  1. In about two weeks will be Christmas.

  2. Do you have any tradition during this festive season?

  3. Are you looking forward to have some time off?

  4. Or are you one of those that have to work through the holiday

  5. and only have a few red days for a break?

  6. Another father of my kids, who is an Italian,

  7. he told me that his German father-in-law

  8. would often visit them during Christmas.

  9. They did not get on very well

  10. because he feels that his father-in-law is too strict.

  11. Everything needs to be right and exact,

  12. needs to be on the dock, so to speak.

  13. So to make his Christmas family gathering

  14. more bearable and entertaining,

  15. my friend would deliberately adjust all the clocks in his house

  16. to be out by one or two minutes

  17. and observe the reaction and expression of his father-in-law.

  18. My friend said his father-in-law would want to do something

  19. to adjust all the clocks back to the exact time,

  20. but since it's not his house,

  21. he cannot do so without asking him for permission.

  22. But being a German father-in-law,

  23. he's not willing to ask an Italian for his permission.

  24. So he just spent the whole time being disturbed.

  25. When you wanted things to go your way,

  26. when you wanted to take control,

  27. but the environment does not allow you to do so,

  28. it must be a very painful experience.

  29. What if you are allowed to take control?

  30. What if you have the full reign?

  31. What would you do with it?

  32. What would you do to make sure you would not lose that control again?

  33. Today we will reflect on King Herod,

  34. a man who also wants everything to go according to how he wants them,

  35. and consider having control as the most important thing.

  36. Today we will see Christmas through his eyes,

  37. and as we prepare for the lead-up to Christmas Day,

  38. we will also take some time to see Christmas through the eyes of the angels,

  39. of Mary, and of Jesus' fathers.

  40. As we reflect on King Herod today,

  41. let us answer three questions.

  42. Who is Herod?

  43. Who is this newborn king?

  44. And who is your king?

  45. Let us pray.

  46. Father, thank you for Jesus.

  47. Thank you for breaking into our world a little bit more than 2,000 years ago,

  48. and provide us with a way to be reunited with you.

  49. As we reflect on the meaning of Christmas through King Herod today

  50. and other characters in the coming weeks,

  51. please help us to also reflect on the true meaning of Christmas to ourselves

  52. and what you have done for us.

  53. Amen.

  54. So who is King Herod?

  55. The birth of Christ, Christmas, was predicted in the Old Testament

  56. and recorded in Matthew and Luke in the New Testament.

  57. The record in Matthew was read out for us just now.

  58. So let's turn to it again in Matthew 2.

  59. It's saying in Matthew 2, verse 1 to 2,

    Matthew 2:1–2

  60. Jesus was born during the time of King Herod.

  61. You will encounter three different Herod.

  62. They are all related,

  63. and today we are talking about Herod the Great,

  64. the very first Herod who made it to be a king

  65. and passed on the position to the other Herod

  66. that you will read in the New Testament.

  67. The Bible has not given us much detail

  68. about the background about this Herod,

  69. but we can rely on historians

  70. and from the time and also archaeology

  71. to know more about him.

  72. Historians told us that Herod the Great

  73. was born an Edomite,

  74. followed the lines of Isaac,

  75. Isaac's oldest son, Esau.

  76. In Genesis, the first book of Old Testament,

  77. we were told that Isaac is the son of Abraham,

  78. and he has two sons, Esau and Jacob.

  79. So those who follow the line of Esau

  80. are Edomite because they live around Edom.

  81. And those who follow the line of Jacob are the Jews,

  82. which live in the land of Judea and Jerusalem.

  83. Herod shared the same ancestors with the Jews,

  84. going back to Abraham and Isaac,

  85. but he is not a Jew.

  86. He is a descendant of Esau and Edomite.

  87. He obtained his position as the king of the Jews,

  88. his relatives,

  89. not by birth,

  90. but through careful political maneuvers,

  91. risking his life at every step

  92. in his dealing with the Romans.

  93. Despite the fact that he was appointed king by the Romans

  94. and was bound to carry out the will of Rome,

  95. Herod wants to set up something great

  96. and pass on his achievements and inheritance to his children.

