  1. Jack and Grace met through a mutual friend.

  2. From day one, they just seemed to be perfect for each other.

  3. Grace was everything Jack had always wanted.

  4. She was beautiful and she was outgoing and she was caring.

  5. She was always there whenever Jack needed her.

  6. For the first five months, they were inseparable.

  7. Jack could hardly think of anything else but Grace.

  8. He didn't need to look further.

  9. He, in fact, told his friends, she's the one for sure.

  10. But now almost three years have passed.

  11. Jack still enjoys the comfort and the familiarity of being with Grace.

  12. But that sort of initial spark is gone.

  13. Grace's flaws seem a little more obvious to him now.

  14. He's not sure he finds her as attractive as he once did.

  15. And he's beginning to resent all the time that she wants to spend with him.

  16. And so one day when she asks if she can define the nature of their relationship, Jack blows up.

  17. We're together, aren't we?

  18. He asks angrily.

  19. Why isn't that enough for you?

  20. Obviously, Jack isn't quite ready for commitment.

  21. He's not sure he, in fact, ever will be ready for commitment or, in fact, ever really needs to be ready for commitment.

  22. Have you ever been in a relationship like that?

  23. Do you know people who are in a relationship like that?

  24. I do.

  25. Let me say, if that is you, if you're in a relationship like that, this is not God's purpose for your life.

  26. God wants you to be in a relationship that is defined by both passion and commitment.

  27. The reality is there are millions of Jacks walking around today.

  28. But there is something more you should know.

  29. Grace isn't a girl.

  30. Grace is a church.

  31. And this is the let's define the nature of the relationship talk.

  32. Three things I want us to explore this morning.

  33. Number one, what is the church?

  34. Number two, what is the purpose of the church?

  35. And number three, how to be a church member on purpose.

  36. So what is the church?

  37. It's really hard to get clarity on the word when there are so many different uses of the word church running around today.

  38. In fact, as I was writing this message, it was Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday.

  39. I was sitting on the balcony over at the rectory, just having a quiet moment writing this.

  40. And as I was writing this message, there was someone walking through the car park on the other end of their phone.

  41. And they said to whoever was on the other end of their phone,

  42. hey, you could park in the church.

  43. There's plenty of room here.

  44. Well, actually, no.

  45. I've got two problems with that.

  46. Number one, your definition of church, because I'm writing in this space right now.

  47. But I won't go there in this moment.

  48. But secondly, no, you can't just park here whenever you choose to.

  49. So other views of church is that church is a set of a system of beliefs,

  50. or it's a program that you attend for an hour and a half, two hours on a Sunday,

  51. or it's a denomination that you belong to, or it's an institution.

  52. That exists in society.

  53. The word that is translated as church in our Bible, in our New Testament,

  54. comes from the Greek word ecclesia.

  55. It's used just under 80 times in the New Testament.

  56. And all but three of them in the New Testament,

  57. it is translated into the English word church.

  58. Now, if we look at one of the places where it isn't translated into the English word church,

  59. you actually get an idea of what the New Testament meaning is behind,

  60. but what is the meaning behind the original word for ecclesia?

  61. So it's Acts chapter 19.

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  62. And a silversmith named Demetrius used to make a great living out of making idols

  63. until the apostle Paul arrives.

  64. He preaches and all these people start to become Christians.

  65. So that's great for the church, not so great for the idol business.

  66. And so what Demetrius does, realising that his income's dropping,

  67. he decides to whip the city up into a riot.

  68. And next thing you know, there's this large gathering in this amphitheatre,

  69. and it says this in Acts 19.32.

  70. Now, that's not the description of the church,

  71. but let me just pick up the word assembly there,

  72. is the Greek word ecclesia.

  73. It's translated elsewhere in the New Testament as church.

  74. So you could literally read this,

  75. the church was in confusion.

  76. It's just a gathering.

  77. The word church, at its core,

  78. simply refers to a crowd of people gathered together.

  79. It's a mob.

  80. Sometimes in the New Testament,

  81. church is used to refer to the gathering of Christians

  82. around God in heaven from all time and places.

  83. Theologians refer to this as the invisible church.

  84. Everyone who knows Jesus from every time and place,

  85. both alive and dead,

  86. are gathered spiritually in God's presence and magnifying him.

  87. And what we are waiting for is the end of all things

  88. when we will physically,

  89. everyone be in his presence,

  90. magnifying him.

  91. Mostly,

  92. the word refers to the local church,

  93. the local gathering in a particular place,

  94. like the church at the corner of Fuller's Road

  95. and View Street in Chatswood.

  96. This is the church visible.

  97. But it's not just any mob.

  98. It's not just any crowd that has gathered.

  99. The Greek word ecclesia

  100. is made from two other words,

  101. two other Greek words which are joined together.

