

  886. shadow of

  887. Jesus'

  888. death.

  889. Both

  890. Samson and

  891. Jesus were

  892. betrayed by

  893. someone who

  894. had acted

  895. as a

  896. friend,

  897. Delilah

  898. and

  899. Judas.

  900. Both

  901. were handed

  902. over to

  903. their Gentile

  904. oppressors.

  905. Both

  906. were tortured,

  907. both were

  908. bound and

  909. put on public

  910. display for

  911. ridicule.

  912. Both

  913. were asked

  914. to perform.

  915. Samson

  916. does,

  917. Jesus

  918. didn't.

  919. Both

  920. died

  921. with their

  922. arms

  923. outstretched.

  924. Both

  925. appeared to

  926. be completely

  927. defeated by

  928. their enemies

  929. but both

  930. in their

  931. death

  932. completely

  933. crushed

  934. their enemies.

  935. Samson

  936. destroyed

  937. the Philistines

  938. and Dagon

  939. and Jesus

  940. the ultimate

  941. enemy,

  942. Satan

  943. and death

  944. himself.

  945. Colossians

  946. 2.13

  947. to 15

  948. says this

  949. about Jesus

  950. triumphant

  951. death.

  952. When you

  953. were dead

  954. in your

  955. sins

  956. and in

  957. the

  958. uncircumcision

  959. of your

  960. flesh,

  961. God made

  962. you alive

  963. with Christ.

  964. He forgave

  965. you all

  966. of your

  967. sins,

  968. having

  969. cancelled

  970. the charge

  971. of our

  972. legal

  973. indebtedness

  974. which stood

  975. against us

  976. and condemned

  977. us.

  978. He has

  979. taken it

  980. away,

  981. nailed it

  982. to the

  983. cross

  984. and having

  985. disarmed

  986. the powers

  987. and authorities

  988. he made

  989. a public

  990. spectacle

  991. of them

  992. triumphant

  993. over them

  994. by the

  995. cross.

  996. cross.

  997. The cross

  998. of Christ

  999. took away

  1000. the penalty

  1001. of our

  1002. idolatry

  1003. which is

  1004. death.

  1005. Jesus

  1006. was so

  1007. triumphant

  1008. that Satan

  1009. can no

  1010. longer

  1011. successfully

  1012. prosecute

  1013. the people

  1014. of God.

  1015. Jesus'

  1016. death

  1017. also took

  1018. away the

  1019. power of

  1020. sin in

  1021. our lives

  1022. enabling

  1023. the spirit

  1024. of God

  1025. to live

  1026. in us

  1027. and to

  1028. break

  1029. the lure

  1030. of idols

  1031. in our

  1032. hearts.

  1033. It took

  1034. the death

  1035. of Jesus

  1036. to destroy

  1037. Satan,

  1038. the unseen

  1039. power behind

  1040. our idolatry

  1041. and death.

  1042. As Samson

  1043. is the

  1044. last

  1045. judge

  1046. of

  1047. and

  1048. saviour

  1049. of Israel

  1050. in this

  1051. book,

  1052. so Jesus

  1053. is the

  1054. final and

  1055. the greatest

  1056. saviour

  1057. of all

  1058. people.

  1059. Samson

  1060. and Jesus

  1061. are not

  1062. just the

  1063. final

  1064. saviours,

  1065. but they

  1066. are also

  1067. the

  1068. lone

  1069. saviours.

  1070. Othniel

  1071. and Ehud,

  1072. they rallied

  1073. all of

  1074. Israel with

  1075. them to

  1076. fight their

  1077. oppressors

  1078. in chapter

  1079. 3.

  1080. Deborah

  1081. and Barak

  1082. took two

  1083. tribes with

  1084. them in

  1085. chapter 4.

  1086. Gideon

  1087. had his

  1088. 300 and

  1089. Samson's

  1090. act of

  1091. deliverance

  1092. was by

  1093. himself.

  1094. He

  1095. wasn't

  1096. asked for,

  1097. he

  1098. wasn't

  1099. even

  1100. wanted

  1101. by

  1102. Israel.

  1103. God

  1104. showed

  1105. in

  1106. Samson

  1107. that he

  1108. doesn't

  1109. need

  1110. an army

  1111. to

  1112. deliver

  1113. his

  1114. people.

  1115. He

  1116. doesn't

  1117. even

  1118. need

  1119. his

  1120. people

  1121. to

  1122. ask

  1123. for

  1124. it

  1125. in

  1126. order

  1127. to

  1128. deliver

  1129. his

  1130. people.

