  1. Whatever you set your mind to, you can do it.

  2. You can change the world.

  3. And so you have this desire to be able to change the world.

  4. If, however, you're a parent of a millennial,

  5. most likely you're a baby boomer or something like that,

  6. your big desire right now is to leave a legacy.

  7. That's all you're thinking about, death.

  8. And what's my mark on the world?

  9. And you're starting to get kind of depressed and everything like about it.

  10. But on the whole, most of us have to come to grips with

  11. that is that our individual actions are a bit like stones

  12. tossed into a very large lake.

  13. The reality is we are remembered by just a few.

  14. And our contribution to humanity is remembered by even less.

  15. Most of us have to face the fact that we will drop the little pebble of our lives

  16. into the turbulent ocean of world events.

  17. And in no time at all, the surface will bear no trace of our passing.

  18. That's kind of depressing, especially if you're a millennial

  19. and you're kind of positive right now.

  20. But it is this sense of purposelessness

  21. that is one of the chief anxieties of life.

  22. What is the purpose of life?

  23. Big, big anxiety.

  24. Big, big anxiety.

  25. Big, big anxiety.

  26. So if you've just tuned in today,

  27. then you've arrived at Vision Sunday.

  28. And it's the climax of our Vision series.

  29. And this year we've been discovering or rediscovering

  30. or aligning ourselves to God's purpose.

  31. We've called this whole series,

  32. His Purpose, Our Purpose, My Purpose.

  33. In week one, we asked the question,

  34. what's the purpose of life?

  35. And we saw that God created all things

  36. and that He saved us for His glory.

  37. And we used the word magnification to summarize that purpose.

  38. In week two, we narrowed it down.

  39. What's the purpose of the church,

  40. the people that He saved?

  41. And we saw that God has gathered us together

  42. as a new people, a new humanity for His glory.

  43. We do it together.

  44. And we used the word membership to describe that.

  45. Week three, we investigated what is God's purpose for us

  46. as He's gathered people.

  47. And we discovered it was to transform us

  48. into the image of His true Son, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  49. because God desires to have children in His own image.

  50. And we used the word maturity to summarize all that.

  51. So God has created us.

  52. He saved us.

  53. He's gathered us.

  54. He's growing us.

  55. And last week, we saw that He's not just growing us,

  56. but He's giving us a job to do.

  57. And that job is to serve Him in the world.

  58. And we used the word ministry to summarize all of that.

  59. Today, we're looking at what is the work

  60. that God has called us to do in His world.

  61. And we're summarizing this with our final M,

  62. and that's mission.

  63. So I'm up to point number one, what is God's mission?

  64. See, one of the ways we discover what is God's mission

  65. is to, that is, what is the work that God's doing in the world,

  66. is to look at the end of history as God describes it.

  67. Well, you know, therefore the goal of all things.

  68. And we can learn our purpose for being

  69. just by looking at what is God's goal in all time and eternity.

  70. And what we discover, it's kind of like a finish line

  71. that we're running towards.

  72. But before we go to the end of all things,

  73. let's go back to the beginning of what God's work is in this world.

  74. This is God's story.

  75. It's His mission, His work in His world.

  76. God's storyline has four main chapters to it.

  77. Creation, new creation,

  78. for redemption and new creation.

  79. So let's look at those four things really quickly.

  80. This is time and eternity, history, everything,

  81. as God sees it.

  82. So creation, Genesis 1,

  83. is the God who stands outside of all that's created.

  84. The God who always existed from everlasting to everlasting,

  85. created all things by speaking them into existence.

  86. You see that in Genesis 1 and 2.

  87. He made the first people, Adam and Eve,

  88. in His image.

  89. All people from Adam and Eve also bear the image of God.

  90. We saw that earlier on in this series.

  91. The great American theologian, Jonathan Edwards,

  92. wrote a booklet, a paper called

  93. A Dissertation Concerning the End for Which God Created the World.

  94. That's the shortened version.

  95. He's much longer versions in terms of the titles.

  96. And he says there that the only reason

  97. that God would have created us

  98. was not to get the cosmic love and joy for relationship.

  99. That is, God wasn't hungering for relationship

  100. as some people hunger to be loved by someone

  101. so they go and have a baby.

  102. It's not that kind of an idea.

  103. But the only reason

  104. is to share the cosmic love and joy

  105. that He already had

  106. within Himself in the Trinity,

  107. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  108. And so the storyline of the Bible

  109. contains the only storyline in history

  110. where there is a divine creator

  111. who creates everything motivated by love.

  112. God's design is to have children in His own image

  113. sharing in His perfect relationship.

  114. sharing in His perfect love.

  115. So that's creation.

  116. Fall.

  117. There is solidarity in the image of God.

  118. All people bear the image of God,

  119. but there's also solidarity in sin.

  120. Genesis 3, Adam and Eve reject God.

  121. They decide, well, we want to do things our way.

  122. All people have followed suit

  123. since Adam and Eve living life

  124. with no consideration for God.

  125. We assume right from the very beginning

  126. that God hasn't got love as His main motive.

  127. That God is not actually ultimately loving.

  128. That He's actually holding back on us in some way.

  129. He's not giving us everything that we should have.

  130. He's put constraints around us

  131. and we don't like constraints.

  132. And because of our special dignity

  133. as people made in the image of God,

  134. image bearers,

  135. God holds us especially accountable

  136. in a way that He doesn't hold

  137. the rest of the universe accountable.

  138. And we see Him handing His people over for judgment.

  139. Judgment in Genesis 3,

  140. sorry, Genesis 11,

  141. as it is in Genesis 4,

  142. is He scatters people from His presence.