  102. And these words mean to call out.

  103. Two words, to call and out.

  104. To call out.

  105. And so the word church

  106. really refers to those who were called out by God

  107. from the world

  108. to join together as his people,

  109. the followers of his son,

  110. the Lord Jesus.

  111. Now this is crucial

  112. for us to,

  113. in understanding

  114. what the church is.

  115. But also,

  116. what the purpose of the church is.

  117. Last week,

  118. we looked at the

  119. much broader question

  120. of

  121. what is the purpose of life?

  122. And we saw that God

  123. created us

  124. and saved us

  125. to magnify him

  126. because he is magnus.

  127. He is great.

  128. We saw that God

  129. is worthy

  130. to be magnified

  131. because he is great

  132. and he is good.

  133. And this great and good God

  134. has a great

  135. and good plan.

  136. So let's have a look

  137. at what that plan is.

  138. And we're going to begin

  139. in Ephesians chapter 1 verse 8.

    Ephesians 1:8

  140. I've given you a list of references

  141. so

  142. you can go back

  143. and check them later on

  144. or scribble them down

  145. if you like.

  146. So Ephesians chapter 1 verse 8,

    Ephesians 1:8

  147. with all wisdom

  148. and understanding,

  149. he,

  150. that's God,

  151. made known to us

  152. the mystery of his will

  153. according to his good pleasure

  154. which he purposed

  155. in Christ

  156. to be put into effect

  157. when the times

  158. reach their fulfillment

  159. to bring unity

  160. to all things

  161. in heaven

  162. and on earth

  163. under Christ.

  164. Christ.

  165. So

  166. that's where

  167. everything's going.

  168. That's

  169. the plan.

  170. That's the goal.

  171. This big God

  172. has a big plan

  173. and the big plan

  174. is everything

  175. gathered together

  176. under Jesus.

  177. Jesus supreme

  178. and Lord

  179. over everything.

  180. So that's the end.

  181. So let's go back

  182. to the beginning

  183. and let's see

  184. that this is in fact

  185. been God's plan

  186. all along.

  187. It's the reason

  188. why you and I

  189. were created

  190. and saved.

  191. So back in the beginning

  192. it's the Garden of Eden

  193. and in the Garden of Eden

  194. you're not going to read it

  195. but there's a real sense

  196. in Genesis 1 and 2

  197. where all things

  198. are gathered

  199. to God.

  200. He's made it.

  201. Everything's at peace.

  202. Everything is ordered.

  203. Everything is perfect

  204. in relationship

  205. with Him.

  206. And then

  207. the first people

  208. make the decision

  209. to

  210. instead of

  211. magnifying

  212. God

  213. they decide

  214. to magnify

  215. themselves.

  216. They decide

  217. to live life

  218. their way

  219. and to make everything

  220. about them

  221. rather than about God.

  222. The Bible calls

  223. this attitude

  224. in this action

  225. sin.

  226. And the consequence

  227. of sin

  228. is everything

  229. that is ordered

  230. now becomes

  231. disordered.

  232. There's no more

  233. harmony.

  234. There's no more

  235. peace.

  236. Everything's turned

  237. upside down

  238. and relationships

  239. with God

  240. is broken.

  241. Where there used

  242. to be unity

  243. and closeness

  244. with God

  245. now because of sin

  246. there is just

  247. distance and

  248. disunity.

  249. And then God

  250. what He does

  251. is He removes

  252. people from

  253. His presence.

  254. He judges

  255. their sin

  256. by

  257. it's a theological

  258. word

  259. scattering them.

  260. He scatters

  261. them from

  262. Himself.

  263. And this is

  264. the principle

  265. that you see

  266. right throughout

  267. the entire

  268. Bible.

  269. You can trace

  270. it right to

  271. the Bible.

  272. Wherever

  273. humanity

  274. sets itself

  275. up against

  276. God

  277. He scatters

  278. them.

  279. But when

  280. He saves

  281. them

  282. He gathers

  283. them to

  284. Himself.

  285. You see it

  286. not far

  287. into

  288. Genesis

  289. where the

  290. Tower of

  291. Babel

  292. in Genesis

  293. 11

  294. and where

  295. He scatters

  296. people from

  297. Himself

  298. and from

  299. each other

  300. and yet

  301. in

  302. Genesis

  303. 12

  304. He calls

  305. Abraham

  306. to

  307. Himself.

  308. It's a

  309. theme that

  310. runs right

  311. through the

  312. Bible.

  313. When God

  314. saves He

  315. gathers

  316. people to

  317. Himself

  318. but when

  319. they rebel

  320. against

  321. Him He

  322. scatters

  323. them from

  324. His

  325. presence.

