  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Nick asked us earlier about what you give thanks to God for in the past week.

  3. And I got a message the other day from someone who was sitting in church last week

  4. who, as a result of being convicted in terms of the message,

  5. but also blown away by the gospel, decided to basically quadruple their giving.

  6. And I just want to say that that's what this series is about.

  7. It's about heart work.

  8. It's about doing...

  9. We're not seeking to raise funds for any particular project,

  10. but to do heart work as one of the things that is closest to our hearts

  11. in a materialistic world,

  12. and to sort of rethink about that from a kingdom of God perspective.

  13. That's what we're seeking to do in this series.

  14. So if you'd like to come with me today, which would be great,

  15. you've got an outline here with the Bible verses,

  16. but also an outline in terms of where we're heading with this passage.

  17. We could take some notes, but also on the St. Paul's app,

  18. you can get the same thing and type it all in as well.

  19. Let me pray, and then we'll launch into this text.

  20. Gracious Father, we thank you for the abundance that you have given us in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  21. As we have sung this morning already,

  22. in him we can be satisfied, totally satisfied.

  23. As your prophet Habakkuk says,

  24. that all other things can be stripped away,

  25. but because we have Christ, we have God, our Redeemer,

  26. then we have everything,

  27. everything that we need to get out of bed in the morning and rejoice.

  28. Help us to put our materialism, our money, our resources,

  29. all good things that come from you in their proper place.

  30. We ask that you would do heart work with us,

  31. which would see transformation in our lives and our priorities, we pray.

  32. In Jesus' name.

  33. Amen.

  34. I want to begin today, as I've done a few times before,

  35. reflecting on the life of one of the greatest philosophical thinkers,

  36. one of the sharpest political minds,

  37. one of the most gifted artists and one of the most quoted individuals of the past 100 years.

  38. Arnold Schwarzenegger was born the son of a low-ranking Austrian police officer

  39. and destined for a life of total obscurity, in fact,

  40. until his hands wrapped around a barbell for the very first time at 14 years of age.

  41. By the age of 18, he was living in London,

  42. travelling the world, competing in bodybuilding championships,

  43. and his coach through those years was a guy named Wag Bennett.

  44. And one day, Wag asked the 18-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger,

  45. what do you want to do with your life?

  46. And he said Arnold's response for an 18-year-old was remarkable.

  47. He said he just looked at me and said,

  48. I want to be the richest and the greatest bodybuilder of all time.

  49. I want to live in the United States.

  50. I want to be an actor, a movie director,

  51. own an apartment block,

  52. and dabble in politics.

  53. 18 years of age.

  54. This is my future.

  55. This is what I'm gunning for,

  56. and I'm going to go for it.

  57. And those who trained with him said he was highly focused.

  58. Highly focused.

  59. One day he was doing some sort of press-up thingy

  60. with one of his training partners,

  61. and this training partner beat Arnold.

  62. He did 150,

  63. and Arnold did 149,

  64. or something like that.

  65. And Arnold looked at him and said,

  66. you will never,

  67. ever beat me again.

  68. He said,

  69. no matter what I did,

  70. I couldn't do it.

  71. So focused.

  72. Luke 16.

  73. Jesus tells a story about a man who saw the future.

  74. He knew what he wanted,

  75. knew what he wanted to do,

  76. what he needed to do,

  77. and he just went for it.

  78. He's known as the shrewd manager.

  79. Now,

  80. in Jesus' time,

  81. the manager like this

  82. was like a COO,

  83. a chief operating officer,

  84. and a CFO,

  85. a chief financial officer,

  86. rolled into one.

  87. They not only managed

  88. the whole estate

  89. for an owner of an estate,

  90. but they also invested the owner's money.

  91. They had control over the finances

  92. and chose where it was going to be spent.

  93. And it turns out,

  94. according to this text,

  95. that this manager's been doing a pretty poor job,

  96. and so he gets a termination notice,

  97. and he's now in trouble.

  98. Word gets around that this manager

  99. has not been making some wise decisions,

  100. then it's unlikely that he's going to get

  101. another management role.

  102. And he's been sitting in an office for too long

  103. to start digging trenches for a living,

  104. and he won't lower himself to begging.

  105. And what's more,

  106. there are no social services.