  143. Right throughout the Bible,

  144. God's judgment is to scatter them

  145. away from relationship with Him.

  146. So in Genesis 11,

  147. He scatters people across the earth.

  148. He confuses all of their language

  149. so they would not work together

  150. and certainly not work together

  151. in order to depose God.

  152. So relationship with God

  153. and relationship with each other

  154. and in fact the created order

  155. is deeply fractured

  156. because of the fall.

  157. Then we've got redemption.

  158. Chapter number 3.

  159. But God doesn't just act in judgment.

  160. He also has the plan to reverse everything.

  161. In Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  162. to understand your Bible,

  163. you've got 11 chapters

  164. and then you've got Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  165. And Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  166. is where the hinge of the Bible,

  167. it's where everything hinges here.

  168. This is the beginning

  169. of the chapter of redemption.

  170. This is the turning point of the Bible.

  171. It's the beginning of God's plan of redemption

  172. that began with a promise to Abraham

  173. that all peoples on earth

  174. would be blessed through Abraham.

  175. God's intention is to reverse judgment.

  176. It's a plan that's worked out through history,

  177. finds its culmination

  178. in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

  179. And this is how Galatians 3 puts it

  180. in the New Testament.

  181. You are all sons of God

  182. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  183. There is neither Jew nor Greek,

  184. slave nor free,

  185. male nor female,

  186. for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  187. If you belong to Christ,

  188. then you are Abraham's seed.

  189. You're someone who's inherited his promise

  190. and heirs according to the promise.

  191. So Jesus takes the judgment of God

  192. for our sin upon himself.

  193. He dies the death that we should have died,

  194. but he rises victorious over sin

  195. so that everyone who puts their trust in Jesus

  196. is now gathered back into relationship with God

  197. and to each other.

  198. Jesus forms a new community,

  199. a new humanity,

  200. a new people for God,

  201. new sons and daughters

  202. made in the image of God,

  203. not just in a physical sense

  204. or relational sense,

  205. but in a deeply connected sense,

  206. doing what our Father wants us to do.

  207. He calls it the church.

  208. So all the former divining walls of hostility

  209. between God have been broken down

  210. as they have also with God.

  211. And as a result of Jesus' work of reconciliation,

  212. calling people back to each other

  213. and back to God,

  214. Jesus calls his church

  215. to take this good news of reconciliation

  216. through the Lord Jesus

  217. to the ends of the earth,

  218. making disciples of every nation,

  219. people and language.

  220. That is how we take part in God's work,

  221. his story,

  222. his mission in the world.

  223. And if you're sitting here right now,

  224. you are currently in chapter three.

  225. We're all in chapter three.

  226. But there's a chapter four.

  227. And chapter four of God's story

  228. is not the end of it.

  229. It's actually the beginning of a new story.

  230. As C.S. Lewis wrote,

  231. and I'm going off the top of my head here,

  232. C.S. Lewis wrote in his booklet,

  233. The Last Battle Cry,

  234. he said the final chapter is in fact

  235. the actual story.

  236. It's like everything to open

  237. the final chapter of the book,

  238. your whole lives have been waiting

  239. for the final chapter to open,

  240. and it is a chapter that never closes.

  241. Everything is preparation for chapter four.

  242. It's a chapter where God reigns forever.

  243. There's no more evil.

  244. There's no more sin, carnage.

  245. There's no more death.

  246. There's no more mourning.

  247. There's no more tears.

  248. In Revelation five,

  249. we get a glimpse of how

  250. Jesus brings history to its final goal.

  251. In verse nine,

  252. John tells us why Jesus is worthy to open,

  253. the book of the end of history,

  254. so that things unfold according to the plan of God.

  255. It says,

  256. Jesus is worthy because of how his death

  257. relates to all peoples of earth.

  258. You are worthy to take the scroll,

  259. to open its seals,

  260. because you were slain,

  261. and with your blood you purchased men for God

  262. from every tribe and language

  263. and people and nation.

  264. You have made them to be

  265. a kingdom of priests

  266. to serve our God,

  267. and they will reign on the earth.

  268. You see,

  269. the reason Jesus has the right

  270. to open the book of history

  271. is that by his death,

  272. he has ransomed people for God,

  273. for the glory of God

  274. and the worship of God

  275. from every tribe and language

  276. and people and nation.

  277. It was God's design

  278. in the death of Jesus

  279. to ransom some

  280. from every kind of race

  281. and language

  282. and make them into

  283. one people,

  284. a new kingdom,

  285. his much-loved children.

  286. And his much-loved children

  287. will have one king over them,

  288. that is,

  289. they would live with Jesus

  290. as their supreme treasure

  291. and Lord.

  292. Jesus is the one

  293. who unites them.

  294. Jesus is the one

  295. to whom they live for.

  296. And they will all be priests.

  297. They will be full-time,

  298. this is what we saw last week,

  299. they'll be full-time worshippers

  300. and servants of Jesus.

  301. Jesus died to ransom

  302. subjects for the king

  303. and worshippers for the king

  304. from every people group

  305. in history.

  306. All the scattered ones,

  307. all the ones once separated

  308. from God

  309. and from each other

  310. are now brought together

  311. under the reign of Jesus

  312. in finding God's blessing

  313. as promised to Abraham.

  314. And so God's big story,

  315. his mission,

  316. his work in the world

  317. through all time and space

  318. is for people to come

  319. under the authority of Jesus

  320. to turn to him

  321. in repentance and faith

  322. and receive forgiveness of sins

  323. and eternal life

  324. and live for the honour

  325. of Jesus forever.

