  1. What motivates you to do things for other people?

  2. A couple of months ago, Alyssa had gone away for the weekend.

  3. She'd taken Micah and I was left with the two big kids, Isaac and Tamara.

  4. And I spent hours cleaning the house.

  5. And so when Alyssa got home, I was like, look at me.

  6. Look at this house.

  7. Look at all this cleaning I've done.

  8. I know, and look, these kids are still alive.

  9. They've been fed.

  10. Even had a play with some other friends.

  11. The house was cleaner than it had ever been.

  12. Husbands, have you ever tried to pull this thing off?

  13. Maybe not.

  14. And the response I was looking for, what I was hoping Alyssa would say was,

  15. Oh, James, you are just the best husband ever.

  16. Thank you so much for doing this.

  17. You know, you could have just been watching movies with the kids, eating donuts.

  18. But you didn't.

  19. And I am so indebted to you.

  20. Actually, you know, you should take some time off.

  21. You're doing a weekend of being a single dad.

  22. That's been hard for you.

  23. So, you know, here's a pat on the head like a puppy.

  24. Does anyone think I got that response from Alyssa?

  25. I'm not sure if she's in the room to defend herself.

  26. No, she didn't say that.

  27. It was probably much shorter.

  28. But what motivates you to do things for other people?

  29. Is it to be praised like me?

  30. Is it so that people owe you?

  31. Maybe you want people to butter you up so that, you know, you want people to think more of you than they really do.

  32. Does being a Christian motivate you to love other people?

  33. To serve them and to help them?

  34. Or is your motive to try and win God's praise?

  35. You know, does God, do you want God to say, oh, you know, you've worked so hard.

  36. Let me bless you more.

  37. Is your motive of loving other people to try and make God forget your sin?

  38. Are you motivated to help people so that God thinks higher of you than he does currently?

  39. Today, we're continuing in our series looking at the book of 1 Thessalonians as we think about standing firm.

  40. And last week, we saw how Paul and Silas started this church in Thessalonica before they were driven out.

  41. And so Paul sent Timothy and then this letter to care for this new little church.

  42. And today, we're looking at the second chapter.

  43. And we're going to see what motivated Paul to go to this area, to start this church.

  44. What motivated him to love and to serve these people and to send this letter?

  45. So I'm going to pray as we look at God's word for us.

  46. Heavenly Father, as we come before your word today,

  47. Lord, I ask that you would help us to have minds that are open,

  48. hearts that are ready to be challenged,

  49. that we would consider our motives,

  50. that we would think well,

  51. that we would think through your eyes about why we do things, Lord.

  52. We ask that we would do this for your glory.

  53. Amen.

  54. And so at the beginning of chapter 2,

  55. Paul reminds the church of how he came to them.

  56. They had suffered,

  57. Paul had suffered greatly in Philippi because they'd been sharing the good news.

  58. And they had come to Thessalonica.

  59. And Paul writes this big list of how they came,

  60. but also how they did not come to them.

  61. So please have a look at me,

  62. with me at chapter 2, verse 3.

  63. And if you don't have a Bible open,

  64. we can get you one,

  65. but it will also be on the screen.

  66. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives,

  67. nor are we trying to trick you.

  68. On the contrary,

  69. we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.

  70. We are not trying to please people,

  71. but God who tests our hearts.

  72. You know we never used flattery,

  73. nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed.

  74. God is our witness.

  75. We were not looking for praise from people,

  76. not from you or anyone else.

  77. Even though as apostles of Christ,

  78. we could have asserted our authority.

  79. Instead,

  80. we were like young children among you.

  81. Paul says,

  82. we didn't come with error or impure motive.

  83. It's not a trick.

  84. We're not trying to please people.

  85. We're trying to please God.

  86. We didn't use flattery.

  87. We didn't use greed.

  88. We're not looking for praise and fame,

  89. which we could have as apostles.

  90. But we came like children.

  91. Why is Paul saying this?

  92. He's gone to great lengths here.

  93. He's taken up a fair chunk of this short book

  94. to defend himself.

  95. And the way this church started.

  96. Is there people outside the church

  97. or even inside the church

  98. trying to discredit Paul,

  99. saying,

  100. oh, that guy,

  101. he came with tricks,

  102. he came with sleight of hand

  103. to try and steal your money

  104. and fool you into believing Jesus?

