  1. The last time we gathered together for Heartbeat,

  2. someone said to me afterwards,

  3. you were just so relaxed,

  4. and it was just great to see you so relaxed and casual up the front.

  5. So I'm going to do that again tonight.

  6. Just bear with me for a moment.

  7. OK, ready to go.

  8. So I think 12 months ago,

  9. we sat in this room,

  10. and we had this in front of us,

  11. Heartbeat, November the 8th,

  12. and it was our picture for what was ahead,

  13. it was the input, in fact,

  14. the entire input of what I gave and talked about.

  15. It was in the beginning of our series on radical,

  16. what it meant to be a radical disciple of the Lord Jesus

  17. and the radical choices that we need to make as a church.

  18. And one of the questions that Stuart Wendy put in front of me

  19. as we were doing the preparation leading up to this

  20. is it would be good to highlight some of the markers,

  21. the changes, the progress we've made in the last 12 months.

  22. Because if you were here 12 months ago,

  23. you would know that this was a time of an element of uncertainty.

  24. We picked radical because of a chance for us to really,

  25. we needed to really focus on what we're doing as a church.

  26. We just found out that Sam Lowe,

  27. one of our ministers here,

  28. was leaving after eight years of ministry,

  29. and it was a time of change and flux for us

  30. and what it meant.

  31. And so I think there's a lot,

  32. when I look back at the last 12 months,

  33. there is so many things to celebrate,

  34. where 12 months ago,

  35. I might have been feeling a little bit uncertain

  36. about where we were or where I was

  37. and how we're going to move forward.

  38. God has just kept pushing us forward

  39. and been building momentum throughout the course this year.

  40. And yet at the same time,

  41. in many ways, it's been a hard year.

  42. I feel it.

  43. I feel like it's been a hard year.

  44. There's been a number of things which have happened,

  45. which I didn't want to happen.

  46. And yet what God does,

  47. he just uses those times to continue to sharpen us.

  48. And so we, as I said,

  49. back in November the 8th last year,

  50. where plan was to move to two congregations,

  51. we've done that.

  52. And our translation team,

  53. which was like two or three people,

  54. has grown to,

  55. we celebrated last time around 14 people,

  56. something like that.

  57. And can I just put out a bit of a thanks here tonight

  58. for Flora and Dorothy,

  59. who have just taken the My Purpose Checkup document

  60. and totally translated the thing

  61. in the last week or two

  62. or in that timeframe.

  63. They just got onto it.

  64. And under their own initiative,

  65. and I just want to say that is superb.

  66. That's a massive amount of work.

  67. So thank you for that.

  68. So we've seen that change.

  69. We saw miraculously with the provision

  70. of the money we raised on Vision Sunday,

  71. as well as the increase we saw in our pledging.

  72. The Barnets,

  73. which we were not expecting to be able to do this,

  74. but Barnets came on full time just after Easter.

  75. And so we were intending on employing a children's pastor.

  76. And we've not just got a children's pastor,

  77. we've got a children's pastor

  78. and a maturity pastor wrapped up into one.

  79. And so that's worth celebrating.

  80. We've just celebrated boom.

  81. That didn't exist 12 months ago.

  82. And one of the things of bringing a children's pastor in

  83. was in fact to start an after school kids ministry

  84. that has now started.

  85. And I think James has done a phenomenal job in that

  86. by building the team first.

  87. But he spent a lot of time preparing the team,

  88. building for it.

  89. And so I'm just so excited about that.

  90. We were looking to employ Takeshi and John.

  91. And frankly, you can say boom all you like,

  92. but no one can say it like Takeshi.

  93. And he ought to be,

  94. he's not here, is he?

  95. He's studying for exams.

  96. I'm assuming he shouldn't have been here.

  97. But yeah, so we've been able to employ these guys

  98. and they've done a fantastic job

  99. and helped in a big way in the transition

  100. from three congregations to two

  101. and turning us more transcultural.

  102. We got a faculty approved to move furniture.

  103. That went through.

  104. 10 years ago, that would have been a bun fight.

  105. Now it's not.

  106. Now it's actually a move forward

  107. forward because we wanted to see more and more people

  108. seated in this building here in the gospel.

  109. So while we haven't broken the 200 barrier,

  110. which we talked a lot about this time last year.

