  1. The context of these verses is the Apostle Paul defending the authenticity as the true apostle of the Lord Jesus

  2. because his gospel is authentic and therefore his ministry is authentic.

  3. He's being challenged consistently by this church of Corinth who are being swayed away to follow a group of people

  4. who we will discover in a few weeks as the super apostles.

  5. This gives us clarity too on what it means for us to be an authentic follower of the Lord Jesus.

  6. What does it look like to be a disciple of Jesus?

  7. And what Paul has written in 2 Corinthians 3, 4 and now 5 is meant to help us to not lose heart as a follower of Christ.

  8. He mentions not losing heart in chapter 4 verse 1, again in verse 16

  9. and he writes about the ministry of the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  10. the Christian faith that has turned his life inside out and upside down.

  11. And in chapters 4 and 5 are written so that we don't walk into a life of apathy and losing heart.

  12. And see, the stakes are high for us.

  13. As we've just heard, the stakes are high for our world when we just decide to cruise,

  14. just decide to coast, to lose heart in this mission that God's called us to do

  15. and busy ourselves with trivia and irrelevancies.

  16. We get a glimpse of how high the stakes are.

  17. This was from last week in chapter 5 verse 10 with Richard Goscombe.

  18. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,

  19. that each one may receive what is due him for the things done well in the body, whether good or bad.

  20. That is, what that verse is declaring,

  21. is that God will hold everyone accountable for their life.

  22. Every single person will answer for their life.

  23. Notice that the judgment seat of Christ is universal.

  24. We must all appear, everyone, no exceptions.

  25. We will all give an account to the Lord Jesus as the King of kings,

  26. the Lord of all, the ruler of all things,

  27. the one who holds eternity in his hands.

  28. Notice too, that while it is for everyone,

  29. we'll all be judged individually.

  30. Each one must give an account.

  31. Everyone will be held accountable to God for their life.

  32. Now, the point of chapter 5 verse 10 is meant to cause us to shudder.

  33. That's the point of that verse.

  34. It's meant to cause us to shudder.

  35. That is, there is a day of consequences.

  36. There is a day of reckoning.

  37. Eternal consequences.

  38. And no one will escape it.

  39. And so it says in verse 11,

  40. Since then, we know what it is to fear the Lord.

  41. We try to persuade men.

  42. Now, the fear of God,

  43. this final judgment,

  44. is a good motivation.

  45. But it's not the only motivation.

  46. You see, the fear of God

  47. is in no way whatsoever

  48. proof that you actually love Jesus.

  49. Fear of God by itself

  50. moves you into a life of self-confidence,

  51. a life of legalism,

  52. a life of bare minimum apathy.

  53. That's what fear of God does.

  54. In and of itself.

  55. If we do not believe in our hearts

  56. the awful truth

  57. of the enmity there is

  58. between us and God

  59. and all of its eternal,

  60. terrifying consequences,

  61. then our love for Christ

  62. will in fact be shallowed and flawed.

  63. So we need the fear of God,

  64. but that's just not enough in itself.

  65. Without the fear,

  66. love for Christ

  67. will be taken for granted.

  68. It'll be passionless

  69. and entry into all the joys of his presence

  70. is just the next thing that I expect to happen

  71. because of my life of service.

  72. You see, the horror of final judgment

  73. and I don't have time to unpack

  74. exactly what the horror of final judgment

  75. will look like

  76. except that it's meant to result

  77. in shuddering on our behalf.

  78. But the horror of final judgment

  79. makes the wonder and the awe of God's grace

  80. in the Lord Jesus for us

  81. are just beautiful

  82. and humbling

  83. and almost incomprehensible.

  84. Let us believe and feel the horror

  85. of eternal condemnation

  86. and flee from it

  87. into the loving and the gracious arms of Jesus,

  88. the judge of all people,

  89. where you will find no condemnation.

  90. In other words,

  91. as Exodus 20, 20 says,

  92. fear the Lord

  93. so that you don't have to fear the Lord.

  94. We're told in verse 14,

  95. the fear of judgment

  96. is not Paul's only motive.

  97. He says,

  98. for Christ's love compels us.

  99. And then these verses

  100. which follow on from here

  101. are just the wonder

  102. of the love of Christ for us.

  103. Verse 18,

  104. God,

  105. who reconciled us to himself through Christ.

