  1. she had fallen at the last hurdle.

  2. She had trained for so long,

  3. so many hours of hard work,

  4. so many late nights, long days,

  5. being exhausted in body and in mind,

  6. missing out on friends, on fun,

  7. all because she had a goal in mind.

  8. And now hardship had come,

  9. and it was all too much.

  10. Was it time to let go of that goal?

  11. Was she going to let her family down?

  12. As I was describing a situation,

  13. what kind of image came to mind?

  14. This is not a rhetorical question.

  15. Anybody want to throw out anything?

  16. What kind of situation were you imagining?

  17. Sorry, Janet, I didn't hear you.

  18. Dear sister.

  19. A sports person?

  20. Sports person?

  21. You can imagine a sports person,

  22. they've got a goal in mind,

  23. they're going to run a marathon,

  24. they've been training for this event,

  25. 42Ks is a long way,

  26. and a person training for an event like this,

  27. they make choices not to spend time on certain things,

  28. they watch out for distractions,

  29. but then a hardship like an injury could hit.

  30. What other things were you imagining?

  31. Anyone?

  32. Maybe someone preparing for an exam,

  33. training hard, working hard,

  34. pursuing marks to get into a university.

  35. Are you remembering when you worked hard

  36. to get where you are today?

  37. You know, there's that goal,

  38. and so everything else goes out the window.

  39. Exercise, friends, social time,

  40. the only choice is to study hard or work hard.

  41. But right at the end,

  42. a hardship like stress under pressure can hit.

  43. Hardships and difficult moments like this,

  44. they break people.

  45. You see injuries to professional sports people,

  46. they make people retire early.

  47. I've seen people change their university degrees

  48. because it just became too hard.

  49. I see the amount of half-started projects

  50. around my house.

  51. There's a towel rack I haven't finished replacing.

  52. There's a broken kitchen cupboard I need to fix.

  53. Because at one point or another,

  54. they just get hard.

  55. The author of the letter to the Hebrews

  56. describes the Christian life like this.

  57. It's been our slogan in that video we've been watching,

  58. you know, with Liv running.

  59. The author to the Hebrews describes this Christian life

  60. as a race.

  61. God has chosen people for him through his grace,

  62. and now we run towards him.

  63. Being with Christ and becoming like him,

  64. that is the goal that we run towards.

  65. And on the way,

  66. we have plenty of choices to make.

  67. Choices to follow him,

  68. and not to just chase our own desires.

  69. We must watch out for sin,

  70. being aware of the dangers around us.

  71. And as we run this race,

  72. there will be hardships.

  73. These hardships are different

  74. to getting a broken leg from a race.

  75. But as we pursue different goals,

  76. hardships might break us

  77. and make us finish early.

  78. Or will the hardship

  79. push us on to the prize?

  80. But what's the point of hardships

  81. and difficulty

  82. as we follow Jesus?

  83. How do we deal with frustrations and sin?

  84. Do we just say,

  85. come on James,

  86. you'll be fine,

  87. brush yourself off,

  88. Jesus loves you.

  89. And is that all that we do with hardships?

  90. How do we view hard times

  91. as Christians?

  92. Today,

  93. as we finish our series

  94. on the disciplines of grace,

  95. we're going to see how

  96. God encourages us

  97. when hardship and difficult times hit.

  98. So please pray with me.

  99. Heavenly Father,

  100. we have all experienced

  101. hard and painful times.

  102. And we know as people

  103. still living

  104. that there will be

  105. more hard and difficult times to come.

  106. Father,

  107. help us to understand

  108. how you encourage us

  109. and how you are with us

  110. and love us

  111. in those times, Lord.

  112. Amen.

  113. The author of Hebrews,

  114. he writes to a church

  115. who it seems

  116. were faced with

  117. much persecution.

  118. They hadn't been persecuted yet

  119. enough to shed blood,

  120. but they were likely faced

  121. with daily persecution.

  122. And they're faced

  123. with this question,

  124. we're under attack

  125. and so who is in charge?

  126. Is God really in charge?

  127. God,

  128. are you sovereign

  129. over our enemies?

  130. Or are they more powerful

  131. than you?

  132. And so the author

  133. describes Christianity

  134. as a race.

  135. one with challenges

  136. and difficulties,

  137. but with a joy,

  138. a joy of being

  139. with Christ.

  140. Have a look with me

  141. at Hebrews 12,

    Hebrews 12:1

  142. verse 1.

  143. And let us run

  144. with perseverance

  145. the race

  146. marked out for us,

  147. fixing our eyes

  148. on Jesus.