  326. Which is

  327. the ultimate

  328. thing that

  329. happens.

  330. The goal

  331. of all

  332. things God

  333. will gather

  334. those to

  335. Himself

  336. who are

  337. His for

  338. eternity

  339. in His

  340. presence

  341. and those

  342. who are

  343. not His

  344. He will

  345. cast them

  346. from His

  347. presence for

  348. all eternity.

  349. In Isaiah

  350. 11

  351. several

  352. hundred

  353. years

  354. before

  355. Jesus

  356. Isaiah

  357. is looking

  358. forward

  359. to this

  360. day

  361. when

  362. everything

  363. is

  364. finally

  365. ordered

  366. and

  367. harmonious

  368. and

  369. peaceful

  370. and in

  371. right

  372. relationship

  373. like it

  374. was in

  375. Genesis

  376. 1 and

  377. 2

  378. and he

  379. refers to

  380. a particular

  381. person

  382. who will

  383. accomplish

  384. God's

  385. great

  386. plan

  387. and in

  388. Isaiah

  389. 11

  390. this person

  391. is called

  392. the root

  393. of Jesse

  394. this person

  395. is the

  396. Messiah

  397. he is

  398. historically

  399. known as

  400. the son

  401. of great

  402. King

  403. David

  404. and in

  405. verse 12

  406. it says

  407. this

  408. he will

  409. raise a

  410. banner

  411. for the

  412. nations

  413. and gather

  414. the exiles

  415. of Israel

  416. he will

  417. assemble

  418. the scattered

  419. people

  420. of Judah

  421. from the

  422. four

  423. quarters

  424. of the

  425. earth

  426. then

  427. as

  428. Isaiah

  429. keeps

  430. going

  431. you get

  432. to

  433. Isaiah

  434. 56

  435. 8

  436. and

  437. God

  438. himself

  439. declares

  440. there

  441. that he

  442. will

  443. expand

  444. his

  445. plan

  446. beyond

  447. his

  448. historic

  449. people

  450. Israel

  451. and this

  452. is what

  453. God

  454. says

  455. he says

  456. I

  457. will

  458. gather

  459. still

  460. others

  461. to

  462. them

  463. besides

  464. those

  465. already

  466. gathered

  467. and the

  468. climax

  469. of God's

  470. plans

  471. is revealed

  472. at the end

  473. of the book

  474. of Isaiah

  475. in Isaiah

  476. 66

  477. 18

  478. we read

  479. and I

  480. this is

  481. God

  482. again

  483. and I

  484. because

  485. of what

  486. they have

  487. planned

  488. and done

  489. am about

  490. to come

  491. and gather

  492. the people

  493. of all

  494. nations

  495. and languages

  496. and they

  497. will come

  498. and see

  499. my glory

  500. see

  501. God's

  502. plan

  503. is to

  504. gather

  505. people

  506. from all

  507. nations

  508. and tribes

  509. and peoples

  510. and cultures

  511. to himself

  512. that they

  513. might see

  514. his glory

  515. that they

  516. might

  517. magnify

  518. his

  519. magnus

  520. it's a

  521. plan

  522. that starts

  523. to get

  524. worked out

  525. in history

  526. with the

  527. creation

  528. of the

  529. church

  530. by the

  531. Lord Jesus

  532. Christ

  533. and you

  534. see that

  535. in Ephesians

  536. 2 11

  537. the passage

  538. that was

  539. read out

  540. to us

  541. therefore

  542. formally

  543. remember

  544. that formally

  545. you

  546. who are

  547. Gentiles

  548. by birth

  549. and court

  550. uncircumcised

  551. by those

  552. who call

  553. themselves

  554. the circumcision

  555. which is

  556. done in

  557. the body

  558. by human

  559. hands

  560. remember

  561. that at

  562. that time

  563. you were

  564. separated

  565. you were

  566. scattered

  567. from Christ

  568. excluded

  569. from

  570. citizenship

  571. in Israel

  572. and foreigners

  573. to the

  574. covenants

  575. of the

  576. promise

  577. without

  578. hope

  579. and without

  580. God

  581. in this

  582. world

  583. see what

  584. Paul does

  585. here in

  586. Ephesians

  587. is he

  588. highlights

  589. the

  590. massive

  591. division

  592. between

  593. Jews

  594. and Gentiles

  595. but also

  596. between

  597. them all

  598. both Jews

  599. and Gentiles

  600. and God

  601. there is

  602. deep

  603. deep

  604. hostility

  605. which is

  606. hard for

  607. us to

  608. understand

  609. and what

  610. Paul does

  611. in verse

  612. 13

  613. is he

  614. shows us

  615. how God

  616. brings about

  617. the end

  618. of this