  106. Again,

  107. verse 19,

  108. God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ.

  109. To reconcile

  110. is to render two parties

  111. to be no longer opposed to each other.

  112. It's to win over from hostility

  113. towards friendliness.

  114. It is to make two opposites

  115. consistent and compatible.

  116. And that is what these verses say

  117. that God has done for us in Christ.

  118. Totally opposed.

  119. Enmity and hostility

  120. and brought together.

  121. These verses say

  122. that it's God who took the initiative

  123. to reconcile us to himself,

  124. which is the foundation

  125. of the Christian faith.

  126. It's not about us working for God.

  127. It is all the work of God on our behalf.

  128. See it there.

  129. Verse 18,

  130. all this is from God.

  131. Verse 19,

  132. God was reconciling the world to himself.

  133. Verse 21,

  134. God made him who had no sin

  135. to be sin for us.

  136. The initiative,

  137. the momentum,

  138. and purpose of reconciliation

  139. are all from God.

  140. God does something about it.

  141. God does something about it.

  142. God does something about it.

  143. God does something about the sin

  144. that has caused the enmity,

  145. all of our rebellion against him.

  146. He does something about it.

  147. Verse 19 is the preliminary explanation

  148. of how the reconciliation is brought about.

  149. God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ,

  150. not counting men's sins against them.

  151. That's the preliminary explanation.

  152. In the work of reconciliation,

  153. God doesn't count all of our rebellion against him,

  154. against us.

  155. He doesn't hold us accountable for it.

  156. And verse 21 describes how it's possible

  157. that God doesn't count our sins against us.

  158. God made him who had no sin

  159. to be sin for us.

  160. So that in him,

  161. we might become the righteousness of God.

  162. The end of verse 19 says that

  163. God doesn't want to count our sin against us.

  164. And frankly,

  165. we don't want God to count our sins against us.

  166. The picture here is an account book.

  167. And the account book has written in it

  168. all that we've said,

  169. all that we've done,

  170. all that we've thought,

  171. all that we are.

  172. And verse 21 says that

  173. my sin

  174. is not put to my account.

  175. But that account book

  176. with my name on it

  177. and everything that I have done,

  178. everything that I've thought,

  179. everything that I've done

  180. in rebelling against God

  181. has been put into Jesus' account book.

  182. my name has been scratched off the top

  183. and Jesus has been put there

  184. and I have got Jesus' account book.

  185. my account of sin has been put by God

  186. to the account of his sinless son.

  187. Jesus has taken my place on the cross.

  188. He bore my sin in his body on the cross.

  189. He has been judged in my place.

  190. All the horrors of the crucifixion

  191. is what I, Steve Jeffrey,

  192. deserve for all of eternity

  193. without any relief

  194. including the hope of physical death

  195. from that so that the suffering would end.

  196. No ending for all of eternity

  197. is what I deserve

  198. for my rebellion against God.

  199. And verse 15, sorry, verse 10

  200. says that that's what God will do

  201. to everyone

  202. who rejects him.

  203. He was made sin.

  204. The sin of the world,

  205. that terrible burden,

  206. offense to God,

  207. all the hostility,

  208. the enmity,

  209. and the filth

  210. that separates us from God

  211. and causes us to deserve eternal torment

  212. has been placed by God

  213. unto his son,

  214. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  215. But,

  216. that's only half the story.

  217. Not only that,

  218. but

  219. his perfect,

  220. unblemished righteousness

  221. is put to my account.

  222. I cannot be condemned

  223. because

  224. my record reads

  225. perfect,

  226. unblemished righteousness.

  227. The only thing

  228. that I contribute

  229. to my reconciliation

  230. with God

  231. is the sins

  232. from which I must be redeemed.

  233. All I contribute

  234. is debt,

  235. sin

  236. that I can never repay

  237. and that only needs

  238. to be wiped out.

  239. It's the only hope

  240. is for it to be declared

  241. wiped out.

  242. Now,

  243. this is a trivial

  244. illustration,

  245. but it's kind of like

  246. my wedding day.

  247. As I exchanged

  248. wedding rings

  249. with Nat,

  250. I said to her,

  251. Natalie,

  252. with this ring

  253. I wed you

  254. with all that I am

  255. and all that I have

  256. I honor you.

  257. So,

  258. in that moment

  259. I promised

  260. to

  261. hand over

  262. all that I am

  263. to her.

