  1. Good evening, everybody.

  2. And thank you to those two who read so wonderfully for us, those Bible readings.

  3. Thank you, too, for the invitation to be here with you tonight.

  4. It's a joy and a privilege to open God's word with you.

  5. And I'm going to pray for us that God would open our hearts and our minds and our wills to hear his word.

  6. So let's bow our heads.

  7. Heavenly Father, God in heaven, thank you that you speak to us.

  8. Thank you that you are not silent.

  9. And we pray that this afternoon you would be the one who would speak to us.

  10. Please, indeed, open our eyes to the truth of your word.

  11. Open our hearts to the sweet riches of it.

  12. And open our wills towards the steps that you would have us walk in the light of it.

  13. Please lead us to Jesus.

  14. And please may we follow him.

  15. Amen.

  16. Saturday, 13th of January, 2018.

  17. Saturday morning.

  18. Typical quiet Saturday morning in Hawaii.

  19. Until people, millions of people, started receiving a message on their cell phones.

  20. That changed that day quite considerably.

  21. The message read thus.

  22. Emergency alert.

  23. Ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii.

  24. Seek immediate shelter.

  25. This is not a drill.

  26. Can you imagine if that happened in Chatswood?

  27. It would change your day, wouldn't it, really?

  28. It changed the day of millions of Hawaiians.

  29. Particularly given that it was a time when there were tensions between the United States and North Korea.

  30. About the very possibility of incoming missiles.

  31. Particularly because this was, on one level, a very clear communication.

  32. Short, stark sentences.

  33. Telling you what to do.

  34. Ah.

  35. There was one problem.

  36. Have you spotted it?

  37. Probably the fact that you realise that Hawaii hasn't been hit by missiles in the last few years.

  38. Is a pointer towards that problem was.

  39. It was not a clear communication from the government of Hawaii.

  40. As to what the government of Hawaii actually wanted to tell its people.

  41. And for 30 minutes, chaos gently and quite widely reigned.

  42. It was followed by hours and days of government inquiries.

  43. Who had done this?

  44. Initial excuses ending up with people being fired.

  45. It was a clear communication on the surface.

  46. But not a clear communication from the government.

  47. I want to ask you this question.

  48. Is the Bible like that?

  49. But possibly worse.

  50. The Bible is old.

  51. And venerable.

  52. It points us to great blessings.

  53. But is it clear?

  54. Is it clear?

  55. Can we trust it?

  56. Can it really tell us a word from God who has made us?

  57. Who holds us?

  58. Who can in the Lord Jesus keep us?

  59. I want to take you back today to the words of scripture.

  60. And ask the question.

  61. Is it a clear microphone?

  62. For listening to the word of God himself.

  63. You see the Bible claims.

  64. Repeatedly.

  65. To be the word of God.

  66. If you crack the Bible open anywhere.

  67. And you look and see what is written in it.

  68. Then what you find is it's God's word.

  69. Over and over and over again.

  70. The prophets say.

  71. Thus says the Lord.

  72. If we go to 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  73. Then all scripture is God breathed.

  74. And is good for us.

  75. That's the claim of the Bible.

  76. That's the claim.

  77. But is it clear?

  78. Today I want to take us back to ancient worlds.

  79. The worlds of Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  80. And Matthew's gospel chapter 4.

  81. To ask questions of God's word.

  82. That are questions which will apply to Chatswood today.

  83. Ancient worlds yes.

  84. But Chatswood is not that far away.

  85. You see the Bible makes claims.

  86. And those claims reflect its speaker.

  87. If one of my children says to me.

  88. Daddy I love you dearly.

  89. It's your birthday coming up.

  90. And I'm going to buy you a new car for your birthday.

  91. A new car.

  92. Daddy you deserve a new car.

  93. Your old one's rusting away.

  94. And I'm going to buy you a new car.

  95. I'll go that's nice.

  96. Thank you.

  97. But I don't believe it.

  98. I realize the heart is there.

  99. It's heartfelt.

  100. But the resources behind it are limited.

  101. Flip side example.

  102. What about your politicians?

  103. Do you trust your politicians in Australia?

  104. I hope in a...

  105. Do you?

  106. I hope some of them you do.

  107. But it's that case by case analysis.

  108. Is this person clear and trustworthy?

  109. Or do they millions and billions that are promised?

  110. Not add up.

  111. Well clarity makes claims.

  112. Words reflect their speaker.

  113. My child.

  114. A politician.

  115. God himself.

  116. What about God in his word?

  117. This Bible.

  118. Can we trust it?

  119. I want to say several things.

  120. Before we turn to our Bible passages.

  121. First of all.

  122. God knows how you are made.