  619. hostility

  620. and gathers

  621. these people

  622. to each

  623. other

  624. and to

  625. himself

  626. so

  627. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:13

  628. verse 13

  629. now in

  630. Christ Jesus

  631. you who

  632. once were

  633. far away

  634. you who

  635. once were

  636. scattered

  637. have been

  638. brought near

  639. been gathered

  640. by the

  641. blood of

  642. Christ

  643. for he

  644. himself is

  645. our peace

  646. who has

  647. made the

  648. two groups

  649. one

  650. and has

  651. destroyed

  652. the barrier

  653. the dividing

  654. wall of

  655. hostility

  656. by setting

  657. aside in

  658. his flesh

  659. the law

  660. with its

  661. commandments

  662. and regulations

  663. his purpose

  664. was to

  665. create

  666. in himself

  667. one

  668. new

  669. humanity

  670. out of

  671. the two

  672. thus making

  673. peace

  674. and in

  675. one body

  676. to reconcile

  677. both of

  678. them to

  679. God

  680. through the

  681. cross

  682. by which

  683. he put

  684. to death

  685. their hostility

  686. sin

  687. death

  688. hostility

  689. between

  690. Jew and

  691. Gentile

  692. is finally

  693. dealt with

  694. by Jesus

  695. at the

  696. cross

  697. Jesus

  698. is the

  699. one who

  700. gathers

  701. these

  702. diverse

  703. people

  704. together

  705. and he

  706. calls them

  707. a new

  708. people

  709. a new

  710. humanity

  711. and we

  712. will talk

  713. a little

  714. bit more

  715. about that

  716. next week

  717. a new

  718. people

  719. gathered

  720. to God

  721. in relationship

  722. with God

  723. so what's

  724. God's purpose

  725. in all of

  726. this

  727. we're still

  728. asking that

  729. question

  730. what is the

  731. purpose of

  732. the church

  733. why do

  734. this

  735. why gather

  736. like this

  737. Ephesians 3

  738. 10

  739. his intent

  740. God's intent

  741. was that

  742. now

  743. right now

  744. here

  745. through the

  746. church

  747. the

  748. manifold

  749. wisdom

  750. wisdom

  751. of God

  752. should be

  753. made known

  754. to the

  755. rulers

  756. and the

  757. authorities

  758. in the

  759. heavenly realms

  760. according to

  761. his eternal

  762. purpose

  763. that he

  764. accomplished

  765. in Christ

  766. Jesus

  767. our

  768. Lord

  769. the

  770. manifold

  771. wisdom

  772. the

  773. multi

  774. colored

  775. spectacular

  776. wisdom

  777. of God

  778. should be

  779. made known

  780. through the

  781. church

  782. the great

  783. and glorious

  784. God's great

  785. and glorious

  786. plan

  787. is to gather

  788. a very diverse

  789. people

  790. to each

  791. other

  792. in unity

  793. with each

  794. other

  795. and to

  796. himself

  797. in such

  798. a way

  799. that his

  800. greatness

  801. and his

  802. glory

  803. is made

  804. known

  805. to all

  806. the heavenly

  807. realms

  808. God

  809. does this

  810. work

  811. so that

  812. his

  813. magnus

  814. might be

  815. seen

  816. there is

  817. a sense

  818. here

  819. where

  820. right now

  821. God

  822. calls

  823. over

  824. the rulers

  825. and the

  826. authorities

  827. and the

  828. heavenly

  829. realms

  830. and he

  831. says

  832. hey

  833. Gabriel

  834. Michael

  835. have a

  836. look at

  837. that

  838. have a

  839. look at

  840. that

  841. look at

  842. St.

  843. Paul's

  844. Chatswood

  845. that is

  846. what I've

  847. been doing

  848. for all

  849. of history

  850. working

  851. this out

  852. my son

  853. made that

  854. possible

  855. he brought

  856. these diverse

  857. people together

  858. he broke

  859. down the

  860. dividing

  861. walls

  862. and he

  863. says to

  864. the demons

  865. hey

  866. Satan

  867. get over

  868. here

  869. and take

  870. a look

  871. at this

  872. not even

  873. the gates

  874. of hell

  875. are going

  876. to stop

  877. my son

  878. doing that

  879. until I call

  880. them all to

  881. myself

  882. you can't

  883. stop that

  884. every

  885. every tribe

  886. every tribe

  887. and language

  888. and peoples

  889. gathered

  890. together

  891. unified

  892. in my

  893. son

  894. that

  895. displays

  896. the

  897. magnificence

  898. of God

  899. United

  900. Nations