  264. of course

  265. I had just

  266. finished five years

  267. of ministry training,

  268. had a hex debt,

  269. a car loan

  270. and needed to borrow

  271. $2,000

  272. from my father-in-law

  273. in order to get married

  274. and

  275. he figured

  276. it was a cheap deal

  277. longer term.

  278. And so in that moment

  279. I'm saying to her

  280. there you are

  281. it's all yours.

  282. It's all yours.

  283. And I know

  284. it's trivial

  285. but that's what

  286. happens when you

  287. become a Christian

  288. you bring all

  289. of your sin,

  290. you bring all

  291. of your

  292. moral bankruptcy

  293. and you say

  294. to him

  295. they're yours.

  296. They're all yours.

  297. And in his mercy

  298. he receives them.

  299. Our great God

  300. receives them

  301. and counts them

  302. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  303. And he hands over

  304. all of his perfect

  305. righteousness

  306. to me

  307. and accounts them

  308. to me

  309. forever sealed.

  310. Forever sealed.

  311. It is to fill us

  312. with wonder

  313. and gratitude

  314. and thankfulness

  315. and humility

  316. that the death

  317. of one man

  318. the God-man

  319. Jesus Christ

  320. could bear

  321. the infinite penalty

  322. as a substitute

  323. for everyone

  324. who repents

  325. and trusts

  326. in him.

  327. As a side point

  328. I am

  329. greatly distressed

  330. that in so much

  331. of the church

  332. in the western world

  333. all we want to do

  334. is talk about

  335. the love of God

  336. and to leave out

  337. the crucial

  338. central doctrine

  339. of the penal

  340. substitutionary

  341. atonement

  342. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  343. You cannot

  344. understand

  345. the love of God

  346. for you in Christ

  347. unless you understand

  348. that a debt

  349. had to be paid.

  350. and he

  351. bore it

  352. for us.

  353. It is essential

  354. for our confidence

  355. in this work

  356. of reconciliation

  357. that we see

  358. the centrality

  359. of Jesus

  360. in it.

  361. Notice

  362. verse 18

  363. through Christ

  364. verse 19

  365. in Christ

  366. the reconciliation

  367. of the world

  368. to God

  369. happens through

  370. the death

  371. and the resurrection

  372. of Christ.

  373. It is something

  374. that's happened

  375. in history

  376. it is something

  377. that is finished

  378. and we have

  379. no part

  380. of it

  381. and the word

  382. world

  383. in verse 19

  384. is staggering

  385. staggering

  386. staggering.

  387. It says

  388. that what God

  389. did

  390. through the

  391. death of his

  392. son

  393. the Lord

  394. Jesus Christ

  395. on a hill

  396. outside the city

  397. walls of Jerusalem

  398. around about

  399. AD 33

  400. concerns the

  401. reconciliation

  402. of the entire

  403. universe

  404. with its creator.

  405. Everyone

  406. every culture

  407. every tribe

  408. every people

  409. group

  410. every language

  411. comes under

  412. that statement

  413. the world.

  414. Whatever

  415. background

  416. you come

  417. from

  418. we all

  419. worship

  420. a guy

  421. who was

  422. Jewish

  423. 2000

  424. years ago

  425. who declared

  426. that I am

  427. God

  428. in this

  429. world

  430. reconciling

  431. the world

  432. to its

  433. maker.

  434. It's

  435. the extraordinary

  436. claim of the

  437. New Testament.

  438. It's the claim

  439. verses 14

  440. and 15

  441. we are

  442. convinced

  443. that one

  444. died for

  445. all

  446. and therefore

  447. all died

  448. and he

  449. died for

  450. all.

  451. Jesus'

  452. death

  453. has

  454. universal

  455. significance.

  456. He is

  457. the reconciler.

  458. There is

  459. no reconciliation

  460. with God

  461. outside of

  462. Jesus.

  463. You don't

  464. need anything

  465. more than

  466. Jesus but

  467. you can't

  468. have anything

  469. less than

  470. Jesus.

  471. This message

  472. of reconciliation

  473. with God

  474. through Christ

  475. is our

  476. message for

  477. the nations

  478. and the

  479. stakes could

  480. not be any

  481. higher.

  482. God calls

  483. us clearly

  484. through the

  485. Apostle Paul

  486. right through

  487. 2 Corinthians

  488. you give

  489. yourself to

  490. this matter.

  491. You give

  492. attention to

  493. this matter.