  107. There's nothing here in terms of

  108. center link to fall back on.

  109. So for this manager,

  110. in this moment,

  111. he has a life and death decision.

  112. How's he going to live?

  113. What's he going to do?

  114. And so he makes a decision

  115. in that moment

  116. that will pay benefits for him

  117. into the future.

  118. Not immediately,

  119. into the future.

  120. And that's the point of this parable.

  121. Living now,

  122. making decisions now,

  123. that have long-term benefits.

  124. And what he does next

  125. is the bit of this parable

  126. that I think,

  127. if you get caught up in the details,

  128. gets a little bit distracting.

  129. So here it is,

  130. verse 5.

  131. So he called in each one

  132. of his master's debtors.

  133. He asked the first,

  134. how much do you owe my master?

  135. 900 gallons of olive oil,

  136. he replied.

  137. The manager told him,

  138. take your bill,

  139. sit down quickly,

  140. and make it 450.

  141. Then he asked the second,

  142. and how much do you owe?

  143. A thousand bushels of wheat,

  144. he replied.

  145. He told him,

  146. take your bill,

  147. and make it 800.

  148. Now the distracting bit is,

  149. you're working on the assumption here,

  150. that this manager,

  151. is ripping off his master.

  152. You pay me the money.

  153. You give me 450 gallons of olive oil.

  154. That's not really what's happening.

  155. But what happens here is,

  156. what's the crucial focal point,

  157. is the outcome of his actions

  158. creates friendships

  159. that didn't exist before.

  160. He now has connections and friendships

  161. that didn't exist before.

  162. In acting for the future,

  163. he won the favor and the obligation

  164. of his master's debtors.

  165. And the master's response,

  166. in verse 8,

  167. is,

  168. the master commended the dishonest manager

  169. because he had acted shrewdly.

  170. Why would the owner commend the manager

  171. for his action here?

  172. One of the best theories

  173. is that this manager

  174. was putting his own fees

  175. on top of the investment,

  176. getting his own interest share in it

  177. as well as the owner of the investment.

  178. And this could be the reason

  179. why he's been called dishonest

  180. in the beginning.

  181. You are putting extraordinary fees

  182. on top of my assets

  183. and getting a cut yourself.

  184. So he's entering into contracts here

  185. with very high interest.

  186. So the master's getting interest

  187. and the owner's getting interest

  188. and then it all gets found out.

  189. And so what apparently he's done here

  190. is he's now all of a sudden

  191. taking his own cut out of it.

  192. He's not getting anything more

  193. from these deals.

  194. Takes his own fees out.

  195. Not only does he make his debtors happy,

  196. but he also gives the master

  197. a better name in town too.

  198. Now that's,

  199. well that's exactly how it worked,

  200. but it appears that that's how it worked

  201. in the first century Palestine.

  202. But the point of Jesus here is

  203. that this man

  204. is living his life

  205. and using his wealth

  206. with an eye for the future.

  207. This master commended him

  208. because he had acted shrewdly.

  209. It was a good decision.

  210. You've made a wise decision,

  211. a smart judgment.

  212. You're astute.

  213. Or what we might call a rat cunning.

  214. Very, very clever move.

  215. But the rebuke in the second half

  216. of verse 8

  217. is a little bit stinging.

  218. It says this shrewd,

  219. this wise,

  220. this astute action

  221. is one that the disciples

  222. of Jesus fail in.

  223. For the people of this world

  224. are more shrewd

  225. in dealing with their own kind

  226. or with their own generation

  227. than are people of the light.

  228. Jesus is saying

  229. that this manager

  230. is wiser

  231. in the use

  232. of the master's wealth

  233. than his own disciples

  234. are in using

  235. their master's wealth.

  236. in making long-term investment

  237. with their master's wealth.

  238. And that's my second point.

  239. We are God's investment managers.

  240. That's the first thing

  241. we learn here.

  242. We are stewards

  243. of someone else's resources.

  244. The word manager here

  245. is quite literally steward.

  246. This man

  247. is a steward

  248. of someone else's resources.

  249. He is a fund manager

  250. if you like.

  251. When you manage

  252. someone else's funds

  253. you can't do

  254. anything you want

  255. with it

  256. because

  257. it's not yours.