  149. And then down

  150. to verse 3,

  151. so that you will not

  152. grow weary

  153. and lose heart.

  154. There is temptation

  155. to grow weary

  156. and lose heart

  157. with whatever goal

  158. you are chasing.

  159. And this is not a

  160. short-term goal,

  161. this is not even

  162. a long-term goal

  163. like a 42k marathon.

  164. This is a lifelong goal

  165. of following Jesus

  166. and being with Him.

  167. And the author

  168. of this letter

  169. encourages us

  170. as we run this race.

  171. Verse 5,

  172. and have you

  173. completely forgotten

  174. this word

  175. of encouragement

  176. that addresses you

  177. as a father

  178. addresses his son.

  179. It says,

  180. My son,

  181. do not make light

  182. of the Lord's discipline

  183. and do not lose heart

  184. when He rebukes you

  185. because the Lord

  186. disciplines the one

  187. He loves

  188. and He chastens

  189. everyone He accepts

  190. as a son.

  191. Father to child

  192. discipline

  193. is the way

  194. that God

  195. encourages us.

  196. And this encouragement

  197. is so we don't

  198. lose heart

  199. and so we don't

  200. grow weary.

  201. Now you might be

  202. thinking,

  203. discipline?

  204. Discipline is what's

  205. supposed to encourage me.

  206. Maybe when you're

  207. in the midst

  208. of a hardship,

  209. maybe something like

  210. some comforting words,

  211. everything's going

  212. to be okay.

  213. That's what encourages you.

  214. Maybe a gift of food.

  215. Maybe,

  216. you know,

  217. I mentioned a pile

  218. of donuts

  219. the other week.

  220. That's really encouraging

  221. to me in difficult times.

  222. But here

  223. we see that God

  224. chooses

  225. discipline

  226. to encourage us.

  227. What then

  228. is discipline?

  229. Here we go.

  230. Here's a definition

  231. of discipline for us.

  232. Discipline

  233. is training

  234. or correction.

  235. Discipline

  236. is training

  237. or education

  238. by correction

  239. or punishment.

  240. Training

  241. or education

  242. by correction

  243. or punishment.

  244. And this is what

  245. God does for us

  246. and this is how

  247. he encourages us.

  248. Now the first thing

  249. to note

  250. with discipline

  251. from God

  252. is that he

  253. does not

  254. punish us.

  255. God does not

  256. see our sinful

  257. behavior

  258. and get angry

  259. and send hardship

  260. to us.

  261. He does not go,

  262. you know,

  263. James,

  264. case in your sinning

  265. again,

  266. here's a lightning

  267. bolt to punish you.

  268. God

  269. does not

  270. punish his people.

  271. Let me say that

  272. again.

  273. God does not

  274. punish his people

  275. who follow Jesus.

  276. But he disciplines

  277. us through hardship

  278. and adversity

  279. in our lives.

  280. These are painful

  281. and difficult

  282. but our hardships

  283. are not punishments.

  284. God has

  285. met out

  286. all of the

  287. punishment

  288. that we deserve

  289. on his son,

  290. Jesus.

  291. That is the cross.

  292. That is the place

  293. where our punishment

  294. has been dealt

  295. with.

  296. But he does

  297. discipline us.

  298. He corrects

  299. and trains

  300. our behavior

  301. but in a

  302. relationship with

  303. him.

  304. How do you feel

  305. with me saying

  306. that God

  307. trains and

  308. educates

  309. and changes

  310. our behavior

  311. through discipline

  312. and correction?

  313. Do you feel

  314. okay?

  315. Does this idea

  316. of discipline

  317. make you feel

  318. a little bit

  319. awkward?

  320. When we think

  321. of God

  322. as a father

  323. who disciplines

  324. us,

  325. it can be hard

  326. for us not

  327. to think of

  328. our own parents

  329. or what we

  330. are like

  331. as parents

  332. disciplining

  333. our children.

  334. And this can

  335. go either way.

  336. It could be,

  337. oh look,

  338. my father,

  339. he never

  340. disciplined me

  341. at all

  342. and I've

  343. turned out

  344. okay,

  345. so what's

  346. the point

  347. of discipline?

  348. I see no

  349. point.

  350. Or it could

  351. go the other

  352. way,

  353. my father

  354. was very

  355. firm.

  356. he always

  357. disciplined me

  358. very firmly

  359. and I've

  360. turned out

  361. okay,

  362. so of course

  363. I want

  364. God to

  365. discipline

  366. me.