  494. If you

  495. are someone

  496. right now

  497. who's

  498. you're not

  499. sure whether

  500. you're trusting

  501. in the Lord

  502. Jesus can

  503. I say the

  504. fact that

  505. you're here

  506. right now

  507. this morning

  508. the stakes

  509. couldn't be

  510. any higher

  511. for you.

  512. I implore

  513. you on

  514. Christ's

  515. behalf be

  516. reconciled to

  517. God through

  518. Jesus.

  519. So the

  520. message of

  521. reconciliation

  522. is what God

  523. has done and

  524. it can only

  525. do through

  526. Christ.

  527. The ministry

  528. of reconciliation

  529. on the other

  530. hand is what

  531. God can only

  532. do through

  533. us.

  534. So this

  535. bit is for

  536. those who

  537. have received

  538. the message

  539. of reconciliation.

  540. So this

  541. bit is for

  542. all Christians.

  543. This is for

  544. all of us.

  545. Verse 20

  546. We are

  547. therefore

  548. Christ's

  549. ambassadors as

  550. though God

  551. were making

  552. his appeal

  553. through us.

  554. Now the

  555. main thrust

  556. of verse

  557. 20 onwards

  558. is that the

  559. message of

  560. reconciliation

  561. reconciliation is

  562. our ministry

  563. of reconciliation

  564. to the

  565. nations.

  566. This is what

  567. God does

  568. through us.

  569. Verse

  570. 18

  571. All this

  572. is from

  573. God who

  574. reconciled us

  575. to himself

  576. through Christ

  577. and gave us

  578. the ministry

  579. of reconciliation.

  580. The ministry

  581. is given to

  582. us, not to

  583. Christ or the

  584. angels.

  585. Verse 19

  586. And he

  587. committed to

  588. us the

  589. message of

  590. reconciliation.

  591. It's given

  592. to us, not

  593. to Christ or

  594. the angels.

  595. Verse 20

  596. We are

  597. therefore Christ's

  598. ambassadors as

  599. though God

  600. were making

  601. his appeal

  602. through us.

  603. He does it

  604. through us, not

  605. Christ, not

  606. the angels.

  607. Verse 20

  608. Makes our

  609. ministry very

  610. clear.

  611. We are

  612. Christ's

  613. ambassadors.

  614. Now an

  615. ambassador's

  616. role, as we

  617. would know, is a

  618. distinguished one.

  619. We speak, we

  620. behave on

  621. behalf of a

  622. sovereign power.

  623. We represent

  624. that sovereignty

  625. and the

  626. honour of the

  627. sovereignty is

  628. at stake.

  629. That's an

  630. overwhelming

  631. thought.

  632. In his

  633. death, Jesus

  634. represents us

  635. to God and

  636. in his absence,

  637. we represent

  638. him to the

  639. world.

  640. If you

  641. have received

  642. the message of

  643. reconciliation,

  644. reconciliation,

  645. then you

  646. have the

  647. responsibility

  648. and will be

  649. held accountable

  650. for the

  651. ministry of

  652. reconciliation.

  653. See the

  654. connection in

  655. verse 15?

  656. He, that's

  657. talking about

  658. Christ, died

  659. for all,

  660. that those

  661. who live

  662. should no

  663. longer live

  664. for themselves,

  665. but for him

  666. who died for

  667. them and was

  668. raised again.

  669. as a recipient

  670. of the

  671. message of

  672. reconciliation,

  673. my whole

  674. life is now

  675. deployed in

  676. diplomatic

  677. service.

  678. I speak and

  679. live in such

  680. a way that

  681. Jesus looks

  682. like the

  683. magnificent

  684. treasure that

  685. he actually

  686. is.

  687. Corinthians 6

  688. verses 3

  689. to 10

  690. gives us a

  691. glimpse into

  692. the lifestyle

  693. and the

  694. expectations of

  695. an ambassador

  696. of the Lord

  697. Jesus.

  698. It's important

  699. for us to

  700. see this

  701. because this

  702. was confusing

  703. for the

  704. Corinthian

  705. church.

  706. This is not

  707. a special

  708. category of

  709. Christians like

  710. apostles or

  711. missionaries or

  712. ministers.

  713. This is for

  714. everyone.

  715. What Paul

  716. writes in

  717. verses 3 and

  718. 4 is key.