  326. That's God's big plan.

  327. God's purpose for all things,

  328. as revealed in the biblical storyline,

  329. is the reason why

  330. this church has a purpose statement

  331. that says

  332. we exist to,

  333. we're treasuring Jesus

  334. for God's glory

  335. and the joy of all peoples.

  336. And this vision series

  337. over these five weeks

  338. is an attempt

  339. to get greater clarity

  340. and alignment

  341. between,

  342. alignment behind

  343. God's vision

  344. in the world

  345. as it's worked out

  346. in this church.

  347. How we do it.

  348. Okay.

  349. That's point one.

  350. That's God's mission.

  351. That's how he's designed

  352. time and eternity.

  353. That's his purposes.

  354. Point two

  355. is

  356. what does it look like

  357. to be captured

  358. by God's work

  359. in the world?

  360. So if you've got

  361. someone beside you

  362. who's going to sleep

  363. right now,

  364. give them a

  365. loving,

  366. gentle,

  367. but firm

  368. elbow

  369. in the ribs.

  370. If you're distracted

  371. by Facebook

  372. or by something else,

  373. have your moment,

  374. turn it off

  375. and listen to this.

  376. This is so,

  377. so important

  378. that you get this.

  379. What does it look like

  380. to live

  381. with God's mission

  382. as the driving

  383. force

  384. of your life?

  385. When his first

  386. disciples,

  387. Jesus walks along,

  388. says,

  389. hey you,

  390. come follow me.

  391. And he calls

  392. his first disciples

  393. and they drop

  394. their nets on the beach

  395. and they left

  396. their taxation tables.

  397. to follow Jesus.

  398. He wasn't asking

  399. them to come

  400. with him

  401. on a gap year

  402. of travel

  403. around the Holy Land.

  404. It wasn't a

  405. three year sabbatical.

  406. It wasn't a gap year

  407. before you head off

  408. to university

  409. in Jerusalem

  410. and study

  411. a master's

  412. in shepherding

  413. or whatever it is

  414. they did back

  415. in those days.

  416. They signed

  417. up for Jesus

  418. to reign over

  419. the course

  420. of their lives.

  421. And we see

  422. that

  423. clearly

  424. with the disciples

  425. and we see it

  426. with the Apostle Paul

  427. who I want to

  428. take to now.

  429. So Acts 20

  430. which was just

  431. read out to us

  432. it's in your service

  433. sheet in front of you.

  434. In Acts 20

  435. the Apostle Paul

  436. gathers the Ephesian

  437. elders,

  438. the elders from the

  439. church at Ephesus

  440. together,

  441. have a chat with them.

  442. So these verses

  443. are first and foremost

  444. primarily directed

  445. to the leaders

  446. of the church

  447. but on the whole

  448. they're applicable

  449. to every disciple.

  450. And we see the

  451. importance of this

  452. chat when you look

  453. at verse 25

  454. where it says

  455. now I know

  456. that none of you

  457. among whom I have

  458. gone about preaching

  459. the kingdom

  460. will ever see me

  461. again.

  462. So this is Paul's

  463. if you like

  464. final

  465. final chat.

  466. This is the end

  467. of his missionary

  468. journeys in fact.

  469. And as with any

  470. final farewells

  471. it is the perfect

  472. opportunity to talk

  473. about what matters

  474. actually matter most.

  475. In 2010

  476. a dear friend of mine

  477. and Natalie's

  478. was near death.

  479. I went to visit her

  480. in hospital

  481. for the last time.

  482. I knew it was going

  483. to be the last time

  484. I knew she had

  485. literally hours

  486. if you know

  487. maybe days to live.

  488. when I went

  489. and visited her

  490. she was slipping

  491. in and out

  492. of consciousness

  493. and I had

  494. 10 to 15 minutes

  495. you know

  496. with her.

  497. We didn't talk

  498. about the weather.

  499. We didn't talk

  500. about house prices.

  501. We didn't talk

  502. what was on the

  503. front page

  504. of the City Morning

  505. Herald.

  506. We didn't talk

  507. trivia at all.

  508. It was straight

  509. down to business.

  510. I read the Bible

  511. to her.

  512. That was the most

  513. important thing

  514. or walked

  515. straight in

  516. said Yvonne

  517. love you

  518. let me open

  519. the Bible

  520. and read

  521. before you

  522. lose consciousness.

  523. Read the Bible

  524. with her.

  525. We talked

  526. about hope

  527. in Christ.

  528. We talked

  529. about the

  530. resurrection

  531. of the body

  532. and when

  533. the opportunity

  534. came I talked

  535. about what

  536. she meant

  537. to me

  538. and what

  539. she meant

  540. to my family

  541. and vice versa.

  542. We then

  543. very quickly

  544. planned her

  545. funeral

  546. and her

  547. instructions

  548. to me

  549. were very

  550. very clear.

  551. Put Christ

  552. on display.

  553. don't you

  554. dare tell

  555. people

  556. that I

  557. was a

  558. good

  559. person.

  560. I said

  561. no fear

  562. of that.

  563. She left

  564. me with

  565. some parting

  566. advice.

  567. We cried

  568. and kissed

  569. her,

  570. walked away

  571. never to

  572. see her

  573. again

  574. in this

  575. life.

  576. So

  577. this is

  578. this moment

  579. for Paul.

  580. What

  581. matters

  582. most to

  583. him

  584. is key.

  585. Now

  586. there is

  587. so much

  588. more that

  589. could be

  590. gleaned

  591. from this

  592. passage than

  593. what I'm

  594. going to

  595. look at

  596. tonight

  597. but I

  598. want to

  599. focus on

  600. something

  601. important.