  367. Or our

  368. view of

  369. our fathers

  370. can be

  371. painful.

  372. Maybe we

  373. don't have a

  374. relationship

  375. with our

  376. father at

  377. all or

  378. maybe some

  379. of us have

  380. painful

  381. memories of

  382. being disciplined

  383. by a father.

  384. Some of us

  385. might right

  386. now be in a

  387. difficult

  388. relationship

  389. with our

  390. fathers

  391. where

  392. discipline

  393. has crossed

  394. a boundary.

  395. For that

  396. person in

  397. that situation

  398. it can be

  399. hard to

  400. think that

  401. God should

  402. discipline.

  403. Discipline

  404. can only

  405. seem like

  406. a bad

  407. word when

  408. we view

  409. discipline

  410. from our

  411. perspective

  412. in the

  413. world.

  414. But here

  415. in Hebrews

  416. 12

  417. discipline

  418. is about

  419. loving

  420. correction.

  421. It is

  422. guiding

  423. and putting

  424. us back

  425. on the

  426. path to

  427. follow

  428. the

  429. Lord.

  430. Before we

  431. look at

  432. what God's

  433. discipline

  434. actually looks

  435. like,

  436. the author

  437. wants to

  438. make sure

  439. that we

  440. get the

  441. most out

  442. of our

  443. correction.

  444. And so

  445. he says,

  446. my son,

  447. do not

  448. make light

  449. of the

  450. Lord's

  451. discipline

  452. and do

  453. not lose

  454. heart when

  455. he rebukes

  456. you because

  457. the Lord

  458. disciplines

  459. the one

  460. he loves

  461. and he

  462. chastens

  463. everyone he

  464. accepts as

  465. his son.

  466. he disciplines

  467. because he

  468. loves.

  469. And the

  470. first thing

  471. he wants

  472. us to

  473. be aware

  474. of is

  475. not making

  476. light of

  477. discipline.

  478. Making

  479. light of

  480. God's

  481. discipline.

  482. This might

  483. seem difficult

  484. to do.

  485. If God

  486. is disciplining

  487. us, how

  488. would we

  489. make light

  490. of it?

  491. I think

  492. of a

  493. child who

  494. disciplines

  495. the, a

  496. child who

  497. disobeys the

  498. parent and

  499. is disciplined.

  500. They can get

  501. upset at the

  502. parent, how

  503. dare you

  504. discipline me?

  505. I was in

  506. the right, you

  507. were in the

  508. wrong.

  509. Maybe you

  510. were like that

  511. as a child,

  512. maybe you've

  513. seen a child

  514. like that.

  515. I see some

  516. people smiling,

  517. I don't want

  518. to know.

  519. A child in

  520. that position,

  521. thinking that

  522. they are

  523. right, they

  524. will never

  525. learn from

  526. discipline.

  527. And it's

  528. as easy for

  529. a parent to

  530. think, I've

  531. told my

  532. child the

  533. right way to

  534. go, I've

  535. disciplined

  536. them.

  537. But five

  538. minutes later

  539. they're doing

  540. the exact

  541. same thing

  542. again, making

  543. light of

  544. discipline and

  545. ignoring it.

  546. A child, a

  547. person, us

  548. in that

  549. situation, we

  550. lack humility.

  551. We lack

  552. self-awareness

  553. that we

  554. desperately need

  555. God to

  556. correct us.

  557. Don't make

  558. light of the

  559. Lord's

  560. discipline.

  561. Don't remain

  562. indifferent.

  563. Maybe you

  564. can vaguely

  565. see that God

  566. is calling you

  567. to change your

  568. behavior.

  569. But you

  570. don't actually

  571. spend time

  572. meditating on

  573. what it

  574. means.

  575. It's not

  576. helpful for a

  577. child to

  578. ignore their

  579. parents'

  580. discipline.

  581. You know, the

  582. parent who

  583. says, don't

  584. touch that, it's

  585. hot.

  586. You know, you

  587. want your child to

  588. learn the lesson

  589. from the

  590. instruction and

  591. not them

  592. touching it.

  593. God does the

  594. same thing.

  595. Don't go down

  596. that path.

  597. That is not the

  598. best way to go.

  599. you will hurt

  600. yourself.

  601. This is not

  602. the way I

  603. have for you.

  604. Don't ignore

  605. me.

  606. And when we

  607. don't think

  608. about the

  609. discipline that

  610. God gives to

  611. us through

  612. hardship, we

  613. don't learn

  614. from it.