  97. He wants an empire that will last a long time.

  98. However, at the same time,

  99. he wants only to pass on his empire

  100. at the time that he feels,

  101. that is,

  102. feeding his schedule and his plan.

  103. So he murdered whoever might challenge his place on the throne,

  104. including his wife

  105. and several of his sons and other relatives.

  106. Reflecting on Herod,

  107. wanting to control the destiny of his own life,

  108. I thought about someone that was in China

  109. around 247 BC.

  110. He became the emperor of the Qing dynasty.

  111. His title was Qin Qi Wang.

  112. Qin is the name of the dynasty.

  113. Qi is the very first of the founder.

  114. Wang means emperor.

  115. So Qin Qi Wang means the very first emperor of China.

  116. He was called by that title

  117. because he was the very first emperor of a unified China.

  118. All the dynasty that come after him

  119. inherited unified China

  120. and able to expand China

  121. based on what Qin Qi Wang has done.

  122. He did a lot of things

  123. that we still talk about today,

  124. such as connecting all the sessions

  125. of the defensive war around the 200 BC,

  126. which become the Great War of China.

  127. And 2,200 years later,

  128. we still talk about it

  129. and the Great War is still standing

  130. as one of the wonders of the world.

  131. He was on a quest to find medicine

  132. that can grant him eternal life.

  133. But after all the attempts at Pharaoh,

  134. he had a few big tombs dug out

  135. and filled them with clay or terracotta warriors,

  136. horses and chariots,

  137. in order that they would give him the protection

  138. and extend his reign after death.

  139. Something that both Herod and Qin Qi Wang

  140. had in common

  141. are the great building projects.

  142. Qin Qi Wang connected the Great War

  143. and built tombs.

  144. Herod was known to have built

  145. the port of Caesarea,

  146. restored the temple in Jerusalem,

  147. and built many theaters, cities,

  148. palaces, and fortresses.

  149. They both done so much

  150. to set up for themselves a legacy

  151. that they hoped will last for a long time.

  152. They both want to be in control.

  153. But as you and me both know,

  154. things in life never go according to plan.

  155. Have you ever planned to achieve

  156. some great things,

  157. make accurate effort,

  158. with huge sacrifice to get there,

  159. and have the pin pulled from under you?

  160. You walk carefully,

  161. like treading on thin ice,

  162. and someone jumped in

  163. and cracked everything.

  164. The question posed by the Magi in verse 2,

  165. where is the one who has been born

  166. king of the Jews,

  167. was such a stern reminder to Herod

  168. that despite all that he has done,

  169. all that he is doing,

  170. despite all that he has achieved,

  171. he is not really the king of the Jews.

  172. He is not even born a Jew.

  173. He is the half-blooded king,

  174. if I may steal the title

  175. from a Harry Potter fan.

  176. So 1st Street told us that

  177. when King Herod heard this,

  178. he was disturbed,

  179. and all Jerusalem with him.

  180. This could be one of the understatements

  181. in the Bible.

  182. It's like saying Jesus was hungry

  183. after fast for 40 days and 40 nights.

  184. If you put yourself in Herod's shoes,

  185. disturbed seems to be not very accurate

  186. or sufficient to describe how I would feel

  187. responding to that news.

  188. A new king that is not under my control has born,

  189. and has a right to be the king of the empire

  190. that I am building by birth.

  191. And he has that right by birth.

  192. Being disturbed is such an understatement.

  193. And I believe all Jerusalem was disturbed too

  194. because they know what kind of person Herod is,

  195. what he will do to eliminate any threat to his thong.

  196. Herod was disturbed about the news of someone

  197. who may threaten his thong,

  198. and he may also be disturbed

  199. because he doesn't know where he is born.

  200. So in verse 4 to 5,

  201. he called together all the people's chief priests

  202. and teachers of the law

  203. to find out where the Messiah was to be born.

  204. It's interesting that Herod seems to know

  205. of the coming of the Messiah,

  206. who is the rightful king of the Jews,

  207. but he had done everything

  208. as if this Messiah would never come,

  209. that he can keep controlling

  210. as a half-blooded king,

  211. a pretender to the thong.