  123. Why does he do that?

  124. How does he know that?

  125. Because he made you.

  126. If you think of all your machine code.

  127. Not just your physicality.

  128. Not just your mental processing.

  129. Not just your psychology.

  130. He knows all the code that goes into you.

  131. Because he spoke it into being.

  132. You are not an accident.

  133. You are not just thrown together.

  134. But you are the product of God's word.

  135. And God knows that he made us for relationship.

  136. He can accommodate himself to limited minds.

  137. Outlooks that can only see as far as a door and no further.

  138. And God can come in and speak to us.

  139. Without overwhelming a human speaker.

  140. One of the readings we got today is from Matthew's gospel.

  141. Matthew.

  142. One of those followers of Jesus.

  143. And when we read Matthew's gospel.

  144. We hear Matthew's words.

  145. As Matthew put it together.

  146. As he remembered Jesus.

  147. Whom he'd followed.

  148. Who he'd given his life to.

  149. God doesn't overwhelm the human speaker.

  150. Get out the way Matthew.

  151. I'm going to speak now.

  152. God speaks through Matthew.

  153. Not this one.

  154. The one of 2000 years ago.

  155. Who followed Jesus.

  156. And God's word doesn't get distorted.

  157. By the human speaker.

  158. Biases and prejudices.

  159. Creeping into view.

  160. God knows our code.

  161. He's able to carry his word.

  162. Clearly through the pages of scripture to us.

  163. God is able to speak and be heard.

  164. How can this be?

  165. Because of the work of the Holy Spirit.

  166. The Holy Spirit who breathes out scripture.

  167. To Matthew 2000 years ago.

  168. And who speaks that word.

  169. And even at the point as we hear it.

  170. The Holy Spirit who's inspired scripture.

  171. Who also convicts us as we hear it.

  172. What does it mean to be convicted by scripture?

  173. It means when we're grabbed by scripture.

  174. And it holds us.

  175. When the Bible grabs us and holds us.

  176. And it's vision becomes our compelling vision.

  177. For our lives.

  178. God's word becomes the word that we will hear.

  179. In my work.

  180. I read a lot of books.

  181. I write about other people's writings.

  182. Sometimes I agree with them.

  183. Sometimes I don't.

  184. I sit in my study in North London.

  185. And I offer my opinions on them.

  186. Sometimes I'm let out.

  187. And I go to conferences.

  188. And get to give my opinions.

  189. Sometimes the person is there.

  190. That's different isn't it at that point.

  191. I've stood on a podium like this.

  192. In front of 20 people.

  193. And one of them.

  194. Has written books.

  195. That will pile up high.

  196. And at one point.

  197. I'm going to say.

  198. I disagree with him.

  199. And he's in the room.

  200. That's when it matters.

  201. The incredible thing with God's word.

  202. Is that we never.

  203. Never.

  204. Read.

  205. Or misread.

  206. God's word.

  207. And he is not there.

  208. The Bible is never read.

  209. In the absence of its author.

  210. This has.

  211. Play out in my country.

  212. And I guess in yours.

  213. Sometimes I meet people.

  214. Perhaps you do as well.

  215. Who say.

  216. Well I like to think.

  217. God.

  218. Is like this.

  219. Or I'm not sure about that bit.

  220. Of the Bible.

  221. If you're a car driver.

  222. Picture it like this.

  223. Do you have traffic wardens in Australia?

  224. Do you?

  225. No?

  226. People who come and put tickets on your cars?

  227. Yeah.

  228. What do you call them?

  229. Annoying.

  230. Okay.

  231. I'll take that one.

  232. But if your heart is anything like mine.

  233. And I guess hearts are pretty international at this point.

  234. Sometimes I park on the line.

  235. And I've got my eye out all around.

  236. You know.

  237. My wife's popped into the shop.

  238. You ever done this?

  239. You're looking to see if someone's coming along.

  240. Ours have high vis jackets.

  241. So you tend to be able to see them coming.

  242. With God.

  243. You never read his word in his absence.

  244. And you're looking around to see if he's coming or not.

  245. With God he's there.

  246. With God.

  247. He is always there.

  248. It's more like parking your car.

  249. On the traffic wardens toes.

  250. It's personal.

  251. It's intimate.

  252. It's not distant.

  253. What does this mean for us?

  254. It means God really wants to speak to you.

  255. God really wants to have a relationship with you.

  256. When we come to the Bible.

  257. It's not just about information.

  258. There's a lot of stuff here in these pages.

  259. But it's driving towards interaction.

  260. To relationship.

  261. To God reaching out to you.

  262. If I quote one part of the Bible.

  263. Which wasn't read to us today.

  264. Romans chapter 10.

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  265. You don't need to know where it is.

