  1. Good morning again.

  2. Welcome to our gathering as a church family.

  3. For those that may not know me, my name is John.

  4. I'm a regular member of this church and currently training in a theology college

  5. to know God more and to better serve all of you.

  6. So each year, as part of our training, the students have opportunity to team up with churches

  7. and organizations for a week of intense ministry and mission works.

  8. So last week, the students were all around Australia and also overseas to spread the good news of God.

  9. We had teams in Melbourne, northwestern Australia.

  10. We have people in the Bible College in South Africa and a couple of Anakin churches and schools in Hong Kong

  11. and all over Sydney, with the closest one being Ataman and the Shores School.

  12. I myself joined 12 students, one faculty and one lady chaplain in Hong Kong

  13. to partner with St. Andrew's Kowloon.

  14. We were involved in kids and youth ministry, men's breakfast, women ministry, home workers' devotion.

  15. We visited three universities to reach out to the students.

  16. And we also get a bit of sightseeing around Hong Kong and we actually joined the gaily dance,

  17. which is a Scottish dance that you go around and around like that.

  18. So for those of you that have kept me in your prayer, I really want to thank you for your support.

  19. I would also like to especially thank my wife, Vivian, because she took a look after our two kids while I was away.

  20. The team in Hong Kong had a very encouraging time.

  21. It was mostly encouraging, but we had a very encouraging time because we actually had a lot of chance to speak to people around in Hong Kong.

  22. But personally, I was most encouraged because I got to catch up with three friends that is from high school,

  23. which I haven't seen for 30 years.

  24. And it was very encouraging because we were able to speak from our heart and I was able to share my faith with them,

  25. get to know them more.

  26. And I guess when I left Hong Kong, we were sort of on a good friendship already.

  27. So I was able to rekindle that friendship and hopefully maintain that friendship.

  28. It was very encouraging to me.

  29. And also to actually find out that a lot of my old high school classmates are actually believers,

  30. faithful believers, brother and sister in Christ, that we are serving the same God.

  31. It's also very encouraging to me.

  32. So if you have a chance to catch up with some long-lost friend,

  33. what would you be focusing on with your conversation?

  34. What would you hope to happen during that meeting?

  35. Are there issues that you might have left and dealt with that need to be resolved?

  36. And what would you celebrate about?

  37. Nick already shared that since last few weeks ago and leading up to Easter,

  38. we as a church family have been looking into the book of John

  39. to actually see Jesus' interaction with his follower

  40. before his imminent departure from earth to go back to God's side.

  41. We saw how Jesus reassure and encouraged his follower,

  42. promising the sending of the Holy Spirit after his departure

  43. to remind them of things that he has spoken to them until he returned.

  44. Jesus then pointed out that as someone follows him and do his command,

  45. that person will be transformed to be his friend

  46. and the transformed life will be a fruitful life.

  47. This new life that he gives will also be an uncomfortable one

  48. because the world hates and will persecute those that follow Jesus.

  49. However, he also pointed out that he has overcome the world

  50. and his followers will live a joyful life

  51. when they see the return of Christ Jesus their King.

  52. In all this conversation,

  53. Jesus has been using a future tense when he referred to his departure.

  54. But now we come to chapter 17.

  55. At the very beginning, Jesus says,

  56. the hour has come.

  57. The hour for his arrest and to face his death

  58. and his resurrection is only a few hours away.

  59. And Jesus takes this time to speak with his Father.

  60. In this chapter, we can see what concerns Jesus the most.

  61. We can see what is on Jesus' heart.

  62. As we drop in on Jesus' conversation with God,

  63. we will know Jesus more.

  64. A German reformer that worked with Martin Luther

  65. and had contributed a lot towards the Reformation

  66. is Philip Malenthin.

  67. And he said this about this chapter.

  68. There is no voice which has ever been heard,

  69. either in heaven or in earth,

  70. more exalted, more holy, more fruitful,

  71. more sublime than this prayer

  72. offered up by the Son of God himself.

  73. Most scholars and commentators would say

  74. this is where we are given

  75. the most profound revelation

  76. of the very heart of our Lord Jesus.

  77. If you have been a Christian for a while,

  78. I encourage you to take some time

  79. to read through this chapter again after today.