  212. When they worked out

  213. where about the newborn king should be,

  214. in verse 7 to 8, it read,

  215. Herod called the Magi secretly

  216. and found out from them

  217. the exact time the stars have appeared.

  218. He sent them to Bethlehem and said,

  219. Go and search carefully for the child.

  220. As soon as you find him,

  221. report to me,

  222. so I too may go and worship him.

  223. With what we just found out about Herod,

  224. it's so obvious that he's not going to go

  225. and worship the child Jesus.

  226. If you are Herod,

  227. what do you think are the justifiable actions

  228. to take towards this newborn king of the Jews?

  229. This new threat to what you want to establish

  230. for yourself and your family?

  231. How far would you go

  232. to protect what you have worked hard to set up

  233. before your life?

  234. Verse 16 told us that

  235. when Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi,

  236. he was furious

  237. and he gave order to kill all the boys in Bethlehem

  238. and his vicinity

  239. who were two years old and under,

  240. according to the time he had learned from the Magi.

  241. Herod killed all the boys in Bethlehem

  242. and his vicinity

  243. who were two years old and under

  244. to protect his control

  245. and lordship of the empire he is building.

  246. To him,

  247. there is a justifiable action to take.

  248. He had dealt with any threat to his throne

  249. in the same way all along,

  250. even to kill his wife and murder his sons.

  251. He wanted to hold on to whatever control he can exercise

  252. to ensure his plans of building his empire.

  253. Succeeds.

  254. In Chen Qi Wong,

  255. quest to ensure his dynasty and Jews forever

  256. and to decide who remind his sons

  257. are more suitable to carry on his legacy.

  258. He let his sons fight each other.

  259. In his quest for eternal life,

  260. he become very suspicious

  261. and his heart-like control of his dynasty

  262. drew many opposition.

  263. In response to Chen Qi Wong,

  264. he burned all the books and literature

  265. that is not in line with the policy

  266. that he wants to enforce

  267. and murder any scholar

  268. that dare to speak up against him

  269. by burying them alive

  270. to drown them out.

  271. The forced labor he put in place

  272. to connect up the Great Wall

  273. caused many men to be separated from their family.

  274. Husbands are taken away from their wife.

  275. Children become fatherless.

  276. One of the famous Chinese folk stories says that

  277. a wife so desperate to find her husband,

  278. she searched along the Great Wall every day

  279. and weeping and crying,

  280. and her cry cracked the wall.

  281. We read today

  282. the weeping and great mourning

  283. that was predicted,

  284. mentioned in verse 18,

  285. of those who had lost their children

  286. in Bethlehem and its vicinity

  287. is not the greatest concern of Herod.

  288. They were just one of his necessary casualties.

  289. Have you met someone

  290. or known of anyone like Herod?

  291. Someone who is so determined

  292. to achieve what they have set up to do

  293. or to protect their ownership

  294. of things that they want to hold on to.

  295. They are willing to sacrifice others to get there.

  296. Verse 19 told us that

  297. are universal threats

  298. that everyone needs to face.

  299. No matter how hard you try,

  300. no matter how powerful you become,

  301. Chen Chi Wang tried and failed.

  302. Same goes to Herod and all of us.

  303. They say Herod died.

  304. We all have to face the fact

  305. that we will be dead one day.

  306. Herod died searching

  307. for the newborn king

  308. for the wrong reason.

  309. He wants to find him to kill him.

  310. You can live life,

  311. you can live life like a king

  312. in your life now,

  313. but without meeting a true king,

  314. you will only die disturbed

  315. and searching like Herod.

  316. Herod questioned the people's chief priests

  317. and teachers of the law

  318. so that he knows of the Messiah,

  319. but he did not really know who he is

  320. and where to find him.

  321. When he found out where to find him,

  322. when the opportunity presented for him

  323. to meet the Messiah,

  324. he was too busy building his empire.

  325. He rejected and ignored the chance

  326. for him to meet the one

  327. that can give him eternal life,

  328. the one that can ensure his achievement

  329. that really lasts to eternity.

  330. Instead of taking up the opportunity

  331. to meet the real king of his life,

  332. he killed off the only chance

  333. he could have to meet the Messiah.