  105. Are people saying that he was a thief

  106. going door to door,

  107. selling the gospel,

  108. setting up churches

  109. to steal people's money?

  110. Well, it's most likely

  111. that Paul was trying

  112. to distance himself

  113. from other types of people

  114. that went around

  115. from town to town

  116. speaking.

  117. During this time

  118. of the first century,

  119. there were no movie stars

  120. or TV stars,

  121. obviously.

  122. There were no reality TV stars.

  123. There was no singing celebrities

  124. like we have

  125. in the same way.

  126. The celebrities

  127. that they had

  128. were philosophers.

  129. So think of

  130. Aristotle

  131. and Plato.

  132. They're from a couple

  133. of hundred years beforehand.

  134. But philosophers

  135. were these professional speakers

  136. who would go

  137. from town to town

  138. and they would present

  139. new ideas

  140. and new thoughts.

  141. They would speak

  142. and use rhetorical tricks

  143. and they would

  144. try and keep people

  145. interested and engaged

  146. in order to make people

  147. agree with what they said.

  148. They would enter cities

  149. with great pomp

  150. and ceremony.

  151. They would have

  152. these giant audiences.

  153. They would try

  154. and get disciples

  155. to follow their teaching.

  156. And ancient sources

  157. tell us

  158. that the thing

  159. that motivated

  160. these philosophers

  161. was money.

  162. It was fame.

  163. It was glory.

  164. It's not really

  165. that different

  166. to what motivates

  167. people to try

  168. and become big.

  169. It's fame.

  170. It's money.

  171. It's glory.

  172. And it makes

  173. most sense

  174. that Paul is saying

  175. he didn't come

  176. like one of these philosophers.

  177. He didn't come

  178. to get fame

  179. and glory.

  180. He didn't come

  181. with impure motive

  182. but with

  183. the help of God.

  184. He did not come

  185. with tricks

  186. like a motivational speaker

  187. or a TED talk

  188. designed to

  189. emotionally influence people

  190. but he came

  191. with the good news

  192. of Jesus.

  193. He didn't come

  194. flattering people

  195. so that they would

  196. like him more.

  197. He didn't come

  198. with the purpose

  199. of gaining money.

  200. They didn't come

  201. to be praised.

  202. He didn't come

  203. so that at the end

  204. of him speaking

  205. there would be

  206. thunderous applause.

  207. Make sure you don't

  208. do that this morning.

  209. I know you weren't

  210. going to anyway

  211. just to check.

  212. They didn't come

  213. to get fame

  214. and glory

  215. but as apostles

  216. Paul had met

  217. Jesus himself

  218. and there is

  219. no higher claim

  220. than to say

  221. that he had met

  222. God.

  223. Instead

  224. they came

  225. like children

  226. and so instead

  227. of coming

  228. to get fame

  229. and glory

  230. the end of the chapter

  231. verse 20 says

  232. you are our glory

  233. and our joy.

  234. That word glory

  235. it's not the usual

  236. word glory

  237. in reference

  238. to God.

  239. The word glory

  240. here is more

  241. like fame.

  242. So Paul and Silas

  243. didn't come to

  244. Thessalonica

  245. to get fame

  246. and glory

  247. for themselves.

  248. They came

  249. to get

  250. the Thessalonians.

  251. They are the fame

  252. and the glory

  253. they wanted.

  254. Paul didn't come

  255. with impure motives.

  256. He didn't come

  257. influenced by pride

  258. or greed

  259. or a desire

  260. for praise.

  261. I wonder

  262. do these things

  263. influence

  264. our motives?

  265. Even when it comes

  266. to serving people

  267. at church

  268. or loving others

  269. during the week.

  270. What are our motives

  271. influenced by?

  272. We as a church

  273. value radical generosity

  274. and we want to also

  275. have a local impact.

  276. Imagine if

  277. Toys and Tucker

  278. is coming up

  279. towards the end

  280. of the year.

  281. Is anybody aware

  282. of Toys and Tucker?

  283. Yes?

  284. Good.

  285. Some of you?

  286. If not,

  287. let me tell you

  288. what Toys and Tucker

  289. is.

  290. It's where we

  291. give to others

  292. out of what God

  293. has given us.