  111. In fact, the goal for that was to do it between,

  112. you know, 2018 and the end of 2020.

  113. 2020, we have building momentum in that direction.

  114. And it's fabulous.

  115. So we're now almost halfway through our vision series for this year.

  116. As you know, our theme is His Purpose, Our Purpose, My Purpose.

  117. And I was asked a really good question

  118. about a week or so ago, a couple of weeks ago.

  119. And the question was,

  120. why this, why now?

  121. Why this, why now?

  122. Why His Purpose, Our Purpose, My Purpose?

  123. Why this and why now?

  124. And my answer is,

  125. because it's all about breaking the 200 barrier.

  126. That's why we're doing it now.

  127. In case you're new to this,

  128. the 200 barrier is, if you like,

  129. a cultural barrier that the vast majority of churches face.

  130. Very few, in fact,

  131. something like only 10% of churches

  132. will ever break the cultural barrier of 200 members.

  133. I introduced it to us at Heartbeat last year

  134. and set the goal that we'd break it before the end of 2020.

  135. The 200 barrier is where a church,

  136. either deliberately or just by the fact of inertia,

  137. decides, subconsciously or consciously,

  138. to stick below 200 members

  139. because it's the way they like things to be.

  140. And I said,

  141. God may choose to never grow St. Paul's,

  142. but for us to deliberately limit the size of the members of St. Paul's,

  143. I find that morally, spiritually reprehensible.

  144. We've got to do everything that we can to grow God's kingdom.

  145. And so one of the key aspects of breaking the 200 barrier

  146. was the need to align the church

  147. around the mission, vision, values and strategy of the church.

  148. That's one of the key elements of breaking the 200 barrier.

  149. And there's at least about eight of them,

  150. but this is one of the key ones.

  151. Alignment is about all ministry pulling in the same direction.

  152. What happens when every ministry pulls in the same direction

  153. is that it forces out the personal agendas

  154. and the personal preferences

  155. that abound in churches that prefer to stay small.

  156. And it causes us to focus on God's mission.

  157. That's what it does.

  158. And so that's what this vision series is about.

  159. It's about alignment.

  160. It's about giving us clarity on our purpose,

  161. on how St. Paul's, in fact, not just St. Paul's purpose,

  162. but how St. Paul's, in fact, structures itself,

  163. how we balance and how we resource these five purposes.

  164. The ministry one's hiding behind me here

  165. because ministry is what we're doing tonight.

  166. So it's balancing these five purposes.

  167. In fact, at this heartbeat last year,

  168. I mentioned six crucial decisions churches need to make

  169. in order to grow in size and depth.

  170. And three of them have to do with this one, ministry.

  171. Have to do with leadership, service, ministry choices.

  172. The course that some of you have been introduced by me,

  173. from me, called Breaking 200 Without Breaking You,

  174. mentions eight key strategies for breaking the 200 barrier.

  175. Five of the eight have to do with this one,

  176. the way we think about ministry,

  177. the way ministry gets done.

  178. And that's our focus tonight.

  179. And the shift that we are looking to do in the next 12 months

  180. is to move away from a church of individuals

  181. filling roles on rosters, plugging gaps, doing a task,

  182. to being a church where we do all of the work of service within teams.

  183. That is, we're doing it together.

  184. We're serving together as opposed to me just doing my bit

  185. that I want to do in my time.

  186. Now, this is simply a flow on from what we looked at last Sunday.

  187. If you were here on Sunday,

  188. you would have heard from me

  189. about Christ-exalting connectedness in God's family.

  190. God's intention is for all of humanity to magnify him.

  191. That's week one.

  192. Week two, God's intention is to draw us together in order to magnify him.

  193. Week three, which is coming up,

  194. now that he's drawn us together to magnify him,

  195. what is his intent for each one of his children?

  196. He wants every one of his children to grow up into the likeness of his true son.

  197. He wants all of his children that he brings into his family

  198. that he gathers to himself to grow up into the likeness of his son,

  199. to have the character of his son.

  200. Week four is that he doesn't want us just to grow up into the likeness of his sons.

  201. He wants us to grow up into the ministry service attitude of his son.

  202. That's God's internal purposes.

  203. And when he builds up his church in that way,

  204. he sends us out into mission.