  602. What

  603. Paul wants

  604. for these

  605. Ephesian

  606. elders

  607. is for

  608. them

  609. to

  610. emulate

  611. his

  612. life.

  613. That's

  614. what he

  615. says.

  616. I want

  617. you

  618. to

  619. emulate

  620. my

  621. God's

  622. mission

  623. shaped

  624. life.

  625. God's

  626. storyline

  627. shaped

  628. life.

  629. God's

  630. work in

  631. the

  632. world

  633. shaped

  634. life.

  635. I

  636. want

  637. you

  638. to

  639. emulate

  640. that.

  641. And

  642. it's

  643. not

  644. unusual

  645. because

  646. he

  647. said

  648. it

  649. before

  650. 1

  651. Corinthians

  652. 11

  653. 1

  654. he

  655. says

  656. follow

  657. me

  658. as

  659. I

  660. follow

  661. Christ.

  662. You

  663. want

  664. to

  665. know

  666. what

  667. it

  668. looks

  669. like

  670. to

  671. have

  672. your

  673. life

  674. captured

  675. by

  676. God's

  677. mission

  678. in

  679. the

  680. world

  681. then

  682. you

  683. look

  684. at

  685. me

  686. and

  687. you

  688. watch

  689. my

  690. life.

  691. In

  692. verse

  693. 24

  694. we

  695. see

  696. his

  697. vision

  698. for

  699. his

  700. life.

  701. This

  702. is

  703. what's

  704. happened

  705. to him

  706. ever

  707. since

  708. he

  709. met

  710. Jesus.

  711. I

  712. consider

  713. my

  714. life

  715. worth

  716. nothing

  717. to

  718. me

  719. if

  720. only

  721. I

  722. may

  723. finish

  724. the

  725. race

  726. and

  727. complete

  728. the

  729. task

  730. the

  731. Lord

  732. Jesus

  733. has

  734. given

  735. me.

  736. And

  737. what's

  738. the

  739. task?

  740. I

  741. might

  742. do

  743. the

  744. ministry

  745. that

  746. God

  747. has

  748. given

  749. me.

  750. What's

  751. this

  752. ministry?

  753. The

  754. task

  755. of

  756. testifying

  757. to

  758. the

  759. gospel

  760. of

  761. God's

  762. grace.

  763. That's

  764. the

  765. mission.

  766. My

  767. mission

  768. in

  769. life

  770. is

  771. to

  772. do

  773. God's

  774. mission

  775. in

  776. life.

  777. The

  778. gospel

  779. of

  780. God's

  781. grace

  782. is

  783. what

  784. turned

  785. Paul's

  786. life

  787. upside

  788. down

  789. and

  790. inside

  791. out.

  792. This

  793. is

  794. the

  795. guy

  796. who

  797. once

  798. described

  799. himself

  800. as

  801. the

  802. chief

  803. of

  804. sinners,

  805. a

  806. blasphemer,

  807. a

  808. persecutor

  809. of the

  810. Lord

  811. Jesus

  812. and

  813. his

  814. church.

  815. He

  816. consented

  817. to

  818. the

  819. murder

  820. and

  821. the

  822. beatings

  823. and

  824. the

  825. false

  826. imprisonments.

  827. Jesus

  828. rescued

  829. him

  830. from

  831. all of

  832. that

  833. miraculously,

  834. from all

  835. the guilt

  836. and the

  837. condemnation

  838. that went

  839. with that

  840. life of

  841. wickedness.

  842. He was

  843. forgiven.

  844. His debt

  845. was wiped

  846. clean.

  847. He was set

  848. free.

  849. He's made

  850. right with

  851. God.

  852. He's been

  853. gathered back

  854. into relationship

  855. with God.

  856. He's been

  857. given eternal

  858. life all

  859. by grace.

  860. God's

  861. favor rested

  862. on him.

  863. God's

  864. sin.

  865. How's

  866. that

  867. possible?

  868. Verse 28,

  869. the

  870. church

  871. of God

  872. which he

  873. bought

  874. with the

  875. blood

  876. of his

  877. own.

  878. The

  879. Lord

  880. Jesus

  881. shed

  882. his

  883. blood

  884. for the

  885. sins

  886. of the

  887. world.

  888. And

  889. it is

  890. the

  891. act

  892. that

  893. changes

  894. the

  895. course

  896. of

  897. history

  898. and

  899. that

  900. changed

  901. the

  902. course

  903. of

  904. Paul's

  905. life.

  906. Paul

  907. was

  908. included

  909. in

  910. God's

  911. mission

  912. of

  913. redemption.

  914. And

  915. being

  916. captured

  917. by

  918. God's

  919. mission

  920. he

  921. was

  922. able

  923. to

  924. say

  925. I

  926. consider

  927. my

  928. life

  929. worth

  930. nothing

  931. to

  932. me.

  933. If

  934. only

  935. I

  936. may

  937. finish

  938. the

  939. race

  940. and

  941. complete

  942. the

  943. task

  944. the

  945. Lord

  946. has

  947. given

  948. me.

  949. You

  950. see

  951. the

  952. pattern

  953. of

  954. Paul's

  955. life

  956. ever

  957. since

  958. becoming

  959. a

  960. Christian

  961. was

  962. commitment

  963. to

  964. Christ

  965. that

  966. superseded

  967. self

  968. interest.

  969. He

  970. had a

  971. job

  972. to

  973. do.