  334. So who is this newborn king?

  335. Who is this Messiah?

  336. Let's now look at this second question,

  337. who is this newborn king,

  338. by going back to verse 5.

  339. Verse 5 told us that the Messiah

  340. was to be born in Bethlehem in Judea.

  341. And for this is what the prophet was written.

  342. If we read on in verse 6,

  343. But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

  344. are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.

  345. For all of you will become a ruler

  346. who will shepherd my people Israel.

  347. Messiah is a special Hebrew term in the Bible.

  348. In Greek, it is Christ.

  349. Both means the anointed one, the king.

  350. Judea or the land of Judah is today

  351. what we call Palestine.

  352. And Bethlehem, this city,

  353. the name of that city actually means house of bread.

  354. So this is where the bread of life,

  355. referred to in John 6, 48, come to earth.

  356. From this city to town,

  357. a ruler will come to shepherd God's people.

  358. If you turn back with me to Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  359. in verse 1 to 18,

  360. it says,

  361. this is how the birth of Christ,

  362. Jesus, the Messiah, come about.

  363. Jesus is the Messiah,

  364. a ruler who shepherds God's people.

  365. So what do you think of when you hear the term ruler?

  366. Do you think of someone high above you,

  367. very distant,

  368. a privilege with absolute power,

  369. something like Queen Elizabeth of England,

  370. or Donald Trump,

  371. or President Kim of the North Korea?

  372. Jesus is not that kind of ruler.

  373. Reading on in Matthew 1,

    Matthew 1:20–21

  374. verse 20 to 21,

  375. when an angel appeared to Joseph

  376. to encourage him about the son he is going to have,

  377. he said,

  378. Joseph, son of David,

  379. you are to give him the name Jesus

  380. because he will save his people from their sins.

  381. When Jesus was born,

  382. the Old Testament had already been translated

  383. from Hebrew to Greek,

  384. and Greek is a common language at the time.

  385. Theologian Warren Wisby said that

  386. the name Jesus means Savior

  387. and comes from the Hebrew's name Joshua,

  388. which also means Savior saves.

  389. Another theologian, Michael Horton, said,

  390. although the origin of the name Jesus

  391. is not very certain,

  392. the consensus is that

  393. it derives from the root to save.

  394. Jesus' name is descriptive

  395. of his relationship to his people

  396. in faithfulness and mercy.

  397. His mission is already embedded

  398. in his personal identity.

  399. Jesus is the Messiah,

  400. the king who will save his people

  401. from their sins.

  402. Jesus is a king

  403. that was not born

  404. into a life of privilege

  405. or political power.

  406. When he was born,

  407. his own race

  408. was under the authority of Rome.

  409. His birthplace

  410. was a place of occupied land

  411. governed by Herod,

  412. a pretender

  413. half-blooded king.

  414. And in verse 22-23,

  415. all this took place

  416. to fulfill what the Lord

  417. had said

  418. through the prophet.

  419. The virgin will conceive

  420. and give birth to a son

  421. and they will call him Emmanuel,

  422. which means

  423. God with us.

  424. So Jesus is God with us

  425. to save us.

  426. Have you ever looked at Jesus

  427. from that perspective?

  428. Jesus is God

  429. and he comes

  430. to be with us

  431. to save us.

  432. Who is Jesus to you?

  433. Reading on from Matthew 2,

    Matthew 2:13

  434. verse 13,

  435. When they, the Magi,

  436. have gone,

  437. an angel of the Lord

  438. appealed to Joseph

  439. in a dream.

  440. Get up, he said.

  441. Take the child

  442. and his mother

  443. and escape to Egypt.

  444. Stay there

  445. until I tell you,

  446. for Herod is going

  447. to search for the child

  448. to kill him.

  449. So he got up,

  450. took the child

  451. and his mother

  452. during the night

  453. and left for Egypt,

  454. where he stayed

  455. until the death of Herod.

  456. And so was fulfilled

  457. with the Lord,

  458. what the Lord

  459. has said

  460. through the prophet,

  461. Out of Egypt

  462. I call my son.

  463. Jesus is about

  464. to save us

  465. because,

  466. sorry,

  467. Jesus is able

  468. to save us

  469. because he is

  470. 100% human,

  471. born of Mary,

  472. and he is also

  473. 100% God.