  615. And when we

  616. refuse to

  617. consider our

  618. deep and

  619. difficult times,

  620. our lives and

  621. relationships with

  622. God will just

  623. remain shallow.

  624. some of us

  625. can be

  626. indifferent to

  627. God's

  628. discipline, but

  629. for others, they

  630. can be crushed

  631. by it.

  632. They are

  633. overwhelmed and

  634. lose heart.

  635. And so the

  636. author of the

  637. Hebrews wants

  638. to make sure

  639. that you don't

  640. make light of

  641. God's discipline,

  642. but don't lose

  643. heart by his

  644. discipline.

  645. Don't be like

  646. the runner who

  647. collapses on

  648. the track

  649. completing that

  650. race.

  651. Maybe we

  652. hate conflict,

  653. we're unable

  654. to deal with

  655. correction.

  656. Maybe you

  657. are afraid that

  658. if God is

  659. disciplining you,

  660. it means he's

  661. angry with you.

  662. How do we

  663. face discipline

  664. from God

  665. without losing

  666. heart and

  667. without making

  668. light of it?

  669. The Lord

  670. disciplines the

  671. one he loves.

  672. And he

  673. chastens

  674. everyone he

  675. accepts as

  676. his son.

  677. God

  678. disciplines the

  679. one he

  680. loves.

  681. This is a

  682. strange

  683. doctrine.

  684. It's a really

  685. difficult thing,

  686. but it's also a

  687. wonderful truth.

  688. On the one

  689. side, God

  690. disciplines, but

  691. it's only because

  692. he loves.

  693. God

  694. disciplines

  695. because he

  696. loves.

  697. God

  698. doesn't

  699. discipline out

  700. of wrath

  701. or anger.

  702. He's not

  703. punishing.

  704. It is truly

  705. only from love

  706. because he

  707. has made us

  708. his children

  709. and brought

  710. us into

  711. his family.

  712. One where

  713. he is the

  714. father and

  715. he cares for

  716. us.

  717. He cares for

  718. our instruction.

  719. The author

  720. to the Hebrews

  721. encourages this

  722. church when they

  723. are under

  724. attack.

  725. He reminds

  726. them of

  727. these promises.

  728. Don't lose

  729. heart.

  730. Don't make

  731. light of God's

  732. discipline.

  733. He will guide

  734. you in your

  735. growth and

  736. he does

  737. this all

  738. because he

  739. loves you.

  740. So we

  741. come to

  742. the question,

  743. how?

  744. How does

  745. God actually

  746. discipline us?

  747. Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:7

  748. verse 7.

  749. Endure

  750. hardship as

  751. discipline.

  752. Just those

  753. simple four

  754. words,

  755. endure

  756. hardship as

  757. discipline.

  758. Hardship.

  759. Adversity.

  760. This is

  761. God's

  762. discipline.

  763. This is

  764. his correction

  765. or training

  766. for us.

  767. Now remember

  768. the Hebrew

  769. church were

  770. being persecuted.

  771. They were

  772. being attacked.

  773. Is it

  774. that God

  775. is doing

  776. that through

  777. fatherly love

  778. to correct

  779. this church?

  780. It doesn't

  781. say that God

  782. looks on while

  783. his people are

  784. being attacked

  785. and going

  786. through hardship.

  787. hardship, but

  788. that the

  789. Lord is

  790. the one

  791. who disciplines.

  792. He is

  793. the one

  794. who chastens.

  795. He is

  796. the one

  797. who corrects

  798. and teaches.

  799. Does that

  800. mean that

  801. in some

  802. form God

  803. is in

  804. charge and

  805. responsible for

  806. all hardship?

  807. Is it

  808. possible that

  809. God not

  810. only allows

  811. hardship, but

  812. actually sends

  813. hardship to

  814. us, to

  815. draw us

  816. closer to

  817. him, to

  818. correct and

  819. to train

  820. us?

  821. Is God

  822. in control

  823. of all

  824. hardship?

  825. Is he in

  826. control of

  827. all of the

  828. difficult seasons

  829. that we face

  830. and experience

  831. in life?

  832. Of sickness

  833. and loss?

  834. Of losing

  835. a job?

  836. A relationship

  837. of hurt

  838. and brokenness?

  839. Does God

  840. just allow

  841. these things

  842. to happen

  843. or is he

  844. in some

  845. way involved

  846. in them

  847. all?

  848. Imagine

  849. two types

  850. of surgeons

  851. for me.

  852. There's

  853. the emergency

  854. room surgeon

  855. and then there

  856. is the elective

  857. surgery surgeon

  858. and I'll have

  859. our surgeon

  860. correct me

  861. later if I'm

  862. wrong about

  863. this.