  80. And if you do not know who is Jesus

  81. that many people have decided to follow,

  82. you should also read this chapter.

  83. This chapter provides the best evidence

  84. of the deity of Jesus Christ,

  85. his self-consciousness of his identity,

  86. the claim that he made about himself,

  87. especially of his universal dominant,

  88. his reference to a previous existence

  89. in living unity with the eternal God.

  90. Leave us with no match,

  91. not much choice.

  92. We can either decide that he's a lunatic,

  93. he's insane, or he's God.

  94. Even if you're not interested

  95. in who Jesus really is,

  96. but interested in what life is about

  97. if someone decided to follow Jesus

  98. and become a Christian,

  99. you can also find the answer here

  100. by Jesus' own words

  101. as he prayed for those that were following him

  102. and for those that would believe in him

  103. through the message of those followers.

  104. So please open your Bible to John 17 again

  105. and let's walk through this chapter together

  106. to see what it has to offer to us.

  107. We'll begin from verse 1 to 5.

  108. After Jesus said this,

  109. he looked towards heaven and prayed,

  110. Father, the hour has come.

  111. Glorify your Son,

  112. that your Son may glorify you.

  113. For you grant him authority over all people,

  114. that he may give eternal life

  115. to all those you have given him.

  116. Now this is eternal life,

  117. that they know you,

  118. the only true God,

  119. and Jesus Christ,

  120. whom you have sent.

  121. I have brought you glory on earth

  122. by finishing the work you have gave me to do.

  123. And now, Father,

  124. glorify me in your presence

  125. with the glory I have with you

  126. before the world began.

  127. As I'm meeting up with my old school friends,

  128. in our polite nature,

  129. the question of

  130. who's your best friend at school

  131. has often come up.

  132. But we rarely ask them,

  133. like,

  134. who upsets you the most

  135. or who you dislike the most.

  136. I guess it goes without saying

  137. that the kind of student

  138. that we dislike the most

  139. would be those teacher's pets,

  140. self-glorifying and self-centered people.

  141. As you read this passage,

  142. it comes across Jesus as a bit selfish

  143. by starting praying for himself.

  144. But however,

  145. it's furthest removed from selfishness

  146. as possible.

  147. Jesus prayed

  148. to be glorified

  149. in order that

  150. he might glorify his Father.

  151. And there's a reason

  152. that he can offer

  153. eternal life

  154. to his follower.

  155. First one,

  156. he says,

  157. Father,

  158. the hour has come.

  159. Glorify your Son

  160. that your Son may glorify you.

  161. For you grant him authority

  162. over all people

  163. that he might give eternal life

  164. to all those

  165. you have given him.

  166. By his request

  167. to be glorified,

  168. Jesus referred

  169. to his crucifixion

  170. that is going to happen

  171. within a few hours.

  172. His triumph over the grave

  173. after three days,

  174. his ascension,

  175. and supremely

  176. his outpouring

  177. of the Holy Spirit.

  178. To glorify someone

  179. is to make that someone known.

  180. Jesus decided to be known

  181. in his true character

  182. as an obedient,

  183. divine Son of God,

  184. as a gracious Messiah,

  185. as a merciful Savior

  186. of the world.

  187. All these attributes

  188. were manifest

  189. in the hour

  190. which had come

  191. and extended

  192. to the time

  193. when all the believers

  194. gather together

  195. and receive the gift

  196. of the Holy Spirit.

  197. This gift

  198. constitutes

  199. or secure

  200. the answer

  201. to his prayer.

  202. by the glory

  203. of the Son,

  204. by Jesus making

  205. the true character

  206. and identity

  207. of himself

  208. known to the world,

  209. people will come

  210. to know the Father

  211. and the glory

  212. of the Father

  213. was secured.

  214. God was never

  215. so fully refilled

  216. in all his justice

  217. and love

  218. and holiness

  219. and grace

  220. as by the hour

  221. with which

  222. we are focusing

  223. our current

  224. preaching series on.

  225. In addition,

  226. eternal life

  227. was also secure

  228. for the follower

  229. of Christ.

  230. In verse 3,

  231. it says,

  232. this is eternal life

  233. that they know you,

  234. the only true God

  235. and Jesus Christ

  236. whom you have sent.