  205. That's week five.

  206. So let me just take you to the Bible really quickly on this one

  207. and the idea of teams.

  208. Jesus modeled something for us in terms of relationships.

  209. From all of his hundreds of followers,

  210. he chose 72 for a special ministry.

  211. Luke chapter 10, he sends them out two by two.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  212. Doesn't send them out by themselves, sends them out two by two.

  213. And Jesus knows,

  214. Jesus himself didn't,

  215. knew that you could not know 70 people closely.

  216. And so he also,

  217. amongst that 72,

  218. had his 12 for a closer partnership in life and ministry,

  219. where he specifically instilled stuff and did things with them that he didn't do with the 72.

  220. In Mark chapter 3, verse 14,

    Mark 3:14

  221. it says he appointed 12,

  222. designating them apostles that they might be with him.

  223. But even 12 are sometimes too much,

  224. and especially if you're an introvert.

  225. And so Jesus has a closer bond with Peter, James and John,

  226. just three of the 12.

  227. And on a number of occasions,

  228. it was just those three who had a special time of development with Jesus.

  229. Often, in fact,

  230. at the most significant times of Jesus' life and ministry,

  231. those three were there.

  232. And sometimes even three is more than some kinds of friendships will allow.

  233. And Jesus seemed to have a particular bond with John,

  234. which John mentioned several times in his gospel,

  235. because he got an opportunity to do that.

  236. The disciple who Jesus loved.

  237. By the way, that's me.

  238. I'm talking about you.

  239. Don't know what it says about the other 11,

  240. but anyway.

  241. But five times in his gospel,

  242. he refers to himself as the disciple who Jesus loved.

  243. And so Jesus had his crowds,

  244. he had his 72,

  245. he had his 12,

  246. he had his three,

  247. and he had his one.

  248. And as he put his mission and his church in motion,

  249. he not only modeled these various levels of relationship,

  250. he sent his ambassadors out into teams

  251. with different levels of relationship.

  252. See, life and ministry for Jesus

  253. was life and ministry together.

  254. It was not even for him,

  255. it was a solo affair.

  256. Life and ministry for him

  257. was life and ministry together.

  258. Then you get to the Apostle Paul

  259. and he follows the same pattern.

  260. Christian ministry appears,

  261. is a ministry together,

  262. service together.

  263. I don't think it's an accident

  264. that in every single church,

  265. the Apostle Paul planted,

  266. go and read Acts on this,

  267. he appointed not one elder and pastor,

  268. but multiple elders.

  269. And when Paul and Barnabas,

  270. they had their tiff and they fell out,

  271. and they were wondering what to do

  272. with John Mark who abandoned them

  273. on the first mission,

  274. these two giants of the faith

  275. did not have a falling out and disappear

  276. and do their own thing.

  277. They formed new teams,

  278. got the blessing of the church,

  279. and then they were sent out.

  280. Barnabas took Mark with him,

  281. he sailed to Cyprus,

  282. Paul chose Silas,

  283. and he departed in Acts 15, 39, 40.

  284. When he met Timothy in Acts 16,

  285. he asked Timothy to travel with him

  286. as his ministry co-worker,

  287. even though Timothy was the junior,

  288. learner,

  289. just a kid,

  290. learning still.

  291. And over the next six years,

  292. of the 13 letters that Paul wrote,

  293. he addresses them to the churches

  294. as coming from him and Timothy,

  295. even though Paul was the one who wrote.

  296. He wanted to send it from the team.

  297. Now, of course,

  298. the pattern of our life together

  299. is not just a matter of ministry,

  300. strategy,

  301. or partnership.

  302. I said on Sunday,

  303. the New Testament is just,

  304. is just this dominance

  305. of connectedness language.

  306. And so I want to take us

  307. to one of those passages now,

  308. really quickly,

  309. 1 Corinthians 12,

  310. 12 to 27.

  311. If you've got your Bibles,

  312. if you've got Bibles apps or whatever,

  313. open them up now.

  314. I'm going to jump through this really quickly.

  315. I want to see six things,

  316. briefly,

  317. this is not six,

  318. this is not a six-point sermon,

  319. it's not double length,

  320. this is six things,

  321. really briefly,

  322. that highlight

  323. about life together in here.

  324. So,

  325. first of all,

  326. it says,

  327. the church is a body

  328. that's made up of many parts.