  719. We put no

  720. stumbling block

  721. in anyone's

  722. path so that

  723. our ministry

  724. will not be

  725. discredited.

  726. We represent

  727. the Lord

  728. Jesus.

  729. If the

  730. ministry is

  731. discredited,

  732. the message

  733. is discredited.

  734. Jesus is

  735. discredited.

  736. You see,

  737. when you see

  738. yourself as

  739. an ambassador

  740. of Jesus in

  741. chapter 5

  742. verse 2 and

  743. as God's

  744. co-workers in

  745. chapter 6

  746. verse 1,

  747. I actually

  748. think there's

  749. an inevitable

  750. drivenness about

  751. the service.

  752. I think this

  753. is the thing

  754. that captivates

  755. our life and

  756. drives us with

  757. their real

  758. great deal of

  759. focus and

  760. attention.

  761. I therefore

  762. believe that if

  763. you're casual,

  764. you're laid

  765. back, you're

  766. comfortable, you're

  767. happy to cruise

  768. along, then I

  769. would encourage you

  770. to take another

  771. look at the

  772. diplomatic service.

  773. Too many of us

  774. are just happy to

  775. go to church

  776. once or twice

  777. a month.

  778. Occasional

  779. devotional times,

  780. give money here,

  781. that's not

  782. ambassador or

  783. service.

  784. Can I, first

  785. of all, encourage

  786. you that you

  787. don't go to

  788. church.

  789. You belong to

  790. one.

  791. It is the

  792. priority of your

  793. life.

  794. You belong to

  795. a church.

  796. And when you're

  797. coasting and

  798. cruising, it is

  799. one of the sure

  800. signs that you

  801. have lost

  802. confidence, you're

  803. losing heart.

  804. look at Paul's

  805. lifestyle here.

  806. It is in fact a

  807. lifestyle that

  808. commends the

  809. greatness and the

  810. glory and the

  811. wonder of the

  812. Lord Jesus to

  813. the world.

  814. It's a sacrificial

  815. service is his

  816. lifestyle.

  817. Verse 4 again,

  818. chapter 6,

  819. rather, in other

  820. words, rather than

  821. being a stumbling

  822. block, rather than

  823. discrediting the

  824. ministry of the

  825. Lord Jesus, rather

  826. as servants of

  827. God, we commend

  828. ourselves in every

  829. way.

  830. So how does the

  831. Apostle Paul

  832. commend himself in

  833. his service?

  834. In great

  835. endurance, in

  836. troubles, hardship,

  837. distresses, in

  838. beatings, in

  839. imprisonments and

  840. riots, in hard

  841. work, in sleepless

  842. nights and hunger, in

  843. purity, in

  844. understanding, in

  845. patience and

  846. kindness, in the

  847. Holy Spirit and in

  848. sincere love, in

  849. truthful speech and

  850. in the power of

  851. God with weapons of

  852. righteousness in the

  853. right hand and in

  854. the left.

  855. world.

  856. That's his

  857. diplomatic service.

  858. Instead of being

  859. embittered and

  860. frustrated and angry

  861. and resentful by all

  862. the afflictions and the

  863. hardships and the

  864. calamities and the

  865. labors and the

  866. sleepless night, by

  867. God's grace, Paul has

  868. shown patience and

  869. kindness and love and

  870. he is continually

  871. propelled forward.

  872. His spirit has not

  873. been broken by the

  874. pain of his

  875. ministry.

  876. In the Holy

  877. Spirit he has found

  878. resources to give and

  879. to not grumble and to

  880. keep focusing on his

  881. duty to the Lord

  882. Jesus.

  883. To be patient in

  884. God's timing rather

  885. than to pitying

  886. himself.

  887. To be kind to

  888. people rather than

  889. taking it out on

  890. others.

  891. There are six

  892. paradoxes, if you

  893. like, in verses

  894. 8 to 10 of

  895. chapter 6, I

  896. want to just focus

  897. on one because

  898. for me, this one

  899. sums up all of

  900. them.

  901. Verse 10.

  902. This is the one I

  903. think.

  904. And this, I

  905. believe, is what

  906. our world needs to

  907. see displayed in

  908. Christ's ambassadors.

  909. Verse 10.

  910. Sorrowful, yet

  911. always rejoicing.

  912. What?

  913. Sorrowful, and yet

  914. always, how do you

  915. put those together,

  916. Paul?

  917. What this world

  918. needs from Christ's

  919. fellow workers is an

  920. unshakable joy in

  921. Jesus in the midst of

  922. suffering and sorrow.