  266. I'll say it.

  267. Faith comes from hearing.

  268. Hearing the word of God.

  269. If you're someone who's grown up in church.

  270. Or you're here for the first time.

  271. And you're hearing God's word.

  272. What is coming at you?

  273. What is coming at you?

  274. Are the seeds of faith.

  275. Of being able to take God at his word.

  276. Being able to trust him.

  277. Being able to cling to his promises.

  278. With confidence.

  279. The whole drive and momentum of the Bible.

  280. Heads that way.

  281. It doesn't just say.

  282. Thus says the Lord.

  283. As some sort of strident statement.

  284. I want to say something to you.

  285. Listen to me.

  286. Rather.

  287. God speaks.

  288. So that we might hear.

  289. And come to faith in him.

  290. Not mere curiosity.

  291. Not merely a decision.

  292. Or a verdict about the Bible.

  293. But a relationship.

  294. With God.

  295. Himself.

  296. And in this.

  297. We can't separate.

  298. The words of the Bible.

  299. From the speaker of the Bible.

  300. These paper pages.

  301. Or up on the screens.

  302. When we see it shown to us.

  303. What we have there.

  304. Is God coming to us.

  305. Holding out the hand of relationship.

  306. Inviting us.

  307. Into.

  308. A faithful.

  309. A faithful relationship.

  310. Where we trust him.

  311. Which finally brings us.

  312. To Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  313. The garden of Eden.

  314. The world.

  315. That God.

  316. Had spoken into being.

  317. A rich.

  318. And fruitful place.

  319. And a man.

  320. Adam.

  321. And a woman.

  322. Eve.

  323. Who God.

  324. Had spoken into being.

  325. God spoke humanity.

  326. Into being.

  327. In relationship.

  328. Covenant relationship.

  329. With him.

  330. It's as though God's word.

  331. Held them together.

  332. As well as holding.

  333. The world together.

  334. And they were charged.

  335. To tend the garden.

  336. And to do.

  337. All that God.

  338. Would tell them to do.

  339. That was part of being.

  340. Made.

  341. In the image.

  342. Of God.

  343. God.

  344. But in our reading.

  345. Something toxic.

  346. Came into play.

  347. Something acidic.

  348. Came into play.

  349. Have you ever spilt acid.

  350. When it starts to burn.

  351. That's a battery that's split.

  352. You want something.

  353. That will deal with it.

  354. Well here.

  355. In Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  356. Verse 2.

  357. God.

  358. His good word.

  359. Is challenged.

  360. By a serpent.

  361. The serpent.

  362. The serpent.

  363. Is Satan.

  364. The accuser.

  365. And in verse 2.

  366. The quiet.

  367. Crafty.

  368. Acidic.

  369. Counter word.

  370. Goes out.

  371. Did God.

  372. Really say.

  373. Did God.

  374. Really say.

  375. You could trust him.

  376. The acid.

  377. Starts.

  378. To burn away.

  379. At the very fabric.

  380. Of that relationship.

  381. Between Adam and Eve.

  382. The very fabric.

  383. Of the world.

  384. God.

  385. Is he really good.

  386. Isn't God.

  387. Deceptive.

  388. Isn't God.

  389. Holding you.

  390. In bonds.

  391. That aren't good for you.

  392. But would stop you being free.

  393. Trust another word.

  394. For good food.

  395. For good life.

  396. Instead.

  397. Look at that fruit.

  398. That God told you not to eat.

  399. See it in your eye.