  329. Made up of many parts.

  330. And without the parts,

  331. there is no body.

  332. Church is made up of many body,

  333. many parts.

  334. It's a body made up of many parts,

  335. but without the parts,

  336. there is no body.

  337. I went looking for my Mr. Potato Head today.

  338. When I say mine,

  339. it's the kids.

  340. You know,

  341. it was beside my bed,

  342. but not anymore.

  343. I went looking for it today,

  344. because it would have been great

  345. to have it here in front of us,

  346. but imagine Mr. Potato Head

  347. and

  348. with just the body,

  349. but no bits attached to him.

  350. That's the picture here,

  351. that it's not a body

  352. without the parts.

  353. Number two,

  354. verse 12,

  355. the unity of the body

  356. is achieved

  357. through the diversity

  358. of the parts.

  359. That is both the diversity

  360. of the people

  361. and the diversity

  362. of the gifting

  363. of the people.

  364. Verse 12,

  365. the body is a unit,

  366. though it be made up

  367. of many parts,

  368. and though all its parts

  369. are many,

  370. they form one body.

  371. So,

  372. you'd have Mr. Potato Head,

  373. you'd put all the arms on

  374. and the hat on

  375. and the legs on

  376. and nose and the ears

  377. and everything,

  378. you go,

  379. there it is.

  380. It's now looking

  381. like it did on the box.

  382. It's functional.

  383. Number three,

  384. third point,

  385. the diversity of the parts,

  386. all the diversity of the parts,

  387. all the difference of the parts,

  388. serve the unity

  389. and the function of the body.

  390. So,

  391. verse 14,

  392. now the body is not made

  393. of one part,

  394. but a many.

  395. If the foot should say,

  396. because I'm not a hand,

  397. I do not belong to the body,

  398. it would not for that reason

  399. cease to be part of the body.

  400. And if the ear should say,

  401. because I'm not an eye,

  402. I do not belong to the body,

  403. it would not for that reason

  404. cease to be part of the body.

  405. If the whole body were an eye,

  406. where would the sense of smell be,

  407. or sense of hearing be?

  408. What?

  409. Yeah, that's right.

  410. If all I couldn't hear,

  411. that's right.

  412. It's the Bible right here?

  413. If the whole body were an ear,

  414. where would the sense of smell be?

  415. And so,

  416. if you had my Mr. Potato Head here

  417. and just had all the arms,

  418. you go,

  419. well,

  420. that's dysfunctional.

  421. That doesn't,

  422. and yet,

  423. that's how we often work church to be.

  424. We often have church in that way.

  425. When we work church to be the homogenous unit principle,

  426. where we like,

  427. gather with like,

  428. then it looks like a dysfunctional,

  429. weird looking Mr. Potato Head.

  430. Number four,

  431. all the parts need each other

  432. if the body is to function correctly.

  433. In other words,

  434. whatever your part is in the body,

  435. don't ever say,

  436. I have no need for that other part over there.

  437. Verse 20,

  438. the eye cannot say to the hand,

  439. I don't need you.

  440. And the head cannot say to the feet,

  441. I don't need you.

  442. On the contrary,

  443. those parts of the body

  444. that seem to be weaker

  445. are indispensable.

  446. And the parts that we think are less honorable,

  447. we treat with special honor.

  448. And the parts that are unpresentable

  449. are treated with special modesty,

  450. while our presentable parts

  451. need no special treatment.

  452. But God has combined the members of the body

  453. and has given greater honor

  454. to the parts that lack it.

  455. So the negative warning here

  456. is don't say,

  457. I don't need those other bits.

  458. I don't need those other bits.

  459. Paul says here

  460. that those who we view as weaker

  461. or unnecessary or unimportant

  462. are absolutely necessary.

  463. every,

  464. I mean,

  465. this church functions

  466. on the gifts of so many people

  467. working together.

  468. Sunday by Sunday,

  469. you see that.

  470. There is so many things

  471. that happen in the background

  472. that you don't even see,

  473. that you know.

  474. And without those things

  475. not functioning,

  476. the place starts to fall apart

  477. real quick.

  478. see what happens

  479. if the person

  480. who normally cuts the grass

  481. doesn't turn up

  482. for three weeks.

