  1. About 500 years ago, a new theory regarding the world started to emerge.

  2. People used to think the planet Earth is the center of the universe,

  3. and everything revolves around it.

  4. But through observing the sky and recording the location of few known stars over time,

  5. a few scientists concluded that the sun is the center of our galaxy,

  6. and we revolve around the sun,

  7. and there is something much bigger that is at the center of the universe.

  8. Scientists and astronomers continue to explore the night sky

  9. in order to find out the size of our neighboring planets

  10. and their exact distance between each other

  11. in order to work out the size of the solar system

  12. and hopefully to work out the size of the Milky Way galaxy and the universe.

  13. In early 1700s, astronomer Edmund Haley proposed that

  14. one way to calculate the exact distance between each planet of our solar system

  15. is to observe Venus moving across in front of the sun

  16. from different parts of the world.

  17. So in 1769, Lieutenant James Cook travelled to Tahiti

  18. to observe the transits of Venus in front of the sun.

  19. The answer to great scientific question is in observing.

  20. By observing the sky,

  21. scientists were able to work out the exact distance

  22. between planets of our solar system.

  23. After his work at Tahiti was done,

  24. Lieutenant Cook carried on his forager,

  25. down south to survey and charter what they can find.

  26. And in April 1770,

  27. he landed on a huge uncharted landmark stand under,

  28. and he named his landing place Botany Bay.

  29. The planet Venus not just helped scientists

  30. to work out exact distance between planets.

  31. It also led to the landing of which Australia,

  32. the land down under, was found.

  33. Today, Psalms also tell us that

  34. the heaven and skies will help us to find out

  35. something very important for each one of us too.

  36. something as important as the finding of a new country

  37. and a new life.

  38. So let's pray.

  39. Father, as we start the new year

  40. and looking into your words,

  41. please help us to have attentive ears

  42. and an open heart for your words.

  43. Please help us in this coming year

  44. to keep searching and looking for who you really are

  45. and have a true relationship with you.

  46. In Jesus, I pray.

  47. Please turn with me to Psalm 19 again.

  48. I would like to use today's passage

  49. to answer the question,

  50. how do we know God?

  51. There are three areas that I want to explore with you.

  52. First one is,

  53. how is it possible to know God?

  54. Secondly,

  55. what does nature say about God?

  56. And lastly,

  57. what is the way to know God?

  58. So let's start from Psalm 19,

  59. first one to four.

  60. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  61. The skies proclaim the work of his hands.

  62. Day after day,

  63. they pour forth speech.

  64. Night after night,

  65. they reveal knowledge.

  66. They have no speech.

  67. They use no words.

  68. No sound is heard from them.

  69. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth.

  70. Their words to the ends of the world.

  71. When we start thinking about God,

  72. what does that make you feel?

  73. If I tell you,

  74. you are now in the presence of God,

  75. does that wake you up

  76. and cause you to sit up straight?

  77. Or does it make no difference

  78. because you think

  79. you already know God

  80. and be in his presence all the time?

  81. For many cultures,

  82. God is someone who hovers above us,

  83. waiting to send down thunder and lightning

  84. when we do something that he disapproves.

  85. We often associate God

  86. with punishment and retribution.

  87. How often do you think about the glory of God

  88. and the works of his hands?

  89. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  90. The skies proclaim the works of his hands.

  91. Do you believe God as a personal God

  92. that you can approach

  93. or a mysterious, powerful force

  94. that you need to reckon with?

  95. The Jewish tradition believed

  96. the divine name of God

  97. is too sacred to be uttered.

  98. So they used an equivalent of the Lord

  99. instead of calling God directly.

  100. They do not dare to call God's name directly

  101. out of fear and respect.

  102. The Chinese believe the realm of God

  103. is about three feet above our heads.

  104. So as we grow up,

  105. we are told we need to sit properly

  106. at our dining table

  107. and do not hit the table with our chopsticks

  108. because it will upset the gods above us.

  109. And what God will do is

  110. he will send us nightmares

  111. and make our teeth fall off when we sleep.

  112. Some believe God is localized

  113. in each particular culture.

  114. So the God of the Bible

  115. is a Western God

  116. and people from Asia

  117. should believe Buddha

  118. or people from Middle East

  119. should follow Allah.

  120. as if God is how human beings

  121. make him out to be,

  122. as if we control how God is to be known.

  123. Just like what people used to believe

  124. the world revolves around the planet Earth,

  125. we believe we are the center of the universe

  126. and everything revolves around us.