  400. And see that it's pleasant.

  401. And take.

  402. Eat.

  403. But this serpent's voice.

  404. Is the deadly lie.

  405. As one songwriter.

  406. Once put it.

  407. This.

  408. Affects all of us.

  409. The claims.

  410. Of God.

  411. Are on up all of us.

  412. And the songwriter.

  413. Put it like this.

  414. We are all.

  415. Like foolish puppets.

  416. Who desiring.

  417. To be kings.

  418. Now lie pitifully crippled.

  419. After cutting.

  420. Our own strings.

  421. What does God do?

  422. As Adam and Eve.

  423. Are cast out of the garden.

  424. As relationship is broken.

  425. As this counter word.

  426. Comes into play.

  427. God.

  428. Turns.

  429. To adoption.

  430. To Israel.

  431. To the Old Testament people.

  432. That he chooses.

  433. And he's going to nurture.

  434. With his clear word.

  435. Particularly to their kings.

  436. David.

  437. And those who follow after him.

  438. God is going to.

  439. Shape.

  440. And call.

  441. And tie himself to.

  442. Through his words.

  443. A people that he's going to redeem.

  444. That he's going to buy back.

  445. As God's truthful word.

  446. Continues.

  447. To go out.

  448. Ultimately.

  449. Laying its claims.

  450. On all people.

  451. Even here.

  452. In Chatswood.

  453. Today.

  454. We come to our second reading.

  455. As Satan.

  456. Again.

  457. Makes an entry.

  458. This time into the wilderness.

  459. Of Judea.

  460. A crux point.

  461. A crucial turning point.

  462. In God's plan.

  463. Because God's plan of adoption.

  464. Has pointed.

  465. To one person.

  466. Jesus Christ.

  467. God.

  468. In a body.

  469. In a human body.

  470. Taking human form.

  471. To come and be.

  472. A second Adam.

  473. One who will stand up.

  474. And if you have.

  475. Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  476. Open in front of you.

  477. You will see.

  478. Just before this.

  479. That God has spoken.

  480. The last verse.

  481. Of the previous chapter.

  482. Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  483. God has said.

  484. This is my beloved son.

  485. With whom.

  486. I am well pleased.

  487. The truthful word.

  488. Has spoken.

  489. About Jesus.

  490. Luke.

  491. In his gospel.

  492. Also tells this.

  493. And has a family tree.

  494. Of Jesus.

  495. That goes right.

  496. The way back.

  497. To him being God.

  498. The son.

  499. Just before this.

  500. God.

  501. So here is Jesus.

  502. A well pleasing.

  503. Son of God.

  504. And Adam 2.0.

  505. Tested.

  506. His back.

  507. Against the wall.

  508. Hungry.

  509. Not in a place.

  510. Where there's plenty of food.

  511. Like the garden of Eden.

  512. But a place.

  513. That this voice says.

  514. This is God forsaken.

  515. You hear in this desert.

  516. God's spirit.

  517. God's spirit.

  518. Has driven you out.

  519. Here.

  520. Here.

  521. You're a loser.

  522. If you listen to God.

  523. Cut.

  524. On.

  525. Your own path.

  526. But Jesus.

  527. Thanks be to God.

  528. Does not listen.

  529. In that battle of words.

  530. About God.

  531. That we have.

  532. Here in our reading.

  533. Three times.

  534. Jesus is tempted and he's tempted to play against God's word but each time he answers and says God's

  535. word is not only clear it's also nourishing is God's word good good for you is God a good father