  483. The so-called unnecessary bits.

  484. See what happens then.

  485. The person who

  486. most of you don't see

  487. who weeds the gardens.

  488. How quickly it would deteriorate.

  489. How quickly people would say,

  490. well,

  491. no one's living there.

  492. Verse 22,

  493. on the contrary,

  494. those parts of the body

  495. that seem to be weaker

  496. are indispensable.

  497. They're not just optional,

  498. they're necessary.

  499. Not just helpful,

  500. they are necessary.

  501. Number five,

  502. let's have the same care

  503. for one another

  504. so that,

  505. this is verse 25,

  506. so that there should be

  507. no division in the body

  508. but that its parts

  509. should have equal concern

  510. for each other.

  511. If one part suffers,

  512. every part suffers with it.

  513. If one part is honoured,

  514. every part rejoices with it.

  515. These verses are all about

  516. what James would call

  517. favouritism.

  518. Certain parts

  519. that we'd want to honour

  520. over more,

  521. others,

  522. James would say,

  523. no, no,

  524. there's no favouritism

  525. with the church

  526. and this is saying

  527. care for everyone equally,

  528. honour all equally.

  529. It's no mistake

  530. that this description

  531. of the body

  532. is immediately followed

  533. by 1 Corinthians 13.

  534. The great chapter of love.

  535. Whatever our gifting,

  536. it is only effective

  537. if it is used in love.

  538. Number six,

  539. if only my Sunday sermons

  540. move this quickly.

  541. Number six

  542. is an encouragement

  543. to trust in God

  544. who composes the body

  545. as he wills to compose it.

  546. To trust God for this.

  547. Verse 18,

  548. in fact,

  549. God has arranged

  550. the parts in the body,

  551. every one of them,

  552. just as he wanted them to be.

  553. Let's give thanks to God

  554. that he has chosen,

  555. that he has ordered,

  556. that he has appointed,

  557. that he has distributed gifts

  558. at his goodwill

  559. for the unity of the church.

  560. That ought to encourage us,

  561. it ought to humble us,

  562. regardless of whether

  563. we hold a prominent place

  564. or we don't have

  565. a prominent place

  566. in the body.

  567. God has given you

  568. your place.

  569. And yet,

  570. this text

  571. ends

  572. with this

  573. final challenge.

  574. We're told in verse 18

  575. that God arranged the parts

  576. to everyone

  577. that he wants them to be,

  578. but somehow,

  579. verse 18

  580. doesn't negate

  581. verse 31

  582. where Paul says,

  583. but eagerly desire

  584. the greater gifts.

  585. In other words,

  586. grow up

  587. in your service.

  588. Now,

  589. you can't get

  590. the greater gifts

  591. unless God chooses

  592. to give them to you,

  593. but presumably here,

  594. their earnest desire

  595. and preparing

  596. of themselves

  597. is seen

  598. as a preliminary

  599. to receiving

  600. the greater gift,

  601. at least in some cases.

  602. And so,

  603. the challenge here,

  604. I think,

  605. and this is something

  606. we're intending on

  607. deliberately picking up,

  608. quite intentionally picking up

  609. in the next 12 months

  610. in St. Paul's,

  611. is to,

  612. is the challenge

  613. to go further,

  614. the challenge

  615. to train,

  616. to develop,

  617. to equip others,

  618. to recruit,

  619. to seek new opportunities

  620. to serve.

  621. That's the individual

  622. challenge for us all.

  623. And,

  624. and the other thing

  625. that we're seeking to do

  626. is that this

  627. connectedness

  628. and interdependency

  629. culture

  630. that you see

  631. in the New Testament,

  632. the language

  633. of the New Testament,

  634. is something

  635. that we traditionally

  636. really emphasize

  637. through community groups

  638. and we're going to

  639. continue to emphasize

  640. that through community groups

  641. when everyone in the community

  642. groups and connected,

  643. but it's also

  644. the way we want to see

  645. our ministry done

  646. amongst us.

  647. Connectedness.

  648. Working as part

  649. of a team.

  650. Can I just divert

  651. a little bit here

  652. and emphasize

  653. this point?

  654. I've been here

  655. for

  656. nine and a half years.

  657. possibly

  658. the greatest delight

  659. I have had

  660. as a senior minister

  661. of St. Paul's

  662. is the team

  663. that I work with

  664. day by day.