  864. So we've

  865. got our two

  866. surgeons, the

  867. emergency room

  868. and then the

  869. elective planned

  870. surgery.

  871. The first

  872. emergency, the

  873. first one, the

  874. emergency room

  875. surgeon, a

  876. person comes

  877. in with a

  878. mangled leg.

  879. Let's think of

  880. the situation,

  881. what's happened

  882. to them?

  883. Sorry, bike

  884. accident.

  885. Thank you,

  886. Nolly.

  887. But let's go,

  888. just a simple

  889. bike accident.

  890. Okay, that's

  891. nice, simple.

  892. They've fallen

  893. off their bike

  894. and their leg

  895. is damaged.

  896. The emergency

  897. surgeon operates

  898. to save the

  899. leg and fix

  900. the situation.

  901. Okay, and

  902. then it's a

  903. very different

  904. from my limited

  905. understanding of

  906. surgery, which

  907. I have no

  908. understanding other

  909. than that TV

  910. show House.

  911. Imagine on the

  912. other side with

  913. the elective

  914. surgery surgeon,

  915. a patient has

  916. come in with a

  917. cancerous growth

  918. on their leg and

  919. the surgeon has

  920. planned out what

  921. he needs to do,

  922. he's taken

  923. MRIs, x-rays,

  924. multiple scans,

  925. and he can see

  926. the growth inside

  927. the leg and

  928. they plan out

  929. what they're

  930. going to do,

  931. they draw on

  932. the leg what

  933. they're going to

  934. do, and he

  935. takes a scalpel,

  936. presumably,

  937. slices the

  938. leg, removes

  939. the cancerous

  940. growth, and

  941. then fixes it

  942. back up.

  943. So we've got

  944. these two

  945. options.

  946. One responds

  947. to the damage

  948. and fixes it,

  949. one surgeon

  950. plans it,

  951. there is pain,

  952. but there is

  953. a healing as

  954. well.

  955. Which of

  956. these two is

  957. our God-like

  958. when it comes

  959. to hardship

  960. and pain?

  961. Is God-like

  962. the elective,

  963. is God-like

  964. the emergency

  965. room surgeon

  966. who sees

  967. our pain

  968. and just

  969. fixes us up,

  970. heals us,

  971. and goes,

  972. there you go,

  973. you'll be fine,

  974. go on.

  975. Or is

  976. God sovereign

  977. and in

  978. control?

  979. He has

  980. planned out

  981. what needs

  982. to happen

  983. to us,

  984. and the

  985. pain of

  986. hardship

  987. will hurt

  988. us,

  989. much like

  990. the scalpel

  991. to the

  992. leg.

  993. But he

  994. brings healing

  995. through that

  996. as well.

  997. God is

  998. not a

  999. passive

  1000. observer.

  1001. He doesn't

  1002. sit idly by

  1003. while we

  1004. are being

  1005. attacked,

  1006. while we

  1007. are under

  1008. hardship.

  1009. The picture

  1010. of God

  1011. here is

  1012. a father

  1013. who is

  1014. intimately

  1015. involved

  1016. in raising

  1017. up his

  1018. children.

  1019. He is

  1020. the one

  1021. who is

  1022. disciplining.

  1023. God is

  1024. the one

  1025. who rules

  1026. over

  1027. sinners.

  1028. He is

  1029. the one

  1030. who is

  1031. in control

  1032. of those

  1033. who are

  1034. persecuting

  1035. the church.

  1036. Those people

  1037. are still

  1038. guilty,

  1039. but God

  1040. uses them

  1041. to work

  1042. out his

  1043. loving

  1044. purpose

  1045. of

  1046. disciplining

  1047. this

  1048. church,

  1049. of

  1050. growing

  1051. them

  1052. up

  1053. in

  1054. their

  1055. faith.

  1056. And he

  1057. does the

  1058. same

  1059. for us.

  1060. I was

  1061. really sick

  1062. a couple

  1063. of weeks

  1064. ago.

  1065. What

  1066. started

  1067. as a

  1068. cold

  1069. grew

  1070. into

  1071. a

  1072. flu

  1073. and

  1074. then

  1075. very

  1076. quickly

  1077. full-blown

  1078. man

  1079. flu.

  1080. Ladies,

  1081. you'll

  1082. know how

  1083. bad

  1084. this

  1085. is.

  1086. Turned

  1087. into

  1088. a chest

  1089. infection

  1090. and four

  1091. of us

  1092. at home

  1093. were hit

  1094. really

  1095. hard.

