  1. Good evening, everyone. It's great to be in church with you tonight. If I've never met

  2. you before, my name is Stephen, senior pastor here at St. Paul's. And it is always great

  3. to be at church with you, but particularly on, I think, Christmas time. I just love Christmas

  4. time. I've got three young girls at home right now. They've gone to bed. Hopefully they're

  5. asleep. And just excited. The reindeer food's been put out, attracting the possums and everything

  6. else. But they'll think it's the reindeers in the morning. Just an exciting time of year.

  7. And with three young girls, I noticed the youngest is seven at the moment. But when they're sort

  8. of around four or five, the height of ambition for them at this time of year, because they're

  9. girls and because they're too old to play Jesus in the nativity, the best thing is to be merry.

  10. They all kind of line up. They want to be merry. If they're going to have any sort of nativity

  11. play, every five-year-old girl wants to play merry. And each year, unfortunately, only one

  12. girl is ever picked. As it turns out, mine never been picked. I don't know how that worked

  13. out with the senior pastor thing. Because we don't play favourites around here. Each year,

  14. only one girl is ever picked. And they've reached the theatrical dizzying heights of being merry.

  15. And from these two central roles, if you're not Jesus, you're not merry in the nativity

  16. play. It's descending order of importance from that moment on. There's the Magi, which is

  17. fantastic. There's always a bunch of angels. They don't have to say too much. There's the

  18. shepherds. There's the King Herod. He's the boo-his guy. There's the sheep, the donkeys.

  19. Ironically, there was actually no donkeys actually in Bethlehem at the time. But for some reason,

  20. we've always got donkeys in the nativity scene. There's cows. And somewhere, there's some poor

  21. lad who gets the gig of Joseph. Doesn't say anything. Like most husbands at the birthday,

  22. their children. Just there. Because we're meant to be. And so some poor lad's got Joseph,

  23. and he really doesn't want to really say anything at all. And the scripts often forget that in actual

  24. fact, as we've just read, an angel also came to Joseph. He has a fairly key role in this whole

  25. nativity scene. In fact, there's at least one thing that the angel said to Joseph that he didn't

  26. tell anyone else. He didn't tell Mary, didn't tell the shepherds, said it just to Joseph. Angel

  27. tells Joseph in a dream that the baby that is to be born to his fiancee, Mary, is a fulfillment of a

  28. prophecy from hundreds of years earlier. And it's a prophecy that God would come and dwell amongst

  29. his people. And so in this interaction between Joseph and the angel, we have a very, very invaluable

  30. treasure. And so tonight, I just want to look at that passage from Matthew 1 really quick.

  31. Three main things to learn from the name Emmanuel. Only Joseph was told Emmanuel is his name.

  32. Three main things. Number one, Jesus is God. Number two, that he is human. And three, that he is with us.

  33. So I know it's a bit after 11, but three simple things to remember. Number one, Jesus is God.

  34. There are several ways that Matthew drives home the core Christmas message that Jesus is not simply

  35. a great religious leader. He's not just simply a great teacher or even some angelic being, but in fact,

  36. the divine God himself. In verse 20 of what Nick just read out to us, the angel tells Joseph that the human

  37. life that is growing inside Mary has come not from any human being, but from his heavenly father,

  38. from God himself. And so Jesus, if you like, has two fathers and Joseph will be Jesus' father only in a

  39. secondary sense. Mary is told in the text, is pregnant by the Holy Spirit. God is the real father.

  40. However, the most direct statement of Jesus' identity comes in verse 23. Matthew quotes from Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  41. several hundred years before, and he says,

  42. the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will call him Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  43. Now, for centuries, Jewish religious leaders and scholars had known about that prophecy,

  44. but they had not thought that it should be taken quite literally. Matthew is saying that this promise

  45. is greater than even all the scholars imagined. Jesus Christ is God with us because the human

  46. life growing in the womb of Mary was a miracle performed by God himself. This child, as we have just sung,

  47. is literally God. Now, Matthew was a Jew, which makes this statement really startling for him.