  294. So in particular

  295. toys and food,

  296. tin food,

  297. other food

  298. to share

  299. with other people.

  300. And because we

  301. want to have

  302. the biggest impact,

  303. imagine that we

  304. as a church

  305. devised a little

  306. competition.

  307. Imagine that we

  308. said,

  309. okay,

  310. we wanted to

  311. fill the stage

  312. with food

  313. and so what

  314. we're going

  315. to do is

  316. we're going

  317. to compete

  318. with our

  319. services.

  320. We're going

  321. to see which

  322. congregation can

  323. bring the most

  324. food.

  325. So we're going

  326. to compare

  327. 9.30 and

  328. 4 o'clock.

  329. Now,

  330. who do you

  331. think is going

  332. to win?

  333. I heard someone

  334. say 9.30.

  335. Shame on you

  336. for saying that.

  337. But imagine

  338. that we say this

  339. because we want

  340. to have a big

  341. impact.

  342. We want to have

  343. a big local

  344. impact.

  345. We want to care

  346. for people.

  347. We want to be

  348. radically generous.

  349. And so we

  350. compete with

  351. each other.

  352. You know,

  353. 9.30's got to

  354. beat 4 o'clock.

  355. You know,

  356. 9.30 we're

  357. going to say,

  358. come on,

  359. let's beat

  360. them.

  361. We don't want

  362. to let those

  363. young people

  364. at 4 o'clock

  365. beat us.

  366. And they're

  367. going to be

  368. saying,

  369. oh,

  370. we don't want

  371. to let those

  372. families and

  373. old people and

  374. other people.

  375. We don't want

  376. to let those

  377. people beat us.

  378. And so we all

  379. have to go and

  380. spend lots of

  381. money and bring

  382. it in.

  383. It's a little

  384. bit extra

  385. motivation to be

  386. generous.

  387. It's a bit

  388. extra motivation

  389. to show love.

  390. But we're all

  391. sinful.

  392. And there's some

  393. of us that are

  394. highly competitive.

  395. And so,

  396. you know,

  397. there's,

  398. I'll pick on

  399. Nick.

  400. There's Nick,

  401. and he's down

  402. at Woolies,

  403. filling up trolley

  404. after trolley,

  405. because,

  406. do you know

  407. what,

  408. he really wants

  409. 9.30 to win,

  410. because,

  411. you know,

  412. his kids are

  413. encouraging him

  414. to.

  415. And so,

  416. what has gone

  417. from being

  418. generous,

  419. it's now pride

  420. and arrogance.

  421. And,

  422. you know,

  423. there's people

  424. at 4 o'clock,

  425. well,

  426. they don't want

  427. to let these

  428. kids beat him,

  429. and so,

  430. they're filling

  431. up trolley,

  432. they're buying

  433. toys after toys.

  434. And all of a

  435. sudden,

  436. what was initially

  437. about serving

  438. and being

  439. generous and

  440. showing the

  441. love that God

  442. has shown us,

  443. we're stuck

  444. with a motivation

  445. of pride

  446. and a desire

  447. for fame

  448. and glory.

  449. That's what

  450. happens when we

  451. don't stand

  452. firm in faith,

  453. hope,

  454. and love.

  455. Are we

  456. guilty of

  457. the same

  458. thing?

  459. It's a

  460. question of

  461. motivation.

  462. Why are we

  463. nice to

  464. people?

  465. Why do

  466. people serve

  467. morning tea?

  468. Why do I

  469. lead a community

  470. group?

  471. Why are you

  472. wearing a

  473. snazzy red

  474. vest this

  475. morning?

  476. Why were

  477. those people

  478. wearing those

  479. wonderful

  480. high-vis

  481. vests out

  482. in the rain

  483. this morning?

  484. Maybe that

  485. one's not

  486. about the

  487. glory,

  488. maybe they

  489. are just

  490. serving in

  491. the rain.

  492. Why do

  493. we do

  494. what we

  495. do?

  496. One of

  497. the core

  498. values of

  499. our church

  500. is servant

  501. leadership,

  502. that the

  503. heart of

  504. the church

  505. is the

  506. service of

  507. God and

  508. others,

  509. selfishly

  510. nourishing

  511. others,

  512. pastoring and

  513. equipping and

  514. loving others.

  515. It's character

  516. over skills.