  474. He is God

  475. the Son.

  476. It's not just

  477. another character

  478. of a story

  479. that was told

  480. once upon a time.

  481. Because Jesus

  482. is truly human

  483. and truly God,

  484. he can save us

  485. from our sins

  486. by being our substitution

  487. to pay the penalty

  488. of our sins.

  489. He knows

  490. what it means

  491. to be displaced

  492. because he had

  493. to spend his childhood

  494. in a foreign country

  495. with his family

  496. to preserve his life

  497. for the right moment

  498. to fulfill

  499. the ultimate substitution

  500. on the cross.

  501. He breaks through

  502. all stereotypes

  503. of what we think

  504. a king is.

  505. He breaches

  506. the gap

  507. of all cultures

  508. to bring salvation

  509. to everyone.

  510. Jesus was born

  511. king of the Jews

  512. who lived in a life

  513. in a time

  514. under cultural influence

  515. of the Greek

  516. and the political influence

  517. of Romans

  518. and spent his childhood

  519. in Egypt.

  520. Is this the Jesus

  521. that you know?

  522. And in verse 19 to 23,

  523. when those who were trying

  524. to take the child's life

  525. are dead,

  526. his whole family

  527. withdrew to the district

  528. of Galilee

  529. and he went and lived

  530. in a town called Nazareth.

  531. So it was fulfilled

  532. what was said

  533. through the prophet

  534. that he would be called

  535. an Assyrian.

  536. Jesus' life

  537. from birth to death

  538. was predicted

  539. by himself

  540. through the prophet.

  541. Every step of Jesus' life

  542. was lived out

  543. as fulfillment

  544. to what he said

  545. in the Old Testament.

  546. In the first two chapters

  547. of Matthew,

  548. we have only looked

  549. at the first few years

  550. of Jesus' life.

  551. The faith

  552. fulfilled what the Lord

  553. has said

  554. through the prophet

  555. already appeared

  556. about six times.

  557. The Old Testament

  558. of the Bible

  559. is God's redemptive plan

  560. being told

  561. and the New Testament

  562. is a fulfillment

  563. of that plan

  564. through the life,

  565. death,

  566. and resurrection

  567. of Jesus.

  568. The birth of Christ,

  569. Christmas,

  570. is the beginning

  571. of the unfolding

  572. of God's grace-saving act

  573. of mercy towards us.

  574. Jesus is not

  575. a king that born

  576. and grew up

  577. in a palace

  578. with privilege

  579. that does not know

  580. his people.

  581. Jesus was born

  582. and grew up

  583. in a humbly circumstance

  584. in an occupied land

  585. as an exile.

  586. The newborn king

  587. is Jesus,

  588. the Messiah,

  589. the one who saved us

  590. from our sins

  591. because he is

  592. the only one

  593. that had lived

  594. a perfect obedience

  595. life according

  596. to every letters

  597. of God's word.

  598. No human

  599. is able to do so

  600. because we do not

  601. have the nature

  602. of God.

  603. The Son of God,

  604. Jesus,

  605. who is God,

  606. the Son,

  607. had died

  608. and resurrected

  609. to make way

  610. for us

  611. to be united

  612. with God.

  613. Is that the Jesus

  614. that you know?

  615. Have you been

  616. seeing Jesus

  617. from that perspective?

  618. Do you honor Jesus

  619. as a king

  620. as he deserves

  621. to be honored?

  622. Have you let Jesus

  623. take control

  624. of your life

  625. as a king

  626. that he should?

  627. We have looked at

  628. who Herod is

  629. and who is

  630. this newborn king.

  631. Now let's look

  632. at the last question

  633. that I want us

  634. to reflect on today.

  635. Who is your king?

  636. With Christmas

  637. just only a couple

  638. of weeks away,

  639. what has been

  640. occupying you

  641. and your mind?

  642. Is it about

  643. how many days

  644. you will have

  645. for holiday?

  646. What you can do

  647. and where you can go?