  48. You see, the Jewish had a distinctive view of God, which made them, the people on earth,

  49. at that time, least open to the idea that a human being could be God. At that time,

  50. Eastern religions believed God was an impersonal force permeating all things. And so it wasn't unusual

  51. for them to say that some human beings were, if you like, particularly great manifestations of the

  52. divine. Western religions at the time believed that gods would disguise themselves as human beings for their own purposes.

  53. So you see this in Greek and Roman mythology and in their concept of deity.

  54. Jews, however, believed in a God who was both personal and infinite.

  55. God was not a being within the universe, but was instead the ground of its existence and infinitely

  56. transcendent above the universe. So everything in a Jewish worldview was against the idea that a human

  57. being could be God. Jews would not even pronounce the name of their God, Yahweh.

  58. They wouldn't even spell it.

  59. And yet Jesus Christ,

  60. a Jew,

  61. by his life, by his claims and by his resurrection,

  62. convinced his closest Jewish followers

  63. that he was not just a prophet telling them how to find God,

  64. but that he was God himself

  65. coming to humanity.

  66. Now, Matthew is not the only biblical author to teach this.

  67. John,

  68. the apostle,

  69. Paul,

  70. another Jew,

  71. a Pharisee,

  72. the apostle Peter,

  73. another Jewish man,

  74. they all declared it.

  75. Now, of course,

  76. the opinions of these authors would not mean much if Jesus himself hadn't clearly declared his divine identity.

  77. All through the Gospels,

  78. every book,

  79. history book about Jesus,

  80. you see Jesus constantly forgiving sin,

  81. which only God can do.

  82. He also claims,

  83. I'm going to come back and I'm going to judge all of humanity across every culture and generation

  84. and only God can do that.

  85. And at many times,

  86. in many ways,

  87. Jesus Christ,

  88. a Jewish man says,

  89. I am God.

  90. And thousands and thousands of people came to believe him and worship him.

  91. It's a claim that we've just sung.

  92. Many in this world know the claim

  93. and give it lip service at Christmas

  94. without thinking about the implications of that claim

  95. and what we have just sung.

  96. If Jesus really is God,

  97. what does it mean for us practically?

  98. Well, firstly,

  99. it's a intellectual watershed.

  100. It's a turning point for us.

  101. Some have argued that the supreme miracle of Christianity

  102. is not the resurrection of Christ from the dead,

  103. but the coming of God into the world as a human being.

  104. Of all the things that Christianity proclaims,

  105. this one is the most staggering.

  106. A Canadian theologian, James Packer,

  107. puts it bluntly.

  108. He says,

  109. God became man.

  110. The divine son became a Jew.

  111. The almighty appeared on earth as a helpless human baby,

  112. unable to do more than lie,

  113. stare,

  114. wriggle,

  115. make noises,

  116. needing to be fed and changed

  117. and talked to

  118. like any other child.

  119. The more you think about it,

  120. the more staggering it gets.

  121. Nothing in fiction is as fantastic as this.

  122. The claim that Jesus is God

  123. is an intellectual turning point,

  124. but it also causes a personal crisis.

  125. A crisis is a fork in the road.

  126. And the assertion that Jesus Christ is God

  127. is exactly that.

  128. Whenever you see Jesus acting in the Gospels,

  129. you see him putting people in motion

  130. wherever he goes.

  131. He's like this giant bowling ball.

  132. Wherever he goes,

  133. he breaks up old patterns

  134. and he sends people off into different directions.

  135. Jesus evokes extreme reactions from everyone.

  136. Some are so furious with him

  137. that they try to run him off a cliff and kill him.

  138. Others are so terrified by him

  139. that they say,

  140. just depart from me, Jesus.

  141. Get away from me.

  142. And others fall down before him

  143. and worship him.

  144. Why the extreme reactions?

  145. It's because of who he claims to be.

  146. If he is who he is,

  147. who he says he is,

  148. then you have no alternative

  149. but to center your life around him

  150. as we have just sung.

  151. He claims to be the God

  152. who created all things,

  153. the source of all life,

  154. the one who defines all reality.