  258. You don't own it.

  259. So first up

  260. Jesus is saying

  261. that if you understand

  262. that there is a God

  263. at all

  264. you've got any concept

  265. that there is a God

  266. you will know

  267. that whatever you have

  268. is not yours.

  269. We are stewards

  270. of God's money

  271. of his resources

  272. and so

  273. we are

  274. stop acting

  275. as if it's ours.

  276. That's pretty hard hitting

  277. because we have

  278. a strong attachment

  279. to our wealth

  280. and our possessions

  281. because we've worked for it.

  282. We have this sense

  283. in the materialistic wealth

  284. of the West

  285. that we believe

  286. in the self-made individual.

  287. It's my money.

  288. I've worked hard for it.

  289. I've worked really hard.

  290. I deserve this

  291. because I work really hard.

  292. How often have you heard

  293. your self

  294. say that?

  295. Jesus says

  296. no.

  297. That's not yours.

  298. If you're a Christian

  299. there is a much broader context

  300. to put all

  301. of this truth into.

  302. As Christians

  303. we believe

  304. that God made everything

  305. that he sustains everything

  306. that we have life

  307. and skills

  308. and opportunities

  309. that he has gifted us with

  310. and without those things

  311. we would not make

  312. any money

  313. at all.

  314. It's not because of us

  315. it's because of him.

  316. Let me just push this point

  317. a little bit further.

  318. It is a gift

  319. that you happen to exist

  320. in Sydney

  321. at this particular time and age.

  322. Absolute gift.

  323. you would understand

  324. it as a gift

  325. if you were born

  326. 400 years ago

  327. and living in a

  328. third world country.

  329. Without the gifts

  330. we have no capability

  331. of doing what we do.

  332. Without the life

  333. that he gives us

  334. day by day

  335. we have no ability

  336. to have any form

  337. of possessions.

  338. Without life

  339. it's extremely difficult

  340. to do anything in fact.

  341. If you have health

  342. and able to work

  343. that's a gift.

  344. The fact that you're born

  345. in this time and place

  346. have these opportunities

  347. those are gifts.

  348. We work hard

  349. for what we have

  350. with the life

  351. circumstances

  352. talents

  353. that God has given us

  354. we are stewards.

  355. And I think

  356. that's where

  357. 1 Chronicles 29

  358. is really helpful

  359. for us

  360. because this is

  361. the prayer

  362. of the fabulously

  363. wealthy and powerful

  364. King David.

  365. Everything in heaven

  366. and earth

  367. is yours.

  368. Wealth

  369. and honour

  370. come from you.

  371. You are the ruler

  372. of all things.

  373. Who am I?

  374. And who are my people

  375. that we should be able

  376. to give as generously

  377. as this?

  378. Everything

  379. comes from you

  380. and we have only

  381. given to you

  382. what has come

  383. from your hand.

  384. All this abundance

  385. that we have provided

  386. for building you

  387. a temple

  388. for your holy name

  389. comes from your hand

  390. and all of it

  391. belongs to you

  392. still belongs to you.

  393. So if we are stewards

  394. it's not ours

  395. and God calls us

  396. to be radically generous.

  397. And if we're not

  398. radically generous

  399. it's not called

  400. stinginess

  401. or a little bit

  402. tight.

  403. God calls it

  404. robbery.

  405. You're a fund manager

  406. who's taking the funds

  407. and investing it

  408. elsewhere.

  409. You're the dishonest

  410. manager

  411. is what you are.

  412. It's not just a lack

  413. of compassion.

  414. It's not just a lack

  415. of generosity.

  416. It's a lack

  417. of integrity.

  418. Malachi 3.8

  419. Will a mere mortal

  420. rob God?

  421. And yet you

  422. rob me.

  423. But you ask

  424. well how are we

  425. robbing you God?

  426. In tithes and offerings.

  427. As I said last week

  428. the people of the

  429. Old Testament

  430. were told that

  431. 10% of their income

  432. as a baseline

  433. need to be given away.

  434. That's the starting point.

  435. That's the baseline.

  436. And I'm not convinced

  437. the standards of the

  438. people in the New

  439. Testament are any

  440. lower.

  441. Especially when they

  442. have a greater hope

  443. a greater revelation

  444. a greater grace

  445. greater benefit.