  665. That,

  666. that's for me,

  667. stands out

  668. as the high point

  669. of my nine and a half years

  670. at St. Paul's.

  671. Without a doubt.

  672. And I would extend that

  673. to talk about

  674. wardens and parish council

  675. as well.

  676. Without a doubt.

  677. I have the privilege

  678. of working with

  679. a number of staff

  680. and,

  681. and a good number

  682. of staff

  683. over

  684. the time

  685. that I've been here

  686. and a good number

  687. of that,

  688. those staff

  689. for some time

  690. who have

  691. all contributed

  692. to my growth

  693. as a disciple

  694. and contributed

  695. to me

  696. in ministry,

  697. in sharpening

  698. my ministry skills.

  699. We have worked

  700. closely together.

  701. I said to someone

  702. recently,

  703. when Sam left,

  704. it really hurt me

  705. in the sense of

  706. I really felt

  707. his loss.

  708. Think about this.

  709. I work with him

  710. for five days a week.

  711. We traveled,

  712. as I said,

  713. I think it is farewell.

  714. I've been in hotel rooms

  715. more with Sam

  716. than anyone else

  717. apart from Nat.

  718. We work together

  719. closely

  720. five days a week

  721. for eight years.

  722. That's equivalent

  723. of 40 years

  724. of Sundays.

  725. That's equivalent

  726. of 40 years

  727. of Sundays.

  728. Together,

  729. as a staff team,

  730. we have had

  731. greater impact

  732. than any of us

  733. could have had

  734. individually

  735. exercising our gifts.

  736. We have collectively

  737. deepened

  738. and expanded

  739. the ministry

  740. of St. Paul's.

  741. I want to suggest

  742. that the reason

  743. that we continue

  744. to push forward

  745. as a church

  746. is because

  747. you have

  748. a phenomenal

  749. staff team.

  750. I'm not talking

  751. individually.

  752. Every one of us

  753. individually

  754. is weak

  755. and we have

  756. our failings

  757. and our blind spots

  758. and our

  759. bits where we're

  760. not gifted at.

  761. But collectively,

  762. we are strong.

  763. we are strong.

  764. And collectively,

  765. we've had a greater

  766. impact than any of us

  767. could have done

  768. by ourselves.

  769. And I would suggest

  770. that collectively,

  771. we have deepened,

  772. we've expanded

  773. the ministry.

  774. God has made us

  775. all very differently

  776. and yet collectively,

  777. we make up

  778. for our weaknesses.

  779. We've all grown

  780. together in

  781. gospel conviction.

  782. We've grown

  783. together in

  784. character

  785. and we've grown

  786. together in

  787. ministry competencies.

  788. We have

  789. fellowship,

  790. we have

  791. encouragement,

  792. we have fun

  793. and we share

  794. the burdens

  795. and the joys

  796. of life.

  797. Sometimes it feels

  798. more like the

  799. burdens and the joys

  800. but we share the

  801. burdens and the

  802. joys of life.

  803. If you've never

  804. noticed it before

  805. and this is

  806. not,

  807. if you think

  808. this is me

  809. being proud

  810. then forgive me

  811. for that

  812. but just hear

  813. the point.

  814. We have

  815. modelled

  816. something,

  817. the staff team

  818. over the last

  819. nine years or so

  820. and particularly

  821. increasingly so

  822. in the last

  823. four years

  824. have modelled

  825. something as

  826. a staff team

  827. that the church

  828. should see,

  829. acknowledge

  830. and duplicate

  831. in all its

  832. ministry teams.

  833. I think it's

  834. the best

  835. illustration I

  836. can throw in

  837. front of you.

  838. It needs to be

  839. duplicated in

  840. every ministry

  841. team.

  842. We want to

  843. see it deployed.

  844. We are modelling

  845. something that we

  846. want deployed

  847. across the church.

  848. everyone

  849. serving as

  850. part of a

  851. team,

  852. loving each

  853. other,

  854. growing in

  855. character,

  856. in competency

  857. and together

  858. you will

  859. achieve more.

  860. Every

  861. member of

  862. St Paul's

  863. serving as

  864. part of a

  865. team on

  866. purpose.

  867. Now,

  868. I have

  869. gone over

  870. my time

  871. already.