  127. If we hold to a very unhealthy

  128. and unrealistic view of God,

  129. how is it possible

  130. for you to know God?

  131. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  132. The skies proclaim the work of his hands.

  133. Day after day,

  134. they pour forth speech.

  135. Night after night,

  136. they reveal knowledge.

  137. The knowledge of the glory of God

  138. and the work of his hands

  139. is revealed to us

  140. through God's creation.

  141. It is possible to know God

  142. because God has revealed

  143. that knowledge to us.

  144. the heavens and the skies

  145. are calling out to us

  146. to say that there is much more

  147. to what we think

  148. we know about God.

  149. In verse 3,

  150. they have no speech.

  151. They use no words.

  152. The sound is heard from,

  153. no sound is heard from them.

  154. Yet their voice goes out into the earth.

  155. Their words to the end of the world.

  156. There is something very fundamental about God.

  157. It is so fundamental

  158. that we humans often miss it.

  159. We are often too busy

  160. working out how to keep the world

  161. revolving around us

  162. that we forget to observe

  163. the fundamental truth.

  164. It is there in the second half

  165. of verse 4.

  166. In the heavens,

  167. God has pitched a tent for the sun.

  168. The God of the universe,

  169. the God of our world,

  170. has everything under control,

  171. even the sun.

  172. God has pitched a tent for the sun.

  173. He has set the course for nature

  174. in place of his glory

  175. to reveal the knowledge

  176. of the work of his hands.

  177. God is not a concept

  178. of human imagination

  179. to somehow make us feel better

  180. about ourselves

  181. or to help us

  182. to parenting our kids.

  183. God,

  184. not us,

  185. not you or me,

  186. is the center of our universe

  187. and he is active

  188. in reaching out to us

  189. for us to know him better.

  190. So,

  191. how is it possible

  192. to know God?

  193. It is possible

  194. to know God

  195. because God

  196. has revealed

  197. that knowledge to us.

  198. It is possible

  199. to know God

  200. because God

  201. is much bigger

  202. than what we can imagine

  203. him to be

  204. and he is under control.

  205. Everything in nature

  206. has its proper course

  207. for us to know God.

  208. In the heavens,

  209. God has pitched a tent

  210. for the sun.

  211. It is like a bridegroom

  212. coming out of his chamber,

  213. like a champion

  214. rejoicing to run his course.

  215. It raises at one end

  216. of the heavens

  217. and makes its circuits

  218. to the other.

  219. Nothing is deprived

  220. of its warmth.

  221. God has said

  222. the most powerful thing

  223. in nature,

  224. the sun,

  225. in a circuit.

  226. God has pitched

  227. a tent for it.

  228. What is the meaning

  229. of that to us?

  230. What does that say

  231. about God?

  232. I believe

  233. it says that

  234. no matter how powerful

  235. we think the nature is,

  236. it is not God.

  237. For many years

  238. and even now,

  239. many cultures

  240. worship nature.

  241. They worship

  242. the sun,

  243. the moon.

  244. However,

  245. nature is only

  246. the reflection

  247. of the glory of God.

  248. God has a power

  249. and ability

  250. to manipulate nature

  251. to achieve

  252. his goals.

  253. But not every

  254. natural phenomenon

  255. is a result

  256. of God's manipulation.

  257. when natural disasters

  258. strike,

  259. like a tsunami

  260. or earthquake,

  261. to attribute them

  262. to God

  263. and saying God

  264. is pronouncing judgment

  265. is very irresponsible

  266. and wrong.

  267. The same attitude

  268. can be applied

  269. to our lives,

  270. ups and downs.

  271. Not all the ups

  272. are the reward

  273. of God

  274. and not all the downs

  275. are the punishment

  276. from God.

  277. God

  278. is not

  279. the purpose

  280. of the sun

  281. to run its course

  282. is that nothing

  283. is deprived

  284. of its warmth.

  285. The presence

  286. of the sun

  287. is unavoidable.

  288. It hits

  289. every senses

  290. of our body.

  291. The bright light

  292. hits your eyes,

  293. the warmth

  294. you feel

  295. on your skin.

  296. The presence

  297. of God

  298. is even more

  299. unavoidable

  300. and undeniable.

  301. My family

  302. went to

  303. Hokkaido,

  304. Japan

  305. on Christmas Eve

  306. and we got back

  307. just after

  308. the New Year.

  309. In Hokkaido,

  310. there is no

  311. New Year Eve

  312. countdown

  313. or firework.