  923. Not serving him when I

  924. feel the joy, when the

  925. things are, suffering and

  926. sorrow is over, then I'm

  927. free to serve him.

  928. When the kids are

  929. sore and the

  930. marriage, and I've

  931. got the work is

  932. settled, then I'll

  933. serve him.

  934. That's not what Paul's

  935. saying here.

  936. There are countless

  937. reasons for our hearts

  938. to break in the service

  939. of the Lord Jesus.

  940. But in them all, we do

  941. not cease to rejoice.

  942. One of the great

  943. paradoxes of the

  944. Christian life, and I

  945. believe this is unique to

  946. the Christian faith, it

  947. displays the wonder of

  948. God that we serve, that

  949. we can be sorrowful and

  950. yet always rejoicing.

  951. No other religion

  952. offers you that.

  953. When you have Jesus, you

  954. can lose everything else

  955. with joy.

  956. That's what our world

  957. needs to see from

  958. Christians.

  959. The grace of God is so

  960. infinitely valuable.

  961. people.

  962. Our vision here at

  963. St. Paul's is to

  964. unite our diverse

  965. community in the good

  966. news of the Lord

  967. Jesus, which means

  968. that he is our joy.

  969. And whatever your

  970. cultural background

  971. says is your ultimate

  972. joy, Jesus trumps it

  973. all.

  974. Don't care what it

  975. is, Jesus says, I'm

  976. better.

  977. I am your joy.

  978. And our community

  979. needs to embrace Jesus

  980. as their only hope and

  981. their deepest joy, and

  982. they need to see it in

  983. us.

  984. What do you think it

  985. says to them when we

  986. have a casual, take it

  987. or leave it approach to

  988. Christ's demands over

  989. our lives?

  990. Jesus has given us a

  991. job, and Paul pushes

  992. the point in chapter 6

  993. verses 1 and 2, as

  994. God's co-workers, we

  995. urge you not to receive

  996. God's grace in vain, for

  997. he says, in the time of

  998. my favor I heard you, in

  999. the day of salvation I

1000. helped you, I tell you

1001. now is the time of God's

1002. favor, now is the day of

  1003. salvation.

1004. Now in those couple of

  1005. verses, Paul is making

  1006. both a simple point and a

  1007. slightly more complex

  1008. point.

1009. In verse 2, Paul quotes

  1010. from Isaiah 49 verse 8,

    Isaiah 49:8

1011. which was just read out to

  1012. us, written hundreds of

1013. years earlier, and what does

  1014. he say?

1015. He says, for he says.

1016. Paul is actually using the

1017. tense in that verse, which

1018. means that God is still

  1019. saying.

1020. What he said hundreds of

1021. years earlier, he is still

  1022. saying now.

  1023. He is still speaking.

  1024. That's the really simple

  1025. point he's making there.

1026. This God who spoke then

  1027. continues to speak with

  1028. authority now.

  1029. He is, however, a

  1030. slightly more significant,

  1031. deeper point, complex

  1032. point.

1033. What God has said throughout

  1034. history, he's still saying,

  1035. the slightly more complex

1036. point is that in Isaiah 49,

1037. God is speaking to his

1038. servant who we know now to

1039. be the Lord Jesus Christ.

1040. God is saying that he has

  1041. heard his servant.

  1042. In Isaiah 49, he's heard

  1043. his servant.

1044. He has come to the aid of

1045. his servant and he has

  1046. helped the servant to

  1047. fulfill his mission.

1048. And that's exactly what Jesus

1049. has done throughout his life.

1050. in his death and his

  1051. resurrection and opening the

1052. way for humanity to be

  1053. reconciled with God and

  1054. given them eternal life.

1055. God has equipped him and

1056. helped him for that mission.

1057. The day of salvation was the

1058. day of the servant, the day of

1059. the death of Jesus for the

  1060. reconciliation of humanity to

  1061. their God.

1062. And in quoting that verse to

1063. the Corinthians in the present

1064. tense, Paul is now saying

1065. that the day of salvation is

  1066. continuing in the present

1067. through the servants of the

  1068. servant.

  1069. That's the point he's making.

1070. First with Paul and then

1071. those who embrace the gospel

  1072. through Paul.

1073. God is saying now is the time

  1074. to embrace the gospel.