  1131. Doesn't

  1132. need

  1133. 300,

  1134. he

  1135. can

  1136. deliver

  1137. his

  1138. people

  1139. through

  1140. the

  1141. death

  1142. of

  1143. just

  1144. one.

  1145. And in

  1146. Samson,

  1147. even more

  1148. than all

  1149. the other

  1150. judges,

  1151. we actually

  1152. see the

  1153. pattern of

  1154. victorious

  1155. defeat.

  1156. Rejected,

  1157. beaten,

  1158. chained,

  1159. alone,

  1160. and finally

  1161. dying under

  1162. the avalanche

  1163. of his

  1164. enemies,

  1165. Samson

  1166. triumphs.

  1167. God

  1168. delivers

  1169. his

  1170. people

  1171. in

  1172. all

  1173. time

  1174. and

  1175. eternity

  1176. through

  1177. the

  1178. victorious

  1179. defeat

  1180. of

  1181. just

  1182. one

  1183. savior.

  1184. This

  1185. is the

  1186. gospel

  1187. of the

  1188. Lord

  1189. Jesus

  1190. Christ,

  1191. the

  1192. gospel

  1193. is the

  1194. heartbeat

  1195. of

  1196. this

  1197. church.

  1198. Jesus,

  1199. the

  1200. God

  1201. who

  1202. made

  1203. everything

  1204. and

  1205. rules

  1206. everything,

  1207. became

  1208. weak

  1209. to

  1210. rescue

  1211. the

  1212. weak

  1213. and

  1214. in

  1215. so

  1216. doing

  1217. became

  1218. immeasurably

  1219. strong.

  1220. And this

  1221. is the

  1222. last and

  1223. crucial

  1224. difference

  1225. between

  1226. Samson

  1227. and

  1228. Jesus.

  1229. With

  1230. Samson's

  1231. burial,

  1232. his rule

  1233. was done.

  1234. It was

  1235. over.

  1236. See that

  1237. in verse

  1238. 31,

  1239. then his

  1240. brothers

  1241. and his

  1242. father

  1243. and his

  1244. whole

  1245. family

  1246. went down

  1247. to get

  1248. him

  1249. and they

  1250. stuck him

  1251. in a

  1252. tomb

  1253. and he

  1254. had led

  1255. Israel

  1256. for 20

  1257. years.

  1258. That's

  1259. it.

  1260. Done.

  1261. It's

  1262. the end

  1263. of Samson.

  1264. His story's

  1265. finished.

  1266. But with

  1267. the burial

  1268. of Jesus,

  1269. the story

  1270. has just

  1271. begun.

  1272. Jesus

  1273. ruled

  1274. over the

  1275. grave

  1276. as the

  1277. creator

  1278. God

  1279. and he

  1280. rules

  1281. beyond

  1282. the

  1283. grave

  1284. as the

  1285. resurrected

  1286. Lord

  1287. of all.

  1288. The

  1289. one

  1290. who

  1291. became

  1292. weak

  1293. to save

  1294. the weak

  1295. rules

  1296. now in

  1297. strength

  1298. and power

  1299. eternally

  1300. and

  1301. immeasurably

  1302. becoming

  1303. and continuing

  1304. as a

  1305. Christian

  1306. follows

  1307. this same

  1308. pattern

  1309. becoming

  1310. weak

  1311. to become

  1312. strong.

  1313. Only those

  1314. who admit

  1315. they are

  1316. unworthy

  1317. receive the

  1318. approval of

  1319. God.

  1320. Only those

  1321. who know

  1322. their weakness

  1323. are unable

  1324. to know.

  1325. Only those

  1326. who understand

  1327. their weaknesses

  1328. are able to

  1329. know the

  1330. God-given

  1331. inner strength.

  1332. strength.

  1333. It's the

  1334. sort of

  1335. strength

  1336. that enables

  1337. us to

  1338. avoid the

  1339. pitfalls of

  1340. Samson's

  1341. life.

  1342. Eyes that

  1343. love sin.

  1344. Eyes that

  1345. are comfortable

  1346. with pride

  1347. and lust

  1348. and anger

  1349. and vengefulness

  1350. and complacency.

  1351. These are the

  1352. pitfalls that

  1353. must be

  1354. avoided.

  1355. Samson's

  1356. story is

  1357. Israel's

  1358. story.

  1359. Samson

  1360. was called

  1361. by God

  1362. and separated

  1363. out from

  1364. all of

  1365. Israel to

  1366. serve God

  1367. in a special

  1368. way.