  314. So we followed

  315. the Japanese tradition

  316. and we got up

  317. around 5 in the morning

  318. on New Year Day.

  319. We caught the cable car

  320. to man

  321. Mao

  322. and

  323. to welcome

  324. the first sunrise

  325. of 2019.

  326. The sun

  327. meant to come out

  328. at 7 or 3

  329. in the morning

  330. but it was

  331. very windy

  332. and stormy.

  333. The snow

  334. was just blowing

  335. very heavy.

  336. So we didn't

  337. see the sun

  338. until about

  339. 8 o'clock.

  340. But we feel

  341. the sky

  342. brighten up.

  343. The temperature

  344. when we get up

  345. to the mountain

  346. is negative 3.

  347. Just before

  348. the sun rises

  349. it drops

  350. to negative 6.

  351. But after

  352. the sun rises

  353. it becomes

  354. 0 degrees.

  355. So we feel

  356. the warmth

  357. swell a little bit.

  358. The presence

  359. of God

  360. like the sun

  361. is undeniable.

  362. David

  363. in another

  364. psalm

  365. in Psalm 139

    Psalms 139:7–10

  366. verse 7

  367. to 10

  368. says this.

  369. Where can I

  370. go from

  371. your spirit?

  372. Where can I

  373. flee

  374. from your

  375. presence?

  376. If I go up

  377. to the heaven

  378. you are there.

  379. If I make

  380. my bed

  381. in the death

  382. you are there.

  383. If I rise

  384. on the wings

  385. of the dawn

  386. if I settle

  387. on the far

  388. side of the sea

  389. even there

  390. your hand

  391. will guide me.

  392. Your right hand

  393. will hold me

  394. fast.

  395. nature

  396. tell us

  397. that God

  398. like the sun

  399. will surely

  400. rise after

  401. a long

  402. dark night

  403. to provide

  404. us with

  405. warmth.

  406. God is

  407. everywhere

  408. and he knows

  409. our coming

  410. and going

  411. and the works

  412. of his hand

  413. is to guide

  414. us and hold

  415. fast to us.

  416. You might

  417. for some reason

  418. want to run

  419. away from God.

  420. You might want

  421. to go from

  422. his spirit

  423. and flee

  424. from his presence

  425. but no matter

  426. where you run

  427. to

  428. he will be

  429. there

  430. up to the

  431. heavens

  432. or down

  433. to the

  434. death.

  435. God is

  436. there

  437. not to

  438. punish you

  439. but to

  440. celebrate

  441. your life

  442. with you

  443. like a

  444. bridegroom

  445. running out

  446. of his

  447. chamber

  448. like a

  449. champion

  450. rejoicing

  451. in running

  452. his course.

  453. God will

  454. go from

  455. one end

  456. of the

  457. heavens

  458. to the

  459. other end

  460. to make

  461. sure you

  462. fulfill the

  463. course that

  464. he set

  465. for your

  466. life

  467. and declare

  468. the glory

  469. of God.

  470. Do you

  471. look at

  472. God

  473. with this

  474. kind of

  475. understanding?

  476. What do you

  477. think is

  478. the purpose

  479. of life

  480. God has

  481. intended for

  482. you?

  483. Or are you

  484. currently trying

  485. to flee and

  486. hide from the

  487. presence of

  488. God?

  489. One other

  490. thing we can

  491. learn from

  492. the metaphor

  493. of the

  494. son is

  495. that God

  496. is concealed

  497. from human

  498. sight for

  499. a reason?

  500. In our

  501. stupidity,

  502. we often

  503. think that

  504. we can

  505. handle the

  506. ray of

  507. the sun

  508. blinding

  509. ourselves.

  510. We often

  511. think that

  512. we can

  513. handle

  514. God.

  515. We say

  516. things like,

  517. if God

  518. is so

  519. loving,

  520. why did

  521. he allow

  522. suffering

  523. to exist

  524. in this

  525. world or

  526. in my

  527. life?

  528. If God

  529. is for

  530. me,

  531. why don't

  532. things go

  533. my way?

  534. God is

  535. the most

  536. important

  537. thing of

  538. this

  539. universe.

  540. He set

  541. everything

  542. into

  543. motion.

  544. He is

  545. in

  546. control,

  547. and he is

  548. the only

  549. one that

  550. really knows

  551. what is

  552. best for

  553. you and

  554. me.

  555. So let

  556. me encourage

  557. you to

  558. look into

  559. nature and

  560. be amazed

  561. of the

  562. glory of

  563. God that

  564. he declares

  565. and proclaims.