  446. However

  447. if you're sitting

  448. there at the moment

  449. you're thinking

  450. 10%

  451. is a lot of money

  452. then maybe

  453. you're approaching

  454. it from the wrong

  455. direction.

  456. Imagine

  457. imagine this scenario

  458. you go to work

  459. on Tuesday

  460. and

  461. someone

  462. asks you

  463. to manage

  464. their money

  465. for them

  466. and the

  467. terms

  468. of that

  469. were that

  470. every year

  471. you get

  472. to keep

  473. 90%

  474. of the returns

  475. and you've

  476. got to give

  477. the owner

  478. 10% back.

  479. Do you

  480. think that's

  481. a good deal?

  482. What fund

  483. manager wouldn't

  484. want to sign

  485. on the dotted

  486. line ASN?

  487. You immediately

  488. go

  489. there's got to

  490. be fine print

  491. here somewhere.

  492. There must

  493. be fine print

  494. here somewhere.

  495. That's how

  496. generous God

  497. is

  498. and that's

  499. what God

  500. is offering

  501. us.

  502. But if we

  503. love money

  504. more than

  505. we love God

  506. who gives

  507. us those

  508. things

  509. even those

  510. terms won't

  511. be enough.

  512. We won't

  513. be generous

  514. we won't

  515. give

  516. and it won't

  517. be stinginess

  518. it's robbery.

  519. We are stewards

  520. of money

  521. that is

  522. not

  523. ours.

  524. And I

  525. would suggest

  526. I want to

  527. go a little

  528. bit harder

  529. here and I

  530. would suggest

  531. that includes

  532. the estates

  533. that you've

  534. accumulated

  535. over the

  536. years.

  537. I want to

  538. ask whether

  539. even in

  540. your will

  541. have you

  542. included for

  543. gospel ministry

  544. after you

  545. have long

  546. gone.

  547. Even the

  548. estates that

  549. are in

  550. your name

  551. are not

  552. yours.

  553. Imagine

  554. stewarding

  555. our resources

  556. in such a

  557. way that

  558. in our

  559. wills

  560. we are

  561. also

  562. giving a

  563. portion to

  564. gospel ministry

  565. and charity

  566. after we

  567. have long

  568. gone.

  569. Imagine

  570. continuing to

  571. build rewards

  572. in heaven

  573. when we are

  574. already there.

  575. Next point

  576. investing in

  577. friends.

  578. There's

  579. something even

  580. more amazing

  581. here.

  582. This is the

  583. connection between

  584. wealth and

  585. love.

  586. Verse 9

  587. is the

  588. goal Jesus

  589. has in

  590. mind with

  591. our stewardship

  592. of his

  593. resources and

  594. the goal

  595. is our

  596. happiness,

  597. our love

  598. and our

  599. security.

  600. I tell you

  601. use worldly

  602. wealth to

  603. gain friends

  604. for yourselves

  605. so that when

  606. it is gone

  607. you will be

  608. welcomed into

  609. eternal dwellings.

  610. See what this

  611. manager does

  612. here which is

  613. the astute

  614. wise thinking

  615. is he puts

  616. aside short

  617. term financial

  618. gain for the

  619. sake of gaining

  620. something that

  621. was long term

  622. more valuable.

  623. It's a wise

  624. investment is

  625. where you put

  626. your money into

  627. something that

  628. will increase in

  629. value.

  630. That's called a

  631. wise investment.

  632. And so what can

  633. we put our money

  634. into that will

  635. last forever?

  636. Jesus gives

  637. us a very

  638. helpful perspective

  639. here when he

  640. says in verse

  641. nine so that

  642. when it is

  643. gone.

  644. He's saying

  645. that no matter

  646. what investment

  647. you put into

  648. in this world

  649. it will go.

  650. It will not

  651. last.

  652. You won't take

  653. it with you.

  654. There is no

  655. material thing,

  656. no asset,

  657. no piece of

  658. property where

  659. you can put

  660. your money

  661. into that

  662. will really

  663. really really

  664. last.

  665. And he's

  666. calling his

  667. disciples to

  668. put their

  669. money into

  670. something that

  671. will literally

  672. last forever.