  901. can't do

  902. this

  903. it can't

  904. achieve

  905. this

  906. God

  907. you see

  908. what did

  909. you say

  910. that you

  911. what is

  912. church

  913. about

  914. what did

  915. you say

  916. this morning

  917. you see

  918. before church

  919. is about

  920. serving one

  921. another

  922. before it

  923. is about

  924. learning

  925. more about

  926. God

  927. before it's

  928. about

  929. whatever

  930. other things

  931. you came

  932. up with

  933. it's about

  934. us being

  935. gathered

  936. together

  937. to God

  938. so that

  939. God

  940. looks

  941. magnificent

  942. that's

  943. what it's

  944. about

  945. this

  946. is so

  947. fundamental

  948. for us

  949. to grasp

  950. in fact

  951. I'd say

  952. it's

  953. critical

  954. for us

  955. to grasp

  956. before

  957. church

  958. is about

  959. me

  960. before it's

  961. about

  962. you

  963. before it's

  964. about

  965. us

  966. it's

  967. about

  968. God

  969. this is

  970. his

  971. design

  972. this is

  973. his

  974. grand

  975. plan

  976. for all

  977. time

  978. and

  979. eternity

  980. dare I

  981. say it

  982. transcultural

  983. church is

  984. his

  985. grand

  986. plan

  987. transcultural

  988. church is

  989. his

  990. grand

  991. plan

  992. and I

  993. think this

  994. is again

  995. captured in

  996. our purpose

  997. statement

  998. here at

  999. St.

  1000. Paul's

  1001. treasuring

  1002. Jesus

  1003. together

  1004. for God's

  1005. glory

  1006. and the

  1007. joy

  1008. of all

  1009. peoples

  1010. so let's

  1011. move on

  1012. how to be

  1013. a church

  1014. member on

  1015. purpose

  1016. how do we

  1017. as individuals

  1018. be members

  1019. of a church

  1020. on purpose

  1021. let me say

  1022. first of all

  1023. first of all

  1024. that you

  1025. become a

  1026. member of

  1027. God's

  1028. church

  1029. not by

  1030. completing a

  1031. membership

  1032. course

  1033. church

  1034. or by

  1035. attending a

  1036. church for

  1037. a very

  1038. long time

  1039. that's not

  1040. how you

  1041. become a

  1042. member of

  1043. a church

  1044. you become a

  1045. member of

  1046. God's church

  1047. by repenting

  1048. of living

  1049. independent of

  1050. God

  1051. by putting your

  1052. trust in the

  1053. Lord Jesus

  1054. by receiving the

  1055. Holy Spirit

  1056. who unites you

  1057. with God and

  1058. with other

  1059. believers

  1060. that's how you

  1061. become a member

  1062. of the church

  1063. that's the

  1064. fundamental

  1065. first step

  1066. so you could

  1067. be sitting in

  1068. church for

  1069. decades and

  1070. not taking that

  1071. fundamental first

  1072. step

  1073. there will be

  1074. plenty of

  1075. people in

  1076. heaven who

  1077. haven't done

  1078. the St.

  1079. Paul's

  1080. Chatswood

  1081. pathways

  1082. course

  1083. plenty of

  1084. people

  1085. but there

  1086. won't be

  1087. anyone who

  1088. hasn't repented

  1089. of sins and

  1090. trusted in

  1091. Jesus

  1092. not a single

  1093. one

  1094. and maybe

  1095. today this is

  1096. the first

  1097. fundamental step

  1098. that you need

  1099. to take

  1100. maybe you've

  1101. come along

  1102. you got involved

  1103. in the local

  1104. expression of the

  1105. church and

  1106. you're doing a

  1107. bunch of stuff

  1108. maybe doing a

  1109. bunch of stuff

  1110. for ages

  1111. but you've got

  1112. confused

  1113. you're doing

  1114. step two

  1115. before you even

  1116. got to step

  1117. one

  1118. maybe today's

  1119. the day you

  1120. need to take

  1121. step one

  1122. if you've

  1123. taken step

  1124. one

  1125. then the

  1126. most important

  1127. way you can

  1128. be a member

  1129. on purpose

  1130. at St.

  1131. Paul's

  1132. is to

  1133. embrace the

  1134. vision the

  1135. values

  1136. that we have

  1137. as a church

  1138. our mission

  1139. statement and

  1140. live out our

  1141. core values

  1142. our shared

  1143. values which

  1144. are driven

  1145. by

  1146. God's

  1147. grand plan

  1148. one of the

  1149. key values

  1150. that helps us

  1151. think about

  1152. the sort of

  1153. gathering that

  1154. we are and

  1155. the sort of

  1156. gathering that

  1157. we aspire to

  1158. be at St.