  566. Let me

  567. encourage you

  568. to run

  569. towards

  570. him and

  571. not away

  572. from him,

  573. for he

  574. will guide

  575. you and

  576. hold fast

  577. to you.

  578. We can

  579. know God

  580. because God

  581. has revealed

  582. himself to

  583. us through

  584. his creation,

  585. through the

  586. heavens and

  587. the skies.

  588. The nature

  589. tells us God

  590. is much bigger

  591. than what we

  592. can imagine

  593. him to be.

  594. God is

  595. everywhere and

  596. all-powerful,

  597. and he

  598. controls even

  599. the sun.

  600. So how do

  601. we really

  602. know God?

  603. Is

  604. looking at

  605. nature and

  606. God's

  607. creation enough

  608. to let us

  609. know God

  610. intimately?

  611. Let's

  612. read on

  613. from Psalm

    Psalms 19:7

  614. 19,

  615. verse 7.

  616. And we

  617. look at the

  618. last point,

  619. what is the

  620. way to

  621. know God?

  622. Verse 7.

  623. The law

  624. of the

  625. Lord is

  626. perfect,

  627. refreshing

  628. the soul.

  629. The

  630. statue of

  631. the

  632. Lord are

  633. trustworthy,

  634. making

  635. wise the

  636. simple.

  637. The

  638. precepts of

  639. the

  640. Lord are

  641. bright,

  642. giving joy

  643. to the

  644. heart.

  645. The

  646. commands of

  647. the

  648. Lord are

  649. radiant,

  650. giving light

  651. to the

  652. eyes.

  653. The

  654. fear of

  655. the

  656. Lord is

  657. pure,

  658. enduring

  659. forever.

  660. The

  661. decrees of

  662. the

  663. Lord are

  664. firm,

  665. and all

  666. of them

  667. are

  668. righteous.

  669. The

  670. Psalms tell

  671. us that

  672. by our

  673. serving

  674. nature,

  675. it's not

  676. enough to

  677. know God

  678. intimately.

  679. We need

  680. something more

  681. from God.

  682. The

  683. law,

  684. statutes,

  685. percepts,

  686. commands,

  687. and decrees

  688. of God

  689. referring to

  690. his words.

  691. These are

  692. what we can

  693. find in the

  694. Bible.

  695. Nature is

  696. only a

  697. pointer,

  698. pointing us

  699. to the

  700. specific

  701. revelation of

  702. God through

  703. his words.

  704. The

  705. Bible is

  706. given to

  707. us as

  708. the most

  709. reliable

  710. source of

  711. knowing God

  712. intimately

  713. to build

  714. a personal

  715. relationship

  716. with God.

  717. The

  718. Bible is

  719. perfect,

  720. it's

  721. trustworthy,

  722. it's right,

  723. it's radiant,

  724. it's firm.

  725. It

  726. refreshes the

  727. soul,

  728. it makes

  729. simple people

  730. wise,

  731. it gives

  732. joy to

  733. the heart,

  734. gives light

  735. to the eyes,

  736. and all of

  737. it are

  738. righteous.

  739. As we

  740. know God

  741. intimately,

  742. as we

  743. build a

  744. personal

  745. relationship

  746. with God,

  747. we shall

  748. have a

  749. sense of

  750. fear

  751. towards

  752. God

  753. growing

  754. within

  755. us.

  756. This is

  757. not the

  758. same fear

  759. that most

  760. cultures

  761. don't know

  762. about God

  763. personally

  764. have.

  765. It's not

  766. a fear

  767. of punishment

  768. or retribution.

  769. As we

  770. experience the

  771. greatness and

  772. glory of

  773. God,

  774. as we

  775. come to

  776. realize how

  777. precious is

  778. our

  779. relationship

  780. with God,

  781. how sweet

  782. it is to

  783. be loved

  784. by the

  785. creator of

  786. the universe,

  787. his word

  788. warns us

  789. that in

  790. obeying God

  791. there's

  792. great reward.

  793. Do you

  794. find it

  795. strange that

  796. we are

  797. warned about

  798. a great

  799. reward?

  800. Wouldn't it

  801. make more

  802. sense to

  803. say in

  804. disobeying

  805. there's a

  806. great

  807. punishment?

  808. But instead

  809. say that's

  810. a great

  811. reward.