  974. He's

  975. preoccupied

  976. with

  977. something

  978. better

  979. than life

  980. itself

  981. in the

  982. Lord

  983. Jesus.

  984. He's

  985. not

  986. being

  987. reckless.

  988. He's

  989. not

  990. being

  991. irresponsible.

  992. He's

  993. not

  994. being

  995. suicidal

  996. when

  997. he

  998. says

  999. that

  1000. he

  1001. considers

  1002. his

  1003. life

  1004. worth

  1005. nothing.

  1006. He

  1007. is

  1008. simply

  1009. saying

  1010. that

  1011. Jesus

  1012. is

  1013. greater

  1014. than

  1015. my

  1016. career,

  1017. than

  1018. my

  1019. ministry,

  1020. than

  1021. my

  1022. success,

  1023. than

  1024. my

  1025. money,

  1026. my

  1027. possessions,

  1028. my

  1029. holidays,

  1030. my

  1031. children,

  1032. my

  1033. body,

  1034. my

  1035. significance,

  1036. my

  1037. fulfillment,

  1038. my

  1039. preservation,

  1040. my

  1041. life.

  1042. The

  1043. same

  1044. commitment

  1045. was

  1046. beautifully

  1047. evident

  1048. in the

  1049. life of

  1050. one

  1051. Iranian

  1052. pastor

  1053. who

  1054. was

  1055. imprisoned

  1056. on

  1057. charges

  1058. of

  1059. apostasy

  1060. in

  1061. 1984.

  1062. He

  1063. was

  1064. on

  1065. death

  1066. row

  1067. for

  1068. nine

  1069. years

  1070. before

  1071. he

  1072. finally

  1073. got

  1074. his

  1075. day

  1076. in

  1077. court.

  1078. On

  1079. the

  1080. 3rd

  1081. December

  1082. 1993

  1083. he

  1084. wrote

  1085. a

  1086. defense

  1087. to

  1088. the

  1089. Sari

  1090. Court

  1091. of

  1092. Justice

  1093. and

  1094. this

  1095. is

  1096. part

  1097. of

  1098. what

  1099. he

  1100. wrote.

  1101. He

  1102. summarized

  1103. his

  1104. life

  1105. with

  1106. these

  1107. words.

  1108. I'm

  1109. a

  1110. Christian.

  1111. As

  1112. a

  1113. sinner

  1114. I

  1115. believe

  1116. Jesus

  1117. has

  1118. died

  1119. for

  1120. my

  1121. sins

  1122. on

  1123. the

  1124. cross

  1125. and

  1126. by

  1127. his

  1128. resurrection

  1129. and

  1130. victory

  1131. over

  1132. death

  1133. has

  1134. made

  1135. me

  1136. righteous

  1137. in

  1138. the

  1139. presence

  1140. of

  1141. the

  1142. holy

  1143. God.

  1144. In

  1145. response

  1146. to

  1147. this

  1148. kindness

  1149. he

  1150. has

  1151. asked

  1152. me

  1153. to

  1154. deny

  1155. myself

  1156. and

  1157. be

  1158. his

  1159. fully

  1160. surrendered

  1161. follower

  1162. and

  1163. not

  1164. to

  1165. fear

  1166. people

  1167. even

  1168. if

  1169. they

  1170. should

  1171. kill

  1172. my

  1173. body.

  1174. Life

  1175. for

  1176. me

  1177. is

  1178. an

  1179. opportunity

  1180. to

  1181. serve

  1182. him

  1183. and

  1184. death

  1185. is

  1186. a

  1187. better

  1188. opportunity

  1189. to

  1190. be

  1191. with

  1192. Christ

  1193. therefore

  1194. I'm

  1195. not

  1196. only

  1197. satisfied

  1198. to be

  1199. in

  1200. prison

  1201. for

  1202. the

  1203. honor

  1204. of

  1205. his

  1206. holy

  1207. name

  1208. but

  1209. I'm

  1210. ready

  1211. to

  1212. give

  1213. my

  1214. life

  1215. for

  1216. the

  1217. sake

  1218. of

  1219. Jesus

  1220. my

  1221. Lord

  1222. and

  1223. enter

  1224. his

  1225. kingdom

  1226. sooner

  1227. the

  1228. place

  1229. where

  1230. the

  1231. elect

  1232. of

  1233. God

  1234. enter

  1235. everlasting

  1236. life.

  1237. Finally

  1238. the

  1239. charges

  1240. of

  1241. apostasy

  1242. were

  1243. removed

  1244. he

  1245. was

  1246. released

  1247. from

  1248. prison

  1249. in

  1250. 1994

  1251. but

  1252. what

  1253. was

  1254. not

  1255. removed

  1256. was

  1257. the

  1258. death

  1259. sentence.

  1260. Three

  1261. days

  1262. after being

  1263. released

  1264. from

  1265. prison

  1266. he

  1267. was

  1268. abducted

  1269. murdered

  1270. and

  1271. his

  1272. body

  1273. was

  1274. thrown

  1275. in

  1276. a

  1277. park.