  648. Is it about

  649. how you are going

  650. to fit all the gatherings

  651. of works and families

  652. in between those days?

  653. Is it about

  654. how to make

  655. those gatherings

  656. more bearable

  657. like my friend

  658. did to his German

  659. family-in-law?

  660. Is it about

  661. what kind of gifts

  662. you should get

  663. for your friends

  664. or what kind of gifts

  665. you are hoping to get?

  666. During the very first Christmas,

  667. the Magi was very busy.

  668. They were busy

  669. looking for the child Jesus.

  670. They found him

  671. by the help of God.

  672. Let's read

  673. from chapter 2,

  674. verse 9.

  675. It said,

  676. After they had heard

  677. the king,

  678. they went on their way

  679. and the stars

  680. they had seen

  681. when it rose

  682. went ahead of them

  683. until it stopped

  684. over the place

  685. where the child was.

  686. When they saw the star,

  687. they were overjoyed.

  688. On coming to the house,

  689. they saw the child

  690. with his mother Mary.

  691. They bowed down

  692. and worshipped him.

  693. Then they opened

  694. their treasures

  695. and presented him

  696. with gifts of gold,

  697. Frankenstein's and myrrh.

  698. The star sent by God

  699. led the Magi

  700. to the child king.

  701. And when the Magi

  702. see the newborn king

  703. of the Jews,

  704. they were overjoyed

  705. and they came

  706. fully prepared

  707. to see him.

  708. They were ready

  709. to bow down

  710. and worship him

  711. as king,

  712. offer up their treasure

  713. and present Jesus

  714. with gifts.

  715. They treat Jesus

  716. as their king

  717. even though

  718. they are not Jews.

  719. They were well-educated

  720. wise men

  721. willing to travel

  722. a long distance

  723. to submit themselves

  724. to the newborn king

  725. of the Jews.

  726. Are you ready

  727. to face Jesus?

  728. Are you ready

  729. to face your king?

  730. What gifts

  731. have you prepared

  732. to offer to him?

  733. What treasure

  734. have you bought

  735. for him?

  736. Have you ever

  737. prepared something

  738. as a gift

  739. and to find out

  740. that it's not suitable

  741. or not exactly

  742. what the other person

  743. would like to have?

  744. What did you do

  745. to avoid

  746. that embarrassment

  747. and headache again?

  748. I think the best way

  749. is to get to know

  750. the other person

  751. very well

  752. and even ask them

  753. directly.

  754. So do you know

  755. your king?

  756. Do you know

  757. where to find him?

  758. King Herod

  759. was cruelest

  760. of Jesus'

  761. whereabouts

  762. and what

  763. did he do?

  764. He asked someone

  765. that should know.

  766. If you're not sure

  767. where to find Jesus

  768. and who Jesus is,

  769. the Bible

  770. and someone

  771. who knows the Bible

  772. is the best place

  773. for you to start.

  774. So please speak

  775. with anyone

  776. in the red vest

  777. or write your question

  778. about Jesus

  779. in the card

  780. in front of you

  781. and we will contact you

  782. to help you

  783. look for Jesus.

  784. So in that way,

  785. as you search for Jesus,

  786. you'll be able to find out

  787. what he wants from you.

  788. So when you find him,

  789. you're ready to bow down

  790. and worship him

  791. and offer up

  792. your treasured gifts.

  793. We should learn

  794. from Herod

  795. asking other to help

  796. to learn about

  797. where Jesus is

  798. and what we should learn

  799. and we also should learn

  800. from the Magi

  801. putting in the action

  802. to find the real king.

  803. Herod was given

  804. a chance

  805. to meet the real king

  806. of the Jews

  807. but instead of going

  808. to meet him,

  809. he sent someone

  810. to do it.

  811. Even the religious people

  812. at the time

  813. who can tell Herod

  814. where Jesus is

  815. did not go

  816. to meet the king

  817. but the Magi went

  818. and they got

  819. to see the child king

  820. and pay their respect

  821. and honor

  822. but Herod did not

  823. because he was not

  824. sincere and authentic

  825. in his searching.

  826. He said he wants

  827. to worship Jesus

  828. but his actions

  829. say something else.