  237. To know

  238. is not just

  239. an act of mind.

  240. It's not just

  241. a head knowledge

  242. because in that sense,

  243. demons know God.

  244. But to know

  245. it represents

  246. love,

  247. obedience,

  248. faith,

  249. the response

  250. of an entire

  251. human being.

  252. To know

  253. is to be intimate

  254. and have close

  255. relationship

  256. with someone.

  257. Therefore,

  258. the eternal life

  259. that is referred to

  260. is not only

  261. a future event

  262. but a present

  263. experience.

  264. It means

  265. endless

  266. existence

  267. in the future

  268. but also

  269. a present

  270. heavenly blessedness.

  271. We know

  272. we can go to heaven

  273. but at this stage

  274. right here

  275. we can experience

  276. the blessedness

  277. that God gave us.

  278. Jesus

  279. prays this prayer

  280. based on

  281. the fact that

  282. his entire

  283. earthly task

  284. was completed.

  285. First of all,

  286. he says,

  287. I have brought you

  288. glory on earth

  289. by finishing

  290. the work

  291. you have gave me

  292. to do.

  293. The supreme

  294. sacrifice

  295. seems to him

  296. to have been made.

  297. His work

  298. was finished.

  299. He would

  300. therefore pray

  301. and now

  302. Father

  303. glorify me

  304. in your presence

  305. with the glory

  306. I have with you

  307. before the world

  308. began.

  309. If you are told

  310. your death

  311. is only a few

  312. hours away,

  313. will you have

  314. the confidence

  315. to say

  316. my life

  317. is complete

  318. and his work

  319. is finished.

  320. To many of us,

  321. life seems to be

  322. a pathetic series

  323. of beginnings

  324. and failures

  325. and imperfect

  326. strife

  327. and endeavours.

  328. However,

  329. if we do

  330. the will of God,

  331. the symbol

  332. of our life

  333. need not to be

  334. some broken columns.

  335. for someone

  336. who had only

  337. three years

  338. of ministry,

  339. only healed a few

  340. sick people,

  341. preached only a few

  342. sermons,

  343. only 11 followers

  344. secured

  345. and many

  346. deserters,

  347. no book

  348. have written,

  349. no church

  350. or organisation

  351. established,

  352. it seems a bit

  353. premature to say

  354. my work on earth

  355. is finished.

  356. But the hour

  357. has come,

  358. his work on earth

  359. about to finish

  360. and he need not

  361. to linger anymore,

  362. only the cross

  363. remains

  364. and the glory

  365. fulfilled.

  366. We follow on

  367. in this passage,

  368. Jesus pray for,

  369. pray next

  370. for his immediate

  371. disciples,

  372. for the twelve

  373. who have followed

  374. him and been

  375. with him.

  376. this is a very

  377. special group

  378. of people

  379. that have the

  380. privilege

  381. to be the eyewitnesses

  382. of Jesus'

  383. ministry on earth.

  384. However,

  385. the term

  386. disciples

  387. is not just

  388. reserved for them.

  389. Anyone can be

  390. Jesus' disciples,

  391. anyone can be

  392. counted as a

  393. Christian.

  394. So have you

  395. ever asked

  396. who is a

  397. disciple?

  398. What does it

  399. mean to be a

  400. Christian

  401. or a follower

  402. of Christ?

  403. Jesus has

  404. provided the

  405. answer personally

  406. in this prayer

  407. for these

  408. questions.

  409. In verse 6

  410. to 8,

  411. he identified

  412. his followers

  413. as those

  414. whom God

  415. gave him

  416. out of the

  417. world,

  418. whom have

  419. obeyed God's

  420. word.

  421. There are those

  422. that accepted

  423. the words of God

  424. that were given

  425. through Jesus

  426. and they believed

  427. that God

  428. sent Jesus

  429. and knew with

  430. certainty that

  431. Jesus came

  432. from God.

  433. So a disciple

  434. or follower

  435. of Jesus,

  436. a Christian,

  437. is one

  438. who got

  439. taken out

  440. of the world

  441. to believe

  442. God sent

  443. Jesus and

  444. believe that

  445. Jesus came

  446. from God.