  872. Do you

  873. want to

  874. just watch

  875. the video

  876. for a

  877. little bit?

  878. Is that

  879. alright?

  880. And then I'll

  881. come back.

  882. Let's have a

  883. break there.

  884. So it is

  885. turning into a

  886. sermon.

  887. The six

  888. points are

  889. over by the

  890. way.

  891. So this

  892. is just a

  893. bit of a

  894. taster for

  895. team ministry

  896. if we can

  897. get that

  898. up.

  899. Before we

  900. do,

  901. let me just

  902. hit a couple

  903. of things.

  904. As we

  905. move on,

  906. one of the

  907. things I

  908. said some

  909. time ago

  910. was that

  911. each church

  912. needs clear

  913. expectations on

  914. what are we

  915. expecting for

  916. our disciples.

  917. So what's

  918. our discipleship

  919. pathway?

  920. What does it

  921. mean to grow

  922. up to be a

  923. member of

  924. this church

  925. and to

  926. grow as a

  927. disciple of

  928. this church?

  929. And secondly,

  930. what is the

  931. ministry pathway?

  932. I'm happy to

  933. say that both

  934. of those things

  935. have now been

  936. developed for

  937. St Paul's.

  938. The

  939. discipleship

  940. pathway,

  941. it's right

  942. there,

  943. it's up in

  944. front of me,

  945. it's up there,

  946. has been

  947. developed.

  948. And you'll

  949. notice that

  950. each one of

  951. these five

  952. purposes is

  953. reflected up

  954. there.

  955. The goal we

  956. have for every

  957. member of St

  958. Paul's,

  959. including myself,

  960. is to continue

  961. to reassess,

  962. am I on

  963. purpose?

  964. For God's

  965. purpose,

  966. for my life,

  967. for this

  968. church,

  969. am I aligning

  970. myself with

  971. it?

  972. Am I growing

  973. in each one?

  974. Which is my

  975. weakness one that

  976. I need to work

  977. on and have a

  978. plan in the

  979. next six months,

  980. 12 months,

  981. to get better

  982. at that

  983. particular

  984. purpose,

  985. whatever it

  986. is.

  987. And so you've

  988. seen that

  989. rolling out

  990. through the

  991. course of

  992. this vision

  993. series.

  994. I want to

  995. commend James

  996. again for

  997. that and

  998. developing that

  999. for us.

  1000. Secondly,

  1001. on your

  1002. seats,

  1003. you've got

  1004. this big

  1005. thing.

  1006. You'll

  1007. notice that

  1008. all of our

  1009. ministry teams

  1010. are connected

  1011. in one way or

  1012. another to our

  1013. five purposes.

  1014. purposes.

  1015. And this is

  1016. just a snapshot,

  1017. if you like,

  1018. a visual image.

  1019. Thanks, Jess,

  1020. for putting this

  1021. together of how

  1022. every ministry

  1023. at St. Paul's

  1024. is connected to

  1025. one of these

  1026. purposes,

  1027. bringing greater

  1028. alignment to

  1029. every single

  1030. ministry team.

  1031. You know where

  1032. you fit,

  1033. what your purpose

  1034. is,

  1035. and how your

  1036. purpose fits

  1037. into the

  1038. mission and

  1039. vision of

  1040. St. Paul's.

  1041. That's what

  1042. this is all

  1043. about.

  1044. Not every

  1045. single ministry

  1046. team is there,

  1047. and you'll

  1048. notice there

  1049. are two

  1050. things,

  1051. such as

  1052. ministry

  1053. support,

  1054. which is

  1055. not quite

  1056. red,

  1057. it's an

  1058. orange,

  1059. it's out

  1060. there a

  1061. little bit.

  1062. Ministry

  1063. support's

  1064. job is

  1065. effectively

  1066. to support

  1067. the five

  1068. purposes,

  1069. and next

  1070. gen,

  1071. because it

  1072. is a

  1073. unique

  1074. ministry

  1075. and that

  1076. certain

  1077. requirements

  1078. are there

  1079. because you're

  1080. leading young

  1081. people,

  1082. it sits

  1083. over slightly

  1084. to one

  1085. side,

  1086. and because

  1087. of the age

  1088. of the people

  1089. that are there,

  1090. it sits to

  1091. one side.