  830. His mind

  831. was preoccupied

  832. with other things

  833. with the worry

  834. of losing

  835. the control

  836. of his

  837. pretended kingdom.

  838. His mind

  839. was preoccupied

  840. with what to do

  841. to eliminate

  842. any new threat

  843. to his control.

  844. He's not willing

  845. to hand over

  846. his kingship yet.

  847. What are you not

  848. like in terms

  849. of holding on

  850. to things

  851. that you do not

  852. want to let go?

  853. What are you like

  854. in terms of

  855. being disturbed

  856. and distracted?

  857. How sincere

  858. and authentic

  859. in your worship

  860. of Jesus

  861. our Savior

  862. and Messiah.

  863. Jesus started

  864. his ministry

  865. in going from

  866. town to town

  867. to teach people

  868. about the kingdom

  869. of God

  870. after he turned

  871. 30 years old.

  872. In Luke 10

  873. it tells us

  874. that Martha

  875. opened her home

  876. to Jesus

  877. and his disciples

  878. to do their teaching.

  879. As soon as

  880. he entered the house

  881. Martha's

  882. sister Mary

  883. sat at the Lord's feet

  884. and listened

  885. to what he had to say.

  886. But Martha

  887. was distracted

  888. by all the preparation

  889. that had to be done.

  890. And she complained

  891. to Jesus

  892. and wanted Jesus

  893. to tell her

  894. sister Mary

  895. to stop sitting

  896. on her bedside

  897. and get up

  898. and help her.

  899. And this is what

  900. Jesus said to her.

  901. Martha,

  902. Martha,

  903. you are worried

  904. and upset

  905. about many things

  906. but few things

  907. are needed

  908. or indeed

  909. only one.

  910. Mary has chosen

  911. what is better

  912. and it will not

  913. be taken away

  914. from her.

  915. Jesus

  916. deserves

  917. our full attention

  918. and his message

  919. and his message

  920. is worth

  921. for us

  922. to drop

  923. everything

  924. to listen to.

  925. He is the only

  926. one thing

  927. that is needed

  928. for life.

  929. Is that who

  930. Jesus to you?

  931. With all that

  932. need to be prepared

  933. for the first

  934. season,

  935. it is easy

  936. to forget

  937. the most

  938. important things.

  939. The only one

  940. thing that is

  941. needed

  942. is to be

  943. at Jesus'

  944. feet.

  945. The best

  946. gift you can

  947. get for your

  948. family and

  949. friend

  950. is to tell

  951. them about

  952. Jesus.

  953. However,

  954. with the demand

  955. of life on us

  956. from family

  957. and work,

  958. we are often

  959. worried and upset

  960. about many things.

  961. Do you feel

  962. like being

  963. snowed under

  964. all the time?

  965. Don't be

  966. like Martha

  967. who gets

  968. worried and

  969. upset about

  970. many things.

  971. Be like

  972. Mary

  973. who chooses

  974. to be at

  975. the feet

  976. of Jesus

  977. to hear

  978. what he

  979. has to say.

  980. Jesus'

  981. teaching is

  982. the only

  983. one thing

  984. that is

  985. needed.

  986. Jesus is

  987. the only

  988. one who

  989. born to

  990. save.

  991. The newborn

  992. king comes

  993. to be ruler

  994. who shepherds

  995. God's people.

  996. If you are

  997. God's people,

  998. Jesus is

  999. your shepherd

  1000. and he

  1001. will lead

  1002. you to

  1003. the right

  1004. place to

  1005. meet your

  1006. needs.

  1007. Do you

  1008. believe that

  1009. he will

  1010. look after

  1011. you much

  1012. better than

  1013. what you

  1014. try to

  1015. plan to

  1016. do?

  1017. If you

  1018. believe he

  1019. will,

  1020. follow him.

  1021. Don't

  1022. wander around

  1023. like a

  1024. sheep.

  1025. Don't

  1026. just follow

  1027. the herd.

  1028. Make sure

  1029. you are

  1030. following the

  1031. shepherd.

  1032. Listen to

  1033. his voice

  1034. from the

  1035. Bible and

  1036. you will

  1037. not go

  1038. astray.