  155. And so if he is not who he says he is,

  156. then he is someone to hate,

  157. he is someone to run away from

  158. because he would have to be

  159. the greatest fraud in history.

  160. No other response makes sense.

  161. Either he is God or he isn't

  162. and so he's absolutely mad

  163. or he's infinitely wonderful.

  164. He's one or the other.

  165. He's not just someone in the middle

  166. that you can just admire.

  167. So thirdly, the claim that Jesus is God

  168. also gives us the greatest possible hope.

  169. You see, the one who defines all things,

  170. creates all things,

  171. determines, defines all reality,

  172. says that our world is not all that there is

  173. and there is life

  174. and there is love after death

  175. and that evil and suffering will one day end.

  176. But this is not just hope for the world

  177. despite all its unending problems,

  178. but hope for you and me

  179. despite all of our unending failings.

  180. A God who was only holy

  181. would never have come down to us in Jesus Christ.

  182. He would have simply just said,

  183. you lot, pull yourselves together.

  184. Pull your socks up.

  185. Live a little bit more morally.

  186. Make yourself holy enough

  187. to merit a relationship with me.

  188. A deity, on the other hand,

  189. that was an all-accepting God of love

  190. would never have needed to come to earth either.

  191. This God of the modern imagination

  192. would have just overlooked sin and evil

  193. and just embraced us all

  194. like a big jelly baby.

  195. And neither of these gods

  196. would have bothered with Christmas.

  197. The biblical God, however,

  198. is infinitely holy.

  199. So our sin cannot just be

  200. shrugged off and ignored.

  201. It has to be dealt with.

  202. But he is also infinitely loving.

  203. And he knows that we could never,

  204. ever climb up to him.

  205. And so he had to come to us.

  206. God had to come himself

  207. and do what we could not do.

  208. Christmas means then

  209. that there is all the hope in this world,

  210. in him.

  211. That's the first thing.

  212. Jesus is God.

  213. Secondly, Jesus is human.

  214. This interaction between Joseph and the angel

  215. reveals that he's God,

  216. but also that he's human,

  217. that he is God with us.

  218. Christmas tells us that Jesus was truly

  219. and fully God

  220. and truly and fully human.

  221. But what,

  222. I mean, who gives a rip?

  223. What difference does that make?

  224. That he is actually God

  225. who's become fully human.

  226. It means a life

  227. of sacrificial service,

  228. as Jake just read out to us

  229. from Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  230. That passage teaches us

  231. that when the Son of God became human,

  232. he did not lay aside his deity.

  233. He was still God,

  234. but he emptied himself of his glory.

  235. It's said there that it was something

  236. that he did not grasp,

  237. something he did not use

  238. for his own purposes,

  239. his own gain.

  240. He laid aside his divine rights.

  241. He became vulnerable and ordinary

  242. in order to save us.

  243. I'll quote Packer again.

  244. He puts it like this,

  245. for the Son of God

  246. to empty himself

  247. and become poor

  248. meant a laying aside of glory,

  249. a voluntary restraint of power,

  250. an acceptance of hardship,

  251. of isolation,

  252. of ill treatment,

  253. of malice and misunderstanding,

  254. and finally a death

  255. that involved such agony,

  256. spiritual even more than physical,

  257. that his mind nearly broke

  258. under the prospect of it.

  259. It meant love to the utmost

  260. for unloving humanity.

  261. And I love how Packer,

  262. what he does with that

  263. and what it means for us practically.

  264. He says,

  265. the Christmas spirit

  266. does not shine out

  267. in the Christian snob.

  268. For the Christmas spirit

  269. is the spirit of those

  270. who, like their master,

  271. live their whole lives

  272. on the principle

  273. of making themselves poor,

  274. spending and being spent

  275. to enrich their fellow humanity,

  276. giving time,

  277. trouble, care and concern,

  278. to do good to others

  279. and not just their own friends

  280. in whatever way

  281. there seems need.

  282. It's a life of service.

  283. The fact that God became human

  284. and entered himself

  285. of his glory

  286. means that you should not want

  287. to hang out with the people

  288. just with power and glitz

  289. who are well networked

  290. who can open doors for you.