  1092. However,

  1093. all five

  1094. purposes get

  1095. worked out

  1096. in next-gen

  1097. ministry.

  1098. We just

  1099. want to

  1100. separate them

  1101. out and

  1102. make them

  1103. slightly

  1104. distinct because

  1105. there are

  1106. certain higher

  1107. requirements for

  1108. leaders in

  1109. that area.

  1110. So ministry

  1111. teams,

  1112. we've got

  1113. alignment as

  1114. a disciple,

  1115. where you

  1116. fit.

  1117. As a

  1118. disciple,

  1119. my expectation

  1120. as a member

  1121. of St. Paul's

  1122. is to grow

  1123. in these

  1124. five purpose

  1125. areas.

  1126. Where do I

  1127. serve?

  1128. In one of

  1129. the teams,

  1130. in one of

  1131. the five

  1132. purpose areas,

  1133. and our

  1134. goal for

  1135. every member

  1136. is that when

  1137. you are in

  1138. a ministry

  1139. team,

  1140. if you move

  1141. over to

  1142. ministry pathway

  1143. now,

  1144. is that you

  1145. will know

  1146. at what

  1147. level you

  1148. fit,

  1149. who you

  1150. report to,

  1151. and what

  1152. your job

  1153. description and

  1154. expectations are

  1155. within that

  1156. ministry team.

  1157. So that's the

  1158. ministry pathway.

  1159. We like to

  1160. see everyone

  1161. fit into the

  1162. ministry pathway,

  1163. and on

  1164. top of that

  1165. is that what

  1166. sits over the

  1167. top of a

  1168. ministry pathway

  1169. interacting with

  1170. a ministry

  1171. pathway is

  1172. ministry grid,

  1173. which is what

  1174. that lady just

  1175. mentioned in the

  1176. video.

  1177. It's a whole

  1178. training program

  1179. that's,

  1180. it's an online

  1181. training program

  1182. designed to

  1183. develop you in

  1184. whatever part of

  1185. the ministry

  1186. pathway you

  1187. fit.

  1188. And so the

  1189. intention as you

  1190. move forward

  1191. is not to

  1192. hand someone,

  1193. there's your job

  1194. description,

  1195. we need you to

  1196. help out at

  1197. boom,

  1198. we'll see you

  1199. if something

  1200. goes wrong.

  1201. And there's

  1202. your job,

  1203. go and fill

  1204. that function.

  1205. Ministry is

  1206. part of your

  1207. discipling,

  1208. it's part of

  1209. your connectedness

  1210. of growing a

  1211. disciple of the

  1212. Lord Jesus.

  1213. And so our

  1214. plan as we

  1215. move into,

  1216. to roll it out

  1217. totally between

  1218. now and the

  1219. end of next

  1220. year is for

  1221. every person

  1222. to know where

  1223. they fit in

  1224. ministry teams,

  1225. to be placed in

  1226. ministry teams,

  1227. to know where

  1228. they fit in

  1229. that ministry

  1230. team,

  1231. to be developing

  1232. in that ministry

  1233. team and to be

  1234. coached in that

  1235. ministry team so

  1236. that you've got

  1237. relational connection

  1238. as you develop.

  1239. That's the plan

  1240. to roll out,

  1241. that's our major

  1242. agenda,

  1243. is to get the

  1244. members of St.

  1245. Paul's engaged

  1246. and on purpose

  1247. in the next

  1248. 12 months.

  1249. We see it as

  1250. crucial in us

  1251. breaking the

  1252. 200 barrier.

  1253. So, by this

  1254. time next year,

  1255. I would love to

  1256. be standing in

  1257. heartbeat and for

  1258. everyone here to

  1259. be able to say,

  1260. I know what my

  1261. role is,

  1262. I know how this

  1263. role serves the

  1264. vision,

  1265. I know how this

  1266. role is connected

  1267. to the purpose,

  1268. one of the five

  1269. purposes,

  1270. I'm on a

  1271. team,

  1272. I know every

  1273. member of my

  1274. team,

  1275. I know who my

  1276. leader is,

  1277. and I'm being

  1278. coached and

  1279. developed personally

  1280. and intentionally

  1281. by my leader.

  1282. That's what I'd

1283. like to see by this

  1284. time next year.