  1369. Israel,

  1370. likewise,

  1371. a holy

  1372. nation,

  1373. separated to

  1374. God from

  1375. the rest of

  1376. the world

  1377. for the

  1378. purpose of

  1379. serving their

  1380. God.

  1381. Purpose of

  1382. revealing him

  1383. to the

  1384. world.

  1385. And yet

  1386. Israel was

  1387. consistently

  1388. looking over

  1389. its shoulder

  1390. to the

  1391. other nations

  1392. and wishing

  1393. that it

  1394. could be

  1395. like them

  1396. and do

  1397. what they

  1398. did to

  1399. worship

  1400. their gods

  1401. and adopt

  1402. their ways.

  1403. Samson

  1404. was a

  1405. holy man.

  1406. Israel

  1407. was a

  1408. holy nation.

  1409. Samson

  1410. went after

  1411. other women.

  1412. Israel

  1413. went after

  1414. other gods.

  1415. Samson's

  1416. story is

  1417. Israel's

  1418. story and

  1419. it's our

  1420. story too.

  1421. And his

  1422. tragedy may

  1423. be our

  1424. tragedy if

  1425. we resist

  1426. the call of

  1427. God on

  1428. our life

  1429. as he

  1430. did.

  1431. Everyone

  1432. who has

  1433. come to

  1434. Christ in

  1435. weakness and

  1436. dependence on

  1437. God is a

  1438. holy person

  1439. separated from

  1440. the world for

  1441. the purpose of

  1442. serving God.

  1443. 1 Peter 2

  1444. 9 calls it

  1445. like this.

  1446. A chosen

  1447. people.

  1448. He calls us.

  1449. Those are in

  1450. Christ.

  1451. You're a

  1452. chosen people.

  1453. A royal

  1454. priesthood,

  1455. a holy

  1456. nation,

  1457. God's

  1458. special

  1459. possession

  1460. that you

  1461. may declare

  1462. the praise

  1463. of him

  1464. who called

  1465. you out of

  1466. darkness,

  1467. called you

  1468. out of the

  1469. night into

  1470. his wonderful

  1471. light.

  1472. God's

  1473. God's

  1474. intention

  1475. according to

  1476. 1 Peter

  1477. is take

  1478. the fight

  1479. to the

  1480. enemy

  1481. through his

  1482. people,

  1483. through us

  1484. being different

  1485. and through

  1486. us being

  1487. light in the

  1488. darkness,

  1489. exposing our

  1490. world's gods

  1491. for what they

  1492. are as

  1493. hollow

  1494. shams.

  1495. we exist

  1496. for the

  1497. praise of

  1498. the one

  1499. who calls

  1500. us out

  1501. of the

  1502. darkness,

  1503. away from

  1504. the clutches

  1505. of the

  1506. light,

  1507. into the

  1508. light.

  1509. We exist

  1510. to declare

  1511. his praises

  1512. so that

  1513. more and

  1514. more people

  1515. might be

  1516. called out

  1517. of darkness

  1518. into his

  1519. light.

  1520. Will

  1521. we embrace

  1522. God's

  1523. call on

  1524. our

  1525. life?

  1526. That's the

  1527. trajectory of

  1528. judges.

  1529. Will we

  1530. run with

  1531. it and

  1532. find our

  1533. joy and

  1534. our reason

  1535. for living

  1536. in being

  1537. what God

  1538. has called

  1539. us to

  1540. be?

  1541. Or will

  1542. we be

  1543. the reluctant

  1544. saints as

  1545. Samson was,

  1546. as Israel

  1547. were, always

  1548. looking over

  1549. the shoulders

  1550. wishing we

  1551. could be as

  1552. other people?

  1553. Will we be

  1554. separated or

  1555. will we

  1556. consistently

  1557. pursue the

  1558. idols of

  1559. our society?

  1560. Will we

  1561. like Samson

  1562. be led

  1563. with our

  1564. eyes and

  1565. covetedness of

  1566. our hearts?

  1567. Will we lie

  1568. down comfortably

  1569. with the

  1570. night?

  1571. The greatest

  1572. danger to

  1573. the Christian

  1574. and the

  1575. church is

  1576. becoming just

  1577. the same

  1578. as everyone

  1579. else?

  1580. To become

  1581. settled and

  1582. comfortable with

  1583. idolatry and

  1584. exchanging the

  1585. glory of God

  1586. for things made

  1587. by human

  1588. hands?

  1589. Will you be

  1590. driven by your

  1591. eyes?

  1592. many years

  1593. ago, I

  1594. grew up on a

  1595. farm.