  291. You need to be willing

  292. to go to the people

  293. without power,

  294. without beauty,

  295. without the money.

  296. That is the Christmas spirit.

  297. It is so ironic

  298. that we spend billions on it

  299. at Christmas time

  300. and more often than not,

  301. not for the needy

  302. and for the poor.

  303. God becoming one of us

  304. also means infinite comfort

  305. for the suffering.

  306. A little bit later

  307. in the New Testament

  308. in Hebrews 2, verse 17.

    Hebrews 2:17

  309. It says that Jesus

  310. was made just like us,

  311. fully human in every way.

  312. And the very next verse

  313. tells us what this means

  314. for us practically.

  315. It says,

  316. because he himself suffered

  317. when he was tried and tested,

  318. he is able to help those

  319. who are being tried and tested.

  320. You see,

  321. when something bad happens to us

  322. and real suffering comes to us,

  323. the overwhelming feeling

  324. we have is loneliness.

  325. People around us,

  326. they express sympathy,

  327. but, you know,

  328. you know,

  329. in the midst of them

  330. expressing their sympathy,

  331. you know,

  332. there's something about it

  333. that doesn't help.

  334. Then you meet someone

  335. who knows,

  336. who's been through

  337. exactly what you've been through,

  338. or virtually exactly

  339. what you've been through.

  340. They know what it's like.

  341. And you pour your heart

  342. out to that person.

  343. They've got empathy for you.

  344. You listen to them

  345. and their opinions

  346. because they've been through

  347. the same thing.

  348. And when they comfort you,

  349. you feel comforted by them.

  350. The coming of God

  351. into this world

  352. on the first Christmas

  353. ultimately means

  354. that God suffered

  355. and that Jesus triumphed

  356. through suffering.

  357. And Jesus now

  358. has infinite power

  359. to comfort.

  360. Christmas shows you

  361. a God

  362. unlike the God

  363. of any other faith.

  364. Have you been betrayed?

  365. Have you been lonely?

  366. Have you been destitute?

  367. Have you had relationships fracture?

  368. Have you felt abandoned?

  369. Have you faced death?

  370. So has he.

  371. And he's triumphed through it.

  372. Christianity says

  373. God has been all the places

  374. that you have been

  375. and are potentially in right now.

  376. He has been in the darkness

  377. that you are in now

  378. and even more.

  379. You can trust him.

  380. You can rely on him.

  381. He knows suffering.

  382. He has the power

  383. to comfort,

  384. strengthen

  385. and bring you through it

  386. because point number three,

  387. Jesus is with us.

  388. You see,

  389. it would have been

  390. astonishing enough

  391. if the Son of God

  392. had become human

  393. and simply lived

  394. temporarily amongst us

  395. and left us

  396. some really good teaching stuff

  397. to follow.

  398. Do this

  399. and life will go well

  400. for you.

  401. His plans

  402. were just so

  403. infinitely greater

  404. than that.

  405. His plan

  406. was always

  407. to be with us.

  408. He,

  409. one of the first things

  410. he did

  411. when he went public

  412. with his ministries,

  413. chose 12 dudes

  414. and,

  415. to follow him

  416. and appointed them

  417. as his early apostles.

  418. And he says,

  419. I want,

  420. you're going to be

  421. with me.

  422. What does it mean

  423. that they are

  424. with him?

  425. It means being

  426. in his presence,

  427. conversing with him,

  428. learning from him,

  429. having his comfort

  430. moment by moment

  431. in their day-by-day life.

  432. You see,

  433. the purpose of God

  434. coming into this world

  435. is that we would

  436. actually have

  437. a relationship

  438. with him,

  439. that we not just

  440. know information

  441. about him

  442. but have a relationship

  443. with him.

  444. In Jesus,

  445. the unapproachable God

  446. becomes a human being

  447. who can be known

  448. and loved.

  449. And through faith,

  450. we can know

  451. this love.

  452. And frankly,

  453. it doesn't stun us

  454. as much as it should.