  673. Use your

  674. money in such

  675. a way that

  676. there is glory

  677. in the end.

  678. need.

  679. Now what I

  680. love about the

  681. way that Jesus

  682. puts it here

  683. is that he

  684. doesn't say,

  685. he doesn't just

  686. stay there at

  687. some sort of

  688. abstract level.

  689. Now because for

  690. me personally I'm

  691. logically convinced

  692. I'm just kind of

  693. the way that I'm

  694. wired I think

  695. long term about

  696. most stuff.

  697. And I'm

  698. logically convinced

  699. by the argument

  700. for long term

  701. investment that

  702. grows in value

  703. forever.

  704. Logically,

  705. yeah got that,

  706. that makes sense

  707. to me.

  708. What Jesus

  709. says next

  710. however is

  711. the thing that

  712. if you like

  713. moves the

  714. heart and

  715. causes me to

  716. open the

  717. wallet and the

  718. bank balance.

  719. And I hope it

  720. does for you

  721. too.

  722. Look at how

  723. Jesus describes

  724. the eternal

  725. dwelling in

  726. verse 9.

  727. friends.

  728. Friends.

  729. Use your money

  730. now to gain

  731. friends who

  732. will welcome

  733. you into

  734. eternal

  735. dwellings.

  736. Let me quote

  737. one commentator

  738. who wrote on

  739. this verse.

  740. It is in his

  741. view the main

  742. point of this

  743. parable.

  744. although these

  745. things,

  746. your property,

  747. ability,

  748. time,

  749. belong to

  750. this life

  751. only,

  752. says Jesus,

  753. yet what

  754. will happen

  755. to you

  756. then when

  757. you pass

  758. into that

  759. life will

  760. depend on

  761. what you

  762. are doing

  763. with them

  764. here and

  765. now.

  766. Make sure

  767. that your

  768. use of

  769. them brings

  770. you into

  771. a fellowship

  772. of friends

  773. which will

  774. survive

  775. beyond

  776. death.

  777. A

  778. fellowship

  779. of

  780. friends

  781. that

  782. survives

  783. beyond

  784. death.

  785. Now this

  786. is definitely

  787. what Jesus

  788. is saying

  789. here.

  790. You see,

  791. because we

  792. look to

  793. money to

  794. give us

  795. the security

  796. and the

  797. significance

  798. in our

  799. culture,

  800. but genuine

  801. security and

  802. significance

  803. is relational.

  804. It's not

  805. material.

  806. In the

  807. end,

  808. the thing

  809. we all

  810. need is

  811. love.

  812. Every

  813. single one

  814. of us

  815. needs

  816. love.

  817. We feel

  818. truly

  819. wealthy

  820. when we

  821. are loving

  822. people and

  823. are surrounded

  824. by people

  825. who love

  826. us back.

  827. The person

  828. who has

  829. got great

  830. bank balance,

  831. got a

  832. secure piece

  833. of property,

  834. they got

  835. their retirement

  836. funds sorted,

  837. but is

  838. totally lonely,

  839. doesn't think

  840. for a

  841. moment,

  842. that they're

  843. wealthy,

  844. when all

  845. the relationships

  846. around them

  847. are breaking

  848. down.

  849. And yet,

  850. the love

  851. that we're

  852. seeking for

  853. in this

  854. life is

  855. consistently

  856. out of

  857. reach for

  858. us.

  859. Money can't

  860. buy you

  861. love.

  862. love.

  863. You can

  864. get a

  865. taste of

  866. the love

  867. we're

  868. searching

  869. for in

  870. this

  871. world,

  872. but the

  873. best is

  874. yet to

  875. come.

  876. That's

  877. what Jesus

  878. promises.

  879. The

  880. thinking that

  881. heaven is a

  882. place of

  883. harps and

  884. crowns and

  885. clouds and

  886. gold doesn't

  887. kind of move

  888. me so much

  889. in terms of

  890. wanting to be

  891. there as a

  892. world of love

  893. does.

  894. Heaven is a

  895. place of

  896. friendships,

  897. a place of

  898. deep

  899. relationships,

  900. a place of

  901. real love,

  902. a place where

  903. we love and

  904. we are loved

  905. without any

  906. barriers at

  907. all.

  908. It's a place

  909. to really hope

  910. for and invest

  911. in now.