  517. We need to

  518. answer the

  519. why of what

  520. we're doing

  521. before we

  522. can answer

  523. the what

  524. question.

  525. We're to

  526. serve God

  527. with all

  528. of our

  529. life,

  530. and there

  531. are many

  532. ways to

  533. serve one

  534. another,

  535. particularly

  536. here at

  537. church.

  538. And some

  539. of them

  540. do need

  541. to be

  542. aware of

  543. getting more

  544. fame than

  545. others.

  546. I'll pick

  547. on Nick

  548. again,

  549. musicians on

  550. stage.

  551. It's very

  552. easy to

  553. say,

  554. oh,

  555. Nick

  556. Freestone,

  557. your voice

  558. is like

  559. that of

  560. an angel.

  561. No?

  562. Okay,

  563. sorry,

  564. mate.

  565. To say,

  566. who was

  567. playing guitar

  568. this morning?

  569. Nick,

  570. your guitar

  571. skills bring

  572. tears to

  573. my eyes.

  574. hearts.

  575. How do

  576. we do

  577. this kind

  578. of thing

  579. all the

  580. time?

  581. How does

  582. Nick

  583. respond?

  584. How does

  585. other Nick

  586. respond when

  587. we say

  588. these kinds

  589. of things?

  590. Do they

  591. say,

  592. yes,

  593. I do

  594. sound like

  595. an angel,

  596. don't I?

  597. Or would

  598. they be

  599. saying something

  600. like,

  601. yes,

  602. God has

  603. gifted me

  604. and I'm

  605. so

  606. pleased I

  607. can serve

  608. you and

  609. the church?

  610. We need

  611. to continue

  612. to check

  613. our heart

  614. and our

  615. motives to

  616. make sure

  617. there isn't

  618. praise creep,

  619. to make sure

  620. that fame

  621. isn't creeping

  622. into our

  623. motivations.

  624. What may

  625. have started

  626. out years

  627. ago with

  628. the best

  629. of intentions

  630. may have

  631. become an

  632. idol,

  633. our God

  634. that brings

  635. us pleasure

  636. and joy

  637. and happiness.

  638. How bad

  639. would it be

  640. to realize

  641. in years

  642. time that

  643. instead of

  644. serving at

  645. church for

  646. God's glory

  647. to build

  648. his kingdom,

  649. we've been

  650. building our

  651. own kingdom,

  652. getting praise

  653. for us,

  654. which is

  655. fickle and

  656. will all

  657. come tumbling

  658. down.

  659. So Paul

  660. has showed

  661. us how

  662. he came

  663. and how

  664. he did

  665. not come.

  666. He didn't

  667. come with

  668. impure

  669. motives.

  670. And he

  671. shows us

  672. now a bit

  673. more about

  674. how he

  675. did come

  676. to Thessalonica.

  677. Have a

  678. look at

  679. verse 7,

  680. the second

  681. half of

  682. verse 7

  683. with me.

  684. Just as

  685. a nursing

  686. mother cares

  687. for her

  688. children,

  689. so we

  690. cared for

  691. you,

  692. because we

  693. loved you

  694. so much.

  695. We were

  696. delighted to

  697. share with

  698. you not

  699. only the

  700. gospel of

  701. God,

  702. but our

  703. lives as

  704. well.

  705. Surely you

  706. remember,

  707. brothers and

  708. sisters,

  709. our toil and

  710. hardship.

  711. We worked

  712. night and

  713. day in

  714. order not

  715. to be a

  716. burden to

  717. anyone while

  718. we preached

  719. the gospel

  720. to you.

  721. You are

  722. witnesses,

  723. and so is

  724. God,

  725. of how

  726. holy,

  727. righteous,

  728. and blameless

  729. we were

  730. among you

  731. who believed.

  732. For you

  733. know that

  734. we dealt

  735. with each

  736. of you

  737. as a

  738. father deals

  739. with his

  740. own

  741. children,

  742. encouraging,

  743. comforting,

  744. and urging

  745. you to live

  746. lives worthy

  747. of God,

  748. who calls

  749. you into

  750. his kingdom

  751. and glory.

  752. One of the

  753. things I've

  754. really loved

  755. about spending

  756. time in

  757. 1 Thessalonians

  758. is seeing

  759. how much

  760. Paul really

  761. loves these

  762. people.