  1039. If you

  1040. have been

  1041. a regular

  1042. member of

  1043. St.

  1044. Paul's,

  1045. what time

  1046. did you

  1047. get here

  1048. today?

  1049. Have you

  1050. signed up

  1051. to join

  1052. a community

  1053. group?

  1054. And what

  1055. time did

  1056. you arrive

  1057. in the

  1058. last group

  1059. meeting?

  1060. Why are

  1061. you here?

  1062. Why are

  1063. you here

  1064. just to

  1065. clock in,

  1066. to make

  1067. yourself feel

  1068. good about

  1069. yourself,

  1070. to take

  1071. off what

  1072. you think

  1073. is the

  1074. requirement of

  1075. being a

  1076. Christian?

  1077. Are you

  1078. here to

  1079. truly treasure

  1080. Jesus together

  1081. with us in

  1082. bringing glory

  1083. to God and

  1084. joy to

  1085. others?

  1086. Is Jesus

  1087. truly your

  1088. King?

  1089. What effort

  1090. are you making

  1091. to be on

  1092. time at

  1093. church and

  1094. your gathering

  1095. with your

  1096. brothers and

  1097. sisters?

  1098. What

  1099. arrangement

  1100. have you

  1101. made so

  1102. that you

  1103. can stay

  1104. behind to

  1105. fellowship and

  1106. be part of

  1107. God's family

  1108. on Sunday?

  1109. Are you

  1110. always arriving

  1111. after the

  1112. singing worship

  1113. finished or

  1114. rushing off to

  1115. your lunchtime

  1116. appointment with

  1117. your friends?

  1118. Are you

  1119. here today to

  1120. worship Jesus?

  1121. Do you

  1122. worship Jesus

  1123. and getting to

  1124. know him more

  1125. and more every

  1126. day of the

  1127. week?

  1128. In your

  1129. day-to-day

  1130. life, is

  1131. Jesus the

  1132. true king of

  1133. your life?

  1134. Or does

  1135. your day-to-day

  1136. life show that

  1137. you have rejected

  1138. him and even

  1139. tried to kill

  1140. him because he

  1141. is threatening

  1142. the kingship and

  1143. control of your

  1144. life?

  1145. Have you

  1146. welcomed the

  1147. newborn king

  1148. with joy like

  1149. the Magi?

  1150. Or are you

  1151. protecting the

  1152. lordship of

  1153. your life in

  1154. your own

  1155. palace like

  1156. King Herod?

  1157. How far

  1158. would you

  1159. go to ensure

  1160. your career

  1161. goes according

  1162. to your plan?

  1163. How far

  1164. would you

  1165. go to ensure

  1166. you get what

  1167. you want for

  1168. your life and

  1169. your family?

  1170. Do you

  1171. truly believe

  1172. Jesus will

  1173. look after

  1174. you because

  1175. he is your

  1176. shepherd?

  1177. A writer and

  1178. theologian

  1179. Kim Keller

  1180. said there

  1181. is a little

  1182. herod in

  1183. all of us.

  1184. We are in

  1185. many ways just

  1186. like Herod when

  1187. we feel that the

  1188. control of our

  1189. life is being

  1190. threatened by

  1191. any outside

  1192. force.

  1193. We will do

  1194. whatever we

  1195. can to hold

  1196. on to that

  1197. control and

  1198. we are not

  1199. willing to let

  1200. someone else

  1201. to be king

  1202. of our life.

  1203. Is Jesus the

  1204. Messiah, the

  1205. king of your

  1206. life?

  1207. Are you

  1208. ready to

  1209. see your

  1210. Savior Christ?

  1211. Or are you

  1212. too busy and

  1213. distracted, worried

  1214. and upset about

  1215. many things?

  1216. Just as Jesus

  1217. said to Martha,

  1218. the only one

  1219. thing that is

  1220. needed, the

  1221. thing that once

  1222. we have chosen

  1223. will not be

  1224. taken from us,

  1225. is sitting at

  1226. Jesus' feet with

  1227. attentive ears and

  1228. listen to the

  1229. fulfillments and

  1230. wonders that he

  1231. unfolds by his

  1232. life.

  1233. He's