  1596. We had

  1597. pigs on

  1598. our farm

  1599. and you

  1600. could give

  1601. the pigs

  1602. really nice

  1603. food.

  1604. I mean, I

  1605. would need it,

  1606. but it was

  1607. nice food.

  1608. But what the

  1609. pigs got used

  1610. to for me is

  1611. food scraps and

  1612. other rubbish,

  1613. whatever it was,

  1614. any junk, you

  1615. throw it in a

  1616. bucket and

  1617. every day or

  1618. two you take

  1619. this stinking

  1620. mess up to the

  1621. pig pen and

  1622. they would see

  1623. me coming and

  1624. they would make

  1625. this little

  1626. noise and

  1627. they do this

  1628. little dance and

  1629. you'd put this

  1630. slop down and

  1631. they would

  1632. wolf it up like

  1633. it was hot

  1634. apple pie and

  1635. ice cream.

  1636. Pigs eyes

  1637. delighting in

  1638. muck and

  1639. rubbish,

  1640. exchanging the

  1641. glory of God

  1642. for things that

  1643. are significantly

  1644. less.

  1645. thinking it's

  1646. more valuable.

  1647. Will we

  1648. serve God

  1649. because we

  1650. must or

  1651. because,

  1652. will we serve

  1653. him because

  1654. he, we

  1655. must or even

  1656. because he

  1657. gives me what

  1658. I want him

  1659. to give me

  1660. or because he

  1661. is truly

  1662. valuable and

  1663. I love him

  1664. for the gospel,

  1665. for what he

  1666. has done for

  1667. me.

  1668. Horatio Gates

  1669. Spafford was

  1670. a prominent

  1671. American lawyer

  1672. and Presbyterian

  1673. church elder in

  1674. the 1800s.

  1675. He lost

  1676. nearly his

  1677. entire fortune

  1678. in the great

  1679. Chicago fire of

  1680. 1871.

  1681. In the same

  1682. year, his

  1683. four-year-old son

  1684. died to scarlet

  1685. fever.

  1686. Two years

  1687. later, the

  1688. family decided

  1689. to take a

  1690. holiday to

  1691. Europe, but

  1692. Horatio was

  1693. held back

  1694. because of

  1695. business.

  1696. So his

  1697. wife and

  1698. his four

  1699. daughters

  1700. traveled ahead

  1701. of him

  1702. and across

  1703. the Atlantic

  1704. and on

  1705. November the

  1706. 22nd,

  1707. 1873, while

  1708. crossing the

  1709. Atlantic, their

  1710. ship was

  1711. struck by an

  1712. iron sailing

  1713. vessel and

  1714. 226 people

  1715. lost their

  1716. lives, including

  1717. all four of

  1718. Spafford's

  1719. daughters.

  1720. His wife got

  1721. to England, sent

  1722. back a telegram

  1723. and said,

  1724. saved,

  1725. alone.

  1726. Spafford

  1727. immediately jumped

  1728. on a sailing

  1729. boat,

  1730. head to

  1731. England.

  1732. As he

  1733. sailed over

  1734. the location

  1735. of the

  1736. accident where

  1737. his four

  1738. daughters lost

  1739. his life, he

  1740. penned a

  1741. hymn, it's

  1742. called how

  1743. it is well

  1744. with my

  1745. soul.

  1746. Though

  1747. Satan should

  1748. buffet, though

  1749. trials should

  1750. come, let

  1751. this blessed

  1752. assurance control

  1753. that Christ has

  1754. regarded my

  1755. helpless estate

  1756. and he has

  1757. shed his own

  1758. blood for my

  1759. soul.

  1760. My sin

  1761. or the

  1762. bliss of

  1763. this glorious

  1764. thought, my

  1765. sin not

  1766. impart but

  1767. the whole

  1768. is nailed

  1769. to the

  1770. cross and

  1771. I bear it

  1772. no more.

  1773. Praise the

  1774. Lord, praise

  1775. the Lord, oh

  1776. my soul.

  1777. Will the

  1778. call of

  1779. God on

  1780. your life

  1781. to be his

  1782. saints, to

  1783. be his

  1784. servants, still

  1785. captivate your

  1786. heart, still

  1787. fill you with a

  1788. sense of

  1789. wonder and

  1790. privilege and

  1791. move you to

  1792. continue to be

  1793. his faithful

  1794. soldiers and

  1795. servants rejecting

  1796. the idols of

  1797. your culture in

  1798. the next five

  1799. years, ten

  1800. years, twenty

  1801. years, twenty

  1802. five years until

  1803. your life's

  1804. end.

  1805. Let's