  536. Jesus stands firm and if you're wondering how the story ends

  537. Jesus goes through that desert obediently he lives his human life obediently and he dies on a cross

  538. obediently dying a death he didn't deserve but one foretold by God's clear word

  539. what does this mean for us God speaks and that is the basis on which we are

  540. but Adam has gone elsewhere what kind of human being are you going to be this is the purpose of

  541. God's calling what kind of human being are you going to be you're going to be one who listens to God

  542. or one that turns away from God Jesus is one who trusts God and this is where Chatswood

  543. comes into view because Jesus is not a solo listener he is a listener of God who is also God himself

  544. who speaks to us and calls us and invites us with a clear word to follow him remember faith comes by

  545. hearing what does that faith brings it brings a union a joining with Jesus himself

  546. you ever wanted to get into a place and you haven't got a ticket and you see someone with a ticket and

  547. you'd love to be able to say I'm with her or I'm with him and you're ushered in together

  548. that's the nature of faith in Jesus Christ all that happens to him happens to you

  549. you die to self and to selfishness just as he did that you might rise to life eternal life as he did

  550. can you believe him on that or not that's the question it's not an easy question

  551. I don't know any of you here I guess there's all sorts of hurts and pains disappointments broken dreams

  552. but this clear word from God calls you

  553. God comes out to meet you

  554. God doesn't just send a distant beep beep beep

  555. across the galaxies he comes to meet you

  556. in his word and with his word

  557. to carry you by a spirit who is given to you

  558. his holy spirit who is given to you as you come to Jesus

  559. now let me be clear on this

  560. the bible's not always simple

  561. it's not always straightforward

  562. we sometimes need to get together with other hearers other listeners like here in church today