  447. This belief

  448. came from

  449. accepting and

  450. obeying the

  451. word of God

  452. that was

  453. presented through

  454. Jesus.

  455. At this

  456. special moment,

  457. Jesus prays

  458. specifically for

  459. his immediate

  460. disciples and

  461. asked two

  462. specific things

  463. for them.

  464. First,

  465. he prayed that

  466. they may be

  467. kept from

  468. evil.

  469. In verse 11,

  470. it read,

  471. I will remain

  472. in the world

  473. no longer,

  474. but they are

  475. still in the

  476. world,

  477. and I am

  478. coming to you.

  479. Holy Father,

  480. protect them

  481. by the power

  482. of your name,

  483. or Father,

  484. keep them

  485. faithful to

  486. your name,

  487. the name you

  488. gave me,

  489. so that they

  490. may be one

  491. as we are

  492. one.

  493. It is because

  494. Jesus is

  495. leaving them

  496. that he

  497. prays for

  498. his

  499. disprotection.

  500. While Jesus

  501. was with

  502. them,

  503. he protected

  504. them,

  505. but now

  506. he is

  507. leaving,

  508. and he

  509. knows that

  510. the world

  511. will hate

  512. them.

  513. He

  514. commits

  515. them to

  516. the care

  517. of his

  518. Father.

  519. It is

  520. at this

  521. verse and

  522. previous

  523. verse that

  524. we also

  525. see what

  526. Jesus

  527. claimed about

  528. himself.

  529. The first

  530. thing before

  531. that is

  532. verse 10,

  533. he said,

  534. all I have

  535. is yours,

  536. and all you

  537. have is

  538. mine.

  539. So that

  540. they may

  541. be one

  542. as we

  543. are one.

  544. Jesus is

  545. claiming that

  546. he is one

  547. with God,

  548. that he

  549. and God

  550. is one.

  551. In his

  552. prayer,

  553. he does

  554. not ask

  555. that they

  556. shall be

  557. taken out

  558. of the

  559. world.

  560. He does

  561. not ask

  562. that they

  563. shall be

  564. kept from

  565. sorrow and

  566. pain and

  567. temptation.

  568. But he

  569. prays that

  570. they will

  571. be kept

  572. from gloom

  573. and

  574. discouragement

  575. and sin.

  576. Verse 15,

  577. it reads,

  578. my prayer

  579. is not

  580. that you

  581. take them

  582. out of

  583. the world,

  584. but that

  585. you protect

  586. them from

  587. the evil

  588. one.

  589. What is

  590. the difference

  591. between sorrow

  592. and gloom?

  593. Pain and

  594. discouragement,

  595. or temptation

  596. and sin?

  597. The differences

  598. are very

  599. similar.

  600. Feeling

  601. sad about

  602. something or

  603. some situation

  604. is one thing,

  605. but gloom

  606. is hopelessness,

  607. is giving

  608. hope.

  609. Feeling

  610. pain is

  611. a sign

  612. of growth

  613. and suffering

  614. will eventually

  615. make us

  616. stronger.

  617. However,

  618. discouragement

  619. only happens

  620. when someone

  621. gave up

  622. their courage,

  623. gave up

  624. their vision

  625. and focused

  626. on what

  627. is immediate.

  628. We may

  629. be tempted

  630. but not

  631. sin.

  632. To sin

  633. is a

  634. decision

  635. to let

  636. go of

  637. our

  638. true

  639. identity

  640. as the

  641. children

  642. of God

  643. and give

  644. in to

  645. the world.

  646. So,

  647. Jesus

  648. prayed

  649. these first

  650. things

  651. for them

  652. is for

  653. the

  654. disciples

  655. to be

  656. kept

  657. from

  658. evil.

  659. Second

  660. thing

  661. that

  662. Jesus

  663. prayed

  664. for

  665. this

  666. is

  667. his

  668. disciples

  669. may

  670. be

  671. sanctified

  672. in

  673. verse 17

  674. to 18.

  675. Sanctify

  676. them

  677. by the

  678. truth.

  679. Your

  680. word

  681. is

  682. truth.