  1096. Alyssa

  1097. unfortunately

  1098. was hit

  1099. really

  1100. bad,

  1101. but she

  1102. was the

  1103. least

  1104. sick

  1105. somehow.

  1106. She

  1107. wasn't

  1108. well.

  1109. I

  1110. couldn't

  1111. do

  1112. much

  1113. at the

  1114. time

  1115. but pray

  1116. to God,

  1117. help me

  1118. get better.

  1119. God

  1120. help me

  1121. get better.

  1122. Now,

  1123. God

  1124. was in

  1125. control

  1126. of that

  1127. situation.

  1128. I can't

  1129. see the

  1130. exact

  1131. connection

  1132. between

  1133. being

  1134. sick

  1135. and my

  1136. sin,

  1137. but looking

  1138. back,

  1139. it's made

  1140. me wonder,

  1141. it's made

  1142. me wonder,

  1143. was God

  1144. trying to

  1145. teach me

  1146. something

  1147. then?

  1148. Was he

  1149. disciplining

  1150. me because

  1151. I don't

  1152. depend on

  1153. him and

  1154. I depend

  1155. on

  1156. antibiotics,

  1157. just the

  1158. fact that

  1159. I will

  1160. get better?

  1161. I still

  1162. think I'm

  1163. physically

  1164. capable.

  1165. Do I

  1166. have an

  1167. idol of

  1168. health and

  1169. self-control

  1170. that God

  1171. was just

  1172. trying to

  1173. break down

  1174. so that I

  1175. depended on

  1176. him?

  1177. I wonder

  1178. if God

  1179. uses

  1180. hardships

  1181. because we

  1182. just don't

  1183. listen.

  1184. Does God

  1185. use hardships

  1186. because it

  1187. is too

  1188. easy to

  1189. ignore him

  1190. when all

  1191. is going

  1192. well?

  1193. And he

  1194. needs to

  1195. remind us

  1196. of how

  1197. much we

  1198. need to

  1199. depend upon

  1200. him.

  1201. We do

  1202. like to

  1203. draw the

  1204. connection,

  1205. God is

  1206. sending this

  1207. because of

  1208. my sin,

  1209. this hardship

  1210. is all of

  1211. my fault,

  1212. I'm being

  1213. punished for

  1214. this.

  1215. can we

  1216. tell always

  1217. if a

  1218. particular

  1219. hardship

  1220. has come

  1221. from a

  1222. specific

  1223. sin in

  1224. our life?

  1225. Well,

  1226. we might

  1227. be able

  1228. to,

  1229. the Holy

  1230. Spirit

  1231. might bring

  1232. it to

  1233. our

  1234. attention,

  1235. but I

  1236. think

  1237. chasing

  1238. reasons for

  1239. hardship

  1240. can be

  1241. a danger.

  1242. It can

  1243. make our

  1244. lives much

  1245. like a

  1246. Western

  1247. version of

  1248. karma,

  1249. where we

  1250. think this

  1251. hardship has

  1252. happened because

  1253. of my sin,

  1254. I'm at fault

  1255. and God

  1256. has sent

  1257. this to

  1258. me,

  1259. this pain

  1260. is because

  1261. of that

  1262. action I

  1263. did,

  1264. but I

  1265. think this

  1266. is dangerous

  1267. because

  1268. Jesus has

  1269. taken our

  1270. punishment for

  1271. our sins,

  1272. and we

  1273. don't have

  1274. to bear

  1275. some of

  1276. the pain

  1277. for our

  1278. sin,

  1279. Jesus has

  1280. taken that,

  1281. but every

  1282. expression of

  1283. discipline is

  1284. intended to

  1285. bring us to

  1286. be more like

  1287. Jesus.

  1288. Now,

  1289. during a

  1290. moment of

  1291. hardship,

  1292. we often

  1293. will not

  1294. see the

  1295. point.

  1296. We won't

  1297. see what

  1298. God is

  1299. doing.

  1300. But during

  1301. hardship,

  1302. it should be

  1303. enough for

  1304. us to

  1305. know that

  1306. God is

  1307. in control,

  1308. and this

  1309. hardship is

  1310. somehow for

  1311. our good.

  1312. The author

  1313. to the

  1314. Hebrews gives

  1315. us an

  1316. encouragement,

  1317. God is in

  1318. control of

  1319. all things,

  1320. even

  1321. hardships,

  1322. hardships,

  1323. and he

  1324. uses them

  1325. for our

  1326. good to

  1327. guide and

  1328. grow us.