  455. See,

  456. in the Old Testament,

  457. anytime anyone

  458. drew near to God,

  459. it was terrifying.

  460. Totally terrifying.

  461. God appears to Abraham

  462. as a smoking furnace,

  463. to Israel

  464. as a pillar of fire,

  465. to Job

  466. as a hurricane

  467. and a tornado.

  468. When Moses

  469. asked to see God

  470. face to face,

  471. he was told,

  472. yeah,

  473. but it'll kill you.

  474. So great

  475. and so high

  476. and so unapproachable

  477. is this God.

  478. And the message

  479. of Christmas

  480. means that through Jesus,

  481. you can meet this God

  482. and he won't kill you.

  483. You can know

  484. the unapproachable

  485. personally

  486. and without terror.

  487. And when God

  488. showed up in Jesus,

  489. he was not a pillar

  490. of fire,

  491. he was not a tornado,

  492. he was a baby.

  493. Why would God

  494. come to,

  495. this time,

  496. why would he come

  497. as a baby

  498. rather than a firestorm

  499. or a whirlwind?

  500. Because this time

  501. he came not to bring judgment

  502. but to bear it.

  503. to pay the penalty

  504. for our sin,

  505. to take away

  506. the barrier

  507. that existed,

  508. the wall of hostility

  509. between humanity

  510. and God

  511. so that we can

  512. be together.

  513. Jesus is God

  514. with us.

  515. Every Christmas,

  516. tonight,

  517. millions of people

  518. around this world

  519. will join with us

  520. and sing

  521. Jesus,

  522. our Emmanuel.

  523. But are you

  524. really with him?

  525. Do you know him

  526. or do you

  527. just know about him?

  528. Jesus literally

  529. moved heaven and earth

  530. to get near us.

  531. What should we

  532. be doing now

  533. to truly be with him?

  534. Well,

  535. there's one

  536. crucial trait,

  537. one crucial step

  538. that's necessary

  539. for having

  540. a personal relationship

  541. with Jesus

  542. and it's one

  543. that Christians,

  544. especially in

  545. Western society,

  546. we often

  547. overlook it.

  548. An intimate

  549. relationship

  550. with Jesus

  551. always requires

  552. courage.

  553. I mean,

  554. it's often

  555. overlooked

  556. Joseph

  557. in this whole

  558. story,

  559. how much courage

  560. he must have had

  561. to wake up

  562. from a dream

  563. with an angel

  564. and in his

  565. society

  566. to be

  567. shamed,

  568. to be,

  569. for his

  570. fiancee

  571. to be pregnant

  572. was an act

  573. of shame

  574. for him

  575. or for her

  576. or for both

  577. of them

  578. and then to go

  579. home and tell

  580. his mates,

  581. well,

  582. actually,

  583. I'm not the

  584. father,

  585. God is.

  586. That's plausible.

  587. It required

  588. an immense

  589. amount of

  590. courage

  591. for him

  592. to take

  593. Mary

  594. and for him

  595. to adopt

  596. Jesus

  597. and it

  598. requires

  599. courage

  600. of us.

  601. We cannot

  602. know Jesus

  603. personally

  604. unless we

  605. have the

  606. courage

  607. to admit

  608. that we

  609. are sinners.

  610. Jesus'

  611. entire

  612. mission

  613. is summed

  614. up in

  615. verse 21

  616. of the

  617. text that

  618. was read

  619. out to us

  620. from Matthew

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  621. chapter 1.

  622. He will

  623. save

  624. his people

  625. from their

  626. sins.

  627. First

  628. and foremost,

  629. Jesus came

  630. to forgive

  631. us.

  632. Every other

  633. blessing that

  634. we have,

  635. the comfort,

  636. the hope,

  637. every other

  638. blessing flows

  639. from that.

  640. Are you

  641. willing to

  642. say,

  643. I'm a moral

  644. failure?

  645. I don't love

  646. God with all

  647. of my heart,

  648. my soul,

  649. my strength,

  650. and my mind.

  651. I don't love

  652. my neighbour

  653. as myself.