  1159. Paul's is

  1160. treasuring Jesus

  1161. together and

  1162. it was written

  1163. specifically to

  1164. enforce if you

  1165. like to

  1166. highlight the

  1167. need to

  1168. gather and

  1169. how we

  1170. gather let

  1171. me read it

  1172. to you

  1173. having been

  1174. led individually

  1175. by the

  1176. spirit of

  1177. God to

  1178. receive

  1179. Jesus Christ

  1180. as the

  1181. Lord

  1182. Saviour

  1183. and supreme

  1184. treasure of

  1185. our lives

  1186. we now

  1187. most solemnly

  1188. and joyfully

  1189. enter into

  1190. covenant with

  1191. one another

  1192. as one body

  1193. in Christ

  1194. we believe

  1195. the people

  1196. whom Jesus

  1197. has called

  1198. into relationship

  1199. with himself

  1200. are his

  1201. church

  1202. and not

  1203. an institution

  1204. or a

  1205. building

  1206. in an

  1207. age of

  1208. individualism

  1209. we value

  1210. vigilance

  1211. and accountability

  1212. in treasuring

  1213. Jesus

  1214. together

  1215. together

  1216. now in

  1217. Ephesians

  1218. Paul goes

  1219. on to

  1220. spend

  1221. extensive

  1222. time on

  1223. what God's

  1224. new humanity

  1225. his gathering

  1226. his church

  1227. looks like

  1228. in their

  1229. life together

  1230. and

  1231. treasuring

  1232. Jesus

  1233. together

  1234. is a

  1235. value

  1236. that tries

  1237. to capture

  1238. things like

  1239. the rest of

  1240. Ephesians

  1241. and a whole

  1242. heap of

  1243. New Testament

  1244. language

  1245. it's all

  1246. about life

  1247. together

  1248. it's about

  1249. relationships

  1250. it's about

  1251. our

  1252. togetherness

  1253. and like

  1254. all our

  1255. values

  1256. this one

  1257. is highly

  1258. practical

  1259. like all our

  1260. values

  1261. it is

  1262. highly

  1263. practical

  1264. it says

  1265. things like

  1266. as a church

  1267. we are

  1268. committed

  1269. to

  1270. and then

  1271. there's a

  1272. bunch of

  1273. statements

  1274. one of

  1275. them is

  1276. making

  1277. corporate

  1278. worship

  1279. a weekly

  1280. priority

  1281. in other

  1282. words

  1283. if God's

  1284. purpose

  1285. is

  1286. for all

  1287. the time

  1288. and eternity

  1289. to gather

  1290. to himself

  1291. people

  1292. under the

  1293. lordship

  1294. of Christ

  1295. then we

  1296. express

  1297. God's

  1298. ultimate

  1299. goal

  1300. by gathering

  1301. really

  1302. simple

  1303. we gather

  1304. is what

  1305. we do

  1306. in the

  1307. Bible

  1308. to

  1309. magnify

  1310. God

  1311. always

  1312. requires

  1313. the regular

  1314. gathering

  1315. of God's

  1316. people

  1317. so

  1318. I'm not

  1319. going to

  1320. throw

  1321. around

  1322. too

  1323. many

  1324. statistics

  1325. here

  1326. but

  1327. have you

  1328. ever

  1329. calculated

  1330. how many

  1331. gatherings

  1332. you miss

  1333. a year

  1334. did you

  1335. know

  1336. that

  1337. in our

  1338. culture

  1339. regular

  1340. nowadays

  1341. has become

  1342. somewhere

  1343. between

  1344. 30 and

  1345. 40 percent

  1346. attendance

  1347. I'll just

  1348. let that

  1349. sit

  1350. we don't

  1351. need a

  1352. rule

  1353. here

  1354. I'm not

  1355. looking for

  1356. rule

  1357. what we

  1358. need

  1359. is to

  1360. see

  1361. the great

  1362. and the

  1363. gracious

  1364. plan of

  1365. a great

  1366. and a

  1367. gracious

  1368. God

  1369. I said

  1370. it last

  1371. week

  1372. how do

  1373. we grow

  1374. in

  1375. magnifying

  1376. God

  1377. by

  1378. gazing

  1379. on him

  1380. and being

  1381. blown away

  1382. by him

  1383. we need

  1384. to see

  1385. what it

  1386. cost him

  1387. to gather

  1388. us

  1389. together

  1390. and to

  1391. gather

  1392. us to

  1393. himself

  1394. nothing else

  1395. will motivate

  1396. us to

  1397. gather

  1398. no rule

  1399. will motivate

  1400. us to

  1401. gather

  1402. that's

  1403. for sure

  1404. treasuring

  1405. Jesus

  1406. together

  1407. not only

  1408. says that

  1409. we value

  1410. being

  1411. together

  1412. but how

  1413. we value

  1414. being

  1415. together

  1416. we're

  1417. committed

  1418. to

  1419. meeting

  1420. together

  1421. in small

  1422. groups

  1423. for more

  1424. intimate

  1425. opportunities

  1426. for nurture

  1427. for growth

  1428. accountability

  1429. and service

  1430. we are

  1431. committed

  1432. to engaging

  1433. to watch

  1434. over one

  1435. another

  1436. in brotherly

  1437. love

  1438. committed

  1439. to remembering