  763. He uses

  764. the most

  765. intimate

  766. language.

  767. He refers

  768. to himself

  769. as a

  770. nursing

  771. mother,

  772. caring

  773. for her

  774. own

  775. children.

  776. This was

  777. a time

  778. where the

  779. people that

  780. had financial

  781. resources,

  782. they would

  783. have a

  784. nursing

  785. mother.

  786. They would

  787. get a

  788. wet nurse

  789. so they

  790. wouldn't

  791. have to

  792. feed their

  793. own

  794. child.

  795. So they

  796. would get

  797. a wet

  798. nurse to

  799. look after

  800. their baby.

  801. But Paul

  802. hasn't come

  803. like a

  804. wet nurse

  805. to look

  806. after someone

  807. else's

  808. baby.

  809. He's like

  810. a wet

  811. nurse

  812. looking after

  813. his own

  814. child.

  815. It's not

  816. a financial

  817. transaction.

  818. It's not

  819. something that

  820. Paul had

  821. to do

  822. just because

  823. God had

  824. sent him

  825. there.

  826. Paul and

  827. Silas loved

  828. these people

  829. so much

  830. and they

  831. were delighted

  832. to share

  833. their lives

  834. with them.

  835. Paul didn't

  836. just come

  837. and get up

  838. and preach

  839. on the

  840. Sabbath,

  841. maybe visit

  842. a couple

  843. people during

  844. the week

  845. and have

  846. tea.

  847. He shared

  848. with them

  849. the gospel

  850. but his

  851. life.

  852. Again,

  853. Paul didn't

  854. come like

  855. the professional

  856. speakers,

  857. coming and

  858. staying in

  859. five-star

  860. hotels,

  861. maybe coming

  862. down and seeing

  863. the people to

  864. sign a few

  865. autographs.

  866. He gave

  867. the message

  868. but his

  869. life as

  870. well to

  871. the church.

  872. Paul came

  873. like a

  874. father,

  875. encouraging,

  876. comforting and

  877. urging the

  878. people to

  879. live lives

  880. worthy of

  881. God.

  882. And as we

  883. saw last

  884. week and

  885. again today,

  886. Paul and

  887. Silas came

  888. and shared

  889. the gospel

  890. in the midst

  891. of intense

  892. persecution,

  893. this persecution

  894. that eventually

  895. led them to

  896. be run out

  897. of town.

  898. Paul continues

  899. this intimate

  900. family language,

  901. verse 14.

  902. For you,

  903. brothers and

  904. sisters,

  905. became imitators

  906. of God's

  907. churches in

  908. Judea,

  909. which are in

  910. Christ Jesus.

  911. You suffered

  912. from your own

  913. people the same

  914. things those

  915. churches suffered

  916. from the Jews.

  917. Brothers and

  918. sisters, you

  919. suffered the same

  920. thing as

  921. everyone else.

  922. They suffered

  923. persecution just

  924. like the Jews

  925. who'd become

  926. Christians.

  927. He doesn't

  928. explicitly state

  929. it, but it's

  930. likely that

  931. some people

  932. were persecuted

  933. by their

  934. families,

  935. possibly even

  936. kicked out

  937. by their

  938. families.

  939. And when

  940. people are

  941. forced to

  942. leave a

  943. family,

  944. Christianity

  945. has the

  946. unique gift

  947. of being able

  948. to welcome

  949. them into

  950. a new

  951. family,

  952. one that

  953. has close

  954. relationships,

  955. brothers and

  956. sisters from

  957. every tribe,

  958. every race,

  959. every tongue.

  960. It's one of

  961. the things

  962. we've been

  963. celebrating

  964. here today,

  965. that we

  966. are

  967. transcultural,

  968. that this

  969. family comes

  970. from all

  971. places.

  972. And it's

  973. so important

  974. that this

  975. new family

  976. starts.

  977. And it's

  978. not just

  979. cousins,

  980. but it's

  981. intimate

  982. relationships

  983. that Paul

  984. is celebrating

  985. here with

  986. the church.

  987. There was a

  988. Lifeline study

  989. done a couple

  990. of years ago

  991. that said

  992. that 80%

  993. of people

  994. thought that

  995. loneliness

  996. was increasing.