  654. And therefore,

  655. I am guilty

  656. and I need

  657. forgiveness

  658. and pardon

  659. before I need

  660. anything else.

  661. That takes

  662. enormous courage

  663. to admit

  664. because it

  665. means that

  666. you throw

  667. your old

  668. self-image

  669. that you've

  670. spent your

  671. lifetime

  672. building

  673. out,

  674. you throw

  675. it out

  676. and you get

  677. a new one

  678. through Jesus.

  679. And yet,

  680. this is the

  681. foundation

  682. of every

  683. other

  684. blessing

  685. that Jesus

  686. wants to

  687. bring into

  688. your life.

  689. All the

  690. comfort,

  691. all the

  692. hope,

  693. all the

  694. joyful

  695. humility

  696. and everything

  697. else.

  698. So how

  699. do we

  700. get the

  701. strength

  702. to be

  703. courageous

  704. like that,

  705. to admit

  706. that we

  707. are moral

  708. failures

  709. and we

  710. need him?

  711. By

  712. looking at

  713. him.

  714. That's

  715. how we

  716. do it.

  717. Because if

  718. you think

  719. it takes

  720. courage to

  721. be with

  722. him,

  723. consider

  724. that it

  725. took

  726. infinitely

  727. more

  728. courage

  729. for

  730. him

  731. to

  732. be

  733. with

  734. us.

  735. Only

  736. Christianity

  737. of every

  738. world religion

  739. and

  740. philosophies,

  741. only Christianity

  742. says that

  743. one of the

  744. attributes of

  745. the divine

  746. God is

  747. courage.

  748. No other

  749. religion has

  750. a God who

  751. needed courage.

  752. God is

  753. to

  754. God is

  755. to

  756. save us

  757. only by

  758. facing an

  759. agonizing

  760. death that

  761. had him

  762. wrestling in

  763. sweat

  764. in a

  765. garden

  766. just before

  767. he was

  768. arrested.

  769. He became

  770. mortal and

  771. vulnerable so

  772. that he could

  773. suffer and be

  774. betrayed and

  775. killed.

  776. He faced

  777. all these

  778. things

  779. for you

  780. and for

  781. me and

  782. he thought

  783. it was

  784. worth it.

  785. Look at

  786. him.

  787. Face

  788. the

  789. darkness

  790. for you.

  791. Look at

  792. him doing

  793. that and

  794. that will

  795. enable you

  796. to face

  797. any darkness

  798. yourself.

  799. You've

  800. heard the

  801. phrase,

  802. hark the

  803. herald angels

  804. sing,

  805. mild he

  806. lays his

  807. glory by.

  808. What does

  809. it mean

  810. mild he

  811. lays his

  812. glory by?

  813. He did

  814. it voluntarily,

  815. he did

  816. it willingly

  817. and he

  818. did it

  819. lovingly.

  820. No one

  821. forced him,

  822. it wasn't

  823. his duty,

  824. he faced

  825. unimaginable

  826. pain and

  827. death out

  828. of love

  829. for you.

  830. Why did

  831. Jesus have

  832. the courage

  833. to do

  834. what he

  835. did for

  836. us?

  837. Love.

  838. No other

  839. explanation

  840. for it.

  841. And how

  842. do we get

  843. the courage

  844. to admit

  845. that we're

  846. sinners and

  847. need his

  848. forgiveness

  849. and a

  850. relationship

  851. with him

  852. exact same

  853. way?

  854. See him

  855. doing all

  856. that he

  857. did for

  858. us.

  859. That will

  860. draw out

  861. of us

  862. love for

  863. him.

  864. And then

  865. we will

  866. have the

  867. courage to

  868. put him

  869. where he

  870. belongs as

  871. the God

  872. of the

  873. universe

  874. in the

  875. center of

  876. our lives.

  877. And then

  878. he will be

  879. with us

  880. and you'll

  881. be with

  882. him.

  883. Emmanuel.

  884. Jesus

  885. is God.

  886. Jesus is

  887. human.

  888. And Jesus

  889. is with

  890. us.

  891. Merry

  892. Christmas.