  812. God is

  813. not

  814. hovering above

  815. us,

  816. waiting to

  817. punish us,

  818. but he

  819. knows that

  820. we are

  821. so feeble

  822. that we

  823. cannot

  824. discern

  825. our own

  826. error or

  827. keep

  828. ourselves

  829. from

  830. sinning

  831. against

  832. him.

  833. So he

  834. became

  835. one of

  836. us and

  837. lived among

  838. us and

  839. paid the

  840. price for

  841. our

  842. disobedience

  843. on the

  844. cross.

  845. God

  846. had done

  847. the

  848. impossible

  849. to make

  850. it possible

  851. for us

  852. to be

  853. in loving

  854. relationship

  855. with him.

  856. by trusting

  857. him for

  858. his grace,

  859. he will

  860. forgive our

  861. hidden

  862. thoughts

  863. because the

  864. punishment for

  865. our disobedience

  866. has fully

  867. paid out.

  868. There are

  869. only rewards

  870. left within

  871. our relationship

  872. with God.

  873. Apostle

  874. Paul is

  875. so overwhelmed

  876. by the

  877. greatness and

  878. majesty of

  879. God,

  880. he breaks

  881. out with

  882. these words

  883. in Romans

    Romans 11:33–36

  884. 11,

  885. verse 33

  886. to 36.

  887. O the

  888. death of

  889. the riches

  890. of the

  891. wisdom

  892. and

  893. knowledge

  894. of God!

  895. How

  896. unsearchable

  897. is his

  898. judgment,

  899. his path

  900. beyond

  901. tracing

  902. out!

  903. Who has

  904. known the

  905. mind of

  906. the Lord,

  907. or who

  908. has been

  909. his

  910. counselor,

  911. who has

  912. even given

  913. to God

  914. that God

  915. should

  916. repay

  917. them?

  918. For

  919. from him

  920. and through

  921. him and

  922. for him

  923. are all

  924. things,

  925. to him

  926. be the

  927. glory

  928. forever.

  929. Amen.

  930. By

  931. treasuring

  932. our

  933. relationship

  934. with God

  935. like pure

  936. gold and

  937. honey from

  938. the

  939. honeycomb,

  940. God will

  941. keep you

  942. from

  943. willful

  944. sins,

  945. from being

  946. ruled over

  947. by evil.

  948. He will

  949. make you

  950. blameless

  951. and keep

  952. you in

  953. relationship

  954. with him

  955. forever.

  956. This is

  957. the right

  958. kind of

  959. fee,

  960. the right

  961. kind of

  962. attitude

  963. towards

  964. the almighty

  965. creator

  966. of this

  967. universe.

  968. Take

  969. courage

  970. that God

  971. is full

  972. of wonders,

  973. big with

  974. mercy,

  975. and because

  976. of what he

  977. had done

  978. for you,

  979. he looks

  980. upon you

  981. with a

  982. smiling face.

  983. We can

  984. find God

  985. because he

  986. has revealed

  987. himself to

  988. us through

  989. his creation,

  990. used them

  991. as a

  992. pointer to

  993. point us

  994. to his

  995. words,

  996. the Bible.

  997. The creation

  998. of God,

  999. nature of

  1000. itself,

  1001. cannot

  1002. help us

  1003. to build

  1004. an intimate

  1005. personal

  1006. relationship

  1007. with God.

  1008. The word

  1009. of God

  1010. is the

  1011. way to

  1012. know

  1013. God.

  1014. How are

  1015. we to

  1016. know

  1017. God?

  1018. God is

  1019. his own

  1020. interpreter

  1021. and he

  1022. will make

  1023. it plain

  1024. to us.

  1025. So

  1026. forgive my

  1027. hidden

  1028. thoughts.

  1029. Keep

  1030. your servant

  1031. also from

  1032. willful

  1033. sins.

  1034. May they

  1035. not rule

  1036. over me,

  1037. then I

  1038. will be

  1039. blameless,

  1040. innocent,

  1041. of great

  1042. transgression.

  1043. May these

  1044. words of

  1045. my mouth

  1046. and this

  1047. meditation of

  1048. my heart

  1049. be pleasing

  1050. to your

  1051. sight,

  1052. Lord,

  1053. my rock

  1054. and my

  1055. redeemers.

  1056. My wishes

  1057. for you

  1058. in the

  1059. new year

  1060. are to

  1061. discover

  1062. God

  1063. through

  1064. his

  1065. word,

  1066. to

  1067. discover

  1068. your

  1069. rock

  1070. and your

  1071. redeemer,

  1072. to have

  1073. a pleasing

  1074. personal

  1075. relationship

  1076. with God.