  997. We are

  998. increasingly

  999. connected

  1000. through technology,

  1001. but we are

  1002. also increasingly

  1003. disconnected

  1004. from the people

  1005. around us.

  1006. Even sitting

  1007. in a crowd

  1008. of people

  1009. like here

  1010. at church

  1011. today or

  1012. at a party,

  1013. we can feel

  1014. profoundly

  1015. alone,

  1016. whether married

  1017. or single,

  1018. whether you

  1019. have many

  1020. friends or

  1021. not.

  1022. And Paul

  1023. gives us

  1024. an antidote

  1025. to loneliness.

  1026. He delighted

  1027. to share

  1028. his life

  1029. with people.

  1030. He delighted

  1031. to share

  1032. his life.

  1033. Is church

  1034. just the place

  1035. that you

  1036. visit on a

  1037. Sunday?

  1038. Is it

  1039. just where

  1040. you come

  1041. to,

  1042. to spend

  1043. some time

  1044. with God

  1045. and then

  1046. leave?

  1047. I love

  1048. doing church

  1049. with all of

  1050. you on a

  1051. Sunday,

  1052. but that's

  1053. only part

  1054. of what

  1055. church is.

  1056. It has

  1057. to go

  1058. beyond

  1059. Sunday.

  1060. It has

  1061. to even

  1062. go beyond

  1063. community

  1064. groups or

  1065. Bible studies

  1066. as we

  1067. meet in

  1068. the week.

  1069. Maybe

  1070. you're

  1071. thinking to

  1072. yourself,

  1073. well,

  1074. yeah,

  1075. I can only

  1076. come on

  1077. Sundays.

  1078. I can't

  1079. even make

  1080. community

  1081. groups.

  1082. I'm

  1083. really

  1084. busy.

  1085. There's

  1086. too many

  1087. things going

  1088. on in

  1089. my life

  1090. right now.

  1091. I don't

  1092. have the

  1093. energy

  1094. for it.

  1095. Paul was

  1096. trained as

  1097. a Pharisee,

  1098. and yet he

  1099. also had a

  1100. trade as a

  1101. tent maker.

  1102. And so he

  1103. took this

  1104. trade around

  1105. with him.

  1106. He had a

  1107. job that

  1108. he worked

  1109. around the

  1110. church, the

  1111. people, his

  1112. dearly loved

  1113. family that he

  1114. delighted in.

  1115. His job

  1116. worked around

  1117. what he was

  1118. doing in the

  1119. church.

  1120. How often do

  1121. we chase our

  1122. job, our

  1123. career, our

  1124. future, the

  1125. future of our

  1126. kids, based

  1127. on what we

  1128. want?

  1129. And then we

  1130. fit church

  1131. around that.

  1132. For

  1133. Alyssa and

  1134. I, we

  1135. were faced

  1136. with a

  1137. tough decision

  1138. in January

  1139. of this

  1140. year.

  1141. We had an

  1142. opportunity to

  1143. take up a

  1144. job with a

  1145. really great

  1146. church, with

  1147. a great

  1148. team, and

  1149. a great

  1150. boss and

  1151. mentor as

  1152. well.

  1153. It's you

  1154. guys, I'm

  1155. talking about

  1156. you guys, if

  1157. you didn't

  1158. know.

  1159. Sorry, I was

  1160. being a little

  1161. bit too subtle

  1162. there.

  1163. But there

  1164. was a cost.

  1165. There was a

  1166. cost to our

  1167. family to

  1168. come back

  1169. and rejoin

  1170. this church

  1171. family that

  1172. we loved from

  1173. the year we'd

  1174. spent here in

  1175. 2014.

  1176. A cost would

  1177. be that we

  1178. would have to

  1179. leave our

  1180. church family

  1181. at St.

  1182. Aidan's, but

  1183. we would also

  1184. have to move

  1185. a lot further

  1186. away from

  1187. our families.

  1188. Our families

  1189. live in

  1190. Wollongong.

  1191. Most of them

  1192. live there.

  1193. And so moving

  1194. here is twice

  1195. the distance.

  1196. Depending on a

  1197. day with

  1198. traffic and

  1199. weather, we

  1200. are a long

  1201. way away from

  1202. our family.

  1203. We are not

  1204. the only ones

  1205. that have

  1206. made ministry

  1207. decisions to

  1208. be further

  1209. away from

  1210. family.