  683. As

  684. you

  685. send

  686. me

  687. into

  688. the

  689. world,

  690. I

  691. have

  692. sent

  693. them

  694. into

  695. the

  696. world.

  697. In

  698. here,

  699. sanctification

  700. doesn't

  701. mean making

  702. them holy

  703. because the

  704. first part of

  705. the prayer

  706. already prayed

  707. for that.

  708. In

  709. here,

  710. sanctification

  711. means more

  712. about setting

  713. a path

  714. for service.

  715. Because in

  716. verse 18,

  717. it says,

  718. as you send

  719. me into

  720. the world,

  721. I have

  722. sent them

  723. into the

  724. world.

  725. the

  726. service

  727. that

  728. is

  729. required

  730. of

  731. Jesus'

  732. follower

  733. is

  734. witnessing

  735. to

  736. the

  737. truth

  738. to be

  739. Jesus'

  740. messenger,

  741. to testify

  742. to the

  743. truth.

  744. The

  745. truth of

  746. God,

  747. the

  748. word of

  749. God,

  750. will

  751. sanctify

  752. those

  753. who hear

  754. the message

  755. and believe

  756. in Jesus.

  757. And the

  758. final section

  759. of this

  760. chapter shows

  761. how Jesus

  762. prayed for

  763. all believers

  764. for the

  765. world.

  766. And the

  767. main focus

  768. is that

  769. all of

  770. them may

  771. be one,

  772. and that

  773. at last

  774. they may

  775. be with

  776. him in

  777. heavenly

  778. glory.

  779. The

  780. oneness

  781. that

  782. share

  783. among

  784. the

  785. Trinity,

  786. the

  787. three

  788. persons

  789. of God,

  790. the

  791. Father,

  792. Son,

  793. and Holy

  794. Spirit,

  795. is

  796. emphasized

  797. by

  798. Jesus'

  799. own

  800. word.

  801. In

  802. this

  803. last

  804. session,

  805. Jesus'

  806. father,

  807. just as

  808. you are

  809. in me

  810. and I

  811. am in

  812. you,

  813. I have

  814. given

  815. them

  816. the

  817. glory

  818. that

  819. you

  820. gave

  821. me,

  822. that

  823. they

  824. may

  825. be

  826. one

  827. as

  828. we

  829. are

  830. one,

  831. so

  832. that

  833. they

  834. may

  835. be

  836. brought

  837. to

  838. complete

  839. unity.

  840. Righteous

  841. Father,

  842. though the

  843. world does

  844. not know

  845. you,

  846. I know

  847. you.

  848. Theologian

  849. Charles

  850. Edmund

  851. says that

  852. the oneness

  853. mentioned in

  854. this

  855. chapter

  856. contemplates

  857. a

  858. spiritual

  859. unity,

  860. which must

  861. be given

  862. visible

  863. expression,

  864. by which

  865. in its

  866. essence

  867. consists of

  868. a union

  869. with Christ

  870. and through

  871. him with

  872. God.

  873. Jesus

  874. prayed for

  875. us,

  876. his followers,

  877. to be part of

  878. that unity

  879. that's shared

  880. among the

  881. Trinity,

  882. that loving

  883. relationship

  884. that is between

  885. the Father,

  886. the Son,

  887. and the Holy

  888. Spirit.

  889. if we

  890. look through

  891. this

  892. section,

  893. Jesus

  894. said this,

  895. may they

  896. also be

  897. in us,

  898. so that

  899. the world

  900. may believe

  901. that you

  902. have sent

  903. me.

  904. Then the

  905. world will

  906. know that

  907. you sent

  908. me and

  909. have loved

  910. them even

  911. as you

  912. have loved

  913. me.

  914. I have

  915. made you

  916. known to

  917. them and

  918. will continue

  919. to make

  920. you known

  921. in order

  922. that the

  923. love you

  924. have for

  925. me may

  926. be in

  927. them and

  928. that I

  929. myself may

  930. be in

  931. them.

  932. Christian

  933. exists to

  934. make Christ

  935. known to

  936. the world

  937. by the

  938. spiritual

  939. unity that

  940. we share

  941. with Christ

  942. and with

  943. our Father

  944. in Heaven.