  1278. See

  1279. Paul's

  1280. vision

  1281. shaped

  1282. life

  1283. is

  1284. on

  1285. full

  1286. display

  1287. he's

  1288. saying

  1289. by

  1290. my

  1291. life

  1292. I'm

  1293. showing

  1294. you

  1295. that

  1296. my

  1297. life

  1298. is

  1299. caught

  1300. up

  1301. in

  1302. God's

  1303. story

  1304. the

  1305. story

  1306. of

  1307. my

  1308. life

  1309. is

  1310. caught

  1311. up

  1312. in

  1313. God's

  1314. story

  1315. of

  1316. the

  1317. world

  1318. he

  1319. says

  1320. in

  1321. verse

  1322. 18

  1323. you

  1324. know

  1325. how

  1326. I

  1327. lived

  1328. the

  1329. whole

  1330. time

  1331. I

  1332. was

  1333. with

  1334. you

  1335. I

  1336. served

  1337. the

  1338. Lord

  1339. with

  1340. great

  1341. humility

  1342. and

  1343. with

  1344. tears

  1345. although

  1346. I

  1347. was

  1348. severely

  1349. tested

  1350. by

  1351. the

  1352. plots

  1353. of

  1354. the

  1355. Jews

  1356. and

  1357. then

  1358. down

  1359. in

  1360. verse

  1361. things

  1362. humility

  1363. humility

  1364. honesty

  1365. honesty

  1366. industry

  1367. hard

  1368. work

  1369. meeting

  1370. needs

  1371. generosity

  1372. characterized

  1373. his

  1374. life

  1375. and

  1376. verse

  1377. 20

  1378. is

  1379. the

  1380. work

  1381. that

  1382. he

  1383. especially

  1384. labored

  1385. hard

  1386. in

  1387. again

  1388. you

  1389. know

  1390. again

  1391. guys

  1392. look

  1393. at

  1394. me

  1395. you

  1396. know

  1397. that

  1398. I

  1399. have

  1400. not

  1401. hesitated

  1402. to

  1403. preach

  1404. anything

  1405. that

  1406. would

  1407. be

  1408. helpful

  1409. to

  1410. you

  1411. but

  1412. have

  1413. taught

  1414. you

  1415. publicly

1416. and from house to house, I have declared to both Jews and Greeks,

1417. in other words, everyone, that they must turn to God in repentance

1418. and have faith in our Lord Jesus.

  1419. And so Paul's mission-shaped life

1420. meant he discharged his duty to make the good news of God's grace

1421. in Jesus Christ be known to all.

1422. In fact, so thoroughly was his discharging of this duty

1423. that he says in verse 26,

1424. In other words, I have not failed to discharge that duty.

1425. See, in the gospel of the Lord Jesus, Paul discovered a greater treasure than himself.

1426. And it resulted in a gospel-shaped life,

1427. both in its authenticity and in its attention to focus

1428. on proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ

1429. from a heart of love and acts of service.

1430. And so, having said that, the apostle Paul left the Ephesian elders.

1431. He sailed off to keep giving his life to God's mission.

1432. He was arrested in Jerusalem, as he knew he would be.

1433. And by the providence of God, he ended up being transferred to Rome under God.

1434. He's like, he's gone to head office now.

1435. And the final two verses of the Acts of the Apostles says this.

1436. You know, like, now that he's arrested, has he lost his focus?

1437. Here's the final two verses.

1438. For two whole years, Paul stayed there in his own rented house

1439. and welcomed all who came to see him.

  1440. Boldly and without hindrance,

1441. he preached the kingdom of God

1442. and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.

1443. Right to the very end.

1444. Although he's bound by house arrest,

1445. what this is saying here is that the word of God wasn't.

1446. This servant of the gospel of the Lord Jesus

1447. will soon lose his life,

1448. but the gospel will keep on advancing to the ends of the earth.

  1449. Paul will be dead,

1450. but Jesus is still alive.

1451. And when we commit ourselves to the Lord Jesus and his gospel,

1452. we are committing to God's unstoppable, eternal purposes.

1453. The ripple effects of God's mission

1454. will only grow in magnitude for all of eternity.

1455. Who would have thought that 2,000 years later,

1456. we would be talking about the apostle Paul

1457. in a country that he never knew existed.

1458. You want impact for your life?

  1459. There's impact.

1460. You want to leave a legacy?

  1461. There's a legacy.

1462. In the past couple of weeks,

1463. you've potentially seen in the media

1464. about a young American missionary,

  1465. 26 years of age,

1466. went to North Centauri Islands

  1467. in the Indian Ocean

  1468. and was killed.

1469. Just nod your head if you've seen that.

1470. I have seen secular media just cane this guy.

1471. What an idiot throwing his life away like that.

1472. I've seen Christians saying exactly the same thing.

1473. What a waste of life.

  1474. Is it?

1475. We Christians have got a tendency to say the same thing

  1476. as the world.

1477. And we don't learn from history.

  1478. In the 1800s,

1479. two men went to a place called New Hebrides,

1480. which is now called Vanuatu.

1481. John Williams and James Harris.

  1482. First two missionaries

1483. out of the London Missionary Society

  1484. got on a boat,

1485. went to the New Hebrides,

  1486. walked on a beach,

1487. and within 10 minutes of walking on the beach,

1488. both of them were clubbed to death.

1489. They were cooked and eaten

1490. before the ship had pulled anchor and left.

1491. You go back to the church in Scotland

  1492. where they came from

  1493. and they said,

  1494. what a wasted life.

  1495. Two young men,

  1496. lives are gone.

  1497. What a wasted life.

  1498. Within 15 years,

1499. a man named John Patton said,

  1500. I'll be the next.

1501. John Patton goes down there

1502. and the church in Scotland said,

  1503. don't do it,

  1504. don't do it,

  1505. they'll eat you.

1506. Patton walked onto the beach

1507. and after 30 odd years of ministry,

1508. the whole island of Inewa

  1509. was converted.

  1510. And today,

  1511. 60% of Vanuatu

1512. declares itself to be Christian.

  1513. And John Patton says,

1514. the way was opened by God

1515. through the blood of two men.