  1211. But moving

  1212. here would

  1213. mean that we

  1214. were further

  1215. away from our

  1216. family, that we

  1217. wouldn't get to

  1218. see them as

  1219. much as we

  1220. wanted to, that

  1221. our kids

  1222. wouldn't get to

  1223. see their

  1224. grandparents and

  1225. cousins as

  1226. much.

  1227. And it was

  1228. painful for us.

  1229. things.

  1230. But it's also

  1231. a joy that we

  1232. could rejoin our

  1233. family here at

  1234. St. Paul's.

  1235. It was a decision

  1236. to move away from

  1237. our personal

  1238. family, but to

  1239. rejoin this church

  1240. family that we

  1241. loved and missed

  1242. and longed to be

  1243. with again.

  1244. And so we don't

  1245. just want this to

  1246. be a Sunday

  1247. thing.

  1248. We could have

  1249. commuted from an

  1250. hour away if it

  1251. was just a Sunday

  1252. thing.

  1253. We don't want

  1254. to just see you

  1255. once or twice a

  1256. week.

  1257. We want to

  1258. delight in sharing

  1259. our lives with

  1260. you, our kids'

  1261. lives as we

  1262. share the gospel.

  1263. Was it painful

  1264. leaving our church

  1265. and moving away

  1266. from family?

  1267. Yes, it was.

  1268. But we have

  1269. family here too.

  1270. At least there

  1271. is a group of

  1272. people that could

  1273. be a family

  1274. together.

  1275. The Apostle

  1276. Paul has

  1277. bared his

  1278. soul as he

  1279. delighted to

  1280. share his

  1281. entire life

  1282. and gospel

  1283. with the church.

  1284. He defended

  1285. the way that he

  1286. came and

  1287. shared the gospel

  1288. and served

  1289. them.

  1290. Paul was

  1291. motivated by

  1292. Jesus'

  1293. model.

  1294. Jesus didn't

  1295. come for fame

  1296. or to gain

  1297. glory or

  1298. fortune, but

  1299. he valued us

  1300. over his own

  1301. life.

  1302. And so Paul

  1303. imitates Jesus

  1304. valuing

  1305. what God

  1306. values,

  1307. valuing other

  1308. people.

  1309. So let me

  1310. encourage you,

  1311. know that other

  1312. people are made

  1313. in the image of

  1314. God.

  1315. They are worth

  1316. loving and

  1317. serving.

  1318. You shouldn't

  1319. need a motivation

  1320. of pride and

  1321. glory to love

  1322. and serve other

  1323. people.

  1324. It is who we

  1325. are to be.

  1326. Be challenged

  1327. to share your

  1328. life with people

  1329. so that you can

  1330. say with Paul

  1331. that people are

  1332. your delight.

  1333. And when you

  1334. serve, watch

  1335. out for that

  1336. praise creep,

  1337. that fame creep,

  1338. that just ever

  1339. so gently

  1340. creeps into

  1341. the way we

  1342. serve and love

  1343. other people.

  1344. Serve people

  1345. and God out

  1346. of love, but

  1347. not for profit.

  1348. Let me pray.

  1349. Let me pray.

  1350. Dear Heavenly

  1351. Father, you

  1352. have loved us

  1353. so much.

  1354. Your Son,

  1355. Jesus, served

  1356. us so much

  1357. that he valued

  1358. us above

  1359. his own life.

  1360. Heavenly

  1361. Father, help

  1362. us to be

  1363. motivated by

  1364. the same

  1365. thing.

  1366. Lord, help

  1367. us to be

  1368. radically

  1369. generous.

  1370. Lord, help

  1371. us desire to

  1372. have an impact

  1373. here with

  1374. your gospel.

  1375. help us

  1376. desire to

  1377. share our

  1378. lives with

  1379. people as

  1380. Paul did,

  1381. not for our

  1382. glory, but

  1383. for yours,

  1384. Lord.

  1385. Father, we

  1386. long to be

  1387. motivated not

  1388. for ourselves,

  1389. but to see

  1390. your kingdom

  1391. grow.

  1392. Help us to

  1393. check our

  1394. hearts and

  1395. change our

  1396. hearts, Lord,

  1397. so that we

  1398. can grow more

  1399. like your

  1400. Son every

  1401. day.