1075. And it falls on every single one

1076. of us to listen and to

  1077. respond unless we ourselves

1078. receive the grace of God in

  1079. vain.

1080. When God speaks to us as he

1081. does in the present, it is to

1082. take priority over everything in

  1083. our life.

  1084. That's Paul's point here.

1085. It is so easy to slip into this

1086. Corinthian mindset and just put

  1087. God on pause.

1088. I'll respond to you when I get my

  1089. life back together.

1090. I'll respond to you when everything

  1091. suits.

1092. way too much of our modern church

1093. has bought into this view that

  1094. God exists for me.

1095. He exists to meet my needs, to get

1096. me out of trouble when I'm in it

1097. and pretty much stay out of my way

1098. the rest of the time.

1099. Now, very few of us actually

1100. articulate our theology like that,

1101. but it is our operational theology

1102. because it's the way we live our

  1103. lives.

1104. We come to church when it suits.

1105. We get involved when my life is in

  1106. order.

1107. And so we embrace the grace of God

  1108. in vain.

1109. Time with God is often the first

1110. thing to go when the moments of

  1111. pressure are on.

1112. Giving, serving stops in crisis

1113. moments or just busy times.

  1114. Why?

1115. Because our operational theology is

1116. God is there to serve me.

1117. And yet what it says here is the

1118. normal Christian life is a life of

  1119. diplomatic service.

1120. All other pursuits serve that

  1121. pursuit.

1122. Our support of them is diplomatic

1123. service in and of itself.

1124. And so I want to say to those

  1125. gathered here now

  1126. who haven't received Jesus,

1127. I urge you to receive God's grace in

  1128. the Lord Jesus.

1129. Today is the day of salvation.

1130. I urge you to receive God's grace.

1131. He's calling you to receive him.

  1132. To surrender to him.

1133. To stop putting him to one side.

1134. To stop operating as if he's there to

1135. serve you and to fully serve you.

1136. And you may have sat in churches all

  1137. of your life.

1138. I loved hearing the story

1139. I read it this week of a Christian man

1140. who had spent his entire life in church

1141. involved in a global ministry.

  1142. Global ministry.

  1143. And in his 20s

1144. discovered the gospel for the first time.

  1145. Christ died for all

1146. that those who live should no longer

1147. live for themselves but for those

1148. but for him who died for them

  1149. and was raised again.

1150. That is for you who've received this message.

1151. Give yourself to its service.

  1152. The ministry of reconciliation

  1153. is sheer hard work.

  1154. It's not being ambassador

  1155. when it feels right

1156. or when it seems correct

1157. or a positive response is there.

  1158. It's guaranteed

1159. or when it's convenient to do so.

1160. It is to shape your whole life.

1161. I loved hearing the story

1162. of an elderly Christian man

  1163. recently dying of cancer.

  1164. His main concern

1165. was to die so well

  1166. that those around him

  1167. caring for him,

  1168. nurses, doctors, family

  1169. just saw Jesus

1170. and the joy of Jesus.

  1171. He hadn't lost heart

  1172. in the troubles

  1173. and the distresses

  1174. and the hardship.

  1175. He hadn't

  1176. just

  1177. given up.

  1178. So maybe that's you.

  1179. Over time

  1180. there's been a loss of heart.

1181. Just happy to cruise along.

  1182. Happy to kind of

  1183. just spend your time

  1184. talking,

  1185. thinking about theology,

  1186. Christian huddles,

  1187. that kind of stuff

  1188. but not actually

  1189. giving yourself

1190. to the work of God

  1191. in this world.

  1192. Maybe you're

  1193. trading on past stories.

  1194. Someone who got converted

  1195. somehow around you

  1196. 10, 15, 20 years ago.

  1197. Maybe you've lost heart.

1198. As recipients of the message

  1199. of reconciliation

  1200. you've been called

1201. to make this message clear.

  1202. That is your purpose,

  1203. it is your calling,

  1204. it is your ministry.

  1205. Give your life

  1206. to God's global agenda

  1207. by holding out

  1208. this message

1209. from a heart of love

1210. and a life of service.

1211. As we've sung this morning

  1212. and I might add

1213. with a little bit of gusto

  1214. and I hope it's true.

  1215. Christ alone

  1216. is our ceaseless message.

  1217. Grace and peace

  1218. is the overflow

  1219. of our lives.