  1516. And I've just mentioned

  1517. John Williams

  1518. and James Harris

1519. who are still known in the history books,

1520. who still leave a lasting legacy

1521. even though their lives were cut short.

1522. Who knows what God is going to do

1523. in the North Sentinelese Islands

1524. as he by his Holy Spirit

  1525. could convict people

1526. for the atrocity they've committed

  1527. against another human being.

  1528. We don't know.

1529. And the only reason you would say

  1530. that life's a wasted life

1531. is because you've been captured

  1532. by a different story.

  1533. See, God's story,

1534. his mission in the world

1535. is what I've just said.

  1536. But there's another story

  1537. that's arisen

1538. in the last couple of hundred years

1539. and it's taken up residence

1540. in the soul of the Western world.

  1541. And it's becoming

  1542. more and more dominant

1543. and it's very dominant now.

1544. It's become the purpose of life

1545. for much of the Western world

1546. and the technical term for it

  1547. is philosophical naturalism.

  1548. That's a fancy name

  1549. for materialism.

  1550. And it's worth comparing

1551. the story of philosophical naturalism

1552. which is in our lifeblood

  1553. in this society

  1554. to God's story.

  1555. This is a three-chapter story.

  1556. Philosophical naturalism,

  1557. materialism is a three-chapter story.

  1558. It goes like this.

  1559. Big bang, evolution, nothing.

  1560. In the big bang,

  1561. there's no supernatural

  1562. or spiritual power.

  1563. There's no creator.

  1564. There's nothing that rules

  1565. the physical universe.

1566. Everything that can be seen

  1567. and measured

  1568. is a,

1569. which is the only thing that exists,

1570. only things that can be seen

  1571. and measured

1572. is a result of an explosion

1573. that appeared out of nothing

  1574. billions of years ago.

  1575. That's chapter one.

  1576. Random.

  1577. Boom.

  1578. Boom.

  1579. Chapter two.

  1580. Is that this earth,

1581. which is a result of that boom,

1582. is in exactly the right place,

  1583. revolving around the sun

1584. at exactly the right speed

1585. in order for life to evolve.

  1586. Against all the odds,

  1587. humanity has evolved

  1588. from prehistoric soup

1589. to be the dominant species

  1590. on the earth

  1591. for the time being.

1592. And despite what people might think,

1593. despite what they might feel,

1594. there is no such thing

1595. as absolute right or wrong.

1596. If you happen to feel

1597. that there is an absolute right or wrong,

  1598. it's because there's a chemical reaction

  1599. in your brain

1600. as a result of evolution.

1601. But you've just got to ignore that

1602. because it's just not true.

1603. Because everything is an accident

  1604. and it's random,

1605. then there is no absolute purpose in life.

1606. You can create purpose for life.

1607. You can create your own purpose

  1608. if you want to,

  1609. but that's something

  1610. that you have created

  1611. as a finite being.

  1612. And that's what you'd need

1613. in order to exist in life,

  1614. then that's fine,

  1615. but it's not real.

  1616. And so,

1617. that means that this life

  1618. is all you have,

1619. make the most of it,

1620. and the goal of this life

1621. is for you to be as happy

1622. as you possibly can be.

1623. And to be as happy

1624. as you possibly can be,

  1625. you must consume experiences

  1626. and accumulate things.

1627. And the reason you must do that

1628. is because chapter three is there.

1629. And it could happen at any time.

1630. The sun is just going to burn up.

1631. We're going to slip our axis

1632. and spin off into the Netherlands.

  1633. Humanity will become extinct.

1634. There's no form of afterlife.

1635. There's no survival of the conscience.

  1636. The story of materialism

1637. is that this life is it.

  1638. Which is why when a 26-year-old

  1639. throws his life away,

  1640. we go,

  1641. what an idiot.

1642. We call that a wasted life.

  1643. Where materialism says

  1644. everything is random,

1645. there's no good or evil,

1646. there's nothing to hope for,

  1647. the biblical storyline

1648. is that we have a loving creator

1649. who has triumphed over evil

1650. at great cost to himself

  1651. to love you dearly.

1652. And we look forward to a day

  1653. when everything that's wrong

1654. is going to be made right.

1655. And we will live with him

  1656. in blissful joy

  1657. for all of eternity.

1658. I've got to tell you,

  1659. the biblical storyline

1660. just seems so much more compelling.

1661. And it's not just compelling.

1662. If you're not convinced by it,

  1663. it is true

1664. and I can show you how it's true.

  1665. I can tell you

1666. that it is more reasonable

  1667. than every other

  1668. of the grand narratives

  1669. that are out there.

  1670. And if you're not a Christian,

1671. I'd invite you to jump on board

  1672. with this

  1673. and start investigating

  1674. the claims of Jesus

  1675. and his worldview today.

  1676. But here's the thing.

  1677. Philosophical naturalism

  1678. or God's biblical storyline,

  1679. whichever one you choose,

  1680. it will require

  1681. demand of you,

  1682. your time,

  1683. your talents,

  1684. and your treasures.

  1685. Whichever one you serve,

  1686. you're serving it.

1687. And that's why I'm calling you today

  1688. to serve the biblical.

  1689. Don't keep a foot

  1690. in both worlds.

  1691. I'm calling you

  1692. to jump on board

  1693. with God's storyline.

  1694. One of the things

  1695. we're doing practically tonight

  1696. is pledging.

1697. We do this every year.

  1698. One of the things

  1699. that I do

  1700. is I declare

  1701. what Natalie and I

  1702. and the kids

  1703. are giving

  1704. to this mission

  1705. in this church.

  1706. And staff

  1707. and parish council

  1708. follow me.