  945. Becoming a

  946. Christian is

  947. not to have

  948. a better

  949. way of

  950. life or

  951. to give

  952. us a

  953. relief from

  954. the pain

  955. and sorrow

  956. and temptation

  957. and the

  958. trouble of

  959. the world.

  960. Christianity

  961. is not just

  962. another religion

  963. to try out.

  964. To be a

  965. follower of

  966. Christ is

  967. to participate

  968. into the

  969. oneness of

  970. God, to

  971. share the

  972. glory of

  973. God that

  974. existed before

  975. the beginning

  976. of the

  977. world and

  978. to make

  979. God known

  980. to the

  981. world through

  982. that

  983. participation.

  984. To know

  985. God and

  986. to have

  987. eternal life

  988. is to

  989. experience the

  990. presence of

  991. God and

  992. the heavenly

  993. blessedness in

  994. your day-to-day

  995. life, to

  996. use the

  997. glory that

  998. is given

  999. to you by

  1000. God to

  1001. glorify him.

  1002. Those that

  1003. have

  1004. understood and

  1005. accepted the

  1006. word of

  1007. God is

  1008. revealed by

  1009. Jesus.

  1010. Those that

  1011. have

  1012. understood and

  1013. accepted the

  1014. words of

  1015. God as

  1016. revealed by

  1017. Jesus, those

  1018. that make the

  1019. decision to

  1020. follow and

  1021. obey God's

  1022. word, knew

  1023. with certainty

  1024. that Jesus

  1025. comes from

  1026. God and

  1027. believe that

  1028. God sent

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. And also

  1031. are those

  1032. that through

  1033. whom glory

  1034. has come to

  1035. Jesus.

  1036. And they

  1037. will have the

  1038. full measure

  1039. of Jesus'

  1040. joy within

  1041. them.

  1042. And they

  1043. will also

  1044. experience the

  1045. opposition of

  1046. the world.

  1047. So now

  1048. this is

  1049. eternal life,

  1050. that they

  1051. know God,

  1052. the only

  1053. true God,

  1054. and Jesus

  1055. Christ,

  1056. whom God

  1057. has sent.

  1058. let's

  1059. pray.

  1060. Father,

  1061. thank you

  1062. so much

  1063. for sending

  1064. Jesus.

  1065. Thank you

  1066. so much

  1067. for Jesus'

  1068. obedience to

  1069. you,

  1070. that he's

  1071. willing to

  1072. reveal the

  1073. fullness of

  1074. you to

  1075. us,

  1076. that he

  1077. has protected

  1078. us while

  1079. we're on

  1080. earth,

  1081. and now

  1082. he has

  1083. sent the

  1084. Holy Spirit

  1085. to guide

  1086. us,

  1087. to live

  1088. our life,

  1089. that you

  1090. want us

  1091. to live.

  1092. God,

  1093. thank you

  1094. so much

  1095. that you

  1096. have called

  1097. us to

  1098. be your

  1099. follower,

  1100. to be your

  1101. children,

  1102. that you

  1103. didn't cut

  1104. our sin

  1105. against us,

  1106. but you

  1107. have gave

  1108. us eternal

  1109. life.

  1110. You gave

  1111. us a way

  1112. to know

  1113. you through

  1114. Jesus,

  1115. to learn

  1116. about you

  1117. through your

  1118. word.

  1119. You also

  1120. give us

  1121. the ability,

  1122. the strength

  1123. to carry out

  1124. your will,

  1125. God,

  1126. help us

  1127. to really

  1128. truly

  1129. understand

  1130. what it

  1131. means to

  1132. have a

  1133. relationship

  1134. with you.

  1135. Help us

  1136. to not

  1137. just live

  1138. our religious

  1139. life,

  1140. but really

  1141. live our

  1142. a true

  1143. Christian

  1144. life,

  1145. that is

  1146. enjoying a

  1147. daily

  1148. relationship

  1149. with the

  1150. hope of

  1151. future

  1152. heavenly

  1153. life,

  1154. and live

  1155. our life

  1156. in faith

  1157. according to

  1158. your word.

  1159. Thank you

  1160. so much

  1161. for what

  1162. you have

  1163. done for

  1164. us.

  1165. In a

  1166. prayer of

  1167. this,

  1168. amen.