  563. these things can take effort

  564. the good things of God

  565. are dug up

  566. but they are true

  567. and clear

  568. always when we meet together

  569. to read the bible

  570. to read scripture

  571. it's God's rule

  572. that's in view

  573. his word

  574. that is true

  575. sometimes some bits are in

  576. sharper focus for us

  577. than other bits

  578. but we're reminded

  579. not to set one part

  580. against another

  581. any communication can be misconstrued

  582. any communication

  583. at all

  584. we know that in our own lives

  585. but God invites us

  586. to a challenge

  587. a growth challenge

  588. to take the clear bits

  589. of his word

  590. and to then enjoy the harder bits

  591. as well

  592. this morning

  593. 80,000 people

  594. lined up

  595. to run up a hill

  596. that would hurt them

  597. heartbreak hill

  598. I was amongst them

  599. trust me

  600. it hurt

  601. but as I stood there

  602. in a cold

  603. Sydney morning

  604. if someone had said

  605. guys

  606. it's too hard

  607. we're cancelling

  608. heartbreak hill

  609. there's buses

  610. at the bottom

  611. we'll bus you up

  612. it would have been

  613. a mutiny

  614. sometimes the hard things

  615. are the things

  616. that make it

  617. and God's word

  618. is clear

  619. even when it's hard

  620. and difficult

  621. to understand

  622. less heartbreak

  623. more heart

  624. make

  625. God

  626. makes us

  627. anew

  628. in that regard

  629. as we stand

  630. on the pathway

  631. of life

  632. who am I

  633. and who am I

  634. becoming

  635. each of us

  636. are being made

  637. each of us

  638. are being

  639. in our network

  640. of relationships

  641. our life stories

  642. our ups and downs

  643. being made

  644. into someone

  645. apart from God's word

  646. we are lost

  647. lost to our purpose

  648. sometimes even

  649. with God's word

  650. it is hard

  651. and difficult

  652. but God

  653. is clear

  654. and God

  655. is good

  656. what does this

  657. mean for us

  658. in terms of

  659. application

  660. as our lives

  661. unfold

  662. as the spring

  663. of life

  664. turns to the

  665. autumn of life

  666. our formation

  667. our shaping

  668. comes from

  669. where we

  670. are pledged

  671. 23 years

  672. ago

  673. next Saturday

  674. I pledged

  675. myself to my

  676. wife

  677. just down the

  678. road

  679. in North

  680. Sydney

  681. formation

  682. formation

  683. comes from

  684. looking

  685. where we

  686. are pledged

  687. so mind

  688. your pledges

  689. and pursue

  690. them well

  691. if you're a

  692. follower of

  693. Jesus

  694. then keep

  695. turning your

  696. eyes towards

  697. him

  698. he's the

  699. author

  700. of your

  701. faith

  702. the clear

  703. author

  704. who begins

  705. he's the

  706. perfecter

  707. of your

  708. faith

  709. he will

  710. perfect and

  711. bring to

  712. completion

  713. and conclusion

  714. if you're here

  715. today wondering

  716. what is this

  717. Jesus all

  718. about

  719. then let me

  720. put it

  721. this way

  722. Jesus comes

  723. to us

  724. even while he

  725. is seated

  726. in heaven

  727. he comes

  728. to us

  729. clothed

  730. not in this

  731. stuff

  732. but clothed

  733. in the

  734. promises

  735. of scripture

  736. and set

  737. the eyes

  738. of your

  739. heart

  740. set your

  741. desires

  742. towards him

  743. if that's

  744. hard

  745. ask that your

  746. desires will

  747. be changed

  748. that God's

  749. word will

  750. become a

  751. clear and

  752. life-size

  753. narrative

  754. for you

  755. and for

  756. me

  757. across

  758. our

  759. lives

  760. for this

  761. to be the

  762. first priority

  763. of our

  764. days

  765. who do you

  766. listen to

  767. when you

  768. wake up

  769. first in

  770. the morning

  771. is it the

  772. pundits

  773. or the

  774. prophets

  775. do you

  776. reach for

  777. your phone

  778. and check

  779. the news

  780. or do you

  781. reach for

  782. your phone

  783. and check

  784. the good

  785. news

  786. the clear

  787. news

  788. of Jesus

  789. and allow

  790. him to

  791. shape your

  792. life

  793. is it your

  794. contact

  795. checking who's

  796. contacted you

  797. during the

  798. night

  799. or is it

  800. God's Christ

  801. who has

  802. held you

  803. during the

  804. night

  805. who has

  806. not slept

  807. who has

  808. watched over

  809. you

  810. who has

  811. treasured

  812. you

  813. and hold

  814. you

  815. each day

  816. as a

  817. first priority

  818. if this

  819. is a

  820. clear word

  821. then drink

  822. it deeply

  823. don't waste

  824. time

  825. because whatever

  826. you waste

  827. time on will

  828. frame your

  829. time and

  830. will paint

  831. time for

  832. you and

  833. on you

  834. and here

  835. in this

  836. word is a

  837. clear word

  838. from a God

  839. who loves

  840. you and

  841. calls you

  842. the clear

  843. word of

  844. God

  845. let's

  846. bow our

  847. heads and

  848. pray that

  849. it would

  850. come to

  851. us

  852. father in

  853. heaven

  854. we called

  855. upon you

  856. your word

  857. calls us

  858. thank you for

  859. your goodness

  860. and your

  861. trustworthiness

  862. thank you for

  863. the sufficiency

  864. of this

  865. bible that is

  866. before us

  867. in whatever

  868. language we

  869. read it and

  870. love it

  871. please draw

  872. us to

  873. its life

  874. and please

  875. keep doing

  876. so that we

  877. would be the

  878. kind of

  879. person you

  880. want us

  881. to be

  882. that this

  883. would be a

  884. church that

  885. would be shaped

  886. by you

  887. that this

  888. church would

  889. be a beacon

  890. in this

  891. place an

  892. oasis in

  893. this place

  894. where your

  895. clear word

  896. is heard

  897. and where

  898. faith in

  899. Jesus

  900. is grown

  901. by the

  902. power of

  903. your spirit

  904. we pray it in

  905. Jesus name

  906. amen