  912. The love we

  913. experience in

  914. this world is

  915. a foretaste

  916. of what will

  917. be, but it

  918. falls way short

  919. of what it

  920. will be in

  921. heaven.

  922. Love now is

  923. all too often

  924. a source of

  925. pain.

  926. There are

  927. barriers of

  928. loving and

  929. being loved

  930. in this world

  931. that won't

  932. exist in

  933. heaven and

  934. that makes

  935. heaven an

  936. incredible

  937. prospect.

  938. I've got a

  939. list of a

  940. variety of

  941. barriers that

  942. we have now

  943. for love.

  944. One barrier

  945. that we face

  946. now that we

  947. want them is

  948. that we are

  949. often not

  950. loved for our

  951. own sake in

  952. this world,

  953. which the

  954. person who

  955. has got more

  956. and more

  957. possessions and

  958. wealth always

  959. has in the

  960. back of their

  961. mind.

  962. Am I being

  963. loved because

  964. of what I

  965. have or

  966. because of

  967. who I am?

  968. It's painful

  969. when we discover

  970. that people are

  971. not loving us

  972. for our own

  973. sake, but

  974. actually using

  975. us to get to

  976. something else

  977. or to someone

  978. else.

  979. It's very rare

  980. for any of us

  981. to love another

  982. person totally

  983. for their own

  984. sake.

  985. Most love in

  986. order to get

  987. something.

  988. In heaven we

  989. will be loved

  990. absolutely and

  991. completely and

  992. fully for who

  993. we are.

  994. Another barrier

  995. is the inability

  996. to express love

  997. without hindrance,

  998. pride,

  999. selfishness,

  1000. defensiveness,

  1001. pettiness,

  1002. coldness,

  1003. means that we

  1004. can't do it.

  1005. This is even

  1006. the case with

  1007. those who we

  1008. are the closest

  1009. to in this

  1010. world.

  1011. It's like having

  1012. an ocean of

  1013. love in the

  1014. heart that it

  1015. can only get

  1016. expressed through

  1017. a straw.

  1018. We can't

  1019. even get

  1020. close to

  1021. expressing our

  1022. love fully

  1023. without hindrance.

  1024. But in

  1025. heaven we

  1026. will love

  1027. without impediment.

  1028. All sin,

  1029. all pride,

  1030. all selfishness,

  1031. pettiness,

  1032. defensiveness will

  1033. be gone.

  1034. We also

  1035. struggle to

  1036. find a mutual

  1037. love in this

  1038. world.

  1039. Is there

  1040. anything more

  1041. painful than

  1042. to love

  1043. someone and

  1044. not to be

  1045. loved back?

  1046. It's very

  1047. rare for love

  1048. to be mutual

  1049. at the same

  1050. time.

  1051. In this

  1052. life,

  1053. many of

  1054. the people

  1055. that we

  1056. love,

  1057. we love

  1058. them more

  1059. than they

  1060. in fact

  1061. love us

  1062. back.

  1063. That is

  1064. nothing but

  1065. pain.

  1066. But in

  1067. heaven everyone

  1068. will love

  1069. everyone else

  1070. mutually and

  1071. fully.

  1072. There's also

  1073. the barrier

  1074. of the

  1075. happiness of

  1076. those that

  1077. you love.

  1078. Think about

  1079. this for a

  1080. moment.

  1081. Once you

  1082. start,

  1083. and if you're

  1084. a parent,

  1085. you'll know

  1086. this,

  1087. once you

  1088. start having

  1089. children,

  1090. for the

  1091. rest of

  1092. your life,

  1093. you are

  1094. no more

  1095. happier than

  1096. your unhappiest

  1097. child.

  1098. Well,

  1099. there's an

  1100. incentive to

  1101. have kids.

  1102. But you get

  1103. that,

  1104. don't you?

  1105. You're no

  1106. more happier

  1107. than your

  1108. unhappiest

  1109. child.

  1110. We can

  1111. never be any

  1112. happier than

  1113. the people that

  1114. we love,

  1115. and that's

  1116. the reason

  1117. why most

  1118. of us are

  1119. so miserable.

  1120. Their heart

  1121. becomes our

  1122. heart.