  1709. I get this from

  1710. 1 Chronicles 29.

  1711. I've written about this

  1712. a number of times.

  1713. Staff and parish council

  1714. follow me

  1715. and then I invite

  1716. the rest of you

  1717. to follow.

  1718. For next year,

  1719. Natalie and I

  1720. are giving

  1721. $350 a week

  1722. to God's mission

  1723. in St. Paul's.

  1724. Our giving to poor

  1725. and mission

1726. is on top of that.

  1727. Staff and parish council

  1728. have in this week

  1729. followed suit

  1730. and they have pledged

  1731. $3,823 per week

  1732. between them.

  1733. That's 40%,

  1734. almost 40%

  1735. of our target

  1736. that we're hoping

  1737. to reach

  1738. just from staff

  1739. and parish council.

  1740. They've also contributed

  1741. $16,170

  1742. to our 50,000

  1743. project

  1744. for our local

  1745. mission project

1746. for our next gen ministries.

  1747. That's 30%

  1748. that's been raised

  1749. from parish council

  1750. and staff

  1751. and they have

  1752. contributed

  1753. $2,450

  1754. towards the

  1755. Ropes Crossing

  1756. Global Mission Project.

  1757. Staff and parish council

  1758. have put 50%

  1759. towards that one

  1760. already.

  1761. What I'm calling you

  1762. to do

1763. is to play your part

  1764. in God's mission

  1765. and to do it

  1766. on purpose here.

  1767. God's mission

  1768. is to overthrow

  1769. Satan

  1770. gathering people

  1771. to himself

  1772. through the Lord Jesus

  1773. so that they

  1774. might live forever

  1775. in his presence

  1776. as his much-loved

  1777. children.

  1778. God's plan

  1779. is to gather

  1780. children to himself

1781. to be in the likeness

  1782. of his true son

  1783. the Lord Jesus

  1784. remember he tribe,

  1785. language, nation

  1786. and people.

  1787. How do you purposely

  1788. play your part

  1789. in God's mission

  1790. in this world?

  1791. Very simply

  1792. by surrendering

  1793. your time,

  1794. your talents

  1795. and your treasures

1796. to the cause of Christ

  1797. in such a way

  1798. that it makes

  1799. Jesus look magnificent.

  1800. It makes your life

  1801. look like

1802. it is out of step

  1803. with philosophical

  1804. naturalism.

1805. We don't live for that.

  1806. We live for this.

  1807. And it means

  1808. things like

  1809. as we pull in

  1810. the whole series

  1811. together,

1812. we grow up in the

  1813. character of the Lord

  1814. Jesus so that

  1815. our motive to see

  1816. God glorified

  1817. is love

  1818. and our actions

  1819. are service of others.

  1820. We pray that God

  1821. will open the eyes

  1822. and transform hearts

  1823. that people might see

  1824. the beauty

  1825. and the glory

  1826. and the worth

  1827. of Christ.

  1828. We proclaim

  1829. the good news

  1830. that Jesus died

  1831. for sins.

  1832. He's risen triumphant

  1833. over all evil

  1834. and reign supreme

  1835. as Lord of all.

1836. And we do it together

  1837. as his people.

1838. We do it by supporting

1839. what God has been doing

  1840. and is doing

  1841. at the moment

  1842. around the world.

  1843. We do it

  1844. wherever God

  1845. has placed us

  1846. as his ambassadors

  1847. in societies.

  1848. We heard from

  1849. Coe earlier

  1850. about being at school.

1851. I want to ask you

  1852. as we come

  1853. to the end

  1854. of this series,

  1855. how have you been

  1856. going with your

  1857. My Purpose

  1858. Health Checkup?

1859. What is the next step?

  1860. Don't just sit here

  1861. and absorb

  1862. and absorb

  1863. and absorb

  1864. but don't do anything.

1865. What is the next step

  1866. you need to take?

  1867. I plead with you

  1868. not just sit

  1869. comfortable.

  1870. Is it a crawl?

  1871. Is it a walk?

  1872. Is it a run?

1873. Do you need to take

  1874. the first step

  1875. in fact

  1876. and start following

  1877. Jesus tonight?

  1878. Do you need to

  1879. increase the regularity

1880. that you have at church?

1881. Do you need to prepare

  1882. your heart

  1883. for corporate worship

  1884. so that you don't

  1885. just turn up

  1886. when the music starts

  1887. but you're actually

  1888. ready to engage

  1889. to sing,

  1890. to pray,

  1891. to listen to God,

  1892. to engage with others?

  1893. Do you need to

  1894. join a community group?

  1895. Do it.

1896. Sign up at the table

  1897. tonight.

  1898. Do you need to

  1899. start serving

1900. and join a ministry team?

1901. Sign up at the table

  1902. tonight.

  1903. Do you need to

  1904. take further steps

  1905. towards radical

  1906. generosity with your

  1907. resources?

  1908. Do that tonight.

  1909. Do you need to

  1910. start praying for

  1911. someone to know

  1912. the truth and for

  1913. opportunities for you

  1914. to speak the truth?

  1915. Do you need,

  1916. first of all,

  1917. just to learn what

  1918. the truth is and

1919. how to speak it well?

  1920. What is the next

  1921. step?

  1922. That your life

  1923. might be on

  1924. purpose,

  1925. aligned

  1926. to God's

  1927. purpose,

  1928. to God's

  1929. story?

  1930. What do you

  1931. need to do

  1932. to take the

  1933. next step

  1934. to jump into

  1935. God's storyline

  1936. and find

  1937. real impact,

  1938. real legacy?