  1329. The

  1330. encouragement and

  1331. comfort here

  1332. must come from

  1333. the fact that

  1334. God is in

  1335. control.

  1336. So God

  1337. encourages us

  1338. to continue

  1339. the race,

  1340. and he uses

  1341. hard times to

  1342. discipline us.

  1343. But why?

  1344. Why?

  1345. Why does he

  1346. use hard and

  1347. painful things?

  1348. Verse 7

  1349. again,

  1350. God is

  1351. treating you

  1352. as his

  1353. children.

  1354. For what

  1355. children are

  1356. not disciplined

  1357. by their

  1358. father?

  1359. If you are

  1360. not disciplined,

  1361. and everyone

  1362. undergoes

  1363. discipline,

  1364. then you are

  1365. not legitimate.

  1366. The author

  1367. uses a very

  1368. real-world

  1369. example to

  1370. explain why

  1371. God disciplines.

  1372. In the

  1373. first century,

  1374. children were

  1375. disciplined by

  1376. their fathers.

  1377. It was their

  1378. responsibility.

  1379. They had the

  1380. primary focus

  1381. of disciplining.

  1382. And the

  1383. argument goes

  1384. that children

  1385. are disciplined

  1386. by their

  1387. fathers unless

  1388. there is

  1389. something wrong.

  1390. An illegitimate

  1391. child would

  1392. not be

  1393. disciplined.

  1394. Discipline is

  1395. actually a

  1396. proof for us

  1397. that we have a

  1398. close relationship

  1399. with God.

  1400. We are

  1401. not

  1402. illegitimate

  1403. children he

  1404. feels burdened

  1405. to carry like

  1406. he's just

  1407. got to feed

  1408. us, but he

  1409. doesn't want to

  1410. look at us.

  1411. It's actually

  1412. the opposite.

  1413. God disciplines

  1414. us because we

  1415. are so close.

  1416. Now our

  1417. fathers

  1418. discipline as

  1419. best as they

  1420. thought possible,

  1421. but God as a

  1422. father disciplines

  1423. not like us.

  1424. A parent might

  1425. have a good or

  1426. a bad relationship

  1427. with discipline.

  1428. Even the best

  1429. parents discipline

  1430. as best as

  1431. they think.

  1432. But we are

  1433. all fallible.

  1434. Every parent

  1435. is fallible.

  1436. They're

  1437. inconsistent and

  1438. often guided

  1439. by emotions.

  1440. Anyone who

  1441. has tried to

  1442. discipline a

  1443. child in a

  1444. godly manner

  1445. knows that there

  1446. are simply times

  1447. when you don't

  1448. do the right

  1449. thing or you

  1450. just don't know

  1451. what the right

  1452. thing to do

  1453. is.

  1454. How do I

  1455. discipline this

  1456. child?

  1457. How much

  1458. do I

  1459. discipline

  1460. them?

  1461. How much

  1462. is too

  1463. much?

  1464. What is

  1465. harsh?

  1466. What is

  1467. enough?

  1468. I've seen

  1469. my children

  1470. shrug off

  1471. discipline.

  1472. Just water

  1473. off a

  1474. duck's

  1475. back.

  1476. But I've

  1477. also seen

  1478. them emotionally

  1479. crushed by

  1480. my discipline.

  1481. Finding the

  1482. right balance

  1483. between those

  1484. two is a

  1485. challenge.

  1486. God is

  1487. not an

  1488. inconsistent

  1489. parent.

  1490. He doesn't

  1491. discipline

  1492. harshly based

  1493. on his

  1494. emotions.

  1495. God always

  1496. cares for us

  1497. in the same

  1498. way.

  1499. He doesn't

  1500. have debate

  1501. with himself.

  1502. What is the

  1503. best thing to

  1504. do in this

  1505. moment?

  1506. He knows

  1507. what we

  1508. need and

  1509. he only

  1510. gives us

  1511. what we

  1512. need.

  1513. Verse 10,

  1514. God disciplines

  1515. us for our

  1516. good in order

  1517. that we may

  1518. share in

  1519. his holiness.

  1520. No discipline

  1521. seems pleasant

  1522. at the time

  1523. but painful.

  1524. Later on,

  1525. however,

  1526. it produces

  1527. a harvest of

  1528. righteousness

  1529. and peace.

  1530. God has a

  1531. purpose behind

  1532. every piece

  1533. of hardship.