  1123. If you

  1124. love more

  1125. than five

  1126. people in

  1127. your life

  1128. at any

  1129. one time,

  1130. you're bound

  1131. to be

  1132. miserable.

  1133. Someone's

  1134. going to be

  1135. unhappy.

  1136. The great

  1137. C.S.

  1138. Lewis said,

  1139. if you

  1140. don't want

  1141. your heart

  1142. to be

  1143. broken,

  1144. then just

  1145. stop loving

  1146. people.

  1147. Maybe you

  1148. know those

  1149. kinds of

  1150. people who

  1151. have got

  1152. that happening

  1153. for them.

  1154. That is the

  1155. only option,

  1156. and some

  1157. of us,

  1158. in fact,

  1159. find it so

  1160. difficult to

  1161. love anyone

  1162. because we

  1163. are so

  1164. broken in

  1165. our hearts

  1166. inside.

  1167. We are so

  1168. damaged.

  1169. And of

  1170. course,

  1171. you become

  1172. a hard

  1173. person,

  1174. and let

  1175. me say

  1176. it clearly,

  1177. you are

  1178. right on

  1179. your way

  1180. to hell.

  1181. Love is

  1182. such a

  1183. source of

  1184. pain,

  1185. but not

  1186. in heaven.

  1187. Everyone

  1188. will be

  1189. perfectly

  1190. happy and

  1191. filled with

  1192. a never

  1193. ceasing

  1194. joy.

  1195. The

  1196. greatest

  1197. barrier to

  1198. love would

  1199. have to be

  1200. the separation.

  1201. We want

  1202. a love

  1203. where we

  1204. will never

  1205. be separated

  1206. from the

  1207. people that

  1208. we love.

  1209. It is

  1210. painful knowing

  1211. that when

  1212. you marry

  1213. someone,

  1214. it is

  1215. highly likely

  1216. that one

  1217. of you

  1218. will bury

  1219. the other.

  1220. In my

  1221. case,

  1222. I've got

  1223. five people

  1224. sitting around

  1225. the table

  1226. at home,

  1227. and it's

  1228. highly likely

  1229. that one

  1230. of us

  1231. will be

  1232. sitting at

  1233. that table,

  1234. will see

  1235. everyone else

  1236. dead and

  1237. gone.

  1238. One of us

  1239. will be put

  1240. in that

  1241. position.

  1242. And as

  1243. a type

  1244. one

  1245. diabetic,

  1246. it's

  1247. unlikely

  1248. to be

  1249. me.

  1250. I think.

  1251. That's

  1252. my mother's

  1253. experience in

  1254. the last

  1255. couple of

  1256. years.

  1257. One of

  1258. four

  1259. sisters,

  1260. all gone,

  1261. only one

  1262. left.

  1263. And that's

  1264. the way of

  1265. our relationships

  1266. here,

  1267. love.

  1268. But not

  1269. there.

  1270. Not

  1271. there.

  1272. We are

  1273. made to

  1274. desire the

  1275. kind of

  1276. relationships,

  1277. friendships,

  1278. and love

  1279. that is in

  1280. the kingdom

  1281. of God.

  1282. We have

  1283. been designed

  1284. for what

  1285. Jesus says

  1286. heaven is

  1287. going to be

  1288. like,

  1289. knowing and

  1290. experiencing the

  1291. pain of

  1292. relationships in

  1293. this world.

  1294. It is hard

  1295. for us to

  1296. imagine it,

  1297. hard to

  1298. believe in

  1299. fact.

  1300. Just imagine

  1301. what it would

  1302. be like to

  1303. completely believe

  1304. in it,

  1305. though,

  1306. that that

  1307. is what

  1308. heaven is

  1309. going to

  1310. be like.

  1311. That is

  1312. my future.

  1313. Imagine what

  1314. it will do

  1315. to your

  1316. life day

  1317. by day

  1318. when you

  1319. grasp that

  1320. that is

  1321. the joy

  1322. and the

  1323. reality that

  1324. I'm

  1325. shooting for.

  1326. Imagine what

  1327. it would be

  1328. like to be

  1329. completely sure

  1330. of the future

  1331. because of

  1332. Jesus Christ

  1333. and what

  1334. he's done.