  1440. one another

  1441. in prayer

  1442. committing

  1443. to aiding

  1444. one another

  1445. in sickness

  1446. and distress

  1447. committed

  1448. to cultivating

  1449. Christian

  1450. sympathy

  1451. and joy

  1452. committed

  1453. to being

  1454. slow

  1455. to take

  1456. offense

  1457. but always

  1458. ready

  1459. for

  1460. reconciliation

  1461. and mindful

  1462. of the

  1463. command

  1464. of our

  1465. savior

  1466. to secure

  1467. without

  1468. delay

  1469. we are

  1470. committed

  1471. to welcoming

  1472. people

  1473. from every

  1474. background

  1475. we are

  1476. committed

  1477. to openness

  1478. towards new

  1479. people

  1480. and the

  1481. avoidance

  1482. of clickiness

  1483. we are

  1484. committed

  1485. to purging

  1486. our lives

  1487. of the

  1488. sin

  1489. that causes

  1490. division

  1491. we are

  1492. committed

  1493. to pursuing

  1494. increasingly

  1495. visible

  1496. authentic

  1497. and practical

  1498. ways of

  1499. loving each

  1500. other

  1501. and patriarchy

  1502. so i am

  1503. want to

1504. the beach sort of stuff.

1505. So get ready for this.

1506. Jesus started it with these words.

1507. A new commandment I give you, love one another.

1508. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

1509. By this all people know that you're my disciples if you love one another.

  1510. John 13, 34, 35.

1511. Paul states the commandment to love each other in more than a dozen ways.

  1512. Romans 12, 5.

1513. In Christ, we who are many for one body,

1514. and each member belongs to all the others.

  1515. Romans 12, 10.

1516. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.

  1517. Again in 12, 10.

1518. Honour one another above yourselves.

  1519. Romans 14, 19.

1520. Make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

  1521. Romans 15, 14.

  1522. Instruct one another.

  1523. 1 Corinthians 12, 25.

1524. There should be no division in the body,

1525. but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

  1526. Galatians 5, 13.

1527. Serve one another in love.

  1528. Galatians 6, 2.

  1529. Carry each other's burdens.

  1530. Ephesians 4, 2.

1531. Be patient, bearing with one another in love.

  1532. Ephesians 4, 32.

1533. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other.

  1534. Ephesians 5, 21.

1535. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  1536. Philippians 2, 3.

1537. In humility, consider others better than yourselves.

  1538. Colossians 3, 9.

1539. Do not lie to one another.

  1540. 1 Thessalonians 4, 18.

  1541. Encourage one another.

  1542. 1 Thessalonians 5, 15.

1543. Always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

  1544. That's Paul.

  1545. Okay.

1546. And then the book of Hebrews joins in the chorus.

1547. Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds.

1548. And do not forget to meet together.

1549. Then James pipes in, in chapter 4, verse 11.

1550. Do not slander one another.

  1551. 5, 9.

1552. Don't grumble against each other.

  1553. 5, 16.

1554. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

1555. And then Peter jumps in, in 1 Peter 4, 9.

1556. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

  1557. 5, 5.

1558. Clothe yourselves with humility towards one another.

1559. And that doesn't even get into John.

  1560. Revelation.

1561. We'll just leave it at that.

1562. What is obvious from all of this is the prominence of loving, Christ-exalting, other person-centered personal relationships.

1563. So let me say it.

1564. There is no such thing as isolated, individualistic, meet-my-needs consumer Christianity in the Bible.

  1565. It doesn't exist.

1566. And it works against all of God's purposes.

1567. You see, a church dater has an attitude towards church that is me-centered.

1568. What can church do for me?

1569. How are my needs and personal preferences going to be met?

  1570. Church daters are independent.

  1571. They're disconnected.

1572. And they're minimally involved in people's lives.

1573. And don't at all like the idea of accountability to one another.

1574. Essentially, however, a church dater is critical.

  1575. They're short on allegiance.

1576. And they are quick to find faults.

1577. They're looking, if you like, for the best product for their price of two hours on a Sunday.

1578. They are, if you like, they're like the lover with a wandering eye, always looking for something better.

1579. The sad thing is, what the church dater is thinking, is working in their favor, is actually working against them.

1580. It results in a serious loss for them and a loss for others.

1581. You cannot fulfill the command to love and to serve and to give by yourself.

1582. Normal, essential Christianity is loving, Christ-exalting, other person-centered, personal relationships in the local church.