  1534. It's not

  1535. pleasant,

  1536. it's just like

  1537. that scalpel,

  1538. but it is

  1539. done for our

  1540. good,

  1541. for our

  1542. holiness,

  1543. for our

  1544. peace,

  1545. and for our

  1546. righteousness.

  1547. righteousness.

  1548. And those

  1549. are definitely

  1550. the places

  1551. that we need

  1552. to be growing

  1553. in as

  1554. Christians.

  1555. It is not

  1556. pleasant,

  1557. but it is

  1558. designed only

  1559. for our

  1560. good.

  1561. When we

  1562. are in the

  1563. midst of

  1564. hardship and

  1565. pain,

  1566. we can't

  1567. understand why

  1568. it's happening.

  1569. All we can

  1570. do is to

  1571. cry out to

  1572. God to

  1573. end the

  1574. pain,

  1575. bring this

  1576. suffering to

  1577. an end.

  1578. It might

  1579. not be

  1580. years later

  1581. until we

  1582. realize what

  1583. God has

  1584. done.

  1585. He may

  1586. have sent

  1587. hardship and

  1588. difficult times

  1589. to you when

  1590. you were a

  1591. teenager to

  1592. prepare you to

  1593. be who you

  1594. are today.

  1595. He may have

  1596. corrected you and

  1597. disciplined you in

  1598. your 20s so

  1599. that in your

  1600. 40s you were

  1601. able to survive

  1602. what was going

  1603. on.

  1604. He might be

  1605. disciplining you

  1606. today in

  1607. hardship because

  1608. of what is

  1609. coming in the

  1610. future.

  1611. We might

  1612. never know

  1613. the reason

  1614. for a

  1615. season of

  1616. hardship and

  1617. pain but

  1618. God knows.

  1619. He's planned

  1620. it and he is

  1621. sovereign over

  1622. it.

  1623. Even though we

  1624. can't see what

  1625. God is doing

  1626. in the midst of

  1627. hardship we

  1628. must remember

  1629. that he is

  1630. sovereign and

  1631. in control.

  1632. If you're in a

  1633. season of

  1634. hardship or

  1635. pain or

  1636. adversity today

  1637. hold on to

  1638. that truth that

  1639. God is in

  1640. control and he

  1641. loves you.

  1642. Remember these

  1643. two truths when

  1644. hard times come

  1645. because the

  1646. longer that we

  1647. live the more

  1648. likely that

  1649. difficult times

  1650. are coming.

  1651. I heard about

  1652. a woman who

  1653. was about to

  1654. become a

  1655. grandmother.

  1656. Her new

  1657. grandchild was

  1658. in a different

  1659. state in the

  1660. US and to

  1661. see this

  1662. grandchild she

  1663. would have to

  1664. fly.

  1665. But this

  1666. woman hated

  1667. flying.

  1668. was absolutely

  1669. terrified of

  1670. it.

  1671. But the

  1672. only way to

  1673. overcome her

  1674. fear to

  1675. endure the

  1676. hardship of

  1677. flying was

  1678. with the

  1679. destination in

  1680. mind.

  1681. We have a

  1682. journey marked

  1683. out for us

  1684. with the joy

  1685. of being with

  1686. the Lord at

  1687. the end of

  1688. this race.

  1689. But this

  1690. journey called

  1691. life is not

  1692. always easy.

  1693. there are

  1694. good times.

  1695. There are

  1696. hard times.

  1697. And God

  1698. uses these to

  1699. train and to

  1700. correct and

  1701. adjust our

  1702. hearts and he

  1703. does this

  1704. lovingly because

  1705. he is our

  1706. father who

  1707. loves and

  1708. cares for us.

  1709. Let me pray.

  1710. Heavenly

  1711. father you

  1712. are a good

  1713. and generous

  1714. God.

  1715. We thank

  1716. you that you

  1717. are in

  1718. control of

  1719. all things,

  1720. that you

  1721. are in

  1722. control of

  1723. good times

  1724. and difficult

  1725. days,

  1726. Lord.

  1727. Father,

  1728. when we

  1729. are in

  1730. those difficult

  1731. days,

  1732. those hard

  1733. times,

  1734. remind us

  1735. that you

  1736. are in

  1737. control and

  1738. that you

  1739. love us.

  1740. Use these

  1741. to discipline

  1742. us,

  1743. to bring us

  1744. back to

  1745. you,

  1746. so that we

  1747. can reach

  1748. the end

  1749. of this

  1750. race marked

  1751. out for

  1752. us.

  1753. For what a

  1754. joy it is

  1755. to be your

  1756. children,

  1757. Lord.

  1758. Amen.

  1759. Amen.