  1335. Imagine that

  1336. to believe

  1337. in Jesus

  1338. is to be

  1339. able to

  1340. live with

  1341. God and

  1342. friends in

  1343. absolute

  1344. perfection,

  1345. perfect love

  1346. forever,

  1347. love without

  1348. any boundaries

  1349. forever.

  1350. Just imagine

  1351. what it will

  1352. do with the

  1353. way you

  1354. live now.

  1355. Imagine what

  1356. it will do

  1357. to your

  1358. possessions

  1359. and your

  1360. money.

  1361. Knowing that

  1362. real,

  1363. what really

  1364. lasts is

  1365. love,

  1366. people,

  1367. relationships,

  1368. friends,

  1369. do not

  1370. put your

  1371. money

  1372. before people

  1373. which is

  1374. what our

  1375. materialistic

  1376. society says

  1377. you must

  1378. do.

  1379. Put your

  1380. money into

  1381. solving people's

  1382. needs.

  1383. Use your

  1384. money to

  1385. create a

  1386. fellowship of

  1387. friends that

  1388. will survive

  1389. beyond death.

  1390. love.

  1391. When people

  1392. find hope and

  1393. love and

  1394. faith in

  1395. Jesus,

  1396. they will

  1397. be your

  1398. friends forever.

  1399. They will

  1400. love you

  1401. and be loved

  1402. by you

  1403. without any

  1404. barrier.

  1405. That's the

  1406. radical investment

  1407. that Jesus is

  1408. calling us

  1409. to.

  1410. To put the

  1411. money that

  1412. you are a

  1413. steward of

  1414. into connecting

  1415. people with

  1416. their God

  1417. who loves

  1418. them in a

  1419. way that

  1420. is incomprehensible

  1421. to them.

  1422. Now all of

  1423. this hope

  1424. and joy

  1425. is possible

  1426. because we

  1427. ourselves are

  1428. recipients of

  1429. this ultimate

  1430. love and

  1431. friendship.

  1432. In

  1433. 1 Corinthians

  1434. 8,

  1435. the Apostle

  1436. Paul is

  1437. encouraging the

  1438. church in

  1439. Corinth to

  1440. give generously

  1441. to a great

  1442. need in the

  1443. same way that

  1444. other churches

  1445. had done.

  1446. And he

  1447. doesn't order

  1448. them to do

  1449. it.

  1450. He showed

  1451. them how

  1452. they can do

  1453. it.

  1454. And what he

  1455. does is he

  1456. shows them

  1457. love.

  1458. He says

  1459. just think

  1460. about Jesus.

  1461. Think about

  1462. Jesus Christ

  1463. that though

  1464. he was rich

  1465. yet for

  1466. your sake

  1467. he became

  1468. poor.

  1469. He divested

  1470. himself of

  1471. everything so

  1472. that you

  1473. through his

  1474. action of

  1475. diversity

  1476. himself of

  1477. everything that

  1478. you might

  1479. become rich.

  1480. You might

  1481. know true

  1482. wealth.

  1483. You might

  1484. know love

  1485. without barriers.

  1486. Jesus is the

  1487. one friend who

  1488. emptied himself

  1489. of everything to

  1490. turn his

  1491. enemies into

  1492. his friends.

  1493. Jesus is the

  1494. true steward.

  1495. As

  1496. recipients of

  1497. the ultimate

  1498. friendship we

  1499. get to live

  1500. with him

  1501. forever in

  1502. perfect love

  1503. and he's

  1504. calling us

  1505. here in

  1506. this passage

  1507. to use your

  1508. money in a

  1509. way that is

  1510. controlled by

  1511. that knowledge.

  1512. So friends

  1513. right now

  1514. right now

  1515. you and I

  1516. sitting in this

  1517. room while we

  1518. have breath in

  1519. our lungs

  1520. we're in

  1521. exactly the

  1522. same boat

  1523. as the

  1524. shrewd

  1525. manager when

  1526. he got his

  1527. termination

  1528. notice.

  1529. The books

  1530. are still

  1531. open and

  1532. you've still

  1533. got a chance

  1534. to act right

  1535. now in view

  1536. of the future.

  1537. make your

  1538. eternal joy

  1539. complete and

  1540. invest in

  1541. eternal

  1542. friends.