1583. And so what we're seeking to do here at St. Paul's is to build a gospel community.

1584. Another way of putting that is what we're seeking to do is to build a supernatural community, rather than simply a natural community.

1585. A natural community is where people feel connected because of a demographic phenomenon.

1586. That is, people who would normally gravitate to each other and find a sense of belonging with each other because of similarities, irrespective of whether gospel is true or not.

  1587. That's natural community.

1588. Like, gathering together with like, with similarities.

1589. Now, that's not entirely a bad thing.

1590. I share common interests with basically all of my friends.

1591. In fact, all of my friends.

1592. I can't imagine not having any common interests with any of you.

1593. I think all of my friends have got common interests of mine.

1594. And so it's not a bad thing to have those connections and affinities here at St. Paul's.

1595. What I want to caution us about is not to think it is the sum total of gospel community and what gospel community is about.

1596. In fact, we do church the way we do church.

1597. With a shared discomfort in order that many more people who are diverse might find affinity in a congregation like this.

1598. But at the end of the day, you can have natural community without Jesus.

1599. And when Jesus becomes dominant and we start sacrificing for the sake of Jesus being dominant so that more people might come to know Jesus,

1600. that natural community gets fractured.

  1601. That's what happens.

1602. The heavenly realms look on and see the wisdom of God when they gaze on supernatural community.

1603. When they see gospel community.

1604. It's the kind of community that could really only exist because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

1605. This is when people who would not gravitate to each other normally or people groups who have open hostility towards each other historically

1606. are drawn together in peace and in love through the unifying work of the Holy Spirit and Christ's work on the cross.

1607. So how do we be church members on purpose?

  1608. Number one, gather.

  1609. Really simple.

1610. That's what God has saved you for together.

1611. Number two, by building supernatural community.

1612. And lastly, by being willing to purposefully fracture the community.

1613. It is awesome to be part of a gospel community that God is growing.

1614. But one of the painful realities is the need to keep fracturing it in order to make space for others to be welcomed into it.

1615. One of our principles is we must fracture in order to welcome and to gather more people in.

1616. When we're comfortable and we're comfortable and we're comfortable and we're settled, we don't want to fracture what we have.

1617. And we start moving from gospel community into natural community and affinities.

1618. It is wonderful to form and to build deep relationships.

  1619. Deep relationships.

  1620. Deep relationships.

1621. But let me say, you can do that naturally.

1622. You can do that naturally.

  1623. Deep relationships.

1624. You don't need the gospel for deep relationships.

1625. What is supernatural is the willingness to fracture community groups, to fracture congregations and time with people I love in order that others might be part of what we have in gospel community.

1626. We must never forget that community is not the goal of the church.

1627. As great as it is, the glory of God is the goal of the church and he is magnified as he gathers more and more people to himself.

1628. That they might see his glory.

1629. And so our core value, treasuring Jesus together, living in unity with one another, accepting and loving each other,

1630. is valuable finally because it makes God look good.

1631. It displays to the world the greatness and the glory and the value of the Lord Jesus and his love towards us.

  1632. It is from God.

  1633. It is through God.

1634. And it is to God.

1635. And we can practice it this morning very simply, very simply by not rushing off.

1636. By engaging with someone totally different this morning.

1637. Rather than just, you know, walk out of here and...

1638. By sitting somewhere different in the...

1639. By going deeper in a relationship.

1640. Now there are a few metaphors that the Bible uses to describe the intimate way that the Lord Jesus views his church.

1641. He calls it his family.

1642. He calls it his body.

1643. He calls it his bride.

1644. He loves his church and he gave himself over to death for his church.

1645. And he looks forward to the day when his bride, in all its perfection, will be presented to him and will be with him forever in delight.

1646. As I said at the beginning, today is the commitment conversation.

1647. Are you still dating his church?

1648. If so, you're still dating him.

1649. You haven't fully surrendered to Jesus.

1650. The church matters because God chose it to show and to tell the universe his wisdom and his love.

1651. This message is the world's only hope.

1652. And if you're a Christian, you have a crucial part in God's eternal plan.

  1653. Your life...

1654. Can I just push this a little bit harder?

1655. Your life is so much bigger than a good job.

1656. It's so much bigger than an understanding spouse.

1657. It's so much more important than non-delinquent kids.

1658. Good friends and an active social life.

1659. It's so much bigger than beautiful gardens and nice holidays and fashionable clothes.

1660. You are part of something immense.

1661. Something that began before you were born and will continue long after you are dead.

1662. God is rescuing fallen, scattered humanity, gathering to himself and progressively shaping them into the likeness of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1663. He gathers you to himself so that you might be taking part in his grand and glorious plan.

1664. Does your life reflect it?

1665. Does your life reflect it?
